Hi Everyone...

on the Cover

Last week we went to the annual Maleny Rotary Community Grants Dinner which was a great night out, and I am sure that it wasn’t just because most of the club’s guests on the night were receiving grants for their organisations. Everyone certainly did seem to enjoy themselves. The recently re-opened Tranquil Park at Maleny looked great, the meals they served definitely impressed and there was even some wonderful live entertainment. However, for me the highlight was seeing the cheque presented to the representative who came along from the Maleny State School, a lovely Year Four student named William McCallum. The event organisers rearranged the presentation schedule to allow for William to receive the first presentation so he could then head off home. However, William generously offered to wait until he had had his dessert and, in a room full of adults (some eight times his age), he happily took the microphone and thanked the Rotary Club for their generosity. While everyone took the opportunity to acknowledge the support Rotary had shown their group, it was really nice that someone so young set such a good tone for the speeches. Regards,

Look out, Kenny’s Angels are raising dust and dollars

By Sonia Clark The Great Endeavour Rally will this year be steering entrants towards an eventful eight-day southern safari adventure. Four local business women who also happen to be great mates, Amanda Smyth (Wild Horse Turf), Susan Ellwood (Grandview at Fraser), Sonia Heilig (Go Turf) and Michelle Putzolu (Drillsure Geotechnical), have decided to put a rally team together for the hugely popular charity motoring event. Departing the Gold Coast on June 15 and finishing in Yamba on June 23, the rally will take in a scenic detour through Dubbo and the New South Wales western plains. The first-time team entry who have dubbed themselves ‘Kenny’s Angels’ are already well on their way to achieving their minimum fundraising goal pledge of $3,500. The catchy name was established a few years back when the four friends saw Kenny Rogers at the Gympie Muster, which led the country music fans to refer to themselves as ‘Kenny’s Angels’. The ladies are entering the ‘all female’ category and are fully committed to raising “dust and dollars”. Believing the work of the Endeavour foundation to be priceless, the four mums love that the charity helps people with disabilities live more fulfilling lives and have been busy seeking sponsorship and fundraising opportunities since late last year.

The barefoot bowls afternoon will kick off at 2pm and will include barefoot bowling and some awesome raffles. There is a fantastic major prize of a week’s holiday at Fraser Island to be won on the day, and the event promises to be heaps of fun as well as raise funds for a great cause. Club Glass House is generously donating the bowling green fees to the Endeavour Foundation, so all proceeds will go to the charity. Participants are encouraged to wear their “loudest” shirt on the day - with prizes for the shirt that “screams the loudest”. Tickets are only $10 and team registration is available by emailing Amanda at amanda@ wildhorseturf.com.au. Having renovated kitchens before we had a pretty strong vision of what we would like in our new kitchen. Being self-professed foodies, the kitchen space is very important to us. Kev sat with us and listened and gave us exactly what we wanted. From including our wine fridge, to giving us all the customised storage space we needed (and more), he made it all happen. Putting the kitchen together was seamless and all the different tradies, plus Kev’s team, worked efficiently and professionally. Even after living with the kitchen for eight months we keep realising what a quality-built kitchen we have. Nevon and Linda, Landsborough

Progress on Landsborough development By Greg Brown Following on from the GC&M News story (edition April 18) about the plans for a considerable multi-unit and boarding room-style development in Maleny Street, Landsborough, community unease at the proposal has been gaining momentum. The development on the 4,703 sq.m residential block on the corner of Maleny Street and Gympie Street South, Landsborough will see 23 two and three-bedroom units, three one-bedroom units and ten “rooming accommodation” communal living spaces, totalling 63 bedrooms in its entirety. Since the initial GC&M News story, locals have been raising their concern, both in the letters pages and directly to Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, calling on the local councillor to stand up for them and fight to retain the style of community for Landsborough which the town plan describes… that of heritage, character and modern country living. It appears that the steady stream of letters and emails to the editor, as well as to Cr Baberowski and Council’s planning staff, has resulted in a realisation of just how much apprehension there is in the community. In the Letters page of GC&M News last week, Cr Baberowski committed to “… defend your right and my right to challenge any development that puts pure financial gain ahead of what’s best for our townships”.

As part of this commitment, Cr Baberowski has advised GC&M News that last week he sought an urgent meeting with those putting forward the development in Landsborough. At the councillor’s request, the developers met with him and council's planning officer last Friday. Cr Baberowski said the aim of the meeting was to make sure the developers understood the strength and depth of both his and the community concerns. “I also wanted to recommend to them that they meet with the local media and the community to go through each concern,” he said. “They did listen and the meeting resulted in their agreement to a discussion with GC&M News and to meet a delegation from the Landsborough community. “I will use the feedback from individual community members and local organisations to compile a representative group and, in collaboration with the local media, will keep everyone informed as to what the outcomes are,” he said. GC&M News will continue to report on this and other development proposals where the community has an interest in remaining informed and provide you with a voice to challenge aspects which you feel may not be right for your town.

Maleny stands up against domestic and family violence

By Senior Constable Kelly O'Brien Members of the community came together to stand up against violence last Thursday as part of ‘Say No to Domestic and Family Violence’ month. The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre called and the community responded by showing their support in a gathering at Tesch Park to honour those who have lost their lives as a result of domestic and family violence. Domestic violence advocates including the Neighbourhood Centre and the Queensland Police provided guest speakers to address the community. Flowers were also laid in honour of those victims to domestic and family violence in 2018. Community Choir members paid tribute by singing a collection of songs emphasising that as a victim “you are not alone”. Police reinforced that through collective efforts, we will embed respectful relationships and a zero tolerance approach to domestic and family violence throughout the community so that everyone, everywhere, feels safe, supported and protected. The call to action encourages anyone who is concerned about someone they know to call DVConnect (Womensline on 1800 811 811 or Mensline on 1800 600 636) for confidential advice on how to keep them safe. This month the Queensland Government is calling on the community to “do something” against domestic violence. To find out more, visit https://campaigns.premiers.qld.gov.au/dosomething.

Beerburrum township to connect to national parks

Residents of Beerburrum are invited to come along to a public information session this Thursday, May 24, to discuss Sunshine Coast Council’s plans to develop basic trailhead facilities in Beerburrum, in partnership with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said council was developing a draft concept landscape plan to guide detailed planning for Parrot Park Bushland Reserve’s current parking area to allow it to function as a new southern trailhead for the Glass House Mountains National Park. The concept plan aims to inform opportunities for improvements and enhance the site’s attractiveness to visitors to the region and improve access to the trail network. It will also determine the recreation opportunities and constraints of the site while reflecting the community’s vision and priorities for the future of the Beerburrum township. “These works are focused on connecting the township to the national parks in a more effective way, and to connect the trails to the rail line to provide ‘rail to trail’ functionality for the Glass House Mountains region,” Cr Baberowski said. Community members will have the opportunity to view the draft concept plan and receive information about the upcoming works at this Thursday’s information session at Beerburrum Community Hall from 5pm. Local residents can also share their views by visiting council’s website and making a submission. The community feedback will then inform a final concept landscape plan which will be released to the community in July. Submissions close on Sunday June 24. For more information and to give your feedback, go to haveyoursay. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/beerburrum-trail-head-concept.

Maleny Show entertainment guide

By Sonia Clark With just over a week to go the excitement is building for the 2018 Maleny Show taking place on Friday June 1 and Saturday June 2. There is so much happening across the two days that this year the Maleny Show Society has decided to launch a separate ‘lift-out’ entertainment guide. This handy foldable guide provides an easy to access rundown of what’s happening daily at the show, and best of all you can bring your copy along on the day to help plan your schedule. Show Secretary Lois White said: “We are excited to be releasing our first ever ‘lift-out’ entertainment guide. "We’ve broken the guide down into sections for the morning, afternoon and evening so families and visitors can see exactly what’s on and easily plan when to come to best suit their needs.” Be sure to grab your copy out of next week’s edition of GC&M News as they will be inserted into the paper just in time for the show. As well as containing the daily schedule, the guide has an easy-to-read layout and map of the show along with suggested show highlights. The Friday night fireworks (from 7pm) are always a hugely popular drawcard as well as the main arena skydivers earlier in the day (from 2.30pm). Saturday night sees the return of the rodeo and the day features the everpopular vintage car and ute display on the entertainment oval. Once again this year they will also be providing the ‘park and ride’ bus shuttle service from 8am until late. Show visitors can utilise off site parking at the Maleny Pioneer Village for a gold coin donation and then ride the shuttle bus to and from the show for free. Make sure you grab your entertainment guide and get ready for some good country fun. More details at www.malenyshowsociety.org.au. See you there!

Happy Valley happy with Beef 2018 Happy Valley Droughtmaster Stud Peachester has returned from Beef Week 2018 in Rockhampton after a successful stud cattle judging. Owners Neville and Kathy O’Brien entered four animals in the Droughtmaster judging and entrusted the help of their grandson Hayden Todd and students from Toowoomba’s Downland College to present the stock on their behalf. Hayden is a former student of the college and said it is important to support young people in the beef cattle industry and give them first-hand experience in the stud stock showing. With thirty two individual breeds on show, Droughtmasters was the largest represented breed with 246 head entered in various classes and 21 breeder groups. Happy Valley Roxette was well received by the judge, Rob Sinnamon (Yulgilbar Santa Gertrudis Stud NSW), and was awarded first in the junior heifer 19 months and under 21 months old. Mr Sinnamon said it was the structural soundness, balance and length of body while being a feminine young female that put Roxette at the top of the class. Roxette has been shown by Downlands College since late January in both Queensland and north west New South Wales and has consistently proven herself in the show ring, with multiple wins including a champion ribbon at Toowoomba Royal Show. In the senior female class 30 months and under

Neville and Kathy will next show their stud cattle at the local Maleny Show in early June where they will add a few younger animals to their Beef Week show team. Neville said: “We are looking forward to supporting the local show as we have the students at Downlands College.”

Update with Nicole Hilton Chamber President

Sharing his hairdressing passion

RAHD Hair and Beauty at Landsborough have thrown their support behind the Australian-based charity Hair Aid and salon co-owner Reece Aberley will be donating his time and expertise to travel to Indonesia later this year as part of the charity’s skill sharing initiative. Hair Aid sends teams of hairdressers to poverty-stricken areas to work directly with people in need. The organisation was set up to give homeless and economically disadvantaged people a way of achieving self sufficiency by teaching them hair cutting skills to allow them to earn a living to feed, clothe and house themselves and their children. The team at RAHD have organised a couple of fundraisers to assist Reece with the travel to Indonesia in September and to cover the associated project costs. Their first fundraiser will be a ‘Ladies Night’ held at their Landsborough salon on Wednesday June 13. RAHD Hair and Beauty will be teaming up with their colour and haircare brand partners Matrix to put together a fun filled evening. The event, from 5.30pm until 7.30pm, will feature some quick hairstyling, a chance to win a swag of cool prizes, massage, haircare, styling tips and more. All proceeds will go towards the Hair Aid venture and participants will also be able to purchase hair care products at half price on the night. Tickets are $25 and bookings are available by contacting the salon on 5439 9029. A High Tea at The Orangery has also been planned for Sunday July 8 at 1.30pm and tickets for this special event are available via Eventbrite. Reece (centre) and his donation tin, with Deb, Tony and Fiona

Did you know that there are approximately 29,000 small businesses on the Sunshine Coast and 88% of them are micro to small businesses with zero to four employees? At our breakfast this month we hosted Amanda Gooddy from Sunshine Coast Council’s Economic Development and Major Projects Department. Amanda spoke about tailored business solutions available for free from the Council and presented results from three participating businesses of increased production and profit as a direct result of these services. Several breakfast guests approached Amanda about the program, which is a great result. Who in business cannot afford to look at these offerings from our Council? If you ever wondered what your local chamber does, this is it. We connect you, keep you updated with the latest business news, initiatives and education programs. We support local events to help our businesses prosper and so much more. Off the back of another amazing Wood Expo we congratulate the event coordinators. CBD businesses prospered with one café completely sold out of food and coffee. It was a great weekend for Maleny with another two events being held the same weekend. Now it’s show time! What a wonderful time of year in Maleny. There is a buzz of excitement in the air. Who doesn’t love a good country show and Maleny does it so well. Great to see some CBD businesses decorated in the country theme for this year’s show, helping build the anticipation amongst the locals and visitors. It’s time to remind your family and friends to come on up for the show. During the month the Chamber initiated the first community collaboration meeting of local service groups. The conversation was about what, as a collaborative, we can achieve to benefit the community. It was a great first meeting and it will expand as I'm sure other clubs will want to get involved. At first, we wanted to see if there was an opportunity here... and I'm happy to say, there is. Everyone was keen to be involved. Once again Maleny is showing how well we work together. Finally, I say good luck to all the small businesses and employees nominated in this year’s Glassies. We will see you at the awards night on the 29th and look forward to presenting the winners their trophy and prize alongside MP Andrew Powell.

Waterpark plans remain on hold The long-awaited waterpark (called ‘Actventure’) in Glenview is still in limbo, with the next sitting of a Planning and Environment Court appeal being set down for July 13. The appeal was brought against the Sunshine Coast Council by the facility developer, Sanad Capital, in response to stormwater charges which they deem as grossly excessive, describing them as “…so unreasonable that no reasonable local government could have imposed it.” In a court order handed down on April 20, the two parties have been ordered by the judge to hand over information to each other that each has requested in the past.

The judge also ordered both parties to “… participate in a without prejudice meeting and act reasonably and genuinely in an attempt to narrow or resolve the issues in dispute.” In mid-April, Sanad suggested that bulk earthworks on the Steve Irwin Way site may begin mid to late May. In a recent announcement, the company disclosed that they have signed an underwriting agreement with an Asian investment group, which will consist of around $30 million equity and a $120 million debt facility to complete Stage One of the $450 million project.

New estate on Coonowrin Road Glass House A small new housing estate in Glass House Mountains will take a step closer with an application lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to split two blocks into three. The land at 21 and 31 Coonowrin Road currently consists of two dwellings and shedding where Jeff Brown Electrical operates from. The plan – submitted by Glasshouse Developments Pty Ltd – is to change the property boundaries to create a 3.23-hectare block at the rear which will then be the subject of a future housing estate application. The house and sheds at 31 Coonowrin Road will be subdivided to form a stand alone block of 5,760sq.m. The development proposal has been made using the ‘FastTrack’ application process, where a decision is made within ten working days of the application being submitted.

Community News Dog Show at Beerwah Sportsground huge success The Beerwah Sportsground recent Dog Shows held by the over three days in April saw the venue host almost 2,000 dogs from approximately 80 different breeds. The Sunshine Coast Kennel Club who are also based at the Beerwah Showgrounds received plenty of positive feedback from exhibitors, judges, visitors and workers at the show in April. Kennel Club member Helen Weil said the event was a great success considering the massive lightning strike that hit the Beerwah Sportsground during the day on Friday, combined with the onoff wet weather and somewhat boggy conditions of the grounds underfoot.

“The Elimbah Krush, who ran Flyball and Updog competitions, were so impressed with the success of their events that they have asked to come back next year,” she said. “The Flyball and Updog competitions were a wonderful attraction for the general visiting public and for those involved with the dog showing events. “We would like to thank all of our sponsors which included Black Hawk dog food, Beerwah Feed and Fodder, Loyalty Pet Treats, Fido’s Pet Products and Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the media coverage provided by Glasshouse Country & Maleny News and Seven News,” Helen said. Police officers recognised

This year, Sunshine Coast Central Rotary hosted the inaugural 2018 Police Officer of the Year award. This is a community award for which police officers receive nominations from within their own community and not from within the Police Service. The attributes of a Police Officer of the Year were: courteous, respectful, genuinely kind and compassionate, a demonstrated devotion to duty, wanting to make a difference, spirited and enthusiastic in their role, good interaction with the public, community involvement, and their sense of achievement. Six officers from across the Sunshine Coast were shortlisted including locals Senior Constable Susan Lowndes from Beerwah and A/Sergeant Kelly O’Brien from Maleny. While the panel believed that all those shortlisted would be worthy recipients of the award, Sergeant Mal Scott of Cooroy Police received the title. Congratulations to Susan and Kelly. Thumbs up for being recognised for the way they do their jobs.

Fictionalised story brings memories to life

First time author Kerry Pearmain has brought to life a novel based on the recollections of Maleny resident Ted Sheen. The book ‘Ever Been Had’ is inspired by the numerous stories that Ted has shared with her over the last thirty-five years, and draws upon insights into his unusual and sometimes challenging life. Kerry originally met Ted when they were both working in Canberra following a number of individual life changes and the two became firm friends. Kerry says that over the many years she has known Ted he has always generously shared his quite remarkable stories about growing up in Western Australia, his Navy service and time serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars as well

By Sonia Clark as a period spent in a Monastic order. “Over the years I heard more and more stories about Ted’s life and realised that his journey was a story that just needed to be told,” explained Kerry. A family member prompted Kerry to publish the book and Kerry feels that she has now ‘given birth’ to the fictionalised version of the story which she absolutely loved writing. Ted, who is now in his eighties, has lived in Maleny for the last 18 years. He is impressed that over the years of their friendship Kerry has remembered many of his stories and credits her with having a very good memory. Ted fondly remembers that when he used to return from boarding school as a child his younger brother Bruce would tie bits of rag along the barb wire fence line to welcome him home. This memory is beautifully captured on the book cover designed by Ted’s daughter Therese and taken from a watercolour painting she specially created for the novel’s release. Although the book is a work of fiction he is particularly impressed with the way Kerry has crafted the story together and believes it to be well written. “I’m a little bit stoked and a bit humbled that Kerry has decided to publish this book. It has taken her many years and I feel grateful to her for writing it,” said Ted. ‘Ever Been Had’ is available through IBooks, Amazon and Kobo.

Wax wrap workshop

Have you seen or heard about wax wraps? They are reusable self-adhesive beeswax fabric food wraps which provide us with a great way to reduce our use of plastic wraps particularly in the kids’ school lunch boxes. For those of you would like to learn how to make them, Natasha Odgers will be hosting a free workshop on Friday June 8 from 12.30pm-2pm at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. Natasha is keen to encourage others to attend the creative workshop, where you can use recycled materials. To find out more or to book in you can phone the Neighbourhood Centre on 5438 7000 or email admin@ghmnc.com or visit the centre at 4 Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains Or if you can’t fit the workshop into your schedule you can also check out Landsborough local Liz Harris’s Facebook shop ‘Sustainable You and Me’. Liz sells beeswax kits which include her beeswax/coconut oil mix, ready to make into 8-12 beeswax wraps. You can contact Liz through her Facebook page. Not only are the wax wraps great for your own needs, they make great gifts for others.

Volunteer with neighbourhood centres This week celebrates National Volunteer Week (May 21-27) with the theme and message “Give a little. Change a lot”. Neighbourhood centres, sometimes called community centres, offer a variety of opportunities to be part of a team of volunteers who combine their efforts to create positive impacts on people’s lives. Hinterland Community Development worker Natasha Odgers said: “While neighbourhood centres vary in size and scope, they all aim to respond to the needs of their local communities and are managed by volunteers. “One aspect that makes neighbourhood centres in our part of the Hinterland so special, is that most are run completely or mostly by volunteers.” There are five neighbourhood centres in our

12

local area, which include Mooloolah Community Centre, Morris House Neighbourhood Centre (Landsborough), Beerwah Youth and Community Centre (BYACC), Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The Caloundra and Hinterland Community Development Program, part of the Caloundra Community Centre, works alongside and supports the capacity building of neighbourhood centres and other community organisations. The team members for this program are Natasha Odgers, Jody Blackburn and Tomas Passeggi. “The neighbourhood centres offer a range of activities and services,” Tomas said. “They play a particularly important role in supporting those

disadvantaged in our communities, through emergency relief programs and creating points of connection for those socially isolated.” Jody said: “There are so many ways people benefit from volunteering in these local organisations, such as friendships, reduced social isolation, gaining skills, support, community spirit, purpose, comradery and the gift of giving to others. Volunteering also provides a valuable stepping stone for those seeking employment.” If you have an interest in volunteering, pop in to one of the local neighbourhood or community centres, contact Natasha on 0418 720 515 or search advertised roles online with Volunteering Sunshine Coast.

This has also elevated him to the number 5 agent in QLD and number 1 on the Sunshine Coast. No mean feat for Dan as he has only been a fully commissioned agent for just over 2 years “What you can’t see is behind every great agent, there is a great team and we all work tirelessly to provide outstanding service and a premium result.” Here’s what one of Dan’s recent clients had to say:

Dan Clarke was fabulous to deal with during the recent sale of my home. He and his team secured a buyer for my property in Beerwah in just 2 weeks for the price I had hoped I would achieve. Dan knows how to 'read' the needs of his clients and buyers and is able to achieve the best outcome for both parties. His knowledge of his industry is second to none. Together with his efficient and friendly 'back up team' I would heartily recommend Dan and his team.

WHAT MAKES MALENY CREDIT UNION DIFFERENT FROM THE REST?

Rotary shares the funds around

The Rotary Club of Maleny’s Community Grants presentation dinner was held last week, with 12 local community groups being the beneficiaries of almost $9,000 in funds for a range of projects across sports, arts, culture and recreation. The initiative, now in its fourth year, was originally an idea by Rotarian Angela Griffin, which the club got behind and it has clearly been appreciated by the local groups who submit an application of their project for consideration. The successful organisations this year included Maleny’s State School, the Netball Association, Pony Club, Golf Club, Croquet Club, Arts Council, Menshed, Cultural and Heritage Society, Neighbourhood Centre, the Smart Living Society, the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild, and the Celebration of Books Festival. A number of the grants, in particular for the

sporting groups, will contribute to the purchase of equipment and infrastructure. The Maleny State School's grant will contribute to their participation in the Sunshine Coast Council Waste 2 Resource School STARS program where students learn to recycle and compost as well as establishing and maintaining a vegetable and herb garden. The Woodcrafters will be purchasing good quality hand tools to meet a renewed interest in hand tools by the enthusiasts under instruction to ensure that hand woodcraft skills can be maintained into the future. The Maleny Golf Club will use their grant to hold a free golf clinic for junior golfers during the July school holidays with coaching provided by a golf professional as a way of encouraging schoolage students to participate in golf as a healthy alternative outdoor activity.

Recycling old glasses and mobile phones The Lions Club recycling program for unwanted spectacles has been in operation for 26 years and has delivered over seven million pairs of refurbished quality spectacles to men, women and children, in underdeveloped areas in the world, as well as providing the manpower to reach and test villagers’ eyesight in the remotest areas. This has now been joined by a recycled mobile phone program, with all money raised by selling usable components aiding the Lions Medical Research Foundation. This organisation provides seed money to enable researchers such as Dr Ian Frazer to continue their work between grants. The LMRF helps fund research on Parkinson’s disease, prostate cancer, ovarian and cervical cancer and hypoxic ischemia in newborn and premature babies. Do you love little kids and enjoy a chat?

Contributed by Sally Joyce Through the very generous support from the local community, Peachester State School was recently presented with three beautiful new honour boards to commemorate students’ achievements and dedication to our school with a permanent fixture for future students and community to see. The School Captains board was donated by the The Peachester Sawmill, the Encouragement Award board was donated by Peachester QCWA, and the Courtesy, Consideration and Competence Award board was donated by the Peachester History Committee.

It is a great way to connect with local families by being part of a friendly, fun playgroup. Helpers are invited to simply help parents in the kitchen, set-up and pack-up on a weekly or fortnightly basis, chat and play as a grandparent figure with our families (no age restrictions). Volunteer roles are on Wednesdays 9am11.30am during school terms. No qualifications are required and a free Blue Card is arranged for volunteers. Mother’s Day High Tea

Contributed by Prep Teachers, Catherine Brannigan and Tamra Philpot Prep students at Beerwah State School recently hosted their annual Mother’s Day High Tea for their much loved Mothers (and a few Grandmas and Fathers too) to express their gratitude and celebrate this special occasion. In the week leading up to this special event, students were busy cooking some delectable treats and they even got to use some ingredients from the kitchen garden – harvesting the herbs and vegetables themselves. It was so lovely to see so many people attend to share in this celebration with their Prep student. The Preps loved hosting their special guests and enjoyed tasting the fruits of their labour.

Community Matters A key area of focus at Glass House Early Education Centre is the importance of local community, its members and the people who actively serve within it. Building strong community partnerships not only strengthens the position of the Centre but also reinforces the value of being part of a wider connection – this message is especially shared with the children in the Senior Kindy and School Ready rooms. Last week Glass House Early Education Centre welcomed a very special visitor to the Centre. The dad of one of the Centre children is also a Police Officer and he very kindly donated his time to come in and chat to the children about being a Police Officer, serving the community and safety. The children got to ask questions about being a Police Officer and what to do if they were in trouble. He also shared some useful safety messages. Following his visit, quite a few of the children have now reassessed their future career aspirations!

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Centre Coordinator Ange Hardy said they are planning visits from other local community service members and would love to have a visit from a local doctor or dentist. A visit from the local Rural Fire Brigade has also been planned coming up. “We love that we can welcome members of our wider community to come in and share their knowledge with our children – especially when it relates to our focus on the importance of belonging and contributing to our local community,” says Ange. These types of presentations and talks are particularly well received by the children in the ‘School Ready’ room and are a great example of the commitment the Centre team have towards engaging and extending the knowledge of this age group. Early childhood teacher Emma Coultis leads the Centre’s School Ready room. Emma says she likes to draw upon the most recent study and research as well as the latest technological advancements to help enhance the learning journey of the children. “Many of our activities and play ideas are ‘observation based’ – which are directly inspired by the observed interests of the children. This is a key area of the teaching approach here,” says Emma. Through her studies and Prep class internship, Emma fully realises the numerous benefits in preparing young children well for school. “I love teaching this age group, and it is wonderful to help them extend their independence and self-reliance skills.

We want to prepare them socially and emotionally for school by building their ability and confidence to ensure the easiest transition to ‘big school.” In the School Ready room (Kindergarten) children further develop letter and number recognition skills as well as practical skills like writing their name and holding a pencil. Outdoor nature play is always strongly encouraged and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities are really popular – as well as lessons on the interactive ‘smart board’. Glass House Early Education Centre offers a quality driven Kindergarten program to help children be ‘school ready’. To find out more or for an obligation free tour of the Centre, please call 5438 7311, or call in to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

Community Call Out If you are a local doctor or dentist who would like to come in and chat about your job and what you do in the community please contact the Centre.

Fresca Market & Cafe

If you haven’t already ventured into Fresca Market and Café (formerly Vecchio's Café and Fruit Shop) on Steve Irwin Way at Glass House Mountains, you will to be amazed at the dramatic changes the new owners Kristina and Tony have made to the place. They have retained the rustic origins of the building, however as the automatic doors glide open you are welcomed into a really fresh, modern, open, airconditioned market space with lots of lovely fresh fruit and veg, gelato, deli and gourmet food items. They have also expanded the café area and given the outdoor dining area a

major facelift – and the best part, well for me anyway, is they have an amazing range of Italian biscuits and sweets made on the premises by Kristina’s mum. After chatting to Kristina I realise just how passionate she is about food and coffee, and what they have already created is just a starting point. She has lots of other great ideas of what she is planning to incorporate. In particular, she would like to expand the range of local products and produce they are able to offer.

You Said It District Park Maleny

I find it hard to believe that since council purchased the Maleny Precinct land more than a decade ago, we still don't have what the vast majority of residents have repeatedly indicated they want for this space. I am deeply concerned that a proposed 'District Park' on the North Maleny Road may be used as a substitute for a simple, spacious, family-friendly park on the South Precinct. Most visitors to the Precinct area enter via the new boardwalk. It seems to me that a parkland integrated into this existing Precinct walk should still be the top priority for the community and its many visitors. Drew Nichols Maleny

Parks for Maleny

The Community Parks Maleny campaign is delighted that the park situation in Maleny is receiving attention at last. We are however concerned that Sunshine Coast Council is taking an ad hoc approach when what's needed is integrated planning. The Precinct was master planned in 2010 as if it was a discrete entity independent of the town. As it has never been reviewed in the light of changing circumstances (no plan is good forever), we have the peculiar situation that a District Park is to be created on the Northern Precinct when it is the Southern Precinct where one is needed, due the unforeseen popularity of the Maleny Trail at that end and its proximity to town on foot. The site of the so-called 'Heritage Park', formerly the 'Memorial and Pioneer Community Park' launched recently on the Southern Precinct, wasn't chosen because it is park-suitable but because it was spare to sports-related ambitions for the rest of area going back to 2010. An integrated, objective planning process would also identify whether a Heritage Park is, in fact, a sound investment, based on the overall park situation in Maleny, and if so, locate it appropriately. The obvious sites are the Pioneer Village or Pattemore House which have open space in abundance. The three town parks, Tesch, Cooke and Mary Allen-Waters, are three parts of a whole that also need integrated planning, taking account that they are all too small and too close to busy roads to compensate for a proper, spacious recreational park where children can run wild close to town. accident in our 2km road. Admittedly we get a few cars or motorcycles going past our property in half the time it takes the average rider/driver and this is usually at night. It does not take a maths genius to calculate that they are travelling at speeds higher than 120km/h. Changing the speed limit from 80 to 60km/h is not going to change this stupid behaviour. Our suggestion to all governments is that they should introduce similar legislation to the draconian road laws that existed in the UK in the late 1800s whereby all motor vehicles would be restricted to a 10km speed limit & have a person running in front of the vehicle carrying a red flag. This would have many benefits. Primarily it would reduce the unemployment to zero percent because of all the flag waving runners required. Secondly all levels of government could abolish all rates, taxes and charges as they would have their coffers overflowing with the revenue coming from fining the drivers/riders say $150 if they exceed the speed limit by 3km/h – of course higher fines for more than 3km/h. As an afterthought they should ban all steam whistles, klaxons, bells and horns on vehicles as they could possibly frighten overtaking horses, carriages and bullock drays. Phil Maleny

Road Conditions

For those that have concerns about the condition of the decoration of the road surface on Roys Road at Beerwah, I have corresponded with our Councillor Rick Baberowski about this matter. Council now have it in their budget for the upcoming financial year starting early to resurface this major road. As we are all aware, this road now carries a large number of heavy vehicles which has contributed to a major issue with it. For those that can remember the dirt section which was updated to bitumen, that section is doing quite fine. That road was not intended when first constructed to ever carry the volume of traffic as to what it now carries in 2018. Once this work commences we can expect some traffic issues with delays, but remember we sometimes have to sacrifice to gain. Many thanks to our councillor Rick Baberowski for replying to my email relating to my concerns about this road. Trevor Watts Beerwah

Re: Pot holes

Moreton Bay Regional Council purchased a brand new ‘you beaut’ truck some time ago. It drives over the alleged pot hole and fills it, only they didn't do their homework. The ingredients required were not readily available, hence they have to travel miles to get that.

SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519

Queensland Government is using carpet tiles in their endeavours to better fill pot holes and they appear to be working most satisfactorily. They are not a 100% cure, but seem to last longer until the new surface is laid, which is something at least. However pot holes are only one of the frustrating local issues. When it rains in Glass House, Reid Street floods, drains are blocked mainly because grass clippings are never swept up and removed, but are allowed to venture into the poor drainage we have. On the weekend of May 12-13 the traffic management signage erected along Old Gympie Road at Glass House Mountains to inform the driver of impending danger was flattened and left lying on the roadside. Why do council even bother to erect them? And why aren’t the local police attending to the hoons who come from Bribie Island and Caboolture on a Friday night and take over the intersection with the Beerburrum Woodford Road, leaving their burnt out tyres all over the damaged road surface. Service station in Maleny

I recently sent an email to the Minister for Main Roads, Mark Bailey, appealing for him to intervene and deny the application of Synergy Property Partners to construct a petrol station on the main street in Maleny exactly opposite the primary school. This proposed development shows clearly that the planning authorities have no real concern or understanding of how we should be zoning land use and I am very upset that the Sunshine Coast Council is more interested in money for development than safety and responsible use of land. I would like to see a full service station up on the Blackall Range but when its sheer size conflicts with the nature of our area I would rather do without. The impact of a petrol station on the proposed site would be a disaster. As it is now, the school bus and parent pick-up area is tightly controlled for pedestrian traffic and is a congested area on a two lane main road through the town. The high school walkers, of which there are many, use this thoroughfare to and from school, and that should be encouraged. Another planning concern is the effect of runoff and pollution created by petrol station aprons, this should be considered with the site being uphill from the Obi. Please visit our town and made an appropriate assessment of this situation. Sunshine Coast Council should be responsible in zoning land use and refund the application fees immediately. News in Brief English should not be treated like a third-rate subject

We want our kids to be the smartest in the nation. As a father of five, I know reading and writing are two of the basic skills our kids need to get a job and succeed in life. With the worst unemployment rate in Australia, Annastacia Palaszczuk and Labor should be doing more to help our next generation of workers get a good job. Revelations English will not be a mandatory inclusion for ATAR, the new university entrance ranking system, diminishes the importance of the subject. It also sends the wrong message to our kids and our teachers. We should be boosting literacy and numeracy standards, not reducing standards. English should not be treated like a third-rate subject. If it’s good enough for the other states, it should be good enough for Queensland kids. Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to intervene and reverse this terrible decision. Education should be a major priority because we know that an investment in education is an investment in the future of our children and grandchildren. Labor is settling for second best and I don’t think that’s good enough. Andrew Powell MP Member for Glass House

State of the world

In my previous letter regarding plastics, water and food supplies I quoted an interview with Chris Darwin, Charles Darwin’s great, great grandson. He said, “We’ve only just come out of a cave really. We were never programmed to run a planet. We were never programmed to think about even our

entire global population. We’re not designed for the role that we find ourselves in, and so it’s not surprising we’re not really doing it very well.” One in eight bird species is threatened with global extinction. Many species are now plummeting towards oblivion, according to a definitive study of global bird populations. The State of the World’s Birds, a five-year compendium of population data, reveals a crisis driven by the intensification of agriculture. In all, 74% of 1,469 globally threatened birds are affected primarily by farming. The report says at least 40% of bird species worldwide are in decline due to human activity. After farming, logging is key in declines of 50% of the most globally endangered species. World research is finding common chemicals and pharmaceutical drugs in water supplies and in all oceans. Many chemicals get flushed into our water supply from all the pills we take. As the world’s population grows, the massive consumption of pharmaceuticals is now an emerging threat to the world’s freshwater ecosystems. The European Geosciences Union General Assembly recent research warns that if no action is taken to stop this, the amount of drug waste entering waterways, rivers and lakes will increase by 65% to 2050, endangering all world fish populations. The consensus on plastics is that we don’t know how micro-plastics affect human health. We don’t know the risk when we drink contaminated bottled or tap water every day. We don’t know how much we are ingesting or breathing, or what effect exposure to hazardous plastic particles may have over years. Richard Giles Conondale

Obi Obi Boardwalk closed

The Obi Obi Boardwalk at Maleny will be closed between 7am and 4.30pm weekdays for structural refurbishment. The community weren’t advised in advance that it was happening, and it was only shared by Sunshine Coast Council on Facebook after the area was closed and the signs had gone up. The work commenced on May 17, and the project is expected to take four weeks to complete. If council sticks to their timeframe, the boardwalk will remain closed during weekdays until about June 14.

Cups of tea creating a cancer free future Queenslanders have made every cup count for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea over the past 25 years – helping to pour vital funds into cancer control. In Queensland around 27,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year and around 8,700 die from the disease. One Queenslander is diagnosed with cancer every 20 minutes – the length of an average morning tea break. Why not make your morning tea this Thursday, May 24, really count, and help pave the way forward to a cancer free future? Why not head along to the Mooloolah Slimmers event at the Mooloolah Hall? They will be serving a lovely morning tea from 10am, $10 entry. The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre will host a Biggest Morning Tea event at The Orangery Maleny from 10am. It has long been known that a diet rich in fibre improves intestinal health and reduces inflammation in the gut; now a Monash University study shows that fibre can protect against the flu virus. Professor Benjamin Marsland from the Department of Immunology, together with Swiss colleagues, showed in mice that fibre fermented in the gut by bacteria countered influenza A, one of the most common viral diseases worldwide. The findings suggest that fermented fibre and byproducts of this process called short-chain fatty acids could be investigated further for potential use in preventing and treating viral infections including the flu, and possibly as a supplement to improve the efficacy of the flu vaccine. “What is produced in the gut doesn’t just change what’s in the gut,” Professor Marsland said. “It goes into the circulation and changes the immune system at one of the most fundamental levels – the bone marrow – where a lot of our immune cells develop.”

From the churches The celebration of Pentecost is observed by most Christian denominations. Among the beliefs in the life of Christ upon which we agree, Christ's promise to send the Advocate is certainly one. Again we return to Scripture to trace the origins of the promise, find descriptions of the event and discover the overwhelming difference the experience of Pentecost has on believers. As we can tell from the word, 50 days after Passover there was an established feast in the Jewish calendar. That is why Jews from around the Mediterranean were in Jerusalem. The followers of Jesus meanwhile were still dubious about appearing in public. They knew Jesus had risen from the dead but the full consequences were not understood. The phenomena surrounding the event are unusual but rushing wind and tongues of fire are described in the Bible. These led to a unique and powerful unleashing of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God, God's breath and life was sent as a gift in a way not seen before. The Spirit present at creation, bringing life out of chaos and who

spoke to the prophets who preached God's Word to the people, was sent upon the believers and remains with them forever. The courage, enthusiasm and fire of God's Spirit is seen at work in believers as they tell the story of Jesus in a way both fearless and understood by those who listen. This feast of the Holy Spirit is significant because all that could possibly sustain us as we tell the story of Jesus, Son of God, is God's own spirit. The only story we have to tell is Jesus and the only guide we have is his spirit. When we forget that, then we become only interested in ourselves. The church to which I belong has learnt that lesson the hard way by not being attentive enough to those who had suffered abuse as children. But when we open our hearts and minds to the life of God then we can only look outwards to God's creation and see the human family made in God's image and redeemed by God's son and love as God loves. What better way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon than listening to that most versatile and beautiful instrument, the clarinet, followed by the best afternoon tea in Maleny? Well, perhaps by listening to a clarinet choir of more than twenty clarinets, ranging from the small piccolo to the large contra-bass. Classic Clarinets of Brisbane (pictured right) is coming to Maleny especially for a concert to be held in St George’s Church on Saturday June 9 at 2pm. It is essential to book, as space is obviously limited and if you are a music lover, you don’t want to miss out. Ring the Parish Office on 5499 9130 or email angmaleny@westnet.com.au. Tickets are $20 and $10 for school aged children. This includes refreshments. Under its director Graham Evans, the ensemble plays all styles of music from Baroque to modern day popular pieces that showcase the instrument’s versatility. After a career in British orchestras, Graham, now resident in Brisbane, performs, teaches and is active as an adjudicator, examiner and conductor. There is plenty of parking at St George’s Anglican Church, either in the grounds or close by. The address is 2 Walkers Drive, Maleny, on the corner of Tallowwood Street.

In the Garden A garden shared is double the delight Thanks to everyone who shared with me a photo and description of a special place in their garden. Congratulations to the five randomly selected winners of the double passes to the Gardening on the Edge open garden weekend – Angela Dennis, Toni Grant, Chloe May, Nicole Hilton and Noela Collins. Gardening is often a very personal pursuit, with us gardeners focused on trying to achieve a certain end result, often battling against the hands we are dealt – be that soil, slope, shade, sun, aspect, time, knowledge and/or levels of perseverance. But sometimes several gardeners form a special bond, brought together by their obsession and by a confluence of geography – that is, they are neighbours. And so it is for the keen gardeners Dot Jupp and Peter Webb and Graham and Toni Shackell from Flaxton. Adjacent neighbours they may be, but their abiding friendship has flourished over the years based – among other things – on their mutual love of gardening. Dot is the immediate past-coordinator for the Maleny Garden Club’s Gardening on the Edge extravaganza and has now taken up the mantle of club President. This year, she and Peter have teamed up with Graham and Toni to open up their adjoining properties as two of the six Gardening on the Edge open gardens. The six open gardens this year promise to showcase a fantastic range of landscapes, each with many ‘special places’ which the garden owners are madly working on to make sure they look at their very best for the June 9 and 10 open garden weekend. Dot and Peter have created what they describe as controlled wildness, where the garden seems to have a life of its own, but everything is very well considered and has its purpose. Their favourite place is their Woodland glade. This shady dell was just an unorganised part of the garden overrun with Wandering Jew when they arrived, but they soon saw that, with some restructuring, it could become a place which is almost enchanting.

It has been transformed into a tranquil reflective area, filled with colour and form. A well-placed large urn pot at the junction of a series of pathways anchors the landscape giving your eye a focal point, as well as somewhere to stop and take in the stillness. Stepping across the stile into the neighbouring property of Graham and Toni, you are met with quite a different landscape. Graham is the gardener while Toni is the social heart and soul, while occasionally venturing out to give some words of encouragement to Graham and bring him refreshments to keep him going. Although Graham’s approach to gardening is more manicured than Dot and Peter’s, the harmony between the two adjoining landscapes is enviable. With a parklike feel, their flowing property has a more traditional ‘estate’ feel – large open spaces, feature plantings, ornamental structures, vistas and large productive gardens and orchards. Graham has become something of a productive garden guru, winning the trophy as the best fruit and vegetable grower of the year in the Maleny Garden Club. So not surprisingly, Graham’s ‘special place’ is his garden… which at the moment is showcasing an impressive Queensland blue pumpkin crop, amongst many others. Toni’s special place is the arbour created especially for her ‘angel garden’, where her collection of angels, cherubs and seraphs live. When the covering vines are in full bloom, it must truly be a heavenly sight. Make sure you keep your weekend of June 9 and 10 free for Gardening on the Edge. Not only are there six wonderful open gardens (and it’s only $20 to see them all), but there is a garden expo at the Maleny Showgrounds which is chocko-block with plants and gardening products, and it’s free to get in. For more details on Gardening on the Edge, go to www.malenygardenclub.org.

As the weather cools and the long wet season draws to an end (for now!), we find ourselves at a change in the seasons. It’s that time of year when it’s great to find a patch of sun protected from the southerlies and bask in its warmth. So too for the wildlife. Snakes and lizards will be slowing down and less likely to be seen (sigh of relief for those who suffer from Ophidiophobia – fear of snakes). Migratory birds have already or are still heading north to warmer climes, and mammals of various sizes are putting on woollier coats to help keep away the winter chills. Those of you who have some sympathies for our local wildlife may be inclined to put out regular food for that shivering Kookaburra or the clever Magpie or that cute Rainbow Lorikeet. However, one of the best ways to make sure our wildlife are set for winter is to ensure there’s plenty of habitat and natural food available for them. We can do this by planting a wide range of native plants in our gardens to ensure a broad diversity of habitat, shelter and food. For example, about ten years ago we planted a White Cedar Melia azedarach in one our revegetation patches. This tree is now nearly 10 metres high and this year it fruited prolifically, and over the last few weeks we got to enjoy the raucous calls of Flying Foxes during the night and a whole host of singing birds during the day feasting on the fruit. In such a short period of time nature, with a little help from us, has created great abundance to be shared. There’s never been a better time to plant native trees, shrubs, vines, grasses and herbs so that we and the wildlife can all share in nature’s abundance. Spencer and his wife Karen Shaw run Forest Heart Nursery 20 Coral Street, Maleny in Maleny. Their nursery concentrates on local native plants, 07 5435 2193 bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, fruit trees, nonOPEN Tue - Fri 9am-5pm invasive exotics, tools and equipment, garden and ecology Sat 8am - 2:00pm education, books, DVDs, art and so much more.

I am often faced with landlords who take out their own insurance to discover that excesses are high, important inclusions are not covered there is fine print that can Ross Rutledge and make a claim void. As a landlord 5499 9525 or it is important to take out the most 0447 787 020 comprehensive insurance you can find to ensure that your asset is protected. Some bank insurance and non-industry policies can result in lost money when making a claim. Always take the time to compare policy details.

District Mixed Pairs nominations are open with money and nomination to be in to our club secretary by this Thursday. We have had five pair teams from our club nominate, which is brilliant. Club Champion of Champions is coming up in July for both men and ladies, details can be acquired from the club now. The men’s A singles have been drawn. Please check the times you’re playing on the draw which is up at the club. Remember it is your responsibility to find a marker for round 1 and likely 2. Men’s Triples open this Thursday and this year for the first time will be 2 bowl. Also I forgot to mention a get well to the ladies president Sue O’Hagan in last week’s article. Contributed by Ken Barker On Saturday our Bray team, Sarah Widin, Kath Smith, Helen and Frances, played Headland Buderim who fielded Carolyn Aldrich, Diane Hursman, Lesley Johnston and Ken Woodward. Conditions for play were beautiful. The two singles games in the morning went to Maleny. Sarah defeated Carolyn 13-12. Frances beat Diane 11-8 in a hard fought and interesting game. In the afternoon Kath and Helen went down to Lesley and Ken 7-8 after being ahead for most of the game. It’s great to see so many players from the two clubs involved in this competition. The Range won the round 2 games to 1. On Thursday, after a run of perfect playing days, it rained just as play was about to begin. An inquiry will be held into who in the club is also a member of the Show Society. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover It was another great week at Maleny Bowls Club, great weather brought out some great bowls performances. Thanks to all for supporting our Tuesday bowls. Wednesday night bowls proved another great night of upsets, pressure got the best of Mobile Kingdom. They seemed very out of form and crashed to a big defeat... one of the biggest. It could be Brett drinking beer on tap that has made the difference. However Dicko and Ash have benefited from their extra games in being part of this season’s biggest upset which saw Mobile Kingdom suffer a big loss. Well done North Maleny boys keep it up. This has opened the door for a potential four way battle for the coveted trophy for the season with two rounds to go. Could it be the Handels to come from behind this season to win or possibly the Bridge Club? Organiser Miles Allen suggested the Tutors could surprise. During the last two weeks of competition form has been thrown out the window with many close games and upsets the order of the day. The only thing one could be sure of is that people who play will have a great time enjoying cold beer now on tap at Maleny Bowls Club. Thanks to our bar volunteers who are getting into the swing of pouring some nice cold gold. Scroungers – close games were also on the cards, well done to the six rinks for your close games. John Kapetanic does not see his -10 handicap as any handicap as he continues his fine form. Miles Allen held his cool to win in a 3-way play off. It is great to see the numbers of chocolates given away for the maximum scores on each end. The club is pleased to announce Cadbury as a sponsor. Some excellent games were played throughout the week in the club championships with Jim Wiedmanis the first person to claim a place in this year’s finals. Congratulations Jim. Over the next week more will become clear as to the singles finalists for 2018. Illness and injury is playing its part. The rough and tumble of lawn bowls has been put to the test. Well done again to all involved in the club championships, thanks for your efforts. Don't forget to nominate for the men’s and women’s pairs by next Tuesday. It was great to have the first of our school groups for 2018 start at the club on Thursday. Year 5 from the River School had a great time in their first visit to the club. A big warm welcome, kids!

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wagtails had a bye. The Whistlers played at Caloundra against the Hot Chillies. It was cloudy in the morning and they had big rain overnight so the court was wet which made the balls very heavy. We all struggled with wet balls and different bounce, running a bit extra. So it was lots of running with lots of deuces and good rallies. We didn't get enough games but it was long day with 2 tie-break sets. Score was 32-42 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Donna Kuskopf. The Wildcats were at home to Caloundra Skylarks. It was another close game with not much in it at the half way mark. Annie, Stacey, Libby and Jenie came out in the second half and took control of the match bringing home a good win. Score was 44-33, 5-3 sets. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

ARIES March 21 – April 20 You will find this week that you get an early start. Hope, faith and charity are never out of style and can lead you into professional insights. Keep out of complications of others’ mood swings. Even if you find your financial rewards are tossing and turning about with some struggle, do not lose heart! A Full Moon arrives for travel benefits. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Your personal prestige is high this week, thanks to an energetic planet called Uranus which is helping you to enthusiastically embrace progressive ideas. Everyday responsibilities are accented so deal with them and swiftly they all become minor problems! Relations are activated over the weekend. Ensure you keep your own personal independence. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 Best not to burn the candle at both ends into the early morning hours. You have probably found a wonderful book to read or perhaps it is the ongoing drama series of a TV sitcom. Be victorious in closing your book or switching off the TV as your mind, body and soul need a rest. Contemplate seriously a balanced walking exercise program. CANCER June 24 – July 22 Some novel ideas are going to arrive but you may have to keep them on the back burner, at least for now. That may be because of background work yet to be done. There is some frank talking that might help you to understand the ‘whys’ and ‘wherefores’ of a conflict. It is all bought into focus if somebody has a mediation background.

LEO July 23 – August 22 As the Sun has already entered the sign of Gemini, and you head towards the Full Moon on the 29th, everything stimulates your personal and social connections. Mercury gives you the gift of the gab as it enters Gemini. Remember to not allow contention or aggressiveness to get the better of you. We advise seriously that you stay ethical. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 There is coming up for you a sweet Mercury connection to the planet Neptune as well as Mercury in a good aspect to Pluto. With Jupiter and Neptune also involved, the words “ringing the church bells” this weekend bring faith, hope and charity. This is one of your most optimistic weeks. Your home life and job is in a better balance now. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This week is building under pressure about a trip and work that still needs to be done. Look for joyful ways to increase your funds, but especially to enjoy the money that you have. The Full Moon coming up in a few days enlivens communications, especially attending to the details of a trip being planned. It is your time to be bold and confident. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 There is a lovely aspect in the stars with Jupiter being in your sign, and Neptune in transit through another compatible sign. The angle of these stars restores hope, faith and optimism. Perhaps there is a touch of luck under the Full Moon that blesses your resources. Try some contagious enthusiasm to bring a stroke of good fortune.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This is your week to have confidence and leadership ability. Early connections with good friends start the day harmoniously. Your spiritual views on life are uplifting and so your soulful quest is very enlightening. Remember to be practical as these insights help you see the bottom line to everything. The Full Moon gives speech success. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Social life is activated this weekend and highly active too. There is a competitive streak, so put it to good use by teaming up with others rather than being always an adversary. Enjoy the week with lots of smiles and encouragement from others. Your social life and dealings with a group lift your spirits. Sharp incisive words keep you practical. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 There is a travel or publishing plan getting into place. No doubt you, and others, will feel cheery and optimistic. Frowns of the last week are replaced with smiles this week. The morning rays of sunshine shine through with rewards for your faith you have been nurturing. Under a Full Moon in Sagittarius there is a lively communication network. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Whatever is your objective, you will find the motivation this week to shift into the fast lane and make things happen. There may be a personal disappointment, but on the other hand the Full Moon in Sagittarius can be used to assess new challenges that help you learn and grow. If you are travelling there is no need for snap moves or decisions, just slow down!

Dental Excel.... Family Dentist The Dental Excel dental practice has been serving the Beerwah and hinterland community for over 20 years. The practice was started by Dr Jeff Cox some six years prior to this and then purchased by Dr David Marley when he emigrated from the UK in 1997. Dental Excel has grown since then but still aims to provide the best and most appropriate treatment for each and every patient who trusts us with their dental care.

It is becoming more and more obvious that good dental health is extremely important to general health with more general health conditions associated with poor dental health. All general dentistry such as white fillings, hygiene, root canal therapy, crowns and bridges are routine treatments for the dentists at Dental Excel.

Implants

Orthodontics

David and Finbarr have a great interest in the placing and restoring of dental implants and are constantly undergoing continuing education in the field. They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients. Implants can be used to restore function or cosmetics by filling gaps with implant crowns and bridges or to restrain those dentures which have a mind of their own.

Children in the developmental stages of their dentition are best served by being referred to a specialist orthodontist to guide them to a good result both functionally and aesthetically. However, there are many adult patients and older teenagers who are left with crooked or crowded front teeth who can benefit from the new technology of new orthodontic treatments such as FASTBRACES and INMAN ALIGNER. Raj and Finbarr, in suitable patients, are achieving excellent transformations. A consultation is free and will enable you to explore your options if you have concerns in this area.

Dentures

Bleaching

Dental Excel dentists still enjoy providing dentures, either partial or full, and aim to achieve both a good functional result but also that dentures provide as cosmetically pleasing a result for patients as possible. The dentist works in harmony with a very experienced technician so that between them they can achieve the best result. The correct extension and occlusal balance is of paramount importance for dentures to be wearable and the former is singularly missing in many dentures. Implants, where bone permits, can be life changing when used to stabilise and retain either partial or full dentures but must be viewed as a plus factor and not a substitute for well-constructed dentures. Fixed dentures are also now an alternative for many people.

Both home kit bleaching and in surgery ZOOM Tooth Whitening are available at Dental Excel.

Children Dental Excel welcomes our younger clients and also supports the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme for eligible 2-17 year olds. A dedicated child play area for littlies has recently been added in our Beerwah clinic.

Cosmetic

Payment Plan

For those patients who wish to improve the cosmetics of their smile, all options such as composite veneers and porcelain veneers in association with general bleaching, are available as well as cosmetic crowns where required. SNAP ON SMILES is a really innovative new cosmetic product which for many people is a very easy way of achieving a great smile without major dental work and can both cover existing teeth and fill gaps present. This may be a great short or long-term solution for many people.

Here at Dental Excel we understand that there are so many expenses in modern life which tend to push taking care of that precious dental health well down the list, yet healthy and attractive teeth are a great asset to us all and regular care very often prevents big problems down the line. Therefore, we have recently introduced a ‘NO INTEREST EVER’ payment plan so that patients can have the treatment they need now and do not have to wait, and then pay for the treatment in instalments after (conditions apply). For dental implants / orthodontics / cosmetics we offer a free patient assessment.
