ell that’s the year done and dusted, the countdown is complete – and it’s time to close down the computer one last time. Generally this column is the very last thing I write each year, and my one chance to say thanks for a job well done to the whole team who together bring you the paper each week. So that includes all of our office based staff, as well as all our catalogue inserts and delivery team. What I appreciate most is the pride and commitment that you all take in doing your individual jobs – so that together each week we contribute to making our communities just that little bit stronger. And while all of us are getting paid (maybe not movie star money) for what we do, I really appreciate all of the community members who regularly contribute stories, columns, notices, letters to the Editor, and this year to the Maleny community, who have sent an amazing amount of items for inclusion into what is now the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. And last but not least, our advertisers – who through the advertising dollars spent, give us the opportunity to share your news, so remember when you are thinking about spending money – that spending it locally, particularly with our advertisers, helps keep our communities strong. So, on that note – a big thankyou out to everyone who is part of the paper – and here’s hoping you all have a lovely festive season. Regards,

Help build Lotus House

Maleny artist Sara Thompson, who runs Art and Create Studio, has set up a retail space next to her art studio on Maple Street with proceeds going towards building a Community Centre in rural Siem Reap in Cambodia.

‘Lotus House’ is an initiative of Sara’s parents, Carol and Jeff Morrell, who have been travelling back and forth throughout the Cambodian region for the last five years. They fell in love with the people and culture of the rural area. Their vision is to build a community centre for a small village in rural Siem Reap which will help promote health, education and training for the 150 or so local villagers. To date, a number of fundraising ventures have been undertaken to support the creation of the centre and the retail shop called Wild Mother will sell ethical fashion from the ‘Flowers for Audrey’ clothing line, creative pieces and Fair Trade products to support the cause. Currently the shop is building up its stock lines but will be open by appointment during this stocking up period. Sara’s sister Emelia has just graduated from Maleny High and instead of going to schoolies has been saving up to head over to Cambodia later this month to help build the Centre. Sara’s mum Carol has a health industry background working in both nursing and aged care and Sara’s dad, Jeff comes from a building background. Jeff already has plans for the Centre drawn up and the family are travelling over to the village a few days after Christmas to commence the building project.

Plans for the Centre include setting it up as an eco friendly establishment and instigating a number of healthcare and social enterprise ventures to empower the people of the village. Some of the ventures include establishing a sewing circle and creating silk paintings and authentic arts and crafts that can be used to create income for the villagers. If you would like to find out more about the project to build Lotus House – see the Facebook page/ buildingcommunitycambodia. A passion for a good story Ex Maleny resident, Doug Wakeling can certainly spin a few yarns and the sprightly 76 year old has lived a full and interesting life. This is a man who has a number of stories to tell and so at the age of 60 he decided to become an author and has now published three novels. The former nurseryman had never previously been a writer and says he “was never good at school and could hardly spell.” However, he could always tell a tall tale and had a passion for a good story. Inspired by personal events and a growing interest in his family, Doug immersed himself in finding out more about his great great grandfathers - one of whom was a convict and the other who he says, “should have been!” The initial catalyst for his investigation into his family history, which is the basis for his first two books, came from the suggestion of his mother who wanted Doug to know the truth about his family history. Before she died, she entrusted Doug with a drawer full of paperwork that became the start of Doug’s works of “faction” (based on fact but fictional accounts of their lives.) The penny really dropped for Doug in 2000, when he thought there was a good story in his family history that needed to be told. So he sought to weld a tale around the facts of his great great grandfather’s colourful life. Doug also credits the “mountain air” of Maleny which he believes contributed to the creative process.
By Sonia Clark
The first book – ‘Curse the Bells’ tells the story of John Joseph Layburn who was born in 1821. Doug has written a rollicking read that explores the various intrigues and adventures of the main character, a bigamist who had to leave England in a hurry, and his remarkable journey to Australia, which included being shipwrecked. The thought of publishing a book can be quite daunting and in Doug’s case a lot of research was involved. He spent a great deal of time at the local library in Maleny and is indebted to the patience and support of the Library staff throughout the process, as well as support from his wife Elizabeth. Doug says he committed a couple of hours a day to writing and “one thing just lead to another.” “Although it may take many years in the making to write a book – the challenge keeps you going and it is enormously satisfying to see your book in its entirety, published and on the shelves of book stores. Just persevere and do it!” Doug’s second book ‘The Reluctant Hero’ investigates further family stories including that of James Fines who instead of being a French Sea Captain was an Irish convict sent out to Australia in 1823 on the Medina. As well as James' story, Doug explores the military history of the Leyburn family, and those who fought in the Boer and two World Wars. Doug’s third book ‘Tracks in the Sand’ is a collection of short stories that continues to relate Doug’s passion for the history of his family. Doug’s books are available at the ‘Bookshop at Caloundra’ or online via eBooks.
Muso’s Club scores weekly Beerwah gig In great news for the Glasshouse Muso’s club - next year will kick off a regular weekly gig at the Beerwah Hotel (53 Beerwah Parade). The club organisers are thrilled to have a regular event back in the Glass House area. Starting on Tuesday, January 5 the club will have gigs on Tuesday evenings running from 7.00pm to 10.00pm. A weekly gig suits the format of the hotel and it will also advantage those ‘muso club’ regulars who like to have a good play. It also means acts can feature with longer timed spots. Hopefully support will be high to ensure it continues on a weekly basis. The club is keen to get feedback from the audience about what type of format would work best at the gigs, so drop them a line and let them know your thoughts. Features or showcases are an attraction as they give acts the opportunity to try and new repertoire or promote CDs, so please get in touch with the club if you would like to promote your CD, or feature your new act at one of the club nights. On that subject, there has been lots of interest from local poets, so if you are a talented bard, don’t hesitate to make contact. Also in the pipeline are plans to include more comedic elements to the gigs starting next year, so again if you have the talent - either emerging or developed - please get in touch. For more information see www.glasshousemusos.com.auor www. facebook.com/groups/musosclub/

Contributed by Glenys Hiley It’s been said before, and we have pleasure in saying it again, Maleny is a very generous community. Volunteers from the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary have been outside the IGA in Maleny selling tickets in a raffle twice a week over the past six weeks and have enjoyed the camaraderie and generosity of the locals and visitors to our lovely town. The raffle was a great success fundraising over $2,000.00 which will be used for equipment and other needs of the hospital. The beautifully dressed doll and hamper were won by Patricia Harper and Mr Cox. The main fundraiser for the Hospital Auxiliary is Fashion and Flowers held each May. Simply Stylish and Imelda’s Shoes provide the fashions and the Auxiliary presents an astoundingly scrumptious spread for morning tea. The next event will be May 5 next year. During 2015 over $20,000 has been spent on various items including a Versa Care Bed, Bariatric Wheel Chair, half share of an Arjo Lift Hoist and Delta Therapy Dogs. These purchases enhance the comfort and care of patients and help provide safer and easier working conditions for the staff. The Auxiliary has also received donations from private donors for specific projects at the hospital like the Memorial Walk, chairs for the garden and rose and camellia gardens.
Joan Whitehouse and Val Bridger drawing the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary 2015 raffle As part of the 100th year anniversary of World War 1, the Auxiliary applied for and received a grant of $59,000 from the Department of Veteran Affairs, under the Australian Federal Government Anzac Centenary Local Grants program. This, along with donations from local community groups, enabled us to build a peaceful, reflective area and monument to the men and women from Maleny and the surrounding area who fought overseas. All this activity and much catering by the ladies has resulted in a very busy and successful year for the Auxiliary. New members are always welcome. We meet every third Tuesday of the month at the Down Under Room at the Hospital. Just come along or phone our acting president Val Bridger on 5499 9798.

After a busy year, Morris House is now closed until Monday, January 11. We have assisted many clients during the year and the number of people needing help is increasing in our area. We sincerely thank those who have been a part of our Centre in 2015. Our volunteers, who have kept the centre open and provided help to those in need; the Anglican Food Bank – Ted and Eunice Prickett, Seventh Day Adventist Church member and Need a Feed - who all donated food and other essential items. Thanks also to members of the community who dropped off food but didn’t leave a name, Dave and Aiden Brown from Parkland Bakery who donated and delivered bread, Ross, our Tax Help volunteer who once again did a great job of assisting people with their tax returns, and Bernd Kalup from BDK Audio, who has kept our computers running efficiently throughout the year.
Without all of you, we wouldn’t be able to provide the services we do and our community and clients would be disadvantaged, so thank you to all who have helped. We hope you will continue to be part of our centre in 2016. We wish everyone a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year.

Menshed year in review
Contributed by Neil Glover The Glasshouse Country Menshed has been operating for six years, and this year, achieved an important milestone, with the construction of our own shed at 352 Peachester Road Beerwah. The new shed with floor space of 15 metres by 8.5 metres, is situated right next door to our good friends at Glasshouse Country Care. Coupled with a very satisfying increase in membership, our group has expanded activities to include small engine maintenance and repairs, leather work and specialty whip making, along with wood turning and carpentry. We have also built a wonderful, fully covered series of raised garden beds, from which members (and GHCC) have already benefitted, with the production of vegetables. Community projects in 2015 have included the construction of three commemorative park benches handcrafted from local bush timbers, for Australia Zoo. We also continue to be closely involved with the local Prostate Council Support group. Early next year, by taking advantage of the variety of skills and talent of our members, we will be conducting new courses in welding and art. An introduction to basic computer literacy is on our agenda and only awaits our imminent connection to the Internet. A dedicated area has been set aside, for those members who simply want to turn up and enjoy a relaxed uncompetitive environment. Games such as bocce, cards and chess will soon be available. We continue to encourage local men to drop in and checkout our new shed, have a cuppa and decide if they would like to be part of our friendly supportive group.
Lions cap off a successful year Contributed by Bob Banner The Beerwah Lions Club capped of a successful year with its Christmas Break Up held at Glenview Gardens. President Patricia was pleased to report that the last 12 months saw a more than satisfactory increase in the club’s membership, together with participation in several community events, including the Beerwah Street Party, and the Beerwah Charity Sports Day, an event which saw the local community give another substantial donation to the Queensland Cancer Council. Lions Lady Mary James organised a quiz for the night, which saw the Lions tested on their knowledge of Christmas. Mary followed this up with several club members given a set time to answer an impromptu question, namely is Santa Claus real, and why? Kim Sutcliffe won this contest with a brilliant impromptu two minute speech. The above photo shows Mary presenting Kim with her prize, which after the wrapping was removed, turned out to be a scratchy ticket. The Beerwah Lions take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped or donated to various fundraisers through the year, and to wish everyone a safe and merry Christmas and New Year.

Business Local News News
Public hot-spots now covered by CCTV The region became somewhat safer last week, with the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce launching 29 new CCTV cameras in the CBD’s of Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House. The Chamber was able to access $150,000 from the Federal Government’s Safer Streets program after an exhaustive application process. According to Chamber President Andrew Prescott, it was definitely a major undertaking. “But with the help of Douglas Grant from CCTV Specialists we were able to gain funding to set up what has been described as one of the most advanced systems of its kind in Australia. “It sets the benchmark for many other community communities looking to improve their safety with the help of intuitive CCTV systems,” he said. The funding was an election promise made by Mal Brough before the last Federal election. “I’m pleased to have played a part in getting this
project up and happening,” he said. “The CCTV cameras will cover ‘hot spot’ areas identified by local police to assist in crime prevention and prosecuting of offenders. “The Chamber and local businesses have worked hard to make this project a reality, and I congratulate them on their efforts.” The integrated technology and high definition cameras used in the system have been skilfully installed by local Adrian Korst from Beerwah Locksmiths. They are so innovative that representatives from Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, Gold Coast City Council and Cooroy Police station attended the launch to see for themselves the advantages that such a system could offer their communities. Each township has multiple cameras, covering a wide range of locations within each CBD area. Landsborough is already fully operational, with Beerwah almost complete and Glass House to be completed by the end of the year.

Road Safety
Despite the continued efforts of police in regard to enforcement and many other government agencies in raising awareness of the issues, there are still people dying on our roads. So far this year 229 people have died on Queensland roads, that is 229 people who will not be there to share Christmas with their families this year. The fatal five: speeding, drink/drug driving, seat belts, fatigue and distraction will be particularly targeted by police during the Christmas holiday period.
Lock it or Lose it
If you are planning on going away over the school holidays please make sure your house is secure. Offenders will often try a number of houses in an area in order to find the ‘softest’ target; don’t let that be your house. Secure windows and doors, and set lights on timers to mimic when lights would be on if you were home. Tell neighbours that you will be away and ask them to collect mail and put
bins out if necessary. When leaving your vehicle unattended in a public area, or even in your driveway, don’t leave valuables behind. If it is unavoidable then make sure they are well hidden and there is nothing to suggest that they might be there. If possible don’t leave bags and backpacks in view as offenders may break into the vehicle on the off chance that there are cameras, phones/tablets or wallets inside. If you see something suspicious let police know by contactingPolicelink on 131 444 or Policelink.qld.gov.au 24hrs a day. For urgent matters please call 000.

Christmas concert fun
Mooloolah State School recently enjoyed a well-attended Christmas concert; there was food, photos, a visit from Santa, laughs and the students performing with their classes in a Christmas song. The night ended with a spectacular fireworks display. It was a wonderful evening with a big thank you going out to Mooloolah Valley Lions Club for again helping us and cooking the barbecue. We had the P&C organising other food and selling
raffle tickets. The night was a huge success and enjoyed by all.
FunDAYRaiser to Buy a Bale Contributed by Sandra Conte The last day of each school term at Caboolture Montessori School is a FunDAYRaiser, where the children select a charity to which they can donate a gold coin and find other ways to support it.

This term was ‘Buy a Bale’, helping farmers requiring drought relief. Sitting on their bale of hay outside the school shed, community garden, orchard and sports fields, the children paused for thoughtful discussion around what it means to be a farmer when there is too little water. They decided it was also important to spare more than a thought for those farmers at this time of year because we sit around the Christmas dinner table with food they have provided. One of the points made was, wouldn’t it be great if families chose to buy a bale as a gift to their own animals and those farmers at the same time? The children raised $250.00 for the cause as well as buying a bale. Buy a Bale, the Australian signature drought relief program, can be found by visiting www.buyabale.com.au Children and Monte Kids Group Leader at Caboolture Montessori School discuss their Buy a Bale fundraiser day (Photo S. Re: Proposed Bruce HighwayCaloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway Project
The ‘Revised preferred planning layout July 2015' presented by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to the Sunshine Coast community shows lack of vision on many levels, poor understanding of the community’s concerns, and an attitude of going through the motions of community consultation when the community is in fact being presented with a fait accompli. The design produced by the tendering companies shows absence of innovation. This is likely a function of the narrow parameters set by the DTMR to create a smart solution. The funding for this project in excess of $1 billion is now committed as of this financial year. I would like to see this funding rolled over into the next financial year so that better solutions can be explored. One of the prime issues, concerns peak hour commuter vehicle travel which forms a bottle neck at the Bruce Highway for a couple of hours in the morning and couple of hours in the afternoon. The solution proposed is to bulldoze sections of the Beerwah forest near the Mooloolah Cemetery. This forest is one of the remaining remnant unlogged forests on the Sunshine Coast with a diverse eco system and 300 year old trees. This area should be protected for all of us and the animals of the forest at all costs. It is well documented in the USA that building more traffic lanes on freeways simply invites more vehicles onto roads and exacerbates the gridlock during the peak hour periods. More lanes does not equal better flowing traffic. A smarter solution is to use the funding to get commuters off the roads altogether and using trains, light rail and buses now. Our community is being offered a proposal which actively encourages increased use of cars and increased forest destruction. There is a certain irony that this coincides with the Paris Accord being signed off, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and minimise world temperature increases.
If this proposal makes you angry write to everyone you can think of to get it reviewed. Phone your local members; don’t accept poor decisions on our behalf. J Prestipino Glass House Mountains
What’s that shop opposite Aldi?
We have had so many curious visitors asking what we do and who we are! After 10 years of operation in the hinterland at Crohamhurst, the Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association (ASCTA) and their 10 staff have moved to a commercial shopfront opposite Aldi in Beerwah. As a Registered Training Organisation and a not-for-profit registered charity, ASCTA provides services to around 7,500 members throughout Australia. In the past six years, ASCTA has also trained over 24,000 swimming and water safety Teachers and swimming Coaches in 22 countries. ASCTA is not just about membership, but also saving lives through water safety and swimming education, providing professional development to teachers and coaches, dealing with infants to elite international swimmers, developing and marketing specialist resources to the industry, operating an industry insurance scheme, as well as acting as advocates on behalf of our members with government and the industry sector. Totally gutted
It is with much sadness and disappointment and a very heavy heart that I wish to say to the people of Glass House Mountains, it’s a warning to be super vigilant of your personal belongings and where you place them at the Railway Station. Recently I made a very costly mistake of leaving my purse down on a seat, to top up our go cards and was looking out for my son, as he was exchanging our money for change for our cards. I turned around and my purse was gone. It was a huge shock and I am extremely upset by such a low act.
You Said It Inside my purse was a fair amount of money, which I am not worried about, what has really been most distressing has been the theft of my son’s special needs party tickets for Christmas, which was held at South Bank. It was my son’s first attendance at such a party which we believe was something very special indeed and all the children were to receive gifts and have a fabulous time. Also I had very special photos of my two sons as babies, and one of my father and myself, which is 52 years old and cannot be replaced, as my father has been gone for nine years now. I just would like to say how could you do such a low act especially at Christmas, have you any heart? It’s not going to be a very merry Christmas for us. But we did learn a very important lesson, don’t walk away from your gear, and most importantly don’t carry cash, and make sure your hand bag is secured. Giulia Collishaw Glass House Mountains Letters continued in classified section page 37.
Editor’s Note
We received this postcard message in the letterbox at GC&M office recently – which definitely brought us all some Joy.

Tis the Season Here it is again! Tis a wonderful time of year that’s for sure, but for some it can be the start of New Year debt you don’t need. Here are our top two tips to save this Christmas 1. Think about your gift purchases. Do you really need to spend lots of money to make people happy? We don’t think so. Sometimes giving of yourself can be the best gift of all. For your loved ones all they want is to spend quality time with you so instead of budgeting money for their present, budget your time to spend with them. A little thoughtful gift and you doing more with them is the perfect present. 2. Try not to max out the credit card. You don’t want to start the New Year playing catch up and the people you are spending money on would not want that for you either. Thank you to all our members for your continued support throughout the year. If you are not a member … why not? No time like now to join your local member-owned credit union. Come and find out what you have been missing.
Merry Christmas from all of us at Maleny Credit Union. We look forward to serving you in 2016.

Environment Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Season’s Greetings and other stuff with Sue Tanner Last Tuesday all the MCSR guides gathered for lunch at the Cairncross café (where else) for a de-brief and a gossip but most importantly to say goodbye and thankyou to our co-ordinator, Bob Taylor. Bob has done this often frustrating job for 10 years and we will miss him. Good job Boss! We wish you the best with your health battles. We promise to behave for Robyn Downey the new co-ordinator. Also last week the volunteers got together for their thankyou/ Christmas party at the Cairncross café (where else). This occasion was also tinged with sadness as it was the last time, given the plans for redevelopment, that Sarah and her staff will cater for us, as they have for many previous Christmas parties. It was a good night and the food was, of course, delicious! In the Education Centre you can now see a display of snakes thanks to Dr Scott Burnett of USC and some other reptiles and amphibians from the Queensland Museum. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Assoc. sponsor these displays every year over the Christmas school holidays. The snakes are always popular and there are some specimens of snakes we have in the reserve. It is cooler in the rainforest and a lovely time of year for a walk as most of the birds are back and calling, there are a number of pademelon joeys showing themselves and the red black bean flowers are carpeting the track. Although volunteers are bracing themselves for the busy school holiday period, it is wonderful to see so many parents bringing children to experience the rainforest. The Friends wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and all you wish for yourselves for 2016. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Pets &
Animals Glasshouse Early Education Centre visit animal refuge By Sonia Clark
On Friday, December 11, eight children from Glasshouse Early Education Centre visited the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge to donate a large plastic container filled with goods for the refuge shelter. The idea was instigated by Centre supervisor, Ange Hardey who has recently returned from maternity leave. Ange was keen for the children to have firsthand experience in the value of donating to a great cause. “It is so important for us to have these community connections, and to positively educate our children about sharing and help others less fortunate,” she said. The collection for the shelter started in November and has been whole heartedly embraced by the families at the Centre. It also provided the children with an important affirmative lesson in donating, the joy of helping others, and responsible pet ownership. The families were very generous and the collection container was overflowing with pet food, pet toys and blankets. The children got to walk around the refuge during their visit and learn more about the re-homing process from the shelter volunteers. They also got to witness a pet adoption in process which was very exciting. The kids had a wonderful time and given the success of the donation project, Ange and the team are now planning to arrange a collection every quarter - which anyone in the community can donate to. Supervisor Ange, is excited to be returning to the Centre, after nine months on maternity leave. She takes over from Sam Lane who has recently moved interstate with her family. Ange has returned eager and revitalised, and is looking forward to implementing lots of great ideas. One of her goals is to have a second centre on the site open sometime in 2016. Demand at the centre has been increasing and the plans to expand the capacity of the centre will ensure that more local families can access the service. Library News
Noticeboard
by Caroline and staff at Maleny Library What’s happening at Maleny Library? Maleny Library Book reviews Cokcraco: A novel in ten cockroaches This is an amusing novel by Sunshine Coast author and academic, Paul Williams. The protagonist is Timothy Turner, an Australian academic who takes up a teaching post in South Africa. There he is confronted with the mysterious departure of the staff member he has replaced, a bunch of demanding students and the political machinations of life on campus. A sharp, clever and hilarious send-up of academia and the politics of South Africa today. Four meditations on Happiness by Michael Hampe: This book is a chatty but academic work which is half story and half essay on finding happiness in today's society. It is a thought provoking read mentioning our fear of death and our desires.
The Children's Book by A S Byatt: This is a novel about several families living in country UK in the nineteenth century and written in that historical style. It has many layers and provides some interesting insights into unconventional lives in that era. Due to its leaden progress, deep layers and my time-poor and over stimulated lifestyle, I couldn't go the distance with this book. But if you enjoy this type of meaty read and have the time, give it a go. Did you know? You can bring in your library card and try out an iPad, Galaxy tablet or e-Reader for a few hours or borrow eBooks and eAudio books for the car. You can also download magazines, music and films to keep. For more details please visit www.libraries. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, call 5475 8989 or ask one of our friendly library staff.

Over the Christmas holidays there is nothing better than heading out to meet up with family and friends for a relaxing lunch. And even though our holidays haven’t actually started, I thought I would give it a go (in the name of work). Brownie and I escaped the office for a few hours the other day for a leisurely lunch on the back deck of the Landsborough Hotel. It is definitely a relaxing spot to watch the world go by, and they have a great well-priced lunch time menu for the grown-ups as well as a comprehensive one for the kids. We ordered a chicken burger and a beef nachos, and wow – what big meals. And the chicken burger was ‘real chicken’ not a processed pattie and the same with the nachos, it was served very generously with a beautiful avocado and lashings of sour cream. So if you are holidaying at home, keep in mind that the Landsborough Hotel will be serving lunch everyday from 12.00noon until 2.30pm!

Christmas messages from Glasshouse Mike Turner Beerwah State High School Chaplain We all have different views on Christmas, but at its heart is the story of Jesus Christ who came to the world as a baby. The bible talks about Jesus being the son of God and how he saved all humankind from our sins – selfishness that separates us from an amazing, massive, loving God. Life is so precious. You are so valuable. Don’t let this Christmas be just another Christmas. God is right there, all you need to do is pray. Have a great Christmas!
Rev Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church In the midst of the Christmas busyness, our prayer is that you will never lose sight that God gave us the greatest gift of all. More than 2,000 years ago in the backblocks of the world, God became a man and lived among us experiencing all we do so that He is better able to understand us and so that we might understand God as well. This Christmas take some time to remember Jesus - God’s most amazing gift to mankind. Fr Craig Moody, Parish Priest Glasshouse Country Anglican Church (NOTE: the spelling of Christmass is intentional to draw attention to the meaning of Christmass) In Australia we face the challenge of being a Church in the Southern hemisphere. As Northern Churches slip into the deep midwinter through advent and Christmass, the message of Christ the light dawning in the darkness provides a powerful image, pointing forward naturally to Easter, to spring. But here in the hot and humid south, where we are blessed with summer warmth and light, we celebrate Christmass in God’s love, with hope for the future, regardless of the weather. For all our friend’s in Glasshouse Country I pray that you will have a holy, happy and safe Australian Christmas!
Father Kevin Smith Catholic Church The news is becoming more and more a source of fear, desperation and heart ache. The darkness associated with the taking of life, family break down and conflict between people is all most overpowering. Yet in the midst of it all, we celebrate news of great joy, which is sent to all of humanity. God is indeed with us and among us. May this news be a source of blessing and peace to us all. Dr Percy Harrold Landsborough Community Seventh-day Adventist Church ‘It doesn’t take much’ was the title of the address my nurse- educator daughter Cheryl gave at her College of Nursing Graduation last week. Yes there are important observations to be recorded, but what the receiver of care remembers are the little things. Betty Larwood died not long ago. A mother, a missionary nurse to the Solomon Islands, she was loved by her family and community. Cheryl spoke of Betty’s enthusiasm and generous gifts of care as a model to emulate. Reminds me of the love and generosity shown by God in giving his only Son to provide salvation for us all. Something to think about all year round. May you have a blessed Christmas.
The gift of giving
Contributed by Pam Innes Each year Glasshouse Country Anglican congregation place gifts under an empty Christmas tree. It is organised by Mothers' Union members and the gifts are to be given to women and children who will spend Christmas in the Women's Shelter. We are now in our second week of donations, as one delivery has already been made.
Jay and Sandi Hobbs Suncoast Church Beerwah Well it's that time of year again where we have decked our halls with boughs of holly and Christmas lights - that is, if you could untangle yours! Mine always seem to come out of the box in a tangled knotted mess even if I neatly folded them before I packed them away. Every time I turn on my tree lights though, their twinkling beauty reminds me of something else. On the first Christmas morning, the lights that shone weren't hung on a plastic green tree. Rather, the sky was awake with cascading beams of brilliance from a host of angels announcing something extraordinary! The real Light of Christmas. ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.’ James 1:17. I'm feeling better about untangling next year’s Christmas lights already!
Pastor Aaron Jackson Church on the Rise Beerwah ‘And this is the sign from the LORD to prove that He will do as he promised…’ Is 38:7 When you accept Christ and personally receive him as your saviour you will see that God has provided you with the perfect answer for every challenge. With faith in God’s plan through Christ, we can approach every obstacle and victory with grace, wisdom, love and forgiveness. Christ is the sign that we need, to know God loves us. Give your heart fully to Him. Have a Merry Christmas, and may 2016 be your best yet. Amen Fr Harry Reuss - Parish Priest Maleny Anglican Parish

Reverend Scott Kroege Maleny Presbyterian Church As Christmas rolls around each year, we often see pictures or nativity scenes featuring a newborn baby wrapped in cloth resting in a manger. New born babies are cute and cuddly and most always a joy to anyone. Everybody loves the baby Jesus. The problem is that most people never really deal with the baby who grew up. Jesus did not stay a baby, but became the Saviour of the world as was promised in Scripture. Christmas is about a manger that soon became empty. Christmas is the celebration of the coming of the promised Christ.

Christmas is the miracle of God’s love made flesh among us. In all our unworthiness God chose this incredible way of showing us how much He loves each person. With wonder, awe, thanksgiving and humility we await the coming love among us, holding all things together. The spirit of Christmas is partially the giving and receiving of presents, the festivities and decorations, sending and getting greeting cards, going home again and renewing family ties and preparing and enjoying festive meals, but the Christmas spirit is primarily an awareness and response to the great miracle of God coming into the world uniquely in Jesus Christ. It is a sense of wonder at the greatness of God’s love and salvation, it is a feeling of acceptance and belonging to the creator of life; it is an awareness of our deep need of the message of the angels of joy, peace and being made one with God and with others. I take this opportunity to wish you and your families a Happy and Holy Christmas.

Country & Maleny Ministers Random acts of kindness
By Sonia Clark This Christmas season, Church on the Rise at Beerwah is spreading the love by encouraging their 200 strong congregations to practice ‘Random Acts of Christmas Kindness’ (RACK’ed). The initiative is being led by Pastor Aaron Jackson and the campaign is a way for the church to provide blessings for the community. In previous years, the church has supported various ventures during the Christmas period, such as Christmas hampers to a small number of needy families. However this year, the hope is to positively impact on the greater community. Building on the motto of ‘loving god, loving people and loving life’, the idea behind the campaign involves congregation members randomly making a difference to someone else in the community. This can involve ‘paying it forward’ and purchasing a coffee/sandwich for the next person, mowing a neighbour’s lawn or just helping someone with their groceries. Along with these kind gestures, congregation members are leaving an eye catching business card with the wording ‘you’ve been RACKed’ to highlight the meaning behind the generosity. “People rule themselves out thinking that they can’t make a difference unless they make a substantial contribution,” said Ps Aaron. “I always quote the famous line - nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.” Encouraging people to think of others is one of the key messages behind the campaign, along with the realisation that even small acts, can make a huge difference to someone’s life. So why not embrace the goodwill behind this lovely message and consider also making your own act of random kindness?
Pastor Aaron showing just how easy it is to perform a random act of kindness
Pastor Margaret Niethe Glasshouse Country Uniting Church How are you celebrating this Christmas? Do you ask; Why Christmas? Do you really want to understand? I read a T-shirt recently that said without Christ there would be no Christmas. That is how I feel.We celebrate because Christ was born so we might live, so that I may live. I want to know how passionately, how intensely he feels about me. Did Jesus desire to be born? Or was his being born part of the divine plan. I believe this question is answered in blood, the blood Jesus shed on the cross. There is a word that marks this love of Christ ‘excessive’. His love for you overflows all reason, expectations, hopes and dreams. For Christ to lay down his life for us says that this covenant is no schoolboy pledge, head-of-state agreement or legal contract. Christ’s love emanates a powerful emotion. For him to die for you is for him to be delighted in you. This is the reason to celebrate his birth; this is Christmas.
The Baptist Church Choir has been kept busy performing at community events over the past weeks in Beerwah – thanks for sharing the joy Reverend Catherine Solomon Uniting Church in Australia – Blackall Range While many people celebrate Christmas by decorating homes and streets, singing community carols, gathering with family and friends and sharing gifts, others struggle to share in this joy. Some will have loved ones missing around the Christmas table and some will have no table to share. The Christmas story is when Jesus entered a lost, confused and dark world, and as a humble and peaceful baby, offered all humanity gifts of hope, peace, joy and love. These gifts are still offered in 2015 to transform individuals and communities. You are invited to a church this Christmas to explore these gifts for yourself. May peace be with you this Christmas Season.
Pastor Kathy Eddie Glasshouse Community Church One of the dangers of internet relationships is that it is very easy to hide who you really are. To really get to know someone you need to spend time with them personally. God knows the importance of proximity in relationships. This was one of the benefits of Jesus coming to earth. John 1:14 says ‘The Word (Jesus) became flesh and made his dwelling among us.’ Because Christ came to earth to live amongst people, those around him got to see him and know what he is truly like. Rather than hearing about this God from remote sources, they could observe and interact with God, as the person of Jesus. God wanted them to get to know the real Him. And He wants the same for us today.
Pastor Barry Leask Church on the Rise Maleny Christmas has different meanings to different people. To some it may bring back memories of lack, or dysfunction, to others, sheer excitement of food and gifts. What makes Christmas special to the believer, is it’s a great time to remember the love of God in sending Jesus to humanity. We can celebrate that great truth in any location with lots or little. Even if there’s been bad experiences around Christmas in Christ we look forward and believe the old has gone and the new has come. 2Co 5:17.We pray you have an awesome Christmas and a special 2016.

Things To Do Maleny Film Society set to start new year in style
Unite, Inspire, Paint
The first film screening from the Maleny Film Society for 2016 will be ‘Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem’ on Saturday, January 9 at 7.15pm, with dinner at 6.00pm catered by Wild Rocket @ Misty’s. Gett is the Hebrew word for divorce, highlighting an archaic religious-legal system where mutual consent is the only ground for dissolution of a marriage, allowed by a panel of rabbis. When husband Shimon Amsalem (played by Sasson Gabai) decides his wife Viviane Amsalem (Ronit Elkabetz) is his ‘fate’, and refuses to release her from their marriage, her ‘trial’ drags on over several years of brilliant court room wrangling presented by a fascinating array of actors. Actress-directorwriter Elkabetz is renowned for taking on topics where people are battling for basic rights – and this production promises to be engrossing (and perhaps infuriating) as Viviane struggles with quiet steadfastness for her basic independence. English subtitles cover a language mix of French, Arabic and Hebrew. Members of MFS may pre-book on-line or via the Maleny information Centre.
Caloundra Arts Centre Association’s Friday Art Group is pleased to present their second ‘Unite, Inspire, Paint’ art exhibition from January 9 to 13, open 10.00am to 4.00pm daily at 5 North Street, Caloundra. A spokesperson for the group said: "Our last exhibition displayed 188 paintings from 43 local artists, across various mediums, and ranged in price from $80.00 to $900.00. "There are four separate prizes (to a value of $60.00 per artist), which are allocated to four different categories of ‘People's Choice Awards’, and based on different values per painting. "This exhibition is all about focusing on our artists, who delight with their individual skills. All this art is available for purchase and is excellent value for original artwork to proudly hang in your home or to give as a gift. Don’t miss this amazing art exhibition." The entry to the exhibition is free.
Art exhibition kicks off Boxing Day Four groups of different artists from the Blackall Range Visual Artists will be hosting an exhibition of their work at the St Mary’s Hall on the Green at Montville from Saturday, December 26 through until Monday, January 18. The exhibition will be open daily, from 10.00am to 4.00pm with big and little paintings in acrylic, oils, watercolour and pastels on show, together with a wide range of greeting cards and prints featuring the artists’ works. Entry is free and all commissions and donations will go towards maintaining the historic hall. To find out more about the group go to www. blackallrangevisualartists.com

In the Garden Get Up & Grow with Jade King
Companions and enemies!
There are a number of reasons why people choose to practice companion planting, such as for pest repelling, soil amelioration, increased flavour and beneficial insect attractants. The range of possibilities and their benefits are extensive and as yet, not always fully understood. Along with companions, there are also those plants that appear to be enemies, detrimentally affecting each other. Here are just a few common companion and enemy plants to get started. Onions and carrots A common pest of carrots is the carrot fly, which is attracted by smell to the carrot, and it is often mentioned not to leave the tops of the carrots laying around after harvesting them from the patch, as this can in itself attract the carrot fly. Planting onions amongst the carrots are said to repel carrot fly due to its strong and distinctly different odour. In addition, onions planted with carrots can reduce onion maggot spreading through all onions, as the onions are not planted closely where the maggots travel from one to the next. On the other hand, onions and peas don’t mix, and both do poorly when grown together. Corn, beans and cucurbits Corn is a very nitrogen hungry plant and can benefit from being planted with beans that fix nitrogen from the air and restore it to the soil. The corn can also act as a great trellis for climbing beans. Cucurbits such as melons, pumpkins and cucumber all benefit from the shade when planted around corn, whilst the corn benefits from increased soil and weed protection around the stalk. Basil and tomato Basil is said to repel insect pests from tomatoes and reduce the potential for disease setting in. It is also said to improve the flavour and growth of the tomatoes. A particular benefit of this partnership is that the two also go very well together in recipes. On the down side, tomato and corn need to be separated as they share the same detrimental pest, corn earworm and tomato fruit worm. Furthermore, tomatoes and brassicas repel each other. Garlic and fruit trees Garlic grown in a circle around the base of fruit trees is said to act as a barrier to borers due to its potency and when made into a garlic spray, can destroy certain diseases that damage stone fruits. Conversely, as with onions which are of the same family, garlic inhibits the growth of peas and beans. Coriander Coriander is said to be impervious to aphids and repels them from plants it is grown around. It is also a great attractant to bees and other beneficial insects when in flower, and as such, a great addition to any garden. I hope that sheds some light on just a few of the many benefits of companion planting. From our garden to yours, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a bountiful new year!
Jade likes her family to be able to live as self sufficiently as possible from her garden and she loves to share her knowledge with others.

Brownie’s Christmas Jokes
inworan Bh tiw The Sunday School teacher told her studentseabout angel appearing to Joseph in a dream, warning him about danger to the baby Jesus and telling him how to escape from it. After the story time, the students were given an opportunity to draw a picture about the story. Most of the pictures were predictable, but Larry's had an odd element in it. "Larry, I see Joseph and Mary with the baby Jesus on a donkey, but what is that following the donkey?” "It's the flea." "A flea?” asked the teacher. To which the boy faithfully repeated the Bible verse, "Take Mary and Jesus and flee to Egypt." he said. “There's Mary, there's Jesus, and there's the flea." A minister is visiting his children to celebrate Christmas. When he walks into the house, he sees a beautiful nativity set. His granddaughter walks up to him, and he asks her if she knows what it is. She replies, "Yes... it's breakable." Christmas Tip – from the Boys (and Girls) in Blue … If you're singing Christmas songs on your neighbour's lawn at night with your church group, it's called "carolling." But if you're doing it alone with no pants on, it's called "drunk and disorderly”.
Merry Christmas to you all, and hope you get some great gardening presents for Christmas.

Luring lizards
Unlike other continents, Australia has few large mammalian predators, making this country ideal for the development of reptiles. There are more than 830 species of reptile spread across all parts of Australia, and about 89% of these are not found anywhere else in the world. Lizards are the most common of our reptiles, possibly because they are the best at surviving in hot, dry environments. There are five distinct families of lizard in Australia: geckos, dragons, skinks, legless lizards and goannas. The sad news is that one in four of our lizard species is in serious strife. Lizards are vital components of healthy bush (and backyard) biodiversity. There are a number of ways you can encourage lizards to your backyard and ensure their health and survival. Include tussock grasses, groundcovers, rocks and logs to provide hiding spots. Ensure there are protected sunny spots with rocks, bricks or logs so they can warm up each morning in safety. Most lizards feast on insects which thrive in deep leaf litter, rotting logs, branches, and thick groundcovers. Avoid raking or disturbing mulch, and keep pets away. Plant berry or nectar producing local natives to attract insects. Vines and creepers growing up fences provide excellent protection for climbing lizards. Most importantly, stop spraying insecticides. They can be deadly to reptiles, and kill their food source, insects. Lizards are effective insect controllers – blue tongues and shinglebacks eat slugs and snails, while skinks and geckos catch crawling and flying insects and their larvae. Sport Maleny’s junior cricketers represent Sunshine Coast
Glasshouse Primary wins challenge
Junior cricket moved into its representative season last week with five of the Maleny Redbacks junior cricket players representing the Sunshine Coast at the Queensland Junior Cricket carnivals. Under 12 player, Cameron Kronk sweated it out in the heat and humidity of Cairns, competing against the other regions of Queensland. Under 14 player, Jonty Corkin had five days of cricket down at the Gold Coast at the Under 13s carnival, while three members of the Maleny Stanley Rivers Under 16 team, Mitchell English, Matthew Martin and Kaleb Weil, had the unenviable task of surviving a week of cricket in Charters Towers. After Christmas, Tallis Corkin and Rex Tooley will be competing for the Sunshine Coast at the Ian Healy Cup in Albany Creek and Kyle Jackson will be travelling to Ipswich to play in the Les Kinnane Shield. The Maleny Redbacks wish all the players the best of luck at their respective carnivals.
Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range President Peter Jensen presenting the trophy to Ms Somers, accompanied by Lion Valerie Jenkins who had visited the school before the running event to encourage participation
(back row) Kyle Jackson, Jonty Corkin, Mitchell English, Kaleb Weil and Matthew Martin (front row) Tallis Corkin, Cameron Kronk and Rex Tooley www.gcnews.com.au
At the recent Mountain View Challenge conducted annually by the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range, Glasshouse Primary took out the 3km Maleny Realty Participation Trophy against a dozen other schools in the area. The trophy is awarded annually to the school bringing the largest number of runners, in proportion to the number of children, enrolled at the school. You Said It Re: The Australian Bushman (GC&M News December 16)
I would like to commend Jamie Hazleden on the success of his local business and his TV show on Off Road Touring. While Jamie may have a love of the outdoors and camping, and a desire to share the ‘spectacular beauty’ of our country with others, perhaps he could consider doing this in other ways than taking 4WD vehicles into National Parks! National Parks are for conservation and should be quiet and peaceful places for appreciation of natural beauty, flora and fauna. I fail to see how motorised vehicles of any kind could be respectful of the natural environment in National Parks. As a member of a regular bush walking group in both the Glasshouse Mountains National Parks and the state forests adjoining them, I am appalled at the ever increasing damage caused by 4WD vehicles and trail bikes. Locked gates are no barrier and no longer exist anywhere. Fire trails are in many cases untrafficable. The mountain views of this area are without comparisonacross this country. Together with the unique flora and fauna, the Glass House Mountains are important to the Eco Tourism industry of the Sunshine Coast. Sadly vehicular damage is ablight on our beautiful landscape and extremely damaging to our rare and endemic plant species. We need to ‘lock the gates’ again and hope regeneration may occur in perhaps 50 years! Take your tour group for a walk Jamie and you may find you enjoy that more! Gwen Malcolm Glass House Mountains

Really annoyed
While I understand that the owners of the Beerwah Marketplace are desperate to get tenants into their shops, I am not happy at all that Banjos, a large bakery café, will be going in outside Woolworths. This approach seems very unfair to the existing tenants.Clearly they are not concerned about protecting their interests and also that of the Beerwah township. I believe local residents should unite in our support of the many great small local businesses to help ensure their survival. Janine Rea Beerburrum DECEMBER 22 2015 |

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
A cautionary Christmas tale With Christmas close upon us, I would like to share a personal experience with my family and friends about drinking and driving. As you know, some people have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time, often on the way home after a ‘social session’ with family or friends. Well, two days ago, this happened to me. I was out for an evening with work friends and had more than several beers followed by a couple of bottles of rather nice red wine and a few vodka shots. Although relaxed, I still had the common sense to know I was well over the limit. That's when I did something I've never done before
- I took a taxi home. Sure enough on the way there was a police roadside check, but since it was a taxi they just waved it past and I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real surprise to me, because I had never driven a taxi before. I don't know where I got it, and now that it's in my driveway I don't know what to do with it. So, anyway, if you want to borrow it give me a call. Merry Christmas and be safe out there… Hugh Jones, Beerwah *Please note: GC&MNews does not encourage dring driving or vehicle theft

Week beginning 22/12/2015 SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 The planet Venus is going to connect with your ruler Jupiter bringing joy, rewards and celebrations. This is a time that may see some really friendly and useful contacts. The key, however, is to keep expectations within reasonable limits. Some travel details are complicated now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The full Moon is in the opposite sign of Cancer which brings an emotional trigger to you alongside a disruptive event at home. However, there is some good news which will save the day. Your friends' actions around you are still offering a lot of support and caring in between struggles. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 There is a tendency first to worry about things, and perhaps make mountains out of molehills under the Full Moon in Cancer, which reflects upon your work and health over the next few weeks. Just attend to these concerns as they come up. Don’t let aggravations upset you. PISCES February 20 - March 20 This week everyone in the family has something to say! There are happy feelings from some, who are now having good holidays, while a couple of sour notes come from others who are under difficulties. It might be hard to say goodbye after being together after the holiday period.
ARIES March 21 - April 20 Be flexible about your plans because they can change over the Christmas period. Allow extra time for travel but in general the Full Moon at Christmas time, in the sign of Cancer, can bring to its sensitive, nostalgic energy to bear on family involvements. See the best in everyone! TAURUS April 21 - May 21 This weekend over Christmas there is the gift of love, money, devotion, and commitment that makes you realise how very rich you are and how much you have! There is a decision to be made on travel and the news comes to you bringing a positive outcome. Avoid weekend grumpiness. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 Seasonal activities dominate all through Christmas and, especially at the Full Moon weekend, everything is personally rewarding. You have a very good plan for pursuing multiple interests and overcoming any snags that may develop. In the weeks ahead relationships are favoured. CANCER June 22 - July 22 If you are looking for answers within, then you will have to spend time alone, which will be your favourite pastime under the Cancer Full Moon over Christmas. The Moon in your sign makes Christmas Day a happy emotional day, perhaps with a tear about parting from old friends.
LEO July 23 - August 22 It would be wise not to take others for granted over the Christmas weekend. Please show your appreciation for those who decorated your home, or for the entertaining social activities of which you have been a part. You may find that there are some nice hours spent alone. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 The weekend is one of your best celebratory days as all your feelings are filled with abundant joy and love. Some hours around the Full Moon set off a different set of circumstances, but all that is with much hope and good cheer. Lost luggage may cause you some delays now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 This week the outlook is considerably brighter and there is the acquisition of some converted item! Your thoughts are turning to contact people living away from you and catching up with as many people as you can around the Full Moon at Christmas. Don’t try doing too much. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 If you have a partner there are some financial affairs coming in from your joint resource that look very good. Enjoy the good fortune and resources of all kinds that are flowing abundantly your way now! The Full Moon on Friday brings emotional communication from unexpected places.
