ith ANZAC Day this Saturday, we couldn’t go past a photograph of members of our own 5th Light Horse Maleny Troop on this week’s cover. They are a dedicated group of volunteers and their horses, who participate in many local public events, ceremonies and marches throughout the year, demonstrating Light Horse skills and dress. Not surprisingly with this year marking the ANZAC Centenary they are being kept very busy. We caught up with some of their members last Saturday, and as always it was great to see the pride they take in their part of keeping the memory of the Light Horse alive. We have the complete list of all local ANZAC events on page 5. If you take any great photos of the services / marches on Saturday, make sure you email them through to me at lea@gcnews.com.au or private message me on the Glasshouse Country News Facebook page and I will keep sharing them with the rest of the community throughout the day. Regards, We will remember them.

Local News Cliffy’s Cup returns home A special piece of history will return to the Colac Otway Shire this month when a cup belonging to the late ultramarathon legend Cliff Young is brought home. The cup will be hand-delivered by the Powers family of Queensland, who adopted Young as their honorary grandfather, and crewed for him on some of his later marathon runs, including several attempts to circumnavigate Australia. Cliffy, as he is affectionately known, shuffled into the history books and local hearts when he won the Westfield Sydney to Melbourne marathon as a 61-year-old. The unassuming Beech Forest potato farmer, who trained in gumboots on the hills of the Otways, eclipsed a field of professional runners in the famous 1983 race by running through the night with minimal sleep, crossing the line about 10 hours ahead of his nearest competitor. After his landmark win, Westfield awarded Young with a ceremonial cup acknowledging his achievements. Later in life, Young gave the cup to his surrogate granddaughters, twins Paula and Bridgette Powers, and asked them to take care of the precious gift he received from his community. “Cliff told the girls to only polish it once a year so the engraving doesn’t fade,” the twins’ mother Helen Powers said.

The Powers family have decided that the cup belongs in the place where Cliffy carved out his running career, and will hand it to the Mayor and councillors on April 22. Mayor Frank Buchanan said council was honoured to receive the cup and had negotiated to have it displayed at the Colac History Centre at COPACC. Cr Buchanan said Cliffy’s memory was treasured in Colac Otway. “Driving through the Otways, locals would always keep an eye out for Cliffy’s trademark shuffle,” he said.

Courage and sacrifice remembered By Lea Parkes
A very proud group of community members came together at the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital last Saturday to mark the official opening of the recently completed ‘Walk of Remembrance’. The project was an initiative of the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services with funding for the project coming from the Australian Governments Anzac Centenary Grant. The walkway is a commemoration of the courage and sacrifice of the 90 locals who enlisted from this area and served their country in WW1 between 1914 and 1918. The spectacular centrepiece of the walk is five sandstone sculptures representing the Eternal Flame, the Rising Sun, the image of the nurse and medical symbol, and a plaque listing the names of each of the local soldiers. Along the walkway there are a number of individual stones bearing the names of the 25 soldiers who sadly did not return. When Federal Member for Fisher, Mal Brough along with Chair of the Hospital Auxiliary Glennis Manning cut the ribbon, they had an audience of around 200. The crowd was made up of many proud relatives of the soldiers who were being honoured, some who still live locally, and others that had travelled especially to attend the event. There were also a large number of representatives from the numerous community groups who had contributed to creating the project.
Glennis Manning, Colin Sinclair pushing his relative Miss Daphne Beacom, Lynda Burgess with Mal Brough leading the way by taking the first walk on the pathway In true Maleny style, there were quite a few local groups that had played their part in bringing it together, including the Maleny Apex Club, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Menshed, Garden Club, Masonic Lodge, RSL Sub-branch, Maleny Arts and Crafts – Woodcrafters as well at the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild. There were also Australian Conservation volunteers, and the RSL (QLD) branch, as well as many other individuals who donated funds, enthusiasm, time and skills. Combined with the work undertaken by artists Fiona and Craig Medson, Stone Sculpture artist Wayne Markwort, and Landscape Consultant Tom Hajncl and his team from Amber Leaf Landscaping, collectively they have created a unique reminder of the past, and a lovely spot for the patients and visitors to the hospital to relax and enjoy today.

Name change for college By Sandy Johnson
Glasshouse Country Christian College was only built in 2000, but in 15 years, a lot has changed. GCCC grew from a little school of 15 students meeting in a couple of demountable buildings in 2000, to almost 1,000 students in modern purpose built facilities in 2015. The College was originally named after the area i.e. Glasshouse Country Christian College but many found the four words and eight syllables to be a bit of a mouthful and difficult to remember. This became increasingly evident as the College began winning more dance eisteddfods, sporting events, academic and cultural competitions. The announcers and journalists covering the events continually misread, mispronounced or forgot the College name all together. Rather than persevere with the problem, the College decided that this was a good opportunity to simplify its name and freshen up its logo at the same time. The new name is simply Glasshouse Christian College so the only change is dropping the word ‘Country’. However, this small change makes it one quarter shorter than the old name and a lot simpler to remember. The new logo has been modernised and simplified. It keeps the mountains to show the College’s identity in the heart of the Glass House Mountains and makes the eagle more prominent. The cross is a new addition that brings all the logo elements together visually and spiritually. The cross symbolises the College motto of ‘growing in faith and knowledge’ and its commitment to Biblical values. The cross is in the same colour as the College name to further strengthen the connection between the two elements. Principal Mike Curtis is very happy with the new design. “We loved our old logo but it had a lot of detail and was difficult to read the College name,” Mr Curtis said. “I believe the new logo will stand the test of time.”
Celebrate Beerwah committee established The Celebrate Beerwah group met last Thursday at the CWA Hall in Beerwah. At the meeting they voted in favour of incorporation and to elect a committee. The group’s President, Judy Tomlinson said the meeting was very upbeat and positive, thanks to those who attended and in particular to those that have taken on the positions on the committee. These include: vice president – Debbie Ives, secretary – Maree Anderson, treasurer – Beckie Newing and assistant treasurer – Roger Reilly. Judy said Celebrate Beerwah is about celebrating and promoting Beerwah and Glasshouse Country. “Our region is unique and deserves a dynamic group to support its potential through the right events,” she said. Judi can be contacted via email address, info@celebratebeerwah.org, or on her mobile number which is 0408 445 988.

Beerburrum – proud and loud Have you noticed the signage on Steve Irwin Way announcing ‘Welcome to Beerburrum’? There’s two – one on each side of the Beerburrum Road intersection. The lovely large colour signs announce to travellers that they have reached Beerburrum, where they will find a historic town and the Flinders Trail. The photo is taken from the top of Mt Beerburrum looking out over the other iconic mountains. If you haven’t climbed Mt Beerburrum to see the vista, you really should, as it has a concrete path all the way and the views are spectacular. Division 1 Councillor Rich Baberowski is delighted to have used his Divisional funds to make the signs a reality. “The idea came from the Beerburrum locals when they had a series of grass-roots community meetings in the Beerburrum Hall,” he said. “From those meetings, a taskforce was formed to work on a number of ideas and projects to advance Beerburrum as a destination, and to promote the appeal of the area. “The group decided on the wording, design and images on the sign. I’m particularly impressed that they have incorporated themes to position the town as a historic place, a place of beauty and to link closely the unique connection with Matthew Flinders and his 1799 expedition to the area,” Cr Baberowski said. “This is the first step in telling the story of Beerburrum, and in cooperation with the community group, I am looking forward to seeing

Significance of the ANZAC legend honoured To kick off Heritage Month, Councillor Rick Baberowski officially launched the ‘Far From This Land’ exhibition which commemorates the First World War 100th anniversary at Landsborough Museum. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the launch of the exhibition was particularly significant because it acknowledges our Sunshine Coast heroes who fought for their nation. Landsborough Historic Society President Rosey Field with member for Fisher Mal Brough
Members of Harry Hapgood’s (who was featured in the exhibition) family, son Ken Hapgood, granddaughter Colleen Farrow, daughter Carol Schneider and niece Gwen Davis
Council’s Heritage Services Co-ordinator Louise Bauer with Cr Rick Baberowski
Museum Curator Peter Anderson with Bernard and Anita Verwayen of Mooloolah
Councillor Baberowski said Far From This Land was the main part of a brand new exhibition and entry display at the Landsborough Museum, which also received Queensland Anzac Centenary Grants program funding. Member for Fisher, Mal Brough said having seen the ‘Far From This Land’ display at the Landsborough Museum, he wanted to congratulate the volunteers for again capturing our local history in such a great way.
“The display focuses on the First World War and its impact on the Sunshine Coast by following the stories of four locals. It is a truly moving display and I encourage everyone to visit and support the museum,” he said. The exhibition is open to the public from Sunday, April 19 to April 2016. The Landsborough Museum is open from 9.00am to 3.00pm Wednesday to Friday and Sunday. Admission fees apply.

Laurie Evans support Young Diggers By Sonia Clark In the lead up to ANZAC day this year, the team at Laurie Evans Beerwah have decided to support the worthwhile ‘Young Diggers’ cause. Collection tins have been placed in their office which they hope will raise much-needed funds that they can then forward to the organisation. This initiative is the brainchild of newest staff member Jason Carroll, who joined the Laurie Evans team having recently moved here from the U.K. Previously Jason had been a manager with the Royal British Legion, which supports armed forces personnel. Familiar with the benefits that ongoing emotional and practical support provides veterans, Jason wanted to do something locally - and given the timely nature of ANZAC day, the idea to organise a collection was born.
Renee, Rod, Lorainne, Tamara, Jason, Brittney, Tamara and Judy
The main objective of Young Diggers is to assist veterans transition from military to civilian life by offering support in what can sometimes be a challenging and difficult adjustment. One of the key programs that the service provides is the ‘Young Diggers Dog Squad’ which trains dogs to assist veterans with combat stress and physical and mental illness, including PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). By providing ‘dog medicine’, the animals help diggers in their healing journey by providing companionship and an external focus. This hugely beneficial program is run entirely by volunteers. As well as helping Defence individuals and families better cope, the program also saves the lives of many rescued dogs, that deserve a second chance. Another member of the Laurie Evans team, Lorainne Arnesen, is passionate about a Bull Arab the Pawfect Companion (BATPC) a charity that rescues and has supplied Bull Arabs to this very program. Staff at Laurie Evans will be wearing red poppies to promote the cause, so drop into the office and make a donation at Shop 10 / 60 Simpson Street, Beerwah. For more information about Young Diggers see www.youngdiggers.com.au

Emergency relief changes Funds for rural firies Contributed by Ted Prickett Due to the reduction in the times when emergency relief (including food) is available at BADYACC in Beerwah (two hours on Mondays and Thursdays) the Glasshouse Country Anglican Community Emergency Food Bank is now focusing its efforts on supplying Morris House with food donated by church members. Whilst this may not be quite as convenient to some, most people seem to have vehicles. Food will still be provided to BADYACC as the demand arises. Morris House is located at 478 Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough and operates from Monday to Friday, from 9.30am to 1.00pm.
The ‘Caloundra Court No 12, Order of the Amaranth’ hold monthly meetings in the Beerburrum Community Hall. The group’s members raise funds through luncheons and other activities to be able to make a donation to a local charity. The year 2014 - 2015 their Royal Matron Wendy Pollard and Royal Patron Keith Jones chose the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade for their donation totalling $1,323.00.

Rotary Bowel Scan The Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains is pleased to be participating in the Rotary Bowel Scan program again this year. The kits for this year will see a change in the program, as we are adopting a new kit based on newer medical technology that makes the kit easier to use. The kit is distributed by Clinical Genomics who are providing substantial support to local Rotary Bowelscan Committees to ensure the continuing success of this important community health initiative. Kits will be on sale this year from May 1 - 31 inclusive at a cost of $15.00. Some of the advantages of the new kit include the fact that there is no dietary requirement. Clients return the completed test kits in a REPLY PAID envelope and should be able to expect a speedy result. Road safety advice Ken and Susanne Steyn from Landsborough Driver Training aim to prepare their drivers to be both confident and knowledgeable, and to enjoy the experience and reality of our roads. A key point to remember when learning to drive is that a solid knowledge of road rules is essential (see http://tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Queensland-RoadRules/Road-rules-refresher.aspx). While the current Learners License Test is a written multiple-choice questionnaire, the real challenge is in applying these road rules out on the road. For example, when in the car for the first time, not only do people have to learn to physically drive (using accelerator, brake etc.) but to do so while everything is flying past at 60-80km/h or more! With an accredited instructor and a car with a dual pedal system, it’s easier to intervene when required as well as demonstrating techniques. A big plus is being able to do this in a calm environment. Ken and Susanne actively encourage parents or friends to come along for the first time - which as well as providing support for the trainer driver, can also demonstrate how the instructor deals with situations on the road. The first lesson focuses on the ‘system of vehicle control’ which is a critical component of sensible and non-aggressive driving. Another point to consider is that it may be a good idea to have a few lessons while you are completing your 100 logbook hours to refresh your skills and to correct any bad habits that may have developed. Ten hours of driving with an accredited driver trainer equals 30 hours in the logbook. To find out more, contact Ken or Susanne on drive@ldt.net.au or 0427 997 233, alternatively check out their website at LDT.net.au where you can also easily make a lesson booking.

locals supporting locals Coast Imagewear Mooloolah local Tracey Hallink has recently taken over ownership of Coast Imagewear, which for over 14 years, has specialised in embroidery services for workwear and uniforms as well as promotional items and personalised gifts. With flexible hours that suited caring for a young family, Tracey leapt at the chance to take over the long running business earlier this year. Bringing her strong business background along with a keen personal interest in embroidery to the business, Coast Imagewear is now owned and operated right here in the heart of Mooloolah. Currently the bulk of her work caters to schools, sports clubs and small local businesses.
You can either supply the garment or purchase it from the extensive store catalogue range. A huge variety of items can be embroidered including t-shirts, caps and hats, sports bags, towels and bathrobes, to name a few. Tracey prides herself on an approachable ‘can do’ attitude, and one of her main points of difference is that there is no minimum quantity required, which is perfect for personalised gifts for all kinds of occasions. Keep an eye out for the online shop coming soon, and for more details check out www.coastimagewear.com.au or like them on Facebook. Phone 5494 7741 or 0447 453 555.

Wonderful station master
We have been selling ANZAC Memorabilia at Beerwah rail station where we met Phil our new station master. He’s a pleasant, helpful young man and an asset to Queensland rail, how lucky are we to have him at Beerwah. A big ‘thank you’ to you. Margaret and Coral Beerwah RSL Ladies Auxiliary
Editor’s note
Re: Not rocket science In last week’s edition a letter was printed from a Glass House Mountains local who was more than a little frustrated at not having a letter delivered to a property on Saraha Road, which the regular postie would have been able to recognise, even though the street number was not included. We had a couple of phone calls from people who have previously been posties. While they didn’t want to write letters, they did explain that most readers would be unaware that when a letter goes to the sorting centre in Nambour, it would be stamped with ‘insufficient address’ meaning that – it probably wouldn’t have even got to the postie to deliver.
Hall of shame
Here is aphoto that shows how shamefully our community is being treated by the NBN. The image depicts the recently erected tower in Kenilworth. It was advised that the owners of this site are two 90-yearold ladies. NBN is now getting ready to radiate the township and its visitors with microwaves. Maleny hinterlands remain on request for ‘Towerless NBN’ please. Jim Straker Maleny
Conditions Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.
Walk the talk
The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is calling on the community to unite during May to spread the message that together we need to ‘Walk the talk’ and say NO to domestic violence one step at a time’ as part of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month held annually. Centre Co-ordinator Catherine Ovenden said they were pleased that the Zonta Club of Blackall Range, the Maleny Uniting Church, the Maleny Chamber of Commerce, Pia Buick Real Estate, Maleny IGA, Maleny Credit Union, White Ribbon Australia, and Glasshouse Country & Maleny News have already put their support behind this campaign. Please contact Catherine if you would like to be involved. A range of activities are planned throughout May, one of these will be a community street walk to be held on Thursday, May 14 gathering in Tesch Park at 11.30am. Organisers are hoping for a big turn out to walk the main street, reinforcing this important message: ‘Say No to Domestic Violence and Yes to Respect’. Street walkers are invited to have a special community lunch at the Neighbourhood Centre afterwards. Local songwriter Steph will be penning ‘One more Song’ to perform on the day which she will be teaching people before the walk and is asking for people with ideas for verses to contribute - please come along to the planning meetings on Tuesday’s at 10.30am at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Maleny Men’s Forum have also booked Maple Street kiosk during Domestic Violence and Family Violence Prevention Week. You will be able to recognise the fellas as they will be wearing their ‘Say yes to Domestic Peace’ T-shirts on the day. Keep an eye out for more details of the activities planned which will be included in GC&M News in the coming weeks and check out the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Facebook page. 16

Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley We have welcomed several new Volunteer Ambassadors to the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information Centre this month. Their welcome started with a great tradition, our annual Trade Show, an event that encourages both tourism operators and Volunteer Ambassadors to attend. This event connects the two groups and shares over 50 updates from new and existing businesses. This year, the Trade Show was held at Aussie World, a great central venue for the coast where they’ve also recently added two new attractions/rides – The Illusionarium and the Bug Run. The centre played host to Queensland Parks and Wildlife in March, and 40 Volunteer Ambassadors attended to gain up-to-date news on the National Parks. We found out about local walks and tracks, the great walk, it’s falls, and much more. This activity has paved the way for a good relationship in the future; ensuring visitors to the region get the most up-to-date information. Finally, May is officially ‘honey’ month in Queensland. Here at the centre we are supporting this by having a display from our local supplier Dale Ihle. Towards the end of May, we will organise an information session on the local bee keeping organisation, so keep an eye out for details. During the month we will have our honey and honeycomb on sale, plus a selection of beeswax candles and melts. Beeswax if you have not had the pleasure before, makes a wonderful candles and melts. As always call in for a chat if you are interested in joining us as a volunteer.
The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information centre is located at Settler's Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains and is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 4.00pm
Police Beat with Constable Susan Lowndes Blue Light Thanks to everyone who attended the Blue Light Dance Party on March 13, it was a huge success. We haven't decided on the date for our next event, but I'll keep you posted! Thanks also to the local businesses that support us, including Beerwah IGA who have been a constant support since we started and Woolworths Beerwah, also Australia Zoo, Big Kart Track and Aussie World who generously donate for our lucky door prizes.
Keep left How well do you know your road rules? Do you know that you must keep left if you are travelling on a road which has more than one lane, and a speed limit of more than 80km/h? You should only move into the right hand lane to overtake another vehicle. The penalty for not keeping left is $68.00 and two demerit points. For our local roads, this means any time you are travelling on the Bruce Hwy and through the 90km\h zone at the northern end of Steve Irwin Way. Keeping left allows traffic to flow more smoothly. Another important point to remember when you are driving, is to make sure you give way to emergency vehicles. The Police, Ambulance and Fire services are sometimes required to get to a job in the shortest possible time and this is why our vehicles are fitted with lights and sirens. When the lights are on it is a signal that you should pull over and let the vehicle past. The penalty for failing to give way to an emergency vehicle is $265.00 and three demerit points. If you see an emergency service vehicle coming up behind you and it has it's lights and sirens activated you should pull to the side immediately, do not wait until the vehicle is right behind you as the emergency service vehicle is likely to be travelling considerably faster than you. By pulling over early, it lets us know that you have seen us, although it may add a few seconds to your drive, it may in fact save a life. www.gcnews.com.au

Permanent reminders Trench Art is the term that is given to pieces of work created by soldiers and civilians during all wars dating back to the Napoleonic wars. It can include jewelley made from shell casings, carvings on bullet shells and embroidery. The Beerwah RSL Women’s Auxilliary recently recovered such a piece of trench art that was donated by the Swan family to the RSL. It is the embroidered badge of the AIF, including wrong spelling, and the words 'Souvenier of Egypt 1916' on it. The stencil can still been seen beneath the embroidery and it has fine lace around the boarder. It has been reframed by Jo at Frame d'Art and represented to the RSL on behalf of the Swan family. It will be on display at the Beerwah RSL.
Contributed by Roz Kuss Group members ‘adopted’ WWI Diggers on the Adopt A Digger Project website, which is about honouring and remembering those from the Sunshine Coast who enlisted, fought, died or survived WWI. At the April general meeting, researchers shared the stories they discovered. Some of the Diggers were from pioneer Sunshine Coast families. Sadly, our members learnt of the early deaths of young men; a number with unknown graves, and surprisingly, one even involved in artistic reminders of their presence in England – a Rising Sun and a map of Australia carved in the chalk hills near their training fields. They were chronicles of the good, the brave and resourceful, as well as the promotions and the punishments, mainly for being AWOL, especially when ‘out of the line’, and in England when recovering from battle wounds. Of those adopted by CFHRI, most received the 1914/15 Star, Victory Medal & British War Medal. Whilst all were brave, a Military Medal for exceptional bravery was granted to Stanley George Robinson, George Francis Reuben Nicklin and Thomas Bubbers. To find out more about the project their website is www.adoptadigger.org
Friends of Bankfoot House Bankfoot House property under threat It was February 1911 when Clementina Burgess received a formal letter from the Secretary of the Commonwealth Government Department of Home Affairs (Melbourne) informing her that her Bankfoot House property was to be acquired for military purposes. It was subsequently learned the area was to be used for military manoeuvres. The letter was received just over three years after the death of her father, William Grigor. The Secretary’s letter also enquired the price at which Clementina was prepared to sell the property to the Commonwealth. Clementina’s reply was swift in saying the property was worth three thousand five hundred pounds but emphasised that in stating such a price, she was in no way desirous of selling. Eight months passed and Clementina had heard nothing more. However she was aware that tenders had been called by the Department of Public Works in Brisbane to clear vegetation from the surrounding area. In October 1911 she decided to write to the Prime Minister, the Honorable Andrew Fisher, saying she would not allow contractors to clear her land whilst she had heard nothing from the Department of Home Affairs. The reply came the following month saying no decision had been taken and the matter was being held in abeyance. We believe Clementina received no further communication from the Commonwealth over the next 50 years. Events leading up to the declaration of war in www.gcnews.com.au
1914 no doubt altered government priorities. Compulsory military training had been introduced by the Labor Government on July 1, 1911 but Andrew Fisher’s government was narrowly defeated at the federal election in 1913. Fisher wasn’t in opposition for long. His government was re-elected in 1914. Handwritten copies of the original letters to and from the Commonwealth Government are held in the Bankfoot House Collection.

The event was well attended and BADYACC was buzzing with activity. The day was jam packed with activities including games, spray painting, a horizontal bungee, face painting, free hair wrapping and funky music from a live DJ. Elected
Representitives Mal Brough
Federal Member for Fisher P: 5493 5556 I have dedicated this week’s column to the most significant event on our nation’s calendar, ANZAC Day. This Saturday marks 100 years since the original Anzacs began their Gallipoli campaign during the First World War. On ANZAC Day the Sunshine Coast will pause to remember the men and women who helped forge our national identity. It is important that we also honour our current diggers – more than 2,700 of them who are deployed on overseas operations as we speak. Our Hinterland communities are steeped in Anzac history. I encourage you to attend one of the ceremonies in Beerwah, Landsborough, Glass House Mountains, Maleny, Montville and Palmwoods to remember and commemorate those who have served and continue to serve to keep that which we hold so dear – our values and freedoms. For more information on services in the electorate visit www.malbrough.com.au/Anzac-Day-2015
Local groups benefit from Anzac grants Congratulations to the following organisations who received funding at part of the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Programme: • Maleny Hospital Auxiliary for their WW1 memorial walk • Maleny Fifth Light Horse Regiment for Anzac Centenary light horse troop events • Navy Cadets for the permanent display of a painting to recognise the Centenary • Montville Village Association for the restoration of the memorial gates and name plaques in Memorial Close • Peachester History Committee for WWI memorial plaques at the Peachester Cemetery • Sunshine Coast Concert Band for reproduction of the ‘Our Country’s Call’ DVD • QEarth for the book ‘Pineapples and promises: the history and legacy of Beerburrum soldier resettlement’ Glasshouse Christian College also received a grant as part of the ‘Saluting Their Service’ commemorations programme for an Anzac Centenary exhibition at the school.
Andrew Powell
State Member for Glass House P: 5435 2013 Report a Roadside – campaign going well Thank you to those people in our community who have contacted me to report any weed issues or overgrown vegetation along our Main Roads. I have had plenty of feedback from all corners of Glass House and this has been communicated to the local Transport and Main Roads (TMR) office on a weekly basis. I am aware that quite a few of the issues that had been reported before Easter have in fact now been attended to which is great to see. I am also aware that many still remain and I will continue to work with TMR on these. I would still like to urge community members to keep me informed on any further weed or vegetation issues that you see popping up in our community so we can get TMR to respond as soon as possible.
#Powell4GlassHouse – What I am fighting for During the last few months I have had countless people in Glass House contact me with things they would like to see delivered in our community. There is no shortage of projects or funding possibilities we can work on together and my challenge as the local Member will be to ensure I work as hard as I can to accommodate the needs of people in all 20 of the individual townships that make up the Glass House electorate. The Glass House ‘Fighting For’ wishlist will continue to be a work in progress and anything you identify in your community can be added to the list. All suggestions are welcome at any time so feel free to email my office as you identify something we can work on delivering for your patch – glass.house@parliament.qld. gov.au. Later this year I will be launching my new website and all of the ‘Fighting For’ wishlist items will be available at a glance for people to see. Stay tuned for more information.
Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra P: 5491 2780 The meaning of ANZAC; Australian New Zealand Army Corps. It is so much more than the written word the literal meaning; it is the very soul of the men, the heroic nature of the event and the sadness of loss. The ANZAC Spirit is what we have come to recognise and honour every year. Army, Navy, Air Force, Gunners, Commanders, Nurses, Chefs, Tactical Specialists, linguists and many more titles of our Defence force members all culminate into one thing, defending Australia. Defending our way of life. Australians are renowned across the globe for many things, great people, fun people, and heroic people. Travel anywhere and Australians are always well received. Yet it is a sense of responsibility or a sense of mateship that has seen many of our young men go to war. Gone to war in conflicts that we should or should not have participated in depending on your view, and on your generation. Regardless of the reasoning or decision making of the day that took us to war we should always strive to ensure that our community is accurately educated on the events that have made it possible for us to live the lifestyle we enjoy. Surfing, hinterland drives, beach camping, bushwalking, fresh food, clean water, education, telephones, computers, cars, these are just some of the things that as Sunshine Coast residents we are able to enjoy freely without being subject to going through military check points, or being asked what religion we are. Our community is doing the decent and honourable thing in honouring our Defence members, both past and present. People will attend ANZAC services this year in record numbers holding in their hearts the images of so many men – younger than them – who are brothers in a land so far away. This ANZAC day I would like to say thank you to those men and women who have and continue to defend our country, and our community for keeping the ANZAC spirit alive. LEST WE FORGET

3 tips for creating a budget Most of us try to avoid looking too carefully at our spending habits. Not only can it be eye-opening, but it can be a bit unsettling - especially if your day-to-day costs have gone a bit overboard.
1. Go through your finances To get the right balance between spending and saving, you need to understand where you can make improvements.
To keep your finances in check and the repayments on your home loan ticking over, it’s worth setting up a budget.
First and foremost, you’ll need to figure out where your money is going. Take a look at bank and credit card statements, as well as paperwork like energy bills and supermarket receipts.
It can be one of the most effective ways to manage your spending and help pay off your mortgage that bit quicker.
You’ll probably have a record of mortgage repayments and other debts you’re paying off, so include these in your calculations.
Keep these points in mind when putting together a successful budget.
2. Work out the necessities From this point you can start to
www.gcnews.com.au
prioritise what goes in and out of your accounts. Some payments are absolutely necessary, while others you might be able to cut down on. There will also be variable payments and fixed charges. For example, your power bill can change from month to month, but mortgage payments aren’t likely to shift that much. Of course, it’s important to be realistic. While paying off your home loan can be a guiding goal, it shouldn’t stop you from enjoying life. Your budget should accurately reflect how you spend your hard-earned money, so be honest with yourself. 3. Look at the big picture If your income is outweighing your expenses, you’re on the right track but if you’re like many Australians
Robes Bathrooms Appliances Cut & Edge and find you are falling short, it could be time to change your habits. Once you’ve got your expenses sorted, you can start to see the bigger picture and figure out what little luxuries you can afford to limit. With these tools in your back pocket, you’ll be well on the way to paying off your mortgage.

In the Garden
Extreme Gardening for Ekka
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network
Plant of the Month
Yellow pittosporum
Pittosporum revolutum One of a number of Pittosporums found in the local area, this plant is a common shrub of a variety of habitats from coastal wallum to open woodland and moist gullies. Pittosporum may be a small one metre shrub or four to five metre small tree, depending on soil type and moisture level. The plant is usually sparse of foliage in the bush but in the home garden can be pruned to an attractive dense shape. The leaves have wavy edges and form whorled clusters at the ends of the branches. The new shoots and young leaves are covered with a fine layer of hairs giving them a rusty appearance. The lightly perfumed cream, tubular flowers appear in spring and are followed by warty, yellow fruit which on maturity open to expose sticky red seeds. These attractive fruit are popular with birds which perform a great service spreading the seeds. Apparently Aborigines also ate the seed, though they are supposed to have a bitter taste.
The Ekka countdown has begun with the Royal Queensland Show’s Giant Pumpkin Competition set to tip the scales in 2015. Entries are now open to the larger than life competition which will once again welcome the true heavyweights of the veggie patch. It is extreme gardening at its best, with farmers and amateur gardeners alike competing for the coveted blue ribbon and the prestigious title of Champion Heaviest Pumpkin of Show. Last year’s winner from Minden, Geoff Frohloff, took out the top gong with his whopping 204kg pumpkin. It was a sweet victory after months of growing the enormous pumpkin and showering it with TLC (and Geoff’s top secret mulch). With the success of the 2014 competition and the sheer size of the pumpkins, the iconic Ekka event is once again being held outside of the Ekka dates to take advantage of premium pumpkin growing season. Be prepared to be amazed when the giant orange vegetables roll in for weighing and awards on Saturday, May 9. GC&M News will keep you posted on the results.

Chris Johnson - Glasshouse Country Baptist Church and sober about things. They took their church very seriously. And God’s verdict is he hates it. He wishes the people would go home. God rejected their festivals and church because the people didn’t mean it. What the people did in the rest of their lives didn’t match their words or what they were doing in church. Frankly on Good Friday, and Christmas lots of people come out to do the religious thing. They go to church, even though God really has nothing to do with the rest of their lives. And God’s verdict - please stay home, don’t do this to me because I hate it. I know your hearts and they are not in tune with me. One day I would like to have the courage to say that on Good Friday, if you are here today and have ignored God with the rest of your lives, next time please don’t come. God doesn’t like you being here. But before I point at others it’s a warning to me to check my own life and heart out and make sure that God cannot say that of me. In the meantime I am starting to work on next Easter’s sermon.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship I read a book once about letters you want to write as a minister but then have to shred. This is a genuine letter a friend wanted to write many years ago. “Dear ……thank you for singing at ….. wedding. My family has not laughed that much in a long time. As a matter of fact, the pew shook because we were laughing so hard. Your yellow outfit enhanced your voice - you looked like and sung like my pet budgerigar. With much love… That’s what you think but you know you can’t say it, so you shred the letter. As a clergyman there are sermons like that – sermons you want to preach but know you have to shred. This is the talk I wanted to give on Good Friday but knew it had to be shredded. It comes from a passage in the Old Testament Amos 5:21. There God says ‘I hate, I reject your festivals, nor do I delight in your solemn festivals…. Take away the noise of your songs, but let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an every flowing stream.’ Religion back when Amos first wrote these words was just the same as it is today. The people then went to church - they sung lots of songs, they held festivals and were very sombre

Judo win for Ben
Local judo enthusiast Ben Lewis from Glass House Mountains came away from the recent Queensland International Open Judo Championships with a first place in the Under 66kg category. Ben, who belongs to the Maleny Judo Club, competed in the Brisbane tournament in midMarch. Being the reigning 2014 Queensland State Champion in his age and weight category, Ben’s performance bodes him well for his tilt at the Goodwill Games at Lismore in June. From there, Ben is training towards the Australian Championships in October, which will lead into the Commonwealth Games selection process.

Their waitress, taking another order at a table a few paces away, noticed that the man was slowly sliding down his chair and under the table, with the woman acting unconcerned. The waitress watched as the man slid all the way down his chair and out of sight under the table. Still, the woman dining across from him appeared calm and unruffled, apparently unaware that her
dining companion had disappeared. After the waitress finished taking the order, she came over to the table and said to the woman, "pardon me, ma'am, but I think your husband just slid under the table." The woman calmly looked up at her and replied firmly, "No he didn't. He just walked in the door." Submitted by Sarah, Glass House Mountains
