Hi Everyone...

on the Cover

Like many of you, I am a little in awe of the amazing job all the emergency services have been doing across the Sunny Coast during our current bushfire season, working together to keep everyone safe. In the Glasshouse Country and Maleny area we are fortunate to have three Queensland Fire and Emergency Services auxiliary fire brigades (red trucks) based at Beerwah, Maleny and Mooloolah as well as our Rural Fire Brigades (yellow trucks) at Glass House, Beerwah, Landsborough, Peachester and Maleny. I reckon I must have seen or heard nearly all of their vehicles on our local roads recently. And as bushfires don’t go to sleep at night, the dedicated crews have no doubt been sharing some pretty crazy hours recently, which is why it is so important that we support their wonderful efforts by making sure we do everything we can to be prepared. Anthony Rook, the first officer at Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade, sent us through a quick email during the week with some vital messages to remind locals about things we should be doing. We have included Anthony’s advice in the story on page 3, so why not take a moment to think about your place and make sure you and your family are prepared if the worst should happen. Regards,

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Local News Stay safe this bushfire season The 2019 bushfire season is now well under way. On November 10 there were 71 bushfires burning across Queensland with more than 350 fire appliances deployed. Anthony Rook, first officer of Glasshouse Mountains Rural Fire Brigade, said this was a timely reminder to all property owners of the harsh reality that during times of peak fire activity across Queensland, QFES resources would be stretched and it might not be possible to have fire appliances at every property. “It is up to all of us to aid fire crews in the protection of ourselves and our properties by ensuring we are adequately prepared for the fire season and potential outbreak of a wild fire,” Anthony said. Acreage and residential property owners alike are recommended to ensure the following: 1. Where applicable, install and maintain fire trails to provide access to all areas of the property (usually a minimum of a 3m wide mowed or bare earth break). 2. Provide clear access to any potential water points on the property - dams, creeks, tanks, swimming pools, etc. 3. All combustible materials - leaf litter, dead grass, shrubs, timber, bark, flammable liquids, etc - are cleared a safe distance from dwellings and buildings. 4. Roofs and gutters are cleaned and clear of leaf litter and other debris. It is highly recommended to consider hazard

reduction burning in the winter months to reduce fuel loads of any wild fire outbreaks. If you have any concerns with the maintenance of surrounding council or state controlled land QFES recommends voicing your concerns directly to your local Anthony Rook council/state member. “As has already been demonstrated this year, wild fires have the potential to significantly impact whole communities, rural and residential alike," Anthony said. “So no matter where you are located, please ensure you and your family have prepared your bushfire safety plan in case of an emergency. “Always remember your local rural fire brigade is willing to offer their advice on how to best prepare to protect yourselves and your property against the threat of bushfires. “Most importantly, please remember if you are asked to evacuate, the best course of action is to follow the advice of authorities and always look out for the safety of your family, friends and neighbours. “Remember property can be replaced, lives cannot,” Anthony said.

James Grimard Candidate for Division 5

James is a Mount Mellum resident who is determined to fight for the fair representation of the hinterland community. “Throughout the past 18 months, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many residents and business owners who have shared with me their concerns regarding local issues,” James said. “It’s becoming extremely apparent that the local community is very disturbed by the lack of employment opportunities that our region provides. “In addition, locals are united in their concerns facing the local farming industry. Our local farmers have been without government support for too long and it’s time to change that,” he said. Born and raised on the Sunshine Coast, James has a passion for public service and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Bond University. Before running for local government, James worked as a consultant in the Brisbane CBD specialising in human resources services within the life sciences field and has worked extensively in business-to-business sales. James most recent governance experience includes his ongoing directorship at the Maple Street (Maleny) Co-Op. If elected, James says he is dedicated to being as accessible as possible to his constituents and has committed to hold open office hours for those who need to discuss regional issues. “I have made it my duty to amplify the needs of our region to state and federal governments,” James said. "Hinterland communities have been dismissed and forgotten for too long and I take seriously my responsibility to be proactive in

ensuring that your voices are heard. “Regionally, I am devoted to becoming a powerful representative for local farmers, family businesses and retirees.” James is an independent and has no political allegiances. “I’m running as an independent candidate so that our farmers, family businesses and local industry can prosper once again,” he said. “Our region should be represented by locals who do not have hidden agendas, large corporate funding or any obligation to interstate organisations. “Politicians need to acknowledge that they represent and work for the local residents of the Sunshine Coast region. In an area like ours it is imperative that we keep party politics out of local government. “As a community we need industrial development if we’re to improve our standard of living and not just continue down struggle street. It’s an issue that concerns all of us and I’m the only candidate who is 110 per cent determined to get it done. “I would be honoured in being your representative for our community and leading Division 5 towards a prosperous future,” James said. www.jamesgrimard.com.au twitter.com/jamesgrimard1 jamesgrimard1@gmail.com

Who are our local candidates? Sunshine Coast Council elections will be held next March but candidates are making their presence felt already to gain some traction with local voters. A recent divisional boundary realignment meant that Division 1 candidate James Grimard now resides in Division 5 and so has changed his nomination accordingly. to be updated, so if you’re unsure check using this document – www.ecq.qld.gov.au/__data/ assets/pdf_file/0027/6696/SCRC_Appendix-AFinal-Maps.pdf – or ring the council on 5475 7272 and ask them to check for you. Candidates already nominated and who have contacted GC&M News are: Division 1 – Rick Baberowski and Jenny Broderick Division 5 – Winston Johnston, Clive WaringFlood, Kiti Bruinsma, James Grimard, Tracie Sanim and Tracy Burton (The Greens). Back to school for council candidates Reforms to the rules for local government councillors and mayors were introduced this year, which will see some significant changes. As part of the Crime and Corruption Commission’s Operation Belcarra, the changes address issues of integrity and accountability in local government. One reform means that all candidates in the March 2020 local government elections, including sitting councillors and mayors who plan to run again, are now required to complete an online training course before they nominate. Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the training was integral to promoting community confidence in the sector. “Queenslanders deserve representation of the highest calibre and mandatory training will mean they have elected officials who have a better understanding of their responsibilities and obligations when serving their communities,

Mr Hinchliffe said. The training includes information such as obligations in relation to reporting donations and expenditure during the campaign as well as the requirement to have a dedicated bank account. It also details responsibilities once elected, such as understanding conflicts of interest, the code of conduct and requirements involved with a councillor’s register of interests. The training can be done online or in a classroom session and takes about an hour to finish. Candidates are then issued with a certificate of completion. If you plan to throw your hat into the ring at the next local government election, you can find more information about the training as well as other information and resources at www.dlgrma.qld.gov.au/candidates. Class dismissed.

To coincide with Halloween, children and grownups recently donned their winged costumes and tested their upside-down hanging skills at the Australasian Bat Night for family fun and to learn about the Sunshine Coast’s nocturnal natives. Before the screening of animated comedy, 'Hotel Transylvania 2', wildlife biologist Clancy Hall spoke about the night’s featured creatures, from insecteating micro bats to fruit-eating flying foxes. Clancy highlighted the importance of the nocturnal flying foxes as our only long-distance pollinators, maintaining the health and diversity in forest ecosystems on the Sunshine Coast. Also during her presentation, she credited her father, Dr Les Hall OAM of Maleny who sadly passed away earlier this year, for her love and curiosity of wildlife. “In honour of my father and in recognition of his commitment to conservation and ability to inspire future generations to become involved in the cause, we are proud to announce the inaugural Les Hall Young Conservationist Award,” Clancy said. “As a true pioneer in bat research and conservation, my father would be proud of the young citizen scientists in our community who are developing their own passion for the environment and their desire to do something to look after it. “We’re excited to share the achievements of those who are following in his footsteps and to recognise youth who are making a difference in their local environments."

Three generations of the Hall family - Clancy, Millie and Rae at the Australasian Bat Night Nominations for the Les Hall Young Conservationist Award are open from November 1 until January 14, 2020 and can be submitted using the online nomination form through the Sunshine Coast council’s website. This award was developed as a partnership between the council and the Hall family, and the winner will be announced in April 2020 at the next Australasian Bat Night event. The inaugural award will be given to an individual or team who have developed novel conservation techniques, engaged and inspired the community and achieved significant on-ground outcomes for wildlife conservation on the Sunshine Coast. Those interested in submitting a nomination to the Les Hall Young Conservationist Award or in learning more can visit council’s website at www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Environment/NativeAnimals/Flying-Foxes/Community-News-and-Events.

Maree Anderson

Following our front page story in the last edition, we thought it would be lovely to find out more about one of our cover stars - tireless local community volunteer Maree Anderson. Q: Have you always volunteered your time or focussed more on volunteering since you’ve retired? A: I worked full time until I retired so there was little time to be involved with community groups. My work involved working with community groups from a government position so it was a natural progression to focus on volunteering when I retired, especially as we had moved to Beerwah and volunteering was a way to learn about the community and meet new friends. Q: What groups are you involved with locally now? I am involved in a few groups that are all rewarding in many ways. I am secretary of Celebrate Glasshouse Country Inc, the group that hosts the Glasshouse Country Street Party. The committee members volunteer many hours towards planning the street party, which showcases the lifestyle we all enjoy. I first became involved when I was asked to write a funding application for the 2015 Street Party. Boomerang Bags is a group that meets fortnightly to sew bags from preloved and donated materials. We love creating these Glasshouse Country Boomerang Bags that find their way to homes far and wide. A recent donation of sheer material led us to make vegetable bags, which are turning out to be as popular as the shopping bags. I also joined the library when we first moved here and

soon found it to be the hub of the community. As a Friend of Beerwah Library, I participate in home library where I visit people in their homes, have a chat and change their library books. We have a book sale where I help out on occasions and sometimes hold craft activities. I am a member of the Mountain Quilters Club and am secretary this year. These quilters create the most beautiful work and easily share their knowledge to help others. Q: What made you decide to join Neighbourhood Watch (NHW)? Upon moving to Beerwah, a neighbour came to our door carrying a big bag of oranges. He was with NHW and made us feel very welcome in the neighbourhood. His welcome encouraged me to attend a meeting and I have been secretary ever since (around eight years). I had an idea along the way that new residents would feel welcome if they also received a small gift when moving here so I set about planning a welcome kit. Five years on, the welcome kit has evolved to be more of a community project, distributing around 300 a year to new residents through the Beerwah Library, most newsagents and some post offices and real estate agents across Glasshouse Country. Q: Why do you think NHW is important? NHW is about supporting our community, looking out for each other to live in a safe and secure neighbourhood. I see NHW as an ideal way to deliver safety messages to the community, having an awareness of home safety, personal safety and safety while online.

Q: What do you love best about volunteering? The best part about volunteering is the friendships we make along the way, being with likeminded people who enjoy living in this beautiful community. I also enjoy using the skills I learnt during my working life, making a difference without taking on too much responsibility. The giving back notion is quite rewarding. Q: As well as quilting, tell us more about your other hobbies (in between your volunteering work)? A: Yes, I do enjoy sewing and, of course quilting, and other stitching. I thought I would have so much time for sewing when I retired but it hasn’t worked out that way … well, not yet! I enjoy gardening too, always looking for plants that love living here as much as I do.

Beerwah Homemaker Centre development application Plans for a new Coles shopping centre, McDonald’s, petrol station, retail showroom, hardware/nursery, gym, bulky goods homemaker centre and a zone for service/light industry development on the 16.5 hectare site on the southern corner of Roys Road and Steve Irwin Way, Beerwah have created a lot of conversation. In the development application to Sunshine Coast Council, Coles Group Property Developments Ltd assert that Beerwah needs this development, stating that the new developments will have “limited impacts upon commercial competitors”. Although the developments are not a 100% fit with the planning scheme, they conclude that the council should approve it, stating “any impacts of the proposal are generally positive and the proposal will be of benefit to Beerwah and the wider hinterland community”. We asked some local businesses, business leaders and community representatives what they thought.

Beerwah Village/Marketplace A spokesperson for Village Fair Investments Pty Ltd (owner of Beerwah Village and Beerwah Marketplace) was expectedly cautious. “We are currently reviewing the three planning applications sitting over this large parcel of land,” the spokesperson said. “At this stage we understand the supermarket sits outside the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme designated zoning area for this type of development.”

8

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce Chamber president Ursula Starkovsky represents the interests of the broad business community. “As president of the chamber I would like to voice my concerns over the proposed development on Roys Road,” Ursula said. “I applaud developments that benefit our region but they need to be done with consideration for the existing local business community. “There are already too many empty shops in town. We want people to enter and explore our townships and not stop on the periphery or drive past. “I am concerned that our local businesses, already under a lot of pressure from Caloundra South (Aura) and/or the general economic downturn, will have to deal with another large competitor. “Yes, the area is growing and yes, competition is healthy but to what extent? “What about the small business community – what about the baker, the butcher, the stationery shop, the gift shop, the food outlets. They are the ones to really feel another very dominant ‘new kid on the block’. “The chamber will play a role in hearing the voices of our business owners and coordinating a community response,” Ursula said.

State Member for Caloundra State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said more local jobs would be a critical outcome. “The proposal has strong benefits for the community but I would like to know more details about the proposed development,” Mr McArdle said. “Beerwah residents will benefit from a wider choice of services, including the mix of businesses, and this potentially ensures residents are not required to travel further afield for them. “Yet there are a few points that need to be addressed. There are known traffic congestion issues at the intersection adjacent to the site and any development will add significantly to the number of vehicles in the area. How will this traffic question be resolved and what are the number of car parks to be constructed as part of the development?” Mr McArdle said.

Division 1 Councillor Cr Rick Baberowski wants people to understand a little more about what happens now that the applications have been made to the council. “First, let me clarify that it’s actually three concurrent applications, two of which are impact assessable and one that is code assessable,” he said. “The most significant application is for a variation request, which seeks to override the planning scheme and vary the zone from medium density industrial to specialised centre zone. Because it’s seeking to override the planning scheme, it’s a rigorous impact assessable process requiring detailed information exchanges, referrals to the state government, a 30-day notification process calling for public submissions and will automatically come before council for a decision. This is likely to take around 6-12 months," Cr Baberowski said. “The next application is for a service station and food/drink outlet, which is also impact assessable with a 15-day public submission process. This also requires a rigorous assessment process typically taking several months.” The last is a code assessable application to reconfigure one lot into four lots. “It will be assessed against the current medium density industrial zoning and this usually takes a few months," Cr Baberowski said. “Council officers and I will, of course, be closely scrutinising the proposal impacts on traffic, its proposed parking and its claimed economic impact, both on existing centres and on jobs, among other issues,” he said. “Whether you are for or against this proposal, or you think there should be particular conditions of approval, or you want to make sure a specific issue is strongly considered, I encourage you to make a formal submission in the submission period,” Cr Baberowski said.

Business leaders and elected representatives respond Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Cooperative/Shell petrol station Steve Williams, general manager of Coochin Creek Co-op, believes there is a lot to take in with the scope of the project. “Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Cooperative believes that progress is essential in any healthy vibrant community. However, it should not be at the cost and detriment of the environment and country community atmosphere that we have enjoyed,” Steve said. “We, like many other small local businesses, are acutely aware of the importance of our role in not only providing the services and products that locals and visitors require but also the value we add to the social fabric of the community through personal involvement, employment, events and charity," he said. “The Co-op warns that the inherent risk of corporate retail giants with deep pockets

cannibalising small local businesses to the point of extinction is not going to be beneficial to the local community over the longer term and, as such, questions the financial modelling that says such a development will grow the local economy immediately from day one without any financial impact on other local businesses or jobs. “It is our belief that promises of new jobs being created could possibly be offset somewhat by many other existing local jobs lost. The Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Cooperative prides itself on employing 30 mostly permanent full-time locals,” Steve said. Tell us what you think by emailing editorial@gcnews.com.au or comment on our pinned Facebook post. Next week, GC&M News will report what local people in the community have to say.

Local celebrations for Zonta’s centenary

*

Zonta International turned 100 on November 8 and the Zonta Club of Blackall Range celebrated in style with a dinner at Tranquil Park, attended by Member for Glass House Andrew Powell and Cr Jenny McKay from Sunshine Coast Council. Apart from club members, former members of the club came from as far away as Sydney and local service clubs Quota, Rotary and Lions sent representatives. Club president Judith Ross-Smith thanked the organisers, headed by Ann Koenig and past district governor Ans van Erp, who came from Toowoomba for the occasion. Judith told guests that in 1919, New York journalist and playwright Marian de Forest had a dream. “She dreamt of bringing together women executives from around the world – an army of experts who, through friendship, understanding, cooperation and goodwill, would become a force for irresistible peace," she said. “This was in the aftermath of World War I. She obviously did not succeed in all of this aim, but she and five friends started the club they called Zonta, combining five Sioux Indian words meaning, among other things, ‘honest and trustworthy’ and ‘shelter and support’, in order to encourage the education of girls. “She realised the only way to achieve gender equality and the advancement of the status of women was education, and the club was, and still is, dedicated to this,” Judith said. Zonta International, now with almost 30,000 members in 63 countries throughout the world, has achieved consultative status with the United Nations on women’s welfare, especially in developing countries, one of only 146 non-government organisations to have that privilege. Ans van Erp, in proposing the toast for Zonta International and quoting from a letter from Zonta International president Susanne von Bassewitz sent to all clubs in the world on the centenary, nevertheless spoke a word of warning. “Our founding mothers would probably look at our achievements and say – well done! But they might also be a little impatient. They might well ask why, after 100 years, has gender equality been so hard to achieve. They may well wonder how many more years it will take.” A highlight of the dinner was a cavalcade devised by club PR/advocacy chair Renate Ogilvie. Ten Zontians dressed in period clothes came on to the floor dancing to the music of each decade – from the Charleston of the 1920s to rock. They represented each decade since the inauguration of the organisation and told the history of Zonta in each of those ten-year periods, on the world stage, in Australia and on the Blackall Range. As one guest said as she left: “I had no idea what an amazing organisation you are and how much you have done for women in the past 100 years.”

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Vale Ian Bryce

18 May 1938 – 28 October 2019 A funeral service was held for Maleny local Ian Stuart Charles Bryce at the Maleny Uniting Church on Friday, November 1. Heartfelt tributes were shared at the service by each of Ian and Diana’s, his wife of more than 50 years, three children – Stuart, Fiona and Cameron - as well as by Helen Gilmour Walsh who spoke on behalf of the RSL and in particularly the Maleny RSL Sub Branch. Ian was born in Atherton and was raised on the Atherton Tablelands until his family moved to Eumundi in 1943 and he attended school in Brisbane. However, he had strong family roots in the Maleny community. Ian’s father. Alexander Stuart Charles Bryce (Stuart), was born in Maleny and Ian's grandfather Charles Bryce built Priscilla Cottage, which is now located at the Maleny Pioneer Village. Many Glasshouse Country and Maleny locals would recognise Ian’s name from his time as Caloundra City Council’s deputy mayor during the 1990s. Fiona said her father had always been interested in politics. He was elected as the local councillor in 1994 and served two terms in the role. One of his proudest achievements during his time on council was the construction of what would have to be one of the busiest buildings in town - the Maleny Library, which over the years has serviced the community so well. He was also pleased that the council was able to purchase the old Witta School, which allowed for the local history to be retained as well as being able to create a wonderful community facility in Witta.

This is now a thriving location for the Witta Markets every month and is used by the Maleny Garden Club and hired out regularly for parties and weddings. “In council meetings, he kept the other councillors very honest and is remembered fondly by council employees, many of whom considered him a friend and attended his service,” Fiona said. While in more recent times Ian was well known for his service and support in the local community, in his previous work he was devoted to serving the nation, working for the Australian Securities and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and serving for more than a decade in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve. He joined ASIO in 1962 and retired in 1987, a total of 25 years starting as a clerk and ending up as the state director of ASIO Queensland. The level of secrecy required in the job did not allow him to divulge any details of his daily life, which must have been tough for such a wonderful story teller. His son Stuart said that whenever the kids asked what he did, he referred to his work as for the “Attorney-General’s Department”. “The job did allow Dad the opportunity to exercise his tremendous intellect in analysis, as well as his wonderful interpersonal skills and he rose quickly through the ranks," Stuart said.

“As a consequence Mum and us kids had a tour of eastern Australia as we grew up – Melbourne, Sydney, Port Moresby, Melbourne again, then finally Brisbane. “Although we went to lots of different schools and lived in plenty of houses, the experiences we had as a consequence of these postings live with us still as some of the happiest memories of our lives. “Although it suited him, and he continued to excel in his duties, he’d had enough by 1987 and saw no future in moving to Canberra. “I guess it was that Queensland thing. You know, you can take the boy out of Queensland, but you can’t take Queensland out of the boy! “He worked for the next four years in a variety of positions in a private equity company but by 1991 he was ready to return completely to his roots and he and mum bought a block in Witta, built a house and the rest is, as they say, history,” Stuart said. Fiona reckons that in Witta her Dad really enjoyed fitting into the Maleny community, embracing retirement with an active social life with many new and old friends and enjoying doing work around the Pioneer Village. Ian was a very special person, both to the community and his family, and will be fondly remembered as being an integral part of the heritage of the Maleny district.

Environment Life with coffee

By Lea Parkes Many of us love to grab a takeaway coffee to kickstart our day, or maybe get us through the day. However, members of the War on Waste Glasshouse Country are concerned that many locals may not be aware just how bad takeaway cups are on our environment. War on Waste member Joanne Rae explained that the problem is with the nasty plastic lining hiding in takeaway cups and that Sunshine Coast Council’s current waste management services are unable to recycle single-use coffee cups. “The current streams of kerbside and public waste management cannot effectively separate the plastic from the paper, so billions of coffee cups get sent to landfill,” she said. Joanne wants to make sure that GC&M News readers are aware of the program called Responsible Cafés that was founded in 2013 as an initiative to help reduce plastic waste from our oceans and neighbourhoods. The program's success has grown due to the commitment of like-minded cafés and consumers, and there are now 4,500 cafés on board. A responsible café actively seeks to reduce the consumption of single-use coffee cups by providing

War on Waste

incentives for customers to use a reusable cup or keep cup, and in some cases a pat on the back for those who bring their own! We already have a number of cafés in Glasshouse Country and Maleny that have signed up to the movement along with thousands of other cafés fighting the war on waste. The local cafés involved in Beerwah are Banjo's Bakery and the Australia Zoo cafés, in Landsborough are the 3 Divas and Henry & Co, and Brouhaha at Ewen Maddock Dam, and in Maleny are The Orangery Maleny and Rosetta Books, that has expanded the options by providing cups that can be taken away and then returned. Joanne from War on Waste is calling on locals to encourage their favourite café to get on board if they aren’t already part of the program. “Next time you are waiting for your brew, start a conversation and have a chat with them about the concept. Many may not know about the enormity of the problem or they may not know of a way to improve the situation," Joanne said. “Introduce them to Responsible Cafes. It's super simple for your café to sign up and it literally takes two minutes online, and to download a poster and they are on board!

Jo Rae taking a break with daughter Chloe “Not only is it going to reduce plastic consumption, it is extra publicity for the café through social media and being part of a network that potential new customers or travellers can search for in our local area,” Joanne said. And one last thing - don’t forget to take your clean keep cup when you leave the house each day so you can play your part in looking after our local environment.

If you would like to join our group come along to the next meeting on Wednesday, November 20 from 6–7.30pm at the CWA Hall in Simpson Street, Beerwah. Phone 0427 873 701 or Facebook War on Waste Glasshouse Glasshouse Country Country for more information.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Beauties of our waters Australia may be the driest continent on the planet apart from Antarctica but its freshwater rivers, creeks, swamps and lakes provide habitat for a huge variety of waterbirds. Throughout Queensland, there are more than 50 species of waterbird, including more than 20 species of waterfowl (such as ducks, geese, teals and shovelers), and 11 herons and egrets. Waterbirds, unsurprisingly, depend on waterways and waterbodies for food supplies, roosting, mating and breeding habitats. Waterbirds also play a unique and often central role in many aquatic ecosystems. Large concentrations of breeding waterbirds create what is sometimes the only significant input of nutrients for that environment, providing positive effects on productivity and biodiversity, including numbers and species of aquatic invertebrates and fish. Waterbirds are major predators of aquatic insect larvae so regulate species that are pests to humans, such as mosquitos, or to human crops. Some species feed on wetland plants or on other invertebrates. Waterbirds are also important vectors of dispersal of plants and animals at local, regional and even continental scales. They carry propagules on their feet or feathers, and also transport parasites and are part of commensalism. We are lucky to have numerous creeks and rivers, wetlands and dams in our region. These support many waterbird species, including ducks, grebes, waterhens, cormorants, darters, herons and egrets. Our waterways need our care and protection but they are being impacted more and more by urban development, herbicides and pesticides, industry and human waste, and introduced aquatic weeds. Contributed by Brian Robertson The Maleny Garden Club committee and six of the current life members celebrated at a luncheon recently recalling the Autumn Floral Carpet and Spring Fairs that were a feature of the club for 52 years prior to the Gardening on the Edge event now held. There were memories tempered with laughter and fondness for those not able to be present. A common theme was the benefit of companionship and the getting of gardening knowledge at the meetings in each other’s gardens. Several photograph albums provoked a determination to put together a record that others could enjoy. Presidents’ reports from 1952 to 2019 provided an insight into how the club has evolved. In no time at all the entire luncheon was over, a time that was enjoyed by everyone.

ADF memorial for Beerburrum

Twin Cedars Retirement Community in Beerburrum will build a memorial to the fallen and returned service men and women of the Australian Defence Force following a grant from the Australian Government under the Saluting Their Service Commemorations program. The memorial will form a focal point for annual remembrance ceremonies to be held at the community on ANZAC Day and Armistice Day. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said this project was a great example of how much could be achieved by a local community with only a modest helping hand from government. “With a grant of just $3,560, the Twin Cedars Home Owners Committee are going to create a moving new memorial here on the Sunshine Coast and help promote an ongoing appreciation of the role that service personnel have played in shaping Australia as we know it today,” Mr Wallace said. The memorial will include a semi-circle of sandstone featuring wooden plaques representing the Army, Navy and Air Force. It will be accompanied by a flag pole flying the Australian National Flag daily. “It is through volunteer projects like this that the memory of our dedicated and courageous ADF personnel will live on in our local communities and I am delighted that the government has been able to support this initiative from some passionate Beerburrum locals,” he said. Twin Cedars is an over 50s residential park with about 120 residents, currently including six former members of the ADF. Twin Cedars Home Owners Committee chairperson John Pozzey said that Twin Cedars’ residents easily identified with sacrifice and military service, with many vividly remembering the 20th century’s major conflicts. “Many people who live here are keen gardeners and they are looking forward to taking on responsibility for the establishment and care of the flowers that are going to bring life and colour to this new memorial,” My Pozzey said. The Home Owners Committee intend to complete the memorial in time for ANZAC Day 2020. Andrew Wallace with John Pozzey and the Australian National Flag, which will fly at the new memorial

You Said It Huge thanks to the firies

Not many people in Maleny would have realised that there was a significant fire threat to our region recently on the ridge between River Road and Scotts Road below Maleny-Stanley River Road, Booroobin. This area came under dramatic fire attack and had it not been for the amazing work by the fire fighters and the helicopter pilots it would not now be under control. Given the large population that now live along the ridge of Stanley River Road, the outcome could have been much worse had it not been stopped at the base of the escarpment. Hopefully no property was lost in the main area of concern but given the ferocity of the fire there had to have been some damage. The wildlife would not have fared well at all, and this is prime koala habitat. So could residents keep an eye open as this is the critical time for fauna to be noticed who may need help. Thank you just doesn’t say enough for the firies amazing efforts for 48 hours and which still continues. Jeanette Nobes Maleny

Climate change denial

It's amazing the lengths the National Party in Queensland will go to deny the impact and evidence of climate change. On ABC RN on Sunday, November 10 our Minister for "Coal", Matt Canavan, claimed that India was one of the largest global CO2 emitters. Nothing could be further from the truth. For his information and the benefit of your readers, India's CO2 emissions in 2017 was 2.5 gigatonnes per person compared with 5.3 for the US and 9.8 for China. Australia's per capita emissions were far higher. I would also like to ask Senator Canavan why he is so keen to export more to India? I believe he is an avid supporter of the Adani coal mine. When are the Nationals going to accept the science behind climate change? They have a lot to answer for to the poor people of regional NSW and Queensland who are losing their houses and livelihoods as a consequence of climate change. Roy Clogstoun Maleny

Re: Transport levy

In the letter from Rod Houston (GC&M News November 13) he talks about Sunshine Coast Council’s transport levy, which has been a festering sore with many ratepayers in the Beerwah and Glass House Mountains area for a number of years. The major banks and financial institutions were recently hauled over the coals at the Banking Royal Commission for charging fees for no service. The Sunshine Coast Council is indulging in exactly the same type of dodgy behaviour but appears to be able to operate outside the laws that apply to other institutions. Don't expect a reasonable answer to the problem from our local member any time soon. Your only recourse is the ballot box. Use your vote wisely. Frank Moroney Glass House Mountains 18

CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

Re: Our roads are dangerous

Given the ongoing discussion on this topic, it is plain that many people in the area feel strongly about it. I have had correspondence with Cr Rick Baberowski and Andrew Powell MP, both of whom were supportive in their comments. I believe that an opportunity exists to have a pedestrian and cycle path incorporated into the B2N Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade project and I have created a petition on change.org calling for this to Mark Bailey, the Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads. I would urge all readers in favour of this idea to add their weight and sign the petition. The link is http://chng.it/2R8b8jfG. Hans Dauncey Glass House Mountains

Horse racing industry

I have no interest in the racing industry - never have - but am ashamed that I did not realise that the slaughter of horses that have passed their financial use by date is and has been part of the scene for quite some time. The fact that administrators in the industry have the gall to state publicly that they were unaware of this practice or that they have not been advised of this occurring are either very dumb, incompetent, or unaware of what is going on around them. Instead they adopt the attitude that "if we had known we would have immediately investigated any such report". I have spoken to a lot of people who like to have a bet and they say they have known about this activity occurring for a long time. Three of the best known supporters of the industry, Gai Waterhouse, Gerry Harvey and John Singleton, have been most notable by remaining completely silent on this matter to my knowledge. Maybe they were also unaware of this dark side hiding behind the glamour, fashion parades, champers and, of course, money. It appears to me that the basic problem is that of over breeding in the hope that a couple of horses, out of say a couple of hundred, will be financial successes for the owners and trainers, etc. While I do not know and am not qualified to suggest a particular solution/s, somebody must come up with something that is publicly acceptable. Possibly a good start would be for the hierarchy of the industry to honestly admit that there is a problem and that slaughtering (bolting) is actually occurring at this time. My immediate reaction when I first saw this on TV was "what a bunch of bloody hypocrites". It's still my response, even after a few weeks from my first viewing! J Weeks Beerwah

Re: Let's have a positive response

I agree with Scott Wilson’s comments in last week’s GC&M News regarding the need for a positive response from Cr Rick Baberowski. Yes, we deserve better. These days elections seem to be won by people who have the most recognisable name by voters, and we know that as the council elections are approaching, we will see more and more of Cr Rick over the ensuing months. However, I would like to see a list of actual positives he has produced for us voters on the eastern side of the highway, not just the ribbon snipping and appearances he has made at clubs and community events over the past 3.5 years.

SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519

In particular I would like to know what action has he taken about the transport levy, which recently doubled to $45. This is for the transport we do not get from council. This is a contentious issue that just seems to remain ignored. It came up more than once at and since the last election but still it seems to remain unaddressed by the councillor. It’s time for our division to have a new representative, someone who represents us all, not just the easy ones, someone who does not ignore you when the going gets tough. So please consider voting for a new face. Peter Robinson Glass House Mountains

Re: Climate catastrophe

Reading Sel Hopely’s reply (GC&M News, November 13) to David Lowry (GC&M News, October 30) confused me. To quote Sel* “…solar activity, not CO2, is the primary driver of the earth’s temperature and the sun’s radiance is now the weakest since the little ice age”. Why has the earth warmed by 0.8 deg C since the 1880s? I don’t see how you can make an argument that the earth has not warmed given the weight of scientific evidence showing that it has. (I don’t feel the need to supply reams of references and it wouldn’t change a single mind anyway). But I’m writing to reassure you Sel that you have nothing to worry about. Nobody is going to do anything to stop business as usual. Conservative governments of the right are mostly non-believers in human-induced climate change, the left and green groups are ideologically opposed to any form of modern nuclear energy that could provide a "base load" until we move in a constructive direction and the rest of us seem to only want a job! We’re probably the quiet Australians who run the place! Meanwhile, the polar bears in northern Alaska have to learn to make do with swimming to try to find a feed of seal (because their ice shelf has melted) and Venice will slowly sink into The Azure. (Those crazy Italians, what were they thinking?) And the rest of us will continue to write indignant letters to the editor of our favourite publication or safely comment on social media outlining our point of view. Oh, and Premier Palaszczuk, better buy a couple of big water bombing planes. We’re probably going to need them. *Climate change deniers are wearing me down, sarcasm is all I have left to debate them. Be responsible dog owners

To our disgust when we used the Landsborough dog park recently with our new pup we had to bring him home again as there was so much dog droppings left behind by others. Bags are provided for picking up your dog’s poop - please use them and don’t spoil it for others. It is just lazy and disrespectful to not worry or think about how your dog or others could catch germs. Please don’t take your dog there if you are going to allow your dog to poo and you as their keeper are not prepared to pick it up. Business News Local finalist in business awards

Shop local this Christmas

By Sonia Clark

Beerwah-based family business Valentine Transport was thrilled to be a finalist in the building and construction category at this year’s Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance Business Awards held at Twin Waters. While they missed out on the top gong in their category, owner-operators of the tipper and truck hire business Sehana Naz (Naz) and Craig Valentine were honoured to have made it as a finalist from 210 entries. They were also proud to be part of the awards, which celebrated 25 years of recognising exceptional businesses, large and small, from around the Sunshine Coast region. Craig said he felt the award recognition was more of a reflection of the generations of hard work and dedication of his family over the years and he was pleased that their small local business was recognised as amongst the best in the industry. “Most small businesses fail within the first three years. To instead be recognised as amongst the best in the industry in that time is unbelievable," Craig said. "We are extremely grateful for all the genuine and good-hearted people who have helped us get to where we are and, most of all, we are so very thankful to our dad, George Valentine, who has taught us everything we know.” Naz said it was exciting to win the award as it

Sehana Naz (Naz) and Craig Valentine at the 2019 Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance Business Awards was the first time they had been nominated for an industry award. “We had a lovely night off from the kids and it was great to get dressed up – especially to see Craig all dressed up in his suit instead of his usual high-vis gear,” Naz laughed. Valentine Transport tippers and trucks can be seen on road works and civil sites up and down the Sunshine Coast.

In the lead up to Christmas, Maleny Commerce is giving you a chance to win a $500 Visa debit card or a $200 IGA hamper as part of its latest live, love, shop Maleny campaign that has been under way since November 1. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton loves all the memes around shopping local on social media. "While some are hilariously funny they also remind us about the importance of keeping it local," Nicole said. “There is one doing the rounds at the moment that I particularly like - Shop local cause Amazon won’t support your kid’s ball team. “This is so true. How many of us have kids in clubs that fundraise and rely on small businesses in Maleny to support their fundraising efforts. “If we stopped shopping at our small businesses then there would be no one to support local clubs. “It’s a circle. We need to support local businesses so they can support our community," Nicole said. November is also Shop Small month, an annual celebration of small businesses across Australia. The live, love, shop Maleny promotion will run until December 9 and random winners will be drawn on Friday, December 13 at the Maleny Christmas Festival, which is also run by Maleny Commerce. Look out for posters with the live, love, shop Maleny logo on them for participating businesses.

Men in Business Juan Perez Maleny Smash Repairs

Juan Perez is the new owner of Maleny Smash Repairs in Lawyer Street, Maleny. Juan had been helping the previous owner when the opportunity to take over the store came up in September this year - and he jumped at it. After completing his spray painting apprenticeship straight out of school, Juan spent a few years travelling around Australia on his bike and ended up working as an assessor for a large insurance company in Brisbane, where he met his wife, Katchia. After holidaying in Maleny, they fell in love with the people and the town. When Katchia was offered a position at the River School in Maleny they jumped at the chance to move their young family here. Juan loves being able to give back to the local community by coaching his son’s soccer team and refereeing local touch football matches (he was a rugby league referee for 20 years) as well as helping out locals with fast turnaround repairs. With his 30 years of experience in the industry, Juan wants locals to know that they do not need to leave the hinterland for repairs. Juan is happy to help with all stages of the insurance process to make sure you can get everything done sooner, backed with his lifetime warranty. “Our main goal is happy customers,” Juan said. “We even give your car a quick detail when ready.”

Barry Davey - D&F Auto Care

You would be hard pressed to find someone as enthusiastic and passionate about cars as Landsborough local and owner of D&F Auto Care, Barry Davey. Since buying the business almost ten years ago, Barry and wife Lee-ann have grown D&F Auto Care from a one-man-band in a single shed, to a business that employs two full-time mechanics and apprentice, spread over three large sheds. Barry is an experienced mechanic and has been in the trade for more than 35 years. At D&F Auto Care they pride themselves on offering friendly, local service solutions for customers, with no job too big or too small, Barry said. Basically, if it’s mechanical, they can fix it! Barry can’t remember a time when he didn’t love cars. He shared his passion with his brothers growing up in Tasmania and since moving to sunny Queensland 20 years ago, it’s as strong as ever. While he enjoys working on anything with an engine, he has a soft spot for older cars and has built a solid reputation for servicing classics. When he’s not working in the sheds or office at D&F Auto Care, you can be sure Barry isn’t too far from an engine. In his spare time, Barry can be found under the hood or behind the wheel of one of his own race cars.

Trivia fundraiser a success The Mooloolah community came together recently to raise funds for drought relief at a trivia night at the Mooloolah Public Hall. The hall was packed to the rafters and an amazing $4,500 was raised on the night thanks to the generosity of the Mooloolah Valley community. The Mooloolah Lions would like to thank

everyone who came along to enjoy the night and/or those who generously donated money and prizes. All monies raised will go to the Lions Club of Oakey who are working hard to assist those affected by drought in their area. Every dollar will be spent on helping families, farmers and businesses who supply the goods.

IN DIVISION 5

SPRING/SUMMER 2019

From your councillor This is my last newsletter as I hang up my hat after 20 years in local government. I do so with a big thank you to the community, family and friends.

I am often asked about the differences between my early days in local government compared with today. While the number of residents I represent has increased four-fold the unchanging, big positives are the wonderful volunteers who generously serve year in, year out to ensure our villages thrive. I have been able to work with them to deliver some great outcomes. Over 20 years I have championed and overseen the development of the Maroochy Botanic Gardens Ecology Centre and the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Discovery Centre. Both facilities have been awarded some of Australia’s highest distinctions, both were only possible because of the partnership council enjoyed with the community and both will continue to be significant in decades to come. These are just two of the small and large cultural, sporting and environmental achievements made over my tenure. There is however just one lingering challenge not realised… sealing more rural roads. While hinterland councillors have achieved successes by way of the Rural Roads Policy, and have been instrumental in trialling innovative alternative sealing products – I’ve wanted to do more. Council has been on a sustainability journey during my time as Environment Portfolio councillor, developing its Climate Change and Peak Oil Strategy. This is the foundation for many climate change and sustainability

initiatives including the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm which now offsets council’s entire electricity consumption. Our Economic Development Policy encourages and brings clean technologies to the region and we are working with all levels of government to improve mass transport. In 2017, and again in 2018, the Sunshine Coast Airport achieved Level 3+ for carbon neutrality and we are working towards international recognition as an accredited UNESCO Biosphere. We have incorporated ecotourism opportunities through the Dark Skies initiative and partnered with other governments to develop an Australian-first investigation into the potential of blue carbon to reduce carbon emissions while creating new economic, social, cultural and ecological opportunities. Community partnerships have helped reduce waste and increase upcycling through the Smart Living Strategy and given the Coast the largest number of Land for Wildlife properties in Australia. Council land acquisitions continue to grow our conservation estate, and we are adapting to climate change through the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy. I have worked hard and strenuously to showcase the Sunshine Coast to our international tourists through agricultural products, ecotourism and cultural exchanges and I applaud the work of our local artists and educators who have built strong relationships with our Sister Cities. Twenty years of dedication to local government has meant many long days and hard work, but it has also been personally very rewarding.

Note from the Mayor This year we have achieved some major milestones with our region shaping projects, but I’m especially proud of the work that council has been able to do with a wide cross section of community representatives to develop our proposed new Community Strategy. Our region has a history that intrinsically connects with its natural landscape and waterways and the way in which our communities have developed over time reflects these connections. Our proposed new Community Strategy 2019-2041 is a product of the engagement we have had with members of our community and seeks to reflect their aspirations for our Sunshine Coast – both today and in 20 years’ time. The collective vision of Together we Thrive is a strong common thread across all of the feedback and messages we have received in developing Division5@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au 07 5441 8043

this strategy. The proposed strategy will be considered by council before the end of the year. What makes our community special is our ability to support and reach out, not just to our friends and family, but to our neighbours, acquaintances and community groups. We open our homes to others in times of natural disasters, we turn out in great numbers to show our commitment and we make time to share with those most in need. Working together makes for a stronger community and that is what the proposed strategy seeks to achieve. It is very much a part of realising our goal to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and safe New Year. Take the time to spend with loved ones and make the most of this special time of the year. Mark Jamieson

As your councillor, I am responsible for three portfolios – Community Services, the Environment and International Relationships. These portfolios cover a large part of daily life here on the Sunshine Coast. They include diverse topics from animal management to multicultural and reconciliation plans, rural futures and ecotourism opportunities. In youth engagement and meeting the needs for cultural connectability, recognising the need for arts and sports and balancing the focus so that all groups are represented fairly. So, ‘where to from here?’ some ask. I intend to have a good break, continue to volunteer in my chosen fields of passion, and enjoy time with my family and friends. Cr Jenny McKay

Extra places at Landsborough Kindy in 2020

2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Landsborough Community Kindergarten as it moves towards doubling its service by offering two groups per week. Kindergarten secretary Jess Powell was keen to let the local community know that there were still places available for next year and that the service – especially for healthcare card holders - was often more affordable than people realise. “Kindergarten is such a great start for young kids and for those on a healthcare card, the costs are just so affordable," Jess said. “Healthcare card holders are pleasantly surprised that the whole term cost is often what they thought they’d be paying for a day,” she said. Currently the kindergarten has 22 children attending, which is planned to double in size next year with the addition of the extra group. “We are looking forward to bringing our service more in line with other kindergartens by offering a beginning and an end of week group on a rotating five-day fortnight,” Jess said. The Landsborough Community Kindergarten has a long history in the area and has been operating at the present site since 1965. In recent years the back area of the kindergarten has been fully enclosed and air conditioning added, and the hidden gem of a beautiful outdoor playground is a particular drawcard. From the churches Gift giving is a tradition in almost all countries and cultures. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, with holiday makers and family members joining us, our shops are full of frantic gift buyers. Gifts are also central to the nativity story. The Gospel tells us of the Magi bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. While we might struggle to find these items stocked in our local shops, in the busyness of this time we

Health &Beauty When thank you is not enough! Thousands of Queensland organ and tissue recipients have stood united on one sentiment – that saying “thank you” to their donor family “doesn’t feel quite enough”. DonateLife Thank You Day, held last Sunday, November 17, is a national day to recognise the difference the gift of life makes to transplant recipients and their families. Some Queensland recipients have described how they felt about their donor families. Local endurance athlete and liver recipient, Kate Clark, agreed it was difficult to put the gratitude she felt towards her donor and their family into words. “For the past 7,966 days I have tried to do things each and every day to honour the selfless gift of

Acupuncture

life that I received, whether it be by achieving athletic feats or celebrating milestones,” Kate said. “This anonymous family are never far from my thoughts and without them none of the past 21+ years would have been possible. So, when words are all I have for now, thank you for being the reason I have a story.” Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service donation specialist nurse coordinator, Shona McDonald, said Queensland organ donors had given well over 5,000 precious gifts of life since transplantation records began in 1989, and tissue donors had transformed tens of thousands of lives. “A great way to honour our donors is to follow

Hairdressing

their example and sign up on the Australian Organ Donor Register,” Shona said. "To date this year, the Sunshine Coast has had 3,603 extra registrations, compared to 3,035 in the same period last year. So, we also want to say 'thank you' to all those extra people who took the time to register their decision and potentially save a life.” Fast facts: • In 2018, 94 Queensland organ donors saved the lives of 287 Australians. • About 920 Queenslanders who died last year donated life-transforming tissue for transplantation. • The number of Queensland donors has more than doubled since national reform in 2009.

Dine In Take Out with Lea Parkes

Ohhh what a night

As with all jobs, I have a share of what I describe as good days. However, I have to say heading along to The Barrel at Clouds Vineyard for its inaugural winemakers' dinner last Thursday night definitely fell into the category of absolutely awesome days. While I don’t mind a sausage sizzle and you all know that I am quite partial to a scone, it was really nice to try the amazingly creative five course dishes served on the night, matched with a range of Whiskey Gully Wines. The menu was put together by The Barrel's very own talented chef Kelly Jackson in consultation with the winemakers John and Denice Arlidge, who were there on the night to give everyone the opportunity to hear their story and passion for their wines. Actually, John didn’t just share his knowledge of the wines but provided entertainment for the happy crowd ending the night performing some wonderfully mellow tunes on his guitars, yes not one but two guitars. As the first event of this type to be hosted by the new owners, it was wonderful to see the professionalism and enthusiasm of the dedicated Clouds team. It was definitely one of those nights that I would describe as having a lot of love in the room. The owners are clearly very proud of their staff and were keen to praise everyone for their hard work and passion in making their first winemakers' dinner a reality. If you missed this wonderful night then you will want to keep an eye on their Facebook page for the monthly dinners they are planning to run from February to November. The February dinner will feature Granite Ridge Winery.

Out & About Women's war stories revealed

To coincide with Remembrance Day, the Maleny Arts Council partnered with independent theatre makers Musical Theatre Australia to bring 'A Girl’s Guide to World War’ to the Maleny Community Centre. The talented local cast absolutely wowed the audiences at two sold out shows on Saturday night (November 9) and a Sunday matinee (November 10), which was followed by drinks on the deck. Clearly the audience enjoyed the opportunity to meet and congratulate the actors after the show.

In the Garden Ask Brownie

The grandkids are growing zucchini plants. They are flowering but the fruit doesn’t develop and they stay small before falling off. What could be the problem? Jenny, Palmwoods Hi Jenny, Zucchini plants are a great choice for kids to grow as they grow quickly, are fairly large (so look spectacular), produce big yellow flowers and are supposed to make large healthy zucchini fruits. What you’ve described is a common problem with zucchini, as well as with pumpkins. It’s a problem of pollination … it’s not happening. Zucchini plants grow separate male and female flowers. The females are easy to recognise as they will have a little zucchini attached to their base. The males won’t have this but they do have a little conical structure in their centre. This is where the male flower pollen is found. This lack of pollination can be a problem even if you have plenty of bees at your place. Your grandkids will have to do what the bees aren’t doing – that’s to take the pollen from the male flower and transfer it to the female pollen receptacle (it’s technically called a stigma). I do this by going down to the patch in the morning – and I do this every morning – and

plucking off a male flower. By carefully removing the large yellow petals, you are left with a bit of stalk with the conical structure covered with stamens of pollen. I then dab this carefully onto a female flower stigma to transfer some of the pollen. This is repeated on one more flower before the male flower is discarded and another picked to pollinate other female flowers. The best time to do this is in the cool of the morning when the male and female flowers are fresh. They generally only open for one day, so you only have a limited time to get the job done. Also, the pollination process doesn’t work so well in hot weather, so the cooler morning helps overcome this. This should fix the problem and the female flowers will grow large tasty zucchini fruits for the grandkids. And it’s a good lesson for them to learn to recognise the different parts of flowers and what they do. Zucchini plants can also produce mainly male or mainly female flowers depending on the conditions when they are first growing. Stressed plants – due to poor watering – will produce a lot of male flowers and no female flowers. After a while they’ll grow some female

but no male flowers … which makes it impossible to get pollination happening. Older plants also tend to grow female flowers with only the occasional male. The way to get around this is to make sure the zucchini plants are regularly watered when they are establishing – water them every day. This way they’ll want to produce both male and females at the same time. I also plant two zucchini plants at a time and stagger them so I’ve got two new plants, two established plants and two older plants, which I’ll replace with two new plants once they get too old. By keeping this six plant rotation, I’ll always have plenty of male and female flowers to ensure a constant supply of zucchinis.

The heat is on

Shop 3, 28 Simpson St, Beerwah

with Spencer and Karen Shaw A common question for this time of year is “are these plants tough, can they survive the heat?” It’s a good question, as you don’t want to invest in a plant only to see it wither in a few days. Luckily for many of the plants we stock, the answer we can give is a very definitive yes! Here’s a few tips in selecting your plants and what you can do to ensure survival when planting. First up, select stock that is hardened to the conditions you’re planting into. Plants coming out of a shade house will burn when planted in the sun. Always select sun hardened stock - we grow all our stock out in the sun (apart from the real shade lovers). Next up, although soil preparation is an article in itself, let’s briefly say that through digging, mulching and watering you need to ensure you have a friable, moist soil to plant into. We have found coir peat to be invaluable in improving soil moisture. We stock large compressed blocks – just add water. Last but not least, go native for the toughest and most beautiful plants around and that’s where we can help you.

ARIES March 21 - April 20 You may be uncertain about what direction to follow in your business affairs. However, with Mercury turning direct you will choose to be very direct in your speech. Take care not to hurt anybody’s feelings. Just stick to being efficient and useful, and you will shine in other’s support to you. Enjoy a boost to your enthusiasm after the 21st. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 It may be likely that Mercury’s direct movement forward from the 21st may burst your partner’s bubble! That should turn out to be a good thing in the end. From the 22nd the Sun’s entry into Sagittarius and your 8th sector of sharing begins a month where you are ready to tackle challengers and transform your life. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 From the 21st your ruler, Mercury, goes direct with wisdom and intuition, earning you daily agreements and mutual understanding. There is a Virgo Moon before the weekend and that will be good for your social ties. When the Sun enters Sagittarius from the 22nd, the weekend also sees you working on your family holiday plans. CANCER June 24 - July 22 Meeting your fellow companions half way should be beneficial for all before the weekend. With the Sun entering the sign of Sagittarius, from the 22nd you will encounter plenty of enthusiasm for work needing to be done. There will be no shortage of ideas and plans about all the things you want to do this weekend.

around the dog’s neck and sees him out. A customer, who has been watching in amazement, follows the dog to a house several blocks away, where it rings the doorbell to be let in. As the owner appears at the door, the customer says: “What a remarkable dog!” “Remarkable?” snorts the owner. “This is the second time this week he’s forgotten his keys.”

with Edgar J. Winter www.astroclairvoyant.com

LEO July 23 – August 22 You begin opening up happy travel plans because the Sun enters friendly Fire sign, Sagittarius, and that goes well with your own Sun sign. In fact, you may have some luck with sudden big changes that can be very exciting. The New Moon the following week makes you want to travel and explore the world, enlarging views on life. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 You have a clear vision of where you would like to go this week since Mercury, your ruling planet, moves forward again. This helps you with information gathering, travel, paper work, repairs and communication. By the weekend things should be busier than usual at home and so you will need to be clear headed. Accidents happen if rushed! LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The atmosphere for the week ahead is warm, friendly and helpful, whether you are with family or at home. Because the Sun will enter the sign of Sagittarius by the weekend it will bring lively, cheerful, optimistic moods and high hopes. A local trip is full of adventure. Weekend sees the Moon in your sign making you want things to go your way. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 With the Sun changing signs from Scorpio to Sagittarius this will surely brighten your efforts to increase your income and acquire special belongings, making your outlook more optimistic. You should be wanting to make improvements especially with friends or co-workers. The weekend is favoured for coping with correcting misunderstandings.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Do not let anyone’s bad, grouchy mood, keep you from a weekend of supreme pleasure. Because the Sun moves into your sign, you should have a month of celebration of life, love, and laughter! Life-changing occasion comes with secrets and sudden actions. The New Moon is in your sign so plant the seeds for success and happiness. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Because the Sun changes sign into Sagittarius, the weekend begins your annual month-long period of self-reflection. There might be an inharmonious trend over the weekend that will require your tact and your diplomacy. You will be more comfortable with one-on-one time with someone, especially on your own terms and turf. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Because the Sun sign now enters upbeat and compatible Sagittarius, this brings you feelings of joy and gratitude, and happy adventures all month! The weekend should see a joyous celebration of life, love and friendship. The following week, contrasting trends motivate you as you are pushed onto an edgy agenda. Have quiet retreat. PISCES February 20 - March 20 With Mercury turning direct this week it is still beholds you to go slowly. There is some misdirected energy to contend with. You can manage any partnership situations by staying focussed on the overall picture, so do not get overly hung up on the small stuff. The weekend sees emphasis on business and professional affairs all month long.

Smile bright with Dental Excel....

Dr David Marley

Dr David Marley has 45 years of extensive experience and has developed a great interest in restorative dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation as well as great belief in the benefits of cosmetic dentistry. “I always believe that a healthy mouth and an attractive smile are a great asset which should be nurtured and valued. Healthy teeth are acknowledged to have a great part to play in

supporting good general health,” David says. David still keeps up to date with new innovations in his field such as his experience with surgical implants. He enjoys sharing this professional knowledge with his patients to assist improving quality of life for all. David said their aim is to provide a comprehensive service to the local community for many years to come.

Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and to retain those

annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. Finbarr also holds a postgraduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.

Dr Tiffany Chan Dr Tiffany Chan qualified as a dentist at the University of Liverpool UK in 2010 and upon graduating, she went on to work in the Community Dental Service through the National Health Service where she treated many patients with dental phobia, children and special needs patients. This experience enhanced her people skills in putting

people at ease in the dental surgery. She is gentle, great with children and those who just really hate going to the dentist! Tiffany has a great interest in extractions and wisdom teeth removal and has completed an intensive oral surgery course with maxillofacial surgeons in Cambodia.

Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns. She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to Indigenous communities.

Shirly is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, aesthetic dentistry and root canals. Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.

Dr Dominika Zaremba-Stronczak Dr Dominika Zaremba-Stronczak attained her qualification in 2007 from Wroclaw Medical University in Poland. After working in various public and private sectors throughout Poland, she moved to Sardinia, an Italian Island in the Mediterranean Sea before settling in Australia with her young family in 2016.

Dominika is extremely detail-oriented, with a special interest in preventative and restorative dentistry. She is a very warm, gentle and compassionate professional, and her treatments are completely tailored to the needs of both children and adults. She is passionate about ensuring her patients receive the best care available.
