Hi Everyone As you go through the pages this week, you will notice the centre pages are filled with the gorgeous debutantes and their stylish partners. For those of you who don’t know what a Debutante Ball is – I have conferred with Wikipedia and this is what they have to say, “A Debutante is a young lady from an aristocratic family who has reached the age of maturity, and as a new adult, is introduced to society at a formal ‘début’ presentation”. So, I guess, our Glasshouse Country Debutante Ball is a more ‘Aussie’ style event, a little more inclusive and maybe not so much about being just for the ‘Upper Class’ but there for those who want to get involved. No doubt these young girls have gone to plenty of effort for the night and the results are just amazing; I have to say the fellas have also scrubbed up very well and it is great

to see them in their tuxedos. This year is the 17th year we have had a local Debutante Ball and it seems that its popularity is still going strong. The Glasshouse Mountains are alive with the Sound of Music

Hidden away behind the cloisters of Glasshouse Country Christian College theatre, rehearsals are frantically underway in earnest for Slice of Life Theatre Arts students and their families. Artistic director, Louise Heinrich, is bringing to life the story of the Von Trapp family singers in the upcoming production of the well-known and much loved Rogers and Hammerstein Musical, 'The Sound of Music'. The production is scheduled to come alive in the last weekend of September and first week of October 2011. The characters of the Von Trapp family singers were cast from students who attend the ‘Slice of Life’ Theatre Arts program. There are two children’s casts; The Vienna and the Salzburg and in keeping with the Von Trapp Family storyline talented and experienced family and tutors connected with the Slice of Life Theatre and the College will be making up adult cast. Ian Rix, the college vocal tutor will play the role of Captain Von Trapp. In the role of Maria is talented and gifted Carly Hampson, who graduated from Beerwah High school a couple of years ago and has since completed a year-long internship with Brisbane based Harvest Rain Theatre Company. Carly's father, Brad, has been a manual arts teacher at the college for the past eight years.

Another successful Glasshouse Trail Run

Clear skies and cool temperatures helped course records fall at the Glasshouse 100 last weekend. In fact, four runners went under the previous 100 mile race record with the new record now standing at 15h 38m. Glass House Mountains runner Bill Thompson, 68, may not have been near the front runners but he achieved the impressive goal of now completing his 11th 100 mile event in a time of 29hrs 40min. “I had a schedule and I stuck to it pretty well,” Bill said. “Highlights were cruising along in the moonlight around midnight at about the 100km mark without using lights and listening to The Quartet from Verdi’s Rigoletto. Also seeing all the fairy lights just before dawn at checkpoint 10, knowing that my wife was there to encourage me onwards.” Understandably Bill said he felt pretty weary when he crossed the finishing line. “The last 12 hours were a bit of a struggle you might say, but experience saw me through, I knew I could pull through. I was feeling reasonably good towards the end.” After the race, not only was Bill presented with his 11th ‘Mountains’ T-shirt he also received his ‘1,000 mile’ T-shirt. For Bill it’s exciting knowing that if he runs next year, he will have completed all 12 possible ‘Glass House Mountains’ during the 100 mile races. “I will have to try, won’t I?” he said. Fellow Glass House Mountains runner, Brett Standring, 38, also achieved his goal of completing the 100 mile run in under 24 hours in only his second attempt at this distance.

Gman volunteers at checkpoint 10 “I was able to run better than last year, having that previous experience helped,” he said. “My favourite moment was when my wife and kids ran with me at one of the checkpoints for a couple of hundred metres for moral support.” Ian Javes, Glasshouse Trail Runs race director, is the man who brought the event to the area in 1990, and the very first 100 mile race ever run in Australia in 1996. “This year we had 265 starting five different races, 68 started the 100 mile race, a record number. Most of the runners enjoyed the conditions; with the windy weather it was cooler than normal,” said Ian. Why does Ian think the event is so successful each year? “Being a runner myself I know what the runners want and I think that helps a lot, I can cater to their needs. The biggest challenge each year is getting enough volunteers to man all the checkpoints. It’s not easy, you’re asking some of these people to be out there all night to help the runners.” Ian says there is definitely one thing that makes all that work worth it. “Seeing the joy that some people get from achieving a challenge like doing a 100 miles,” he said.

Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-op Celebrates 75th Anniversary

The Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-operative was founded in 1936 by 19 farmers. It has remained wholly and solely owned by the shareholders and is not part of a large corporate identity. It continues to provide shareholders and the general public access to a large range of products at competitive prices. Robert Frizzo, current Chairman of the Board of Directors believes the Co-op has stood the test of time because of its service to shareholders and customers. “All our decisions are based around looking after the shareholders and producing products at the right price. We originally started out servicing the farming community and now include members of the public,” he said. In some cases, three generations have been involved with the Co-op as shareholders. “There is history within the community with this Co-op being a part of it and serving the community. So that’s what’s different about our business, that’s why we’re still here,” Robert said. “Another thing that has contributed to the

success of this Co-op is the farmers who have served on the board, from some of the oldest families in Beerwah. They put in lot of time and effort. We’re very fortunate to have the founding fathers who had the wisdom and foresight to be able to do everything they did,” he said. This has included diversifying the business as the farmers needs have diversified. Today the Co-op has over 600 shareholders. It is one of the largest employers in the area with 20 fulltime staff plus casuals. Errol Graham, Manager, said it hit home last week how long the business has been here when a customer recently mentioned how he used to ride a horse to the Co-op in 1936. They were married in England in 1961 and emigrated to Australia a few years later, but it wasn’t until last year that they officially became Aussies. Fortunately, when they made the journey across to this side of the world, they brought with them the knife they used to cut their wedding cake, which was brought out to do the honours for their Golden Wedding cake. Landsborough ceramicist, Johanna De Maine, has had one of her works of art acquired by the Parliament House Art Collection, thanks to a recommendation from Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper. Johanna who specialises in fine porcelain featuring gold leaf, has had her vase ‘Bountiful Harvest’ selected under the acquisitions category for works below $2,000. “It is wonderful for a work of art from the Sunshine Coast hinterland to be acquired for the Collection and recognised and honoured in this way,” Mr Slipper said. Her works already feature in the collections of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, and of the Governor General, and they’re also in the National Gallery of Australia, the Queensland Art Gallery, and in many regional art galleries across Australia. This latest announcement that she will now also feature in the Parliament House Art Collection at Canberra is another great achievement.

Police Equestrian Games The Police and Emergency Services Equestrian Games were held recently at Burpengary. These games are held bi-annually and are open to all serving and retired members of the Police and Emergency Services and their families. Congratulations go to Kelsey Borwick, aged 15 years, of Mooloolah Valley. Kelsey riding her horse, 'Circle K Something Burnin', competed in both English and Western events. She was successful in bringing home a host of medals which included two gold, four silver and one bronze. She competed in Western and English events on the day, receiving her two gold for Maiden Trail and Open Western Equitation. She received four silver for Showmanship, Maiden Western Pleasure, Open Western Pleasure and Open Trail. She received her bronze for Open Horsemanship and she placed fourth in Maiden Horsemanship and Open Hunter and fifth in Hunter Under Saddle Equitation. Kelsey continues a family tradition by attending the Police Games and she will no doubt be looking forward to 2013.

Talented local films documentary Landsborough resident De GreerYindimincarlie is already well-known for her amazing creations as an artist, but did you know she is also a talented musician, producer and photographer? De’s latest project was filming the documentary The Bunya Guitar. The documentary follows the life of a Maton guitar made from the Bunya Tree, which is indigenous to South East Queensland. The Bunya tree is a sacred Aboriginal tree that initiated The Bunya Dreaming festival at Lake Baroon. The guitar was donated to the fesitival by Maton, an Australian guitar company. A competition is held each year for a young person 14 years and under to become the guitar’s custodian for 12 months. The documentary follows the journey of the first custodian, Eliza Allard, and the guitar, the album she made with De called ‘Life Goes On’ and their journey together over the 12 months. “I thought it would be an amazing journey to capture on film, as a documentary about the first 12 months of the Bunya Guitars life,” De said. “I was astounded by Eliza’s original song writing, playing, and singing talent.” As any musician knows, your guitar is more than just an instrument and Eliza wasn’t looking forward to the day she had to give it back. The guitar was passed on to the new custodian at the Bunya Dreaming festival early in 2011.

A presentation on behalf of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service will be given at the Family Barbeque at the Mooloolah Community Hall on Friday, October 7 at 7.00 pm. Carl Trocki, the Volunteer Community Educator for the Eudlo-Mooloolah area, will offer a presentation and discussion on bushfire safety. The presentation will include tips on preparations we can make to ensure our families’ safety should we be faced with a bushfire situation. All are welcome.

Screenings at 10.00am, 1.30pm and 3.00pm. Entry is $5.00 per person. There will also be screenings of The Bunya Guitar on the Sunshine Coast in the coming months. De said it wasn’t always easy juggling all the commitments both she and Eliza had over the 15 months it took to make the documentary. “But the end result of the film documentary is worth everything and every experience that was had,” she said.

Ultramarathon runner heading to Glasshouse New Zealand born Andrew Hedgman, 24, admits he was a class clown at school, getting into all sorts of trouble. It was in High School that he discovered his passion in life and the clown became an ultra marathon runner. Andrew said he started ultra marathon running for the challenge. “Completing was such a satisfying feeling, I went on to do others. It’s not really the running, it’s more of the journey because they go for so long and you meet different people along the way and that’s what hooked me into ultra distance running,” he said. His passion has led him to not only completing several marathons and ultra marathons; he has achieved a feat few people have even dreamed of - running the entire length of New Zealand. Last year he completed the 2,200km run in 28 days with only one rest day, averaging around 70 to 80 kilometres per day, enduring shin splints, a torn muscle and bad weather. “There are some times when it seems like it’s just going to be so impossible but because I’ve done it before I know the feeling I get from finishing. It builds me up and gives me a bit more motivation that I can do it. When I finish it’s such a rewarding feeling and that’s what pushes me through,” Andrew said. Currently living in Brisbane, Andrew now has his sights set on the Glasshouse Mountains. On the weekend of September 24 and 25 he will be running 200 kilometres over two days to raise funds for the worldwide group World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), an organisation that helps change the lives of animals from all walks of life including bears, www.gcnews.com.au

Glasshouse Country Toastmasters recently finished an eight week Youth Leadership Course at the Mooloolah Primary School. It was a real pleasure to teach this dynamic group of 12 Year 7 students. At the graduation night, held in their beautiful new hall, on Wednesday, September 14 they all surprised their family and friends with the progress they’d made in the eight weeks of the course. Students who did not give a speech on the night took on a role as Chairman, Vice Chairman (introducing the speakers), Table Topic Master or Evaluator. They all did a terrific job. Every year the Youth Leadership Co-ordinators are amazed at how quickly the children discover their hidden talents, when guided in the right direction. There was no hesitation to come to the lectern and complete their task, no nerves, if so, they did not show it. We’d like to thank the Mooloolah School for offering this course to their students. On September 25th 2011, Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers' Co-operative will celebrate it's 75th year of trading. The Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-operative was established in Beerwah in 1936 at the local railhead as a produce loading and merchandise supply centre for the local fruit and vegetable growers. From its humble beginnings, founded by 19 local farmers, the Co-op has grown dramatically over the years to the large scale retail outlet it is today. The Beerwah area has one of the highest growth rates in the nation and the changes in the area are reflected in the type of crops grown. In the 1930's, it started out with mainly pineapples, some bananas and a small amount of citrus. Then in the 1960's a significant expansion into the tobacco industry took place. From the 1970's onwards, the industry broke into the farming of tree crops including mainly avocados, macadamia nuts, mangoes and lychees.

Community Group Updates Beerwah Lions Club – 44 years of service! 44th Charter Anniversary: Beerwah Lions Club members are proud to announce that this September the club is quietly celebrating its 44th years of provision of service to the community. At our recent meeting it was agreed that our next speaker, Debbie, will talk about e-books. More items for our forthcoming anthology were submitted and will be evaluated soon. In our ‘work-reading session’ six members provided stories on travel to, and experiences in the following places; Seoul, Paris, Portland Bill UK, Scotland, Ireland, and Malaysia. Eric had engine problems with an aircraft; Wil joined ‘Man vs Wild’ in Brisbane; Patricia struggled with a washing trolley; Betty packed for travelling with children; Joan was not impressed with a computer in bed; and Bob took us into the complexity of pineapple research. Providing opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback, meetings take place at Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Next meeting is on Friday, September, 23. Whether you are a writer, or just interested in writing, you will find a friendly welcome in this group whose members range from beginners to accomplished, published authors. At the recent meeting the group welcomed Mr Les McFadzen, who led us into his most interesting talk on ‘The History of Migration in Australia’. In the talk, he concentrated on the waves of migration to this country, mainly from the late 1800’s right up to the present day. With the early success of the first course in 2011, the group commences a second Research Beginners Course on Saturday, September 24. Held over four Saturdays (12.30pm to 3.30pm) and concluding on October 15, a few spaces still remain. The entry fee of $20.00 (which includes detailed instructions on CD) is required on registration. All activities conducted by the group, including general meetings with guest speakers (1.30pm to 4pm on third Thursday each month) are held at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra. What we need

Our District Council sends out to householders expensive brochures, telling us what to put in our two bins. Added is a list of what not to include. With mounting refuse littering local roadsides and forest verges, one wonders just what is to be done with these non-acceptable items. There are several factors outstanding. First, Council must reinstate the twice yearly inorganic collection. Second, the brown top bin for garden waste should be free, if requested. The current annual fee is not acceptable. Neither is the charge made to citizens, who themselves take goods unsuitable for further use to the local Refuse Dump for disposal. Since pensioners are now urged by the Government to remain in their homes where possible, it should be noted that some will have handed in their driving licences. Many, though otherwise able to cope, cannot lift heavy objects, such as non-working stoves or TVs. Wouldn’t it be nice, if a Council Promotion appeared, saying ‘Need help with shifting your old fridge to the road side for Monday’s collection? Ring Council beforehand.’ Great publicity for the ‘Waste Team’ and a wonderful public relations exercise! J. Valenta Landsborough

On Wednesday, September 14 there were delays on the Peachester Range of half an hour plus with traffic stretching kilometres in either direction. The maligned Traffic Controllers would have appreciated ‘Politicians Preaching Patience’ to ease their burden. On Thursday, September 15 the wait was down to 10/15 minute delays. Handmade linen sheet brought to Bankfoot House Within the Bankfoot House collection is a handmade linen sheet. It was made by Janet Fenwick, so the family story goes, back in the Fenwick’s home village of Bankfoot in Scotland, and was one of two brought to Australia when the family emigrated in 1855. Janet Fenwick was the mother of Mary Grigor nee Fenwick, who with her husband William, established Bankfoot House in Glasshouse Mountains in 1868.

Where are the Div. 1 Candidates?

Well, we see the letters from various Division 1 Candidates in various papers on various topics but where are they when it comes to shopping in Glass House Mountains Township? Well, Division 1 Candidates – you want the people of Glasshouse to vote for you but where are your voices on the changes to Glasshouse village? Have any of you come here to find out why people are so unhappy with the changes to the shopping and services precinct? Has any one of you tried to drive to and around our shops? Try buying a coffee and a cake from the bakery any afternoon from about 5.00pm onwards and just sit there and watch the traffic, where people are supposed to drive, where people are driving anyway and the people who are just walking through the garden beds they didn’t want, because they are in the way. Try buying a loaf of bread and a renting a dvd – in that order. Does anybody know those one way signs in the IGA car park – the ones that say 'Entry Only' and 'Exit Only' – they are on private land, not a public road. Is there actually any requirement on us to obey them? Where is our current Councillor, who is still being paid to represent us? TC, Glass House Mountains

Bruce Highway upgrade

Well, last Tuesday we had another tragic motor vehicle incident on the Bruce Highway just north of Brisbane. This incident caused the normal grid lock for residents of the Sunshine Coast with extensive delays on returning home after work or business in Brisbane with some people having four (4) hours added to their normal 50 minute commute. Our local politicians want us to sign a petition to have this highway upgraded to six (6) lanes between the Bribie Island turn off and Caloundra, as they say, to improve our commute to and from Brisbane. This petition is completely wrong, in my opinion, because with only one designated highway north of Brisbane as soon as there is a traffic incident we again have another grid lock situation Any petition that I would sign would have to do with improving Old Gympie Road as an alternative route north to the Sunshine Coast and beyond. This improvement would also have to include adequate signage between the two (2) northern roads advising motorist of an alternate route to the north or south when such an incident occurs. Considering the sheet is around 160 years old, it is in excellent condition. It goes without saying it is no longer used on beds. The village of Bankfoot, Perthshire, was one of the hubs of the Scottish cottage linen industry during the early nineteenth century. Until the Industrial Revolution brought mechanisation, the cottage linen industry thrived, with many villagers growing flax and using hand looms to weave linen cloth in their own homes. Bankfoot village was chiefly inhabited by people employed in weaving and all the associated work. As well as hand loom weavers, there were those engaged in spinning and winding yarn. In some families, the process of extracting linen fibre from the stem of the flax, preparing it for spinning and eventually weaving it into linen, was all carried out in their cottage. It’s more than likely that Janet Fenwick was a linen weaver in this cottage-based industry. Possibly the whole family worked in the linen industry, too. Mechanisation meant the end of the cottage industry, although this change took place over a long period of time, from the late 1700s to at least the mid 1800s. The factory system reduced the cottage system to very small areas. By the mid 1800s, the plight of the hand loom weavers was serious. The amount of money they made from their work decreased steadily and eventually ceased as factories took over. The Fenwicks emigrated to Australia in 1855, right at this time of great change in the linen industry. Alongside the effects of overpopulation and the potato famine, we believe their emigration could have been influenced by the lack of employment in the Perthshire district. Fashion Parade at Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day See recycled wares and flares from the Op Shop Fashion Parades at the Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day, Sunday, October 16, 10.00am 3.00pm at the Mooloolah Community Centre, 43 Bray Road, Mooloolah. Fashion Parade coordinator, Niki Pratt, said the models are geared up to show the stylish numbers from the Op Shop. “We have models to suit a good range of items. Some of the models include kids and teenagers along with Rob from the Mooloolah Fire Brigade and Mel from the local bakery. “The models will be wearing casual-modern clothes suitable for stepping out. We hope to show people the value and community-pride of the Op Shop. For no more than $2.00 an item, the volunteer-run Op Shop has good quality, nice clothes that people could wear regularly. So it’s affordable for everyone,” Niki said. The Mooloolah Community Centre Op Shop recently extended its opening days to Fridays. It is now open Tuesdays to Fridays, 9.00am – 1.00pm each week. Other entertainment at the Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day includes live music, an animal farm, pony rides, giant slide, jumping castles, dunking machine, face painting and market stalls. There will be free plants from Sunshine Coast Council, and giveaways galore with prizes announced throughout the day with the giant raffle wheel. Disco Cancelled The Disco planned by the Interact Club and Glasshouse Rotary to be held at the Glass House Hall on Saturday, September 24 has been cancelled.

It is time again for the Caloundra Model Railway Association Sale and Display Day to be held at the Caloundra Arts Centre Assoc. building (North Street Caloundra) opposite the Rydges Oasis resort on Saturday, October 8 from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Entry is free. Members of other Clubs are bringing their show layouts complete with buildings and scenery. There will also be a working LEGO Rail Collection and three large LEGO cranes plus one of the smaller ‘TT’ scale layouts and a bookshop. This will bring back some childhood memories to many visitors. An assortment of preloved railway rolling stock, great books and magazines, engines, track, buildings and electrics will be on sale. It's Spring – and that eagerly anticipated event, Glasshouse Country Orchid Society’s Annual Spring Show is now only days away. This Friday, September 23 and Saturday, September 24 the Beerwah Community Hall will again be filled with colour as the members of local Sunshine Coast Orchid Societies – Caloundra, Nambour, Maroochydore, Noosa and Gympie, along with Bribie Island, Pumicestone and Caboolture, join with Glasshouse Country Orchid Society to showcase the wonderful diversity of orchids which can be grown in our region. There will also be a wonderful display of ferns – with the grower on hand to answer questions and talk about the finer points of growing. Check out the floral art, both displays and sales, with orchids as the central theme, and make time to relax for a cuppa and a chat. Orchid club members will be giving demonstrations so you can learn the best way to re-pot and care for your orchids - at 10.00am and 2.00pm on Friday and 10.00am on Saturday. Swing into Beerwah for Toni Pollard Band The Toni Pollard Band play fast jumpin’ jazz / swing New Orleans style which will get your toes tapping for you to relive some of the classic songs from the early 1900’s Swing Era at the Beerwah Hotel on Sunday, September 25. Toni Pollard Band Known to mix the classics with their own street flavour, the band delivers high-powered rhythms in the style of Cab Calloway, Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington; songs like ‘Everybody Loves my Baby’,’ Blue Drag’, ‘Backwater Blues’ and ‘Egyptian Ella’ are given new life by this four piece tenor sax, guitar and rhythm band. Toni’s vocals fit this style like a glove, with elements of Sarah Vaughan, Bessie Smith, Anita O’Day and Ella Fitzgerald. Greatly influenced by her mother, a ragtime / stride piano player from NZ, Toni is a graduate of the QLD Conservatorium of Music. Her mastery of jazz rhythm guitar is evident during the often complex rhythms and melodies. Elise Bosse studied music extensively in Boston, Massachusettes and has performed in USA and Europe, with influences like Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker and Lester Young. She can mix it up playing hard-blowin hot swing and bop then wooing you with her rich, mellow tones. Elise’s tenor style is a big feature of the band’s music. The rhythm section keeps the band tight during their sometimes frenetic sets with Tim Kemp on bass and Jeff ‘Tex’ Austin on drums and percussion instruments of the swing era.

Kidney Disease rates

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare warns cases of endstage kidney disease (ESKD) that are treated with dialysis or kidney transplantation will increase over the next decade. Australia’s ageing population and increasing rates of diabetes (the most common cause of treated ESKD) are estimated to contribute considerably to the predicted increase. Energy Sales

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission advises that it is concerned about misleading conduct by door-to-door energy firm sales by energy firms, particularly when it involves the elderly and those with limited skills in English. The ACCC warns that misleading practices will attract severe penalties for each contravention of the guidelines of up to $220,000 for individuals and as high as $1.1 million for companies. Retailers need to ensure that the agents they employ for door-to-door marketing are complying with the law. If a retailer’s agent breaks the law, not only is the agent liable, but the retailer is as well. Men’s Sheds offer mateship and more

Most backyards have a shed and often it’s a retreat for the man of the house. It’s a place to potter and ponder and therefore it’s little wonder that the recently introduced men’s sheds are springing up all around Australia. The Sunshine Coast has its share and right here in Beerwah, men gather to do......well, to do what men do and that’s be comfortable in the company of their mates. Apart from making and mending things, learning skills from each other and generally having a natter about the footy, men’s sheds provide an outlet for other blokes to talk to each other about things which men normally keep to themselves. Most men have learned from our culture not to talk about feelings and emotions and there has been little encouragement for them to take an interest in their own health and well-being. Men’s sheds provide that – but only if you want to take part. For instance, health wise, prostate cancer is the elephant in the room for many men. It’s not something they generally like to talk about, but the fact remains that one man in 11 is likely to be diagnosed with the condition by the age of 75. The survival rate is encouraging but treatment can leave men with negative effects and it would be easily to be drawn into isolation. A group of blokes who have undergone the same condition are bound to find comfort in talking about it themselves. Men’s sheds give us guys the opportunity to do that sort of thing. They offer a safe and busy environment where we can find all sorts of activities and advice in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship. Importantly, there is no pressure. Men can come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that’s all they’re looking for. Women have been mixing and discussing all sorts of things since time began. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

As a Christian I am always shocked when someone who claims to be a Christian does something terribly wrong. Like most people I think if this person really claims to be a Christian then they would never do such a thing. Then in a moment of genuine honesty I find myself sometimes thinking if I was God there is no way I would even consider letting this person in. As I read my bible I am struck with the continual reminder that every human struggles with sin and with doing wrong. Most of us have the ability to hide it and cover it up - but we all do things that are wrong. The bible says the heart is deceitfully wicked - in other words we can do wrong and we don’t even know. In fact, many times we actually think it’s the right thing to do, but we are fooled and tricked not by anyone else but ourselves. That’s why sometimes it’s so hard to deal with people. We can see they have done wrong but they are thoroughly convinced they are in the right, because like us we are all deceived and fooled by our own hearts and thinking. When we become a Christian, God, knowing full well what we are like with our deceptive self thinking, forgives us and then says we now belong to Him as His special friends. God then begins a long and sometimes painful process of transforming us into the sort of people who can be friends with God. It’s not an instant transformation, it’s a journey and a process but it’s one that has begun and will eventually be fulfilled.

God slowly changes us to make us into the sort of people you would expect to follow Jesus. This all takes time and the truth is God has some pretty rough material to work with. God knows that. He knows we will keep messing up but the wonderful thing about God is that he keeps forgiving. Unfortunately some people claim to be Christians and take this forgiveness for granted and use it as an excuse to continue to do wrong. God calls these people hypocrites. There is a huge difference between battling with an issue and just abusing God’s kindness. God is in the forgiving business and he says that when he forgives someone that person is now changed. For some people that change takes a long time and can at times be almost unperceivable, but God changes people. One day that change will be complete but we are not there yet. In the meantime, I still struggle with my own sin and deceptive heart and thinking. That’s why I will always try (at least) to be slow to judge others and I am grateful to God that He treats me in the way I would hope to be treated and not in the way I think (sometimes) He should treat others.

Blood, Sweat and Cheers Well this is the last you will hear from me this netball year. What a wonderful and productive season the Tibro’s Club has enjoyed. We have achieved an enormous amount this year and hope to keep the ball rolling in 2012! What an exciting lead-up to the finals we've had with seven Tibro’s teams making the finals. The Tigereyes, Pearls, Emeralds, Diamonds, Gems, Opals and Rubies made the semi-finals. The Gems went straight through to the grandfinal. The Pearls, Emeralds and Rubies played the preliminary finals with the Rubies making it through to their grand final. All games were very tough. Grand final nerves were a plenty on Saturday, September 10 with the Rubies and the Gems both playing their Grand finals at 8.30am. The Rubies played hard but were defeated. Great season girls! The Gems went into their game as favourites but had a good battle when the Currimundi Panthers came out fighting. The Gems came away with the win 23-18 and had only lost one game all season which was to the Panthers. Club presentation was a fun evening and we are looking forward to a great 2012 season with many exciting plans already in place for the Club. We would like to take this opportunity

The 2011 season wound up for the Bulldogs with our Presentation Night being held at the Landsborough Sports Club on Saturday Night. Mal Brough compared the night which was attended by a big crowd and they watched with anticipation as the Major Awards were decided by the 3-2-1 Points awarded throughout the season. For the record, the Best and Fairest Award Winners were as follows. Neil Geritz (A-Grade) Wayne Morrisby (Reserve Grade) Luke Compton (Under 18) Nic Roberts (Under 16) and Jack Bobbins (Under 15). Last Wednesday’s ‘Jackpot Triples’ proved a windfall for both the winners and runners-up of the day who both also shared the $500.00 jackpot. The draw of the cards for the day’s event was for the ‘lowest winning score’ which was won by Dennis Hume, Jack Timm and Di Hunt with a score of 23 followed by Denise Sinton, Brian Fogarty and Barry Richardson with 24 points. The jackpot was drawn for a +9 which both teams had as their margin. The lucky draw card prize went to Maurie Dawes, Di Sutherland and Josef Albrecht. Business Bowls commenced on Wednesday night with 16 teams of triples competing for the 2011 Spring Series. Winners of Round 1 were ‘The Force’ with 106 points over ‘Matilda’ on 105. ‘Troppos’ were a close third on 94. The handicapper will endeavour to even the teams out for next week. Thursday morning’s game of ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Anne Howard and Tony Verdonck on a count back with 2 wins +44. Friday night bowls kicked off last week with three games of consistency pairs play. Recently a Team of ex-Servicemen representing the Queensland RSL Bowling Association Sunshine Coast Zone attended the 4th National Diggers Bowls Carnival held at Dubbo NSW. The games were Three Bowl Triples played over four days and Sunshine Coast entered two teams which fared very well and even brought home some prize money (“B” Team). Team A consisted of Ken Chamberlain, Roy Howard and Dave Fitzgerald and Team B were Peter Moore, Barry Johnson and Bob Moss. All of the bowlers with the exception of Bob Moss (Glasshouse Country Bowls Club) are members of Pelican Waters Bowls Club. A great time was had by all members of the team as friendships were renewed and new ones made. The Venues were great and the weather was kind, with the exception of the mornings when some of the vehicles had this cold white stuff on it called frost, which they had not seen on their vehicles before. It is hoped to enter more teams for next year’s competition.

Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 We will have a chat this time about another very common bromeliad – Tillandsia usneoides. This species has several different common names ‘Spanish Moss’ or ‘Old Man’s Beard’ and has been used for all sorts of jobs. I have read that it has been used in the lining of saddles. Spanish Moss is a fantastic plant and is seen in many films set in the deep south of the US, hanging in dense strands from large trees. These plants do very well outdoors in our subtropical climate. The tiny plants are made up of silver-grey strands forming great beards of moss over time. Spanish Moss is quite different from all other Tillandsia. Its thin leaves 2cm to 5cm long grow at intervals along a slender stem covered with silver scales. The stem may grow many metres long making it a very striking and different plant to hang from trees or cork bark. Individual pieces can be broken off and hung over any object with ease. Over summer, tiny yellow-green flowers may appear on short stalks in the axils of the leaves. When these appear in large numbers, on still days the musky fragrance is very appealing. Seeds from this plant can be scattered over branches of trees, and with regular watering, will quickly form clumps and then strands.

Tillandsia usneoides prefers light shade and good air movement and does well when misted regularly with rainwater, or hung outdoors in the rain. An occasional mist with a very dilute foliar feed is also beneficial. This plant is wonderful for making living curtains to screen off unsightly areas or to make a mysterious entrance to a section of the garden. It is a very hardy plant and will survive on neglect. This plant like most Tillandsia is an epiphyte or air plant.

Spring has sprung all over the Sunshine Coast and one of our local native wildflowers, the Hairy Bush Pea, is exploding with blooms. Usually found on the fringes of eucalypt forests, the Hairy Bush Pea will flower heavily for a couple of months in late winter and early spring. It grows to about 2m but we recommend pruning it around 1.5m to maintain a bushier shrub. It has lovely soft new growth and a mature plant has a slightly weeping effect and looks great amongst a mixed native bed. Another benefit is that it attracts the gorgeous Fringed Blue Butterfly.
