APRIL 20 2016

Hi Everyone

L

ast week was even busier than usual for us, with so many different events happening that we headed along to, including the launch of the Maleny Show. We are creating some pretty good stats winning naming rights to a pavilion … it’s now two out of the three times that we have been involved. This year we have the honour of having the naming rights to the Fruit and Vegetable Pavilion, which is rather fitting for us. For many years Brownie has been a very keen vege gardener, and on occasions our customers have even been given a bunch of basil or rosemary, or a bag of lemons when they purchased a classified. So it was a lovely coincidence this week as Brownie turned 50 (yep he is older than me!!) and the GC&M News Team had a beautiful timber sign created for him with the wording – Brownie’s Vege Patch. So from our whole team and those who enjoy his regular gardening advice column – here’s to a productive 50 more years in the vege garden. Regards,

1m bike rider rule to stay Following an independent assessment, the Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey recently announced that the state government has decided to keep the Minimum Passing Distance Road rule, to boost safety for Queensland cyclists. “The one-metre rule is intended to improve interactions between cyclists and motorists on Queensland roads by making motorists more aware of cyclists and encouraging them to leave enough space between their vehicle and the bicycle rider,” Mr Bailey said. Mr Bailey said the rule requires motor vehicles to provide cyclists with a minimum passing distance of one metre when overtaking cyclists at 60km/h or less and a metre and a half when the speed limit is greater than 60km/hr. “Motorists can cross centre lines, even on roads with double unbroken lines and drive on painted islands, as long as it is safe to do so to pass a bicycle rider,” he said. “A second phase of the Stay Wider campaign, will have a strong educational focus, and will run from April to June to remind road users of the rule, including the ability of motorists to cross centre lines when overtaking bicycle riders.” This is good news according to Beerwah cyclist Mary Garden. “As a keen cyclist, it is great news that after a two-year-trial, the minimum passing distance for motorists and cyclists is here to stay,” she said. “Fatalities and injuries have been caused by motorists driving too close to cyclists and it

is very encouraging to hear there has been a reduction in fatalities during this time. “I think the widespread media coverage of the rules have helped motorists become more aware of us on the road. “I have noticed a huge difference with cars definitely giving us more room and making us feel safer on the road. And there seems to be more goodwill, with some motorists even giving us friendly smiles and waves. “However, there are a few buses and trucks who give us close shaves, even up Landsborough Hill where there are two lanes some of the way and a shoulder for us to ride on! So there needs to be a bit more education of these drivers. And there are motorists who seem to be unaware that they can now cross over the white centre lines when it is safe to do so. “At the same time I also think that if we are to share the road, then cyclists need to do their part. While legally cyclists are allowed to ride side by side providing they are no more than 1.5 metres apart, I think most of the roads in the hinterland are too narrow to do this safely and it is more difficult and frustrating for motorists who try to pass. “But overall a really positive outcome.”

‘Popstars’ Superheroes? 50’s rock ‘n’ roll? A crazy town of vampires? If you’ve been in the cast or in the audience for any of their last three school musicals, you’ll know what we’re talking about. At Beerwah High, they like to shake things up a little. So for this year’s show, it was decided that boy bands and girl bands of the 1990’s would be in order. The production, ‘Popstars’, pits boy band against girl band as they compete for the ultimate trophy. Think hyper-coloured costumes, dynamic dance routines, a hilarious script and hits by the Spice Girls, MC Hammer, Britney Spears and Bon Jovi

Taylor Woodward, Sharlie Dal Broi, Alysha Anderson and Sarah James

to name a few. The cast was announced after a rigorous audition process last year and six hours of rehearsals each week has the performing arts block resonating with iconic songs of the 90’s such as ‘I’m too sexy’, ‘Who let the dogs out’, ‘Can’t touch this’, ‘Everybody” (backstreet’s back) and ‘All Star’. This is the fourth musical Mrs Holland and Mrs Stephenson have directed together and they are thrilled with the commitment and professionalism of all involved this year. “We’re enjoying the rehearsal process, because we’re working with a strong and dedicated team….a lovely bunch of students,” they said.

Queensland’s most talented woodworkers and artists will share their expertise at the 20th Maleny Wood Expo from April 30 to May 2. This year’s Maleny Wood Expo offers a range of hands-on workshop opportunities for the whole family. Master craftsman, Ross Annels a studio furniture maker well known for his chairs, will run several ‘Get Bent – Steam bending and Laminating Workshops’. Ross has taught wood bending at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in the USA, to Indonesian Forest Product Researchers, to university design students, and to woodworkers from all around Australia. Maleny’s Donald Powell, a multi award-winning wood sculptor, will again hold his popular twoday ‘Hand Held Carving Workshop’. Don teaches extensively, contributes regularly to national wood magazines and received a Churchill Fellowship to study woodcarving teaching methods in 1996. A virtuoso carver, his work ranges from miniature to life size and is characterised by realism and exceptional attention to detail. Another Maleny favourite, Richard Knight, will run a full day workshop, in which participants will construct a milking stool using traditional mortise and tenon joints and simple hand tools. Trevor to leave area but takes great memories By Lea Parkes As Trevor Taylor farewells the Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains for a move to the Gold Coast he takes with him plenty of great memories of his 17 years with the club. This is not the first time Trevor has left a club, having originally joined the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise in 1989, where he was recognised with a Paul Harris Fellow for his efforts. In 1997, Trevor and his wife Robyn sold their real estate business and moved to a farm in Peachester. At that time Trevor joined the Rotary Club of Maleny, being elected to the board, and becoming President Elect. Around that time the Maleny Rotary Club decided to start a new club in the Glass House Mountains, this took some time and work for a period of about eight months. Between Brian Doyle, Bill Dethiefs and Trevor, they chartered a new club in the Glass House Mountains on 15th October, 1999 and Trevor was the Charter President. Over those 16 years, he has served on all directorships, secretary, treasurer and served as President again in 2004 - 2005. In 2010, a sapphire was added to his Paul Harris Fellow. Trevor has served at District level for many years. He has served as Club Coordinator of a group of Sunshine Coast Clubs in the late 1990s and then later, as Assistant Governor in 2000-2001 of a similar group of clubs. Trevor started working on RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) projects in 1995, going to Thailand and the Papua New Guinea after the tsunami in 2000. In 2004, he went to see what work could be done in the

BEERWAH DENTURE CLINIC

Solomon Islands, settling on the western province around Gizo. He organised teams to go there, working with the local people on quite a few schools and medical centres over the ensuing years. He has been back 25 times in the past 11 years. Trevor said it has been a great experience being a Rotarian here in the Glass House Mountains for the last 17 years! “We have been able to help a lot of local people who needed it, I guess we all should realise that it is not a level playing field out there, is it? “Some people cop it a bit rougher than others. The local people here have been very supportive of the work we have been doing,” he said. “Also, being involved with the people in the Solomons and PNG has been a wonderful experience, as well. Our Club has been very involved in helping to improve their schools and medical centres, so a lot more people have these things available to them, than before. “It is so normal to go to a school there and find no water, no toilets, and no books in the whole school! We have gone on a voluntary basis to help the local people there to improve these things. I, personally, have been to the Solomons more than 20 times, and also to PNG, Fiji, Nauru and Thailand quite a few times as well, ” he said. And never one to miss the opportunity to encourage others, Trevor is keen to remind readers that if any of you are interested in this type of opportunity, please contact the members of the Local Rotary Club here in the Glass House Mountains on info@ glasshouserotary.com.au or phone 0478 813 630.

The Maleny Arts Council are giving local residents a local opportunity to take advantage of Brisbane’s cutting-edge theatre world without the capital city costs and the traffic. ‘Motherland’ will be performed at the Maleny Community Centre on May 4 at 7.00pm. ‘Motherland’ is part of the current Queensland Theatre Company’s program, and is considered one of the most important Australian plays to have emerged for many years according to Maleny Arts Council’s (MAC) program director Professor Peter Lavery. “It has been described as passionate, gripping theatre that weaves the true stories of three strong women that span continents and time and depict love and loss in times of revolution and war. “Motherland has won several awards for writing, production and acting, following its Brisbane debut in 2013, including the peoples’ choice awards of the Queensland Theatre Industry,” he said. Because it is ideal for seniors who remember the celebrated Tritton family of Brisbane, as well as for upper secondary and university students of theatre studies, English and contemporary history, MAC has offered a special deal of a free ticket for every 10 tickets sold. “Schools and other groups should contact the treasurer

John Marsden on 5494 2584 for the chance to access this offer; individual tickets can be obtained from trybooking.com or the Maleny Information Centre,” Professor Lavery said. One of the three protagonists is Nelle Tritton who famously travelled to Moscow, met and married the deposed Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky and subsequently helped him escape from the Nazis before WWII. Another is a Russian writer Nina Berberova who became her friend; and Alyona who arrives in Brisbane during the turbulent time of the Fitzgerald enquiry and draws the threads together. MAC’s president Professor Jennifer Radbourne said another bonus for seeing the play in Maleny is the tradition of meeting the cast after the performance on the deck of the Community Centre. “It would be invaluable for students to be able to discuss this important play with the cast and crew, and we can offer them that opportunity,”she said. The author Katherine LyallWatson has received critical acclaim for Motherland from actors and critics alike. Doug Kennedy, 612 abc said [This play] ‘is very very wellwritten…wonderful acting, the women who are so strong, passionate and fiery…a terrific play.’

Art with the ability to inspire

50th Anniversary Celebration

Contributed By Ashleigh Dwan Women travelled from Gladstone to Glasshouse recently to attend Donna Downey’s ‘Metamorphosis’ workshop, a two-day mixed media and fabric art event held recently at Joybells Scrapbooking in Landsborough. The group of 20 ladies had their heart set on learning from one of the industry’s most famous Mixed media US artists. Coming together in a group like this means more than meeting their idol, as this workshop forms an inspirational and creative space, to learn from one another. Joy Muscillo, the owner of Joybells and a mixed media artist herself, says it’s the creating and watching everyone else creating that is so important about the weekend. “The inspiration is contagious as you can practically feel the creativity when Donna talks about the importance of colour and the use of different mediums,” she said. Mixed media is a specialist art form that requires the use of different layers to create the overall piece. This workshop looks at the idea of transformation, beginning with muslin fabrics and building structural layers before stenciling and adding coloured paint. Art speaks to the soul and is a spiritual process for the artists. Where there was once a perception for some that art was scary, it is now something that allows you to make mistakes and learn from it. In a way, mixed media is like taking a step back to your childhood, as your fingers become the main tool and paint is a medium to express yourself. This is the third time Donna has taught at Joybells in Australia after making contact with Joy at an international art convention. There are also talks about another workshop next year.

Caloundra Amaranth meeting on Saturday, April 9 celebrated the 50th year wedding anniversary of Jan and Alan Holdsworth of Beerwah and a presentation of a potted yellow rose was given by Nancye and Norrie Morris to mark the occasion.

Do You Suffer From NERVE PAIN? Nerve pain is a particular type of pain that feels different to other types of pain. It often feels like shooting, stabbing or burning pain. Sometimes it can be as sharp and sudden as an electric shock. Nerve irritation can also produce numbness, tingling, itchiness, or numerous other types of altered sensation. Nerve pain, like all other types of pain, is NOT normal

In many cases of nerve pain, the problem/cause is Spinal Subluxation – a condition where one or more vertebrae have been pushed out of alignment and irritates the nerves that exit your The human body is designed to be strong, flexible, and pain-free. Health is spine. Your nerves branch off normal, pain and discomfort are not. So the question is - why do so many from your spinal cord, and then pass through tiny holes between the vertebrae. When the spine has been people experience pain and discomfort? The answer is quite simple. affected, the nerves are almost always affected as well.

Life is Stressful!

Physically, mentally and chemically stressful. Physical stresses include excessive sitting, repetitive stress from jobs and hobbies, poor posture, poor sleeping position, etc. Mental or emotional stress from finances, relationships and being too busy furthers the problems by tensing our muscles. And finally, most of us aren't eating as well as we should or drinking enough water, which adds to the growing numbers of stressors our bodies must deal with.

Our body has limits

What is the solution?

For over 120 years, chiropractors have known that spinal misalignments affect the nervous system. If you have Spinal Subluxation, nothing other than a chiropractic adjustment will correct the cause of your pain. Drugs may reduce the symptom, but only an adjustment will correct the cause. Beerwah Writers Group celebrates 10th anniversary

Contributed by Kate Wright In March 2006 a group of 12 people chose to meet regularly to encourage local writers, authors and poets in publishing their work, through discussion, education, shared experience and mutual activity. For 10 years, an average of 16 members have met regularly, many of them achieving successful publication of books, stories, articles and scripts. Joint efforts have resulted in publication of books: ‘A Tapestry of Tales’ 2007, ‘Reflections’ 2009, ‘Witches from the Hinterland’ 2011, ‘Tales for Tots & Tweens’ 2013. And three issues of magazine-style booklet ‘Five Minute Tales’ in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Due to popular demand, this publication will continue with two issues in 2016, projected dates are – June and November. Total membership continues to be more than 20 and includes some foundation members. At the recent AGM most officers were re-elected and a small ‘operations’ committee appointed; all of whom are keen to tackle planned projects in the near future. Buy a kit today and live to enjoy tomorrow Helen Evans of Maleny is living proof that the Rotary Bowelscan program saves lives. Six years ago Helen’s Rotary Bowelscan test came back as positive. Helen said the shock was immense. “But thanks to the Rotary program my life was saved through the early detection of the cancer and subsequent operation,” she said. Bowel cancer results in more deaths than breast cancer or prostate cancer each year. Approximately 14,000 cases are detected and unfortunately about 50% of those prove fatal. Early detection is the key as there is a 90% chance of recovery: a late detection generally can prove fatal. The simple Test Kits cost $15.00 and are available from all hinterland pharmacies for all of May this year. A new type of kit became available last year, which is easier to use and includes easy-to-follow instructions and a prepaid envelope to mail off the sample direct to the accredited laboratory. Results are then sent direct to you from the laboratory. No need to drop samples back to the pharmacy. Importantly bowel cancer is not just a disease of the elderly and both Federal and State Health departments recommend every person over 40 gets tested annually. So it’s up to you – hide behind the good old Aussie saying of ‘She’ll be right mate’ and do nothing, or face reality head on and buy a test kit from your local pharmacy. Remember spending a small amount and having the test done could be just the best $15.00 you ever spend.

by Ian Hall, from All Energy HQ When it comes to determining what a good solar deal is, the similarities are surprising. If you buy budget solar panels, you’ll find that they are usually cheap because low quality materials have been substituted. The solar advertising screams “Never pay an electricity bill again!” and “5kW for only $3,999” and “Save thousands off your electricity bill each year”. No wonder so many people are excited, because at that rate solar will pay for itself in no time at all and it’s a better investment than, well, anything. Sadly however … “the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price.” If you choose to buy a no frills inverter, then the chances of a small component failing increases substantially. Rather, you should go for an inverter which will give you the optimum power production per day and has the technology to optimise your solar system to its full potential. Some inverters will even allow you to oversize your solar system, i.e. you have a 5kW inverter which will allow you to install up to 8kW of panels, hence you will be able to harvest the sun’s power and receive more production per day. Likewise if you choose to buy from a pushy door-to-door salesman, or a call centre who will call you out of the blue, or a ‘low cost big solar company’, you probably aren’t buying from a company who will give you support and after sales service and who has been in the solar industry for many years and knows the value of a customer. Budget solar systems might work for a while. But they can and do fail regularly and the company then does not answer your phone call for service and back up. To know the difference between good products and cheap products check with your local suppliers who have been around for many years and will give you honest and transparent advice, backed up by years of experience and reliable after sales service. Buying good quality solar is worth a little more time and effort. My wife always said … “all women cost money, a better women cost more.”

After completing a Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry) in 2001 Carly O’Donoghue went on to work for an established Podiatrist practice in Brisbane. In 2003, Carly embraced the local community and set up her own Podiatry business in Landsborough. Fast forward 12 years and a larger more vibrant clinic was purpose built for the community in June 2015. An orthotic lab, a dedicated foot and leg assessment area with a digital foot scanner and rehab equipment, as well as three modern treatment rooms await locals, when they step through the front doors. With two full time Podiatrists (Jason and Kelli) both with Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry) degrees, referrals continue to grow the business due to their integrity, strong patient relationships, and thorough treatment practices. Carly has also returned to treating patients on a Tuesday after four years with her gorgeous daughter Maggie, and the two receptionists Nicole and Ali are always happy to assist with your appointment. We also stock footwear (‘New Balance’ running shoes, ‘Revere’ sandals and closed in orthotic friendly shoes). These days ‘Stepping Out Podiatry’ are definitely delivering a one stop shop for their clients convenience. Carly is hoping that they have the runs on the board to be considered a local business? However she is leaving Carly (far right) and the Stepping Out team that up to you to decide.

Opening of Banjo’s Bakery Cafe hits the spot

Excitement was in the air as customers packed in to sample the bakery and cafe goodies at the opening of Banjo’s Bakery Cafe in Beerwah. With the first customer ready at 5.30am ahead of the 6.00am opening, by 9.30am, nearly 100 customers had come through the door. Manager Cindy Rixon was clearly thrilled with the turnout and the spacious cafe was packed with interested locals and visitors keen to try the huge range of baked goods, savouries, gourmet pita and beverages. It was all hands on deck for the opening morning with the bakery and cafe bustling with customers, at least six in-house bakers and numerous friendly front of house staff all working hard to provide the unique Banjo’s concept of an authentic bakery combined with a contemporary modern dine in space. The customers’ response was really positive with comments like, “it looks fantastic, it is in a great spot here, awesome selection of food, nice and handy for working in Beerwah and the coffee is great!”

Beerwah Meats - goodbyes and greetings!

Jeremi and Jody Scott, owners of Beerwah Meats for the last five and a half years, are moving onto a new chapter in life. While still living locally, Jeremi has decided to put his knives down for a well earned break. “I would like to thank all our customers and supporters in the time we have been here – your loyalty and regular support has meant so much over the years,” he said. Taking over the reigns from Monday, April 11 are Jason and Kirrily. Moving from a similar business in Dubbo, NSW, they have recently moved to Glass House Mountains. Wanting to reassure the regulars that they will still offer the same friendly, customer oriented service and regular favourites, they will be finding their feet with what the locals are looking for. “We are introducing grass-fed and free range lamb and beef, and we will be closing at 2.00pm now on Saturday,” said Jason. Call in today and say hello. www.gcnews.com.au

Environment Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc.

We care about our environment

It’s all about diversity

with Ann McGrath Recently I was a participant in a workshop, ‘All about Caterpillars’, run by Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare and made possible by the very supportive Sunshine Coast Council. Who would have thought that one could spend hours delving into the delights of the life cycle of a butterfly, but we did. I was reminded of how important all living things are as part of our environment. Did you know that according to the Centre for Biological Diversity there are approximately 1.3 million registered species of invertebrates in the world? The vertebrates, which include us, are about 66,000 so we are hugely outnumbered. There are days when I can believe that, when some of those 1.3 million encroach on my comfortable way of life. It is easy to believe that rats and mice that are so difficult to trap, bugs that make our plants look just plain awful, wasps that love to make nests in the brick cavities, paper wasps who build in the most inconvenient of places, ants, snakes, spiders and a whole range of other little creatures, conspire to make our life difficult. Thanks to technology, we have at our fingertips the means to destroy all of them, some more easily than others. It is hard to imagine how some of those ‘pests’ are important to our environment but having lived in town with a limited range of wildlife and a controlled environment and then in the bush with ever increasing diversity in the wildlife, I now appreciate that the more life and the more varied it is the healthier our environment. I now think twice before I spray, trap, poison or destroy – except for March Flies! Just gotta love the bush!

Threat to Glenview forest continues

Sadly the battle to save Steve Irwin Way Forest at Glenview is far from over, according to the Save Steve Irwin Way Forest group. Having recently reviewed the Department of Transport and Main Road's (TMR) final federal government Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act referral, they found inaccuracies in the reporting of important threatened ecological communities in the area. The group questioned why TMR hadn’t identified any relevant species contained within the freshwater lake which lies in the planned path of the bulldozers. According to forest advocate Wayne Reid, the lake is a remnant of the original roadworks decades ago and it has become a haven for rare and threatened frog species according to surveys done in the past. “It’s an established ecosystem now, and to look at it, its value is priceless in terms of local and tourist amenity and for the environment alike,” said Mr Reid. “You would find it hard to believe they plan on filling it in. It would no doubt contain a variety of Fish, Turtle, Water Bird and Frog species.” TMR claim as a result of meetings with stakeholders, the original clearing area will be reduced. However Mr Reid is not yet satisfied with the outcomes. “From day one the plan to impact any of this forest was a bad idea according to the community and local environment experts. It's still a bad idea. “When you look at what remains of Sunshine Coast ecosystems as a whole, this area is a remnant of a remnant. It's already been severely impacted in the past, so if we really don’t want to see Koalas, big predator birds, Frogs, and ground Marsupials become extinct locally, then we must keep this project out of the forest,” he explained. After repeated requests from the Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest group that the new interchange be built on land already cleared to the east of the highway, Minister for Main Roads Mark Bailey has refused the suggestion on economic grounds. According to the Minister … ‘The project footprint encroaches on the Mooloolah River flood plain. However, constructing further to the east within the floodplain is not considered a viable option as the cost of resuming the necessary land, and the cost of building... would be significantly high.’ Mr Reid says that it is a big call from the Minister to say he won't avoid the forest purely because of economics on a $1.134 billion project. “Firstly, we have asked to see cost and engineering analysis on moving east out of the forest, and the fact is, that’s never been done. Add to that the growing and overwhelming consensus from scientists and environmental experts that we simply cannot afford to continue to mow down our old forests and destroy ecosystems,” he said. School News Awareness and understanding

In the past month, Guppy’s Early Learning Centre at Beerwah invited families to participate in Epilepsy and Autism Awareness days, as well as Clean up Australia Day and Harmony Day. Each of these special days were marked by dressing up in colour, a full program catering to that special day including cooking experiences, music and movement sessions and art and craft related to that special event. Families and staff donated a gold coin that will go directly to Autism Queensland, and Educators utilised group times to acknowledge additional needs and inform children of the importance of respect, empathy and diversity. Our vacation care children had a special visitor, Lizzie Vaughan from ASD Tutoring and Support Services, who spoke with our school aged children about Autism and what it means for each of us at day care.

You Said It Thanks to members of the public

by Senior Sergeant Kim Cavell, Beerwah Police Police wish to acknowledge the combined efforts of members of the community who assisted the driver of the vehicle in the serious traffic crash on the Bruce Highway in Bells Creek last Wednesday. A single vehicle landed upside down in the centre medium strip, caught fire and trapped the seriously injured driver. One witness used a fire extinguisher retrieved from his own vehicle to extinguish the fire. Numerous people stopped and righted the vehicle and attempted to extricate the driver however officers from QFES, assisted by QPS, were required to cut him free from the vehicle where he was airlifted to hospital and is recovering. The combined efforts from these members of the public who stopped and rendered assistance no doubt contributed to the driver being alive and their efforts are acknowledged by emergency services. It also serves as a reminder to all members of the public to take care on our highways and always be aware of what vehicles may be travelling around you. We ultimately all want to arrive safely at our destinations. Investigations are continuing into the traffic crash.

Send your letter to email: editorial@gcnews.com.au fax: 5438 7446 post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519 In last week’s edition, we put out the challenge to readers. What do you think ‌ will dual laning Steve Irwin Way help the Bruce Highway; should the Bruce Highway be triple laned instead; would you be OK with extra highway traffic using Steve Irwin Way?

If the Bruce Highway is the problem, just upgrade it quickly, and get on with it. Why not four lanes for the highway instead of three while you are at it? Des Landsborough

Here is what you had to say

With regard to the widening of the Steve Irwin Way, this would be a cheaper alternative - a short term solution - but would not, in the long run be of much help. There are businesses and homes all along the Steve Irwin Way that would sadly be affected, many of which the government would have to purchase. The Steve Irwin Way is an access road for people that live in the towns of Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah Valley and should remain as such if the highway were widened; it would not have to be used as an alternative route. With the population growing, not to mention the imminent growth at Bells Creek, widening the Bruce Highway to three lanes each side is a much safer option and would ease the situation well into the future. The huge gap of land between northbound and southbound is a waste of space and a low concrete wall would be more efficient. Why is it that other countries have superior highways of three and sometimes four lanes that stretch for miles, often interstate, but Australia can't do this? Widening the Bruce could begin at once without much effect on local people or the highways' use itself. This should have been done years ago instead of all the money that has been poured into tunnelling around Brisbane. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

This has to be one of the worst suggestions I have heard. Yes we do need dual laning on Steve Irwin Way but at the cost of prolonging the triple laning of Bruce Highway is a ridiculous idea to say the least. Especially when it is suggested that it is be used as an alternative route, as opposed to a scenic route. Barry Beerwah I think a three lane Bruce Highway is fantastic. Of course I understand it will take some time. I am not sure if duplicating the Steve Irwin Way would be the solution. I live in Landsborough just off Isambert Road and I would hate to think that I would have to cross two lanes to turn right. Maybe you are going to put traffic lights at each intersection? That is going to make a great alternative when the Bruce Highway is congested. I am not sure if you realise but there are a lot of properties whose driveways are on the Steve Irwin Way. It is not too bad at the start of Steve Irwin Way heading towards Mooloolah but past the Big Kart Track you have a lot of intersections and driveways. How dangerous would this be with double lanes? I would hate to be reversing out of my driveway. Maybe this will even cause more accidents if the road is duplicated. The Steve Irwin Way now is manageable and with the upgrade of Roys Road it is going to get even better.

www.gcnews.com.au

It would not matter how many lanes you put on the Bruce Highway, look at the three to four lanes into Brisbane. I travelled to Brisbane once using only the left lane and found it faster than any of the other lanes. It seems some Australians seem to think they are in Europe, and only use the two right hand lanes even when the left hand lanes are empty. Pity the cops do not spend more time policing the keep left rule thereby reducing road rage, lane swapping, and tailgating. There should be more focus on road congestion and accidents caused by those problems, instead of revenue collecting, like at Beerwah between Peachester Road lights and Roberts Road round about. If they upgrade Steve Irwin Way the speed limit will probably be reduced instead of increased as this seems to be the attitude around here every time they improve a road. Bob Peachester I would not support extra lanes, my house backs onto Steve Irwin Way and it is already noisy and dusty. As it is when there is an accident on the Bruce and traffic comes down Steve Irwin Way it makes it near impossible to get in and out of my street and there's no back way out. What's needed is more driver training and more police on the Bruce Highway. There is nothing wrong with the Bruce, it's just the speeding, tired and untrained P platers using it that are the problem. Donna Beerwah Yes we need to have dual lanes on Steve Irwin Way and yes we need to have three lanes on the Bruce Highway. However that would not have been too much help with this recent accident, because everyone would have had to still go down Beerburrum Road, which would still make it congested. What needs to be done between Bribie Island turn off and Caloundra is to enable the highway on the side that did not have the accident on it to have the traffic from the accident side to be moved to the other side, then be brought back after the accident. This would mean having a few areas to bring traffic from one side to the other, also you would have traffic cones placed to divide lanes. This is the only way to cover that area as there is few off ramps along that section. Clayton Glass House Mountains

We are opposed to the duplication of the road as this is an arterial road and not the highway. We live off this road and can sit at our intersection for up to five minutes if turning right to head north depending on the time of day. If an accident occurs on the Highway we have no hope of getting out of our street now. Graham Drive resident Landsborough

Tower effects for bees Your stories over the past weeks regarding the proposed Optus tower and NBN microwave towers for Beerwah / Glass House need a new slant. What is not mentioned in regard to microwave technology is bees and their ability to navigate and collect honey and the impact of this technology on them. A number of research papers have been published over the decades about the impact of mobile phone microwave radiation on bee's navigational skills. One such paper by Ulrich Warnke is titled 'Bees Birds and Mankind: Effects of Wireless Communication Technologies' (2009, 45 pages). To quote: 'Bees make use of the earth's magnetic field and its daily fluctuations for their orientation and communication. They also gain information on weather developments through the natural signals in the atmosphere.' Animals with a navigation system are extremely sensitive to electrical and magnetic fields. Scientists from Koblenz-Landau University (Germany) conducted experiments looking at the homing behaviour of bees as well as the development of honeycombs under the influence of Electro Magnetic Radiation (Kuhn et al. 2001, 2002; Stever et al. 2003, 2005; Harst et al. 2006). The construction of their honeycombs and homing capability was found to change if the bees are subjected to EM Radiation. Experiments with radiation from DECT cordless phones (1,900 MHz) showed bee colonies developed more slowly compared to the colonies not exposed to these fields. The homing ability of the bees after exposure to cordless and mobile phones is strongly reduced. Bees exposed to mobile phone antennae within 3/400 metres of hives also showed increased aggressiveness (Ruzicka, 2003). These are very serious impacts and are not being addressed anywhere here regarding new and present phone and NBN towers. Richard Giles Conondale

Re: Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-Branch In response to the column by Mr Brough MP in GC&M News, April 13 edition –The Landsborough Area Community Association Inc (LACA) is expressing condemnation of the proposal (?) from QR that the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-Branch renew their agreement for the land which contains the Landsborough War memorial, with a whole two weeks to respond and right on top of ANZAC Day. What on earth is QR thinking? This tiny piece of land is so important to the community and has been for many years. Our belief is that Sunshine Coast Council mows the grass, looks after the garden and the pavers etc. It would be interesting to hear from Cr Baberowski to confirm that this is correct and to hear his opinion on this matter. It would also be interesting to hear from our State Member – does he condone this action and if not, what is he doing about it? We urge as many as possible to follow Mr Brough’s request that letters be written to State Minister for Transport and the Commonwealth Games – e-mail: transport@ministerial.qld.gov.au. What will happen if the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-Branch can’t pay this exorbitant amount of money for the privilege of keeping the Landsborough War Memorial in its current central place? Will the ANZAC ceremonies be allowed to take place or will QR forbid the use of the land? It’s hard to believe that this type of high-handedness can happen, especially involving something as close to people’s hearts as a War Memorial. A. Husband Secretary LACA Inc

Railway agreement Firstly I would like to thank Mal Brough and Andrew Powell for their interest and advice concerning the RSL Memorial in Railway Park at Landsborough. Queensland Rail have reconsidered their offer and have made a very reasonable agreement available which the RSL will accept. I would also like to thank the people I dealt with at Queensland Rail for their consideration and understanding of the Sub-Branch’s concerns. We can now proceed with our plans for this year’s ANZAC Day memorial services. Kevin Beasley President Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch Inc.

Renovating your kitchen with refinancing capital The kitchen is the focal point of many Australian homes. It’s not just for cooking dinner, but it is increasingly becoming a place for people to sit down, relax and talk to their family. This might be the reason why so many people wish for a better, more comfortable kitchen – in fact, the Housing Industry Association tells us that kitchens and bathrooms took centre stage in the recent recovery of the renovations industry.

Better storage for fresh produce A recent study from McCrindle revealed that a third of the average shopping trip nowadays is made up of fresh fruit and vegetables. More Aussies are obviously taking an interest in improving their health, but it’s not much use if you can’t store all those healthy goodies!

Home loan refinancing gives you the chance to improve your quality of life by opening up capital to purchase a But large renovations can be expensive, second refrigerator, or even a deep freeze if you’re so inclined. By taking better particularly if you have grand designs. This is when refinancing your home loan control of your equity, you could be to unlock the equity that you’ve accrued taking better control of your diet too! so far could be an excellent decision – Home entertainment but what could you do with the capital? Your kitchen could be a great place to put a screen. Have you got some grand designs for your kitchen?

www.gcnews.com.au

We mentioned how the kitchen is a prime zone for connecting with the family, but just how do you capitalise on this? A recent Nielsen survey found that nearly every generation had one leisure activity in common – watching television. While many people snub TV as an anti-social activity, just think of how many conversations have started around the most recent episode of a mutually favourite television show? Your kitchen could be a great place to put a screen, giving you the chance to connect with your family or even follow along with your favourite cooking program. All thanks to the power of home loan refinancing. We often like to recommend that people take their home equity and reinvest

it back into property – and one of the best ways to do that is to improve what you’ve already got! You could open up a chunk of change, get a start on your next home loan deposit or reduce your monthly repayments, just by sorting out some refinancing. And that’s just one way a mortgage broker could help you along your property journey!

Recent reports indicate that reported cases of influenza in Queensland are close to double those reported at this time in 2015. So now is the time to be vaccinated against influenza. Having a vaccination against influenza not only helps you, but also the broader community. This is due to ‘herd immunity’ theory that proposes that in communicable diseases that are transmitted from individual to individual, chains of infection are likely to be disrupted when large numbers of a population are immune or less susceptible to the disease. In other words, unvaccinated individuals are indirectly protected, by vaccinated individuals. Landsborough chemist has two pharmacist immunisers in the pharmacy and they are available to vaccinate adults aged 18 years and over. They have ample stocks of both the trivalent influenza vaccine and also the quadrivalent vaccine which is the vaccine being used this year as part of the national immunisation program. The national immunisation program provides vaccines free of charge to individuals over the age of 65 years and also to children and at risk groups of the general population. Landsborough chemist is encouraging all members of the population to consider vaccination against influenza, either in the pharmacy or at your doctor’s surgery. They are also able to immunise against other preventable disease including mumps and measles and whooping cough. So call into the pharmacy now or phone on 5494 1744 to discuss vaccinations and make an appointment.

This scene has all the ingredients of a precious memory captured by a mother as her daughter was so intently observing the soldier crabs at Beachmere. The late afternoon lighting on the sand before the tide returned, provided a perfect backdrop for this lone explorer. It was taken on a Nikon D7000, 35 mm lens, f11, 1/250 and adjusted in Lightroom.

Welcome to the cooler months, a perfect time to catch up on all the invigorating walks we’re blessed with here in the Glass House Mountains. This time of year always tends to be a busy one for us in the Information Centre with visitors to the Sunshine Coast taking advantage of the spectacular weather to climb, walk, enjoy the views, relax and rejuvenate. Why not call in and see us and find a new walk to do? During the month of May, many Queensland towns and communities are alive and abuzz with honeybee events and displays. Honeybees are both fascinating and important pollinators to the food we eat every day and our nation’s food security. There are many beekeepers and beekeeping groups throughout the state who are part of activities and events for Honey Month, where they share their wealth of knowledge of the fascinating, clever and essential work of the humble honeybee. Here at the Glass House Mountains Visitor information Centre, we have our own contribution to this event with a presentation from a local bee keeper. This free event will be held on May 25 at 10.00am and is open to all who are interested. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to bev.dooley@ visitsunshinecoast.com and you will even get to taste this local honey. Finally, please note for the first time, an Anzac dawn service will take place at the Cenotaph in the grounds of the Glass House Information Centre. As a mark of respect, the centre will remain closed until 10.30am on this day.

This Saturday night’s film from the Maleny Film Society in the Maleny Community Centre is a recent Cannes winner from Italy entitled 'Mia Madre', 107 minutes, (sub-titled). Multi-award winning Italian director/writer/actor Nanni Moretti has produced an elegant film about family relationships, set against the background of a film set. Highly successful film director Margherita is seen coping on set with a humorously idiotic American actor called Barry Huggins, while coping at home and in hospital with troublesome teenage daughter Livia and dying mother Ada. Adding to her dilemmas is brother Giovanni (played charmingly by Moretti himself). This elegant, well-crafted family drama is built on dilemmas, some humorous, that we can all relate to. Doors open at 6.00pm for dinner catered by Lumbini Nepalese restaurant and film screening at 7.15pm. All welcome. Members of the MFS can pre-book for themselves on line, or for family and friends via the Maleny Information Centre. Drinks bar and tea/coffee stand with homemade slices. In the Garden

Remember your rosemary With ANZAC Day next Monday, you may be looking for a sprig of rosemary to wear at one of the local dawn services or the parades which follow later in the morning. Rosemary is an evergreen shrub and a native of southern Europe, which belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Its scientific name (Rosmarinus officinalis) is derived from Latin and means ‘dew of the sea’ – which most likely refers to the proximity it grows to the coast and the silvery look to the leaves. Since ancient times Rosemary has been believed to have properties which improve the memory. The oil from its crushed leaves and stems was used to treat many disorders and a tea made from the leaves was used to quieten nerves and strengthen memory. The leaves are also used in perfumery and cooking. Perhaps because of the memory association, rosemary became an emblem of remembrance in literature and folklore. As early as 1584, rosemary has been used for remembrance and an emblem for particular occasions such as funerals and weddings or as a decoration for brides dating from 1601. Traditionally, sprigs of rosemary are worn on ANZAC Day and sometimes on Remembrance Day. As it is found growing wild on the Gallipoli peninsula, it has particular significance as a token of remembrance in recalling the memory of the fallen in all theatres of combat. Rosemary is one of the easiest herbs to grow at home. It can easily be struck from a woody cutting, giving you an almost guaranteed result. They can be grown in the ground or in a large pot … just make sure that the soil is free draining as wet feet will be the death of them. Grow them in the hottest part of the yard and they will just love it. Lightly feed twice a year with a general fertiliser. Once a year dust the whole plant and soil with dolomite, as they love their growing conditions to be slightly alkaline. Clipping back the stems to use in cooking will help them bush out and grow healthier stems with more fragrant leaves.

Groundsel Bush season

Groundsel Bush is a Declared Pest Plant and a serious weed problem for small and large landholders alike. It’s flowering at the moment and so to help stop its spread, now is a good time to deal with it. You can foliar spray with an approved herbicide or cut the stem and paint that with a glyphosate product – or if the plant is small enough you may be able to pull or chip them out. Bag and bin – or burn – the flowers so that the fluffy seeds don’t blow and spread after you’ve done your control work. Check www.daff.gov.au for a factsheet on Groundsel Bush.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network

Black She-oak

Plant of the Month

Allocasuarina littoralis Black She-oak is a common and often derided small tree of our local forests, National Parks and road verges. She-oaks have grey furrowed bark with many branched twig like branchlets or ‘needles’. These are not true leaves though these can be seen as minute protrusions at the end of each segment. They can grow to 6 metres but are often smaller when growing in thickets where light levels are low and the ground is covered in shed branchlets. Allocasuarinas have male and female flowers on separate trees. Flowers are tiny and male flowers give the tree a lovely rusty brown appearance while female flowers are red and fluffy. Flowers are followed by woody seed cones which are much favoured by the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo. In nature, these trees often appear untidy and sparse but they can be an attractive addition to the home garden providing a lovely contrast in foliage, and developing a more rounded shape. An added bonus is the possibility of providing food for an endangered species!

Real Estate The advantages of Auction

Auction is well recognised as an effective way of creating wide public interest, maximum publicity and reaching a large number of prospective purchasers. The following points summarise the benefits of selling your home by auction. Best Price - properties marketed using the auction process often achieve prices well in excess of owner’s expectations. There is no upper limit for bids and competitive bidding in an auction atmosphere often enables vendors to achieve a sale price higher than their reserve or what was thought to a fair market price. You control the process - vendors choose where and when they want to sell the property, the terms and conditions of sale and the price they are willing to accept. Convenience - a short but comprehensive marketing campaign means less disruption to family life. Set inspection times for potential buyers are arranged at the outset to offer convenience for you. Maximum exposure - auction campaigns are tailored to enable the property to achieve maximum exposure in the marketplace. The market determines the price - auction is a great method in determining the right value of a property by eliminating the price and letting the market determine what the property is really worth. Auction works to a plan - the marketing strategy is carefully thought out, documented and specifically tailored to the property and a firm date is set for the potential sale. Specified auction date - auction creates a sense of urgency. Reserve price - is set and the property cannot be sold below this price without owner approval. Raine & Horne Beerwah invite you to experience the excitement of a live auction onsite at Unit 10, 2A Swan Street on Saturday, May 7 at 4.30pm.

New found hope

Last week we lost our treasured cat Dolly, and the kids (and us) are devastated. Having rung the local council, visited the pound, knocked on doors and plastered her face all over social media - we have concluded that she is lost, and we are hopelessly lost without her. So I did what any parent in my situation would do... I tried to make it better. After a trip to the local RSPCA, we adopted a playful cat - named Ellie. That night, I was sitting on the edge of the bed - trying to answer my heartbroken seven year old’s questions about Dolly. Why hadn’t Dolly come home? Why did she not love us anymore? After saying a quick prayer for Dolly, she let me know she loved our new cat, and she knew we could never replace Dolly with Ellie. However Ellie has joined our family to comfort us, and that’s okay. Wow! My seven-year-old is so clever!

Mooloolah Mitre 10 hosted a sidewalk sale and free sausage sizzle for residents and shoppers on Saturday, April 9 in the afternoon. The little event was a way for Mitre 10 to thank shoppers for their support. Not only did the locals get to enjoy a free sausage and some great bargains, but also the local Lions club was able to raise some money and get some great exposure for their community projects. This little event is a great example of how local business can be engaged in the community.

To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words.

APRIL 20 2016

Just like Dolly, we too can be lost, feel hurt, lonely or empty inside. When Jesus came, he showed us a different way to live. He never promised our lives would be easy, that we wouldn’t experience heartache or bumps in the road. However, just like Ellie, Jesus came so we would know true comfort when life is hard. Hebrews 6:9 say this ‘We can have this hope, as an anchor for the soul. A hope both firm and secure.’ Today you might feel like we have lost hope, but in God you can all have this New Found Hope.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club

Contributed by Pam Marsden and Carolyn Gamble On Thursday, April 14 - 61 ladies played a Single Stableford event. With dark skies above, it was only a matter of time before the wind whipped up and the heavens opened. Fortunately the inclement conditions did not persevere and we were lucky enough to dry out by the time we finished. The scores for the day were quite low, reflecting the difficult conditions. Our sponsors for the day were Kathy Moffat and Trish Dixon and we thank them for their generosity. It was lovely to see Trish playing for the first time this year. On a very positive note, our three Pennant Teams all recorded strong wins last week. Congratulations girls, let’s hope you can keep up the good work this week! Next Thursday’s event is a 2 Ball Aggregate Stableford, so get a partner and come ready for a fun day. Sponsors for this day are Leith Barnes and Beth Butler, thank you girls. Winners for April 14: Div 1 (0-27) Karen Kemp 35 points and runner Up:- Helen Lewis 33 points on CB Div 2 (28-45) winner:- Julie Mc Mahon 35 points and runner Up:- Carol Fraser 33 points NTP’s - Lesley Eggleston on 2, Joy Banning on 5, Monica Dangerfield on 16 and Helen Lewis 2nd shot on 18. Ball run down went to 29 points. On Saturday, April 16, a Mixed 2 Ball Aggregate Stableford event was held in conjunction with the Men’s event. Sue and Geoff Williamson combined brilliantly with a winning score of 72 points and Runners Up were the Robbies, visitors from the Gold Coast. Saturday April 23 will see us playing Single Par, the competition being sponsored by Jan Sell. Beerwah Ladies welcome new members, beginner players and visitors to join them in their competitions on Thursdays and Saturdays. If you would like some more information, please contact our President Carolyn Gamble on 5438 7779.

Contributed by Craig Bales The AFL Season has kicked off for the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions for 2016. The Under 8’s and Under 9’s participated in the annual season carnival at Northshore on the weekend. Both teams had a great time and were competitive against the other teams. For many of the kids this was their 1st game of AFL and the smile on their faces after the kicked a goal was wonderful. Our Under 11’s played Nambour under lights on Friday and with three players who had never played AFL before the coach wasn’t too sure how the team would go. The Team played wonderfully together and were able to win what was a fantastic game that was played in great spirit by both Teams. The Under 13’s combined Nambour/Glasshouse team had a great win over Caloundra to kick off their season. The Under 15’s combined Nambour/Glasshouse side after a slow start came back into the game and were unlucky not win the game. The Under 17’s girls travelled to Gympie and put in a great effort against a much bigger team and will be better for the experience. Glasshouse is still accepting registrations for all grades for boys and girls. If you are interested in giving AFL a try please contact Craig Bales on 0414 225 329.

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Fair wages An old ranch owner, John, farmed a small ranch in Montana. The Montana Wage and Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his workers and sent an agent out to interview him. "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the agent. "Well," replied old John, "there's my ranch hand who's been with me for three years. I pay him $600.00 a week, plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her

$500.00 a week plus free room and board. Then there's the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10.00 per week, pays his own room and board and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night." "That's the guy I want to talk to, the half-wit," says the agent. "That would be me," replied old rancher John. Ty, Glass House Mountains

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 20/04/2016 TAURUS 21 April – May 23 The full Moon being in Scorpio is opposite your natal sign of Taurus, so there are matters of a secret nature ready for your personal investigation, or self analysis. The best success is by correcting past mistakes. Because Mars is retrograde, your initiatives seem to stall or show signs of weakness. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Can this full Moon bring a climax to the problems you have been dealing with behind the scenes? Well yes, it allows you to reach an understanding or resolution! However, you may not be able to be as much of a free spirit as you would like. Various obligations cut into the time you have with friends. CANCER June 22 – July22 The full Moon in Scorpio is in a good aspect to your sign. However, full Moons always bring on moody and intense times that run with wild desires! If you are prepared to let go, you would be in liberating new times with different associations. They bring transformational changes to you. LEO July 23 – August 22 You are coming to a full Moon in Scorpio for this weekend. This will put an emotional focus on your home and work life. It would be wise to discard any religious interests that do not agree with your own philosophy. There is emphasis on relatives through marriage and so go along with changes.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Under this full Moon weekend a friend may show up with an almost drug-like intensity that throws you off balance or sets up a debate around each other’s unyielding opinions! Recent activities may have aroused inner demons that are trying to force their way out. Make plans for outings. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This weekend under a full Moon vibration this indicates a partnership, or collaboration that plays a key role in your career. Teamwork is important, professionally and personally. There may be contact with a brother or a sister. A conjunction of planets offer a brilliant career breakthrough now. PISCES February 20 – March 20 There is a sudden surprise for you this week as the full Moon in Scorpio acts as a blessing energy to the water sign Pisces. It makes you think about enhancing your services and people want to connect to you through all sorts of avenues. There is a harmonious desire to explore foreign shores! ARIES March 21 – April 20 Well this week, the birthdays of the Arians change over to those of the Taureans. The full Moon is in the first part of Scorpio and it advises you to keep a full rein on your purse strings until you can do a thorough review of your financial situation. Guard against being impulsive and impatient.

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The full Moon puts a nice pressure on your financial affairs. This is because it falls across your exciting travel sector. Apply your thinking to a search, perhaps through Google, and the results and insights can be significant. Some retrograde planets mean you to tread carefully on major plans. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This week sees a powerful emotional thrust under a full Moon to look at your personal values and how important living life to the full really is! Sometimes, listening to others, and what they say, leaves you feeling unsure and disorientated. All this means is to divest yourself of illusions now. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You might find this week to be one of your best and most exciting in the rides with relationships! There is a lot of intensity and passion to your needs and desires under the weekend’s full Moon in Scorpio. There are spontaneous feelings for change under a hot emotional climate. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Creative activities are favoured this week, together with dealings with youthful people in entertainment and recreation activities. As the full Moon is in Scorpio it does suggest that you do not undertake unnecessary risks with funds. It also brings up questions with giving too much.
