SEPTEMBER 21 2016
Hi Everyone
W
e have a couple of big stories this week; one being the almost billion dollar plans for the Caloundra Interchange and the upgrade to the section of the Bruce Highway from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway. The local level of dissatisfaction with the proposed plans was a story that we followed extensively. It is great to see that Main Roads have listened and the design has been significantly changed with wins for the business operators at Aussie World, and the local Palmview / Glenview residents as well as the Save the Steve Irwin Forest Group. While this hasn’t been achieved 100% there have been some serious concessions made by the engineers. Our second ‘Big Issue’ story is about the Maleny Credit Union. It has played a significant role in the Hinterland Community and to keep the organisation relevant and viable change is required to their business model. Last week we attended the first of their ‘Information Meetings’ to look at how the Board proposed to make it happen. We have included a summary of what happened at the meeting and we plan to keep readers updated as this process continues. Regards, Happy reading.

Local News School of Arts Community Hall 1916 – 2016 By Lea Parkes
A highlight of the recent ‘Back to Glass House’ celebration was the launch of the book ‘School of Arts Community Hall, Glass House Mountains 1916 – 2016’ that was compiled especially for the celebration by Hall Committee member Elaine Reeves.
While Elaine doesn’t claim that the book is the comprehensive history of the hall, it is a wonderful overview of how the hall came about and the service it has provided for the local community for the past century. The book’s content reflects numerous discussions with long-time residents, searching in newspapers, doing research and collecting photos, with some of the photos that captured events such as fancy dress balls, weddings, debutante balls and the pineapple festivals. It also incorporates the history of the local CWA branch, the local RSL, Indoor Bowls Club, and the connection with the Glass House Mountains State School. Also featured is how the hall has been managed over the years, as the minute books for the whole 100 years are still in existence; the book includes a list of all of the names of those that have

(back) Peter Ross with John Winterhoff, (front) April Anderson Knijf-Ross, Elaine Reeves, Aileen Winterhoff and Rita Sengstock served as President of the hall over the time. One outstanding achievement is the contribution of the current President, John Winterhoff who has taken on the role for the past 50 years (yes this isn’t a typo) from 1966 – 2016. The book is a great reference for those that would like to know more about the history of Glass House Mountains township and there are still books available for purchase at Glass House Mountains Newsagency.

Bruce Highway upgrade features A ground-breaking new interchange design to improve traffic management will be a key part of a major Queensland road project, with the contract awarded for a $929.3 million upgrade to the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway. The funds have been allocated on an 80 / 20 basis with the Federal Government providing $743.4 million to the project, with the Queensland Government committing $185.9 million. Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester and Queensland Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey announced a Fulton Hogan Seymour Whyte joint venture had won the contract for the project, which will ultimately reduce congestion and travel time for motorists. “This project involves widening the highway to six lanes, as well a major upgrade to the Sunshine Motorway interchange and reconfiguring the Caloundra Road interchange to a Diverging Diamond interchange,” Mr Chester said. “This intersection zone sees the most crashes on the Bruce Highway and it urgently needs a new approach to traffic management for the roughly 60,000 vehicles that use it every day. “The ‘Diverging Diamond interchange’ design is a first for Australia, and could be used in future projects across the country. It has been used with great success in the US since 2009 and will improve safety for traffic moving between the Bruce Highway and Caloundra Road.” Minister Bailey, who was onsite, said the upgrade to the Bruce Highway had also seen
community feedback incorporated into the design layout. “This is a big win for the community as it will create safe and direct access to local businesses and homes, as well as a future connection to development in Palmview,” said Minister Bailey. “A new service road will also be built on the western side of the Bruce Highway between Steve Irwin Way and Tanawha Tourist Drive. “The design will also significantly reduce the impact to the Beerwah State Forest. This means the Caloundra Road interchange will be contained to the east of the Mooloolah Cemetery and will no longer impact environmentally sensitive areas to the west. “An average of 694 direct jobs will be supported over the life of the project, which is fantastic news for the Sunshine Coast community.” On top of the road announcement, a motion was tabled in parliament by Steven Miles MP, Minister for the Environment and National Parks on September 15 to transition 745 hectares of the Beerwah State Forest into National Park status, adding further to the protection of the forests surrounding Steve Irwin Way. The motion will sit in parliament for a statutory 28 days before being voted on. Key environmental advocacy group, Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC), which has been supporting the efforts of the local campaign from Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest group, acknowledges the efforts of the project team to deliver an innovative design for the Caloundra Road-Sunshine Motorway upgrade.
Don’t risk your business:
Common insurance mistakes uncovered Running a business takes work. Real Work. You know this. You live this. But imagine that the business you’ve worked so hard to build, is hit by the unexpected. You then find out you’re not correctly insured and you have to watch all your hard work go to waste. Unfortunately, underinsurance is all too common amongst small businesses. According to the Insurance Council of Australia, it’s estimated that 70% of underinsured and uninsured businesses are affected by a major event such as a legal claim, earthquake, fire or storm never recover. Recent research conducted by the Cameron Research Group shows that when it comes to small business owners… • 77% have no Business Interruption Insurance • 56% have no Personal Accident Insurance • 39% have no Business Liability Insurance • 60% have no Burglary Insurance In fact, many business owners are unaware of the types of insurance products that they need. • 38% not heard of Business Interruption Insurance • 41% not heard of Machinery and Electronic Breakdown Insurance • 29% not heard of Tools of Trade insurance/General Property Insurance Insurance can be a confusing product to purchase. Australian first design “It is a vast improvement on previous designs and had to be,” SCEC spokesperson Narelle McCarthy said. “While impacts, such as losing core tracts of critically endangered lowland subtropical rainforest and koala habitat, are not to be ignored nor underestimated, the motion by Minister Miles to progress the dedication of 745ha of the high conservation value Beerwah State Forest into the Mooloolah River National Park is most welcome.” Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle welcomed the State and Federal Governments’ announcement of the tender and revealing of the new layout. Mr McArdle has worked with both the Save the Steve Irwin Forest group and local business people who have been fighting for a number of years regarding protection of the forest and the direct exit ramps (Exit 190) to local business. “Happily the Government has listened to the community and the outcome will be significant for the environment (with the footprint on the Steve Irwin Forest being reduced from 24 hectares to between 6-8 hectares), the local economy and the community,” he said. “The changes to entering Aussie World are similarly welcome. The businesses at Aussie World have long believed the old plan for removing the ramps put their business at risk.” Steve Amos, operator of the Aussie World Garage, said he was very pleased with the result. “We not only maintain southbound access, we in fact get a vastly improved northbound access plus additional entry points to Aussie World businesses,” Mr Amos said.

“I am very happy with the outcome.” Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said it was great to see smaller, tier-two companies being awarded the contract which gives them a greater share of the finances than if they came into the project as sub-contractors. He also recognised that the design will see motorists on Caloundra Road seamlessly cross from driving on the left side of the road to the right side of the road as they negotiate the interchange. “The benefit of this crossing is that right-turning traffic does not have to give way to opposing traffic, making the highway both safer and faster for Caloundra Road motorists,” Mr Wallace said. “Motorists will then switch back to standard leftside driving on the other side of the interchange.”
• Forest loss kept to minimum • No impact to Mooloolah Cemetery • Direct access off highway onto Pignata Road (south bound) • New car pooling facility along Pignata Road • New cycleway and pedestrian paths • Better than proposed access to Aussie World and Daisy’s Place

Australia Zoo is incredibly proud to announce the birth of two ring-tailed lemurs, the first to be born at the Zoo! Spindles the ring-tailed lemur, has safely given birth to her first twin babies after waiting a short four months with dad Rahona, who stays close. Spindles has been carefully nurturing her new arrivals, born on August 24, and is a natural mother who tends to their every need. Clinging to mum’s front and joining her as she climbs and manoeuvres through trees, it won’t be long until these babies start to go on their own adventures to explore their home. Monica Marks, zookeeper at Australia Zoo’s Africa department and main carer for the lemurs, has confirmed that the twins are doing extremely well and are already keen to explore the world; they have even started to ride on mum’s back to better take in their surroundings! “We’re so thrilled about the arrival of these gorgeous new babies! With the dwindling number of ring-tailed lemurs in the wild, it’s so exciting to be able to celebrate the Zoo’s successful breeding program. "While there aren’t exact figures of how many wild lemurs are left, they are on the endangered list, which means maintaining a healthy and diverse population here at the Zoo is a great way to help provide insurance for future generations,” said Monica. Habitat loss and deforestation are the main causes for the decreasing number of lemur populations
Photography by Ben Beadon and having troops at Australia Zoo for guests to interact with and learn about, raises great awareness for the conservation of the species. While these two babies will stay off display with mum for the time being to slowly integrate into a troop, Australia Zoo has 10 new lemurs gracing Bindi’s Island, to give visitors a variety of options to meet these exotic beauties!

Maleny netballers go into battle The Caloundra District Netball Association recently had their Grand Final day and despite being a small club, the Maleny Netball Association had three teams that made it to the finals. This is quite an achievement for our club given that there are eight other clubs involved in the competition, many of which are serviced by larger communities, with more players and teams than our small community can muster. The three Maleny teams were the Moonbeams (under 12s), the Blackhawks and the Lunars (division 5, 12+ years). Although the Moonbeams were eventually beaten by the Moffat Beach Sharks 22 to 26, they made the Sharks fight for their win and the outcome was not certain until the last minutes of the game. After a trying season, they should be proud of their final score. The Blackhawks vs Lunars game was also a thriller, with both teams staying in goal range of each other for most of the game. At the end though, it was the Blackhawks who were triumphant with a final score of 34 to 27. The sportsmanship of these girls must be applauded as many of them had played on the winning team last year, so it was not easy to be in competition with friends, but all girls made their cheering (and screaming) parents proud. For many on the Blackhawks team, this was the third time they had won the Grand Final - a huge achievement for Maleny netball. Netball continues into the fourth term with

I heard that Embracia were building a new home at Woodford which would have a smaller number of residents residing in the Memory Support Community. Every time I am here the staff are interacting with all the residents and my husband is contented.

MCU planning the road ahead Last Thursday night a group of 60 plus members of the Maleny Credit Union (MCU) met at the Maleny Community Hall for what was basically a briefing on the work that the Board has been doing to work out the way forward for the organisation. With their profits flat-lining and a loss recorded for this year, and the challenges they face through margin pressure, falling rates and competition, the Board of Directors don’t believe that continuing to operate as ‘business as usual’ is a long-term option. While the organisation has been operating as leanly as possible, it is now facing additional expenses of investing in a new IT system which will be a significant cost. MCU currently operates under Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) regulations and as a microbank with a small capital position, their growth is restricted, and with increased competition MCU is struggling to remain relevant and viable in the changing playing field. In the early 1990s there were around 600 mutual Credit Unions, with MCU being one of the last to be established. These days there are only around 80 Credit Unions across the country. Many of the organisations that no longer exist merged with other organisations. However the complete rejection of a merger proposal put to MCU members in 2011, has seen the current Board work through a range of other options. CEO Bob Malcolm said if there was an easy solution, everyone would be flocking to it, but the challenges including margin pressure, IT and compliance costs are costly and complex. “While we are looking at our future options, what
By Lea Parkes
(back) Board Members Matthew Green and Bob Swales, (front) Heather Cameron, Sarah Davies, Wendy McTainish and CEO Bob Malcolm remains as important to the Board is retaining the organisation's values and to continue to provide the personal services along with meeting the expectation of service delivery of today’s members / customers,” he said. The current board is proposing that the organisation change their business model from a ‘microbank’ and join the Alliance Bank model – with Bendigo and four ex-Credit Unions. The benefits of this approach would be more services for members, it would be consistent with the objects of the company, MCU would be able to retain its Maleny identity along with a continuity of financial services, member investment shares would be repaid, and ownership of the Maple Street building would be retained. The other alternatives that have been considered are business as usual (which isn’t viable); merger
– which isn’t acceptable to members; other Partner arrangements, which unfortunately are not yet functional; or winding up the organisation which carries significant costs and leaves the community without a local financial service. Not surprisingly there were many questions directed at the Board during the meeting, covering a range of concerns and after all of the discussions it appeared that most people in the room seemed satisfied with the Board, and the broad level of information provided, with some members keen to see more specific details regarding the numbers behind the different options. The Chair of the Board, Sarah Davies, made it very clear on the night that the meeting was just the first in a number of information meetings that will be held, and that over the time more information would be provided to members, where it was legally possible.

The September Open Studio Trail She also reminded members in attendance that nothing can change without their support along with the vote of members, and there would be a number of steps as part of this stage, before the opportunity for members to vote. “There will need to be changes to the Constitution, which will require a vote of members, then there will need to be another vote on accepting or otherwise, the alliance proposal.” CEO Bob Malcolm stressed how important it is for the future that the organisation can provide for both community members personal banking as well as small business banking needs and give them access to contemporary internet and online banking, as well as a bigger and better loans portfolio, and a wider range of products including eftpos and credit cards. “This proposal would mean that MCU could achieve all of these things as well as having additional funds that can be allocated to community projects that make Maleny a better place to live, and retaining jobs and investment in the community,” he said. When asked for her comment, former Board member Robyn Grivell said she thought the evening was well presented, well thought out, and she liked the way that the options were presented and the pros and cons were provided. One founding MCU member in the audience made the point that when the credit union was originally formed those involved were mostly under 40 years old and they Robyn Grivell were keen to create change. Now 30 years on the same people were in the room, however there was quite a lot more grey hair and it seems that many are now scared of change. Barry O’Connell said he came along on the night ready to be against any sort of ‘take over’. However he was pleased to hear the proposal, and happy that the Barry O’Connell members would retain ownership of the building, and he was satisfied with all of the answers provided.

Our feature artist this month is Deann Cumner, a painter living and working from her farm, 'Fig Tree Hill'. Her work is mostly Contemporary Figurative or abstract Landscapes and Cityscapes. The paintings are nearly always from the imagination, and are often whimsical, and quirky, mainly executed in tar / shellac / oils. She also draws figures, using charcoal and / or graphite. Morning tea for special client The team at Beerwah Active Physio were really pleased to be able to celebrate one of their regular clients Pat Burt's 90th birthday with a morning tea. Pat has been coming in to see us for over 15 years (since 2001), mainly to take part in our exercise classes and individual exercise sessions. We’ve always been impressed with her independence and persistence with her exercises
and believe this has been an important factor in Pat being able to stay in her own home, living independently. Pat is so popular with all our staff that we wanted to help her mark this very special occasion.

Ladies visit Alpaca farm
The Glasshouse Country Women’s Social Group visited the Sunline Alpacas Farm in Palmwoods on Wednesday, September 14. The women’s group thanks Jill and Jeff Willis who opened the farm for them to meet the charismatic Alpacas and tell the group all about their traits. The women saw the soft fleece freshly shorn off the alpaca’s backs and babies that had recently been born. The women’s group will next meet for a cuppa and social chat at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday, September 28, from 12.30pm - 2.30pm. $2.00 donation. All welcome. Roads Minister meets locals at Landsborough State Minister for Roads, Road Safety and Ports, Mark Bailey MP, came to the Landsborough Sports Complex on Sunday for a community forum on all things roads. An audience of about 50 locals listened intently as Minister Bailey reported on some of the Government’s Main Roads achievements in the Sunshine Coast region. The Minister outlined completed projects such as the long-awaited Reed Street and Bowen Road traffic lights in Glass House Mountains, and works in progress such as the three new roundabouts near the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. There were questions from the audience on a variety of local issues, including increased traffic on Peachester Road, the proposed rail overpass for Landsborough and, of course, the Bruce Highway. The discussion then turned to the newly announced Caloundra Interchange design. The Minister outlined the benefits of the Australianfirst “diversion diamond” design for local businesses and residents, the environment and road safety. Strong local support for Legacy Week Legacy Week is Australia’s annual iconic fundraising campaign which began back in 1942 to raise awareness and funds for the families of our incapacitated and deceased Veterans. It is held in towns and cities big and small across the country including Glasshouse Country. This year the event ran from Sunday, August 28 to Saturday, September 3, and three of our local Legacy Laurel Club members were dedicated to the task of selling Legacy Merchandise via their three locations outside the Commonwealth Bank in Beerwah, outside Beerwah IGA, and at Buck’s Bakery at Landsborough. The combined funds raised by Desley Hooker, Mavis Ross and Elizabeth Goodall was almost $5,400.00 which shows the generosity of our community. Both the ladies efforts, and the support of the businesses that provide space for the ladies to do their sales, is genuinely appreciated by Legacy. Local Legattee Brian Ferguson called into Landsborough to present a certificate of appreciation to Desley Hooker and owners of Buck’s Bakery, Tim and Paula Watson. The funds raised from Legacy Week help Legacy continue to assist approximately 80,000 widows and 1,800 children and people with disabilities Australiawide, with essential services such as, counselling, special housing, medical, advocacy and social support.

Living Guided Adventure Tours now operating throughout Sunshine Coast Hinterland By Sonia Clark Winnie Shiroma and Steve Grainger are behind a new local Hinterland tourism venture that seeks to encourage visitors to unplug and reconnect with nature. They have recently started a personalised guided wildlife and bushwalk adventure tours company that visits a number of picturesque areas across the Hinterland. Owner Steve Grainger is keen to share his knowledge of the bush, wildlife and promote the unique beauty of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Previously living in Port Douglas, he ran guided tours in Far North Queensland, and over the years he has trekked and bushwalked his way around the world. Steve is an accredited Savannah Guide and World Heritage Wet Tropics Guide, and as an avid bushwalker himself, enjoys sharing his experience and knowledge with locals and visitors. Relocating locally from North Queensland late last year, Winnie and Steve realised that for such a stunning region there was not a lot of guided bushwalks being offered that allowed people the opportunity to learn more about local flora and fauna. Recognising the benefits in our busy modern life of slowing down, getting away from our electronic devices and reconnecting with nature they decided to launch the business in March this year. “We think that there is so much that the Sunshine Coast Hinterland has to offer both for a domestic and international market. The area is just so unique with its abundance of natural beauty, birds and wildlife,” explained Steve. With a plan to provide interpretive sensory adventures in some of the most beautiful forests and parks that are off the beaten track, the walks cater for small groups up to seven people. They cover the region of Glasshouse Mountains, D’Aguilar National Park, Conondale Range, and Blackall Range, to Cooloola Recreation Reserve. Currently they offer two types of tours – a Bushwalk Adventure or a Wildlife Bird Watching Adventure which can be enjoyed as either full or half day trips. The tours also incorporate visits to local towns, historical sites and hidden treasures in our region. For more details about the tours, what’s included and pricing please visit www.tropicaltreks.com.au or like their Facebook page.

Picture of the Month – the Daintree Many mangrove forests can be recognised by their dense tangle of prop roots that make the trees appear to be standing on stilts above the water. This tangle of roots allows the trees to handle the daily rise and fall of tides, which means that most mangroves get flooded at least twice per day. The roots also slow the movement of tidal waters, causing sediments to settle out of the water and build up the muddy bottom. Mangrove forests stabilise the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides. The intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter from predators. Ian Ferguson used a 200mm lens at f8 and processed the image in Lightroom.

Outback travelling adventures
Environment Cracking macadamia mysteries
Business feature Brian McCullock has been in the building and construction industry for many years. Based at St George in regional Queensland, Brian also works from time to time as a travelling musician both around St George and further afield. By becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller, Brian is looking to supplement his current income with a mobile business model that can easily be adapted to suit his outback travelling adventures. The beauty of becoming a Transportable Shade Shed small business owner is that the product and the business are fully mobile. People like Brian are finding that opportunities exist to generate additional revenue that easily builds on their existing business or lifestyle. For Brian, he can travel the outback in this vast country and take advantage of the huge potential to sell Transportable Shade Sheds while continuing his other business interests. Travelling for either his established handyman and construction work or for his muso work; by towing his Transportable Shade Shed trailer he is able to advertise his businesses and reach greater potential customers with a product that also complements his existing business service. Brian originally saw a television ad for the Transportable Shade Shed and Saver6.com collaboration and he was keen to find out more. With a desire to seek additional income to top up his current work, Brian was interested to look into a business that would work well with his current lifestyle and commitments. Realising how easy the sheds were to install, the way the mobile business model would fit his lifestyle and combined with the opportunity to tap into a previously unrealised market around the Maranoa district helped Brian make the decision to become a reseller. Another advantage that Brian has experienced is the online support from the cloud based mentoring and marketing platform Saver.6.com. Brian is able to benefit from the social media support and direct marketing savvy that Saver6.com offers. In doing so, the online service can reach a much greater audience and potential sales reach – as well as providing Brian with access to a more current marketing outlook with innovative suggestions and tips for business in our increasingly digital world. Already Brian has had a great response to becoming a reseller with a number of sales and very promising leads under his belt. He is excited about the potential for additional sales opportunities that tie in well with his travel commitments – and appreciates that at any time he can travel around the outback and have “a working holiday.” If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around St George and the Maranoa district please contact Brian via social media or on 0418 794 947. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss or look at a business option that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

Scientists and farmers are racing the clock to crack the secrets of Australia’s finest nut following the early arrival of this year’s macadamia blossoming. The blossoming, the first stage in the macadamia growing cycle, gives researchers a short window to undertake new research into pollination to boost the size and quality of the macadamia harvest. Australia is the world’s largest commercial producer of macadamias, contributing more than 30% of the global crop. During this year’s blossoming, scientists and pollination experts are working with more than 60 leading Australian macadamia farms on research including self and cross-pollination techniques as part of an extensive research and development program for Australia’s biggest home-grown food export. Abnormal weather conditions meant blossoming began earlier than usual this year, signalling a longer growing season with the potential to assist to make a promising harvest for Australia’s macadamia farmers if favourable conditions continue. Less than 1% of flowers become nuts. Each bunch of 40 to 50 flowers produces between four and 15 ‘nutlets’, which eventually ripen into nuts. According to pollination scientist and research lead Brad Howlett (Plant and Food Research NZ), although bees may hold a key, he said there is no “onesize-fits-all” answer, with the effectiveness of pollination methods largely depending on the breed of the tree. "While we are in the early stages of our study, initial findings have all alluded to the fact that both honey and stingless bees do add a certain degree of value to pollination, regardless of the type of macadamia trees," Howlett said. Cross-pollination (using bees and insects) has also delivered success, with one grower reporting an increase in product using cross-pollination techniques, compared to self-pollination.
Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc. Beware the Bullrout!
We care about our environment
by Alan Webb Just when you thought it was safe to go into the water! Let me introduce the Bullrout (Notesthes robusta). It is the sole freshwater scorpion fish in Australia. It is well-named as it is one of the few Australian freshwater fish that possesses poison spines and is responsible for many of the reported stings in Queensland rivers. It belongs to the same family as the tropical marine Lionfish and the Stonefish. Unfortunately, Bullrout tend to live in habitat which is also popular for swimming: slow moving or still water, for example, the base of weirs and dams, or natural pools, as well as among aquatic weeds or in-stream woody debris. They are medium sized, robust bodied fish growing to around 20-30cm in length with characteristically large mouth, large pectoral fins and prominent eyes toward the top of the head. An ambush predator feeding on small fish and invertebrates, it tends to sit motionless on the bottom waiting for prey. It is well-camouflaged against rocky, gravel and mud substrate due to its mottled, mostly brown body colour, often with dark, irregular vertical bands. Their fearsome arrays of venomous spines are associated with the dorsal, anal and pelvis fins. Wearing sturdy footwear if venturing into your local creek or river and gloves if you catch one while fishing will help to avoid the excruciating pain caused by accidentally coming in contact with the spines. Immediate first aid treatment is to place the affected part of the body in hot water to denature the toxin and the use of painkillers. Hospitalisation may be necessary as, in some cases, the patient can become unconscious. “Still just gotta love the bush.”

You Said It Glasshouse Mountains School of Arts Centenary
My wife and I went to the Centenary celebration of the Glasshouse Mountains School of Arts held on Saturday, September 10. We were impressed with the depth and detail of the information on display from the past 100 years. My family shifted to Glass House Mountains in June 1957 so I am fairly familiar with the events and growth of the hall from then to now. The detail of events and festivities at the hall in the early years was very interesting. An example of the detail; we found two letters, one by my Brother Bill and one by my wife Bev (formerly Beckwith), both as Secretary of the Junior Farmers, to the Hall Committee. These letters were from the early 1960’s. I wish to extend my congratulations to John Winterhoff as Chairman for the last 50 years, this is an incredible achievement and deserving of high accolades. The committee who organised the day are to be congratulated on the success of the day. I also want to congratulate Elaine Reeves as Editor for the excellent organising and publication of the Centenary Book. The information and detail of the past 100 years makes for interesting reading. A great job; well done Elaine. The Centenary book can be purchased from the Newsagency in Glass House or phone Elaine on 5496 9134. The community is also indebted to the early founders of the hall for their foresight and courage to commence the Hall project. Allan Smerdon Glass House Mountains
Thanks so much
On behalf of the Hall Committee I would like to thank everyone who supported our Centenary Celebrations on Saturday, September 10. We had a great crowd and everyone I have spoken to has said what a great day it was. There was certainly a lot of talking and reminiscing going on. Even the rain held off! Thanks must go to everyone who helped make the day such a success: the people and businesses who donated items for the multidraw raffle; the Lions crew who manned the barbecue; Sue and Carol and their helpers from

the Sports Club; all the organisations who set up and manned displays throughout the day; Paul O’Mara for bringing Bernie’s photo and railway memorabilia collections; Ron Gillinder for the stage display; the Woodford Singers and the School drum and ukulele bands for entertaining everyone so magnificently; Ferns and Fronds for the loan of plants; the organisations who loaned equipment (Peachester History Committee, Friends of Bankfoot House, Glass House Mountains School); and all those who contributed photos, newspaper articles, stories and historical items. Thankyou also to Sue and Bassett Barks for their donation. And, last but certainly not least, sincere thanks to Lea, Brownie and the staff at Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for your magnificent support over the past few months – we greatly appreciate everything you have done towards making the Hall Centenary such a success. The raffle made just under $700.00, and book sales just under $1,200 – a fantastic effort. Thank you everyone! The committee would also like to acknowledge the Sunshine Coast Council’s Minor Grants Program which provided funding to produce the book on the History of the Hall. Impact on wildlife
Recent research papers published in the USA have drawn attention to the lack of a proper scientific understanding on the effects of WiFi Radio Frequencies (in the microwave bands) on wildlife including birds, bees, butterflies and other insect life. A paper published in July 2016 by Adjunct Professor Albert Manville of John Hopkins University and a former US Fish and Wildlife Service agency leader on bird impacts (including radiation) on telecommunications structures states that there is a considerable amount of work on the thermal effects of ElectroMagnetic Radiation (EMR) and EMF, as is available through ARPANSA the Australia regulatory body, but he concludes: ‘There is virtually no non-thermal research to indicate what is safe for either humans or wildlife, including migratory birds which are highly sensitive to perturbations in ways humans
are not. What little EMF & RF field research on wildlife that has been conducted, its focus has been on behaviour, mortality and reproductive outcomes. In summary, we need to better understand, tease out, and refine how to address these growing and poorly understood radiation impacts on migratory birds, bees, bats, and myriad other wildlife.’ In other words, we are using mobile phone towers, long-distance microwave towers and now NBN towers, all broadcasting in the microwave frequencies with no idea of the impact of these frequencies on the cellular tissue of any populations nearby and no idea of the impact on the navigational systems in birds, bees and other insects that use the earth's magnetic field to navigate. His paper is titled – ‘What We Know, Can Infer, and Don't Yet Know about Impacts from Thermal and Non-thermal Non-ionizing Radiation to Birds and Other Wildlife’. There is an increasing body of published lab research that finds DNA damage at low intensity exposures - well below levels of thermal heating - on field exposures to microwave antennas. Is the continuing roll-out of microwave towers seeing a serious impact on wildlife, their fertility rates and life cycles in our country? We don't know. Richard Giles Conondale
Ambulance Open Day
What a great informative morning at the Beerwah Ambulance Open Day. It was an eye opener to their knowledge, not just medical, but the equipment they have to use and carry. The inner workings of the service we take for granted is beyond words. Thanks to the officers who gave up their day off to explain how it all worked. Lorraine Mann Glass House Mountains
Question to the editor
Last week we were contacted by a reader asking if we had heard anything about the Suncorp Bank in Beerwah closing their office? I can confirm for you that the office will close on Friday, October 14. And the closest other branches will be at Morayfield, Maleny and Caloundra.
What are the biggest challenges facing first home-buyers? Australian first home-buyers are facing a more difficult challenge than ever before, thanks to constantly rising property prices throughout the country. As a result, many such aspiring homeowners are struggling to realise their property dreams, remaining in rentals or the spare room at the parent’s place. While mum’s house is swell, and getting your shirts ironed sure is peachy, it’s important to keep your goals in mind. To that end, let’s have a look at what first homebuyers are struggling with and discover some solutions to these common problems. Saving for your first home can be easy – if you start early. Saving for that deposit A recent First Home Buyers Australia (FHBA) survey revealed that over 40 per cent of respondents found that 18

accumulating a deposit was the most difficult part of obtaining their first home loan. Understandably so, as a 20 per cent deposit on a home at the median house price across Australia’s 5 biggest cities could be as much as $160,000, according to CoreLogic RP Data. Saving for that hefty deposit is all about setting a goal early and sticking to it. This will involve considerable planning, researching of investment options, sacrificing non-essential expenses and perhaps even moving out of your rented home back into mums. Money must be saved wherever possible and you must plan each step towards your goal thoroughly. Astronomical property prices Everyone knows it – real estate is extremely expensive in Australia. A FHBA survey recently found that this fact is (understandably) one of the main reasons
that young buyers struggle to purchase their first property. In the midst of such an imposing market how can you take that first step? A buyer’s agent may make it easier. They are legally required to work in the your best interests, and can use their considerable industry experience and knowledge to find affordable diamonds in the rough, perfect for first home buyers. Almost 40 per cent of respondents thought mortgage brokers provided the most useful service when buying a home. Getting help Buyers agents aren’t the only useful service for first home-buyers. In fact the aforementioned FHBA survey found that almost 40 per cent of respondents thought mortgage brokers provided the most useful service when buying a home.
The right mortgage broker, can make securing your home loan a more straight forward task, offering you access to countless finance products and valuable advice. With suitable loan products at your disposal, gaining a leg up onto the property ladder will no longer be a distant possibility, but a distinct reality.

grocery bill by $5.00. In order to not hold up the line waiting for the checkout, we suggested that rather than run to the car to get my EFTPOS card we deduct an item to cover the shortfall. The customer at the adjoining checkout heard the conversation and reached into her purse and passed the $5.00 over to our operator. We thanked her profusely but she remarked that it "was only the price of a cup of coffee". So once again to the lady, thank you so much, kindness is still alive and well in Australia. At the Woolworths Supermarket in Beerwah on Friday we discovered we were short for our
Conditions
Two weeks ago, we called in for dinner at the Landsborough Hotel as we often do reroute from Brisbane to Maleny. The restaurant was crowded when we left and I left my handbag where I had been sitting. I was preoccupied with grandchildren at the time and early next morning we received a phone call to say my belongings were handed onto staff. Everything was intact, my wallet, cash, phone etc. Considering the crowd that night, I am exceptionally lucky and very grateful to the honesty of the locals. As usual the meal was fantastic and the service and friendliness exceptional. Thank you. Wendy Lonie Maleny

School News Fun with gymnastics
Argh! Me hearties!
Term 3 at Glasshouse Christian College was exciting for Year 5 and 6 Physical Education classes. During a four-week block, students were able to participate in a gymnastics program through an Australian Sporting Schools grant. The funding catered for a specialist gymnastics instructor to teach each of the Year 5 and 6 classes Mattai Elimelech during the student’s normal PE lessons. The GCC students absolutely loved gymnastics and were able to safely perform basic manoeuvres like forward rolls, handstands and cartwheels, progressing to more impressive and scary tricks using the vault, like front flips and back flips.
What began as an exploration into where the Beerwah Kindergarten's fairy garden gems came from soon turned into a full swashbuckling pirate day. Kindy co-director Rebecca Mackintosh said one of the suggestions from the children was

that some pirates had left them behind and their imaginations continued on from there. "The children created the idea of a pirate day, so as a group we started brainstorming what that would look like,” said Ms Mackintosh aka Captain Smellypants. “Putting their plans into action, we had pirates making treasure maps, creating pirate hats and racing around the playground discovering ‘never ending' treasure to fill the treasure chest.” Every kindy friend came dressed up or made themselves costumes when they arrived, adding to the fun of the day. Imagination window to the world Contributed by Deb Ives Arts Week for Beerwah State School took place last week, with students from Prep to Year 6 enjoying all kinds of activities where they used their imagination to create wonderful art pieces. The theme for this year’s Arts Week was ‘Windows to Our World’. The student’s pieces of art were on display in a gallery setting throughout the evening of Thursday, September 10. Doors opened at 4.00pm, with performances from both the junior and senior choir, and band performances to entertain throughout the night. Artwork from Year 1 classes will be on public display at the Beerwah Library foyer from now until the end of the month.

‘High Five’ a hit with students
Students at Mooloolah State School have taken to the new ‘High Five Method’, confidently using the strategy within the school and playground. This term the school introduced a new strategy to develop problem solving strategies for our students. Students from all year levels have taken it on board and adopted their own take on it. ‘High Five’ represents five actions • Ignore • Talk friendly • Walk away • Talk firmly • Report Year 3 this week together with their teacher Mrs Wendy Gaines have made a lanyard with their own hand and decorated it to wear around their necks to let others know they are using this strategy to stop and alter unwanted behaviours. Teachers and students have had many discussions around this strategy and all students are on board with the process that allows them to feel in control of situations they
don’t like. This method allows the students to feel empowered and use their own problem solving skills, whilst gaining confidence in themselves. It teaches them respect for others as well as themselves. It gives them the power to look after themselves and let others know that their behaviour is not acceptable. Well done to all students at Mooloolah State School and keep using your ‘High Five’.

Spring clean your body
by Billie from BL Natural Health Spring is here and it’s a perfect time to get your body ready for Summer! 1. Clean up your diet Our sleeping hormone melatonin is higher in winter and is believed to increase our appetite. Now that the weather is warming up, we can replace some heavy meals such as pizza and pasta with healthy salads and other lighter meals. Check out one of my favourite recipes - quinoa salad - below. You could make a bowl on a Sunday and take it to lunch during the week. 2. Detox your body Spring is the perfect time to support your body to get rid of all the toxins that have accumulated over winter. For two to three weeks eliminate extra burdens such as processed foods, coffee, sugar and alcohol. You will feel the difference! 3. Get moving Even though we are blessed with a beautiful Winter on the Sunshine Coast, people tend to move less in Winter, as daylight is shorter. Start enjoying the longer days and increase your activity. Why not go for a walk in the morning before you start your day? 4. Drink plenty of water Ensure to drink a minimum of two litres of water per day. Water can help us to flush out toxins,

Good Health Now open in Mapleton ... a place where the only person that matters is you by Leanne Fulton I’m very excited to share with you our brand new studio in the heart of Mapleton … Hinterland Holistic Health. As a local resident I wanted to be involved with and support our local area – what better way to do it than become part of the small business community. My vision was not only to offer new services to the area, but also a space for other practitioners to share their skills. I wanted to create a beautiful healing space, where people could instantly feel the energy, relax, re-energise and rebalance. After seven weeks of long hours renovating with my husband, Rob, we took a vacant financial planning office and completely transformed it into a warm, calm and restful retreat. We are also thrilled to also offer the ONLY Halo Salt room in the Hinterland as well as a wide range of services across our four practitioners.

Why you should exercise! Exercise is an essential ingredient in the recipe of life! It is one of the most important parts of keeping your body at a healthy weight and also maintaining good mental health. As a general goal, aim to participate in 30 minutes of physical activity daily, however, you may need more than this depending on your specific goals. Regular exercise helps promote better sleep, it can help you fall asleep faster and improve the quality of your sleep, which is integral in maintaining a healthy body. If you need a lift in your mood, exercise can help with that too, as it stimulates certain chemicals in the brain that leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. It can help combat certain health conditions including; stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, certain types of cancers, heart disease, high blood pressure and osteoporosis. Here at Plus Fitness Beerwah our qualified Personal trainers can design a gym program specific to your health and fitness goals. To help get you started come in and see one of our friendly staff members.

Out & About Witta shines for ‘Wittafest’ Wittafest kicked off with a good size crowd at 10.00am and it didn’t seem like too long until the visitors discovered the awesome bratwurst sausages and the German beers on offer! The entertainment program started early with a diverse mix of live music, the sun was shining and the ‘hay bale’ seating was pretty popular. Kids contented themselves with games from days gone by, there wasn’t an iPad in sight and there were some very serious games of pick up sticks being played.
The Ambulance Service had a great display and were happy to give CPR demonstrations – Warren from Kenilworth First Response, David Lane from Caloundra, along with President of the Maleny Local Ambulance Committee Jim Carseldine, Adam Russell OIC of Maleny and Hans Schinkel from Kenilworth First Response

A New Zealand adventure comedy based on a Barry Crump book will be given two screenings in the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, September 24: a matinee at 3.00pm (doors open at 2.30pm) and evening showing at 7.15pm (doors open for dinner at 6.00pm). Sam Neill stars as crusty genuine foster father ‘Uncle Hec’, hunting down and protecting offbeat 13-year-old runaway Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison) after the loss of Auntie Bella, Ricky’s foster mother. The script and direction by Taika Wakiti (who also plays a character called The Minister) relies on the wildly rollicking fun with feeling of Crump’s popular novel ‘Wild Pork and Watercress’. This 2016 Kiwi release, which has sparked immediate and rapidly exploding international success, walked away with several awards at the US Sundance Festival and then the Edinburgh International Festival. Members of the Maleny Film Society may pre-book on-line for themselves; or for themselves and two guests per member at the Maleny Information Centre. Members and students $8.00, children $4.00, and non-members $13.00. Catering by Wild Rocket@ Mistys, with tea and coffee stand and bar. www.malenyfilmsociety.info

New York triumph for Maleny
Maleny Arts Council’s next show is straight from New York, Frank Ferrante in Groucho, a ‘digitally sharp’ performance of the best of Groucho Marx, according to the New York Times. Frank will perform this tour de force on Sunday, October 2 at 2.00pm in the Maleny Community Centre. Maleny Arts Council President, Jennifer Radbourne said the audience can also meet Frank Ferrante after the show, as they invite their patrons on to the deck of the community centre to buy a drink and chat with this outstanding comedian. Frank originated the off-Broadway title role after he was discovered by Groucho’s son Arthur, and for that performance won the 1987 New York’s Theatre World Award. In the Garden with Brownie
Wisteria hysteria If you’re lucky enough to have a Wisteria vine (like the one pictured belonging to Jim and Kim Straker from Reesville), you’ll now be enjoying the reason why you put up with them for the rest of the year ... their spectacular flowering display. If you’d like to grow a Wisteria, here are some basic pointers. Wisterias are vigorous, quick-growing vines and Herculean-level training is sometimes required to contain their over-exuberant growth and train them into a good shape. There are four types to choose from – Chinese, Japanese, Silky Wisteria and native Australian Wisteria (which is a similar but different beast from the exotic varieties). The best exotic to grow this far north is Chinese Wisteria, as the others need a cooler winter to stimulate better flower development. Chinese Wisteria comes in several forms including white, pink and purple. It has dense attractive foliage in Spring, Summer and Autumn and is deciduous in Winter – which is handy if you’re growing it over a pergola. To plant them, they prefer full sun and will need a good fertile well drained soil. To start with, they will need training to encourage the long leaders to grow where you want them to. Apply fertiliser in Spring and mid-Summer. Caution: overfeeding will produce leaves instead of flowers. After planting, tie the new season's long shoots to the required positions
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network
Plant of the Month
Forest Hop Bush
Dodonaea triquetra Forest Hop Bush is one of our most common local shrubs and can be found on sandy soils in SE Queensland. This plant is sparsely branched and grows two to three metres in the understorey of dry Eucalypt forests or in moister soils. Flowers are produced in winter / spring, are minute and yellow green in colour. Separate male and female flowers are produced on different plants. While Forest Hop Bush is probably not a plant you would grow for flowers, it is well worth a space in the garden for the spectacular seed capsules. These three winged, papery seed capsules may be lime green or deep purple and remain on the plant for some time. There are three Hop bush species growing in the Glass House Mountains including one restricted to the mountain tops and classified as vulnerable. Look for this attractive species along the Glass House Mountains walking tracks.

and remove unwanted shoots as they appear. Removing the tips of the long shoots once they have reached the required length will encourage the development of side shoots. Trim them to size as well. Once the plant has reached the preferred size and shape, all new shoots should be cut back to two or three leaves. This encourages the development of the short spurs on which many of the flower buds appear. Caution: pruning later than January will remove flowering shoots.

ROSS’S RENTAL TIP HOW MUCH DOES A TAP WASHER COST? JUST A THOUGHT!
MALENY LAND WITH VIEWS! Mount Vue is a boutique estate nestled in the hinterland, comprising of semi acreage allotments ranging from 3000m2 with panoramic rural views. This is the chance to secure your own piece of this stunning Hinterland oasis. The lowest priced acreage blocks in Maleny are almost all SOLD! Contact Exclusive Agent: Jess Luthje 0438 616 064 www.malenyrealty.com.au/12590553
The cost of a tap washer is very little. At the large retail outlets you can purchase a pack of 12 washers for under $5. The cost of the repair is actually the labour or call out fee to replace them. If a tenant submits a maintenance request for a leaking tap washer, it may be a consideration to replace all the tap washers at the one time. We Ross Rutledge have encountered situations where one tap washer 5499 9525 or has been replaced and several weeks later another tap starts leaking. In the average home there are 0447 787 020 approximately 10 – 12 taps. The plumber is already at the property, so think about being proactive to avoid another expensive call out fee in comparison to the cost of a tap washer. All maintenance & repairs are a tax deduction.

Reach out your hand
He looked and smelt terrible. His hair was long and scraggly, his clothes were ragged and torn. His skin bore evidence of his advanced state of leprosy - his hand was curled into a crook. He had oozing lesions. He was not allowed to live inside in the town boundaries but was forced to camp outside the town with other rejected souls. He could not come within two metres of anyone and everywhere he went he had to cover his mouth and shout “unclean, unclean”. It had been years since anyone had touched him. In the eyes of society, he was unloved and unlovely. But he took a risk and approached Jesus and bowed down and asked for healing. And Jesus did the unthinkable - he reached out GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

and touched him. Jesus could have healed him from a distance. He had done that before but he healed the leper by reaching out and touching him. In that moment he gave him healing but he also gave him back his dignity and showed that despite what others thought, that God loved him. Our society also has those who appear to be unloved and unlovely. Maybe they are suffering from a physical disease or mental illness. But I think the truth is that there are times when we have acted like we are unloved and unlovely. We have all had those times in our lives when we are not pleasant to be around because the pain of what is going on inside of us expresses itself in such a way that it drives other people away. As Christians we are called to look past the ‘ugliness’ of what we see and show compassion. We are called to reach out our hand and touch those who are suffering. We are called to be the GCNEWS Add sept 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM hands of Jesus. Is there somebody that you could reach out and touch today? MOOLOOLAH: Sun 10 am Public Hall, Bray Rd

The Range Croquet Club
Moonbeams
Contributed by Gail Denver Last Thursday we held our annual Eileen Harrison Friendship Day, and what a great time was enjoyed by all. Twenty-six visitors from within the Sunshine Coast region and the Windsor Club in Brisbane joined us. We played association, ricochet and golf croquet, and a few ventured on to have a game of Hurry Scurry. All games were shortened with a change of partner after each round. Though the weather threatened to dampen our spirits, we managed to finish and see our croquet friends on their homeward journey before the first sprinkles arrived. Peter Stevenson from Windsor, and a regular visitor, was the lucky raffle winner. On Friday, nine visitors from Caloundra Retirement Village came on their monthly visit for a morning of golf croquet. Once more everyone had a great time. Coaching on Saturday morning was well attended with some new skills being mastered. Many thanks to the club members who assisted with our busy schedule. Regular association croquet coaching is held at our grounds on the Maleny Showgrounds on Saturday mornings; and the Range Croquet Club welcomes new players at any time, with coaching and mallets available for beginners. Contact Vince Carbery (5494 2193) or Priscilla Vickers (5494 3555).

Just for Laughs Circus children
A husband and wife who worked for the circus went to an adoption agency. The social workers raised their doubts about the couple’s suitability to adopt a child. They produced photos of their 50-foot decked out motor home, which was clean, well maintained and equipped with a beautiful bedroom for the child. The social workers then raised concerns about the education a child would receive while in the couple's care on a touring circus. "We've arranged for a full-time tutor who will teach the child all the usual subjects along with
French, Mandarin and computer skills," they said. The social workers then expressed concern about a child being raised in a circus environment. "Our nanny is a certified expert in pediatric care, welfare, and diet. In addition, there are 17 other children who travel with their circus parents." The social workers were then finally satisfied to approve an adoption. They asked, "what age child are you hoping to adopt?" The husband replied: "It doesn't really matter, as long as the kid fits into the cannon." Submitted by Hugh, Beerwah

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The planet Venus, now commences a three week stay in Scorpio. Your popularity therefore increases however it does entail a measure of selectivity about with whom you spend your time. Jupiter gives you much gain through cooperation and agreements to get what you want. Mercury direct makes opportunity knocking at your door. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The weekend commences a period of time when you can expect needed pieces of information to be revealed. Venus entering Scorpio brings good work alliances back to the forefront. The weekend also has another water energy, namely the Cancer Moon, to provide you with emotional psychic vibes. These make for bright success and big news. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The Sun enters Libra as well as fortunate Jupiter, both launching a new income and investment and income cycle for you. A review of your retirement is in order. The week gives off sentiments of ‘letting the good times roll’. Optimism runs high, however do not extend yourself or take unnecessary risks. Keep careful attention to diet and exercise. ARIES March 21 – April 20 You are reading your stars over this weekend when the spring equinox takes place. So on Friday the Moon will be in Gemini and then the weekend sees you with the Moon in Cancer. Also, the Sun moves into Libra and opens a month of high vitality in relationships. Mercury going direct sees you clearing up work and health areas.

Week beginning 21/09/2016 VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Lots of good luck and fortune could be operating. This week there is the joy of Jupiter moving into Libra, giving a new cycle of partnerships and relationships and indications of congenial arrangements together. Mercury moving direct sees what was missing over the last three weeks to be revealed and informs you to take insightful decisions. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Jupiter enters your sign and will run along for the next 12 months. It takes 12 years to get to your sign. This then is a great week for your personal expansion, happiness and good luck charm. Art galleries may be visited and new pictures or paintings may adorn your walls with old ones ready to be replaced. Happy social dividends now! SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Just as the equinox occurs on Friday, Mercury moves direct and Jupiter enters the sign of Libra. Information delayed over the last three weeks now falls back into place. Jupiter brings a cooperative mood resolving conflicts and building alliances. Time to renovate, decorate or beautify the home. Celebrate being with other social people. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Many missing pieces fall into place over this weekend with Mercury moving direct and Venus coming into Scorpio. This means you may need some time for research and being alone to do it. As the Sun and Jupiter move through Libra and with the Moon hitting Leo on Monday, you should see blissful love and laughter in all the right places.
