Hi Everyone Valentine’s Day might be over but romance is definitely still in the air in our office, with our wedding feature in next week’s edition there is plenty of discussion about how and where people say ‘I Do’. But I have to say one of the most romantic stories I have heard lately is when I was chatting to Glasshouse local Glenda Halpin who along with her husband Neil, recently returned from a trip of a lifetime to Antarctica. (see their story on page 5). A young Australian couple that was travelling in their group took the opportunity of being in such a beautiful location and got married, with the ship’s captain performing the ceremony and all those in the group attending the wedding. Obviously not all couples need such a dramatic location to wed, but it seems these days it is very much about creating an event that is

unique to the couple and suits their personalities. If you have a good yarn about something lovely that you have seen at a wedding, or some great advice / tips for couples who are about to walk down the aisle, please send us an email on editorial@gcnews. com.au Regards,

Local News
Cadence’s quest to be brave She looks like any other bright, bubbly threeyear-old, but Cadence Henry’s captivating smile and beaming eyes belie a very serious and complex medical condition for which there is no exact cure. For her parents, Glass House residents Grayson and Angela, since her diagnosis earlier this year, life is now a constant stream of medical appointments and regular therapy, and the ever present worry about how they will pay for what is expected to be between six and 12 months of ongoing treatment. In the limited spare time they have, the couple have set up the Cadence Foundation, and are desperately calling on the support of the local community and businesses to help them raise funds to help pay for Cadence’s medical costs, which they expect to cost anywhere from $35,000 to $80,000. Cadence suffers from a complex combination of neurobiological conditions rarely seen in children. Since Christmas Day, it has recurrently caused the nerves that supply motor function to her body, facial muscles, throat and larynx, to become paralysed. Where a normal persons nervous system responds to physical life-threatening situations, for example severe hemorrhaging, through automated, involuntary, systematic shutting down of muscles and organs not necessary for our immediate survival, Cadence’s nervous system commences this process in response to everyday events.
“In Cadence, the parts of her brain responsible for interpreting and evaluating the level of threat, or danger, to her survival, the Limbic system and Cerebal cortex, malfunction, triggering the involuntary shutting down of her body, which sees Cadence experience many normal interactions and events, both in fear and as a very real threat to her survival,” said Grayson. Cadence effectively becomes trapped in her body, sometimes for several days at a time. She experiences Dysphagia (paralysis of the nerves supplying function to her pharynx), Aphonia (paralysis of the larynx), and Hypokinetic Movement Disorder. Dysphagia and Aphonia are serious neurological disorders normally seen in stroke patients and motor neuron disease, leaving Cadence unable to swallow or speak and cause her to have difficulty with breathing, along with the sensation of suffocation; and, similar to people affected by Parkinsons Disease, Hypokinetic Movement Disorder causes Cadence to become rigid, stiff, expressionless and at times, unable to move. Earlier this month, Angela was forced to resuscitate Cadence after she nearly drowned on her own saliva, as a result of a complication associated with Dysphagia. “As parents it’s our job to safe-guard our children, but being in a position where you are forcefully breathing air into your child, compressing their tiny chest, is absolutely horrifying; there are no words to describe it.” Continued on page 8

Local mum Jackie Hall remembers too vividly the day that she fell apart one too many times. After embarking on the search for REAL answers to motherhood stress and discovering a way to prevent it, along with depression and anxiety, Jackie, the author of ‘The Happy Mum Handbook’ is continuing her mission to educate mums on how to prevent this mental illness. As a trained Life Coach, course facilitator and now employee of the Anti-depression Association of Australia, Jackie, who recently moved to Landsborough from Melbourne, is using a unique and effective method to help mums to understand and overcome postnatal depression. It’s unlike anything else out there. Jackie said this is not just another book about how to raise children, or that tells mums to take time out or walk away when angry. A specific tool is used to change her mindset and help her to embrace the challenges of motherhood. This tool also incorporates the method used by the Anti-depression Association of Australia, who has helped over 4,000 clients with stress, depression and anxiety.

She has created an online 12 week course (www. postpartumdepressionrecovery.com), free webinars, a four part webinar series and one-onone coaching as well. ‘The Happy Mum Handbook’ is also available in hard copy, audio or digital at www.selfhelpformums.com, and in all major bookstores. There are a few things to consider. Does your landscaper guarantee their work? What do their previous clients say? Is your landscaper licensed with the BSA for your protection? Structural landscaping needs to be done properly so that you can enjoy it for years to come while adding value to the investment in your home. A dream come true
Words are not enough when it comes to sharing details of one local couple’s recent journey to the bottom of the earth. Glenda and Neil Halpin’s self described ‘dream come true’ was a magical 26 day voyage to Antarctica on the Russian ship ‘Akademik Shokalskiy’ with Aurora Expeditions .
An interested bystander checks out Glenda taking a break catching up on stories from home
Penguins on ice Originally the couple had hoped they would be able to visit Mawson’s Hut on Commonwealth Bay, to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the famed Australian explorer’s epic journey, as part of their epic adventure. But nature had other plans for them, when they were confronted with approximately 20 kilometres of impenetrable 'fast ice' against the continent's shore, preventing land and sea access. This certainly didn’t detract from their enjoyment of their journey though, which was highlighted with many breathtaking experiences, including a walk on an iceberg adjacent to the Antarctica plateau), Zodiac boating around icebergs, an unplanned wedding on the ice (not theirs!), and a late afternoon (10.00pm) read of Glasshouse Country News on the ice in the company of some very friendly penguins.
The couple also recount meeting up with the Australian ice breaker 'Aurora Australis' mid ocean whilst out in Zodiacs and chatting with the ABC film crew, visiting the sub Antarctic Islands, and all the spectacular scenery and nature that they encountered on their journey.
Colony of of Royal Penguins
Quite simply, their trip was a ‘dream come true’. The Beerwah couple are happy to share details of their journey with any others who might at some stage be interested in travelling to Antarctica. Just give them a call on 5494 6853, and they would be only too pleased to share.

But he does know there are plenty of parents who are forever grateful for helping them turn their children’s lives around. Wayne isn’t a counsellor or a teacher, he’s a boxing coach. For the past 16 years, he’s trained more than a few amateur boxers to success at both state and national level, and he’s even trained a few to Golden Glove glory. But the years of dedication to his sport have taken their toll, and Wayne is now looking for new members and assistant coaches to help him keep the sport alive. “It’s the ultimate in fitness,” Wayne said. He said it’s one of the hardest sports around, both physically and mentally, but it’s the discipline and self control of a boxer that sets them apart.

True CommitmentWorking for You For the past 13 years my husband Jeff and I have worked full time in our own business (Beerburrum Service Centre) and during that time both of us have met many people from all walks of life. Originally the business offered fuel as well as the mechanical repairs it continues to offer today. I spent 10 years on our forecourt — rain, hail or shine — pumping petrol and sharing life experiences with not only locals but also people from all around the world. Looking back, this was one of the most educational experiences of my life. I learnt to ‘never judge a book by its cover‛, or one‛s car for that matter, and to always weigh up all the ideas and different options before making a firm decision. In more recent years I have added relevant formal qualifications including a full TAFE Diploma of Business and, more recently, a Graduate Diploma with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Many councils have made it mandatory for incoming councillors to undertake this graduate diploma to ensure they possess a thorough knowledge of the fiduciary duties and compliance rules associated with their governance role. If elected I intend to utilise these skills to move Division 1 forward.

Former student and boxing champion Jay Marshall And while it’s a very demanding sport, with training three nights a week and regular weekend travel to competitions, it’s worth it. “It’s a sport that turns lives around,” said Wayne. Over the years, Wayne has made a number of improvements to the boxing club’s premises at the rear of the Mooloolah Valley Country Club, and doesn’t want to see it closed down due to a lack of interest and participation. With its own gym and training facilities, the club is well set up to support a new breed of young amateur boxers, he said. “I want to share my passion and experience with others, and keep this sport alive in the hinterland,” Wayne said. So if you’ve got an interest in the sport as a participant or are keen to find out if you’ve got what it takes to become a coach, give Wayne a call on 0428 158 058.

The 'how to' of how to publish a book They say everyone has a book inside of them. Most won’t become bestsellers, many more won’t even get published. But for every book that does find its way, there is a separate tale behind the story that reads of the trials and tribulations of the budding author. One person who knows all too well about those trials and tribulations is editor and author’s consultant, Landsborough resident Alex Mitchell. For those who have ever dreamed of writing a book, it’s no doubt a little disheartening to learn that 82 per cent of authors never finish writing their book, but with the right support, advice and guidance, Alex is on a mission to help improve the odds. And she is certainly passionate about her role, which is to help authors make the journey from manuscript to finished product. She set up her business, Author Support Services, more than four years ago after seeing a gap in the market, a need for someone to help the creative mind behind a manuscript take the next steps in what can be a long and convoluted editing and publishing process. Alex, who is also a single mother, bookkeeper, part time snake wrestler and facilitator of the Sunshine Coast Women Entrepreneurs Group said it was the personal satisfaction of helping authors reach that ‘light bulb’ moment, when they gain the confidence and understanding they need to move forward and complete their publishing journey. Conversely, the most difficult part of her job she likens to being a doctor.
“Authors come to me because they’ve got a problem, and it’s my job to give them an honest appraisal of just what that problem is, and how they need to fix it,” Alex said. And it is often a long road. Alex said it generally can take anywhere from two months to 20 years to write a book, and it can be a fairly lonely and mysterious process. “There is a lot of information around about how to write and how to get published, but it can be hard to find your way through the mass of information and discover how to write the book YOU want to write, for YOUR market,” Alex said. “Our events provide a space where people can make real progress on their own project, discovering how to put together their book in a way that speaks their message to the world clearly and concisely.”

It’s hip to hip hop
Know how to shuffle? What about doing the Spongebob Squarepants? If it sounds like a foreign language, perhaps you are just not hip. But that is hardly the case for the students at Teghan’s Dance Club at Peachester.
Kody, Kobi and Shiloh's smooth hip hop moves www.gcnews.com.au
They’re young, they’re energetic and they love to dance. And that’s just the girls. Kobi Smith, Kody Helen and Shiloh Crawford also love to dance, and they’ve found the perfect beat with their instructor Teghan, in their weekly Hip Hop classes. For 11-year-old Kobi, who has been dancing since he was five, dancing is in his blood. Big sister Teghan, who set up her own dance club last year, has danced nearly all her life, and that passion has obviously rubbed off on her little brother. Kody Helen is also 11, and a desire to learn how to ‘shuffle’ saw him turn up for his first class last year, and he hasn’t looked back. Shiloh Crawford, who turns 10 this year, had to be dragged along to his first class by his mum, but now he’s her biggest fan, as not only can he dance, but he knows all the ‘cool’ moves. Every Thursday, the boys spend an hour perfecting their moves as part of the boys only dance class, one of four different classes Teghan offers each week. Of course, the girls are catered for as well, and even the mums can have a go, with their own class later in the afternoon. Teghan said dancing was a great way to exercise. “Not only that, it sparks the children’s creativity, and it’s a great way to make friends,” she said. To find out more about Teghan’s Dance Club, which kicks off for the year tomorrow, give Margaret a call on 5494 9192, or simply turn up at the Peachester Hall from 3.30pm tomorrow afternoon and check out the latest dance craze for yourself.

Rick takes out prestigious award Beerwah resident and candidate for Division 1 in the upcoming Council election Rick Baberowski has collected the Queensland award for outstanding individual achievement in the Museums and Galleries sector.
The GAMAA (Gallery and Museum Achievement Award) is awarded each year by a panel of independent judges to an individual who has contributed to the sector, and comes with a $1,000 prize.
The judge’s summary stated that ‘Richard Baberowski was nominated for the projects he delivered from 2008 to 2011 at Moreton Bay Regional Council. Richard’s vision and commitment to creativity and originality is reflected in a significant list of new and innovative infrastructure projects he directed during this period.’ Rick's projects at Moreton Bay Council included, among others, the redevelopment of Caboolture Historical Village, the delivery of the awardwinning Bribie Island Seaside Museum and as senior advisor to the team that delivered the new Caboolture Hub project. The judges said Richard’s innovation, vision and exemplary project management had maximised the region’s rich cultural potential by engaging with leading-edge design concepts, new technologies, and new standards of practice in contemporary infrastructure design, exhibition design, public programming and operational initiatives.
Continued from page 3 There is no direct cure for Cadence’s condition, however it is believed that intensive rehabilitation and brain stimulation therapy will enable other modalities of Cadence’s nervous system to ‘take over’, or compensate for, the parts that dysfunction. “The alternative is our little girl living and experiencing life in constant fear and that’s simply not an option,” says Grayson. Angela and Grayson remain grateful for the support they have already received from the community, including the local RSL subbranches, who will donate the profits of their upcoming ‘Country and Comedy’ charity dinner show at the Beerwah Peachester RSL Club next week to the Cadence Foundation.
They are also keen to hear from local businesses and community members who can help by donating Easter products, and other prizes, as well as help with local fundraising, volunteering to assist with fundraising efforts, or taking a donation tin. Asking the questions This week's questions have been supplied by Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) In general, the health of the environment of the Glasshouse Mountains area is under stress as a result of illegal abuse, and over use, due to a lack of appropriate and relevant infrastructure. 1. Unauthorised and/or unlicensed trail bike and 4WD activities in and around the National Parks, Nature Reserves and forestry of the Glasshouse Mountains are increasingly responsible for erosion, land degradation, environmental and safety issues through these areas. How do you think Council could be supporting state government agencies to better protect our natural areas? 2. Similarly the abovementioned areas are being used as dumps for discarded microwaves, refrigerators, asbestos, car bodies, and general household refuse. What role do you think Council should play? 3.Tourism/visitors are increasing in Glasshouse Mountains area. Large and increasing proportions of enquiries from visitors are been received about participation in walks and passive recreation pursuits around the mountains and adjoining features. Facilities catering for these activities, such as connecting trails and walking tracks, camping and picnicking areas, do not meet the demand. Do you think Council does enough in supporting eco-tourism in this area?
Steve Attrill 1. The fact is, this is majority controlled by the State Government and we have the Shadow Minister for the Environment, Andrew Powell locally involved in this issue as well. However, I believe that since we have an environmental levy, some of the funding should be put into helping fix the erosion and land degradation. We also need to designate alternate safe places for people to enjoy, not neglect it. 2. Whenever Council’s bring in tip fees, illegal dumping goes up. Council needs to address the fact it is running out of landfill sites, and we currently have to send it elsewhere. What I have proposed is to bring in two free coupons, for people to go to the tip, and kerbside collections so we can begin to arrest the problems our region has with illegal dumping. See steveattrillwill.com 3. No, what we really need to do with tourism is, resource Sunshine Coast destinations to ensure that it can deliver for the Sunshine Coast. Ecotourism is a very volatile market and trying to focus on it by itself, is not the solution to our regions tourism problems. We need to expand our tourism base to include events and business tourism, make the Convention Centre work and also ensure our ecotourism facilities are well maintained. The only way to do this is to elect a Councillor that is prepared to engage regionally and hold Council’s feet to the fire in order to get the projects required to deliver locally. www.gcnews.com.au
Ann Ross
Rhys Reynolds
1. The areas listed are not the responsibility of Council. However a unified approach from ALL levels of government is needed to combat unauthorised 4WD and trail bike abuse. The mountains are protected under both State and Federal legislation, which in turn attracts special funding which could be used to promote protection against this threat. If elected I will work hard to establish a taskforce of stakeholders to address this escalating problem which has already created vast areas of irreversible damage. 2. Local government has the primary role of providing waste and recycling services to households. In my opinion our Council has done this, but unfortunately the dumping of waste on open areas is steadily increasing. Is this due to increased charges, or is it a community reluctance to do the right thing? With the ‘new’ Glass House Mountains National Parks Management Plan currently due for release it is important that all adjunct stakeholders including Council form a taskforce to stamp out this trend. 3. NO. And if we made a comparison between that of our coastal foreshores, which abound with walks, bike paths, picnic areas and camping facilities, we would not even reach first base. State and Council infrastructure is desperately needed to equate us with eco-tourism greats such as Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain which last year accommodated 162,000 walkers. Information Centre based buses are becoming increasingly popular as well in the need to capture tourism dollars, which represent a critical segment of our economic growth.
1. I believe there needs to be a happy medium between the bikers / 4WDrivers and council / state government. Completely banning these forms of recreational sports will only damage business in the region. Many people, who enjoy this from of sport, travel from Brisbane up here to do so. I believe that majority of the area should be left alone, and a designated area be set out for these kinds of activities. I don’t believe an amicable solution could be reached if both sides completely wanted it their way. 2. There should be tougher fines for those people who illegally dump their rubbish in our forests. If people can’t afford to take their rubbish to a refuge tip, then this needs to be investigated i.e. costs of dumping waste / curb-side clean up. Getting back to the first point, harsher penalties will deter people from doing so, and I think in a bold statement, repeat offenders should be made to help clean-up the forestry that they so easily will dump their rubbish in. This will hopefully teach them a hard learned lesson. 3. Maintaining walking trails and paths can be a difficult job with the amount of rain we have been having. I believe all walking trails should be adequately signed so tourists know exactly where to go. The bigger issue is signage for the information centre. Many tourists depart the train and head along Coonowrin road looking for the centre. A simple sign could save the confusion, directing people to the right place with all relevant information.
Rick Baberowski
Bob McLean
1. Solving this will require cooperation between council, state agencies and the trail bike/4WD clubs and associations. Council should use its local knowledge and experienced open space planners to help provide suitably located, well designed and marked legal tracks with enough variety to satisfy the riders/drivers. It can encourage local clubs to self-regulate and, if necessary, help enforce consequences for those who go into national parks or sensitive environments or regularly disturb residents. 2. Firstly, council needs to develop no cost waste disposal options, either through reinstating kerbside collections, or introducing recycle credits and/or a voucher system. It can also increase the likelihood of discovery through greater monitoring of 'dump' sites in collaboration with Qld Parks, environmental groups and perhaps Neighbourhood Watch, and lead by example through higher standards in maintaining public spaces. 3. The Glasshouse Mountains area could be a world class eco-tourism destination, delivering major benefits to our region. A nearby benchmark is Noosa National Park, which attracts around one million visitors per year. Because of the Mountains' natural and cultural heritage and complex ecosystem all eco-tourism development would require close community partnerships and multilevel government collaboration. I believe council should lead and assist on more eco-tourism initiatives, in partnership with local groups. It deserves noting that GMAN constructed the impressive Jack Ferris lookout (inspiring rest point) and 5.7k Trachyte Circuit largely by themselves.
1. The vast majority of the area being referred to is leased to Forestry Plantations Queensland Pty Ltd. The use of this land for recreation comes with responsibilities; the user needs to be fully aware of the obligations in the use of this area and should visit www.fpq.net.au to be aware of the obligations. Recreation activities if promoted in the correct way, in the correct environment, have the potential to be converted into an asset creating new jobs and save lives. 2. From my ‘Listening Post’ residents have consistently been asking ‘Why can’t we bring back kerb side pickup for bulk waste?’, ‘Why can’t we have green waste vouchers?’ These savings are causing the tracks and fire trails to be used as rubbish dumps. I intend to address these if I am successful on April 28. Roads, Rates and Rubbish are still very important when ‘Encouraging a Strong Community Identity’. 3. For the past10 years I have been working on projects to encourage visitors to our unique area. These projects have been developed to promote the broad ‘Glasshouse Country’. With Sunshine Coast destinations becoming accountable for tourism for the Sunshine Coast I will continue to work to promote Glasshouse Country as a destination. As a business owner and farmer with committed environmental and sustainability values I am committed to see business flourish. I will be opening every door possible to ‘encourage, promote and assist business to grow sustainably’ Please visit my web site for more expanded responses www.bobmclean-div1.com.au FEBRUARY 22 2012 |

From the Schools
First day fears quickly forgotten The sun wasn’t shining on the first day of school, but the smiles on the faces of students and parents at Landsborough State School was all that was needed to start the year off perfectly. Of course there was the expected tears from first time mums and their nervous children, but the day went on, the tears were replaced with smiles and the most important part of their life began…. their education. Students arrived in their school uniforms adorned with the new school logo and motto ‘Your future our focus’. What an exciting year it will be! As the students gathered around their smart boards to start their lessons, it was evident that 2012 was an exciting year filled with the latest technology to support the very exciting new Australian Curriculum.
New car park for Beerwah State School Sunshine Coast Council has helped to make parking at Beerwah State School safer by contributing $200,000 to the construction of a new car park. Councillor Anna Grosskreutz officially opened the new car park at Beerwah State School last Tuesday. “Council worked closely with Beerwah State School Principal Eric Greentree and Glasshouse Country Coaches on the re-design of the car park,” Cr Grosskreutz said. “The new car park has opened just in time for the start of the school year and it means students can walk to buses without crossing in front of vehicles. “The changes to the car park, adjustments to road lanes and pathway upgrades mean that students won’t interact with traffic unnecessarily, and that was our main aim – to make it safer for students. “Completion of the work means better traffic management of bus services, drop off parking zones and general parking,” she said.

Beerwah Pool swam with noise and excitement as students from Glasshouse Country Christian College readied for battle at their annual swimming carnival. About 400 of GCCC’s 770 students dressed in house colours, donned war paint and cheered the event at the top of their lungs. War cries resounded throughout the carnival, inspiring competitors and injecting energy and points were awarded for the best team spirit. The standard of swimming reached a new level of accomplishment for GCCC with 36 new records broken. As a result, 31 primary students and 23 secondary students qualified to swim at the respective district carnivals. At the end of the day, Ararat team was the welldeserved house champions.

Community meets for project funding Following on from the success of community forums in nearby Buderim and Cooroy towns, Caloundra Community Bank® Branch will be hosting their own forum on Wednesday, February 29 at 6.00pm at the Caloundra Rugby Union Club, Arthur Street Caloundra. Branch Manager Rohan Quirey said under the Community Bank® model, their branch has the discretion to select community groups to donate their profits to. “Thanks to our customers, our local Community Bank® branch has now reached profit levels which allow us to contribute to community projects and organisations,” Mr Quirey said. This is a great opportunity for the community to contribute to the development of our town and how we can work together to create a sustainable future in our area. Projects of importance to you and your family may be similar to others in the area, and together we can explore the options that will benefit the majority. Projects may be small, large, one off or ongoing and may also be carried out in collaboration with other groups or government at any level. “We encourage everyone to bring their ideas to the table, so we can really find out what our community needs,” Mr Quirey said. The forum will start at 6.00pm at Caloundra Rugby Union Club, Arthur Street Caloundra, with finger food and light refreshments available. Community Group Updates Glasshouse Country View Club Contributed by Pauline Clarke, publicity officer
The Glasshouse Country View Club had Eileen Cooke as its speaker at the monthly meeting on Wednesday, February 15 at the Glasshouse Sports Club. Eileen looks after Parent Support for The Preterm Infants Parents Association (PIPA). PIPA is a charity which offers practical and emotional support to the families of those infants born prematurely. Approximately 8.5 per cent of all babies born in Australia each year are born preterm; this equates to around 5,000 preterm births in Queensland alone. Eileen gratefully received clothes that had been knitted for preterm babies, by members of the Club. Some of these clothes are so small that you wouldn’t believe that any baby of that size would be able to survive. The next View Club function, on Wednesday, March 7, will be a trip down the Pumistone Passaage, including a cold buffet lunch, departing Bribie Island at 11.30am. Our club is a non-profit friendship club that supports the Smith Family chiefly through the Foundation’s Learning for Life program for disadvantaged students. The Smith Family is a national, independent children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9049 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply any further information about the club. The Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club Contributed by Dr Michael Whiticker
A great night was had by the 40 or so people who attended the Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club at the Sports Club last Thursday, February 9. Amongst the performers were Greg Bryant who continues to dazzle us with his soulful interpretations of classics such as ‘Seven Spanish Angels’, made famous by Willie Nelson and Lionel Ritchie’s ‘Beautiful Lady’. Mick Od displays more confidence each time he appears on stage - on this occasion playing guitar and harmonica and backed by Doug Pullen on bass. Mick suggested to me the influence of Bryan Ferry in his vocal delivery, while Doug, who proposed his own voice was closer to the Manly Ferry, sung some Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers and an original country number with assurance and a fine stage presence. A new comer was Joelie - the grandson of Mick Shipley who accompanied Mick on guitar, and although young and according to Mick with a recently broken voice, shows that in him we could well have a very fine singer one day. Other new comers were Kita Williams and friend Nina, who along with Ian Williams gave an exquisite set including wonderful harmony rich, renditions of ‘Scarborough Fair’, ‘Time after Time’ and one of Ian’s own numbers, ‘Angel Song’. Paul Fagan and yours truly popped up as the Revelators with two short sets, one backing Gary Josland, a powerful local singer who seems to have a knack for getting the dance floor shaking, and at the end of the evening backing Greg Bryant. Greg included a soulful version of ‘People Get Ready’, which, with the occasional three part harmonies, the boys thought suggested a small taste of the Blind Boys of Alabama. The Musos Club is held on the second Thursday of the month at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, and we hope to see lots of new performers at our next session on March 8. From Peter Slipper Federal member for Fisher. Ph: 1300 301 981 or 5444 4888 During the first week of February, the National Aged Care Alliance hosted a breakfast in Canberra for Ministers and Senators to present the latest Productivity Report ‘Caring for Older Australian’s’ and its recommendations to improve care for older Australians. By attending this presentation, I felt it was especially beneficial to hear first-hand the stories of aged-care workers and families whose stories are similar to many of the residents in the Fisher electorate. Some key points: • Australia’s aged care system was designed for another era and is in desperate need of reform. • The system is very complicated and confusing and the costs are putting pressure on the quality and availability of services. • Too often older people are missing out on the support they need to help them live at home or are having to move into residential care miles from family and friends – at a time when they need them most. I’m happy to report there was unanimous agreement that there needs to be a system which is simpler, fair, affordable and equitable for all Australians, and agreed to continued conversation about these issues as a high priority for all in parliament. A few of the key Productivity Commission’s recommendations: • A hub for advice and assessment to help people to make informed choices • A fairer funding • A government backed home credit scheme Additionally a proposed Aged Care Commission would be responsible for setting pricing, taking into account the need to pay fair and competitive wages to aged care sector workers. Fairer wages would help to reduce high staff turnover rates, meet the increasing demand for a growing aged care workforce and ensure quality is maintained in all aged care services into the future. I believe we all agree every Australian deserves to age well and with dignity. Therefore I will continue my commitment to introduce a ‘Sea Change’ funding pool for the Sunshine Coast and all Sea Change communities throughout Australia which will contribute to the ongoing conversation for older Australians. As always, my door is open and I look forward to hearing from you. www.gcnews.com.au

From March 15 -17 brave Queenslanders will shave or colour their hair as part of the World’s Greatest Shave raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation and the people it helps every day. Over the next few weeks, we’ll speak to local residents who’ve been brave enough to put their hand up to participate in this year’s challenge. This week, we feature Glenview State School student Jed Carroll. Eleven-year-old Jed, who is in Year 6 at Glenview, decided to sign up for this year’s shave after a family friend lost their hair while undergoing chemotherapy last year. After seeing the campaign advertised on television, he made the brave decision to raise money to “help find a cure for all Jed Carroll will be brave and shave the sick people." Glenview School will also be getting involved, holding a hair colouring day on Friday, March 16, followed by Jed’s shave on school parade later that day. Jed set a fundraising goal of $200.00 initially which he achieved in the first week. So he increased his goal to $450.00, then $600.00. He has now raised approximately $770.00, and still has quite a few fundraising ideas up his sleeve. People can sponsor Jed through http://www.worldsgreatestshave.com or directly through his profile at http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/jedcarroll An average of five Queenslanders are diagnosed every day with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma or a related blood disorder. Stargazer Astrology - March 2012 with Chirone Witsen
Mercury retrograde and the Equinox The Full Moon falls in Virgo on Thursday, March 8, bringing into focus our need for order and purity. Virgo is a very analytical sign, and as an Earth sign it is analytical in a practical way, trying to improve situations (and even people!) in its search for perfection. The Full Moon is exact at 7.39pm Queensland time. Mercury goes retrograde on Monday, March 12 for three weeks, bringing the potential for confusion, mistakes and delays. In the first week of this retrograde period, be wary of jumping to wrong conclusions and making impulsive decisions that you later regret. This is not a good time to make any major purchases or sign contracts, unless you’re prepared to revise your plans (or take purchases back to the shop) down the track. It is however a great time to catch up on all your paperwork. Mercury is retrograde until Wednesday, April 4. The Equinox falls on Tuesday, March 20, as the Sun moves into Aries. This is the time of year when day and night are of equal length and the seasons come to a point of balance. This is a time to explore what might be out of balance in your own life and find a way to restore that balance, whether it’s in your relationships, your family life, your work or any other aspect of your life. The New Moon in Aries on Friday, March 23 is likely to bring a bold new start. With Uranus part of this line-up, this New Moon is likely to be characterised by an awakening of passion, one’s warrior spirit and a focus on the rights of the individual. The new cycle symbolised by this New Moon may come unexpectedly, as something of a shock – more positively, it comes as an invitation to access a higher level of consciousness. The New Moon is exact just after midnight (effectively Thursday night). If your birthday falls close to the date of this New Moon, this marks an important year of new beginnings in your life, particularly with regard to your identity and your sense of self. Discovering the ‘real you’ will be an important part of your journey in this coming year. And a reminder that Mars is still retrograde all through March, so be patient with any delays and setbacks to projects and other undertakings. Use this period productively by slowing down, revisiting your plans, looking for ways to revise and improve on what you were intending to do – especially as Mars is retrograde in Virgo, so pay full attention to details. Mars is retrograde until Saturday, April 14. copyright © 2012 Chirone Witsen All rights reserved Chirone is a counselling astrologer based at Mt Mellum near Landsborough. Caloundra Fringe Festival: a showcase for local talent
The Glasshouse Hinterland AFL club was fortunate enough to be able to host players from the Brisbane Lions at their home ground at Landsborough last week, and there were plenty of eager fans on hand to welcome them.
The 2012 Caloundra Music Festival is now scheduled for September 28 30 over the new Queens birthday holiday weekend and coinciding with the spring school holidays. A full list of festivities will also take place in the lead up to the main event at the inaugural Caloundra Fringe Festival. This will showcase some of the best local artistic talent to our visitors. A wide range of activities is planned for the Fringe Festival, including youth music workshops (conducted by Nicky Bomba from The John Butler Trio), theatre, street performances, circus, instrument making, lunch time concerts, indigenous art and dance. Free musical events will also feature along with art displays at festival locations. Artists and groups who were keen to perform at the Fringe Festival should register their interest as soon as possible. Visit the CMF website (www.caloundramusicfestival.com) for further details and drop the CMF team an email to start the ball rolling.

National parks
In response to Gillian Pechey's (GCNews February 8) glowing report on Labor's environmental history, I felt it necessary to set the record straight on a few points. Labor has in fact failed to properly protect our National Parks because their focus is on the politics of Green Party preferences rather than real environmental outcomes. It is a disgrace that the Auditor-General recently found only 17 per cent of Queensland's protected areas have management plans – a legal requirement under the Nature Conservation Act. So whilst Labor crows about how much land they’ve locked up for green preference deals, ask any neighbouring property owner how they’re going at managing what they’ve locked up. Our tireless Rangers do the best they can with the paltry resources they’re given but our parks are beset by weeds and pests, fire trails are not maintained and visitor facilities are allowed to deteriorate to the point where they are closed – the real agenda is they don’t want anyone to enjoy our National Parks. The LNP believe that National Parks are critical for the conservation of Queensland's natural heritage, for stronger communities and for tourism. The LNP understands that it is vital that our National Parks are protected for the future, better managed and are good neighbours for adjoining property owners. The LNP will both conserve our National Parks for future generations and improve access for all - but any suggestion this means trail bikes in National Parks is a blatant Labor lie. The LNP will correct the current imbalance to ensure Queensland's natural heritage is truly protected, accessible and appreciated. Andrew Powell MP Member for Glass House Shadow Minister for the Environment

Enjoy your foothpath
Further to Dell Winkler’s comments (GCNews February 15) regarding the path to Australia Zoo, this little snippet regarding the path to Australia Zoo raised many annoyed eyebrows. We are loathe to pay our rates as our bi-annual notice arrives and yet again we ask; what are this year’s exorbitant fees going to pay for? They’re certainly not going to be spent here. The past eight years have seen the western end of Glenview Road, Glenview crumble and perish under the tyres of trucks, cars and motorcycles. Each six months we faithfully pay our rates blindly trusting yet again, our goat track, which remains inundated with pot holes and its lifting, collapsing, quick fix repairs will be given a new solid surface. The council's surveyors painted pretty pink, orange and blue marks and numbers on our road about four years ago. They, like the surveyors faded into oblivion and were never seen or heard of again. Enjoy your new footpath, Australia Zoo, because we've never seen one of those either! Steve and Judy Dick Glenview

Voting options
With the local government election date now set for April 28, Sunshine Coast residents will have the opportunity to vote for a candidate of their choice to represent their division. It is interesting to note that, of the 73 local government authorities throughout Queensland, 50 have adopted the ‘first past the post’ system of voting which ensures that, at the end of the day, the person with the majority of votes wins the right to represent you in council. Here on the Sunshine Coast we continue to allow ‘optional preferential voting’ which provides the voter with the choice of voting 1 outright or, if they choose, in order of preference from 1 to 3 and so on. Most people I have spoken to prefer first past the post, but some have a strong argument for the preferential system. For this reason I have begun a survey poll on my Facebook page, ‘Ann Ross Candidate for SCC Division 1’ to gauge your preference. I would also be very interested to learn GCNews readers’ views on this controversial topic. For alternative contact details refer to my advertisement on page 6. Ann Ross Sunshine Coast Division 1 Candidate
I've been everywhere!
In reply to Dell Winkler of Landsborough (GCNews February 8), 'Where have you been'? Let me start by agreeing, in part, with Ms Winkler that sometimes words are not enough. This is why I welcome Ms Winkler's letter as an opportunity to indicate the work I have been
undertaking, energetically and proudly in serving the beautiful hinterland communities in Division 5. I continue to regularly visit Landsborough, meeting with community members regarding local concerns, residents and sporting groups including members of the Landsborough Sports Reserve and, on invitation, Morris House and the wonderful Museum. I also have a close rapport with local businesses and the Queensland Police Service. My contacts are available for the public record and my office receives and deals with all matters; as we have done across the large and diverse region of Division 5. This is of course balanced with the needs of other communities. I am passionate about my job and will continue to deliver for all communities in my Division in an energetic, informed, experienced, fair and equitable manner. I look forward to your support at the next election so that I can continue as the voice of the hinterland in the interests of People, Place and Prosperity. Kerbside clean up the answer?
Will reinstating a free 'Kerbside clean-up' solve the problem of dumping waste and discarded appliances in our parks and natural areas? At councils first community focus group meeting for the $3.2m Beerwah Place + project, the problem of dumping was passionately reported as a major issue. The issue is not as straight forward as it seems but here's some more detail to help us quickly deal with this maddening and costly trend. Firstly, the 'Kerbside clean-up' program was not free; it cost council just under a million dollars to contract the waste collectors for the last program. Secondly, for practical efficiency the kerbside material is crushed and goes into landfill, it's not recycled and nothing of value is recovered or resold, (other than what is rummaged). Thirdly, it means the recycling centres experience a drop in business for about three months. This reduces their revenues and their core purpose of reducing waste into landfills. And forthly, kerbside material is seen as a liability and safety issue; who's responsible if a rummaging passerby gets hurt or a householder fails to take doors off fridges etc? So what's the solution? Paying fees at the recycling centres can be a genuine affordability issue so let’s develop a dignified low or no cost option. The simplest is two or three free weekends a year. It doesn't solve the problem for everyone, particularly some elderly, but staff at the recycling stations often help wherever they can. Personally, I'd like to know what people think of the idea of combining the free periods with two vouchers per year for ratepayers. That way everyone's covered; renters and owners. Nothings perfect but the current system clearly isn't working so let’s change it to make it fairer and improve the incentives to recover, recycle and reuse! Lawn adds $75,668 to the value of a home Aussie home buyers are prepared to pay up to $75,668 more for a lawn, according to a national survey of residential real estate agents.* The survey, conducted by Turf Australia, found Victorian lawns offer the highest value (19 per cent) to a home, ahead of New South Wales (16 per cent), Queensland and South Australia (12 per cent, respectively), and Western Australia (9 per cent). A third of real estate agents say buyers believe a lawn adds to the look and feel of a home, while 73 per cent say buyers want a safe playing area for their children. But it’s not only families who want a lawn, according to real estate agents; young couples and upsizers also believe in the benefits of grass, and a majority (80 per cent) of their buyers want a backyard to be at least 30 per cent of their total property size.
Janusz Hooker, Chief Executive of LJ Hooker, says house hunters factor in specific requirements such as a lawn or a backyard as part of their criteria and budget. “Australians have changed their ideals for a backyard but a townhouse or larger suburban home with an area of grass is still important in 2012,” says Mr Hooker. While agents believe 25 per cent of buyers are savvy about the long term benefits of a lawn, those selling need to also recognise the potential resale value of a lawn. “For sellers, the key is to put some time into making the lawn look well-cared for and perfect for the new owners – that’s how they’ll capitalise on the added value a lawn can offer,” says Mr Hooker.

need for lenders' mortgage insurance," she said. "Financing a co-ownership agreement is not all that different to traditional borrowing. Lenders will still look at the income, expenses, assets and liabilities of each borrower and expect regular lending criteria to be met such as good savings habits, steady employment history, clean credit record, etc. "In a co-ownership agreement the share of ownership can be split; that is rather than all parties owning all of the property together, they may own a percentage depending on their financial contribution. They may also be able to sell or transfer their share without having to sell the whole property," said Ms Williamson. "Another advantage is lenders will allow the co-ownership loan to be structured in a way that allows each party to make a separate repayment to cover their share. However, most lenders will require all borrowers to be responsible for the entire debt. This means if one party is unable to contribute to the loan repayments on their share, the remaining party or parties will be expected to make up the difference. "That is why, as with any major financial transaction, it is important to seek independent legal and financial advice prior to signing a co-ownership contract. All parties must fully understand their rights and obligations under the co-ownership agreement," she said.

Australians who have a love for property and a desire to enter the market sooner may benefit from partnering up with another to purchase, according to Australia's largest independently operated mortgage broker, Mortgage Choice. Bucking the trend of traditional shared ownership, de-facto couples, friends, relatives and work colleagues are joining financial forces to buy their first property in co-ownership with one another. Mortgage Choice spokesperson Belinda Williamson said buying property with someone you trust in a co-ownership agreement can help ease the challenge of applying for, and repaying a home loan. It may also enable first timers to enter the market sooner and to take advantage of low interest rates and a wide range of competitive home loan deals. "According to our latest first homebuyer research, 66 per cent of first time buyers planning to purchase property before March 2013 will not be buying on their own*. "Sharing a home loan commitment with one or more people provides borrowers with the opportunity to split the cost of the property and the associated expenses, so that loan repayments are noticeably less than what they would be if they were buying solo. Another benefit is if the combined funds equate to a deposit of 20 per cent or more of the purchase price, it will negate the

The gift of flight The miracle of aviation. Just over 100 years ago men were attempting any means possible to understand the laws of aerodynamics. In the late 1890's the legendary Australian, Lawrence Hargraves had discovered the power of lift with a curved wing via his experiments with box kites off the wind-blown hills of Stanwell Park, south of Sydney. He generously shared his theories with French and American inventors and aviators. By 1904 the Wright Brothers defied gravity and the world was never to be the same. Within a decade, men were causing death and destruction with the use of aviation. Machine guns fixed to fire bullets between the revolving propellers of timber framed Bi-planes,
exploding bombs dropped over enemy lines onto innocent people. The world was at war. The miracle of flight became a blessing and a curse upon humanity. Just like your life and mine. We can live it for good or for evil. We all have the potential in life to cause pain or bring joy, to destroy life or to bring healing. Jesus said ‘I have come to give life and give it abundantly’. As our lives take on the nature of God, love rules and brings joy and healing to those around us.

STILL GROWING

Down & Dirty with Brownie When good plants turn bad Last week one of our workers here at the paper had a distressing incident which is a timely reminder for everyone to take notice of what is growing in the garden. Two of her beloved pets died from eating a commonly grown garden plant commonly called Rhoeo or ‘Moses in the Cradle’. This took me by surprise as, although I did know it was a skin irritant for dogs (it’s in the same family of plants as Wandering Jew), I didn’t realise that the plant could be fatal if eaten. She then dug out all the Rhoeo plants in her garden so that the other pets didn’t meet the same fate.

In the process, she got some of the plant sap onto a graze on her arm, with the result that she was rather sick the next day. Another reminder to wear gloves and long sleeves if possible when dealing with garden plants, as you never know what health-related reaction they may provoke. There a lot of common garden plants that we all know to be poisonous to pets and people. Oleander, Foxglove, Angels’ Trumpet, Rhubarb leaves and white cedar berries just to name a few. But did you know that Agapanthus can cause nausea, vomiting and mouth ulcers? The berries of Duranta (Golden Dewdrop, Sheena’s Gold or Geisha Girl) which look like little orange lollies, can be fatal if swallowed and have killed pets. Caladium leaves can burn the mouth and gastrotract if eaten and the sap is a severe skin irritant. Dieffenbachia (or Dumb Cane) can make the tongue, mouth and throat swell, making it difficult to breathe or talk – lasting several days. Gloriosa Lily seeds can (and have) caused a painful death. Hydrangea leaves and flowers can cause vomiting and dermatitis. Eating Wisteria can lead to severe abdominal pain followed by collapse. Contact with Primula plants can cause burning, redness, itching and swelling to the skin, face and eyes. Brunfelsia (Yesterday Today Tomorrow) has been known to kill dogs that have eaten the leaves. Cycad fruit is deadly and will kill even large stock animals if eaten. Daffodil and Tulip bulbs are poisonous if chewed and can be fatal.
Yellow oleander
White cedar
Duranta
Periwinkle (pink or white) may cause headaches, vomiting and nerve damage. Peruvian lily (or Alstroemeria) can trigger skin allergies and bring on vomiting and diarrhoea. Yellow Oleander or Cook Tree is deadly and has been the cause of the death of several children. And the list goes on … The moral of the story is that if you have small children, pets (particularly puppies) or grazing animals, you really need to do an audit of your garden to see if there is anything which may be a health hazard to them. There are some good resources you can use. The Queensland Department of Health have a booklet which can be found on their website (www. health.qld.gov.au/poisonsinformationcentre). There is also a good book called ‘Poisonous 2 Pets’ which has over 300 pages of information on plants poisonous to dogs and cats (www.publish. csiro.au/pid/6706.htm). If you’re still not sure, take a piece into one of our friendly local garden centres and ask them what they think. Or contact a professional weed consultant who can give you peace of mind by looking over your backyard for you. But be careful when handling any potentially poisonous plant. Make sure you wear gloves and cover any cuts or wounds. www.gcnews.com.au

Barramundi closure lifted in Gulf and along east coast

The barramundi season has opened for fishers from the Gulf of Carpentaria and along Queensland’s east coast. Fisheries Queensland recreational fishing manager Tony Ham said a recent change to the annual barramundi closure in the Gulf ensured the same closure period each year. “In the past, annual closures for barramundi have aligned only with moon phases when fish spawn but the change makes it easier for recreational fishers to remember a single date,” he said. Fishers are reminded that size limits for barramundi apply, where only fish between a minimum of 58cm and a maximum of 120cm can be taken. A ‘bag’ or ‘possession’ limit of five per person also applies. The closure period throughout the east coast is from 12.00noon November 1 to 12.00noon February 1. Catch the latest fishing rules at www.fisheries. qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23. Latest fisheries information is also available via Twitter – www.twitter.com/fisheriesQLD or find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ FisheriesQueensland FEBRUARY 22 2012 |

This is the story of the blonde flying in a twoseater airplane with just the pilot. He has a heart attack and dies. She frantically calls a May Day: "May Day! May Day! Help me! Help me! My pilot had a heart attack and is dead and I don't know how to fly. Help me! Please help me!" All of a sudden she hears a voice over the radio saying: "This is the tower. I have received your
message and I will talk you through it. I've had a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Now, just relax. Everything will be fine! Now give me your height and position." She says, "I'm 5'4" and I'm in the front seat." "Ok," says the voice from the tower. "Repeat after me: Our Father. . . Who art in Heaven. . . .." Helen Eddie, Peachester
