Hi Everyone Most weekends there are plenty of things going on to keep us busy locally, whether it be something entertaining, fun and social – but this weekend it is something much more serious – a 50% off marked prices at the Beerwah Recycle Market will certainly be catching many people’s attention. I spoke to Trish, who is in charge of the Recycle Market, and she said that almost everything will be discounted this Saturday – with only a few exceptions including some of the bigger furniture items. She said that they are hoping to have a couple of this type of discount day each year, as a way of saying thanks to their regular shoppers and to be able to take the pressure off a little bit more for the many people in our community who are doing it really tough. I can imagine that the extra

discount will be an added incentive for lots of regulars – I have a bit of a thing for retro sixties kitchen ware and crockery and there are a couple of items I’ve been looking at for a while – this just might make them necessities at my house instead of ‘nice to haves’. So if anyone else has had their eye on the pink dinner set behind the counter … it really isn’t that nice and you would be crazy to want to buy that! Regards,

Rebecca Forsythe, a BADYAC volunteer, said people who went along had a great time. “It went really well, we had around 300 people who showed up on the day. There were lots of young people and teenagers and also a lot of families who came along to support their children.” The skate, scooter and bike competition which was sponsored by SMS (Surf, Moto, Skate) Beerwah, Board Store Maroochydore, and Beerwah Cycles, was extremely popular and the crowd witnessed some awesome riding and tricks. “We had people come from Brisbane, Caloundra and all over the coast. Some of the promotional options were a Facebook page and that got the word out quite quickly,” Rebecca said. During the event, students from the Building Futures Flexi School provided food and drink to raise funds for their camping trip. Their fundraising efforts aren’t over yet however as the students have also decided to hold a Flexi Car Wash fundraiser. Anyone willing to wash cars in the middle of winter deserves lots of support. If you would like to help make the students camping trip a reality, head to Shell Service Station, 39 Simpson Street, Beerwah on Saturday, June 25 from 10.00am to 2.00pm. There will also be a sausage sizzle, face painting and music.

Residents on hold for mobile tower decision by Rosemary Hayes Last week a petition with 374 signatures against the proposed Mobile Phone Tower at Landsbrough was given to Sunshine Coast Council. In addition, several letters were also hand delivered and more letters against the tower were sent in directly. Given only three week’s notice to make submissions, residents Anne Eglinton and Keith Hoffman are pleased that their public appeal for help to stop the Tower has garnered a lot of support, including that of Cr Jenny McKay. In particular there was also a high level of concern and support from parents who have children attending the local school, kindergarten and child care centre. “I’ve heard the expression ‘power of the press’, wow, it made such a difference when your GCNews came out and the Caloundra Weekly too. Thanks to you things got rolling,” Anne said. Anne believes if they were given adequate warning, more people would have been able to voice their concerns. “A couple from New South Wales especially moved here to get away from mobile phone towers. They hadn’t been long in Landsborough and this happened - they were upset. “I wish I’d known what to do and who to approach in the very beginning, because we had such a lack of time, three weeks. We hadn’t had long enough.” Although Anne is 79, she said she knew she had to try. “I’ve gotten weary but I’ve liked doing it; it’s been really interesting and it is a good cause. We don’t really know what damage its doing. It’s for the future of the children really.” Anne is hopeful that what everyone has been able to do in such a short time will make a difference. “I’m just trying to look on the bright side and keep praying. I’m quietly confident but I suppose I’ve got to be prepared,” she said. At this stage it is not known when a decision about the Tower will be made.

A warm welcome to Br John

Glasshouse Country Dog Wash

Warm water hydrobath, Ears, eyes & nails,

The Rev’d Br John Stevenson (OGS, B.Th., M.Th) has been appointed by Archbishop Aspinall as the new Deacon to the Anglican Parish of Caloundra / Glasshouse Country. Based in Landsborough and taking primary pastoral responsibility for the area, including Mooloolah Valley and Beerwah, he will commence on Sunday, June 26. He is very much looking forward to joining the community and caring for its people. GCNews thought it would be nice to welcome Rev’d Stevenson, also known as Brother John, by sharing a little information about his background and what has brought him to the area. Hailing from Toogoolawah in the Brisbane Valley, Brother John was educated at John Paul College, Queensland, going on to study Agriculture (Dairy) at South Burnett College of TAFE followed by a diverse work background in the stockfeed, shipping (live cattle export) and dairy / herd management industries. Responding to a sense of vocation within the Church of God, Brother John commenced Theological studies in 2003 and graduated from Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Theology in 2006. With a deep love of the Catholic tradition within the Church of England, Brother John became a postulant with the Anglican Religious Order ‘Oratory of the Good Shepherd’ that same year. The Oratory, now a worldwide Order of celibate lay and ordained brothers, was founded at Cambridge University in 1913 with the aim of restoring good Catholic order and worship within the life of the University Colleges, many of its founders being dedicated to the academic life and serving as University Chaplains.

Brother John trained for ordained ministry at Saint Francis’ College, Milton, and continued his theological studies through Charles Sturt University, graduating with a ‘Master of Theology’ in 2010. In early 2011, Brother John was ordained Deacon by Archbishop Aspinall and was fully professed as a member of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd. Brother John has a particular interest in regional and rural ministry and greatly looks forward to serving the Caloundra / Glasshouse Country communities.

When Valerie Bradford buried her brother, Mervyn, four years ago at Beerwah Cemetery she was concerned that in the future there wouldn’t be room for other family members. Thanks to the recent $75,000 extension she doesn’t have to worry any more. Valerie, a Beerwah resident for 39 years said, “when we came down a month ago we noticed all the work being done. It was great, a big improvement. It’s lovely here. My brother was an old drover and it was just perfect for him out here in the bush.” The new extension will provide approximately 1,100 burial plots and includes the construction of a new concrete road through the centre of the cemetery. Further improvements will include two gazebos, ashes gardens and a set of gates on the front fence line. Troy Andreassen, from Sunshine Coast Council Cemetery section said a further $45,000 would

be spent on the project which was due for completion by the end of the year. There is definitely one other thing Valerie would like to see included. “Signs. There’s none at all at the moment, not even one out on the main road. People around here don’t even know there’s a cemetery at Beerwah,” she said. Cr Anna Grosskreutz is pleased that another project will be completed before she leaves next year. “These places hold the region’s history, heritage and settlement patterns and many people have been concerned over the years that these cemeteries will be full. “When they’ve got loved ones already buried here, most people’s wishes are that everyone’s together. Certainly there’s enough space here now for the next 40 years,” she said. www.gcnews.com.au

USC graduate rips into crime fiction novel A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate has published his first novel based on a short story he wrote for assessment during his Computer-Based Art and Design degree seven years ago. Dean Jacobs, 32, of Beerwah, has written an original twist on the legend of Jack the Ripper for his crime fiction novel, ‘The Streets of Whitechapel’. Each chapter starts with a piece of Dean’s original artwork on the Ripper theme. He has received the first advance copy from Balboa Publishing, a division of Hay House

Dean with his authored paperback, hot off the press

Australia, and is marketing the paperback via a website, Facebook and YouTube. It is available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble and also as an eBook. It is the next step in an expanding career for graphic designer Dean and his wife Kylene, who write and illustrate children’s books and run Bizy Bug Creative, a design agency. Dean and Kylene, also a USC graduate, said they were using the skills and confidence gained at University to follow their passions. Dean said his novel was edited by USC tutor Jane Todd and he was mentored by USC Associate Professor Gary Crew, a highly-awarded author. “I covered all the bases of publishing at University, from creative writing techniques and characterisation to visuals and communicating with the industry and clients,” Dean said. “The idea for my novel grew after I got good feedback from lecturers on the original short story. After finishing a children’s book last year, I spent two months writing the novel and I’m so happy with the result.” The book retails at $25.99.

Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy simplifies racing Not only are the riders quick at the Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club, but also just as quick are the queues at the registration counter during the club’s fortnightly Friday night race meets. Thanks to the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy Community Grants the club received $1,500.00. This generous grant allowed the club to purchase a laptop, printer system and software package, which has improved and streamlined the club’s registration, racing and scoring process. Previously everything was done manually at each race meet, which was time consuming and required more volunteers to run the night. The computer has now simplified this whole process with all the riders’ details being stored into the specially designed program. When a rider now turns up for racing it’s as easy as scanning their licence and they are instantly nominated into their correct groups and they are all set for racing. Even the scoring process previously took up to several hours to complete, is now a breeze. With just a click of a few buttons all race results

Holiday horse riding at Rossi’s You won’t hear the words “I’m bored” these school holidays if you book the children into one of the fantastic Horse Riding at Rossi’s workshops over the winter break. The workshops are from June 27 to July 8, from 9.00am to 3.00pm Monday to Friday. Small groups of full day and half day workshops are available for kids aged six to 16 years. All skill levels are catered for from beginners to advanced. The workshops will cover two hours riding, feeding, grooming, general ground work with the horse, basic firstaid, hoof care and more. “I teach them that there’s so much to horses than just riding them. We get mainly girls, they like to ride and enjoy the hands-on grooming and interaction with the animals,” said Rossi. While everyone who spends time around horses needs to take it seriously because of safety, Rossi ensures there is also a lot of fun. “It’s not all serious,” she said. “You’re aware of the safety but you try to make the day very

From the Schools

Tristan Bancks visits Beerwah Council Library Beerwah State Primary School students recently met children’s author Tristan Bancks at the Beerwah Library. Tristan spoke to the students about his change of career from an actor on the television show ‘Home and Away’ to his current job as a children’s author. He gave the students a lot of tips on how to improve their writing. Tristan attributes his love of writing to his

‘write anything book’ from primary school. His teacher would get all of the children to jot down their ideas and write their stories. Tristan still uses exercise books to record his ideas. He has inspired the students to read his stories, and also to write their own. Tristan visited the Beerwah Library as part of the annual Voices on the Coast Festival.

Tristan and students share their interests in storytelling

Sweet and wobbly Origin celebrations

Lucy Sharp helps hand out the jelly cups

For students of Glasshouse Country Christian College, the State of Origin series is more than a game of Rugby League, more than State versus State or mate against mate, it’s jelly cup time! The enjoyment of State rivalry runs through the playground each Origin game as Queensland supporters enjoy a maroon jelly cup with a chocolate cane toad (aka Freddo Frog) and New South Wales supporters enjoy a cup of blue jelly with a chocolate cockroach (aka Bertie Beetle). Christine Scott from GCCC Sports Department instigated the event a couple of years ago and it has become a much loved and tasty tradition in the College. “Even though this is a bit of fun, we want to ignite a passion for sport in the students,” Mrs Scott said. “We want the students to enjoy a lifetime of sports participation, health and fitness.” Senior students were all for the friendly camaraderie that is State of Origin but the Year 1 students were more focussed on which one of them ended up with the bluest tongue.

World Vision Global Leadership Conference

Recently a group of Unity College students attended the World Vision Global Leadership Conference at Lake Kawana Community Centre. These Year 10 students, James Connell, Nathan Snowdon, Sarah Steel and Tiarn Waterton, were invited to attend the conference due to their recent study of a ‘Social Justice‘ unit in their Religious Education classes. Students participated in a World Leadership Simulation which required them to work in small groups as countries’ and to trade and negotiate food, goods and jewels in order to maintain the needs of the residents in their country. The simulation proved to be an interesting experience for students in learning how to cooperate with others, and just how much work is required to provide for the needs of a population. Students were also faced with some confronting facts about the state of our world, and listened

to some heartbreaking stories of poverty and hunger in East Timor. The conference called for students to be ‘creators of change’, and encouraged them to act responsibly and Unity College students proactively as our future attended World vision generation of leaders. Global Leadership Listed below are some thoughts of two of the conference day students who attended the conference: James Connell said, “it was an inspirational event encouraging us to really do something about poverty.” Sarah Steel said she learnt how one person can make a difference. “I would definitely recommend this experience to other students,” she said.

Doing Business

Chamber dinner heats up By Lea Parkes The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce holds a dinner each year where they look for a motivating speaker to capture the enthusiasm and interest of the members and other local business people for the evening. Their 2011 dinner held recently at the Beerwah Hotel certainly provided some interesting responses from the audience, with the special guest on the night being the Mayor of Sunshine Coast Council, Bob Abbott. The Mayor came along to speak to the group about what he saw as the important business issues for the Sunshine Coast in 2011 and beyond and to answer questions from the business people about the concerns they had about the economic future of the local area. Quite quickly there were several robust debates about a number of Council decisions that individual local business people have been frustrated by, and this frustration seemed to rapidly turn the heat up for the Mayor. There was definitely some finger pointing, colourful language and accusations being made and not just from the guests, as the guest speaker definitely gave as good as he got. The fact that the speakers lectern was placed in front of the hotel’s roaring fire may have added to the Mayor getting a little hot under the collar. The night also gave each of the Division 1 candidates (yes all four were there on the night) who have already made it be known that they are running in the next Council election, the opportunity to ask the Mayor his take on a range of issues. Some used the open forum with varying degrees of success, with others preferring the option of a quiet word after question time was over. Mayor Bob Abbott with Chamber President Kel McNamara

Job security! Job security…. What job security?

Rhonda

by Rhonda James, Regional Master – James of James’ Home Services, Sunshine Coast James' Home Why were more millionaires made Services during the Great Depression, than in any other time in history? Because as Napoleon Hill once said, ‘Opportunity often comes disguised in the form of misfortune, or temporary defeat’. They had an attitude of long term survival. I can remember as a young girl sitting at long timber trestle tables watching family and friends laugh and talk loudly with hands going wildly in the air (as Italians do) and smelling the strong smell of tobacco drifting from the curing sheds. An abundance of pastas, drinks and desserts ensured we kept hearing ‘mangiare’, ‘mangiare’. My grandparents were hard workers and when they partied, they partied. And when they worked, they worked. Sailing over on a boat from Italy, my grandfather knew Australia was the land of opportunity. A land where great fortunes could be made for him and his family and generations to come. They would have their own farm and work for their financial security. They knew they would be financially secure by having their own business. A business growing tobacco. Not much has changed in my family over the years. My husband started James’ Home Services 17 years ago. Why? Because he knew having his own business would always ensure we would have financial security and freedom. That our children would come first and work second. We work around our children’s school hours, sports and them needing us to be at home if they are sick. We determine the hours we work and our children benefit. So like my grandparents, Robert and I work side by side because we know our families financial security, is our responsibility. We no longer have family gatherings in a tobacco curing shed, but as we sit on the veranda and watch the kids run around the yard and play, I can’t help but think history has a habit of repeating itself. So as we experience 5.2 per cent unemployment, there is another stream of millionaires out there right now creating their legacy. What are YOU DOING? Job Security! What job security?

Glasshouse Country View Club Winter Wonderland Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer

This month saw the 8th birthday of our VIEW Club and this special event was celebrated with a blue, white and silver Winter Wonderland theme. With the hall decked out with winter scenes we enjoyed poem recitals by Elaine Riches, bell ringing by the Glasshouse Mountains Musicians, songs by Heather’s songsters, dancing by the Tap Katz dancers, raffles and good old winter singsongs. Lunch was excellent with soup, a variety of winter pies with all the trimmings and Leanne’s special cup cakes for desert. Many people went to a great deal of trouble to make this a very special day and this was appreciated by the 68 members and guests who attended. The next VIEW Club outing will be on Wednesday, July 6, a beachfront walk at Caloundra followed by fish and chips for lunch. Husbands / partners are welcome to join the ladies for this outing. VIEW clubs are a valued part of the Smith Family which is a national, independent children’s charity committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education and support. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9094 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply any further information about the Club. A busy financial year for this branch commenced with Fellowship with women at Embrasia Retirement Village in Beerwah. During the year, the proceeds from the successful 2010 Garden Party and three ‘Cent Sales’ enabled donations to the following needs - Prostrate Cancer $300.00, Disaster Fund $200.00, Breast Cancer Research $150.00, as well as the Annual $100.00 Bursary each to Beerwah High and Glasshouse Country Christian College. The monthly community entertainment ‘HOY’ continues at the meeting room on the first Tuesday of each month at 9.00am. The new format is that a choice of groceries is available for winners. It’s a fun morning with morning tea and raffle as well. Eight wheelchair bags made by a member joined with 86 leprosy bandages and scarfs, plus birthing kits have been sent to those in need in areas of the world - every minute of every day, a woman dies in childbirth. Peachester Park

Condition of Hovard Road

Long term Peachester residents will recall council has been trying to gain a parcel of land for park purposes from the State Governments Department on Resource Management for nearly a decade. Council has the funding but the Department has refused twice in previous years for a transfer of the unused land. The good news is the council property team appear to be making headway and we may see this park achieved before I leave office early next year. As this is another long term priority of mine to finalise, I have continued to make the enquiries of the property team from time to time. The problem has been the State Department did not see it as a priority. The council and I did on behalf of the community. Once we have the land signed off and the paper work completed I can call a town meeting to discuss the various options for the development of this strategic parkland purchase for Peachester.

Beerwah Aquatic Centre closure

The Beerwah Aquatic Centre’s main 25m pool will be closed for essential maintenance for around five weeks from June 27. The Learn to swim pool and classes will continue. During the closure Council will be repairing the expansion joints, any defective paint work, repainting the black lines and making necessary repairs to the timber deck around the kiddies pool. I understand this may inconvenience the community, but the work is important and needs to be carried out as soon as possible. Cr Anna is available for meetings, by appointment only, at her Beerwah office located in the BADYAC building, in the Beerwah Sportsground Complex on Roberts Road. Please call 5420 8987 to book a time.

Council’s extensive road network has been reassessed following the January rain event. The saturation of road pavements has required a reprioritisation of Council’s road reseal and rehabilitation program. Council’s sealed road network is approximately 2,700km in length and priorities for reseal and rehabilitation are assigned on risk minimisation, maximisation asset life and minimum whole of life costs, consistent with the allocated annual budget. Council’s engineers have inspected Hovard Road and confirmed that the section of road in poor condition needs complete pavement reconstruction. It is proposed that the works will be undertaken in the 2012/13 financial year as part of Council’s road reseal / rehabilitation program. Should the pavement deteriorate more rapidly than currently anticipated, we will undertake a review of this timing. Until these works are commenced, regular maintenance will be carried out to ensure the road remains in a trafficable condition.

Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens at Tanawha Come and join us at Sunshine Coast Council’s second Sundayze Series on Sunday, June, 26 from 11.30am to 3.30pm.Themed Celtic Revival, the free community event will feature local bands Cloudstreet and Ironstone along with the Maleny Celtic Band and dynamic duo Steve Cook and John Thompson providing some toe-tapping fiddling tunes. There will be a jumping castle, face painter and crazy candles workshop for the kids as well as food stalls and coffee for parents. For further information please visit the What’s On page on Council’s website.

Have you paid your dog registration?

After continued trends of dog offences across the region, council officers will be following up unpaid dog registration notices. Officers will attend properties where dogs have been previously registered and have not renewed for this year. There are approximately 2,100 unpaid registrations. Officers will issue an infringement for dogs identified as not registered in the first instance and then if registration remains unpaid after seven days it will progress to prosecution as the State Act does not allow Council any other avenue.

RE: Local government candidates It was a pleasure, to meet Mr Stallworthy, at last month’s Glasshouse Country Sustainability & Garden Expo when I took the opportunity to introduce myself and offer him my card detailing my contact particulars. The subsequent views and advice presented in his letter to the editor dated June 8 regarding the choice of a new local representative for Division 1 are therefore noted with appreciation. Though I do not agree with all of the comments in this article, I have to agree with his following quote: ‘Take the time to check each candidate out, remember this candidate will be responsible to you, the ratepayer and to our area. We want one who will do their utmost for each and every one of us’. Ann Ross Sunshine Coast Division 1 Candidate

We don’t want this tower Following the news item in last week’s paper, I collected from the Beerwah Library a book called ‘The Force: Living safely in a world of electromagnetic pollution’ by Lyn McLean. How can any intelligent person consider allowing a 35 metre mobile phone tower to be erected in the centre of Landsborough? On page 119 of the book it says, ‘One study found that children living in the beam of the transmitter had reduced memory and attention, slower reaction times, and poorer motor function.’ Another found that people who were subject to greater exposure had higher levels of immunoglobulin A, which is found in diseases such as multiple myeloma and liver disease, and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Other researchers found that radiation had damaging effects on cows and vegetation, and birds tried to avoid it. Scientists have long believed that there is a link between health problems and radiation from mobile phones, wireless connections, power lines, and electronic devices. Radiation has been linked to issues such as depression, fatigue, miscarriages, childhood leukaemia and even brain tumours. I’m convinced that mobile phones will be ‘the asbestos’ of the future. Let the Sunshine Coast Council know today we Don’t Want this Tower! Helen Eddie, Peachester www.gcnews.com.au

Your article didn’t go far enough I was pleased to see that the paper ran my comments last week about the Streetscaping at Glass House Mountains Township, being insanity gone made - but I don’t think that the article went far enough. What you really need to do is to ask locals what they think of the area in front of the Glass House Mountains Rail which runs directly off the township.

This intersection is hopeless – is it an actual round-about or not? Well it looks like it could be from the shape and the fact that road runs around it, but there is no line marking or signage or any real indication for how drivers should preceed in the area. And for those drivers in bigger vehicles they have the added obstacle of a storm water drainage pit in the edge of the ‘round about’ which for the buses is a nighmare. My observation is that vehicles going in to the train station use it as a round-about but vehicles coming out of the pub seem to use Bishop Street as a two way road, which is all fine if it isn’t happening at the same time. In an accident who would be in the wrong? Without any line markings or signage who would know. The area is not just confusing for drivers but for pedestrians and those being dropped off. Pedestrian access is a total mystery, there is incomplete pathways going to the railway station from all directions and access through the car park entrance on to the platform are basically done at the pedestrians risk. I would have thought that whoever is responsible for this area – Council / State Government would have a legal duty of care to ensure the safety of everyone who uses it. The next Division 1 Councillor should really take a good look at the situation and focus some energy into improving it! Steve Ralph Glass House Mountains

Drainage works The Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Committee would like to publicly thank Councillor Anna Grosskreutz, the Sunshine Coast Council and the council workers involved in quickly resolving a dangerous situation which arose at the Hall due to the recent wet weather. The existing drain, which drains a substantial area to the north of the Hall, failed due to the volume of water directed into it from properties in the area, causing scouring along the outside of the pipes. This resulted in the soil above the drain being sucked away leaving a large hole in the hall grounds about one metre deep. The committee approached Councillor Grosskreutz seeking assistance and within a few days Council officers inspected the problem, decided that urgent rectification work was needed and commenced work. Substantial work was necessary as the old pipes had to be removed with some of the concreting above them. This was further compounded by the proximity of a sewerage main in the vicinity. Larger pipes have now been installed. The staff carrying out the work are to be commended for the way in which the job was carried out in sometimes difficult conditions, and the clean and tidy condition in which they left the site. Once again thanks to all concerned for the speed and effort put in to the job. The Hall is run as a community facility by volunteers who put a large amount of time and effort in and it is very pleasing to see that this is recognised by the Sunshine Coast Council. The next Hall Committee meeting will be on Thursday, July 7 at the hall at 7.00pm. Members of the public interested in seeing the hall preserved for future generations would be most welcome.

Koala thanks On behalf of the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, Murray Munro, Appeals Manager and Volunteer Phil Siggers, would like to thank very much all the businesses who donated prizes and all the folk who gave donations and bought tickets in our multi prize raffle (26 prizes) raising $1,068.00 towards research into diseases which are threatening koala numbers. All winners have been notified by phone. Again many thanks for helping our beautiful icon.

Thoughts appreciated The Moffat family would like to say thank you to everyone who has sent cards and kind thoughts to us during this sad time. Moya Moffat and family Glass House Mountains

Smith Family Winter Appeal Members of Glasshouse Country VIEW Club are asking the community to really open their hearts to help transform the lives of these kids forever through education by donating to The Smith Family this winter. The Smith Family believe it’s essential to give children the means to reach their potential through education to ensure they have the best possible chance for a happy and successful future with loads of wonderful opportunities. The Smith Family Winter Appeal is aiming to reach its $4 million fundraising target by June 30 and in the process, hopes to shine the spotlight on the plight of disadvantaged Australian children who are currently out of sight, out of mind, vulnerable, isolated and missing out. As a valued part of The Smith Family, VIEW members contribute significant fundraising initiatives and volunteering support to help disadvantaged Australian children get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. In the last year, VIEW members raised over $1 million through fundraising initiatives and by supporting more than 800 children through The Smith Family’s ‘Learning for Life’ sponsorship program. Donations to the Winter Appeal will support The Smith Family to deliver literacy, numeracy, mentoring and wellbeing programs, to disadvantaged children in 95 communities across Australia. To support the Winter Appeal, which runs until June 30, call 1800 024 069 or visit www.thesmithfamily.com.au All donations are fully tax deductible.

Berry different raspberry A ‘Berry Different Raspberry’ was recently unveiled as part of the Sunshine Coast’s ‘Seasons of the Sun’ showcase display, involving some of the 500 food and beverage producers across the Sunshine Coast. Gowinta Farms began commercial trials just four months ago of the new Driscoll's Estrella Raspberry, which is the first attempt to grow the gold / yellow raspberry in Queensland. The new Driscoll's Estralla is distinguished from other Driscoll's raspberry cultivars by its yellow fruit colour, fruit firmness, consistent fruit structure, high yield and excellent flavour. The Driscoll's Estralla which translated from Spanish means ‘Star’, is evidence of how Gowinta Farms continues to diversify in fresh

produce grown on the Sunshine Coast. The three acres of undercover raspberry trials, add to the 170 acres of strawberries, three million pineapples, 10,000 lychee trees and six acres of green house crops. “Investors know the importance of having diversity in a share portfolio and farming these days is no different,” says Marketing Manager, James Ashby. “Growing raspberries on the Sunshine Coast was once upon a time unheard of, but new Driscoll varieties have the potential to produce quality berries nine to 12 months of the year.” For further information on this ‘berry’ different berry, contact James Ashby, Marketing Manager, Gowinta Farms phone 0412 526 371.

As the mercury dipped outside, the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club was transformed into a blue and white winter wonderland as part of the Glasshouse Country VIEW Club’s 8th Birthday celebrations. The function room was filled to 1 capacity with members and guests who were treated to a morning and afternoon of great food and entertainment. Wonderful raffle prizes and a trade table filled with a variety of delightful items ensured many didn’t go home empty handed. Margaret Donoghoe, President of the Glasshouse VIEW Club said the celebrations were mainly about one thing, “just really having fun today.” The VIEW Club is for women of any ages from 18 to 100 or over. “We support the Smith Family in helping to educate children from disadvantaged families. Apart from the money we do send to the Smith Family, we can also sponsor students and we have two Learning for Life students at the moment,” Margaret said. The Club currently has 42 members and are keen for new members to join, especially younger members. “We meet for a luncheon meeting on the third Wednesday of each month. We also have an outing on the first Wednesday of each month, a social get together. We go to different places and do different things,” said Margaret.

Jazz on the menu at Beerwah Hotel this Sunday Sue Bond is back again at Beerwah Hotel this Sunday, June 26 with her quintet of some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians from 1.00pm – 4.00pm. It’s great to hear musicians who have been quietly and successfully entertaining audiences with their playing and singing around the world with work of the highest calibre. It’s not surprising to know that some of them live on the Sunshine Coast. After singing with all the best people in the best places, Sue Bond has now become synonymous with classy jazz. It’s no wonder when her crystal clear vocal talents and expert technique has her selecting material made famous by the likes of Anita O’Day, Marion Montgomery and Billy Holiday. After spending the most part of April touring around Europe, Sue is back and in great form and she will be performing at the Beerwah Hotel this Sunday, June 26 with jazz piano player, band leader, composer, accompanist and teacher John Reeves who graduated from the Royal College of Music in London in July 1999. Owen Newcombe is on double bass and drummer Geoff Proud whose career has taken him around the world (and then some). Special guest artist is Ian Edwards who is a top exponent of the saxophone, flute and clarinet Ian taught for many years at the CPIT Jazz School in New Zealand.

Alternative publishing with Judy Barrass Authors and writers interested in e-publishing can find out how to get started in sessions to be held at Sunshine Coast Libraries in June and July. Sunshine Coast artist and writer Judy Barrass will be letting local writers know just how easy it is to publish their works on the internet so people can read the books on e-book devices such as Kindle, Sony, Kobo and smart phones like the iPhone. Hour-long sessions will be held at eight of the Coast’s libraries, providing a crash course in the basics of how to format, convert, upload and sell e-books. The workshops will also cover print-on-demand books and selling through online distribution centres. Judy said the internet had opened up the world of publishing to everyone. “Authors are no longer restricted by the need for publishers and agents, or by the costs of printing multiple copies of their works,” she said. “Putting your work up for sale as an e-book is simple. No complex computer knowledge is required.” Judy does warn writers not to have high expectations of reaping big financial windfalls from their published works given basic marketing principles continue to apply. And unless writers are prepared to put in the hard work getting their work noticed and developing an audience, they’re unlikely to have many sales. Workshops will also touch on the basics of marketing on-line and how some successful authors have managed to create best sellers. “It’s lots of fun to publish a book. For many people that’s enough pleasure, and they are happy if their family and friends are able to have a copy. Others are interested in developing a career as a writer,” Judy said. The workshops will cater for both groups. These 60 minute sessions are free but bookings are essential. Sessions take place at Beerwah Library Wednesday, June 29, 2.00pm, 5439 2500, Maleny Library Friday, July 22, 10.00am, 5435 3100. www.gcnews.com.au

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church Hi everyone. I don’t have a witty story for you this week but a deep theological message to ponder. Hope you can catch my drift. Out of all the famous people that had some part in the shaping of history, the story of the man Jesus Christ is easily the most discussed, studied and debated of them all. Did you know that there is almost zero information recorded about his life between the ages of 12 to about 30? In fact there is really only one verse that sums up this period of nearly 20 years. In Luke 2:52 it says, ‘Jesus grew in wisdom, stature and in favour with God and man.’ This is a pretty basic summary for a big portion of his life. But I got to thinking whether or not this summary could be used for those same years of my life? (Now that I’m 30 this year.) (Yeah I know, a spring chicken with grey hair already!) Growing in wisdom. Am I continually seeking to learn by increasing my education and more importantly, learn wisdom that can only come from God as I interpret his word and relate it to my life’s experience? Growing in stature. Have I taken care of the body I been given so that it may last as long as it should? Growing in favour with men. Am I living life as a Christian in the 21st century in a way that is attractive to others, or am I more of a pain in the neck that can turn

people off the message of Christ? Lastly, have I grown in favour with God? You know, in a way, this one is the easiest of all the challenges we face in life. The Bible explains that getting God to love us is not the problem. In fact his love for humans exceeds anything we can imagine. To gain his favour or become acceptable in his sight however, we must allow his son Jesus Christ to take away the stain of sin from our lives. Just like a surgeon can’t allow anyone off the street into a sterilised operating theatre with dirty clothes, so we must recognise our failings and allow Christ to cleanse us from our ‘unrighteousness’ so we may enter the presence of God. This simple step of faith ensures we will be accepted by God now, and in our eternal life to come. There is a challenge however, as we try to figure out how we should live life now that we are saved by his grace, so that others may witness what we do and come to make the same decision to accept the gift of God’s son. A great philosopher once said, ‘Live your life so that the minister won’t have to lie at your funeral!’ I pray that these thoughts will help you with that. (Especially if I end up being your minister for that occasion!) See you in church.

REVERSE MORTGAGES - FOR RETIREES If you are aged 60 or over, ask your Smartline Adviser how a reverse mortgage could fund your lifestyle without selling the family home. It’s a common plight for seniors to find that although they are asset-rich, all of their money is tied up in their home. Reverse mortgages are designed to improve the living standards of seniors by providing cash for everyday living expenses and purchases, such as a new car or a holiday. ‘Applicants can now borrow up to 45 per cent of the value of www.gcnews.com.au

their home depending on their age,’ explains Teresa Harrison, Smartline Adviser. ‘Funds can be advanced in one payment on settlement or taken as needed. There are no repayments required over the life of the loan, with all interest fees and charges capitalised to the loan.’ You still retain full ownership of your property and can continue to live in it for as long as you wish. There is no set loan term and repayment of the loan is deferred until the property is sold, the borrowers are no

longer living in the house, or the borrowers have passed on. Lenders do apply strict conditions to reverse mortgages. Down & Dirty with Brownie

Euphorbia euphoria

For winter vividness in the garden, you just can’t beat the euphorbia group of plants. Their ‘flowers’ aren’t true flowers, but are large colourful modified leaves or bracts which surround the real flower – often a small and insignificant thing. At the moment, the best recognised member is Snowflake (Euphorbia leucocephala). It’s the shrub which is absolutely covered in white flowers. You can’t miss them as you drive around the streets in all of the towns in the Glasshouse Country region. Lots of people grow them – and why not? They brighten and cheer-up a winter garden which starts to look a bit drab. As the days get shorter, the plants are triggered into flowering. If you’ve got a street light out the front, or your bush is lit by a security light, you may find that it isn’t flowering as well as your neighbours. The extra light tricks them into not flowering as well. Move the plants somewhere else, and they’ll do much better. Another great looking plant at the moment is poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima). And there are many more to choose from now other than that old large growing single red variety. Thanks to the wonders of modern hybridisation techniques, we now have an amazing range of

brownie@gcnews.com.au

colours and forms available. There are whites, yellows, creams, apricots, pinks and intense reds. They grow as short, medium or tall shrubs, and so will suit any garden position. Their colour lasts all through winter and into spring. They can be cut as table flowers. Place the cut ends into hot water after cutting to clear out the latex. Grow them in full sun with good drainage for the best flowering results throughout winter. They’re pretty easy to grow yourself from cuttings. Find a friendly relative or neighbour and ask if you can take some 20-30cm long hardwood cuttings. Let them dry out for a week or so, then poke them down 10cm into pots with some propagation mix. Keep them moist but not too wet, as they’ll rot. Another popular euphorbia is Euphorbia millii – or Crown of Thorns. These are small semi-succulent sprawling plants with stout spines along their thickened stems. They have small but showy flowers, in red, pink, white and cream. Watch out for the sap in any euphorbia plant – as it can cause skin irritations.

GMAN Plant nursery clearance Due to a good growing season and our hard working volunteers, our nursery is overflowing! We need to clear our older stock to make way for new seedlings. These are large native tube stock which you can plant and forget about. For four days from Wednesday, June 22, all older stock will go out at 50 cents, with a bonus of 10 plants for every order of 50 plants. For a list of species available, please contact Gwen on 5493 0029.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Dog Rose Bauera rubioides The curiously named Dog Rose is one of South East Queensland’s most beautiful wildflowers. The Dog Rose makes a lovely addition to a native garden or blends in perfectly with a cottage garden. It produces gorgeous pink flowers (there is also a white flowering form) that are very showy. The shrub grows to approximately 2m x 2m. An annual prune will maintain a bushier shrub that produces more flowers. Best for full sun in a well drained position. If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Pulling out in front

The race for first place was certainly something to behold at the St Paul’s Lutheran Junior Primary Sports Day last week. The three houses, Archer, Gregor and Jeffreys, were locked in battle from almost the outset of the day, with every student eagerly participating, and a huge crowd of enthusiastic parents, grandparents, siblings and teachers loudly cheering on their teams. Even the weather was looking favourably on the competition, with a splendid winter’s day something of a surprise after the previous run of cold, wet and windy ones. The fun of ball games, bean bag games and team games was interspersed throughout the day with the hugely competitive tug-o-war, but it was the sprints and the relays in which both students and spectators really showed the house spirit. Cries of “Let’s go, Archer, let’s go!”, “Gregor! Gregor! Gregor!”, “Go Jeffreys, Go!” could be heard from the classrooms, as the contest really hotted up. In the end, only 16 points separated all three teams. Jeffreys scored 261 and Gregor managed 274, but Archer pulled out in front with just 4 points more, with 277 points. Deputy Principal Gilbert Lohe was extremely happy with how the day went. “The children really put in an excellent effort,” he said. “We all look forward to seeing how they’ll perform next year, with a competition this tight!”

Gregor House gave it their all, but in the end lost the day by only four points

Beerwah Bulldogs

Saturday, June 11 saw Ron Rix win the Bowls Bonanza on 32 points, with Bill Tumbridge runner-up on 29. In a close third, Chris Freshwater and Brian Fogarty tied on 28 points. Last Tuesday, our Ladies’ President, Millie Freshwater hosted 11 visiting teams from District Clubs for her ‘President’s at Home’ Day. The day included ‘spiders’ and ‘touchers’ and a game of 21 ends, followed by lunch. Congratulations to Margaret Lehmann, Anne Howard and Monika Duff who defeated Rae Farrell, Joan Wilson and Jan Lawson in a closely contested final of the 2011 Ladies’ Triples Club Competition on Wednesday. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Mac Townson and Tony Verdonck with 2 + 44. The runners-up on a count back were Clive Sinton and Kerry Capern who won the second game with 21 shots. The annual Hibiscus Retirement Resort Visit-In / State of Origin was played on Sunday. Sixty-four players contested the event with ‘Queenslanders’ playing ‘The Rest’. The Queenslanders retrieved the shield this year with a convincing 175 to 136 points win. The Club is running a Charity Day on Sunday, July 10, commencing at 1.00pm. Members are requested to support the day, which will include a fun afternoon of social bowls. Visiting bowlers are welcome to join us. All proceeds of the day will go to cancer research. Coming Events: Monthly 2 Bowl Triples, Monday, June 27 at 9.00am. Charity Day, in aid of Cancer Research, Sunday, July 10 at 1.00pm. Monthly Jackpot Triples, Wednesday, July 13 at 9.00am.

The Bulldogs travelled to Maroochydore on Saturday and after the first round games, were expecting some close tussles. Under 18’s started proceedings and once again ran into a much larger and physical team but battled well to go down 22 - 4 and will have the bye this weekend to regroup and have a final shot at claiming a semi final spot. Reserve Grade was looking to make it two on the trot against the Swans and just missed out by losing 16 - 14. A Grade missed a couple of early opportunities which cost them in the end by going down 12 - 8 against the team that shares the top spot on the ladder with three other teams, so we are very close to matching it in this very even competition. On the Junior Front, congratulations go out to three of our under 14 players, Brodie Oosen, Hayden Vapreda and Lachlan Brown who will be representing the Sunshine Coast Under 14b Team at the City/ Country Exchange Carnival this weekend at Kawana. A Grade Mdore –Coolum Swans – 12 – (Rick Duncan 2 – Tries)(Mitchell Hasted 2 – Goals)def Beerwah Bulldogs – 8 – (Daniel Grice 1, Daniel Kidd 1 – Tries)(Nil – Goals) Reserve Grade Mdore-Coolum Swans – 16 – (John Cazalet 1, Aaron Benz 1, Matt Sunderland 1 – Tries)(Paul Backhaus 2 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 14 – (Nat Flores 1, Adam Tedge 1, Sam Hurley 1 – Tries)(Mitch Jackson 1 – Goals) Under 18 Mdore-Coolum Swans – 22 – (Josh Buckland 1, Will Solway 2, Tim O’Leary 1 – Tries)(Josh Buckland 1, Tom McKee 1, Isaac Stains 1 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 4 – (Josh Kidd 1 – Tries)(Nil – Goals) The seniors have the bye this weekend followed by our next game against Nambour at Nambour on Sunday, July 3 which should be another good quality game. We look forward to seeing all the Bulldogs supporters come along and offer their support.

Hook, line and sinker!

A man with a bucket full of live fish was approached recently by a game warden in Queensland as he started to drive his boat away from a lake. The game warden asked the man, “may I see your fishing licence please?” “Naw, sir,” replied the fisherman. “I don’t need none of them there papers. These here are my pet fish.” “Pet fish?” “Yep. Once a week, I bring these here fish o’mine down to the lake and let ‘em swim ‘round for a while. Then when I whistle, they swim right back into my net and I take ‘em home.” “What a line of bull....you’re under arrest.”

“It’s the truth, Mr Gumment man. I’ll show ya! We do this all the time!” “WE do, now, do WE?” smirked the warden. “Prove it!” The redneck released the fish into the lake and stood and waited. After a few minutes, the warden said, “well?” “Well, what?” said the man. The warden asked, “when are you going to call them back?” “Call who back?” “The FISH,” replied the warden! “What fish?” asked the man. James Aitken, Mooloolah Valley
