FROM THE EDITOR IT’S typical, but still disappointing, when big business pulls the rug out from a community and doesn’t bat an eyelid. The Commonwealth Bank’s decision to close its Beerwah branch draws the curtain on the presence of the ‘Big Four’ in the hinterland. ANZ closed last year, Westpac in 2018 and, while not a major bank, Suncorp in 2017. Each closure causes heartache for customers and is a hit to the region. Despite knowing this, CBA deigned to tell customers the old-fashioned way: a sign sticky-taped to the branch window. On that sign they were shown a map, where it was suggested they could simply duck over to the next closest branch ... at Caloundra. No loyalty and even less respect. Letters were eventually issued but even then there was scant information
DISTRIBUTION JUDY TOMLINSON joinus@glasshousecountrytours.com.au
about the reasons behind the closure. One customer made enquiries but only wasted two hours of her time before being told by someone in Newcastle they couldn’t really help. This closure is a blow for a region that is growing, where billions are being spent on roads and rail, while retail, tourism and property developments are happening at pace. Banking might be changing but for small business and elderly customers, this is entirely unhelpful. Thankfully there is still one bank committed to the hinterland for the long-term. Drop in next door to the BOQ and say G’day to Martin.

Bank is cashing out
Recent bank closures
Suncorp Maleny and Beerwah - 2017 Westpac Beerwah – Nov 2018 ANZ Beerwah – Feb 2021 CBA Beerwah – Sep 2022
By Kirra Livingstone THE last of the Big Four banks will permanently close its doors in the hinterland in September. The Commonwealth Bank this month told customers, via signage on the front door of its Beerwah branch, that it would close on September 2, directing people to its Caloundra branch or the local post office. The closure comes after ANZ closed its Beerwah branch in February last year and leaves the Bank of Queensland as the only full-service banking option in the region. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said customers were “justified in their disappointment”. “I have contacted the Commonwealth Bank to express the disappointment and frustration of so many locals,” he told GC&M News. “Decisions such as these are shortsighted given the continual growth of the Beerwah community and its surrounds.” CBA Regional General Manager Kylie Hall said a recent review of the branch, in line with the expiry of its lease, meant the bank “made the difficult decision

Facebook reaction to permanently close our Beerwah branch”. “This branch has had a 33 per cent drop in transactions over the five years before the coronavirus pandemic,” she said. Staff would be redeployed with Beerwah staff offered opportunities “supporting customers over the phone and online”. But CBA customer Diana Michael said she loved getting “proper customer service” from the branch and was worried how others in the community would cope. “I had a conversation with the staff and the other people coming in expressing their concerns and shock as well,” she said. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said: “It is disappointing that this announcement wasn’t conveyed to our
local community and businesses in a more negotiable way.” He said the loss of the CBA branch for some personal transactions or businesses “will now have to take a backward step for Beerwah customers”. Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president Jenny Broderick said that the move would upset a lot of business customers, especially after ANZ closed in February last year. “There’ll be a significant upset from businesses in particular that made the move from ANZ to Comm Bank thinking that CBA would be around for an extended period of time,” Jenny said. “For businesses banking money regularly, they will notice the effects the most. “Thankfully we’ve got BoQ, and (owner/manager) Martin is committed to the region for at least 10 years.”
Not bloody happy Jan, was told many times that they would never close, their customers were too valuable they said. Margaret Johnson Beerwah is developing so quickly the Bank is needed in this town. Stupid decision. Pat Plowman Now what do our 88 year old parents do. They changed from ANZ to commonwealth. John Henry Branches closing for greater bank profits has been going on for decades now; this really shouldn’t come as a shock. Drew Sanderson And with that I too will close down my Commonwealth bank account and moving next door Travis Crouch Leave the atm at least ya knobs. Johnny Wuttrich

Heavy rail hinterland splurge
Grisly discovery in mountains
By Mitch Gaynor
Detectives have charged two people following the discovery of human remains at the Glass House Mountains on June 7. Forensic testing is underway to determine the identity of the remains, however they are believed to be those of Donna Howe, a 57-year-old Caboolture woman who was last seen by family in late April. Police executed a search warrant at a Balkee Drive, Caboolture, address. A 41-year-old Caboolture man and a 31-year-old Caboolture man have both been charged with one count each of murder and misconduct with a corpse. Police will allege both people - who have since appeared in the Caboolture Magistrates Court - were known to the victim. Two men four-wheel-driving discovered the remains in a remote forestry track off Connection Road at Glass House Mountains around midday on the 7th.
A multibillion-dollar commitment to upgrade rail networks including the Beerburrum to Nambour line headlines a cash splurge on mass transport investments in the 2022 State Budget. But local federal member, Andrew Wallace, says there is no new money in the hinterland announcements, with the promises merely “smoke and mirrors from a stale Labor Government”. State Treasurer Cameron Dick said the government was committing $489m for stage 1 of the Beerburrum to Nambour (B2N) rail upgrade. It was also announced that it would be spending $4.8m towards a $6m commitment towards the Beerwah to Maroochydore rail extension planning. The spending announcement, ahead of the State Budget, was part of a $3.5bn pipeline of new rail projects across the state. “This investment is headlined by projects like the Beerburrum to Nambour and Kuraby to Beenleigh track duplications, Gold Coast Light Rail stage three, station upgrades across all of Queensland, plus the manufacturing of 65 brand new trains in Maryborough,” Treasurer Cameron Dick said. But Mr Wallace said there was nothing new in the announcements for the Sunshine Coast electorate. “It has been 12 weeks since the previous Liberal National Government announced $1.6 billion to deliver the Sunshine Coast Rail project,” he said. “Three months on, and all we have are rehashed announcements, smoke and mirrors from a stale Labor Government.” Mr Wallace added: “The $550.8
million Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Duplication Project, for which I secured $390 million is not a new announcement. It’s been announced time and again.” He added that the $4.8m for a planning study towards Sunshine Coast Rail was “measly” and “announced last year”. “We have had 20 years of studies from Labor and no action. It’s time for Labor to get on board,” he said. The B2N project - of which funding is split 70-30 between federal and state budgets -would see a duplication of the line between Beerburrum and Landsborough stations, as well as station upgrades, new park ‘n’ ride facilities and new rail passing loops between Landsborough and Nambour.

‘Biosphere’ status for region
IT’S official! The Sunshine Coast has officially been recognised internationally as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The region now proudly stands as an international site of excellence and an area of natural beauty. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said recognition was a truly historic moment for the Sunshine Coast. “After years in the making, this prestigious designation will help us protect and enhance our region, communities, economy and our natural environment for future generations,” he said.

Call to address youth DV rates
It’s time to rock on
By Mitch Gaynor
By Sonia Isaacs Clark
RATES of domestic violence against young people are becoming more frequent and must be addressed, a top lawyer who addressed Maleny school students, said. Adair Donaldson specialises in talking to NRL clubs and businesses about sex education, consent and harassment. He was invited to present to Maleny sporting groups, business and school children by domestic violence prevention group Speak Up Now. Speaking to the Maleny Chamber of Commerce, Adair said he was particularly concerned that as he visited schools there was a considerable increase in questions and conversations about coercive control. “The rates with respect to domestic violence are becoming younger,” he told guests at the chamber breakfast. “What came as a surprise is when I go to schools young women have been coming up and talking about coercive relationships. “A young woman will say to me that a friend has broken up with her boyfriend who has bombarded her with messages. This should not be her problem. “We have to have these conversations or it’s going to keep on happening.”
HINTERLAND musician Michael Whiticker has lauded a move to supercharge the region’s music economy. The newly created Sunshine Coast Music Industry Collective (SCMIC) held its launch event at NightQuarter, on Thursday, June 16. It aims to provide a platform for a collaborative voice to develop and promote a vibrant industry that attracts and retains talent to the region. “The realisation of the importance of live music and arts, and the value to all aspects of our community is rising,” Michael, from Glasshouse Musos, said. “SCMIC can provide a great melting pot for ideas to be circulated and considered and a cohesive voice to attract greater opportunities to fund, encourage and promote the Sunshine Coast music industry.” For details go to www.facebook.com/SunshineCoastMIC
Speaking to Year 11s and 12s at Maleny High School he gave a message to students about respectful relationships. Speak Up Now’s Val France said she was impressed with the assertiveness of year 12s. “We had some great interactive sessions with students, and the year 12s especially were very clear on right and wrong,” Val said. Adair’s presentations coincided with Speak Up Now’s launch of its new booklet, Dating Without Violence, which aims to teach teens and families about

identifying and dealing with destructive relationships. “With domestic and famly violence, you have to get kids to understand these scenarios while they’re young,” Val said. “The booklet demonstrates what is a healthy and unhealthy relationship, so when they begin their dating journey they have a bit of forewarning.” The booklet is available to students and community members and will also be available at hairdressers and barbers who have completed the Hairdressers with Hearts training.

Very special calendar of events
The Coat Rack is back
By Jennifer Kent
By Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club
THE QCWA Beerwah Branch has been busy behind the scenes working on a special project to celebrate Queensland Country Women’s Association turning 100. Paying homage to the organisation’s achievements over the past century, the Beerwah ladies are proud to have produced a 1920s themed 2023 calendar, available for purchase later this year. The goal of the calendar project is to increase awareness of all the roles the QCWA Beerwah plays in the local community, with funds raised through the sale of the calendar going back into future community projects. Providing a fun and challenging project for the Beerwah members, QCWA Beerwah’s Debbie Ives shared that the project has increased the opportunities to build relationships with local businesses through sponsorship and participation in the calendar. “The QCWA Beerwah ladies’ pride themselves in collaboration with other community groups and organisations, being active in the local community, and having lots of fun,” she said. “Funds have been raised through very generous sponsorship from local businesses to cover the cost of producing 500 copies of the calendar. A special mention to Bassett Barks for being the Platinum Sponsor.”
DONATIONS are being sought for the Maleny Coat Rack. More than ever this provision of warm clothing is paramount as the cold of a serious winter settles in. The Maleny Coat Rack is located in the laneway next to IGA and anyone is welcome to take or leave an item of warmth. Donations of winter jackets, coats, jumpers and cardigans for men, women and children, are welcomed. There are hangers on the rack, so please feel free to hang your unwanted coats, jackets, jumpers and cardies. Organiser Ra’ Yoga and Lifestyle’s Suzi Lough and Sue Krucker of Maleny State High school said: “The vision is to initiate charity and change, through supporting our communities need.” Organisers asked that no other garments were to be put on the rack and that there was no blanket box this year, however blankets are being accepted by the Neighbourhood Centre. They also asked that the public respects the rack and the IGA premises.
The calendar was launched this week at the QCWA’s Tea Party celebration at Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct on June 21, where guests were treated to a delicious morning tea inspired by yesteryear, special guest speakers and an exclusive calendar preview. The official calendar release will take place as the QCWA Beerwah Scone Festival on August 11. Calendars will be available for purchase as the Festival and at Beerwah Tower Green Markets from August through December. The branch welcomes local businesses who can stock the QCWA Beerwah Centenary Calendar to get in touch. GC&M News were lucky enough to get a sneak peak of some of the behind-the-scenes antics of the QCWA ladies on set.

$50m tourist park set for hinterland
Street name a safety threat
By Mitch Gaynor
By Kirra Livingstone A BEERWAH street name was changed from the identical name of a Glass House Mountains road because of the risk of emergency services being called to the wrong address. As revealed by GC&M News last edition Mountain View Place in Beerwah was renamed Mountain Breeze Place to avoid confusion after residents complained that they had been dealing with wrong deliveries for months. Glass House resident Vikki Bartel had petitioned the council to change the name. Council said it changed the name because of “serious threats” to public safety. “Queensland emergency services had advised council that the identical street naming in Glass House and Beerwah has the potential to create confusion and serious threats to public safety due to delays in response times by emergency services,” a council spokesperson said. “As per standard practice, in instances where street or road name duplications are identified, on May 17 council informed property owners at Mountain View Place in Beerwah their street name would be changed to Mountain Breeze Place.”
A FAMILY-OWNED golf course on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview is set to become a $50 million modern day tourist park including a range of short-stay and deluxe accommodation over 29 hectares on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. A development application lodged by G’Day Group with the Sunshine Coast Council proposes 359 sites offering a range of facilities from unpowered camping sites to deluxe cabins. Other activities include pools, a nine-hole mini golf course, two pools, BBQ areas, and a camp kitchen. G’day Group Chief Investment Officer Amanda Baldwin said a massive influx of expected visitors to the region over the next decade gave the group confidence to push ahead with the proposal. “Since acquiring the Glenview golf course in late 2020, we’ve undertaken detailed economic, environmental, and planning analysis to inform our application for the development of a new family friendly holiday park at the site,” she said. “With visitor nights to the Sunshine Coast expected to increase by more than four million over the next decade, there is strong demand for more accommodation located in close proximity to the region’s many tourist attractions, including Australia Zoo, Aussie World and the new, planned Glenview waterpark.” “Our proposal is similar other successful holiday park developments that have been completed across Australia, which have been proven to increase tourism and create economic uplift to local communities.
“However, this is only the first stage of the development process, and we are committed to working closely with Council and listening to community feedback to ensure we bring to life an asset that will deliver long term benefits for the region.” G’Day Group owns Discovery Parks which operates 60 sites around Australia. “In its current form, our proposal represents an investment of around $50 million and with a development timeline of approximately 18-24 months once necessary approvals have been attained,” Ms Baldwin said. The site is situated at 3574 Steven Irwin Way and is currently occupied by a par 3 golf course.

IT WAS coined a ‘Monster Festival’ but it was the monster effort from Beerwah’s Reesha Lewis that took the limelight. The West Mac Monster Festival - held in the Red Centre saw Reesha not only dominate the 128km ultra marathon, but break a women’s record in the process. Reesha completed her 128km race, held along the Larapinta trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges outside of Alice Springs, in 22 hours and 30 minutes - smashing the previous record by about an hour. She came fourth overall in the 128km “Ellery Monster” race, but was the first woman to cross the finish line. The next closest female competitor about an hour behind her. While the thought of taking on the race would stop most people in their tracks, Reesha not only won, but perservered through a gruesome injury just 17kms into the run. “I’ve never seen so many rocks before in my life, I tripped and stumbled on a rock and I tried to save
myself but I got one huge rock right to my hip and one to the knee as well,” she said. “To be so physically and mentally broken after a race was very different for me, but it’s just going to make me stronger. The trail takes competitors from Ellery Creek to the Alice Springs Overland Telegraph Station along the Iconic Larapinta Trail, taking the alternate high route between Standley Chasm and Jay Creek. Although there were checkpoints along the way, which would have come in handy after injuring herself, Lewis continued to push on with little to no stopping. “I take myself back to a hard place, I tried to block it out and take my mind somewhere else and I try to convince myself that it’s not as bad as it is,” she said.
“You can choose to stop and have something to eat, I was just in and out, refilling my water, and just kept moving. “As long as you are going forward, you’re one step closer to the finish line.” It has been an incredible journey for Reesha who only a few years ago lost 75kgs after committing to ending bad habits and pursuing the healthy life. She started boxing, mountain running and doing ultramarathons, and hasn’t looked back.

impersonating the department’s online services. These fake sites are designed to steal passwords, personal information and identity documents, such as passports and driver licences. Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh said: “Right now, we’re seeing a lot of SMS and email scams leading to fake myGov sign-in pages – we’ve had more than 360 of these scams reported since April 2022.” Scammers are always looking for new ways to convince unsuspecting taxpayers into divulging personal information, such as bank details, usernames and passwords. “This year, the ATO has taken out the guess work and busted some scam myths to help people stay protected” said Mr Loh. He said it was a myth that only older people fell for scams. In the last three years, younger Australians have fallen victim to the

Another myth was that scams were easy to spot. “We’ve seen some very convincing email and SMS scams that would trick even the most cautious people” Mr Loh said. He said the ATO would never send an unsolicited message requesting personal information via a return email or SMS; send an email or SMS with a link to log in to its online services; or ask you to pay a fee in order to receive a refund. A third myth was that scams only happened during tax time. “While you may only focus on your tax when it’s time to lodge, scammers are constantly looking for ways to steal your personal details and financial information.“ Mr Loh said. “We see different types of tax and super scams happening year-round.”
With the tax year-end fast approaching it is a good time to get everything ready for the lodgement of your 2022 tax return. With cryptocurrency, we ask our clients to use a platform like koinly to summarise the purchases and sales before you come and see us.

The sky is the limit for award winning young adult author OPENING a new chapter in her life, talented young Sunshine Coast author Rhiannon Wilde sets her sights on the American publishing market in October. On proving her success with Australian audiences, Rhiannon, 27, has finalised the US edits and cover of her Queensland Literary Award-winning first young adult (YA) novel ‘Henry Hamlet’s Heart’. In an additional and unexpected honour, Rhiannon starts this year as a recipient of a 2022 Children’s Book Council of Australia Notable Book. Charged with a combination of nerves and excitement, the former secondary school teacher aims to showcase the queer coming-of-age novel to a new and diverse readership. Rhiannon notes the importance of diversity and representation within her stories, allowing her characters to question their identity and place within the world. Pleased publishers are retaining the Australian essence of the novel with only a few language changes, the author regards ‘Henry Hamlet’s Heart’ as a love letter to Brisbane. “It is a slightly different perspective on growing up because there is a lot of YA set in American high schools and I think Henry is so different to that,” Rhiannon said. “I hope they feel a little piece of themselves outside of their geographical experience.”
Finalising pages of her second YA novel ‘Where You Left Us’, due to be released in August, the Caloundra author was inspired by her walks on the beach during the COVID isolation. ‘Where You Left Us’ is described as a “mystery romance family saga with a gothic element set by the beach”. The detail in characters and settings play an important role in her novels enabling the reader to connect. Rhiannon explores the different perspectives of her protagonists as they navigate family and personal situations. There is a thread of vulnerability within the characterisations allowing readers to resonate as Rhiannon draws insight from real life. As a person who suffered from anxiety in her youth, Rhiannon shares pieces of herself with readers to highlight the importance of mental health and the positive message of working to get better. “Imagination comes first out the void and then brings them to life through real experience,” Rhiannon said. “The dialogue should be real.” The positive feedback from her adolescent audience is the most rewarding for the fulltime author, knowing people have read her work. Rhiannon acknowledges while working in the YA genre, she wants to do right by her supporters for their continued reading and enjoyment.
In bringing her stories to life Rhiannon has learnt from the publishing process, transferring new skills and knowledge to the second book. “You learn about minimising work for yourself,” Rhiannon said, adding you don’t make the same mistakes again. “You have a tool kit of writing skills that you take with you.” Not willing to rest on her laurels, Rhiannon is looking to delve into the fantasy genre with ideas she has carried since her teenage years. Rhiannon states the ideal goal is to experiment with styles and genres while compiling a diverse body of work in order to find her niche.

Rescue book launch success BEERWAH resident Neil Halpin launched his book, ‘Glass House Mountains Rescue 1965 – 2015: The Story’ on Saturday, June 4. Neil said the launch was a humbling experience as family, friends, past and present State Emergency Service members attended, including Helicopter Rescue Service pioneers Jim Campbell (pilot) and Hayden Kenny (crewman). John Cotter, past director of Queensland Emergency Service and retired SES leader Graeme Cheal introduced the book. Neil described the book as a ‘story’, a snapshot of some of the rescues performed across the mountains over the decades. The afternoon concluded with book signings and the photographic capture of those present who featured and still feature - in the ever happenings of rescues from the Glass House Mountains. During proceedings, reference was made to the importance of volunteers as one of the greatest strengths of a community. The SES organisation is one that has

Hello and welcome to our very first regular contribution to the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. Waste Action Maleny (WAM) is a local group dedicated to reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. We seek to do this by engaging in actions to raise community awareness and discussion about the waste crisis and its far-reaching effects on our future. We will be exploring how we can do this by: • Rethinking the role we each play as producers and consumers of waste • Reducing what we consume • Reusing what we have • Repairing our existing possessions • Repurposing items for another use • Rehoming things that we no longer need • Recycling materials to create new products Be sure to check out the ideas and suggestions as each of these topics are explored in future editions. In the meantime, you can find more information on our website www.wasteactionmaleny.org Also, you can join the discussion in our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/ groups/1209573799533338

THE housing crisis and increased coast of living, along with impacts of floods and the pandemic have led to increased financial hardship, emotional stress and social isolation for many people in our community. The Glasshouse Country Welfare Network is made up of local Neighbourhood Centres, churches, RSLs and others, with most members volunteers. The types of emergency relief and welfare supports vary between organisations ranging from food donations and vouchers, personal hygiene packs and Telstra vouchers to free or low-cost counselling. words, feelings and ideas. This helps them when they are communicating and investigating the world around them,” she says. Beerwah Library hosts interactive Storytime and Rhymetime sessions, available every week and free to attend. The West family are regular visitors to the Beerwah Library. “Ada and Harvey love to play games together, picking books and looking through the books they’ve chosen in a snuggly spot,” says Mum Rachel. “Harvey and Ada also love to read to their youngest sister, Lilah. Their book recommendations are any stories that look funny or silly. So, it’s great to have access to a wide variety of books, at the library, instead of reading the same ones over and over at home. It’s also a good way to spend some time on a rainy day.”

YOU Bank Closure Again!
Closure of the local CBA branch will again make it difficult for people to access personal banking services. At one time we had six or seven banks in Beerwah, now we have one. Yes, services have moved online but Beerwah is a small country town and quite a large number of elderly people rely on a personal banking service. Early last year the Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce was approached by one of the Directors of the Palmwoods Heritage Community Bank to introduce the Community Bank idea to the Executive. As I was stepping down as an executive member, I volunteered to contact Heritage and investigate if a Heritage Community Branch could be established in Beerwah. We formed a Steering Committee, had some discussions with Heritage but were told that due to a planned merger with another bank, everything is on hold for the time being. I personally don’t think the idea is totally lost, but it seems that there is not much enthusiasm from the Bank. This is very unfortunate, it would make so much sense to have an alternative banking system in our town. Ursula Starkovsky Glasshouse Mountains
Our local bank closing is a feature of our system, not a flaw.
So the Commonwealth Bank is the last of the big four to remove its services to the hinterland. Why? When you remove the corporate spin, they can’t make enough money from us to satisfy shareholders. Privatisation has failed us. The electricity grid this week was, in effect, temporarily nationalised. Economics 101. Supply and demand. Private energy companies can restrict supply when demand is high, and charge more. Good for shareholders, not good for us. So the regulatory body stepped in and said “Enough! You will supply energy at a reasonable cost”. When water was privatised, they promised us cheap water. What actually happened? Prices hiked, and the fat cats got rich. Aged care? Poor dears surviving on slop that passes for meals built to a budget of $6 a day. And some CEO somewhere getting filthy rich. Education. Same thing. When a student becomes a customer - you can’t fail them. Which is not good for students or employers. The loss of the local Commonwealth Bank (note its name - it used to be a publicly owned institution) means that we are just another victim to
privatisation. It’s not a flaw in the system - it’s a feature. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can put people and planet before profit. We are a society before we are an economy. We have the right to demand transparent institutions. We can demand ethical, people-centred localised commerce. We can demand a new brand of democracy where every voice is heard and honoured.

We can demand short supply-lines, local industry and farmers supported more than coal billionaires. We were led by the nose to the privatisation drinking hole by the two major parties. It’s time we lift our head, make different decisions and co-create a different world. Andrew McLean. Spokesperson for Maleny Greens.

The new moon in your own sign on the 29th tears up all the good behaviour treaties you’ve put your name to. Maybe your temper will be unleashed in the heat of the moment, or you decide to finally voice niggling worries. Trouble is, it’s well past the calm before the storm. Daily routine could become a tad choppy.
Slow down, Leo. Take a break and give yourself a chance to rest. If reconciliation is necessary, make an effort to forgive and forget. In return, something that has seemed daunting may suddenly turn into a simple exercise - thanks to the generosity of a colleague or friend. You can return the favour in time.
Take care not to confuse fantasy with reality this week. Despite your reputation for being detached, there are deep inner depths hidden beneath that sometimes cool exterior. This makes you a bit of a mystery, really. And perhaps you prefer it that way. After all, there’s no point in showing your entire hand, when one card at a time will do.
Get ready for special treats to come your way. Enjoy every moment of feeling pampered and spoiled. At work, too, your patience should finally be rewarded as an important breakthrough is achieved. A timely bonus could also make it easier to pay debts. Bills first, luxuries later. Sometimes, everything just seems to fall into place.
This week, Scorpio, you’re a natural socially – professionally, too. The old cliche about catching more flies with honey than with vinegar springs to mind. It’s also a great time to update your image. If any caution is needed, it will involve finances. Thanks to a spend-happy cosmos, you suddenly want everything you see.
The cosmos keeps its steady hand on your shoulder to ensure a slowdown in spending. The same caution applies to your possessions - put everything under lock and key if you have to. Hold onto what you have, put nothing at risk and derailed finances should start to get back on track. Focus on earning money, Sagittarius - not squandering it.
A joint venture with a financially savvy partner could prove rewarding, although a clear understanding of each other’s role is a must. Avoid “get rich quick” schemes and fast talkers. The road to riches isn’t built overnight, Capricorn. Take your time, work steadily, and you’ll soon be sauntering down that richly paved yellow brick road.
With this week’s tetchy Mars, it’s definitely not the time to flirt with danger, make important decisions or try to reconcile relationships. The week ahead requires decisive handling as cosmic forces close the gates on unviable projects. There may be disappointments, arguments or financial setbacks. If so, just let go.
It’s a week when meditation, gentle exercise or any form of counselling should work to your advantage. And if you feel more spiritually protected, you are. Greater compassion is shown to those in need. The best news? Heart and home unite. A change of address is also likely soon. Also, look to the next few months for further studies or retraining.
A secret could be exposed, Aries. While you may feel a tad indignant at having your psyche placed on such public display avoid any temptation to retaliate. This is not a time to shoot whatever grace you have left in the foot. The trouble with confronting bullies is that you risk acting the same way. Be the better person.
Given your amazing capacity to learn quickly, this week should suit you well. The planets promote an atmosphere of open chat and communication, enabling you to share your thoughts and opinions. At the same time, you’re encouraged to discard outworn attitudes and embrace all that’s new. Don’t shy away from the unexpected.
Finally, the world seems to be in tune with you. Good news indeed, Gemini. Instead of having to worry about pleasing others, you’ve more time to please yourself. It’s also the start of revived ambitions, when you feel keen to break open padlocked dreams. Cashflow starts to be replenished too, and that’s definitely something to look forward to.
It’s a Cancer kind of week. The Sun is on the move, and so are you. Don’t worry too much about formalities - it’s your spirit that others will notice. Should you find yourself up against equally determined minds, stop and listen. You could actually learn from others’ opinions. But it’s not all work. Social invitations no longer need polite avoidance.
For some time now, you’ve suffered upheaval. Still, the experience hasn’t been all bad, as you’ve gained the gifts of wisdom, tenacity and compassion. The planets now announce a change in pace and growing confidence. Romance wins a generous time slot, with enough allure to conjure up an enigmatic new love.
Take care not to confuse fantasy with fact. In recent times, laid-back planets have forced a slower approach - but this snail-like pace is beginning to test even the most patient Virgos. You’ve been encouraged to hold steady for a while now, so who can blame you for revving up the gears and speeding ahead? It’s been way too long since you’ve felt the wind in your hair.
Cosmic forces allow you to reclaim your stride. Still, expect the occasional hurdle. Romantically, make your move after the 6th, when there’s a better chance of success. Mid-week also instigates financial changes. If you’re hoping to finalise negotiations, make sure any agreement is committed to ink. Not everyone is trustworthy.
Few people will totally agree with your plans this week and may not like what you have to offer. Don’t try to force your views. The best thing is to avoid discussions where you feel questions or accusations are pointed at you. Instead, follow your own dreams and allow others to have theirs. Not everyone beats to the same drum.
Start collecting property listings, Sagittarius.Looks like a house move is in your future and you’re primed to make this new living space extra intriguing. But when it comes to relationships - it’s looking unsteady. Some are wondering if they might be better off alone. Where money is concerned, don’t spend what you can’t afford.
This week brings a growing awareness of your special talents. In doing so, unhappy conditions are no longer tolerated. Just don’t assume total authority on every topic at hand. It’s a sure bet that someone with more knowledge will eventually call you to question. In the meantime, bank balances need to stay healthy.
Normally, you have no problem letting others know when they have overstepped the mark but right now, someone’s marching into your territory, and somehow - you’ve let this happen. Don’t panic, and don’t lose your temper. Calmly address the matter and reclaim your own dominion. Wannabe opponents will soon back off.
Much can be achieved this week, Pisces - but you must avoid burnout. Push your energies if you really need to - but not to the point where you’re teetering on the edge. Similarly, don’t let competitors force you beyond your limits. Remember, you call the shots - not them. Upside: the week could offer extra cash.
You’re probably still confused, not quite certain whether a recent event was a dream, a nightmare or just simply fate. Confronted by surprise or suspicion, this week forces you to explore new dimensions of your talents, inner truths and affections. Out of this intense transformation you will emerge, in many ways - reborn.
We live on a planet where not everyone will always agree. End result? A battle of wills. Words may be spoken in haste and, in hindsight, with regret. Not to worry - time heals all. The true test, however, comes in learning to overcome obstacles. When one way is blocked, find another. When one method fails, devise a new one.
It’s a week to slam the door on inquisitive fingers. Whether you see others’ attention as flattery, quality control or espionage - keep your best ideas to yourself. With thinking processes clear and precise, use the latter half of the week to put new plans into motion. Instinct will help you negotiate obstacles.

OUT
Citroen on a cruise
STARTING on Saturday 25th the Citroen Club of Qld is holding a weekend run leaving 9.30 from the Maleny showgrounds. The drive will zig zag crossing all the bridges over the Mary River arriving at River Heads where the Mary drains into Great Sandy Strait. River Heads has a beaut view across to Fraser Island. This is quite a spectacular drive, so much so the organiser has been encouraged to plan it for the fourth time since 1998. The public is more than welcome to roll up to the start from 8.45 to view in excess of 20 Citroens from the 50’s to recent models. Leaving the showgrounds the group will head west along Maleny - Stanley River Rd. to Conondale via Postmans Track. Lunch is in Kenilworth. The group is overnighting at the Theebine Pub. Sunday will see them finishing the crossings for lunch in River Heads, overnighting again in Theebine.
Performances soar
AUDIENCES were treated to a special one off performance of The Night Parrot at the Maleny Community Centre on June 17. The Sirin vocal ensemble wowed with their set before soprano, Morgan England-Jones, and the Acacia Quartet performed The Night Parrot, a work by Jessica Wells that traces the story of the thought-to-be-extinct bird.

THE wait was worth it for the Maleny Golf Club Charity Day. Having been postponed due to bad weather, Maleny turned it on for the June 17 event with glorious sunshine beaming down as teams dug deep for the Hospital Auxiliary. ANZAC Day Book Donors Morning Tea Contributed by Brad Owens FOR the first time since 2019, the ANZAC Day Book Donors Morning Tea was held at Maleny State High School Library. Once again, a sumptuous spread of food, steaming pumpkin soup and hot drinks fuelled engaging conversations between students, staff and our special guests – the donors of books to the high school library to commemorate ANZAC Day 2022. This year a total of 37 new books were donated by 20 different individuals and community organisations. One donor, Jill Lillingstone, travelled all the way from Melbourne to personally donate the book ‘The Incredible Life of Hubert Wilkins’ by Peter Fitzsimons in memory of her Uncle and Maleny man, Private

Come and celebrate Beerwah High’s 30th Contributed by Lyn McDonald
Tom Lillingstone who died in Belgium during WW1. The gifted books were on special display at the morning tea for people to browse. Inside each book is a special commemorative sticker acknowledging the generous donors as a perpetual reminder to students and staff that they are living in a community that cares and values the hard-fought freedoms we often take for granted. Guests were officially thanked by school captain Hannah Portas on behalf of the students and staff. The delicious morning tea was provided by students from the Maleny High Interact Club with donations going to Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer Research.

BEERWAH State High School is celebrating its 30th year of operations and is hosting two community events on Saturday July 23, 2022. In the afternoon we are hosting a free event from 2-5pm which will include various music and dance performances from current students, a display of memorabilia in the performing arts block, a ceremony to recognise previous retired staff, as well as rolling videos of past performances and events, and a celebration of the school song. In the evening we are hosting a ticketed event from 6-11pm. This will be held in the Student Centre, where guests will receive a cocktail on arrival. It will be a canapes style event with service from our hospitality students. There will be a musical line-up of previous students who will be performing various sets, several rounds of Beerwah SHS trivia and a licensed bar, as well as displays of memorabilia and a photo booth. Past staff will be MC’ing the event. It’s definitely going to be a fun night and will be wonderful for previous students and staff to reconnect. Link and Launch for year 12s RESEARCH tells us that every year a number of young people who complete Year 12 are not engaged in education, employment or training after they leave school. While there are numerous programs and services available, navigating the system can be confusing and overwhelming for some school leavers. The Queensland Government is funding the successful Link and Launch program, and it’s now available to our young locals! Link and Launch officer, Jacqui McBride, encourages the community to support the program and young people to take full advantage of its service. “The program works with those who have completed Year 12 in the last few years, and helps young people identify opportunities that align with their goals, strengths and interests,” Jacqui explains. “I will support young people to transition into apprenticeships, traineeships, fee-free TAFE and low-cost courses, tertiary preparation or alternative entry to uni, as well as finding employment. We develop a plan together, to support their transition into meaningful long-term outcomes. Participation is voluntary, they can access as much or as little support as they want, from building a resume and job interview preparation, to university applications.” This Sunshine Coast service is hosted by Meridan State College, however graduates from any school can access the service. Beerwah State High School principal Lyn McDonald is in full support of the program. “Link and Launch will benefit our young people by supporting them to find opportunities to fulfil their potential. The service also helps enhance school

Chris Moore and Jacqui McBride. partnership with local business and community which in turn will generate many more opportunities for our students,” said Lyn. Jacqui is routinely available to meet with young people in Beerwah. Former Beerwah State High School student Chris Moore was keen to start an apprenticeship in Carpentry and with Jacqui’s support, that dream is now a reality. “I knew I wanted to be a carpenter and work with my hands, but I didn’t know where to start when it came to getting an apprenticeship” says Chris. “Jacqui gave me confidence and helped me to make it happen”. The $8 million program was piloted across four Queensland high schools in 2019 and is now operational in 30 schools across the state. It has already supported over 1,700 young people. Link and Launch is all about helping young people take the next step. To find out more visit www.qld.gov.au/ linkandlaunch or contact Jacqui on 0460 005 106.
PEACHESTER State School students have been developing essential skills in first aid through the St Johns First Aid Schools Program. Prep students are learning how to look for danger, personal safety and how to send for help; students in the middle years learn skills such as the DRSAB steps of the Action Plan and the recovery position. and the senior class enjoyed the practical CPR component of the day. Following two recent emergency helicopters and patient transfers, the students were very keen to learn how they can help in an emergency and to maintain their own safety.
Environmental champions
LOCAL schools and early education centres are growIng the next generation of environmental champions with Glass House Early Education Centre, Peachester State School, Landsborough Community Kindergarten and CandK Maleny Community Kindergarten named recipients in the latest round of the 2022 Woolworths Junior Grants. Places you can park the kids LANDSBOROUGH’S Pioneer Park is one of the top fenced parks on the Sunshine Coast according to a list of the regions favourite free play areas. As locals already know Pioneer Park is uber-popular with kids. A harnessed high-backed seat flying fox, sensory garden, swings, slides and balancing equipment is enough to keep kids occupied long enough for adults to have a decent chat and coffee. The park is also home to the Love Animals Story Seat by Dr Bronwyn Bancroft, proud Bundjalung Woman and artist. There is enough room to run, kick a ball around, pushbike or scooter. It is also wheelchair and pram accessible. Others in the top five including Nelson Park at Alexandra Headlands. A musical panel, sand and water station, boat, cubby and hammocks keep the little ones fully occupied. The fenced area is within a four hectare park where you can stroll around the lake and explore the community garden. Grahame Stewart Park at Currimundi has activities for all ages including a flying fox, rope activities, basketball court, cricket pitch, bike track and heaps more. It also has the coast’s first Changing Places public amenities block, which ensures space and equipment for people with high support needs.

music TODAY
Finding inspiration for your music making
CULTURE with Dr Michael Whiticker
SOME musicians, especially early in their career, go through periods where they feel they aren’t growing artistically. This is particularly true of those who spend a lot of time playing at home by themselves. So let’s consider a few kick starters – maybe one of them will be right for you or someone you know. Beginning with technology, which is now at everyone’s fingertips, the internet is a huge source of inspiration for musicians. You don’t need to look far to find motivating artists in your chosen field online! Just google your instrument or the style of music you enjoy or the player you’d like check out. Software or hardware based, looping is something that has taken off in recent years. This can be a source of immense fun. Singing along with, or taking a solo over what you have put down on the looper can soon turn into a song writing session. If you are a guitar player, although this tip applies to a lot of instruments, experimenting with alternate tunings can revitalise some of those old chord progressions you’ve been jamming on. It can be a source of quite an original sound. Look for example at the music of Joni Mitchell who was playing with alternate tuning from very early in her career. I may be wrong but I think she retuned her instrument (usually the guitar) for every song she wrote. I recall reading a book on song writing back in the 90s where it noted
she used more than 50 different tunings in her songs. Retreating a step to something really obvious, if you are spending too much time doing the “same old same old” at home with your music, why not get out and play in front of people? There are plenty of welcoming Open Mics around the place and live performance can bring an edge to what you are doing. It will certainly give you a focus as you prepare for what you will play, and it will get the creative juices flowing. Why not think about playing with someone else? Collaboration can be a real boon for someone used to being a solo artist or go one step further and join a choir, ukulele or djembe group. If you are lacking the confidence you feel that you need to jump in and join a group, then at least attend lots of live concerts, especially Open Mics where there will be others perhaps also hesitant about playing in public. Everyone has to start somewhere! If this all sounds a bit ho hum, ie you’ve done most or all of the above, then why not pass on some of what you know, or invite a newcomer to join a group to aid in their first steps? Sharing your talents could inspire creativity in others and what you give out surely comes back. Music creates joy in all involved so don’t be surprised if the doors you open for others inspire you to venture further in your own work, and that’s a win win!

Burritos to go at Beerwah By Jennifer Kent
FROM the streets of San Fran to a bustling corner in Beerwah, Burrito Bar Beerwah is bringing mouth-watering Mexican-inspired modern cuisine to the hinterland. Having opened their doors earlier this year in March, owner Sanjay and his team had a strong feeling the people of the hinterland would respond positively to a casual, fun restaurant which aims to bring people together. “We were excited to finally open up the restaurant to the local community and bring a new flavour and cuisine to the area,” Sanjay said. “The community here are really welcoming and we’ve had some great feedback on our menu and customer’s dining experiences. “It’s been a really great few months and we’re looking forward to continuing to get to know the local community.”
Maleny Cheese Multi-award winning dairy products from local farms available in store. SIMPLY LOCAL OPEN Café and Shop open 7 days 10am to 3pm. Great BLK local hamper products too.
It was only fitting that the ‘tex-mex’ restaurant made its way to Beerwah and for the growing hinterland population, adding the much-loved cuisine as not only a take-away, but dine-in experience has proved to be favourable. The unmistakable flavour of Mexican food is showcased across a hefty menu, and includes favourites such as burritos, nachos, enchiladas, crispy wraps, tacos, quesadillas, wings, burgers, to name a few. But it is the addition of extras that adds to an overall modern cuisine experience... chilli con carne, jalapeno toppers anyone? And for those who can’t say no to a grill, Sanjay says the 12-hour slow cooked ribs are something pretty special. Plus, you’ll find the perfect pairing with their growing drinks menu of cocktails, mocktails, wine, beer, tequila and, of course, sangria. Clearly understanding the importance of finishing off a meal with something

sweet, the menu extends to chocolate nachos and tacos and churros. Also instore is a fantastic variety of ice creams from Sweet Republick. Traditionally, Mexican food is all about bringing people together, and the team at Burrito Bar Beerwah ensure that tradition is carried on, albeit with a modern twist. Whether it’s a quick drop in for a lunch special, or a family affair, Sanjay says his team work hard to give everyone that comes through the door a wonderful hospitality experience. Keen to keep quality flavoursome food affordable, the Burrito Bar run fantastic specials all throughout the week, so whether you have a hankering for some Mexican, or want something to feed the whole family (minus the arguments!) there’s always something special on offer.

Elected With the poll formally declared, I am honoured to have been re-elected to a third term as your Federal Member for Fisher. While it wasn’t the national result we were after, I am grateful for the trust that has been placed in me to continue fighting for the people of Fisher and to hold the new government to account. While this will be different from the opposition benches, my mission remains the same: to make Fisher the place to be for education, employment, and retirement. This means building the road and rail infrastructure we need; boosting mental health services and outcomes;
with Andrew Wallace Federal Member for Fisher
backing small businesses and local manufacturers; protecting Australian families and their businesses; and protecting the unique character of our community. I will do this with singleminded devotion and conviction. I will keep my foot on the accelerator for vital infrastructure like the Sunshine Coast Rail project, to which the State and Federal Labor Governments have yet to commit funding. It is my hope that the Labor Federal Government will keep their word in supporting the project, acknowledge the will of the Sunshine Coast community, and deliver Sunshine Coast Rail. I have written to the Prime Minister and the relevant ministers accordingly. In the meantime, I will continue to fight for the things that matter to Sunshine Coast families and their businesses at a local and national level, and I invite you to get in touch to share about what matters most to you.
The winter sporting season in Caloundra and the Hinterland is kicking off with a bang this year with 33 sports clubs sharing in $66,00, including hinterland clubs like the Landsborough Loggers, the Beerwah Golf Club, Our beloved local Beerwah Sportsground, Landsborough Tennis Club, and many more! Clubs will receive the money before 30 June so they can provide extra support for volunteers and buy equipment. It was also great to get out this month to the Pumicestone Passage with the Caloundra Coast Guard, local council, and representatives of Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ). There were constructive conversations around safety and accessibility of the passage, potential sites where dredging might help with north/south access, and the usage of the Passage going forward. I’m looking forward to further discussions with MSQ and as always want to thank the Coast Guard for their tireless advocacy for the residents of Caloundra and all who enjoy our beautiful Pumicestone Passage. As we often do, our office went out to Landsborough this month to get out and about chatting with locals about the issues that matter to them in the Hinterland – thanks to everyone who came along to have a chat.

An extra big thanks to one particularly friendly local who popped in to let me know about the Free Pantry she runs in Landsborough – she’s just started it since she noticed that there’s a lot of locals around having a tough time with prices of everyday items rising every day. Learning the lessons from Covid will help nation tackle this season’s flu outbreak EXPERTS have warned that the 2022 flu season will redefine what it means for Australia to be ‘flu ready’ as the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System reported over 65,775 confirmed cases of influenza in May alone. This compares with 30,372 cases in May 2019 which was until now the highest number of confirmed cases recorded in that month. A panel of Australia’s leading influenza and biosecurity experts recently discussed the implications of flu re-emerging in 2022. According to Professor Ian Barr, Deputy Director of WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza: “Countries like Argentina have seen similar outbreaks, while Brazil saw an outbreak of Influenza A viruses in summer this year. In Australia, we’re seeing Influenza A viruses dominate with very little circulation of influenza B viruses.” “Australia is really at the forefront of the fight against flu, with a number of the viruses in this year’s vaccines being isolated at the WHO labs here in Melbourne.” Dr Jonathan Anderson, Seqirus Executive Medical Director International Regions, said that this year’s flu season will provide lots of lessons for how we prepare and implement public health strategies in the future. “Australia is in a unique position in
bowen therapy
that we are one of the first countries to face COVID and a simultaneous flu season that is similar to pre-COVID levels. It’s clear that the rest of the world will be watching our flu season closely,” Dr Anderson said. According to Dr Felicia Pradera, General Manager of Health Security Systems Australia at DMTC Limited and Program Manager - Medical Countermeasures Development at Defence Science and Technology: “Vaccines and treatments are important tools for managing infectious diseases and pandemics but it’s important that we use all the tools at our disposal and develop a whole of system approach. This includes considerations like PPE, modelling and simulation, decision support tools, medical devices, surveillance, real world evidence and more. We can take a number of lessons from COVID-19 to enable better response and recovery planning in relation to influenza and other pathogens,” she said. “From improved real time data sharing, faster sharing of research and investing in the development of platform capabilities that can then be rapidly modified or trained to a target pathogen. There’s also greater potential for us to implement and leverage public-private partnerships, similar to Operation Warp Speed in the US, to ensure we can tackle Australia’s key health priorities.”

JOHN MCGRATH – RENOVATED HOMES IN DEMAND AS NEW BUILDS AND RENOVATIONS DELAYED
McGrath CEO & Founder John McGrath
Renovating or building a new home has become a challenging process, with a shortage of raw materials and tradie labour along with rising costs making life very difficult for property owners. We’re hearing many stories of lengthy delays and increasing costs on home projects, and this is translating into a change in buyer behaviour in the residential sales market. More owner-occupiers and investors are looking for renovated homes because they don’t want to go through the same issues that renovators and new homeowners are enduring now. This is an interesting change because at the end of market booms, we typically see more demand for cheaper original or run-down homes as buyers’ budgets become squeezed by runaway price growth. Valuers at the national valuations company, Herron Todd White (HTW), note the rising demand for new or renovated homes in a report in May. Their CEO Gary Brinkworth said: “What we see now is a shift among owners who had been planning a renovation or construction. Many are weighing up whether buying an established home might be more prudent given the cost and time blowouts. Our teams have certainly spotted this trend across the country. We’ve observed that homeowners and investors alike are
being drawn to completed homes rather than those with renovation potential. “Given costs are predicted to be elevated over the coming one-to-two years, I’d venture that finished homes will not only retain their price premium for some time, but the value spread between renovated and unrenovated properties will, in all likelihood, get wider.” Gary says sellers “should be able to get a premium for a property that’s new or renovated” in the residential market today. There’s a couple of factors pushing up the cost of construction and renovations. Firstly, inflation is rising, which means the cost of most goods and services in the economy are going up. The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows inflation running at 5.1% per year. This is well above the
FOr LEasE
Reserve Bank’s target of 2-3%. Secondly, COVID-19 disruptions in global supply chains means importing enough building materials to meet demand has become near impossible. Demand is high because most countries are stimulating their economies through new infrastructure projects, so lots of countries want to buy raw materials like timber and steel. In addition, Australians amassed record savings during the pandemic, and the increased time they spent at home – including working – has made many people want to renovate and upgrade their living environments. Then there’s the effect of HomeBuilder, with latest available government data showing 137,755 applications were lodged and 84,000 grants have been paid so far. Grant recipients were all required to commence building
or renovating within 18 months of applications closing in April 2021. Thus, thousands of HomeBuilder projects are underway on top of normal new home building activity. All of this has led to a spike in demand for materials and labour, and this is pushing construction costs up at a faster rate than inflation. CoreLogic’s Cordell Construction Cost Index for Q1 2022 shows national residential construction costs increased by 9% over the 12 months to March. That’s the second highest annual growth rate on record behind the introduction of the GST, when costs increased by 10.2%. The good news is that affording a renovated property in Sydney and Melbourne has become a bit easier as both of these mega markets begin to cool off. Generally speaking, if you buy this year, you can be confident of getting a 5-10% discount on last year’s prices.

McGrath’s Room by Room Styling Your Property For Sale Checklist One of the most effective ways to generate maximum buyer competition, engage buyers at an emotional level and add significant value to your property, is to spend time preparing it for sale. To help ensure you are equipped with the right information, we have created a Preparing your Home for Sale Checklist that walks you through each room and space of your home and provides practical guidance around what you can do to each area to ensure it is ready to shine on open for inspection day. Contributed by Ken Barker WITH the advent of clear skies and balmy weather our lawns have been busy. Wednesday June 8 we played against Caloundra in the Lochwood pennants competition. Caloundra sent two players, Helen Matchett and Howard Williams. We fielded a team of three, Donna Manning, Ken Barker and Sarah Widin. Donna and Ken played the singles. Ken lost to Helen and Donna beat Howard. Sarah and Donna won the doubles. Well done, the Range, winning the match two games to one. The next day, Thursday June 9, there was a ricochet pennants match. Ranbour fielded an all-Maleny team consisting of Donna, Sarah, and Ken. The visiting team, Coolum, consisted of George Oliver and William Yip. Ken lost the singles game against George. Sarah won against William. Donna and Sarah won the doubles. Ranbour won the match two games to one. This was a good result putting us in the top teams of both competitions. Social games were played on lawn one on Thursday as well. Lynette Evans finished just ahead of Diane Horsman 12–11. Wallace Roy and Helen Andrews (8) won against Sally Adams and Kath Smith (6).
RESULTS
At the meeting, centenary badges celebrating 100 years since the formation of Croquet Association of Queensland were presented. We are very grateful to Maleny Grove for the use of their well appointed facilities. On Sunday June 12 Nick Cram and Ken enjoyed a game in which Nick stayed slightly ahead all game to win 7–6; coincidentally, exactly the same margin was reached in the game of doubles where Kath Smith and Lynette beat Stuart Craig and Wallace. Wednesday June 15 saw the first of the club championships underway with Lynette, Kath and Diane vying for honours in third division. Diane was a clear winner, with Kath runner up. The game between Kath and Lynette was close, going to golden hoop with Kath winning the battle of nerves. Well done all players on their conduct throughout the tournament. Play days are Thursday and Sunday 1pm for 1.30pm start. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Coaching is available on Saturday mornings at 8am. Our web address is https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au For details contact club president Sarah Widin on 0417 640 704.

THE BEERWAH Bulldogs women’s open team have won their last two games, winning 26-0 against the Noosa Pirates, and 48- 8 against the Nambour Crushers. Coach Rod Kerr was proud of the team for their impressive efforts, capped off with their highest tally of the season against the Crushers. “The girls have worked hard this year, it’s just unfortunate we’ve had a bit of Covid today, we’ve had a couple of ankle injuries, so it’s just a bit tough for the girls…” he said. “They get a combination going and then we lose a couple of players, but we’ve got a bye this week, and I think we’ve got about five or six players coming back in the next game.” Jordan Jackson was one among many standout players from the team, particularly against Nambour, and Coach Kerr was quite happy with her performance. “She’s a really smart little player, and has got a good footy brain, she’s always looking for some space, and she defends really well as well, so she’s a good find for us,” he said. Their first taste of points against Noosa was 10 minutes in, with Bulldogs hooker Jordan Jackson, scoring in the left corner. Following the first try, winger Kim Gray and centre Courtney Lockwood scored a try each in the first half. The second half started badly for the Beerwah Bulldogs, with the injury of
prop Kara Blake, who was helped off the field and didn’t return. The injury didn’t faze the team though, which went on to score another three unanswered tries. Lockwood had a standout game, making scoring in both halves. Keely Harth and Annette Brander also scored with the team keeping the Pirates pointless in the 26-0 thumping. The Bulldogs played Nambour Crushers at the Nambour Rugby League Club on June 18. The Bulldogs started slowly, allowing the Crushers to score first after just three minutes, but that was a minor blip for the away team. The Bulldogs responded, with Jordan Jackson scoring Beerwah’s first try of the game six minutes in, and centre Courtney Lockwood successfully converting. They scored another four tries in the first half, with Tahlea Corcoran, Tash Thorley, Jackson again, and Annette Brander all crossing the line with the team heading into the break leading 26-4. In the second half, the Doggies put their foot down with prop Keely Harth scoring 32 minutes into the game, before going off towards the end of the game with an ankle injury. Following three more Beerwah tries, Nambour managed to score the final unconverted try, bringing the final score to 48-8. The men’s A-Grade team defeated Noosa 38-12 and the Crushers by 31-10.
THE INTELLECTUAL disability (ID) Australian Ashes team lost 7-1 in their recent series against the English ID team this month. Although it was not the result they were looking for, they did win a match against England for the first time in seven years. Australia’s ID Ashes team coach Nathan Dodd said it was quite the spectacle for the team and fans.
JOEY Porter has become just the 17th student to earn his black belt under the watchful eye of Cameron Taylor from Beerwah San Training Centre. Porter passed his black belt test on the 18th of June, alongside his counterpart Lachlan Adam who graded for his second dan in his black belt. The San Training centre had Mast Lee at the grading to oversee and provide feedback, who is an 8th Dan Master and was the vice president of the US Army Combat Taekwondo team. Cameron, who has been training students for 10 years at Beerwah, said Joey, who has been on board since 2019, went through several tasks to move up to the highest belt in Taekwondo. “He did seven and a half minutes of sparring with fresh opponents each 90 seconds, then did four timber breaks including a flying kick over four people and

“The standout moment was defending 124 and winning by a single run off the last ball in a T20 international match under the lights,” the Glasshouse Country local said. “It was a fantastic moment for a lot of people.” Despite the convincing loss, Dodd said the team’s overall improvement was recognised by most, including the English team and Cricket Australia, but they should have performed a bit better. “Realistically we should have won another couple of games with a bit of luck,” he said. As for the team moral, coach Dodd said the team bonded strongly alongside the new players they had starting this year. “The guys got along great considering there were many new faces,” he said. “I have no doubt some more lifelong friendships have been made.”

Beegee’s president is May’s volunteer of the month THE MAY ‘volunteer of the month’ of the Football Queensland Sunshine Coast division was announced recently, and the honour went to the club’s very own Shaun De Courcy. Shaun is the Beerwah Glasshouse United Football Club’s president and has been volunteering for the Club for 30 years. He has been involved in the sport for 49 years. He was humbled with the recognition but said he does not do the volunteering for the praise. “It was a little bit embarrassing because you know we don’t do the work for recognition,” he said. “We do the work for the love of the game to hopefully encourage more people to play the game... but it was a little bit special.” Throughout his volunteering career at the club - better known as the BeeGee’s - he has had various roles including the coach of many junior and senior teams, being the junior vice president and the vice president.

Munro rising in softball ranks 16-YEAR-OLD Indy Munro is a rising star in softball and baseball, playing in multiple representative teams across both sports, having only starting six years ago. Her inspiration to start playing softball when she was 10, which she said was based on her brother starting to play, but has fallen in love with the sport herself. “I started playing because my older brother signed up to play and I wanted to play with him,” she said.
“I’ve done quite a lot of different roles within the club, I’m very lucky to have a strong executive team and committee members alongside me doing the best we can for the club,” he said. The love he has for the game is clear, and his passion is fuelled by his team around him and to inspire the future generations in football. “It’s a game that I love, and I’m very passionate about it and I just like to do what I can to hopefully instil the same love of the game I have to the next young breed of players coming through our club,” he said.
The Red Hornets are red hot THE TIBROS’ social netball grand final took place last week against the Red Hornets and the DC’s, with the Red Hornets smashing the opposition 41-20. In the first quarter the DC’s scored the first goal and was an even quarter throughout. But for every goal the DC’s scored, the Red Hornets would score two goals in return on average in the first quarter, with the Red Hornets GA scoring the most goals for that quarter. The Red Hornets were quite dominant in the second quarter, scoring six consecutive goals until DC’s responded with their first two goals for the quarter. DC’s ended the first half with two more goals, however the Red Hornets still had a comfortable lead of 11-23. The third quarter was the lowest scoring quarter, with the Red Hornets continuing their lead of 15-31, but the

DC’s spirits were still high despite the score. In the final quarter, the DC’s scored the most goals they had since the start of the match, starting out the quarter dominantly. But the Red Hornets fought back to ensure they held their lead, and inevitably brought home the convincing 20-41 win over the DC’s. Red Hornets centre Linda Mcrostie said it was their third grand final facing the DC’s in the Tibros’ social competition, and their fourth grand final win for their current team. “It’s a good atmosphere down here,” she said. “It’s a fun and friendly competition and it does get competitive every now and then,” Linda also said she and her team appreciate all the family support for the social netball teams who come to the games and cheer on the teams.
“I like playing in a team sport and the high intensity of playing in the older age groups.” The pitcher and short stop started out strong in softball, making the Queensland representative team after her first year. “In 2016 I played my first Queensland tournament, we went through undefeated and we won that, so it was good,” the Beerwah State High student said. “I didn’t expect to get picked, I was the first 10-year-old girl to make that team, and I didn’t think much of it because I had just started a year before.” Unfortunately for Indy, she is at a halt in softball and baseball now, after sustaining a serious injury which will stop her from playing for another nine months. “I was at the Queensland baseball training and then I was just running and snapped my ACL.” However, this won’t stop Indy’s aspirations as she hopes to go to an international representative event in America early next year to play softball at the highest level.
From Bulldogs’ to Falcons’ in less than a year A PLAYER with less than a season of league experience is one of three Beerwah Bulldogs selected for the under 16 and 17s representative Sunshine Coast Falcons teams. Under 17s Lainey Grieve and teammate Lilli-Jean Cruise along with under 16s player Matthew Poole were the three Bulldogs players selected It is quite an achievement for second rower Lainey, who is playing just her first season for a rugby league club. She played once for school league, back in grade 6 before joining the Beerwah club this year on the urging of her teammates who needed a forward for their team. Lainey said she was very excited when she found out she was selected for the team. “I felt good, it’s a good opportunity to play with new girls and stuff like that,” she said. The athletic all-rounder has competed as a gymnast and did Little Athletics when she was younger, but has now turned her focus towards playing for the Beerwah Bulldogs open women’s team. “Next year I hope to play women’s for Beerwah and see how that goes because I technically can be in the under 17s next year, but I want to try to play up in the women’s,” she said. Lainey was picked for the Under

A talk with the Almighty
A man takes it easy, lying on the grass and looking up at the clouds. As he identifies the different shapes, he begins to talk with God. “God,” he asks, “how long is a million years?” God answers, “In my frame of reference, it’s about a minute.” The man asks, “God, how much is a million dollars?” God answers, “To me, it’s a penny.” The man thinks about this for a brief period, and then asks, “God, can I have a penny?” God answers, “In a minute.”
