JULY 20 2016

Hi Everyone

O

ne of my favourite parts of my job and sometimes one of the hardest parts of my job is receiving letters to the editor. Over the past 11 and ½ years I have received all sorts of comments on all sorts of topics from readers. Some issues are highly contentious and opinion is very much divided such as a universal issue like ‘climate change’ or a local issue such as helicopter joy flights over Glass House Mountains. However this week I think we have finally seen a positive outcome about a very local issue that over quite a long time and plenty of letters to the editor should make a lot of locals very happy – that is the township of Glass House Mountains finally have a set of operational traffic lights! I am hopeful that this outcome may just unite the town and I don’t think too many people would now be unhappy (but I am aware I could be wrong there) and our local member must feel he has got it right – because he is organising a celebration. Yes he is putting the message out to come and celebrate on Saturday, August 13 at 3.00pm at the park in front of the Visitor Information Centre. Please RSVP on 5435 2013 or Glass.House@parliament.qld.gov.au for catering purposes. Looks like it is sausage sizzles all round. Regards,

Local News Local authorities on the lookout for arsonists With bushfire season approaching in Queensland, firefighters are urging residents to keep an eye out for bushfire arson in their local area. Rural Fire Service (RFS) Area Director Gary Seaman said bushfire arson was a matter for the entire community and firefighters needed help from local residents to detect arsonists this bushfire season. “Bushfire arson is a crime and a major threat to all Queenslanders. Every year thousands of acres of land are burned, due to firebugs,” Mr Seaman said. “Deliberately lit fires destroy our farmland and national parks and can threaten homes throughout the Sunshine Coast.” Mr Seaman said all Queenslanders had an important role to play in keeping their community safe from deliberately lit bushfires. “When a fire starts, be alert and take notice of any people loitering around bushland reserves, along with cars or bikes in the area so you can describe what you see to the authorities,” he said. “Write this information down, take photos and report it to emergency services. suspicious behaviour anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, contacting your local police station, or lodging an online information report at www.crimestoppersqld.com.au. “Our message to the community is simple: if you see something or know something, say something.” Mr Seaman said bushfire arson was not tolerated in Queensland and was taken very seriously by police and fire services. “There are heavy penalties for people convicted of arson,” he said. “Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) work closely with the Queensland Police Service and other agencies to investigate bushfire arson.”

Council and NBN to go head to head

Landsborough

The Sunshine Coast Council will take up the fight on behalf of the community over their refusal to approve a Beerwah wireless broadband tower.

Dental Prosthetist PETER J. LANGLOIS REG. (QLD)

In a statement to GC&M News, a council spokesperson confirmed that they will be fighting the appeal which NBN have lodged in the Planning and Environment Court over the rejection of the tower application. “The application for a Fixed Wireless Facility, involving a 30 metre high monopole and headframe unit was refused by council on June 1, 2016 as the proposal conflicts with the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014,” said a council spokesperson. “The applicant, NBN Co Limited, filed an appeal with the Planning and Environment Court against the refusal.

Safer roads for Maleny A number of local Maleny roads will be safer after council erected 50km/hr speed signs last week. For one local resident, Steve Swayne, it has been long overdue in Tallowwood Street and Centenary Drive. “If you regularly drive through Centenary Drive and Tallowwood Street to reach the high school or to and from work, please be considerate of local residents and treat these streets as low speed residential streets,” he wrote on social media. The need for speed signs on Tallowwood Street and Centenary Drive in Maleny was identified during a recent review by Sunshine Coast Council.

“Council subsequently filed an Entry of Appearance with the Planning and Environment Court on July 12. As this is now before the courts, no further comment can be made,” they said. NBN will be represented by respected law firm Clayton Utz, who have been recognised as the ‘Law Firm of the Year in Planning & Environmental Law’. The 10 people who made a submission to the development application process also have the right to be listed as a party and can apply to be heard as part of the appeal process. All 10 made submissions against the tower development. NBN have yet to indicate whether they will be making such appeals against any of the other wireless broadband tower development applications council have refused.

According to a council spokesperson, these roads don’t require speed signs to be installed where there is a default 50km/hr speed limit (built up areas), as is the case with Tallowwood Street and Centenary Drive. “However, motorists often mistake the speed limit on these roads for 60km/hr due to the width and centre line-marking,” said the spokesperson. “Council has also recently undertaken a speed review of Berganns Road in Witta. The speed on this road has been reduced from 80km/h to 70km/h.”

Culprits for Landsborough Bakery charged Detectives have charged a man following investigations into an attempted armed robbery which occurred in Landsborough on June 17. Glass House intersection Progress on the SEQ is green for go plan review Years of agitating from locals has finally paid off, making driving through Glass House Mountains a little bit safer last week. The Department of Transport and Main Roads finally threw the switch and turned on the traffic lights at the Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street intersection. Turning at the intersection – which could sometimes be akin to playing a game of ‘Russian roulette’ – is a much safer proposition, which was echoed by readers on the GC&M News Facebook page last week. “Yesss now it won't feel like we're trying to kill ourselves pulling out onto Steve Irwin Way” … “Fantastic. About time!” … “Now we need lights at matildas” … were just some of the responses from locals to the news. Local State Member Andrew Powell called it a “momentous day for the community in and around Glass House Mountains township.” To mark the occasion, Andrew is holding a celebratory knees-up on Saturday, August 13 at 3.00pm at the park in front of the Visitor Information Centre. Please RSVP to Andrew’s office on 5435 2013 or Glass.House@parliament.qld.gov.au for catering purposes. And with the works continuing at the Bowen Road intersection, it won’t be long before Andrew will have to have another when those traffic lights are up and running too.

Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell is pleased that after many years of delay, we can finally see the review of the SEQ Regional Plan progressing which is wonderful news for many people in Glass House. Last week he said close to 100 families have made contact Greg Williams from Maleny with Wen dy with his office over the years, and Hank de Vries of Montville, talk ing desperately wanting this review to Shadow Minister for Justice and to happen so they can plan for Planning - Ian Walker and member for their future. Glass House Andrew Powell “In an effort to assist people navigate their way through the review process, I invited Ian Walker MP, Shadow Minister for Planning, to the Glass House electorate last Friday and hosted a community forum. “The meeting was well attended by around 50 people who all have an interest in the review and have many ideas to share around how they feel it should proceed,” he said. Topics discussed included the Urban Footprint, growth areas such as Caboolture West, Beerwah East and Halls Creek; the old family subdivision rule and keeping our agricultural land viable and productive; and, potentially allowing councils greater discretion in what can and can’t be approved in terms of development. Mr Walker advised residents wishing to make a submission to do so via email to the Minister for Planning – deputy.premier@ministerial.qld.gov.au with a copy to Mr Powell’s office glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au and also their local Councillor. “If you wish to be included in any updates on the progress of the review, please send an email to my office and we can ensure you are kept in the loop,” he said.

Pollen ‘meta-barcoding’ to give bees a chance A University of the Sunshine Coast PhD student is using cutting-edge genetic analysis in research that could help safeguard native bee populations. Rachele Wilson of Maleny is investigating the foraging patterns of Australian native bees – both wild and managed – by using ‘meta-barcoding’, an extension of a technique used to create unique DNA ‘barcodes’ for plants, which quickly identifies their source. Rachele, who is vice-president of student environmental organisation USC Eco, recently received a $4,000 Rotary Postgraduate Scholarship to assist her research.

BEERWAH DENTURE CLINIC

She has just returned from a trip to the University of Würzburg in Germany, where she worked with colleagues there to develop the project’s metabarcoding techniques. Rachele said she aimed to map the plantpollinator networks of several bee species with their corresponding pollen sources. “Previously, you would have to follow and observe direct interactions between bees and the plants they were visiting, or catch bees and take pollen from them for expert visual identification,” she said. “With this new method of meta-barcoding, we can match entire seasons of pollen from hives and nests to databases of DNA barcodes of all the plants in the area, which is far more efficient. “I’ll be testing a wide variety of native bee species from hives and wild populations located around South East Queensland.” With European honey bee populations in decline internationally, the research could suggest strategies to safeguard pollination in Australia. “By improving our understanding of foraging requirements, we’ll have a better idea of what vegetation types we need to protect,” Ms Wilson said. “Internationally there is emerging evidence of the need to retain both managed and wild bees to prevent a pollination crisis. It will be really helpful for land managers to know what vegetation to conserve or restore to support our native bees.”

Artisan guitar maker wins award By Sonia Clark Gavin Davidson from Glasshouse Guitar Works is an artisan guitar maker and local instrument repair specialist who opened his doors to his new business earlier this year. Already Gavin’s work is getting noticed, from his display stand at this year’s Maleny Wood Expo, to his recent award win for one of his bespoke ‘White Hawk’ hand crafted guitars at the Gympie Wood N Music Festival. Following on from over 25 years in the RV industry in sales and manufacturing roles, Gavin decided to branch out and embrace his passion and curiosity for stringed built instruments. A social guitar player himself, Gavin said he has spent many years exploring the intricacies of stringed instruments and is fascinated by the creative process of fixing and repairing as well as designing and creating them. “Glasshouse Guitar Works is not just my job or business, it is what I love to do! It allows me to move into an area that communicates my creative and expressive side,” he said. Gavin’s initial foray into guitar building started because he could not afford to buy the high quality guitars he wanted to own and play, so he decided to build his own. It was from here that the White Hawk range of wooden guitars evolved. Gavin’s aim is to build a unique beautifully crafted instrument that is fully Australian made by a local craftsperson using Australian timber. “The design of the White Hawk has evolved from

a melting pot of both my experiences repairing guitars and a creative mind,” explains Gavin. “I set out to design an instrument of impeccable quality, play-ability, versatility and beauty. The shape of the White Hawk is unique based on endless hours refining the instrument.” The custom made White Hawk guitars are certainly getting noticed. At the recent Gympie Wood N Music Festival Gavin was stoked to have won first place in the 'open class' instrument building competition with his purpose built instrument - the White Hawk Terror. “The White Hawk is meant to be an instrument of beauty as well as function. Australia boasts some amazing acoustic and instrument suitable timbers. My theory is; when the timber of the instrument is on show for all the world to see, there can be no shortcuts in quality,” said Gavin. Last week I caught up with a couple of our local Rural Fire Brigade’s female members Viki Bliak from Peachester Brigade and Linda Rook from the Glass House Brigade, who are currently in training for the Miss Muddy event late in September this year. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the concept, it's like a scaled back version of ‘Tough Mudder’; it is 5km and incorporates 12 obstacles. They are hoping to expand their team of two called the ‘Firey Femmes’ and encourage other active female members of the Rural Fire Service in the local district to join with them for plenty of fun and a bit of a challenge. I don’t think they would mind me sharing with you that neither of them are in their first flush of youth, but they really enjoy the comradery and support they receive while they are out working

on call outs with their rural fire brigades. However, there are possibly a few elements that they won’t be used to in their work as volunteer firies, including mud and lots it. Two of the event's signature obstacles is the use of foam and colour cannons where participants will hear a big bang followed by a colourful splat in the face. If you’re a female member of a local Rural Fire Brigade and you think you would like to join the ‘Firey Femmes’ please contact Viki by sending a message through to the Peachester Rural Fire Facebook page.

Taste of Brazil comes to Beerwah While the Beerwah CWA may not be able to take you to Rio they have organised a Brazilian Chef Wilson Aguiar to give a new cooking lesson at the August 6 Beerwah Green Tower Market. You will be able to learn the famous Brazilian cheese puff recipe, which is gluten, wheat and yeast free. Tapioca cheese breads or Pão de Queijo are a traditional Brazilian nibble from the region of Minas Gerais. They can be enjoyed for meals or as an appetiser served with wine, beer, or juices along

with dips and sauces or even soup. Different ingredients can be added to the dough in order to gain flavours and colours. The class will take 90 minutes, starting at 9.00am and finishing at 10.30am, inside the Beerwah CWA Hall. The cost is $30.00 per person. Bookings are essential up to August 2 via 0434 081 086 or delightsrio@gmail.com. Students need to bring their own container as there might be some left overs to take home, bring a pen to take notes and wear comfortable clothes.

Visitor Information Centre Update

Concert brings neighbours together

Diamond Valley neighbours and friends were recently treated to a concert surrounded by lit up forest with incredible musicians. This was the biggest event ever to be held in the neighbourhood near Mooloolah. It has been said by some that the energy amongst the locals and memories of such an amazing night will be felt by locals for years to come. Concert organiser, Natasha Odgers, said the vision for the concert was to create something special for the residents of Diamond Valley. “It was wonderful to see so many neighbours of all ages chat, laugh and dance together throughout the night. People were so excited to be there. It was a real celebration of the connected community we have in our local area,” Natasha said.

The concert was special in many ways. People had the privilege of seeing internationally renowned Didgeridoo player and original drummer from Yothu Yindi, Mark Atkins, perform with highly accomplished musicians from Diamond Valley, the Chontia Robinson Trio. Many people danced more than they had in years to the fun funk tunes from Brisbane band, The Pickletones. Support bands, Kalistamon and Karen Law and family, were also impressive with their original songs and musical talent. All looked and sounded better than ever thanks to one of Australia’s best sound and lighting professionals, Wombat Tracks. Mooloolah Valley Lions provided tasty, warming food and raised funds to donate to emergency relief across Glasshouse Country. There were also two new local business ventures, the Tinker Caravan (for hire at events and weddings) and The Village Baker chai and cake stall with chill-out area. Next week GC&M News will bring you more detail on how the event was organised and some tips on how to create your own local event / get together and celebrate living in a connected community.

Exploring the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

The walk up Mount Ngungun is one that most of us have seen from a distance, or been lucky enough to do, and it is probably the most popular of all the Glass House Mountains. There is no doubt, its accessibility and relatively gentle shaded climb, are favourable features. However, Mount Ngungun is still a Class 4 track, this means it is classified as requiring some bushwalking experience. It is suitable for most ages and fitness levels. It is 2.8 km return with walking time of around two hours along some tracks with short steep hill sections, a rough surface and steps. The view from the top is outstanding and takes in the sights of the other Glass House Mountains. Another popular area is the Mount Beerwah day use area for sharing a picnic and taking in the spectacular view of this stunning mountain with the organ pipes. Take the Mt Beerwah road and continue on a short unsealed section (it is a little rough but not too bad) to the day use area. While you are there, contemplate how past climbers climbed with no ropes or special equipment. If you would like more information on any of the Glass House Mountains, call in and have a chat with our friendly volunteer ambassadors. Contact us - If you would like to volunteer at either the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information and Interpretive Centre or the Montville Visitor Information Centre, please contact Bev Dooley (bev.dooley@ visitsunshinecoast.com) or you can call in and pick up an application form.

Outing to Bankfoot House

Contributed by Pauline Clarke Seventeen members of Glass House Country View Club visited Bankfoot House on Wednesday, July 6 for morning tea, a guided tour and a film show. We experienced the brilliant Mary Grigor Centre, an interpretive archival centre, which details the history of Bankfoot House complete with photographs and memorabilia. Bankfoot House is the oldest surviving residence in the Glass House Mountains and was established in 1868 as the lunch stop and staging post for the Cobb & Co coaches on the Brisbane to Gympie goldfields run. Only three families ever lived in Bankfoot House and the last owner, Jack Ferris, died in 2002 at the ripe old age of 109. We were escorted by tour guide Ron who was an absolute font of knowledge and whose stories made everything come to life. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped on the day and who made the visit so enjoyable. Glass House Country View Club always welcomes new members; just turn up to one of our meetings or outings. View Clubs throughout Australia have 17,000 members and are a part of the Smith Family. We support Smith Family activities and in the Glass House club we pay particular attention to the Learning for Life program. We are only a small club but we already provide financial support to four under privileged children to assist in their education from primary through to tertiary schooling.

Another successful year for Maleny QCWA

A winning team

Business feature Craig Hilder and his family are based on the Gold Coast, and in the case of this reseller, it was actually Craig’s wife Lea who initially rang up the team at Transportable Shade Sheds. While many of the small business owners have been men – the financial and family related benefits of becoming a reseller of the Australian owned and manufactured product also appeal to women. Craig and Lea were already familiar with the quality and durability of the shade sheds having bought one 10 years ago. Impressed with the excellence of the product and looking to purchase another shed, Lea rang up the company. Through the course of the initial conversation she realised the potential business opportunities available if they became resellers. With a husband who regularly worked away, becoming a reseller and having Craig at home more was an engaging option. Both Lea and Craig were keen to embrace this business opportunity to potentially provide a viable income while allowing for more time at home – which would benefit the entire family. Craig has been in mining for over 20 years in a specialised position that required regular work away from home. Both he and Lea realised that their three kids were growing up fast and that they only had a few more years to enjoy being together as a family at home. Motivated by the chance to spend more time with the family and the financial potential, the opportunity to work closer to home proved extremely appealing. Becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller is a decision that can provide great team opportunities for families to work together and use their various skills to contribute to the success of the business. In addition to the skill sets that a husband and wife team can draw upon to make their business work, the Transportable Shade Shed products are backed by extensive online business marketing and mentorship support through the value added Saver6.com cloud based platform. The ongoing collaboration between Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com can assist them with their online promotion and digital presence across a number of digital platforms including eBay, gumtree and Facebook, website creation and marketing material. Craig became a reseller around the Gold Coast area at the beginning of the year establishing ‘South East Portable Shades and Sheds’. Manufactured to last with a 10-year structural warranty, Craig sees the potential in industrial and acreage sales for the multi-use product, as well as for car and boat coverage which is popular throughout the Gold Coast. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Gold Coast and surrounding areas contact him via social media or on 0400 550 224. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area, or are keen to be your own boss or look at a business option that may allow more time at home with your family, then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

The Maleny CWA held their annual AGM recently which was well attended by a range of other local community groups and visiting CWA members, including representatives from both the Peachester and Beerwah CWA Branches. The past year the branch has been kept busy. They estimate they would have contributed in excess of 4361 volunteer hours, with much work undertaken catering for regular and one-off events which contributed to the $15,000.00 they raised in funds. Throughout the year the group donated funds to a range of other community organisations including over $1,000.00 to the Maleny C&K Kindergarten, $1,000.00 for the Public Rural Crisis Fund, $500.00 for the Melanoma Appeal, $500.00 to Blackall Range Care, $300.00 to the Maleny Rural Fire Service, and $200.00 to the Qld Cancer Council. The new committee were sworn in, with Judy Stubbs as President, Sara Faddi as Vice, Treasurer Terry Rowan, Secretary Suzanne Nugent and Joanne Myers as International Officer. As this year’s International Year of Study was Greenland, the ladies made sure they included some Greenland style treats as part of the afternoon tea; next year the country of study will be Nepal. QCWA Maleny Branch hold their monthly meeting at 9.30am on the first Friday of the month at 1 Bicentenary Lane, Maleny. The next meeting is on Friday, August 5. President Judy Stubbs describes the branch as a friendly group of ladies of all ages who meet for friendship, and to help the community in a wide variety of ways. All are welcome to attend. You can contact Judy to find out more on 5435 8140.

Fresh quality meat … delivered to your door Since taking over Beerwah Meats three months ago, new owners Jason and Kirrily feel they have been welcomed into the community. The new Glasshouse locals, who moved here from Dubbo in NSW for a lifestyle change, are enjoying the mountains and also the warmer winter weather. Jason brings with him over 20 years experience as a butcher, teamed with Kirrily who has several years experience in food retail and offering outstanding customer service. After listening to their customers they have kept many of the Beerwah Meats favourites, but tweaked them slightly with their own spin. With the current cooking shows inspiring customers to try new things, they are happy to source what you are looking for, or prepare the meat to your request. There are even recipe ideas in store to tempt your tastebuds. “By branching out with our suppliers we have

also been able to consistently reduce the prices on several items, while offering even better quality,” said Jason. “While we aim to continue offering this evolving service for our retail side of operations, we are now expanding it to include our wholesale production too. We welcome discussions with local businesses looking to source the best quality meat at competitive prices.” The other side of Beerwah Meats is their online service ‘Meats on the Moo've’. For those of you who have trouble getting to the shops – such as the elderly or house bound – or those who prefer to shop online at a time that suits you … ideal for shift workers or even when the kids are asleep! … this is the perfect solution. Offering free delivery, on orders over $50, to the entire Glasshouse Country and Maleny readership area, you are guaranteed the same quality as shopping in-store, with the convenience of

delivery direct to your door. Visit the website at www.meatsonthemoove.com.au to view what’s on offer.

Contributed by Neil Glover At Glasshouse Country Men's Shed, we are a mixed bunch of fellas who often have reason to admire the work produced by individual members. Then, out of the blue, something special turns up. David Hight, previously a member of the Redcliffe Men's Shed, arrived at our Shed with his delightful boat ' The Lollipop' and was immediately the centre of attention. This little beauty is of clinker design, using carefully selected timber and hundreds of brass rivets skilfully inserted by hand. The boat has been painstakingly and attractively finished in every detail. The workmanship was praised by our Woodwork Group members. The idea was conceived by the birth of a new grandchild. The Lollipop, suspended from a hemp rope cradle would respond comfortingly whenever the baby moved. David says that they have never seen such a happy baby. David and his wife are currently looking around for a permanent home in the district. Don't forget, if you or someone you know, can benefit from joining the Glasshouse Country Men's Shed, please call Bob on 0427 606 240. You are also welcome to simply drop in any Wednesday morning for a guided tour of the Shed.

Beerwah Writers Group

Contributed by John Wright At our early July meeting, the group discussed the publication of the next edition of our Magazine ‘Five Minute Tales’, and Ceridwyn confirmed the reconfiguration of our website. Writing activity was centred on, but not restricted to, two topics – ‘Cheating’ or ‘Absent Friends’. The presentations were surprising and covered a diverse range of concepts and approaches including but not limited to John B’s serious story of the financial manipulations and dubious methods that caused the GFC. As well as Paul’s fictional account of the effects of cheating in the public school system, Susan’s eloquent description of cheating within a marriage and Maureen writings ‘Deceased – Two Females’ – an historical account of the ravages of TB and poor nutrition in the 1880’s – a dramatic description. There are still a few places for new members. Annual membership is $5.00. For more information telephone Paul Stevens 5438 7910 or go to our website beerwahwriters.com Our next meeting is at 10.00am on Friday, July 22 at Beerwah Library.

School News Onto the bus to Out of the Box Festival Contributed by Sally Joyce Out of the Box is an under 8’s children’s festival held biannually at Brisbane’s Southbank. It is an action packed week of theatre, art, workshops and other creative cultural activities.

Angus, Dante, Tully and Jake dwarfed by a very large painting at GoMA

On Wednesday, June 22, 56 students and 36 parents and grandparents travelled from Peachester State School to Brisbane for a day at Out of the Box festival. Participation in the Out of the Box festival started some months back for Peachester State School when a representative from Out of the Box came to the school to run a lantern making workshop. The children saw their very own drawings produced into lanterns, hanging in the foyer of the State Library of QLD. Most children were able to identify ‘their’ lantern. What a thrill! The highlight of the day was visiting QPAC’s lyric theatre to see Creature. This performance was an adaptation of the story of Dot and the Kangaroo and involved story telling through aerial acrobatics, singing and an amazing interactive and beautiful digital backdrop that bought the Australian Bush and its animals alive. A wonderful experience of live theatre for the children! Year 1 and 2 students attended a fabulous puppet making workshop and all students had time to participate in the many free activities including art activities at GoMa, the GONG Garden, Rangoli weaving, sitting in an outdoor kids drive-in and passing through the Queensland Museum and so much more. A massive thank you to our teachers Margie Jennings, Carol Newitt, Jane Robertson, Lyn Rayner, and Leone Owen who always put a lot of effort into making sure that Peachester Kids get to Out of the Box each year it is on. We all had a ball.

Glenview Junior Dance Troupe wins

Students from Glenview Independent Public School Junior Dance Troupe recently participated in the Sunshine Plaza’s Breakthru School Music and Dance Competition, achieving second place overall. This competition showcased the dance, instrumental and singing talent from primary and high schools across the coast. The Troupe performed to the song ‘Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot’ in a routine choreographed by teacher Ms Osborne. The dance troupe consisted of nine dancers ranging in age from six to eight years. The girls’ amazing costumes were designed and sewn by Glenview teacher aide Ms Lee McCrae. It was a wonderful achievement for the Troupe and the girls were ecstatic with their performance and their win. The Troupe was also invited to perform at the Noosa Festival Carnivale themed street fiesta which was held on Friday, July 15 in Hastings Street.

Primary school visits The treasures of yesteryear at Bankfoot House are again delighting our local school students as they walk in the footsteps of three generations of the Grigor, Burgess and Ferris families. Guided by the Friends of Bankfoot House, our recent visitors included descendants of the Grigor and Ferris families. One girl told us that her grandfather had stayed at the house in earlier days when it offered traveller accommodation. Comments from the children are littered with gems that equally delight the volunteers. The 1905 Smiths typewriter always attracts

attention and comparisons are made with today’s computer keyboards; likewise the wall telephone with its windup handle and the absence of a number pad. One young lad said his grandmother had a telephone exactly the same and could we please ring her up on our phone and let her know. The 1930 Pianola invariably raises questions in the minds of those who try to understand how music can be produced from holes in paper. The protruding leg rests of a squatter’s chair caused one boy to ask, “why did they have such long arms in those days?”

In response to questioning by the guides, creative explanations of how various objects were used show how different our world is now. When asked how water might have been heated when there was no electricity, one boy suggested leaving it out in the sun during summer. The volunteers always look forward to the lively tours with the inquisitive youngsters. One of our young visitors was heard to remark, “I thought we were going to visit a museum but this is really fun!” What better commendation could you ask for? Interested in learning more about Bankfoot House? Contact the Friends of Bankfoot House on 5493 0197 on a Wednesday or email friends@bankfoothouse.org. Strength in diversity If you like sharing your backyard with wildlife like I do, then diversity of plants and resources is key to the diversity of wildlife you’ll see and share your backyard with. Your plantings should include as much diversity of species, form and shape as you can squeeze in. Nectar producing flowers such as Grevillea and Melaleuca spp. provide food for birds, possums, bees, butterflies and a host of other insects. Fruit can feed a whole range of fauna (unfortunately even your fruit trees!). In particular, in our region we need all the small fruits shrubs and trees such as Mutton Wood (Myrsine variabilis), Velvet Leaf (Callicarpa pedunculata), Bleeding Heart (Homalanthus populifolius), Silky Myrtle (Decaspermum humile), Dotted Myrtle (Gossia punctata) and many more Myrtles, these can attract Pidgeon’s, Bower Birds, Lewins Honey Eater and potentially all those birds and mammals that thrive around forest edges. Insects eating your plants could be looked upon as detrimental, but the insects in turn provide a protein boost to many birds. The more diversity of plant types from grasses, herbs and small shrubs, through to vines and trees provides habitat niches for an even richer range of fauna. Nest boxes, piles of rocks and logs, frog ponds and bird baths add even more to the mix. Planning and planting habitat for your garden not only enriches our local ecosystems, it enriches your life too.

Environment Highly commended

Cr Baberowski, Cr McKay and Moreton Bay Cr Koliana Winchester with BMT WBM Philip Haines

The Pumicestone Passage is an internationally important wetland renowned as a haven for significant species of fish, dugong, turtles, mammals and migratory birds. However, this has all come under threat in recent years with results showing its rich, healthy ecosystem has declined. Sunshine Coast Council, Moreton Bay Council and 30 other community, industry and government stakeholder groups, have stepped in to protect and enhance this beautiful, iconic passage and its diverse catchment – and their collective efforts

have been rewarded. Environmental Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council was honoured to have received a special highly commended award for the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan 2013-2016 at the prestigious Healthy Waterways Awards on the weekend. “While we are absolutely delighted to have been a finalist in the awards, and to have received a special note of recognition and commendation, the most important factor is that our collective efforts are actually making a difference in protecting and enhancing the health of the passage and catchment,” Cr McKay said. “After learning about its declining health, we knew that significant intervention was needed to save this precious waterway and the many wildlife species that call it home. “The Pumicestone Catchment Network is united with the joint objective of saving the Pumicestone Passage – this meant putting our heads together to plan and pooling our resources together to act,” Cr Baberowski said. “Over three years we have worked together on a wide range of actions to improve water quality and wildlife habitats and increase community and industry stewardship. Right now we are preparing our plan for the next three years and are very excited to continue this work with all our partners – building on our momentum and making a positive difference for our Pumicestone Passage and catchment.”

with Ann McGrath In this busy world in which we live, privacy is important, whether it be neighbours, traffic or just an unsightly view that we would rather not see. There are choices. Not everyone can or wants to live on acreage and surround themselves with natural bushland. So, if we don’t want to just let the world in, we must build fences, or plant hedges and screens that can range from 30 centimetres to 30 metres. Fences are instant but the birds and other wildlife don’t find them that appealing, so let’s plant! The problem with planting is that it takes time for the plants to grow and they often have a mind of their own and don’t grow as we want. Unfortunately, square plants with beautiful flowers are not yet available; although I’m sure someone is working on it. If you enjoy a well ordered garden and have the time to spend weeding, trimming and pruning then a hedge will suit you well. There are a range of native species of varying heights that respond well to pruning. If you, on the other hand, have no desire whatsoever to even own pruning shears then throw caution to the wind and think living screens. One of the outstanding things about our bush is the variety in colour, shape and texture of the foliage. This can be incorporated into screens of any height. Time spent on initial research into plant height and width and soil requirements will save time on the development and maintenance of the screen. Over time, plants may need to be removed or added, gaps may need to be filled and dead branches may need to be removed, but the rewards will come with the ever changing nature of the screen and the wildlife who will love you for it.

Good on you kids

We are being conned!

Last week we had the wonderful experience of being visited by a very popular former ‘Family Feud’ contestant Patricia Gundrum. Many of you might remember her as Denise from the Beerwah Post Office’s 91-year-old mother, who was visiting her daughter and son-in-law from her home on the Queensland / NSW border. She was a real hit on the popular television show as she danced with Grant Denyer and cheekily told him she liked dancing with him because she could look up into his eyes. Patricia is a very proud mum to 10, grandmother to 21 and great grandmother to 23 so no doubt she has plenty of experience with young children. She wanted to share with us a story about some of her industrious great grandchildren. During the school holidays, Baylee, Chloe and Indee (who go to Beerwah Primary School) along with one of their cousins from outside the area (and a handful of great grandchildren) spent time at their grandmother’s house. They picked all the grapefruit and oranges off their grandma’s trees, made it into juice and then set up a stall to sell the juice, to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital. Patricia reckons that the whole experience for them was very educational, and she wanted to congratulate them on their efforts to do something that was about benefiting others. Their hard work paid off as these industrious kids raised almost $50.00 to donate to the BOQ ‘Banking on our kid’s program’ which raises funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia. When Patricia left our office she was in a hurry to get to Bingo at Club Glasshouse – she said if she did well she might just top up the donation herself.

The promoter of the proposed motorbike race in Maleny says that he is copying the format of the Isle of Man race, which has four classes as well. According to the notice of road closures for the 2016 TT races on the Isle of Man race (which I have a copy of) the roads there are closed for four days for racing plus extra days if postponed by weather, plus six days for practise which seems to have not been publicised, thus it will affect us for about two weeks including getting ready and dismantling. This is much longer than previously indicated. John Malings Maleny

Strange twists in the NBN path

Since February 2015 an attempt to obtain information from Sunshine Coast Council under the Right to Information process, about their dealings with NBN, resulted in an initial provision of 41 pages of documents. (With deletions by NBN from 14 of these documents, they looked like a wartime censor had a field day). Following an appeal for an external review to the State’s Office of the Information Commissioner in July 2015, the council has now released, on 22 June 2016, an additional 248 pages that look like swiss cheese. On 67 of these pages, councils’ preparedness to release the information was vetoed and overridden by NBN’s ‘tell them nothing transparency’. It is an ongoing saga… However, one document that stands out is an advertisement dated 21 February 2013 which announced NBN’s plans for fixed wireless service in the Sunshine Coast local government area (SCC). This listed 20 areas to receive this microwave service. These included the nearby sites of Hunchy, Kenilworth and Mapleton. NBN then stated that: ‘Other areas of the Sunshine Coast local government area would receive either fibre or satellite services...’ It is now known that NBN did not fully explain its plans to the people in this statement. NBN says that it will meet all the Planning and Regulatory requirements of the Sunshine Coast Council for its applications. It is now known that NBN has not done this either. SCC should be congratulated for its stand to require their Planning Scheme to be followed for NBN’s applications. Now NBN wants to challenge the SCC in Court for council’s stance on behalf of their communities. NBN seeks approval for its proposal which denies the local people their health

and amenity contained in the Council’s Planning Scheme. It would also impact on local scenic amenity near one of the Glasshouse Mountains. These communities seek the NBN services as described in the 21 February advertisement – fibre or satellite. Towerless NBN for Maleny and Hinterland please. Jim Straker Maleny

Thanks for the support

The Rotary Club of Maleny would like to thank our community for its support and generosity during the 2015-16 year. Due to the fantastic community support of our major fundraising activities, the Maleny Show Food Stall, parking donations at the Real Food Festival and the Maleny Wood Expo, and the very popular Rotary Calendar, the Club was able to donate over $44,000 to the community. Over 80% of this money goes to local charities, clubs and organisations. The Rotary Club members had a busy but enjoyable year and we are very proud of what we achieved. For anyone interested in joining us we meet for dinner on the first and third Wednesday each month at the Maleny Hotel. Which method of selling your home is right for you? In the March Quarter of 2016, 92 per cent of Aussies who sold made a capital gain on their house, according to CoreLogic RP Data. So if you’re considering selling, it’s imperative that you know exactly what you’re doing to ensure you are amongst the 92 per cent, and not the unfortunate eight. Knowing the methods of sale and identifying which one is suitable for you is the first step to selling for more, reducing the size of your home loan and giving you valuable wiggle room with your finances. Putting your home at the mercy of the auctioneers gavel can net you great results. Auction This is a form of sale where your home is put up for public auction and the highest bidder enters into a contract with you to

www.gcnews.com.au

buy your property. Auction is a great method if you want to sell quickly, as it creates a sense of urgency. Making it likely your home will be bought – potentially for more than you expected as buyers compete to make the best offer. CoreLogic data confirms this as the nationwide clearance rate for auctions during the past three years have generally sat above 60 per cent. Despite the many benefits, Auctions may not be the best option when there is clear and accurate public information on sales of similar properties in the area. Particularly common occurrence with apartments or units. In these situations buyers will likely limit their highest bids to the historic sale prices of surrounding properties, meaning a private sale treaty or tender might be a smarter option.

92 per cent of Aussies who sold made a capital gain on their property. Private sale or tender The process of Tendering your property involves advertising it for sale, before receiving offers privately – usually via sealed envelope, and either accepting the most suitable one or rejecting them all. Private sale involves connecting with one buyer and entering into further negotiations with them directly to try and achieve the best deal possible. These are excellent options for homeowners who have plenty of time to sell and want more control over the process. There is also a chance that someone will make an uncommonly high offer due to the fact that buyers are not made aware of the value of other offers made on the property.

After you sell, you’ll need to arrange a home loan – it’s best to seek out a licensed Australian mortgage broker in order to ensure you get a suitable loan package complete with low interest rates and favourable repayment terms.

Strength Training Course for older people

Mapleton Gym are offering an information session about the ‘Lift for Life’ Program to be held onsite at the gym on Thursday, July 28 at 10.30am. The program is a strength training course for older people and those with (or at risk of) developing Type 2 Diabetes and other chronic conditions. For the past 20 years, research has supported the idea that high intensity strength training for older people and people with chronic illness including Type 2 Diabetes and Dementia is extremely beneficial. High intensity strength training is having people lift weights at least 80-90% of their capacity and continuing to increase these weights and challenging their bodies. It has shown to reduce Type 2 Diabetes, increase mental and cognitive health as well as increase bone density and reduce muscle loss as people age. Mapleton Gym is a community run gym and is unique as it caters for people as they get older.

They have recently received funding from the Queensland Government’s Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing, under their Get Going Clubs program, to assist in running the ‘Lift for Life’ program. For more information about the course please call Tina McLaren on 0490 024 367 or Paul Parker on 0439 670 629 or drop into the gym.

Living - History Centenary of the Beerburrum Soldier Settlement

Readers may be interested to know that 2016 marks the centenary of the establishment of the first soldier settlement in Australia. From 1916 - 1929 approximately 600 soldiers or related family members settled in the area which was known as the ‘Beerburrum Soldier Settlement’ covering land from Glass House Mountains to Elimbah and out to Bribie Passage. Through the ‘Adopt a Digger’ legacy project, a very special exhibition and community event to commemorate the founding of this settlement, will be held at the Beerburrum School of Arts on Sunday, November 6. ‘Adopt a Digger’ is an ongoing project that focuses on the stories and history of Sunshine Coast men and women involved in the First World War. The centenary exhibition is being coordinated by Paul Sutton who has been involved with ‘Adopt a Digger’ for the last four years and is a published author on Military History. When he joined the project there was very little documented about

With an idea to try to capture more about the trials and tribulations of the people involved in the settlement, Paul and a core group of interested community members and researchers approached the State Archives in Brisbane. Looking to initially discover a list of individual names of those involved in the Settlement they searched government lease files and then created a ‘Positive ID’ by correlating the information with history, this will be an event not to be missed. service records of military rank and deployment. Outspoken presents Tim Winton Tim Winton is one of the Australia’s most acclaimed writers, thinkers and essayists. He is the author of 28 books and three plays. His nonfiction has appeared in many of the most prestigious magazines around the world. Not surprisingly Steve Lang is proud to be able to have him come to Maleny to be a part of his on-going Outspoken Program. If you would like to be a part of the audience for ‘A conversation with Tim Winton’ on Monday, October 3, 5.45pm for 6.30pm at the Maleny Primary School Hall get your tickets booked quickly to avoid disappointment. In the remarkable true stories of ‘The Boy Behind the Curtain’, Tim Winton reveals an intimate and rare view of his imagination at work and play. In 'The Boy Behind the Curtain' Winton reflects on the accidents, traumatic and serendipitous, that have influenced his view of life and fuelled his distinctive artistic vision. On the unexpected links between car crashes and religious faith, between surfing and writing, and how going to the wrong movie at the age of eight opened him up to a life of the imagination. And in essays on class, fundamentalism, asylum seekers, guns and the natural world he reveals not only the incidents and concerns that have made him the much-loved writer he is, but some of what unites the life and the work. Tickets are $18.00, and $12.00 for students. Bookings are essential at the Maleny Bookshop, 2/41 Maple Street, Maleny phone 5494 3666.

Have a blooming marvellous time at wildflower festival In late winter and spring the Sunshine Coast’s wildflowers burst forth in a stunning array of sizes, shapes and colours. You are invited to explore these natural beauties blossoming all across our region as part of the Sunshine Coast Wildflower Festival from August 21 – September 3. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Council had partnered with a number of local community groups to offer a range of free activities celebrating wildflowers including 16 guided walks in areas between Bribie Island and Noosa. “Here on the Sunshine Coast, we have a number of examples of wallum heathland, making this one of the few places in the world to experience this sensory display on such a scale, however the proximity to the ocean has always been a challenge to this ecosystem. “This highlights the importance of understanding our local environment and making well-informed planning and management decisions that protect our natural environment into the future.” For a copy of the full festival program and to book, visit council’s website. Places are limited and bookings are essential.

In the Garden with Brownie

Jade will be missed

Regular readers will be wondering what’s happened to Jade King’s regular monthly vegetable gardening column … ‘Get Up and Grow, with Jade’. Unfortunately for all of us, Jade had to call time on her column due to too many things competing for her time. Her school teaching (she runs the agriculture department at Glasshouse Christian College), her sustainable living farm in Beerwah (called Green Valley Agriculture … look it up on Facebook) with its menagerie of animals and amazing range of crops, her family of hubby and three growing kids, her work as an agronomist at Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Coop, and probably 101 other bits and bobs she puts her hand up for. Since February 2009 we’ve been lucky to have Jade write down her thoughts, knowledge, experience, trials, errors and successes and allow us to publish them on the gardening page. Her passion for organic and sustainable gardening is renowned and her attention to detail sometimes borders on fanatic … some may even say neurotic. I would pop in to say hello and she’d grab out her diary where she notes everything that she does in the garden … and I mean everything. Every little detail is recorded, every little trial and variation is noted, every bed is drawn, the plants are diarised, seasonal, watering and nutritional aberrations factored in. But it is this attention to detail, coupled with Jade’s scientific curiosity and drive to understand how to make things work even when they shouldn’t; it is this passion that shone through in her monthly communiqué with the readers. And for this, both Lea and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts (or compost heaps). We wish you well and we know that our readers are better gardeners because of you.

Native Lasiandra

Plant of the Month

Melastoma malabathricum This beautiful native species is often confused with the exotic Tibouchina because the flowers are very similar. However, while the exotic species is generally known by the deep purple colour, native Lasiandra is usually a lovely pink/mauve colour. Melastoma occurs as an open shrub usually to two metres, growing in moist eucalypt forests, along stream banks or fringes of rainforests. The shrub stems are slightly rough and hairy, as are the attractively veined leaves which are paler on the underside. The beautiful five or six petalled flowers brighten the bush at any time of the year. They are followed by edible fruit with purple pulp which was popular with Aborigines as bush tucker. Since the fruit stains the mouth, the plant is also commonly known as ‘blue tongue’. Melastoma flowers produce quantities of pollen, making them attractive to native bees and butterflies.

Your Comeback

It is that time of year again, seven months into 2016, where we have crossed the threshold and are sitting on the other side. Not to alarm anyone, but it is only 22 weeks til’ Christmas! The inevitable conversation ensues; “where did the year go?” The answer seems to be almost unanimous, “I have no idea?” I am sure I’m not alone in saying that I had many goals and aspirations for this year, most I haven’t met yet. When the year commenced I believed I could change the odds, and achieve anything. As the months passed, those dreams began to fade under the weight of everyday life and distractions, and the insecurity of an uncertain future began to set in. Will I ever achieve [insert goal here]? Gravity has this uncanny ability to keep your feet firmly on the ground even when it comes to

dreaming. Thanks for that Isaac Newton… what goes up, must come down right? But, what if you believed ‘I can’ rather than ‘I can’t’? Preaching not to your problems, but choosing to preach to your vision (dreams). What if you finally looked through the forest and saw the trees? Philippians 4:13 ‘I can do all this through him who gives me strength.’ What would happen if you couldn't fail? If your success or failure didn’t rely on your finances, time, location, age, knowledge and ability. What would you do? These are the dream stealers, which cause you to doubt yourself, give-up or not even want to try in the first place. So grab yourself some dream builders who will encourage you and support you when the going gets tough. Don't be afraid to try, you can comeback. Romans 8:31 So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? Today you might be looking to finish that course, get into shape or find a better job. 2016 is not over yet. I challenge whoever is reading, You Can Do It. The Time Is Now. This GCNEWS Add sept 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM Is Your Comeback! C

Sport Beerwah Ladies Golf

Contributed by Carolyn Gamble and Pam Marsden On Thursday, July 14, 50 ladies participated in the Foursomes Championship event over 27 holes. The Foursomes Championship is an honour board event and therefore significant in our golfing calendar. Sponsors for the day were Beerwah Jewellers and Cosmetics Plus and we appreciate their generous support. The gross winners over the 27 holes were Karen Kemp and Sonia Kenway with a very creditable 136. Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone were runners-up with an equally creditable 137. Nett winners were Julie McMahon and Teresa Keast with 112 3/4. Vicki Bartel and Sue Greentree were nett runners-up with 117 1/4. Jo Malone and Lyn Nichols had the best 18 hole nett with 76 and Barb Whitfield and Diana Smith won the last 9 holes nett with 36 3/4. Congratulations to the winners and to all who participated. NTPs were won by Barb Whitfield

Witta Tennis and Diana Smith on 5, Pam Marsden and Libby Gemmell on 16, and Karen Kemp and Sonia Kenway on 18. Sonia and Karen also won NTP on 23. Ball rundown went to 121. Not all ladies played in the 27 hole Foursomes Competition. An 18 hole Individual Stableford was played in conjunction and was won by Joy Plowright with 34 points. Marie Oxlade came second on a count back with 34 also. NTPs for this event were won by Janelle Balfe on 5 and Joy Plowright for her second shot on 18. Gail Gundry and Janelle Balfe received ball vouchers in the rundown. The Individual Stableford was generously sponsored by Glasshouse Mountains Country Meats. We are looking forward to our Invitation Day on Tuesday, August 2. The ladies welcome visitors as well as new members or beginning players. Happy golfing.

Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails played their first game of the Spring 2016 season at Maleny and secured a win against Maleny M&Ms. An enjoyable day and a good start to the season. Thank you to Gerry, Janet, Pauline and Sonia. Wildcats: no results - as their game was washed out. The Whistlers had our first match in this season at Witta against Caloundra Raquettes. Between rain showers we managed to play all the sets and had a good win. Score was 48-16 games, 8-0 sets. The team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Brenda Warner and Maree Hooley. Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm, all welcome. For court bookings phone 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au

Maleny Bowls Club

Foursomes Champions are Vicki Bartel, Sonia Kenway, Karen Kemp, Teresa Keast, Julie McMahon, Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone

Contributed by Ian Hansen The usual Bowls Competitions were only played on Tuesday last week because of the State of Origin Rugby League Wednesday and the inclement weather Friday. Tuesday’s winners with 2 Wins +15 were Margaret Ginns and Allan Cook. The jackpot wasn’t won so increases for this week. A couple of hardy souls in Miles Allen and Allan Cook tried to play in the drizzle and fog Friday but wisely decided to give it away after 7 ends. Only one championship match was played during the week resulting in a win for Warwick Moody and Allan Cook over Miles Allen and David Burgess. Warwick and Allan will now play Jim King and Don Ginns in the Final of the Men’s Pairs. This week, weather permitting, there will be Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, the first round of the Men’s Triples Wednesday afternoon, The Twilight Challenge Wednesday evening, Scroungers Friday, the Singles Semi-finals during the week and more championship Matches Saturday. Finally, don’t forget the Monthly Jackpot Pairs Monday, July 25.

Glasshouse Bowls Club

Contributed by Dave Hayes Sunday, July 10: Our 2016 Men’s Singles Club Champion Dean Shaw represented our club over at Bribie Island in the Singles ‘Champions of Champions’. In his first game he got up 25-19. In the semi he was unlucky to go down by 1 shot, 25-24. Wednesday, July 13: Ladies Jackpot, Dave Clarke, Viv James and Ron Wilson def Graham Meyers, Doug Loveday and Ann White 2411. Chris Freshwater, David Hayes and Brian Saunders def John McSwain, Phyllis Aitken and John Aitken 30-8. Millie Freshwater, Rae Farrell and Wendy Platt def Lyn Griffiths, Russell Walmsley and Brian Larkin 27-11. Dennis Hume, Jack Timm and Di Hume def Di Garland, Jimmy Tatum and Rob Scullion 30-13. Lee Meyers, Chris Dougan and Warren Blackbourne def Noelle Dean, Doug Sweedman and Joy Reason 19-17. Winners of the day with most ends won was Brian Saunder's team with 16. Runners up were Di Hume’s team with 15. Jackpot for +21 did not go off, so next month it will be up to $330. oo. Thursday, July 14: 6 rinks of bowls were played. The winners of the day with two wins and 48 points were Dean Shaw and Bill Tumbridge. Runners up with 20 points in the second game were Clive Sinton and Kevin Beasley. Lucky Draw went to Simon Richter and Kerry Molloy. Round 3 of our pennant season was played last weekend. The 2nd Division team were away to Solander Lakes. Super Strawberry Report

It was another slow week in Round 3 of the 2016 Super Strawberry Competition, with only two entries. However congratulations to John Allen’s Oaklands Farms who won the round with an entry weighing 104 grams. John receives the weekly prize sponsored by Beerwah Hotel. Thanks to Judy Blackford who brought in an entry in the ‘most unusual’ category. No news on its likeness to anything recognisable, but a spokesman from the Co-op reported “we have an entry in the ugly strawberry class” – perhaps no more need to be said! Readers may be interested in a few historical facts. Starting in 1996, the Super Strawberry

home to Beachmere but due to the bad weather the game had to be cancelled Please Note: Saturday, July 30, 9.00am we will be holding a meeting at Club Glasshouse to consider what Bowls Competitions we will be entering in for 2017. I strongly suggest you all turn up to voice your opinion. As of October 1, next year’s bowls memberships will be open to pay. This year the new fee will be $85.00. You have until end of December to pay. Our Annual General meeting will be held on September, 3. We need more members to start helping out on our board. We have the bowlers, but without a board there is no club. If you can offer any assistance or have any office skills or spare time we would like to hear from you. We also need more umpires. If you think you may be interested please approach the board for more details. On Sunday, August 7 our club is hosting the next Police Bowls Day, the Iona Challenge. This day is sponsored by Terry and Liz Little and there will be up to $400.00 in prizes. I encourage all members to come along for a game. The cost is only $12.00 and includes hot nibbles after the game. Put your name on the sheet in our bowls shed office. Be at our club by 12.30pm for a 1.00pm start. Hope to see you all there. Glasshouse will be hosting the Champions of Champions Men’s Fours on Sunday, July 24 and 31. Our club will be represented with our game to be played at 1.00pm on July 24. I encourage all members to come down and show their support. There will be no Sunday coaching on these dates due to this competition.

Competition has produced some remarkable results over the years. In 1997 the winning entry, grown by Cameron and Mary Lister, weighed 240 grams. And the all time champion was Shane Frizzo’s 2006 winner at 245 grams! So growers and pickers, can anyone beat that record in 2016? Round 4 is open this week, closing on Friday, July 22. Bring entries to the Coochin Creek Co-op any time during the week, but no later than 4.00pm Friday.

Just for Laughs Wise words

In court after a road accident in the country: Lawyer: "At the scene of the accident, Mr O'Brien, did you tell the officer that you had never felt better in your life?" O'Brien: "That's right, sir." Lawyer: "Well then, Mr O'Brien, how is it that you are now claiming you were seriously injured when my client's car hit your cart?" O'Brien: "When the officer arrived, he went over to my horse, who had a broken leg, and shot him. Then he went over to Darcy, my dog, who was badly hurt, and shot him. When he asked me how I felt, I just thought under the circumstances, it was a wise choice of words to say I've never felt better in my life."

Farm life

George the farmer, had so many children that he ran out of names. So he started calling his kids after something around his farm. It was the first day of school and the teacher asked each child their name. When he got to one of the farmer George's sons, the boy replied, "Wagon Wheel." The teacher said, "I need your real name boy" the lad replied, "it's Wagon Wheel, sir....really." The teacher, rather annoyed said "all right young man, take yourself right down to the Principal's office this minute." The youngster got out of his chair, turned to his sister and said, "C'mon, Chicken Feed, he ain't gonna believe you, either." Submitted by Sarah, Glass House Mountains

CANCER June 22 – July 22 Having the full Moon this week in the sign of Capricorn accentuates your place in the driver’s seat. There is a chance to strengthen a faltering relationship or maintain stability in your job in the wake of destructive changes. Pursue a conservative course regarding your expenses. You are in the mood to wander around this weekend. LEO July 23 – August 22 This full Moon, being in the sign of Capricorn which often produces a grounded and steady approach to life, might require you to complete unfinished business on a pending project. Try not to burn the candle at both ends now, and co-operation is essential if you wish to build a secure, reliable, long term relationship now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The Capricorn full Moon this week favours you with determination and resilience. This means you can make solid improvements all week. If you are feeling hemmed in by work or other concerns, it will be reassuring to know that you can count on background support. The next four weeks lines up an exciting vacation! LIBRA September 23 – October 22 With the full Moon in Capricorn this week, it puts an emotional pressure with some urgency, relative to your home or career. You feel caught in the middle. PISCES February 20 – March 20 A Capricorn full Moon this week sits in the sector of amusing thinking and reminiscing. Consider well that there are many advantages to be gained by doing things in concert with others. The next fortnight will be a time to pamper and renew yourself. Don’t give in to any temptations that undermines your diet or health now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The full Moon in Capricorn starts today for the week ahead. It puts the full pressure on recent emotional frustrations, probably about your security and worldly ambitions. See if you can work well with a lovable and reliable partner, bringing confidence and support to new ideas. A creative idea embraces a brand new direction. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 What a full Moon week this will make for you, bringing outstanding relationships with others, especially contacts that are connected to higher educational pursuits. This is the time to realise that no values can surpass the love and loyalty of your family and associates. Focus on your foundations over the weekend ahead. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This full Moon week is across your financial sector and hopefully culminates a recent economic thread in your life. Around midnight old plans are discarded and new plans are going to count on somebody reliable that can apply to a business alliance. Unions started now have a tendency to last. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The key to success and happiness this week will be in harmonious teamwork, under the full Moon sign of Capricorn. Therefore, if buying furnishings, choose from a combination of beauty and durability. Solid timber settings will favour you. Some close relationships with family have complications which are hard to fathom now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This full Moon in Capricorn brings emotional money issues to an urgent crisis. You will have a smart idea around the midnight time this week, under a Capricorn full Moon. As the week progresses, your fiscal credibility improves. The weekend sees you entering a sunny month and smiling again under a bright Leo energy. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 There is a sense that stability and strong foundations in the past are being shaken by others emotional earthquakes. However, you can rebuild on solid ground. Avoid situations that will have any potential to be sticky financially. Wait 24 hours before divulging personal information. You need time to consider potential risks. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This week opens up for you to provide the stability you need in a relationship or business partnership. A commitment made this week will thrive long term. That is the energy that this Capricorn full Moon period brings to you. See if you can get past a partner’s negative thinking as the weekend opens a month of vitalising interaction.
