W

ith so much media coverage recently around bush fires, we thought it was about time we draw attention to the great work that is done by so many of our local volunteer fire fighters. So we put a couple of our many, many dedicated firies on the front cover: Maleny and District Rural Fire Brigade Officers, Nick Grech and Daniel Sandeman. Daniel is the brigade's First Officer, a volunteer role, as well as being an employee of Queensland Fire Service, and he is the co-ordinator across the eight local rural fire units. This week GC&M News caught up with Daniel to find out a little more about the Rural Fire Service, and one of the consistent messages is that across the whole area there is an ongoing need for additional volunteers. When it is really busy this allows for a sharing out of the work that the firies get involved in, and one of the other important messages he wanted to share was that they have plenty of jobs for people who want to get involved but who don’t necessarily have the capacity to do the fire-fighting duties. Check out the story on page 5 and maybe give some thought to getting involved yourself? Regards,

25 Saturday

Local News ‘No body, no parole’ to become law in Queensland The Palaszczuk Government will introduce ‘no body no parole’ legislation to help victims’ families and provide an incentive for offenders to cooperate with authorities.

The laws would apply to offenders convicted of murder or manslaughter. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Sofronoff review recommended a model similar to South Australia, which focused broadly on prisoners cooperating with investigations. “We have accepted the recommendation to introduce legislation this year to empower the Parole Board to not release the prisoner on parole if the prisoner hasn’t cooperated in the investigation,” she said. “We agree with the findings of the Sofronoff review that ‘withholding the location of a body extends the suffering of victims’ families and all efforts should be made to attempt to minimise this sorrow’,” the Premier said. Mr Sofronoff met with Fiona Splitt and discussed the hardship that she has faced because she was unable to put her husband to rest. Her husband Bruce Schuler went missing in July 2012 at Palmerville Station on Cape York.

The station’s leaseholders Stephen Struber and Dianne Wilson were convicted of his murder. Mr Schuler’s body has not been found. The Sofronoff review found: “The ‘no body, no parole’ legislation is designed to help victims’ families and to provide a strong incentive for offenders to cooperate with authorities. A system similar to South Australia’s, which focuses more broadly on cooperation with the investigation, has the potential to provide more benefit to the community in incentivising cooperation of all kinds.” Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said she would be introducing ‘no body, no parole’ legislation later this year. “We know there are a number of jurisdictions across Australia which have legislation, or are in the process of introducing similar legislation. “We will consult with stakeholders on the drafting of the legislation.”

After travelling to Brisbane and speaking to a couple of places about updating our kitchen, we ended up speaking to Kev. We found him so personable and his prices so reasonable, that we booked him straight away. The process was all very stress free and he was so helpful and flexible with our design. He was able to coordinate all the trades to come on the same day, and they were all as courteous and lovely as him. We used to hate our useless corner cupboards, but we love them now, they are so functional. We would recommend Kev to anyone.

Beerwah teachers learn 'whey' to make cheese Teachers from Beerwah State High School recently learnt the secrets behind making ‘un-brie-lievable’ blue cheese, during the RNA Teachers’ Cheese Making Workshops at the Brisbane Showgrounds. Amber Wilson and Lynn Thomas were among 44 teachers from 25 schools who swapped their chalk for cheese and became the students this week, learning the science behind cheese making from dairy expert and Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show judge Russell Smith. The internationally-awarded cheese making workshops are now in their eighth year and included a mix of theory and hands-on practical work in both blue and white mould cheeses. Once back in the classroom, the teachers will pass on their new-found knowledge to their students, who will then enter their finest fromages into the Royal Queensland Show’s (Ekka) Student Made Cheese Competition in June. Russell Smith said while making cheese is great fun, the students will also learn a great deal. “The process helps students understand where their food comes from – it doesn’t just magically appear on the supermarket shelf,” he said. “It also shows students a possible career pathway by following a food science direction and ultimately a dairy food science qualification. Thought about becoming a rural firie? By Sonia Clark With record dry and hot weather conditions making the headlines, combined with recent outbreaks of major fire activity around the Sunshine Coast – now is an ideal time to think about getting involved in the vital service of our local rural fire brigades. Maleny First Officer and Group Officer for the Caloundra area Daniel Sandeman said, “This has been one of our busier fire seasons and what we have been finding is that in 90% of incidents it is the same people being called out – many have families and work commitments as well. “The more people we have, the more we can keep rotating our crews and maintain our shifts,” he said. When you think about firies you might think that you need to be big, strong and fit, however not all the work that volunteers undertake is as physically demanding as you might think. Volunteers can choose operational or non operational roles; from being an active fire

fighter through to support officers, equipment and maintenance roles and volunteer community educator roles. Most local brigades meet for a couple of hours a month – though Daniel explained that with the prevalence of the current conditions Maleny are currently meeting every fortnight (on a Tuesday from 7.00pm - 9.00pm). All training and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided for free and volunteers can obtain nationally recognised qualifications. Volunteer roles can suit a wide variety of people with different skills and backgrounds. Non-operational roles include support officer positions such as brigade fundraising or organising food supplies to ground crews, and Volunteer Community Educators who can assist communities and homeowners with fire education and the preparation of bush fire survival plans.

I always like to say that volunteers don’t have the time but they always have the heart!

The Maleny Uniting Church Garage Sale on Saturday, March 11 is set to be the premium event for the first quarter of the year. With everything from hairclips to larger pieces of furniture and rare books, there really is something for everyone. This year we are adding a ‘Super Sausage Sizzle’ with drinks so there is no excuse to go home for lunch. We are encouraging everyone to bring big bags for bigger bargains. There will be a 50 cent lucky dip for the children and lots of ‘man things’ to keep husbands happy. So collect your friends and come and check it out. Be there at 7.00am for the red hot bargains. If you have items you would like to donate, please ring 0429 647 370 or 5494 3693. Collection of larger pieces will be the Thursday or Friday before. All the funds raised this year will be going to help the Uniting Church Outback Frontier Services, based in Cunnamulla in south west Queensland. This patrol, led by Rev Sunil Kadaparambil and Mrs Eva Kadaparambil, helps and supports our Australian farmers and others living in this remote area. Based in Cunnamulla, this combined patrol is

approximately 450,000 square kilometres. The northern boundary includes the township of Tambo and follows a westerly line that moves below Blackall and includes the township of Bedourie. It follows the Queensland/Northern Territory border south, touching the borders of South Australia and New South Wales. The patrol area is mostly arid pastoral country and in some areas harsh conditions are routinely experienced. In recent years there has been significant coal exploration. For some people living in the area, there is a sense of loneliness and isolation from community and government services. Many pastoralists struggle with financial difficulties associated with fluctuating commodity prices, government regulations, drought and flood. The patrol minister is also involved in Police chaplaincy in this area and the ministry is well supported because people here receive practical, moral and spiritual support, especially in the midst of drought and financial crisis. Later in the year, in July/ August, a team of workers from the Maleny Uniting Church will spend some time in Cunnamulla “lending a hand where needed”. If you would like to donate to Frontier Services or would like more information, please contact Linda Robinson on 0419 652 047.

New hospital service helps local kids grow A new inpatient children’s clinic at Caboolture Hospital is proving to be a godsend for new mums like Glasshouse Mountain’s Sarah Moffat whose baby experienced feeding difficulties. Sarah, a first-time mum, gave birth to son Chevy 10 weeks early. She has welcomed the guidance and support she received from the Paediatric Feeding and Swallowing Service to help her son feed properly and consistently gain weight. “The service was important to me as I learnt a lot; it made a big difference and without it I would have been lost,” Sarah said. “Chevy has become a really good feeder now, he has maintained his weight and I am no longer worried that he will go backwards.” Executive Director Dr Lance Le Ray said it was important for the hospital to continue to introduce services that would make a significant difference, especially to our young patients and their families. “As demand grows, so has the need to enhance our children’s inpatient services to better identify and support newborns and kids who are

experiencing feeding and swallowing difficulty (dysphagia),” Dr Le Ray said. As part of the new Paediatric Feeding and Swallowing Service, a team of allied health professionals have been assembled to identify and assess newborns, infants and young children at risk of dysphagia and clinical malnutrition at the hospital. Director of Speech Pathology and Audiology Brooke Cowie said hospital patients were supported through education, early intervention plans, treatment and support. Dr Le Ray said Caboolture Hospital patients requiring outpatient appointments for dysphagia or malnutrition previously would have had to travel to North Lakes Health Precinct, Nambour Hospital or Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. “It is very important to offer paediatric services closer to home to all our patients. It is anticipated that the Paediatric Feeding and Swallowing Service will benefit around 200 local inpatients of the hospital each year,” Dr Le Ray said.

Beerwah aged care expansion Glasshouse Views Residential care facility is planning to expand, with a development application recently lodged with Sunshine Coast Council. Facility owners, McKenzie Aged Care Pty Ltd, hope to build a new 19 bed wing and additional staff facilities within a second storey pod above the existing kitchen. The Peachester Road aged care establishment currently provides 99 aged care beds, with the proposal increasing that to 118. An additional parking area accommodating 10 parking spaces is also proposed to the north of the proposed new wing. According to the development application planning report, the new wing has a total floor area of 932 square metres. The proposed bedrooms have an area of approximately 22-25 square metres including an ensuite, and all open onto the central hallway to give access to common services and facilities. The wing also includes common sitting, lounge and dining areas for use by residents. More information on the proposal can be found by accessing www.pdonline. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and searching for ‘MCU17/0016’.

Cream rises Maleny Commerce has started 2017 with their AGM held at House of Laurels. The new committee members are: Spencer Shaw (president), Nicole Hilton (vice-president), Jenn Bucher (treasurer), Karen Shaw (secretary) and Lea Parkes, Alan Marchant and Deborah Hammond (committee members). Not too much has changed, except Nicole Hilton from MCU taking the step up from committee member to vice president, and Alan Marchant, also from MCU, joining the committee. One of the other big business highlights in February was for Chamber Member, Maleny Dairies, at the 2017 Australian Grand Dairy Awards on February 9. They were named the ultimate champion in the milk category for their Maleny Dairies' Farmers Choice Full Cream Milk. Top work to Ross and Sally Hopper for this outstanding achievement.

Arts Council Committee ready to roll Following a well-attended AGM recently, Maleny Art Council’s new committee has met with great enthusiasm for this year’s program, and is looking forward to the first show, ‘Eleanor’s Story, an American girl in Hitler’s Germany’. Former president Jennifer Radbourne and treasurer John Marsden have both been re-elected to the same positions. With the resignation of secretary June Dunn, Wendy Harper has taken on the job of acting secretary. Others re-elected are Peter Lavery whose responsibility is the sourcing of suitable shows for Maleny, Judith Ross-Smith, PR and newsletters, and Jane Todd. The committee for 2017 includes new member Margaret Taylor, director of Maleny Singers, and President Jennifer welcomed her on to the committee. “We are delighted to have Margaret on our committee with her wealth of experience in the performing arts, and as director of the Maleny Singers,” she said. “It is especially significant in that we will be able to work more closely with another arts organisation in Maleny.” Program coordinator Peter Lavery said the first production would be suitable for the general theatre public as well as for students in upper level secondary school. ‘Eleanor’s Story’ was the adaptation of Eleanor Ramrath Garner’s autobiography by her granddaughter Ingrid Garner who grew up hearing her grandmother’s stories. “Any students of history would be fascinated by this story and to be able after the performance to

Helping out in hospitality

Life can be tough and there are not many families who go through it without any difficulties or troubles at some point in time. That is why a group of caring and enthusiastic parents at Glasshouse Christian College came together one Wednesday morning to help with hospitality. Eleven women and one (outnumbered) man took over GCC’s Hospitality kitchen on Wednesday to cook up a storm. It wasn’t long before tantalizing aromas of delicious food wafted over the campus. Mrs Julie Peters, GCC’s Head of Hospitality, was more than happy to have her kitchen taken over. “It was like having a classroom of students but they didn’t need to ask any questions,” she said. “The volunteers demonstrated excellent culinary skills and a lot of needy families will be blessed by their thoughtfulness and hard work,” Mrs Peters added.

Ashley goes to war with robot

In the last week of term four last year we were notified that Ashley McIntyre, now in Year 9 at Beerwah High, was selected to attend the ‘digIT’ Camp in Sydney over the school holidays. This wonderful opportunity came about as a result of her excellent results in the Australian Mathematics Trust maths competitions. Ashleigh spent five days at Macquarie University participating in many Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths activities, with a focus on Information and Communications Technology. Some of her highlights included ‘wars’ in which the she used Sphero Robots to try to knock the other opponents out of an arena, designing her own webpage, and visiting Google. She made lots of good friends and has a group project she will be working on via Skype to present at the next camp in July. Well done, Ashley.

Children love a trip to the library

Beerwah Librarian Karen Ferguson reads to the children At Glasshouse Early Education Centre they like to focus on all aspects of education and experiences for our children. With technology becoming a huge part of everyday life, and with this in mind, the team feel it is still so important to enjoy the simple pleasures that we all as children enjoyed, including reading with our friends and families. So last week the children went on an excursion to the Beerwah Library for story time, which they loved. The excursions are organised for their school readiness children on a regular basis all year round. Who knows where we will pop up next?

Introducing Jess Barker Jess has been with Glass House Early Education Centre for the last four years and has her diploma in early childhood education. She brings a wealth of experience to her role as an early childhood educator and enjoys working in a supportive and nurturing environment. In an industry that often has a high turnaround of staff, educator Jess clearly loves her job as she has been with Queensland Child Care Services for 12 years. “I love coming to work! Every day is different here at the Centre and the children are just lovely. The children are so happy and interested in learning and playing – they always brighten up your day,” says Jess. The rewards that come with working with young children are appreciated by all the staff at the centre, as well as the bond and friendship developed with the parents. Another thing that Jess loves about working at Glass House Early

Educator Jess and Tanner

www.gcnews.com.au

Education Centre is the strong sense of support and cooperation between all the staff, which makes coming to work feel like “being around family”. Jess followed her ambition to work in childcare straight after finishing school – she loves the happy environment and teaching and interacting with the children. “It’s wonderful to help prepare our children for the future. It is an honour to be involved with their learning journey and I love that the children still remember us when we see them at school and out in the community.”

Centre News According to Centre Coordinator Ange Hardey, the focus for 2017 is all about providing a more sustainable service and strengthening bonds with the local community. The Centre is committed to minimising its carbon footprint and has already instigated a number of initiatives to become ‘greener’ and more sustainable. Some of the initiatives include the installation of solar panels, a move towards using less plastic toys and products at the centre, and a monthly ‘green day’ to help promote environmental awareness and sustainability. Children are invited to wear green to help promote the day and this month the centre are asking for a small donation to help the children adopt an animal from Australia Zoo. “It is vitally important that we adopt sustainable practices now so that we can help look after

Miss Silvia on Green Day our future generations. We feel strongly about the environment and are committed to sharing a sustainable future,” explains Ange. The other key focus for this year is the commitment to further supporting local community organisations. Being an active part of the local community is important and the children are encouraged to participate in activities that strengthen that bond. Visits to local aged care facilities and excursions to the local community library are part of this focus. The centre is also keen to support local charities and get behind local organisations and community groups.

Hungry injured and orphaned koalas need your help. Another plantation of koala food trees is being created in Beerwah and the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) is looking for willing helpers to lend a hand to do some mulching and seedling planting. The current plantation in Glass House Mountains has been hugely successful, with the saplings providing plentiful amounts of fresh juicy gum leaves. However, with this current location being on private lands, the future supply of koala food needs to be secured so that koala carers and the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital can Drogo the Koala continue to easily access an adequate supply into the future. Sunshine Coast Council has come to the party and identified some unallocated parkland off Pinelands Drive in Beerwah where the 500 eucalypts can be grown and easily accessed whenever the need arises. The Project Coordinator from GMAN, Cliff Schnick, is thrilled by the support they have received from Council to identify and establish the plantation in Pinelands Park on Kurrajong Court (off Pinelands Drive) at Beerwah. “GMAN in cooperation with Sunshine Coast Council staff have begun to prepare the site,” Cliff explains. “Two working bees have been planned to complete the work that needs to be done. A call is being made for volunteers from the community for help with tidying up the mulch in rows and planting about 500 eucalypt seedlings.” The working bees will be on Saturday, March 4, Saturday, March 11 and, if required, Sunday, March 12. Anyone interested in helping for a few hours or a day or more is asked to register by calling Cliff on 5438 7118 or 0438 721 792.

My story counselling

New research today is revealing that depression, anxiety and hopelessness are on the increase, almost coming in epidemic proportions. Findings from new research commissioned by Movember reveal that a devastating number of men feel friendless, with 51% of men having two or less close friends. The study also shows that married men have some of the lowest levels of support outside the home.* Maggie Hamilton, researcher and author of ‘What’s happening to our little girls?’ and ‘What’s happening to our little boys?’, discovered that children today are suffering from anxiety at earlier ages than previous generations. This anxiety is often around appearance and having the ‘right’ gear. Good mental health is a consequence of how we make sense of and understand the world, primarily our social world. And this is “largely determined by our experiences and upbringing. Mental health services should be designed to that end. We should simply drop the language of ‘disorder’ and think about we can help people fulfil their potential and maximise their personal well-being.”**. It is being able to make sense of our experiences, what’s happening in the world around us, that is the purpose of counselling and so-called ‘talk-therapy’. We offer a confidential, non-judgmental space to work through our own ways of making meaning of life circumstances.

Do you know about the risks of digital eye strain and the dangers of blue light? We live in exciting times with an ever increasing access to a world of technology never before experienced. Everyday our reliance on ‘smart’ devices grows and smart phones, tablets, computers and TVs and even smart watches have become an indispensible part of all aspects of our lives from work, to learning, socialising and play. But all that screen time can be hard on our eyes, and research is flagging the growing concern with digital eye strain and the negative effects of blueviolet light. Optometrists are seeing a significant increase in patients presenting with symptoms of sore, tired, gritty eyes, headaches and intermittent blurred vision after prolonged digital device use. Our eyes were never meant to look at millions of glowing pixels all day.

On the bright side, there’s no need to immediately unplug your devices and live a digital free life. Specially developed lenses and lens coatings can provide preventative measures to relax and protect your eyes from digital devices and minimise exposure to potentially harmful blue-violet light. These specially designed lenses have been made for everyone who spends time looking at digital screens, whether that’s for work or leisure. Research suggests that one in three adults spend over nine hours a day on digital devices and an average adult will look at their mobile device over 100 times per day. It has also shown that one in four children spend more than three hours per day on digital devices.

Only two hours in front of digital screens is enough to cause eye strain. Tired or irritated eyes, blurred vision, headaches or even neck and shoulder pain after using digital devices can be symptoms of digital eye strain. Another consideration for both eye and general health is the increasing abundance of potentially harmful blue light from natural and manmade sources. Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum. It comes from the sun, as well as artificial light sources like digital screens and fluorescent lights. This type of light gets absorbed deep in the eye, making it one of the most intense forms of visible light to humans. Blue-violet light penetrates the eye and potentially affects the health of the retina. It has been implicated in the development of macular degeneration.

Blue light may be beneficial to our eyes in moderation as it is necessary for regulation of the sleep/wake cycles, mood and cognitive performances, however it can also contribute to premature eye ageing. ‘EyeZen’ lenses have been developed to protect your eyes in numerous ways – each lens contains three technologies in one and can assist with sharper clearer vision, more comfortable relaxed vision and protection from blue light. The lens contains a blue-violet filter that blocks at least 20% of harmful blue light. As the sun sets and the light changes from blue to yellower tones, the pineal gland (in the brain) lets down melatonin (the sleep hormone) which helps us get to sleep at night. EyeZen lenses block the specific wavelengths of light from digital devices that stop the let down of melatonin allowing the wearer to get to sleep. h2 Vision Centres also offer Crizal Prevencia

coating on single vision and multifocal lenses. This coating selectively filters out UV rays and blue-violet light while allowing other wavelengths of blue through. As well as protecting the eyes, it has also been found to improve comfort and reduced eyestrain when using computers and electronic devices.

A/Professor Hartley, a local medical practitioner and optometrist with extensive experience in accommodation-vergence (focusing and eye coordination) problems says that these lenses have been a game changer. "We have been requesting a lens such as the EyeZen, with blue-blocking technology and stress relieving features, from lens manufacturers for some time. Especially since the rise of digitaldevice use has increasingly afflicted our patients,” he said. “It's great to finally have such a lens. Our patients report tremendous benefit and some have even stated that they have increased their productivity. Certainly, the lens works as it has been designed, relieving eye symptoms associated with digital device use."

Beerwah Picture Framing celebrate first year of business Since opening their doors a year ago, Beerwah Picture Framing has exceeded expectations. Offering ‘quality framing by appointment’, the last twelve months has seen local customers gain great satisfaction from having a diversity of treasured items framed and restored. Owned by Seb Messina, Beerwah Picture Framing draws upon Seb’s extensive commercial photography background and previous experience owning a successful framing business in Brisbane. Seb loves meeting people and his ‘tree change’ business providers the perfect outlet for his professional and social skills. “Life in Beerwah is great … I get to do what I love while being able to look out of the front window of my framing studio and take in the view of beautiful Crookneck and Mt Beerwah in one glance,” says Seb. In its first year, Beerwah Picture Framing has done a lot of traditional custom picture framing jobs featuring various styles, shapes and sizes. Seb thinks that the most important skill in framing is the ability to select mats and frames in colours and textures that really make the art pop. He is fortunate that he has the artistic eye, which he combines with well honed skills learned as a photographer to assist his customers to make great framing choices that will enhance the presentation of their art. Framing treasured memorabilia has been very significant to Seb and he applies a lot of thought to the process. He loves that he can frame a beautiful knitted garment, a jersey, or medals

that will be admired in someone’s home for many years to come. He has framed all manner of objects including knives, scabbards and even an axe. An important point that Seb makes is that when framing valuable pieces he always suggests using an appropriate level of conservation materials to both visually enhance and preserve the item. Seb also enjoys helping his customers get the best from their canvas pieces. Styles go from modern art deco wrap effects to classic gold and silver frames. During 2016 Seb and his wife Mary took a few weeks to do a road trip through central Australia and returned with some unique Aboriginal canvas art which can be purchased and framed to customers taste and budget. Customers appreciate the fact that Beerwah Picture Framing is a one stop studio and shop offering many complementary framing and printing services in house. Operating on a ‘by appointment basis’, Seb greatly appreciates that customers understand the need to phone and make an appointment before visiting the studio. He would hate to disappoint by being away or in consultation with another customer. Seb is always happy to arrange a time that suits. Beerwah Picture Framing is powering into its second year with plans for product expansion and even more services. So, for all your framing needs, call Seb at Beerwah Picture Framing to make an appointment to visit.

Seb is happy that his photo restoration services are eagerly sought after, with his reproduction work and photo enlargement printing services also very popular. Using his quality scanner or high resolution camera and studio lighting equipment, he is able to capture virtually any art, from postage-stamp size to wall size, then print it on appropriate media on his wide format printer.

School News Welcome afternoon tea

As a small school in a small community it’s always exciting to welcome new families into our school, knowing that we will inevitably get to know them all on a daily basis for possibly the next six or more years and maybe even a lifetime. Our Tuesday Stephanie Alexander Kitchen/Garden class made sure that we got these friendships off to a friendly start with a wonderful presentation of afternoon tea that the children made themselves under the wonderful guidance of Mrs Thorne and our kitchen helpers. Welcome to all our new families and welcome back to all our helpers.

Guide Tips for couples on their wedding day Peachester local and marriage celebrant for the past 10 years Margarita Priori-Smith has plenty of great words of wisdom to share with couples before their special day. “Most importantly, don't get hung up on the little things that may not go completely to plan,” she says. “Let it go, enjoy each moment, breathe deeply, laugh often and get it all on film; whether it be a professional photographer and/or professional videographer. “We didn't have a professional photographer when we were married, and it is the one regret I had of the day. “Therefore, when we renewed our vows in June 2016, in a 'We Still Do' Ceremony, we ensured we had the best professional photographer and videographer capture our special day. “My favourite part was seeing my son’s face as he walked me towards his Dad, like he had when he was 9. That’s something I couldn't possibly have seen for myself any other way. “And for that reason it was a favourite moment of mine, when looking at the video, it brings a smile to my face every time. So for me, a video was an absolute must. “The other thing, of course, is your Celebrant, whether you want all the bells and whistles or just a quick elopement, just for the two of you. “Choose the celebrant you want to remember on your special day, someone who you feel confident can deliver the type of ceremony you want. “Much of my work comes from referrals, and for that, I am truly grateful. It means I am delivering on my promise, and that’s a great compliment to me and gives the couples the confidence to choose me to be their Marriage Celebrant.”

Wedding Guide

New owners have transformed the Beerwah Hideaway Beerwah Hideaway is a beautifully appointed modern venue set in a stunning tropical garden backdrop of 2.5 acres. For many years the Hideaway has been a popular location for weddings for both locals and those from outside the area that were fortunate to stumble accross the unique boutique garden venue. Mid way during 2016 new owners Amanda and Glen discovered the property was on the market, and straight away they could see the potential to take the venue to the next level. Over the past six months or so they have completely renovated the function room, transforming it into a large air conditioned, lightfilled room, with floor to ceiling glass frontage overlooking tranquil gardens and a beautiful rainforest creek.

Nestled amidst the spectacular Glass House Mountains, the Beerwah Hideaway also offers luxury Bed and Breakfast accommodation, an onsite commercial kitchen and a licensed bar.

Wedding packages are all inclusive from ceremony to reception and can also include accommodation for up to eight guests.

These days the venue can easily cater for 100 sit down or 150 stand up reception guests.

Several ceremony sites are available including an outdoor chapel, rustic shed backdrop or garden and tropical rainforest settings.

The Hideaway can provide an extensive range of furniture, decorations and state of the art entertainment features such as an in-built sound system and projector screen. A range of menu options are available, from a more social canapĂŠ stand up meal, to a buffet or alternate drop sit down meal. Offering exclusivity, tranquillity and seclusion, a personal tour of the facilities and gardens is a must to fully experience the potential of ensuring the wedding of your dreams.

Strokecheck is a new national organization which aims to ensure the early symptoms of stroke are picked up, recognised and acted upon. Strokecheck’s team of accredited medical professionals aims to ensure that appropriate and timely treatment is sought and given. Strokecheck has partnered with Amcal Chemists across Queensland to offer customers the opportunity to discuss the health and lifestyle factors which contribute to strokes.

On Wednesday, March 1, the Strokecheck team will be at Beerwah Amcal Pharmacy. Strokecheck GP Dr Julian White believes that the service will be highly beneficial. “It is a fact that strokes can be avoided in many cases,” he said. Movies

Movies The Light Between Oceans Maleny Film Society will screen ‘The Light Between Oceans’ at the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, February 25 at 7.15pm. This poetic title belongs to the best-selling romantic novel by M.L. Stedman, set in a lighthouse off the coast of Western Australia, and its courageous film adaptation by writer-director Derek Cianfrance. Michael Fassbender plays a damaged World War I veteran who takes up a lonely post on a remote rocky outcrop in a rough seascape, soon to be joined Whole Grass Fed by a bright young wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander) rescued from the tiny Albany community. The couple would seem to Tenderised have found isolated paradise but Rumps are beset by a moral dilemma when a rowboat is washed ashore bearing an KG adult and a baby girl. The mystery deepens after the tragedy-struck couple Sliced Free make a momentous decision and guilt must be assuaged. Rachel Weisz completes the triangle of finely acted characters circling around a loyal little girl. Cinematography (shot in Otago, New Zealand and Tasmania) is realistic and breathtaking, capturing the constant threat of the relentless ocean against normal human morality. This M-rated film lasts for 132 minutes, covering the book’s complete story, using the next generation to ease the stain of guilt – but for some there is no redemption. Doors open at 6.00pm for dinner catered by Wild Rocket. Members of MFS may pre-book on-line at www.malenyfilmsociety.info or at Maleny Information Centre.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for the generous support they have shown me in my role as chaplain at Beerwah State High School over the last 10 years. It is certainly a unique role and one that is hugely rewarding. In my time here at BSHS I have had a variety of one-on-one support conversations with 1,100 students around a huge range of issues and challenges. There have also been numerous lunchtime groups, in class programs, school assemblies, treks, camps and community events that students participate in where I have been able to get to know students and encourage them to explore who they are, how to make good choices and find their purpose in life. It’s a real privilege. I think working with high schools kids is so cool because they are at such a pivotal point in their lives. They are looking for guidance and adults who will engage, encourage and inspire them. I often mention to students that my salary to work at school is paid by donations. This really blows them away and I say, “Yeah, people in the community care enough about you guys that they want me to be here to support you.” So this is a ‘shout out’ to all those who have donated to our chaplaincy service here at Beerwah High over the years, thanks so much! Bail Laws

I am glad to read in the February 15 edition of GC&M News our MP, Andrew Powell’s letter assuring us that the LNP will introduce urgent legislation into State Parliament to amend bail laws and reverse the onus of proof for domestic violence matters. We should recognise that the threat of violence often escalates after a woman has been afraid enough to seek protection or leave the home of the violent relationship. When the perpetrator has already been charged with violent behaviour, there is every possibility that the attitude of that offender may become even more aggressive or vengeful, so it is not surprising that the situation could become more dangerous for the victim and family. Premier Palaszczuk’s proposed review of bail laws

This serious social blight on our society needs urgent laws to protect women and families in such dire circumstances – not another review. Olive Hockings Maleny

Re: NBN story, GC&M News, February 1

In July 2016, the Technology Policy Institute (TPI) issued its scathing assessment of the NBN. “The NBN is an example of an intrusive policy subject to political pressures that has resulted in inefficiencies that distort consumer patterns without changing the competitive landscape," TPI said. "This study illustrates how large scale public infrastructure projects in the telecommunications sector take decades to roll out, are subject to political pressures and result in little or no value to consumers." The resulting NBN infrastructure we do have lags behind much of the world. "Australians continue to experience low quality services due to low speeds, higher prices relative to other countries and a slowing rate of price decrease for internet services in the past eight years.” The report looks at before and after the NBN roll-out compared to other nations, suggesting Australia is worse off. In 2016, we were ranked nineteenth across the OECD for fixed broadband penetration. The NBN Weekly Summary, 'Rollout Summary' (2016): Premises Ready for Service: Target 6.5 million, ACTUAL 2.9 million. Activated Premises: Target 3.8 million, ACTUAL 1.1 million. These show that on targets we are some 66% behind. The report states the proportion of Australians with access to high speed broadband has not improved since 2007. The global Akamai Intelligent ‘State of the Internet’ report shares data on world internet speeds. The report states Australia compared to other nations, before and after the NBN roll-out commenced, is now worse off. On speed, last year Australia ranked second to last in the OECD. In terms of peak connection speed rankings, Australia sat at number 56. We simply aren't keeping up. Australia now ranks 48th in the world for average

Mbps (megabits/second). In April 2016, Internet Australia's Chief Executive said the NBN was already out of date. The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation concluded in 2016, "The low uptake of NBN services makes it difficult to draw conclusions, but, on average, Australia continues to have relatively high prices and low speeds compared with other countries." Peachester Rural Fire Brigade

There is a petition currently circulating in Peachester seeking support for the building of a Rural Fire Station in the area. I strongly urge everyone to sign up. When I was elected as chairman of the Brigade in February 2014 I suggested to the members that a high priority should be placed on acquiring land and building a fire station. Despite some initial resistance to the idea I persevered and was successful in obtaining permission from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines to use part of their land known in Peachester as “the old Dip site”. This occurred in October 2014 and in January 2015 the Commissioner of Fire Services authorised in writing our application to build the station. The Department then started the process of drawing up the lease for the land. As recently as last September the Area Director of Fire Services advised that the lease would be finalised in the near future. So, the building of the station is assured and the Brigade has access to funds for its erection. The reason for the ‘petition’ thus seems to be very curious. I will be very proud and gratified that the process I set in motion in 2014 will come to fruition in due course. I look forward, with the rest of the Peachester Community, to participating in the official opening of the station whenever it takes place. John Gresham Immediate Past Chairman

From the churches Father Kevin Smith - Catholic Church The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is now into its fourth year and its findings have been shocking. A number of religious, government and independent organisations, which have a long history in the community, have been places where children have suffered terrible abuse. Adding to the pain and suffering of the survivors of the abuse has been the failure of these organisations to deal with the allegations seriously and protect others from abuse. This is particularly the case with the Catholic Church in Australia, the Church of which I have been a priest for 31 years. The data revealed recently at the Commission regarding abuse within the Catholic Church was horrific. While not everyone is guilty, many more than the guilty feel shocked, angry, ashamed and disappointed at the degree of abuse and how it was so badly dealt with by some of our Bishops. For some years now Church authorities have been putting in place protocols, procedures and screening for all who work and minister with

children and those men applying to the seminary. While these steps are necessary, an even more important change that must occur is a change of culture. A change of culture would mean a greater openness between people and their clergy, a greater transparency in the life of the clergy and more thorough accountability by the priest to his Bishop and to the people he serves. As well there must be more effective communication between Bishops and between Church agencies particularly those concerned with caring for children. In the meantime the Catholic Church must continue to do all it can to bring justice and healing to survivors of abuse and restore confidence so as to ensure that the Church is a safe place for everyone. In the Garden with Brownie

Ask Brownie Hi, I have three mango trees that have yielded close to 400 crop – and they are a beautiful flavour. Could anyone inform me if this is a normal crop ... next door neighbour has a hive of bush bees. Cheers, Nev Beerwah

Well Nev – it looks like you’ll be the envy of your neighbourhood. Without knowing the variety of mango I’m going to guess that it’s a Kensington Pride (or Bowen) mango – just because they’re the most common and display that nice rosy flush colour when they’re ripening up. Famously, mangoes tend to have boom fruiting seasons every couple of years – when you see trees loaded with mangoes, they’re on the ground and they fill up people’s wheelie bins – even the fruit bats get sick of them and so do the people growing the trees. This year seems to be an average year – so having 400 fruits is pretty special. But because producing fruits takes a lot of energy from the tree, you can most likely expect a smaller crop next season. Citrus do the same. The little native bees from next door will be doing a pollinating good job for you, but surprisingly native flies achieve more than the bees do. In general, fruit setting from the flowers varies every year – depending on temperature, rainfall, wind, disease, pollination vectors and nutrition. Sometimes if it heats up for a while at the start of spring this causes the mango to break out into flower a bit too early. But then when it cools back down, the mango will abort the flowers and drop fruit. Also wet weather during flowering can result in anthracnose infection which will cause fruit not to set. But not all flowers turn into fruit, so it is quiet normal for a lot of the flowers to abort – there is only a 50% success rate of small fruits reaching maturity. We knew about it this year so we pruned it heavily after the first flower and we got new flowers which stayed on much better than the year before. You’ll need to fertilise your trees with a complete fertiliser suitable for fruit trees (nitrogen, phosphate and potassium) at the end of your harvest (say in April), then again in late November (before flowering). It’s also recommended that you feed your trees with potassium sulphate (or potassium nitrate if the leaves are looking a little yellow) at early fruit set. Make sure that you water regularly when the trees flower as this will help prevent flower drop due to water stress. Mangoes flower from the ends of their branches – so light pruning at the end of fruiting will mean that you end up with a greater number of shoots and so a more even crop over the tree. Anthracnose (or black spot disease) is the biggest problem here (except for fruit bats, possums and brush turkeys). Keep the anthracnose at a low level by spraying with a copper fungicide after the fruits have set. Bats, possums and brush turkeys are a whole other story.

Bush food banter with Spencer Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery

It never fails to amaze me the generosity of the Indigenous peoples of this land, who shared and continue to share their knowledge and traditional resources with the strangers who came for dinner and decided stay ... Indigenous people have lived and continue to live on this continent, harvested and shared the wealth of the land for at least 60,000 years! First up this year for our Bush Food Banter column is our local icon, The Bunya - Araucaria bidwillii. Their triennial massive crops have enabled great gatherings of Indigenous peoples, from time immemorial – and we are only just beginning to get a ‘taste’ for what great adaptive tucker they can be. Bunya season is almost over, but if you have collected, been given or bought some, then it’s time to boil, bake, mash or grind – so many great ways to cook and prepare! The simplest method to start with is to shuck them from the cone and then boil the seed (in husk) for 20 to 30 minutes. With a sharp knife, carefully remove from the husk, serve warm with butter and salt to taste. Yum! Spencer and his wife Karen, run Forest Heart Nursery in Maleny. Forest Heart concentrates on local native plants, bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, fruit trees, non-invasive exotics, tools and equipment, garden and ecology education, books, DVD’s, art and so much more. Located at 20 Coral Street, Maleny - phone 5435 2193. Open Tuesday to Friday 9.00am till 5.00pm and Saturday 8.00am till 2.00pm.

Sport Beerwah Ladies Golf Club It's just a numbers game Contributed by Brenda Briese Finally some rain! Not enough to green the grass but it's a start. The "cool" change was short lived, but perhaps next week. Saturday February 11: We had our annual Golf Association Carnival day. Players from several clubs are invited to play in this event. It's both men and women and there was a total of 219 players, which included 28 ladies. I think the heat kept the numbers down (again!). We played a Stableford competition. Winner was Brenda Briese on 38 points, runner up was Jo Malone 36 points OCB from 2nd runner up Tam Reid (Peregian). NTPs: (2) Andrea Campbell. (5) Leanne Dowdle (Murgon). (16) Marilyn Bird ( Wondai). (18) Sharon Stevens (Peregian). BRD went to 34pts. On a few occasions each year we invite the male members to play in our competition and Thursday, February 16 was one of those. It was a 2 ball Ambrose. It's always a popular day and we had a field of 120. (I think the blokes like the morning tea!) Winners: Mavis and Trevor Brimelow 63 nett. R/up. Karen Kemp and Jennifer Kelly 64. 2nd runner up Cathy Stone and Alan Miles 65. NTPs (2) J and B Butler. (5) G and M Dangerfield. (16) J Malone and G Humphreys. (18) H Hannah and C Penny. BRD went to 68 nett. If you have any interest in playing this wonderful game please don't hesitate to contact the Pro-shop on 5494 6611. Still looking forward to some cooler weather and lots more rain.

FEBRUARY 22 2017

Contributed by Steven Soanes Congratulations go to Shane Brady of the Landsborough Cricket Club, celebrating his 44th birthday on February 11 in a match against a very competitive Stanley Rivers. Shane took the last five wickets of the match, with figures of 5 for 12 off 6 overs, with less than 30 minutes left to play in the contest, treating spectators to some of the finest wicket to wicket slow bowling seen in a long while. Just to top it off in the very same match, he scored his maiden century in style with a ‘Man of the Match’ winning 154. Going on this form, the club wishes Shane many more happy returns.

AFL Auskick at Glasshouse Hinterland AFC

Contributed by Craig Bales Glasshouse Hinterland's Club Auskick will be commencing this Thursday, February 23, from 4.00pm to 5.00pm at our grounds at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. Club Auskick is for the age groups of five and nine years old and those who are older but not wanting to play club football. Auskick is for both boys and girls and is run over an eight week period. NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for primary school aged children and their families. Sunshine Coast Development Coordinator Damien Richards said that Auskick is all about teaching boys and girls the skills of AFL in a friendly, safe environment and most importantly having fun while beginning their AFL experience. The rules are modified to give children a really gentle introduction to AFL. Parents are encouraged to join in all the activities and the kids' faces just light up when they see mum or dad having a kick or taking a mark. If you require further information, please contact Craig on 0414 225 329 or simply rock up on Thursday.

The Range Croquet Club Maleny

Contributed by Neil Lovett Before our recent monthly meeting, eager beavers Vince and Val Carbery, Sally Adams, Bev Sockhill and Sarah Widin turned up to coach or be coached, with the morning dew still on the lawns. On Thursday, our indefatigable leader Vince was back on the lawns to give newcomers Eve Clark and Carol Johnson their first taste of our fascinating sport, and both showed clear promise. After this edition’s deadline has passed, we shall gather again to dethatch our second lawn. More labour in store for us, but the reward of a better playing surface makes it all worthwhile. For information about joining, playing times, bookings or coaching, ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ian Hansen To start this week’s notes on a high note rather than the debacle Tuesday’s Bowls have become, congratulations are in order for our two teams that played away last week. First up on Wednesday, February 15, the Triples Team of Graeme Glover, Miles Allen and Allan Cook were the winners at Woodford. Then on Thursday, Graeme Glover and Miles Allen teamed up to win the Pairs at Glasshouse. Well done Graeme, Miles and Allan. Wednesday’s Twilight Challenge winning Teams were: Mobile Kingdom, Krackerjacks, Cookies, Tutors, Ben Bryce, Musketeers, Wot Nots and Ezi Riders. The lucky Draw winners were: Lead - Ray Pantlin, Second - Margaret Ginns and Skip - Steve Ellett. The Touchers went to Ray Ellemor, Jim Davidson and Miles Allen. The Money Board Winners were Carol Cook (second week in a row) and Henry Harbutt. It’s really great to see the support this format is receiving as it is a tremendous benefit to our Club. Friday there were six rinks of Scroungers and the respective winners were: Robbie Deans, Allan Cook, Curley Petersen, Graeme Glover, John Kapetanic and Relma Godfrey. The only Sponsors’ Prize winner present and so able to claim his winnings was Ian Hansen who won the Top of the Range Meat Prize. The Money Board went to, who else, but Joe Walters. It must be at least a couple of weeks since his last win. This week there may be Jackpot Pairs/ Triples Tuesday, there will be The Twilight Challenge Wednesday evening and Scroungers Friday afternoon. Next week there is the Mapleton Beef Day, Sunday, February 26 and our Monthly Pairs Monday the 27th. www.gcnews.com.au

Contributed by Kevin Leaman The Armestos Bee Gees Premier Men's team played their first league fixture on Saturday away to last year’s third place team Buderim. The day had started well with the Under 17 Division 1 team recording a 7-0 victory in a friendly away to Caloundra. The Premier Men's Reserves had a very exciting game against a strong Buderim side eventually drawing 3-3 after taking the lead late in the game with a superb shot from the halfway line from Tom Cameron. Buderim drew level with only minutes to spare. So then came the highly anticipated Premier game. Bee Gees had a lot of the possession in the first half but could not finish. They went in at half time 1-0 up due to a Daniel Machell header from a corner in the 40th minute. Buderim equalised early in the second half, but Bee Gees kept their composure and went ahead when Cameron Nairn scored after 65 minutes. Buderim were then awarded a dubious penalty which was slotted home after the second attempt. Bee Gees had Andras Vagsheyg sent from the field after 76 minutes after an altercation with a Buderim player. At this point it was neck and neck with both teams missing chances. Instead of playing out for a draw, Bee Gees kept pushing forward. Jed Zanos received the ball on the edge of the penalty area, beat his man and then thrashed the ball into the top right hand corner to give Bee Gees their first win over Buderim for many years. The roar from the Bee Gees supporters when the winning goal went in would have been heard at Mount Beerwah. Coach Daniel Carew was pleased with the effort put in after a tough week at the club. Local boy Glen Morris was named man of the match by Carew.

Nearest the Pins went to Karen Heading on the 3rd hole and Robin Hay on the 5th hole. Saturday, February 18: There was an 18 Hole Single Stableford Competition run at our Club for both the ladies and the men. Olaf is a very good

looking chap with beautiful markings, he is a Domestic Shorthair and is three years old. Olaf needs a new home where he will be kept as an inside cat, and also the only cat, please, as he does not like to share. His adoption fee is normally $110, but for the month of February, the fee is only $50.00 to the correct new home. This boy is de-sexed, microchipped and vaccinated. This is great value, and the ideal time to take a rescue cat into your home. Open: Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm

Just for Laughs In your dreams On the morning of her birthday, a woman told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me
a diamond necklace. What do you think it means?” “Maybe you’ll find out tonight,” he said. That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. She ripped off the wrapping paper and found a book titled 'The Meaning of Dreams'.

For the Mrs?

Even though there was a cyclone raging outside, I made it the 500 metres to the bakery, where I asked the owner for six bread rolls. “Your wife must like her bread rolls,” he said. “How do you know these are for my wife?” I asked. “Because your mother wouldn’t send you out in weather like this.” Lennie from Glass House Mountains

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 22/02/17 ARIES 21 March - April 20 You may well and truly be ready for solitude this weekend as there is a Pisces New Moon. This fosters a reclusive mood over the next two weeks. It usually throws up some suspicions, talk these out and think things through before jumping to conclusions. Friends hold the key to a happy weekend, so check out their plans. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 Mars and Uranus are together, creating a volatile conjunction at the Pisces New Moon Solar Eclipse. Perhaps it will hard to stay in control of your escalating emotion as everyone bounces off each other, like a foursome ping-pong match! Even though there are warm friendships there’s also fast action to right a wrong or take a risk. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 The New Moon Pisces eclipse at the end of the month will give you a long term impact. Over this weekend there may be an unstable, shocking and very unexpected group activity with the Mars/Uranus conjunction. Late night parties can escalate into a major brawl. This New Moon kicks starts your imagination for true inspirations. CANCER June 24 - July 22 This weekend, under the Solar Eclipse New Moon in Pisces you have six months to sort out clearly what has happened to you over the past few months. You are to seek higher ground since you feel that your security has become shaky. A morning chat with a close friend draws you into a world to change your views now.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 This New Moon weekend emphasizes your domestic life and family planning. Therefore this may be a good time to work at turning a dream into a reality. This New Moon Pisces eclipse is definitely a time for every Sagittarian to ‘look before you leap!’ Avoid gambling – and keep looking straight ahead when you are driving. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This weekend, under the New Moon in Pisces, it may be the time for you to put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on your door! Under this drifting/dreaming weekend, Jupiter, balancing upon the Libran Scales, is now retrograding and therefore you will see slowdowns and re-assessments. Suspicious energies may arise again. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This weekend sees an eclipse that will impact to become a possible sudden change in your source of income. Just keep your finger on the pulse and let your guide spirits expand your sphere of interests. You only have to be careful about rushing headlong into a project that takes on a job that is too ambitious. It should be easier to deal with people now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Keep a keen eye on your monetary matters, the New Moon weekend in Pisces will emphasise your clever analysis and activities that are terribly important to you, working behind the scenes. You are clever at taking on the welfare interests of others and seeing which charities deserve your energies. Display poise and self-confidence now.

LEO July 23 - August 22 A very strange few months awaits you after this weekend. There may be, in fact, a rude awakening, particularly regarding money gained from others. Travel plans are likely to take a tumble. Law decisions or court cases will probably not turn out as expected. Under a New Moon in Pisces this weekend, it is good to have a Plan B when Plan A fails. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 There could be some serious intimate surprises. It is time to know who you are trusting, and don’t take risks or display reckless behaviour that could get somebody into trouble. Stay on the softer shades of relationships as the eclipse on the weekend stays potent for a long time, possibly creating a new pattern in your relationship life. LIBRA September - 23 October 22 There is a significant long term spin coming up in your astrological cycle. You are entering a few months under a new Solar Eclipse in which you have to take more determination to imbue the forces of love, kindness and compassion into your local war zone! Otherwise the next best thing is to retire, resign or escape from the storm now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 You are to take the best advice the stars can give you now, not to take unnecessary risks over this weekend, when Mars joins with Uranus, but stresses out against Pluto. It will be important to protect your health, be careful of dangerous medical procedures or overuse of drugs. As this is an accident prone weekend, drive safely!
