Hi Everyone
L
ast week was ‘National Volunteers Week’ a time to recognise the important contribution that volunteers make to our community. In my job I have contact with so many not-for-profit / community groups that every day I see first-hand just how many things happen locally because of the efforts of those that provide their time, energy and skills to assist in a huge range of activities. We are fortunate to have so many people who are passionate volunteers and each year at this time the State Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell's office, organises a morning tea to thank and recognise individual volunteers who have been nominated for a ‘special job well-done’ by the group they are involved in. It is always great to see how proud the recipients are of having their work acknowledged. I am pretty sure most volunteers aren’t looking for recognition – but from those of us who benefit from their efforts I would like to say on behalf of our whole community – your work is appreciated. Regards,

Local News Difficult night for the judges By Lea Parkes
While the Maleny Show Dance held last Saturday night was a lovely night out for the guests, it was a little more stressful for the entrants in the Show Girl and Show Princess. Before the Dance got underway, they were put through their paces having to be interviewed by a panel of judges as well as going on-stage later, in front of the whole crowd to answer more questions. However when the State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell spoke on behalf of the judges – he made it clear that it was definitely the judges who had the toughest gig on the night choosing a clear winner. Stacey Bentley who is a full-time university student at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and who works part-time the Landsborough Post Office, raised over $4000.00 and won the Charity Category, and she also was winner of the Rural Ambassador Category. Miss Showgirl winner was Caitlin Powter from Beerwah who works at Australia Zoo and was nominated by Maximise Health and Fitness of Beerwah. The runner up was Georgia Ridge from Witta who is currently studying fashion design in Brisbane.

The winners will go on to represent the Maleny Show Society at the next level of the competition to be held at Woodford next month. Keep a look out for the girls at this year’s show; they probably won’t be wearing their ball gowns however they will be the girls wearing the sashes.

Club President Dimi Young said that the club will be using the funds to put towards a number of projects, the main one being resurfacing three of the netball courts. Two of the courts were last resurfaced about 10 years ago and the other one was built eight years ago and also requires a resurface.
Work will also be undertaken on drainage to help prevent the courts from flooding and becoming unsafe to play on, and awnings will be installed on the clubhouse to prevent water from entering during rain. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell said the next funding round has now opened and applications need to be in by midnight on May 31. “I encourage all local groups, however big or small, to apply for the next round of funding and make the most of this wonderful opportunity,” he said.

As part of this year’s activities the local community came together in Tesh Park (in front of the library) at Maleny last Thursday to show their support for the importance of raising awareness of the devastating effects that Domestic and Family violence can create. Karen Shore from Sunshine Coast Outreach Prevention and Education (SCOPE) shared with the groups the horrifying statistics about domestic and family violence, and the devastating impact it can have on individuals, families and the broader community. This year the Maleny community have been on hand to support a local family who suffered the loss of a family member at the hands of his former partner. So many locals have seen up close the sadness of coping with this situation and the challenges for the family to overcome. To date this year in Australia there have been 34 lives lost as a result of domestic and family violence. This message was incorporated in a commemorative ceremony in the park through an installation that included the same number of crosses and pairs of shoes. A walk aptly named ‘one step at a time’ was then led from Tesh Park up Maple Street, with participants singing, and drums beating while the crosses and shoes were carried with them. The event ended with a community lunch at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

Don’t worry … bee happy Well known Beerburrum locals Ann and Jeff Ross (from Beerburrum Service Centre) are so passionate about keeping bees, that they’ve reinvented the bee hive and started a business called Hive Haven to market their success. Ann said that their beekeeping obsession started when a honey bee swarm took up residence in the wall of their workshop back in 2012. “We were told to just spray them, but we just couldn’t do that to the bees, so we encouraged them into a traditional bee hive box and kept them in the backyard … and it just grew from there. “So really, the bees found us,” Ann said. And they’ve been in partnership (Ann, Jeff and their bees) ever since. “Both honeybees and stingless native bees are at serious risk from major problems such as heat stress, spore-based diseases and pests, such as small hive beetle,” said Ann. “Jeff is a great problem solver and spent many hours testing one prototype after the other. What started as a bottom board trap to control small hive beetle quickly grew into a complete hive assembly addressing the heat issue, spore-based disease and Varroa Mite as well,” she explained. Last year, Jeff and Ann (a business student at the University of Sunshine Coast and part of the University’s entrepreneurial program) – won the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast’s annual Business Pitch competition. The University has been integral to advancing Ann and Jeff’s ideas and has provided extensive support, including the development of prototypes using the 3D printer at their Engage Lab.

Ann and Jeff Ross with their Hive Haven honey With the designs for honey bee and native stingless bee hives established and preliminary testing done, Ann and Jeff now need to step up their research to the next level. To enable this, they have launched a crowdfunding program to fund their novel solution to our plummeting honeybee and native bee populations. Crowdfunding is the concept of small contributions being pledged by many people. In return, the funders receive a pledge reward. Hive Haven, is looking for support to purchase a 3D printer, fund much-needed research and to kick-start small-scale production of their innovative bee hive boxes. From now until June 29, they are looking to raise $11,000. You can contribute by heading to their website (www.hivehaven.com.au) or Facebook page (HiveHaven) and follow the links to the special crowdfunding webpage. Launching the crowdfunding campaign, Ann said, “It’s a really exciting time for us, and vital for the bees that we get our boxes installed as far and wide as we can. We just can’t live without them.”

Photography Corner
with the U3A Grafx Group Contributed by Esma Rigby
By Bev Dooley
Life-Giving-Water At U3A Beerwah Grafx the members are encouraged to submit images for a Show and Tell session each month. There is a different topic each month, and the one for March was ‘Water’. I had been interested in the changing shape of the flow of water from the kitchen tap. The background was a cushion propped up on the draining board. The camera was supported by the edge of the sink. It was taken with a Nikon D5100 with a shutter speed of 1/60 sec, F/5.6, and ISO 2500. The flash was fired reflecting its light on the tap. Early morning light from the window opposite the tap also reflected on the front of the tap ensuring its three dimensionality. The water sparkled as it reflected the light from both sources. Very little post processing was required.
The Early Bird There is no doubt that early morning photography allows a quality of light which soon disappears the higher the sun gets. The softness of the light pervades this scene with the red of the clouds reflected in the rocks at Point Cartwright. A slow shutter speed produced the smoothness of the water spray. Nikon Df 28mm lens, 1/8 second at f13. It was well worth the effort as it was voted Picture of the Month. Congratulations to Ian Ferguson.

It’s been a marvellous month at the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information Centre. Our volunteer ambassadors had a get together barbecue at Ewen Maddock Dam on a calm and clear morning. This is something we organise every three months or so as part of our training and familiarisation of the region. We try to organise these get togethers at different spots to get out and about and familiar with our key landmarks and attractions. As part of celebrating National Volunteer Week (May 11-17), we are proud to have three local volunteers nominated and recognised at MP Andrew Powell’s ceremony. Desrae Woolley from Montville, and Rob Morris and Jeff Bodley from the Glasshouse Centre will each receive an award, and well deserved too as all three have completed 20 years of service to the community. And finally, I hope you all survived the recent storm, we had a number of volunteers who helped out, some who stayed at other volunteers homes. It’s quite incredible we stayed open, which proved to be very much needed for people displaced by the storm trying to get home. If you would like to join our team and volunteer some time, why not come in and have a chat?

Peachester Mother’s Day High Tea Contributed by Andrea Balcombe P&C The Peachester State Primary School P&C fundraising committee truly outdid themselves the Friday before Mother’s Day. The front lawn of the school was festooned with femininity celebrating mums, young, old, and soon to be. The ladies worked tirelessly in the lead up and on the day organising a Mother’s Day Gift stall. Each child was able to buy something special to take home for their mums, grandmas or carers. The stall raised $823.80, a
huge thanks to the businesses for their support: IGA, Amcal Chemist, Beerwah Flowers and Gifts, Beerwah Patchwork, the Co-Op, Landsborough Chemist, Chemist Warehouse Caloundra, Coles Kawana, Beerwah Jewellers, Demi International Beauticians, Katrinas Beauty and Australia Country Living Gifts - Morayfield. A glorious High Tea was set up with sweet and savoury delights all contributed by the clever and oh so talented school mums. All 35 ladies who attended the event were astounded by the quality of food, presentation, decorations and attention to detail. The High Tea and associated raffle raised $755.00, bringing in over $1,500 for the day’s effort. Special thanks must go to the entire fundraising committee and particularly Fiona Gray and Carrie Shaw for the lengths they went to creating a truly special event for mum's on their special day.
A-MAY-zing mutts – A-MAY-zing adoption prices In May only, over 30 of the Sippy Creek Animal Refuge Gold Star Dogs are available to adopt for $79.00 - $99.00 from Saturday, May 23 to Sunday, May 31. There are no hidden costs with these dogs. Most of them even come with a free training session to help settle them into your lifestyle. These dogs have earned their gold star and have been at the refuge for over two months. When you adopt a dog from SCARS, they are all desexed, vaccinated, micro chipped, and vet checked, which saves the new owner a significant amount. Refuge Manager, Penny Brischke said they’re also offering training sessions for adopted dogs to provide the best chance of pets and their owners enjoying their time together.
“We are an independent, not-for-profit charity caring for up to 70 dogs and 70 cats at any one time and save 1,000 cats and dogs every year. “SCARS relies heavily on government grants and the community to keep operating,” she said. “The charity spends at least $600.00 to rehome each animal – and that’s just the healthy ones. “We rely on community donations to care for these cats and dogs that may have been abandoned, surrendered or found wandering the streets. You can help by donating to the Sippy Creek Animal Refuge Society at any Westpac Bank (BSB 034 229 Account Number 100574). For more information visit www.sippycreek.com.au. The Twinnies with a rescued juvenile Gannet
Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue update
The crew at Twinnies Pelican and Seabird rescue have had a really busy month already with the rescue of eight Australasian Gannets along with a number of other birds in need, such as juvenile Cormorants and Shearwaters (also known as Mutton Birds). This is a labour of love for the Powers family and volunteers are always needed to assist in the work. The team are always happy to make a time to show people around and actively encourage people to volunteer to help support this service which also includes all hours wildlife rescue callouts as well as providing an around the clock drop off centre open to the public for injured wildlife. The Twinnies have recently had students from the University of Queensland helping out and learning more about the day to day running of the facility. Practical donations are always gratefully accepted with fish, grain, parrot food, plants and garden chairs particularly useful at present. The facility relies on community support and goodwill, and the Twinnies thank all those who have helped already to keep this vital service going as well as all those who are considering helping out. If you would like to volunteer or to find out more, contact 0421 476 561 or check out their Facebook page/ Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue. Their rescue centre is located at 2147 Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough.

Depending on the turnout, the movies will be chosen from Jandamarra’s War (rated M), Lurujarri Dreaming (rated G), Big Name No Blanket (rated M), Tales from the Daly River (rated PG) Croker Island Exodus (rated PG) and Mabo (Rated PG). A sausage sizzle will be available for $5.00 and drinks, chips and popcorn will be available for purchase. Weather permitting, the movies may be shown on the big blow up outdoor screen, so throw in a blanket and cushions to sit on. Bookings are essential and more details can be found on their Facebook page – Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business. This not-for-profit organisation has been running for over 20 years and is staffed entirely by volunteers. They always welcome more support from any interested community member. Nungeena is located on a 16 acre property adjacent to Mt Beerwah National Park and the land has particular spiritual and cultural significance because of its location to Mt Beerwah, the mother mountain of the Glass House Mountains group. For more details on the movie nights contact Rhea or Judd on 5438 7747. Nungeena is located at 60 Streek Road, Glass House Mountains. Phone 5496 9766.
Clothes swap success
Contributed by Helen Wilkinson The Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre had a fantastic day on Saturday, May 2 for our annual clothes swap event though the weather was trying to bring us down just days before. We would like to thank our local community and volunteers for making the day a huge success considering there where road closures due to flooding on the day, we still had over 50 people attend the clothes swap with a volunteering staff of 13 including the lovely ladies at Glasshouse Early Education Centre who offered free child minding on the day. Going through clothes can be tiring we know, so we also created a chill zone where people could sit and relax, even grab a cuppa for a small
donation. As we are a not-for-profit organisation with no government funding we rely a lot on sponsorship and in conjunction with the clothes swap we also held a Mother’s Day raffle that was drawn on the day. Winners were 1st prize N.Collie – pamper package, 2nd prize E. Moses - money tree and 3rd prize A. Porter - scented candles. We would love to say a big thank you to Auscare Pharmacy, Matilda Fruit Barn and Flame On Candles for their generous donation of prizes. Due to the clothes swap becoming so popular the centre is considering holding another one later in the year. Any feedback is most welcome and remember you can find us on Facebook.
Beerwah Kindy Obstacle-a-thon Contributed by Katie Piva (Co-director/Teacher) The children and families at Beerwah Kindergarten thoroughly enjoyed their annual Obstacle-a-thon recently. The children had been practising to complete 10 laps of a challenging obstacle course. The weather was perfect for both groups and an energetic and fun morning was enjoyed by all. It was great to have so many parents, grandparents and other family members stay to help and cheer the children on as they finished their laps. We were very pleased to be able to use some of the new outdoor equipment that we purchased with the donation from The Beerwah Hotel Social Club. Beerwah Kindy is so fortunate to have such wonderful family and
community support. We were very proud of the children as they received their certificates for ‘an outstanding performance’.

The business owners of Elimbah Village recently held an Open Day to showcase the variety of retail shops and services on offer in this beautiful village precinct. The idea to hold the event was initiated by Julie and Coreena from Health Concepts, and there was a good local turnout on the day. The organisers were really pleased to see so many happy local people, and it was a great way to raise awareness in the community of what the shops in Elimbah Village had to offer. Health Concepts, Crystal Faerie, Donna Bees Candles and Elimbah General Store and Takeaway all had crowd pleasing promotions on the day. The Open Day also featured a popular raffle, and pre loved retro clothing, books and accessories, art and homewares were available for sale. Julie Stower and Coreena Taylor from Health Concepts Checking up on blood pressure Free blood pressure checks were held at pharmacies across the area recently in conjunction with a project for the Stroke Foundation. The aim of the free blood pressure checks was to make people more aware of their blood pressure levels. One in three people in Australia suffer from high blood pressure which has been shown to be a contributing factor in strokes.

You Said It A warning for others
On Monday evening May 11, my car got broken into while I was in a meeting at the Beerwah Library. They took my wallet and phone, and created a big mess in my car with the glass etc. I just wanted to let readers know to be careful, and not to leave anything in your car at all. Unfortunately my fully comprehensive insurance doesn’t cover items stolen from my car. I wasn’t aware there are no CCTV cameras at the car park, and the lighting is quite poor. It’s the first time in Beerwah I’ve not felt safe. If you have any information, please contact the Beerwah Police. Name supplied, Beerwah
Very happy winner
A very special thank you to Beerwah - Peachester Women's Auxiliary for making my Mother’s Day such a happy occasion. I was the lucky winner of their Mother’s Day raffle and a wonderful surprise package was delivered to my home by two charming lady members! I was expecting friends, who arrived and joined in the fun of looking at all the exciting contents of my bumper parcel, a laundry basket full and more, just like children with stockings on Christmas morning! It was certainly a unique experience for me, in my 80's, and the first raffle I have ever won! Thank you again to all who contributed, you certainly made one elderly winner very happy indeed! Best wishes to all. Mary Cameron Mount Mellum

Be kinder to each other
The town of Beerwah has been transformed and looks great and the tree lined street looks wonderful. But sadly the people are still the same, divided. Today we hear about kids bullying other kids, but where do they learn this behaviour? Well from the adults around them. Maybe it is time to take a good look at yourselves, your parents, grandparents and still after many years of doing the same thing, that hasn’t made an ounce of difference. People go to a lot of trouble to make things divided, even within the businesses in Beerwah. You can sense the conflict between those in Peachester Road, Simpson Street, and Turner Street. I have noticed that while some new businesses open and do well, there are those that struggle; you would all do better to support each other. Why don’t the businesses work together more? With the number of empty shops around, and so much competition of the same type of business, I am surprised that we are getting another coffee shop in the new shopping centre. Sadly I was even told by one business that she was intimidated out of Beerwah by bullies. But now she couldn’t be happier as she's in a much better place, so you’re the miserable losers and you don’t own this town. I will go about my life minding my own business, wearing what I like, (which is basically bought in local businesses), while you hide behind your sunnies, or anything you’re wearing, that’s your problem, not mine. I am a really nice person as well as being nice to others which is important, especially for the knock on effect that this can have.
Sadly you bullies think you’re entitled, you’re not and you are the bigger losers for it, as the world you are making is full of ‘your kind’ of people. Your examples have done nothing but make more bullies. So for the bullies out there, go read the bible, go to church and think about the world you’re making and destroying, for your children and grandchildren’s future. There are some good people around here, ones that aren’t talking and whispering, or hiding, sadly just too few of them. I am proud of myself for never contributing to bulling or bullies and never will. I wish you all well although you may love nothing, please try and make a better world for everyone. Be sincerely nicer to one another. Name supplied Beerwah
Prized geranium walked
Thank you to GC&M News for putting a free notice of my sale of plants. Unfortunately I am afraid it did not have the desired effect, I sold a few plants in the morning, but none after lunch, leaving the money tins and notices along with the empty tin. I went inside to have lunch where I could keep my eye on the gate. I must have dosed off and missed seeing my prize geranium marching off with their beautiful flowers blowing in the wind. Wasn’t it good job I had emptied the money out or that would have gone with them too? The amount of plants which ‘walked’ was worth more than I took in the day and will not be much help to medical research. Nessie Pratten Glass House Mountains

Bowen Street lights meet mixed reaction Following on from last week’s story (GC&M News May 13, page 6) about new traffic lights being announced by the State Government for the Bowen Road and Steve Irwin Way intersection at Glass House Mountains, we asked our Facebook followers what they thought … and here are some of their responses. “We do right hand turns off Bowen Rd into Steve Irwin Way frequently and don't find it would warrant traffic lights. As well, having lights at both Bowen and Reed a couple of 100m apart is going to annoy and frustrate a lot of people. Yes I know that there has been a recent fatality at Bowen but if we had lights at every fatality intersection we would slowly grind to a snail’s pace.” – Cliff Schnick. “What about Forestry Rd Landsborough? It’s way more dangerous than Bowen. We have had so many accidents there it’s not funny. We were told there were lights going in years ago but they put them in down the road at Hardwood which did need them.” – Coralie Ebdon. “If people simply obeyed the traffic rules there wouldn't be a problem.” – Mike O’Dea. “About bloody time!” – Jane Kindleysides.
“I live off Bowen Road and turn right almost every time I go out, I have 2 children working at Australia Zoo both with different start times on weekends so this is 4 right turns a day on the weekend alone. During the week there is regularly trucks parked in the bus stop which block visibility to the south making an already bad intersection dangerous.” – Roz Bannan. “Put lights in take the speed up to 100 again or 90.” – James Winzar. “Round about would be good.” – Sian Frost. “Turn when it is safe to do so. It's that simple. You have 500 metres left and right to see what's coming. Steve Irwin way will be the new Nicklin Way. An extra 10 minutes commute to work now.” – Trent Glister. “Needed!!!!!!!! Especially at Glass House version of 'peak hour' leaving for work of a morning ... It will save a lot of frustration and potential accidents!” – Feona Udy.
It seems there is a mixed reaction to the announcement from locals. Have your say – let us know by sending a letter to the editor.

Crystal are sacred gifts and medicine from the Earth. They have been utilised for thousands of years as healing medicine and spiritual awakening tools by indigenous and tribal people around the globe. Each variety of crystal has a unique internal structure, which causes it to resonate at a certain frequency. It is this resonance that is said to give crystals their healing abilities. Applying this resonance in a coherent way can help to restore stability and balance to the body’s energy systems, stimulating the body's natural healing mechanisms. Crystal therapy is a gentle non-invasive form of alternative healing that works holistically to harmonise the mind, body, emotions and spirit, helping to increase our feeling of well-being, neutralise negativity, lift depression and to help us to become integrated, whole beings. Spinal Health Week 2015 runs from May 25 to 31 and this year the chiropractors at Adjust to Life Chiropractic are encouraging you to 'Get Your
Happy Back'. "Every day more and more Australians experience disabling lower back pain, neck pain and headaches, limiting their ability to work and engage in an active healthy life," said chiropractor Braxton Turnage. One explanation for this is the negative impact on increasingly sedentary lifestyle has on postural fitness. Think about all the hours you spend each day sitting at work or school, commuting, on your computer or other mobile device and watching television. "Poor posture increases pressure on your spine which can cause lower back pain, neck pain, headaches and fatigue" Dr Braxton said. If you suffer from back pain, neck pain or headaches or if poor postural fitness is impacting on your ability to live life to the fullest, visit a chiropractor at Adjust to Life Chiropractic During Spinal Health Week 2015 make an appointment at Adjust to Life Chiropractic for a spinal health check-up and discover what steps you can take to improve your health and wellbeing and Get Your Happy Back. You can also visit www.spinalhealthweek.com.au to learn more about chiropractic care and Spinal Health Week 2015.

Visitors welcomed The Friends of Bankfoot House were thrilled to welcome descendants of William and Mary Grigor to the house recently. Jim Fraser of New Zealand and John Fraser of Brisbane are descended from William and Mary’s eldest daughter Janet, who married John Fraser (Senior) in 1888. Janet and John Fraser (Senior) raised three sons, but the family was struck by tragedy when the two older sons, William and John (Junior), died in France in World War 1. A memorial to the brothers still stands in the Yandina Cemetery – it includes a broken column, a poignant symbol of two lives cut short. The family lived at Cooloolabin near Yandina where they kept dairy cattle and grew sugar cane, arrowroot, bananas, pineapples and oranges. The youngest Fraser son, James Fenwick Fraser, was born in 1900. His middle name, Fenwick, was the maiden name of his grandmother, Mary Grigor. He married Ellen Ann Stevenson. Our visitors Jim and John Fraser are the sons of James and Ellen. A daughter, Helen, passed away in 2013. Jim and John were accompanied by their wives, Dianne and Anna Fraser, and their niece, Anne King. The Frasers have previously visited Bankfoot House, the family home of their great grandparents, William and Mary Grigor, but this
time they were able to see the newly completed Interpretive Centre and Archival Store which will be officially opened by Mayor Mark Jamieson on June 3. This new building also includes a workroom for the Friends, a large open space for tour groups and seminars, equipment storerooms, toilets and a kitchen. The original Grigor and Fraser families would, we feel sure, be astounded and delighted with the legacy they have left both their descendants and the broader Glass House Mountains community.

The past week has seen a number of Federal Government announcements and I wanted to share the initiatives that may benefit you this year. Job seekers - From October 1, 2015 eligible job seekers will be able to volunteer to undertake work experience in businesses for up to 25 hours per week for four weeks while continuing to receive their income support payment. Employers who go on to offer a young person paid employment can receive a wage subsidy of up $6,500 over 12 months. Small businesses - Effective immediately small businesses with a turnover below $2 million can claim an immediate tax deduction for every asset they acquire that is valued up to $20,000 for tax purposes. From July 1, 2015 the government will cut the company tax rate for incorporated businesses with annual turnover up to $2 million by 1.5 percentage points to 28.5 per cent. From July 1, 2015 the government will provide a 5 % tax discount for sole traders, trusts and partnerships that are unincorporated with an annual turnover up to $2 million, capped at $1,000 through their end of year tax return. New businesses - Start-ups will be able to immediately deduct professional expenses incurred when they begin a business rather than writing them off over five years. The government will remove obstacles to crowd-sourced equity funding to help promote small business access to finance by increasing the availability of innovative sources of funding. From July 1, expanded tax concessions for Employee Share Schemes will make it easier for small start-up companies to attract and retain the skills and talent they need to grow. Roads Funding - Funding for the Roads to Recovery programme will double to $4.8 million for 2015/16. This will allow council to undertake road construction and street repairs based on local need. Tourism - The Sunshine Coast Airport and Townsville airport will share in $26.2 million over four years to establish ongoing border clearance services to enable regular international travel. For more information on these initiatives visit www. budget.gov.au or call my office on 5493 5556.
Rain damage in Glass House
The rain that hit on Friday, May 1 took most of us by surprise, especially many households and businesses at Palmwoods, Maleny and Glass House Mountains, however it was the areas of Caboolture, Wamuran and Elimbah that were the worst hit. I pay tribute to the Elimbah family that lost their lives in this rain event and wish their family all the very best in their healing. On a positive note, there were many shining lights that emerged in this tragedy - so many people that helped those people stranded by this intense storm. I have visited several home owners and businesses following this event to survey some of the damage they sustained. There is no question they were hit hard and we need to do what we can to assist in their repairs. I have undertaken to appeal to the Minister for Agriculture to recognise that businesses like Peter Young’s strawberry farm in Glass House Mountains who were severely impacted by this rain event and need assistance so they can continue to trade. Please contact my office on 5435 2013 if you would like any further information.
Maleny-Kenilworth Road Walk
I’m dusting off my walking boots in time for the annual Great Walk from Little Yabba Creek to Maleny this Friday, May 22. The main reason I make this journey every year is to highlight the need for upgrades to MalenyKenilworth Road. A few years ago we also decided to encourage community members to join the walk and use it to raise much-needed funds for the Chaplains from Maleny and Conondale State Schools. The walk kicks off from Little Yabba Creek at 6.00am with a barbecue at Conondale around 9.00am and then another one at Tesch Park in Maleny from 3.00pm - if you are interested in joining me for all or part of the journey please call the office. If anyone would be willing to make a donation to the Chappies please email my office – glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au

Fighting Cancer
I was reading a document sent to me from Cancer Council Queensland, outlining the number of people currently suffering from cancer and those who lose the battle each year. In the document Cancer Council states, 3,190 people on the Sunshine Coast are diagnosed with cancer each year and ‘tragically around 982 people will die from the disease’. Today, 11,143 people on the Coast, are living with cancer, after a diagnosis. Once again, I am hosting Caloundra’s Biggest Morning Tea to help raise awareness of cancer and to raise funds for Cancer Council to continue delivering their programs and support services to doctors and cancer patients. A friend of mine shared with me the story of her grandmother, whom she simply called ‘grandma’ who had passed from lung cancer in 2006. She told me she was a loving grandmother, devoted to her family. My friend was very close to her and it had been a tough time during the last few months she had with her grandmother. She said it wasn’t long before the cancer had spread. She said she remembered only leaving the hospital room for no more than 10 minutes on her grandmothers last day that she had passed. She described how sad and strange it felt that her life had to move on without her grandma. She passed away on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2006 at 72 years of age. It can be hard when someone close to you loses the battle to cancer. Our fundraising certainly won’t cure cancer, yet whatever we do will help the fight. The details for the event are: Date: Friday, June 12. Time: 9.00am – 11.00am. Venue: 1 Nutley Street, CCSA Hall, Caloundra. RSVP: Wednesday, June 9. I would love to see you all there.

The 'Frackman' Movie is coming to Maleny There will be a special one-time screening of the film 'Frackman', on Sunday, May 31 at 4.00pm at the Maleny Community Centre. Tickets will be $15.00. Unlike a traditional movie showing, the Tugg screening requires that 50 tickets be reserved in advance in order for the screening to occur. You do not pay until the day, but you do reserve tickets via a card number. To reserve tickets, visit the Tugg Event page:- http://www.tugg.com/ events/20601. 'Frackman' is an observational documentary following ordinary Queenslanders caught up in a modern day multinational ‘gas rush’ to secure and exploit coal seam gas - (http://frackmanthemovie.com/ ). Accidental activist Dayne 'Frackman' Pratzky is building a simple home when the Queensland Gas Company arrives, demanding to sink gas wells on his property. The company claims that legally he has no right to refuse them access. So begins his transformation from knockabout pig-shooter to passionate activist, and a David and Goliath battle against a $70 billion industry. The filmmakers have followed his five-year battle that includes triumphs and tragedies, love and conflict and reveals the shocking treatment of landholders by some of the most powerful companies in the world. Missing the judging on ‘MKR?’ By Sonia Clark Have you ever fancied yourself as a good judge of cooking? Know what looks and tastes good? Now that the finals of ‘My Kitchen Rules’ have been aired don’t suffer withdrawals. If you feel you have what it takes to pick a winning entry, then why not be a part of the ‘Novice Cookery Judging Competition’ on Friday, May 29 at this year’s Maleny Show? The competition has been running for the last few years and has proved a great crowd pleaser as well as an informative and fun way to learn about what’s involved in show cookery judging. Under the expert guidance of the main Maleny Show cookery judge, you can try your hand at judging taste, feel, cut, smell and overall presentation. The competition is free, and you can just turn up on the morning to enter. All entrants will be issued a scoring card where they can judge the unmarked entries from the categories of biscuits, cake, jam and slices. If you have a bit of a sweet tooth, this is a great way to sample some homemade delicious goodies! The expert judge will give pointers throughout the novice judging and entrants will be encouraged to give the reasons why they chose a particular winner. The novice judge or judges, who scores closest to the professional judge, will win a fantastic prize of cooking supplies. The competition is open to everyone junior or senior and kicks off at 10.00am in the Main Pavillion. In the Garden with Brownie
Gardens for butterflies I enjoyed your article on deciduous trees. I was wondering if anyone can identify the deciduous tree on Maleny Street, Landsborough, on the nature strip outside the Seventh day Adventist Church? Every year it is beautiful as it changes colour. Gwyneth Evans, Maleny
Thanks Gwyneth. The tree is a variety of Chinese Tallow. It is a lovely autumn coloured tree for our region, as it consistently turns beautiful colours even in milder winters. The one in Landsborough is a pretty good example of how they grow – not too high, nice open spread and attractive bark. There has been some suggestion that they are naturalising and becoming bushland weeds in northern NSW, but I’ve yet to see any evidence of that happening in this area. One downside is that the sap is a skin irritant (they are part of the Euphorbia group).
Soils - Mulches - Gravels Sands - Potting mix
Who out there doesn’t like seeing a butterfly in the garden? Apart from the odd white cabbage moth, it’s a truly wonderful sight to have butterflies of all colours and sizes dancing on the breeze through your garden on a warm autumn day. Everyone’s garden – no matter how big or small – is visited by butterflies from time to time. So if you would like them to visit more often and maybe stay for a longer time, you have to make them feel welcome. Butterflies aren’t just visually impressive – they perform a vital function in the garden and the environment as a whole. It’s not hard to create a butterfly garden. By providing suitable foliage food plants for caterpillars, and suitable nectar food plants and water for adults, you can make your garden butterfly friendly. For many native butterflies native plants are the best, but there are many exotics that fulfil the role as food plants, especially for adult butterflies. There are many varieties of butterflies which live locally, and lots of them have specific caterpillar and adult food requirements – so it’s not easy to give a definitive list of things to plant. Typically, plants like Bottlebrush, Buddleia, Daisies, Grevillea, Kangaroo Paw, Lavender, Verbena, Tea Tree, Wattle, Crepe Myrtle, Citrus, Sassafras, Portulaca, Snapdragons, and Native Violet are great. Your local nursery will be able to help with others. Butterflies also need water to drink. Shallow garden ponds or bird baths are good. To keep them from breeding mossies, you can fill a bird bath with coarse sand so that it stays wet, but isn’t enough for wrigglers to live in. Just as important is to avoid using pesticides as much as possible, and to eliminate plants which are poisonous to butterflies (such as Dutchman’s Pipe vine). If you’d like to know more about butterflies in the garden, what types we have, and how best to encourage them, Moreton Regional Council have a fantastic booklet called ‘Butterflies of the Moreton Bay Region’ – just go to their website www moretonbay.qld.gov.au and search for ‘butterfly’. Locally, the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) are looking for people to contact them if they have been growing the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine and have seen caterpillars eating it this year. GMAN wants to keep track of how the endangered butterfly is faring locally. They can be contacted on 5493 0029 or 5438 7118.

Plant of the Month
Native Iris
Patersonia species The Native Iris is one of the most commonly seen species throughout the forests and even swampy habitats of the Glass House Mountains. Though at least three different species exist with minor differences between them, all are grass like plants, with strap like or slightly rounded leaves. Growing only to between 50 and 80 centimetres, they are seldom noticed until the deep purple / blue flowers appear. Native Iris has three petals enclosed in green or brownish bracts. Flowers are followed by a cylindrical capsule with papery seeds. Hybrids of Native Iris are popular rockery plants and can be obtained from many native plant nurseries.

Tips for finding the property you want Finding the ideal property isn’t always easy. Most buyers have a wish list they want to meet when they approach the real estate market, but more often than not, compromises are necessary. We’ve put together some handy advice that could help you find that home you have always dreamt of. Build your own A growing number of Australians are choosing to build their own property, rather than buy one that has already been constructed. This has a wide range of benefits, www.gcnews.com.au
not least because you can construct it to the specification you have in mind. The Housing Industry Association (HIA) reveals that more people than ever are choosing this option, as new home building approvals reached a record high in March. New dwelling approvals hit 19,419 over the course of the month, up 2.8 per cent from February. Once you’ve secured that allimportant construction loan, you can then get to work on finding the ideal piece of land for your venture.
Buy a new build If the thought of constructing your own home is a step too far, you might find your perfect property in the form of a new build. New build properties have their benefits.New build properties have their benefits. The April Australian Industry Group/Housing Industry Association Australian Performance of Construction Index shows that residential construction remains strong across the nation. The rate of growth slowed 4.2
points from the previous month, but the index still returned a positive reading of 51.6 points. New builds have several advantages over existing properties, as you might be able to choose certain features such as the kitchen, carpets and light fittings. Property of the week
A change of pace This impressive property could be your chance to escape to the country. The two storey residence presents many options with five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large rumpus room and wide sweeping verandahs; it lends itself to eco tourism. Nestled in the foothills of Mount Mellum and on the doorstep of the state forest and Dularcha National Park, this private and peaceful property has been selectively cleared. A small plantation of Thai D’asper green bamboo is now established next to the tributary of the Mooloolah River that flows through the 34 acre block. Elevated and well drained, the north facing land has an abundance of wild life. A spring fed dam compliments the 10,000 gallons of tank water.
This idyllic spot has not changed hands for the last 23 years and once you are here you will understand why. $645,000. Contact Roger Guillemet 0418 485 954 or 5439 6300

Situated at the gateway to the Sunshine Coast it would suit someone who might work towards Brisbane while enjoying the added benefit of being close to the beautiful coastal beaches. The 2 storey, 3 bedroom home is well laid out. The top level includes 2 bedrooms - both with air conditioning, and a separate bathroom. Downstairs there is 1 bedroom and a separate bathroom which is ideal for guests. The centrally positioned kitchen opens out onto one of the two living areas. The easy care, fully fenced, landscaped grounds have a separate BBQ area and rotunda to relax in, or you could enjoy swimming in the in-ground pool. There is plenty of covered space for the vehicles, plus a double lock up shed that can be also accessed at the rear of the property.

When is the right time to make a change? Do you feel like you are cruising along with life, believing that sometime in the future everything will change and you will finally be able to do what you want to be doing, living how and where you want to be? Sometimes our environment is preventing our dreams from coming to pass. Sometimes work or our financial situation is so tough it seems unlikely to change for the better anytime soon. If I’m realistic, I can see a society moving faster in a direction that is forcing myself and my family into it’s mold more successfully than I can resist or counteract it. I have a picture of what I would like for my children in years to come and I wonder if I’m waiting for the right time

to make some changes that will see it come to pass? When is the right time? When the enemy is getting stronger, the right time is always now! I’ve been studying about Martin Luther, the great reformer who stood up to the Roman Catholic Church (at risk of excommunication or being burned at the stake as a heretic) against things such as making people pay money to the church for forgiveness of their sins or to free their dead relatives out of purgatory (which is a place they invented and is not found in the Bible by the way). Luther did not wait until there was an army behind him to make a stand. He didn’t wait until the time was easier to share his message of hope for the people and challenge for the hierarchy. He knew that if evil were to win, those most guilty would be the ones who had the knowledge yet failed to act. He would be guilty if he did not rely of the strength of God, wisdom and courage from the Holy Spirit to make the change now! I don’t know what your vision is but are you waiting for the right time, which will never come? See you in church!
May 31. Please call Alison on 0412 137 250 for further details. The Eudlo Car and Motorcycle Show - will be held at the State School on Saturday, June 13. The organisers aren’t just looking for classic or hot cars and bikes, they're looking for anything that is unusual and different. If you've got something a little ‘out there’ register it at eudlocarandmotorcycleshow@gmail.com or private message their Facebook page ‘Eudlo Car and Motorbike Show’.

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Wouldn’t understand There was a smart alec young uni student walking on the beach who took it upon himself, to explain to a senior citizen resting on some steps, just why it was impossible for the older generation to understand the younger generation. “You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one,” the student said, loud enough for others to hear. “Whereas the young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking
on the moon. We have nuclear energy, mobile phones, computers with light speed... and so much more,” he said. After a brief silence, the senior citizen replied, “you’re right son, we didn’t have those things when we were young... so we invented them.” Now, you arrogant piece of work, what are you doing for the next generation? Week beginning 20/05/2015 TAURUS April 21 – May 21 With Mercury going retrograde now, for the next three weeks, put up a reminder on your fridge to tread carefully when it comes to financial expenditures. Instead of acting, its best to pause and rethink your plans again. Get ready to try something new to get good results in three weeks. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Normally you don’t like sitting still for long, however with Mercury retrograding, prepare for confusion, misdirection, or misunderstandings. It’s a three week period where you may find yourself restless during the early morning hours, but all you will have to do is to sit down to write a list. CANCER June 22 – July 22 The new Moon this week in the practical sign of Taurus puts a positive accent on any friendship and group involvements. With Mercury turning retrograde for three weeks, you may be preoccupied with private concerns over family matters, and may lose sleep over them. Avoid excessive worries. LEO July 23 – August 22 This new Moon week is in your business zone, putting the whole monthly emphasis on your professional and public status. You must now make room for stable revisions, under three week Mercury retrograde period. Reviews are much better than new actions at this time.
VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This new Moon week focuses your attention on distant places, perhaps with the idea of planning a special travel trip. As your ruler Mercury turns retrograde, it may start to feel like for each step forward, you may have to take two steps back, to review your past. Double check documents. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This is the week under the new Moon in Taurus that you revise your spending agendas, which need a fresh look over the next three week period. Because of Mercury retrograde there is stalled travel or rethinking schedules. Watch out for manipulation with a social connection. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The accent for this week is in partnership affairs. Perhaps there is a need to resolve questions of self worth and values and decide about how much things might cost. Mercury in its retrograde period, for the next three weeks, may mean you are having to go back to square one and rethink. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This new Moon week may serve your daily life better to maintain a grounded schedule. This possibly entails a doctor’s visit or physical therapy to check out a nervous problem. Mercury retrograde for three weeks requires you to play your cards right by revising negative contacts.
CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 With Mercury going retrograde and under Venus in Cancer, being your opposite sign, there is a signal for the next three weeks requiring caution with regards to work stress. For three weeks it's best not being too quick to commit. Keep conflicts in proper perspective now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This new Moon week sets the tone for your business month ahead. This is a good time to plant seeds for practical success without overdoing financial expenditures. With Mercury being retrograde for three weeks keep yourself into a calm, caring family energy as Venus nurtures you. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Under a Venus ruled new Moon this week, as well as Venus being in Cancer, a romantic fantasy can come true over lunch or dinner. Engage in all activities that are about peace, beauty, and inspiration with artworks. Some delays for the next three weeks, but it is just a review or replay period. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The new Moon opened this week with the emphasis on your possessions and values. Pay attention to any financial and banking matters in the weeks ahead. Be grounded and practical as Mercury has started its three week’s retrograde period. This means communications become confused.
