NOVEMBER 23 2016
O
nce again this year we headed along to what in my day were called ‘Year 12 Formals’ which now appear to be called ‘Grads’. On Monday and Wednesday night we had ourselves in prime position outside of the Caloundra Events Centre from around 5.00pm with our plan in place to take as many photos as possible of the Beerwah and Maleny High students as they arrived, some of them in some pretty impressive vehicles! I did notice quite a few dads weren’t just taking photos of their gorgeous daughters and stylish sons, but quite a few of the ‘impressive vehicles’ as well. The level of excitement from both the students and the parents as they arrive makes for an adrenaline-packed moment. It reminds me of the phrase ‘like herding cats’ – albeit very excited and very glamourous cats! This year we have expanded our coverage to create a pull-out Grad 2016 feature, and have tried to include as many of the photos as possible from the event arrival. Those that couldn’t fit on the pages we have included on Facebook. Special thanks also to Sandy Johnson who took photos of the Glasshouse Christian College students who held their event at Flaxton Gardens on the Wednesday. We hope you enjoy seeing the students that you know – some of them might be hard to recognise as they definitely look a whole lot different out of their school uniforms! Regards,

The Federal Government has announced it will provide the Sunshine Coast Council with a $181 million loan to assist with the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion is one of the region’s game-changer projects identified in the Regional Economic Development Strategy 2013-2033. “Now with the major project approvals in place and access to this loan confirmed, council is able to go ahead with the construction of the new runway, apron expansion and related infrastructure,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Council first made its request to the Federal Government for a concessional loan more than two years ago and I am pleased we finally have an outcome. “I stress that this is a loan, not a grant, which council is required to repay. “The estimated net benefit of the loan to council – based on the loan terms and conditions – is approximately $1 million depending on the drawdown of funds and this represents the value of the Commonwealth’s contribution towards enabling this significant regional infrastructure project to proceed.

“The Airport expansion project will contribute $4.1 billion to the Sunshine Coast economy between 2020 and 2040 and result in 3,500 fewer dwellings being affected by noise by 2020. “It will ensure we have an airport that can accommodate larger, more fuel efficient aircraft, enabling more direct flights to more locations in Australia, Asia and the Western Pacific. “Those new routes will boost our tourism and international trade and help our export businesses, particularly those operating in the food and agribusiness sectors, so they get their products and services to markets faster and more efficiently. “With this approval now provided, and once the loan documentation is signed and conditions satisfied, council will move forward with the construction project so the new runway and associated infrastructure is in place by Christmas 2020.”

Local designer Natalie Cunningham recently took home two awards at the ninth annual Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival and Design Awards held at the end of October. Natalie, who designs her own range of Indigenous inspired resort wear, won best fashion designer for her pieces in both the Resort Wear and Indigenous categories. As a Sunshine Coast Designer, Natalie was familiar with the well known festival, especially as she was also nominated last year. A few months ago, Natalie was advised that she had been nominated again and picked as a finalist for the Best Resort Wear Fashion Designer and The Best Indigenous Fashion Designer. Nominated by the community, a prerequisite for selection is that designers must be based or begun their label while living on the Sunshine Coast. “As a small fashion label built here in the Hinterland it makes me proud to see my designs getting some exposure and recognition in being nominated for these awards,” said Natalie. After showcasing her label at New York Fashion Week last year, Natalie returned home and put more thought into where the label needs to be. Since then Natalie has been busy working on producing her label – Native Swimwear Australia and involving herself in the numerous business aspects required to promote her work. “My designs are authentic Indigenous to our country Australia, it’s what tourists want to take home as part of their Australian experience, so I’ve decided to work on being stocked in all the
tourist hotspots like Noosa, Bondi, Byron and Uluru,” explains Natalie. Natalie is still concentrating on resort wear which is becoming increasingly popular. She started designing kaftans, playsuits, jumpsuits and maxi dresses to compliment her swimwear designs, however she has found that even when it’s not beach weather people are still wanting to wear resort wear designs. Plans are underway for six stockists to come on board around Australia, so Natalie is working hard to fill these orders. Meanwhile, for more information, you can visit her website www. nativeswimwearaustralia.com.au or follow the label on social media.

Indoor Aquatic Centre another lap closer Finally after much deliberation, consultation, discussion and hard work over many, many years the future Maleny Indoor Aquatic and Fitness Centre has a place to call home! Since gaining the support of Maleny State School and their P & C back in March this year, all those involved in the project have been patiently waiting for the Education Department to agree to form a partnership with Sunshine Coast Council. So it was with much excitement on Friday afternoon last week that Councillor Jenny McKay and State MP Andrew Powell could finally share the good news – the Queensland Education Department has provided an in-principle agreement to a new Indoor Aquatic Centre and ‘Drop & Go’ zone being built on the Maleny State School lower oval. The announcement follows a lengthy and exhaustive process that explored all options for the siting of a new pool and improved school drop-off facilities and involved considerable consultation with the school P & C and staff. Cr McKay said: "I and the council have long supported resident's calls for a new indoor aquatic centre in Maleny – one that allowed allyear-round use and which better catered for our growing number of local competitive swimmers." Similarly, Mr Powell has long been campaigning for improved set down and pick up facilities for the students of Maleny State School, a campaign that was constantly frustrated by the traffic movements and developments around the school.

“So when – in conjunction with staff from Council, Transport and Main roads (TMR) and Education Department – we found a design that ticked all the boxes and delivered both a new aquatic centre and the 'Drop & Go' zone we got pretty excited,” Mr Powell said. “The agreement is contingent on more detailed traffic management designs, flood management and connectivity to the school proper being finalised, but all of the work can now commence thanks to the in-principle approval. “There is still plenty of work to do to keep the project moving forward. My next job will be to work with TMR to prepare the detailed traffic design – designs that Jenny will need as she expedites the matter of land tenure.” President of the Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Greg Williams said that the announcement was an important milestone for the long anticipated facility. “This is a significant piece of infrastructure that will be enjoyed by and be of benefit to so many in our community, with this indoor facility that will include a hydrotherapy pool, a 10-lane softedged 25m pool including a disability ramp, as well as a learn to swim pool, consultation rooms for specialists, squash courts / space for fitness programs and a gym,” he said. The Chair of the Maleny Indoor Aquatic and Fitness Centre Sub Committee, Kim Easton, agreed that this facility was a vital asset for the residents of Maleny and surrounding areas, and would provide a range of improved opportunities for community use, including learn to swim classes, aqua aerobics, and the use of the

Andrew Powell MP, Greg Williams, Kim Easton and Cr Jenny McKay hydro-therapy pool during school hours and throughout the entire year. Cr McKay said: "I am really excited that we are at this stage. For the first time in years, we now have a site we can all agree on. “Now the fundraising from all levels of government and the community needs to start in earnest, and with a bit more hard work we will be able to turn the community’s vision into a reality.”

Peachester Chicken helps win Camp Oven Cooking awards By Sonia Clark Inspired to source locally produced meat to enter a cooking competition, Lisa Turner attended the twoday Australian Camp Oven Festival at Millmerran in early October – entering the beginners’ cooking competition. To her complete surprise, Lisa went on to win five out of six award categories! This year over 1,500 campers and thousands of visitors attended the bi annual festival held on October 1-2 in Millmerran, west of Toowoomba. The beginners cooking competition required a ‘signature dish’ entry that had to be created using meat and products locally sourced by the entrant. Peachester local Lisa remembered a Peachester Chicken Farm cover story from GC&M News a few months earlier and created her winning entry of ‘sticky honey ginger chicken’, which she presented to the judges on a laminated placemat that featured the cover story. “I love cooking but I’ve never entered a competition like this in my life,” Lisa said. “I just wanted to have a go. I had no expectations – it was all just a bit of fun. I couldn’t believe it when I ended up winning five first places and one second with my dishes!” Lisa and her partner Rick love to go camping, and for the last two years she has belonged to a camp oven group. Her favourite oven is over 45 years old and previously belonged to Rick’s father. During the competition, Lisa cooked and Rick was her ‘bead man’ – managing the heat beads under the oven to cook the variety of dishes. They called themselves ‘Cock and Bull Story’ and were up against a number of four-person team competitors
which added to the challenge. Over the two days, Lisa was kept busy preparing many different types of dishes for judging. On the first day she made buttermilk scones, plain damper, a ‘Spanish Beef’ stew with sour cream and chive dumplings, and a steam cup pudding. The second day saw her prepare Anzac biscuits, her special signature dish using Peachester chicken (which she had gone out to the farm to buy) and local ginger, and then finally a flavoured double olive and fetta damper. “The Peachester chicken is beautiful!” she said. “I had used it once before for a curry dish but decided it was too good for curry! It really maintains its moisture when cooked and you are able to make great dishes with it.”

New child care centre considered for Glenview The old Mooloolah Valley Country Club on Glenview Road at Glenview is poised to transform once more. After being privately purchased and run as Jae’s Place for a number of years, the now disused building is being considered for a child care centre. A Material Change of Use application has been made to the Sunshine Coast Council on behalf of Connected Learning Outcomes Pty Ltd, which proposes that the building and the old lawn bowls area be used for a child care centre and associated activities. A planning report provided as part of the application identifies that the development proposes to accommodate a maximum of 79 children and 12 staff, and to develop the bowling greens into covered outdoor play spaces. As a consequence, there will be a new car parking facility built on the western side of the building, with a total of 32 parking spaces provided on-site. The applicant also proposes the establishment of a separated room within the existing building which will be provided to allow access to local sporting clubs to utilise as a meeting room (e.g. presentation and awards nights). The application is seeking to change the allowable use of the land, as it is currently in the Sport and Recreation Zone, to include child care services. The applicant argues that the change is warranted as there are no services catering

This year the Maleny Singers will present a mixed program of traditional, popular, and light classical numbers in a feast of Christmas music. Highlighting the program are three lovely Christmas pieces by John Rutter. Readers may know Rutter best as the contemporary composer of ‘Song for Athene’ – used as a recessional at the funeral for the Princess of Wales in 2007. The light classical numbers will be ‘Shepherd’s Farewell’ (Berlioz), ‘Nun’s Chorus’ (Johann Strauss), and the duet from ‘The Pearl Fishers’, (Bizet). More modern popular numbers include John Lennon/Yoko Ono’s ‘Happy Christmas’, Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s ‘Pie Jesu’, ‘The Twelfth of Never’ – made famous by Johnny Mathis, and the theme from the TV series ‘The Vicar of Dibley’. Leavening the mix will be eight traditional carols, finishing with a rollicking version of ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’. The audience will be invited to join in during a number of pieces, and the whole performance
is designed to be child-friendly. A donation is requested in lieu of an admission fee. The Maleny Singers encourage you to join them in celebrating Christmas music at the Maleny RSL Club, Friday evening, December 2, at 6.30 pm.

End of an era for Elimbah General Store
It is the end of an era for Elimbah General Store as owners Neil and Wendy Crane and their family prepare to move on from their long running business of 21 years. Since 1996, Neil and Wendy have developed the business from humble beginnings living at the back of the shop into a thriving business. Well known to Elimbah locals and visitors from far and wide – their chips and burgers were a particular favourite with regular customers coming in from as far as Samford and Caloundra. Neil and Wendy are extremely grateful for the fantastic support from the community over the decades. They are sorry to have to go, however their lease on the building premises has not been renewed and at this stage they will be forced to finalise the business in mid December. “We really don’t want to have to leave – but our hands are tied. The biggest losers in this decision will be the people of Elimbah,” explained Neil. For the last 21 years, the Crane family have been an integral part of the Elimbah community. All five of their children have grown up through the business, and many locals have shared their family stories over the years. The store has also been a consistent local employer creating dozens of jobs for Elimbah locals over the years. At this stage the future is still uncertain as Neil and Wendy are not ready to retire, so will have to look for other work or a new venture. They would like to thank their customers and staff for all the incredible support they have been given over the years. “It has been a lot a fun, in a way like a great social life, and a great place to raise the Wendy, Lucy and Neil Crane kids,” said Wendy.

Senator sits down with farmers
A cross-section of local primary producers got to meet with Ann Ross from Hive Haven shows Senator Anne Ruston, Assistant Senator Ruston how her innovative Minister for Agriculture and Water native bee box operates Resources, last week for a round table discussion on issues faced by local farmers. The meeting was coordinated by Andrew Wallace, Federal Member for Fisher, and included a number of local producers representing dairy, horticulture, fruit growers, honey and beekeeping and the nursery industry. Unsurprisingly, the hottest topic of discussion was the planned introduction of the nineteen cents in the dollar backpacker tax by the Federal Government. The farmers concerns were put honestly and succinctly and Senator Ruston could not have misunderstood their message. According to the farmers, the local industry will be negatively impacted by the introduction of the tax, which may make it harder to attract itinerant overseas workers to help at harvest and other times of the year. Their position is that, if a tax is to be introduced, to make it as low as possible to be competitive with other countries competing for their labour. In a similar vein, farmers were concerned with the findings of illegal labour practices in some parts of the country. They say that the good name of local farmers, by association, are being “dragged into the cesspool” of illegal practices created by these operators. They requested that the Senator take a message to Canberra that more enforcement needs to be applied to remove “the ratbags” from the industry. Simplifying paperwork, streamlining processes and removing red tape surrounding visas, wages and superannuation for backpacker workers was also of concern. Other issues discussed included biosecurity, transportation, telecommunications and research and development. If you have any primary production issues you would like to raise, you can do so by contacting Andrew Wallace’s office on 5493 5556 or email Andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au.

New Sponsorship Officer at Maleny Show Society The Maleny Show Society is thrilled to advise that they have recently appointed Kelly Morphett as their dedicated ‘Sponsorship Officer’. The Glass House Mountains local, who graduated last year from Sunshine Coast University with a degree in communications with a PR minor, is excited to be taking on this newly created honorary position. Starting at the beginning of October, Kelly is looking forward to building up her professional experience engaging with current sponsors as well as attracting new sponsorship for the Show. “I’m loving the opportunity to work at the Show Society, and I have been looking for a role that I could work around my family commitments,” says Kelly. “I’ve always loved the Maleny and Hinterland area and it is great to meet such a lovely mix of professional and passionate people – it is a very proactive community who obviously love what they do.”
Kelly has committed her time until the end of June next year, and during this period hopes to broaden the scope of sponsorship for the Show. With more time to dedicate to the position, Kelly is keen to also attract new sponsors in the surrounding Hinterland areas and hopes she can help raise at least $25,000 through local sponsorship. “The Maleny Show Society deeply appreciates the support from our local businesses and community,” says Show President, Ivan Hankinson. “For a number of years Lyn Burgess has done a wonderful job coordinating our sponsors and we are now very pleased that Kelly has taken on this role.”
Quiet achiever to represent Queensland By Sonia Clark Beerwah High student Hayden Bonato has been selected to represent Queensland in long jump at the 2016 Australian All Schools Championship to be held in Canberra on December 2-4. Hayden is a para-athlete (due to being profoundly deaf) and will be representing the Heat Queensland Athletics team. Recently, the Year 10 student was presented with the ‘Most Outstanding Athlete for 2016’ at the school’s award night. Keen to encourage her son and allow him to attend this fantastic opportunity in Canberra, his mum Simone Amendolia set up a ‘Go Fund Me’ page to assist in the costs of accommodation, participation and travel with the
team to the ACT. Amazingly within just one day of setting up the fundraiser, the family reached their target amount of $1,500. Hayden’s family first realised that he was naturally athletic when still in primary school when he broke the longstanding 100metre sprint record. From here Hayden fully involved himself in Little Athletics and, as his confidence has grown over the years, he has participated in more competitive challenges. “I’m extremely proud of Hayden; because he is such a quiet achiever he constantly surprises us so much,” said Simone. “He is so chuffed to be given this opportunity to stay at the Institute of Sport in Canberra – he just has a huge smile on his face about it all.” While the costs to attend the event have now been covered, any additional donations to cover extras will be covered via a collection tin at Glasshouse IGA and Beerwah Golf Club and through a sausage sizzle organised at the school.

Arts Council Christmas on the Deck
The Maleny Arts Council invites all their members and friends to the launch of their 2017 season and Christmas party on the Community Centre deck at 4.00pm on Sunday, December 4. President Jennifer Radbourne said she hoped to meet everybody in the district who loves the arts at the launch. “It is also an opportunity for our patrons to be part of the future of the Maleny Arts Council, and tell us what they thought of our 2016 program over a glass of wine and nibbles,” she said. “There will be free finger food, and the Community Centre bar will be open for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. “Especially though, we will launch our program for 2017. We are not letting the cat out of the bag before the party; our friends will have to join the committee on the deck to find out the goodies in store for next year’s season, starting on March 23. “As a committee we spend a lot of time trying to assess what our audience would be interested in, and enjoy; which is why it is important for our audiences and members to come to our Christmas party and give us an idea of what they liked and didn’t in our year’s program. “Our aim is to provide as varied a program as the professional offerings allow, and include a good mix of theatre and music. We have decided on only four shows next year and all I am prepared to say before the launch on December 4 is that there will be two drama performances and two music.”
Maleny Arts Council Executive Program Director Peter Lavery, Treasurer John Marsden and President Jennifer Radbourne show off some posters from the 2016 season
Free workshops for members of committees Three inspirational talks and workshops have been planned to help inspire and support committee members of small community-based organisations on the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast Coalition of Community Boards (SC CoCB) initiative facilitates collaboration and training to strengthen the viability of small organisations. The talks cover the topics of innovation, reinvention and relationship in relation to small community groups. “Following the talks we will work with the groups to find out what their training and organisational needs are for 2017,” said project worker Ana Greenfield. “Lots of boards have recently had Annual General Meetings, people may be new or the group might be experiencing other challenges – the coalition is here to support these groups and strengthen community networks on the Sunshine Coast,” she said. The Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre's story will feature at the first event, to be held at Beerwah Community Hall at 9.30am on Thursday, November 24. This is a story of major organisational challenges followed by organisational review and reinvention. The second event offers the story of a number of Mapleton organisations working together to create a space for people to connect and learn together – funding challenges and all. This event will be run from 3.00pm Tuesday, November 29 at the Nambour Community Centre. The final talk is one of innovation, featuring Orange Sky Laundry which began in 2014 with a free mobile laundry in an old van to help the homeless. Since then, the world first idea has rapidly expanded to five vans in Brisbane, Melbourne, South East Victoria, Sydney and the Gold Coast and has over 270 volunteers. This talk will be at Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre at 12noon on Saturday, December 3. SC CoCB has received funding from the Queensland Community Foundation and Sunshine Coast Council to continue work commenced in 2015. The events are free and refreshments will be provided. For more information or to book a place at one of the workshops please call Ana on 0407 165 308 or email sunshinecoast@cocb.org.au

White Ribbon Day
Contributed by Bill Richardson White Ribbon Ambassador for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland There are two important days in my Calendar UN International Women's Day (March 8 every year) and UN White Ribbon Day (November 25 every year). White Ribbon is Australia's campaign against violence against women. It is about standing up, and speaking out, and making women's safety a man's issue too. If you are going to be in Maleny on Friday, November 25, you will find information tables from 10.00am to 11.30am outside Maleny Newsagency, and from 11.30am to 2.00pm outside the IGA Supermarket. We appreciate both IGA and Maleny Newsagency allowing us to use the space outside their businesses. We will be selling White Ribbons for $2.00.
We will also have fact sheets such as "What can men do?" You might also like to visit Maleny's Library which earlier this year agreed to a suggestion that it maintain a website detailing the State Government's response to the Quentin Bryce Special Taskforce on Domestic and Family Violence. The response is to the 140 recommendations by the Taskforce. For obvious reasons, many people may not be able to access this information from their home computer. Learn the story of convict Dr William Redfern The Peachester History Committee invites you to an opportunity to hear Doctor of Law John Dunn speak on Sunday, December 4 at the Peachester Hall. John will share stories on the art of healing in the early days of European settlement in Australia and speak of the contribution made by Dr William Redfern. This remarkable physician as a young ship’s surgeon was sentenced to death, allegedly having been involved in the British fleet mutiny at the Nore. Committed to life imprisonment, he was transported to the penal colony upon Norfolk
Island. His services were so highly valued that he was emancipated and returned to Sydney, where he served at the Rum Hospital and became family physician and surgeon to Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Since 1998, John has resided on the Gold Coast. He retired as a Magistrate in NSW Local Courts and held a commission as a coroner for 31 years as well as practicing criminal law. His speech will be at midday and lunch is provided. If you are interested in attending please RSVP to 5494 9846 by Thursday, December 1.

The Beerwah Lions Club held their recent dinner meeting at Club Glasshouse and the guest speaker for the evening was Dianne Hobson, Chairperson of Lions Regional Prevent Sight and Hearing Loss. Addressing the meeting, Dianne said Diabetic Retinopathy, Age Related Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma were the main causes of vision loss. She emphasised the need for people with a family history of these complaints, as well as people over the age of fifty, to have regular eye checks. Vision already lost to these complaints is not restorable, she said, although if detected early the conditions can usually be managed to prevent further loss. Dianne also passed around special spectacles that allowed the Lions to experience
the symptoms of these complaints, by mimicking the type of vision loss they cause. Dianne then showed some videos clips explaining the work of special hearing dogs. She said it cost around $30,000 to train each dog, which were usually sourced from council pounds. The dogs become very attentive companion dogs, constantly alert for sounds like the phone, babies crying, smoke alarms, door bells ringing, etc. They are also alert for dropped personal items like wallets. In thanking Dianne for her talk, Lion Bob Banner told her she was performing a great service to the community.
Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Contributed by Kerry Gillam Glasshouse held their second last meeting last week for 2016, and with not long to go before the Christmas break, we have our sights set on a bright New Year. In Toastmasters, where every meeting is not only educational, it is friendly and fun, we have had three new members join us within six months, and what a delight they all are. Barbara, one of the newbies, recently attended her daughter’s wedding and at the last meeting she proudly revealed that with new-found
confidence, she gave a rousing speech at the reception, received by an enthusiastic audience. To think that six months ago she had been dreading the thought of making a speech. Barbara has come a long way in a short space of time and we are extremely proud of her. Glasshouse Toastmasters recommences on January 19, 2017. If you need help with speech writing, confidence building, or just want to meet new people, we are the club for you. For more information call Martine on 5496 9855 or Kerry on 5494 0161.
Caloundra Family History Research Contributed by Roz Kuss On Wednesday, November 9, Mr Bill Kitson from Witta visited the Family History Research resource centre to give a mapping demonstration. Both Hinterland and Coastal members attended, and learnt about Topographic, Cadastral and Thematic maps. Now retired, Bill’s 45 year career in surveying, and as the esteemed founder/curator of the Queensland Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying means he is highly qualified in the field. He explained that early mapping commenced Bill Kitson and Caloundra Family History Research VP Roz Kuss
in what is now Queensland in 1839, using the system from England, describing selected ‘runs’ in the ‘feature’ surveys. This old system continued until 1862 when the Torrens system, which is used today, came into being and ‘runs’ were cut up into smaller farms, to be sold as freehold land. Caloundra Family History Research has more than 700 maps in their cabinet, all available for research at the resource centre. A visitor’s fee of $5.00 allows members of the public to attend the resource centre to hear speakers at general meetings, or to research their family. Further details are available from Roz on 5493 1197 or on the group’s website at www.caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au The secretary can be contacted on caloundrafamilyres@y7mail.com and visitors can attend in person at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club, Gate 2, Pierce Avenue, Little Mountain.

NOVEMBER 23 2016
Contributed by Janet Kitchin This month’s lunch meeting for the Glasshouse Country View Club was held last Wednesday and our Guest Speaker was Phil Brocklehurst of Compass Assistance Dogs – and he was accompanied by Bentley, his dog in training. Phil has been training dogs for the last 24 years, initially for seeing eye dogs for the vision impaired and then for Compass, who train dogs to assist children suffering from autism. The dogs do great work in helping children manage on a day to day basis with everyday life, venturing out in public and going to school, etc. The program uses mainly rescue dogs and it is sponsored by groups and businesses – they hope to go on to provide dogs to people suffering with post
traumatic stress disorder and returned servicemen. Two new members were presented with their badges – we hope that Irani and Glenda will have a long and enjoyable association with the club. Our last get together for the year will be our Christmas party on December 7. Any ladies who would like to join us or are interested in joining our club should contact either Lynda on 5494 7875 or Maree on 5494 6956 for more information. The trouble with other banks is you never talk to the same person twice. Whether it’s face to face or on the phone, if you ever have a question you have to explain yourself again and again. School News Mooloolah Students visit Barcelona
This term at Mooloolah State School the Year 5 students had to present a model of Barcelona. This was a part of the Spanish Curriculum and the students were on a mission to re-create the city of Barcelona whilst pretending to be town planners. They had to present to the class in Spanish and add attractions and places to their model cities and PowerPoints. The students did a fantastic job and there were some wonderful models. They used cardboard, recyclable materials, flags, pictures, maps, PowerPoint presentations and a whole lot more, including their imaginations. They spoke fluent Spanish sentences and told their story of their towns and why they were putting the attractions where they did. The students were very proud of their work, as was their teacher, Senor Mark Dueble. Some of the students may even go on to enter the Spanish speaking competitions in the near future; and there is every indication they will continue to excel in this subject next year. Well done to all the Year 5 students for their marvellous work in Spanish.

Khaki for a cause
Contributed by Deb Ives Each year Beerwah State School Student Leaders hold a Khaki Day to raise money for Wildlife Warriors. The day also raises student awareness of the importance of everyone in the community being able to do something to help look after the environment. The night before, student leaders gather to get ready for Khaki Day and also have some end of year fun. This year the students enjoyed a chat with Jess from Wildlife Warriors about her work at Australia Zoo.
Year 1 students at Beerwah State School have been learning about ‘Yesterday and Today’. The students enjoyed looking at a collection of memorabilia owned by Year 1 Teacher, Ms Melville. The collection showed the children that while some things have changed (a lot), some have stayed the same. The students also wrote questions about the ‘Olden Days’ and had fun asking them to the school's loyal reading volunteers. What a great morning everyone had, including teachers Ms Melville and Mrs Mann who enjoyed reminiscing as well.

You Said It However
Congratulations to the Council for the 'disability compliant' bridge into the Showgrounds. However, having spent a huge amount on this great structure, why is there no path on the other side? First you must traverse grass and then gravel, passing through a gateway that becomes rutted and muddy in every typical wet Maleny period. Frances Harper Maleny
Pathways to connections
I read with great mirth the comment from Cr McKay in regards to ‘Keeping our communities connected’. The pathway mentioned was first raised by the families of the Rivers Edge Estate back in 2012, as there was only the very narrow road for school children and pedestrians to walk on, and there have been several contacts with council over the last couple of years. If a safety issue like this took so long while stated as being on top of council’s agenda, I would hate to see how long any minor issues would take. Terry Lenz Mooloolah Valley
Councillor conservatism
Donald Trump's current wife has posed naked for the camera. Considering the sycophancy starting to be shown to the next President of the United States, I hope the spouses of current political leaders don't feel they have to emulate her. Husbands and wives of our councillors: don't even think about it. I don't know why there's speculation and conjecture as to whether Donald Trump will keep his pre-election promises: in Australia politicians break their word all the time. Ian Pollock Witta
What a difference our words make! Back when I was a kid growing up, with regards to putting our rubbish in the bin, we were all urged to "Do the Right Thing - Keep Australia Beautiful!" as opposed to "Stop being a litterbug!"
Send your letter to email: editorial@gcnews.com.au fax: 5438 7446 post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519
As we were taught, it's always better to say something positive than negative. When we showed appreciation or said "thank you" to the shop assistant, they would always say "You're welcome!" and wish us a pleasant day! Have you noticed what is happening nowadays? Who told them they all had to reply in the negative as part of their standard ‘pleasantries’ with customers? And they're all doing it! At one transaction this afternoon, each time I said "thank you", the girl at the teller responded by saying "Not a problem" and "No worries". After three or four of these utterances, it got me so annoyed that I ended up saying back: "Oh, I didn't expect it to be a problem!" (She didn't know what to say to that!) This is a real training point for managers to be aware of and ensure their tellers and assistants are using only positive phrases. I think phrases and slang words can "have their day" and this negative pair have certainly had theirs! So next time you are replied to with: "Not a problem" or "No worries", just reply back: "Oh, I didn't expect it to be a problem!" And wish them a lovely day! Lynda M Utting Beerwah
Don’t forget the jobs
Gaby Luft wrote in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News (Nov 16, 2016) that we should “Forget the loss of jobs” when considering new State legislation. The Greens like Gabby have long held the view that jobs are not important. Work is a blessing that enables families to have a decent standard of living and contribute to our nation. Jobs give pride and purpose; put food on the table and pay the home mortgage. Jobs allow families and communities to grow. For the Greens to suggest we forget the job losses when forming legislation is shameful and again shows how out of touch the Greens are with everyday people. Greg Newton Balmoral Ridge

Farewell
I would like to say goodbye to all the staff at Beerwah Woolworths and to the loyal customers who, through the past nine years of my service, have shared with me their stories, thoughts and advice. I am graced with having watched families and hearts grow. I’m sorry that I was not able to bid farewell in person but due to an injury I sustained at work, it had since been decided that I am no longer ‘fit for duty’ and my employment has been terminated. So goodbye and well wishes. Donna (Some of you would know me as ‘the deaf lady’)

You can’t beat the heat … or can you! ‘Every day is a day closer to rain’ is the mantra that runs through my head at this time of year when the temperatures soar and the gap between rainfall events can be in the many weeks. Trees shed their leaves in a fantastic manoeuvre that not only reduces their water consumption but also mulches the soil around their roots. Lawns start to crisp and recently planted stock can struggle. The key to keeping plants green and lush during this time, is not just pouring precious water from the tap over them to keep the moisture up, but to mulch, mulch and (for something different) mulch the soil with organic matter. Mulch not only improves moisture retention, but keeps the soil cool during the extreme heat spells encouraging the all-important soil life that will feed and improve the health of your plants. How much mulch do you need? In many ways, the more mulch the better – the main limitations are availability, cost and time to spread it. However, it’s very much the case that anything is better than nothing. Mulching of whole garden beds or planting areas is great, but if you have trees scattered in lawns make sure you mulch to at least the width of the canopy and certainly no less than a metre around each tree. Come and check out our coir fibre blocks, palm fibre mulch mats and tree guards for great products to help establish your plants.
Environment Good report for local waterways The annual Healthy Waterways and Catchments Report Card has been released, and our local waterways have done well. According to the annual audit of the state of our rivers and creeks, the Pumicestone catchment has improved from a B- to a B+; both the Mooloolah and Maroochy catchments have jumped from C+ to B; and the Stanley catchment maintained its B result. The report card shows that the Pumicestone, Mooloolah and Maroochy catchments have improved their condition due to a significant decrease in pollutant loads, and the community is very highly satisfied with the waterways and their ability to use them. However, sediment pollutant loads generated through rural channel erosion and a rapidly growing urban footprint continue to impact waterway condition and benefits. To counter this, the report states that local councils, industry and the community are working to reduce sediment loads through a number of key projects across the region, including the Pumicestone Passage Action Plan. The Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection, Dr Steven Miles, said the Queensland Government was proud to support a partnership with Healthy Waterways and Catchments which began some 16 years ago. “South East Queensland is a dynamic and growing region, so it is vital we work together to achieve the right balance between development and preserving our natural environment,” Dr Miles said. “We know the release of sediment from urban areas is an ongoing challenge. “The government is working closely with Healthy Waterways and Catchments, local councils and the building and construction sector to reduce sediment emissions from urban building and development sites. “We also continue to work closely with the horticulture and grazing industries on best management practice programs. These are important programs which aim to keep valuable agricultural soil out of our waterways and in the paddocks where it belongs.”

with Sue Tanner I know I’m not the first to wonder where the year has gone or why we have Christmas decorations in the shops in October! Personally, I find Christmas a bit of a trial and I don’t decorate until the 1st of December … is that a ‘Bah! Humbug’ I hear? On to Friends news. We are getting excited about the new building and the real retail space we will have to sell Friends products. We will be able to greatly expand our range and have some new and interesting things. The committee are looking into suggestions for products made at our last meeting and are trying to source as many as possible, locally. We may also have space for the work of local craft people so watch this space. Getting back to Christmas – for the bird lovers/watchers in your family, our book ‘The Birds of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve’ would make an excellent gift, as would a bird poster. We also have caps, frisbees, coloured pencils, pens and a range of cards, all good stocking fillers and a way to help the Friends. All our funds go to helping the volunteers and protecting the rainforest. The guides have been busy lately with many students of all ages coming to walk in the forest. I recently went with a group of Year Four children who were a delight, so enthusiastic and full of questions. One of the boys really wanted to see a snake and was beside himself when we found a carpet python quietly curled up quite close to the track. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Living - Arts Forest Art Collective
Forest Art Collective is an open community made up of local artists and craft persons. Our goal is to inspire community participation in arts by providing workshops, exhibitions and opportunity for community members to showcase their own works in the gallery, as well as offering a relaxing, creative and welcoming space where everyone can share, learn and be inspired. Located in the little red cottage at 20 Coral street Maleny; the Forest Art Collective operates as a working gallery – our artists are busy creating and you can watch the ‘artists in residence’ and learn firsthand more about their different media and techniques. Some artists provide informal tuition, and others, more structured workshops. Thursday’s are ‘Community Art Days’ where we invite people to drop in, have a cuppa and be nurtured in a creative and artistic space.
Recently added to our gallery is a Printmaking Studio. We now have a large public-access printing press, available for use by local artists. Forest Art Collective holds monthly exhibitions in our Green Room – these are either solo exhibitions from members of our Collective or combined with other local artists or groups. Our aim is to foster artistic growth and collaboration in a creative and supportive space. Open from Monday to Saturday 10.00am until 2.00pm, for more details contact Karen on 0427 607 628 or check out www.instagram. com/forestartcollective/ or www.facebook.com/ ForestArtCollective/ You can check out some of the wonderful work at their Christmas Makers Market on Saturday, December 3 at Forest Art Collective community space and gallery from 8.00am- 12.00noon.

Open Studio weekend
The Pre-Christmas Open Studio Trail will see eight artists open their studios to the public on November 26 and 27. Come and meet Chris Blake, Jacky Lowry, Marilyn Dale-Cook, Dorothy Peal, Kaye Leach, Annie McIntosh, Barbara Willcocks, and Judi Parkinson (whose studio will be open only Saturday). They produce work in a variety of mediums including watercolours, acrylics, oils, ceramics and photography to name a few. They are always happy to chat about their work and demonstrate. This is the perfect opportunity to buy unique gifts, handmade by the artist you have met!
The Pre-Christmas Studio Trail takes in a beautiful drive across the Blackall Range from Mapleton, Flaxton and Maleny and on to Harper Creek, Peachester and Landsborough. Our feature artist this month is new to Arts Connect Inc, but old to the industry: well-known landscape artist Chris Blake. He has been painting for 30 years, moving to Queensland in 1990. He taught at the Caloundra learning co-op from 1992 to 1998 and became a master pastellist in 2004. He built and opened his studio in 2012. Chris has won many awards including the Maleny Art Award, The Hervey Bay Open, the PSA Winter Show Open and the landscape section twice. He has also been a finalist at the Kenilworth Art Prize twice and in
numerous other awards over the years. Chris is an active tutor, this year having workshops in the UK and as far afield as Darwin. Last year he travelled to NSW, Victoria and South Australia as well as here in Queensland doing workshops in pastel and oils. Next year he will go to Norfolk Island as a tutor.

Father Kevin Smith – Catholic Church The death this year of Muhammad Ali drew our attention to the achievements of someone who was known as the greatest. This title Ali gave himself but nevertheless few people would challenge it, especially if you were to step into the boxing ring with him. Ali possessed an athletic ability and boxing skills that perhaps deserved the title. But since his death many people have come to hear of other challenges and fights of his life that demanded not so much of the pugilist’s skills but still required tenacity and perseverance. Muhammad Ali battled fifteen rounds against the ignorance of racial prejudice, fifteen rounds against religious bigotry, fifteen rounds against the injustice and degradation of poverty, and of course his fifteen hard and long rounds against a debilitating disease and personal suffering. To none of these could he give a knockout win, but many people would agree that he was ahead on points. We too step into the ring with our worries and challenges. Most of humanity has to battle a foe that will never be overcome with a knockout punch. The Word of God, Jesus Christ, also
confronted many of these same foes and has given us advice and a lived example of how to face them. To take up one’s cross is to look at the world with honesty, to love unconditionally and to do so with perseverance. Jesus did that long before that chunk of tree was placed on his back and he encourages us to live in a similar way. Sacrificial love means that we love without looking for return; it means we are going to face life with a respect for others, be ready to forgive and try to understand people. It is certainly a challenge, so expect a few bruises and disappointments, some hurts and humiliation; after all it is a cross, but not a cross that ends in death. Rather, in following Christ’s way of life, to take up our cross leads to some genuine delight, some amazing surprises and it always leads to life. We will experience God’s greatness alive in us.

Home Bali-style Garden
Gardens inspired by the landscapes of Bali and other tropical destinations have become very popular, especially since the arrival of TV garden makeover shows. The Balinese garden can be thought of as an outdoor living area, well decorated with plants but providing a relaxed space for people to use and to contemplate. The main features of a Bali-style garden are: Outdoor living areas, including thatched pavilions and pergolas. These will not only look good but help you enjoy using your garden. Usually they have some sort of thatched roof. Bali grass (alang alang) is traditionally used, but brushwood or reed materials are also available. The shaggy style of thatching is best for a Balinese theme. The more neatly trimmed thatching is more appropriate for an African-style gazebo. While less tropical-looking than thatch, wooden shingles (sirap) or terracotta tiles are alternatives. Decorative terracotta roof ornaments at the top and corners will add that exotic look. If you have limited space or perhaps can't afford the price of a more substantial structure, a thatched umbrella is a way to add that "grass hut" look. Decorative ornaments. Much traditional Balinese art has a religious basis, which explains the variety of symbolism seen expressed on garden statues and other objects. More modern plant and animal motifs are also becoming fashionable.
&Backyard
These can be added to your garden in the form of free-standing statues, wall-mounted plaques, pots or as part of a water feature. Flags and umbrellas. Bali flags, called umbul umbuls, held upright on tall poles are another way of adding a Balinese touch to a tropical garden without making major changes. Fabric covered temple umbrellas (tedung) like those used for ceremonial purposes in Bali are also popular for decorating outdoor areas and verandas. Water features. Water adds a cooling influence and an extra dimension to any garden and the Bali-style garden is no exception. Carved stone bowls or terracotta pots make the simplest water features. Larger containers can be planted up with water plants as miniature water gardens. Complement larger ponds with a water spout in the form of a fish or frog. To take your garden to the next level, create streams, pools and waterfalls with real or artificial rocks. Paths throughout the garden encourage exploration. Large paving squares separated by decorative gravel or miniature groundcovers are great. Lighting and lanterns. Outdoor lighting will dramatically highlight garden features as well as make night-time entertaining easier. A popular way to add a Balinese touch to a garden is by using traditional thatched lanterns. Decorative lanterns carved from stone in a variety
of designs are also widely available. If you are intending to have lights installed in your lanterns, be sure that they are suitable for that purpose. Fences, panels and screens. Plants are one way to hide unattractive views that distract from the secluded resort-style ambience. However, you may have to wait for them to grow, they may not grow big enough, or the spot may simply be unsuitable for planting. A physical screen of bamboo, reed or something similar has the advantage of being instant and adding visual appeal. For existing fences, walls or other surfaces you want to renovate with tropical flair (including the undersides of patio roofs), there are a range of screening products in panels or rolls. Use plants with tropical style. Palms and cycads, flamboyant flowers, and brightly coloured foliage plants work best. Modern interpretations incorporate plants from all over the world (eg. bromeliads) if they have the "look". The good news is that you may already have many of the basics in your backyard, like palms and frangipani.

Plants for a Balinese-style garden Balinese gardens, inspired by the lush tropical gardens of Bali, rely on form, structure and foliage colour, rather than on flowers to bring life and movement to the landscape. Most gardens in Queensland will have some tropical species such as palms, hibiscus, and frangipani. So, try to build on what you’ve already got instead of starting from scratch.

Modern Bali-style garden design tends to emphasise foliage for ease of maintenance and year-round interest. To create splashes of vibrant colour, use some flowering plants. But use them sparingly – Balistyle means lush, tropical and colourful. Use the flowers to provide decorations for your statues, water features and table adornments. To create swathes of colour and texture, mass plant groundcovers around the base of your trees and shrubs. Use bold accent plants around the garden to create focal points. Incorporating some topical fruit trees or herbs and spices characteristic of the region – like chilli, basil, kaffir lime and galangal ginger – is a great way to add real flavour to the garden. Plant suggestions: Choose your plants well. Don’t make the mistake of trying to use too many different types of tropical plants. Groups of the same plants, instead of using them singularly, works better in the Bali-style garden. Remember you are using foliage and colour to complement the overall purpose of the garden. The structures – such as paths, water features and pagodas – shouldn’t be overwhelmed by the planting design. Some plants to use include: cordyline, frangipani, gingers, heliconias, hibiscus, elephant ears, bromeliads (of course), palms, cycads, maranta,
calathea, ctenanthe, croton, dracaena, sisal hemp, philodendron, bamboo (clumping varieties such as ‘Buddha’s Belly’), black mondo grass, doryanthes, tall ornamental grasses (such as Tiger grass), bird of paradise, travellers palm, coleus, Brazilian red cloak, iresine, rhoeo, adenium ‘desert rose’, crown of thorns, Bangkok rose, ixora, canna, allamanda, orchids, bougainvillea, ferns, Fijian fire plant, michelia, sacred bamboo, gold dust plant Photinia. Bali-style dictionary These are a few meanings for some of the words you may see when shopping for Bali-style bits and pieces. Alang alang - thatching grass Bagong - a comical character of folklore Barong - a lion-like character (fights the evil Rangda) Bale - a building Dewi Sri - goddess of rice (prosperity) Ganesha - Hindu god with the head of an elephant Hanuman - Hindu god with the form of a monkey Jepun - frangipani Mimpi - dream Rangda - evil witch or female demon character Rimba - forest Sari - essence Taman - garden or park

&Backyard When soil and water don’t mix
Increase Productivity With Our
SOLAR PANEL CLEANING SERVICE FROM $5.00 Per Panel
The dry hot weather has meant that for many of us, the top layer of your garden and lawn soil has become dry … unless you’ve been religiously watering, and who can do that with the price of water these days? This can lead to the problem of having water repellent (or hydrophobic) soils, meaning that when it rains, the water will just run off and not soak in. The same problem can happen in pot plants which dry out. Soils become hydrophobic mainly through the build up of waxy organic acids created by the decomposition of organic matter (like grass clippings, compost and mulch). This decomposition is a desirable thing, as it also improves soil structure, feeds soil organisms and releases nutrients for your plants. But its downside is these waxy organic acids. The way it works is that water has adhesive forces (attraction of water molecules to other substances) which cause the water to spread out and cling to other surfaces such as soil particles. The organic acids are polar compounds with hydrophobic (water repellent) and hydrophilic (water attractant) ends. During soil dehydration the shape of the compound changes, so that the hydrophobic surface is exposed to the air and water in the soil pores. When the soil moisture falls below a critical value in the soil, the soil becomes hydrophobic. It takes as little as 3-6% hydrophobic materials in the soil to cause wetting problems. There are some other causes of non-wettable soils too. A recent fire will change the chemical and physical structure of soil, making it water repellent for a period. An excess of micro-fungal growth in the soil will cause water to runoff rather than soak in. Ants don’t like water when they are trying to build their little kingdoms underground, so they produce waxy chemicals which repel water and make the soil they live in hydrophobic. Generally speaking, once a soil has become severely hydrophobic, it will need your intervention to return to a state where it will absorb water again. The short-term solution is to use a specialised soil wetting agent (not a detergent or a surfactant) to overcome the waxy organic acids and allow the water to spread over and between the soil particles rather than just run water through the soil. Some soil wetters have been blamed for damaging delicate plant roots and killing sensitive micro-organisms. Some of this may be true, so it is a good policy to treat soil wetting agents as a short-term bandaid solution to rapidly fix a problem. Then the best way to keep your soil hydrophilic is to make sure that the soil is in tip-top condition by adding organic matter in the form of compost (which has the organic acids already broken down) and mulches. The aim is to keep the soil moisture at a constant level and maintain a healthy soil ecosystem.

Four friends collaborate in opportunity

Business feature Saver6.com is a global network that has the international buying power to source and select smart products and services worldwide. Becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller is one of the small business owner options promoted by the network which encourages innovation, entrepreneurship and a new business mentality of ‘thinking outside the box’. Damian Hurst currently works fulltime in the mines out at Emerald and is one of the latest Saver6.com small business owners – however utilising a ‘thinking outside of the box’ approach to business, the ownership has been split four ways between friends. Realising the advantages of pooling resources, Damian and his wife Peta have collaborated with good friends Mel and Steve Barrett to jointly become owners in a Saver6.com business. Appreciating that each person brings a unique and useful skill set, having four people involved increases accountability while also lessening the burden. Damian lives in Beerwah but travels to Emerald weekly to work a week on / week off roster. Having previously worked in defence and farming and with experience in the shed and sheeting industry, the opportunity to deliver and install Transportable Shade Sheds to the Emerald area fitted in perfectly with his current work commitments. Damian and his wife Peta had been looking at additional revenue opportunities for a while when a conversation over a few drinks at the pub with good friends Mel and Steve led to potential business opportunities. Mel was already familiar with Transportable Shade Shed products and everything fitted into place. “This just seemed like a great opportunity. With Mel and Steve’s sales backgrounds and my ability to transport the product weekly as well as Peta’s admin background, we all bring something to the business,” explained Damian. “I also have contacts in the mines and local councils and having four of us works much better as we are all accountable and can step in whenever needed.” This collaboration is a great example of the changing face of business, and how innovative thinking can open new opportunities. “Originally I come from a farming background and I can see great opportunities to sell Transportable Shade Sheds in the Emerald area – which I have to travel to weekly anyway,” said Damian. Working in a rural area, Damian sees massive potential in machinery shed sales as well as endless possibilities for land owners wanting easy-to-install weatherproof sheds that don’t have to be concreted in and can be easily setup … even on unlevel ground. While the group of friends have extensive experience between them, belonging to the Saver6.com network also allows them to access additional online marketing and mentoring support such as direct target marketing, social media support tools, and access to global insights into motivation and business goals. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Emerald area please contact Damian on 0408 877 498. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss, or look at business options that may work well with your current industry, then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.
Please call Damian Hurst, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

It’s warming up and snakes are again on the move, being seen more often in and around our gardens. According to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, over 25 species of snakes are found in the local area. The most commonly reported snakes are the harmless carpet python, common tree snake, and yellow-faced whip snake. However, Australia has many of the world’s most venomous snakes and some of them may be found in and around our region, including the eastern brown, red-bellied black and rough scaled snakes. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service advises that snakes usually prefer to retreat when encountered, but can become defensive if threatened. Most victims of snakebites are those who have tried to kill or interfere with the animal. So it’s best just to leave them alone. Snakes will move considerable distances. Preventing them entering your yard may be difficult, so reducing the risk of snakebite is best. To reduce the chances of snake bite incidents: • wear long trousers and gum boots to knee length in high risk areas • remove rubbish piles and sheets of tin providing shelter • be careful around caged birds especially chickens. These attract rodents which in turn attract snakes • carry a torch outside at night • wear thick gloves when gardening in high risk areas • be familiar with snakebite first aid including the proper use of compression bandages Snakes are protected under the Nature Conservation Act., and keeping a snake requires a licence from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. If you need assistance with a snake in your backyard, there are commercial snake catchers on the Sunshine Coast – just search for them in Google.

reasons why you’re guaranteed to get the best looking lawn in the street from Wild Horse Turf
1 2 3 4 5 6
You’ll get personal service.
When you phone Wild Horse Turf, you’ll speak to the person who will cut your grass for you. We’ll listen to your needs and help you achieve the lawn of your dreams. You’ll get great back-up service and receive our quarterly Turf Tips newsletter, with advice for maintaining your lawn, long after you’ve laid it.
You’ll get the best quality grass.
We’re sure that you’re getting the topmost quality grass, because we grow it ourselves. We use biological fertilising agents for healthier grass that will establish your new backyard faster.
You’ll get the freshest grass.
We’ll cut your turf to order, so you get the freshest turf available. From the moment it’s harvested, turf starts to deteriorate and die. Limiting the time from the paddock to your yard is a great way to give your lawn the best start. When you buy from landscape yards and hardware stores, you risk buying sick turf that’s been sweating on the pallet for days.
You’ll get what you’re paying for.
Our Sapphire soft-leaf buffalo and Empire Zoysia are grown in paddocks that have been certified by Ozbreed, the breeders of Sapphire and Empire. So when you buy turf from us you can be confident that you’re getting what you pay for.
You’ll get a flatter, better-looking lawn.
Because our cutting process still uses people, we offer a hands-on approach to quality control. Because we keep a close eye on each and every slab, you’ll get a more consistent turf and a flatter, better-looking end result.
No trailer? No worries.
Wild Horse Turf values our local customers so we offer a free courtesy trailer for locals to transport their new lawns home. Or ask about our affordable delivery and laying rates.
Orders over 100m will receive a 10kg bucket of our specialty turf fertiliser
which contains the nutrients that are essential for early root establishment and healthy plant growth

Turkey season!
Those of you lucky enough to live near some bushland will have been enjoying the Spring-time breeding season for lots of our local wildlife. The birds are nesting, the kangaroos are breeding, the water dragons are frolicking. But with Spring also comes a frantic increase in the activity of the male brush turkey. It’s their breeding season too – and males are busy building the biggest mulch mounds they can. You see, it’s the turkey’s way of attracting the ladies. In the world of the brush turkey, Mrs Turkey sizes up a potential mating partner by the size of his mulch pile. The bigger his pile, the more attractive he becomes. This means that Mr Turkey will be spending as much time and energy as possible scratching and scraping mulch and leaf litter in a frenzied attempt to make his mound bigger than any other male’s mound in the area. So you see in the turkey world … bigger really is better. This is good news for Mrs Turkey – as she lays her eggs in the mound and leaves the egg-rearing to him; but bad news for the gardener. All that time and money put into being waterwise and mulching the garden can be demolished before you know it, resulting in frustration, probably a few expletives aimed at the culprits, and maybe even some evil thoughts involving chopping blocks. But, like them or loathe them, brush turkeys are protected by law and they are an important part of our local environment. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service offer some tips to gardeners with brush turkeys: • Consider using a gravel or pebble mulch instead of leaf and chip mulch. • Place rocks around your plants so that the turkey won’t scratch them out or damage their roots. • Lay chicken wire over the mulch and peg it down or use rocks to hold it in place. • Have a sacrificial pile of mulch somewhere close to where he has his mound. That way he may use it instead of your garden. It’s a cheap way to keep him happy. • Don’t destroy his mound – it won’t stop him and he’ll just double his efforts. • Don’t attract turkeys by feeding them. • As a very last resort, a wildlife remover may be able to catch and relocate the animal. Finally, if you’re at your wit’s end, consider moving, as the turkey will beat you every time.

Sport Local champion recognised for a great year Cameron Taylor, owner of San Training Centre in Beerwah, has again been recognised at the University of the Sunshine Coast Sports Awards. Cameron received the 'Continued Excellence Award' which is one of the highest awards in the University system. It is awarded to students who have previously received the Half and Full Blue Awards and have continued to achieve a high standard at National and International Championships. 2016 has been a successful year
for Cameron who has won the Taekwondo State and National titles and also won two divisions at the Australian University Games and was a member of the 2016 Olympic shadow team. Cameron, who is currently studying part time for a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science at the University, is now preparing for his biggest comp of the year at the Oceania Championships. He will travel to Fiji this weekend as part of the Australian National Taekwondo Team and is hoping for a strong result to boost international ranking points towards selection for the 2020 Olympics. Check out www.santkd.com or search San Training Centre on Facebook to stay updated.

Just for Laughs I love you
Jack wakes up with a horrible hangover and a throbbing black eye. The first thing he sees is a single rose on the side table and a note from his wife: “Dear, breakfast is made. I’ve gone shopping to make you your favourite dinner tonight. I love you!” He stumbles to the kitchen and, sure enough, there’s breakfast. “Joe,” he says to his son, “What happened last night?” “You came home soused and got that black eye tripping over a chair.” “So, why the rose, breakfast, and sweet note from your mother?” “Oh, that. Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take off your clothes, you screamed, ‘Leave me alone, I’m married!’”
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Just taste it
A guy comes into a restaurant and asks the waiter for a bowl of soup. The waiter brings him the soup and walks away. The man calls him back over, points a finger at the soup, and says, "Taste it." "I don't have to taste it, just tell me what's wrong, and I'll fix it," says the waiter. "Too hot, too cold, too salty?" "I said taste it!" says the man. "Okay, no need to get excited, I'll do as you say," says the waiter. "Hmm, now let's see ... where's the spoon?" And the man says, "AHA!" Contributed by Phil from Mooloolah

Week beginning 23/11/2016 SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 With Mercury meeting up with Jupiter and then Saturn, you are well equipped to make an informed, positive and serious decision. This may have something to do with contacts with invalids or hospitals. It may even be time to attend to charitable affairs. It’s up to you to choose the direction and make choices about the intensions put forward. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 You might get noticed for your excellence in a project. Perhaps you can throw your devotion and passion to one special person or cause and that brings a lot of attention your way. There are positive vibes under planetary energies in Sagittarius that can lead to a serious private decision. This should involve your fondest hopes and wishes. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 With the huge Sagittarius energies on the month ahead Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn bring a positive attitude or good news with business studies for a common agenda. Your social zone lights up with expansive big plans for the future. There is an exciting phase ahead of you as work opens up the doors to fresh options and out of the box ideas. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Seeing the best in others is a positive thing but don’t allow that attitude to blind you to their failings. This is seen in the light of Sagittarius energies, arriving in your chart, and so it is likely that con-artists may abound either verbally or by emails. Just keep to very practical thinking about the boundaries and strengths of any career project.
ARIES March 21 - April 20 There is a big decision to be made about a trip in respect to your future career. It would be best for you not to press your luck or push things too far. Your ambition may be commendable but not if it fires the desire to excess. Say “yes” to any invitation and be ready for a happy surprise. Free yourself of any responsibilities that take up too much time. TAURUS April 21 - May 21 Commitments that require a huge investment of time, money or emotions should not be entered into lightly. Relationships for better or worse are intense, passionate and consuming this week. Perhaps you can find a project that produces results. An outing sees a friend pressured under an onerous debt of obligation. Try to put it off for now. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 There are some events occurring in your chart that relate back to February and so this could be a really important new bond being formed now. Intense close relationships are difficult if they have strong needs for personal power. Venus and Pluto stand together in your chart regarding money affairs and indicates someone to assist with support. CANCER June 22 - July 21 You can expect mutual considerations to work out between friends and loved ones. Keep a look out for some business profits. Towards months end it is likely that hidden details are going to come to light that some will welcome and some will not. Things go much better if you scale down trying to deal with somebody’s stinginess now.
LEO July 23 - August 22 Take full advantage of the planets Mercury and Jupiter bringing you a lovely opportunity to show off your gifts with the written word. These may be on gift cards, presents, or even in emails. You may become fully focused on making the most of a particular passion, perhaps it is holiday travel plan. Romance and passions have increased energy. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 This week features a most positive thinking Mercury / Jupiter aspect, bringing smart practical approaches in any home or family matter. You may need to remind yourself that a serious decision may need to be made and you are mentally equipped to make a solid one. Planets entering Sagittarius sees you successfully forge ahead with help. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The recent full Moon struck the area of your chart concerning shared assets. The current stars could require something from you financially, perhaps in a technical way of putting your affairs in order. You seriously look at your values of life that bring you comfort and security. Put monies aside for future debts that need to be paid now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 A long term aspect now comes up in your chart under a Jupiter influence. You sense its surge and it does suggest a back room flavour about changing your personal environment. This could be with regards to neighbourhood affairs, your work place, an online community, local events as well as your siblings. Avoid bully tactics at this time.

Dental Excel - caring for the Hinterland community for over 19 yrs Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years’ experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. Moving to Australia with his (now) wife was the ultimate in lifestyle change, and settling on the Sunshine Coast was a dream come true. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and to retain those annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. The introduction of 3D printed guides now ultimately means a safer, less invasive and precise result for the patient. Dr O’Sullivan has a passion for continuing education, having studied extensively at the world-renowned Pankey Institute in Miami, Florida USA.
Finbarr believes each patient deserves to have a personalised plan for their dental health, and with Dental Excel you are in safe hands. Dr O’Sullivan also holds a post graduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile. He has a keen interest in his patients’ overall health and treats them with a holistic approach. Whether it’s recognising the signs of childhood sleep apnoea or treating migraine or muscular issues in adults, these issues are fundamental to a patient’s wellbeing and also the causes of many dental problems. Finbarr receives a great deal of satisfaction and fulfilment when helping relieve someone of pain or guiding them on their journey to dental health. In his spare time Finbarr enjoys travelling, playing sport and savouring the beautiful outdoors of the local surroundings. Quality time with his young family is also high on his priorities.
DENTAL EXCEL IMPLANT CENTRE Dental Implants are available for all types of cases, where there is suitable bone. Ranging from replacement of a single missing tooth with an implant and crown, to replacement of conventional full dentures with fixed appliances such as All-on-4, or All-on-6 type restorations...and all in between. Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan and Dr David Marley work exclusively with MIS Implants and the MIS Implant Centre in Melbourne and the great majority of implants are placed using the MIS M-GUIDE which is computer generated and enables very precise and atraumatic implant placement. Dental Excel is investing in the latest technology to enable the treatment to be completed in the shortest time compatible with a successful outcome. If you are contemplating implants or fixed dentures please book a free comprehensive consultation to ascertain your suitability for implant treatment and a no obligation quotation.
