hey say that "from little things big things grow" and, after twenty years, the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave is definitely a living, breathing example of that. Back in 1997 the event raised around $90,000, which was no doubt an encouraging start, but I can’t imagine the organisers would have expected it to have the incredible long-term success that it has. These days it has grown and expanded in such an incredible way that the Leukaemia Foundation has been able to dedicate millions of dollars to blood cancer research and much-needed support to those suffering with a blood cancer. These days there are so many other competing charity causes it is great to see that the event is still going strong. This week we have brought you just some of the stories of locals who have gone under the clippers or who will be losing their locks. On behalf of all of those who I know who have appreciated the support they have received from the Leukaemia Foundation over the years, I say thanks for the slightly mad but brave shavers who we might see walking around town in a beanie soon (well, if we ever get to have some autumn weather)! Local News Modern new council depot Sunshine Coast Council’s new Beerwah depot, which used materials and services from more than 20 local companies and council’s internal teams during construction to create a modern sustainably designed building, was officially opened last week. This new site, which replaces the aging Landsborough depot, is a base for council’s road maintenance, bridge construction and parks maintenance crews, who were involved in a collaborative design process to ensure the facility was suitable for each team. Mayor Mark Jamieson said, “It’s critical that our field staff have high quality, fit-for-purpose facilities to do their jobs effectively, deliver exceptional service to our community and work in a safe environment.” Council’s Infrastructure Services Director, Andrew Ryan, said the facility used some refurbished buildings to retain the character of the site, as well as new structures which all incorporate new technologies and security systems. The design pays tribute to the old timber buildings – two of the existing character-filled rooflines have been retained; new and refurbished sheds are cladded in manufactured weatherboard with timber trims; an old forestry truck shed has been retained; and the large seed drying shed has been

Hinterland Accounting Services Phone 5439 0188 refurbished and now serves as the works shed. “We have also maintained the original arboretum on the site, which is a garden featuring many rare and imported trees, to recognise the site’s history,” Andrew said. “The advancement of mobile devices and other technology means our field crews need to come back to the depot much less often than in the past, so this new facility is smaller than what has previously been required.” The new depot is an upgrade of the old forestry depot on Roys Road, Beerwah. The old Landsborough depot is being rehabilitated for future community use. Other design elements ensure that all storm water is harvested and treated for reuse for drinking, vehicle wash down and firefighting. Electronic access, alarms, lighting sensors and video surveillance cameras have been installed for tight security.

Being brave and shaving By Sonia Clark On Saturday April 1, three local mums supported by the team at All in One Fitness Beerwah have committed themselves to holding a World’s Greatest Shave event from 10.00am until noon. Event organiser Kat Thompson has been busy co-ordinating the fundraiser which will be held in the gym car park. As well as head shaving (courtesy of Reece's Artistic Hair Design (RAHD), the morning will feature a jumping castle, stalls, face painting, hair colouring, raffle prizes and more. The gym will also be hosting some specially discounted classes with all proceeds going towards the Leukaemia Foundation. The three ladies – Kat Thompson, Sarah Johnston and Cat Ryan – are all local mums whose children go to Landsborough State School and who feel strongly about making a difference. As well as raising funds, two of the mums are also planning to donate their hair to ‘Wigs for Kids’. While this is the first time that Sarah and Kat will be brave enough to have their heads shaved for the event, Cat has previously participated, having her locks chopped off around six years ago. “Many people I’ve known have been affected by cancer over the years and I’ve been wanting to do this for a couple of years now,” says Kat. “Having two young daughters, when I hear about children that struggle with cancer – it really touches my heart, so hopefully by donating my hair for Wigs for Kids I can help make a small difference.” With long hair down past her waist, Kat is

excited about having her head shaved and supporting the fundraiser though admits that, although she will find it liberating, she might cry! Sarah has recently had a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) cut out from her head and so is very aware of the dangers of not wearing a hat in our climate and also understands how self conscious people can feel especially after surgery. “This will be the longest wait I’ve had for a haircut!” she says. “Having my hair totally shaved off is a little daunting but as well as supporting the fundraiser, it will give me a chance to have my hair grow back all one length after having the surgery. Having the other mums involved as well really helps.” The ladies would love to see plenty of locals come along on the day to support them. Or to donate before the day, go to www. worldsgreatestshave.com and search via the ladies’ names. If you would like to donate some raffle items, have a stall, or find out more, please contact Kat on 0403 548 908.

MP goes full shave

Local Federal MP Andrew Wallace joined many other locals and had his head shaved in support of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Mr Wallace said, "Two of my own children have suffered with serious ill health, and we all know someone who has been touched by cancer. “When I heard about all of the people who were shaving their heads last Friday for this important cause, I felt like I had to give it a go and try to do something to help support a charity that does so much for Australians in need." Last week he set himself a goal of raising $1000.00 and by Friday afternoon he was close to raising $2500.00 and was happy to build on that total. “I am particularly looking forward to getting down to Canberra next week with my shiny head, and trying to persuade some of my fellow MPs to kick the tin!” Mr Wallace said.

Shaved or waxed for a Cure Contributed by Sandy Johnson

Glasshouse Christian College has been participating in Leukaemia Foundation’s Shave for a Cure for many years, but this year had the biggest turnout yet. The event is an initiative of the Student Voice Council which investigates ideas and then runs the fundraiser themselves. Five brave students raised money to have their heads shaved and lined up with various degrees of anticipation. Anna Rivett was the only girl and she gave up her long golden locks for her grandmother, Sandy, who has leukaemia and was there on the day to shave Anna. You could see how much this meant to the two of them by the looks on their faces as they shared this special moment. That was the serious part of the event – where students (especially Anna) made huge sacrifices

for the cause. The male teachers who lined up to be waxed only thought they were making a big sacrifice! However, An by the looks of agony grana Rivett with her ndmother Sandy Fergus on and cries of pain, before the shave maybe they did. Photo by Brianna Bottri ll The students supported the waxing with huge cheers, holding back the loudest for their Principal Mike Curtis. So far the students have exceeded their $1000.00 goal by $700.00, but they are hoping for more donations before the deadline of June 30. If you would like to support these brave students and help find a cure for leukaemia you can visit www.bit.do/gccshave

What a little champ

Proud mum Christina Stansfield contacted us about her very brave daughter Haydyn who has just turned nine and who chose along with two others to have their hair shaved for the World's Greatest Shave event held at Glass House Mountains State School. Christina’s good friend and police officer Donna has Leukaemia and has lost her hair during treatment. So Haydyn was keen to do something to show her support for Donna, and with her dad passing away from cancer early last year, she decided this was a good way to raise funds to find a cure and also a way to honour her dad’s memory. Haydyn had set herself of fundraising goal of

$2,000.00, however she has already raised $3,200.00 – and if you would like to support her efforts you can go to her page http:// my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/haydynstansfield

New Caloundra electoral boundaries Following on our March 8 edition, where we detailed the changes to the electorate of Glass House (soon to be called Tibrogargan), this week we turn our focus to the State seat of Caloundra. The seat of Caloundra (held by Mark McArdle) retracts in size to reflect new and continuing growth in the coastal suburbs. Currently, the electorate has 35,538 voters, with the proposed boundary changes dropping that to 31,624. According to the Commission’s report, the main changes are listed as: 1. Gains part of the Landsborough suburb in the west from the current electorate of Glass House; 2. Transfers Diamond Valley, MooIoolah Valley and parts of the Bald Knob and Landsborough suburb to Tibrogargan; 3. Transfers the balance of the Currimundi locality to Kawana; and 4. Transfers the Bribie Island North suburb to Pumicestone. Further afield, the Sunshine Coast’s ‘pure blue’ Conservative makeup may be in for a shake down at the next election. Peter Wellington (Nicklin) is not contesting the election, leaving the way for a clean slate field. Sunshine Coast Councillor Greg Rogerson has indicated he will likely nominate, and the LNP would see the seat as theirs for the retaking. Steve Dickson (Buderim) jumped from LNP to One Nation, throwing that electorate into bitter turmoil and setting up a pitched battle in one of the safest LNP seats in Queensland.

The new seat of Ninderry – if included in the election – has already drawn a declaration from Councillor Jason O'Pray that he will run. Again the LNP would see this Coolum-centred seat as very winnable. The X-factor at the election will be the effect that One Nation has on local voting preferences. And with compulsory preferential voting back (that is you have to number every box), the crucial decision may be who you put last rather than who you put first. To see the proposed electoral maps for Caloundra (and for Tibrogargan), along with the current maps to compare them with, go to www.gcnew. com.au and go to Read>Hot Off The Press.

Revolutionary water cleaning technology Water resources on a global scale are increasingly becoming polluted and when this occurs water becomes unsuitable for reuse unless recovered and suitably treated. Polluted water that makes its way into the environment often results in unsafe, harmful, sometimes toxic waste that is harmful to all forms of life, our food chain and the long term impacts are usually wide spread. Allan Lear, the Director and Innovator for Water4use and owner of Transportable Shade Sheds at Landsborough, has been a business owner for more than twenty five years including developing successful innovation patents that underpin his well known multi award winning company. Allan’s other experience includes mechanical engineering and design innovations within the oil and gas industry which has lead to identifying the need for waste water technologies and the huge environmental and financial cost savings that can be made around the world. Allan believes that the research and development team he leads has created a highly effective mobile water cleaning unit using the principles of renew, recycle and reuse. Allan said the contamination of water that you see across the globe is created from so many sources such as waste water created from agricultural fertilizer run off, mine site waste water, industrial and commercial wash downs, retention dam flooding and building site run off to name a few.

The Water4use mobile treatment unit has since been further developed and is aimed at targeting onsite water recycling and reuse across most commercial industries. “The massive cost, inconvenience and inefficiency of moving large volumes of waste water across the country doesn’t make sense environmentally or financially,” Allan said. The Water4reuse technology unit is currently seeking an International Patent and therefore can't be described in detail, but in general terms the technology involves utilising filter materials in combinations and processes that are unique and truly revolutionary. The mobile onsite filtration units will be rolled out to capitalise on the highest number of waste water reuse alternatives that meet environmental recycling guidelines. “The Water4use testing carried out to date shows extremely positive results that were well beyond expectations,” Allan said. “The versatility and mobility of the 250 kg, 1.5m x 1.5m Water4use reuse mobile units means they can be containerised and sent across the globe. “The Water4use technology really is groundbreaking and something that I'm extremely optimistic about because it is so effective, very mobile and will change the face of waste water management for just about every industry worldwide,” Allan said.

20 years of patchworking

This month The Patchwork Angel at Forest Glen celebrates their 20th birthday of trade operating from the same premises. Patchwork Angel sells fabrics and craft supplies both locally through their retail store and by mail order worldwide, with some of their customers living as far away as Norway. They hold classes in store and lots of Friendship groups which raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research. Business owner Penny said, “It is amazing how many problems get solved through our tea and tears in these friendship groups, as well as strong friendships formed.” Penny and Chuck Hornbuckle (pictured left), who took over the Patchwork Angel in 2006, were pleased to be able to celebrate with a very tasty cake, with their regular customers known as ‘Loyal Angels’.

Update with Spencer Shaw Three months into the 2017 already and it’s busy as ever for your Maleny Commerce volunteer management committee and the various events and activities we’re running with. To kick of the year, we have engaged with our members and friends through our online Business Survey to get the information we need to produce our next Strategic Business Plan that will help guide our activities for the next three years. Strong issues as always include (you guessed it) parking, but also NBN, Signage, Marketing and Professional Development. Our last Networking Breakfast was well attended at Spicers Tamarind with a presentation by David Furze of Launch Commercial Solutions discussing margins. In addition, we had updates from Amanda Goody, Sunshine Coast Council on their new Lift Program and other assistance to businesses, our Federal and State Parliamentarians Andrew Wallace and Andrew Powell, Nicole Hilton discussing the proposed Maleny Month she has negotiated for our members with Sunshine FM 104.9, and Karen Shaw facilitating a brief feedback session. Thank you to Ryan and the team at Spicers Tamarind for a great breakfast and venue. Our next networking Breakfast is on April 11 and we will have Dr Sally Ernst from Cyber Security Networks with a timely talk on Cyber Security for small businesses. For more information visit our website www.malenycommerce.org.au Coming up soon for its second year is The Glassies, our popular Small Business Awards initiated by Andrew Powell and partnered by chambers within his electorate. We look forward to again promoting our local businesses through this event. Before saying bye for this month, I’d just like to say thank you to our dynamic committee for their commitment to representing and improving business in Maleny over the upcoming year. As president, it’s great to head a group of business people working to promote not only business but the wellbeing of our wider community, again thank you. Keep up the good business, Maleny. The Material Change of Use application for 141 Frizzo Road, which is just to the north of the Aussie World complex and only 500m from the existing Aussie World Garage, aims to change the current rural zoning use to allow for the construction of a service centre – incorporating a petrol station and fast food outlet with a drive-through. The 1.2 hectare site will front what will become the western service road between Steve Irwin Way and Sippy Downs, but will not have direct highway access. No information has been given as to which service station and fast food companies will be operating from the site. In a pre-lodgement meeting with a Council officer, significant issues and concerns were

raised resulting from the nature, scale and location of the proposed development. Council staff highlighted conflicts with the rural zoning code, scenic amenity overlay code, regional infrastructure overlay code, service station code and tourism zone code, with their conclusions stating, “…Officers believe that the proposed use on this site is more on the inconsistent side…” Steve Amos, owner of Aussie World Garage, is understandable cautious of the news. “I am aware of the application submitted to Council,” he said. “And I’ll be carefully assessing the implications for the local area, our business and our customers before taking any further action.” Residents can read more about the proposal and how to make submissions at www.pdonline. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for MCU17/0042.

Record macadamia crops predicted Australia is set to once again be the world’s largest macadamia producer this year, and local macadamia growers gathered together recently to learn how the industry intends to position itself for the future. Representatives from the peak industry body, the Australian Macadamia Society (AMS), including CEO Jolyon Burnett, Market Development Manager Lynne Ziehlke and Productivity Development Manager Robbie Commens, as well as Horticulture Innovation Australia, were at Glass House Mountains last week for the industry’s MacGroup workshops. Production is significantly increasing for many of the tree nuts marketed around the world, including macadamias. Recently the AMS announced that the 2017 Australian macadamia crop is forecast to reach 54,000 tonnes in-shell at 10% moisture (50,500 tonnes at 3.5% moisture) – representing a fourth consecutive year of steady growth for the industry. This represents a 4% increase on the record 2016 crop. Australian macadamia production has been steadily growing since 2014, thanks largely to the sustained investment into productivity initiatives by Australian macadamia growers.

Opportunity to seek a better lifestyle!

No matter what industry you work in, there are always opportunities out there to seek a better lifestyle for you and your family, earn additional revenue and help secure your future. Small business owner Steve Nyberg is a great example of someone wanting an additional small business venture that will fit in around his current business. By becoming a Saver6.com small business owner reselling Transportable Shade Shed products, Steve enjoys the autonomy of his own business confident that he will receive full assistance by the team at Transportable Shade Sheds to answer questions and provide product information support if required. This confidence is also backed up by the extensive online marketing, social media and mentoring platform Saver6.com that provides small business owners with a comprehensive support package similar to what you would get if you joined a franchise operation, but without the restrictive fees and requirements involved in that type of business model. As a Transportable Shade Shed Business owner – you are your own boss! Steve already runs a successful property services and maintenance business in Darwin which he has owned since 2001. He was very impressed with the simplicity of the small business model presented by Transportable Shade Sheds combined with the exceptional product support. He could also see a wealth of opportunity for the comprehensive range of products in the previously untapped Northern Territory market. Open to additional revenue opportunities, Steve did his research before making the decision to become a reseller. In establishing Top End Shade Sheds, he was also impressed with the high quality of the Australian steel used, as well as the versatility of the Australian-designed products and the fact that the shade sheds are all Australian manufactured. “I am excited to have become a reseller, and I can see huge potential to sell in this region,” says Steve. “I like that you are well supported without it being a franchise. The team at Transportable Shade Sheds are always there to offer support if I ever need it and Saver6.com have also been great and have really helped out with setting up my social media pages and marketing my business. I’ve only just finalised my reseller contract and already they have generated interested leads which is awesome!” Steve hopes to eventually have Top End Shade Sheds takeover from his current maintenance business and is confident that the quality range of products coupled with a price point that is very reasonable will be an extremely viable business venture. From the moment he decided to become a Transportable Shade Shed Small Business, the entire process has been completely hassle free and easy. Everything has flowed and the support from both the team at Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com has been great. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Darwin area please contact Steve at Top End Shade Sheds on 0429 980 742. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area, or are keen to be your own boss – or look at business options that may work well with your current industry – then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.

Women of many achievements About twenty years ago at an International Zonta Convention, members chose a yellow rose to be their symbol of peace and harmony and individual Zontians were encouraged to give a Zonta Rose on International Women’s Day to a woman they admire. However the Zonta Club of the Blackall Range’s Publicity Officer, Judith Ross-Smith Pam Marsden with Dianne Wilson, explained on March 8 that, Alison Huth and Judith Ross-Smith "Because there are so many women we admire and we couldn’t give a yellow rose to all of them, we on the Blackall Range came up with a special idea for this day with recognising one of the many local women whose contribution to the community has touched the lives of others. "This year is the second year our local Zonta group have held their Dusk on the Deck event to announce their Women of Achievement award. "This year’s award winner was Dianne Wilson. Di's extraordinary achievements include being a foster parent to 163 children over the past 37 years, and she was presented with her award from the inaugural winner Pam Marsden." Zonta President Alison Huth said, "Di is one of those amazing people who is genuinely modest. She really believes that everyone would do the same as she does. There is no doubt at all that Di deserves our Zonta 2017 Women of Achievement Award." Approximately 37 years ago, as a mother of two primary school children, Di was asked by the Department of Child Safety if she would consider fostering young children. At the time her response was, “what is fostering?” These days, after fostering 163 children, Di clearly has a much better idea than most what is involved, as during the 37 years, there has not been one day that has gone by without foster children being part of their family. Ten of the foster children, who mostly joined the family within weeks of their birth, have been permanent family members, with seven still living at home, including one primary school student, four in high school and two adults. Diane was such a humble recipient who seemed surprised by the fuss, suggesting that what they do is just what others would do, which seemed to surprise many of the audience on the night. Thanks on the night went to the sponsors of the event, Maleny Optical, Montville Real Estate, Lember and Williams Law and Maleny Physiotherapy.

Elijah – choral masterpiece comes to Maleny

The Maleny Singers are well known for their productions of operettas and Gilbert & Sullivan, but have yet to venture into the world of oratorio. In April, they will perform an abridged version of the great Mendelssohn work – Elijah. The work tells the story of this larger than life Old Testament prophet, and features some of the greatest music that Mendelssohn ever wrote, with wonderful performances from our own popular soloists – Tony Glazebrook (Elijah), Colin Dunn (Obadiah), Evalee Sharples (The Widow), Viera Keogh (The Angel), and Jenny Keys (Jezabel). Famous arias, duets, trios and choral items, will be accompanied by Janet Brewer on the keyboard, and Anne Bowyer on cello, each known in the area as superb musicians. The performance will be conducted by Musical Director Margaret Taylor. We strongly encourage all fans of classical choral music to come along to enjoy this masterpiece, and to support us. If you have never experienced music of this kind, give yourself a treat and sample some of the best of this wonderful oratorio. The performances are held on Friday, April 7 at 7.00pm and Saturday, April 8 at 2.30pm at the Uniting Church of Maleny, Landsborough Road. Tickets at $15.00 are sold at the Maleny information office, www. trybooking/261973, or at the door. Schoolchildren free. There will be a short Colin Dunn, Margaret Taylor, Evalee Sharples, interval with refreshment. Tony Glazebrook, Viera Keogh

Why feet are different You rely on your feet every day, and expect them to work – but when they are sore and painful, most people don’t know what to do or how to make them better. The foot is designed to absorb the shock from the ground. It also balances the rest of your body when you walk – so the 26 bones in the foot and the hundreds of nerves, muscles and tendons are the lifting force of your body. It is expected that during your life your feet will get injured from all this stress, and it is our job to help you heal this pain. Feet can get injured on a daily basis just due to walking over uneven ground or standing on them for too long.

www.gcnews.com.au

Stress fractures are common in the metatarsals, and tendon tears are common around the heel and at the bottom of the foot where your toes meet your arch. Plantar Fasciitis, or heel pain, is a condition we see every day in the clinic, and can be related to your arch rolling inward too far creating a strain on the soft tissue structures around the heel. If you are standing on your feet for too long, the arch of your foot fatigues, making your arch drop or flatten. This in turn pulls the muscles and tendons that attach to the heel and inflammation occurs. Treatment of this may include rest, ice therapy, and supportive footwear which can minimise the pain within a few weeks. However specific stretches, strapping, ultrasound as well as orthotic therapy (custom innersoles) are needed if the pain does not resolve. An accurate diagnosis is essential so you can be treated correctly the first time, saving money and stress.

Hi, I’m Nathan Jackson who moved up from Melbourne to work in the team at Stepping Out Podiatry. As an experienced Podiatrist, I can provide you exceptional service and diagnostic skills and I have one goal in mind for you: Get you Nathan Jackson back on your feet fast! You will be glad you called me at Stepping Out Podiatry – your feet will be too!

Pillowcases bring comfort to little patients By Lea Parkes Recently our State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell met a wonderfully dedicated Maleny couple, Neil Andison and Jane Williamson, through the ‘Local Hero’ Grants that he offers to individuals and community groups who need funds to continue their work. Neil explains that when his granddaughter Brittany was just seven months old, she was diagnosed with a rare Germ Cell Tumour. She had treatment for three years and the family were advised that her chance of surviving it was 0.01%. However these days Brittany is now a dynamic, motivated and enthusiastic 20 year old who likes to live life to the full, and while she still has health battles, her grandfather describes her as someone with a strong, positive outlook on life. When Brittany was at high school and doing Home Economics the teacher asked the students if they would like to use the sewing skills they would be learning to do some sort of fundraising idea, which was when 'Pillowcases for Oncology Kids' was born. Britanny has remembered the pillow and pillowcase that she took to Westmead Hospital. All the time when she was being treated, the navy blue pillowcase with tiny red cherries on it had brought her comfort during a very trying time. What started out as a small pillowcase drive to

collect / create handmade pillowcases to provide other kids facing their own battles has turned into a permanent not for profit foundation which Brittany and her mum Tabitha have been involved with since setting it up in 2012. To date the organisation has delivered over 25,000 pillowcases Australia wide and they are about to also sent around 5,000 internationally to Scotland, South Africa and USA. Over the past five years, Neil and Jane have been very involved in organising local participation in the project and now the couple, who both work full-time, have taken on the overall co-ordination role of the Foundation from their home in Maleny. Neil, who is a very proud grandfather, is a very determined fella and, in keeping with Jane's description of him as someone who is hard to say no to, he has already managed to form some beneficial partnerships and gain strong support from local businesses, including Paul and Diana Wilson and their team at Hinterland Commercial Laundry in Maleny who do a great job in washing and pressing all of the pillowcases ready for packaging in cellophane bags. Neil and Jane are determined to continue the great work, and are keen to encourage others locally and from across the country to get involved, so no doubt you will be hearing plenty more about the Foundation in the coming years. So what can you do to help support them?

‘Pip

Pollie’

Jane and Neil show some of the quirky patterned pillowcases that to Andrew Powell If you are able to sew, then why not get your creative side happening and make a 100% cotton standard-size pillowcase, without embroidery and applique on the sleeping surface. Or, if you have a pile of fabrics that you no longer need that would be suitable, how about donating them to the cause? To find out more about the foundation you can check out their Facebook page: Pillowcases4oncologykids or you can email Neil or Jane on karadise1@hotmail.com The team in Andrew Powell’s office in Maple Street at Maleny are happy to be a drop off point for Neil and Jane, and if anyone from Glasshouse Country would like to support them, you can drop items in to the GC&M News Office at 16 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains.

Silent movie classic Economist, author, financial educator and Maleny local Jodie Nolan was recently the guest speaker at the Maleny Hotel for their International Women’s Day lunch. Jodie’s mum and dad, Mary and Denny McIver, were pleased to be there on the day to listen to Jodie share her experiences with the group. Many of you may recognise Mary from Baker Robinson Lawyers in Maleny.

Mary and Denny McIver with daughter Jodie Nolan Mary said she and Denny are very proud of all that Jodie has achieved and stands for. “I think education of women to empower themselves to make good decisions and not necessarily be reliant upon the men in their life, is a wonderful contribution to society,” Mary said. For those not able to hear Jodie speak on the day, she has kindly donated four copies of her book, ‘Surviving the Storm – How to start with nothing and make millions’ to give away to four lucky readers. To win a copy, simply like this competition post (and maybe like us too!) on our Facebook page. The winners will be drawn on Monday, March 27 at 4.00pm and will be notified via Facebook. The books will be available for collection at the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News office.

The original 1920 production of ‘On Our Selection’ is the main feature at Peachester History Committee’s old-time film evening on Friday night, March 24. This version captures the spirit of the original stories by Steele Rudd – celebrating the ups and downs of life for the ‘Aussie battler’ on a country selection. Through membership of the National Film and Sound Archive, PHC is able to borrow from their extensive collection of Australian film. To complete the program, there will be a selection of newsreels from the 1930s, and a Buster Keaton short 'The Scarecrow'. Both silent films have onscreen intertitles and a musical soundtrack. The film evening is at Peachester Hall, with dinner starting at 6.00pm. In keeping with the theme, the menu will consist of pies and vegies, followed by dessert, tea and coffee. Tickets cost $15.00 for adults and $6.00 for children. Bookings by Wednesday, March 22 please, to Jan on 5494 2301or Helen on 5494 9557.

Gardner's Falls to get some action Sunshine Coast Councillor Jenny McKay wants to see some change from Council with regards to the management of Gardner's Falls following recent incidences of anti-social behaviour and abuse of native wildlife at the popular reserve. “It has been drawn to my attention by local residents and tourism providers that the lovely Gardner's Falls, Maleny – a well-known tourism spot in the hinterland – is in a very run-down and unmaintained state,” Cr McKay reports. “Unfortunately, due to its popularity it has become over-loved and, as a result, a number of incidents have occurred that have caused public safety concerns. “There is public concern that the area is being used for overnight camping, encouraging drinking and resulting in broken bottles, and that rubbish and other waste is being left onsite. This situation brings additional concerns with parking and providing a safe entry for emergency vehicles.” As a result, Cr McKay will table a notified motion at the next Council meeting, this Thursday, March 23, requesting that the Council CEO report back at the June meeting on a number of matters. Cr McKay asks that consideration be given to: improving access for emergency vehicles; examining the closure of the parking area at night; and creating a management plan for the site which will restrict ongoing anti-social behaviour, enabling Council to meet its duty of care. “These activities, coupled with the dual state and local government responsibility, requires that a report come before council to address and manage these issues,” explains Cr McKay. “As winter is approaching, this is an ideal time to address the issues, as there is less public use of the reserve.”

Steve and Margaret Royal after their induction to the Lions organisation

Tanya Ellison has joined the team at Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (MRWL) to coordinate the recently established Subtropical Lowland Rainforest Project. Tanya graduated from the University of New England with a Bachelor of Science. She has since obtained a Graduate Certificate in Natural Resources and has worked in various areas of environmental research for the past 10 years. She is passionate about the natural environment, sustainability and human / nature interactions and, looking forward, the prospect of being able to make a positive difference to our local environment through the Subtropical Lowland Rainforest Project. On her first day, Tanya commented, “It’s exciting to be part of MRWL and involved in a project with so many agencies all working together with a common goal. I am looking forward to making a difference to our beautiful, endangered Subtropical Lowland Rainforest.”

Contributed by Bob Banner The Beerwah Lions Dinner Meeting for March was held at Club Glass House where the members present paid tribute to the memory of Lions lady Marie Crocombe, who had been a highly esteemed part of the Lions family. The club plans to hold a fundraiser to raise money to support chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) research in Marie’s memory. The club will be running a barbeque at Bunnings at Caloundra with the funds raised by this event to be donated to the Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. On the night of the dinner meeting, two respected locals, Steve and Margaret Royal were inducted into Lions, with the ceremony being conducted by Lion Justin Neubecker.

Living - Arts

Open Studio Trail with Co-ordinator Judi Parkinson

Art fundraiser for Ebenezer Child Care Trust 'Art for African Orphans’ is a sale of Hinterland artist Julie Manfields’ works, being held at the Garden Café’s Gallery, on Mountain View Road, Maleny from April 1 through to April 23. All proceeds from the sale of her works will be donated to the Ebenezer Child Care Trust in Livingstone, Zambia, which manages an orphanage, school and farm. Julie’s life has always revolved around art and creativity and she has spent many years of her professional life working interstate in the fashion design industry. Now her focus revolves around the simple enjoyment of art and painting. While Julie has produced works in oil and pastel, her medium of choice is acrylic. Rural animal scenes in pen and wash also hold a real fascination for the artist, as do landscapes, seascapes, animal and figure studies and portraiture. Having previously resided for some time in country Victoria, Julie continues to be drawn back to the tonal beauty of autumn

scenes – and the memories of those magical vistas still provide ongoing inspiration. Living in the Hinterland affords a special appreciation of the unique beauty of the region and Julie is now particularly inspired to interpret Hinterland, rural and coastal scenes. For more information about the exhibition contact Lenore on 5429 6194 or email ric1945len@yahoo.com.au

Fully Equipped Studio Certified & Experienced Teachers www.gcnews.com.au

Introducing Amanda Gurr Amanda Gurr is a local who has been with Glass House Early Education Centre for ten years. With a diploma from the Australian Institute of Early Childhood Studies, she particularly loves the

supportive ‘family like’ environment created through working with the teaching and supervising staff, as well as the relationships she has built up over the years with the children and their families. “We have a great relationship with all our families here – and coming to work is just like coming home to a ‘second family’, all the staff here are just lovely!” says Amanda. Amanda also appreciates working in a close knit small town environment. She loves that when she’s out and about everyone stops to say hello and she really enjoys seeing the friendly faces of the kids and their families that she has met over the years and that everyone stops and has a chat. Over the last 10 years, Amanda has worked with children in every room at the Centre and she counts herself fortunate to have seen many of the children she knows transition from nursery all the way through to after school care programs. As Education Leader for the centre, Amanda attends external training to enrich the delivery of learning programs for the children, and is involved with passing this knowledge onto staff members. Currently she is lead educator in the toddler room and loves how interactive and engaging this age group is. “The kids love to explore and it’s wonderful to see them develop their sensory and gross motor skills – it’s lovely to be part of their learning journey,” she says.

Centre News Centre coordinator Ange Hardey and the team are thrilled to be implementing a brand new program called ‘Vege for Fun’ as part of their commitment to healthy eating and their continual promotion of healthy lifestyles. The intensive six week program immerses the children in all aspects of learning about vegetables … from planting seeds through to preparing ingredients to take home and cooking. Taking a ‘paddock to plate’ approach to food, the children from the school ready room are introduced to three new vegetables each week within a particular type group (such as fruiting vegetables, leafy vegetables, root vegetables etc.) and each day they enjoy various activities to allow them to develop new skills and experiences. As well as being a very interactive way to learn about vegetables, the children are also developing practical skills … like how to plant seeds, wash vegetables, how to safely use a knife and how to follow a recipe. The children also learn about the market to kitchen process and have a cooking demonstration day where they get to learn a recipe at the centre, prepare the vegetables and take them home to share with their family.

The Fencer

Live Celtic music at Mapleton

‘The Fencer’, a film from Finland about an Estonian fencing master who risked political danger from the KGB to help his legion of young students achieve international recognition, is the Maleny Film Society’s selection for Saturday, March 25 in the Maleny Community Centre. Originally titled ‘Miekkailija’, and presented with English subtitles, this film is based on the true story of Estonian fencing champion Endel Nelis and stars writer/actor Mart Avandi, supported by Lembit Upsak, who will be recognised from the film ‘Tangerines’, previously screened in Maleny. Direction is by Klaus Haro. This inspirational story involving a school of eager young Estonian fencers has been classified PG (for 12 years plus) by the Australian Council for Children’s Media and TV. Dinner catered by Wild Rocket begins at 6.00pm, with the film at 7.15pm. There will be a drinks bar and a tea and coffee stand with homemade slices. Members of the MFS may pre-book online or via the Maleny information Centre. Details re membership can be found at www.malenyfilmsociety.info

Get set for a night of intense energy, beautiful harmonies and driving dance rhythms next month, when well known Celtic band Barleyshakes launches the ‘Live Music Locally’ program at the Mapleton Hall. Brewed in Ireland and distilled in Australia, the Barleyshakes are adored throughout Australia and beyond for their ‘bent’ Irish sound, earning them the Queensland Music Award for World Music. Ever since their inception in the 90s in Dublin, the Barleyshakes have been turning heads as they inject new life into Irish music, while honouring past tradition. Their live shows have taken them around the globe and they continue to take audiences on a joy-filled ride wherever they perform. Fiddles, flutes, tin whistle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, vocals, bass, bodhran, and drums create their truly wonderful Celtic sound, and they have shared the stage with Lunasa, Metallica, Kila, Joe Cocker, Sharon Shannon, Altan, and Grada, to name a few. Barleyshakes’ performance will be the inaugural event in this year’s music program at the Mapleton Hall. ‘Live Music Locally’ is an initiative of the MH Folk, a group of volunteers who are working under the auspices of the Mapleton Hall Trust. The group is developing an ongoing program of live music performances at the iconic hall, aimed at both bringing entertainment to locals, and supporting live artists. The hall has wonderful acoustics and is a great venue for live bands. Funds raised go toward its upkeep. So join the MH Folk on Friday, April 7, at 6.30pm for Barleyshakes’ 7.00pm performance. For more information or to book online, visit www. mapletonhall.org Adults, $22.00, Concession $17.00. Kids under 14 are free. Food and refreshments are on sale, and the evening is BYO. Don’t miss this show, and live music locally!

Theatre From The Fringe to Maleny Professor Peter Lavery from the Maleny Arts Council has just returned from the Adelaide Fringe Festival were he saw the performance of 'Eleanor’s Story, An American Girl in Hitler’s Germany'. With the show about to be performed in Maleny on Sunday, March 22 we thought readers would be interested in Peter’s review of the show. 'Eleanor’s Story: An American Girl in Hitler’s Germany', is the true story of Eleanor Gartner, performed by her Professor Peter granddaughter Ingrid Gartner. In 1939, at nine years La very old, Eleanor and her family left New York on the SS Hamburg bound for Germany. A new job and a secure financial future awaited her father in Berlin. Half-way across the Atlantic, Hitler declared war on Poland and return to America became impossible. This is a coming of age story where the innocence and optimism of youth is tested by the horrors of war. From the discrimination against the outsider at school, to nightly bombing raids and Russian occupation, we are drawn into Eleanor’s story and to the final triumph of the human spirit. Projected images from wartime Berlin reinforce the factual nature of this unfolding narrative, and Ingrid’s strong performance brings to life not only her grandmother but the other members of her family who live through this. Like other successful dramas, the fresh eyes of 'Eleanor’s Story' open a new window on familiar territory. I saw the show in a full house that was spellbound by the journey and gave a standing ovation. 'Eleanor’s Story, An American Girl in Hitler’s Germany', is presented by the Maleny Arts Council and performs at the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday, March 26 at 2.00pm. Tickets can be purchased through their website 20

Skippy Park

Once again we see Beerwah getting more money spent on a sign. I hate to think what cost that will be? Cr Baberowski, have you had a look at Skippy Park lately? It is a family park with no shade areas. What's it cost for a few picnic tables that are covered and also some gym equipment for exercising? I don't think that's too much to ask for. Gwen Landsborough Barber

Good use of money?

I read with interest the article in the March 15 edition of GC&M News about Councillor Baberowski and his confirmation of the ‘Entry Statement’ for Beerwah. He is reported as saying that it has been a long time coming but will be worth the wait. I am sure that I speak on behalf of a lot of Mooloolah Valley residents who will be disappointed to know that he wasn’t referring to the continuing rehabilitation of Glenview Road! Seriously, the rather large construction that is pictured looks expensive. How much does it cost? Where did the money come from? Wouldn’t the money be better spent on making some of our roads safer? Brad Boustead Glenview

Marriage truth

I write in support of Linda from Beerwah on the subject of marriage. Marriage is for the union of man and woman and the bringing up of children by both sexes. Being one of the older generation and one who had a happy marriage, today’s news gives the impression that Australia is going backwards. We have been priced out of the world markets by successive governments and now we have this push to lower our moral standards. If an Australian vote by all adults allowed the change to the marriage act I would accept the decision, but I would not like it. On religious grounds I cannot accept that there are grounds for a change. Marriage is between a man and a woman, hopefully for life. In my case it took death to separate us. I expect our Federal Member Andrew Wallace to uphold the current definition of marriage. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

School News Year 5 and 6 camp

Contributed by Siarah, Year 5 During February Glenview State School Years 5 and 6 students went to Currimundi Recreation Centre for camp. The activities for the Year 5s were based on the theme ‘Unite’ and included circus skills, team challenges, beach games, fishing, body boarding, high ropes and the giant swing. The Year 6s activities were based on the words ‘Stand Up’ and they did rock climbing, caving, archery, team challenges, alpine rescue, and catapults. Everyone enjoyed the activities and the pool party on the first night. The accommodation Noa h B hanging around at was great with six beds in each cabin. We school camp had the best accommodation possible! We all enjoyed camp very much and can’t wait till next year!

Bullying. No Way! Friday March 17 was National Day Against Bullying and Violence. At Landsborough State School, the School Chaplain, Linda Whysall, led the students in learning about bullying and how we can prevent it at school. The message was loud and clear – Bullying. No Way! Staff and students stood united and wore orange to show their support for the campaign. There were numerous activities on the day including face painting, a colouring-in competition and discussions to help reinforce the message that bullying is not okay at any time. Each class was encouraged to decorate their classroom with the ‘Bullying. No Way!’ message. The winning class was 2C who will be rewarded with an ice-cream sundae party.

Cancel the Adani mine

The Palazczuk Government’s commitment to solar and wind power is illustrated by its support for large-scale renewable energy development in the State for large solar projects totalling almost 560MW of new generation capacity near Collinsville, Oakley, Longreach and Kingaroy. These investments total nearly $700 million investment in clean and cheaper energy for Queensland, as well as providing clean, green jobs. They will contribute towards Queensland's 5200MW of large scale solar PV capacity by 2030 to meet the Government’s renewable energy targets. International companies like Adani are investing in Queensland solar farms, and doing so because of Queensland’s sunshine resources, great infrastructure and a forward looking Government. With all these renewable energy initiatives underway, it is unfathomable that Palazczuk and her government continue to lead Queensland up the garden path with her commitment to the Adani coal mine development. And spending the taxpayer dollar to achieve it. How else was the junket to India paid for? She and her government appear to be working their backsides off to ensure the Adani mine is started, which seems increasingly reprehensible given the direct personal benefit of $2-3 billion dollars the Adani family would eventually directly profit from the mine’s exported coal production. One can only hope that whilst in India, she leads her entourage through the haze of fossil fuel pollution to visit not only the growing number of huge wind and solar farms all over India, but also the stockpiled surplus heaps of 81,000,000 tonnes of coal that grows daily, and the nearly 20 partiallybuilt coal-fired power stations that have been mothballed because they are financially unviable. Perhaps, on her return, she could share photos with the Minister for Resources, Matt Canavan, and the people of Queensland about what she saw, and then finally say NO to the financially, environmentally and culturally unsound Adani mine. Ken Dyer Landsborough

The colour orange helped reinforce the important message

Bullying Day of Action Students at Beerwah State High School have recently been participating in focused learning activities around Bullying. These lessons are a part of the 'Bullying. No Way!' program that has been put together by the Government. They have discussed types of bullying, strategies to deal with bullying, bystander behaviour and how bystanders can help to show that bullying is not acceptable. Students have also had the opportunity to make a pledge to say no to bullying at Beerwah SHS. Students signed a pledge board that will be proudly displayed in the school, to remind them of their commitment to eliminate bullying in our school. Students were given the option to wear ‘Bullying. No Way!’ wristbands, to visibly demonstrate their commitment to end bullying.

CABINETS

While in the process of renovating our 1980’s Italian built house we have worked hard to keep the character and individual style, but with a modern twist. When we looked at the kitchen I knew exactly who we would call – the go-to man. Having known Kev for 20 years I was in no doubt he would listen and make our dream kitchen happen. From locking in a timeframe to suit our busy lives, to re-using existing glass panels to ensure the flow through to the dining room, Kev and his team ticked all the boxes. The pop-up electrical points in the island bench is a personal favourite gadget – thanks Kev!

Professional renovations by QKB Distributors Queensland Kitchen & Bathroom Distributors and Reno-VateIT Cabinets are the same business; and we have been trading in Beerwah since 2006. Robert Turner as director of both businesses has been cabinetmaking and building for 26 years. We have had some changes over the past two years, including the change to our business trading name from Reno-VateIT Cabinets to Queensland Kitchen & Bathroom Distributors to correspond with our website www.qkb.net.au Other changes to the business saw the retirement of Jeff, hanging up the boots after 50 years in the building trade. QKB today is predominantly a renovation specialty company. Our online store allows our clients to shop from home, relieving the pressures of today's busy world. Our cabinetmaking shop specialises in kitchen, bathroom, laundry or office renovations. We also make and install wardrobe fit-outs. WE CLEAN WATER TANKS

Do it right with Brush Right Painting!

Healthy Water… Healthy Life! Pristine Water Systems offers a wide range of water purification products and replacement filters / cartridges for homes, boats, caravans and restaurants etc. Our body relies on clean, pure water for general good health and well-being. It’s as important as the quality of air that we breathe. The fact is however that the water we drink from our kitchen taps is not always 100% water at all – it can also contain a weak solution of the chemicals that are added to make it “safe” to drink. Chlorine and chloramine additions are necessary to control bacteria levels in drinking water. These chemicals should be likened to the lunch wrap that is used to protect our sandwiches. Whilst it is beneficial in keeping the sandwiches clean, it should definitely be removed before the sandwiches are eaten. The good news is that there is a solution. Good quality drinking water filters / purifiers effectively “unwrap” the water that we consume – for both drinking, food preparation and cooking. So whether you rely on town or tank water, Simon or Allen can assist you to make the best informed decision on what’s available to make your water the purest for you and your family. Leave the stress to the experts For most of us the idea of renovating our homes sounds a little daunting, particular when it includes modifying or installing totally new kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and robes. However there is no need to stress, as Kev's Joinery and Shopfitters at Beerwah are confident they will be able to work with you to turn your ideas into reality. Kev has over 40 years in the industry and more than 15 years manufacturing in Biondi Crescent (near the Beerwah Golf Club). Kev and his team have transformed the homes of many locals, who are keen to vouch for the quality of the work, professional service and overall results. Over the years Kev’s team have taken on hundreds of individual projects, including major shop fitouts such as the Monty’s at Montville and the latest brand new florist ‘Ivy Lane’ at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, right through to one-off cabinets. While they love a big project to get their teeth into, they are also happy to do the smaller jobs as well. When Kev meets his new clients the first thing he likes to do is listen to their ideas and concerns and then, with the knowledge and experience gained over his lifetime in the industry, he can generally provide plenty of ideas and suggestions that the clients may not be aware are available. Quite a few years ago Kev became aware that many of his clients valued being able to shop locally, however they assumed that they would have to travel outside of the area to purchase the electrical and white goods that would be required for the project. This is not the case. Along with offering the complete joinery service, Kev is also able to source all your electrical appliances and white goods at a great price. With an attention to detail which is second to none, Kev and his team strive to offer a personalised service and always go that extra mile for their clients. If you would like some expert help and advice with your next home project, please give Kev and his team a call on 5494 6500.

HOME & Garden Gardening ideas made easy With some good rains finally here, our attention is able to turn back to rehabilitating our garden landscapes. It doesn’t hurt every now and again to rethink just what it is you want from your gardens. Is the layout suitable for your lifestyle now? Are the plants suffering from increased shade or changes in drainage? Have plants outgrown their spaces or their attractive lifespans?

maleny

So many decisions and options. Wouldn’t it be helpful if you could take inspiration from what others have already developed and established. Never fear, your solution is here … the Gardening on the Edge event in June. Organised by the Maleny Garden Club, the Gardening on the Edge weekend (June 10 and 11) sees six gardens across the Maleny region opened for inspection. The gardens are selected not because they are magazine-like glamorous rambling estates (although some are); they are selected due to their variety, use of design, clever use of plants and features, ease of care, suitability to the local conditions, and general attractiveness and appeal.

They are both smaller urban and larger rural-style gardens. The beauty is that we other gardeners have a chance to wander about, take photos, see how plants perform, see how they respond to different situations and speak with the garden owners. Not only are you able to gain huge inspiration from the gardens, but you can take away practical ideas which can be used in your garden projects. Things like: • planting combinations for both looks and companion planting • encouraging wildlife into your garden • introducing hard structures into the garden – like paths, gazebos, edging and walls • productive gardening • garden design to withstand kids or pets, and • how to fill those troublesome shady spaces. Between now and June, GC&M News will preview a couple of the Gardening on the Edge open gardens to whet your appetite. But in the meantime, we’ve included a couple of photos from gardens featured last year.

Bush food banter with Spencer Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery

Celebrating native ingredients Davidson plum

Davidson plums, also called ‘ooray’, are one of my favourite bushfoods. They grow on a Dr Seuss-like tree of dark purple fruit sprouting in grape-like clusters from its narrow, straight trunk. There are four varieties of Davidson plum which grows from the far tropical north of Australia to northern New South Wales. The two commercially cultivated varieties are Davidsonia pruriens and Davidsonia jerseyana. These beautiful rainforest trees are very ornamental with outstanding leaves – growing up to 1m in length, pinnately divided with prominently toothed leaflets. Small pink flowers in Spring occur in long sprays on the trunk of the tree and are followed by bunches of purple plums. Harvesting Davidson plums requires no effort – the fruit simply fall when ripe. The dark fruit are high in acid and contain 100 times more vitamin C than found in oranges and also contain lutein, a compound that plays an important role in eye health, along with magnesium, zinc, calcium, potassium and manganese. The plums are 3 - 6cm across and contain one or two flat seeds. To prepare for cooking, cut in half and remove seeds. The skin is edible and the deep red flesh is delicious when cooked into jams, syrups, chutneys and sauces. Dried plums are also stunning. Here’s an easy recipe to enjoy your Davidson plums.

Davidson plum jam Ingredients 700g Davidson plums 700g sugar 1 lemon, juiced ½ vanilla pod, cut in half lengthways Instructions Start off by washing your plums and then cutting them in half and removing the two seeds in the middle. Place them into a non reactive pot. Weigh the plums and add equal parts sugar. 500g of plums equals 500g sugar, etc. Add the lemon juice and vanilla pod and heat the mixture over a moderate heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a light rolling boil and allow to simmer for an hour or until the mixture has slightly thickened. Test the mixture by putting a small amount on a saucer and place in the freezer for a minute to see if it sets. Once the mixture is ready, pour out into to jars. Put the lids on immediately and allow to cool before storing. Davidson plum and chilli jam – To turn into a savoury jam, add two star anise, ½ ts ground ginger and 5 small chillies.

Plant of the Month

Grass Trigger Plant

Stylidium graminifolium This delightful little plant can be seen flowering in moist sandy or rocky areas of the Glass House Mountains area, but is also common in other states and as far as the north of this state. A hardy species, Trigger plant will happily grow in full sun or shade, and due to the small size is suitable for most home gardens. The leaves form a grass-like rosette at the base of the plant which may not be obvious in the natural habitat until spring, when the slender spikes of pink orchidlike flowers appear. The name ‘Trigger Plant’ derives from the interesting process of pollination. Insects visiting the flowers stimulate a ‘trigger’ on the plants which springs up hitting the insects and releasing pollen onto them! What a clever way of ensuring species survival! Growing to a maximum height of 80cm even when in flower, Trigger plants are suitable for growing in containers. The GMAN nursery has good supplies of this attractive plant.

Contact 5439 9341 or 5496 9671

I think we would all agree that life is getting busier and more complex. Even people in my demographic of the “Gen Xers” would heartily agree that things were much simpler when we were kids. I often hear people my own age who speak fondly of when they were kids and would play in the neighbourhood all day, cricket in the street, riding BMX bikes around town and bushland, their families taking them out for Sunday drives. Sadly, the words I tend to hear others and myself say nowadays are “I’m just too busy”. The image of a mouse on a treadmill even springs to mind – pedalling like crazy but getting nowhere and feeling awful. Now I don’t believe that this is what we are designed for… I believe that God wants us to be fulfilled in life. He wants us to work hard but also enjoy the many blessings that we have and to honour him with the way we live our lives. In the Bible (Ecclesiastes Ch 3 verse 12-1) it says, “I know that there is nothing better for men than to be

happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil – this is the gift of God.” I love this verse because I think it is a reminder to keep things in balance, but also to contribute to our loved ones and the people around us. Our kids need to build childhood memories of carefree days playing and having fun. Here are some tips that help my family claim back some time amidst the busyness: 1) We disconnected the TV… just watching DVDs now… it’s great! No ads! 2) Spend 2 minutes with each of our kids before they go to sleep asking them what their favourite part of the day was. 3) Try to have dinner together each night at the dinner table except when we’re having a movie night or chilling with friends. 4) Put our mobile phones away when we’re having dinner. I pray that God would bless you and your family that you’d experience joy in the simple things.

Sport Exciting opportunity for Dylan Sporting stars at Mooloolah Dylan Bradley from the Under 10’s Team at Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club was given the great opportunity to present Harris Andrews from the Brisbane Lions with his #31 jersey for the year. This was a big thrill for Dylan as he was able to meet and talk with the Lions players at the presentation ceremony. With the Junior AFL Season due to kick off just after the Easter Holiday, the teams are training now on Thursday afternoons at 4.30pm at the Landsborough Sports Complex on Tunnel Ridge Road. We are looking to submit a team in the newly formed Under 6s competition which has been set up for the kids that have completed Auskick and want to continue playing footy before the Under 8s. We are also looking for additional girls to play in our Under 13’s team. No experience with AFL is necessary, you just need to be keen to have fun and make new friends while increasing your fitness and learning great new skills. Glasshouse is still accepting registrations for all grades for boys and girls. If you are interested in giving AFL a try, please contact Craig Bales on 0414 225 329. MARCH 22 2017

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Recently some students from Mooloolah State School went and tried out for different sports to represent the Glass House district. They all did a great job and three of the students were chosen to be in the district teams. Firstly, there is Oliver Gassner. He was chosen for the Rugby League side as was his classmate Axel Stewart. They tried extremely hard and their efforts paid off and now they will both be off to districts next month for Rugby League. I spoke to Oliver and this is what he had to say: “I have made the district team and I am so proud. I hope to succeed and be chosen for the regional team.” Oliver plays Rugby League for Caloundra Sharks and in the off season he plays Oz-Tag for under 12s and on a mixed side on Monday nights. Axel plays rugby league for Kawana Dolphins during footy season. Not only did he make the district Rugby League side, he has also managed to land a spot on the district Basketball team. Way to go Axel. Alyssa Hayman has made the district team for Netball. Alyssa plays club Netball at Caloundra for Pacific Netball Club and enjoys many other sports. Well done to you all. We hope you have success in your sporting adventures. Mooloolah School is extremely proud of you. Oliver Gassner and Alyssa Hayman

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Submitted by Brenda Briese I was quite excited by the lovely sound of rain this week, if only it had lasted a little longer. But it was certainly welcome. Saturday, March 11 was a Stableford event where we had 25 players and had some very good scoring. Winner was Marie Goyder 40 pts on OCB from Libby Gemmel, 40 pts. NTPs: No (2) and (5) Jenny Hosking with a wonderful Hole in One on 5, (16) Jo Malone, (18) Jennifer Kelly. BRD to 36 OCB. Congratulations Jenny. Thursday, March 16: Stroke round. Division 1 Winner was Cheryl Jepson, 69 nett. R/up Cathy Stone, 70 nett. Cathy had a great Eagle on the 8th hole. Well done Cath. Division 2 winner Michelle Leahy, 70 nett. R/ up Margaret Williams, 71 nett. NTPs: (2) Fay Barry, (5) Cathy Stone, (16) Heather Henn, (18) Jennifer Kelly. BRD went to 75 OCB. Here's to a cooler change and some more sprinkles. See you on the fairways.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Contributed by Pauline Fraley ln spite of Witta Wagtail’s loss to Maleny Magics, the competition and tennis between the two teams was very enjoyable. Thanks to players Claire, Eunice, Gerry and Sonia. Whistlers had a very tough match against the Friday Competition leaders, Mooloolaba Legends. The Whistlers tried hard, but didn't get many opportunities to win the important points. The Mooloolaba team played well. Donna, Liz and Maree were helped today by Dee South from Yandina. Another close game for the Wildcats, this time we were up against Maroochydore Friday Flyers. Again 4 sets each but games going the wrong way 33-37. Team was Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart Stacey English and Jenie Riding. Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au

Thursday, March 16: Winners of the day with 2 wins and a score of + 33 were Col Allen and Allan Pashby. R/Up were Rae Farrell and Di Hume with a score of + 16 in the second game. The lucky draw went to Marilyn Podmore and Jimmy Tatum. Saturday, March 18 , Hinterland Local League Round 7, Ladies 9.00am. Glasshouse 1 vs Palmwoods away. Glasshouse had an overall win with one rink each. It should be enough to keep them on top of the table. Glasshouse 2 played at home against Woombye and, with the triples team winning and the pairs team having a loss, overall Glasshouse won. Hinterland Men played away against Palmwoods having a great win three rinks to one. Next week we are at home against Nambour Heights. Premier’s 7s – the last round was played and it was a disappointing end with 2 losses. Division 1 at home against TewantinNoosa lost 2 rinks to one with the highlight being Dean Shaw’s great win in the singles. Division 3 played at home against Bramble Bay and also went down 2 rinks to one with the pairs team of Rob Scullion and Bill Tumbridge having a win. The Kerry Capern Memorial Day was held last Sunday with a huge turnout of bowlers. A big thankyou to everyone who donated prizes, especially Bill and Lorelle Tumbridge who sponsor this day. The winners were Eileen Pearce, Doug Sweedman, Mac Townson and Rob Scullion with 2 wins plus a 53 margin. Expression of interest sheet is up in office shed for Men's Pennants for 2017. We are after more players. This year our Club is in Division 1 and 4. Thursday 23, nominations for Club Championship Men’s Pairs will be open. You have 2 weeks to put your entry in. Both navy blue and white pants can be worn. Every Sunday our club runs bowls coaching from 10.30am to noon. This morning is open to everyone who wants to come along for a bowl, either for fun or to improve their game. www.gcnews.com.au

The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Neil Lovett On Saturday two of our longest serving players, Val and Vince Carbery, took two of our newest, Wendy Whitby and Bev Sockhill, under their wings in a modified game of Aussie Croquet, with Vince and Wendy winning with 14 hoops to 12 by Val and Bev. Frances Harper 5 beat Ken Barker 1, and in doubles Ted Gardner and Sally Adams beat Sarah Widin and John Crofts 4 - 2. Despite weather warnings Vince and Ken played on Sunday, Ken winning 20 - 15, and Kath Smith and Sarah played a short game against Donna Manning and Sally for a 6-all draw. On Thursday, undeterred by the midday storm, Ken and Frances played, with Ken prevailing 8 - 4. For information about playing times, joining, coaching or bookings ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Sarah Widin on 0417 640 704.

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ian Hansen Twilight Challenge - the final night of the 10 week fixtures resulted in a 3-way tie after the Wot Nots appeared to be certainties with two weeks to go. However, they failed to register another win and Ben Bryce and Handles joined them with 24 points after Wednesday’s games. Thus a 3-way bowl-off was required and the Handles ran out winners. Congratulations Tom Ukola, Ray Ellemor and Ray Pantlin on your victory. There will now be two weeks of Social Bowls of a Wednesday evening before the next fixtures commence. The winning Teams on Wednesday were Amigos, Handles, Bridge Club, Ben Bryce, Musketeers, Ezi Riders, Sunstone and the Grove. The lucky draw winners were: Lead - Lyn Hansen, Second - Jim Davidson and Skip - Carol Cook. The Touchers went to David Coffey, Pat Dunn and Alan Loynes. The Money Board winners were Steve Ellert and Allan Cook. Tuesday, March 15 - winners were the Triples Team of Peter Duffy, John Kapetanic and Relma Godfrey with two wins +11. They doubled-up by also winning the Jackpot but it was a miserly $10.00 split three ways after it was also won last week. Three rinks of St. Patrick’s Day Scroungers were played and the winners were Joe Walters, Doug McGufficke and Ian Chatterton. The only Sponsors’ Prize winner present was Joe Walters who won the Day Lily Nursery prize. The lucky Money Board winner was Scott Alexander. Many thanks to our visiting Leprechaun, who was resplendent in his dress, and who told a couple of Irish jokes but failed to bring any luck according to some grumpy bowlers who obviously didn’t play too well and were looking for excuses. Your attendance was much appreciated and most members did wear green. This week there will be Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, Social Twilight Challenge Wednesday and Scroungers Friday. The Monthly Jackpot Pairs are on Monday, March 27. Finally a word about the up-coming Championships. Because of a lack of nominations, the deadline has been extended to this Friday and the nomination fee has been reduced to $10.00 from the first quoted $25.00. Please get your names down. There are singles, pairs, triples and rinks, with men's, ladies' and also mixed competition.

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

The pushy salesman A little old lady answered a knock on the door one day, to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner. “Good morning,” said the young man. “If I could take a couple minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in highpowered vacuum cleaners.” ''No, thanks!'' said the old lady. ''I'm broke and haven't got any money!'' and she proceeded to close the door. ''Don't be too hasty!'' he said. ''Not until you have

at least seen my demonstration.'' And with that, he dropped horse manure onto her doorway carpet. “Now if this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder." The old lady stepped back and said, "Well let me get you a fork, 'cause they cut off my electricity this morning." Hugh Jones, Beerwah

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 A long time responsibility regarding family issues may weight more heavily than usual. However, because Aries is the energy coming through this week from the 21st, lively company brings happy starts to most days including the weekend. You have something to sort out with a local friend or a shopkeeper. Look for love now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Where family and domestic matters are concerned you will need to pay attention to subtle signals because of the Aries stars giving potential problems. Perhaps if you follow instincts where money is concerned your social skills will serve you well. Some domestic project suits the weekend: cleaning, decorating or planning a move. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 From the 21st the Equinox gives the end of the Pisces sign and the Aries birthdays commence. This means you achieve the greatest success under the fiery power of Aries stimulation to your Air sign. The month should see you with charm to spare and you will be attractive to many people. Most new connections will be fast and spontaneous. PISCES February 20 - March 20 This week is building to a wonderful social atmosphere probably making you more indulgent, and possibly buying something nice for your ego, or something you can’t live without. The weekend says it is fortunate that a bright idea is worth pursuing. Be careful not to succumb to somebody who pressures you. Avoid blind trust now.

LEO July 23 - August 22 From Wednesday this week the Sun sign moving through Aries energizes you and your desires to explore the world, different cultures and places. Of course there may be some disagreements and a subtle struggle for being top dog, however if you hang in the bluster will fade away. Good news, from both near and far, lifts spirits. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 Together with the Sagittarius moon at the beginning of the week and the Aries birthdays being launched midweek, try not to let stress get the upper hand as sometimes it may be hard to convince others that what you suggest is right. When confusion prevails, flexibility and spontaneity are your best qualities to adapt now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Midweek the Capricorn Moon brings your emotional attention to the home front as there is a barrel full of moody responses, and complicating interferences. The month ahead will not be all that bad as the Sun, moving through the sign of Aries, will get you to look at some big ideas. Look for a happy surprise when shopping. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Give careful attention to planning as things might go rapidly under the change of the energies into the Aries birthdays! Be careful not to overreact, even if others do so. The weekend sees developments over the home or whatever you consider is your base of operations. An old contact may be renewed for reassessment.

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com ARIES March 21 - April 20 The middle of the week looks like the best time to get anything done. One or two days won’t start with everyone waking up on the right side of the bed, but soon their stubbornness fades and everybody gets a grasp on what they need to achieve! Networking is strong over the weekend. Progressive high tech ideas pop up. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 Venus, your ruling planet is still retrograde, therefore this week is all about tying up loose ends. There is a tendency for some of your friends to adopt only a single minded focus but see if you can help them lighten up the atmosphere a bit. The weekend sees you with combination of friendliness and charm. Nostalgic feelings will arise. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 March 21 sees the birthdays moving into the sign of Aries. For Geminis, you could not ask for a more revved up month ahead with new friendships! Expect to be busy with groups, community events and friends who want to go out and play. The week is highly active for any sporting events and some may take trips for big matches. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Since the birthdays of the Aries people take place this week, one or more may present you with a compelling argument and try to sell you on some big ideas. The planets are not giving you much time to weigh the pros and cons before coming to a decision. Just forget long range plans and take each day or week or month as it comes.
