Hi Everyone Last week I went along to the Beerwah Peachester RSL Subbranch’s ceremony to recognise Victory in the Pacific Day. The ceremony brought together a number of moving elements including a beautiful hymn sung by Jenny Broderick, and a thoughtful poem by local school girl Brittany Campagnolo. Wreaths were laid to the background tone of bagpipes, the Last Post was played, and a prayer was read. However what really moved me on the day was the six special guests that sat pride of place at the front of the ceremony. The special guests were Nev Anning, Bill Shaw, Alan Wilcox, Gordon and Sylvia Middlecoat and Dave Edwards, members who served in the Second World War and who were able to make it along on the day.

The sub-branches most senior member, Mr Nev Anning aged 95 (and not far off 96) had been in hospital until the night before and had insisted on being released to ensure he could attend the ceremony. The combined ages of the six members was 541 years – and it made me think about all those that did not return and all their lost years with their family and friends. Each year this must become more important for those that were there to make sure they come along to ceremonies like this to honour and acknowledge the contribution of their mates! Photos on page 6 Regards,

When 23-year-old Luke Christensen wrote off his vehicle in an accident in 2008, doctors advised his family to turn off his life support due to the extent of his injuries. Thankfully, they didn’t follow the doctor’s advice, and today, Luke is making amazing progress on his path to recovery, thanks to his team of specialists, and the team at Fitness Matters. Despite losing an arm and suffering brain damage, after two years of intensive rehabilitation and training, Luke, who spent two years in hospital after the accident, is now learning to live an independent life. His goal is to one day walk again, and he’s well on the way to achieving that goal thanks to the support he’s received from the team at Fitness Matters. Since joining the gym two years ago, Luke has gone from strength to strength. From being totally dependent on carers to get out of bed and to shower, Luke, who is still wheelchair bound, is slowly regaining the strength, confidence and self-esteem he is so determined to achieve. His progress is in no small part thanks to his trainers at Fitness Matters, including Kevin Schultz, who has been working with Luke since November last year. Kevin, who has been concentrating on Luke’s coordination, said when he first started working with him, he couldn’t catch a ball, but within a month, he was able to catch about 50 in succession. Luke is an inspiration,” Kevin said. “He’s gone from strength to strength, gives 100 per cent, and just doesn’t give up.” So impressed is Kevin and the rest of the team by Luke’s courage and determination, they have embarked on a fundraising mission for a platinum membership for Luke, who’s current membership is just about to expire. To reach their fundraising goal, team member Michelle Sawyer has been in serious training of her own, as she prepares to compete in the first ever Sunshine Coast 42.2km marathon next weekend. Michelle, who has only ever competed in one other marathon of that distance, said while she was getting nervous about the task ahead of her, it was nothing compared to what Luke had been through.

Luke trains at Fitness Matters three times a week with personal trainer Kevin “When I feel like I can’t run another metre, I will think of Luke, because what I will be going through is nothing compared to what Luke has been through,” she said. “Along with the rest of the team here at Fitness Matters, we’ve watched Luke grow, and been part of his amazing recovery. “To get behind him in this way, to fundraise to help support his ongoing rehabilitation at the gym, is the very least we could do. Fitness Matters donated $2860 of Luke’s platinum membership, and the team hopes to raise the remainder through donations to Michelle’s marathon effort. To help them reach their goal, you can sponsor Michelle by pledging your donation at Fitness Matters, in Simpson Street, or you can make tax deductable donations to The Developing Foundation, Westpac BSB 034 072, Account no 157889, reference Christensen or 28. Alternatively, cheques can be sent to The Developing Foundation, 14 Munro Street, Auchenflower QLD, 4066. Reference Christensen or 28. People can contact The Developing Foundation on 3871 0530 to claim their tax receipt. “We’ve got no doubt Luke will walk again one day.” “He is an inspiration to everyone, and he has a fantastic attitude to life, which is what has got him to where he is today,” Michelle said.

An update on Max, our local horse whisperer Earlier this year, GCNews ran a story on Max Chapman, who donates his time and resources to care for horses. A Facebook page has now been set up for Max’s rescue horses so if anyone would like to help out with a donation or follow Max’s journey they can.

Please help us help this wonderful man. Max Chapman is trying as hard as he can to have these horses live their life in peace. We want to raise enough money to build a shelter so these horses have somewhere to retreat from the harsh weather. We really need to raise this money so if you wish to donate there is an account set up so you can put money straight into the account. Need a feed needs YOU She’s suffered more tragedy and heartache than anyone should be forced to endure, and now this local good Samaritan is about to embark on yet another charity mission to help out others less fortunate. Adrienne Heppel, who runs a hospice, respite centre and emergency accommodation at New Zealand House, in Glass House Mountains, was so shocked to hear how local university students were being forced to choose between food and accommodation; she felt she had to do something about it. “There are more homeless people living on the Sunshine Coast than we care to think about, and one of the worst situations I’ve heard about of late is students having to make a choice between buying food, or paying for their accommodation,” said Adrienne. So followed a phone call to the Brisbane Anglican Maori Mission, with whom she runs New Zealand House, and ‘Need a Feed’ was established. On September 2, Adrienne, with the support of volunteers from the Brisbane Anglican Maori Mission, hope to be able to feed up to 200 university students and others who struggle to put food on the table on a regular basis. Students are being encouraged to car pool or catch a train out to the premises on Steve Irwin Way, where they will each receive a meal, and a snack pack to take away at the event, the first, she hopes, of many. In the meantime, though, she is still working out exactly how that is going to happen. Despite years of providing charity to less fortunate, for the first time ever, Adrienne is being forced to put out the call to the local community to support her in her latest endeavour.

Never one to turn away someone in need, Adrienne says she is both amazed and frightened by the number of people looking for refuge or help. “People losing their homes is becoming a natural course of events, and the rise in the suicide rate is simply alarming, however in saying that, I still firmly believe that here in Australia, we are the lucky country. “There are others much worse off,” Adrienne said. The former New Zealander said her generosity and giving nature was part of her very strong Maori culture and heritage. “My family and I aren’t rich, but we are comfortable, and we want to share what we have with others, but my worst nightmare would be having to turn people away,” she said. Adrienne said while she and her husband would be funding the first ‘Need a Feed’ event, she hoped it could be held as frequently as weekly. “Here we have an ideal location to cook and serve food, and a band of willing Adrienne with two of her family members, Popcorn and Rex volunteers, just not the means,” she said. “Even if just a few people could help out in a Adrienne said she found it disturbing that small way, it would go a very long way. people with the means to lend a hand often took a very negative view of those less fortunate. “I am a firm believer in fate, and consider myself a very lucky person, and some way, somehow, it “People seem to think that there are those that will happen.” will use and abuse the system, and use that as an excuse for not getting involved. To support Adrienne’s Need a Feed program, contact Ron and Joy Ratcliffe of the Beerburrum “But if everyone thought like that, nothing would Post Office on 5496 0606. ever happen.

Kids triathlon training starting soon

Peter Thorpe who some locals would know from learn to swim sessions at the Beerwah pool is also a level one triathlon coach and from September 4 he will be running triathlon training for kids two afternoons a week. Peter believes that the most important part of any sport but particularly kids sport is that it has to be fun! “The child does not have to be able to swim fast, or even a long distance, the same for running and riding," he said. “In fact, in some sessions we may not even swim one lap and we may start off with a run/walk and they can use whatever bike they have at home. “It is all about getting children involved in an environment where they feel comfortable and confident. There will be games in and outside the pool and on the ovals. Every session will include a small component of education, nutrition, sleep, how the body functions etc." Classes will run at the Beerwah Pool onTuesday and Friday 3.30pm 4.30pm cost is $7.00 which includes entry into the pools. Bookings are essential so to make a booking or find out more contact Peter directly on 0423 702 677 or email - peterthorpe1997@hotmail.com www.gcnews.com.au

Vale – Brian Appleby Contributed by Helen Jakeman from the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade

On Friday, August 10, our Chairman, Brian Appleby (‘Apples’ as we knew him) lost his short battle with cancer stemming from a melanoma. Brian has been involved with the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade since its reformation in 1991. From 1991 – 1993 he was Second Officer of our brigade and then in 1994 he took on the role as Chairman. Brian was very committed to the brigade and he volunteered many hours over the last 21 years, not only as an active fire fighter, but also in his role of Chairman. He led our brigade through many changes with the building of our fire shed and then last year our extension of the ‘Stan Tutt’ training room, new fire fighting vehicles and equipment and most importantly chaired all of our meetings in a most professional and dedicated manner. Prior to the last few months he had never missed a meeting since becoming Chairman of the Brigade. He also took on another volunteer role as the Administration Officer (Secretary/Treasurer) of the Caloundra City Rural Fire Group (which involves all of the local fire brigades in our area) and he held this role since its inception in 1996. Earlier this year Brian was recognised for his volunteer work by receiving an award from Andrew Powell M.P. Brian fought a courageous battle since his diagnosis in January and it was with all the love and support from his family and friends that helped him to stay so positive until the end. We celebrated Brian’s life at our Fire Station on Tuesday, August 14 with approximately 180 people attending the service which was a true indication of how much he was loved and respected by everyone that knew him. Rest in Peace ‘Apples’, we are certainly going to miss you.

Hot cars raise funds for U.G.L.Y cause

From the Schools Glass House Mountains School Country Festival The Glass House Mountains State School students are looking forward to their Country Festival to be held on Sunday, September 16, 10.00am - 3.00pm. We are inviting the local community to support our school by enjoying the day with us. Along with the normal fairground rides and attractions, you can check out the market stalls, sample yummy homemade delights in our cafe and take one home from our cake stall for later. Feel free to sing along with the local group ‘Super Dads’ as they entertain us on the day. All of the classes are running their own stalls on the day so we will have the ever popular chocolate toss, bird in a cage and make your own pet rock. Bunnings Caloundra are supporting our plant stall so for those who like to garden please come along and check what we have to offer. If you didn’t get to the Ekka, why not grab your show bag or indulge in a Dagwood Dog here! This is our major fundraising event for the year and we would love to see lots of past and present students, teachers and parents joining in the fun.

Beerwah march into district sports The Beerwah Guards (Marching Band) accompanied Beerwah State School in the Interschool Athletics Carnival march past on August 10. The Beerwah Guards have been in training for the last three years under the expert guidance of Suzanne McBurney.

The Caboolture Regional Car Club recently got behind our local U.G.L.Y bartender Mandi Steensen, when they brought along 32 spectacular cars for lunch at the Beerwah Hotel. Mandi was really overwhelmed by their support raising $450.00 from generously donated raffle prizes.

Glasshouse Country View Club

Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer Narrow boating the English Canals - On Wednesday, August 15 we were entertained by Stuart and Angela West who gave us a talk and slideshow entitled ‘Boating on the English Canals’. Stuart and Angela retired to our area four years ago and prior to that they owned a narrow boat, ‘The Emily Rose’ on which they spent six months of each year travelling the English waterways. The next View Club function will be held in the Glasshouse Sports Club on September 5 at 10.00am when we will have a fashion morning hosted by Eclectic Dreams of Landsborough. Everyone is welcome; a door fee of $12.00 will include morning tea and a lucky door prize. For catering purposes pleas phone Joy on 5439 9049 or Lynette on 5496 9074. Anyone interested in joining the View Club please phone Joy or Lydia 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply any further information about the club. Anyone can check out the View Club on their website http:// view.org.au View clubs are a valued part of the Smith Family which is a national, independent children’s charity committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education and support.

Toastmaster's visit to Camp LU11 Contributed by Martine Goedhart

One of our members Robert Thompson presented two educationals at Camp LU11. Here’s a report on how Robert experienced his involvement with the group. During the school holidays in July young people from all over Queensland gathered at Camp LU11 at Landsborough. They shared study and activities necessary for them to complete their journey towards their ultimate goal of becoming a Queens Scout. Among the many challenges they faced during the week were high ropes courses and abseiling from dizzying heights, but whilst many took these challenges head-on, what struck real fear into the hearts of many, was the thought of public speaking. Fortunately a representative from the Glasshouse Toastmasters Club, Robert Thompson was on hand to give insights about ‘Effective Communication’. "I am overwhelmed by the passion and potential of these young people on their way to becoming Queen Scouts," Robert said. By attending Toastmasters, people of all ages can overcome their fear of public speaking and enjoy personal and professional development in a fun and supportive environment. The Glasshouse Club meets every second and fourth Thursday of the month in the Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah, 9.00am for a 9.15am start, finish 11.30am. If you’d like to know more about us, or like to hear Robert presenting one of his speeches, join us for a meeting. Robert was the runner up, competing to represent Australia on the world stage on August 18, in Orlando, Florida. Give us a call on 5496 9855 or 5494 0161. We love to hear from you.

To coincide with the Olympics the Mooloolah Valley Slimmers are running their ‘Slimpics 2012’. This is a fun event that has been run at the same time as the past two Olympic games. Our opening ceremony was held last week with members dressing in their team colors, along with team war cries and table decorations. There are the Fantastic Five in green, Jillaroos in yellow, True Blue Ozlympians in blue and the Synchronised Slimmers in red. Slimpics will run for six weeks, with teams partaking in a different events during each week. Focusing on weight loss, teams score points for individual weight loss as well as bonus points for every team member losing weight and participating in the weekly event. Events focus on two key factors for losing weight - exercising and using a food diary to help keep within the recommended calorie intake per day. Our closing ceremony will be held on September 6 which we are sure will be a great day filled with laughter and celebrations of members losing weight. The Mooloolah Valley Slimmers are a group who meet at 9.00am every Thursday morning at the Mooloolah Public Hall, Bray Road, Mooloolah. We encourage members to attain their goal weight by providing incentives as well as running various competitions to add variety to the meetings and encourage member participation. Each meeting we discuss a range of ideas from healthy eating to incorporating more exercise in our daily routine as well as new items on the market that may help (or hinder) weight control. The first meeting of the month we give our awards and host a morning tea provided by members. For more information about the Mooloolah Valley Slimmers club please contact Bev on 5494 7793.

Early Christmas fundraising for the wider community Submitted by Rick Joyce

Over the last number of years the Landsborough Masonic Lodge’s major fundraising has been by selling raffle tickets just prior to Christmas. The proceeds of this, in addition to other money raised from monthly meetings, has been used to help the wider community. Your support has been greatly appreciated and the proceeds have been put to good use over the last few years, for example: outdoor settings for Lavally House as well as assistance with the supply of an air-conditioning unit and concrete for the driveway; a security fence for the Glass House Dementia Unit; purchase of a computer for the assistance of a hearing impaired child; assistance to BADYAC re table and computer; purchase of software for the training mannequin, used by the paramedics at the Beerwah Ambulance Station to keep abreast with new innovations, and many other such projects. The Beerwah Recycling Centre has very kindly agreed to our using their facilities for the next few months for a monthly Sausage Sizzle, and if successful, will become a monthly event at the centre in 2013. The first monthly Sausage Sizzle, which will top-up our coffers from the monthly meetings, will be on Saturday, August 25 from 8.30am onwards at the Beerwah Recycling Centre. We look forward to your patronage.

Keep in Touch

Many of you would have received the Glass House Community Newsletter in your mail boxes recently and I hope you had the chance to have a read and see what I have been up to since the election. I also used the newsletter to advertise my mobile office that was happening in Glasshouse Mountains on Saturday, August 11 and I must say a huge thanks to those locals that came along to say hi and pass on their feedback. Another way you can stay in touch with what is happening in and around Glass House is through my eNewsletter which is emailed at the start of each month. Subscribe by visiting my website www.andrewpowell.com.au. Thanks also to those people who completed and returned the 30 Second Local Action Survey enclosed at the back of the newsletter. I read every single one of these surveys and appreciate the feedback on issues affecting our community. Any action items raised in these surveys are recorded and prioritised for future attention or are passed on to the relevant Council member or Department. If you missed out on one, call the office and we will send you a copy - 5435 2013.

Justice of the Peace Award

When I meet people like Norm Birch of Peachester I am reminded how truly special our community volunteers are. I recently had the pleasure of presenting Norm (and four other worthy recipients) with an award recognising his 25 years of service as a JP. We held a little morning tea in the office to celebrate this momentous event and it was really special for me Presenting Norm Birch with his award to have the chance to personally thank Norm and the other recipients for their dedication to our community.

Out and About

We really have a thriving business community in the Glasshouse region and I applaud everyone involved with the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce for your pro-active approach to improving and building your business. I had the opportunity to meet and chat with many people involved with our business community at the AGM last Wednesday night and even got to chair the meeting which was a great honour. Don't forget coming up this Saturday is the annual Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival at the Beerwah Sports Ground - sure to be a fun-filled day for the whole family, so make sure you come along and support the Cancer Council.

Bankfoot wall prints Prints of English scenes have adorned the lounge room walls in Bankfoot House for more than 120 years. Old black and white photographs, believed to have been taken inside the house in the 1890s and held in the Bankfoot House collection, clearly show a range of family portraits and the prints on the walls. The framed English country scene prints were starting to show their age with some moisture and insect damage. Such damage was to be expected given their long term storage within the heritage-listed timber house under a corrugated iron roof. The Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Collections Curator recently arranged for these prints to be preserved and restored. The results have been spectacular. The cleaned and repaired prints are back on the walls and hopefully better prepared for the next 100 years.

Bullock Yoke

A timber bullock yoke along with a pair of bullock neck irons are significant examples of the hardware used during early timber-getting days. The yoke and irons have been given preservation treatment by volunteers and generate particular interest for visitors to the house. Recently, Bill Ferris pointed out the location of a second set of neck irons in the Bankfoot House grounds. These were not well preserved but were permanently wedged in the fork of an old Persimmon tree. Bill said his grandmother (Clementina Burgess) always referred to the tree as the Date Plum tree. A temporary decision to place the neck irons in the tree has entombed them forever. New volunteers are welcome to join in the activities at Bankfoot House or if interested in becoming a member of the Friends group, phone 5493 0197 (Wednesdays) or contact President, Ron Gillinder, on 0407 760 989. Email address friends@bankfoothouse.org. www.gcnews.com.au

Landsborough Court House

I am very pleased to see that Landsborough Court House will not be closed and will continue to serve the community. Talk of its possible closure struck a chord with the people of Landsborough and they brought to my attention the necessity of the court house and importance it holds in our community. I congratulate them on the efforts they made and it’s good to see the court house will not be closed.

Community spirit alive and well

What a fantastic range of events we’ve been treated to of late, and there’s more to come. The Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival will be on this Saturday, August 25, at the Beerwah Sports Ground. It’s a great event that raises money for the Cancer Council of Queensland and features horse events, athletics, vintage vehicles, an animal nursery, market stalls and much more. For more information phone Bruce, 5494 9557 or Ross, 5494 6654. I hope to see many of you there.

44 Caloundra Street, Landsborough

It’s great to see work is well underway to address the kerb and channelling issues at this complex. Earlier this year a very determined group of residents raised their concerns about safety and access and I’m pleased to see council has acted. Well done to all involved.

Stay safe this fire season

Many of you would have noticed controlled burns taking place last week in the area, which affected parts of Steve Irwin Way. These are undertaken by the fire service to reduce the impact of bushfires. With an extremely hot summer predicted it’s timely for people to remember to clear their gutters of excess leaves, never throw cigarette butts out the car window – hefty penalties apply, and always check with your local fire service if you’re planning even the smallest of burn-offs/fires in your back yard as there may be a fire ban in place due to conditions. Visit www.fire.qld.gov.au for more information. AUGUST 22 2012 |

Kinesiology is a proven effective method that is grounded in anatomy and physiology and has its origins in traditional as well as contemporary medicine. It is completely natural and non invasive. Simple in its application, yet profound in its results. It offers a truly unique approach to our health and wellbeing needs. An unparalleled feature of Kinesiology is that it allows direct access to our body’s innate wisdom, whereby the cause of imbalance can be detected and our unique and priority healing needs can be established. The body has the wisdom to heal itself, and Kinesiology can access that information in order to assist the natural healing process. The answers truly lie within. It helps to restore balance to the individual by diffusing the causes of many health related problems, however you do not necessarily need to have ‘problems’ to benefit. Kinesiology is also renowned for facilitating the accomplishment of specific goals and with assisting the individual to access untapped potential. By accessing the all wise, innate intelligence from within, we can tap into information relating to all aspects of the multidimensional human being, that is, all energy systems that constitute the physical, mental, emotional, bio-chemical, structural, electrical, spiritual and more. Here are some examples of how it can help you – pain; stress; digestive disorders; learning difficulties; allergic responses; sports injuries; general wellbeing, and much more. I offer consultations at Glass House Mountains and Beerwah and can be contacted on 0467 489 604. Pure Balance Kinesiology ‘Bringing Your Body Back Into Balance’.

Living Well Stargazer September 2012 with Chirone Witsen

Spring Equinox and the second Uranus-Pluto contact The New Moon falls in Virgo on Sunday, September 16 at 12.10pm, followed closely by the second Uranus-Pluto square, discussed below. It’s likely to be a time of huge changes, so stay conscious! The second Uranus-Pluto square will be felt for the whole of September even though it won’t be exact until Wednesday, September 19. This is a revolutionary energy bringing changes at many different levels - there are five more hits to go over the next four years, so we are still only at the beginning of this collective journey of transformation. The key is to stay as conscious as possible. The Equinox falls just after midnight on Sunday, September 23. The Equinox is always about balance – it’s the time of year when day and night are of equal length and the seasons come to a point of balance.

Volunteers make a difference The Equinox is marked by the Sun moving into the zodiac sign of Libra, the sign associated with harmony, balance and fairness. The Spring Equinox is one of the major festivals in the Celtic calendar, a time of rejoicing that winter is over and celebrating the birth of new life. This is a perfect time to explore what might be out of balance in your own life and find a way to restore that balance, whether it’s in your relationships, your family life, your work or any other aspect of your life. The Full Moon in Aries on Sunday, September 30 awakens your ability to be assertive in your life, standing in your power as a warrior of one kind or another. This Full Moon aligns completely with the current Uranus-Pluto energy, inviting us to awaken to a more empowered way of being. It is likely to bring to fruition any project where you have been pioneering, creating something very new – yet be aware of any tendency to give your power away to others. copyright © 2012 Chirone Witsen All rights reserved For details of consultations, astrology courses and an extended version of this New Moon update, visit the Stargazer Astrology website www.chironewitsen.com, email info@ chironewitsen.com or ring Chirone on 0421 814 459.

Every day, around 300 Australians are told they have a life-threatening cancer. With your help this Daffodil Day, we can make a difference and beat this disease. In 2012, Cancer Council Queensland will devote $27 million to cancer control initiatives, including investing almost $15 million into potentially lifesaving cancer research. Every dollar donated in support of Daffodil Day helps to grow hope for better treatments, hope for more survivors, and hope for a cancer free future. • $5.00 can help our Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 provide information, resources and access to support services for all Queenslanders affected by cancer. • $10.00 can help connect cancer patients and their carers with a trained volunteer who has experienced the same cancer for peer support and information.

The Caloundra and Hinterland Family Support Program is again recruiting people to train as volunteers to support families in the communities of the Hinterland who are experiencing difficulties. We are seeking people who have some time to spare and a caring, noncritical nature. The volunteer opportunity is open to both men and women of all ages. The Family Support Program has played a very important role in the lives of many families in Caloundra Program volunteer, Lee and the Hinterland communities. Family support provides emotional and practical support at times of stress and pressure, visiting families and providing supportive telephone contact. According to Lee, one of program’s volunteers, it allows her to offer practical support to local parents who lack the support of family or close community members. “Parenting is an enormous job, especially when the kids are little and unfortunately parents often don't have the support of family or close community these days.” “I see my role as providing the kind of support that extended family or neighbours would have once provided. As a Community parent (volunteer) I can offer practical support such as holding or playing with the baby and also emotional support in the form of being a kind listening ear. Visiting regularly allows me to build up a relationship with the family and the child and provide on-going support over time. I love knowing that I am helping in some small way to help parents raise happier families.” If you would like to be part of this valued service and make a difference to people’s lives please call the coordinator, Lisa Price, on 5491 4511.

Get ready for The Arty Pants Kid’s Festival 2012! This year’s Arty Pants Kid’s Festival will be held on Sunday, December 16. Jodie Bannister opened the doors of Café au Lait at the beginning of December last year and since then she has worked on creating the café which others are describing as a ‘destination with personality’. For those of you who know Jodie, or have seen her around town in what can only be described as a very vibrant wardrobe, you won’t be surprised by some of the gorgeous, slightly quirky features of the café’s décor. With big comfy sofa chairs, colourful chandeliers, and amazing 3D and felting artwork for sale, they have created a really welcoming and inviting atmosphere. Jodie likes to know her regular’s names and treats customers like friends who are dropping by for a regular catch up. Open seven days and serving an all-day breakfast,

along with lunch, as well as coffee and cakes, the food choices are great. Gluten free locals also have plenty of choices of sweet treats as well as gluten free bread for sandwiches and burgers. And for the non gluten free locals, I can confirm that ‘Joey’s Griddle Cakes’ are a truly spectacular version of pancakes. They are the kind of breakfast that keeps you going for the whole day and totally satisfies those with a sweet tooth. My day is never quite complete if I haven’t indulged in a great coffee, for me it must taste great, but I really love when it is served up like a work of art – Jodie has definitely got that covered – check out the photo below. Judging by the number of regulars they have

Café au Lait Dine In or Take Away

I am not alone in appreciating the coffee. Jodie explained that they now are using Milko coffee and more recently they have changed their coffee machine and grinder which has made a huge difference to the consistency with their coffees. Jodie is really pleased with the great team she has working with her and the only thing missing is an extra staff member that can take on some cooking duties. They need someone who can do flexible hours and handles a fast workload – so if you think you fit that description, pop in and introduce yourself to Jodie. Opening hours Monday – Friday 8.00am – 5.00pm, Saturday and Sunday, 9.00am – 4.00pm.

Out and About Plenty of smiles at playgroup Fun was the order of the day at a recent playgroup at the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church. Held every Wednesday from 9.00am, the morning is proving a popular way for mums and dads to catch up while the little ones enjoy a range of activities and toys. By the look of all these smiling faces, there is plenty to be happy about.

It's Dad's Day! Share in a day out with the animals!

What’s the plan for Father’s Day Father’s Day happens on the first Sunday of September each year, this year it’s September 2 so you haven’t got long to plan what you might do for dad on the day. There is so much Casey Watt you can do on our doorstep, that you won’t even need to waste too much precious time in the car. The Beerwah Hotel has made it easy for you. They have organised something special this year – along with their regular great menu they have Casey Watt to entertain you and your dad. Casey will be playing from 1.00pm in the bistro and their courtesy bus will be available from 12.00noon. To make sure you don’t miss out, call and book on 5494 0555. Or what about popping into one of top local butchers and grab dad a nice big steak to cook up on the barbecue, or if you are at the Beerwah Marketplace you might also want to grab some of those award winning sausages they sell. Pack up a picnic and head off to one of the great local spots for a picnic and some family fun. If your cooking skills aren’t that inspiring and breakfast in bed may not actually be treat – then why not head out in the morning for a big breakfast to give dad a nice filling start to the day. The team at Café Au Lait in Peachester Road, Beerwah do a great allday breakfast, or if you are in Landsborough then why not try out LattE Da Café who also have an excellent breakfast menu. Or if dad is a keen gardener why not take him down to the Glass House Mountains Garden Centre and have a look around – you can also wander up to Coffee and Tea Merchant on Steve Irwin Way for a coffee and a sweet treat (what dad wouldn’t love that).

How about a trip to Africa, and if that is out of the budget how about you treat dad to a family day at Australia Zoo and check out their amazing African experience? Australia Zoo has an action packed day of fun planned for Dad's special day. In true Aussie style you can kick off the day with a free ‘snag off the barbie’ - because you'll need a good feed for all the action and adventure on offer! There are lots of awesome prizes up for grabs, so be sure to enter dad into our competitions and be sure to have a go at the AFL Auskick Clinic! Kids can also get in on all the fun with free face painting, a colouring competition and kids rides, plus all the gorgeous wildlife entertainment and action of the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warrior show! Father’s Day is going to be a blast at Australia Zoo, where Crocs and Dads Rule! Visit www.australiazoo.com.au for all the details.

Does Dad love a coldie? If your father is a fan of a cold beer on a hot day, then he would probably love to win this year’s Father’s Day raffle at the Beerwah RSL. He would no doubt love his very own bar fridge and 5 cartons of beer to work his way through (obviously drinking them in a responsible manner!) Well for $2.00 or 3 for $5.00 you can get him a ticket to win this cool prize. Call into the reception at the Beerwah RSL to check out the prize in person and pick yourself up some tickets.

It's Dad's Day! Dad’s day is not too far away With Brownie Dads like to be spoilt. They may not say so – in fact most will get all blokey when asked what they’d like for Father’s Day. “Just to watch the footy in peace,” my dad used to say. But deep down they really, really want something special just for them. Gadgets are always good. How about a wind-up torch? Simply wind it up and you’ve got a torch that never needs batteries. You can also get a wind-up radio too. If you’re old-fashioned dad still has an old-fashioned tape measure, update him to the latest model. It has a built-in laser – how cool’s that? He’ll have hours of fun pretending he’s Darth Vader. Bob-the-builder dad might find an electronic wall stud finder a handy tool. And there’s hours of hilarious fun when he puts the machine on his chest, makes it beep and says ‘Yep, found a stud’. Classic dad joke, that one. For the petrol-head dad, what about an all-inone car kit? In a big bucket you get car wash, windscreen wash, wheel wash, car wax, washing sponge, cleaning cloth, tyre brush and a chamois. And you get a bucket too. What dad doesn’t love a machine that makes a lot of noise? If this is your dad, then you’re in luck, because you’ve got whole shops full of ideas. ‘Yep, found a stud’

ay! ! PERSONAL TRAINING Peter Thorpe is a seasoned Personal Trainer with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in psychology, and is able to give you the professional advice you need to prepare for triathlons, marathons, fun runs, pool/open water swims, key events, group and individual sessions, and tailored children’s programs.

KID’S TRIATHLON TRAINING

starting in September at Beerwah Pool Impact drills, cordless sanders, hedge trimmers, mulchers, chainsaws, leaf blower/vacs, wheel nut rattle guns, welders, grinders, air compressors, water blasters, planers…. the list is endless. If your dad is more the quieter, earth-father type, a lovely idea is to buy him a special tree. It could be a fruit tree, a flowering tree or a shady tree, or something which reflects his personality. You and he can then plant it together and you can tell him that whenever you look at the tree, you’ll be able to think of him. If he’s a strong character you could choose something big and tall like a Silky Oak. If he’s soft and loving, you could pick a Jacaranda. If he’s a grumpy old man, something prickly like a cactus is an option. Whatever you pick out, if it’s chosen with love and tenderness it will make your dad’s day. And doesn’t he deserve it once a year – even if he is a cranky old bugger for the other 364 days.

Negligent pooper scoopers

One of the many reasons my family moved to Mooloolah was the strong community spirit. What a shame that that same community spirit does not extend to some members of the dog owning community within Mooloolah. Some owners seem to think that it is perfectly acceptable to take their dog for a walk, and allow it to poop and then carry right on, not stopping to clear it up. A special mention must also go out to those owners that walk past Mooloolah School (yes, the school!) and also think that it is totally acceptable to leave the poop there. One of the health risks with this issue is Roundworm (one of the parasites present in poop), which children are especially at risk to due to their weaker immune systems. I love that I can walk my three young children to school, what a shame that we are continually avoiding poop not only on the grass verges but also on the pathways too (yes, children don’t just walk on the paths they like to run on the grass verges too, why not they are children). It is so frustrating (let alone unsanitary) to have one of my children step in poop on their way to/ from school or the centre of town. Whilst I completely accept that some of these culprits are wandering/escaped dogs, I cannot believe that it is all down to them. I know that there is one doggie station near the park that has the poop bags; however, as a dog owner it is your responsibility to pop a bag in your pocket to clear up Your dog’s poop. So come on to those dog owners, step up to your dog owning responsibility and Scoop Your Dogs Poop! C.King Mooloolah

Thankfulness

When you’re having a bad day, it is so easy to get way down by so many things. But over the last few weeks, I had some lovely experiences which made me stop and think about the things I was thankful for in our community. I would like to share a few with you. A local newspaper that is supportive, has friendly staff and are all about our community. Thanks Lea and the team, you are doing an awesome job. Also after needing to ring Andrew Powell’s office, how polite, helpful and understanding his office staff were, it made my day. We live in a beautiful part of the world and we have some great community groups, and it is good to be thankful for them. Donna Turner Glass House Mountains 22

Re: Enough is Enough, GCNews August 15

I read with interest your letter addressed to ‘those who attended the Christian College on August 4’. I am absolutely sure that the majority of people attending on the day were courteous and as respectful as possible under the circumstances. Yes, it is a significant event which does attract a large number of people. However, it is held only every two years and is viewed by most as a positive, community focussed event which allows many families to enjoy a day out in their local area. If there was an issue on your premises, I’d like to ask why the occupants of your residence did not walk down to the College and ask for this to be remedied? Local police also patrolled the event on several occasions and obviously did not notice the numerous parking infringements you have outlined either. I have no hesitation in saying that one of the officials on the day would have acted immediately, had they been given an opportunity to do so. I have to also question why you did not notice the radio and newspaper advertising along with the prominent signage in the community regarding the event? For you to quote a lack of respect is offensive. The Christian College instils very high values in their students and this is evident in their manner both within and outside of school hours. The families from our school community are the most giving and considerate I have ever come across. In relation to your other complaints, have you attempted to contact the College directly? As I know steps would have been taken immediately to address your concerns if you had. Please…..raise your concerns directly with the school. I’m sure you will be heard with the utmost respect. L McKenzie Beerwah

Another political waste of time

I refer to the intersection of Old Gympie Road and Peachester Road, once again I have attempted to get this upgraded either with a roundabout or traffic signalling. Our local state member Andrew Powell, together with Transport and Main Roads has once again come up with the same old story – ‘insufficient’ funds and not a priority at this time – same old political story. I hear nothing – I see nothing and I do nothing. I should have known better. Thanks for nothing. C.Batch, Beerwah

Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch

As readers will have seen in the article in the Glasshouse Country News August 15, Beerwah NHWQ was unable to fill the position of Deputy Area Co-ordinator at the AGM, and our Committee member plans to leave Beerwah soon. What was not included was the sad news that our Treasurer will also be leaving at the end of the year. Beerwah NHWQ has been going for 20 years, and most of its keenest supporters were in at the start, and now feel unable to take leading roles in the organisation. Also, the present Area Co-ordinator is going into his 10th year in that position and the Secretary into her 11th. All this means that we need new blood. Surely there are people in Beerwah, perhaps new to the area or recently retired, who are looking for a way to be involved in the local community? What better way than to help NHW? Police statistics show that areas with an active NHW have lower crime rates; it would be very sad if we had to close for the lack of a few helpers. If you are interested, please contact the Secretary, Sheila Williams 5439 0520, swilli17@dodo.com.au or the Area Co-ordinator, Ron Stocks 5497 4541, stonnie35@aapt.net. au ). Or, if you would prefer to look us over first, come along to the next meeting, 7.30pm on Monday, October 8 at Beerwah Library. Sheila Williams Secretary

Hinterland Relay for Life

Firstly I would like to thank Glasshouse Country News and local businesses for their support. The Relay will be held at Beerwah Sports Grounds on October 6-7 and we need your help. We are only seven weeks from the Cancer Council Fundraiser and currently have two committee members and five Teams. I am at a stage now where I am not embarrassed to beg for teams to join. Relay for Life is the largest Cancer Council fundraiser in Australia. On September 7 we are holding a ‘Embrace the Power of Purple’ day, asking local businesses and schools to get involved and go purple for the day, fundraising if possible. We will have a stall at the Beerwah Charity Sports Day, so come and have a chat; you can also ring Cancer Council on 5451 6003 or ring me on 0411 347 560 for more information. Maleny High School 25th anniversary 2012 marks the 25th year of the opening of Maleny High School. In the early years of the school, students travelled up the range from areas between Mooloolah and Beerburrum. Students and staff from any year of Maleny High School’s history can come along and meet their friends at a casual barbecue being held at the school from 4.00pm on Saturday, September 1. The barbecue is being operated by the school P&C Association and proceeds are directed towards further school improvements. Guests will be able to purchase the school cookbook for $20.00 as a souvenir. In the evening, the annual cultural event ‘Arts Exposed’ is taking place in the Activities Centre. To help with catering, potential visitors can ring the school on 5499 8111 or send an email to info@malenyshs.eq.edu.au www.gcnews.com.au

Forgiveness Unforgiveness devistates our lives. Corrie Ten Boon was Dutch. Her family hid Jewish people from the Nazi’s during the Second World War. When discovered, her whole family was thrown into prison camps. She never saw her parents again. She and her sister Betsy were put into Ravensbrook where her sister died from abuse. Through a clerical error, Corrie was released and she became a preacher. Her heart was so touched by forgiveness she wanted to preach to the German people about the love and forgiveness of God. She was preaching at a meeting one night on forgiveness and a man walked up to her and put his hand out to her. As she looked, horror entered her heart because he was one of the prison guards at Ravensbrook. The man looked at her in the eyes and said, ‘I was one of your prison guards. Will you forgive me?’

Horror filled her heart as she looked. He was as much responsible for her sister’s death as any other person. She realised that she did not have the power within her to forgive. She also knew what she had just preached. She brought her hand up to his and in her book she said that, ‘the moment I touched his hand something like a bolt of lightning shot up through my arm to my body.’ She said, ‘I forgive you sir with all my heart.’ She acted on her faith and disregarded her feelings and God did the rest. Then there were tears of reconciliation. You and I can have that. In her book she said, ‘to forgive is to set a prisoner free and to discover that the prisoner is you.’ To forgive is to set the captive free and to discover that the captive is you. Unforgiveness destroys and pollutes the heart. They defile the sanctuary. But forgiveness sets you free.

Real Estate and Financial Guide Rate Smart Investing For property investors, now is the time to capitalise on the RBA interest rate cuts of May and June and reconsider the financial position of your investment portfolio, says a leading property investment group. Kevin Young, Founder and CEO of The Investors Club, said with further rate cuts predicted this year, how Australia’s 1.7 million residential property investors use these newly acquired funds and manage their loans efficiently could make or break their portfolios. “Now could be the right time to add a new property to your portfolio. Currently, affordability is good, supply is short and demand will soon be very strong, which will lead to price growth. Making your next purchase now means you can get in before the masses catch on.” But be warned. Kevin has seen numerous traps in a falling interest rate market during his 40 years as a property consultant and investment mentor. “Make sure you pay attention to what’s happening in the banking market place and manage your loan efficiently. One of the key traps for inexperienced investors is the fixed loan. Many banks and credit unions are offering fixed rates as low as 5.79 for three-year periods.

However, the big banks posted profits of $25.6 billion for the year 2011-12 financial year. Kevin’s tips to help investors maximise their financial position with falling interest rates: 1. Use the extra cash wisely Make sure you put the money you save into paying off non-tax-deductable loans first, for example, the mortgage on your own home or credit card debts. 2. Use interest rate calculators to manage your loan efficiently What looks like a good deal now may end up costing more over the three-year fixed term. Kevin said he always recommends seeking professional advice, who, with the help of rate calculators, will determine which loan type is best for you. 3. Consider your next property purchase Kevin always recommends buying new properties, due to the ability to depreciate the costs of the building in your income tax and to avoid the high costs of maintaining second-hand properties. 4. Invest your super in property For many, property as an asset class is now more appealing than shares for superannuation-

funded investments. Residential investment property has achieved higher returns than shares measured in both 10 and 20-year periods up to December 31, 2011. 5. Consider small modifications to your property If you’re not able to add to your portfolio, Kevin recommends using your interest rate savings to undertake minor renovations or repairs to your property with the aim of increasing your rental return. The Investors Club encourages all property investors to seek professional advice before undertaking any new investment or reappraisal of property loans. WORK RELATED DEDUCTIONS Did you know that claiming all your work-related deduction entitlements may save considerable tax? Do you know what you are actually able to claim? In most situations, you can claim deductions for work-related expenses if your claim meets the following conditions:  You incurred the expense in doing your job. The expense is not private (personal). 24

|

|

 You can show you incurred the expense, by providing receipts or other written evidence.  If you are claiming a deduction for an expense you incurred partly for work and partly for personal purposes (such as mobile phone costs), you can only claim the proportion that relates directly to your work use. Typical work-related expenses which are

AUGUST 22 2012

allowable include uniforms, laundry of work specific clothing, employment-related telephone, mobile and internet costs, subscriptions, home office expenses, sun protection and union fees. These are just a few, there are many more expenses that could be claimed relating to specific job situations. You are required to keep receipts for these expenses but if you don’t have the

necessary receipts on hand you can still claim up to $300.00 of work-related expenses provided the claims relate to outgoings you necessarily incurred in doing your job. So don’t miss out on your deductions, contact us for Carolyn Wheeler further information on Woodford Office claiming these expenses. 1/116 Archer Street CM Wheeler & Associates Phone: 5496 1156 1/116 Archer Street, Woodford email: Phone: 5496 1156 cwheeler@caliph.net.au email: cwheeler@caliph.net.au www.gcnews.com.au

The medals around their neck say it all. These young players, members of the BeeGees Rhino Under 6 team, have just about finished their first ever season, and what a season it has been. According to the team’s manager Allanah, the team have really improved since their first game, and during their recent carnival at Caloundra, they were displaying their new team skills, working together, having a lot of fun, and building friendships at the same time. Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Kelly

It has been a huge week at Beerwah Golf Club, which saw us co-host, along with Caloundra Golf Club, the Wide Bay & Burnett District Women’s Golf Association Championships. Two hundred and twenty six players teamed up to vie for the title of District Foursomes Champion and the Gross event was taken out by Sue Jones and Lisa Ramen of Headland with a Gross score of 85. Our very own girls Mavis Brimelow and Lesley Eggleston were the winners of the Nett event with a great score of 70 ½. Runners up in the Nett were Karen Kemp and Jo Eccles, also of Beerwah. Monday was our day to host the first 18 holes of the two day B Grade Championship. The weather couldn’t have been better for the field of 125 players who came from as far as Bundaberg, to compete. While the B Graders were playing at Beerwah, 69 A Grade and 34 C Grade players were doing battle at Caloundra in their first rounds. The following day saw the venues reversed and the A and C Grades played at Beerwah while B Grade played at Caloundra. After two rounds, the outright winner and District Champion for 2012 is one of our own members, Hollie Sinclair. Hollie, who plays off a handicap of 2, took out the title with a combined two day gross score of 154. Runner up was Kathy Nelson of Bargara. The final day for B Grade, held at Caloundra Golf Club, came down to a sudden death playoff between Jenny Smallcombe from Mt Coolum and Bettina Scherer of Bargara. Jenny and Bettina both returned Gross totals of 188 for 36 holes, with the eventual winner being Bettina on the first playoff hole. Bettina is now The District B Grade Champion and also the winner of the ‘Mrs. Amy Pincott’ Trophy for the District Veteran Champion. C Grade also came down to a playoff and was eventually won by Caren Cassels of Headland. The complements were coming in even before the three days of competition were over. From the efficiency with which the field was put out, to the wonderful meals provided by the kitchen staff. All the hard work done by greens staff, committee members and volunteers paid off with the whole event being a great success.

Rank Outsiders Footy Tipping

The Relay for Life team The Rank Outsiders is running a tipping competition for both NRL and AFL final series to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Relay for Life is a fun, outdoor overnight fundraising event that brings communities together to celebrate and remember the lives of those who have battled cancer. Teams take turns to walk or run around a track whilst enjoying entertainment, activities and moving ceremonies. Every five minutes, another Australian is diagnosed with cancer. Footy tipping for AFL and NRL final series There will be a winner in both competitions. In the first week of the finals series choose a team you think will win, if that team wins you go through to the next round, if the team you chose loses then you are out of the competition. If you get as far as the grand final you need to choose the winning team and the margin, the person with the winning team and closest margin to the winning margin will win. Simple. If two people choose the same margin then the winnings will be halved. If there is a draw and the game is replayed then you can submit a new tip. On Monday after the finals you will receive an email with an update of the round. Cost is $5.00 for one code and $10.00 if you wish to go in both. Half of the money raised through the tipping competitions will be donated to The Rank Outsiders and the other half will go to the winner (in each code). How to get involved Email therankoutsiders@hotmail.com and put in the subject line Footy tipping AFL, or Footy tipping NRL or Footy tipping both We will then email you with details and make arrangements for payment. Some rules All payments are required prior to the first round of the finals. All tips are required to be submitted by 12.00noon on the day of the first final for that weekend. Only chose one team each round- emails containing more than one team will be returned. The finals commence on September 7, and run for four weeks. www.gcnews.com.au

Tuesday, August 14 - Pairs winners Gay Ricketts and Judy Walker and Rosemay Roderick and Ray Bryant. Friday, August 17 - winners were Mark Everest and John Esdaile and 2nd Netty Cook and Darren Black. Saturday winners Ray Bryant, Barry Russell and Lloyd Walker. Pennant girls are going well, keep it up. Very sad to hear of the passing of our Patron and great friend Jack Hampson.

Beerwah Bulldogs Contributed by Dean Roberts

The weekend saw the final games of the home and away season for the junior teams and we have three teams in contention for premiership honours. The Under 11’s will play their Grand Final at Bribie Island on Saturday, September 1 while the Under 12A’s will play their Semi Final at Caboolture v Maroochydore on Friday night and a win will see them secure at spot in the Grand Final at Beerwah on September 8. The Under 13C team will also play their Semi Final at Caboolture on Saturday v Coolum and success will see them continue on in the competition. Well done to all the other Beerwah teams on the way they played this season and it would be great to see everyone come along and support these three teams throughout their Under 12 vs Coolum finals campaigns.

Sign up for trail ride at Wamuran SCATER (Sunshine Coast Area Trail and Endurance Riders Inc) is holding their last competitive trail ride for the year at 128 O’Shea Road, Wamuran on Sunday, September 2. Riders will enjoy an 18 km trail ride over undulating forest trails and have 10 judge points or obstacles to negotiate along the way. SCATER is aware that many people just don’t have the time anymore to maintain their horses for the rigorous fitness needed for endurance riding, so competitive trail riding is a more relaxing sport. As always the health and well being of the horses is paramount and this ride will have an ideal time of three hours for individuals and three and a half hours for teams to complete the 18 km ride. The 10 judge points or obstacles provide a chance for horses and riders to show their abilities with going backwards, sideways, maybe picking up a hoof and putting on a raincoat as just a few examples. There are many different types of horsemanship judge points, so it is always a surprise for the riders as what they will encounter. This is a fun competition and people can ride either as individuals or teams but each rider or team leaves at three minute intervals. There are prizes for open, novice, junior and teams. To date SCATER has held successful competitive trail rides at Landsborough, Pomona and Imbil. Any horse riders who would like to compete or wish to know more, please contact Debbie or Brendan on 5496 6096, mobile 0407 167 581 or the SCATER Facebook or the website www.SCATER.com.au. Entries have to be in by August 30, so please check the website for nomination details and see you there!

Get ready to get stuffing

I don’t like to say it, but it’s only 125 days to Christmas. And what’s Christmas without cooking a roast or two. You can’t have a roast without stuffing, and you can’t have stuffing without those wonderfully fragrant herbs like sage, thyme and rosemary. I think that fresh home-grown herbs are so much better than the dried variety. So, if you haven’t got some growing in your backyard yet, it’s time to get the herb garden going for Christmas. All three of these herbs are easy to grow and do just as well in pots as in a garden patch. You need to remember that they are all of Mediterranean origin, which means they prefer well drained soils and full sun. To help with the drainage, dig some washed river sand through the soil and raise the bed up above the surrounding ground level. Another great thing about them all is that they can be easily grown from cuttings of plants from your friends or relatives herb garden. Sage is a strong flavoured herb and is used to add flavour to meats, veggies, fish and cheese dishes. The ancient Egyptians and Chinese believe that it improves brain function – and we can all do with a bit of that from time to time. Thyme is a favourite French cooking herb, along with bay leaves and marjoram, and is used in soups, red meat dishes, fish and sauces. It contains antiseptic oil which also has properties that help relieve colds and coughs. The oil is said to be a great lice treatment and skin tonic. The flowers of thyme are rather pretty and are very attractive for bees. Rosemary is traditionally used to enhance the flavour of lamb, but goes just as well with other red meats too. Steeped in warm water, a rosemary-scented infusion is used as a hair rinse, leaving your locks lovely and fresh smelling. A sprig of rosemary is used to signify remembrance, harking back to the days when the ANZAC diggers came across wild rosemary growing at Gallipoli. Another great way to grow these herbs is as rockery garden plants. Because they originate in the rocky grounds of the Mediterranean, they do well when grown in amongst rocks and gravel. Wet feet will kill them quicker than anything. So watch the watering, especially during the coming wetter humid summer months. Feed then every three or four months with a complete fertiliser or a slowrelease granule. Steer clear of the high nitrogen fertilisers, as it can be too rich for these hardy herbs.

Super Strawberry Round 7 Thanks to the growers who participated in Round 7 of the competition this week. We are still not seeing any record-breaking weights, but there is some serious competition. The winner of this round was Paradise Fruits, with an entry weighing 160 grams. There is only one round to go, but it is still possible to find the 2012 super strawberry. Any entry has the potential to win the weekly round, however for the overall champion we are looking for a strawberry weighing more than 175 grams (winner of Round 5). Round 8 closes at 5.00pm on Friday, August 24, and this is the last week of the competition. The final result will be announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports on Saturday, August 25, with the champion grower winning a dinner for two at Beerwah Hotel. The name of the grower will also be added to the shield which has recorded the Super Strawberry champions for the last 15 years. Thanks to Beerwah Hotel for sponsoring this competition, and to the staff at the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-op for supervising the weekly rounds. For information regarding the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival contact Bruce Page (5494 9557). www.gcnews.com.au

Have your say on the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve

The Mooloolah community are being asked by Council to provide feedback on the future design for the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve Master Plan. The scope of the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve Master Plan includes the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve located on Way Street and the area immediately to the east of the Reserve, currently the Mooloolah Pony Club. Cr Jenny McKay said they acknowledge the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve is an important facility to the local community as it has the potential to provide a key recreation, community and active living space for all to enjoy. “We will look at the current usage of the site and population projections to make sure it meets the current and future needs of the surrounding area,” she said. Cr McKay said a copy of the draft Master Plan will be on display at the Mooloolah Community Centre from Friday, August 17 until September 3. “We will have feedback forms available for the community to contribute their ideas on how they currently use the area and importantly what they would like to see it used for in the future.

A lady goes to her priest one day and tells him, “Father, I have a problem. I have two female parrots, but they only know to say one thing.” “What do they say?” the priest asked. They say, “hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?” “That's obscene!” the priest exclaimed. Then he thought for a moment. “You know,” he said, “I may have a solution to your problem. I have two male talking parrots, which I have taught to pray and read the Bible. Bring your two parrots over to my house, and we'll put them in the cage with Francis and Peter. My parrots can teach your parrots to pray and worship, and your parrots are sure to stop saying that phrase in no time.”

“Thank you,” the woman responded, “this may very well be the solution.” The next day, she brought her female parrots to the priest's house, as he ushered her in, she saw his two male parrots inside their cage holding rosary beads and praying. Impressed, she walked over and placed her parrots in with them. After a few minutes, the female parrots cried out in unison, “hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?” There was stunned silence. One male parrot looked over at the other male parrot and says, “put the beads away, Frank, our prayers have been answered!” Submitted by A.
