Hi Everyone... Regular readers will have noticed that in the past couple of months GC&M News has been featuring articles about the huge variety of events that are part of this year’s Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival, which is happening at the Beerwah Sportsground this Saturday. This incredible annual event, which has been raising funds for Cancer Council Qld since 1971, is organised by a dedicated group of locals who are passionate about contributing to funding of both cancer research and cancer patient support. As almost every family has been touched by cancer, it is this motivation that drives the Charity Sports Committee in the knowledge that they are helping to combat this terrible disease. Last year alone the group presented $26,000 to the Cancer Council, which may have been used to help someone close to you! So if you have been meaning to go along to the event and haven’t got around to it, or you are a regular attendee like me - I hope to see you there on the day. I will be the one with my notepad following Brownie around while he takes plenty of photos of happy smiling faces and great local produce.

Cover Story Charity Sports fundraiser and family fun The Beerwah Sportsground will be action central once again this Saturday, August 25 from 8.30am when the annual Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival kicks off. This year is the 47th event and there are plenty of old favourites on the 2018 program, including horse sports for all ages, Show & Shine, athletics and novelties, Queensland Strongest Man and Woman, photography competition, live music, tai chi and dance demonstrations, Talent Quest from 1pm, historic motorcycles, Maleny Light Horse, stalls with food and drinks, produce, plants and cakes, plus a variety of market stalls. A popular event is the Glasshouse Country Dog Jump, timed for around 1.30 pm, with good prize money on offer, so get those dogs in training. The novelty athletics will include the SEQ Ladies’ Broom Throwing Championship, a feature since the first Charity Sports day, as the photo from 1971 shows.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

The Kid’s Entertainment Tent will be the focus for children’s activities including a magician, face painter, balloon artist, colouring competition display, hoola hoop fun and an animal nursery nearby. Some new attractions on the program this year are the United Pro Wrestling demonstrations, street entertainment and a period costume competition celebrating 150 years for Gympie Road and Bankfoot House (don’t forget to visit the nearest “pre-loved” shop to create a costume). The pet parade is back on the program by popular request, with prizes for best presented and fancy dress. Bring your pet to the Kid’s Tent for judging at 11am. Thanks to local businesses and generous Glasshouse Country residents who sponsor events, and to community groups who help on the day. They have all made it possible to keep this fundraising project going for almost 50 years. If you would like to help, volunteers are welcome, especially setting up on Friday and on the day, or you can donate plants, produce or home cooking. The organisers are always thrilled when generous helpers appear with their contributions for the stalls. And everyone can help by being there! When you head to Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, August 25, you will be doing your bit towards the fight against cancer, and you can look forward to a great family day out.

A recent run of wildfires has prompted State Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford to remind Queenslanders to be on alert and ensure they have prepared their properties for the fire season. Mr Crawford said the state was in the grip of bushfire season and several recent blazes had shown that fires can start anywhere, at any time so it is important for all of us to be prepared. “Dangerous fire weather conditions took hold in the south-east and south-west corners of the state recently and moved north to central and western Queensland, with the fire danger reaching ‘very high’ in many areas,” Mr Crawford said. “We can expect to see fire dangers rise again in the coming days and they will reach heightened levels regularly in the near future.” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Katarina Carroll said firefighters were bracing for another challenging period on the back of the escalating bushfire risk. “A very high fire danger will envelop most of the state, meaning any bushfires that ignite could spread rapidly and be difficult to control,” Ms Carroll said. “We are facing strong wind gusts combining with warm weather and parched grass and bushland to fuel large fires.” The conditions have seen fire bans imposed across a number of local government areas, as well as recent suspensions of fire permits.

Mr Crawford said (QFES) staff and volunteers had been working hard to ensure communities were protected against the impacts of wild fires. “But I want to remind people of the role they can play in bushfire mitigation,” Mr Crawford said. “By taking action now to reduce fuel loads, residents can minimise the risk to their homes, neighbours and communities. It’s safeguards such as putting in fire breaks, mowing lawns and removing clippings, wood piles or green waste from yards that can protect homes and save lives when fires strike. “And households should also have a Bushfire Survival Plan, so they know how to prepare and what action to take if threatened by a bushfire,” he said. Mr Crawford urged people to immediately report any sign of fire to Triple Zero (000). To keep up to date with fire risks, follow QFES on Facebook (@QldFireandRescueService) and Twitter (@QldFES), stay tuned to your local radio station, and visit the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/map For bushfire preparation tips, visit the RFS website www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/BushFire_Safety. If you are interested in joining or helping a local rural fire brigade, call 5420 7517 to speak to a RFS officer who will point you in the right direction.

Landsborough development petition tabled A large, multiple unit development proposal for Landsborough has created enough community concern that more than 1000 people have signed a petition opposing it. Sponsored by the Landsborough Area Community Association (LACA), the petition asks Sunshine Coast Council to carefully consider the ramifications of the development application on the social, aesthetic and heritage values of Landsborough. Under the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, the development has been deemed ‘code assessable’. Because of this, there is no formal public submission or objection process available, meaning the petition is the only way the local community can have their voices officially heard.

Front: Don and Robyn McIntyre Back: Diana, Tammie, Haidee and Chris

The petition – which attracted 1041 signatures – was presented to Cr Rick Baberowski by the members of LACA and the ‘Landsborough – Love Where We Live’ action group. Cr Baberowski tabled the petition at last Thursday’s council meeting to highlight the level of community angst about this development to the other councillors. “This petition follows several community meetings (two of which I facilitated), and the recent formation of the ‘Landsborough, Love Where We Live’ group,” Cr Baberowski said. “This all illustrates why the community wants council to know just how strongly they feel about this proposed ‘unusual’ medium density development at a key gateway location in their country town. “As their objections explain it is unusual, firstly in terms of what they see as its dense and bulky ‘urban’ style and secondly in what they believe is a new development model, which introduces rooming accommodation and units designed to rent; which they believe potentially have important social, parking, and traffic impacts (amongst others) that were unanticipated by the scheme and are yet to be fully understood. “This is a good illustration of why it’s important to use the planning scheme amendment process to keep pace with undesirable changes that happen in a rapidly evolving development landscape,” Cr Baberowski said.

Cr Rick Baberowski receives the petition from Ann Husband (LACA), watched on by members of LACA and 'Landsborough - Love Where We Live' The petition now forms part of council’s official documentation relating to the development application and will be used to inform the development assessment team of the elevated level of community concern. The development application assessment has stalled after the council presented the developer with a 24-page letter detailing more than 100 non-compliant or inadequate issues and problems found with the development application. The developer has until early September to provide further information on the wide-ranging scope of issues.

New phone tower for Landsborough Telstra plans to build a new mobile phone tower at the Landsborough exchange and is seeking community feedback. But you don’t have much time to spare, according to State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle. “A representative from Kordia Solutions / Telstra wrote to me on August 10 advising of a proposal to install a new radiocommunications facility on the company’s existing telephone exchange at 6 Caloundra Street in Landsborough,” Mr McArdle said. “The correspondence states, ‘the purpose of the new facility is to enhance coverage of the surrounding area’.” According to background documents, the new tower is exempt from any Sunshine Coast Council planning requirements, as it is classed as a ‘low impact facility’ under the Telecommunications Act. The plans show that the tower will be located

on top of the existing exchange building, located behind Our Country Kitchen on Caloundra Street, and will provide Telstra 4GX services to the surrounding Landsborough area. “The Landsborough community will have until 5pm on Monday, August 27, 2018 to provide their feedback on this proposal,” Mr McArdle said. “More information about the facility can be found … by contacting Kordia Solutions directly on 3907 1430 or by visiting the project website www.rfnsa.com.au/4550004. “There is less than one week left to provide your comment on this proposal so if this matter concerns you, please submit your feedback as soon as possible.” Written feedback can be submitted to Kordia Solutions at Unit 1D, 400 Nudgee Road, Hendra QLD 4011 or at community.consultation@kordia.com.au.

Business News Simply stylish fundraiser

Maleny businesses 'Simply Stylish' and 'Imelda’s on Maple' are getting behind another great fashion parade and morning tea organised by the Maleny Catholic Ladies Group on Friday, September 14. The event will be held from 9.30am at the Pat Daley Function Centre, Maleny Catholic Church, 45 Cedar Street, Maleny. There will be multi-draw raffles and a lucky door prize and funds raised from the event will go to the Downs & West Community Support. For a number of years the group has been responding to the needs of drought stricken farmers with their annual event. Tickets are $10 and bookings are essential. Phone Pam on 5494 2487 to make sure you don’t miss out. Simply Stylish is also offering a ‘trade in’ your old bra promotion for customers to receive 25% off the marked price of any new bra (see their ad on page 5). The promotion is all about helping our sisters in drought areas of south-east Queensland. New and used bras will be sent to Sister Christine, who will distribute them to those in need. To find out more about the great work this organisation does go to their website www.downsandwestcommunitysupport.org.

More support for farmers Many local businesses have been generously showing their support for the many community fundraisers for drought-affected farmers.

DIY dog

Landsborough Laundromat has their own coin operated ‘dog hydrobath’ (located out the back) and the owners have generously decided that all money they receive from this service until Monday, August 27 will be donated to Drought Angles. The cost to use the hydrobath is $1 a minute and includes Fidos Shampoo and Flea Rinse options. The Landsborough Laundromat is located at 4/42 Cribb Street, Landsborough and the hydrobath is accessed via the driveway between the shops.

Buying five bales

Raine & Horne Beerwah is supporting drought relief for Rural Australia during August and September by donating five bales of hay to farmers in need for every new management signed up. They are doing this as part of the ‘Buy a Bale’ initiative, find out more about the organisation or donate directly to them at www.buyabale.com.au

Drought Angels

Residents of Twin Cedars Lifestyle Village had a successful Beef Stew and Damper lunch last Sunday raising $1,060. They were able to do this through generous donations from local businesses of goods and raffle prizes. Funds raised will go to Drought Angels in Chinchilla.

National Cross Country Titles

Next weekend will see plenty of cars requiring parking at the upcoming National Cross Country Championships to be held at the Maleny Golf Club. The Rotary Club of Maleny will co-ordinate the parking and will donate all money collected to the Farmer’s Drought Appeal.

Witta Recreation Club

The Witta Recreation Club opens the bar each Wednesday from 4.30-6.30 pm, and for the next month all profits from these evenings will be donated to the Farmer’s Appeal.

Update with Nicole Hilton Chamber President

Beerwah Dental Group

Business feature Dr Stephen Daniels and the team at Beerwah Dental Group have been serving both the Beerwah and surrounding area for over 20 years and Dr Daniels is very much looking forward to continuing to look after the community’s dental needs. Dr Daniels said there have been a lot of changes since he opened the practice in Beerwah just over 20 years ago and he is more excited

about dentistry today than ever. “Advancements in technology and regular attendance at dental education programs mean the standard and predictability of the dentistry that we provide is always on the rise,” he said. Dr Daniels firmly believes that dentistry should be a preventative medical service, but has the advanced dental skills required to perform restorative dentistry. “Most dental problems can be avoided with regular visits to a good dental practice and a proper home routine. “The importance of visiting us every six months is not only about having clean teeth and healthy gums but it also allows us to pick up on potential problems earlier, which can assist in avoiding expensive treatments later. “This is why we have introduced the No Gap $149 price structure for examination, scale and clean which hopefully means it is now easier than ever before to visit us.” Stephen and the team at Beerwah Dental Group love seeing both new patients and all the friends they have made over the past 20 years, so if you have not been to the dentist recently – maybe today is the day you should make that appointment.

This month we shared our Chamber Breakfast with the Montville Chamber with about 50 attending, which had the venue at capacity. Everyone was interested in the follow-up presentation by Visit Sunshine Coast “International Ready” presenting the group with 20 steps to help us through the process. We are happy to report that we have been working collaboratively with Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast (HTSC) to create a major tourism events calendar for the Hinterland. Our intention when we approached HTSC was to create one place advertising locally, nationally and internationally so if anyone wanted to know what is on in the Hinterland, this is the place to go. The events are being listed as we go to print. If you have a major tourism event you can list it for free. We are also happy to advise that we formed a collaboration with the major service clubs, coming together to see what the community needs that we can all pitch in to achieve. Out of our first meeting it was obvious that in order to enhance the events calendar we also needed a community calendar to capture smaller events and regular events across the Hinterland. It was agreed that this calendar should be hosted by the Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club (MDSRC) website with a link to the HTSC website for major tourism events. The HTSC website will have a link to MDSRC for visitors and the community to find out what is happening locally. MDSRC have received a grant from Maleny Credit Union Charitable Trust to start the rebuild of their website to accommodate the calendar. A lot is happening in our Chamber with another major announcement coming next month. In the meantime, join us for breakfast on September 11 at 7am at Spicers Tamarind. Sculpture on the Edge will be launched the day before and we think it fitting that the businesses celebrate this major event and thank the event coordinators Arts Connect Inc for the tireless work to put together this incredible feast for the eyes. If you can’t make our breakfast, ensure you find time to attend this event open from September 10-30. If you would like to join us for breakfast please go to www.malenycommerce.org.au and book online.

Time slowed down and the simple way of life is vastly different to the typically busy lives people lead in our part of the world. “One week in Epule Village, on Efate Island, felt like a month. So much in life there is so pure, from the organic food, to being outdoors all the time, to the kindness and goodwill amongst the people,” Natasha said. “I really enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the customs, lifestyle, thoughts and relationships of the Vanuatu people, and to see firsthand why a 2012 world study found them to be the happiest people in the world. “One main reason people said they are so happy is because they always connect with each other,

The only progress the people have been able to afford ($100) to rebuild their church in the last three years

Natasha Odgers with her Vanuatu village friends on Independence Day whether it be a simple wave and hello or stopping to share stories and loud laughs,” she said. Natasha also saw some of the hardships for the local people, explaining there is much work to rebuild roads and buildings still being done everywhere after the devastation of Cyclone Pam, which hit in 2015. Drought is also being felt in Vanuatu and the village water wells are at low levels. Natasha is raising funds towards at least one new water well and rebuilding of the main church in Epule Village, with a goal to raise a minimum of $1,000. Funds sent directly to Natasha’s new friends in the village will go directly to the Chief of the village, who will arrange local people to rebuild their infrastructure. If you would like to support Natasha’s fundraising efforts please text or call Natasha for deposit details on 0418 720 515.

Talented Maleny youngster Georgia Goodall entered this year’s Exhibition’s Sewing competition with a two-piece casual outfit she had made, coming second in the Class 1 Self Made Junior School (grade 5-9 inclusive) category. The outfit was a dress in blue patterned cotton, with the skirt cut on the cross and joined to a lined bodice and finished with an invisible zip. The dress was teamed with a denim collared bolero with pocket flaps. She top stitched the bolero in a contrast thread and completed the flaps with covered buttons from dress fabric. Georgia modelled her outfit with pride and was very excited with her second placing in the category. The judges were impressed with the entries and found it hard to choose a winner. Georgia is a student at Narelle Thamm Sewing School in Maleny. If you know of any other local winners as part of this year’s Exhibition email their stories to editorial@gcnews.com.au

More Mega than imagined

The recent Mega Garage Sale organised by students and college pastors at Glasshouse Christian College was a huge success. There was perfect weather, great food, entertainment for the kids and a mega amount of bargains on the day, especially with Mike’s crazy spot sales of $1 an item. Glasshouse Christian College Pastor, Fiona Cran said she would like to give a big shout out to the community who donated a mega amount of quality items and to those who supported by coming and buying up. “We had an amazing team of volunteers from all four schools which included staff, students and supporters of chaplaincy. “They worked hard together but enjoyed the day knowing that it is more blessed to give than receive. “Together we raised $3,800 for our local chaplains Mike Turner at Beerwah Primary and High and Steph Alksne at Beerburrum Primary. “That will go a long way to providing funds for the chaplaincy service which supports students,” Fiona said. Both Chappie Mike and Chappie Steph were interviewed on the day and shared with those attending the passion they have for helping young people thrive and succeed in life. Both Chappies were very grateful to everyone who made the day happen. Items not sold on the day were donated to Lifeline and the Beerwah Recycle Market to continue to be used to raise funds for our community.

Free tinnitus relief study

Hinterland Audiometrist David Hine has over 35 years of experience with the hard of hearing. During that time he has seen many cases of people suffering tinnitus. Tinnitus is a physical condition experienced as noises or ringing in the ears or head where no such external noise is present. Around 15% of the world’s population can experience tinnitus to some degree, which can range in severity from a minor irritant to causing major misery and stress. Following the success of the Zen Tinnitus Program in Europe in recent years, David is keen to introduce the same to the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. However, he would first like to run a free trial of the program to ensure that the evidence meets the overseas claims. In this regard he is seeking a group of tinnitus sufferers to take part in a six-week trial starting in mid-September. Participants will be selected following an interview and completion of an intake questionnaire and a standard Tinnitus Functional Index Survey. Ten successful participants are required for the study. Should you wish to apply, early registration is recommended. Contact David Hine (Dip Aud) on 5493 0382 or 0428 961 744.

Photographer supports welcome for new residents

Local landscape photographer Ben Messina has been a supporter of the Maleny and District Welcome Dinner for several years. This year his photograph titled ‘Stargazing’, which is valued at more than $1,000, will be first prize in the raffle to be drawn at the 13th annual Maleny and Blackall Range Lions Welcome Dinner, to be held on September 19 at the Maleny Show Pavilion. Ben will also display several of his other photos, highlighting the beautiful Hinterland, on the night. The evening includes a buffet meal catered for by The Orangery. The raffle, lucky door prizes and an auction are all part of the event, as well as four guest speakers and displays from local community groups. Newcomers who attend will learn more about the local area they now call home and the many things it has to offer. Newcomers also take home an information bag and plants donated by Barung Landcare Association, which will form part of the table decoration on the night. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased from Maleny Optical, Shop 8, Riverside Centre, 8 Maple Street, Maleny and Maleny Realty at 44 Maple Street, Maleny. MooFest is back

Mooloolah’s family-friendly music festival MooFest is back for another year with a foot tapping line up of live music, inspirational guests, heaps of activities, stalls, fireworks and more on Saturday September 15, from 1-7pm. Along with funk-tastic headliners Bearfoot, stage acts throughout the event will include Nathan Fawcett and the Breakthrough Band, Nickeby the Magician and special guest Sam Childers aka The Machine Gun Preacher who will conduct a ‘meet and greet’. Organiser Nat Pettingill is excited to be putting on another Moofest, which is fast becoming a popular annual event, regularly drawing crowds of 1,500 to the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve. “I feel like we’ve now cemented Moofest as an annual community event. With such incredible support from the local community and sponsors that we just want to keep going,” laughs Nat. Other entertainment includes V8 dirt modified cars, a circus skills display, fantastic fireworks and more. Sunshine Coast Salt FM will also be

Charitable Trust spreading the love

Maleny Credit Union (MCU) Charitable Trust has presented funds to a number of local community groups, including the Maleny State High School P&C, Knitfest Inc, Friends of Pattemore House and the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC), so they can continue to benefit the community. Maleny State High School P&C received funds for the ‘Kids Caring for our Future’ project, which designs and brands reusable / sustainable bags currently selling at Maleny IGA. The bags are high quality and likely to outlast others on the market, and the supply chain has been checked to ensure they are ethically produced. The MDSRC funds will be used to rebuild its website to provide the more than 50 clubs under its banner a place to each host their own web page on the website. This will give them a digital presence without the associated costs as well as providing a space for the new community events calendar. Knitfest Inc received funds to help buy a container to store the 60+ storage containers of knitted products created by the large community contingent that comes together early each year to knit the wonderful creations we see around town at Knitfest time each year. Friends of Pattemore House Inc received funds that will be combined with funds from Sunshine Coast Council to create two short films to capture memories and anecdotes as seen through the eyes of Pattemore family descendants.

Maleny trail ride is back

Contributed by Levon Stewart Green Park will once again host the best off-road motorcycling event on the calendar on the weekend of September 8-9. The Maleny Trail Riders Club is proud to be able to host the incredible twoday trail ride that attracts riders and families from all over Australia every second year. The fact that the event books out within 24 hours of entries being open attests to its popularity in the riding fraternity. The event consists of two different loops of the challenging steep terrain of about 80km each. More than 600 riders will take part in the open trail and a shortened section provides plenty of fun for novices and children. This event is not a race and is strictly monitored to ensure the safety of participants and causes minimum impact to the environment. Strict controls are in place to prevent the spread of weeds and all motorcycles must be cleaned before entry to the course. The club acknowledges that the event can only be held with the cooperation of more than 50 landholders who allow their properties to be used and the generous financial support of the event sponsors. The event is a massive undertaking by such small club and all profits are divided between local groups and charities, including individual grants to local children to help with their sporting careers. There will also be entertainment and some competitions held in the campground and everyone is welcome to attend. Head to 1156 Maleny Kenilworth Road, Elaman Creek to check it out.

Environment

Barung Landcare Have you seen the Barung? The long-nosed potoroo (Potorous tridactylus) – also known as the Barung – is a small, nocturnal marsupial in the rat-kangaroo family. It looks like a bandicoot but hops with its front feet tucked in close to its chest, like a bettong or wallaby. The long-nosed potoroo is 'Luke' the rescued Barung nocturnal, spending much of its time in understorey vegetation. It needs thick groundcover for protection and nesting material. It is an omnivore feeding on underground (hypogeous) fruiting bodies of fungi, as well as roots, fruit, flowers, seeds and insects. Fungi are an important part of the potoroo's diet. These marsupials are known to eat at least 50 fungal species. The spread of spores via droppings performs an important ecological role, helping to establish beneficial mycorrhizal plant / fungi relationships. Preferring a range of vegetation types, from rainforest and open forest to coastal heaths, the Barung was once fairly common in the local area but is now rare. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species classifies it as ‘near threatened’. The main threats to this native animal include habitat destruction, dogs, cats and foxes, and destruction of understorey growth through land clearing. Sadly, most of the handful of recent sightings in the Blackall Range area have been roadkill. However, an orphaned joey (whose mother was killed by a python) was raised by local Wilvo Carmel. Have you spotted a Barung? Please let us know if you have – drop us a line at info@barunglandcare.org.au

Environment Levy partnerships funding

Sunshine Coast Council last week allocated funding totaling $609,734 from the Environment Levy Funding program to 22 individual environmental groups. Hinterland Kids Fiver for a farmer day

Country kitchen continues

The children of Beerwah Kindy were eager to join their community in supporting our drought-stricken farmers. The children’s interest initially came from their very own water shortage. The outdoor water pump for the children’s digging patch is fed by the rainwater tank which has been dry for several months. This issue generated a lot of conversations around water shortage and ways we could conserve water in our everyday practices. Supporting our Kindy friends to become more environmentally responsible and aware, we discussed the bigger issue of drought for our rural farmers. There was a wonderful show of support from the Kindy families when the decision was made to join the ‘Fiver for a Farmer Day’. The Kindy raised $150 to go towards Rural Aid and Drought Angels. The game of cricket has been around for hundreds of years and is played by more than 120 million boys and girls, men and women worldwide, making it the world's second most popular sport. Did you know that in Australia in 2017 there were 3,622 cricket clubs, 1,429,529 people participated in cricket, and 393,735 were women. There are some pretty good reasons to play cricket … apart from it being just good fun. Cricket boosts stamina, balance and coordination. Cricket games require players to be fit and active as there is lots of sprinting and running is involved when stopping balls or scoring a run. Players also need to have good hand-eye coordination for batting, bowling, catching and throwing the ball. Cricket keeps your brain in shape. What separates cricket from many other sports is that it requires players to have impressive focus and strategic skills. It’s like a game of chess, just played in the open on a big grassy field. Cricket instils sportsmanship and discipline. Being a competitive game, cricket teaches the value of sportsmanship and discipline. Players must behave properly on the field, observe fair play at all times, respect other players and conform to the rules. Cricket helps build social connections. Being a team sport that cuts through the boundaries of class, age and gender, you will be encouraged to work with others and be exposed to a diverse social community. This is especially important for children when they are formulating good lifelong social behavioural attitudes. Local club cricket provides the opportunity to be exposed to all these benefits with the backing of a supportive local cricketing community. Whether you have just played in the backyard, at school or on the beach, cricket clubs are thriving community hubs that provide a great environment for making friends and developing cricket skills. And as cricket clubs are volunteer and community-based organisations, parents can also get involved as a volunteer, coach, umpire, scorer or committee member.

You Said It Re: Shouldn’t be tolerated

I take issue with several points made in the letter from Olive Hockings in GC&M News, August 8, regarding proposed union visits to high schools. First, many secondary students are already in the workforce and need, more than older people, to be made aware of their rights - which, by the way, have been hard won by our unions. These students are not 'children'. Secondly, we are not talking about some weird cult brainwashing of the innocent! Unions are a legitimate institution in our civilised society and I see nothing harmful in young people being kept informed. The sentence 'peddle their extreme views to impressionable kids ......' is full of bias and negativity. Since when have unions been 'extreme'? Hopefully, our 'impressionable kids' have been taught to think for themselves and will not experience information as 'confronting'. Schools are not, and should not be, 'politics free zones'. Again, the words 'shove their views onto others' are negative and biased. Let's not forget the role of unions in creating safe work places, liveable wages and regulated hours. Deborah Yffer Maleny

RE Mike & Bev Brough

I agree with your letter about inappropriate development being approved in the hinterland. One area which deserves close consideration occurs when a developer lodges an application for ‘multi-unit’ residential development use in a Medium Density Zone, where the allowable number of equivalent dwellings per hectare exceeds that specified in the town plan for that Zone, which then places that application in the High Density Zone. An actual example is in Beerwah where a multi-unit development application in a Medium Density Zone for 28 units on a site was approved. This equates to an equivalent 63 dwellings per hectare (using Council’s formula). But the allowable dwellings should only be 30 to 50 maximum per hectare – so it’s 13 dwellings over the limit. This density places it in the High Density Residential category (ie, in excess of the maximum 50 allowed). The result … Council approval was granted for the entire 28 units applied for, even though this exceeds that which is allowable as per the Planning Scheme. Under the Planning Scheme, 22 units should have been the maximum approved in the Medium Density Zone.

CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

This has presented the developer with a nice little bonus of some six units which equates to approximately $90,000 pa in rental income, made all the sweeter by virtue of not having to comply to the town plan rules. This approval is not an isolated case, with similar approvals having been granted despite the number of equivalent units exceeding that specified in the Planning Scheme. Somewhere along the line a precedent has been set by Council which has now become the norm. The applicant in the case above was reportedly quoted as stating that approval by Council “is not a problem as similar rationale has been applied in developments on the Sunshine Coast…” Enough said at this stage! John Weekes Beerwah

Carcinogenic potential

Richard Giles (GC&M News, August 15) attempts to link brain tumours to the radiation from NBN towers. However, he doesn’t mention that the radiation from a NBN tower is orders of magnitude less than the radiation you get from a mobile phone held against your head. If we're worried about cancer, we should be more concerned about the pesticides sprayed all around us. For instance, the chemical trichlorfon (brand name Lepidex) is sprayed in avocado orchards in Maleny. This chemical is banned in the EU, US, NZ, Brazil, Argentina, India and more, yet for some unaccountable reason it's still being used on crops in semi-residential areas in Australia. There are numerous studies linking organophosphate insecticides like trichlorfon with cancer, so their carcinogenic potential is beyond debate, unlike NBN towers, which the experts insist do not cause cancer. So let's not miss the wood for the trees, people. Write to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Association and ask for action on chemicals like trichlorfon, and make Maleny and the Hinterland a safer place to live! Gerry Muller Maleny

What is a community asset?

The purpose of the Community Parks Maleny campaign is to encourage the leadership of our sport and recreation fraternity here in Maleny to appreciate that the goal they hold dear - community health and wellbeing - depends as much on informal

SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519

recreation in community parks as on formal activities in purpose-designed spaces and venues such as field sports, lap-swimming and fitness training. The evidence for this is unequivocal as the Healthy Parks, Healthy People movement makes clear - see www.hphpcentral.com. It is commendable that the golf course doubles occasionally as a cross-country course for people who enjoy competitive running but a community park is open all day, every day, to everyone, old and young, fit and frail, children, oldies and dogs. It is this that makes the trajectory of the Maleny Community Precinct so alarming. The expansion of the golf course to 18 holes is one thing, never mind the myth that Maleny is or ever will be a headline golfing / sporting destination, with copious data to show that people visit the Hinterland to experience nature. Even more disturbing is a plan to make one of the Precinct's most beautiful, natural, outdoor spaces within walking distance of town the site of a 'fitness village' for various indoor facilities. Not only are the sponsors of the concept refusing to consider off-Precinct sites, Council is bowing to that condition. Maleny is a town like any other. It does not need to be divided for any reason at all, least of all on the meretricious issue of sports versus parks. Jane Hyde Community Parks Maleny communitymaleny.org

Thanks so much

I just want to express my thanks to Jill and Helen for them help in bringing me home from downtown Beerwah when I was very sick. Gwen Kippen

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You

I would like to express my thanks to all those that participated in the launch of my new book, ‘Anne’ Revenge is Sweet, but Love is Sweeter. With sponsorships, book sales and donations we have raised $1,020 for the Blue Care Nurses. Although it was a small event, it once again proved the appreciation by our local people of this active and helping organisation. Congratulations to the winners of the door prizes - Kay Kellaway (tray of books), Doris Pedder (beautiful picture frame) and Jan Hunter (‘Follow your dreams’ mug). Thank you everyone, especially Glasshouse Country and Maleny News for their assistance with promotion. Kate Wright Glass House Mountains

“I’ve been referring my mates to the credit union too because I like their loan referral program. If one of my mates takes out a loan with the credit union, I get $100 cash and a $50 voucher to use in a local business in town.” Thanks Corey, we like our customer loan referral program as well. Many local customers are enjoying the extra cash and spending up with their $50 vouchers which in turn helps local businesses in their town, whenever that may be.

Living - Arts In the Blink of an Eye.

By Sonia Clark ‘In the Blink of An Eye’ is an expansive youth dance project facilitated by independent dance artist Melissa Lanham of LJ Projects. Six months of preparation culminated in recent (almost) sold out performances held at Venue 114 (formerly known as Lake Kawana Community Centre). The project involved 90 dancers, with dance students from seven schools including Maleny High and Beerwah High. This is the third year that Melissa has coordinated this type of youth dance engagement project and the idea comes from her international dance work and a similar concept developed by the British Arts Council. Melissa said the hour-long performance was incredibly well received and was conducted using ‘alternative space’ within the venue, which allowed the performing artists to be at the same level as the audience. “The performance was danced in a bespoke performance space in the shape of a huge cross 20 metres in length and 3.5 metres wide. We wanted to create a performance that fused the months of work by the individual schools involved,” Melissa said. This work followed Melissa’s previous sold out youth dance shows, ‘Fury’ and ‘Counter World’ and draws on her extensive 25-year dance teaching experience, choreography and creative expression work. Melissa is currently working on a new project with designer Melanie J Designs, ‘Femininus’ for the 2018 Horizon Festival to be held at the Arts and Ecology Centre Tanawha, and later this year will be trialing an ‘artist in residence’ pilot out of the Caloundra Events Centre. To find out more about her work visit melissalchoreography.com

Set in 1983 in picturesque northern Italy, this 2017 coming-of-age drama depicts the romantic relationship between 17-year-old American-Italian Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old postgraduate student of Elio’s father, a professor of archaeology. The bookish and musically gifted Elio lives with his mother and father in a sumptuous villa surrounded by the trappings of intellectual and cultural privilege. Each year his father invites an American student to work with him and live with the family. This year, the student is Oliver, about whom Elio becomes increasingly curious. In the languorous summer days that follow, he reads, plays the piano and guitar, while an attraction develops between the two young men. Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by James Ivory (Howards End, Room with a View), Call Me by Your Name was the recipient of numerous accolades for its performances, screenplay, direction and music. Described by one reviewer as a "melancholy, powerfully affecting portrait of first love", the film also explores the loving relationship between father and son. Call Me by Your Name contains some nudity and sex scenes. So highly acclaimed was it that a sequel is planned. From the churches A common frustration for some church-going people is that church representatives do not speak up when moral issues are being debated in society. Of course, others think we speak too much or they disagree strongly with such longheld Christian beliefs. However, many moral issues require detailed explanation, sensitivity towards anyone who has struggled with issues and a willingness to understand that morality is lived in a contemporary society. The issue of abortion is a case in point. Normally much sensitivity is demanded before public statements can be proclaimed. This, however, is certainly not the case with the abortion legislation that is proposed by the Queensland Government. Its contents are the greatest threat to the unborn that can be imagined. That a civilised society can place the survival of a fullterm infant at the mere whim of the woman is frightening. Both lives matter. Similar legislation to that proposed in Queensland already exists in Victoria. There are already

Tuesday, September 4 – Jeanie will speak on her experience of living in China for more than 8 years. Bring a plate to share at the Neighbourhood Centre. The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, is located at lot 4 Ryan St (opposite the Post Office). To find out more please phone 5438 7000 or email admin@ghmnc.com CONDITIONS: To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words.

Father Kevin Smith Catholic Church recorded cases of a near full-term infant being left to die after being aborted because the woman exercised her legal right to have the child killed. All that was required for this to happen was the request of the woman, approval of a doctor and the approval of a second medical professional, who is not even required to have met the pregnant woman. When there is so much justified discussion on the terrible consequences of domestic violence it is confounding to be proposing this sort of violence in the most intimate of domestic settings. Both lives matter and everything possible to support the lives of mother and child is the sign of a responsible and compassionate society. We already have wonderful expertise to nurture and support life in the womb because life is indeed precious, not just for the lucky ones but for all.

A few weeks back, Therese Wilson sent us some photos of a garden plant she wanted to know the name of. Thanks go to the local garden gurus who contacted the office to say it was a type of poinsettia. Checking with renowned Mooloolah horticulturalist and owner of Mellum Creek Nursery, Stephen Flood, he confirmed it is a poinsettia called Triple Poinsettia (or Euphorbia pulcherrima plenissima). One caller said she referred to it as “Triple Curl” poinsettia.

Being of the poinsettia group, it responds well to being pruned back after flowering (September / October), to a few buds from the ground. The pruned canes can be struck as cuttings and given to friends as gifts. Poinsettias flower in response to shortening daylight hours. So plant them in an open space, but away from night-time lights. The best illustration of this is when you see Snowflake (the white flowering poinsettia shrub) flowering away beautifully, except on the side which faces a street light.

Do you know what to do in the event of a bushfire? We live in an area that is not immune to the devastating effects of bushfires, as seen at the weekend with the fires near Mount Beerwah and Peachester. That’s the up-shot of living in one of the most beautiful natural areas in Australia. If you don’t think you’re at risk, the Queensland Rural Fire Service (QFRS) wants you to ask yourself the following questions: • Do you live within a few kilometres of bushland? • Does your local area have a bushfire history? • Do you have trees and shrubs within 20 metres of your house? • Is your home built on a slope? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you are likely to be at a heightened risk. The QFRS suggests that we all take some time to be prepared. Prepare your home, property and family now and have your Bushfire Survival Plan in place before a bushfire strikes. If you do not have a Bushfire Survival Plan, the QFRS website

(www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/BushFire_Safety) has an easy-to-use guide to help you create one. The website looks at what you can do to prepare for bushfire season; what to consider if you plan to stay in the event of a bushfire; what you need to know if you decide to leave early; and how to keep up to date with information on fire risks and situations. In the event of a fire, here’s what QFRS suggests: • Activate your Bushfire Survival Plan. • Advise family and friends of your plan. • Listen to your local radio station or visit the QFRS website for regular updates. • Close windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure. • If you suffer from a respiratory condition, keep your medication close by. • Drive with caution in low visibility conditions. • Contact your neighbours to check if they need help to prepare for the bushfire. • Pack important documents and essential items (eg, passports, birth certificates, prescription medication, food and water, and protective clothing) in case you need to leave the area. • Put on protective clothing (eg, a long-sleeved cotton shirt, boots with thick soles). • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. • Bring pets inside; restrain them with a leash, a cage or inside a secure room; and provide them with plenty of water. • Take action to protect your livestock. • Move flammable materials such as doormats, wheelie bins, and outdoor furniture away from your house. • Fill containers such as your bath, sinks and buckets with water so you have access to drinking water and firefighting water. • Close windows and doors, sealing the gaps under doors and screens with wet towels to keep smoke out of the house. Knowing a few of these simple things could help save your life or that of a loved one or neighbour.

Transform your outdoor living space Charmak Landscape Construction is a Peachester based landscaping business that services the Hinterland and Sunshine Coast region from North Brisbane to Gympie. Consisting of husband and wife team Ryan & Krysty Idle, the dynamite duo offer competitive pricing, friendly honest service, and an excellent standard of work. They have the skills, equipment and expertise to transform and update your backyard, premises or outdoor living space. Ryan is a structural landscaper by trade with over 15 years industry experience and Krysty has over 10 years of design background. Before establishing their own business two and a

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

half years ago, Ryan worked as a commercial landscaper on the Coast specialising in large scale housing and council landscape work. Wanting to achieve a more productive home/ life balance and allow time with their two young daughters Charlotte and Mackenzie (who sometimes ‘help’ by coming along to job quotes), Ryan and Krysty set up Charmak (named after a blend of their daughters’ names) and haven’t looked back since. Krysty says that feedback has been awesome, and that most of their business has been from either repeat clients or new clients from referral or word of mouth. “People seem to be really pleased with what

we offer, and we are always happy to come out and suggest design or landscaping ideas to help clients achieve their desired outdoor space. Good landscaping can really add value to property as well as providing a more satisfying living environment.” says Krysty. The couple particularly enjoy creating wonderful backyard renovations, however they also offer a range of stand alone outdoor design and landscaping services such as paving, fencing, concreting and retainer wall work. “We get a lot of comments about our service which is great – and the fact that Ryan and I always turn up when we say we will. We are always happy to come out for a free quote and spend time with people to fully understand what they need in order to achieve the best possible results” explains Krysty. As well as running their business, over the years’ the couple have been happy to donate their time and skills to assist local community groups achieve their landscaping goals. For example, Peachester Playgroup was recently awarded a $20,000 grant to install new playground equipment. While the grant generously provided for the supply of materials, it wasn’t enough to cover the landscaping and all material costs – so Charmak Landscape Construction stepped in and donated additional materials and their time to ensure the work was completed. As a local family run business, Krysty and Ryan are always keen to support services that benefit families in the local community. To find out more, give Krysty a call on 0400 175 134 or visit their website http:// charmaklandscape.com.au/ or Facebook page.

Happy Birthday

With Spencer and Karen Shaw

Wow, it’s been three years since we opened our doors at Forest Heart and thank you for the wonderful support we have received in establishing the first commercial retail native plant nursery focusing on the indigenous (local) native plants of south East Queensland. We stock a great range of amazing local natives but also stock a wide range of Australian native cultivar grevilleas, bottle brushes, hedging lillypillies and many more to appeal to all Aussie native plant lovers. We also carry a great range of fruit trees from a growing list of suppliers, so plenty of variety and increasing all the time. Citrus, blueberries, olives, mulberry, avocado, mango, pecan and many more. We also stock nest boxes, native flora and fauna books, organic fertilisers, mulches, potting mixes. The most exciting part of our business is that as time goes on our range of great local native plants increases and with over 3500 species of local native’s plants in South East Queensland, we’ve certainly got our work cut out for us. Thanks again for your support so far and if you haven’t had a chance to pop in yet come a check our great range. All the best, Spencer and Karen.

Natives naturally for your garden

Birds, bats and bees in our backyards is the message behind the free ‘Native Naturally for your Garden’ event being held by the Friends of Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens on Sunday, September 15, from 8am–3pm. The Friends group have once again teamed up with local experts and groups including Native Plants Sunshine Coast to present the event. The popular program of speakers will include experts in stingless native bees, gardens for wildlife and bats as pollinators. A special treat for local gardeners will be ‘breakfast with the birds’ from 7.30am and a bird walk with FaunaWatch. The day also includes free advice, displays, plant information and guided garden walks, as well as plants for sale. The Friends will provide a sausage sizzle at lunchtime and the Compass Garden Café will sell coffees and light refreshments throughout the event. The Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens are located on Palm Creek Road, Tanawha. More details about the event are available on the Friends’ website www.friendsofmaroochybotanicgardens.org.au

Is your equipment Spring ready? Spring is just around the corner which means the grass is about to start growing. When was the last time you had your power equipment checked or serviced? Now is the best time to get your outdoor power equipment ready and serviced for the Spring/Summer season. Here are just a few tips from the team at Maleny Mowers on how to keep your gear running smoothly and safely this growing season: • Always keep your air filter clean as your engine likes to breath freely • Use only fresh fuel • Check the old spark plug - you can visually inspect the spark plug for deposits, cracked porcelain or burnt electrodes • Is your deck cutting even? If you have an even cutting deck, the result is a much more even cut and a way better finish. An uneven deck will scalp and damage your lawn

• Make sure your blades are sharp and not bent • Check all your belts to make sure they are all in good condition. There is nothing worse than getting half way through the job and your belt fails • Always check the oil levels before starting your mower A basic service on any ride on should always include; functions check, adjust cables & linkages, clean & adjust deck, replace fuel filter, clean/replace air filter, replace spark plug, clean cooling fans, replace engine oil, replace oil filter, lubricate grease points, adjust tyre pressures, inspect battery, inspect belts, inspect blades, inspect steering, inspect transmission, check & adjust fasteners, test & clean the mower. These are just the minimum items required for a service, which the team at Maleny Mowers will always ensure is done correctly the first time.

At Maleny Mowers we take pride in our workmanship and guarantee our work. If you are having mechanical issues or just want to bring everything in for a service and check, give Chris, Marcia and the team a call on 5494 3144. If you are not able to bring your mower/equipment to the workshop, Maleny Mowers also offers a pick-up and delivery service.

Backyard Stickybeak Ambience and interest makes for a great garden At this year’s Gardening on the Edge weekend in June organised by the Maleny Garden Club, six garden owners opened their gates and allowed hordes of visitors to wander about. It’s not an easy thing to do and I expect it evokes all sorts of imagined misgivings. Will the garden be interesting to other people, will there be enough in flower at the time, have I done enough tidying up, will the weather behave itself, will the visitors behave themselves … it’s enough to send any gardener around the bend. Most Gardening on the Edge visitors are looking for something different, something inspiring, something attractive and something from which they can take away not just memories, but a few practical ideas for their own gardens. Tucked away in Witta, Jo-Anne and Bill Dickinson had a fairly quiet life – that is until they put their hand up to be an open garden in this year’s Gardening on the Edge. Their two and a half hectares of lush tropical gardens is a sight to behold. The garden forms a calming backdrop to their bed and breakfast – called Parklands Guesthouse retreat – and it’s easy to see why people would want to stay and linger.

Your

Home &

The property is made up of a number of different garden zones, set within the natural forested expanse. Connecting these zones is a fantastic network of pathways, which wind through the landscape, taking you on a journey of discovery. Their use of pathways is a great example of how to make them more than just traffic corridors. Good pathways should not be noticeable in themselves … they should unconsciously guide the traveller along, making the focus of their attention the landscape or the feature to which the pathway is leading to or through. Anchoring this garden to the landscape is the treelined stream which runs through it. A creek is a gift to any gardener, as it not only gives you the opportunity to create some truly wonderful scenic vistas, but it gives a life and movement to a garden which is continually changing. Jo-Anne and Bill have used their stream to perfection. The path runs along both sides, giving the wanderer differing views across it and the landscape beyond. They’ve also used the rocks within the stream to construct stone structures, which look eerie, in the dappled gloom created under the tree-lined stream edges.

To cross the stream, they’ve given visitors the option of a sturdy covered bridge or a set of stepping stones, to rock hop your way across. The bridge, being higher up, gives the viewer the chance to look down onto a pooled area. This is always a good idea, as it draws you in to stare into the water, hopeful in seeing something moving beneath … maybe a platypus? One of the standout parts of this garden – and something which isn’t a feature easily created in any old garden – is the bamboo chapel. This large circular stand of giant bamboo has a narrow walkway though it into a hidden central open space. Once you discover how to get in, it’s like you’ve entered into a soaring cathedral of bamboo poles. You can’t help but stand and look straight up into the towering space above. It is definitely the envy of any gardener. But one which would take many years of patience to create from scratch … so Jo-Anne and Bill are very fortunate to be the recipient of someone else's

foresight. It was a pleasure spending the two hours wandering about their garden and being captivated by the spaces, colours and forms. But then again, that’s the hallmark of a good garden.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Assn (MNC) invites you to attend their AGM on Thursday, 30 August 2018 at 4 - 6pm. There will be music, drinks, and finger food served afterwards. If you are interested in being a member of the Committee please contact the Secretary, Graham Dempster on 5499 9345. Nominations close on 16th August 2018. RSVP for catering 5499 9345. GMAN Native Plant Sale 25th August 2018 The cooler weather is still with us which means that it is a good time to plant without the fear of our gardens dying from heat stress. It is a good idea to plant now in readiness for spring rains which hopefully will be with us soon. Our nursery has good stocks of local tree species and shrubs just waiting to be planted. Due to many requests at our free tree hand out for National Tree Day, we plan to hold a native plant sale on Saturday 25th August. Look for us at Uniting Park Glass House Mountains from 8am to 11.30am. All tube stock still only $1. Enquiries Gwen 5493 0029 TIBRO’S NETBALL CLUB INC AGM will be held on Saturday 8 September 2018 at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club commencing at 3.30pm. Nomination forms for committee positions are available at www.tibros.qld.netball.com.au or by calling 0411 204 286. These are to be forwarded to tibrosnetball1@gmail.com no later than 1 September 2018.

Sport 2018 Glasshouse District Track and Field Contributed by Stephanie Harvey The District Track and Field Carnival for 10–12 year olds was held at Skippy Park, Landsborough on August 9-10, with 17 schools competing, including the small schools that make up the Mountain Small Schools and Coastal Small Schools teams. The District has welcomed several new schools in the past two years and in 2018 welcomed Baringa State School, the new school in the Aura development on the eastern side of the highway. St Michael’s College from Caboolture won the Overall Points Trophy on 178 points with Glasshouse Christian College coming in second on 148, followed by Elimbah, Kilcoy and Beerwah state schools. St Michael’s College was also the winner in the Average Points Trophy (total points divided by enrolment numbers) on 0.609, with Kilcoy SS second on 0.551 and Beerwah SS on 0.400, followed by Elimbah and Glass House Mountains state schools. The age champions attending local schools were: • Multi-class (girls) - Seanna from Maleny SS and multi-class (boys) - Ryan from Maleny SS. • Nine years (girls) champion - Makayla from Beerwah SS and Bella from Glass House Mountains SS, with runner up Savannah from Maleny SS.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club • Nine years (boys) runner up - Marcio from Glass House Mountains SS. • Ten years (girls) champion - Abby from Glass House Mountains SS. • Ten years (boys) champion - Elijah from Elimbah SS and runner up Tamati from Landsborough SS. • 11 years (girls) runner ups - Deziah from Beerwah SS and Lily from GCC. • 11 years (boys) runners up - Jared from GCC, Daniel from Glass House Mountains SS and Jake from GCC. • 12 years (boys) year 6 champion - Nizam from Maleny SS, and year 7 Jaiden from GCC. • 12 years (girls) Year 7 - Nicole from GCC. Students who qualified will be part of the Glasshouse Track and Field team to compete at the Regional Track and Field Carnival at the Sunshine Coast University on September 11-12. Special thanks to Mr Jason Spies – PE teacher at Landsborough/Mapleton SS – who convened the carnival and to Sister Anne and Miss Bernadette Day who assisted with the management and preparation of programs and results. The Glasshouse District School Sport would like to thank the Little Athletics Association based at Skippy Park for its continued support hosting the event, running the canteen and allowing use of its athletics equipment.

Contributed by Brenda Briese Thanks to the fine weather we are seeing more run on the fairways but, as usual, never being happy, we now look forward to some rain! Speaking of rain - much in the news at present - the club will hold a game on Saturday, September 8 with proceeds from the day to go to drought relief. In addition, next Thursday, August 23 is a men's invitation day and the proceeds from our raffle will go to the appeal as well. So let’s dig deep! Onto the results. Saturday, August 11 was a Stableford with 19 participants. The winner with 36 points was Jill Downes, on a count back the runner up was Joan Swyny also on 36. NTPs: 2 Jill Downes, 5 and 16 - Jo Malone. 18 – (second shot) Sonia Kenway. BRD to 33 points. Thursday, August 16 we played a team event called a Tiger Ball Stableford with 48 ladies (24 pairs). The scores of both players are multiplied on the hole. This can be a bit deadly, as if one player perhaps scores a three point and the other doesn't score it's a big zero! Anyway it's a bit of fun. Winners were Teresa Keast and Cece Proud on 80 points, and runners up were Lesley Eggleston and Mavis Brimelow on 78. NTPs: 2 - Teresa Keast and Cece Proud, 5 - Heather Henn and Cathy Stone, 16 Lea Doyle and Karen Gannon, 18 - Lorraine Sharkey and Ruth Parish. BRD went to 70 Jill Downes points.

Beerwah State High School Contributed by Steven Jeffery The weather gods were on our side for two fantastic days at the 2018 Coastal District 12-19 Years Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to Beerwah State High School for taking the Overall Percentage Champion School with another very convincing win this year. With a points’ score of 3.57, the nearest competitor was Siena coming in second on 2.69 and Unity third on 2.37 points. Beerwah also had 20 students selected in the District Team to attend the Regional Carnival. The Beerwah Athletics Development (B.A.D.) Squad has been gaining momentum and with a new long jump track being installed at the high school later this year, the future looks bright for the already talented students. The Percentage Trophy is calculated by dividing points from the carnival by the school’s enrolment.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ken Barker Jan Barnes and Kath Smith played a game of doubles against Donna Manning and Vince Carbery on Thursday. Long cups of tea ensued with the scores unchanged but after tea Jan and Kath won 12–7. Round 8 of the Bray was played away at Coolum on Saturday. Maleny fielded Sarah Widin (Captain), Kath Smith and Robert Elliot. Coolum players were Heather Smith and Ian Marshall. Despite giving five bisques to Ian, Robert won convincingly 17–7, but Sarah went down 5–7 to Heather in a dour struggle. This meant, as has happened so often, that the outcome of the round would be decided by the doubles. Kath and Sarah were matched against Heather and Ian and it couldn’t have been tighter. After 2.5 hours the scores were eight all. The next hoop would win. Kath bombed the hoop only making it three-quarters of the way through. Coolum had to make the roquet to win. They didn’t. Kath completed the hoop and Maleny won 9–8. Maleny took the round two games to one. Well done the Bray team! On Wednesday the Lochwood team consisting of Donna, Ken and Nick suffered their first defeat of the season going down to Bribie 1-2. Ken lost to Greg Whymark 11–26. Donna beat Lynda Davies 26–6 but the exciting doubles decider was won by Greg and Lynda who downed Donna and Nick 21–18. Well done Bribie. This was the last Lochwood fixture of what has proved to be a very enjoyable season for all players - Vince and Val Carbery, Donna, Nick and Ken. Well done that team. The pennants season is drawing to a close with only a couple of games left in the Bray, but the club championships are just around the corner. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1pm for 1.30 pm start. On Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Contributed by Graeme Glover Tuesday morning games saw Steve and Mo Lawrence advance through to the final of the mixed pairs. Well done to Steve and Mo who will play Miles Allen and Kay Gesch in the final. All the best to both teams. Thanks to all who have made themselves available to play in any championship games. Our regular Tuesday games saw some real change in form, and it was hard to predict what was about to happen. John, Sandra and Marg ran away with the event with some powerful bowls after the break in the second round of games. Congratulations folks. On Wednesday teams travelled to Kilcoy for their triples day, Congratulations to Jim W, Miles A and Graeme G on their two wins. Wednesday night saw some more new faces join the fun of bowls (beer on tap and barbeque, all welcome at 6pm for 6.30pm start). The big shock was the defeat of the Handels. The Amigoes are showing signs of a form turnaround so don't be surprised to see them move up the ladder. Paul Kemp is proving to be a good replacement for Christine Lister and Ian is now a lot happier with his new members’ form, with touchers and quality bowls now the norm. Scott Alexander dropped by and found himself in the middle of a game as a replacement for Judith L who did a great job on bar duties. Scroungers saw a new main man in Jim W. Thanks Jim for coordinating this event for members and visitors. All welcome at 2pm for 2.30pm start. We had five great games, all hotly contested with winners being Gary D, Kay G, Ray P, Mo L and Marg G. Congratulations all the winners and also well done to everyone who played and stayed on for the club draw.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wagtails outcome did not mirror the closeness of the competition, with the final score being four sets each, 34-39. However, Maroochydore Sapphires won by five points. Thank you to Cynthia and Sonia and a special thank you to Pauline and Barbara for filling in for our injured players. Whisters played at Witta, against Caloundra Racquettes. It was warm and perfect for tennis and everyone enjoyed being on the court. It started with a tie-breaker but then we all geared up and had a good finish. Score was 48-17 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats were away to Caloundra Skylarks. It was another close match but the Wildcats held firm and were the victors. The team was Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Sonia. Final score four sets each, 36-30 games. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Tuesday, August 14: Ladies Pennant vs Bribie Island (away), Division 3, round 5, it is always a tough game away at Bribie. Our ladies were outplayed on both rinks losing by 3 and 25 shots. With the final game this week, we needed a huge win of 46 or more. Wednesday, August 15: Ladies Pennant vs Bribie (home), Division 3, round 6, the final game. A great win for our ladies who won both rinks to have an overall score of 47-22. The win of 25 shots was brilliant but was not enough to get first spot from Bribie, so runner-ups for 2018. Well done. Social - Jenny Hobson and David Wiley def Marilyn Boulton and John Annakin 21-10; Rhyliss Aitken and Ron Wilson def Noelle Dean and Bruce Angus 18-17; Noelene Annakin, Graeme Meyers and Dennis Hume def Margaret Beasley, Russell Walmsley and John Aitken 2018. Thursday, August 16: Social - winners on the day were Col Johnson and David Wiley with two wins on + 13 margin. Runner up on a count back with the lowest winning margin in either game was Bob Bloomer and John Annakin with + 1 margin. Lucky draw went to Mac Townson and Rob Scullion. Saturday, August 18: Men’s Pennant, round 7. Division 4 away to Solander Lake. It was a ripper of a game, Glasshouse went down by only one shot overall against the team on top of the ladder. Next week’s game is home to Narangba. Division 5, home to Donnybrook was a fantastic afternoon with a great bunch of people. The home side got up on both rinks to defeat the top of the table Donnybrook by six shots. Next week’s game is away at Bongaree, a win will keep us in touch with top spot. It’s that time of the year to start thinking about our Spring Carnival. Please let players from outside the club know it will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14, cost is $55 each. Flyers are available from our office. Our AGM will be held Saturday, September 8, 10am at Club Glass House. Our current board will all be back but we still have a position to fill - fairly easy, catering coordinator. We also need some new people on a Thursday to help in the office. 45

Getting married

Jack, aged 92, and Gill, aged 89, are all excited about their decision to get married. They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way pass a chemist shop. Jack suggests they go in. Jack addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the owner?" The pharmacist answers, "Yes." Jack: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?" Pharmacist: "Of course we do." Jack: "How about medicine for circulation?" Pharmacist: "All kinds" Jack: "Medicine for rheumatism?" Pharmacist: "Definitely." Jack: "How about suppositories?" Pharmacist: "Yes"

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 The weekend sees the Full Moon giving you a signal that it is a good time to keep a low profile. That would be one way of avoiding someone’s insistent demands! There is potential for making progress in the material, financial, job and health realms. A surge of creativity makes something old seem new again! Mars kicks you into high action. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 There are opposing points of view that can lead to stubborn positions by the end of the week. However, over the weekend make something old come alive again! Start up something fresh and have it solidly based for the long term. The Full Moon over the weekend sets off high social connections, but perhaps doing too much in a pressuring way. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Broad expansive far-flung ideas are circulating! Change, with a potential or real, is the sort that freshens things up without disrupting the status-quo. This Full Moon weekend provides a chance to take a creative original step concerning your home, family or career. Things are working together to go around something that holds you back now. CANCER June 24 - 22 July 22 A personal project or shared ambition gets off the ground with flying colours. The results may be spectacular! The Full Moon stresses into a tough situation stand-off. You may have to wait a few days to clearly see how to release it. Mars in Capricorn goes direct, recharging partners with assertive and ambitious moves. Best to be financially conservative.

Week Beginning 22/08/18

Jack: "Medicine for memory problems, arthritis and Alzheimer's?" Pharmacist: "Yes, a large variety. The works." Jack: "What about vitamins, sleeping pills, antidotes for Parkinson's disease?" Pharmacist: "Absolutely." Jack: "Everything for heartburn and indigestion?" Pharmacist: "We do..." Jack: "You sell wheelchairs and walkers and canes?" Pharmacist: "All speeds and sizes." Jack: "Adult incontinence pants?" Pharmacist: "Yes." Jack: "Then we'd like to use this store for our wedding present list..." Contributed by Hugh Jones Beerwah

LEO July 23 – August 22 An unexpected development opens up fresh possibilities in the financial arena, making it possible to acquire something you want. The Full Moon at the weekend is a happy one for success either in finance or career. At the beginning of the week one-on-one discussions are best in your personal life. Mars turning direct shifts you into optimistic view. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Mobilise your resources to make something new again, or create a vital pathway to an exciting long-term future. Charming smart companions will be a special gift for you over the weekend, under the Full Moon. With Mars turning direct in Capricorn it restacks your retrievable ambitions in love, work and parenting. Emotional complications. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 During, and after the weekend’s Full Moon, the day surrounding it spotlights work and health bringing unexpected changes that you will welcome. Act slowly but deliberately after Monday as Mars heads forward again. Your ideas can seem fun, original and creative, but they need to do some explaining. Give attention to financial matters. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The Full Moon may, this weekend, set off confusion about intimate love connections. This is because there is an intensifying, jealous and competitive pressure zone building! Mars being your co-ruling planet, goes direct in Capricorn, so you can look for communications to be ambitious again and ideas to be fruitful and achievement oriented.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Expect an exciting development, or breakthrough contact, to send your job prospects soaring! You can probably touch many bases concerning an array of interests. The Full Moon weekend advises you about property matters and to check that they are on target. Be careful what you share with a jealous person! Some sort of emergency. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This Full Moon weekend is on your communication and travel axis and charting. It is best to avoid a power struggle about which direction to go. Mars, going direct now in your sign, frees up all the old blocked personal and professional energies. However, use moderation as Mars picks up speed for the following week. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 There is a chance for a quick breakthrough which can easily be incorporated into current structures, without disrupting things. This Full Moon weekend brings a chance to break free from something that has been holding you back, it seems that money can play a role in this. An old relationship pattern is apt to surface reviving doubts. PISCES February 20 - March 20 A mighty joint project with a friend can produce dynamically successful results. Get a new venture off the ground, or add better ideas to something old. The Full Moon this weekend draws a dividing line between your feelings and others, and you are not to make a new business venture on top of any foggy perspectives now.
