Hi Everyone...

Well I have to admit that even though I would have liked to head down to Brissie last week and go along to the Ekka, I didn’t make it. But I know that lots of locals not only attended but were actively involved in the show. We have already had one tip off about one talented lady who has taken out awards for her smocking work. We are hoping this week to hear from some others who love being involved in the Ekka each year. If you have a story or a photo to share, then make sure you send us an email at editorial@gcnews. com.au. While I am a little disappointed that I didn’t head along to one of my favourite ‘childhood’ annual events, I can guarantee that I will be at Beerwah’s Charity Sports Day at the Beerwah Sportsgrounds this Saturday. While I can only lay claim to attending the last 13 of these events, (yes even in the year that it was hammering down with rain), I know that there are many other locals who have made it along to every year since 1971! It is a great family event. All of the funds raised on the day go to the Queensland Cancer Council. I hope to see you there. Regards,

27 Sunday A play-reading evening will be held at the Maleny Players Playhouse at the Showgrounds. The players will be reading the classic comedy ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’. Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Cover Story Hotly contested competitions Want to see who Queensland’s Strongest Man and Woman are? Well you can check out their championships at Beerwah Sportsgrounds this Saturday – it’s all part of the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival. The competition will start at 10am with competitors lifting, running, and pulling for several hours to gain points for Queensland’s strongest man and strongest woman title. And this year, for the first time, is the challenge for a man to lift a car. Last week GC&M News’ Greg Brown headed over to the Muscle Hut at Kawana (where the local strongmen and women train) to get a photo of one of this year’s competitors getting some last minute practice in with the car lift. With the car weighing in at around 400kgs, the time Greg had to take the photo was quite fast – it was not a pose that strongman Lee Adams could hold for long.

On the big day you can expect to see plenty of competition – not just from the strongmen and women, but there will also be the battle of the gleaming vehicles in the ‘Show and Shine’ event, vintage motorbikes, magnificent photos in the Photography Competition, and the Super Strawberry winners will be on display. The ring events start at 8.30am and continue throughout the day, interspersed with the thrill of Shetland harness racing, the Glasshouse Country Dog Jump and novelty athletics for children. For complete list of events and entertainment on the day see ad and story on page 21.

Local solar expert Ian Hall (well known as the previous owner of the Glass House solar business All Energy HQ) alerted us to an imminent change in legislation which he thought we should bring to the attention of readers. According to Ian, state legislation is about to be changed to take away the $0.44 per kWh feed in tariff (solar bonus scheme or SBS) in some circumstances. The Public Works and Utilities Committee has finalised a report on the Electricity and Other Legislation (Batteries and Premium Feed-in Tariff) Amendment Bill 2017. The report states that no community consultation was deemed necessary “due to the community sensitivities to the SBS and potential for the costs of the SBS to increase if SBS customers rush to take up new technology in the face of an impending restriction. The Government determined that an increase in SBS costs represented an unacceptable risk which outweighed the need for broad consultation.” The core change will be that if you increase the size of your generation capacity to more than what your inverter is approved for (the ‘rated output’), you will automatically lose your $0.44 feed in tariff. Many panels actually produce more electricity than they are labelled at, some up to 130% of the labelled output. And many inverters are rated by the manufacturer at less than what the total of the rooftop panels can produce (e.g. a 5kW system may have a 4.6kW inverter).

In most circumstances, you will also not be able to set up a battery storage or install any other forms of extra electricity generation (such as wind) without being stripped of your $0.44 tariff. This means that homeowners can only: • install an additional generator which only supplies the home or business at night, or during a blackout; • install a battery which only supplies the home or business at night, or during a blackout; and • install an additional generator which supplies a separate structure which is not connected to the part of the home or business which is also supplied by the qualifying generator (e.g. a shed). Anything else will lose your $0.44 tariff. Not only has the community been denied consultation opportunities, the legislation will be retrospective back to June 15, meaning that people will be penalised for legally making changes since that date, even though the legislation has yet to be approved. This could affect people who have had to make changes and repairs due to recent storm damage. The committee also made a recommendation to end the solar benefit scheme earlier than the 2028 timeframe, but the government reinforced in the report its commitment to maintaining the $0.44 feed in tariff until June 30, 2018.

Have your say on three local developments Over the next few weeks, locals have three opportunities to comment on development proposals previously reported on in GC&M News. Public submissions are open on the proposal to start a new quarry in Landsborough. The Material Change of Use application (MCU16/0289) relates to a parcel of land known as Alf’s Hill (or Alf’s Mountain), situated between Hapgood Road and the Bruce Highway. The site can be seen from the Bruce Highway as the large forested hill on the western side, about two kilometres north of the Bells Creek interchange. Surrounded by State Forest and National Park, the 64 hectare parcel of land is owned by civil construction company Shadforths and is currently zoned as rural land. The development application identifies approximately 6,420,000 cubic metres of total extractable material which would be suitable for the planned Bruce Highway upgrade works and for the residential and associated developments at Harmony (Palmview) and Aura (Caloundra South). Operations would include some rock blasting as well as crushing and screening of material onsite. Plans submitted with the application show that the haulage route would traverse some internal forestry roads, onto Hapgood Road, then via Forestry Road and Dianella Road to join onto the Bruce Highway at the new Bells Creek interchange.

It appears that approximately 100 truck movements a day are planned. The block sits within the region identified as the future Beerwah East development area and adjacent to the planned CAMCOS transport corridor. Submissions for and against a proposed new service station on Frizzo Road, Palmview are likely to create some discussion. Submissions close September 29. The Material Change of Use application (MCU17/0042) for 141 Frizzo Road, which is just to the north of the Aussie World complex and only 500m from the existing Aussie World Garage, aims to change the current rural zoning use to allow for the construction of a service centre – incorporating a petrol station and fast food outlet with a drive-through. The 1.2 hectare site will front what will become the western service road between Steve Irwin Way and Sippy Downs, but will not have direct highway access. No information has been given as to which service station and fast food companies will be operating from the site. Steve Amos, owner of Aussie World Garage, is understandably cautious of the news. “I am aware of the application submitted to Council,” he said. “And I’ll be carefully assessing the implications for the local area, our business and our customers before taking any further action.”

Submissions close September 1. Public submissions are also open for the proposed 60 lot housing estate on Kings Road at Mooloolah (REC17/0093). The almost eight hectare parcel of land at 138 Kings Road is zoned as low density residential and so the development fits within what council has determined as appropriate for the site. The subdivision will create 58 new house lots plus two reserves to be handed over to council. The planning documents estimate that the completed development will see an extra 200 people living within walking distance to Mooloolah town centre. Submissions close September 7.

Battlelines still drawn on Halls Creek After years in the making, the South East Queensland Regional Plan has been released by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, Jackie Trad. Projecting over a 50 year timeframe, Ms Trad described the plan as setting out a blueprint for the region – for sustainable growth, global competitiveness and high-quality living. “This new plan shapes the way we will grow, prosper, connect, sustain and live, as the region grows to around 5.3 million people over the next 25 years,” Ms Trad said. “This growth will require approximately 950,000 new jobs and an almost 800,000 new dwellings across SEQ by 2041.” Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson congratulated the Deputy Premier and her department for the collaborative approach they have taken, but made it clear that it is vital the Sunshine Coast becomes a focus for critically needed transport infrastructure. “It is now up to the State Government to play its role and commit to essential public transport improvements on the Sunshine Coast,” Mayor Jamieson said. “What the new Regional Plan highlights is that the Sunshine Coast will need to accommodate nearly 200,000 more people through to 2041 and that there is critical, region-shaping infrastructure, like public transport services between Maroochydore to Caloundra to Beerwah

and upgrades to the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail corridor – that must be a priority.” Against the determined stance of community and the council, the controversial Halls Creek proposed development remains on the cards, with the government leaving the massive residential area on the shores of Pumicestone Passage in the pipeline, identifying the area as a potential urban growth area after 2041. Mayor Jamieson said that council remained vehemently opposed to the identification of Halls Creek, south of Aura (Caloundra South), as a Potential Future Growth Area. “We have clearly demonstrated that Halls Creek is not suitable to accommodate urban growth – now or in the future – and we will remain opposed to its development,” he said. “Following strong and consistent advocacy by council, the Regional Plan moves the site known as Beerwah East into the Urban Footprint – our preferred location for long-term growth. “Beerwah East has long been identified by council as its preferred new growth front and will provide key public transport connections and routes and an additional 20,000 dwellings that will help to meet the predicted population growth to 2041 and beyond.” During the plan’s inception, the local group Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) and the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) organised a compelling campaign

Community divided over quarry

against reducing the green space corridor (or inter-urban break) between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast – including rejecting the Halls Creek development proposal. GMAN this week reiterated the reasons for their strong stance. “We opposed the Halls Creek development due to a number of factors,” said a GMAN spokesperson. These factors included protection of environmental and ecological values of Pumicestone Passage; protection of the inter-urban break; to protect and provide certainty to current rural, agricultural and forestry industries in the region; and that the area lacks public transport, which would lead to a heavy reliance on private transport and ultimately meaning more cars on local roads. Community interest in the Beerburrum Quarry material change of use development application has gained momentum and the Beerburrum Action Group has held two public meetings recently. While Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has been unable to attend the forums due to parliamentary responsibilities, he did hold a mobile office in Beerburrum last Wednesday to meet with concerned residents. Andrew reassured residents that, although the application is being managed by Sunshine Coast Council, he has written to the Minister for Main Roads to ensure their concerns are thoroughly considered. He also wanted to ensure that residents are aware that the Barra Group won a State Government tender process to use the stateowned resources at this site and as such there are statutory processes that must be adhered to. He also said that petitions to the State Parliament of 10,000 plus signatures only allow an opportunity for a debate in parliament; the outcome of that debate is not binding and it certainly does not get the application to be refused. “Cr Baberowski has publicly communicated that he is welcoming all ongoing input from the community even though the formal consultation process has closed, and that the focus for residents should be on the council decision and possible conditions around traffic, waste and noise impacts if the application is given approval,” Andrew said.

Update with Ursula Starkovsky Chamber President

ANZ services available in Maleny

Last Friday saw Cr Jenny McKay officially open the ANZ Mobile Lending shopfront at 3/66 Maple Street, at the Banksia House complex. Jaques Fayolle, who has been operating his ANZ mobile lending service office in the Hinterland since 2004, decided that following the decision by ANZ to close the Maleny branch down, it would be the right time for him to buy a commercial premises and open an office in Maleny. Jaques explained that while they won’t be able to offer cash transactions, they will be able to provide all lending facilities including personal loans, car loans, home loans, investment loans, and leasing, and facilitate with insurance and financial planning. They will also be able to assist with some back office functions like bank statements, internet banking, and credit card applications. The office will be open five days a week from 9am to 4pm and, as they also offer the mobile service, they can visit clients in the area 24/7. Jaques has employed ex ANZ Maleny Branch Manager Darryl Edmonds to run the office. Darryl has been managing the Maleny ANZ branch for over 18 months and he is well known in the local community.

This year’s AGM was held at the Beerwah Hotel last Tuesday and, with the help and great guidance by Cr Rick Baberowski, a new Executive was elected: President Ursula Starkovsky from First National Real Estate, Vice President Vicki Heading from Beerwah Hair & Beauty, and Treasurer Sue Schlapa from Pasta d’Vine were all re-elected and new to the roles are Secretary Debbie Neilson from A1 Auto Parts and, in PR/ Marketing, Tracie Sanim from Splash Marketing & PR. It was time to say good bye to Libby Brown, our Honorary Secretary for a number of years. Without Libby’s engagement with the government’s Grants Program there would not be any CCTVs in the railway towns. Nobody else in the executive could have contributed so much time and effort to this project. Thank you, Libby, for all your input. It was a lively meeting with a lot of discussions from the floor and quite a number of suggestions and proposals which the Executive will investigate and report on in the next few weeks or months. Tourism is finally on relevant people’s minds with Visit Sunshine Coast taking a liking to our mountains and Sunshine Coast Council investigating a new project called The 7 Peak Heritage Walking Trails. The Chamber is involved in all these new projects and we will keep you posted as things develop. I say it over and over again, only a strong membership base will be able to lobby Council, State and Federal Governments on issues that are relevant to our area. We need all businesses to be part of the Chamber!

the competition, all you have to do is make sure you register by October 10 at www. celebrateglasshousecountry.com.au/join-us. Then select from the list which Elvis song you want to sing (or even mime), put on your Blue Suede Shoes and turn up at the Street Party and strut your stuff. The competition and judging will be held at 7pm on the Main Entertainment Stage in the Tower Green, Simpson Street, Beerwah. The good news is that there is still plenty of time to get some practice in, or to encourage someone else you know to give it a crack.

Designing Functional Landscapes

Whether you decide to have an edible garden or mixed flower beds, position is key to the plants survival. Delicate herbs and other greens only need 6 full hours of sunlight each day, so plant a nice open shady tree on the western side of your garden which should be where you pass daily. Even better would be if that tree can shade any western facing windows and have a passion fruit vine growing on it! - Raised garden beds will always benefit plants when planted on contour to capture as much water as possible, the “No Dig Garden” is so easy to construct and will suppress weeds and grass at the same time. Rehabilitation works costing $3.5 million are about to start on Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough. Department of Transport and Main Roads North Coast District Director Leah McKenzie said the work would be undertaken on a 2.3km section of road between Mellum Creek and Ewen Maddock Dam starting late August. “The project will involve the removal of the existing road surface, complete asphalt resurfacing and line marking,” Ms McKenzie said. “We expect to take around eight weeks to complete the project, weather permitting, and the result will provide an improved road surface and smoother driving conditions for motorists.” Ms McKenzie said the resurfacing of the road will be completed at night to ensure the least amount of disruption. “Works will occur between the hours of 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday, weather permitting,” she said. “Motorists may experience some minor delays during the works; however, traffic controllers, reduced speed limits and signage will be in place. “We thank everyone for their patience and remind motorists to allow for the changed conditions to ensure safety through the worksite.” For more information, call the department’s North Coast District Office on 5451 7055.

Exploring excellence in engagement Step up to one of Sunshine Coast Council’s roving photo booths throughout August and September and have your say on what an engaged community means to you and take home a free photograph as a keepsake. The Exploring Excellence in Engagement pop-up photo booths will be in Maleny outside the Community Centre in Maple Street on Friday September 1 from 10am - noon, and at the Beerwah Library on Tuesday September 5 from 10am - noon to help inform the future of council’s community engagement approach. Mayor Mark Jamieson invited the Sunshine Coast community to share their thoughts and complete a short online survey on council’s website by Tuesday September 26. He said his view of an engaged community was one where it is second nature for people to connect with each other and what is happening around them. “An engaged community recognises opportunity, takes responsibility for securing it and works together to confront challenges,” Mayor Jamieson said.

Boomerang Bags back in style With community awareness growing about the unnecessary use of plastic shopping bags, the profile of the grassroots inspired ‘Boomerang Bag’ community movement is rapidly gaining momentum. Around the Sunshine Coast a number of groups have popped up to create and distribute these reusable bags and, locally, groups have started this year at Glass House Mountains and Beerwah. With tag lines of ‘Bought to Support' and 'Borrow and Reuse’, the bags are put together by volunteers using donated materials with the idea that the eco friendly bags can be purchased for a small amount and reused. Christine McMahon, coordinator of the Glass House Mountains group, estimates that since kicking off in May they have made over 200 bags. “Interest is definitely picking up about the bags and they are almost starting to get a bit of a ‘cult status’, with people keen to show their support for their community and environment by purchasing the bags,” said Christine. The group meets every second Tuesday at the Neighbourhood Centre and currently their bags can be purchased at the Glass House Mountains Good Start Early Learning Centre and the Fruit Shed on Steve Irwin Way. Another active local group has sprung up at Beerwah with monthly ‘sewing bees’ gaining in popularity, not only supporting a great cause but providing a fun social opportunity for all family members to also get involved. The Boomerang Bags Beerwah group started in February this year and holds monthly ‘sewing bees’. These social gatherings are held at members’ homes as well as Glasshouse Views Retirement Village and include a wide range of interested people who enjoy sharing a meal, sewing, screen printing and making

handmade items. Everyone is welcome, from young mums (and babies) to older ladies. The group sells their bags under the ‘bought to support logo’ for $1 at Mrs Brown’s Espresso, Beerwah Kindy and The Healthy Guru. Courtney Flint from Between four to Mrs Brown’s Expresso ten volunteers and Bar with one of the attend the Boomerang Bags sewing bees and group organiser Amy Hand encourages interested people to join their Facebook page to find out more. “We haven't gotten a big enough supply for the ‘borrow and reuse’ bags yet, so we decided to make the ‘bought to support’ ones really affordable so if you forget your green bags you can easily just buy one.” Money from sales goes towards buying threads and scissors and servicing machines, and the group has had lots of support from people making donations, especially old pillow cases and doonas, and they enjoy being able to recycle fabrics. “We always need more volunteers and we're really happy to teach people to sew or help smaller groups who want to start up or join us,” says Amy. Both groups will be holding a stall at the Celebrate Glasshouse Country event on October 20. To find out more head to www.boomerangbags.org, or visit Boomerang Bags Beerwah on Facebook.

what’s New... Mooloolah Skate Park Heeding the community call for more family friendly facilities at Mooloolah, and after months of negotiation and planning, the Mooloolah Skate Park is now up and ready for local kids to enjoy. Located next to the Mooloolah Recreation Grounds (near Way Street, Mooloolah) the specially created skate ramp has been designed to suit children 12 years and under. The new skate park has already enjoyed heaps of interest and the official grand opening event will be held from 10am on Saturday September 23.

Skate and BMX Plan 2011-2021 Skaters, BMXers and scooter riders across the Coast will also be ‘stoked’ after last week’s Sunshine Coast Council’s general meeting, where they endorsed an updated Sunshine Coast Skate and BMX Plan 2011-2021 which guides the size, features, style and location of each facility across the entire region. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said our skate and BMX facilities play a significant role in our region’s community infrastructure. “The plan is an important document as it provides a facility condition audit report, a benchmarking analysis and a range of recommendations for our regional skate and BMX network for the next five years.”

School News Jungle Book comes to Glenview

Students from Glenview State School have been hard at work rehearsing for their production of the Rudyard Kipling favourite, 'The Jungle Book', to be performed on Wednesday September 13 at 1.30pm and Thursday September 14 at 7pm. With a student population of a little over 200, more than a quarter of all students are involved in the cast and crew. The lead characters, the chorus-line, the stage and lighting, are all beautifully commanded by Charlotte Grey – Baloo the Year 3 to 6 students. the Bear Chelsea Harry, Glenview's music teacher, is proud of the standard they are producing. "They are an exuberant bunch of kids who blow me away with their confidence," she said. "Many of the school students are also involved in the choirs and bands, so understandably the standard is high." Shows are open to the public, and the matinee performance is well suited to mums with little ones, and senior citizens. There is easy access to the school via the After School Care pathway, at 6 Leeding Road, Glenview. Tickets, which include a free drink, are $15 for adults and $10 for children (0 - 2yr olds are free - but are not allocated a seat). Firies a big hit with kindy kids

Annabelle and her dad, Firie Luke

Louis and Firie Mike squirting the hose

There was much excitement at Beerwah Kindy as Fire Officers Luke, Duncan, Ash and Mike arrived to speak to the children about fire safety at kindy and at home. Beerwah Kindy teacher and co-director Katie Piva said the visits were extra special because Annabelle’s dad Luke is the Captain of Beerwah Fire Brigade. Annabelle was very proud and excited to have her dad at kindy to talk to the children. Fire Officer Ash is a past ‘Beerwah Kindy Kid’, as were both of Mike’s now adult children. The fire officers led a conversation about fire safety, and chose volunteers to demonstrate ‘stop, drop and roll’ and crawling to an exit in the case of fire. The children performed a fire drill, then it was off to the park to squirt water from the fire hose. After a big thank you clap, the firies drove off with sirens blaring. It was a great morning. It makes our annual visits even more wonderful to have some of our present and past kindy families represent this very important community service.

This short program is to get seniors started on the road to good health or help keep them on track to a positive ageing experience. “Some of the most important topics we'll look at include removing heavy metals and toxins that could be clogging up your system and weighing you down; How excessive inflammation causes havoc in so many ways and how you can reduce it; Clearing brain fog, increasing alertness and concentration – and of course we all want to guard against Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and; Stiffness, arthritis and pain can take the smile off your face, so let's learn how to move with ease

Living - Arts Local ceramicists work on show Maleny Art Direct will be hosting an exhibition, ‘Series of Afterthoughts’, featuring the work of local ceramicists Lindsay Muir and Mel Lumb which opens on Saturday September 2. Many people will know of Lindsay Muir’s work, stylized representations Lindsay Muir's of Australia’s flora and 'Holy Pot' fauna as well as beautiful landscape pots. This exhibition will be very refreshing, exciting and unexpected, but with all the style and amazing craftsmanship normally associated with his work. Lindsay said this series of work is a collective of inspirations which have come to fruition in the form of ceramic pots and sculptures. Maleny Arts Direct is located at 2/30 Maple Street, Maleny (next door to Rosetta Books).

Creative excellence on show A stunning collection of visual art by secondary school students from across the North Coast education region will open at USC Art Gallery on Thursday night. The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art: Regional Exhibition 2017 is part of a state-wide program that recognises and promotes excellence in senior visual arts education and student achievement throughout all Queensland high schools. Maddy Lapham and Erin Hatcher from Beerwah State High School, along with Ouardia Belkessam and Lily Whitaker from Maleny State High School, will have their work featured as part of the exhibition. USC Art Gallery Manager Megan Williams said it would be the first time that many of the young artists see their work presented in a professional art gallery environment. “It is exciting to be able to play a part in the development of young artists’ careers and we hope that being a part of this exhibition is just the beginning for them,” she said. USC Art Gallery is located at the USC campus at Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs. It is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.

things to do

Spicing up the Arts As part of the upcoming Horizon Festival, Spicers Tamarind Retreat will host an interactive dinner with some of the area’s most well-known artists from 6.30pm on September 2. The event is being done in conjunction with our local Arts Connect Inc, with the goal of giving guests an insight into what drives the panel of artists and what inspires them to create their individual works. The panel is made up of a range of creative talents including visual artist Jandamarra Cadd, author Steven Lang, photographer Steve Parish, musician Kerry Jacobsen and the President of the Creative Alliance Sunshine Coast, Phil Smith. Guests will enjoy a delicious Asian banquet prepared by Tamarind Head Chef Dan Jarrett, with wines matched to each course. Tickets are priced at $120 and must be purchased by September 1 and can be booked via the Horizon Festival website at http://horizonfestival.com.au. A donation from each ticket purchased will be given to Arts Connect. Spicers Tamarind have worked closely with Arts Connect Inc over the past seven years, hosting their annual Sculptures on the Edge which has evolved into one of the Sunshine Coast’s not to be missed art events. Set amongst the stunning rainforest adjacent to Gardners Falls at Spicers Tamarind Retreat in Maleny, the event allows guests to wander the tranquil grounds whilst admiring the sculptures. Spicers Tamarind Retreat is located at 88 Obi Lane South, Maleny.

It time again for the Beerwah Charity Sports and what a line-up there will be with activity and entertainment all day long. The ring events start at 8.30am and continue throughout the day, interspersed with the thrill of Shetland harness racing, the Glasshouse Country Dog Jump and novelty athletics for children. A collection of the scarecrow entries from around the district will be brought to the sportsground for the day. For the young ones there’s the thrill of the jumping castle, face-painting, Hoola Hoops and Andino the Magician. Sid the Seagull will be handing out free sample bags, and a crew from Australia Zoo will add to the fun and games. And of course, you can cuddle and pet the animals in the Party Ponies’ Animal Nursery or spot the Maleny Birdworld Roaming Macaw, check out the winners of the colouring competition, watch the balloon artist create fantastic shapes and then join in the fancy dress events. There’s great value to be had with top quality local produce of all kinds. The LNP ladies’ group hosts the home-made cakes and biscuits stall. Jan Cheal has local fruit and veges along with jams, chutneys and totally scrumptious strawberry pavlovas. The Anglican Church group’s stall will have an amazing collection of garden plants and seedlings. The Maleny Light Horse will lead off the grand parade, followed by historic motor bikes at 1pm and musical entertainment will continue throughout the day courtesy of the Maleny Country Music & Ukulele Group plus the Morris Dancers. There is also the $1,000 Talent Search from 1 to 3pm – watch and cheer along your favourite entrants as they show off their skills. You Said It Land development in Landsborough

I’m one of many Landsborough locals concerned about small acreages of land in Landsborough township being re-developed with town houses, units or duplexes; each placed on very small blocks of land. These particular pieces of land were first totally cleared, with mature trees on boundaries being unnecessarily sacrificed to the bulldozer. Buckley Street, adjacent to the bat colony (Myla Road) is one prominent example, and the other current development is on Myla Road (opposite Vidler Court). It now appears that a block of land near the roundabout on Landsborough-Maleny Road, Landsborough, has been sold to a developer with approximately 23 town-houses planned. This acre currently has a large stately home nestled amongst a beautifully landscaped mature garden – one of the few attractive dwellings left in the immediate township. Is this too, to be bulldozed to bare dirt, with ugly clusters of units jammed up against each other replacing it? Are council’s pride and historical connections now irrelevant? Is Landsborough targeted because it is a railway town? Where is the consideration for permanent, long-time locals? Are we to be totally disregarded in the race for monetary gains by those few, who will never live here? It would be interesting to know what council’s policy is regarding the percentage-quota of townhouses/ units/duplexes allowable for Landsborough township? It would appear that our lovely little town could quickly regress to a potential slum area (a situation I personally witnessed in another small township in Queensland). J Fleming Landsborough

Politician’s picture

What is it with the proliferation of these billboards of Andrew Powell? At first there was just one or two, but now they’ve begun to multiply. At least a dozen of them are dotted along the edge of major roads in the district, despoiling the view. Could it be that our local MLA, having squandered his margin during his tenure as a cabinet minister under Campbell Newman (falling from 23% to 1.6%), is trying to distract us from the fact that his once safe seat is now anything but? If this is the case might I suggest that there are probably better ways to attract votes than plastering one’s face all over the electorate? He could, for example, focus his energy on standing up for all those he represents, rather than just sectional interests. He could direct his efforts into redressing

the incredible deficit in infrastructure suffered by the Sunshine Coast over the last few decades. As the present Shadow Minister for Transport and Other Things he could be presenting a clear, transparent and time-specific policy for delivering a rail line from Brisbane to the proposed 500,000 residents of the Sunshine Coast. As a former Minister for the Environment in Queensland he might, also, speak out in support of farmers and other concerned citizens against the rapaciousness of the resources industry (local and international) in this state. History is littered with the stories of politicians who have felt it necessary to erect large pictures of themselves wherever they can. For the most part these are not happy tales. Perhaps Mr Powell could consider whether or not he wants to be associated with such luminaries as Kim Jong-un. Steven Lang Maleny

Re: Waste tax

In response to comments made by the Labor candidate for Glass House regarding illegal waste dumping, as Minister for the Environment in 2012 I removed the Bligh Labor Government's Waste Tax. It was an extra burden on businesses and households across Glass House, the Sunshine Coast and Queensland. But, no matter how Labor tries to spin that decision, it is not why we are seeing the dumping of NSW waste in Queensland. The existence of cross border transfer of waste existed before, during and after the Bligh Labor Government’s waste tax. Queensland’s waste levy was substantially lower than that in NSW and therefore the cross border transfer of waste was extensive during its existence. The problem we see occurring in Queensland wouldn’t exist if NSW didn’t have a waste levy or, at the very least, enforced its own “proximity rules”. The candidate for Glass House himself acknowledged that the proximity rules were not being enforced by the NSW Government and could not answer how Premier Palaszczuk was going to address this issue. The answer is not to bring back Labor’s waste tax to slug Glass House and Sunshine Coast small businesses and households. Annastacia Palaszczuk must categorically rule out reintroducing Labor’s waste tax in the next term of government. The LNP made sensible changes to environmental laws – changes that saw better monitoring and

Long overdue infrastructure

Steve Irwin Way, being the alternate route for the Bruce Highway, as well as one of the main thoroughfares through the Hinterland, was receiving as many as 10,000 cars a day back when last studied more than two years ago. When inclement weather or traffic incidents lead to drivers diverting via Steve Irwin Way, locals are well aware of the lengthy, dangerous congestion that leads to significant delays. These delays are not just for those using it as a diversion, but for local workers and families who need to access the road for their day to day activities. My normal 5-6 minute drive into Beerwah has been known to take 45 minutes during congestion – and Steve Irwin Way is my only alternative. There is no way around it for me, just as there is no way around it for many others throughout Beerwah, Landsborough and Glass House. This is a common-sense upgrade that needs to be done as soon as possible. With the widening of the Bruce Highway being continually stalled and then dealt with only in bits and pieces – together with the growth of Hinterland tourism, Australia Zoo, and the development of the new waterpark – Steve Irwin Way is only getting busier and more congested. There are also frequent accidents at the intersection of Steve Irwin Way and Beerburrum Road at Beerburrum, and frequent problems at turning points along the way. RACQ nominated Steve Irwin Way's upgrade to fourlanes as part of its Motoring Matters policy released ahead of the 2015 State Election. The Australian Workers Party will push for this much needed, and long overdue infrastructure – and as it is a state road, we will also be insisting on the use of local workers wherever possible. These challenges led her to start working as a clerk in Melbourne when she was only 14 in order to support her family (being the eldest of eight children). At the age of 18, she moved to Penola in South Australia to work as a governess. It was here that she noticed that there were a lot of people struggling to educate their children because they were poor. With the help of Fr Julian Woods (who had become her spiritual director), she and her sisters starting the St Joseph’s School in a stable in Penola. This eventually led to the formation of an order; the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. It was an order that focused on giving sound education to children across the country (particularly the poor). Mary saw a need and did something about it. We can all do the same. No matter how little. She encountered challenges along the way, even from within the church but never gave up. May we all be inspired by her as we strive to make the world a better place.

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop On August 8 every year, the Catholic Church across the world honours and celebrates this great Australian. This is a big celebration for us here in Australia particularly because St Mary is the first and only canonized Australian saint for now. Mary was canonized a saint on October 17, 2010. When saints are canonized in the Catholic Church, it is a way of recognizing the ways in which the person contributed to making the world a better place. This does not in any way mean that the ones we canonize are the only saints there are. Saints are ordinary people who through their lives did extraordinary things thereby inspiring others to be the best people they can be. St Mary of the Cross MacKillop was born in Fitzroy, Victoria to Catholic Scottish Immigrants (Alexander and Flora Mackillop). She really had very humble and often troubled beginnings. They were just a normal family with the normal challenges of everyday life.

Club Glass House - 2017 Charity Fishing Comp With a record 186 entrants enjoying absolutely perfect weather, this years’ Club Glass House Charity Fishing Competition was arguably the best one yet for both fundraising and community involvement.

Karen Andrews (right) from HQ Energy presenting a prize to Jim from Berrells' Electrical

After months of tireless coordination, event organiser Sharon Bochow is stoked that the competition was such a huge success and she is deeply appreciative to all those involved who contributed to making the 2017 competition one of the most enjoyable ever. “It was just a great day and the best we’ve ever had! The weather was fabulous and we were packed to capacity – all in all it was a fantastic community event with an incredible amount of local support,” said Sharon. Raising over $4,500 to help support children through the Sunshine Coast Hospital Charity Wishlist, Sharon is keen to acknowledge the amazing support from local sponsors that help make this event a regular annual drawcard on the fishing community calendar with entrants coming in from Gympie all the way to the Gold Coast. Now in its 16th year, the competition has also enjoyed increasing participation from local families with a record number of kids entering this year.

Most of the major sponsors have generously supported the event right from the beginning, and this year the competition had over $8,000 worth of cash and prizes. Every year, Cliff and Pam Andreassen have donated the highly anticipated first prize – a week’s accommodation on Fraser Island's Indian Head and their ongoing support has been an incredible asset to the competition.

Sugar Cane Mulch

Contributed by Sheila Williams Recently Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch along with the community was privileged to be invited to see the Indigenous Bush Walk and Bush Tucker Track at Peachester State School. We were shown around by Dorothy Robb (who received the Good Neighbour Award for February 2017, for her work on this project). The Gubbi Gubbi people have advised on the appropriate native flora to plant. We were amazed by the many vines that have been planted to attract native butterflies. All of us had heard of the efforts to save the Richmond Birdwing butterfly by planting appropriate vines, but I don't think any of us had realised just how many butterflies there are in Australia, and how diverse are their food requirements. The Bush Tucker Track has many of the food plants that are now beginning to find favour in Australian restaurants, and, a bit away from the walk, there is a small vegetable garden and chook pen. After our walk we were served afternoon tea in one of the circles of tree stumps which serve as seats for use as outdoor classrooms. The refreshments included biscuits, some of which included ingredients from the bush tucker trees.

Home Garden ideas to inspire

& Backyard

Sometimes viewing a beautifully designed garden can help inspire your own backyard creativity, so if you could do with some inspiration you should head along and see Chris and Angel O’Dempsey’s award-winning garden at ‘Orchid Grove’ at Buderim when it is open from Saturday September 9 through to Monday September 11. The couple originally chose the home site because of the northeast aspect and the existing eucalypt and casuarina trees, which gave protection from the westerly winds without

inhibiting the sun’s reach to most of the garden. The initial site work included rock and timber retaining, plus planting of natives along the fence. Chris said, “We took care to take account of the natural lay of the land, the surrounding native vegetation and the aspect when coming up with a design. We wanted a walk through our garden to feel like a walk through the bush or a rainforest.” During the first few years, extra trees, ferns and shrubs were planted to supplement and complement the existing growth. While primarily natives were chosen, some exotics were added for colour or variety. “Because it’s as close as we could get to a natural setting, our orchids have been established in a natural style, on logs, rocks and trees, which shows them off so much better than confining them all to pots,” Chris said. Ponds were created, and recently a waterfall and a creek flowing into another pond have been added. The introduction of undercover foliage and ground specimens is an ongoing process, as is the addition of orchids and native ferns, which are initially secured on trees, logs and rocks and in shaded or protected areas. Bromeliads have become a feature where orchids have not thrived and over the years, plants have been moved to suit their needs. Oncidiums, vandas and cattleyas provide flowers all year round although spring and autumn are the most prolific flowering periods in the garden.

Some of the exotic and rare orchids can also be found either in baskets or in protected spots on the ground. Garden lighting, water and garden features and the use of bush rocks and logs have created a relaxing environment, enhanced by the additional placement of historic farm implements and pieces of equipment. The goal of creating Orchid Grove was to make every area a place of interest, features and new discoveries. It is still an ongoing, 'unfinished' symphony of sight, sound, colour and scent. Orchid Grove is located at 17 Barkston Court, Buderim, and will be open to the public from 9.30am - 4.30pm each day. Entry is $7 for adults, with under 15s free.

reasons why you’re guaranteed to get the best looking lawn in the street from Wild Horse Turf

1 2 3 4 5 6

You’ll get personal service.

When you phone Wild Horse Turf you’ll speak to the person who will cut your grass for you. We’ll listen to your needs and help you achieve the lawn of your dreams. You’ll get great back-up service and receive emails with advice for establishing and maintaining your lawn, long after you’ve laid it.

You’ll get the best quality grass.

We’re sure that you’re getting the topmost quality grass, because we grow it ourselves. We use biological fertilising agents for healthier grass that will establish your new backyard faster.

You’ll get the freshest grass.

We’ll cut your turf to order, so you get the freshest turf available. From the moment it’s harvested, turf starts to deteriorate and die. Limiting the time from the paddock to your yard is a great way to give your lawn the best start. When you buy from landscape yards and hardware stores, you risk buying sick turf that’s been sweating on the pallet for days.

You’ll get what you’re paying for.

Our Sapphire soft-leaf buffalo and Empire Zoysia are grown in paddocks that have been certified by Ozbreed, the breeders of Sapphire and Empire. So when you buy turf from us you can be confident that you’re getting what you pay for.

You’ll get a flatter, better-looking lawn.

We keep a close eye on each and every slab that's cut so you’ll get more consistent turf and a flatter, better-looking lawn. When it comes to quality control, our team is dedicated to a hands-on approach.

No trailer? No worries.

Wild Horse Turf values our local customers so we offer a free courtesy trailer for locals to transport their new lawns home. Or ask about our affordable delivery and laying rates.

Orders over 100m will receive a 10kg bucket of our specialty turf fertiliser

which contains the nutrients that are essential for early root establishment and healthy plant growth

with Karen Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery

Wild about bush foods If you've ever wanted to explore cooking with bush foods but don't know where to start, there are many fabulous books (my favourites are ‘Coo-ee Cuisine’ by local Indigenous chef Dale Chapman and Jan Sked's ‘Go Native – Wild Food Cookbook’) and some excellent websites such as www.ilovewarrigalgreens.com.au. However, if you like to taste test, see demonstrations and enjoy sharing ideas with others over a cup of lemon myrtle tea, then maybe join our Wildfood Saturdays. Held on the last Saturday of each month, we explore two easily sourced local bush foods. The small group of only 10 allows lots of time to enjoy the unique flavours and experience these amazing ingredients. Recipes and further information is provided. So far we have enjoyed Warrigal Greens in spinach and feta slices, and pesto with macadamia nuts. Lemon myrtle recipes included panna cotta, tea and infused oils. Join us for the next Wildfood Saturday for Davidson plums and sea celery taste experiences. Our next event is on this Saturday, August 26, from 2.30 - 4pm. Cost is $20 per person. To book, email Nursery@forestheart.com.au or call Karen on 0427 607 628. Karen and her husband Spencer Shaw run Forest Heart 20 Coral Street, Maleny Nursery in Maleny. Their nursery concentrates on local 07 5435 2193 native plants, bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, fruit OPEN Tue - Fri 9am-5pm trees, non-invasive exotics, tools and equipment, garden Sat 8am - 2:00pm and ecology education, books, DVDs, art and so much more.

In theGarden Backyard Stickybeak ... Frogshollow As part of this year’s Gardening on the Edge, six gardens were opened to the public – one was Frogshollow at Flaxton. Although Frogshollow is a grand garden ... and it is certainly that ... many of the elements follow the basic rules that can make anyone’s garden into a mini-Frogshollow. Owners Deb and Ian have only been working on the garden since 2013, and have definitely shown flair and forethought in their design and plant selection. The house, gardens and sheds occupy 2.5 acres of the 13.5 acre property, with the remainder being rainforest. The ornamental gardens are a mixture of native and exotics. The gardens surrounding the house tend to be more compact and varied in composition, which then gives lovely colourful and interesting outlooks from the place where they spend most of their time – in the house. Further away from the house, the gardens change to sweeping areas where feature plants and the more exotica can be given space to shine. Here natives are grouped together, many with name labels ... which is a great idea for visitors to your garden and forgetful homeowners alike. Gingers and heliconias are located at the outskirts of the garden, which allows them to grow to their full extent in height and width, meaning that flowers are plentiful. So much so that they supply a stall at the Noosa Farmers Market. This is an important thing to remember about the larger gingers and heliconias ... they do need space to be at their best.

If you don’t have much space in your garden, a good trick is to create one spectacular feature that defines the space and then build your landscape around that. Here, Deb and Ian have used what they describe as a ‘natural swimming pool’ – it’s what is shown on the cover page of the ‘Your Backyard’ feature (page 29). This is below the house and so forms a lovely outlook from the living and outdoor areas. Productively, the garden is tops, with a good vegetable and herb area, fenced off from the free ranging chickens, which then help to keep pests under control in the rest of the garden.

It is home to native rainbow fish and a number of breeding turtles. Keeping cane toads at bay is a big headache for many gardeners whose gardens have water features – especially if you’re wanting it to become prime frog habitat. Deb and Ian have cleverly used thick edge plantings of reeds, sedges and other dense plants to create a barrier. The water is circulated through a gravel bed and wetland to naturally clean and filter it. Water movement and purification is often forgotten about, leading to garden dams becoming swampy and rank.

Another option is to simply reticulate the water through a fountain, which will oxygenate the water and create movement within the waterbody; or pump it up to the top of an artificial creek and let the water flow back over rocks and plants into the main body.

34

In smaller gardens, free ranging chickens will need to be managed so that they don’t destroy your gardens, the neighbour’s gardens, and are safe from dogs and other predators.

Even though we all don’t have the pleasure of large spaces such as at Frogshollow, all gardens need to conform to a similar set of rules. Use what you have well, improve on what is lacking and most of all ... make the space something which soothes the soul and enriches the space where you live. The Maleny Garden Club is always looking for different gardens to feature in their annual Gardening on the Edge event. If you would like to find out more about having your garden considered as part of the 2018 event, you can send them an email via gardenontheedge@gmail.com.

Ladies Golf Contributed by Brenda Briese Whew!! How hot was Thursday! Still we had a very good turn out to play a Men’s Invitation Day - 88 Players. We played an American Foursomes game. As usual there is lots of fun on these days and we start with morning tea which is always organised by Joan Harvey. A few of our ladies generously bring something. The results are: Winners Les Hatchman and Carol Cork, 69.37 nett; First Runners up Monica Dangerfield and Marshall Caldwell 69.87 nett; Second Runners up Barb Drury and Barry Collett 71.75 nett. NTPs: (2) S & G Williamson, (5) P Heehan and T Dixon, (16) M Bosnjak and C Stone, (18) L and R Doyle. BRD went to 74 nett. Saturday August 12 was a Stableford with 19 ladies. Winner Sue Williamson 38 pts, Runner up Hope Hannah 37 pts. NTPs: (2) Betty Howe, (5) Lesley Eggleston, (16) and (18) Hope Hannah. Until next time, good golfing to all. Men's and Medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme An impressive 172 players enjoyed hot weather during Wednesday's single Stableford competition.

Dry conditions mean longer drives but the increase in green speed caused a lot of problems with multiple putts – particularly on the 17th. Mal Bosnjak returned to form again, taking out A grade narrowly with 37 points. Six players scored 35 with Marshall Caldwell winning the count back. B grade was similarly close with Clive Woodroffe (37) winning by a point from five tied on 36. Stewart Meredith won the count back. In C grade, Ray Barraclough (42) pipped Brian Green by one. NTPs: 2 - Grace Ferguson, 5 - Shannon Verkade, 16 - Charlie Bevan, 18 - Geoff Williamson. On Saturday players had to contend with strong, gusty, cold winds plus occasional dust clouds. The uncomfortable conditions were reflected by the scoring, the run down going to a very generous 32 points. Winners and grinners - A grade Luke Doyle on 36 by a point from Wednesday's runner up Marshall Caldwell. B grade - Caloundra visitor Mark Burrow on 37 by a point from Geoff Clarke, fighting his way back to form. Our Seniors Captain, Trevor Kamp, won C grade on 38 by one from Rod Cogzell. NTPs: 2 - Mark Burrow, 5 - Ben Wells, 16 - Wayne Burnett, 18 - John Merritt.

Contributed by Jim King Keep an eye out for the August newsletter which is available through our Facebook page and will be distributed via email this week. Congratulations to Brett Gillis and Joe Walters on another excellent publication. Tuesday pairs were won by Peter Duffy and Doug McGufficke and the jackpot remains to be won. Wednesday saw an excellent turn-out of 21 Maleny bowlers to play two bowl triples with our New Zealand visitors. The visitors enjoyed the very warm conditions we organised for them. The competition was played in mixed teams of locals and kiwis – 2 games of 12 ends. The winners were Imela Holdom (NZ), Scott Alexander and Brett Gillis. Prizes were also awarded to the team with the lowest score (no losers at bowls!) – Dianne Mulhane (NZ), Relma Godfrey and Derek Wilson. Two Kiwis won the spider events – Robin Ware and Debbie Yemm. Raffle winners were Aaron Halford (NZ), Des Whittle (NZ), Doug McGufficke and Joan Ware (NZ). Thanks to all who assisted Laurie Fawns with the delicious afternoon tea. Keen Barefooters turned up for twilight bowls as well and the winners were Outlaws and Mighty

On Wednesday, the club will be represented at the Woodford triples competition by Derek Wilson, David Burgess and Miles Allen. We are pleased that Maple Street Meats ($20 meat tray) and Watson’s Garage ($20 petrol) are continuing their sponsorship of the Friday members draw. Members are encouraged to attend to enjoy some hospitality and to support the club. On Monday, August 28, the club will host the monthly jackpot pairs. The ladies winning Glasshouse/Donnybrook 4th Division Pennant side 2017

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Contributed by Pauline Fraley Another challenging hit out for the Wonders against a solid Nambour outfit saw scores locked at 5 sets apiece with 2 sets to play. A final surge got the Wonders home with the final score 7/5 and 62 games to 56. Frank Byrnes was the day's star, winning all 4 of his sets, with fill in Sean Lepper only 1 game off that pace going down in a tie break with Jani. Excellent afternoon's tennis in perfect conditions should see the Wonders remain 3rd on the ladder but still in the hunt for the finals. Thanks to Jani, Jane and Carolyn for an above and beyond performance. Unfortunately for Witta Wagtails, Kawana Slammers were the winners of the day. As usual the Wagtails put up a good fight and enjoyed the day of tennis. Thanks to Janet, Claire, Eunice and Sonia. The Whistlers played at Caloundra against the Racquettes, it was very windy and we all struggled with wind taking the balls everywhere. We had to run extra distances and hit the balls harder to get over the net. We had a good win and as usual, had enough for the day. Score was 46-25 games, 4 sets all. Team was Brenda Warner, Liz Mellish, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats also battled the wind with some very interesting results. It was very close all day but the wind worked for the opposition. Pauline, Stacey, Libby and Anne going down to Caloundra Skylarks, 3-5 sets and 33-38 games. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

Super Strawberry

One week to go!

Here we are already with the results of Round 7 in the 2017 Super Strawberry competition – how fast those weeks have gone! There's one week to go for any aspiring champions, so this is your last chance to find the ‘biggest’ and the ‘most unusual’ strawberries for 2017. Round 7 saw some interesting contestants; and John Allen, Oaklands Farms, wins both sections with this entry weighing 87 grams, which the stewards have called ‘Thumbs up’. Round 8 (final round) closes at 4pm on August 25, but you can bring in potential winners to the Coochin Creek Co-op at any time during the week. The final results will be announced and prizes awarded on Saturday at the Beerwah Charity Sports, Beerwah Sports Ground. Thanks again to Beerwah Hotel, sponsor for this novelty event, and to Coochin Creek Co-operative for their support – especially Heather and Tom who have acted as stewards. This competition is run each year in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival – a major community fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland.

Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Ken Barker We are entering a very active period in the croquet calendar. The club championships are underway. In second division, early results are: Donna Manning 11 defeated Nick Cram 8, and Ken Barker 18 defeated Vince Carbery 14. The division three and four championships will hit off this Sunday 20th. Sarah Widin and Robert Elliott are competing for Division 3 honours. Priscilla Vickers, Helen Andrews, Ted Gardner, and Sally Adams are the combatants in Division 4. The bookies will have a difficult job with that field. Spectators are welcome. On Saturday, the club hosts Nambour in the Bray Shield competition. This event lasts all day and consists of two games of singles played in the morning followed by a game of doubles in the afternoon. The winner of the round is decided on games won. On Friday, we entertain a group from Caloundra who visit monthly to enjoy some games of golf croquet and the pleasure of our company. These events are a great time to hone hoop running skills and all members are encouraged to attend. Monday sees three of our players, Vince Carbery, Nick Cram and Ken Barker, off to Buderim to compete in the Golden Oldies competition where you acquire a handicap advantage by virtue of your age. Every five years over 65 gains you an extra bisque. This strangely ageist rule is not to be confused with the notorious ‘Glasshouse Regulation’, which cannot be divulged here without a classification clearance. Good luck to all players in their games. For details contact Vince Carbery 5494 2193 (president), or Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555 (secretary). 45

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface. Make sure you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato

ARIES March 21 - April 20 Make sure you give top priority to your work and health. This is a week when steady application over shortcuts and service or cooperation, beats hands down, a single independent approach. Two heads are better than one, so teamwork will bring you success. Any plans made by couples are blessed. Be willing to go back to old travel plans. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 The good news will be the forward movement of the planet Saturn, as decisions will now be based on facts regarding any plans for the future. This means getting all the details right, facing reality before you consider announcing it to others. A big project can be constructed with the suitable cooperation of others to manifest a dream. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 The last eclipse, also known as a New Moon, has marked this week as the beginning of some major change in your viewpoint. You will probably also notice new developments concerning relatives and neighbours. The change from Leo to Virgo signals that your home life will be more of a focus over the coming month. Start home improvements. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Be ready to grasp new financial opportunities as the sun moves into the sign of Virgo. Avoid rash spending, or seeking hasty profits, however get ready to grasp financial opportunities, giving those monetary matters extra time. Be specific in how you word things so others understand. Perhaps a career change makes your self-esteem shine.

sacks. Then try 50-lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.) After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks. Contributed by Kevin Speirs Elimbah

LEO July 23 - August 22 You should note that the last weekend will turn out to be the high point of your life this year! That New Moon in your sign says for the next six months you will show off your unique qualities. A nice change is coming up, be prepared to take a chance. Make sure you are all about practical action now, as Saturn moves direct bringing solid results. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 Now that Saturn will go direct, after being retrograde for some time, and therefore stalling old projects, you will now see Venus entering Leo. As last weekend had a major eclipse in that sign there will be a lot of work for you to do over the next six months. Remove yourself from old self limitations. Best time to turn obstacles into progress. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Now this week we see Saturn moving direct again so that makes a good aspect to your sign. Therefore efforts to overcome personal as well as professional limitations receive support. If there are upsets at home or at work it possibly will be caused by Mercury still in its retrograde period. Give everyone their own space to take decisive action. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The New Moon last weekend shines the need to overcome stress in your business zone. The Universe may present to you a sudden new opportunity, and as the Virgo birthdays enter after the 22nd you will be thrilled to see social activities working towards an overseas agenda. Unstable relationships make for disappointment and disruption now.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 All signals are pointing towards the areas of education, travel, archeology or studying the law. For the next six months you are likely to take on the role of a teacher. With Saturn moving forward again you have a most fortunate and structurally sound project that will suddenly take you in a new direction. It will aid you in constructing a new life. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 As the Moon moves into the intellectual sign of Virgo, it is generally compatible with your sign. Saturn, your ruler, is going direct now, working with the Moon making any worrisome affairs easier, and loosening its hold on the past. Learn to let go and move ahead. You have every efficient reasoning power you need to make decisions. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 The next six months place a positive accent upon relationships, partnerships and alliances of all sorts, especially to see the new pathway to a breakthrough and change. Professional relationships, under the forward movement of Saturn, will see you being wise where there is a need for personal space of others. Sign up for a course. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Action is well timed this week to continue building any project or agenda you have been working on. We have the Sun entering your opposite sign, namely Virgo, so good partnerships will be your focus. By this weekend Saturn will be going direct and that will pull you out of the old career stall you might have been experiencing.
