FROM THE EDITOR ARE you familiar with the term earworm or stuck song syndrome? Well, I think I might currently be affected as I have the old ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ song going around and around in my head. I expect there is a pretty logical explanation as I don’t think I have ever written so many stories, snippets and listings for upcoming Christmas events, carols and festive fun in all the years I have been doing this job. I am pretty sure that after the social restrictions placed on our community since Easter 2020 that we are all keen for an excuse to pop on our Santa hats or whatever novelty festive headwear takes our fancy and head out to enjoy a bit of not-so-socially-distanced fun with our friends and neighbours.

Farmers share important message PURE Gold Pineapples has launched its ‘If you grow ‘em, know ‘em’ campaign in support of the McGrath Foundation. The campaign is a tongue-in-cheek message designed to put a fun spin on a very serious message about the importance of breast awareness. It will be backed by a fundraising initiative to help fund McGrath breast care nurses who support those experiencing breast cancer and their families across Australia. Pure Gold Pineapples will sell special pines throughout summer with a portion of sales going to the McGrath Foundation. About three quarters of the Foundation’s McGrath breast care nurses are located in regional and rural Australia. “Being a regionally located business we understand the additional challenges faced by breast cancer patients living in remote and rural areas and we want to help ensure that all patients, regardless of where they live, can access the care they need,” Anthony Dobson, general manager of Tropical Pines, said. Many people have been affected by breast cancer and know all too well the significant impact this has on Australian families, including Beerwah pineapple

Ian said Roslyn had been diagnosed with breast cancer 18 months before losing her battle had lived in Rockhampton for many years. Having grown up in our local community, she attended Beerwah State School before going on to Caboolture High many locals would remember her. “Everyone across the Pure Gold organisation from the growers to the office staff are passionate about supporting McGrath breast care nurses,” Anthony said. Tracy Bevan, McGrath Foundation ambassador and director, said that at the McGrath Foundation “we say, ‘if you grow ‘em, know ‘em’”. “We encourage women (and men) to learn how to check your breasts and, most importantly, to seek medical attention if you notice anything unusual,” Tracy said. “Early detection of breast cancer while it is still small and confined to the breast provides the best chance for treatment to be effective. It’s so important that if you find a lump or notice any changes to your breasts that you seek medical attention straight away.

Petition calls for stronger puppy breeding restrictions
Council to take puppy breeding battle to state conference
By Greg Brown
By Greg Brown
LOCAL dog lover and Sunshine Coast Kennel Club member Helen Weil is not alone in her disgust at the appalling treatment of animals in illegal puppy farms. Ms Weil says changes to state legislation made in 2018 restricting dog breeding need to go much further to protect all breeding dogs and puppies. “It’s obvious that Queensland is seriously lagging behind other states in making sure that animal welfare and ethics are the key considerations, not profit-driven puppy breeding,” Ms Weil said. “The recent outrage at the intensive puppy breeding facility proposal at Landsborough – where over 400,000 people objected to [Sunshine Coast] council – shows that, in the eyes of many, the system is not working. “At the meeting where the council voted to reject the proposal, many councillors spoke of the need for greater state government regulation and enforcement. “I’ve raised this on a number of occasions with the relevant state minister, even sponsored petitions
calling for stronger action, but each time the response is the same – nothing more is to be done. “It’s just not good enough and as a humane society we need to treat ‘man’s best friend’ with much more dignity, respect and kindness than we do now,” Ms Weil said. In an attempt to collectively channel the outrage raised by the Landsborough development proposal, Ms Weil has once again sponsored a parliamentary petition imploring the government to go much further to strengthen provisions to stop the exploitation of dogs for profit. “I ask that anyone who cares about the welfare of dogs and wants to see the exploitation stop, please sign the petition so we can tell our politicians that the current legislation is not working and it must be changed.” The parliamentary petition can be found at www.parliament.qld.gov. au/Work-of-the-Assembly/Petitions/ Petition-Details?id=3638 or scan the QR code above.
MOVES are afoot from within the Sunshine Coast Council to step up the pressure for reform of puppy breeding legislation and planning requirements following the recent report in GC&M News, November 9 edition, on calls to restrict intensive dog breeding (‘Calls for more restrictions on intensified dog breeding’). Cr Joe Natoli, who spoke passionately during the debate over the legitimacy of the Landsborough puppy breeding facility at the council’s October 14 meeting, has put his hand up to lead the challenge. “I have raised this [issue] with all councillors in a closed discussion session and it was agreed that I be given the responsibility to put a resolution before council to consider taking the issues to next year’s LGAQ [Local Government Association of Queensland] conference,” Cr Natoli told GC&M News. “I have already met with the two managers responsible for animal control and it was agreed they would provide support in constructing the resolution,” Cr Natoli said.
“Our next meeting is early next year and after that I will meet again with our two managers to formulate the resolution to council.” “I want to ensure we have strong support from other local governments for the banning of these large puppy farms,” Cr Natoli said. He also wants to tackle the growth of rogue backyard dog breeders, saying there were reports of “horrific animal welfare issues with some of these breeders”. “However, the law is cumbersome and not well defined and stronger measures are needed to fast track action that can be taken against these rouge breeders,” he said.

Mysterious development signs appear at Landsborough By Greg Brown IF you’re wondering what the development notice sign is all about on the side of Steve Irwin Way between the Ewen Maddock Dam causeway and Forestry Road, it’s nothing too sinister. The same development signs have been placed in other locations. Unitywater is preparing for the construction of the next major residential stage at Aura and needs to install new water reservoir tanks near the Bruce Highway and connect them to the Ewen Maddock Dam water treatment plant via a new pipeline. Although the sign is nearer to Landsborough, the pipeline will exit off the Steve Irwin Way road reserve, down Old Caloundra Road, onto Hapgood Road, then east along some forestry roads to the site where the new water reservoirs will be constructed. According to reports accompanying the development application to Sunshine Coast Council,
the 9.5km new pipeline follows the boundary of the Beerwah State Forest for about 1.73km, the boundary of the Mooloolah River National Park for about 1.86km and is outside but parallel to the boundary of the Glass House Mountains National Park for about 1.75km. Horizontal directional drilling and auger boring (or micro-tunnelling) is proposed for a number of locations to avoid damaging significant ecological areas. The rest of the alignment will be above ground and require some clearing of vegetation. The ecological assessment report shows that 3.5ha of suitable koala habitat and 2.6ha of habitat suitable for greater gliders will be cleared, along with about 20 hollow-bearing trees along the 15m cleared pipeline alignment. The report states that this will trigger offsets to be provided for koala and greater glider habitats. During the clearing operations, specialist wildlife spotter-catchers will be present. As well, a cultural heritage report was commissioned that, after consultation with representatives of the Kabi Kabi First Nation People, found no items of Aboriginal cultural heritage or historic cultural heritage in the areas along the pipeline’s route. The development signs are part of the standard public consultation process and state that anyone wishing to make a submission can do so before November 29. To read more or to make a submission, go to https:// developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for MCU21/0195.

Easier navigation of Caloundra memorial walkway
Remembrance Day
A NEW online database recently released by the Caloundra RSL Sub Branch will make it easier for relatives of deceased veterans to locate their memorial plaques on the Caloundra headland. Home to 2,400 memorial plaques, visitors can often be overwhelmed by the 1.2km stretch between Shelly Beach and Kings Beach.
ON November 11 RSL sub branches hosted services across our local townships including Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Maleny and Mapleton. The Peachester History Committee held a service at the Peachester Cemetery to honour the service and sacrifice of local diggers and all who have served to ensure our freedom. At Beerwah there was a well-attended service at the Cenotaph in Turner Park. At Glass House Mountains the service was an inside affair, taking advantage of the airconditioned comfort of the RSL club. However, the reverence of the occasion was as strong as ever, with a cenotaph taking pride of place at the front of the gathering. At Mapleton the threatening weather meant the service had to be relocated from the newly refurbished memorial to undercover at the Mapleton State School. Lest we forget.
This online tool will now point users to one of 11 zones along the walkway, reducing the search zone from 1.2km to no more than 80m. The database was developed by the sub branch’s senior vice-president Terry O’Connor with help from memorial walkway coordinator Frank Wratten and other military display volunteers. Those interested in viewing the database directly can go to www.caloundrarsl.org.au/plaquetable.html or go through the Caloundra RSL website at www. caloundrarsl.org.au Those unfamiliar with the area will also find a map of the Caloundra headland as well as GPS coordinates of the 11 zones via the Caloundra RSL website. The memorial walkway was started in 1994 and has now become part of the town’s history. The walkway extends about 600m from Caloundra Surf Lifesaving Club on Kings Beach around the headland to the Shelly Beach access road. Along the walkway there are many sites dedicated to the memory of units that contributed to the defence of Australia. These include the memorial to Australian hospital ship Centaur, which was sunk by a Japanese submarine on Ma May 14, 1943 with the loss of 268 lives. The Caloundra headland memorial walkway is a relatively easy walk, eeven for those with mobility issues. The walkway not only showcases C Caloundra’s picturesque coastline b but also provides a range of suitable p places to pause and reflect on the ssacrifice and commitment of those w who served their nation.

Busy year at Maleny’s Maple Street co-op MAPLE Street Co-op had much to celebrate at its recent 42nd AGM with local producers in the spotlight. Each grower, farmer or maker presented a two-minute “lightening talk” and then caught up with members over drinks and local tasting platters. The producer guest list included Hop Valley Brewing from Noosa, Tin Shed Farm eggs, Tribe of Quin’s microgreens, Medicine Room, Skye Chai, Robin Clayfield permaculture, both Jeremiah’s Sourdough and Crystal Waters Woodfired Bakery, Hinterland Bees and Four Cow Farm. Also in the audience were some of the co-op’s local consignors who sell excess produce from their gardens. Membership has grown to more than 1,100, with each person owning a share and having a say in how the shop is
run. Since extending the co-op into the old ice-creamery building and almost doubling its floor space, sales have been at an all-time high, buoyed by increased community interest in local food, organics, sustainable homewares and organic body care. The co-operative model means that all surplus is ploughed back into the shop. This has seen improvements to its bank of solar panels that provides 30-50% of its power, an EV (electric vehicle) charging station and more efficient equipment. Business manager Peter Pamment said the co-op aimed to be a local leader in innovation. “Maleny has always led the way and now is being recognised as an EV town,” Peter said.

Happy birthday Maleny Commerce CURRENT and past members of Maleny Commerce came together at Hotel Maleny recently to celebrate the organisation’s 35th birthday. President Kay Ridge, from Dash Social, took the opportunity to highlight the chamber’s achievements including the success of the Maleny Gift Card, a recent initiative of immediate past president Nicole Hilton. To date, more than $102,000 has been spent with these cards, which is money that remains in Maleny. One initiative Kay has been working on during her 12 months as president is establishing a Maleny Commerce member’s card. Initially the card would allow active members to receive a fuel discount at Liberty Fuels (currently 4 cents per litre). The chamber is looking for other businesses interested in supporting the program. Chamber committee members are looking forward to the Maleny Late Night Christmas event to be held in Maple Street on Friday, December 10 from 5-8pm. Although the street will not close for the event there will be activities happening in the Maleny Community Centre and in businesses up and down the street from Santa photos at Easton Lawyers to kids’ activities down at the Riverside Centre. As the activities are predominately under cover, the event will go ahead whatever the weather. This year the chamber received a grant from Sunshine Coast Council to support the hosting of a Sustainable Futures Expo in 2022, which will bring about 1,000 people to Maleny.

Scammers beware – there’s a CROC about to bite back AUSTRALIA is one of the top five countries in the world targeted by cybercriminals and, according to the federal government’s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), a staggering $33 billion was lost to cybercrime last financial year (ACSC annual cyber threat report, - July 2020-June 2021). Caloundra-based national not-forprofit online identity and cyber scam service IDCARE is fighting back and has launched an outreach clinic to support people in the regions and raise awareness about protection from scammers. Managing director and founder of IDCARE Dr David Lacey recently gave federal Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews and local Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace a tour of the mobile cyber support units which will deliver a regions-focused initiative called Cyber Resilience Outreach Clinics (CROC). CROC vehicles will travel through regional and outback communities to alert vulnerable communities to the risks posed by online crime. The clinics raise awareness of common types of scams, how to recognise warning signs, and useful tips and techniques to stay cyber safe. The travelling roadshow also provides
a safe forum for people who have been victims of scammers to tell their stories and receive support. It is partly funded by a $6 million grant through the federal government’s Cyber Security Strategy and in partnership with Westpac, Meta (formerly Facebook) and NBN Co. Dr Lacey said scammers had taken advantage of the opportunities the COVID crisis had presented. “Demand for IDCARE’s services has increased by 43% in 2021,” Dr Lacey said. “IDCARE has found Australians living in regional and remote communities experience nearly 40% more losses on average per (scam) event than their city counterparts.” Mr Wallace said that the project would make a difference for ordinary Australians across the regions. “For years, IDCARE has been leading the way nationwide, helping hundreds of thousands of Australians all over the country to respond to the devastating effects of cybercrime,” he said. “Now it is fantastic to see them taking that leadership on the road, reaching out to the regions and spreading the word in our most vulnerable communities.”

Andrew Wallace and IDCARE’s Dr David Lacey (centre) with Minister Karen Andrews at the launch of CROC He said it would take the cyber-safety message to people in areas where scammers had caused financial and emotional harm. Minister Andrews said support for victims of cybercrime was vital. “I encourage all Australians to increase their awareness of cyber security threats
and take action to secure themselves and their online data,” she said. “Scams and cybercrime can affect any one of us anywhere as, unfortunately, too many people who live in rural and regional areas know too well.” To find out more about IDCARE and its CROC initiative, go to www.idcare.org

Changes to Peachester-Beerwah Flexilink service FOLLOWING community feedback, travellers who use the PeachesterBeerwah Flexilink transport service will have a new timetable from December 1. Flexilink services provide affordable, reliable and accessible public transport to people with few transport options. Costing only $2 ($1 child/concession), the pre-booked service runs three return trips a day Monday-Saturday and provides connections to TransLink train and railbus services at Beerwah station. The community feedback has resulted in a change to the morning service, which will start later. The Beerwah to Peachester service will now depart at 7.40am, 11.50am and 5.30pm MondayFriday and 8.30am, 11.50am and 5.30pm on Saturday and public holidays. The Peachester to Beerwah service will now depart at 8am, 12.10pm and 5.50pm Monday to Friday and 8.50am, 12.10pm and 5.50pm on Saturday and public holidays. Transport portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski said the changes would help to improve the viability of the service. “We undertook a survey in June to gain feedback from the community and we’ve identified a few timetable changes, particularly the timing of
the first morning service, which will hopefully see increased passenger numbers,” Cr Baberowski said. “Unfortunately, this service is currently under supported and we hope these changes will see increased participation to ensure its viability into the future. “It has to be said that if residents want the service to continue then passenger numbers need to increase or it may not make sense for it to continue.” The new timetable begins from Wednesday, December 1, with patronage numbers to be reassessed in six months before a decision is made about the future of the service. Flexilink services are funded by Sunshine Coast Council’s transport levy on a trial basis to determine the demand for bus services in areas with limited public transport. To book a Flexilink service phone 1300 511 163. Bookings must be made at least two hours ahead of departure or by 9pm the previous evening for the first morning service. More information about the Peachester-Beerwah Flexilink service, including the new timetable, is available at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search Flexilink transport.
Police service recognised ONE of the Queensland Police Service’s traditions is honouring officers and support staff for the contribution they make to both the service and community. Bravery, tenacity and professional conduct are qualities reflected in many of the decisions and actions taken every day by police officers. The Sunshine Coast district honours and awards ceremony was held recently to highlight the work performed by police officers, including a number from Beerwah Police station.

On the lookout for Leos THE Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range is looking for local students aged 12-17 years to be part of its active, highly motivated Leos Club. The Leo Club encourages young people to develop leadership qualities by participating in social service activities. Members meet via Zoom once a month and keep in touch via WhatsApp, getting together in person for fundraising or service events. The club runs successful trivia nights and barbeques, and has several service projects in the planning stage that would benefit from new and more members. The main beneficiary to date has been Chappy Becky Francis, with the club providing toiletry bags for distribution
and $500 for educational toys for people to use in her primary school mentoring groups. Recycling of ring pulls from cans has provided funds for the Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, with 9kg donated to date, and collection of plastic bottle tops continues for recycling by the Ocean Crusaders into crab pot buoys. Both ring pulls and bottle tops can be removed and saved when recycling containers without jeopardising the 10 cent refund. The club is currently planning recycling of sneakers, activities to donate to children of DV Connect clients and the Lions Fly a Kite for Sight project. More industrial development options for Beerwah SMALL business opportunities in Beerwah may be expanded if a development is approved on the eastern outskirts. A development application was lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to subdivide the 13ha of strawberry fields and the associated house and buildings at the corner of Roys Road and Burys Road (42 Roys Road) into 39 industrial blocks. The zoning is for medium impact industry usage, the same as all land in that area including the estates in Moroney Place and Biondi Crescent, as well as the disputed Coles proposal site, which this development directly joins. The land belongs to the estate of the late Dudley Crumpton and contains a considerable environmental management and conservation area, which is a recognised mapped koala habitat on the southern portion of the site along Coochin Creek. This area is to be protected, except for a 500m2 area earmarked for clearing to allow internal road construction. The road access in and out of the site will be via Burys Road, with all traffic then channelled onto Roys Road. If approved and developed as an industrial park, the resulting increase in truck and vehicle traffic will add to the already constrained Roys Road/Steve Irwin Way intersection. A statement in the submitted planning report goes against what Coles argued in its proposal to rezone industrial land to allow a shopping centre development. Coles argued that there were sufficient industrial lands available on the coast, which the council refuted

when it refused the development application. However, this report states that there “is very little available industrial land within the Sunshine Coast and the ability to provide a variety of lot sizes to supply the current market is logical”. The Coles development refusal is in the early stages of an appeal to the Planning and Environment Court, with the next hearing set down for February. NEW ALFRESCO DINING AREA
THE new 63-lot residential subdivision between Bunya and Tallowwood streets in Maleny has been given a name, which some may find a little bizarre. The Enclave Maleny is what the development company RM Developments has decided to go with. Although some from outside the area may say that the definition of enclave – a part of a country or a group of people who are different from the people living in the surrounding area – could be seen as an apt descriptor of the uniquely different Maleny mindset, the estate name is a definite transgression from the norm. Usually, the preferred marketing label relates to the environment. Nice words such as meadow, green, haven, cloud or forest. Maybe this new part of Maleny will attract some ‘different’ people who like the idea that they can truthfully say that they live in a special enclave in Maleny. The first stage of the land release features 19 lots ranging from 800m2 to 1,506m2, with prices starting from $499,000 for land only. The remaining 44 lots will be released in future stages. Of the lots already being marketed, most are priced in the mid-$500,000 range. Add to that the cost of a new house build, landscaping and fit-out and you’re looking around the million-dollar mark. If you’d like to read about what the development offers in the way of a Maleny lifestyle, check out website www.theenclavemaleny.com.au

Caloundra to welcome back cinema By Jack Waters MOVIE lovers across the region will be welcomed back to an old-fashioned cinema experience in a fresh modern package, with the Strand Cinema in Caloundra set to reopen this Wednesday, November 24. New owner Luke Warburton has been obsessed with everything movie and cinema for as long as he can remember, with this project in Caloundra his latest escapade. A lot has changed at the cinema since its doors were shut in July, with new screens, sound systems and projectors set to provide a more immersive experience. However, Luke said there was something else families will love even more. “Tickets will be $10 across the board, with popcorn from $4 and a small drink from $3.50,” he said. “We don’t want people to feel like they have to take out a home loan to afford to take their kids to the cinema.” Luke also owns the cinema at Bribie Island, which has strong community support, and hopes to see the same positive reaction from the community in Caloundra. “What we’ve seen at Bribie is by spending dollars and reinvesting that into the business movie goers seem to want to come more, so that’s what we’re doing in Caloundra,” he said. “We’ve had all the air conditioning units flushed out so there’s a fresh new smell, we have new screens in each cinema, added a few coats of paint and a new ticketing system.

Art is child’s play
LANDSBOROUGH Community Kindergarten is celebrating 60 years with a fine art exhibition titled ‘Kindy through their eyes’. The exhibition will feature work created by the kindy’s talented young local artists working with the dedicated teaching staff and special visitors from the local community. Children’s art is a powerful reminder to stop and appreciate the small things in the world. The artwork includes photography, clay, framed flower art and textiles. The children’s work will be for sale on the evening to raise funds for future art experiences. Local photographer Casey Mcintyre. of Studio Photography, visited the kindy over the past few weeks to work alongside the children in producing their photographs. The children spent time with Casey in their favourite

kindy places to talk about the details of their work and look at texture, perspective and colours. Casey said the children knew exactly how to use a digital camera. She said it was a wonderful experience for both her and the young photographers. One of the devoted kindy mums has shared her love of clay with the children and assisted them in making pinched pots, which were fired and glazed. The kindy students also enjoyed the opportunity to learn from Gayle Farlow from Farlows’ Floriculture, who shared her knowledge of flowers and gardens. The exhibition will also feature work created by the children during day-to-day activities with the kindy staff. The exhibition will be on Saturday, December 4 from 4–7pm at the kindy at 13 Maleny Street Landsborough. Attendance is free but you will need a ticket to enter. DID YOU KNOW THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS IN LIFE & BUSINESS IS PERSONAL GROWTH & SELF DEVELOPMENT
THIS year’s dux at Glasshouse Christian College is Natalie Beakey whose achievements include coming first in every subject. Natalie loves research, data and anything to do with maths and is planning a career in business and data science. Natalie said she had always been good at maths and planned to use it to her advantage. Her first preference for university is a double degree in business and science at the University of Queensland and she is moving to Brisbane in readiness for her tertiary education. “I’m still finding out what I enjoy and part of the excitement of university is exploring different pathways,” Natalie said. She said she had valued the support and encouragement from her teachers at Glasshouse Christian College, particularly how they had impacted her journey to where she is today.

DID you know women aged over 50 are the fastest growing group of homeless people in Australia? Data from the 2016 Census showed the Sunshine Coast has the highest rate of women over 55 in housing stress. Glass Housing 55 recently held a community information session with Better Together Housing, which was hosted by women for women experiencing housing insecurity. The aim was to support women aged over 55 to find shared housing for more affordable living in a safe and secure way. Participants of the Better Together Housing program can be women who own or rent their home but are interested in finding a woman to share

Nappies for disadvantaged families
LANDSBOROUGH Seventh-day Adventist Church members recently donated a large quantity of nappies to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre to help disadvantaged and homeless families

Remembrance Day tribute The Glasshouse Views (GHV) retirement village might be small, with 24 villas in total, but the residents enjoy access to a full array of monthly activities, organised by the village activities team. From a simple idea of making commemorative poppies, the Have-AChat craft group embarked on a project that evolved into a group commitment to create an impressive display.

The cross was made in the GHV Village Men’s Shed by Colin Brighton, then covered in white fabric with a fabric fall, by Marie Mason. Jenny Emerson led the charge to provide the number of poppies to complete the project. Zonta’s super garden street stall ZONTA Club of Blackall Range members have been working for months propagating and growing plants for you to buy in time for summer planting or Christmas gifts at their stall to be held on Wednesday, December 1 at the Kiosk in Maple Street Maleny from 8.30am. Coordinators Linda McElrea and Lyndel Grant are garden lovers with green thumbs. They are pleased with their hard work (and the friends they have coerced into helping) and urge patrons to be early to get the best choice of plants, with prices starting at $5. “Of course, it is a fundraising effort for the work Zonta does in the community and around the world but the plants we have will be good value and there will be a great variety,” Linda said. “We know how much people across the range love their gardens, so we expect plants will go quickly. “We have succulents, day lilies, hydrangeas, geraniums and many other flowering plants. “A special feature will be hanging baskets already planted, so the hard work is done. All you have to do is enjoy them,” she said. As well as the plants there will be a range of delightful hand-painted pots, so think Christmas, lots of

Warm Earth Exhibition
MALENY Arts and Crafts Group (MACG) clay workers presented their Warm Earth Exhibition over two weekends this month, taking the opportunity to show off their best and most sophisticated work. The exhibition was timed to be part of the Australian Ceramic Association Open Studio weekend, with the work of 18 of the group’s members incorporating a variety of styles and techniques that the artists have developed. Across the country 180 ceramic studios opened their doors to the public, including seven on the Sunshine Coast. The group displayed a wide range of artistic and functional works reflecting the textures, colours and unique environment of the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The pieces are the work of a diverse group of people with distinct styles and approaches, and involve a range of firing techniques as well as varied d finishes, surface decoration and glazes. There is inspiring hand building and creative wheel work. Former MAGG president Ken Munzie opened the exhibition, acknowledging the group’s journey from m humble beginning in 1977 to the wonderful shared creative workshop space at the Maleny Showground. Ken said that groups such as MACG were keeping the old craft making practices alive, which was important. “It is the responsibility of us older artisans to make sure that groups such as MACG continue to flourish and attract younger members so we can pass on these skills,” he said.

Elvis was in the hall
DRIVING past Peachester Hall on Saturday night, November 6, you may have thought you’d stepped back to the 1950s as the street was lined with classic cars. Peachester State School, in conjunction with renowned impersonator and Peachester local Markk Andrew Tabone, held a Grease night to raise money for the school P&C. Guests dressed in their ’50s finest and danced the night away as Mark performed as Elvis, Buddy Holly and, of course, revived everyone’s favourite Grease songs as Danny Zuko. It was a fantastic night of rock ’n’ roll and it was great to see so many locals supporting the school. The Peachester School P&C would like to thank everyone for a great night.

Christmas storytelling will be happening throughout the night on the vacant grass next to Peace of Green, where you can sit on the rugs and scatter pillows available and enjoy the dressed-up storytellers. Up the street at the Easton Lawyers garden Santa and Mrs Claus will be available from 5-7pm for your chance to take photos with Santa. Paulette said the retail businesses were excited and some had wonderful in-store and front door activities planned for the night. “We’ve heard some of their great ideas including an old-fashioned tombola, movies showing on walls, staff dressing up, in-house promotions, such as buy something in-store and go into the draw to win a prize,” Paulette said. “It’s been such a pleasure to visit our businesses and encourage them to stay open. Everyone has been so excited about the event and the festive vibe.” Thanks to the generosity of the Queensland Country Bank, one lucky raffle winner will take home a fabulous prize of a $500 Maleny gift card. Like and follow the event’s Facebook page to keep up to date www.facebook.com/ malenylatenightchristmas As there will be plenty of foot traffic in Maple Street on the night, anyone who needs to drive through the town should consider going around the town via Coral Street.

MALENY Chamber of Commerce is getting excited about its upcoming event – Maleny Late Night Christmas to be held on Friday, December 10 from 5-8pm along Maple Street. Maleny Commerce committee member Paulette Steele said the event was going to be great for the entire family. “This year the street will not be closed. Rather we are having a late-night shopping, eating and entertainment event activating the entire street,” Paulette said. “We want to support our small businesses and bring a festival atmosphere to an evening event. And who doesn’t like late night shopping? “We also have Maleny Handmade Markets running a Christmas market for us in the community centre. “Most of our cafés will be open so you can sit and enjoy the music and Christmas atmosphere, or grab something and walk around and explore. “We start the night off with the Sunshine Statesmen Quartet singing Christmas carols from the Community Centre deck from 5.15-6pm,” she said. Music will be playing at both ends of the street with a band playing in Maleny Lane, where the usual eclectic food mix will be available. The Riverside Centre will host a petting zoo for the kids and a jumping castle.

A word from John McGrath – Border closure no barrier for QLD buyers Despite its major price growth, Queensland continues to offer exceptional value to buyers, according to John McGrath founder and executive director of McGrath Estate Agents. Brisbane was Australia’s fastest growing market in October, with house prices climbing 2.8% to a median of just above $730,000. In 2021 alone, Brisbane house prices have leapt 22.5%. That’s not far off the pace set by the best performing city, Sydney, at 27.8%.
The regional Queensland market, which includes the more expensive markets of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, also continues to rise. House prices went up by 1.9% in October (the second fastest regional monthly growth rate) and there’s been a 19.8% increase over the 10 months of 2021 so far. That’s pretty impressive growth for a state that’s had some of Australia’s tightest border restrictions over the past two years. It seems that’s been no barrier to buyers, with thousands of Sydney and Melbourne families relocating to the Sunshine State because they can now work from home. Queensland has long been a favourite holiday destination and also offers the best beachside lifestyle in the country. Before the pandemic, many southerners dreamed of living in Queensland

Recently, our incredible New Client Consultant Amy Bennett, along with her husband Daniel hosted a “Pinknic” event on their front lawn which raised over $7,500 for NBCF who are Australia’s leading national body funding gamechanging breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public. Over 200 people attended, 1518

As soon as she could, she started colouring her hair pink. When she met her husband, Daniel, he knew that pink would always form a part of their lives.
For the past 10 years, Amy has been asked if she colours her hair pink to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and now she can say yes as Daniel has painted their house in Kawana Forest pink! To make a donation or to find out more, contact Amy Bennett on 0488 771 626

YOU Time for a name change?
OVER the last 50 or so years I have enjoyed reading a newspaper. However, the way advertising has taken over the daily paper here in Queensland has me wondering if the time has come for another name change. With the assistance of Wikipedia I have learnt that throughout its history The Courier-Mail has been through four mastheads, including The Moreton Bay Courier then it later became The Courier then The Brisbane Courier and since 1933 has been The Courier-Mail. Perhaps a more appropriate masthead would be Courier-Mail Advertiser, or maybe The Harvey Norman or The Good Guys Courier-Mail. I am so sick of going through the paper daily to remove all the advertising inserts. If they were still cutting down trees to produce paper instead of recycling newsprint I would have long since given up reading the paper and just rely on computer-generated news. I do understand that advertising is necessary to bring products to the reader’s attention but, frankly, my take on this blanket coverage is not only annoying but makes me feel that the advertising money could well be put towards a better pricing outcome. I do enjoy the content of GC&M News’s issues including the advertising content, which is mostly of an informative and constructive nature. James Aitken Landsborough
Elder abuse
As a GP, I’ve heard many stories about elderly people suffering financial abuse by family members or those they have trusted with power of attorney over their affairs. Carers may feel entitled to use some of the elderly person’s money in return for the care and support they provide. Children may believe they should not have to wait until a parent dies to receive their inheritance.
Or they may talk a parent into funding their house purchase, leaving the parent insufficient funds to live well. So, I am pleased that the Speak Up Now Stop Domestic and Family Violence group in Maleny is running a second elder abuse forum to provide seniors with the tools to prevent such abuse. The group is a collaboration of service clubs in Maleny – Rotary, Zonta, Quota and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The previous forum resulted in many requests to make it available again to a wide audience. The forum will be held at the Maleny RSL on Monday, December 13, from 9am-12 noon. It is a free event and includes a morning tea prepared by the CWA and Lions Club. A panel of expert presenters from the Suncoast Community Legal Service, Easton Lawyers, Centacare and Relationships Australia will address common problems with wills and powers of attorney and answer any questions. Vinnie’s Maleny Christmas appeal DUE to ongoing COVID-19 uncertainty, St Vincent de Paul Society volunteers will distribute local store cards only (not Christmas hampers as in previous years) to needy families in Maleny and surrounding areas this year. In the past hampers were generously donated by Maleny

Hampers sparking joy this Christmas AS Christmas rolls around yet again, the Landsborough Area Community Association (LACA) is encouraging residents to donate items for its annual Christmas hampers. For the past few years, the group, which operates at the Morris House Neighbourhood Centre, has been putting together Christmas hampers for those doing it tough. LACA secretary Ann Husband said the hampers went a long way in making this time of year a little more joyful for those who might be struggling. “Everyone who receives these hampers are incredibly grateful and
quite overwhelmed. They usually say that they didn’t expect to receive things this nice,” Ann said. Although regular food items such as tinned spaghetti and pasta are welcome, this year the group would love to see more Christmas-themed items donated such as shortbread biscuits and puddings. Anyone who would like to donate can drop items off at the Morris House Neighbourhood Centre at 478 Old Landsborough Road by Friday, December 10. Hampers will be available to be picked up from December 13-16.
Noise pollution?
I WAS surprised recently when, instead of being approached personally by a neighbour who incorrectly believed I was breaking the noise pollution regulated devices local law, I found an anonymous nasty note in my letterbox. Sunshine Coast Council’s rules relating to the use of power tools in a house are that it is allowable between 7am–7pm from Monday–Saturday and from 8am–7pm on Sunday. Having a really young one in my household has meant that we are always conscious of keeping the noise down and I have always abided by those times. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

The levy, charged to every rateable property in the region, is used to document, research, conserve, protect, promote and provide access to tangible and intangible items, places, facilities and events that define the stories, history and values of the people, communities and culture of the Sunshine Coast.

ELECTED LNP leader visits Glass House
I WAS very pleased to host LNP leader David Crisafulli in and around the electorate on November 3. We started in the morning at the Morayfield Health Hub. We met with Dr Evan Jones, the director of the Health Hub, for a tour and a discussion. The residents around Caboolture have been raving about how good the Hub’s urgent care has been and it takes the pressure off Caboolture Hospital. The closure of the Hub because the state government has withdrawn funding will see a catastrophic increase in patients presenting to Caboolture Hospital, a hospital that isn’t currently coping with the demand.

with Andrew Powell State Member for Glass House
On a more positive note, it always pays to showcase one of our region’s culinary delights when you have the leader in your patch. So huge thanks to Craig and the team at the Terrace Seafood Restaurant in Maleny for hosting a small gathering of business and community representatives. We then visited several Glass House agribusinesses, continuing to give David Crisafulli a “taste” of Glass House. We were hosted by and sampled Ginger MacPherson’s Vanilla Vine Sunshine Coast cold-pressed coffee with vanilla syrup. We also checked out Hive Haven honey and Yanalla Farms custard apples. Huge thanks to Jenny Broderick from Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce and Roger Reilly from Celebrate Glasshouse Country, Judy Tomlinson from Glasshouse Country Tours and the irrepressible Sunshine Coast Foodie Martin Duncan! Together, you helped make David’s visit a huge success.
I’M excited to announce that from December 1 the new Peachester to Beerwah Flexilink schedule starts. The Peachester to Beerwah Flexilink trial service operates a return service three times a day Monday-Saturday. The service starts at Simpson Street Beerwah, travels along Peachester Road to Fortune Avenue/Storrs Road Peachester, and back again. Trips cost just $2 or less. To book, call 1300 511 163 two hours ahead of departure or by 9pm the previous night for the first morning services.
Bankfoot House
Speaking of getting around the area, did you catch Bankfoot House on the Queensland Weekender recently? If you missed it, it’s well worth a watch www.7weekender.com/sunshine-coastheritage-treasure Hopefully this promotion will bring more visitors to the Glass House Mountains and through the historic precinct. And if you haven’t been Bankfoot House yourself, December is certainly the month to visit. The Christmas program is going to be special with a live theatre production of Miracle on 34th Street on December 3 and a Christmas Scone Time on December 9. Both events are a great way to experience Bankfoot at its best and you can find both on our heritage website https://heritage.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

New program for blokes with prostate cancer Avoid mosquito bites this summer A NATIONWIDE program has been launched for men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, which aims to reduce the higher risks of suicide related to the disease. About 18,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year will be able to access the free program provided by Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). Known as MatesCONNECT, the program will connect, via phone, newly diagnosed men with trained volunteers who have been through the disease to provide more accessible support services. PCFA CEO Professor Jeff Dunn said for many men a diagnosis of prostate cancer could be isolating. “Having another man to talk to who understands how it feels can help to reduce feelings of fear and uncertainty, giving men greater ability to cope with their treatment and manage the side effects,” Professor Dunn said. “MatesCONNECT will give men the type of support that can only be provided by those who understand what living with a diagnosis of prostate cancer is like. “Those who understand what it’s like to live through a diagnosis are well placed to offer emotional and informational support to other men. “Men can get practical advice on surgery and treatment, and the side effects of treatment such as incontinence, erectile dysfunction and coping with hormone therapy.”
Girl power
CALLING all parents with daughters. Discover tips and strategies to empower young pre-teen females at Beerwah Library on December 4 from 10-11.30am. Join girl empowerment coach Alejandra Chavez in a session designed to support parents of 8-12-year-old daughters with no-fuss resources and simple solutions to help raise mighty girls the mighty girl way.
“Symptoms may include fever, swollen and painful joints, and rash, which can be managed to ease discomfort. “While most people recover in a few weeks, some people experience joint pain and fatigue for months after infection,” Professor McNeil said. Ross River virus can be found in more than 40 different species of mosquitos across Australia. The virus is spread from infected mosquitoes to humans. However, it’s not directly contagious and doesn’t spread from person to person. Mosquitoes get the virus from biting an infected animal. It is then spread to humans when they get bitten by an infected mosquito. Professor McNeil said Ross River virus rates had fluctuated over the past two years, while malaria and dengue rates declined, in part due to public health measures introduced during the pandemic. “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a varied impact on mosquito-borne disease epidemiology in Queensland but the need for personal protective measures together with mosquito surveillance and control remains unchanged,” Professor McNeil said. “Cases of Ross River virus increased in 2020. Rates rose to the highest levels in five years last year, with the majority of cases occurring in South East Queensland,” he said.
Find out about the mindset shifts and beliefs to avoid the tween confidence slump, and learn about girl empowerment, personal growth, red flags and the top issues affecting tweens. The workshop is free to attend but bookings are essential via the libraries’ website https://library.sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au/Whats-On/Girl-Power or phone 5475 8989.

Professor Dunn said about one in five men with prostate cancer experienced long-term anxiety and depression. “Of great concern, men with prostate cancer also face a 70 per cent increased risk of suicide death compared to the general population,” he said. PCFA currently has 12 MatesCONNECT volunteers around the country, who have each had different treatment and side-effect experiences. They will be matched with newly diagnosed men, based on their treatment pathways and any side effects, via phone. “MatesCONNECT enables men who live regionally, or who are reluctant to speak face-to-face – or prefer to remain anonymous – to seek the support they need,” Professor Dunn said. “Our volunteers are just a phone call away to provide patients with an understanding of what to expect and give practical and supportive insight into living with prostate cancer. “This program will be a game-changer for men affected by prostate cancer. Importantly, the program responds to the evidence that men who have a lived experience of prostate cancer can be a source of great strength and support for those newly impacted by the disease.” If you need support, or would like to connect with a volunteer, phone 1800 220 099 or visit www.pcfa.org.au
AS we head into summer and towards peak Ross River virus season, Queenslanders are reminded to protect themselves against mosquito bites as much as possible. Queensland Health’s acting deputy director-general and chief medical officer Professor Keith McNeil said Ross River virus infections accounted for the largest number of human mosquito-borne disease notifications in Queensland. “If you’re enjoying the great outdoors this summer to play sport, go for bushwalks, catch up on gardening or even hosting a backyard barbecue, you need to be aware of mosquitoes,” Professor McNeil said. “Biting can be experienced at any time of day but some species are most active at dusk and dawn. “Measures to prevent mosquito bites include regularly applying insect repellent, wearing loose light-coloured clothing to cover up arms, legs and feet, and using other insecticidebased mosquito control devices where possible. “Around your home, you should empty containers holding water at least weekly and ensure flyscreens are in good order so mosquitoes can’t enter your home easily. “There’s no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment available for Ross River virus, so it’s important you take steps to avoid infection as much as possible.

SCENTED daphne (Phaleria clerodendron) is a native tropical Queensland rainforest small tree. The unusual flowering habit (called cauliflory) gives a spectacular, if shortlived, display but it’s the heady scent that is the winner. Reminiscent of a piña colada (coconut, banana and vanilla) the aroma on a still morning is just divine. If you’ve got a sheltered spot with good soil and dappled shade, you too can grow a scented daphne. To buy and plant one, just talk with the good people at Forest Heart Nursery in Coral Street Maleny.

Jobs for the yard in December
• THE long spells of dry winter weather can make your soils water repellent. Now’s a good time to use soil wetting granules to make the most of any storm rainfall. • If you haven’t done it yet, prune azaleas to keep them nice and compact, and give them a feed with azalea fertiliser. Spray them with Confidor to protect the leaves from the dreaded azalea lacewing. • The wet humid weather is heaven for vegetable caterpillars and grasshoppers. They can strip leafy green veggies overnight. Hand remove or spray with a natural spray (such as Dipel or Success) every couple of days. Remember that water washes the spray off, so repeat after rain or overhead irrigation. • Tunnelling ants are active and can cause headaches in pot plants. Drown them by watering with soapy water, maybe with a few drops of a
42
pyrethrum insecticide. • Paw paw trees that have grown too tall can be cut back now. Cut the stem to 1m off the ground and cover the cut top with a large can. • Prune back grevilleas by a third and feed them with a low phosphorus fertiliser. This simulates being burnt back in a bushfire and stimulates them to grow more branches. More branches mean more flowers. • Don’t forget to slip-slop-slap when you go out in the garden, even if it is for a short period. Try to do most of the work in the early mornings or late afternoons, so that you miss the heat of the day. Take a water bottle with you too – keeping well hydrated is just as important. • Tidy up the garden for Santa. He doesn’t think too highly of a messy garden. • Passionfruit can be fertilised now using a citrus and fruit tree fertiliser.
IN THE • If you’re growing melons, as they set fruit, the water supply should be reduced considerably as overwatering at this stage will encourage the formation of tasteless fruit. • Hygiene is terribly important in the control of black spot on roses. On a regular basis gather up any diseased leaves that have fallen on the ground and dispose of them carefully. Don’t put them in the compost heap. • Watch for aphids on soft shoots of citrus and roses, check for beneficial insects such as hoverflies and ladybeetle larvae before controlling them. If some of the aphids look like little brown balloons, they have been parasitised by a micro-wasp. Spray Natrasoap as a least toxic control in the absence of predators. • Bananas need regular removal of suckers to produce healthy plants. Each clump of bananas should be made up of a mature plant, a halfgrown plant and one sucker only. Preference in sucker selection should be given to those on the side of the plant where you wish the clump to move in. • Make your backyard mossie unfriendly. Don’t leave water lying around in pet bowls or pot saucers too long.

Blacky is a very sweet natured and affectionate boy who enjoys spending most of his time inside snoozing the day away, but also likes a couple of hours in the garden soaking up the sun. He would do best in a home that has a cat enclosure to keep him safe. He doesn’t mind sharing his space with another cat as long as they aren’t bossy.

Apollo is very much a puppy who is yet to learn his basic obedience and needs further proper doggie socialisation. With time, training, exercise and lots of love from you, this is something Apollo will grow out of. He is a really sweet dog who loves to play fetch with a ball, he hasn’t quite mastered the ‘drop’ part of the ball return though. This guy does tend to jump around a bit, so is best with teenagers who he can’t bowl over with his playful antics. Apollo recently had eye surgery, and is still recovering, however he will need secure 6ft fencing to keep him safely at home and one that is free from cats.

Contributed by Miles Allen Our biggest event during the last two weeks was the annual Plum Pudding Day with bowlers from all over the Sunshine Coast competing for the honours. We had 64 bowlers, the maximum that can play at one time, with Pelican Waters winning with a margin of 31. The club was decorated for Christmas, we had plum puddings galore and a delicious healthy homemade lunch with trifle for dessert. The Member for Glass House and our patron Andrew Powell came and presented the winners with their prizes. Rob Outridge from the IGA presented Woombye with their runners up prize and Tony Weldon, manager of Hotel Maleny presented our four lucky draws. Big thanks to our guests and all the volunteers who helped on the day. In our Twilight Bowls competition, we recently held two games on the same night. Out of 14 teams only three managed to win twice - congratulations to the Golfers, RPT and the Wot Notts. At the top of the table sit the Mighty 10s who were easily beaten in their first
sport game by the Oblimeys, but they beat the Amigos in their second game with a golden point delivered by Ben Fawns. There are seven teams hovering around the top of the table with only six points separating them, and with five games left, it looks like being a close finish. At Scroungers on Friday, 17 players competed for chocolates and prizes. There was a slight variation to the rules with short bowls being penalised and this caught out a few of us. Short bowls are rarely useful and do not add to the score, so far better to have your bowls level with the jack or behind. Winners were John Williams, Dave Robson, Jim King and Pam Nott. Chocolates were awarded to Dave Robson and Jim King for frequently touching the jack. And visitors Rosemary and Kevin Gillman showed that you don’t have to be experienced bowlers to win chocolates. In conclusion, we’ve had a busy two weeks and there’s plenty more bowls to deliver before the festive season arrives.

The Range Croquet Club
By Ken Barker THE club hosted its annual November tournament Thursday-Sunday, November 4-7, with players coming from far and wide to play in divisions 1-4 in a great competition. Division 1, played on the Thursday, was won by Donna Manning. Donna won all three of her games, the most exciting being the last against Kathie Grant from Southport who was the runner-up. The attached photo shows Donna being presented with the shield by club president Sarah Widin. Division 2 on the Friday was a closely fought competition with many players from the region and further afield. Nick Cram had a good game and came within a whisker of pegging out. Bill Habner from Nambour, the eventual runner-up, had an excellent game where he went one better and pegged out against Murray Tinker from Caloundra. Unfortunately, Bill couldn’t reproduce this form in the final against Wade Hart from Eildon. Wade played well to contain him, winning the game by a large margin, and the event. Division 3, played on the Saturday, was won by Lesley Johnstone from Headland Buderim narrowly ahead of her clubmate and 2020 winner of this event Diane Horsham. Their game was tied after extra time, which meant the game was won by the first player to score a hoop … nail biting stuff!
Division 4, played on the Sunday, was a close tussle between Roy Pemberton from Bundaberg and Lynette Evans. Both players won two games but Lynette took first on a countback. Congratulations to all players on the good sportsmanship displayed through the tournament. All officials, referees and scorers were impressed with their attitude to the game. Many thanks to all club members, referees, officials and helpers – especially the person who brought the delicious watermelon. We would also like to thank our major sponsor Munro Thompson Lawyers for their generous support. On Saturday, November 13 at our annual general meeting the 2021 office bearers were returned. Congratulations and thanks to these people for the fine effort they put into the administration of the club. Ted Singleton congratulated us on our pennants for the year. Andrew Powell and Ted remain as club patrons. Play resumed on Sunday, November 14 with Vince Carbery playing Donna and Helen Andrews losing 6–7. Lynette Evans played Stuart Craig winning 5-3. Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm. Contact Sarah for other days. Coaching is available on Saturday mornings at 8am. Best overall score Jenny Smith. NTP’s: 5 and 18 - Sonia Kenway, 16 - Robyn Ryan. BRD went to 11 points. Saturday, November 13 was a stableford with only 18 ladies. Winner on 41 points was Sophie Johnston from Jenny Rutley on 37 points. NTPs: 2 and 5 - Karen Gannon, 16 Karen Kemp and 2nd shot 18 - Wendy Bradley. BRD went to 33 points. SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 – NOVEMBER 22
Sagittarians love their freedom. When the going gets really tough there’s a tendency to abandon relationships, thinking you don’t need that person anymore. This week the planets stir up confusion, so think carefully before doing anything drastic. If you don’t, the heart you break now could turn out to be your own.
This week calls for compromise. Major pitfalls to watch out for are restlessness or family conflict. Also take care with finances. Leave nothing to chance and, if necessary, seek trusted advice. If all this sounds stressful, it doesn’t have to be. You can’t control others’ grumpier moments, but you can control your own.
Aquarian compassion is called upon this week. You may encounter resistance because others feel embarrassed by their current situation. Thankfully, you help lift their hopes by reminding them that life can be enjoyed, despite their current circumstances. No surprise, too, if loved ones benefit from your financial generosity.
This week brings a welcome turning point. As there’s no telling where unexpected offers may lead, why not take a few calculated risks? Financial problems should also start to ease, so, at last, niggling debts can start to be cleared. You’re welcome to disagree but this all sounds like the makings of a much easier time.
ARIES MARCH 21 – APRIL 20
Someone isn’t being entirely straight with you at the moment. What’s questionable is whether they’re being deliberately misleading or sending mixed messages. Just hold off signing anything until you have all the facts. Stay cautious Aries. Keep this week as risk-free as possible, especially regarding finances.
TAURUS APRIL 21 – MAY 20
Cooperation comes easily this week. You know which buttons to push to get others moving in the right direction without upsetting their sense of independence. Support comes from an unexpected source without you having to ask for it. Even an old rival may come over to your side. It seems you have much in common after all.
This week, you have the planets well and truly on side. While the rest of us are trying to cope with our tedious lot, you’re spared similar frustrations. Money looks plentiful, making a welcome change from recent cash embarrassment. Spend up while the going’s good. There’s also much to be said for team effort.
This week Mars provides a financial and creative boost. Right now your imagination’s firing and so is your energy. Just make sure the left hand knows what the right is doing, whether it be yours or someone else’s. Though other cosmic forces might try to slow professional progress, Virgo determination wins through.
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 23
Many Librans have been rushed lately. Perhaps you should stop for a minute and tend to more mundane tasks – groceries, for instance. You need to eat. On the upside: you start to notice much self-improvement. It’s all to do with a clever mind and strong personal magnetism. You’re also entitled to your fair share of fun.
SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 – NOVEMBER 22
Some Scorpios take an unscheduled trip down memory lane, perhaps confronting issues you feel need addressing. Think before you act. Truth be known, it’s better to throw life into cruise control. If you still feel like forcing the odd issue, make sure it’s done in a pleasant way. Treat yourself and loved ones to something special.

A kindred spirit may present an exciting proposal or opportunity. You prefer to be your own unique mastermind. Capricorns, intellectual and sometimes stubborn, like to have the first idea and the last word. This is one time to at least consider another viewpoint. Projects move slower than usual but there’s no rush anyway.
Life suddenly seems less stressful for many Aquarians. Daily worries give way to a sense of calm and security. Increased self-awareness also brings a deeper understanding of what you truly want from life. And you’re more willing to share. Your cosmic reward? The more you give, the more you gain.
You often keep others guessing, assuming that if someone cares enough they’ll either know your mind or ask the right questions. This week is different. You openly volunteer information, minus the sugar-coating and clever word play. That’s refreshing and much appreciated by many.
Get smarter mortgage advice & the most suitable loan for you Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Be assertive Sagittarius. Extract yourself from everyone’s beck and call and teach them self-management. You have your own needs to attend to. If something’s no longer working, you’re probably ready to make changes. A tough ask, perhaps, but by discarding outworn attitudes you’ll carry less baggage, making life easier.
For a while now many Geminis have suffered uncertainty but the universe never asks us to cope with situations we’re not ready for. So when this week brings you to a crisis point, you’ll be surprised at how well you handle the situation – with confidence and very little anxiety. Be proud.
Recent planetary shenanigans may have left you feeling a tad overwhelmed. However, this week helps lift exhaustion or sagging spirits. To top it off, finances look sharper than they have for a while. So should the cosmos signal the time’s right for extravagance, don’t argue. Stay amenable to surprising events.
If recent events have left you disheartened, remember that few situations are set in stone. When one way is blocked, find another. Life constantly shifts and changes, as the week ahead sets to prove. The upside: there should be more joy in relationships and the motivation to find better work prospects.
Everyone has their own unique perspective about how things have happened. Before you leap to conclusions, untangle any confusion or you’ll never know the real facts. Important personal decisions made this week mark a fresh start. Who or what you choose to embrace will influence your life for years to come.
You long to confide in someone but you’re not sure who to trust. Holding your cards too close isn’t the best idea either as you need someone to help you process all those confused thoughts. Just don’t call that gossipy or casual friend. Dial up a true confidante. You could also book a spa session to simply relax.
A revitalised Sun steps forward and Cancerians rise like a phoenix from the ashes. Take this as your cue to step back into the limelight. Relationship worries and career setbacks start to become a distant memory. You’ve triumphed over tragedy, now you can get back to what you do best – enjoying this lovely world of ours.
This week could find you a little wiser and much happier. For some this relates to work matters. If so, put forward projects no matter how daunting they seem. Thanks to a single-minded Sun, other Leos will look to resolve a long-standing mystery. A sudden epiphany could, perhaps, stir that special aha moment.
Don’t let it get to you Virgo. If this week runs more like a comedy of errors, try to laugh with every turn. If it all becomes too confusing, things will just run amuck, so whatever you had planned may not happen. This needn’t be a disaster, even if it is unscheduled. If still pushed for direction, be inspired by your amazing creativity.
If you have anything to announce to the world, do it now. You’re in the mood to tell it like it is. Insights come out of the blue, so give yourself permission to dream big. At the same time, be sure to involve others. Network your way towards success. Just be sure to give everyone equal attention to avoid hurt feelings.
Some extra cash should finally arrive, encouraging a new image and a happier social life. Despite most things going to plan, the week may still throw the occasional curve ball. If battling against an authority figure, stay in control. Bullies will always try to rob you of your rights. Best solution? Simply step away.

ON the first day, God created the dog and said: “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of 20 years.” The dog said: “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?” And God saw it was good. On the second day, God created the monkey and said: “Entertain people, do tricks and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a 20-year life span.” The monkey said: “Monkey tricks for 20 years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?” And God again saw it was good. On the third day, God created the cow and said: “You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of 60 years.”
The cow said: “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for 60 years. How about 20 and I’ll give back the other 40?” And God agreed it was good. On the fourth day, God created humans and said: “Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you 20 years.” But the human said: “Only 20 years? Could you possibly give me my 20, the 40 the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back and the ten the dog gave back? That makes 80, OK?” “OK,” said God. “You asked for it.” So that is why for our first 20 years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.
