A
nyone familiar with the original version of the television series ‘Batman' would have probably heard that the original actor who played ‘Batman’, Adam West, passed away recently. So it seemed rather fitting that in that week we already had a couple of bat related stories planned. When Phil Thamm, the Chairman of the Lutheran Church at Witta, asked if we would be interested in a story about bats in their belfry, the possible headline alone piqued our interest. This was then followed up by the announcement that those being recognised in the Queen's Honours List this year included our local renowned bat expert Les Hall. With both the State and Local Government budgets being announced last week, we have chosen to focus this week on the Council Budget and how it will directly impact on the residents of Division 1 and Division 5. And once again we have received plenty of letters (more than we could fit into the two pages) covering a broad range of topics. It is great to see new writers sending in their views! Regards,

Maleny weather covered again With the sad passing of local Patrick Stacy in September 2016, Maleny lost its treasured weatherman and the weather station which he had been operating since Pat and wife Kay had moved to Maleny in the 1980s. As a consequence, the Maleny Weather website, which they freely ran to keep locals updated on all things meteorological, sits idle – but still maintaining an amazing repository of historical data and records. Relatively recent Maleny resident Alan Still hopes that his newly-developed weather website ‘Maleny Weather’ (www.malenywx.com) will fill the breach. Before moving to Maleny in 2015, Alan ran a weather station at Elimbah for many years. Coming from an accounting, auditing, banking and major project management background, Alan has a knack for systems, databases and information organisation. “I consider it to be a modern weather website. The home page is very comprehensive with interactive graphs, downloadable data and expandable maps,” he said. “The data comes from not only my personal weather station but also includes forecasts from BoM, weather radar, lightning map, current Queensland weather warnings and, for those who like something different, interactive air traffic radar traffic and marine traffic. “In addition my computer produces a daily forecast specifically for Maleny using weather modelling software called WXSIM.

They are currently working on inputting years of Patrick’s hand written journals detailing temperature, rain, wind gust and barometer records to expand upon the historical aspects of the website. “I hope that my new website will provide the community with up to date information on the weather locally, as well as much, much more,” Alan said. Maleny local receives Queen’s honour
By Greg Brown
Maleny’s wildlife expert Les Hall isn’t one to seek the limelight. Much like his favourite mammals – bats – Les is happiest working away quietly just doing his thing. Except the Queen of England thinks otherwise, and has bestowed him with an Order of Australia Medal – making him now officially Dr Les Hall (AM). For over 50 years, Les has spent his life studying and researching Australian native wildlife. Born in northern New South Wales, Les was instilled with a love of birds by his father. Les soon shifted into studying bats, as an extension of his love for caving, when working for the CSIRO Division of Wildlife Research in the 1960s and 70s. There was no looking back for Les. He began bat banding in 1962 and has supervised numerous banding operations for research projects. In 1974 he joined the University of Queensland, in the Department of Anatomy and later the Department of Veterinary Anatomy. This gave him the opportunity to further his interest in bats (and other native mammals) and he gained his PhD in 1988 with a thesis on bandicoots. He wrote the very first papers describing the embryology and early development of the Platypus and the early growth of the Echidna. In fact, the information and sketches found at the Platypus viewing platform at the Maleny Precinct are his.

Les’s list of lifetime achievements is longer than most people’s driveways. He has published over 200 articles, written four books and presented at numerous national and international conferences and forums. He’s a member and advisor on many eminent groups and bodies, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Bat Conservation International. Locally, Les contributes as Vice-President and Director, Green Hills Fund Maleny, a member of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Management Committee and is an advisor on flying fox issues for the Sunshine Coast Council. Even a species of bat – the Cape York Free-Tailed Bat (Mormopterus halli) – was named in his honour. Asked how he feels about being chosen for the AM, he is typically reserved. “It was a complete surprise to me," he said. “I’m chuffed and honoured to be considered in the same company as so many esteemed past Order of Australia Medal recipients... including some of my most admired colleagues.”

Bats in the belfry Holy Bat Camp, Robin ... there’s something in the roof! In a week where the world lost the original Batman (Adam West), Maleny steps into the breach with their own version... bat expert (or chiropterologist), Les Hall. Heeding the call from Phil Thamm at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Witta, Les ventured out to the Witta Road chapel to investigate a colony of bats that had been discovered in the roof of the building. According to Phil, the first they knew of the bats was about six or so weeks ago, when what looked like dirt was found on the floor of the church against a wall where there was a gap in the ceiling. “We thought it was just birds nesting in the roof, so I thought I’d look up into the roof cavity to see ... and there were lots of what looked like mouse droppings,” said Phil. “Then I shone the torch onto the rafters and looking back at me were dozens of tiny bats. “One of our parishioners is related to Greg
By Greg Brown Czechura, a wildlife expert with the Queensland Museum (and from Maleny), who put us in touch with Les... from North Maleny.” Last week, Les met with some of the congregation at the church to see what was going on in their roof. To the delight of the dozen or so there, Les – who is no spring chicken – scaled the extension ladder, assisted by Ron Sharp, and disappeared into the roof. Minutes later, he reappeared with a cloth bag, shimmied down the ladder and carefully took out a small dark brown furry object –which, when opening its dainty mouth, exposed a set of teeth more suited to a man-eating Doberman than an insect-eating microbat. “It’s a Gould’s Wattle Bat, and they’re totally harmless,” Les explained to the group. “They eat small nocturnal flying insects like moths and beetles. And studies have shown that no Australian microbat species carries any diseases dangerous to humans.” Les discovered a colony of 50-60 bats huddled together around rafters in the peak of the corrugated iron roof. “They’ve probably been there for a while, I’d say, from the size of the pile of droppings.” Les explained that, during winter, the colony could remain in the roof for a week or so without having to venture out to feed. “But when they do, they could be feeding over a range of more than 10 kilometres from the church. “And with their voracious appetite for insects,
they perform a vital function in the ecosystem and an honourable service to us by controlling pests like mosquitoes, fruit-eating moths and lawn beetles,” he said. “In fact, in the US pecan nut farmers have rows of bat boxes to attract bats which then keep the pest moths in check, meaning that they don’t have to spray chemicals.” According to Les, the Gould’s Wattle Bat is a fairly common species, which would be living in many houses and sheds in the district. Les volunteered to keep an eye on the new members of the Lutheran ‘flock’ and to come back and clean out the mound of bat droppings... which he says makes extremely good fertiliser. As for what to do about the bats in the belfry, Phil says that the church will have a think about it. “As Les explained, our roof is a perfect spot for them to roost, and as they can squeeze in through the smallest cracks, it’ll be almost impossible to keep them out. Maybe it’s a case of live and let live... and cleaning up a couple of times a year.”

Stand Alone - Kody, Connor and Mitch
College, ‘Stand Alone’ (Kody Thomas-Roby, Mitch Markham and Connor Flanagan) wowed judges with their powerful, energetic performance as they performed their original song ‘The Reaper’. Both judges were incredibly impressed with the trio’s stage presence and the song and suggested that the group has a bright future. The group won $3,000 dollars for Beerwah High as well as $1,000 dollars worth of gift cards for themselves. The group has just also secured a spot at the Maleny Music Festival which should allow them to find a larger audience. Stand Alone’s EP, ‘Catering to Madmen’, is available now on iTunes and Amazon.
Pests targeted in council operations Pest weeds and animals were a focus of last Thursday’s ordinary meeting of Sunshine Coast Council. Reports were presented outlining a pest survey and surveillance program on private lands for the 2017/18 financial year, as well as for feral animal prevention and control. The survey program will target specific pest plants such as groundsel bush, rat’s tail grasses, parthenium and salvinia, where council officers will confirm the presence, absence, extent and/or magnitude of certain pest plants on private lands. The work also includes monitoring compliance activities and measures that prevent and/or control them. By endorsing the program, council authorises its officers to be able to enter private lands without the owner’s consent.

To undertake the program, a budget of almost $380,000 is required, with 3.5 full time person equivalents working on the ground over the year. The feral animal prevention and control program is similar, but targets specific feral animals, like wild dogs, feral pigs, feral goats, feral cats, feral deer, European foxes, European rabbits and Indian Myna Birds. Through this program, council offers assistance in training, advice and on-ground support to occupiers of properties to assist them with feral animals, which includes trapping and baiting programs. Managing feral animals is a major undertaking, involving seven full time equivalent staff and a budget allocation of over $960,000.
When it’s time to say goodbye When you lose someone, the event of a death within a family is a time of intensified emotion and often a surreal experience. We all grieve in many different ways when the experience of death comes into our lives. As an Independent Funeral Celebrant I am able to assist the family in planning all aspects for a funeral. This can be held at any place the family chooses. The family home, beaches, parks, function centres and of course chapels and churches. My role as a celebrant is to meet with you, and help choose the music, write the eulogy, suggest poetry and readings, design the order of service, and liaise with the Funeral Director with regards to any cultural or spiritual preferences. In conjunction with the Funeral Director, it is the celebrant’s responsibility to ensure that the family’s wishes are followed. However this also involves creating and conducting a ceremony that will assist in a healthy grieving process. I have chosen this vocation after completing my diploma in counselling, focusing on grief and loss, and other challenging situations.

Ceremony honours ancient forest
Contributed by Carolita Fuentes, Friends of Steve Irwin Way Forest Thank you so much to all those who attended this significant community gathering on full moon Saturday, June 10, at the entrance to the new Mooloolah National Park. It was a powerful time of deep connection with fellow forest defenders where new friendships and collaborations were also forged. I am deeply grateful to those who worked tirelessly with me to organise this event, namely Jan Kesby, Gary Lawler, Mooloolah Dhdunga Kabi Kabi senior law woman Bridgette Chilly Davis, and Mariko McConnell, with special thanks to Uncle Alan C Parsons, Christopher Henderson and Ana Leigh for your invaluable contribution. A huge congratulations also to everyone who contributed to the success in securing the National Park status for the remaining 744 hectares of forest. We received overwhelming encouragement from across the globe and the sentiments resonated amongst people of all ages and walks of life. We are grateful for having had the opportunity to have paid our heartfelt respects to the over 400-year-old Blackbutt elders which are due to be felled in the coming days and to acknowledge the loss of between six to eight hectares of natural habitat in place of the upgraded road interchange. We are currently in discussions with Department of Transport and Main Roads to preserve part of the felled trees in a memorial seating area across the road at Jowarra Park rest area, along with a memorial plaque honouring the history, as well as a display cabinet housing a cross section of the base of the tree showing the age rings.

In handing down its record $722 million dollar Annual Budget, the Sunshine Coast Council last week announced a general rate increase of 2.3% as well as a raft of fees and levy increases, resulting in what they say equates to a $52 increase in the rates bill for most ratepayers. Mayor Mark Jamieson said council’s record $722 million budget – including $232 million for capital works – focused on delivering Australia’s leading healthy, smart and creative region. “Our commitment to our residents is to focus on protecting and enhancing our environment, building a strong community and growing the economy – and that is what we are doing,” Mayor Jamieson said. The budget includes $106 million to maintain, renew and replace roads, pathways and stormwater assets and $70 million towards maintaining, renewing and replacing council’s many parks, gardens and sporting facilities. Libraries, gallery and community facilities will receive $37 million. Council will also invest $30 million in maintaining programs and services to support local business and industry to grow, encourage new investment to generate more jobs, attract major events and maintain holiday parks. Mayor Jamieson said general rates for the majority of ratepayers would increase by $28 to $1,166 and the cost to collect a 240 litre wheelie bin would increase by $4 to $280. The combined increase equates to 2.3%. Other increased payments include the Environment Levy by $2, the Transport Levy by $15 and the Heritage Levy by $3 – a combined annual increase of $20. Mayor Jamieson said council would also continue
its commitment to the region’s “game changing” projects. “Work will continue on the Maroochydore City Centre and council will invest $62 million in the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project,” Mayor Jamieson said. Community and Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council would invest more than $32 million in conservation land, maintaining beaches, foreshores, bushland and waterways and supporting environmental volunteers. “The Environment Levy will increase by $2 to $72 per annum and will go towards buying, protecting, enhancing and managing environmentally significant land and a host of other important local conservation programs,” Cr McKay said. Maintaining the vitality of our communities was also a focus in council’s budget, and they will be investing $7.3 million on major community venues and community halls, and spending $21 million on libraries, including $2 million for library resources and digital services and $1.8 million for education and literacy programs. This budget, the Tourism and Major Events Levy – paid by 10% of ratepayers – has increased by 4.6%. The $6.1 million raised by the levy will be divided between Visit Sunshine Coast ($3.8 million) and council’s major event sponsorship program ($2.3 million). Transport, The Arts and Heritage Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski the Heritage Levy, which will increase by $3 to $11 and raise $1.5 million, enables council to work with the community to deliver the region’s Heritage Plan. “The proceeds from the Heritage Levy will be invested in interpreting and promoting the

Delivering the future in Division 1 region’s cultural heritage profile by also making it accessible through heritage walks and trails, short films and interpretive experiences at heritage sites,” Cr Baberowski said. Councillor Baberowski also said the $15 increase in the annual Transport Levy (to $42) would go directly towards building a Transport Futures Fund to focus on the Sunshine Coast Light Rail Project. Local Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Greg Rogerson said council had committed to reducing waste going into landfills by continuing a range of incentives. “Residents will continue to be able to discard up to three mattresses each year at no charge at council’s waste management and resource recovery facilities,” Cr Rogerson said. “They can also dispose of unwanted fridges, gas bottles, e-waste, scrap metals, including whitegoods, domestic oil, pesticides and other recyclables, at no cost.”
At a glance: Council’s $722 million budget includes: • $106 million to maintain, renew and replace roads, pathways and stormwater assets • $70 million to maintain, renew and replace council’s many parks, gardens and sporting facilities • $37 million for libraries, galleries and community facilities • $30 million for economic initiatives, including major events and holiday parks • $32 million for preserving and enhancing the region’s environmental assets, including beach, foreshore and bushland conservation projects and clean energy projects The $237 million capital works program includes: • $59 million on transportation and stormwater projects • $18 million for the road reseal and rehabilitation program • $17 million on waste management infrastructure • $12 million on community and sporting facilities • $9 million on parks and gardens, cemeteries and beach accesses • $3 million on environmental assets and coast, canals and waterways • $2 million on aerodrome and holiday parks
www.gcnews.com.au
Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski is confident that Sunshine Coast Council’s 2017/18 budget strikes the right balance between both coastal and Hinterland communities. “Maintaining current assets to a high standard and building new infrastructure, which continues to grow a strong community, are key priorities and are reflected in the coming year’s budget,” said Cr Baberowski. “An ongoing key safety priority is the staged widening and sealing of Pikes Road, Glass House Mountains ($550,000). This project will significantly upgrade road functionality by increasing lane widths in both directions. “We’ll be investing a further $400,000 into the continued staged implementation of the Glass House District Recreation Park master plan, which is set to become an exceptional new District Park for our part of the Sunshine Coast.” The Beerwah pool and skate park in Roberts Road
will receive an additional $265,000 towards the next stage of design and construction of a sealed car park. Local Division 1 highlights for the 2017/18 budget include: • $550,000 to widen Pikes Road, Glass House Mountains • $265,000 to upgrade the Beerwah Sportsground car park • $180,000 for asset renewal at Pioneer Park, Landsborough • $150,000 towards the Landsborough Place Making Master Plan • $100,000 to upgrade the Beerwah Aquatic Centre • $100,000 for detail design and construction at Turner Street, Beerwah • $100,000 to review car parking and traffic at Reed Street, Glass House Mountains • $58,000 for renewal works at Page Park, Glass House Mountains.
Delivering the future for Division 5 According to Division 1 Councillor Jenny McKay, managing the budget process for one of the largest divisions on the Sunshine Coast means working hard to get the balance right rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. “Some of the most valuable projects in this year’s budget don’t need a huge price tag, but they deliver practical solutions for Hinterland residents and it’s great to see this year’s budget packed with a number of local projects alongside funding for major projects which will shape our region for years to come,” said Cr McKay. Funding for local major projects within Division 5 includes $500,000 to complete the missing section of path on the Maleny-Montville Road footpath, $225,000 for the Main Street Streetscape project in Montville, $70,000 to assist in funding footpaths and fences at Pattemore House and $120,000 for the second stage of the Maleny Library upgrade. “In addition to these major projects, we are also investing $152,000 in local parks and gardens including a playground renewal project in Cook Park in Maleny and upgrades to the recreational
space and car park at Russell Family Park in Montville,” said Cr McKay. Local Division 5 highlights for the 2017/18 budget include: • $500,000 to complete the missing section of footpath on southern side of Maleny-Montville Road • $450,000 to construct a new car park at Russell Family Park, Montville • $225,000 to streetscape Main Street, Montville • $120,000 for detailed design for Maleny Library extension • $58,000 for major maintenance and upgrade of Coral Street Boardwalk, Maleny • $50,000 to design and construct the playground at Russell Family Park, Montville • $50,000 to upgrade and seal a section of Perrins Road, Diamond Valley • $35,000 to design and construct the road widening for a section of Diamond Valley Road, Diamond Valley • $19,000 to replace 93 lineal metres of concrete pathway along the southern side of Cedar Street, Maleny.

Camp Quality fundraiser Helping kids with cancer is a cause close to many people’s hearts and recently Lynda Burgess, members of the Maleny Senior Citizens group and local Lorraine Lea Stylist Jodi HamlynHarris joined forces to throw a Party for Kids with Cancer linen party to raise money for Camp Quality. The weather was cold and rainy, but it was toasty and warm inside the Maleny Community Centre Verandah Room where Jodi showed Lorraine Lea’s beautiful range of quilt covers, blankets, pillows, towels and cushions. Lynda donated all of her Host Credits of $235 and this was matched by Jodi as a donation from the profits she made from the party. There was also a raffle and extra money donated from the sale of Jodi’s ex-display linen to give a total donation of $585. Lynda, who is President of Maleny and District Seniors, said, “I was really happy to see so many Maleny Seniors members come out in the bad weather and I am really excited about how much we raised for Camp Quality in just an hour and a half.” Jodi said, “I am so proud to work for a company that is so community-minded and makes such an effort to help these kids every year. And it is beautiful hosts like Lynda who really help us make a difference.” So far in June, Jodi’s Linenology team have

Dog Show results and more good news
Domestic violence awareness fundraising concert A community benefit concert was held recently at the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church with $850 being raised and donated to Sonshine Sanctuary Women’s Refuge on the Sunshine Coast. Entertainment included local talent as well as the Caboolture Community Choir, along with guest speakers from UnitingCare and The Women's Refuge who talked about the issue of domestic and family violence in the community. Thanks also to the local businesses in Beerwah who donated goods for lucky door prizes. The Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Community Church was proud to sponsor the event.

Bushfire-proofing planned The cooler months are shaping up as a crucial time for Sunshine Coast firefighters in their efforts to prepare the region for bushfire season. Rural Fire Service (RFS) Caloundra Area Director Gary Seaman has signalled the next two months as vital for bushfire mitigation activities in the Hinterland and along the Coast. Recent wet weather has delayed a number of planned hazard reduction burns, leaving firefighters with a limited window of opportunity to finish their work before bushfire season kicks off in August. “Parts of the Sunshine Coast are still too wet and green from recent rainfall to allow
firefighters and partner agencies to conduct planned hazard reduction burns,” Mr Seaman said. “The RFS and our partner agencies need a solid run of dry and stable weather conditions to do our work. “Weather permitting, we will be out in force between now and August conducting burns in priority locations including Montville and Peachester. “It means residents in these locations may begin to notice smoke in the air, so they should close their windows and doors and keep their medications close by if they suffer from a respiratory condition.”
Contributed by Helen Weil Thank you to all who attended our Sunshine Coast Kennel Club Dog Shows held in May at the Beerwah Sportsground. The outcome was very successful with our only downside being some showers of rain on Friday evening. But even damp exhibitors and spectators got in and enjoyed the events over the weekend. One generous sponsor was Black Hawk dog food and another Beerwah Feed and Fodder with a special gift pack for the puppy. This sponsorship was greatly appreciated. So what is the “more good news”? It is success with grant applications. In Round 91 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, the kennel club has a funding grant of $9,750 to line, insulate and paint the interior of their clubroom. This is a much needed upgrade to the inside of the room and will be completed well before our 50th year celebration in 2019. The other success is the Sunshine Coast Council round of Major Grants where the kennel club was successful in obtaining $5,500 to fit a motorised retractable door and to concrete the area under the verandah adjacent to the clubroom. The new door will replace a currently awkward tilt door and the new concrete will be a blessing when working outside the clubroom on show days. All of these small projects will be completed in the near future, bringing the room up to a very high standard of presentation and useability as a meeting venue.

Bulldogs turn pink
The Beerwah Bulldogs Rugby League Club is hosting the fifth annual Pink Day, a familyfriendly day, on Saturday July 8 to raise much needed funds and awareness for Breast Cancer Network Australia. The day will include plenty of great footy, food and beverages, arts and crafts, raffles and auctions, stellar entertainment, and much, much more. This event is a great opportunity for the club to open its doors to the community and raise vital awareness for the families that are affected by a breast cancer diagnosis each and every day. The event is also a way for us to acknowledge the important role that women play within grassroots footy. The big day is set to kick off from 1pm with the seven footy games being played. The two Under 18s sides will play at 1.30pm, then there will be a Division 2 Men’s game and the Women’s game will start at 3pm, then you can stick around for the Masters men at 4.30pm, Division 2 Men’s at 5.30pm and Division 1 Men’s at 7pm.
Signs of elder abuse
Super Strawberry time!
Contributed by Constable Susan Lowndes (Beerwah Police) Last Thursday, June 15, was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and Sunshine Coast police are encouraging the community to be aware of this issue and report associated offences. Signs of elder abuse can be many and varied, however some behaviours which may indicate that the person is a victim of such abuse can include any sudden or radical change in behaviour, such as fear of someone close to them, irritability, shaking, trembling or crying, depression or social withdrawal, talk of suicide or a lack of interest in getting involved in their usual interests. Other signs could be change in sleeping patterns or eating habits, presenting as helpless, hopeless or sad or worry or anxiety for no obvious reason. Or you begin to notice if the person begins to give contradictory statements not associated with mental confusion, or a reluctance to talk openly or deferring to another person to speak on their behalf. You may also notice a change in behaviour of a family member, friend or carer who is committing elder abuse. They may start making excuses to justify their abuse. If you suspect someone you know is experiencing elder abuse, don’t wait for proof, call the Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 651 192, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. This helpline also offers free anonymous and confidential advice for anyone experiencing elder abuse or who suspects someone they know may be experiencing elder abuse. For more information visit www.communities.qld. gov.au/campaign/theres-no-excuse-elder-abuse.
This shield full of Glasshouse Country history (Charity Sports Super Strawberry champions since 1996) is a reminder that Super Strawberry time is here, and the 2017 competition starts soon. In 2016 we introduced an extra class, 'Most Unusual Strawberry', which generated a lot of interest and some amazing entries. That will continue for 2017, so you can search for the biggest fruit AND anything unusual or interesting. As usual there will be eight weekly rounds, with Round 1 closing on Friday July 7. Bring entries to Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-operative any time during the week, but before 4pm each Friday. Heather has kindly agreed to be the steward again this year, and she will weigh and record entries. Winners will be announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival (community fund-raiser for Cancer Council Qld) on Saturday August 26. Thanks to Beerwah Hotel for sponsoring the competition again, and to the Co-op for their support.
Want to play cards? Come along to the Thursday evening cards at Club Glass House where an enjoyable time is spent playing either Canasta or 500. Have your name in before the 7pm start. The gold coin cost includes a cuppa. Club Glass House is located at 10 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains.

Winter is a great time to kick start your fitness goals! Get ahead of the pack this June and reach new heights with your health and fitness goals this winter at Beerwah’s Plus Fitness 24/7. With the drop in temperature it can be really hard to stay on track with your fitness goals, as people tend to lack motivation, rug up more and seek out the comfort of eating wintery foods. All of these factors can contribute to a slow increase in weight gain and a general feeling of overall sluggishness. During the winter months, people also tend to pick up more colds and flu’s, and the shorter days and chilly weather can also contribute along with other factors to a decrease in our overall mood. This is why it is vitally important to keep active during the winter months and to keep your metabolism fast and active. With regular exercise you’ll see a spring in your step, excess weight can be kept off and stress levels can be reduced.

The kids are the real winners in this year’s Pie of Origin Queensland-based Beefy’s is once again firing up the ovens in preparation for the Pie of Origin. It’s an annual contest that sees the bakery go head to head with Glenorie Bakery in New South Wales to out-bake and out-sell pies during the State of Origin series, and it all happens in the name of charity. Mark Hobbs from Beefy’s said one dollar from every Beefy’s Big Queenslander Pie purchased during the State of Origin series will be donated to Brisbane’s Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. Funds raised by Glenorie Bakery will go to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

This is the third year running that Beefy’s has been involved in the fundraising challenge. Last year Beefy’s raised $17,000 for the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. This year they are aiming even higher with a target of $20,000. It seems that even the local pollies for the areas were keen to show their support for the ‘Pie of Origin’ charity contest. Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace donned a Maroons scarf and took on NSW Federal Member Julian Leeser in an exchange of lively speeches in Parliament. Mr Wallace said, “You’re only as good as your last game, and Queensland has won the last two Pie of Origins – we are now going for three in a row.”

Local plants for local gardens
With Spencer and Karen Shaw Want to add colour and beauty to your garden? Well here are a few great local natives that will not only do that, but also provide habitat for our native fauna and help preserve our local biodiversity in your own backyard! Some of the great local natives we have available now at Forest Heart include: Acacia bakeri – Marblewood is unusual among wattles in that it’s a slow growing rainforest tree. Beautiful weeping foliage makes this an outstanding small to medium sized tree. Elaeocarpus eumundi – Eumundi Quandong is well known for its form and exceptional foliage. Dodonaea viscosa cuneata – Cut Leaf Hop Bush is fast growing and longlasting with red to orange dry fruit that cover the bush and make for a colourful shrub to two metres. Aphanopetalum resinosum – Gum Vine is a vine with very glossy foliage (almost like a coat of varnish) and bunches of white flowers, great for climbing a fence, trellis or pergola or even as a groundcover. These are just a small sample of our great range of local beauties. For knowledge and ideas, we have a great range of native plant and animal books, we stock Hollow Log Homes Nest Boxes, we carry the best tree guards, mulch mats and more. Finally, come and chat with our great staff (us of course!) for planting advice and ID services.
Environment Mary Cairncross to be expanded
The significant rainforest habitat at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny will be protected, enhanced and expanded through the latest addition to Sunshine Coast Council’s Environment Levy Land Acquisition Program. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the 26.8 hectare property, located on the northeastern boundary of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, would connect and expand the existing ecological networks in the area. “This acquisition demonstrates council’s ongoing commitment to protecting and enhancing our natural environment,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Together with our recent purchase at Burgess Avenue, also adjoining Mary Cairncross, this property will provide opportunities for future rehabilitation and offsetting activities to enhance habitat and landscape connectivity. “I’m pleased this additional 26.8 hectares will be added to our conservation estate, and I look forward to seeing this land enhanced over the coming years.” Since the Environment Levy began in the early 1990s, Sunshine Coast Council has purchased almost 3000 hectares of land for conservation. Environment Portfolio and Divisional Councillor Jenny McKay said the property was a fantastic addition to the Sunshine Coast’s existing network of 584 environmental network reserves. “This purchase delivers excellent environmental outcomes,” Cr McKay said. “In protecting our magnificent habitat at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and expanding an important conservation corridor, we’re also protecting some of the headwaters of the Mary River catchment.”
Mayor Mark Jamieson and Cr Jenny McKay announce the new Environment Levy purchase with council staff Dave Moore and Bill Haddrill, Mary Cairncross Advisory Board representative Kim Walker and local volunteer Owen Sharwood at the Mary Cairncross Rainforest Discover Centre

As more and more natural bush and wetland disappears under the ever expanding growth of human populations, wildlife-human interactions, both positive and negative, become ever more frequent. As food and nesting resources become scarcer, our vegetable gardens and fruit trees become alternative resources for adaptable birds, possums, bandicoots and fruit bats. Devoted avian parents, such as magpies, plovers or butcherbirds, divebomb walkers or cyclists who get too close to their nests. Brush turkeys test the patience of gardeners by creating impressive nests from leaves and branches in inconvenient spots. With the winter chill upon us, warm sunny patios or even cosy roof spaces become tempting for snakes seeking to thermoregulate. Lizards, such as blue-tongued skinks or water dragons, often choose the edges of swimming pools to warm up. Chook pens attract snakes and goannas who love eggs (or the occasional chicken), and also dingos and wild dogs. There are some easy solutions if these are considered problems. Provide resources away from your house or vegie garden, such as native trees and shrubs, water sources, and nest boxes. Keep the grass round the house short to deter snakes, and remove piles of leaves, rubbish, and wood. Protect domestic animals using predator proof fences, or cages, and keep pets inside at night. Net vegetables or fruit trees with wildlife-friendly shade cloth or netting. Galvanized iron collars round the trunk of trees stop possums climbing, while regular applications of blood and bone also deter possums who do not like the odour. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? Living - Arts Photography Corner with U3A Beerwah Grafx Group
Picture of the Month by Graeme Lean This photograph was taken on a dull cold day, at the Rideau Canal in Ottawa when walking with a friend. The canal is a popular place for the locals to skate. The Rideau Canal has a rich heritage with its dams and lochs, offering a wide variety of water sports in the summer months and skating in winter along its length. At 7.8 kms long it is the world’s longest skating rink. Built in 1832 for military reasons, there are many stories to tell.

Open Studio Trail - June with Co-ordinator Judi Parkinson
Eight local artists will open their six studio/galleries on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25. Come and visit Michele Deveze, Annie McIntosh, The McCotterMusk Studio, Christine Elcoate, Chris Blake, Belinda Stanton and our Feature Artist Megan Bice. Megan has a background in commercial art and these early experiences have strengthened the composition elements in her work.
Supporting artists and connecting communities
She also likes to experiment with textural effects and glazing to create painterly finishes which translate everyday images into personal expressions of the world we live in. The June Trail runs from Peachester and Landsborough, to Maleny, Flaxton and Nambour. Any time is always the perfect time to visit the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and surrounds for a beautiful drive, and June brings the added delight of meeting our artists in their warm studios. Artists will be demonstrating their techniques and various mediums. All are experienced and professional producers of unique artworks in printmaking, pastels, watercolours, acrylics, oils, ceramics, fabric art, to name a few. Artworks are for sale and please feel free to ask our artists about that special commissioned artwork you would like created. Studios are open between 10am and 4pm. More information and maps are available at our website: www.artsconnectinc.com.au.
The National Obi Art Prize submissions are now closed with over 80 submissions based on the theme ‘respect’ pouring in from across the country and over 25 submissions coming from one of the Sunshine Coast’s local independent schools. The artists were tasked with creating works based on the issues of domestic violence, Indigenous healing, LGBTI communities and/or refugees which inspired them to delve deep into their creative minds to find positive expressions of respect. The River School in Maleny has submitted over 25 pieces for the Obi and has 10 of the finalists’ spots with two in the Youth Award and eight in the Encouragement Awards, with a total of $2,500 up for grabs in those categories. The Obi Art Exhibition will be launched on the Friday July 7 and winners will be announced at the Painted Tie Event (see page 29 for full details) and this will be followed up by the exhibition on Saturday and Sunday, July 8 and 9 July, which will be a chance for the community to view the finalists' paintings on display at the Maleny Community Centre in the centre of Maleny. To find out more about the awards you can check out their website http://obiartaward.com.
All location details and information about the artists can be found at the Arts Connect website www.artsconnectinc.com.au

Emily Loves to Bounce
Free scarecrow making workshop
School holiday fun for the whole family! The Events Centre, Caloundra and Patch Theatre Company present ‘Emily Loves to Bounce’, an interactive school holiday show for the whole family, performing at The Events Centre, Caloundra on Friday June 30 at 10am. Inspired by three of the most loved books of Stephen Michael King, ‘Emily Loves to Bounce’ creates a whimsical world full of balls and boxes where amazing ideas are expressed in extraordinary ways. ‘Emily Loves to Bounce’ is a visual non-narrative poem about two characters, Henry and Amy. Through music, balls, boxes and one special ball called Emily, Henry and Amy play together and become friends in a magical theatrical world. Objects take on a life of their own. Henry and Amy find out more about themselves as they dream and share wild ideas. Tickets are $20 per person, $40 for a family of four, or for groups of eight plus, it’s $10 per person. For bookings call 5491 4240 or visit www. theeventscentre.com.au.
Ahead of this year’s Beerwah Charity Sports Scarecrow Competition, an interactive family friendly scarecrow making workshop will be held on Monday June 26 at Peachester Hall. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make a scarecrow then this is a great opportunity to come along from 9am until noon and discover more. GC&M News will be sponsoring the workshop, so it will be free for anyone who wants to attend – just rock up on the morning and let your creative inspiration flow. Materials will be provided for construction as well as hands-on instructions on how to make your own scarecrow. Participants are asked to bring along outfits and accessories to help make their scarecrow stand out from the crowd and who knows – the workshop may end up producing this year’s competition winners! If possible bring along long-sleeved and long trouser clothing for your creation. Categories of judging to help inspire the creative process include Scariest, Most Creative, Funniest, Remembering Elvis, and Traditional. Morning tea will be supplied and this family friendly workshop could be a great way to kick off school holiday activities. The Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival will be held on Saturday August 26 at Beerwah Sportsground so there will be plenty of time to prepare. For any additional information required about the workshop, please contact Janelle on 0439 970 416.

It’s so easy to grow your business with GC&M News! I have been advertising in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for nearly five years now. What I love about the paper is the ease of advertising; changes can be made without a hassle. Businesses have such little time, but it's never a problem for the girls to whip up an ad. What attracted me to the paper was the very friendly, approachable staff. It’s a small local business too, which means you are dealing directly with them. They also keep you up to date on any up and
coming advertising events etc, that your business may be interested in. I find it very cost effective as well. I have advertised elsewhere but have never had the same response rate. I feel without the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News my business would have not grown as quickly as it has. I also love to sit down with a coffee (when I get the chance) and have a read myself. Things To Do See The Magic Flute before it is too late By Judith Ross-Smith
Take the opportunity this weekend and go to the Maleny Community Centre at 4pm this Saturday or 2pm Sunday for one of the best amateur productions of any opera I have seen. Whether you know this most lyrical and symbolic of all operas, or you have never seen it, please do not miss it. Margaret Taylor’s Maleny Singers’ production of Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ has all the elements to make it an artistic triumph, and it is not an easy opera to manage effectively. Written by Mozart in collaboration with his friend and fellow Freemason Emanuel Schikaneder, the libretto, like "the craft" itself, is "veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols". Its theme is the triumph of light over darkness, and the director achieved this with both costume and lighting. The minimalist set suggested an Egyptian temple with shallow steps lending themselves to interesting performance groupings. The excellent 25 strong orchestra, conducted by Margaret Taylor, followed the score with integrity and sympathy. ‘The Magic Flute’ demands several excellent lead singers, and this small town of Maleny magically could supply them. Evalee Sharples as the heroine Pamina and Andie Little as Papagena carried the soprano roles with great aplomb; Colin Dunn’s well produced tenor made a splendid Tamino; Christopher Ward a delightfully earthy birdman Papagano; Rod Johnson a wonderfully satyr-like Monostatos and Tony Glazebrook’s bass managed the challenging low register of Sarastro’s two dramatic arias with distinction. In an innovative move by the director, Lisa Gregor, who played the Queen of the Night and is a more than competent dancer, performed an appropriately choreographed ballet sequence instead of attempting the famously difficult ‘Vengeance of Hell’ aria. Margaret Taylor’s well-rounded production extracted all the merriment and joy possible from an opera that will make you smile and leave the theatre feeling all’s well with the world. Tickets from trybooking.com.au. Earth spirit lovers Papagena (Andie Little) and Papagano (Christopher Ward).
Visit some history this Saturday If you are looking for something different to do on Saturday, you are in for a treat in Maleny. The Maleny Community Precinct now boasts two venues where visitors can enjoy engaging with some history, as well as a wonderful Heritage Trail Walk. On the last Saturday of every month, you can now visit both venues – the 5th Light Horse Regiment's ‘Beersheba Living Museum’, and historic Pattemore House. Both are open from 1pm until 4pm, and both are located within walking and driving distance of each other in their gorgeous settings on the Maleny Community Precinct. Pattemore House, at 15 Porters Lane, has plenty of parking (including disabled access and platform lift). Entry is only $5 with children free admission. The Friends of Pattemore House volunteers invite you to take a tour of this State Heritage listed farm house and garden, built in 1907 entirely from white beech, felled on the property – then pit sawn and built by hand into what you see today. The building is immaculately preserved for all to enjoy. Afternoon teas on the verandah and a walk across the Heritage Trail to visit Reynold’s Crossing and the Old Dairy Bails is also very popular with visitors. The Beersheba Living Museum is at the bottom of the new road, Parklands Drive, just off Porters Lane, and is a pleasant stroll or short drive away from Pattemore House. The walking trail from Maleny goes right past the building. The troopers now not only regularly open their museum with some wonderful displays to the public once a month, but invite you to watch them as they go through their training regimes, with the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club building also serving as their clubhouse, training centre and home. Entry is by donation and you can have a chat with the troopers – and even get a cuppa and an Anzac bikky! 28

What's new at Knitfest Contributed by Marnie Lee Knitfest Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival is in its second big year and, after attracting a huge crowd of 7,000 patrons last year, we're expecting even bigger crowds this year. This year you can expect to see even more yarnbombing – our Knitfest Yarnbombers have created a wonderful diorama installation scene called “In an Octopus's Garden”. It features a huge array of under the sea creatures and has taken the team eight months to complete. They have taken yarnbombing to new heights this year on the sponsors’ businesses with bunting, post cosies and sea creatures to decorate the town. The trade stalls, Saturday Suitcase Markets and Maleny Sunday Markets are back and kids will adore patting the alpacas at the Spinning and Weaving venue. The Police Box will return at the new Police Station as well as a new addition to see at the Ambulance Centre. We've included the kids and teens this year with their own special workshops and under 12s have their own venue – Kids Club, in Cooke Park. There's a treasure hunt for the kids too with five handmade sea creatures which will be hidden in sponsors’ stores in the main street where kids have to follow the trail and find them all to win one of the prizes. With 26 workshops this year, there is certainly something for everyone to get involved and participate. The event is held in Maleny on July 8 and 9. Cessation of Landsborough to Beerwah bus loop service
Late last Friday GC&M News were contacted via email by a local resident concerned that he had seen a sign attached to the bus stop at Landsborough Station last Monday saying that the Route #892 Landsborough to Beerwah Loop service will cease from July 1, 2017. (He also advised that there was a notice at the Beerwah Station bus stop). He was rightly concerned that, as this is the last public transport service to the Beerwah township, it will mean that users will be left with a 90 minute train service plus one rail bus stop outside of peak hours to travel from Landsborough to Beerwah. He was surprised that as Sunshine Coast Council promotes Beerwah as a growth area, why would these public transport services be reduced? He also posed the question: What value do those people living in Division 1 now get for the transport levy on the annual rates bill for Beerwah residents? Not surprisingly, he was also keen to know what Councillor Babero wski had to say on the issue, and questioned why there hadn’t been anythin g in the local papers on this closure as yet. I can confirm that GC&M News has not been informed that this was happening and that no Public Notice has been booked by the transpo rt provider. However, as we go to print on Monday, we will follow up on this issue this week and get back to you next week. Let us know what you think by emailing letters@gcnews.com.au by noon on Friday.
Re: New Beerwah sign.
On returning home last Sunday at about 7.30pm and driving past the entry statement at Glass House which was nicely lit up for all to see, we were astonished when reaching the new Beerwah sign which was completely in the dark, with no lights, not even a moon, to light it up. Once you are on the peak and coming down the side of the bridge the sign might as well not be there as at night it is completely unreadable and one would not even know that they were in Beerwah. Have you tried driving there at night yourself when there is no light around? Whatever the cost, and whatever I think of it, is neither here nor there, but to erect a major sign without lights is ridiculous. Lighting should have been considered. Otherwise it is a total waste of money if you can't see the sign at night. B Adams Beerwah
Worried about high school students
As a parent of a high school student it concerns me the number of students I regularly see at the skate park in Beerwah during school hours, sometimes it is around four to six, but on some occasions up to eight students. I understand that these days the senior students have a more flexible timetable and aren’t always required in the school grounds between 9am and 3pm each day, however the students I am seeing are younger than that. I think some would be as young as Year 7, about 12 years old. My understanding is that neither the school nor the police are able to make the students return to the school grounds and recently I very sadly witnessed a parent having to virtually force their son into a car to get him out of the skate park. It is devastating as a fellow parent to see how difficult it was for this parent to get their children to follow their request. I am very concerned about why these kids are behaving in this way, and what is going on with them. Are they struggling with the school work, is it problems at home or is it issues with other students? I can only imagine how hard it must be for the teachers, and I wonder if the school needs more support to keep the students in the classroom. I am worried about what will happen to these students. If they aren’t completing their school work will they get expelled from school? Then what happens? Do they resort to shoplifting or other crimes? Surely we need to get them on the right path now and make sure they have a more promising future. Name supplied Beerwah Letters continued next page JUNE 21 2017 |

You Said It Disgusting
Well, I've seen everything, now we have a local rubbish dump outside the post office and bakery in Beerwah. The fact is that Lifeline takes only what is in the bins and council have told them that it's not the council’s responsibility to pick up what's on the ground. With this rain the rubbish that is on the ground will have to go straight to the dump as it is all wet. Shame on you council, these people are volunteers and should not have to pick up lazy people’s garbage. This area is not a dumping ground. If the bins are full then these unwanted items need to be taken elsewhere! Gwen Mathews Glass House Mountains
Re: News piece "NBN towers not the problem"
(GC&M News, May 31) made it clear Councillor Rogerson was way out on far right field on the issue of the Eudlo tower back when it came before council and they rejected the NBN application. He says he "approved" towers to go in at other locations but what he fails to mention is that he didn't in truth approve anything. Those towers passed under the older town plan before December 2014 which is when the new town plan came in. He didn't have to "approve" towers as they went through council planners (who make the recommendations) with no problems and approval was automatic. He then labels the town planning regulations with the Telcommunications Code and Scenic Amenity Code as "ridiculous". If these codes went through almost three years back where were the criticisms then? Why did council and planners put through a "ridiculous" scheme code? It seems ridiculous now to claim it’s ridiculous – get the point? The article then said that the visual impact will be reduced by a "non-reflective finish" to the towers. How do you reduce the visual impact of a 55 metre lattice tower at Glass House? It’s the equivalent of a 15-storey building and more!
Send your letter to email: letters@gcnews.com.au or post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519
Perhaps paint it green or better still, paint a mural of the Glass House Mountains on its lattice! The Eudlo tower had the largest number of objections ever to an NBN tower. Doesn't that say something about the sentiments and needs of the community? Council just seemed to roll over and said kick us while we're down – and BTW we'll ask you to paint it 'non-reflective' to please the locals and pretend we have a Scenic Amenity Code. RE: Skippy Park/Gowen Park vegetation damage
The structure that was referred to in the letter is this little cubby house that was made way out of sight just in the bushes surrounding the park by a group of children (including my four-year-old son) and their family day care mum. It was made from dead leaves and sticks on the ground from the outskirts of the park and also from other people’s dead vegetation. Inside were chairs so the children could have picnics and play games, and it was in no way hurting anyone and it had given so much joy and excitement to the children who had spent hours collecting and learning about our environment. The letter writer is clearly not aware that the lady responsible goes to the park at least once a day with the children for picnics. She regularly picks up other people’s rubbish and cleans the park’s barbeque areas. I remember making all sorts of cubbies when I was little. These days there are too many rules and regulations for anyone to have any fun without having prying eyes raining on little children's parades. They are all very saddened by the destruction of their 'secret den'. Surely being out and about in the fresh air and learning about trees and wildlife, is so much more preferable to being stuck in front of a TV or computer games. Leanne Lang Landsborough
Re: Skippy Park Vegetation Damage (GC&M News, June 14)
Firstly, I ask the letter writer, where did they acquire the “woody debris, woody vine and clinging dead leaves” from? In regard to the reference “our little cubby house contributed nothing to this problem”, I find this disappointing that vegetation in an area revegetated by council has been somewhat diminished in value by the letter writer.
Why should the bird and butterfly attracting Black She-Oak, Macaranga and Monkey Rope plants be threatened by a misguided nature lover? What kind of message (respect) are we sending to our youth when we (adults) damage property (vegetation) that doesn’t belong to us? I refer the letter writer to Council’s Local Law No 4 (Local Government Controlled Areas, Facilities, Infrastructure and Roads) 2011 – Part 2: Use of local government controlled areas, facilities, infrastructure and roads, Section 12: Protection of vegetation “(1) A person must not, without lawful excuse, interfere with vegetation in a local government controlled area or road.” Lastly, while the invitation to discuss this in person seems reasonable on paper, I believe that nothing good would come of it. Re: Skippy/Gowen Park
To those pesky eco terrorist kids, building illegal cubby houses in the environmental area of Gowen/Skippy Park with nothing but the natural things around them. All I can say is shame on you for being so creative and inspired by the magic of the natural world at your age. I’m so glad that a concerned and upright citizen has showed the youth of today how to behave when you don’t understand or agree with something – by destroying it. Wade Watkins Landsborough P.S – I went through 15 pages of non-recycled paper trying to find the right words to describe this insignificant environmental disaster. Please in your rational wisdom don’t burn down the library in retaliation for my waste.

Attention first home buyers: Do you know which loan is right for you? Is there such a thing as a mortgage for first home buyers? When you haven’t purchased property before, it’s difficult to understand exactly what is and isn’t for you. That applies to properties, home loans and even savings strategies. Fortunately, we’ve got some tips from your local mortgage brokers on finding a home loan that’s suitable for the Australian first home buyer (FHB). Fixed interest rate loans are attractive to FHBs because they provide stability. The interest rate is fixed for a term, so you know what your repayments will be, unlike 30

variable rate loans, which float with market changes. When the fixed period is over and you know what it’s like to live with a mortgage, you can set another term or switch to a variable rate mortgage. Nearly one-third of FHBs are looking to parents or inheritance to buy a house, according to Core Logic’s Housing Affordability Survey. Many parents want to help make their children’s home buying dreams a reality. Sometimes, however, money lending can put a strain on personal relationships. That’s why we recommend going
about it formally. With these loans, your family member can either offer the security or sign on as a guarantor in case you’re ever unable to make payments. With offset account mortgages, you offset other accounts against your mortgage. That means your EFTPOS, cheque transactions, Internet banking and credit transactions can all be linked to an account offset to your loan. The more money in that account, the more will be reduced from your principal, thus reducing interest. Any buyer can benefit from expert home buying advice, but FHBs
should definitely consider using a broker to save time, money, and help navigate the process. Contact Smartline's Teresa today for expert advice.

Maleny Show rocked
This year Maleny Agricultural Show celebrated its 80th show and it was another great year in terms of attendance. It would be fair to say that the weather during the day on both Friday and Saturday would definitely have encouraged the crowd numbers, and while the evenings were a little chilly the great new night-time entertainment Country Rocks the Mountains proved popular with locals and visitors to the show. The success of an event this size is dependent on the hard work of many, and I want everyone to know just how much we appreciate their commitment to making sure the event ran so smoothly. It was really good to see the number of Beef entry numbers significantly increased since previous years which kept the stewards and their assistants busy. Each year we are working to increase the involvement of our younger generation at the show, and it was wonderful to see the number of schools who sent the teams of Ag Students along, and we are continuing to see an increase in the number of junior entries in the fruit and vege section, poultry, beef and dairy sections. During the days leading up to the Show we had many volunteers each day and on the Sunday about 90 people turned up to lend a hand to return the grounds back to the usual set up, which was done and dusted by 1pm. All in all it was a great year and I would really like to thank all those involved in making it happen, in particular, the executive committee, the exhibitors, the competitors, the stewards, the businesses that sponsored events, the community groups that got involved, and all of the volunteers. There will be a volunteer thank you afternoon tea in late July Let’s hope the sun shines on us again in 2018, and we look forward to seeing you at the showgrounds next year. Ivan Hankinson President Maleny Show Society
Standing up for beliefs
I am writing in response to the controversy that Margaret Court has caused in sharing her views on Alan Joyce’s public announcement, that Qantas supported the Same Sex Marriage Act. I want to congratulate all people who are willing to stand up for what they believe. If you are a believer in the Same Sex Marriage Act and are proud to stand alongside and support others who think likewise, congratulations, as it is good when people who think alike join ranks. Therefore as a born again Christian, I am writing to support a woman with whom I share a common belief. If you are pro-homosexuality you have the right to be pro and support the cause in any way you see fit, but give the Christian community and others who do not embrace homosexuality the same privilege. We should all be upset with Alan Joyce regardless of his personal sexuality because he has taken an Aussie business to promote his own agenda. Business is not pro or anti anything, it’s about making money. The message around the world is, be proud of who you are, so let me say this: I am proud to www.gcnews.com.au

Well done Margaret Court for standing up for what you know is right and well done to all you others for standing up for what you believe in. Total hypocrisy
One wonders at the hypocrisy of the local council, who cut down perfectly good fruit trees growing on the road verge in Buderim because rate payers were disobeying a by-law, while leaving mile upon mile of noxious weeds thriving on road verges all over this area. What about the by-law that states noxious weeds should be controlled? For example (this is just one of many such roads) drive along the Stanley River Road from Maleny just a few kilometres and count the privet trees about to drop millions of seeds; the lovely blue morning glory; bright yellow cassia; tobacco bush galore and miles and miles of lantana, all on council land. I once asked a council worker why he was pruning lantana on the verge instead of eradicating it. His reply, “can’t do that, can’t eradicate lantana, it’s a native. You can see it growing everywhere.” (Lantana, native of Africa, is toxic to stock!) When is the hypocritical council going to start doing the job they’re paid for instead of wasting rate payers money destroying productive fruit and vegetables? Name supplied Cedarton
Illegal immigrants
I just caught the last part of Ray Hadley’s radio program about a class action compensation award for immigrants held on Manus Island. My understanding is they have been awarded $70 million following a court decision for being illegally detained. The interesting thing is that the Australian Government has apparently stated that they will not be making any comment on this matter. Not
Margaret Ferris; and Maureen Bishop. We thank these donors for their generous support in making it the function that it was. The branch is in danger of closing unless we have some new members join us, as a few of our current members have unfortunately moved away or left for health reasons. The branch has been goin g since 1945. It would be unfortunate if this branch was to close, being part of a worldw ide organisation. Our meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month commencing at 9.30am in the Peachester Hall and we welc ome any new members to a pleasant and con structive meeting. If interested please phone Beverley on 5494 9544. Beverley Wild Peachester CWA
good enough with $70m involved! There is no excuse for this scale of incompetency and lack of transparency – Mr Turnbull, you have all the resources needed to make informed decisions which obviously did not occur in this case. Its time you pollies shaped up to the fact that you are responsible for your actions, which in this case have been deemed illegal. You have to make some sort of satisfactory statement as to the basis on which your decision was made, on whose advice was it made and what qualifications those who gave this advice have. Obviously the advice, if given, was incorrect and the decision made was incompetent. J T Weeks Beerwah
Social housing
I felt a deep sense of personal pride in the State Government last week when it was announced that both the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay areas would benefit greatly from a $1.8 billion state-wide spend on social housing. I lived my teenage years in a housing commission rental in Woodridge. My parents had fallen on hard times and that solid little brick house was a life saver for our family. A well-balanced community needs the social safety net of public housing to lend a helping hand to those who, for one reason or another, find themselves in vulnerable circumstances. The announcement from Premier Palaszczuk and Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni is great news for our region. Over ten years, the Sunshine Coast will have 243 social housing dwellings built at a cost of $71.5m, while the Moreton region will have $96.9m spent on 330 dwellings. This injection of funds into our region will also create 40 full-time jobs each year on the Sunshine Coast. That's a whole lot of relief for families doing it tough. In the Garden with Brownie
New plants from Chelsea show
At the UK’s Chelsea Flower Show this year, the winning 2017 Chelsea Plant of the Year was not some exquisite flowering rose or spectacular new tulip variety. In fact it was a humble mulberry. Mulberry 'Charlotte Russe', a dwarf mulberry, has been years in the making and was perfected by an 89-year-old plant breeder. The compact tree is the perfect size for small gardens and patios. The self-pollinating plant reaches only 1.5m and produces berries Mulberry 'Charlotte Russe' on plants that are only one year old – most mulberry plants take around eight years to mature. Unfortunately for local gardeners, production of the new variety is slow, with only 7,500 being released in the UK ... so it may be a few years before we get to see them here. Runner up was a new Salvia called ‘Crystal Blue’. With its light sky-blue flowers, it was a chance seedling found in a field of salvias Salvia 'Crystal Blue' in Michigan, USA. The pastel blue colour of the flowers blends well with other plants and it grows to a height of 45cm and spreads to 60cm. In third place was Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (‘HibisQs Petit Orange’, part of the HibisQs Petit Series). This is a newly developed variety characterised by shiny, dark, eyecatching foliage topped with small but many beautiful and conspicuous flowers. With longer lasting but smaller flowers than the usual Hibiscus, it is particularly suitable Hibiscus rosa-sinensis as a pot plant.
Blooming lovely Patricia Bradford from Glass House Mountains has shared this photo of an Aloe aloe in full flower in her garden. She says the Honeyeaters and native bees just love them. If you have a pic from your garden email it to brownie@gcnews.com.au.

JUNE 21 2017
Celebrity Sophie sets sights on Sunshine Coast When your punishment for behaving badly as a child is weeding an entire row of plants at the family nursery, one could be forgiven for not finding gardening enjoyable. And while ABC’s Gardening Australia host Sophie Thomson is the first to admit her love of horticultural pursuits wasn’t apparent from a young age, the selfprofessed “obsessive compulsive gardener” can now happily attest to the myriad of health and wellbeing benefits the pastime provides when she takes to the Queensland Garden Expo stage in Nambour in July. The Adelaide Hills local – who joins gardening gurus Costa Georgiadis and Jerry Coleby-Williams on the event’s speaker line-up on July 7-9 at the Queensland Garden Expo – says she is looking forward to delving into the positive impacts gardening posed for the mind and body and detailing why she considers gardening food for the soul. “Gardening can be an incredibly powerful tool and is amazingly healing for both individuals and communities,” Sophie says. “I’ve worked with people whose homes and businesses have been completely devastated by bushfires, and have seen first-hand how the simple act of coming together with others and generating new life through green space or a community garden can have a profound impact on one’s frame of mind and ability to cope. “The social interaction alone builds strong, resilient and connected communities, and that truly is something money can’t buy.” Sophie says the swell of evidence supporting the physical and mental benefits of gardening is far from simply anecdotal, with research indicating gardening and access to green space has positive effects on everything from blood pressure to stress levels. “Various studies have associated horticultural activities and garden settings with reduced stress levels, feelings of calm and relaxation, heightened levels of attention and self-esteem, and enhanced memory function,” she says. “You only have to wander out to your patch and take a few deep breaths to feel the sense of calm and tranquility that gardening brings.” “Looking beyond the backyard, gardening presents a number of positive applications within healthcare settings, particularly in areas such as aged care.” “Horticulture therapy – where green spaces and gardening activities are used as rehabilitation activities – has been shown to decrease pain in aged care and rehabilitation patients, minimise agitation and even reduce falls.” And for the average backyard gardeners and not-so-green thumbs among us? “If all else fails and you’ve had a terrible day, there’s nothing more satisfying than dusting off the secateurs and unleashing your frustration on a hedge or overgrown shrub!” Sophie is a renowned speaker, author, broadcaster, horticulturalist and trained naturopath, as well as a strong advocate for sustainable gardening practices and growing organic food. She will journey to the Sunshine Coast to take part in the Queensland Garden Expo between July 7 and 9, with gardening for health and wellbeing just one of the topics she will focus on throughout the three-day event. The 2017 expo will feature more than 120 presentations and demonstrations across eight stages, with 55 nurseries expected to sell over 40,000 plants a day. It will be held at Nambour Showgrounds, Coronation Avenue, Nambour. To find out more or to purchase tickets online, please visit www. qldgardenexpo.com.au. www.gcnews.com.au

What is the state of your heart? Jesus was once confronted with a situation – a man with a shrivelled hand presented himself to be healed. The problem was that it was the Sabbath and Jewish law said that you weren't allowed to work on the Sabbath. What should he do? Jesus asked the bystanders, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" (Mark 3:4) The bystanders all remained silent – watching and waiting to see what Jesus would do. Some of them were waiting for the excuse to accuse him of doing the wrong thing because they felt it was more important to obey the Sabbath ruling than to help someone in desperate need. Jesus was deeply distressed and angry at the
state of their stubborn hearts (Mark 3:5), hearts that were more interested in keeping rules than helping their neighbours. While they were busy criticising Jesus for breaking a rabbinical law, he saw their stubborn, bitter, hard hearts. People are in danger of having hard hearts when they put the status quo ahead of meeting the spiritual and physical needs of those around them. One of the things that angers Jesus is people who have no compassion for others and are more concerned about what religion can do for them rather than God and his kingdom. Jesus solved the issue on that day by healing the man. Even though it made the Pharisees angry with him, Jesus choose to help the man and glorify God. His pure heart revealed the hardness of the hearts of those around him. What would it have revealed about yours?

It was also the last hurrah for life member John McSwain who entertained us with jokes and Scottish songs (bringing tears to our eyes). Wednesday, June 14: Jackpot Day was cancelled due to the bad weather. Thursday, June 15: Winners of the day were Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson with 2 wins + 38. Just for Laughs Bats in the bell tower
GC&MNews Crossword 597 1
He had rung the bells long and loud, he had used every kind of bat repellent known to man, and yet the bats returned. The Lutheran pastor replied, “We used to have the same problem with bats. Now when I find a bat in the bell tower, I baptise it, confirm it, give it its first communion, and I never see it again!” Contributed by Phil Thamm Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Witta

LEO July 23 - August 22 Most Leos are going into some secret or confidential talks that will be very revealing over the week ahead. Make enquiries, ask the right decisions and hidden information will come to light. The New Moon on Saturday ushers in a period for you to complete all tasks that are top priority. Let nature take its course and there is a romantic spell. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 The planet Mercury joins with the Sun entering Cancer on the 21st. Your focus is heavily on business over the weekend as the New Moon is in your social house suggesting that friends are sending you work contacts. Look to your intuition being accurate now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 There is a strong accent on communication as news or directives from people moving through great changes arrive in your life. Give your point of view and act as a mediator. The Solstice indicates a change of sign into Cancer, and with Mars making contact with Jupiter in your sign you are ready to discuss a new venture this weekend. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The planet Mercury enters Cancer together with the Sun changing over into that sign at the Solstice on the 21st. Your thoughts will turn to exotic trips and so get your family to help manifest your vision. Emotional energies make steps towards a future with somebody you care for. A Lutheran Church and a Roman Catholic church stood across the street from each other. Over the years, the Catholic priest and the Lutheran pastor had become great friends and often spent a morning discussing their respective congregations' problems over coffee and cake. One morning, the priest said that his church had bats in the bell tower. He recounted how he had done everything possible to drive them away.
ARIES March 21 - April 20 This is an important week as Wednesday 21st is the Solstice which means the Sun changes sign from Gemini into Cancer. What also is important is that you have the New Moon on Saturday 24th at approximately noon. As the New Moon is in the sign of Cancer it is a good time to focus attention on home affairs ready for a new direction. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 This Wednesday, June 21, is not only the Solstice of the Sun sign changing into Cancer, but strangely enough the planet Mercury enters Cancer, joining up with the Sun. This brings ideas and invitations to and from family members and most thinking processes are emotionally fuelled. The New Moon on Saturday means writing your wishes. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 The Sun’s entry into Cancer on the 21st launches a new financial cycle for you. Over the course of the month you will be rethinking your priorities concerning what you need to gain a sense of security. The focus is on communication so make calls, fill out papers, send out applications and get questions answered, particularly on finance. CANCER June 22 - July 22 This should be your most wonderful week starting on Wednesday 21st as the Sun enters your sign on the Solstice at 2.25pm. The planet Mercury also joins up into your sign and that means your emotional knowledge is strong and leads you to heart-aligned decisions. So follow your instincts and write your wishes down on Saturday.
