Hi Everyone Well with February almost done with – I am starting to feel a little concerned about my New Year’s Resolutions, I am not sure if I am living up to them. I would have to say that I have been working towards them, but maybe in a half hearted way, so kind of like 50 per cent effort. But I have been comforting myself that I am not alone – (I am pretty sure that I am not alone) – in the enthusiasm of the new year it is easy to get carried away about what we want to do this year. As February and now March roles around actually keeping focused on them is quite a different matter. But if you too have also found yourself wavering on those New Year’s resolutions or those things on your ‘To Do List’ for life then we are here to help get you back on track. In the coming weeks we will be including a special feature entitled
‘Resolution Solutions’ and we would love to hear from anyone who is doing well working on their resolutions and what tips they might have for the rest of us to become a little more focused? So if you have managed to improve your finances, lose weight, get fitter / healthier, start working on your bucket list or any other challenges you have decided to tackle – remember sharing your secrets to success will make you feel even better – send your comments to editorial@gcnews.com.au Regards,

Generous donation to Beerwah High Chaplaincy John Reader, from Palmwoods, is the type of man who is more than happy to do a good deed quietly and not have anyone know about it. In fact the only reason he agreed to talk about his generous gesture for the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy is in the hope that other people in the community will be inspired to donate as well.
John, a land surveyor, donated the ‘cost of a job’, a cheque for $1,000, to Chaplain, Mike Turner. The idea came about when John attended the Chaplaincy Fundraising Golf Day at Beerwah Golf Club last year. “While I was at the function a fellow came up to me and asked me to do a job, and I said, well, I’ll do the job if you pay the money direct to the Chaplain.” John decided to support the Chaplaincy because his wife Cindy works at Beerwah High and he has heard what a great job Mike does. “I like it when people take time to help kids. My wife speaks ever so highly of how much effort Mike puts in, how much time, how much sacrifice he puts in to help the kids at this school; and not just the kids but also their parents to a large degree. And I just think that’s great, so I’m more than happy to help him improve other people’s lives – especially the kids. He does a great job and there’s not enough people like him around.” There have been Chaplains at Beerwah High since 1993, with Mike coming on board in 2007. Mike works five days a week, but is the only staff member not paid by the government. Instead he receives a salary from the Scripture Union Qld, a charity which receives one hundred per cent of its funding from the community.
Beerwah High Principal Graham Trevenen with Mike Turner and John Reader
In a time when teenagers have to deal with a lot more stressful issues than ever before, the Chaplaincy plays a vital role in helping kids that need support. “It’s about building relationships, being a point person for them,” Mike said. “Being here every day makes a big difference. I talk to kids, and their mums and dads - whether kids drop in to our office, or teachers or mums and dads ask us to see them. I run activities each week, in class stuff, run special programs like mentoring and organise challenge days and camps. I also get involved with the community and community events.” Mike received John’s generous donation with thanks. “I think it’s awesome, it’s a big deal. This community is very generous.” John hopes the support will continue. “If nothing else, come along to the next Golf Day and be part of it. It’s a good fun day,” he said.

Bowel Scan Project to kick off Contributed by George McKenzie, president
The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains is once again holding their annual Bowel Scan program in conjunction with participating local chemists from March 1 - 31. Kits can be purchased from Soul Pattinson Beerwah, Glasshouse Pharmacy and Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy. This program is organised by Rotary clubs of the Sunshine Coast and North Brisbane. Over the past 26 years, almost four million test kits have been sold, with a positive detection rate averaging one per cent. That means that 40,000 people’s lives may have been saved. The incidence of this disease increases with age, particularly over the age of 40, and bowel cancer kills over 4,000 men and women each year, more than lung, breast and prostate cancer. Early detection can result in treatment and cure in about 90 per cent of cases. Last year there were 12 positives detected locally which needed further testing. For more information, contact George Mackenzie on 5439 9371 or Peter Farrell on 5493 0230.

An excited Beerwah resident, Nicholas Lythall, 17, has won second prize in the Sunshine Coast Council’s library card design competition. Nicholas’s prize, a JB HI-FI shopping voucher worth $75.00, was presented to him at Beerwah Library last Friday. Nicholas’s love of reading inspired his futuristic design, which features library books on a shelf. He said he used pixel art to create the books then enlarged them, and used a different program to put them on the card with the backing. After completing Year 12 at Glasshouse Country Christian College last year, Nicholas is heading for the Queensland University of Technology this week. He will study for a three year Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment degree. First prize in the competition was won by Mitch Winterburn of Yandina Creek. The competition attracted 114 entries from young people all over the Sunshine Coast. The winning entries will appear on the new youth library membership Nicholas with his winning design cards later in 2011.

forward to lose their locks for the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual World’s Greatest Shave. We’ve tracked down two locals who are proud to be participating in such a worthy event. Glass House Mountains Sam Engle, 27, decided to participate in this year’s event to help others she knows who have been affected by cancer. She will host a community event from 12.30pm on Saturday, March 12 at the Glasshouse Community Hall. “I decided to shave because I have family member that has been battling with cancer for the last five years. And I met a lady about six months ago, she’s got all different types of cancer as well, and they’ve inspired me. They don’t take anything for granted, they take each day as it comes and if they’re that brave dealing with cancer then I’m sure I can shave my head to raise a bit of money or a little bit of awareness.” Sam’s goal is $5,000. “I will be having a few stalls there including a cake stall and a sausage sizzle with all money going towards the Leukaemia Foundation,” Sam said. “If I could get a few local businesses on board that can also set up a stall or put something towards my sponsorship that would be awesome.” If you would like to donate, sponsor or set up a stall on the day visit http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/ personalPage.aspx?registrationID=369095 or email bundyrumchic@hotmail.com Rebekah Podmore, 18, from Beerwah is another big-hearted local willing to sacrifice her long locks to join the World’s Greatest Shave fundraising event.

Rebekah Podmore
Rebecca will be outside Woolworths Beerwah on Saturday, March 12, taking donations from 9.30am - 12.00noon. Her best friend Clancy will give Rebekah a number one shave at 10.00am. Participating in the World’s Greatest Shave was something Rebekah had wanted to do since she was in high school. “In school I had wanted to do it, but then I thought no, grad might come up or the deb ball or something and I’d need hair. Then mum had a friend who did it, and she got cancer, so at the end of last year I decided I’d do it,” Rebekah said. “I’m kind of excited more than anything. I’ve decided to dye it crazy colours and will try different things since it will be cut off anyway,” she said. Already Rebekah’s generous friends and family have donated to help her reach her minimum target of $1,000, while her employer, Woolworths Beerwah, has also generously pledged to match whatever Rebekah raises. You can catch Rebekah outside Woolworths in the days leading up to the event to collect donations, so keep an eye out for her. Alternatively, contact her on 5494 6978 or visit http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/ personalPage.aspx?SID=137389&Lang=en-CA

Be inspired and volunteer to Clean Up your backyard! If, like many other Queenslanders, our state’s recent wild weather has made an impact on you, and you are inspired by the countless stories and images of communities taking action together, you might consider donating your time to this year’s annual Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 6. Locally, well known environmental crusader Jan Kesby from the Mooloolah Riverwatch and Landcare will coordinate the clean up at Mooloolah, which kicks off with registration from 8.30am at Martin Rungert Park, in Mooloolah’s town centre. The clean up, which will run until 11.30am, will be followed by a barbeque for all volunteers. Jan said she is expecting more rubbish than previous years, and also hopes to improve on last year’s participation numbers, when 22 adults and children volunteered for the event. “Come and be the change you want to see in the world,” Jan said. Hot spots to be targeted will include Mooloolah Connection Road and Neill Road. The Mooloolah River will be targeted the Friday prior, when Jan leads a team of Green Army participants in cleaning up the river system, which has been affected by all the rain and flooding.
To participate on the day, simply turn up at the park, or give Jan a call on 0407 641 327 or email janmrw@caloundra.net. For details on other local sites, or to register a site, go to www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au or phone 1800 CUA DAY. Last year, 97,486 Queenslanders worked across 1,340 registered sites, with roadways the most polluted area in the state, averaging twice the number of rubbish items per site than any other location, and plastics, glass and paper the major sources of rubbish. In 2011, local NGOs and local government agencies working with Clean Up Australia Day
Jan Kesby with some of the volunteers who helped clean up Mooloolah last year
organisers are predicting a huge shift of the types and accumulation sites of rubbish, with a focus on waterways, parks and flood perimeter zones. Clean Up Australia Day is the country’s largest community participation event run solely with the assistance of local volunteers. This year, organisers are working closely with local authorities, channeling volunteer efforts to registered sites that have been approved as safe by relevant Councils. Did you know? Queensland generates roughly eight million tonnes of waste a year, of which 53 per cent goes to landfill • Queensland has the lowest waste generation per person in Australia • The amount of paper removed by volunteers in Queensland was well above the national average of 15 per cent • Roadways were the most polluted sites surveyed in Queensland with 1,347 items of rubbish collected per site, which is a 64 per cent increase from 2009 • Cigarette butts accounted for nine per cent of all rubbish collected from sites in Queensland, down from 24 per cent in 2008 and 17 per cent in 2009 • Plastic was the most common rubbish item found in Queensland, making up 30 per cent of all rubbish, a slight increase from 28 per cent in 2009

Links to history
Twin Cedars Lifestyle Villas, the exclusive over 50s retirement village on Steve Irwin Way near Beerburrum, with its wonderful views of Mt Tibrogargan, has its own special memento of local Glasshouse Mountains history. On the walking track around Twin Cedars you will find the location that the Royal Historical Society of Queensland commemorated of Matthew Flinders’ camp site when he explored the area and climbed Mount Beerburrum, after sailing along Pumicestone Passage in July 1799. Twin Cedars has been part of the changing heart of the Glasshouse Mountains district for over six years and is in the final phase of its stage two development. Boasting its lovely semi-rural location, easy proximity to both Caloundra and Brisbane, and its community hall with swimming pool, spa, barbeque areas, pool table, hairdressing salon, video library and gym, Twin Cedars has certainly changed since Matthew Flinders’ visit! Twin Cedars is commencing the planning for stage three of the development, the final stage of the overall Village, with generous cash rebates for purchasers to take advantage of in the stage two clearance sale which starts February 21, until March 12. Come along to one of the open house weekends running over the next month and you are more than welcome to take a stroll along the walking track to the Matthew Flinders site. For more information go to www.twincedars.com.au or call 1300 307 659.
Local James mobile car cleaning franchisees win a heart for Valentine’s Day David and Debra Kelsey, local James Home Services car cleaning franchisees had a great lead up to Valentine’s Day when they won the heart of a local. The motivated couple were out marketing their business at Beerwah Marketplace with a promotion that saw any client that booked a service go into the draw for a great Valentine’s Day hamper. After a very busy day of booking quotes, the winner was drawn. Congratulations to Beerwah local Marie, who had booked her car in for a full detail. An excited Marie was over the moon, saying she had never won anything before.

Why are we waiting?
I am writing due to my concern about the southern entry onto Steve Irwin Way. We have traffic leaving the highway at 110km/ph and slowing as they enter a major arterial roadway for the southern Sunshine Coast. Here you are greeted with an icon of Australia on one side, and a flashing ‘Dangerous Traffic Conditions Ahead’ on the other. Now this area falls into the gray zone of who owns it? Federal, state or council? Who cares. The real question is who is going to fix it? Now speak to the local, state and federal member’s and they would agree that it should have happened yesterday, and since council has the road crews it falls to them. Now some would
argue over who pays, but this is government, they won’t disappear overnight, it will be paid. The real question is why are we waiting? A simple series of potholes has grown into a lunar landscape and unless council intends a new tourist attraction, it needs to be fixed. After all, lives have been lost for less, and I for one have seen my share of white crosses resting on the side of the road. Don’t let this be another! Week, after week, after week we wait, WHY? I read your letter with interest. Our councillor Anna is always helpful. I wondered if you had sent your letter off to Anna Bligh? I know she is very busy with her photo shoots but she should know the difficulties people have getting help. Her email address is thepremier@premiers.qld. gov.au Best of luck. Sunshine on a rainy day
One day last week, my two young children and I were waiting at the bus stop at Pinelands Drive, Beerwah, when it started to rain (for those who aren’t aware, there isn’t a bus shelter at this particular bus stop). A gentleman, in the truest sense of the word, in a white Pajero saw us and pulled over, and offered us his umbrella. “Just keep it,” he said. Our sincere thanks for this very kind gesture. It’s certainly nice to be part of such a friendly, caring community. A grateful Beerwah resident

Nambour / North Coast The Nambour / North Coast Division of the Queensland Country Women’s Association is proud to invite all Sunshine Coast women to join them at the QCWA expo from 9.30am - 4.00pm on Thursday, March 24 in the Nambour Hall, located on the stunning new Town Square in Short Street. Along with images of the flag, the slouch hat, and sepia photos of this country’s pioneer stock, sit the traditions of the Country Women’s Association. For support when times were tough, when rural Australia struggled to attract funding for essential services, or when nature challenged us, the CWA was there for other women and their families, offering friendship, support, physical help and often just ‘a cuppa and a shoulder’! But the CWA is so much more than most of us realise. Throughout Australia, thousands of women of all ages, in country towns, regional centres and urban areas, belong to this extraordinary group which has cared for the welfare of all women and their families since the 1920’s. CWA members work to support scholarship programs, medical research, aged care, health and education services. It has a strong voice on issues which concern women through government advocacy, and conducts extensive support work, engaging with International CWA members and communities in need throughout the world. In local branches, members represent age sectors across 50 and more years, honoring and sharing experiences gained through life including fascinating handcraft skills far too valuable to lose. Through stalls displaying the work of convenors for 12 different areas of interest, expo visitors will experience first hand the work of the CWA. From clown make-up to photography, to inspirational public speakers telling their stories, dressmaking, handcraft, cooking and floral arrangement, visitors can expect something (surprising) for everyone! Country hospitality will be served, and home made goods will be for sale. Connecting with local women, making a difference to the lives of others, and developing a wide range of skills, the 14 local branches of the Queensland Country Women’s Association welcome new members of all ages. For more information contact Division President Joy Coulson, phone 5442 5663.

What a wonderful response to our request for linen for flood devastated areas. One could not imagine finding hardly enough room to move for donations. All have been sent to new homes. Thank you, everyone. Our next function will be a Cent Sale on Thursday, February 24 with morning tea at 9.30am. Funds from this day will be channelled through QCWA in the way of vouchers for needy people, anywhere in Queensland, to be used in their towns. Vouchers could be used for food or to replace the electrical frypan, etc, all administered by the local CWA branch. Your support is welcome by attending the Cent Sale. Always good prizes on hand.

Glasshouse Country View Club ‘Sailing in my Sarong’
Contributed by Pauline Clarke, publicity officer
During this month’s meeting the View Club circumnavigated the world! Our guest speaker Linda Frylink Anderson, and her husband Bill, are living proof that it’s never too late to fulfil your dream. After 30 years of fantasizing about sailing around the world, they finally set sail on an action packed voyage that would take two years to complete. Never mind that Linda suffered from sea sickness, was petrified of storms and had little sailing experience, or that the couple were to make the trip in their home built yacht, this 30,000 nautical mile voyage was about achieving their dream. Linda told a story of battling gales and sailing through the world’s pirate hot spots; of exploring exotic and remote communities and integrating with the locals; and of experiencing the vastness of the great oceans and making new friends at each destination. But above all, the story is one of overcoming a challenge of massive proportions and leaving a tiny part of themselves in every single one of the 30 countries they visited in their yacht. Linda’s book ‘Sailing in my Sarong’ makes compelling reading and can be purchased by emailing Linda on valiam1@hotmail.com for $35.00 plus $10.00 postage or it is availalbe through the Beerwah Library. The next club meeting will be held on March 16 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, 11.00am for an 11.30am start. This meeting will include lunch and, especially for St Patricks Day, a theme of ‘Wear a Little Green’. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5494 8444 or Pauline on 5438 7076.

support programs for men with prostate cancer, and their partners,” she said. Prof Chambers said the program compares different types of support to evaluate the effectiveness of different strategies in helping couples to cope and adjust. “By asking couples about their experiences and keeping in touch with them over time, we will be able to identify the best ways to help men and their partners in the future.” Men recently diagnosed with prostate cancer who have decided to have surgery, or who have had surgery in the past 12 months, and their partners, are eligible to participate in the program. Participants must be able to complete questionnaires and telephone interviews to take part in the study and can live anywhere in Queensland. Couples interested in participating in ProsCan for Couples can contact Cancer Council Queensland’s Project Officer, Sylvia Burns, on 3634 5382.

Couples who have been affected by prostate cancer are being urged to participate in a new Cancer Council Queensland research program. On the eve of Cancer Council Queensland’s 50th anniversary, ProsCan for Couples has been launched to find better ways to help men and their partners adjust to the changes they may experience following surgery for prostate cancer, particularly sexual changes. Professor Suzanne Chambers, lead researcher on ProsCan for Couples said couples involved in the program would help develop better services to address the impacts of prostate cancer. “Treatment for prostate cancer can have a range of side effects on sexual function, which can negatively impact intimate relationships. “This program aims to identify an effective way to improve sexual and psychosocial adjustment for both men with prostate cancer and their partners. “Couples who participate in the program will play a vital role in the development of improved

March at the Library
with Chirone Witsen
Full Moon shake-ups with the Equinox
with Dell Simpson
We welcome our popular staff member, Anne back to Beerwah Library. Anne’s absence has certainly been noticed on ‘story’ days and old and new friends will be able to experience her happy smiling service again when visiting. The lucky winners of the award winning bears and porcelain dolls were Jessi, Faye, Anne and Annie. The funds raised have been donated to the Salvation Army through our local Westpac Bank to assist with flood relief. We thank, very sincerely, all who gave to this very worthy cause and also to our very generous (and anonymous) donator of the prizes. We are keen to build our Home Library Service and are searching for persons who may benefit from a home delivery of library items. If you know anyone who is housebound, please let them know that they can get library items delivered to their own home by one of our Home Library Service volunteers. We welcome our new Justices of the Peace, Terry and John who have recently joined us. We can now offer JP services at the library on both Monday and Thursday from 10.00am - 12.30pm. Diary dates for March (please note bookings required for all sessions): March 9, solar power session; March 16, Dave Morgan will be at the library, speaking about his book, ‘Ice Journey’. Our Friends of the Library will be serving afternoon tea after Dave’s session; March 23, ‘Let’s Get Digital’ will be run for small business owners and will teach how to make a website work harder, generate leads and create more customers; March 30, Wayne Hutcheson will reveal the world’s first formula for working smarter not harder at his session, ‘Business Right’. For all information and things library, including bookings to the above events, please visit us at 25 Peachester Road or visit us online at http://library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au For all information and things library, please visit us at 25 Peachester Road or visit us online at http://library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au Beerwah Library (phone 5494 0221)

With the huge shift in the Mayan calendar last month, evolution of consciousness is accelerating at a rapid rate, giving us the impression that time has speeded up phenomenally. If you have the feeling that time just seems to whizz past, rest assured you’re not imagining things! The New Moon in Pisces on Saturday, March 5 begins a new cycle in our relationship to spirituality and our sense of the divine. It can also represent the desire to help others. But be watchful as there is a fine line between helping others and rescuing them, overstepping boundaries which essentially need to be strengthened and respected. Uranus makes its final move into Aries on Saturday, March 12 after spending some months there last year. Now it’s here to stay for the next seven years, encouraging people to stand up for individual rights, especially against the big corporations, governments, and any hierarchy that has been abusing its power, as witnessed recently in Egypt. The Full Moon falls in Virgo in the early morning of Sunday, March 20 (effectively Saturday night) bringing into focus our need for order and purity. With Uranus close to this Full Moon line-up, there could be some revelations at this time, maybe even shake-ups, so expect the unexpected! The Equinox is the very next morning, Monday, March 21 as the Sun moves into Aries at 9.22am. Day and night are of equal length and the seasons come to a point of balance. This is a good time to explore what might be out of balance in your own life and find a way to restore that balance. Make sure important paperwork, contracts and negotiations are completed well before the end of the month as Mercury brings confusion, mistakes and delays when it goes retrograde for three weeks on Thursday, March 31. The Big River jazz band The Big River jazz band was formed around 30 years ago by leader Trent Horten. The group has played clubs, selected hotels, jazz festivals, and private functions from the AthertonTablelands to Melbourne and features the music of the Dutch Swing College, traditional and Dixie. Trent changed to Saxophones after several years studying piano and turned professional at 21, played in small groups for a few years then left the music scene. He heard the calling again and formed the Big River Jazz Band. The band has changed players over the years but the style and quality of the music continues. The present lineup of seven talented musicians carries on the great tradition of the Big River Jazz Band. The music is great for dancing, and the band will be performing at the Kawana Community Hall Nanyima Street Buddina (behind the library) on Saturday, March 5 from 7.30pm - 10.30pm. Cost $20.00 for club members, $22.50 concessions, $25.00 visitors. Bookings Ted 5491 6017 or Helen 5438 1976 for credit cards. The Big River Jazz Band is sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club and 104.9Sunshine FM.
Community twins become a part of history ‘A World of Twins’ is a photographic study that explores the special world of twins; the unique relationships, the sympathetic likenesses and the common experiences of 33 sets of twins ranging from infants of six weeks to Australia’s first 100-year-old sisters all from the Sunshine Coast region. Among the 33 sets of twins featured in the book, 19 are fraternal, 14 identical and six reside in our community. Twins and their families from communities across Australia interested in showcasing their unique story in future editions can register online at: www.twinsofaustralia.com.au Books can be purchased at the launch, Tuesday, March 15, 5.30pm - 7.30pm at the Ground Zero Gallery, Sunshine Coast Arts Industry Precinct, corner Howard and William Street, Nambour or online at www. twinsofaustralia.com.au. Cemetary update
Our district Library and Hall in Beerwah have now been in place for a decade, and as time has gone by there was a call for a link from the deck to Turner Park. In this year’s budget I secured $1/4 million to provide the platform and it is now out to tender. My aim and that of the council is to have this constructed and in place before the Garden and Sustainability Expo. Once completed it will be another valuable addition to a well used facility. The design is to have a platform deck over to the park with illuminated lighting along the edge lines.
In recent weeks there has been some concerns from the community regarding the presentation of the division’s cemeteries. As the cemeteries are maintained by external contractors, meetings have been scheduled with all contractors to reinforce the expectation of the community and Sunshine Coast Council regarding cemetery presentation. Operational adjustments have also been made to ensure that these contractors are monitored in a more effective manner into the future. Within the next few weeks the community will see a marked improvement in the presentation of the division’s cemeteries.
Development application
Sunshine Coast Bike Week
McDonald’s Australia Limited has lodged a Development Application with the council for a Material Change of Use to construct a McDonalds Restaurant in the new Industrial Estate at the entry to Landsborough. The allotments have a frontage to Caloundra Street and Gateway Avenue. The applicant is proposing to construct a McDonalds Family Restaurant to be open 24 hours a day. 41 car spaces are proposed as well as a drive through and outdoor seating capacity for 31 seats. The applicant has provided extensive planning documentation. As this is a Material Change of Use application it will be publicly advertised and community submissions accepted during that phase. The application number is MCU11/0008, and it can be viewed via ‘PD online’ on Councils website at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
Integrated Transport
Council Continues to meet with Queensland State Government offices on important forward planning for the Sunshine Coast. I will keep the community updated on all projects Council and the State are working on.
Bruce Highway between Roys Road and Bells Creek Road
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has funding to undertake a planning study for the above area with a view to resolving the current median opening. Council officers will be meeting with TMR in the near future to better understand the scope.
Sunshine Coast Council is once again coordinating a series of events for Sunshine Coast Bike Week, scheduled to take place from March 12 - 20. The events are designed to promote cycling and the associated health, travel and environmental benefits to the Sunshine Coast community and provide residents with opportunities to improve their cycling knowledge and skills. Progression from Training Wheels, School Cycle Skills sessions, Women’s Only Workshops and Introductory Group Rides are just some of the events planned. To view a full list of events, head to the events calendar on council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
Festuri
Congratulations to the dedicated volunteers at FESTURI for partnering with council’s community event’s team to deliver a wonderful Australia Day festival at Kings Beach. FESTURI just keeps building upon it strengths, and is pleased to announce the opening of an office space, at the SCAIP building in Nambour. What fabulous synergies these two organisations will have by combining resources! The SCAIP building and FESTURI office is located on the corner of William and Howards Streets, Nambour. The office will initially start part-time and the hours will be listed on the FESTURI website shortly. The community are invited to attend the official opening and AGM on February 24. For more information or to volunteer or gain experience in hosting multicultural events, visit www.festuri.org.au or phone Terri Shine on 0407 036 736 or email info@festuri.org.au

WILL I QUALIFY FOR A HOME LOAN? Looking for your dream home can be an exciting time, but before you start looking, find out how much you can borrow and what you need to do to qualify for a home loan. Lenders vary in how much they will lend, depending on your circumstances and their own policies. That’s why it’s so important to use a professional broker like Smartline - so you understand all your options. Lenders take into account the “estimated” overall cost of the property (including stamp duty and charges) and how much deposit you have when assessing your home loan application. They then
calculate repayments and assess whether you can afford them on your income, using their own inbuilt estimates of household expenditure.
Currently most lenders will lend you 90% of the value of the property and you will then need to provide the remaining amount and cover items such as lenders mortgage insurance, stamp duty and fees. If you are borrowing more than 80% then you will need to pay lenders mortgage insurance - and this, too varies between Lenders.
savings over a 3 - 6 month period (usually proven by providing bank statements over this period). For First Home Owners the First Home Owners Grant can often help with the remaining 5% or the associated lenders mortgage insurance, stamp duty and fees. Different lenders lend different amounts and the difference between interest rates may appear small, but can be quite significant over the period of the loan.
If we look at, say, 7.79% versus 7.59% for example, and apply Be aware that 5% of the remaining that to a $300,000 loan, it adds deposit needs to be in genuine up to $500 per year to the cost of savings. ‘Genuine savings’ means servicing that loan. Over five years, that the funds have come from that may add up to $2,500, which
could fund extra loan repayments or a family holiday. However, cheaper interest rates can also mean large upfront fees or a large exit fee so again do your research.
Finding out about home loans may not seem as exciting as looking for your dream home, but it will mean you are prepared - and best of all you don’t need to do this on your own.

First home buyers are not only doing plenty of research before they buy, they are also knuckling down for nearly two years to save a deposit for their first property, according to new research by the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). The REIQ commissioned research into buyer and seller behaviour in late 2010 which found that, contrary to some media reports, first home buyers are prepared to make sacrifices to gain a foothold in the property market. “Saving a decent deposit – especially in times of tighter lending criteria – is one aspect of home buying that continues to take both time and commitment and today’s first home buyers are prepared to make that commitment,” REIQ managing director Dan Molloy said. “The REIQ research found that on average Queensland first home buyers are saving for 21 months for a deposit and about 35 per cent of first-timers are actually saving for more than two years before approaching a lender for finance.” Across Queensland, the average first home buyer deposit usually represents about 12 per cent of the total purchase price of their first property with 16 per cent of first-timers indicating they managed to save a deposit of 20 per cent or more. The most common deposit size was between five to 10 per cent of the purchase price. The research also found that the most common age range for Queensland first home buyers was between 26 to 35 years who had a combined household income of $80,000 to $100,000. “First home buyers are also doing plenty of research with many often spending more than four months searching online listings and visiting open homes in their quest for their first property,” Mr Molloy said. “The number of first home buyers in the Queensland market is gradually starting to strengthen after hitting historical lows last year and we expect their numbers to increase further this year as interest rates and prices have stabilised.” One third of potential first home buyers say it is their inability to service a mortgage that is the main barrier to home ownership. The next factor preventing many from buying their first home is the current level of property prices.
Property watch Ursula Starkovsky - ABOUT REAL ESTATE has her finger on the pulse and will now be providing regular updates on the property market.
Where is the property market heading? Everyone with a vested interest in the property market will try and talk it up; people connected with the finance industry will talk it down; but where is it really going?

to please the banks (my opinion) and home owners are disappointed when they receive low or no offers.
FEBRUARY 23 2011
Let’s try and put things into perspective. There was substantial growth from 2003 to 2007, where the median price for Beerwah, Landsborough and Glass House Mountains increased by 20 per cent on average each year. After 2007 prices started to decline and they haven’t stopped yet. The median price is what buyers are looking for with the aim to buy at, or below, the median price. But that’s not all that impacts on the price that sellers can expect. Location, presentation, and size are important, but mostly, values
are dictated by prices achieved in the immediate area. No seller likes to hear that, because most are convinced that their home is a lot more valuable than the one recently sold down the street! When selling a property, the saying 'my home is my castle' does not apply; it is a commodity and is traded accordingly at prices the market is willing and able to pay. This is hard for the home seller to accept, but on the bright side, if you get less for your property you also pay less for your next home. So realistically, where is the problem?
Down & Dirty with Brownie Jobs for the yard in March Wait until the rain eases a bit before giving your gardens a fertiliser boost coming into autumn, or else it’ll just wash away and be wasted. At the start of the month, put spring flowering bulbs in the fridge veggie crisper and plant out at the end of the month. Try not to plan any work in the backyard which needs heavy machinery or vehicles, until the soil dries and firms up. Otherwise you risk compacting the ground and churning up soggy soil – not a good practice. White cedar caterpillars are on the move. Wrap a hessian bag around the trunk of a tree and check underneath for the damaging insects as they’ll congregate there during the day. Squash or spray them with a pyrethrum spray. Start planting broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower seedlings from mid-March. Watch out for little green caterpillars, as they can destroy your seedlings overnight. Vegetables Plant carrot, leeks, beans, cauliflower, lettuce, silver beet, spring onion, radish, capsicum, cucumber, eggplant, sweet potato, tomato, melons, pumpkin, okra, zucchini, broccoli, kale, cabbage, rocket, beetroot, garlic, celery, coriander, rosemary, fennel, shallots and parsnips. Flowers Plant alyssum, petunia, marigolds, sweet pea, ageratum, aurora daisy, nigella, calendula, cyclamen, impatiens, salvia, everlasting daisy, forget-me-not, gaillardia, foxglove, lobelia, lupin, nasturtium, schizanthus, Iceland poppy, primula, snapdragon, verbena, cineraria, phlox, cornflower, pansy, statice, stock and viola.

More time to comment on Draft Feral Deer Strategy Stakeholders have until February 28 to comment on Queensland’s first Feral Deer Management strategy. The extension is to give those affected by recent extreme weather events an opportunity to comment. Biosecurity Queensland general manager Dr Bruce Wilson said the strategy was aimed to manage feral deer populations. “Feral deer can damage the environment, pose a disease threat to livestock and carry parasites such as ticks,” said Dr Wilson. “They are also a danger to people, causing traffic accidents in built up areas. Dr Wilson said the strategy is not about getting rid of all feral deer, but managing populations to minimise impacts and the spread of feral deer to new areas. He said said feral deer numbers in Queensland had increased from 20,000 in 1982 to more than 30,000 today, and their distribution had widened considerably. “In May 2009, four deer species were declared pests under Queensland’s Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Regulation 2003. “Under the Act, feral chital deer and feral rusa deer are Class 2 pest animals and feral fallow and feral red deer are Class 3 pest animals. “Landholders have different responsibilities in controlling different classes of pests on their properties, and local governments also have a responsibility to ensure that management of these declared pests is implemented. Anyone who has an interest in feral deer can have their say on the strategy at www.biosecurity.qld. gov.au until February 28. George Woodward Glasshouse Country Uniting Church I received an email today telling me that someone is taking the Federal Government to the High Court over its funding of Chaplaincy in State Schools in Australia. I was saddened to know that someone would want to do this, let alone spend large amounts of money to do so. It seems to me that maybe we are afraid of God and I wonder why. This reminded me of a story I had read some years ago. It is a true but very sad story. A 13-year-old boy became so angry with his father that in a fit of anger and depression found a gun and shot his father. The father died as a result of the gun shots. When the boy was questioned about why he had shot his father he said he hated his father because his father demanded too much of him because his father was always on his case. The boy was placed in a juvenile detention centre and one night as the guard walked past this boy’s room he heard the boy sobbing and saying over and over again, ‘I

want my dad, I want my dad.’ I think we are in danger of doing with God what the boy had done with his dad. We are in danger of killing off God. The one who loves us always we want to write out of the script of life. When I think about chaplains in schools, my experience and knowledge of what they do is that they provide a wonderful, good resource to both staff and students in the school where they are. God is in that goodness. Why would we say we don’t want this? Jesus came to this world to show us the nature of God. Jesus said we should love God and love one another. The world killed Jesus. This God in Jesus continues to love us all and calls us to love in return. I know that there are many questions that seem unanswerable in relation to God but in our search for meaning and purpose in life let us not kill off God. God gives to us the very gift of life and in God’s love for us fulfills that life.

Singing the Basketball Blues
When spectators go to see a basketball match they expect to see a good, competitive, entertaining game, but sometimes they get a bit more than that when basketball team ‘The Blues Brothers’ is on the court. The Blues Brothers has been together for 31 years. Team members are now aged between 46 and 52, and it isn’t unusual for them to sing during time-outs, half-time or after matches, or to break out some cartwheels after scoring. They have ‘Blues Brothers’ outfits, T-shirts and more. It’s even possible they like fried chicken and dry white toast. Ari Moisander from Diamond Valley has been with the team from the beginning. He said the ‘Blues Brothers’ team name came about because the guys were silly enough to watch The Blues Brothers movie back then and thought that was a pretty cool thing to do. “When you go away to carnivals you have to come up with a name for the team, and originally, it started with a hat and sunglasses and it just evolved from there really. We’ve never really played under that name in normal fixtures in normal season; it’s more when we go away on trips.” 32 |
| FEBRUARY 23 2011
Various players have joined and left the team over the years but most of the original team is still playing, even though they live in different areas. They get together to play at carnivals once or twice a year. Last year the team won a Silver Medal at the Alice Springs Masters in the Over 45 Open Division. Some members of ‘The Blues Brothers’ include Alistair Bell, Cliff Brain, Rob Quirk, “Over 30 years we’ve had Sheridan Trend, Tony Stevens, Jan Langford, Ari Moisander and Bruce Rehbock some wins and we’ve had some losses, we’ve “I love the camaraderie with the guys. They’re managed to win one or two carnivals,” Ari said. fun to be with and they’re a good bunch of guys “We think of it as a bonus when we have a win, - and they know how to play basketball so that’s it’s not really our main intention. When we play good. We’re there to play seriously but still have we’re still trying to be competitive, but even if we fun as well.” lose five minutes after the game we’ve forgotten This year the team has been invited to play at all about it. It’s more about the enjoyment of the Masters Basketball Tournament in Logan this being together. Win or lose we still a song, but Queen’s Birthday weekend, and they also plan to we sing with more gusto when we win.” go to the World Masters in Italy in 2013. Ross Smith from Mooloolah is a newcomer to the team.
