Hi Everyone
Y
ou may have noticed that in this week’s edition we have also included Maleny News on the masthead (header on
front page). For the past few months, we have been delivering Glasshouse Country News into all of the households in Maleny, (on the third week of the month). For each of these editions, the paper had a different four page cover, and included Maleny News as part of the title. In these editions we used the opportunity to make the Maleny community aware of how our independently owned weekly newspaper works, and encouraged
Maleny locals to share what is happening up the hill with the rest of us. With each of the townships being so close, and each having their own distinct character, it seemed to make sense to bring all of the local community news together. We have received lots of positive feedback from readers who enjoy the type of publication that we are and from this week we will be delivering into Maleny twice a month (so we have decided to embrace our new name to reflect this). We are still the same paper, how we operate won’t change and our commitment to the community will not waver, we will just be embracing more of what is great about living in the Hinterland. Regards,

Local News
Sports Club battles on By Lea Parkes Over the holiday season the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club committee have continued their battle to secure a future for the sporting groups that use the sporting fields and facilities established by the hard work of many locals over its long history. With the mounting debt, combined with the club’s future capacity to generate profit from their commercial activities of meal and bar service and function room hire, the decision was made to not continue these commercial activities after closing the doors in 2014. Club President Ken Fullerton said that knowing how important it is for the allied clubs which use the fields and facilities, they have been working closely with our government representatives to see what assistance they could provide the club. A public meeting will be held at the club on Thursday, January 22 at 7.00pm where further discussions will take place about securing the club’s future and how the debt can be paid off. “At this stage, there have been some positive indications from state and local government regarding the use of the fields,” said Ken. However, payment of the debt relating to the building / club house are proving to be a sticking

point for giving affiliated sporting clubs access to the grandstand, canteen and change rooms and other facilities. “As the full responsibility of the club’s running costs will now have to be borne by the affiliated sporting clubs, we will see a return to the past where volunteers once again are relied on as the backbone of the club,” he said. Ken Fullerton would encourage locals who want to be part of a solution for the future to come along to the meeting and share their ideas. “The committee is going to organise a ‘Save our Club’ campaign, with the full assistance of Mal Brough and Andrew Powell,” Ken said. The club will need as many local businesses and families to get on board as possible and this will be in full swing over the next few weeks. GCNews will keep you updated as more information on how you can become involved is available. The club’s Australia Day Weekend Show ‘n Shine and family celebration will definitely be going ahead on Sunday, January 25 (please note that is Sunday not the Monday public holiday.) To find out more about the day check out their ad on page 12. The affiliated sporting clubs would appreciate your support at this fundraiser.

Slim loves his Holdens Local Landsborough identity Slim Moroney is proud as punch with his new Holden – and he’s had a few of them over the years. Bought as an 80th birthday present to himself, Slim decided to invest in the most recent model Commodore – a 2014 Holden Commodore SS-V Redline ‘Craig Lowndes Special Edition’. This puts Slim amongst a select group – being one of only about 230 such owners in Australia. His is build number 80, to match his birthday. But what makes Slim’s situation possibly a one-of-a-kind, is the fact that he now owns the first Australian-made Holden model and the last Australian-made Holden model. His pride and joy is the 1950 Holden FX. “I bought that car 10 years ago at an auction from a bloke at Caloundra. They found he had a shed full of cars and bits and pieces, and the FX was one of them. “It was in pretty good nick too – just needed some paint and rust work done, which Paul O’Mara sorted out for me,” said Slim. The ‘Craig Lowndes’ Commodore has a number of special features that the FX doesn’t, such as

20 inch wheels, automatic park assist, an 8 inch touch screen and racing style steering wheel mounted control paddles. But one feature that they both share is a push button ignition. Slim says that, for him, the Commodore is just a normal about-town car … not something that he’ll want to show. But the FX is different. “The FX has won a couple of first places at Holden shows. It’s still got most of its original features, including the manual switch to turn on the rear tail light located on the tail light fitting.” If you love checking out other people’s cars don’t forget to head down to the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Steve Irwin Way, this Sunday for their Show ’n Shine, vehicle registration is from 8.30am.

LNP promises to fund rail duplication to Landsborough After years of both sides of politics promising to duplicate the rail line to Nambour, the Liberal-National Party (LNP) last week made a firm commitment as part of their election campaign. The $532 million pledge for the duplication is dependent upon funds from the LNP’s planned asset leasing policy, with completion of the rail duplication scheduled for 2019. State Members for Caloundra Mark McArdle, and Glass House Andrew Powell, are elated that this collaborative long-term lobbying with the five other Sunshine Coast sitting members for the duplication of the rail line between Beerburrum and Landsborough has finally paid off, with Premier Campbell Newman announcing funding for this project. Mr McArdle said “I believe this is one of the most important projects for the future of the Sunshine Coast and its economy. “Not only will the upgrade to the rail improve travel times and reliability between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, the upgrade will provide more than 150 extra weekly services. "Further, the construction phase will create over 3,000 jobs in the region. This is such exciting news for Sunshine Coast residents. “If the Newman LNP Government is re-elected, we’ll get on with the job. Unlike the Labor government who did a ‘back-flip’ on delivering this vital project in 2009,” he said.
In response, Labor Shadow Transport Minister, Jackie Trad, says the LNP has announced another unfunded commitment with no guarantee it will be delivered, because of the Premier’s own admission of doubts about asset sales. “The Premier himself has confessed that the assets he wants to include in his fire sale may not attract a buyer, and if they do, they may not attract the price the LNP has artificially placed on them,” Ms Trad said. “The LNP has no ‘Plan B’ if that happens, so any promise the Premier or anyone in the LNP makes simply cannot be believed,” said Ms Trad. Local Greens candidate for Glass House, David Knobel sees the announcement as a cynical attempt to bribe the Sunshine Coast voters into accepting the lease of public assets. “The Greens have long been proponents of the rail duplication from Beerburrum to Nambour and welcome the commitment to public transport infrastructure from the LNP this week. However, this is a promise contingent on the lease of assets that the Queensland people have already said they don’t want,” he said. “They are dangling a carrot while threatening the coast with the big stick of asset privatisation. The Greens will strive for a commitment to these vital Sunshine Coast projects while fighting to retain essential services in public hands,” Mr Knobel said.

The well known and established healthy snack food company – Partner Foods – has outgrown its current Maleny premises. Partner Foods produces roasted chick pea and broad bean snack products, marketed under the brands Chic Nuts and Fava Nuts. After receiving Council approvals, they have commenced construction of their new purpose built processing, production and packaging facility on the corner block of the new industrial area at Landsborough, adjacent to Transportable Shade Sheds. The site – which was once earmarked for a McDonalds store – is the perfect location, according to Partner Foods Managing Director Craig Agnew. “We have been growing and have plans to

expand our range of products, as well as develop export markets,” Craig said. “It has good exposure and access to major roads and transport lines, and is in an area we see as having potential for agri-business growth in the future. “The current Maleny site has been good for where we started until now, but we needed to make the move to step to the next level. “We hope to have the construction completed by the end of May and then the operations up and running as soon as possible after that.” The design plans show a modern building with a smart frontage, which will be aesthetically attractive at the ‘gateway’ entrance to Landsborough. Craig is confident that they will be doubling their capacity and throughput almost immediately, which will be made possible because of the improved layout and systems they can implement at the new site. “All our current staff will be making the move, and we hope to be able to offer more jobs to the local area once we’ve established and start to grow. “We are pleased that the building phase is underway and are looking forward to becoming a valued part of the Landsborough community,” said Craig. Local fruits may be US bound Last week, the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce made a doorstop visit to the Mooloolah lychee farm of Jill Houser. The stopover to the 2200 lychee tree orchard on Old Gympie Road was to announce a new and lucrative market for local growers of mangoes and lychees. Under the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement, Australian lychee and mango growers are now able to export to the US, opening the door to an opportunity for local farmers to expand their production. Minister Joyce congratulated lychee and mango growers, exporters and the food treatment industry that have helped pave the way to open the valuable US market and wished them every success. “I look forward to an increase in the numbers of growers who take up the opportunity presented by this US deal into the future,” Minister Joyce said. Currently, the value of mango exports is only $16 million and lychees $18-20 million, however, the Minister says the deal will mean more money in farmers’ pockets. “New market access to the US is one way we can take our quality produce to the rest of the world. “What sells Australian fruit to the world is our quality of product. The lychee and mango industries know it and they have worked hard to ensure they are growing some of the best produce in the world,” he said. The mango market is open immediately for

Trevor Dunmall (Australian Mango Industry Association) and Jill Houser show Minister Joyce what great fruit the US can expect to receive from local farms exports to the US; however the first lychee exports will happen in a year or so. “The hurdles have been cleared to get into the US market, and it’s just a matter of finalising the details.” The Minister proudly touted that this was another win for rural production. “This announcement sits on the back of recent record cattle prices, new markets for live sheep exports, improved live cattle exports, and we continue to pave the way with new free trade agreements,” said Minister Joyce. “The Australian Government remains committed to increasing returns at the farmgate for our growers and producers by opening new markets and business opportunities.”

Zipline protest targets Powell’s office Last Friday, a group of around 25 Montville, Mapleton and Maleny community members took their concerns about the planned commercial zipline tourism development through the Kondalilla National Park, to the office of Andrew Powell.
Unit 2/11 Dyer Street, Landsborough Miss Rebecca 040 967 3559 www.blackswanschoolofdance.com
And just as any good protest in Maleny, along with the placards, there was singing, puppetry and even a dog with a protest sign. The peaceful demonstration was to raise awareness of their concerns about the appropriateness of such a development in the local national park. David Knobel, Greens candidate for Glass House, attended to listen to the concerns of the group, and spoke with GCNews. “One of the most common issues that I have had people discuss with me in this election campaign is their concern about the plan to open the Kondalilla Falls National Park up to adventure tourism and construct a zipline over the Obi Obi Gorge,” said David. “A zipline itself is not necessarily a bad thing; I believe there should be a diverse mix of tourism options to entice travellers to the towns in the Glass House electorate.”
According to David, the major concerns he is hearing relate to the potential damage to the fragile rainforest ecosystem, and the way in which the proposal has been conducted. “No other site has been considered, and noise concerns from residents along Narrows Road were never considered. “Only preliminary concept documents were produced before the proposal went into the State Government tender process, making it 'commercial in confidence' thus effectively excluding the community from raising concerns. They have been left in the dark about the proposal, its impact on threatened species, and its economic viability. “Environment Minister Powell and National Parks Minister Dickson need to answer the community's concerns,” he said.

Community to gather for special forest With proposals still poised to affect local businesses and destroy significant areas of the valued Steve Irwin Way Forest, the community is coming together once again on January 24 at the grounds of Daisy’s Place on Steve Irwin Way, Glenview.

“This family-friendly event is a celebration of a wonderful natural asset within the region,” said Narelle McCarthy of the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC). “It is also a chance for people to hear more about the plans for the realignment of the Steve Irwin Way and Caloundra Road interchange and proposals such as intensive motorsports,” Ms McCarthy said. “While the tender for a proposed off-road motorcycling facility in the Mooloolah Logging Area was withdrawn late last year by Minister for National Parks, Sport ,Recreation and Racing Steve Dickson MP, concerns that some form of intensive activity may be located in this sensitive and inappropriate area have not been entirely allayed,” said Ms McCarthy. “The proposals have some merit including traffic safety and recreation opportunities. However, we consider the scale and impact of the current road design as unnecessary and the site inappropriate for intensive activities. The projects are socially, economically and environmentally unacceptable and warrant a major rethink,” Ms McCarthy advised. The event is part of wider community action which includes a postcard campaign to highlight the values of the forest and have it protected for future generations.
The community day will be a fun and informative way to experience and celebrate the cultural and natural heritage of this area and what makes the Sunshine Coast the special place it is. The current design put out by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in April 2013 would; • Clear 24 hectares of high-value vegetation containing endangered plant and animal species, including koala habitat, wetlands and critically endangered sub-tropical lowland rainforest (Federally listed) • Negatively impact a substantially larger area resulting in isolated and unviable habitat for threatened species • Cut off direct highway access to established local businesses • Require significant expenditure of taxpayer funds on a highly questionable design • Require resumption of council land at the Mooloolah Cemetery • Degrade the natural amenity of the ‘Gateway to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland’ • Fragment an integral part of a ‘bioregional corridor’ from the coastal lowlands to the hinterland vital for wildlife movement and the viability of species.

The Palmview Forest land development boasts strong local connections and an interesting local history, not least of which is the lasting impression the land has left on Palmview itself. The land was family-owned since the early years of the last century and initially provided lumber and logs for various projects throughout Queensland and New Guinea. In more recent decades the land was run as a farm. The farmhouse was originally called ‘Palmvale’ and this in time became the local Post Office and

Community News Tourism grant for Bindi's Island Member for Fisher Mal Brough offered his personal congratulations to the Irwin Family recently at the official opening of Australia Zoo’s latest attraction, Bindi’s Island. Mr Brough said tourism is such a key part of our local economy and the new attraction offers a compelling point of difference to the range of tourism opportunities already bringing visitors to the Sunshine Coast. The Federal Government was pleased to be able to support the Zoo with a $110,000 Tourism Grant to help build Bindi’s Island. Mr Brough said that tourism grants such as this one are very important to our region. “Australia Zoo is one of three businesses in our region to receive a Federal Government tourism grant in this round. “These grants are integral to the Sunshine Coast as they not only assist in increasing tourism numbers, but they also create employment opportunities and positively contribute to our local economy. “The Irwin family and Australia Zoo continue to do great things for the Sunshine Coast and for wildlife conservation and I am pleased that this Federal Government grant is contributing to their continued success," Mr Brough said.

Contributed by Jenny Morris What a great way to start the New Year for the Country Glass House View Club, meeting up with 28 club members at the Lookout Café at Glass House Mountains on January the 7. With a lovely view of the mountains the women enjoyed a scrumptious morning tea and catching up with the ‘goss’ about events over Xmas. There was lots of chatter among our ladies and much laughter as well. Margaret Donoghoe, Rosalea Stevens I must compliment the staff as they and guest attended to our orders for coffee and cake or even breakfast in very quick time. They were also very busy with other customers as well. Thanks go to Daniel and the ladies helping in the kitchen for their efficient service. A lovely morning was had by all. Our venue for meetings will be changed, so after our AGM on January 21 the new Committee will have to decide where our future meetings will be held. All Maree, Mary, Glenda, Robyn and Gwen members please keep in touch to find out where our new meeting place will be. New contact phone numbers will be available after the AGM. VIEW provides women with the opportunity to meet regularly with other women from all walks of life, establish lasting friendships, and help disadvantaged Australians through supporting the work of The Smith Family. Thongs for Seaside
Two years ago you may remember the Thongathon that was organised by Colin and Valmai Phillips from Glass House Mountains. Thongs for Seaside was a donation drive for a village in Vanuatu. It was very successful which made a lot of children and families very happy, not only for the school at Seaside, but to a lot of other villages around the island. Valmai said they are now going back in April and are looking for donations of cricketing equipment for both senior and juniors. “If you have any such things lying around your house that your family have out grown, or lost interest in, we would be very grateful to relieve you of them,” she said. They have already collected some pieces but have no wickets and bails, a couple more balls and a pair of senior’ catching gloves are definitely high on their wish list. If you could help in any way, no matter how small, items can be dropped off at Mrs Browns Coffee Shop in Beerwah or the Glass house Country News office in Glass House. Colin and Valmai are hoping that this drive will be as successful as the last one. Children of different villages from Valmai and Colin's last visit

On Thursday morning one of the Australia Zoo keepers was very surprised to find a wild baby ring-tailed possum on the back of their gorgeous camel Gypsy hiding in her soft hair. Another little possum was soon found in the garden next to the camel enclosure leaving keepers to wonder what had led these juveniles to embark on a camel ride adventure during the night. Keepers spotted ‘mumma’ possum high in a nearby tree so after a quick consultation with the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, operation ‘Possum Relocation’ was underway! Robert Irwin is a skilled tree climber so he was in charge of securing a small cardboard box to a branch in the tree and depositing the babies in there for their mother to return and collect them safely off the ground. Ring-tailed possums are often preyed on by carpet snakes which are particularly active during
summer. It’s assumed that these babies fell from their mother’s back during the night while moving from tree to tree, as they can get quite heavy, or fell while being chased by a predator. Either way, Gypsy proved a gracious baby sitter. Photographer Barbara Fiala-Burke (Keeper) Photographer Ben Beaden Australia Zoo

Help needed to save cows Last week GCNews was contacted by Anthony Walsgott who has been running the ‘Save a Cow Program’ since 2010. During that time he has saved 150 calves / bobby calves from the slaughterhouse. Anthony provides forever homes for the cows he saves (for the term of their natural lives) and provides daily care for these cows on a number of sanctuaries where he says they can live out their lives free of human exploitation. The Conondale Sanctuary in Queensland Australia is one of these ‘Save A Cow’ Sanctuaries and is a beautiful, healthy home for more than 50 cows. Anthony said for the past five years he has been voluntarily working (extremely full-time) without any remuneration and using any money he had from savings and any money from donations to pay for all of the costs of running the ‘Save a Cow’ Program. He estimates that he has also contributed over

The project currently has an outstanding debt for cow paddock rental at the Conondale Sanctuary totalling $6,185.58, reflecting six month’s rent. Anthony has established a ‘Go Fund Me’ initiative and is keen to seek the support from locals who could contribute to raising the funds required. Currently over $2,000.00 has been pledged. It offers a practical and individualised approach aimed at restoring a parent-child relationship which has become imbalanced because the child seeks control through oppositional behaviour. Parents will gain skills in child management which will help foster a loving functional relationship. Operating on Tuesday and Friday mornings at the Landsborough State School, the program runs for three to six weeks, depending on the needs of each individual family. Each session runs for approximately 45 minutes and there is a minimal cost of $10.00 to cover the cost of consumables.
The Plug What: Management of Young Children Program (MYCP) Where: Tuesday and Friday mornings at the Landsborough State School Cost: $10.00 Contact: Andrew Graham, Guidance Officer at Landsborough State School on 5436 2777
Tracy Green and Andrew Graham are looking forward to operating the MYCP at Landsborough. All team members of MYCP have experience in managing young children’s behaviour and have a background in education, child development and / or psychology. They are employees of Education Queensland. Local families living in the Landsborough, Peachester, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum State School communities are eligible for the Landsborough based MYCP program. School aged children must be enrolled at one of the identified schools. If under school age, children must reside in one of the identified state school communities regardless of the child care or kindergarten setting they may be attending. For further details or to register your interest please contact Andrew Graham, Guidance Officer at Landsborough State School on 5436 2777. Alternatively you can talk to your child's teacher, school principal, Kindy or Day Care provider. The initiative has been made possible thanks to the Glass House Coalition of State Schools and aims to promote skill building and relationship development.
Beerburrum State School Small School Experience - BIG OPPORTUNITIES
Contributed by Andrea Hosier Peachester State Primary celebrated the end of the year in the last school week with parties, swimming carnivals and a wonderful awards night recognising each years high achievers and best efforts. The school’s swimming carnival was held at Beerwah pool and the contest was on again between Stanley and Coochin. It was a close race with all members of each house putting in their finest performances. Stanley was triumphant again, bringing smiles to all those in blue. Mums, dads and friends cheered the kids, closing the day with a reward free swim for outstanding behaviour and rule following throughout the year. Awards night started with a twilight dinner, performances given by each year and certificates of excellence presented to the deserving few. Books were presented for academic excellence to one child from each year and were just deserved. Last year was a fabulous year for Peachester school and we were sad to see the Year 6 and 7’s depart, but all feel the new format of Years Prep to Year 6 will be a roaring success in 2015.

Intersection chaos
Thanks to Peter Webb of Glass House Mountains for reminding us how fortunate we are.
Question for Andrew Powell
I understand Reed Street Intersection with Steve Irwin Way is to be upgraded (a starting date would be appreciated). This then leads to and creates the next problem. Bowen Road already creates a large problem exiting onto Steve Irwin Way. With two lots of traffic coming from Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way controlled by traffic lights there will be a continuous line heading south together with intermittent traffic heading north. Then if there is a diversion down Johnston Road caused by an accident, traffic comes to a standstill down Bowen Road. Urgent attention and consideration must be included in any upgrade of Steve Irwin Way. Please advise your intentions on this matter. Keith A Mann Glass House Mountains

Safety concerns
On Saturday, December 27, the day of the opening of the Woodford Folk Festival, the Beerwah – Woodford Road, one of the roads where thousands travelled to the festival, is narrow, frequently winding up and down hills, double white lines and blind corners a lot of the way.
Who is protecting National Parks?
Without community consultation; with access to information blocked because of 'commercial in confidence', the Newman Government has approved a Zipline for Iconic Kondalilla National Park. Only Queensland wants a zipline in a National Park, all other adventure tourism businesses are on private or, as in Tasmania, ex-forestry, logged and degraded land. Of great concern is recent news that the existing trees in the proposed area are unsuitable for the huge cloud stations, four times crossing Obi Obi Creek. That means gigantic metal or concrete poles will need to be installed. I see the scenario. Noisy caterpillars, earth shattering pole drivers, crashing through bush. How does this machinery get across the Creek? Or will cranes be on site for months? And this is just the construction phase. What damage to ancient trees, fragile ferns; rare orchids, pristine creek, all threatened alongside supposedly ‘protected’ wildlife. When do we see the damage assessment for ongoing management; removing damaged or fallen trees, new growth and weed management of land cleared? What are the provisions for emergency access in case of a serious accident? So much not discussed and no information is available for the community to examine. National Parks are sanctuaries for fauna and flora! The Great Walks provides the peaceful enjoyment of this environment. Kondalilla NP contains endangered and at-risk species. Let’s get real. A Zipline is adventure tourism and is marketed as such. It is not ecotourism. No other site was considered for this project by the
Newman Government even though it is contrary to the guidelines for National Parks use. The applicant is an overseas entrepreneur with no understanding of this environment and no allegiance to Australia. It seems only dollar signs are the ones that counted. Democracy has been ignored. The nearest residents were never informed. No community submissions were sought. Consultations was ‘by invitation only’ with vested interests. Queenslanders have been denied their basic rights. Have the government leaders gagged our local representatives? How could Steve Dickson, member for Buderim, and Minster for National Parks approve this application? And Andrew Powell, local member and Minister for the Environment? Why is he not defending the integrity of our National Parks? Pam Maegdefrau and Jim Cox Montville

Thank you to a lady who was at the Landsbourough Medical Centre last Tuesday, (January 13). She was there for an appointment. I was bitten by a dog and was bleeding all over the place. I had managed to get myself to the doctors and by the time I got there, I was literally covered in blood. Fortunately she grabbed my arm and stayed with me until my husband came. All I know that she is a nurse and her name was Sam. Thankfully she stayed while I went into shock, I’m just so grateful for her kindness. PS: nurses are a special kind of person Colleen Gray Beerwah
Editor’s note
Locals should be aware that there has been a scam phone call made to a resident in Peachester, he received an overseas phone call advising that his bank account had been overdrawn. Sensing it was a scam he hung up from the call and phoned his bank to confirm whether the call was legitimate. He had suspected correctly that it was a scam and has asked us to let readers know not to provide any information of account details from unsolicited callers.

Away from the mainstream Sometimes, when you travel off the regular tourist paths, you can be pleasantly surprised by the unexpected. In this case I was travelling in the Andean region of northern Chile in an area where not many tourists frequent. There was no notification of any events in the district at that time. Entering the town of Putre I came on a local festival of the Aymaran culture. The whole town buzzed with the vibrant colours, music and traditional dancing. Even though they spoke no English, and my Spanish was very limited, they warmly welcomed me and encouraged me to mingle and photograph the festivities. Nikon D800 24mm 1/100sec at f11, ISO 100

Farewell to 2014 Recently Debbie Anson-Choma of Glass House Mountains had her brother Tom Donnelly, from Western Australia, staying. While he was visiting he took this great photo of the last sunset for the year, on December 31 with his phone. Deb thought GCNews readers might enjoy seeing the photo as well. Thanks for sharing! Tom is in the process of packing up and moving back to Queensland after 22 years away in the west, so we may just be seeing a few more of his snaps in the future.
Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley Hello all and a very happy new year to you, It was a terrific end to the last year with the Glasshouse Information and Interpretive Centre taking out Silver at the Queensland Tourism Awards, a very proud moment. We have had a very busy summer season at the Information Centre with many visitors from overseas. Trying to organise travel details in another language… life is never dull for our Volunteer Ambassadors. Looking forward to the new year, we are planning to visit a number of local members to update our knowledge on the area, and once it cools a bit, we will be day tripping in the Glass House Mountains. I do not think I am quite up to Tibrogargan but who knows? The local Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) organisation has a range of accompanied walks that we hope to do. At the end of 2014, the Lookout Café hosted the Volunteer Ambassadors for a morning tea, around 30 enjoyed coffee and delicious scones and jam. I opted to let those on duty go that day, and stayed in the centre, they rewarded me with my own morning tea carefully packed and brought back. The crew at the Lookout Café do a wonderful job with our visitors to the region; it is in such a lovely spot too. If you have a moment to spare, pop up for a coffee. Please come and see us at the centre if you are passing and have a chat with us. If you have a few spare hours why not volunteer?

Election 2015 In last week’s edition we offered each of the candidates the opportunity to introduce themselves and what they stand for. Our approach as it has been in past elections, was for candidates to focus on what they could do – not on what their opponents were or weren’t doing. In this instance our normal process was not followed - we apologise for this. Following a request from the Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle we are printing the unedited version of his column (see below). Please note that our continued election editorial features with candidates will conform to our regular approach.
Mark McArdle LNP for Caloundra
5491 2780 F: MarkMcArdleMP E: caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au
I was elected State Member for Caloundra in 2004 and since 2009 it has been a privilege to represent people of the Hinterland. The Hinterland is a unique area vastly different to the coastal city of Caloundra. It offers unique environmental and social qualities that we need to protect. At the same time the Hinterland offers unique economic opportunities and there is a clear obligation for people of the Hinterland to mold their own lifestyle and economic growth. The qualities that have made the regions of Beerwah, Landsborough, Mooloolah and Glenview define the Sunshine Coast. It caters for a diverse range of lifestyles and the Hinterland is an integral part of that diversity. The Newman LNP Government has worked hard over the last three years to ensure all Queenslanders get better health care and schools, better roads and public transport and a safer community to live in. But there is still work to do. If Hinterland voters give us the mandate for our Strong Choices Economic Plan we will pay down some of Labor’s $80 billion debt and reinvest in job creating infrastructure, such as schools, roads, rail and hospitals. In my portfolio of Energy, Strong Choices would use $3.4 billion to remove the cost of Solar Bonus Scheme from electricity bills. We are planning for the future and all Queenslanders will share in it. The Newman LNP Government’s plan will put Queensland on track to record the strongest growth of any state this year. But we cannot afford to take anything for granted. Hinterland voters have a clear choice. Do they want a strong team with a strong plan to grow our economy and create jobs? Or do they want a return to the chaos of Labor?
Making your vote count on the day With the election on Saturday, January 31, not only do you need to know what electorate you are in and remember to bring some form of identification on the day, you need to understand how the voting works to make yours count. Queensland has only one House of Parliament – the legislative assembly or lower house. This means that you will only receive one ballot paper (as opposed to the two you fill in at the Federal election). You will be directed to a voting station, where you should read the instructions on the ballot paper carefully, fill out your voting preferences, fold the ballot paper and place it in the secure ballot box provided. In Queensland, we use an ‘optional preferential’ voting system, where a candidate is to receive 50% plus 1 vote to win an electorate, unless enough people used the non-full preferencing methods as set out below (‘vote for one’ and ‘vote for some’) , where the contest then becomes a ‘first past the post’ result. You can cast your vote in one of three ways. Vote for one – where you mark a 1, a tick or a cross in the box next to the one and only candidate you want to vote for and leave the other boxes blank. This means only that candidate gets a vote and you forgo giving anyone else your second (or subsequent) preference. This method gives your vote the least ‘power’. This is because if your selected candidate falls to the bottom of the list during the counting, you have no further say in who is elected, and the winning candidate may be elected with considerably less that a 50%
majority vote. Vote for some – where you mark some, but not all of the boxes with your preferences in order … 1, 2, 3, etc. This gives your vote greater power to elect the persons you think are most deserving. Vote for all – where you mark all boxes with your numbered preference in order from 1 to the maximum number of candidates (4 in Glass House and 5 in Caloundra). This way you maximise your voting power by outlining who you want least to be elected, meaning that all your preferences will count, right to the end. A couple of things to remember to make your vote valid … don’t use the same number twice; don’t skip numbers; don’t use anything other than a 1, a cross or a tick if using the ‘vote for one’ method; and don’t use anything but consecutive numbers in using the ‘vote for some’ or the ‘vote for all’ methods’. And don’t write comments on the ballot paper. You might think them witty, poignant or cutting, but no one really cares. The vote counters just count the votes, they don’t take notice of the comments and they aren’t seen by anyone who you might be directing the comments at. If you need help in the act of making your vote (not who to vote for), you can have someone accompany you to the polling booth. Or you can ask a polling official inside the polling station for help. In our next edition, we’ll tell you where the polling booths are located for both Caloundra and Glass House electorates, and we’ll publish a map of the Glass House electorate.
Caloundra electorate
The following candidates were invited to contribute but no response has been received by our print deadline. Phil Collins – Palmer United Party, candidate for Caloundra Scott Higgins – Palmer United Party, candidate for Glass House. A fifth candidate for Caloundra nominated after we went to print last week – Berry Jones, Independent. Barry was offered the opportunity to provide a candidate profile and to answer this week’s questions. Barry contacted us to thank us for the opportunity, but he would not have the time to get it to us by our deadline. He did say that locals can see his profile at http://mysunshinecoast.com.au 30 |

Question 1 The most important social issue affecting our region is unemployment, particularly youth unemployment (14.7% in the electorate of Glass House). Families and, more broadly, communities cannot effectively function if our young people can’t find work. Labor has a proud history of creating employment opportunities and standing up for workers. We’ve already announced a series of policies to combat youth unemployment, including: fulltime guidance officers in high schools of more than 500 students; reinstating TAFE funding to once again make TAFE courses affordable; and providing a 25% payroll tax rebate for apprentices. On top off this we are creating direct employment opportunities with the hiring of additional nurses, mid wives and teachers to bolster our frontline services. Over the past couple of months as I’ve spoken with residents around the electorate, the number one environmental issue they’ve raised is Halls Creek. Future development of the parcel of land known as Halls Creek would have dire consequences for all aspects of the Pumicestone Passage, from water quality to the health of marine creatures, birds and plants. This development would also significantly cut into the vital inter-urban break – the green gateway to the Sunshine Coast. Labor supports the views of the community and the wishes of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council on the issue of Halls Creek and backs the Beerwah East site as the preferred Identified Growth Area on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast. Question 2 The economic future of our hinterland towns is an area of great concern to me as I live and run a small business in Maleny. In the long term I believe the development of the Beerwah East precinct will have a positive effect on the economic growth of Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough – via jobs in construction and the retail and service industries to support the new residents. In the shorter term we have to get our young people working in local jobs. The initiatives mentioned above will go a long way towards this goal. Labor will also invest $40m over four years in a Business Development Fund, offering start up capital for innovative new businesses and creating employment opportunities for locals. Here in Glass House we have a raft of innovative small businesses, employing locals and utilising state of the art technology – MCA Suspension is one example of a world-leading business based right here in Mount Mellum. The third plank in my plan for the economic future of the hinterland towns is tourism. On the campaign trail Labor has announced a $40m boost to the funding of Tourism and Events Queensland, which will have a direct effect on the health of our tourist industry here in the hinterland by advertising our region to emerging international tourist markets and working to draw major events to this destination.
Question 1 The hinterland towns have a unique place in the Sunshine Coast community. There is a need to properly plan for our communities to develop and to be better integrated into the wider Sunshine Coast whilst retaining the things that make them unique. Without such planning our communities risk becoming isolated, not just in terms of infrastructure, but also socially, as our day to day pressures reduce our capacity to connect with each other. I see this as both a social and an environmental issue affecting readers in Glass House. This is why I will focus my attention on ensuring there is a more affordable, accessible and integrated public transport system for the hinterland, including a permanent Hinterland Bus service. This is a relatively small investment to ensure we don’t develop into car-only communities where the most disadvantaged families remain disconnected. Public transport infrastructure is one of the most equitable investments in communities and one of the best ways of building a sustainable Sunshine Coast. A world-class, integrated system that links hinterland towns to the coast and makes it easier, cheaper and faster to travel to Brisbane, is something for which I will strive. Public transport will reduce the amount of cars on our roads, thus reducing congestion, making the daily commute easier, so we can spend more time with our families and in our communities. Fewer cars mean safer roads and a reduction of the cumulative impact of carbon pollution on the environment. Question 2 Supporting hinterland towns needs a multifaceted approach that recognises and supports the points of difference that make the hinterland economies unique and valuable. We live surrounded by such incredible, natural beauty, in communities that display deep connections and spirit, where volunteerism and the rural values of ‘helping out a mate’ still remain strong. Tourism and sustainable agriculture are two key pillars of the hinterland economies that need greater support. I will focus my attention on creating a world-class public transport system as a vital investment to assist these economies, both through a duplication of heavy rail to assist producers getting their products to market more directly, as well as increasing services for visitors to the area. Complimentary to investments in public transport, I will work hard to implement the Greens policy of greater investment in small business, as the backbone of the local economy and the greatest provider of jobs for hinterland towns. For example, we will phase out payroll taxes to reduce costs for employers thus providing them greater scope to employ more staff, which means more jobs for local people and more money in local economies. Creating the right environment for an innovative, startup culture in Queensland is also something for which I am passionate.
For the hinterland towns in the electorate of Glass House it is all about balance. To plan for prosperity, we must consider not just the social and environmental issues, but also the economic challenges facing the hinterland. All aspects are interrelated. It’s important we grow our beautiful and distinct communities, to create jobs, economic growth and social benefit, whilst conserving both the environmental and heritage values of our region - the reason we love living here. Before even considering possible future developments at Beerwah East or Halls Creek, state and local governments should first look at urban growth opportunities in our hinterland communities – maximising existing infrastructure, including a soon-to-be newly duplicated rail line, which puts us just over an hour from Brisbane. I believe this can be achieved while protecting the uniqueness of each town, our rich agricultural land and our precious environment. I will work with council, and through the review of the SEQ Regional Plan, to achieve this. We must also capitalise on our strengths. I have long lobbied to make Beerwah a forestry centre of excellence – offering jobs in plantation, harvesting, milling and more excitingly secondary and tertiary industries such as landscaping materials and construction materials. I have had a number of conversations with Timber Queensland and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council about turning this into a reality. Equally, we need to embrace our agricultural past and get excited about future opportunities. New varieties of traditional crops, new crops and new markets for our produce need to be promoted and I'm keen to assist with that. We are the lucky ones who live in the Hinterland, and there is further opportunity to showcase our home through tourism opportunities. We can do more to promote the region as a leafy alternative to the thousands of visitors who travel to the Coast each year. This can be done in an ecologically sensitive way, embracing our natural landscapes and providing visitor experiences with the majestic backdrop of the Glass House Mountains. In my maiden speech I spoke about the importance of protecting environmental corridors. The electorate of Glass House straddles a vital corridor - north / south between the D'Aguilar and Blackall Ranges and east / west from the Pumicestone Passage to the Great Dividing Range. As Minister for Environment we have purchased a number of properties enhancing these corridors and we can do more. I've worked hard to balance economic, social and environmental needs in Glass House, but more can be done. Only the strong LNP Government has a plan, and as part of that team I can continue to deliver for our region and for you.

Often environmental and social issues blur. However with the environment, two issues stand out: Pumicestone Passage and the interurban break between ourselves and Brisbane. Pumicestone Passage is one of the most important bodies of water in Queensland. Its protection is primary to establishing an environmental safe haven and establishing Caloundra as a region that cares. The inter-urban break ensures a green belt providing lungs to the region. Its protection must be enshrined in the south east Queensland Regional Plan. The Pumicestone Passage should be considered for world heritage listing. Social issues come from isolation, income level and access to services. How do we educate children and equip them for a modern world to deal with modern problems? Education is not only reading, writing and arithmetic. Our world asks for a contribution to society and having the ability to plan, care for ourselves and provide for our future. Education must focus on developing intellectual capacity and skilling children to grow and understand the world. How they cope with stress and strain will impact upon their lives. In a world that changes dramatically, for a child to achieve the best, they need an education system that grows them totally. Perhaps then, the points I raised above may not be issues as they age. The hinterland offers unique growth opportunities but will suffer threats from Caloundra south, the new Kawana health precinct and shopping complex. Failure to recognise the threats that are coming is a major risk. Competition with other regions is important but careful study must be undertaken. People in Beerwah, Landsborough, Mooloolah and Glenview need to choose, firstly what they want their region to become. Do they see themselves developing as Caloundra or perhaps as separate villages? The hinterland offers a unique lifestyle experience but it is possible for boutique commercial and retail industries to develop. There has been discussion of a major development in Beerwah East on land leased for 99 years to Hancock G.V. If the development occurs, how do we accommodate and maintain the current sense and feel of the hinterland? Do we want to keep that? Environmental, social and economic studies will give a proper assessment. Don’t forget Beerwah East, as indeed the whole of Caloundra, is part of the Pumicestone Passage catchment area. Boutique areas exist right across Australia. Look at the Rocks, Darling Harbour and Lygon Street. They attract millions of visitors each year. We might not reach that level but I don’t want the four towns to be a row of houses. It may work elsewhere; it won’t work in the hinterland. Strength comes from planning and community consensus.
Question 1 Recently I conducted a youth forum with local young adults aged from 15 to 18 and their insights were fascinating. Their view is that little or no economic growth is occurring. The only growth they saw was the trees in Simpson Street. Youth unemployment leads our young people to have little hope for the future and results in high suicide rates, higher incidences of crime and often results in our young people moving away from their families and communities. Labor will increase the number of school guidance officers to help guide our young people choose a rewarding career option. We need to reinstate specific employment programs like Skilling Queensland that provided so many local job placements in the past (Labor announcement). From my perspective the logical choice for the next large scale urban development is Beerwah East. An urban development in this locality makes sense as it is close to industry and the present Queensland Rail SEQ urban network and also provides a very significant and long term economic boost for the townships of Beerwah and Landsborough. Furthermore, Queensland Labor believes that local councils are best placed to make the planning decisions for their communities and as such backs the Sunshine Coast Council’s preference for Beerwah East as a future development site. Any development at Halls Creek would surely have an adverse impact on the environmental health of the fragile but pristine Pumicestone Passage and is therefore rejected. Question 2 I would look to establish localised events similar to Noosa Food and Wine festival, Jazz festival etc. or Caloundra Music festival. This would develop the hinterland towns as a unique destination. A firm decision to proceed with Beerwah East will build confidence in the community that can help to inspire new initiatives. I will work with local community groups, the Sunshine Coast Council and the Chamber of Commerce to develop new industries for Beerwah and Landsborough. I have had discussions with the President of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce and believe that there is more than sufficient business acumen to drive these local economic initiatives forward. They need someone who will fight for their future and develop a much more diversified business base. I am committed to fight for local jobs for the local community.
Question 1 Unemployment has been an issue plaguing the Sunshine Coast for a number of years. Specifically increased youth unemployment in our region in recent years has made it a key social issue for the coast. Cuts to the Health portfolio have limited employment options within this industry and with a lack of diversity within the coast’s economy these cuts have not been absorbed by other sectors. We must be creating the conditions within the local economy for job creation to ensure employment and socially sustainable communities. The Greens and I support solutions to reduce youth unemployment – including greater access to training, traineeships and apprenticeships. To do this we must be working with industry and businesses in the private sector to foster a relationship between educational institutions and employers. Stimulating economic innovation will attract more businesses, organisations and investment to the Sunshine Coast: hence expanding our capacity to increase employment opportunities. For those who struggle to find any type of work, unemployment can lead to many issues and it is our responsibility as a community to ensure there are resources available to them to assist with this. Our youth are our future and it is important that they are given every opportunity to become an integral and successful part of our social and economic future. However there is no future without adequate environmental protections. Currently we are seeing the environment come under threat with critically endangered lowland subtropical rainforest, Koala’s and frogs threatened by the proposed Interchange upgrade at Caloundra Road / Steve Irwin Way. I believe that a better outcome can be negotiated for the environment and the local businesses who will be negatively impacted by the current proposal. It is important that the proposal be developed with transparent and adequate public consultation. Government, local residents, business and environmental organisations need to work collaboratively to foster a positive outcome. Question 2 Ensuring that our hinterland communities remain connected to the broader region is essential to the overall success of our region. It is vital that these areas grow sustainably and retain their uniqueness. I strongly believe that improving the public transport system through cheaper, improved buses and expanded heavy rail capacity will ensure these townships remain connected to the broader region. This will improve commerce and quality of life. We can further boost this stimulated activity through creating an environment which encourages more small businesses to blossom. Tax incentives, such as a scrapping the payroll tax is a core Greens policy to assist small business. Practical support for new businesses will allow entrepreneurs the opportunity to grow and become a successful part of Hinterland communities – bringing more tourism to the area increasing the economic diversity of the community.

A Christmas Emergency?
"Sorry sir, you will have to wait. You can't enter the church." The flashing lights of the fire truck, the police and ambulance outside my church, on the day we were about to have our special Christmas service, were real. After parking further down the road, the local policeman told me that no one could enter the building, as there was a suspicious package near the front door. The people who had come earlier were corralled in the hall at the rear of the property, for their safety. Others of us were out on the road watching and wondering. And there it was, on the concrete beside the door; a bright red Christmas wrapped parcel with the words ‘Ho, Ho, Ho’ jumping out. I thanked the policeman for what he was doing with this suspicious parcel. He assured me this was an appropriate way to handle the situation for everyone's safety. It was just a few days after the Martin Place siege, and houses of worship, both Muslim and Christian, could be targets as a result.

JANUARY 21 2015
Then the fireman in his yellow protective gear and face mask on his helmet moved behind the brick wall. This should prove interesting, I thought. He gingerly put one arm around the corner, and, using a long probe, began opening the wrapping paper. First touch, nothing! Then on the second careful move he peeled back some of the paper. Eventually it happened. The contents were exposed; a cardboard cross made from an old carton, covered with about a hundred artificial flowers. The fireman took off his helmet, smiled, and then wiped his brow in relief. Then everyone stepped back into the spirit of the day, and the emergency services went off to more mundane duties. I do not know who made or placed this carefully crafted cross on our doorstep. But it was used that day as the centrepiece of our Christmas program. I would like to thank the creator of this lovely and exciting gift, and the emergency crews.

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Pets and wildlife
Australia has one of the highest incidences of pet ownership in the world, with 36% of households owning a dog and 23% owning a cat. Our pets are valued members of the family, providing companionship and even therapy. Unfortunately, cats and dogs are among the biggest threats to our wildlife, especially in urban areas. Each pet cat, if allowed to wander, has been estimated to kill an average of 16 mammals, eight birds and eight reptiles per year. Dogs attack or maul many small mammals and are one of the main causes of koala deaths and injuries. You can ensure your pets live in harmony with the local wildlife, firstly by restraining them at night, or when wildlife enters your backyard. It is easy to train dogs, and even cats, not to bother wildlife. Cats can be confined to areas close to the house or even indoors. Alternatively, a bell on the cat’s collar can warn wildlife of their approach. Provide pet-free areas in your garden where wildlife feel secure, with rocks, hollow logs or mulch in which small animals can hide, dense shrubs, or trees that cats cannot climb. Desex your pets, which ensures that they do not breed with feral animals, and also decreases their inclination to roam. Finally, if your pet attacks a wild animal, retrieve your pet quickly, and confine it away from the animal. Contact wildlife carers and follow their instructions carefully. Injured animals may try to defend themselves, so be careful. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? For more information on GMAN activities and nursery sales please call Cliff (5438 7118) or Gwen (5493 0029). www.gman-inc.com.au

Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc. We care our environment Avid gardener andabout owner of Professional Weeds Solution Property assessments and Landowner grants
Last year MRWL did 72 assessments around the coast which includes a mini report. These have been extremely successful to help landowners on big and small properties identify their weeds and native trees and to help with ideas of revegetation, vegetable growing, ponds etc. Native plants lists are also done to help landowners pick from a selection of local native plants for their gardens, some of which bring in butterflies, bees and birds. If you would like an assessment done please ring Jan on 0407 641 327 or the office on 5494 5074 to book in. The cost is $60.00 for this service which helps with petrol and time, as we have no funding to do these. Also, Sunshine Coast Council Landowner grants are now open for Expressions of Interest. If you would like some help preparing your application please contact Jan or the MRWL office.

The historical value of the forest is irreplaceable with large 300 year old habitat trees and trees with cross-saw marks in them reminding us of the timber getters in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. A to Z of Trades and Services Talkin' Trades with Ian Booth of Complete Tank Services is that inside the walls of your concrete water tank there is steel reinforcing, and the only way steel can expand when encased in concrete is to make cracks. What sets your business apart from others that may offer a similar service? It’s now quite common to inspect water tanks when buying and selling property. A small problem fixed in the early stages is a lot better than waiting for it to turn into an expensive repair. I can also repair concrete metal tanks cheaper than you can buy another one. Contact Ian of Complete Tank Maintenance on 0403 187 517 or 3204 4910 for tank cleaning, tank repairs, tin and concreting and leaf guard protection, plus heaps more.
What type of service do you offer? I am a former water tank builder and business owner of Complete Tank Maintenance, offering every aspect of tank maintenance and water tank cleaning. Because I have built water tanks I know what to look for when cleaning your water tank, and I can provide a free expert inspection of your tank. Why should readers give you a call? It amazes me the amount of tanks I see that have problems and are deteriorating. Your water tank is an investment. Have you priced one to see how much they are worth now? I see a lot of tanks with cracks and white calcium marks, and people don’t realise how damaging they are to your water tank. They think the cracks are not leaking much water but what they don’t realise

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Beerwah Ladies Golf Club
Contributed by Sue Greentree A warm welcome back to the ladies playing at the Beerwah Golf Club. No pun intended. It was a hot start to our first game back after the Christmas break and 47 of our loyal braved the heat wave last Thursday. We played a Single Stableford for a Club voucher and with such a small field only two divisions competed. The results of Division 1 were winner Heather Henn with 33pts, runner-up Lorraine McCamley with 32pts. The results of Division 2 were: winner Elizabeth Gemmell with 38pts, runner-up Sue Wood with 31pts. NTP’s were Andrea Campbell No:5; Pat Plowman No: 16 and Noelene Annakin No:18. The ball run-down went to 28pts. Congratulations to all the winners and next week’s competition will be a Single Par.

Ladies Get Active
Contributed by Joyce Newton The Maleny Swimming Club, in conjunction with Steve Smith Coach / Manager of the Maleny Centenary Pool, are offering the ladies in our community a FREE a eight week ‘Get Active Development Program’ to encourage ladies to get fit and get active by getting involved with aquatic activities. The Get Active Development Program is for ladies only and runs three days per week over the eight weeks. The program will assist ladies in stroke correction, learn to swim, Aqua Aerobics, fun and fitness. The Get Active Development Program will commence on Monday, February 3, and continues every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 8.30am to 9.30am. This is perfect for those ladies dropping children off at school. Bookings are essential, as there are limited places, so please contact Steve Smith on 5494 2589 or drop into the pool to secure your booking. The Queensland Government provided nearly $8,000 to the Maleny Swimming Club for the ‘Get Active Program’ and necessary pool equipment to support the program in a Get Playing grant to increase Queenslanders’ participation in sport and recreation activities.

BeeGees Soccer Club prepares for 2015 This season BeeGees have a new Senior Men’s Coach. Johnny Boyle has taken over from last season’s Senior Men’s Coach Shaun Decourcy, who has had to leave for personal reasons. We would like to thank Shaun and his team of David Payne and Gavin Thistlethwaite for their efforts last season with limited squad numbers. We saw some improvement from the previous season and we are confident that Johnny Boyle and his back room staff can improve us again this season, with the addition of a few players. Johnny’s love of football began at a young age, and he’s looking forward to his new role with the club. “I arrived in Australia from bonny Scotland in February 2003, married to Sharon, and have two sons, Gary and Tony,” said Johnny. “Always been a football mad player and fan since I was born. “When a serious condition hit me, I had to give

up playing, and decided to move into coaching, where I’ve have coached from Under 5’s to senior’s. “Previous clubs I have coached over the last five years include Caloundra and Kawana, and when Paul asked me to consider coming to BeeGees, I jumped at the chance. “It is a very well-run club with very loyal players and a great committee. “I am looking forward to the challenge ahead, and hope the community comes along and gives us a great deal of support, " he said. The senior men’s team has already started training each Tuesday and Thursday at 6.30pm and any new players interested in joining the team are welcome to come along. The club is still looking for a Senior Ladies Coach and Junior Coaches. Please contact Paul Hughes (President) on email Beegeespresident@bigpond. com if you are interested in coaching or doing coaching licences.
