Hi Everyone

W

hen I was writing the headline for the front cover of GCNews last week I went with the wording “Beerwah ready to Celebrate” – and I have to say I definitely got that so right! The number of people who headed along to the Friday afternoon / evening event in Simpson Street was amazing, and there was so much positive energy, fun and excitement in the air. We got there at 4.00pm to make sure we were in time for the official speeches and straight away you could tell it would be a good night. Originally the official opening of the event was to be undertaken by Cr Rick Baberowski who has worked tirelessly

to ensure that the end result of the project would bring much to our local community. Sadly Cr Baberowski’s father passed away the previous weekend and he had to travel to the UK to be with his family and was not able to attend the event. While the Mayor took on the official duties, Cr Baberowski’s son Huxley represented his dad and spoke about the project and how the different elements are contributing to Beerwah being a modern country town. From the many, many comments I have heard I understand that, while not everyone might ‘get’ the meaning behind the public art or some of the structures, the work has definitely created an excellent place for thousands of people to come together and enjoy themselves. Regards,

Mt Tibrogargan temporary closure The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will close access to Mt Tibrogargan in the Glass House Mountains National Park from Monday, October 20 for up to two weeks, to remove loose rocks from the summit access route.

HINTERLAND ACCOUNTING SERVICES

For safety reasons, access will also be restricted to the Tibrogargan Circuit walking track (including access to the Mt Tibrogargan lookout) and some sections of the Trachyte Circuit walking track. QPWS Sunshine and Fraser Coast Regional Director Geoff Brittingham asked visitors to the national park to observe the closure for their own safety. “The rock removal, or ‘scaling’, would be highly dangerous to anyone who happened to be on the mountain below the work site,” Mr Brittingham said. “So we have to close the mountain, including rock climbing access and the Caves Route. Signs will be placed on all access points to inform visitors. “QPWS rangers will be in the area during the works to keep people away for their safety’s sake. Anyone not complying can be issued an on-thespot penalty of $455.00.” Mr Brittingham said the summit access route had been closed since February 2014, due to the effects of a wildfire on the top of the mountain.

Call Leisa or Michelle

“The scaling operation is part of the works to reopen the summit route to the public,” he said. “The time frames for completing the works and reopening the summit access will depend on the weather.” The Mt Tibrogargan car park will be closed between 7.00am and 5.30pm from Monday to Friday during the works. Alternative parking will be available at the Trachyte Circuit car park, 200m south of Mt Tibrogargan car park, off Barrs Road. For an alternative summit climb or walk in the area, please visit Mount Ngungun for spectacular views of nearby peaks, or Mount Beerburrum. More than a makeover ... There’s a fresh look and feel to Beerwah courtesy of council’s streetscape upgrade in Simpson Street. The $5 million dollar works were officially unveiled on Friday night, in conjunction with the official opening of the Glasshouse Country Festival. Councillor Baberowski said the project had transformed the town centre into a safer, more pedestrian-friendly and picturesque space that would strengthen local business. “A lot of hard work from council and the community has gone into this project over the last four years and the end result is one that everyone can be very proud of,” Cr Baberowski said.

Cr Rick Baberowski’s son Huxley cuts the ribbon with Mayor Mark Jamieson and Chamber of Commerce President Ken Bannister

“This is a fresh new look for Beerwah that has also retained the modern country feel of what the local community values.” Key aspects of the upgrade include improvements to road infrastructure and raised pedestrian crossings to create a low-speed traffic environment. New public seating has been installed along with provisions for outdoor dining. Improved street lighting, increased footpath space and new shade trees are also features. While the upgrade also included changes to on-street car parking, the total number of car parking spaces on Simpson Street remains the same, however the parking area now extends further down Simpson Street, (opposite Aldi’s).

Butterfly Towers stand out in Beerwah Tower Green

Friday’s street party also marked the unveiling of Stage 1 of ‘Beerwah Tower Green’, an exciting new space on Simpson Street that puts a contemporary twist on a traditional town square. It features large architectural ‘Butterfly Towers’, stone artworks, seating and gardens, and provides an interesting and relaxing space for locals and visitors. Cr Baberowski described the area as now being a defining feature of the town, taking the site of the old level crossing and turning it into a destination with layers of interest and function. “It represents our heritage, both in how it takes its form from the water towers of Beerwah’s past, and how it is inspired by the pineapple packing crate we all recognise,” he said.

Beerwah's been totally transformed

Vianta a sophisticated new venue that brings a different flavour to Beerwah

Eagle Boys have completed their refresh and Ray White's is well underway

Ken and Joey Bannister outside their Kwerky Cafe

Complementing local artist Russell Anderson’s striking ‘steampunk’ style sculptures on Simpson Street, stone work from internationally recognised Peachester artist Hew Chee Fong is also featured in the Tower Green section. It isn’t just the locals who love the work, Council was also recently rewarded for engineering excellence at the Public Works Engineering State Excellence Awards receiving the ‘Overall Excellence Award’. Mayor Mark Jamieson agrees, “the project has transformed the town-centre of Beerwah into a safer, more picturesque space that is already strengthening local businesses,” he said. Chamber of Commerce President Ken Bannister said that these days Beerwah business people seemed much more positive. “The timing of the opening of Bargain Max, then

Target and Beerwah IGA last week, dove tailing with the completion date of the Council’s project has created plenty of excitement,” Mr Bannister said. It would seem that Council’s work has also inspired some of the other local businesses to undertake some improvement work of their own. Eagle Boys have undertaken a huge makeover of their premises, which has really modernised their look. The shop next door to Eagle Boys that had housed Video Ezy for many years has also seen significant structural changes to the front to create a modern styled cafe / tapas bar. The ANZ has had a refit and it is all action at Ray White Real Estate who are also doing a major revamp to their office. Suncorp is looking shinier and the doors have been replaced with automatic opening ones.

And Ken and Joey Bannister’s recently-opened Kwerky Café, has also brought plenty of colour into the street.

There is still more to come as the new tenants move into Beerwah Village, so here’s to seeing Beerwah going from strength to strength. Please note that Cr Baberowski was unable to attend the official opening on Friday night, as his father had passed away in the UK the weekend before and the Councillor travelled to England to assist and support his family. Cr Baberowski had expressed his disappointment at not being able to be part of the celebration, however he was pleased that his son Huxley (who had been initially involved in the consultation process) was able to represent him at the official opening.

BeeGees Legend in profile Alan McMaster During the early to mid 1970s, the BeeGees ruled. All the elements of an extraordinary club aligned at the same time – great players, great supporters, great grounds and great attitude – to make BeeGees a dominant force on the Sunshine Coast and regionally. Many of their earlier players came from abroad, attracted to the area by the rich farming lands. One such Irish immigrant was James Alan McMaster. Originating from Augher, Northern Ireland, Alan came to Australia around 1966 and it was thought he travelled around working as a farm hand until he settled in the Glass House Mountains area in 1972. He played a handful games for the club that year, but didn’t become a regular player until the 1974 season. Alan – Mac or Irish as he was known to many – worked as a ‘share-farmer’ on tobacco farms and was highly regarded by all for his hard work in farming and on the football field. He played most of the 1974 season (they won the grand final) and was captain-coach in 1975, when they again won the grand final, as well as placing third in a Brisbane-wide tournament. He also was selected in the Sunshine Coast representative team. Beegees were again dominating the 1976 season when, on returning from an away game against Margate, Alan was tragically involved in a car accident in late June, and his life support system was switched off the next week.

Volunteers in policing

The death of Alan McMaster was a sledge-hammer blow to not only the BeeGees – who went on to lose the semifinal that year – but to the entire close Alan McMaster (right) knit community of tackles Jim Nipperess in Beerwah and Glass the 1975 grand final House Mountains. As reported in the media at the time, Alan was a well respected member of the soccer community all over the Coast. His playing style was described as determined and skilful, with a “tremendous ability to read a game to be in exactly the right spot when needed” and being “a terrific tackler and probably one of the hardest men on the coast to get around”. All three of the other BeeGees Legends and the Sunshine Coast Football Association Immortal Lyle Bryce, played with ‘Mac’ during those years. Allan Smerdon described him as a “tough, hardplaying competitor who was extremely admired by all who played with and against him”. Phil Shaw remembers ‘Mac’ as “the hardest player I’ve ever come across … but also a good mate who would do anything for you”. Ken Fullerton, reading a eulogy at Alan’s funeral, summed up how everyone felt at the time: “His passing is a heavy blow to our club, and I feel sure a sorrowful burden to all who knew him.” Ken has since travelled to Ireland and met with Alan’s family, a task which although a difficult one for him, brought some closure for those left so far away.

Volunteers in Policing (ViPs) is a Queensland Police Service (QPS) initiative created to encourage community participation in local policing services. Launched in 1997, the program aims to enhance community service delivery by forging strong working partnerships between police and the people it serves. Based in local police establishments, the ViPs work with police to address customer service, community safety and crime prevention needs in the community. The range of tasks they undertake complement rather than compete with the roles and responsibilities of paid police officers and staff members and the work can allow volunteers to meet new people, make new friends and get to know their local community better. Some of the tasks involved with being a volunteer can include: providing support to and assisting victims of crime, offering referrals to other agencies, liaising with community groups and participating in community-based activities as well as conducting home security assessments and property identification. Sunshine Coast District Police are currently looking for people over 18 years of age, willing to assist police officers in reducing crime and enhancing community safety. Applications are now being sought for Beerwah locals willing to supply between four and 16 hours per week of volunteer work. Applications close Friday October 24 and forms can be viewed at www.police.qld.gov.au/join/vip/Documents/ VolunteersinPolicingProgramApplicationForm For more information contact Sunshine Coast District Crime Prevention Coordinator at email CrimePrevention.SCD@police.qld.gov.au or call 5409 7944.

Should you take your child to see a chiropractor? More and more parents are taking their children to the chiropractor these days. Is it safe? Is it effective? Why are they going if they don’t have pain? Should you take your child? Why do children visit a chiropractor? The answer is simple: whether we have a large spine or a tiny one, if the spine is misaligned or jammed up, our body is unable to function the way it is meant to. This condition is termed Spinal Subluxation What is the impact of a subluxated spine? Most people use pain as the only determinate of their health and wellbeing. We tend to have the idea of “no pain = no problem.” While pain is a good indicator that something is wrong, the lack of pain is not always a reliable factor in determining our health. For example, consider ‘Uncle Joe’ who felt fine his entire life then dropped dead from a heart attack. While pain can definitely be a sign of Spinal Subluxation, pain is not the only consequence. Because our Nervous System – the master control system of the body – lives in our spinal cord, many things can be affected by spinal misalignments. What does the nervous system control? Everything! Your nervous system – made up of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves – is constantly monitoring and controlling every one of the hundreds of functions that are happening in your body at any given time. Digesting food, regulating blood pressure, breathing, moving your muscles and joints, regulating your body temperature, etc … all of these things are monitored and controlled by your nervous system.

Beerwah – 5494 0499 6

| OCTOBER 22 2014

How does chiropractic work? Chiropractors have 5-7 years of university training, with their main focus on detecting and correcting Spinal Subluxation. If a child – or any person for that matter – has Spinal Subluxation, their body is no longer able to heal and regulate itself at 100%. The possible symptoms are endless! Once function is restored to the spine and nervous system, your body then has potential to return to normal function and health. It is important to note that chiropractors do not ‘treat’ any condition other than Spinal Subluxation, though many symptoms improve as normal function is restored. Is it safe? Chiropractic care is extremely gentle for children, and is safe for people of all ages. In fact, parents often ask “Is that all you’re going to do?” after watching their child receive adjustment. Techniques are modified to suit each individual person to make sure each adjustment is safe, effective, and as comfortable as possible. Dr Braxton is a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), is Webster Technique certified, and sees many children each day in practice. In agreement with the ICPA, Dr Braxton believes that every child should be checked for Spinal Subluxation.

Works start on interpretive centre Last Friday before officially opening Beerwah’s recently transformed streetscape, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson was busy preserving our local history.

Mayor Mark Jamieson with President of the Friends of Bankfoot House, Ron Gillander turning the first sod

He used a ‘heritage shovel’ steeped in history to turn the first sod for the new archival, visitor and interpretive centre at the Sunshine Coast Councilowned heritage property, Bankfoot House. Councillor Jamieson said the Bankfoot House archival and interpretive centre was made possible thanks to the Cultural Heritage Levy. “Council recognises the significant role the State heritage-listed Bankfoot House plays in the local community and is committed to preserving and enhancing the site and its many historical treasures,” Cr Jamieson said. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said Bankfoot House is the oldest known surviving building in the Glass House Mountains area and documents the history of three generations occupying the same house for more than 130 years. “Established in 1868 as a roadside accommodation house on the new road from Brisbane to the Gympie gold rush, Bankfoot House is an iconic State heritage-listed place housing a significant collection,” he said. “The house currently provides the opportunity for the community to take a look back in time with the house’s history conserved and interpreted by the Friends Group in partnership with council.

“The new facility will provide an enhanced visitor experience highlighting the value of our heritage, so that years from now, the region will still have an asset that tells future generations how far we have come, socially, economically and culturally. “The Friends of Bankfoot House who currently undertake the significant work of preserving and making the collection accessible to the public will certainly enjoy working from the new interpretive centre scheduled to be complete by February/ March 2015. “The contract for the proposed works at Bankfoot House has been awarded to local company, Infraco Pty Ltd, and will provide archival storage for the rare collection, work space for the volunteers, a multimedia educational interpretive centre, public amenities, a bus drop-off area and wheelchair access to the new purpose-built facility,” he said.

Beerwah left out of local bus loop A vital bus route link connecting Beerwah, Landsborough and Maleny residents could be axed. Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has slammed Translink for once again failing to consult the community over proposed bus route changes that will leave residents worse off. Mr McArdle’s office has been advised that the Beerwah leg (zones 3 and 4) of the MalenyLandsborough-Beerwah qconnect bus service is proposed to be scrapped following a review undertaken by Translink. Under the proposed changes, Beerwah residents wishing to access Maleny will now have to do so by either walking or driving to Beerwah train station and then catching the train to Landsborough or catching the 649 railbus. Mr McArdle said that Translink informed him the proposal would allow savings to be reinvested to increase public transport coverage in the Maleny area. “The proposed changes and more importantly the lack of community consultation is not good enough,” Mr McArdle said. “This once again shows the complete incompetency of Translink. “In their correspondence to my office, Translink have confirmed that 50 per cent of residents in the catchment area for this service reside within 800m of Beerwah rail station, yet they’re proposing to cut Beerwah from this journey.” Mr McArdle has called on local residents left

worse off under the proposed changes to contact his office directly and immediately so he can forward the local community’s concerns to the Transport Minister, Scott Emerson. People can do so by emailing Caloundra@ parliament.qld.gov.au or by phoning 5491 2780.

Landsborough local 15-year-old Tahlia Harrop, who is a member of Mooloolah Pony Club, has recently won the 2D junior championships of the ‘Makin’ It Mega’ Barrel Racing series for 2014. Just in case you’re not across the term Barrel Racing – it is a rodeo event in which a horse and rider attempt to complete a clover-leaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time. Makin’ It Mega is a Barrel Racing competition and a fast paced, adrenaline pumping sport. Tahlia’s victory has seen her receive a beautiful belt buckle and the opportunity to go to Jackson, Mississippi, USA for the Youth Challenge and Mega Barrel Race, with prize money of over $50,000, in August 2015. Tahlia’s mum Helen Bland said that considering Tahlia rides her Arab against sprint bred quarter horses and also in her English saddle when the others ride in western saddles, it's quite an achievement. Tahlia has also been selected to go to Guangdong Horse Festival in China to represent the Pony Club Association of Queensland.

There will also be the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for other wonderful prizes. Registration for the ride opens at 7.30am at the north-end of the Ettamogah Pub car park for a prompt 9.00am start. Landsborough Cellarbrations have just recently wrapped up a mega month-long promotion showcasing their organic, preservative free, organic in conversion and biodynamic wines. The promotion served to raise public awareness of these Julie and Bronwyn from products through daily tastings and Landsborough Hotel with featured company wine rep visits that hamper winners Elaine and proved very popular with customers. Libby With over 30 wines featured in the promotion, the customer feedback has been fantastic with the store enjoying a significant increase in organic wines sales. The response has been so good that the promotion will now become a yearly event. One of the highlights of the month was the chance for customers to enter and win a bumper hamper filled with a selection of organic goodies and organic / preservative free wines. Winner of the major prize hamper was happy customer Libby and the runner up hamper was won by Elaine. Landsborough Cellarbrations sends a big thank you to all their suppliers for donating wines for all the prizes and to Kookaburra Organics for supplying the organic fruit and vegetables. Stay tuned for new additions to the range in time for Christmas. I don’t always find grocery shopping the kind of activity that brings a smile to my face, but I have to say going into Beerwah IGA when it opened last Wednesday was an enjoyable experience! And I wasn’t alone, there were plenty of other happy faces heading around the ‘spacious aisles’ checking out the wide range of products on the shelves. One smiling face was that of Beerwah local Norma Stevens who was congratulated for being the first customer to enter the store. This is a tradition for Norma – she was also the last customer to walk out the door of the old store in Simpson Street when it closed last year. We have included some of the comments made by other customers on page 20, so if you haven’t checked it out yet, then you will want to head down and find out what all the excitement is about. Congratulations to long time locals Gordon and Dawn Lindsay who last week opened ‘Nan and Pop's Fruit Shop’ in Landsborough – just up from the newsagency. They have been really pleased with how warmly they have been welcomed by the locals. Being a small local business it is the couple’s aim to deliver great customer service and value while offering a personal touch that the bigger supermarkets can’t offer. They have some great opening specials, along with free delivery for orders over $30.00 within the Landsborough area, plus they offer an everyday 10 per cent discount to seniors upon presenting their senior card, and pensioner discount of five per cent each on Wednesday. With all the festival activities happening in Landsborough on October 25, they will be getting into the spirit and holding their grand opening on the day. So drop by and meet Gordon and Dawn, say hello and meet some of their ‘grown up’ children who will be there to help on the day.

Why is Prep important? At Glasshouse Country Christian College we understand that a child’s first day of Prep is one of the most important in their whole lives. A child’s Prep experience can determine their attitude to the rest of their schooling life. Our Prep teachers are dedicated to ensuring that when children embark on their education journey, a life-long love of learning is born. Time is taken to meet with each child before school even begins to perform an independent assessment and develop a personal relationship between the teacher and child. Children are enveloped in a warm and nurturing environment that helps them develop confidence and independence. The result is a positive and engaging learning experience that ensures a smooth transition to Year 1 and a firm foundation for ongoing education. The Prep program integrates a researched balance of new technologies and conventional learning methods to enhance each child’s experience. Each classroom has an interactive

white board, iPads and computers so children become confident with technology at an early age. However, technology is never at the expense of foundational skills such as reading, writing, maths and art. The Prep program also includes specialist lessons such as Music, French, and Physical Education. Children especially love the Kitchen Garden where they explore the whole ‘patch to plate’ journey and learn to compost, plant, harvest, cook and (the favourite part) eat what they grow. Mums and dads love the flow-on benefits of children willing to eat vegetables and coming home with recipes such as roasted beetroot and vegetable ‘bruffins’. Why would you as a parent choose GCCC for your child? You will be providing a quality Christian education where the GCCC’s values of godliness, respect, excellence, attitude and teachability (GREAT) underpin an attitude of self-respect, respect for peers and help each child reach their full potential.

Community News Peachester local shares her family history A curvy night in Contributed by Roz Kuss Jocelyn Morgan from Peachester was this month’s guest speaker at the Caloundra Family History Research group. Jocelyn is very fortunate in that she has the information on her Grandfather’s 48 postcards, documenting his presence in both the UK and on the Western Front in World War I. His postcards all survived the perilous journey home and have been treasured by her family. English scenes of towns near Salisbury Plain where he trained were described later as ‘Chocolate Box Pictures’ after the son of the founder of the Cadbury Company used this type of photo on their boxed chocolates. Just a few were from the ‘Daily Mail’ collection taken in the Somme region where he saw service; some from London when on leave; and others around Weymouth where he recovered before being repatriated back to Australia with a medical discharge. Enlisting at 38 years of age, this family man from Eumundi, J G Martin, kept the postcards to remind him of his time in England, and in the service of his country. The group’s guest speaker on Thursday, November 20 will be popular Bribie raconteur and author, Dr James Lergessner. Visiting us for the third year in succession, his presentation will be on ‘Convict Foundations’. Members and visitors are welcome. Finally, on December 6, the group’s seminar ‘An Afternoon with Lady Mary Teviot’ will be held. Contact Roz on 5493 1197, Valerie on 5437 3879 or Dawn on 5492 2208 if you have enquiries, and to register for the seminar. The group can also be reached by email at caloundrafamilyres@y7mail.com. Entry to the resource centre at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club is through Gate 2 at the western end of Pierce Avenue, Little Mountain. Our website at www. caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au has a map. Poverty Week

Contributed by Jenny Morris To coincide with Poverty Week our guest speaker at our Glasshouse Country View Club meeting for the October luncheon was June Chandler, Secretary of State Council, Chair of Migrant and Refugee Council and Joint Chair of Children’s Education Fund for St Vincent de Paul. June was a very good speaker with an interesting topic – Poverty in Australia. June explained the broad meaning of poverty is the inability to supply Margaret Donoghoe and new members an individual or their family’s Glenda Halpin and Robin Lowe basic needs. The statistics show that one in eight people in Australia live in poverty. Many of us form perceptions without the true understanding of those who live on welfare. Many people through no fault of their own due to loss of work, health, mobility/disability, mental health problems, illiteracy and instability in the home, are forced to accept welfare. Organisations such as St Vincent de Paul and The Smith family and many others help these people through their various organisations’ programs. I am sure our members had a lot to think about and a better understanding of those who are in need. We thanked June for giving us an insight to those less fortunate than us. VIEW stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women. It is a leading women’s volunteer organisation and support network that empowers women to have their voices heard on issues of importance for the future wellbeing of Australian society. If you wish to join our club please contact Elaine on 5493 3935 or Margaret on 5435 2172. Our outing this month was at Daisy’s Place where ten of our members had morning tea in a lovely setting. We welcomed two new members, Robin Lowe and Glenda Halpin, who received their badges from our president. If you are coming to our Melbourne Cup luncheon at Club Glasshouse please pay Pat or Pauline before November 4. Our Christmas party is on December 3 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Three years since our face lift and name change It’s been three years since the club members voted to change the name of their club from Glasshouse Country Bowls Club to Club Glass House and since the renovations and name change the club has certainly not looked back. We asked our members what they like about their club and these are some of the responses: Dave and Rose reckon it has a lovely friendly atmosphere, and the staff are very welcoming. Penny said the friendliness, if you don’t know anyone when you walk in first time, you will have made friends by the time you leave. Bill and Maryanne – Warmth, friendliness, great food, pleasant surroundings, great staff, trustworthiness, I feel welcome. Dorothy said the friendly staff and members, fine food – quick service especially the keno. Jo, I love that everyone knows me and the bar staff know what I drink. Nigel, It’s a friendly club with great staff and a wonderful welcoming atmosphere.

Kevin, Great ‘courtesy bus’ driver. Janice likes the friendly staff, pleasant atmosphere, great clientele, fantastic food – loves the Bingo. Karen has peace of mind always knowing where to find her husband. For Gerry, it’s President Denis – his humour and honesty is worth bottling, staff work hard and are always welcoming. Good, honest, reliable staff are always the biggest asset of any business and obviously from our member’s comments we have huge assets. With this in mind we would like to acknowledge the retirement of long term staff member Julie-Anne. Julie-Anne has worked for the Club for 17 years, and now, with celebrating a big birthday this weekend, she has decided it’s time to have some family time. Management, staff and members would like to thank Julie-Anne for her years of hard work and friendship and we hope you enjoy

RAA Tigers give back to conservation! Following a visit to Australia Zoo earlier this year to meet their real-life mascots, the Enoggera Barracks’ Tigers have been inspired to give back to conservation. The 105 Battery 1st Regiment, Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery (RAA), who proudly regard the tiger as their mascot, have donated

$1000.00 to Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors' Tiger 511 conservation project – raised by selling Tiger 511 wristbands on the streets of Brisbane. Motivated by their visit to Australia Zoo in June where they met Sumatran Tiger cubs Hunter and Clarence, the RAA Tigers chose to spend their spare time raising money for the project. Working on the premise that $5.00 saves one tiger in the wild for one day, the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors’ Tiger 511 campaign aims to protect the remaining 400 estimated Sumatran Tigers left in the wild. 105 Battery representatives Major Trevor Watson and Kevin Pamenter recently presented the cheque to Australia Zoo Tigers and Conservation Manager, Giles Clark, and also took the opportunity to meet Australia Zoo Bengal Tiger Sunita – an ambassador for her endangered cousins in the wild. Giles Clark said that he was honoured by the support from the 105 Battery unit.

Writers’ group president retires By Rebecca Eve Glasshouse Mountains local Paul B. Stevens is a true gentleman of our community who has recently retired from six years as president of the Beerwah Writers’ Group. During his service he was able to write and publish a compelling memoir of a fascinating period in his life. As a young man Paul accepted the job of ‘chauffeur’ and immediately found himself in a hearse on a cold windy night. What follows is a myriad of experiences that reveal a unique window into life, and death in the English countryside. It is a captivating portrayal of the lovable (and

less so) characters he encountered. Filled with humour and heartbreak, we are transported to another place and time and were left wishing for more. ‘The Last Laugh’ is held in the National Library of Australia. There are very few copies available, but hopefully Paul will have another run printed. Thank you for your contribution to writing in the Glasshouse area.

Call for candles

The new owners of Beerwah Hideaway are planning a community event on the evening of Saturday, December 13 to tie-in with the festive season. Hoping to light up the gardens with 10,000 candles, owners Jennifer and Simon are inviting the public to come along and enjoy an evening of ambience. Showcasing over 18 months of hard work as well as wanting to put on a Christmas event for the local community, the night will feature music and garden games like quoits and giant dominos. The cafe will be open for dinner however visitors are welcome to bring a picnic, blanket and BYO. There is a new car park so there will be plenty of room for parking and visitors can come along and check out the new water features, statues and landscaping throughout the acre and a half property. The whole property will be lit up with candles, lanterns and solar lights and, to make this event a success, Jen and Simon are putting a call out to the community to donate their used candles. They will be happy to come out and pick them up or, alternatively, you can drop off candles at the Hideaway in the lead up to the event. The event will be free however a gold coin donation towards supporting a local charity is requested. If you are a local performer or musician and would like to perform on the night please contact the Hideaway. For more information contact Jen or Simon on 5494 6270 or drop off your candle donations to 1233 Steve Irwin Way.

Contributed by Sheila Williams At the meeting of Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch held on October 13, the Area Co-ordinator, Ron Stocks, presented the Good Neighbour Award to Janelle Steenson. She was nominated by John and Pam Innes, who wrote: “We would like to nominate Janelle Steenson for her work in the community. Janelle first became involved with the Beerwah High School Debutante Ball when her daughter made her debut, but she has stayed on the committee ever since and made a great contribution to this significant fund-raiser for the Anglican Church and Beerwah High School Chaplaincy. “She has also made her services available by face painting for church functions although she is not a parishioner. “When the idea of a Scarecrow competition in conjunction with the Charity Sports was mooted last year, Janelle became involved and she has ‘run with it’. “She organised classes this year for would-be-scarecrow-makers, culminating in a great success with 71 entries. “Once again she used her face painting talents at the event. Her other talent is managing to organise family and friends to help! Janelle has such a happy personality that it is a pleasure to work with her.”

Lions October Dinner Meeting Contributed by Bob Banner The Beerwah Lions Club had a larger than usual dinner meeting for October, when 27 Lions from Morayfield visited the Beerwah Club. It made for an interesting evening sharing ideas about community goals. Also present was Zone Chairman Rob Hobson accompanied by his wife Dianne. Guest speakers for the evening were Gwen Brooks and Kerry Gillam from the Glasshouse Country Toastmasters. They gave an inspiring talk addressing the importance of being able to talk with confidence, not only in public, but also during around the table discussions. During the evening Past President Rita Sanderson performed the rewarding task of inducting two new Lions, John and Lottie Nisbett (pictured), into the organisation.

Open Day at Landsborough Kindy

with the Superdads By Mike Turner (bass player for the Superdads)

Beerwah Celebrates!!!

On Friday evening 'The Superdads' performed at the 'Beerwah Celebration' in Simpson Street alongside eight local schools, 'Great Scott' the magician and the awesome ska band 'The Cheap Fakes'. This was a real privilege and we were stoked that we were asked. This was very cool because we had a lot of fun but also got to witness the beginning of a whole new exciting season for Beerwah and Glasshouse Country. It was great seeing huge numbers of families taking to Simpson Street which was filled with interesting stuff to do and have a look at. To see all the food outlets filled with people ordering dinner and having a good time together was awesome. To see the street lit up with lanterns and decorations, and the big tree outside the CWA hall with a colourful woollen jumper on, gave the street a magical atmosphere. But my favourite part as a dad was seeing a heap of kids (including my own) rocking it out – dancing in front of the stage and having a ball. Kids don't have enough opportunities to do stuff like that, so it was special to see! So, congratulations to all the organisers – looking forward to seeing many more great family events like it into the future. Happy Fathering guys! The Superdads – we are a bunch of guys who love playing music and have formed a band. Their name came from something their guitarist Pete said once… “I don’t just want to be an average dad, I want to be an exceptional dad” – the idea resonated with them. www.superdads.com.au

Contributed by Honi Cole We would like to invite families with young children to drop in and see what we do at kindy during our open day morning on Wednesday, October 29 from 9.30 to 10.30am. We want you to see how the children’s voice is heard at Landsborough Community Kindergarten; how the children program their day by sharing their ideas and interests. This is how our ‘Cuddly and Doll Day’ came about. Our friend Ryder brought his doll Angie to kindy to meet everyone and we all thought it would be lovely to bring in our very own cuddly or doll to kindy for the day, so a note was sent home to let families know about the event. The children’s day began with designing clothes for their cuddly or doll beginning first with the designing of a pattern that would be used to cut the fabric; after all we want the outfit to fit properly! All beautiful ensembles need some original bling to finish off the attire, so the children busily threaded beads and trinkets to make bangles and necklaces. How beautiful our special guests looked in their capes, shirts, skirts and dresses and bangles, necklaces and ear-rings too! The children finished their day of fun with an ice-block treat. We are currently taking enrolments for 2015 and beyond, so please pop in to meet Ali and Debby on our Open Day and see our beautiful kindergarten. We can be contacted on 5494 1248 Tuesday to Thursday.

Farewell to Jack Price What do you think about the new Beerwah IGA?

Rane and Matilda (3) Really nice, and very big, with heaps of choice John Jennings – Beerwah The meat presentation is excellent, the prices seem good and fair – I just hope they maintain them

Morris House Neighbourhood Centre is very sad to advise of the death of Jack Price on Sunday, October 5. Jack will be known to many in the community for his Reflexology sessions, which he has conducted at Morris House for many years and, more recently, the Qi Gong sessions he started. Jack has helped numerous clients over the years. Jack donated all money raised from Reflexology and Qi Gong to the Morris House Emergency Relief Fund which has enabled us to help our clients. Jack was loved for his cheerfulness, sense of humour and total dedication to his clients and ours. We will all truly miss Jack, not only for the help he gave us, but for his friendship and support, which he gave happily to all of us at Morris House. We extend our sincere sympathy to Jack’s family. Ann Husband Secretary Morris House NC

Re: Halls Creek Sue Fullerton – Glass House Mountains It is a great asset to the community. I hope they get great support from the locals

Karen and Siobhan Richter – Glass House Mountains Way better than the last two stores, it’s bright, airy, and there is plenty of space to walk down the aisles

The State Government requires that Halls Creek or Beerwah East be included in the SEQ Regional Plan for future development and is currently seeking public opinion in the matter. Halls Creek is an area of high ecological value with wetlands and some 40 per cent subject to 1 in 100 year flooding. Development of Halls Creek would require significant infrastructure with the potential to pose severe environmental problems for Pumicestone Passage. Beerwah East, on the other hand is more environmentally suitable for development and has close access to rail and road links and existing infrastructure in the hinterland towns. The proposed Camcos rail link to the coast passes through Beerwah East. Council is opposed to the Halls Creek Development Proposal for its environmental impact so we should all back our council and say no to Halls Creek. Letters addressed to Andrew Powell, Mark McArdle and Jeff Seeney can be dropped off at GCNews office at 16 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains, for collection and posting. J.Tucker, Glass House

Re: Tough lesson to learn

I too applied for a position with a local business (maybe the same one). As yet I have received no notification pertaining to the success or failure of my application, even though it was stated all applicants would be advised either way. Having read this letter, one wonders how many applications did not make it into the system! I suppose mine was one. All that effort for naught. Name supplied Landsborough

How lucky is Beerwah?

We have a great new streetscape with gardens, seating and art areas, and now we have the best IGA supermarket I have ever seen (maybe people will stop shopping at the nearby supermarket whose company makes huge profits from owning most of the pokie machines in Australia). Also the new Target Country store is great with everything we need in basics. Well done to the designers and all who have worked so hard to get it all ready on time. Happy Shopper Beerwah

Conditions Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

Most people operate with two different versions of reality One is factual and objective and is truly representative of the real world. The other is imaginary and subjective and represents what we would like the real world to be. This is why we rarely take actions based on objective data; we tend to live in our own imagined reality. With regards to property? Property owners rely on their own imagined reality or advice given by friends or neighbours, or only listen to information passed on by eager real estate agents. They shy away from reality because it is sometimes too difficult or too painful to accept. Result? The property is hard or even impossible to sell.

Monthly Finance Money Guide

Business Feature

Changes for small business and individuals Super 9.5 per cent – Superannuation payable to employees has increased from 9.25 per cent to 9.5 per cent from the July 1, 2014 and will remain at 9.5 per cent until June 30, 2017. New Rules, Backdated – On September 5, 2014 the government passed legislation to change the accelerated depreciation rules and backdated the changes to January 1, 2014. From January 1, 2014 going forward small business can claim an immediate write-off for assets costing $1,000.00 or less. Assets costing $6,500.00 or less acquired and installed ready for use from July 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013 are still eligible to be immediately written off, under the old rules. Accelerated depreciation rates for motor vehicles have also been changed and backdated to January 1, 2014. Therefore we can no longer claim the first $5,000.00 as an immediate tax deduction. Again, any motor vehicles acquired and ready for use purchased between July 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013 are still eligible for the $5,000.00 immediate tax deduction under the old rules. There have been a lot of changes effecting the amount small businesses can claim as tax deductions, which makes it even more important to review your business situation and business decisions during the financial year. Super Contributions – On a more positive note there have been changes to the amount of superannuation small business can claim as a tax deduction. From July 1, 2014 people aged

49 years or older can claim up to $35,000.00 and people aged 48 and under can claim up to $30,000.00 superannuation contribution as a tax deduction (this includes the SGC 9.5 per cent component) Tax Offsets – From July 1, 2014, (that is the 2014/15 year) the Dependent Spouse Tax Offset and the Mature Age Workers Tax Offset have been abolished. Also the medical rebate is being phased out. You can only claim the rebate for the 2014 financial year, if it was claimed on your 2013 tax return and you meet the eligible net medical expenses threshold. SuperStream – The new SuperStream legislation requires you to pay your employees’ super using standardised data within an approved online payment system. This means you will soon be unable to make super payments by either post or manually. The new system requires you to make

What to look for when investing in a rental home? Property investment is an increasingly popular method for people looking to supplement their wealth and provide a side stream of income to begin building a nest egg for the future. If you’re interested in taking out an investment loan and starting a property portfolio, there are a number of things to consider before pursuing any one home. For example, if you’re hoping to rent it out for a regular weekly income, here are some tips to help you choose the right property.

of whether it’s for occupation or investment. Where a home is can make or break it’s chances of being a popular choice amongst potential tenants, so take the time to research local communities carefully. Having a good selection of local amenities nearby is essential, especially in larger metropolitan areas where commuting can be aided by easy access to public transport infrastructure.

Furthermore, things like schools and Find the right neighbourhood parks in close proximity can open Location is everything when it comes your tenant pool up to families as to buying real estate - regardless well. 22

Vacancy rate figures Investigating the vacancy rates for real estate in the area you’re considering is also a good idea. After all, it’s no good buying investment property in a market already suffering from a downturn tenant interest or growth. Seeking advice about the health of the market from a seasoned professional will provide you with the insight needed to make an informed decision. A real estate agent’s expertise and experiences with local homes is invaluable and can quickly turn your investment prospects around.

These are just two things to take into mind when looking into property investment. Remember: This is a big decision towards your future, so rushing it will do no one any favours. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

SEQ Regional Plan update

Earlier this year I visited Bellflower Retirement Village at Sippy Downs and one of the main concerns raised was that residents felt that they were missing out on important information or that they were not sure where to find information. To address this I have developed a Seniors Update that I will release monthly via the Seniors page on my website www.malbrough.com.au/ topic/seniors. If you or someone you know would like a copy posted or emailed monthly please contact my office on 5493 5556 and register your interest.

In my nearly six years as the Member for Glass House, one of the most important issues affecting many people in the Glass House region is the SEQ Regional Plan. I have spoken to countless families over the years that have eagerly awaited the review of the most recent plan and can advise that submissions into the review will now be called mid-2015. I am happy to say that considerable progress has been made following extensive consultation with key stakeholders including South East Queensland (SEQ) councils. As a result the government has decided to extend the review of the regional plan into mid- 2015 to allow further time to: 1. ensure the state infrastructure plan and the SEQ land use planning framework are appropriately integrated; 2. develop an integrated Commonwealth-state environmental offsets framework for koalas in SEQ; 3. consider potential additional areas to accommodate urban growth and; 4. develop a framework to ensure planning schemes are updated to reflect the urban growth areas in the regional plan and to ensure availability of suitable urban land. Despite this process taking longer than anticipated, I am confident that those community members I have met with and spoken to over the years are aware of my commitment to seeing this plan through and ensuring we can deliver the best outcomes for Glass House. If you wish to be kept informed on any progress please contact my office on 5435 2013.

Do you know of a community organisation that has an idea for a great community project? Round One of the Australian Government’s landmark $1 billion National Stronger Regions Fund is now open. The Fund supports a range of local and regional development initiatives which can range from transport projects to the development of sports and community facilities with funding available. This is a huge opportunity for our region and I encourage any community groups to review the guidelines by visiting www.infrastructure.gov.au/ nsrf.

Green Army comes to Maleny On October 15 I attended the launch of the Green Army project at the Maleny Community Precinct. The Green Army is an Australian Government initiative and provides 17 - 24 year olds the opportunity to gain training and experience in environmental heritage and conservation fields. I was really impressed with the Green Army participants I met. They came from various backgrounds and different towns across our region and they were all excited to be given this opportunity. I am confident that their work will provide great benefit to the Maleny Community Precinct for years to come. I will keep you posted with information on the next Green Army project in the Fisher electorate to commence in 2015 – the Bells Creek Riparian Rehabilitation Project.

Andrew’s Great Walk For the fifth year I once again strapped on my walking boots and make the journey along Maleny-Kenilworth Road from Little Yabba Creek to Maleny recently. Known locally as ‘Andrew’s Great Walk’, this is the walk I like to use as a fundraising activity for Chaplains and to also reaffirm my commitment to upgrading Maleny-Kenilworth Road. This walk particularly raises money for the Chaplains at Maleny and Conondale State Schools, but I certainly believe that all of our Chaplains deserve our support so they can continue to provide a service to our students.

Caloundra and hinterland residents to get electricity price relief I’m pleased to announce the average Queensland household will save $577.00 on their power bills over the next five years under a Queensland Government plan to permanently remove the cost of the Solar Bonus Scheme from electricity prices. The $3.4 billion Strong Choices Cost of Living Fund will be used to ensure Queenslanders no longer have to subsidise the cost of solar usage through their power bills. If implemented, the change in electricity pricing will have economic and social benefits right across Queensland, taking the pressure off businesses as well as households. We have also recently launched the Strong Choices Electricity Price Relief Calculator – visit www.strongchoices.qld.gov.au/tariff/intro to see how much you can save on your electricity bills.

Translink’s proposed cuts to Beerwah bus service Do you currently use the Maleny-LandsboroughBeerwah Qconnect bus route? If so you may be surprised to read that Translink are proposing to cut zones three and four from this route, meaning Beerwah residents will have to make use of the 649 rail bus or catch the train from Beerwah to Landsborough as a connection. I am extremely disappointed Translink so far have not planned any community consultation over these proposed changes and I am calling on all residents who will be disadvantaged by these proposed changes to please contact my office as soon as possible. You can so do by emailing Caloundra@parliament. qld.gov.au or phoning my office 5491 2780. Beerwah residents deserve to be treated with respect and we need to stand as one to be heard.

Local groups secure vital funding Congratulations to Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club, Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare and Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade, who are among six groups to share in more than $115,000.00 in government grants in the Caloundra Electorate. This is part of Round 81 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, which offers one-off grants to not-for-profit organisations for things like upgrading facilities and installing muchneeded office equipment.

Part 3 in the story of the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club Mr Fullerton continued:

“The race day arrived and there were bookmakers, starters, stewards, judges and all the personnel that were required to conduct a race meeting. Of course it was necessary to provide refreshments, so marquees, tents and tent flys were erected, as there was no building, and water was boiled on a stand over an open fire. “Here we note for the first time that lady volunteers were helping the Sports Club. This work was entrusted to Mrs Burgess, Mrs Gilvear and Mrs Fullerton, who worked from early morning to late afternoon 24

|

|

OCTOBER 22 2014

in conditions which by today’s standards would be considered crude and primitive but were normal in those days. These ladies had to be conveyed in sulkies or buggies. One lady walked more than two miles there and home again after a day’s work. It is worth recording here that the work done by these ladies in the formative years of the Club was recognised and they were honoured by the granting of Life Membership in the Club.” An Honour Board affixed to the wall at the Sports Club records the Life Membership of Mrs C Gilvear, Mrs C Burgess and Mrs I Fullerton. The copy of a

letter, written to Mrs Burgess in September 1924 to confirm her Life Membership, reads: To Mrs Burgess I have the honour to inform you The Glasshouse Mts Sports Club have elected you a life-member of the Club, in recognition of services rendered. P Pearson Hon Sec, Glasshouse Mts Sports Club The next instalment of our story will focus on one particular race meeting which had tragic consequences. www.gcnews.com.au

Remedial Therapist Diane Rantall has a combination of therapies that may be of benefit to you. Bowen Therapy is a gentle soft tissue therapy, with a series of rolling moves over muscles or tendons in specific points on the body. Bowen Therapy reduces pain, increases mobility and flexibility, and invokes a relaxed calmness for the whole body. Treatments are tailored to each individual. Living Inspiring, award-winning Mumpreneur Eight years ago, Landsborough author and mother Jackie Hall would have been found sitting on the floor of her bedroom crying in devastation at the mum she had become. Jackie realised in that moment that she needed to change and began turning it all around for herself. She then began teaching other parents how to stop their stress too. Last weekend at a gala event in Melbourne, Jackie was announced the winner of the 2014 St George Banking Group Ausmumpreneur Rising Star award for the success of her business, The Parental Stress Centre. This is the fifth year for this awards program, which celebrates mums in business who are achieving outstanding success in entrepreneurship, product development, services and innovation in businesses throughout Australia. “It is such an honour to be recognised with this award and to receive the opportunity to reach even more parents so they realise the resources and support that is available for them on our website,” Jackie said. “I am so determined that no parent should ever feel the way that I did.” Jackie is the author of five parental stress books and several live and self-paced online programs that all include personalised support. These programs teach parents how to identify the cause of stress and how to alleviate it – and how to pass those lessons on to their children too. Her signature program ‘The 28 day Tame Your Temper Parenting Challenge’ (as seen on Channel Seven’s Sunrise in 2011), held as a live online group experience, attracts 200-250 parents every month, comprising of mums and dads all working together as a supportive group, to be calmer, happier parents and better role models for their kids. “A lot of parents feel so alone with what's going on for them, but when they come to The Parental

Chris Screen, Head of SME St George Banking group, and Peace Mitchell, founder of the Ausmumpreneur with Jackie Hall (centre) Stress Centre they realise just how many other parents feel just like them,” Jackie said. Jackie has touched the lives of thousands of parents, teachers, child care workers and even industry psychologists and counsellors who all acknowledge her for the practical, real information that all parents can relate to. Their company mantra is ‘Real support. Real solutions. No judgement.’ “I was so surprised to be approached by a social worker at the Ausmumpreneur awards who sought me out to tell me just how many lives I was changing and how much child abuse this information was stopping,” Jackie said. “It was such a full circle moment from where I was eight years ago, on the brink of indirect child abuse myself. It brought so much value to my own prior struggles.” With Postnatal Depression Awareness Week coming up in November, Jackie says that this award could not have come at a better time for raising awareness.

Subway Palmview

For this month’s column, Lea has asked me head along to Subway and then let you all know how I found it. When I walked in I was pleasantly surprised – the store seemed much more like an upmarket cafe than traditional sandwich bar. There were comfy tub chairs nestled around low tables, ambient pendant lighting and even an impressive stone feature wall. I dropped in on my way into the office so thought I would sample the breakfast option which consisted of a breakfast six inch sub and coffee (or juice). Being vegetarian I had poached eggs and cheese on flatbread. I don’t normally have too much for breakfast but this was a tasty and healthy option and I felt that I started my day well. Now, most people who know me are aware that

I take my coffee rather seriously, so I’m pleased to say that it was good. In keeping with the new improved decor, the new Subway is offering Australian-roasted Italian style coffee – another good start to the day! Most people are familiar with the Subway concept of dining. For those who haven’t tried it I’ll briefly outline what’s involved – basically you get to have someone freshly make your subway meal to order based on an extensive board menu that caters for most dietary options, including vegetarians like me, and the choices include a huge range of meat options. You follow five steps that include choosing the bread you’d like (from at least six freshly baked options), what type of cheese you’d like added (if any), optional extras like extra meat or avocado

– then you get to pick what salad you’d like added and then finally what sauce you’d like on top. When I was in, I counted 13 different sauce options! What I like about Subway is that you can choose exactly what you want on your sub – a fantastic option with those of us who have ‘fussy eaters’ in the family or who have special dietary requirements. Another thing I liked is that all the meals have their nutritional values indicated for those of us keeping an eye of what we eat. Finally as I’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth, I can recommend the cookies – the white chip macadamia nut definitely hit the spot.

The film is based on the book by Claire Tomalin – as part of this weekend’s Celebration of Books festival in the Maleny Community Centre. Environment Beerwah street gardens shine By Greg Brown It was great to see the thousands of people enjoying themselves at the Beerwah street celebration on Friday night. Part of the success of the area is the gardens and landscaping. Without getting involved in the hard structures that have been built, let’s have a look at some of the main garden elements that have been used. The landscape design was strongly influenced by the surrounding mountains, natural environment and rural character. The plantings were designed to contain predominantly local native species, with street tree and garden bed planting to be informal and natural in style, planted in large garden bed areas. During the whole project – which has some final touches to come yet – about 60 semi-mature trees have been planted and over 2,500 other plants used in the landscaping. The dominant street trees used are Weeping Lilly Pilly and Brush Box. These native trees to the area are attractive shade-givers which in the wild grow very large, but in landscaping have shown to stay as small to medium trees. One benefit of using these species is that once they get established and grow a bit in height, the lower branches can be skilfully pruned to provide clear line of sight underneath. The lower plants are a wide mixture of natives, including various lilly pillies, Hardenbergia, Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine, Tussock Grass, a number of different Melaleucas, and strange Casuarina called ‘Cousin It’. This ground covering She-Oak (Casuarina glauca) is a fascinating variation, which can best be seen in the garden beds out the front of the all-ability playground at Landsborough. It’s not hard to imagine why it’s called ‘Cousin It’ (from the Addams Family show). Over time, we’ll feature more aspects from the Beerwah streetscaping which combine to make it a real winner.

Green Army descends on Maleny A Green Army has descended on Maleny Community Precinct to continue conservation efforts at the 125 hectare site. The Green Army, an Australian Government initiative, provides an opportunity for young Australians aged 17-24 years to gain training and experience in environmental and heritage conservation fields. Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough recently met with Sunshine Coast Divisional Councillor Jenny McKay and Conservation Volunteers Australia members who will be coordinating the Green Army in conjunction with the Council on the precinct. Cr McKay said the Green Army would continue conservation efforts across the Maleny Community Precinct. “They’ll be on site for 19 weeks from early October,” Cr McKay said. “Work will include installing fencing, weeding and maintenance of existing plantings, additional planting across the riparian zones and constructing a walking trail. “The precinct is true community collaboration, based on conservation and the sustainable public use of the land which is owned by Sunshine Coast Council ratepayers. “The project will help restore riparian corridors, wetlands and remnant rainforest which in turn provide a habitat for our native fauna such as birds, small mammals, fish, reptiles and invertebrates. “Controlling weeds that threaten to smother and impact vegetation is another important aim of this project, to help preserve endangered flora and fauna species. “Improving community links is integral to the Maleny Community Precinct project and the site brings together a wide spectrum of community groups. “Our planning incorporates enhancing and protecting environmental values, providing community use and recreation and protecting early European heritage, and the Green Army will help us achieve that.” Conservation Volunteers Australia Queensland Manager Dennis Gannaway said the organisation was proud to be the largest service provider for the Green Army initiative In Queensland and across Australia. “We are particularly pleased to be working with the Sunshine Coast community and Council,” Mr Gannaway said. “We believe that this experience offers young people an opportunity to get involved with on-ground projects which will result in positive outcomes for the natural environment. “It will also give them a good practical background to working in the natural resource management field.”

19 Paul Place - under contract in four days

News flash from Denise Pinwill I have never truly believed the Real Estate Agent’s phrase “We have buyer’s waiting!” Believe it or not we have that situation happening right now. Beerwah, Landsborough and Glass House Mountains are desirable suburbs. Following a spate of quick sales over the last few weeks, we have many buyers waiting for properties to come on the market, mainly between $350,000 and $550,000. Four different properties have just been listed and were under contract in less than five days. Wow! Ten groups of buyers are still looking after missing out on a Landsborough property. Understandably our sellers were delighted with the prices achieved, time frame and the professionalism of the whole process. 5 Georgina Place - under contract in one day HELP! ... we need properties in all price ranges.

Life is short – live it well

As I sit here this morning writing this article I am reminded of how important it is to not let issues and grievances ruin relationships. As you know, in life, things don’t always run smoothly – sometimes people make mistakes, say the wrong thing, get selfish or hurt each other. This causes resentment, unforgiveness and in some cases hate. Then when this happens we ‘put up a wall’ to protect us from that person – plus this is often accompanied by the ‘silent treatment’, forms of aggressive behaviour, talking behind their back, etc. None of this helps anyone, in fact it makes the relationship suffer even more and the wounds feel worse. We all can think of examples where we have been in a room and witnessed people who have issues with each other. It is not pleasant is it? There is a cool verse in the Bible in Matthew GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

OCTOBER 22 2014

5:24 that I believe shows it is more important to God for us to have healthy relationships with each other than any ‘religious stuff’ that we do. It says… “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.” So, what does this mean for us? I think it means that if you have a family member or friend with whom there is some hurt due to an issue that came up, don’t waste your life ignoring it or letting it get worse. Go to that person and respectfully talk about the problem. It may be difficult, it may bring up painful things that you have been trying to avoid for some time, but for the greater benefit of your relationship it is like the saying “short term pain, long term gain”. John 8:32 says “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” I think this is true also in relationships… when people are honest with each other in a respectful way and have integrity in relationships it brings great freedom and joy. Have a great week!

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Beerwah Ladies Golf results

Contributed by Monica Dangerfield Thursday, October 16 saw 59 ladies line up for the fun game of a four ball ambrose, which I’m sure everyone enjoyed. The weather was perfect for golf. There were some very good scores, as each team gets four chances at the same shot. So pars and birdies are often achievable during this event, when they are inclined to be elusive on our regular days. In this event, everyone’s handicap gets added together and divided by eight. Winning team (pictured) are Brenda Briese, Heather Henn, Cathy Stone and Andrea Campbell with the mighty low score of 59 nett. Runners up for the day were Rose Ballard, Oriel Lyon, Cath Cherry and Josie Thistlethwaite. The pin shots were won by: No 2 – J. Thistlethwaite, C. Cherry, O. Lyon and R. Ballard. No 5 – M. Brimelow, J. Harvey, K. Gannon and M. Dangerfield. No 16 – G. Ferguson, L. Dillon, N. Annakin and M. Zonka, and No 18 – A. Campbell, C. Stone, B. Breise and H. Henn. Well done to all these ladies. Ball run down vouchers went to net score of 62 7/8th.

Glasshouse athlete Will Minns has taken out the Mulgowie Mile foot race and captured just under half of the $500.00 prize pool. The Mulgowie Gift dates back to the 1920s and is one of the oldest professional foot races on the Queensland Athletic Calendar. Will Minns, racing off a handicap of 320m, beat home his father Steve who was 80m behind off a handicap of 240m. Will said, “I knew someone was just behind me entering the straight but I could hear him blowing pretty hard and thought it sounded like Dad so I kicked and was rapt to take the win.” Both father and son are coached by London Olympic 100m relay finalist Andrew McCabe who has worked with a number of athletes in the local area including the Beegees. Local athletes are encouraged to enter the next races, to be held at Noosa on November 15, with a prize pool of $10,000.00 and then the Gold Coast on December 6 with a prize pool of $25,000.00. Entry forms are available from www.qal.org.com

Contributed by Judy Walker This is the final report from our club. We have closed on the October 17 as we were unable to continue this great club in our normal format. I will miss our fun on the green and wish all our members good luck and great bowling at whichever club they join.

Rangers Cricket Club

Contributed by Frank Doonan Second Division: Caboolture first innings 72, Glasshouse first innings 2 for 31. The wickets were shared between all the bowlers with Curtis Schofield bowling an excellent opening spell of 1-13 from 12 overs and constantly trouble all the batsmen. Justin Thompson was first change bowler and troubled Caboolture from his first ball and picked up 3-15 off 8 overs. Brock and Joel Topfer also chimed in with very good spells picking up 3-31 and 2-13 respectively. First Division: First innings Glasshouse 77 and first innings Caboolture 5-111. Under 10s: Glasshouse 52 and Maleny 47 Great effort by all the boys, with special mention to Jayden Pincott-Miller for his man of the match performance for his bowling and batting effort. U12B: Glasshouse vs Caboolture – tie 94 runs each. Lachlan Dawes and James Smith both performed well in their first game with the team today! Caboolture won the toss and sent Glasshouse out to bat. Batting: Callum Byford got us off to a nice start with a lovely 4 then had an unlucky run out to end up out on 6, Ryan Aldred top scored with 24 n/o, Curtis McAllister 15 n/o, Bowling: Curtis McAllister 2/3, Hayden McAllister 1/3, Roman De Clara 1/13. This week our fielding performance improved and we had two fantastic run outs by Lachlan Dawes and Leo De Clara. Callum Byford did a great job on wicket keeping duty along with Curtis McAllister.

looked around the shop and said, “About an hour and a half.” The guy left. The barber turned to his friend and said, “Hey, Bob, do me a favour, follow him and see where he goes. He keeps asking how long he has to wait for a haircut, but he never comes back.” A little while later, Bob returned to the shop, laughing hysterically. The barber asked, “So, where does he go when he leaves?” Bob looked up, wiped the tears from his eyes and said... “Your house.” Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah Week beginning 22/10/14

LIBRA September 23 - October 22 This new Moon solar eclipse in Scorpio on Friday focuses on money. Check your diary or your memories from 1995 to see what area you may be heading into as a repeat. As the Sun connects with your ruler, Venus, this makes you very magnetic. You can attract or acquire something you really want now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The solar eclipse in your sign on the 24th is also on the same journey with Venus and the Sun. After years of restraint and restriction you will revel in the emotional and romantic warmth of dreamy love, as Neptune adds to the flavour. Mars enters Capricorn, your co ruler, giving you a push to be successful. SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 If you have been down in the dumps lately this new Moon on Friday puts you on the road to transforming and overcoming your personal limitations. Something hidden comes to light, especially if you are in the mood for love. It will also have an element of mystery to it. A time you crave beauty and magic. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 When assertive Mars enters your sign on the 26th your physical energy gets a real boost, as does your ambitious drive. So get ready to pursue the dreams of your romantic heart under the new Moon being escorted into Scorpio by the Sun and Venus opening up a passionate new chapter in your social circle.

AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 The partial eclipse in Scorpio this week on Friday puts you on the road to transforming and overcoming a personal limitation. PISCES February 20 - March 20 This weekend for you may see absolute pure enjoyment as the passionate Scorpio eclipse on the 24th is accompanied by the Sun and Venus entering this sultry water sign. ARIES 21 March 21 - April 20 There is a partial eclipse with this new Moon on Friday 24th this week. It’s in the early degrees of Scorpio and it brings finances and relationships into focus. You could be confronted in an unusual way. Scorpio energy brings someone with a chip on their shoulder, but keep your focus on good public relations. TAURUS April 21 - May 21 Most Taureans will find the new Moon this week intensifying their desires. Since Venus and the Sun also enter your partnership sector, an honest look is necessary to discuss getting the best out of your relationships. With Mercury in retrograde motion you should review your life from April of this year.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21 With Mercury still in retrograde until the 25th this planet should help you re-establish the love of your choice and reawaken your creative talents. This month’s second eclipse in Scorpio on the 24th is surrounded with a Sun and Venus conjunction. This eclipse is a wakeup call to overcome inactive ways. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Feeling centred this week you may revel in Friday’s new Moon eclipse in Scorpio. You will find love with affection, devotion and pleasure. LEO July 23 - August 22 Mercury has been backtracking into the sign of Libra from the 10th and will now go forward this weekend. Perhaps a mystery that prevails at home will be resolved. The second eclipse this week is a solar one in Scorpio on the 24th. These emotionally-rich planetary aspects connect with family members. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 This week will see the second eclipse of the month in Scorpio on the 24th and since Venus and the Sun also enter this sign you will find the right words that can reveal hidden emotions and make you and others more willing to explore the heart of the issues on the table with satisfactory truth and authenticity.
