1/28 Simpson St, Beerwah Q. 4519
Hi Everyone Regular readers will know that more recently there have been plenty of cranky locals who are unhappy about the mobile phone reception and internet broadband service throughout Glasshouse Country. And for a few weeks earlier this year the normal poor service became even worse, and many users could barely get any reception at all. During this time GCNews followed up readers (and our own) frustration with Telstra regarding the inconvenience it was causing us all. While we were given responses about damage to the mobile tower and maintenance work being completed, the Telstra spokesperson never mentioned that Telstra’s network statistics since February 2011 showed that the Wild Horse Mountain mobile telephone installation has increased approximately 60 per cent and had far exceeded its designed capacity.
Telstra have been working at developing solutions to improve this ‘performance deficiency’ and currently have two Development Applications before Council. One application is about the current mobile telephone installation on top of the water reservoir on Tower Road at Beerwah and the other is for a property opposite the entrance to Glass House Mountains Township. It is good to at least know that behind the scenes there are actually things happening to improve the situation – now we just have to hope that their proposals will be suitable for the locations and they give locals the best possible solutions. See story about Glasshouse application page 6. Regards,

Dany considers herself one of the lucky ones. She’s in reasonably good health, unlike one of her friends, who has already had a double lung transplant.
Where Integrity Still Counts
The disease affects a number of organs in the body, especially the lungs and pancreas, by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus. It can cause irreversible lung damage and in most cases, a premature death. When Dany was diagnosed at three weeks of age, her parents were told her life expectancy would be 18 years, however ongoing research has seen the development of new treatments, and now, Dany’s life expectancy has been increased, to 37 years.

For the past three years, Brendan, supported by members of his congregation, has been heavily involved in helping a small village called Songut, in the southern highlands of Papua New Guinea, to deal with the challenges posed by the mining that is changing the landscape of their surrounds. His first trip to the village in 2009 was a journey of learning and discovery, to find out what he could do to help. When he returned in 2010, he helped the villagers install a water tank, and taught them how to use it, which included an understanding of how to share the water between them all. Last year, he took over a chainsaw with an attachment and taught them how to cut the timber, and when he returns later this year, he hopes to start work on rebuilding the church. In the lead up to the October trip, he is trying to raise funds to purchase a 4WD, and so far, has managed to raise $11,500. “These are people that had never seen a bucket before,” he said. “They live in huts, they have no electricity, and the only building in the village is the church, which is more of a communal meeting place. "They live five hours away from the nearest township, and it’s a two hour hike up the mountain to their village,” he said. “While there have been a lot of cultural differences to overcome, these people have now become like a second family,” Brendan said.
He said the visits, particularly last year’s, are like an emotional rollercoaster, with so many obstacles to overcome, but so much joy to be shared. He said the assistance he and the church have been providing is about helping them to transition into a changing world without destroying their culture. “It’s almost like we are teaching them the very basics of survival, and you can’t put a value on these experiences, it’s what being a Christian is all about.” “It’s about going outside your comfort zone to help others, the next level of being God’s hands and feet,” Brendan said. Brendan has made three videos of his trips to Songut Village, and is happy to share them with anyone who might be interested in learning more about the project. He also invites anyone keen to find out more to come along to their weekly church sessions, 4.30pm every Sunday at the Glasshouse RSL sub-branch. “We'vebeen able to teach them so much, and that is just so rewarding in itself, but what I’ve also learnt in the meantime, it’s difficult to put into words.”

Gowinta Farms in voluntary administration By Lea Parkes Gowinta Farms hit the headlines last week with their decision to outsource all casual seasonal employment to a contractor. It now seems that the local business may have had other issues to contend with. On May 9, the Burys Road, Beerwah primary producer was placed into voluntary administration. Voluntary administration is an insolvency procedure where the directors of a financially troubled company, or a secured creditor with a charge over the company’s assets, appoint
Mitch the latest winner
an external administrator called a voluntary administrator. The role of the voluntary administrator is to investigate the company’s affairs, to report to creditors and to recommend to creditors whether the company should enter into a deed of company arrangement, go into liquidation or be returned to the directors. Gowinta’s Director Lenny Smith, confirmed the appointment of the administrator, however a request for further clarification regarding its impact on the operation of the farm and on the local community wasn’t provided before going to print.
Congratulations to the latest Beerwah Supa IGA Community Chest Raffle Winner, well known local and valued customer, Mitch. Don’t forget, all proceeds go directly to the Community Chest Program, which in turn supports local clubs and organisations. Thank you to everyone for their valued and continued support.
Stupidity on Mt Tibrogargan Contributed by Dave Erbacher, Glasshouse Country SES
At 11.30pm last Saturday night the Glasshouse Country SES were called to assist five climbers, one of whom had been injured after falling over 30 metres. Five male youths had departed Caboolture earlier to go fishing but in a stupid snap decision, they decided to climb Mt Tibrogargan. Two of the youths had climbed the mountain recently and influenced the others that it would be “a piece of cake”. This may be so, given that they had youth and agility on their side, but what was lacking was a major degree of common sense. They set off at approximately 8.00pm with no torches and only a little water. The climb to the top was successful but as in many past cases, they came to grief on the descent. When about half way down they were unable to see the track markers and one of the group slipped and fell over 30 metres and was left hanging onto some small vegetation. One of his mates made his way down to assist and get him to a safe ledge and
called 000 for assistance. The youth suffered quite a few cuts and abrasions and was severely shaken. The remaining guys at least showed some common sense through either good judgement or sheer fright and stayed where they were until assistance arrived. When the SES Crew arrived, Paramedic Merv, Brian and Rachelle were on hand with the injured climber. The remainder of the group were further up the mountain and the SES Crew were able to slowly assist them safely down the remainder of the mountain and arrived back at the car park about 2.30am. SES Group Leader Robert Barry stated that whilst SES members were fully trained to carry out such tasks it is very disappointing that such an impulsive stupid decision not only put the climber’s lives in danger, but those of the rescue crew. He thanked the team of Dave, Louise, Brett, Roger, Robert and Ross for successfully completing the rescue.

Proposed Telstra actions By Lea Parkes
Last week GCNews was contacted by a Glass House Mountains local to advise that a public meeting was underway at the Glasshouse Country RSL regarding the proposal for a new mobile phone tower for 2 Jeffreys Road (directly across from the entrance to the township). It turned out that it was what Telstra call a ‘Drop in Session’ which 80 local homes / businesses that are located in close proximity to the site were advised about and those who attended were given the opportunity to raise questions or concerns about the development application Telstra now has before Council. Telstra has engaged Aurecon (an external company) to run the project and we spoke to their project manager Haley Eske and asked her about the meeting and the concerns people raised. What she said is that generally most people that attended were just relieved that Telstra was doing something to improve the service they are currently receiving, she also provided us with the written response below. ‘Telstra monitors our Next G(r) mobile network on a cell by cell basis to keep track of traffic, and see when we need to install additional infrastructure to an area so that it can continue to receive a quality mobile voice and internet service. Our monitoring of the network in the greater Glass House Mountains area shows that mobile traffic levels have increased, and the existing infrastructure will not be enough to support the demands our customers are placing and will continue to place on the network. Telstra proposes to install a new site on the eastern fringe of Glass House Mountains. This site is expected to absorb the majority of customers located in and around Glass House Mountains area and will ensure long term capacity management for the township. The site at Jeffreys Road was chosen as it is located on the other side of Steve Irwin Way from the centre of the Glass House Mountains Township and the mountains. The mature trees surrounding the site will provide some screening of the monopole from the town centre. The site is sufficiently central to the township to work both efficiently and effectively. Overall the proposal will improve service of the Telstra's Next G(r) network within the area and relieve the capacity of the existing telecommunications infrastructure on Wild Horse Mountain. The maximum signal strength from the Proposed Facility is 0.21 per cent of the allowable public health and safety limit. This is nearly 500 times below the power level Telstra is permitted to transmit 24 hours a day. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Authority (ARPANSA) has created a report for mobile network carriers to demonstrate compliance with national safety standards. This report is called a compliance report.
Proposed Telstra facility
The Industry Code ACIF C654:2004 Deployment of Mobile Phone Network Infrastructure Code requires Telstra to provide the compliance report to Council and also make it publicly available. The compliance report sets out the predicted EME levels and is available on the RFNSA website (www.rfnsa.com.au<http://www.rfnsa. com.au>) under the site number 4518001 (2 Jeffreys Road, Glass House Mountains QLD 4518). It is important to understand that the compliance report predicts the maximum signal strength from the Proposed Facility - assuming that the facility is handling the maximum number of phone calls possible 24 hours a day. In reality, both the Proposed Facility and mobile phone handsets are designed to operate at the lowest possible power. Once a call has been established, the base station and handset reduce their power automatically to the lowest level required to maintain a connection. A development application has been lodged with Council for the proposed telecommunications facility and public notification officially commenced 18 May 2012 and will finish 7 June 2012. We strongly encourage the community to lodge their comments with Council so these can be considered in deciding the application. The new Telstra site is subject to the Council's approval of a development application. If approved, the site could be built by early 2013.’ Cr Baberowski was not involved in any of the pre consultation for the project; however, he understands the concerns of the community and offers the following comments. “During my campaign I spoke to many locals who were extremely dissatisfied with both the mobile phone reception and internet broadband service provided in Division 1. “The lack of service was a frustration for many small business people who need both mobile phone and internet to run their business, and for those relying on it to be able to monitor people with health and mobility issues and particularly when people need to be able to contact emergency services,” he said. “However while we need the improvement to services, Telstra must be able to justify their choices and reasoning of their application. And Council must ensure that the evaluation process for the suitability of the site for any new phone towers is rigorous and is completed on a case by case basis and satisfies the concerns of the community. “I would encourage anyone who has questions or concerns to make contact with the project manager Haley Eske by phone on 3171 8858 or via email Hayley.eske@aurecongroup.com or to lodge a submission to council by 7 June,” Cr Baberowski said. www.gcnews.com.au
New coordinator kicks off revitalisation of community centre One of the first things Cathy Condon did when she stepped into the role of the centre coordinator at BADYACC was look at ways of ‘sprucing’ up the look of the centre, which is located adjacent to the Beerwah Skate Park. And with her background, as a visual artist and art therapist, it’s not surprising a makeover was on the cards. And so last weekend, a team volunteers gathered at the centre, paint brushes in hand, ready to work some magic. Led by members of the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed and ably assisted and supported by staff from IFYS (Integrated Family and Youth Service), which operate the centre, as well as students from the centre’s Flexi-School and other local volunteers, the transformation included a fresh coat of paint and some general maintenance and gardening.
The project was made possible thanks to Community Recycling Inc, who donated all the paint. But that is just the start of it according to Cathy, who says the physical transformation is part of a process of renewal and growth for the centre, which has been in operation since 1997. “The original purpose of the facility was to link the community, and that is exactly what I want to get back to,” she said. A number of services currently operate out of the centre, including the Flexi-School, which offers an alternative learning environment for students who have disengaged from mainstream schools, Reconnect, an outreach program, Focus, a drug and alcohol program, STEPS, Centrelink and the Hinterland Community Development Officer. Cathy said she would really like to see the centre grow to become a community hub, and is looking
for project partners and sponsors to come on board and help run projects aimed at engaging local youth. “My goal is to bring young people into the centre, particularly those who might be disadvantaged in some way, and provide a range of projects to help them gain skills and build their self esteem in a fun and relaxed environment,” Cathy said. Cathy encourages the community to come down and take a look at what is on offer at the centre, particularly organisations that work with young people, and consider ways to contribute and build collaborative partnerships. “We really need funding to help get some projects off the ground, with the first one targeting crime prevention.” Contact Cathy at the centre on 5494 0505. The memorial consists of a great central tower flanked by winged walls carrying panels commemorating the 10,767 Australians who died in France during World War I and who have no known grave. Many floral tributes remained at the site following the ANZAC Day service.
Pictured are members of Bankfoot House committee, Robyn Gillinder, Elaine Reeves, Ethel Burgess, Helen Page and Ron Gillinder, who visited the site as part of their broader tour of the Western Front battlefields.

Beerwah State High launches Personal Best
Sweet stuff for super mum
Earlier this month a special parade was held to launch Beerwah State High’s Personal Best program. The parade was a wonderful experience with performances by Bree Phipps and her rock band and the Junior Dance company. A highlight of the event was the special guest appearance of the PB Croc who encouraged all to strive to do their personal best no matter what the activity – be it on the sporting field, in cultural pursuits, academically or in the day to day dealings and relationships we have with each other. The parade also provided an opportunity to officially congratulate the 122 students who have been awarded a Gold Card due to their exemplary effort and behaviour results on their report cards. This is a fantastic effort and acknowledges over 12 per cent of the school population. The challenge is now out there for others to rise to the occasion and strive to be the best they can be. Head of Student Services, Mr Boris Croft, also publically acknowledged the 24 local businesses who have sponsored our Gold Card program by providing incentives for students. Beerwah State High school is committed to providing positive opportunities for students to be able to be successful.
The Sunday before last was Mother’s Day and mothers all around Australia celebrated the day when it's all about being mums. Cosy mornings with breakfast in bed and late sleep-ins sound like a dream, but on Mother’s Day it becomes reality! It was great that Sunday was lovely and sunny (I'm still loving the sun; I'm a bit over rain). I can just imagine all the families going out to the park and setting up for picnics in the lovely warm sun for a great day all about our super dooper mums. For Mother’s Day my family went to Somerset Dam where we met up with relatives. Although we didn't go swimming it was a really nice day. I'm already thinking of planning something elaborate for next Mother’s Day. Maybe a weekend camping with family and friends? Or a shopping spree (my shout of course) or a nice day at the spa. There are so many choices. Although it is still a year away, the approximately 360 days will go in the blink of an eye, so start planning! Personally, I have some super-secret plans brewing but I can’t reveal them here because I have funny feeling that my mum could be reading this column. To all the mothers in the universe I hope you all had a great relaxing, fun, and lovely day. Happy Mother’s Day! (it's a little bit late but still valid, at least I think so... Happy Mother’s Day Mum).
Landsborough students compete in cross country On Friday, May 11, Landsborough State School’s Cross Country Carnival was held. Beautiful autumn weather meant that conditions were perfect for running. It was great to see so many enthusiastic runners on the course. Congratulations to all those who participated from the Preps right through to Year 7’s. The winning sports house was Burgess, however there were also many fantastic individual performances. A big thank you to Miss Duffield for organising the carnival and to the staff, parents and students who helped with manning checkpoints and recording results on the day.

Doing Business
Business Buzz with Vanessa Rumble
Who is looking after your little munchkins?
The iconic Ettamogah Pub has recently received a facelift and has been given a fresh new look that’s hard to miss. The painting of the front of the Pub was in conjunction with refurbishments inside. As well as giving the front of the pub a bit of a spruce up, the kitchen at Bluey’s Bar & Grill has been upgraded and there’s a new TAB downstairs. “The colours of the new paint job are striking to say the least, the man hanging from the side of the pub has also been given a new look keeping with today’s style trends, wearing yellow and orange spotted boxer shorts!” Coffee and Tea Merchants recently opened on Steve Irwin Way. They have excellent coffee and tea, served in beautiful surroundings. Serving locally roasted Ethiopian and Sumatran coffee beans, many flavours of exotic loose leaf tea, such as Organic English Breakfast, Strawberry Fields or Chai Marsala as well as a number of delectable delights and handmade chocolates. It is seriously worth stopping in to meet the friendly staff and see the charming and relaxed garden setting, or snuggle into a nice leather armchair to enjoy your experience. Gorgeous flowers will also be available every Friday, for between $15.00 and $25.00. Andy and Tracey Clare recently sold their business ATC Cabinetmaking and Joinery located in a workshop on Beerwah Parade (behind Custom Curtains and Blinds). After running the business in Beerwah for 7 years they are looking forward to taking on new challenges. New owner Dean Bryant of Peachester has changed the business name to Brymac Furniture and Cabinets and has been busy putting his stamp on the business. He will continue to service the wholesale market that Andy had developed but he is keen to expand the business - you can check out his facebook page.
Little Munchkins Early Learning Centre is a family owned and operated centre. Our Early Learning Centre has a unique atmosphere created by the dedicated educators, local families, the community and most importantly the children who laugh and learn here every day. Our centre is opened 52 weeks of the year and caters for children from 15 months through to school age. High quality education begins with qualified educators and at Little Munchkins, the Director is fully qualified with a large background in various child care experiences. Group Leaders hold Diplomas in Children’s Services (Child Care), or are studying for a Diploma in Community Services (Child Care), and assistants have completed or are studying for their Certificate 3 in Community Services (Child Care). We understand that the best way for a child to learn is through discovery, and this is best achieved by providing ample opportunities for extended play. Our Educators incorporate the Early Learning Years Frame work into our daily learning journeys, a foundation for ensuring that children in all early childhood education and care settings experience quality teaching and learning. It has a specific emphasis on play-based learning and recognises the importance of communication and language (including early literacy and numeracy) and social and emotional development. Fees are set on a daily basis depending on age of the child and which room they will be attending. We offer holiday rates to parents who give enough notice which many centres on the coast don’t! So please feel free to give us a call on 5494 7325 or email us on little. munchkins@bigpond.com. We look forward to chatting to you soon!

Community Group Updates Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club Contributed by Michael Whiticker
Bob Dylan says thank you. Well he didn’t really, but the Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club provided him with the opportunity by celebrating his music at its session this last Thursday - being 50 years since his first album, and what a special event it was! The general comment was that it was the best night we’ve had and certainly a healthy crowd turned up to enjoy Dylan’s music. Performers included Tommy Leonard, Peter G, Ian Williams, Gary Josland, Michael Dawson, Doug Pullen, Paul Fagan, Beat Moving (Ralph, Brian and Paul), two Johns, James, Ray and yours truly. There were a few newcomers and a highlight amongst them for me was Tommy Leonard – appearing at the Musos for the first time, and what a wonderful find he is. Andrew Pattison
– founder of the Troubadour music venue in Melbourne, has said of Tommy, “If I could choose only one musician in the world to play for me in my lounge room it would be Tommy”. High praise indeed but certainly warranted as Tommy has a beautiful voice and is an impressive finger style guitarist. Here once again was a musician during whose performance you could have heard a pin drop in the room. We welcome Tommy back anytime. Other newcomers included a fine electric guitarist – John, who accompanied Peter G’s excellent set, another John who sang for us accompanied by a solid up-and-coming drummer in 14-year-old James, and a raunchy harmonica player – Ray. The Sports Club donated two prizes this week which went to Doug Pullen and Michael Dawson as a thank you for their commitment and regular performances with us.

Climbing the Glass Mountains
The fascinating task of recalling history knows no bounds and seemingly unrelated events often can be woven into a connected historical record. A 100 year old photograph came to hand recently. A familiar landscape, the positioning of the mountains and the authenticity of the caption was verified; August Aubry’s dwelling on Mount Blanc overlooking his beloved Glass Mountains by the photographer, Englishman, George Rowley.
GMAN’s native plant sale aids Koala Rescue Group
At the recent Sunday market at the Glass House Mountains School, GMAN native plant nursery volunteers were on hand to raise funds
to support the work of twins Murray and Ray Chambers, who selflessly give of their time and without financial support, to help rescue injured Koalas. Their work inspired GMAN members to dedicate their takings from the day to assist the twins to purchase a new rescue vehicle. A total of $200.00 was raised due to the support of the local community. Assisting GMAN was Shirley from Koala Action Pine Rivers Inc. Shirley was able to educate the public on the plight of the Koala who after a long and hard battle by conservationists, has finally been listed as a vulnerable species. The demise of the Koala, a national icon of this country, has recently hit the headlines across the world. The highly esteemed magazine, National Geographic featured an article and photography by world recognised conservationist and photographer, Joel Sartore, in the most recent edition. Included in the photographs are local koala rescues and sadly graphic pictures of the number of koalas dying weekly in S E Queensland. To view this article simply ‘google’ National Geographic Koalas, or Joel Sartore Koalas.

Club History - Glasshouse Country TM started with a demonstration meeting on June 28, 1994 at the Beerwah High School, under the sponsorship of the Caloundra TM Club. It was chartered on June 29, 1995 with guest speaker, Ric Nattrass, of media fame attending. The meeting was well attended by members of other clubs. Disbanding on December 11, 2001, the club rose from the ashes and gained the Phoenix Award on March 14 2002 as a day time club, now meeting in the hall of the Church on the Rise, Peachester Road every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 9.00am for a 9.15am start to 11.30am. The Club presents a wonderful bulletin named ‘The Echo’. Visit this inspirational club one day and find out what the word Echo actually means. We'd love to welcome you. Like to know more? Call us on 5496 9855. GCNews welcomes contributions from all local community groups and service clubs. Please note the editorial deadline is 12.00noon each Friday. If you have missed the deadline your article will not be considered for the next edition. For articles that do meet the deadline every effort will be made to include them in the next edition. However if we receive more contributions than we have space available your contribution may be held over until the following week. Priority is given to articles / notices that are time specific. 12

Beerwah CWA Contributed by Del Davis
A busy month for May, with fabric painting lessons, a branch meeting and an interesting International Day. The branch meeting that commences at 9.00am will be over and a cuppa consumed by then. A great day is planned at the Peachester Hall on May 29 when the guest speaker will enlighten all about the country of Chili. Varied dishes that are eaten in Chili will compliment the day. It is asked if intending visitors will let Del know for catering purposes, phone 5439 0289. The monthly Hoy (bingo that uses cards instead of numbers) is running smoothly with lots of fun and the grocery prizes are well accepted. The next morning will be Tuesday, June 1 at 9.00am. Morning Tea supplied. The philosophy of GCNews is to ensure community groups and other regular contributors have equal opportunity in accessing the free community space made available each week. Please keep contributions to a maximum of 250 words, or 200 words and a photo. Submissions may be edited if too lengthy and in accordance with the GCNews style guide. Was it the shingle roof, the gun holes in the walls or the uninterrupted panorama that captured his interest? And what brought George to Peachester in the early part of last century? Nearby Candle Mountain Guest house had become a popular retreat for intrepid bush walkers and nature lovers and it is possible George spent a weekend there. In 1908 George Rowley had married Mary Isabel Clark, elder sister of the five Clark girls, daughters of well-known Scottish born Brisbane manufacturer Alexander Clark. Clark’s sisters Jenny, Etty and Sara were adventure seekers. Together with William Fraser, an engineering student and family friend and their brother in law George, described as an irrepressible photographer attracted to the Glass Mountains group, they had climbed Mount Beerwah with ease. Their sights were then set on Tibrogargan and the precipitous cliffs of Coonowrin. On the weekend of Empire Day, 1912 the quartet set out on bicycles bound for Grigor’s Bankfoot House on Old Gympie Road, a challenging trip of some seven hours. Younger sister Sara arrived by train and the following day, in company with local man Jack Sairs, a successful ascent of Tibrogargan was made. The Queenslander of June 8, 1912 records their adventure in intimate detail. At the time readers’ awe and admiration would have been compounded by the climbers’ chronicle of their grand view from the summit. ‘Far away to the south is the Macpherson Range and on the west the view extends to the Cooyar. On the north one can see to the Blackall as far as Mount Cooroy with Moreton and Stradbroke Islands in comparative proximity in the east.’ Buoyed on by their achievement, and with William Fraser piloting the climbing party, they then successfully tackled Coonowrin. This astonishing feat saw the Clark girls acclaimed as the first females to reach its summit. George's photography of the events graced the pages of newspapers nationwide. Little wonder he later named the Rowley family home in South Brisbane ‘Coonowrin’. More of this historic event will be celebrated at Bankfoot House Open Day on Sunday, May 27, 2012, where amidst the Centenary celebrations, descendants of the Clark sisters will be special guests. www.gcnews.com.au

Wednesday, May 30 Landsborough’s biggest morning tea, Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall, from 9.00am. Hosted by the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Management Committee. CCQ Regional Fundraising Coordinator Jodi Durkin said funds raised through morning teas are invested in vital cancer research, education programs and patient support services, such as their five accommodation facilities across the state and operating the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20. “Each year more than 21,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer and sadly, around 7,500 Queenslanders will die from the disease,” she said. “Whether it’s a simple morning tea with workmates, a sophisticated high tea with friends or a school bake sale, you’ll be helping the one in two Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85.” Cancer Council Queensland is an independent, community-based charity. The achievements of Cancer Council Queensland are made possible by the generosity of Queenslanders.

Celebrate 350 years of heritage
The Anglican ‘Book of Common Prayer’, along with ‘The King James Bible’ and the works of William Shakespeare have, more than any other works, shaped the literary, cultural and religious lives of the English speaking peoples of the world. The original BCP, published in 1549 during the reign of Henry’s son King Edward VI was the product of the English Reformation following the English Church’s separation from Rome. The work of 1549, penned by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, was the first prayer book to include the complete forms of service for daily and Sunday worship in the English language. It contained Morning and Evening Prayer, the Litany, Holy Communion (or the Lord’s Supper) as well as occasional services in full. After the counter reformation of Queen Mary (bloody Mary) and her attempt to return England to Roman Catholicism, Queen Elizabeth I reintroduced the ‘Book of Common Prayer’ in 1552 with a few modifications.
Stargazer Astrology June 2012 The Foundation aims to raise $200,000 during the Lavender Appeal towards supporting patients and their families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. The CEO of the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland, Bill Petch said the funds raised will go towards easing the inevitable financial and emotional burdens that a blood cancer diagnosis brings. “Many people don’t realise that not only do patients face the difficulties of treating their blood cancer but they often have to leave their home, jobs and family members to be near a major hospital in Brisbane or Townsville. “The Foundation does what it can to accommodate the patient and their carer in our villages with specialised staff on hand to help them with counselling, education and practical matters. “The Lavender Appeal is one of the simplest ways for the community to help us to assist these patients as they focus on their treatment. “With 2,000 Queenslanders expected to be diagnosed with a blood cancer this year, our services continue to be stretched to the limit.” As a not-for-profit organisation, the Leukaemia Foundation relies on regular fundraisers as well as the generous support of individuals, community organisations and businesses to continue vital medical research and expand its services. After the devastation and tumult of the puritan uprising and English Civil Wars, the restoration of the Monarchy with King Charles II in 1661 saw the re-establishment of the ‘Church of England’ and the authorisation of the 1662 ‘Book of Common Prayer’. While Anglican Worship has adapted to many cultures, languages and times, this edition has remained the touch stone of Anglican worship around the globe. On Sunday, June 10, the Anglican Parish of Caloundra-Glasshouse Country will celebrate the 350th anniversary of the 1662 ‘Book of Common Prayer’ with a special 1662 ‘Lord’s Supper’ followed by Prayer Book display and celebratory Morning Tea at 9.00am, at the Mary MacKillop Centre, Peachester Road Beerwah. All members of the community are welcome! For further information please contact The Revd Br John Stevenson OGS on 5439 9130.

The Venus transit of the Sun There is so much astrological activity in Gemini at the moment (including the solar eclipse last month) that some very major changes are indicated – the Venus transit of the Sun in Gemini invites us to communicate with more heart, connecting at a deeper core level, while Jupiter’s move into Gemini is likely to bring a much stronger focus on ethics in the media, as demonstrated in the ongoing UK enquiry into the Murdoch media empire which is revealing many unethical practices such as phone hacking and undue political influence. The lunar eclipse Full Moon in Sagittarius on Monday, June 4 emphasises the difference between talk and action, with the Full Moon in Sagittarius longing to explore and find the deeper meaning in life. The Venus transit of the Sun takes place on Wednesday, June 6, visible in eastern Australia from 8.16am to 2.44pm (exact midpoint at 11.30am). This is a very rare occurrence, taking place every 121 years, with Venus appearing as a small moving ‘beauty spot’ across the face of the Sun. The New Moon falls in Gemini on Wednesday, June 20, exact at 1.02am, followed by the Winter Solstice on Thursday, June 21. This is the shortest day of the year (and longest night) in the southern hemisphere, as the Sun reaches its northernmost point. World-changing events are likely to be unfolding over the next four years as Uranus and Pluto make a series of challenging contacts to one another, likely to bring revolutions and the crashing down of old empires, including media empires! We’ve already seen indications of this in the banking sector. The first contact is exact on June 24, so fasten your seat belts! Some people are being affected at a personal level by this degree of upheaval – if this is you, come and see me for an astrology session to gain insight and clarity! copyright © 2012 Chirone Witsen All rights reserved Chirone is a counselling astrologer based at Mt Mellum near Landsborough. Face lift for community centre
Last Sunday, volunteers from Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed joined with staff and Flexi-School students and other willing hands to give the Beerwah Community Centre (BADYACC) a facelift. With paint generously donated by Community Recycling Inc, the volunteers set about repainting the interior and tidying up the exterior of the centre, which was in desperate need of some TLC. New coordinator Cathy Condon is keen to see the centre become a community hub, and has plenty of exciting projects in the pipeline. See the story on page 5.

It has been a wild ride and my immense privilege to be primary co-ordinator for this year’s Expo. At Static Wave we’ve been proud to lend out our design, marketing and web expertise in support of a very worthy cause. In conjunction with Rotary of GHM, the GHM Chamber of Commerce and our major sponsors Community Recycling and GCNews, I think we’ve truly put together an excellent family event with something for everyone. Again I’d like to express how excited we all are with the ongoing growth and development of this event, and our continual expansion into the fields of health and wellbeing plus sustainability and the environment, while keeping a significant focus on the gardening aspect of the Expo. A big thank you to all involved with this project, and I trust you’ll all have a great day this Sunday!
A word from our sponsor Since the very first Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Gardening Expo, Community Recycling has always been pleased to support this important community event. COMMUNITY RECYCLING INC We know how many keen gardeners and locals who are passionate about the environment that live in and love Glasshouse Country. We also know how important it is for these locals that they have access to good mulch - we make and sell plenty of it here. Not only does mulch save water and feed the garden, but it can also help create a neat and tidy look to an otherwise messy garden. We turn our local communities green waste into rich and fertile organic mulch. Our mulch is not just any old mulch. It’s been treated and processed to a high standard to ensure that as much as possible, the mulch you put on your garden doesn’t bring undesirable weeds as well. Firstly the green waste is shredded, then piled and left to generate its own heat. It’s this heat that is the key to killing off weed seeds and other possible pests and diseases. The temperature gets to over 55 degrees Celsius for a number of days, which then sterilises the weed seeds. You can be confident that the mulch from the Resource Recovery Centre has been cooked to ensure it’s clean and green.

Election antics disappointing It appears to me that the 2012 council election has bought out the nasty side of human nature in the race to win at all costs. Accusations of bribes, or was it just a suggestion of help if the candidate agreed to step aside? Has the true meaning of being the employee of the ratepayer been lost in the race for power, recognition and a healthy salary? Election Day at Landsborough, limited parking and raining, a trailer covered in election signs of a male candidate was parked in the first space near the entry gate and was there all day. Again in the race to win recognition and votes, no thought was given to how inconvenient this was to the voter. A new Sunshine Coast Council has been sworn in, do we dare to hope for change, responsible fiscal policy, councillors who listen to the needs of the community and act on those needs? To the new Division 1 councillor, Landsborough is part of your division, in the past four years we have been the forgotten town. Please do not let this trend continue. Pensioner Landsborough

Pick up your rubbish!
$5.99kg 2kg lots
I'm very concerned about the amount of rubbish left lying around at the Beerwah skate park. People take their food to the skate park and just dump it, even though there is a bin there. The rubbish is not a very safe environment for animals and not a good look for the skate park. I think if people just pick up their rubbish, it would improve Beerwah’s appearance. Let’s help make Beerwah a better place. Bailey Townsend Age 13, Beerwah State High student
Ed’s Note In response to Peter Gawith 'What's going on' GCNews May 16 After passing on Peter’s concerns to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, we received the following response from the Director Forest Products, Geoff Kent. He said following recent heavy rainfall in the area, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has felled trees across the access road to Luttons State Forest to limit 4WD and motorcycle access and prevent damage to the recently graded road. He said the road is known locally as Range Road and turns into Mount Beerwah Road, and that the grading work has been carried out in preparation for routine native forest harvesting. “When the surrounding forest area has dried sufficiently, the road maintenance work will be completed and forest harvesting will commence. All logs which are currently blocking the road will be removed and utilised,” he said. Hardwood trees with a diameter at breast height of more than 40 cm, are harvested for sawlogs, poles and girders, and processed at local sawmills. He said harvesting is consistent with the South East Queensland Forests Agreement (SEQFA), signed off by the Queensland Government, the timber industry and conservation stakeholders in 1999. www.gcnews.com.au
Real Estate and Financial Guide Demand for rental properties continues to strengthen with vacancy rates tightening across the State, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). The REIQ March residential vacancy rates show the majority of regions experiencing strong demand from tenants with vacancy rates in many areas now below three per cent. A vacancy rate of three per cent is generally considered to be the equilibrium point of supply and demand. REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said the tightening rental market was a result of the slower sales market over the past 12 months in particular. “Until very recently, we had many potential first home buyers and investors sitting on the sidelines while our market and economy recovered from the natural disasters last year, which has put pressure on our rental market,” Mr Kardash said.
“However, this pent-up demand is now starting to dissipate with the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data showing increasing numbers of investors and first-timers coming back into the market.” ABS lending finance figures for February showed the number of Queensland investors was up significantly compared to the same period last year. The data also showed that demand from firsthome buyers and owner-occupiers was also starting to increase. “This more robust level of investor demand is good news for our rental market given more investors means more investment stock for renters to choose from,” Mr Kardash said.

A new study into the relocation trends of ‘sea changers’ and ‘tree changers’ on the Sunshine Coast is being undertaken by the University of the Sunshine Coast. USC Lecturer in Psychology Dr Prudence Millear said the research would consider why people move here and choose to either stay or move on, and whether social support plays a role in that decision. “I am interested in talking to people who relocated to the Sunshine Coast and have stayed on for work or to retire, as well as those who moved here but left to either work or retire elsewhere,” Dr Millear said. “One of the biggest challenges will be tracking down those residents who have moved to another town or city, whether that be interstate or globally. We want to know why they felt they had to move away and whether their social needs weren’t being met. “For example, they may have come here to retire only to discover that the lifestyle wasn’t what they expected, or they may have had to move away for work or to look after ageing relatives.” Dr Millear said the research findings could be used by local government and community groups to establish support networks for migrants. “We will be asking the research participants how easily they made friends when they moved here, and where they went to meet these new people,” she said. “If we discover something particularly useful for connecting people, like a sporting organisation or surf lifesaving club, then perhaps that information could be made available to the public on a government website for example.” For more information about the survey email pmillear@usc.edu.au

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church The other day the Glass House State School had their cross-country run. This was to be my son Wil’s first big running race as he has started Prep this year. The Preppies lined up, the starter explained how to listen for the gun and take your mark then, BANG! After the initial shock of the noise and the realisation that it was time to run, they headed off down straight, round the oval, past the edge and down the a bank where they disappeared into the trees. Now a quarter of the way there, Wil was about middle of the pack, and steaming ahead with a determination that I’ve only seen him have if he was trying to beat his older sister to a plate of ice cream or something. Then, after another minute or two, his head emerged, to my amazement three or four places ahead. I jumped to my feet and ran alongside him as he finished in fifth place over the line. I was so proud, mainly because I thought his legs were too short for being a good runner and quite frankly I’d thought that he wouldn’t be too bothered to push himself to run as hard as he did. When he got off the bus that afternoon, we all
celebrated how well the kids did that morning, Lucy (Year 3) ended up with a third and Wil had received a ‘Well Done’ ribbon for finishing well. I told him how impressed I was with his effort and he replied, “yeah, pretty good hey dad, and the best thing was, I was able to knock over three boys when we were going through the trees!” And so began another life lesson on what it means to be fair rather than win at the cost of hurting others. When two followers of Jesus, James and John, asked to be seated at his right and left side when he sat on the throne in his kingdom, Jesus again pointed out that our natural way of thinking is upside-down to Gods. Jesus called them together and said, ‘you know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’ God Bless and see you in Church this weekend.

Down & Dirty with Brownie

The numbers game
Now’s a great time to think about starting some landscaping projects. The first place many people have to start when developing a garden, is to actually make the garden beds from scratch. And with most of our local soils, it’s a good idea to raise the garden bed above the existing soil level, to create good drainage and give the plants some reasonable soil to sink their roots into. This generally involves buying in soil and mulch. How do you work out how much to order – especially when most landscaping companies sell it by the cubic metre? The easiest way is to draw a sketch of your garden beds, make some measurements of the length and width, and take that to one of our landscaping suppliers (like Moroneys at Beerwah or Savage at Landsborough). They’ll be more than happy to work everything out for you. If you’d like to do it yourself, here’s a simple high school refresher to help in your calculations. Working out volumes of mulch and soil becomes very easy using these formulas (especially with a calculator!) Area of a square (and rectangle): l x w (l = length; w = width)
Circumference of a circle: π x d (π = pi, which = 3.14; d = diameter) Area of a circle: π x r2 (r = radius = half the diameter) Area of a triangle: (b x h)/2 (b = base; h = height) You can use a combination of mostly squares, rectangles and circles to work out the area of garden beds on your design. These formulas only give you the area, the other variable in working out volume is depth. And depth depends on what you need. And remember that your average garden soil mix will compact down a little with time, so allow an extra 15 per cent to compensate. So to work out how much soil to order for your garden beds, work out the area of all the beds. You then multiply the area by the depth, plus 15 per cent. Make sure you use all the same units of measurement – it’s best to convert everything to metres – and be careful with decimal points. 10mm = 1cm = 0.01m 100mm = 10cm = 0.1m 1000mm = 100cm = 1m Mulch is best laid at about a 7cm thickness, so you multiply the garden bed area by 7cm – again make sure you keep the units the same. Don’t multiply centimetres by metres.
Let’s look at an example. If all the areas of garden bed give a total of about 180m2, then the volume of mulch required will be 180 x 0.07 = 12.6 cubic metres. But when ordering you would probably go up to 14 or maybe even 15 - to round it off. It’s always better to order slightly too much than slightly too little. A formula that is very useful when looking to fill a pot plant is the volume of a cylinder, as you will be able to work out how much potting mix to purchase. Volume of a cylinder: π x r2 x h It’s also handy to know how much a cubic metre weighs – especially if you’re taking it away yourself in a trailer or in the back of a ute. 1 cubic metre top soil = 1.4 tonnes 1 cubic metre garden soil = 1.2 tonnes 1 cubic metre wood chip = 0.4 tonnes 1 cubic metre bark = 0.3 tonnes 1 cubic metre leaf/chip forest blend = 0.3 tonnes 1 cubic metre brickies sand = 1.45 tonnes 1 cubic metre coarse river sand = 1.5 tonnes 1 cubic metre gravel = 1.5 tonnes 1 cubic metre deco-granite = 1.3 tonnes 30L bag of potting mix = 15kg Thank you for your attention. Class dismissed.

Make a note in your diary for May 27, as the only place to be next Saturday will be at the Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Expo in the Beerwah Community Hall and Turner Park (next to the library). If you went along to last year’s expo, you’ll remember the great displays, speakers and competitions that made the day so successful. And if you’ve never been, well this year is definitely one not to miss. The chance to listen, meet and learn from special guest speaker Annette McFarlane (ABC radio and gardening writer) can’t be missed. Don’t miss the plant clinic, were Annette will
answer your problems and questions. Bring along your weird and wonderful garden plants or your pest and weed problems; Annette will have all the answers for you. One of the great features of last years expo was the diverse and captivating range of information displays. This year will be even better. Most displays will have specialist products, plants and gifts on sale, as well as interesting information. Local community gardening and environment groups, Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare, Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society, Glasshouse Country Orchid Society, Sunshine Coast Environment Council, Wildlife Preservation Society of QLD and the Wildlife Volunteers Association will all be there, showcasing their great range of products, books, plants, services, projects, knowledge and members. The award winning Community Recycling Inc. from Beerwah will have their recycled garden ‘objets d’art’ masterpieces on display. Trade displays from local businesses and groups will give you some great ideas and products to help you become a sustainable gardener. Have I mentioned prize draws, live music, face painting, jumping castle, farm animals and storytelling? All that walking and talking will probably give you a might appetite – and so to stave off starvation, the food court, Rotary and more will be selling fresh food and drinks, with freshly ground and brewed coffee served from the Red Rocket Espresso van. The best thing about the garden expo – is that it’s an event put on by local people and groups to help local gardeners and residents. And that’s something well worth supporting. Glasshouse Country Garden Expo. Beerwah Community Hall (next to the library) and Turner Park. Sunday, May 27 – 9.00am to 4.00pm. Entry $5.00, under-16’s free. Bring your money with you and I’ll see you there.

Funding success for Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club Contributed by Jill Forster
Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club recently purchased a new pitch cover and Jugs Bowling Machine thanks to funding support from the Sunshine Coast Council Grants Program. The pitch cover will be larger than the one presently being used. Because a larger area would be covered this would provide a much safer and higher quality playing surface and prevent both junior and senior games from being cancelled due to inclement weather. The bowling machine will be an extremely important training aid for training sessions for all our members and other members of the community who use our facilities. By improving players’ skills, it would create more confident and enthusiastic players and with cricket being a team sport, would also lift the team moral and generate more successful outcomes. These players would be more inclined to continue playing cricket.
Junior soccer carnival success
The Under 6 carnival held at Glasshouse Sports grounds was a huge success last weekend thanks to the weather and also to all our volunteers helping on the day for field set up, barbeques, line marking, registration and parking. The day went smoothly and the kids all had a fantastic time. Special thanks to Jo Black who organised the event and spent the day at Glasshouse Sports Grounds, even though her kids were playing at other fields on the Sunshine Coast. Your time is very much appreciated by the club. Please check our facebook page – Beerwahglasshouseunitedsoccerclub for Soccer Camp information being held over the school holidays at Caboolture Grounds and any other updates and information.

On 15th. May the winners were Ray Bryant, Lloyd Walker and Ede Clark. On Thursday 17th we set off for our bus trip to Warwick. 41 bowlers from all over the coast enjoyed beautiful weather and great friendship at Allora, Warwick East and Killarney. Mr Feelings experimented with a new grip and whilst he had a little luck on the first day he came back to earth on Sunday. He still thinks he has bragging rights but wait for next year. Thanks to all for their help and we will start on next year soon. www.gcnews.com.au

Two women were out for a Saturday stroll. One had a doberman and the other, a chihuahua. As they walked down the street, the one with the doberman said to her friend, "let's go over to that bar for a drink." The lady with the chihuahua said, "we can't go in there. We've got dogs with us." The one with the doberman said, "just watch, and do as I do." They walked over to the bar and the one with the doberman put on a pair of dark glasses and started to walk in. The bouncer at the door said, "sorry, lady, no pets allowed." The woman with the doberman said, "you don't understand. This is my seeing-eye dog." The bouncer said, "a doberman?"

The woman said, "yes, they're using them now. They're very good." The bouncer said, "ok, come on in." The lady with the chihuahua thought that convincing him that a chihuahua was a seeingeye dog may be a bit more difficult, but thought, "what the heck," so she put on her dark glasses and started to walk. Once again the bouncer said, "sorry, lady, no pets allowed." The woman said, "you don't understand. This is my seeing-eye dog." The bouncer said, "a chihuahua?" The woman with the chihuahua said, "a chihuahua? They gave me a BLOODY chihuahua?!"
