T

his week’s edition is packed full of big issues – with community consultation underway regarding level crossings in Glass House and Landsborough, there is plenty of concern by locals about how this may play out. The greatest fear being that the potential negative outcomes of removing the Beerwah level crossing a number of years ago could once again negatively impact the area. Combining this with the announcement that there are a group of people who would like to establish a four day international TT Motorbike Race that will be based in Maleny has seen plenty of emotional responses and it definitely does look like the battle lines will be drawn. And with the longest ever Election Campaign almost coming to an end – there is another round of questions for the candidates and with only one more edition after this before the big day – if you have something to say on the election, make sure you get your letters in by Friday, June 24 at 12.00noon. Celebration of Books, Maleny showcases Women of Books Maleny's Celebration of Books, held from July 1 - 3, will celebrate the important role women play in Australian literature. There will be events and activities for all ages and tastes. The festival will display books, talk about books and writing and for the first time showcase a unique multi-media artwork created by local artist Corrie Wright (pictured). Corrie has gathered a sequence of stories from women about the special books in their lives to create visual footage for projection onto trees. A prefestival showing on Tesch Park trees will take place on Monday, June 27 from 6.00pm. The main showing on Friday, July 1 will illuminate Maple Street trees beside the ‘Peace of Green Gallery’ from 5.30pm. In another first, Sydney-based social commentator, author and television personality, Jane Caro will take centre stage at the Sunday morning session on July 3.

The session, ‘Women Talking Writing’, will be facilitated by award winning Australian author Krissy Kneen, alongside one of Australia's premier novelists, Susan Johnson, and Indigenous author Ellen van Neerven. The most awarded book of the year 'The Natural Way of Things' by Charlotte Wood combines controversy and outstanding writing and will ensure a lively discussion led by academic Dr Clare ArcherLean and organisational psychologist Sue Collaro. A display of rare first edition books by leading Australian female authors can be seen in the Maleny Library from June 20 to July 8. At the display's opening on Monday, June 27, three local women will read short passages from works by Miles Franklin, Judith Wright and Kath Walker (Oodgeroo Noonuccal). Stunning illustrations from children's books by three locals, Judy Paulson, Heather and Diane SomersCook will be on display in the Maleny Library. Other events include a workshop on narrative writing for children and a bumper book sale. We had several quotes for the work, however as soon as we spoke with Kev and (he even sketched his ideas at our very first meeting), we knew who we wanted working on the project. With this being our first venture into renovation, we found his many years of experience very insightful, including choosing colour schemes, design and different storage ideas. Last week Sunshine Coast Council handed down a $717 million council budget and before we talk about how council plan to spend it, let’s cut to the bottom line. What is it going to mean for your household budget? General rates for the majority of ratepayers will increase by $28.00 to $1138.00 per annum and the cost of collection of a 240 litre wheelie bin will increase by $4.60 to $276.00 per annum. Council advises that this combined increase of 2.2% is in line with the Local Government Association of Queensland’s Council Cost Index. Council will increase the Environment Levy by $10.00 taking it to $70.00, the Transport Levy by $7.00 to $27.00 and the Heritage Levy by $3.00 to $8.00 per annum, a combined annual increase of $20.00. These levy increases are happening for the first time in eight years, so the combined increase is less than $1.00 a week. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the early bird and pensioner discounts had been maintained. “Council is investing $100 million to maintain, renew and replace roads, pathways and stormwater assets,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Our libraries, galleries and community facilities will receive $33 million, and another $46 million will go towards economic initiatives including major events, our airport and holiday parks. “$63 million has been allocated to maintaining, renewing and replacing Sunshine Coast’s many parks, gardens and sporting facilities.

By Lea Parkes

“Our environment, including our beaches, foreshores and bushland conservation programs will receive $28 million and another $7 million will be allocated to community events and grants giving a helping hand to clubs and associations who contribute to our lifestyle and help others,” he said. Mayor Jamieson said the council’s 2016/17 budget included a $253 million capital works program and was an investment in the future of our communities thanks to a number of gamechanger projects. “This financial year council is investing $53 million in the new Maroochydore City Centre Australia’s only greenfield CBD within an existing urban area,” Mayor Jamieson said. Sunshine Coast Council is Australia’s first local government to build a solar farm to offset its entire electricity consumption and will invest $31 million in the game-changer project during 2016/17. Mayor Jamieson said the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm, due for completion in 2017, would provide $22 million in savings (after costs), over a 30year period. The Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project will receive a $25 million investment to start design and planning works for the new runway. “Our capital works program also includes $6 million for community and sporting facilities; $13 million for parks and gardens; $59 million for transport and stormwater projects; $13 million on waste management infrastructure; $6 million on the Sunshine Coast Airport and holiday parks.

What’s in the budget for our local area? “Our Sunshine Coast environment will receive a $9.3 million investment through the Environment Levy alone, a primary funding source which allows council to deliver on its long-term strategic approach to environmental management,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Funding will allow for land acquisition, partnerships and grants such as the very successful Land for Wildlife Program, environmental operational management and flying fox roost management and education, coastal dunal rehabilitation and river restoration activities. “Preserving our heritage is equally important and council will be able to establish an accumulative Heritage Futures Fund which will enable a long term savings plan to fund those bigger projects in this region. The Transport Levy will fund service improvements, bus stop upgrades to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, improve hinterland services and undertake research, planning and investigations analysis. The levy will also contribute to the Transport Futures Fund for projects such as Sunshine Coast Light Rail. “The garden waste bin charge remains the same at $60.00 per annum and residents can continue to dispose of their unwanted mattress and nondegassed fridge for free.” The tourism and major events levy has risen by 10% and will affect 10% of ratepayers. Finance Portfolio Councillor Tim Dwyer said the council had handed down a responsible budget which held down costs and produced a very strong balance sheet with good cash flow.

International racing plan for Maleny A proposal to stage a four day motorbike racing event – the Sunshine Coast International TT – on the streets through Maleny and Peachester has caused divisions with the local community … conflicts which will most likely ferment for many months to come. Based on an Isle-of-Man style time trial event, Inside Line Events International are planning one of the largest motorcycling events in Australia, the likes of which has never been held in this country before, claiming to bring $8.5 million to Maleny. The company has recently made advances to the Sunshine Coast Council with their preliminary plans, and presented their ideas to locals at two community meetings held last Wednesday at Maleny High School, attracting around 100 people to the morning meeting and about 150 to the evening sitting. Both sessions had a mixture of people who were for the idea, people who were against the idea and just as many who needed to know more to make up their minds. Company representative David Rollins presented some details, financial figures and logistical plans which they had collated, hoping to have the event signed, sealed, delivered and racing for December 17 next year. Although described as “early days” in the process, the proposal sees a 47 kilometre track created utilising existing roads. Starting on Bunya Street opposite Maleny High School, the bikes race at speeds of over 200 kilometres per hour along the circuit formed by Bunya Street, left into Tallowwood Street, right into Centenary Drive, left into Maleny-Stanley River Road, onto Booroobin Road, left into

Kilcoy-Beerwah Road, left onto Bald Knob Road, left onto Landsborough-Maleny Road, left onto Mountain View Road, right onto McCarthys Road, then left onto Bunya Street and back to the start opposite the High School. All roads will be closed between 8.00am and 4.00pm during the racing, meaning those living along the route and those in the roads adjoining the route, will be cut off for those four days. As outlined by Mr Rollins, the event: • has four classes each with 20 professional-only riders competing • is time trial based, meaning that riders are not racing against each other, rather against the clock • will be have six spectator zones spread along the circuit – each described by Mr Rollins as a 'party central' • will have a capped spectator volume of 23,000 • is estimated to bring $8.5 million into the Maleny community from spectator accommodation associated activities • will require major road changes, repairs, reconstructions and possibly realignments to make the track safe, as well as removing all signs, guideposts and other structures and possibly trees and vegetation from the road reserves. Those living on the route will be offered two VIP passes for the four days to compensate for the inconvenience. According to Mr Rollins, the area is well known and utilised as a road bike touring location and the rebranding of Maleny as the motorbike touring hub of Australia will only have positive benefits for the sustainability of region.

74 Simpson Street, Beerwah Caring for the Hinterland community for over 18 yrs

But now for some bad news. As became apparent at the community meetings, some of the projected benefits are possibly somewhat premature in nature; others are a little thin on detail; and some could only be described as devoid of reality. The projected $8.5 million figure was based on over 16,000 spectators spending about $170 a night in the area. A basic understanding of the area would show that there is nowhere near enough accommodation for 16,000 (or more) spectators to give Maleny the $8.5 million windfall … let alone the Sunshine Coast at large. And with the event planned for the first week of school holidays, it would be unlikely that accommodation providers would need a special event to fill their already booked rooms. The track would need the approval of Motorcycling Australia through Motorcycling Queensland. According to Mr Rollins, both

organisations have yet to be formally approached. It has been suggested by people that there is not enough time for the track to be inspected, assessed, issues identified and rectified before December 17 next year. The Department of Transport and Main Roads have yet to be formally approached and most of the 47 kilometres of the circuit is on their roads. Council’s assessment process is yet to have commenced, and will rely on information from Motorcycling Queensland and Main Roads before progressing. Any changes, repairs, modifications and alterations to the roads on the circuit were identified by Mr Rollins as being the responsibility of council and Main Roads to pay for. It is unfortunate that the promotion of the event as imminent cannot be borne out by the realities of what actually needs to happen before such a colossal event can be made into reality – let along with only 18 months between now and race day.

Do you want more family time? Business feature

Ricky Wood is currently working as an operator and trainer in the mining industry. While he works on an even time roster and enjoys working in the industry, he hopes to start a family in the near future and so is looking at innovative ways to facilitate a viable future lifestyle change. Ricky and his wife Belinda have been together for eight years and married for three, and the young couple are keen to start a family in the future with the hope that Ricky will be able to be around to enjoy fatherhood while also maintaining an income. The hardworking couple are keen to establish their own business and so when they came across reseller opportunities for Transportable Shade Sheds, they decided to explore the business potential. Belinda is an accountant with a local accountancy firm and Ricky has worked in the mining industry for eight years following on from previous experience in the automotive spare parts industry. The pair are both financially and business savvy and share an entrepreneurial spirit. They realise that owning their own business will allow them to pursue both financial and personal goals. After careful consideration, the couple established ‘Shade Effect’ based in the Mackay region, earlier in the year. They are currently still working in their other jobs but are busy establishing themselves as resellers of Transportable Shade Sheds up to Airlie Beach and south towards Sarina. Ricky’s work near Moranbah has also generated a fair bit of interest from that region as well. Through the collaboration of Transportable Shade Sheds and cloud based marketing and mentorship platform Saver6.com, this type of innovative thinking ahead is both encouraged and practically supported. Saver6.com has recently launched an online magazine saver6magazine. com that seeks to motivate and inspire small business operators just like Ricky and Belinda. The couple are determined to make their business work and are throwing themselves into a targeted and indentified business plan that will allow them to achieve their long term goals. Their vision is for the business to grow systematically and eventually transition into a fulltime business that can be managed by Ricky. The nature of entrepreneurship is explored further in the new Saver6. com online magazine. In a recently published article on the new site, the following was observed … “One very obvious difference between creative dreamers and entrepreneurs is the self-starting approach, the will and determination to make things happen, the desire to see results and the belief in trying harder, entrepreneurs typically take action.” According to the article, taking risk, business focus and determination are all qualities associated with entrepreneurial thinking and these are all qualities that Ricky and Belinda display in their approach to their new Transportable Shade Shed venture. If you have friends or family in the Mackay region interested in the multitude of practical uses that a Transportable Shade Shed can offer, then get in touch with Ricky on 0428 721 228 or check out Shade Effect on social media. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or have an entrepreneurial spirit with the determination to be your own boss then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

Community feedback still The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) recent community consultation at Landsborough and Glass House regarding planned rail crossing closures at Barrs Road, Glass House and Landsborough (as part of the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project) has made some locals put on their thinking caps to come up with alternative solutions. One such resident is Dave Ritson from Beerwah who has thought hard and generated some concepts which he thinks may be better options. Dave explained that the sessions were simply to get some feedback on eliminating the two open level crossings (OLC).

open for rail crossing closures “For the Barrs Road crossing, they provided drawings for two options that connected Barrs Road to the Burgess Street overpass,” he said. “Neither was particularly good. I provided a variation of one option that would provide what I consider to be a better outcome. “For Landsborough they didn't even provide any options, just an aerial photo of the township. I have created a concept drawing for an overpass solution which I consider to be a plausible plan.” Dave points out that the government’s planning is in the early stages. “The government has a desire to eliminate OLC's wherever possible. To do this in Landsborough will require some significant changes to the road network feeding the town, and much planning and coordination between Queensland Rail and TMR. “So it is important to get options like this in early for consideration. The cost of doing this will be significant and will test the resolve to eliminate the OLC. “However, in the long term it will become essential regardless,” he said. The Department's decision to close the Landsborough open level crossing may be a difficult one for some in the community to stomach, but will most likely be a necessity. In explanatory notes, Dave sets out his concept for an overpass which keeps through traffic flowing close to the centre of town, rather than away from town as happened in Beerwah, which resulted in the business centre being bypassed. He recognises that due to the design layout of the

township itself, it will not be an easy task. Some of the features of his design include: • an overpass between the Steve Irwin Way and Maleny Street • three new intersections with traffic signals to create better and safer traffic flows • greatly expanded ‘park and ride’ carpark for the Landsborough station • more parking for the Landsborough Hall. Dave acknowledges that there will be problems for the BP petrol station when the crossing is closed. He suggests that suitable land could be found to have the business remain in the area. A considerable benefit of the configuration is that it provides for easy, convenient routes throughout the associated roads that are able to cope with increasing traffic volumes and, it has little impact on the visual amenity in the heart of town. The Department of Main Roads is still looking for community comment and suggestions regarding the Barrs Road and Landsborough rail level crossings. You can either call 1800 785 974, email B2N@ tmr.qld.gov.au or post them to The B2N Project Team, GPO Box 50, Brisbane QLD 4000. Another good idea is to let the relevant local State Member know of your concern or idea – Mark McArdle for the Landsborough crossing, and Andrew Powell for the Glass House crossing. For more details on Dave’s concepts – including his schematic plans – go to our ‘Hot Off The Press’ webpage (www.gcnews.com.au/ content/1191/hotoffthepress.aspx).

Business LocalNews News Maleny Commerce Update With Spencer Shaw

Thanks to Natalie Cook from the Small Business Project for her presentation at our June Networking Breakfast. Great insight into setting and achieving goals that applies not only to business, but life in general. Thanks also to our hosts Norman and Kate of Colin James Fine Foods for hosting our June event. The Maleny Show Window Dressing Competition was an outstanding display of the creativity hidden behind many shop windows on Maple Street and the competition was fierce with 19 participants and seven winners! A great show of support for the Maleny Show from Maple Street and we look forward to this event being even bigger next year. Support your local businesses who display culture and creativity. The inaugural Knitfest was held from June 10 to 12 in Maleny and this was yet again a great display of the creativity of Maleny. Ninja Nan’s and others yarn-bombed the parks and the main street in a celebration of textile craft.

Congratulations to Debs Swain and her team for stitching this great event together and I look forward seeing it back in town, bigger, better and woollier in 2017. Parking in Maleny continues to be an issue. As our town and tourist numbers grow it becomes increasingly difficult to find a parking spot right in front of the shop you’d like to get to. However, Maleny Commerce is working with shop owners to reduce staff parking on the main street and with Sunshine Coast Council to increase parking areas and provide parking information to the general public to reduce the pressure on Maple Street. In addition I would encourage residents of Maleny to assist in reducing our need for more parking spots by car pooling, walking, cycling, hang gliding (just checking your reading!) with all the associated benefits this brings to our environment and health. Keep up the good business and see you in the New Financial Year.

Howard Walker of Peachester has been a trustee of the Peachester Hall for 55 years, also serving as secretary to the Hall Committee, throughout most of that period. The Trustees felt that this remarkable achievement should be recorded, and Howard’s dedicated service recognised. Peachester History Committee member Joe Holland produced a pyrographic sketch of the Hall, which was then framed by Wally Breton in red cedar from the Breton farm. At the PHC meeting on Sunday, June 5, Bruce Page (Chairman of the Trustees) presented the framed picture to Howard, on behalf of the Hall Committee and the community, with thanks for his remarkable period of service.

Big dreams

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News recently spoke with up and coming dancer Nailani Jones about her success at the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod. Nailani, six, from Landsborough’s Black Swan School of Dance, received a highly commended for her jazz solo at the Eisteddfod, as well as the judges’ encouragement award for the U6 category. Her dancing journey started at the age of two with dreams of being a ballerina, and it was not long after that she enrolled at Black Swan under the tutelage of owner Mrs Rebecca. Describing dancing as ‘awesome fun’, Nailani said she most enjoyed the friends she had made

Current and former first officers cut the cake Mark Jakeman, Dennis Buckley, Trevor Jakeman and Craig Young The recent Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade open day and 25 year celebration created plenty of interest and was a great success. The day was attended by about 60 members of the local community as well as many members of the brigade. The community participated in fire extinguisher displays and lots of children enjoyed Blazer the Bear and rides on the Lil squirt truck. A highlight of the day was cutting the celebration cake by the four past and present First officers of the last 25 years who are all still active members of the brigade. The day was a great showcase for Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade who continues to protect the local community.

at Black Swan along with learning correct dancing technique. And while her ambitions are as lofty as her talent – she plans to dance around the world and become a qualified dance teacher like Mrs Rebecca – the next big challenge is the end of the year concert.

Knitfest a fibrous success Contributed by Debs Swain (event co-ordinator) This year's inaugural Knitfest – Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival was brilliant! The numbers exceeded our expectations and a fun time was had by all. Everywhere you looked there was an infusion of art, colour, creativity, yarnbombing with knitting and crochet. The cows outside Woolies and the Dr Who Tardis on the local Police Station wall attracted the most attention. Highlights of the event were the many decorated competition trees adorning the main street. 1st prize in Category 1, Best dressed tree, went to the Secret Housewives of Maleny with their entry 'Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' while 2nd place went to the CWA ladies and their 'Eat more fruit and veg' tree. Honourable mention went to the Caloundra Yarnbombers tree in Tesch Park. The Glasshouse Country & Maleny News entry ‘Galah’ covering the logging equipment in Tesch Park, caused a bit of a stir, and received a lot of attention. The many fibre art workshops were a hit with many people going to more than one workshop. The Exibition Hall created a lot of interest with its many displays by the workshop presenters, guest speakers and patrons enjoyed learning to spin wool at the Spinning Display showing spinning from start to finish. The many markets during the festival were a great place to grab a bargain or buy something unique and handmade. This year's competition winners were: Category 2 – Best beanie 1st Barbara Scott and 2nd place to Cheryl Robinson Category 3 – Best Scarf, Shawl or Socks 1st went to Barbara Scott and 2nd to Renate Kirkpatrick Category 4 – Best Tea Cosy 1st and 2nd place went to Renate Kirkpatrick. The yarnbombed bus, believed to be the first in Australia, travelled around the festival precinct and surrounds showing patrons the sights. First prize in the raffle, a weekend at Pomodoras, valued at $400.00 went to Debbie Rossow with other prizes going to Robyn Glynn, Brianna Ahrenfeld, Tim Hunt, Alannah, Roxanne Loxton, Pam Styles and Megan Woods. Knitfest would like to thank all of their sponsors for helping make this event possible. It would not have happened without the support of the local business community. It was hard not to pick up on the intense joy the event caused putting a smile on the local community and the many visitors over the weekend. Preparations have already begun for next year’s event.

Accomplished chorister makes debut as soloist Viera Keogh became a citizen last Australia Day. Arriving in Australia from Slovakia via Great Britain, Viera has been singing in choirs since she was eightyears-old. She toured with the Ladies Slovak choir that won international competitions in Wales, France, Belgium, Sweden, Canada, and Spain. Next, she sang with the London Philharmonic choir for a couple of years, before moving to Hampshire. Viera joined the Maleny Singers in 2015. She sang in the groups highlights from ‘Carmen’ in 2015. Viera will sing the mezzo-soprano role of Cousin Hebe in the Maleny Singers’ production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘HMS Pinafore’. “Although I have performed in front of hundreds of people, I have never sung an opera nor operetta nor played a theatre, so this is my first real experience,” Viera said. The role of Hebe is particularly important to those in the chorus, as they pick up many of their lines from her. Viera has thrown herself wholeheartedly into the role, memorising it before her first rehearsal. Hebe is first cousin to Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty (tenor Phil Simmons). When Sir Joseph is disappointed in his pursuit of Josephine (soprano Evalee Sharples) he turns for consolation to Hebe. Performances will take place at Maleny Community Centre, commencing on Friday, June 24 with an evening performance at 6.30pm. Block bookings 5499 9033, Matinees will be held on Saturday, June 25, at 4.00pm and Sunday at 2.00pm. Tickets are adult $30.00, concessions $27.50 and primary school children $15.00. They can be booked by phoning the Maleny Visitor Centre on 5499 9033 or on line www.trybooking.com.

On Saturday, June 18 police from Beerwah Division executed a forestry enforcement operation to address the behaviours of recreational riders and four-wheel-drive enthusiasts around all major portions of forestry within the Beerwah and Landsborough Divisions. Local police were assisted by officers from Nambour and Landsborough Road Policing Units, Road Drug Testing Unit, Sunshine Coast District Tactical Crime Squad, Caloundra, Kawana Waters and Maleny Police. Staff from Queensland Transport Compliance and HQ Plantations also participated. The operation provided proactive enforcement together with educating riders and drivers who use forestry tracks for recreational use. Police further addressed areas of concern and issues as identified members of the community. Offences such as the use of unregistered and uninsured vehicles, speeding offences, unsafe and dangerous operation of vehicles, suspect drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and suspected use of illicit substances within the forestry areas were addressed. Officers utilised trail bikes and four wheel drive vehicles to conduct mobile patrols of various tracks with interceptions of vehicles and riders, also static RBT/interception sites, conducting random breath tests, drivers licence and person checks, vehicle inspections, street checks and intelligence gathering. As a result, four people were charged with drink driving offences, two with unlicensed driving and one disqualified driver. A total of 13 Traffic Infringements were issued for a variety of offences such as speeding, failure to wear seat belts, defective and unregistered vehicles. A total of 26 people were the subject of street checks and five offences were prosecuted by the Queensland Transport Compliance officers. Staff from HQ Plantations were on hand to educate riders and drivers on their responsibilities and acquiring relevant permits associated with safe four-wheel-driving and trail bike riding through plantation and forestry areas. Information about permits is available on the HQ Plantations website. These combined forestry operations will continue in the future to ensure the safety off all persons that wish to visit forestry areas and to provide a safe environment for all recreational riders and drivers to enjoy. Police encourage the public to continue reporting any suspicious activity, or offenders, in and around the plantation and forestry areas to Policelink on 131 444 or online here, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. In an emergency call triple zero (000).

Beerwah Writers Group

Contributed by John Wright Our monthly exercise was to write a short story on the topic ‘Theramin’, the purpose being to replicate what many newspaper contributors experience – having to write on a subject that they know nothing about. Research is required and facts confirmed and the writers responded well to this exercise and the stories presented were excellent. Neville, of course, took a different approach and made Leon Theramin into a circus performer. John B gave us a glimpse of the spiritual world. Bob made an impact with his brief but precise biography of the instrument maker. Martin described a congruence of 273 Japanese Theraminists playing ‘Amazing Grace’. Paul explained the wide use of Theramin music in films, theatre, concerts and television backgrounds. Trevor composed a history of Theramin, his instrument, his music and his personal life. As a contrast, Kate presented an excerpt from her latest book, a passage in which Earthlings and Planetarians are involved in a ‘search and rescue’ mission among radioactive human bodies, space junk and a man-made planet. There are still a few places for new members. Annual membership is $5.00. For more information telephone Paul Stevens 5438 7910 or check our website beerwahwriters.com Our next meeting is at 10.00am on Friday, June 24 at Beerwah Library.

The Mountain Quilters Inc

Contributed by Debbie McLean We had our bi-annual quilt show at the Peachester Hall on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15. As part of the event we hold a raffle and funds from the raffle go to Sunshine Linus and this year we were able to hand over a cheque for $4,385.00. The organisation is a non-profit group of volunteers who provide quilts and other comforts to those in need, living in the community. The happy raffle winners were 1st Prize - Fay Beutel (large quilt), 2nd Prize - Fran Croomer (small quilt) and 3rd Prize - Margaret McIntyre (cushions).

Living - Arts Mutual Respect

‘Mutual Respect’ aptly describes this exhibition of paintings by four of Queensland’s most renowned artists. Rex Backhaus-Smith, Rick Everingham, Tom McAulay and Michael Nicholas are finally exhibiting together, despite having known each other for many decades. From the late 1960s, each has pursued his own very successful career, but their lives often crossed both personally and at awards, galleries and charity events. The easy-going banter and mateship between them is based on a shared history and a true respect for the others’ skills. They are now all represented at ‘Art on Cairncross’ and so the group exhibition transpired. Their talents are obvious as Rex has completed stunning new contemporary works inspired by the land and birdlife of the Outback, while Rick has portrayed views as varied as the Glasshouse Mountains and Venice. Tom has captured characters from the bush to the courtroom and Michael shows his passion for the

Rick Everingham, Rex Backhaus-Smith, Tom McAulay and Michael Nicholas desert’s rough beauty, but everyone has a range and depth to enthral. They bring the confidence of experience to allow their art to speak for itself. “Really we just all started out wanting to share what we saw,” says Rex “and while our works have evolved, that aim continues to remain the same.” Together they personify a significant part of the State’s visual arts of the last half century and this exhibition allows a rare opportunity to proudly celebrate such a strong cultural heritage. ‘Mutual Respect’ will be on display from June 25 – July 10 at ‘Art on Cairncross’, Cairncross Corner, Maleny. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10.00am to 5.00pm. More details at www.artoncairncross.com.au

Timber sculpture reflect beauty of nature By Lea Parkes While it may have been raining when we arrived at the unveiling of a beautiful timber sculpture, created by local artist Barry Smith at the Maleny Community Precinct, it did not dampen the spirits of those involved in the project. The sculpture has been a collaboration of the Maleny Green Hills Fund, True Cut Furniture and Art4place and has been positioned at the entrance to the community art installation Peace in the Trees, a previous project undertaken by Art4place. The sculpture is made up of two pieces, a horizontal piece that can be used as a seat to stop and pause during the walk, and a vertical piece that has been made from a piece of local spotted gum. Artist Barry explained it was found by Rhyce Skodnik from True Cut Furniture laying in a local paddock.

The timber has been combined with side plates of etched aluminium depicting elements of nature, including vegetation and flowing water. Barry describes his piece as a traditional marker to identify a location on a journey, and incorporates a Japanese aesthetic combining strength and softness. The materials will age and change over time and as the tree planting continues to establish, the sculpture will remain relevant and be absorbed into its natural surroundings. Supporting artists and connecting communities Open Studio Weekend For June, Arts Connect Inc. will have more artists studio’s to visit as part of their signature Open Studio weekend program. Seven artists will open their creative studio space to the public on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26. The ‘Open Studios’ initiative was launched in August 2015, and allows members of the public to gain an intimate insight into the studio workspace of member artists on the last weekend of every month. President Heather Gall says the trail is building into a must see on the monthly calendar, attracting visitors to the region. “I’d love visitors to dip into the world of a working artist, download a map each month from www. artsconnectinc.com.au and wander around our beautiful SC Hinterland, discovering unique and special artworks as they go,” she said. This month’s drive through the Hinterland will take interested visitors to studios from Peachester and Maleny, through to Flaxton and onto Mapleton. Enjoy the countryside and experience the different artistic styles of Annie McIntosh, Jane Nicol, Judy Berlak, Judi Parkinson, Marilyn Cook, Kaye Leach and Heather Gall. The Open Studio weekend features artists that produce work in a variety of mediums including ceramics, textiles, watercolours, acrylics, oils, mixed media and photography. The trail is a great way to meet these talented Hinterland locals, chat about their inspirations and techniques and even perhaps purchase a piece of work directly from the artist. The event is open over the weekend from 10.00am until 4.00pm. June’s feature artist is Judy Berlak Judy paints with watercolour because she loves how it floods the page of her life with light - transparent, mysterious and mercurial. This practice is the culmination of years of apprenticeship with composition in photography, colour and design in silk and reflection as a teacher of the history of art followed by many years of watercolour tuition with the best Australian watercolourists. Working from her leafy architect-designed studio in Flaxton she has hung her work in many galleries and exhibitions including the Kenilworth Art Competition where she won the Landscape Prize in 2013. To find her studio, walk along the garden driveway to the steps and then turn left and stroll to the back of the house. The studio is located on a grassy knoll set amidst tall trees, and parking is available on the front to the right or on the street. Judy’s rainforest studio ‘Dallambara’ is located at 11 Alice Dixon Drive, Flaxton.

All location details and information about the artists can be found at the Arts Connect website www.artsconnectinc.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

Restore your precious memories at Beerwah Picture Framing Seb Messina’s personal passion for photography, combined with his extensive professional experience as a commercial photographer, underpins all aspects of his business at Beerwah Picture Framing. Seb is particularly passionate about the historical and emotional value of preserving family photographic memories. “Many people have a box of photos or negatives that go way back in time, often for many generations. These valuable images are a direct link with the past and provide a historical family collection that may become even more important to future generations so they should be carefully preserved,” explained Seb. Seb strongly believes that the original art should be preserved and remain unaltered. In his restoration process he captures the original image by doing a professional photo scan which he then works on in Photoshop to repair the ravages of time which may include fading, tears, scratches or insect damage. The size of the art is not a problem because Seb can scan the art with his scanner or set it up under his photographic studio lights and use his professional camera to capture the image. One popular trend is more and more people are using their own historical family photos to create unique and significant decorative art for their current living space.

Beerwah Picture Framing’s customers love the fact that the studio provides a one stop shop and service which allows a process like this to be extremely easy and hassle free. Seb consults with the customer and then does all the restoration work in house.

That packet of old negatives can be a real treasure trove of family history just waiting to be discovered. Because negatives are difficult to see and interpret with the naked eye the actual image is often not appreciated until it has been scanned and then displayed on a computer monitor. Seb has worked on all types of negatives and transparencies, from the common 35 mm film to the Kodak 620 film that was common in the fifties and used as the film of the famous Box Brownie. Seb can also scan 5”x4” and 8”x10” negative or transparency film. The restoration is then printed on photographic paper or canvas that replicates the finish of the original art, be it a photograph, painting or drawing. Seb uses the highest quality Epson Stylus Pro wide format printer with Epson inks and paper. By exclusive use of Epson products he is able to produce consistent results that have a very long life expectancy. At this time the printed restored art can be archived in an album or framed for display. Just as the print is printed on a media that replicates the stye of the original paper or canvas, the matting and framing should also be done, with the period and style of the art piece in mind. Seb advises his customers to store their original photographic art at a secure location, so that if by some unfortunate occurrence the restored piece is destroyed by fire or flood, the original will still be available for future restoration.

That special family photo can become a wonderful talking point as a quality art piece in your home, lovingly restored and beautifully framed by Beerwah Picture Framing. The restored artwork also provides an exceptional and poignant living memory that can be enjoyed and appreciated for generations to come. Bush Food Bounty The bounty of this land is considerable and native food plants that are must haves for your backyard include: Midyim (Austromyrtus dulcis) is a great low growing shrub/groundcover with attractive weeping foliage and tasty white berries, fresh from the bush – kids love them. Lillypilly’s (Syzygium spp.) are all edible (if you are hungry enough) but from our local ones the Riberry S. Luehmannii, is not only bountiful, but tastes good raw and even glazed in a sugar syrup. Davidson Plums (Davidsonia spp.) although not strictly local, are spectacular foliage specimens with their large leaves and large beautiful looking plum like fruit. They are a tad sour, but nothing that a few spoons of sugar can’t fix to make a great jam or syrup. Plum Pine (Podocarpus elatus) also produce a juicy succulent plum-like fruit with a pleasant pine taste and again, is fantastic for jams and syrups. Finger Limes are a great local treat and now highly sought after the world over. We have the cultivar Rainforest Pearl now available as grafted plants ready to fruit in just a few seasons. Then there are the native mints, native celery, native parsnip, yam, scrambling lily, tamarinds, sour cherry, bunya pine and many, many more. Taste the real Australia and add local flavours to your diet with local native plants in your backyard.

Environment Sculpture unveiled at community precinct

A timber sculpture has been unveiled at the Maleny Community Precinct, celebrating the environmental benefits of an award-winning upgrade to the nearby Unitywater Sewage Treatment Plant. The $17m treatment plant upgrade, completed in 2014, involved the creation of a 13.8-hectare irrigated forest and a three-hectare wetland. This allowed Unitywater to harness the filtration powers of nature to improve sewage treatment standards, transform degraded land into a thriving habitat for flora and fauna, and beautify the Maleny Community Precinct. The project won a United Nations World Environment Day Award in 2015. On Tuesday, June 14, Unitywater partnered with Maleny District Green Hills Fund to host another of its successful Creekside Greening events. Unitywater staff joined Green Hills volunteers to plant 480 native rainforest plants along the banks of the Obi Obi Creek. “We are really pleased that Unitywater has continued its commitment to the rehabilitation of these important open space areas,” Maleny Green Hills Director/Project Manager Ron Sharp said. “This is the third planting in this area. We worked with Unitywater to plant 1,500 trees in 2013 and we planted another 300 seedlings and 100 Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vines last year. “It is especially rewarding to see this continued support from Unitywater, which enables us to care for and maintain this unique and significant riparian zone and walking trail.” Unitywater General Counsel and company secretary Jane Nant officially unveiled the new timber totem sculpture on the day. “Unitywater commissioned the sculpture to be a natural reminder of the significance of a project that really is a green engineering success story. It features aluminium etchings that represent the purity of the water, the power of community collaboration and the new life created. “It is a beautiful and lasting testament to a partnership Unitywater is truly proud of.” Maleny Green Hills Project Manager Ron Sharp with artist Barry Smith and Unitywater General Counsel Jane Nant (See page 20 for more on the sculptural piece)

with Sue Tanner When GC&M News sent me the reminder for this literary masterpiece my first thought was – what has happened this month? Some very welcome rain in recent days has our tank and garden smiling and having the fire glowing at night is always comforting – must be winter. The rainforest is beautiful after rain, everything is washed clean. The amazing ‘drip tip’ leaves on the canopy and under storey trees ensure the rain travels all the way to the forest floor and now, with a little humidity you will see multiple fungi blooming. Some of these fungi are spectacular, brilliant colours, shapes and sizes. Children are strangely attracted to fungi and once you point out any of them on a walk, they are instantly seeing them everywhere. If a sample can be picked up, on a small log or stick, there is always much pondering about how it is growing, does it have roots and so on. Work is now well underway on the building site. Surprising how many visitors, even local people, we have who know nothing of the development and the usual cry is ‘where is the café?’ I believe council is almost at the point of ‘employing’ a mobile coffee van – good idea. The next meeting of the Friends of Mary Cairncross will be on July16 at 10.00am in the Verandah Room of the Community Centre, 9.30am for tea or coffee to begin. We are hoping to have a guest speaker who made one of the original tree species lists and knows a great deal about our patch. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Kondalilla Eco Resort (formerly Tree Houses of Montville)

As the new manager of Kondalilla Eco Resort located in the Hinterland rainforest, I was given the task of sourcing the services of a company that was similar minded in their ethos. Thus, a professional, knowledgeable, familiar with Eco-friendly products and willing to offer advice and recommendations on improvements we were wanting to create, be able to explain an issue, offer clear resolution, and resolve it quickly. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find (S.C.E.D) Southern Cross Electrical Data met all these requirements and more. Ash and his team were the perfect solution in repairing, solving and upgrading all of our electrical and air-conditioning issues and went above and beyond anything we ever expected. Every problem, whether it was an emergency or a scheduled service, was resolved and completed in a timely professional manner. We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support and the amazing work ethic that S.C.E.D offers each and every time we have needed their services. I personally and professionally recommend S.C.E.D for all your household or company electrical concerns.

You Said It Australian Liberty Alliance ignorance

I refer to John Spellman’s (Australian Liberty Alliance) misinformed and ignorant rant that ‘FTAs have been a curse on this country’. It shows that he and his ALA members want to take Australia back to the dark ages with their brand of xenophobia and ignorance. It is a well established economic fact that FTAs promote stronger trade and commercial links between participating countries and open up opportunities for Australian exporters and investors to expand their business interests. For instance, under the Australia-US FTA 97% of tariffs covering Australia’s non-agricultural exports to the US enter duty free and 99% of US merchandise exports into Australia enter duty free. Who benefits? Australian exporters, particularly services exporters have access to one of the largest markets (350 million consumers) in the world, while US exporters have access to a market of 23 million people. Figure that out Mr Spellman. In addition FTAs eliminate all non-tariff barriers (those behind the barrier borders that are so difficult to identify), provide access to massive government procurement markets for Australian exporters, allow access to new and often larger services markets, allow cheaper access to inputs for Australian manufacturers and promote greater investment flows. The recently concluded FTAs with China, Japan and Korea strengthens Australia’s links with the dynamic North Asia region. In 2013 Australian merchandise exports to these three countries amounted to $161 billion compared with imports of $76 billion. Services exports stood at $10.5 billion compared to services imports of $5.03 billion. Who is gaining? Figure that out Mr Spellman. This figure is expected to increase ten-fold in the next five to 10 years. In particular, the China Australia FTA will enable Australian services exporters to gain access to China’s burgeoning services sector, which is the largest contributor to China’s GDP. Furthermore, Australian agricultural exporters will have access to a market of one billion people,

Send your letter to email: editorial@gcnews.com.au fax: 5438 7446 post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519

people who crave for clean, eco-friendly and unadulterated food from Australia. Figure that out Mr Spellman. As a former trade negotiator with DFAT I find Mr Spellman’s contribution to the economic debate ignorant, xenophobic and totally inconsistent. Trade and investment are the engines of growth in the Australian economy. Both enhance living standards and employment, particularly for our youth. Roy Clogstoun Maleny

Re - Car parking funding announcement for Caboolture Hospital

How sad it is that it took Wyatt Roy’s Caboolture Hospital car park funding announcement on the morning of Tuesday, June 14 to force the Palaszczuk Labor Government into agreeing to allocate state funds for this desperately needed project. They should be ashamed of themselves that it took a Federal Government commitment to make them come kicking and screaming to the table with their cheque book in hand. The wellbeing of our Caboolture community deserves much more than this and the state Government should be ashamed of the way they have manipulated this situation. In recent years I have made it a personal mission to secure funding for additional car parks at this hospital and stood proudly with my former colleagues and then members for Pumicestone and Morayfield, Lisa France and Darren Grimwade, during the 2015 election campaign to promise it would be delivered from a re-elected LNP Government. I have been fighting for funds ever since and am grateful that Wyatt Roy MP came to the party with his own funding promise. It really is disgraceful that the health of the Caboolture community has been used for political gain in a project that is so clearly needed by this region. Andrew Powell MP

Riddled with errors

Claims made by GetUp in social media regarding hospital funding in Maleny, Nambour and Caboolture are riddled with errors and fail the most basic understanding of how our hospital system is funded. GetUP’s hospital numbers pre-date the agreement between the current Prime Minister and the States and Territories which injected an extra $2.9 billion into our public hospital system. This agreement increased funding in Queensland to more than $19.4 billion over five years. That means hospitals are substantially better off than in the GetUp numbers. GetUp’s whole campaign is based on Labor’s unfunded $57 billion hospital funding fantasy. And now Labor won’t even support their own policy! It exposes GetUP/Labor’s scare campaign about hospitals as a disgusting and despicable sham trying to scare the sick and vulnerable. GetUp should apologise for misleading the people of Queensland. Shop local?

Sometimes you question the advantage of shopping locally, particularly when it might mean you pay a little more. So I decided to share this story with you. Just over two years ago I needed to purchase a battery for my car. I made the decision to shop locally at Bridgestone Select in Maleny as opposed to going off the mountain and buying it from somewhere on the coast. Well, as sometimes happens – and more often these days than years ago – the item in question failed one month after the two year warranty had expired. I made contact with the company in question and was very pleased when told, that despite the item being out of warranty, the business would replace it at no cost to me. Now, I was very surprised that they would do this but, in hindsight, it was good for their business as well to keep me and others shopping locally. I am also sure that had I purchased this item

Hinterland Finance & Sustainability Expo Our team at Maleny Credit Union are really looking forward to being part of the first Hinterland Finance & Sustainability Expo which will be held at the Maleny Showground Pavilion on Saturday July 23 between 9.00am and 3.00pm. We have partnered with Maleny Commerce to create an event that will give locals and visitors the opportunity to improve their understanding about financial literacy, learn more about making ethical investments, as well as tips to growing businesses in sustainable communities. With the support of funding from Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program and the exhibitors on

the day, we are able to offer this as a free event which will keep everyone’s budgets happy. We have expert guest speakers and panellist lined up for the day and a real highlight is that we have been able to attract Dale Symons, Financial Education Officer from ASIC’s MoneySmart. Dale is coming from Canberra to attend the event and share his knowledge and passion surrounding financial guidance. I am sure that attendees will be impressed by not just the expert guest speakers but the interesting panel discussions along with the range of 36 business exhibitors.

Eat, Drink & on the coast, the outcome would have been different. I am happy to share this story with your readers as it is important to keep local businesses operating. Matthew Rapkins Maleny

On proposed 2017 Sunshine Coast TT

Firstly, I’m a 55-year-old motorcycle rider. I live on the proposed route of the race. Not all of us live in Maleny. I think the idea is brilliant, the money bought into the area will be enormous, as the businesses have been suffering a downturn of late and this is a sure money spinner. The international tourism spinoffs of this event have great benefits. Also, road and infrastructure improvements have to be a bonus. I was planning to go to the Isle of Mann TT, in 2017. I will cancel that trip if this race eventuates and spend my money here. The sheer brilliance of these bike riders is a must to witness. Yes, I moved here for peace and quiet, however it’s not all about me. Not everyone who lives around here is ready for slippers and a cardigan. Let your hair down and scream if you want to go faster. Four days of inconvenience is little to give up for the benefit of all who live here. Dave Morgan Peachester

Big thanks to Beerwah IGA

I wanted Yorkfoods Australian beef dripping and they now stock it. I've requested Japanese turnips, and they're sourcing them for me. I love that my local store is happy to source and stock items for me, especially as I've a kid with a lot of food allergies. Supa IGA stores have now expanded their ranges; have competitive fruit and veg prices and price match other large grocery stores. Sounds like an ad, doesn't it? However I don't work for the store, I just want locals to know how helpful they are because I hope they'll support the store that will actually support them when they need something. Council’s proposed projects

One of the Sunshine Coast Council’s proposed projects that has caught my eye is the solar power farm near Coolum. I jumped onto their website to check it out. The plan seemed straight forward. This project would save the council money by producing and selling their own power. According to the cost estimate, if the council did nothing, then over the next 30 years they would spend $319.2m on energy. With this project they would only spend $291.1m, a saving of $22.1m. Spread over 30 years this amounts to around $733,666 per year. Whilst this is no small sum, in the great scheme of things it’s pretty insignificant. One of the items that intrigued me was ‘Large Scale Generation Certificates @ $22.6m’ I emailed the organisation to try and find out what these were, as without them the project would actually lose $0.5m. As yet I have not received a reply. My understanding is that they are a pseudo currency used by the Renewable Energy Industry. I am not sure who pays for them, but I suspect www.gcnews.com.au

that it will be Ergon or us tax/rate payers. Either way we will be paying. Is it worth the $61m build and maintenance cost for such a small return? Can someone explain what these certificates are? Derek Browning Glass House Mountains

TT racing event

Hinterland residents, particularly those in Maleny, should be aware of a proposal to the Sunshine Coast Council for approval to conduct an annual major international four day high speed motor cycle racing event in Maleny residential areas – yes, residential areas, and on local access roads. Maleny has been promoted for many years as an iconic tourist venue because of its heritage, as a desirable place for retirement, and has developed a popular arts and crafts culture and reputation for quality restaurants, with visitors appreciating the scenic and rural lifestyle atmosphere. The proposal for motor cycle racing is totally at odds with the image residents have endeavoured to create for Maleny, and for council to even contemplate allowing such activity within a residential area is inconceivable. Because of its popularity, traffic density in Maleny is normally at a high level. The traffic chaos caused by the proposed event would extend far beyond Maleny. Road closures would disrupt resident’s activities, and areas of Maleny would be isolated to vehicle traffic and essential services. Noise levels would be extreme over a wide area from motor cycles at 260 km/hr and from low flying helicopter coverage. There are indications that the SCC favours the proposal and the application could be approved without adequate community consultation. Once one such invasive activity is permitted, others will follow. The route would become popular with wannabe Moto GP riders throughout the year, and real estate values would suffer. The community should waste no time in expressing to the SCC its disapproval of and objection to this absurd and outrageous proposal. G. Bradford Maleny

Free workshop on how to manage your Type 2 diabetes

Beauty Specialists

FREE BROW SCULPT

Beerwah Barber your hinterland barber specialists

You can learn to better manage your diabetes at a free four hour workshop in Maroochydore on Wednesday, June 29. Diabetes is one of the fastest growing chronic diseases in Australia, with one in four adults being diagnosed with the disease or a condition known as pre-diabetes. In Queensland, more than 50 people are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes each day. There is thought to be just as many who are undiagnosed and at high risk. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service is running a workshop called ‘Type 2 Diabetes and Me’ for people who are newly diagnosed, need a refresher or have been told by their General Practitioner (GP) they have pre-diabetes. Workshop coordinator Jenny O’Dwyer said participants would gain valuable knowledge about Type 2 diabetes, become better informed with skills to live a healthier lifestyle, and reduce their risk of diabetes complications. This workshop will be held from 9.00am to 1.00pm on Wednesday, June 29 at the Maroochy RSL Sub-branch, Memorial Avenue, Maroochydore. To be eligible to attend this workshop, you must be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, confirmed by your GP, be over 18 years of age, have your own transport, be able to attend group education for four hours, and be able to learn in the company of others. If you meet the eligibility criteria above, please register your interest for the workshop by calling Central Intake on 5450 4747. While a referral from your GP is not necessary, bookings are essential. www.gcnews.com.au

Thali is an Indian meal made up of a selection of various dishes. It simply means a round platter used to serve food. According to Indian food serving customs, a proper meal should be a perfect balance of different flavours. At Bombay Bliss, our Thali comes with 2 curries, rice, puri, papadum, salad, raita, spring roll and daal. And all our curries are gluten free. Our Thali experience is available every Wednesday and Sunday, from Bombay Bliss Beerwah. www.gcnews.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

Meet your Candidates Jason Burgess

For this, I have put my hand up for the electorate of Fisher. I’m very passionate when it comes to our country, believing it’s not what the country can do for you, rather what you can do to make a difference in this country. We have a proud history of being there for mates, neighbours and the community when disasters happen. We banded together during floods, which shows the values and morals we have in this country. We must start thinking about us as nation of people not people of one nation. I will be pushing to ensure the people of my electorate get a proper voice in government, not one that will follow party lines, rather ensure the government hears the people’s voice and acknowledge what is needed to the public, not what’s best for politicians. Politicians are chosen by the people, to represent the people and to be the voice of the people. The people must come first, not the party policy.

has given me a unique skill set revolving around the love/safety of children and the family unit. No child should ever suffer from sexual/physical abuse. I have the privilege of working with many community groups, not-for-profit organisations, children's homes and women's refuges. I regularly engage in public speaking on these topics and co-ordinate events that bring positive change into the lives of women, men, children and the family unit. I advocate against the sexualising of our children in the school through the deception of the safe school program at cost of $8 million to the tax payers. No program has the legal right to take away the parents authority and go against the parents core and moral values that they raise their children on. Rise Up Australia believe in traditional marriage. No government has the authority to redefine marriage or the family unit. Every child needs a mum and dad, both are equally important and designed to nurture identity, worth, character and love in each child's heart, soul, mind. The Hinterland and Coast is the most beautiful place in Australia – the best place to live, work and raise a family. Let's protect our community, land and families, and stand united under one flag and the Australian law and put the people's hearts and voices first. July 2 will determine your children and grandchildren's lives and future.

I was born in 1971 in NSW, second youngest of five children into a hard-working and sporting rural living family. I love sports such as touch football, netball, and keep active with bush walking in the Glass House Mountains, snorkelling, scuba diving, parachuting and walking on our beautiful beaches with husband Paul and three children, three step-children and two grandchildren. Working with crops and sheep/cattle myself, I have a heart for the farmers and producers of the Hinterland. Our farmers and producers are the backbone of this nation. The government needs to change and put our farmers and their produce first. My career background started in business, sales and marketing. A Diploma in Business and Marketplace is the foundation of my entrepreneurial vision in my own business – Women of Worth and Identity – which I founded and have directed since 2014. Australia has a democratic system which many other nations only dream about. A vast majority of people in the world have no, or severely limited, rights to freely vote, choose their own representatives and government or to take umbrage with politicians or the system of government. Our democratic rights have been debated over, fought over and died over, and so it should be seen as a privilege to have the ability to make a mark on a ballot paper and have a say in how we want our society to function. Not voting or turning up and not making a valid vote, is not a protest. It’s just wasting your voice; negating your capability to have your say. If you vote for nobody, nobody will listen. If you think there’s no one worth voting for ... look harder. This year the local Fisher candidates come from a wide variety of backgrounds, Parties, view points and beliefs. If you say you don’t know anything about them … look harder. GC&M News has been (and will be up to the election) printing information in each edition. We have a page on our website – The Fight for Fisher – Federal Election 2016 – where we put everything we’ve published about the candidates (www. gcnews.com.au/content/669/2016Fisher.aspx). Each candidate has either a website or a Facebook page. Each candidate has contact details (we print them each week) so you can get in touch. There are meet the candidate meetings and opportunities (we generally advertise them) and the candidates can be seen out and about locally – so stop them and ask them what they stand for. Don’t just whinge and moan about politicians and what’s wrong with the world. Don’t be a passenger in the democratic process. Don’t fall back to just being one of the apathetic and disinterested. Use your voting voice, contribute and feel good about it.

Your vote is your voice

I was born and raised in the town of Bundaberg. In 2001, I enlist in the Infantry, Australian Army Reserves. In 2006, I transferred to the Australian Regular Army in Brisbane where I have been deployed to East Timor twice and Iraq once. In 2015, I was medically discharge from the Australian Defence Force. I was diagnosed with mental health issues which was unforeseen for many years. After seeking mental health treatment, I began to realise the impact mental health plays on the individual and how it has a flow on effect to family and friends.

Questions to the Candidates

Q1

The Higher Education Loans Scheme (HECS) debt is currently about $42 billion, but is projected to reach $185 billion by 2026, with reports saying much of this is unlikely to be repaid because the borrowers have moved overseas or earn less income than the taxable threshold. What should be done to reel in this drain on the public purse?

BILL GISSANE

Q1 The future of this country will be largely

determined by our approach to education. Tertiary, technical and vocational education and training are obviously integral to a successful outcome. For this reason, Labor has always led the way in providing the right environment to foster and encourage this education sector. Many readers will recall with great fondness Whitlam’s opening up of the tertiary system that enabled all Australians to find access to this vital

MIKE JESSOP

Q2 Sixteen-year-olds are more directly exposed opportunity. During the Hawke years, Labor again took the initiative by implementing HECS which allowed for an economically sustainable tertiary system. The vocational education and training system was incorporated into HECS and has been poorly managed by the government. Dodgy providers and fly by nighters have rorted the process and plunged it into debt. The founder of HECS, Professor Bob Chapman, has insisted that this current debacle should not detract from the future

Q1

The current HECS system is yet another incentive to under achieve. And there is little point in turning out graduates if there is no vocational pathway and they are not required, e.g. turning out 60,000 lawyers is enough when you need more doctors. Neither is there any point in educating to the second or third degree just to become a bus driver. For obviously, students should have high enough

Jason Burgess

marks to get in and funding should continue on a sliding scale based on their hard work and determination, targeting incentives for required subjects, e.g. doctors, maths science, bio medicine and dentistry. Rather like building a boat, the government should pay the non-refundable 50% deposit (for building the boat) and then pay for the trailer and outboard when it is acquired on their behalf, i.e. continue study and launch into a career. The government should pay half the fees up

Q1

HECS ensures every Australian gets the chance to go to university. But if people gain employment overseas or don't find work after they graduate; it’s both a debt on the government

Tracey Bell-Henselin

and also the person. So maybe it should come out from their tax return, or maybe a fortnightly/ weekly payment. We could have a set amount that is required each year, where it is some money but doesn't leave the person struggling.

Rise Up Australia Party

Email: Tracey.bell-henselin@ruap.org.au Facebook: women of worth and identity Facebook: Rise Up Australia Party QLD

Q1

I do believe the HECS debt needs to be reviewed and enforced. Education is our foundation, not just in our personal life, but also for the community we live and serve in. It is an honour to attend higher education here in Australia, there is no reason why this cannot be the case for all Australians. of a well-managed HECS. Once the current debt is written off, we need Labor to resume managing the system – it’s what we do best.

paid my fees by instalment plan. I was divorced, the sole bread winner for my three children and paying my house loan. I had a dream and worked hard to commit to those payments, which was tough but manageable. If I can do it, anyone can. So when we make the choice to study and commit to that, it is our responsibility to make payments, not pass the responsibility to the tax payers and drive our economy into more debt.

and impacted on by decisions and events than ever before. It’s a truism that they are literally the future of our country and our world. They have the enthusiasm and drive to shape that future. Let’s help them by giving them a greater opportunity to create the future they will inherent. Let’s also help them by sharing the experiences and learnings that many of us have accumulated over years and decades. We need them engaged. I look forward to seeing the voting age lowered and assisting the next generation in not only being smart, but wise as well. Together, we can do this!

front based on a high enough continued success rate and then continue to fund those who are determined to work hard and succeed and make sure they are certain about continuing. People who do not finish the course or under achieve and or who do not use their qualifications, should have to pay the money back – for those who disappear overseas presumably for a better offer this should also be the case until they return.

Q2 No, unless the age of majority is also

reduced. You should then be able to vote and stand on the committee when you are legally able to hold an ABN and contract, which is currently 18. And remember preferences are no good to an Independent on the day. Please Vote 1 Mike Jessop, and then give your preferences to other parties.

If overseas, they should still be required to pay off the debt. It’s a legal binding contract that says you want the government to help pay for your degree and that you will pay them back. Remember every tax payer funds the degree.

Q2 No, 16 is too young to make a formal

decision regarding what's best for Australia. If they did, then at 16 they will be able to be a candidate for elections (if so I will change my name to Justin Bieber). You can't have one without the other.

When people do their tax returns, payments need to come out to cover the HECS debt. They need to be locked into payment plans over a period of years.

Q2 Legal voting to stay at 18. I find in all

my meetings and talks in groups or one on one, most young people are not concerned about voting. I believe this needs to change. Our young adults need to be taught the importance with which their vote has for their country and future – employment, family, tax, social, education, worldview, religion, community and economy. They are the next generation to lead in their families, communities and marketplace of this great nation. They need to take this seriously so we can move forward in unity and knowledge and be informed. www.gcnews.com.au

Q1

The Coalition will ensure that the HECSHELP scheme remains sustainable by requiring Australian university graduates living overseas to begin making HECS debt repayments from July 2017, provided they meet the income threshold of $53,000 – when they have the capacity to make a contribution toward the cost of their education. This means that the Australian taxpayer will no longer shoulder the burden of overseas graduates’ HECS debts. The Turnbull Coalition Team is investing more than ever before in our universities, over

$16 billion in 2016, and funding for student places is at record levels. Since 2009, with the demand driven system, taxpayer funding for Commonwealth supported places in higher education has increased by 59% as compared to 29% growth in nominal GDP over the same period. Funding of university students has essentially grown at twice the rate of the economy. While we will invest $49.4 billion in Australian higher education and research over the next four years, we remain committed to pursuing reforms

John Spellman Australian Liberty Alliance Web: www.australianlibertyalliance.org

that will strengthen the contribution that our higher education and research institutions make to the Australian economy. In the budget, the Coalition released the next step in our moves to ensure higher education continues to support equitable access, excellence and innovation while also ensuring that the system is sustainable for this and future generations of students. Our paper, ‘Driving innovation, fairness and excellence in Australian higher education’, will ensure there is a reasoned and evidence-driven discussion on higher education reform, without full university fee deregulation.

Q2. I believe that the voting age should remain 18. In Australia, we recognise 18 as the age of adulthood. Young people have many opportunities to contribute to community life.

pay cheque. It might only need to be a modest 2% to start with, but increases as the graduate’s pay increases. A loan is a loan, and no graduate should be released from their obligation to pay back what they owe to the Australian taxpayer.

Q2 I believe that the current age of 18 is too Q1

At present, anybody can do a degree in just about anything and put the tab on HECS. I believe degrees where HECS would be available should be degrees in line with what we need to rebuild this nation. We don’t need people obtaining degrees in the decline of the Dodo Bird, but rather people gaining degrees in engineering, electrical, construction, IT, architectural and

LB JOUM

agricultural areas just to name a few. HECS should not be available to ‘professional studiers’ either. Strings can be attached to the loans, such as an undertaking to work for an agreed time in Australia before being allowed to work overseas. Or if a graduate decides to work overseas he/she must pay the loan out before leaving. A sliding scale can be implemented so that a graduate starts paying the HECS loan back from their very first

To be honest, I am not sure what the best solution is. I have heard information about this problem in the news and recognise that something needs to be done. I only know as much as other regular Australians. The question

is, do we trust our political process to make the best decision about this situation?

A fairer tax system will allow us to invest in education that is accessible to all Australians. Big corporations and the super wealthy paying their fair share would ensure we can afford world class institutions to harness the potential of every Australian. This is the backbone of a prosperous and fair Australia. Every person who continues with higher education benefits all of us. www.gcnews.com.au

Investing in education pays for itself in the long term. World-class higher education will make Australia a competitor for the industries and jobs of the 21st century. low, let alone allowing kids 16 years of age to vote. Even at 18, most young people do not have sufficient knowledge, wisdom or even the interest to understand the complex issues of our political system and how careless and thoughtless votes can cause damage to this nation. Let them get some life experience behind them first before forcing them to cast a vote. Personally, I’d like to see the voting age returned to 21 – by which time young adults should be better informed.

you are 16 or 17 you can enrol now so when you turn 18 you'll be able to vote.’ http://www.aec. gov.au/enrol/ The decisions we make today will affect the world that young people live in tomorrow, so they should have a voice in the decision making process. Because voting on our web platform www. pollyweb.org will ultimately be dependent on the person being registered with the AEC, we decided that if a person is 16 or older and they are registered with the AEC then they are eligible to vote, through us, on every bill before parliament. student start-up scholarships as grants. Our education plans have been fully costed by the Parliamentary Budget Office at $1.4 billion per year. By continuing the deficit levy on a permanent basis we will raise $1.55 billion per year, ensuring our plans are cost neutral and students' debt burden is borne by those who can most afford it.

Q2 In the 1970s young people believed they

should be able to vote at 18 as they were already paying taxes, driving cars, and could serve their country in times of war. I don’t believe a great deal has changed to reduce the age to 16, but I would listen to my electorate. JUNE 22 2016 |

Out & About The Lions roared at the Hideaway The Beerwah Lions Club held their annual Installation Dinner last weekend at the Hideaway B&B. The new owners of the business, Glen Kerr and Amanda Warren who moved in only three days previously, did a spectacular job in welcoming the Club members and their guests and providing a menu to remember. The event is a great opportunity for the group to look back on their achievements of the past year and to look forward to undertaking some new challenges in serving their community in the coming year. With 2017 being the 50th year since the club was formed, no doubt there will be plenty of preparation for the big event during this year.

Each of the authors will be in conversation with local author Steven Lang - at the Maleny Community Centre 6.00pm for 6.30pm. ‘The World Without Us’, Mireille Juchau’s third novel, is set somewhere in the Hinterland of NSW’s north coast, and concerns the Muller family, Evangeline, Stefan, and their two daughters, Tess and Meg. Stefan, a beekeeper, is originally from Germany, while Evangeline grew up on a commune in the hills behind where they live. The story weaves itself around the absence of a third daughter, Pip, and the way each member of the family deals with their grief at her loss. In the meantime it braids within its tapestry the radically changing landscape wrought by the work of miners and loggers, and the mysterious failing of Stefan’s hives. And introducing Elspeth Muir, author of ‘Wasted, a Story of Alcohol, Grief, and a Death in Brisbane.’ This non-fiction work has attracted remarkable reviews including ‘The prose style of this unheralded writer ... is so achingly beautiful and assured, Helen Garner might be pleased to hand her the keys to the creative non-fiction kingdom and ride off into the Carlton sunset’. Come at 5.30pm for our usual complimentary nibbles and bar run by the Community Centre. This time however, it will be upstairs in the Community Centre and will include Corrie Wright’s video projection on the tree across the road outside Peace of Green. Tickets are $18.00 and $12.00 for students, bookings are essential at the Maleny bookshop, phone 5494 3666.

School News Mooloolah State School visits Voices on the Coast

It was a chilly day in June when 12 students from Mooloolah State School visited the University of the Sunshine Coast for the Voices on the Coast Literature Festival. What do authors write about? How do they get their ideas? How do you draw those fabulous pirates or ninjas or superheroes to illustrate your story? These are some of the questions that the students hoped to answer. The budding authors from Years 4, 5 and 6 attended talks and workshops by well-known authors and illustrators like Leigh Hobbs, Peter Carnavas, Nova Weetman and Janeen Brian. At the end of the day there was time for book signings and photo opportunities with the favourite authors. A session about improvisation taught us that you need to take an idea and trust your instincts to let a story evolve. An author suggested that you should keep a notebook to record little things that you observe each day. You never know when those ideas might turn into a story. Who knows? Perhaps one of those fortunate Mooloolah students will one day have top-selling stories on the shelves of bookshops and libraries. All the students had a fabulous day and hope to put all that they learnt into their next pieces of writing!

Beerwah Primary branches out!

As part of Reconciliation Week this year, students from Beerwah Primary wrote meaningful messages on a paper leaf, which they then added to a communal tree, located in the school’s library. This tree and its leaves symbolise the coming together of our nation’s peoples to recognise Australia’s First Nation’s Peoples, their culture and is a celebration of tradition. Reconciliation week is held each year from May 27 until June 3. May 26 is the day before Reconciliation Week commences and is a significant event in Australian history. In 1998, this day became known as ‘Sorry Day’ and is now commemorated nationally to remember and honour the Stolen Generations. The slogan for Reconciliation Week this year is ‘Our History, Our Story, Our Future’. Beerwah Primary students were able to learn this through our hands-on experience. A big thanks goes to Mrs Searle and the teachers of Beerwah Primary for making this possible. Our students should also be commended on their efforts and achievement. The students took a lot of pride and respect in their work. Congratulations on such a wonderful achievement.

The Hills are alive

Contributed by Sally Joyce Recently five students from Peachester State School went to Chancellor Park State College to compete in ‘Fanfare’, a Queensland-wide Instrumental Band competition. Our students are part of The Hinterland Combined Instrumental band - a 41 piece band made up of students from Montville, Maleny, Conondale and Peachester. Shayla J plays flute and Jessie P, Carys B, Maddie S and Kyla P play clarinet. The band won Silver. Amazing! Thanks to Mr Paul Meneely the instrumental teacher who leads the band and well done girls. Author inspires Prep students

By Lin Smith Recently, all the Prep classes at Glasshouse Christian College were delighted to welcome Year 4 GCC student Laeni Rees to their classes as a special guest. Laeni was invited to read the book she wrote and illustrated when she was just seven-years-old. The book is called 'Tootie's Trunk Troubles'. As Laeni read her story, the children sat enthralled and were so quiet you could hear a pin drop. After the reading, the Prep students were able to ask questions and suggest ideas to Laeni for more adventures of her main character, Tootie. Glasshouse Christian College is excited to have such a talented young author and illustrator like Laeni to inspire and encourage children even younger than herself. Little Laeni reads the story she wrote, illustrated and published as a seven-year-old to Prep students 36

How comfortable are you?

Nehemiah had a comfortable position. He had a good job as the cup bearer to the king. He lived in a comfortable place inside the fortress of Susa. He had food, security and position. What more could you ask for? But a visit from friends from Jerusalem challenged his comfort zone and changed his life. Nehemiah could no longer live in his comfortable bubble in Susa. God was calling him to go and fix the broken walls of Jerusalem. As I have thought through the book of Nehemiah in the last couple of weeks, I have been challenged to leave my own comfortable bubble that is my life, and look at the broken things around me that need fixing. You don’t have to look to far to see the effects of broken families and broken lives. caring directly onto His people. We are to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, care for the strangers, provide clothes, visit the sick and those in prison. But we cannot do this from our comfortable bubbles we actually have to get out into the world and meet their needs where they are. When Nehemiah found out about the broken walls of Jerusalem he spent three days mourning and fasting and praying. When is the last time that you allowed something to so affect you that you spent three days in prayer for it? Nehemiah knew that the task was greater than he was so he prayed for God to help. I have this very uncomfortable feeling that we are ignoring part of what we are called to do. We are called to find the broken walls and mend them. In the Garden with Brownie

Backyard Stickybeak

The Agapanthus Farm and Clivia Gardens at Mountain View Road, Maleny recently opened their garden as part of the Gardening on the Edge event. I had the pleasure of a lazy wander around the ground. Arriving at the entrance, you’re greeted by an amazing avenue of tall old pine trees planted along one side of the drive, perfectly underplanted with clivias. The other benefit is that the overstorey helps protect them from frosts, which clivias detest. Most clivias are the red or orange form, but here they have many of the less common (and more expensive) yellow flowered clivia. Clivias were named in honour of Lady Charlotte Clive, Duchess of Northumberland, who was the granddaughter of Robert Clive of India. They originate from southern Africa and were first bought to Australia in 1844 to be grown in the Sydney Botanic Gardens. As mentioned above, they prefer a shady position, protected from winter frosts (if you get them) and don’t take too kindly to being overwatered in winter.

The feature is a stunning welcome, and shows that if you have the space and a driveway with some length, planting either a single row or a row on each side of something which has either stunning structure or colour (such as jacaranda) or striking bark (such as some of the pines). Clivias are perfectly suited to this type of situation, being shade tolerant and able to handle the acidic nature of the pine needles. Plus they can handle reduced water availability which can often occur with under-tree planting. The 10 acre portion of an old dairy farm has rich soils, allowing for a variety of productive, landscape and show gardens to be established and maintained.

Mass plantings of agapanthus (naturally) are used as garden and pathway borders, and when in flower would be an absolute stunning display. Massed clivias are cleverly used underneath tall feature plantings, filling the void underneath with permanent green and spring colour when they bloom – although they will throw flowers at any time of the year giving you a nice surprise.

Some clivias were being grown in the open, but the owners had to create a shade barrier using shade cloth to prevent them being scorched. Clivia grows in clumps from stocky rhizomes, which can be lifted and divided every couple of years or can let go to form ever increasing swathes. The flowers do result in fleshy fruits forming (red fruits from red flowers, yellow fruits from yellow flowers), from which the seeds can be collected, sown into a loose mix, kept warm and moist, and propagated. Feed your clivias in spring and summer when they are actively growing – just a standard fertiliser will do, and again after flowering. One other great feature of this garden was the use of open spaces to showcase a vista or view of something not on their property – such as Mount Beerwah in the distance, a grove of autumn deciduous trees next door and even the dairy cows at the back. It is something that other gardeners should do more often. By doing this, you can extend your landscape to include other things you can gain the benefits of and for which you don’t have to look after.

Camellias on show for charity

You’d have to be living under a rock not to notice that it is Camellia flowering time again. These stunning shrubs come is such a vast array of colours, sizes and flower types. The Camellia sasanquas (the autumn camellias) have been flowering for a month or more and will continue into early July. The Camellia japonicas are in bloom too and many are now in full flower. These will continue up until September – by then it is too hot again for camellias to be flowering well. If you’d like to see what you can achieve by growing camellias, you can't go wrong by taking a look at the open garden being held this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) at Curramore, just west of Maleny. Ron and Elaine Ticknell have again opened their acre block of camellia paradise, called Kellyfield Camellias, for the public to enjoy and to raise much-needed money for the ‘Give Me 5 For Kids’ charity, which helps children’s health services on the Sunshine Coast. Last year they raised over $2,500 and so this year Ron and Elaine have been working feverishly to make the gardens bigger, better and more spectacular, looking to top last year's efforts. With hundreds of Camellias on show, it truly is a Garden of Eden for any greenthumb … or just anyone who loves a stickybeak about someone else’s property. There’s an awesome kid's zone, morning and afternoon teas, raffles and displays – all for just a donation upon entry. You can find Kellyfield Camellias at 958 Kidaman Creek Road, Curramore. Drive through Maleny on the Maleny – Kenilworth Road for about 10 kilometres, turn right onto Currramore Road (at the top of the range down to Conondale). Then keep on Curramore Road for about 5 kilometres and Kidaman Creek Road turns off to the right. Although it may seem a trek, it’s a lovely country drive and then you get to spend the day in outstanding garden surrounds. Kellyfield Camellias will open its doors from 9.00am until 4.00pm, Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26. The Tincknells urge you to support their worthy cause, and to come and see the brilliant display of fragrant flowers they have on offer. Just some of the camellia varieties waiting for you to see

Winter rain brings summer to Beerburrum school garden Contributed by Lorelle Fisher The recent rain has brought new life to our school garden. All classes, Prep to Year 6 are helping to deliver fresh produce to the school’s kitchen. This program goal is to inspire young people to experience the link between the garden and the kitchen. This was the vision of Melbourne chef, Stephanie Alexander. We are now planting up for next term; cabbage, kale, beans and peas. It is not unusual to see many happy faces, watering, weeding, tending the chickens and just being in nature. Emma and Abby keeping busy in the garden

Jobs for the yard in June

• It’s your last chance to prune hydrangeas back almost to ground level. Use the cuttings to propagate new plants. • Citrus leaves may develop a yellow colour. This is because the cool soil slows down nutrient uptake through the roots. You can boost them with a foliar spray of a fertiliser with trace elements. • Pinch out the tips of your sweet pea plants to make them bush up and produce more flowers later. • Lift dahlia tubers, brush the soil off and store them in sawdust to prevent them from rotting. Split up old clumps of daylilies. Replant them around the garden or give some to a friend or neighbour. • Mound soil around potatoes already growing, to prevent pest attack and to stop the surface growing potatoes from going green. • Cut the old stems of asparagus down, top-dress them with well-rotted manure or compost and mulch. • Early bindi-eye may start to appear and if so, hand removal is easy or spray with an appropriate herbicide. • Rose planting can be done this month. Plant them in a sunny position in soil enriched by compost and animal manure, and a little bit of rose plant fertiliser will help.

Vegetables

Plant asian greens, asparagus, beans, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, carrot, cauliflower, celery, chilli, cucumber, endive, garlic, kohl rabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsnip, peas, potato, radish, rhubarb, shallots, silver beet, spinach, spring onion, sweet potato, turnip and tomato.

Flowers

Plant alyssum, amaranthus, bedding begonia, boronia, californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, cineraria, cosmos, dianthus, gerbera, gaillardia, gazania, Iceland poppy, kale, lobelia, marigold, pansy, petunia, phlox, portulaca, roses, snapdragon, statice, verbena, viola and zinnia.

Sport Magnificent Sports Day

Horse Riding @ Rossi’s 5494 8515 or 0401 294 241

Contributed by Michelle Lenz The sun was out and shining bright for our annual ‘Sports Day’ event at Mooloolah State School. All students from Prep to Year 6 participated in running events and games. Then the students from Year 3 to Year 6 participated in long jump, high jump, shot put and discus as well. The sportsmanship among the students in their houses was incredible. They wore their colours with pride. The house captains lead the way with fantastic war cries, words of encouragement and cheering for their fellow team mates. All the students pushed themselves all day, whether they were first, second or last.

Run with the Lions

By Lea Parkes With the school holidays just around the corner, now is the time to encourage the school aged members of your household to start their preparations for the Mountain View Challenge organised by the Lions Club of Maleny and the Blackall Range. The Challenge will be held on Sunday, October 16 at the Maleny Showgrounds however the Lions Club wanted to ensure the early notice to allow time for all school runners to prepare. The day features a half marathon and 10,000 metres run for experienced runners as well as a 10km group challenge, a 5km and 3km run and a 3km walk event.

Many students won multiple ribbons and showed their sporting talents. At the end of the day, although it was a close finish, the winning house was Rungert, followed by Westaway and then Maddock. All the teams and students put in a fantastic effort to make it such a successful day. Many of our winners will now go on to the district athletics carnival, which is held in July. Well done to all students, Mooloolah State School staff and the community are very proud of you. We would also like to thank all volunteers on the day, for tuckshop, time keeping, set up and clean up. Age champions for the day were: eight years - William Ward and Bonnie Muller, nine years Jack Petterson and Ella Ward, 10 years - Cooper Douglas and Tahlia Parry, 11 years - Archer Hiser, Cooper Hackney and Tamsyn Douglas and 12 years - Tristan Young and Jade Smith. Overall Champions were: Tristan Young and Tahlia Parry.

There are special events specifically arranged for school-age children, a 5,000 metre run for High School students and 3,000 metre run for Primary School students. Lions member Mike Foale said while this event is an opportunity to raise funds they also want to emphasise that running can contribute to sustained good health, especially if is taken up in childhood and maintained later on. All proceeds raised from the day go to the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. To find out more about the event check out their website www.malenyblackallrange.qld.lions.org.au

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ian Hansen Tuesday’s inclement weather resulted in only six players braving the somewhat unpleasant conditions. The Triples game played resulted in a tie with each team winning one game and both finishing with a score of +11. Most unusual, I must say. The jackpot wasn’t won and there weren’t enough players for a Money Board. Surprisingly, with the weather the way it was, there was a good roll-up for the Twilight Challenge Wednesday evening. The winning Team was the Musketeers. The individual winners decided by a draw of the cards were:Lead - Rob Burton, Second - Cameron Wilson and Skip - Miles Allen. The Touchers went to Kathy Yorkston, David Handley and Jim King and the lucky Money Board winner was Rob Burton to cap off a good night for him. There was also a raffle which went to Beverley Heading. This week because of the all-important State of Origin Match, the Twilight Challenge will be played Tuesday evening. Friday’s Scroungers were well patronised with five Rinks being played. The respective winners were:- David Burgess, Allan Cook, Scott Alexander, Relma Godfrey and Mo Lawrence. The only member present and so able to claim her Sponsors’ Prize win was Jane Burgess who won the Colin Janes Prize. The Money Board winner was that fellow whose name keeps coming up for all sorts of winnings, Joe Walters. Don’t forget the first round of the Singles Championships, both ladies and men are on Saturday, June 25th. Finally a reminder about the Monthly Jackpot Pairs on Monday, June 27.

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Court of law In a trial, a small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, "Mrs Jones, do you know me?" She responded, "why, yes, I do know you, Mr Williams. I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. "You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. "You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realise you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you," she said. The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs

Jones, do you know the defense attorney?" She again replied, "why yes, I do. I've known Mr Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, racist, and he has a drinking problem. "He can't build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in Queensland. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him," she said. The defense attorney nearly died. The judge asked both gentlemen to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said, "If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you both to jail." Hugh Jones, Beerwah

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 22/06/2016

CANCER June 22 – July 22 Final touches are needed to wrap up your work, health or pet concern. Be decisive, not defensive, when you do act. Abundantly expansive Jupiter and Pluto, in good aspect, is followed by a dreamy Venus/Neptune aspect. This brings a rich influence on your life and your immediate world could move smoothly now. LEO July 23 – August 22 The stars are fired up at the end of this month as they make their move with Mars going direct in Scorpio. This has been retrograde since April. So you are now fired up with feelings that have been stewing, and brooding and drive you to move forward to get to the depth of matters. Check plans for solid financial ground. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Take advantage of good support and affection at the end of this month. Do not give in to negative thinking or another person’s down cast mood. Forget emotional aggravations, shoot for the Moon! The Aries Moon pushes you to get what you want. With Mercury and Mars going direct, you are ready to tackle practical skills. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Take advantage of all opportunities outside your normal comfort zone and work with people who are progressive, artistic and community minded. This week is excellent for experimenting with your own progressive, creative side. With an aspect between Venus and Pluto as Mars goes direct in Scorpio, maximise your assets.

PISCES February 20 – March 20 By June 26 the Moon is in your sign over the whole weekend and by Monday a relationship can bring major support, influence and improvement. Always look for the bright side if others try to drag you down. With the end of the month bringing Mars forward again in direct motion, you recharge all your passions and drive. ARIES March 21 – April 20 So for this week there is a very special blessing of calm and serenity under good aspects between Venus and Neptune. Venus completes her cycle at the end of this month, however, then in opposition to Pluto, there is an intense risk from someone you are closely involved with in your private, or professional world. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 You may be still looking for a solution or innovative resolution by month’s end. The answer will come if you think out of the box. Mars will move from retrograde to direct forward motion in the sign of intense Scorpio. This will be the mover and shaker in your relationship world activating developments from last April. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Look out for the sparkle from exciting Uranus in great aspect to the planets Venus and Mercury. Even the Sun in its sign gives you a chance to do things differently and make creative changes. This is the week to believe in those who are inventive, progressive and offer innovative new ways to do successfully do things.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You have big power days at month’s end. From June 26 to 30, Jupiter will empower your efforts with success and Mars, moving direct, work with Pluto to offer you abundant opportunity, reward and influence. With Mars moving forward again, the month closes out with ease, efficiency and energy, which you need now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 You probably have been feeling that Mars retrograde since last April, that may have found you drawing an inward self-reflecting cocoon around you. You will feel so grateful as Mars again moves forward from June 29 that will loosen the ‘stuck’ inner feelings as you prepare for a new cycle. Soon to expand your income! CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Generally speaking the Sagittarius energy of the last full Moon says to tie up loose ends from unfinished business to free you for the coming new cycle. Now that Uranus is in good aspect to Venus and Mercury, find new technical solutions for launching a pioneer plan. Then ride on the powerful Jupiter / Pluto aspect. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Uranus, your ruling planet, makes wonderful aspects to Venus and Mercury. Venus will be in charge of your best values and Mercury will sign the best contracts, allowing you to be free and authentic. Even expressing all the weird, wild progressive parts of you! Since April progress was sluggish, but now all brakes are off.
