There were plenty of students and parents who had come along to celebrate the school winning the Hot 91.1 'Slater & Gordon $5K payday' (see story page 5). As part of the fun of the day, the school had also set up a military style ‘obstacle course’, and the kids (and some of the teachers) seemed pretty keen to

Local News Current Councillors returned At the time of going to print, it appears that both the sitting Councillors – Rick Baberowski (Division 1) and Jenny McKay (Division 5) – have enough votes to win their respective Divisions comfortably. With pre-polling and postal votes yet to be counted, Rick has won 65% of the total vote and Jenny 59%. The other candidates would have to capture almost 100% of the remaining first preference votes to be counted to have any chance of overhauling either of

them. Rick campaigned on his achievements locally and those gained by a strong Council generally across the Sunshine Coast. This seems to have appealed to the voters as he now goes into his second term as Division 1 Councillor with the knowledge that his first preference vote total has more than doubled from the previous election. Similarly, Jenny campaigned strongly on the hard work that she puts into the community and the projects and improvements that hard work has delivered to local townships and community groups.

Being first elected to Maroochy Shire Council in 2000, this will be Jenny’s fifth term as a Councillor. Strong challengers from an all-female field this election has seen her first preference fall from 73% in 2012. Despite this, her overall approval is very strong, showing that her efforts have been recognised and rewarded. In the race for the Mayor, Mark Jamieson won with a landslide result, securing 61% of the primary vote (at the time of going to print). Although The Greens candidate Tony Gibson gained only 18% of the vote, this was a vast improvement on the 8% of first preferences the party received at the last state election. The referendum on fixed four year terms for State Parliament appears to have been given the seal of approval from the electorate, with 53% ticking ‘yes’. Unlike Federal referenda which have to be a majority vote in a majority of electorates, State plebiscites need just 50% plus 1 vote to gain ascendance. It is likely that the current Parliament will amend the State Constitution to fix parliamentary terms at four years, with the election to be held on the last Saturday of October.

Barry Hall gets suave for a cause By Sonia Clark GC&M News has been following the story of Mt Mellum’s Misty Bland who has been the driving force behind the ‘Vintage Calendar Girls’ project to raise awareness for Rare Cancers Australia. Following on from the success of last years’ calendar, Misty has recently finished the shooting for the 2017 calendar with AFL Legend Barry Hall. With this year’s calendar centred around a Gatsby inspired roaring 1920’s theme, Barry proved to be a suave 1920's gangster, proudly posing next to a 1927 Reo, supplied by a generous elderly man named Daryl. Filmed on location at Old Petrie Town in North Brisbane, the setting proved to be an immaculate backdrop that beautifully captured the 1920’s theme. Barry posed alongside his two leading ladies, for the epic front cover image; Alli a terminal cancer warrior, and Shelagh a stroke survivor, who has recently published abook of poetry. Both ladies looked sensational in their glamorous Gatsby frocks. “We had a fabulous photo shoot on Saturday, March 12 with Barry Hall. He is such a gentle

The other gorgeous models of the day included Tori, Kiah, Juliette, Tina, Rachael and Clare for the hero and PR images. Misty and the team are now looking for generous sponsors to assist with printing cost and major expenses incurred for the event launch. The Gala Launch has been booked in for later in the year and will be hosted at Old Petrie Town on Saturday, October 22 at 5.00pm, with special guest of honour in attendance, Barry Hall. Hot 91.1 broadcast from local school Glasshouse Mountains State School P&C Grants Officer Kerry Cairns recently contacted GC&M News to advise that the school had been chosen to be part of Hot 91 'Slater & Gordon $5K payday'. Hot 91.1 promoted all through February for schools to nominate to be involved, they selected 10 of the entries which were then given to Slater and Gordon, who then selected five finalists. The school was notified on Monday, March 7 that they were one of five finalists and that the winner would now be decided by public voting online at HOT91.com.au from Friday, March 11 Sunday, March 13. They were advised that they would be up against the Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Sunshine Coast Grammar, Maleny State High School and Mooloolah State School. “We swung into action to work out the best way

to get the information out to the public that we needed their help and that help was going to have to come from far and wide if we were ever going to win,” Kerry said. So flyers were printed and a huge banner was painted...the banner went from the front fence of the school on Friday and then spent the weekend hung prominently in the local shopping centre car park. Many of our local shops had posters stuck to their counters and windows and flyers were handed out to shoppers. We even had laminated copies of our 'plea for votes' stuck to the bar tables over at the local Tavern, in hope that many of the patrons could possibly take an interest and give us a vote or two! Apart from our school community voting all weekend, we got the message pretty much out Australia wide, said Kerry. Clearly our passion must have been contagious as our school collected 51% of the overall votes cast.

That's a massive effort and one that our little school out in the Hinterland is extremely proud of! The school had previously been looking into how to raise the funds to purchase 'GHMSS sports uniforms' which would be worn by our students representing a range of interschool sports and regional carnivals including AFL, NRL, netball, soccer, softball, and oz tag, to name a few. The $5,000.00 will go a long way to having our children look fantastic when representing our school and giving them the sense of pride, honour and achievement when wearing these uniforms. The school would also like to install a fit park in the grounds at GHMSS which they saw the $5,000.00 assisting with. The school would sincerely like to thank everyone that voted and encouraged others to do so as well as the local businesses promoted the cause in their premises.

Maleny local takes out Kenilworth ‘dunny’ design competition Selected from a field of almost 200 entrants from around Australia, and even one from the UK, the winning entry was Canistrum from Malenybased designer Michael Lennie who receives an acquisitive prize of $10,000.00. Mr Lennie said his entry was designed to be both art and a functional public toilet for Isaac Moore Park at the gateway to the town of Kenilworth. He describes Canistrum as “an unfinished basket reflecting an unfinished history.” The word canistrum is Latin for wicker basket. “It brings ancient craft into the future public domain,” Mr Lennie said in his entry’s artistic statement. “It’s bold and vibrant colours create a striking effect against the Kenilworth Conondale Ranges’ tree line.” Council will now work with the winner to develop detailed construction plans on the winning concept.

Shop 7, Beerwah Village

“We will undertake a detailed feasibility analysis to investigate costs, budget availability and forecasted timing for the construction of Canistrum,” Infrastructure Services acting director Tom Jamieson said. The winning entry was selected by a judging panel that included well-respected architect John Mainwaring, Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson, South Australian sculptor Greg Johns, Sandra Conte and Shirley Moreland, President of Kenilworth Arts Council. It came from a shortlist of 12 entries that were on display for public comment at the Kenilworth Hotel. Mr Mainwaring said the winning entrant delivered on the competition’s goal of producing an iconic, innovative and functional public artwork.

Community workshops revive possum skin tradition By Sonia Clark Recently the Wiruungga Organisation ran a ‘Possum Skin Cloak’ workshop that was held over two weekends in Conondale on February 27 and 28 and March 5 and 6. Instigated by indigenous artist Carol McGregor who is also studying her thesis on the tradition and cultural significance of possum skin cloaks; the closed workshops had a group of around five elders along with 15-20 participants. Drawing upon thousands of years of cultural knowledge and tradition, the possum skin cloak was traditionally started upon the birth of a child. Throughout the life of that child, additional skins were added on which depicted drawings of their life story. Eventually at the end of their life, the person would be buried in the cloak. The cloaks embody significant meaning and ritual. The workshop that produced this traditional indigenous art form was held in conjunction with Artslink Queensland and the State Library of Queensland using pelts that were imported from New Zealand. The creative workshop held at the Wiruungga Organisation land follows on from a successful workshop that was held in Kenilworth last year. The cloak will be on view along with documentary footage of its creation at the State Library of Queensland over a period later this year until early next year - when it will be returned and housed at the Wiruungga Organisation. The Cloak depicts the story of the Wiruungga Organisation; it illustrates how the organisation

Wiruungga admiring the story of a skin cloak at a Kenilworth workshop in 2015 started as well as its dreams and aspirations including one of its core aims which is to build bridges between indigenous Australians and others. Using contemporary techniques inspired by traditional practices, participants in the workshops used over 12 pelts which were then stitched together to create the adult cloak. The stories were illustrated freehand onto the skins by elder Wiruungga Dunggiirr and then burnt into the pelt. Natural ochres were then added to enhance the cloak. Road safety - It’s a timely reminder with Easter school holidays fast approaching to take extra care on the roads. We have had a lot of warm weather with quite a few days where there have been heavy showers. While wet roads at any time require extra care, it is especially true when it is warm and sunny immediately before the rain. Under these conditions roads can become particularly slippery and stopping distances much longer. There have been a number of mostly minor traffic crashes recently in these conditions, most of which could have been avoided if drivers simply allowed more room between themselves and the vehicle in front of them. Neighbourhood disputes - Police are sometimes called to help settle arguments between neighbours. Many of these incidents are because of miscommunication or lack of communication between the parties. Many neighbour disputes are quickly resolved once both parties understand what the other party is upset about. For some great tips on how to approach your neighbour about an issue go to http://www.qld.gov.au/law/ legal-mediation-and-justice-of-the-peace/setting-disputes-out-of-court/ Scam emails - We have had quite a few people calling lately in relation to hoax emails claiming to contain a subpoena. Neither the Queensland Police nor the Australian Federal Police would contact you in this manner in relation to a subpoena or warrant. If an official document needs to be served on you a police officer will generally call to ask you to attend the station or come to your house. If for some reason that can’t be arranged, then it is possible with some documents to email or mail them, in which case you would be aware that the document was on its way. Blue Light - Our next Beerwah Blue Light is on Friday, April 15, at the Beerwah Community Hall (next to the Library).

“We recently asked Sheree Tweedale from Palmwoods Real Estate to assess and sell our property in West Woombye. We had tried two other Real Estate agents, paid a lot of money, and nothing seemed to be happening. Sheree immediately loved our property, reassessed the marketing, and did everything she could to highlight our property and place it in view of those who would love it and buy it. I had never imagined any Real Estate agent would insert furniture into the property, make sure the lawns were mowed, and then hold the open houses, make a movie of our property, and actually sell it rather than wait around for a buyer. Because sell it she did! We cannot emphasise how much of a relief it was to have a true professional look after the listing and actual sale of our property. If you have any Real Estate for sale and desire an honest assessment and effort, we suggest you save yourself time and heartache and highly recommend Sheree to get the job done.” Rob Shackleford - Owner 430-436 Blackall Range Road, West Woombye

Recently the Zonta Club of the Blackall Range hosted their International Women’s Day ‘Dusk on the Deck’ at the Maleny Community Centre with a group of enthusiastic local women (and a few men) attending from across a wide range of local community organisations. The evening saw the presentation of the inaugural winner of the Woman of Achievement Award, awarded to someone who has not necessarily had recognition, but who has spent many hours contributing to the community. Congratulations to Pam Marsden who was presented with a Zonta Rose on the night in recognition of the extraordinary amount she has contributed to local community groups, including Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, Maleny Singers and Maleny Community Gym. Club President Alison Huth said in 2003 Pam received a RADF grant to design and knit a collection of 52 pairs of character socks which were displayed at the Maleny Library. “Pam was also part of a group of members from the Maleny Contract Bridge Club who for many years held an annual Bridge/Mahjong day,” she said. “These days raised $10,000 going to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. Pam completed her Bachelor of Health at University of Sunshine Coast, graduating in 2014.” During her studies she also mentored other students and was part of the AIME program mentoring Indigenous students. Pam also received the Australian Geographic Society award for her studies in sustainability and an invitation to join Golden Keys for high achievers. On the night Pam said she was very honoured to be singled out for the award. “I am honoured also because of the depth of talent within the community. The way in which so many people generously contribute their time, energy and skills is inspirational,” she said. “I would like to add that being involved in the community, whether formally as part of a group, organisation or club; or whether that involvement is simple acts of kindnesses – such as checking on a neighbour for instance, enriches not only the community as a whole but our lives as well,” said Pam. “I would like to commend the members of Blackall Range Zonta Club for instigating this award to recognise efforts of women at grassroots or local level.

“I would also like to thank Zonta for a lovely evening and thanks also to the sponsors Ray White Real Estate, Maleny Optical and Capers Bookstore. I will treasure this moment and plant my Zonta rose in pride of place,” she said. Zonta International celebrates IWD with Zonta Rose Day. The Zonta Rose is a yellow rose symbolising the joining of Zonta clubs around the world in friendship. Zonta Club of Blackall Range’s coordinator for International Women’s Day program on March 8 was Judith Ross – Smith who convinced the club for the first time to do a 5.30pm to 7.00pm ‘cocktail’ party on the Maleny Community Centre Deck. “It is always harder work to organise a new event than one that is tried and true, so my committee needed to be creative,” she said. “Hopefully the club will do it again and our experience will help them, as I believe it was a success. “I was especially pleased with the number of representatives from volunteer service groups that joined us, the level of chatter on the deck, and the obvious popular endorsement of our inaugural Woman of Achievement.”

Business Local News News Maleny Commerce Update With Spencer Shaw

Thanks to Sandie Johnson, Sunshine Coast Council's Waste 2 Resource Co-ordinator for a very informative presentation at our last Networking Breakfast. This discussion was based on the practicalities of what is and what can be recycled within Council's waste collection services facilities.

Chamber Secretary Karen Shaw, with Sandie Johnson from Sunshine Coast Council, and Jim Straker from Zero Waste

Lachlan O'Shea from Lockstar Energy, David Balens from Chilli Telecommunications and Mark Burgunder from Buda Organic Foods There was plenty of food for thought for those in attendance and lots of questions, certainly showing the relevance and interest in the subject. As my nan used to say, “where there’s muck, there’s money” (sounds better in a strong Lancashire accent) and what we throw away is a resource yet to be exploited. It’s simply good business to be managing our waste better for ourselves and for the planet. Congratulations to Sunshine Coast Council for installing their first recycling bins on Maple street (near the IGA) please use these correctly, make

sure to give council some positive feedback on this great move and maybe we’ll get some more! Parking is always a big issue for Maple Street, Maleny, and we’ve still got too many business owners and staff parking on Maple Street. Parking on Maple for the whole day takes up valuable parking spots for customers who would otherwise be able to shop at your business, and then quite possibly give up and go elsewhere. After a chat up and down Maple Street by Brea, our new admin officer, it appears most businesses are aware of this issue and are parking off Maple Street, but make sure you have a chat with your staff to ensure that they are parking elsewhere too. If we can’t solve this issue as a business community ourselves, parking meters could be the option council chooses to solve this issue. While on the subject of parking, we need to tackle our parking issues from multiple angles (subtle parking joke). One great option is that if you can walk or ride to work, please do so. Tourists travel from across the state, country and world to walk around beautiful Maleny and we are lucky enough to live here all the time!

Show Society shows fun side

By Lea Parkes This week GC&M News caught up with Conondale Graphic Designer Kristy from K Hope Design and got the lowdown on how she approached the task of refreshing the look and feel of the Maleny Show Society Showbook and Website. Kristy says she was strongly influenced by the ‘hinterland colour palette’. “When I think of Maleny and surrounds I see bright blue sky, lime green (almost fluorescent) hillsides, with postcard scenes of dairy cows dotting pastures,” she said. All those colours have been carried throughout the new style, while also retaining and integrating the traditional blue ‘show ribbon’ logo. Show Society Secretary Lois White said she likes the vintage (shabby chic) look of many smallgoods farms and producers and show societies in the United Kingdom, where they use blackboard or typewriter fonts, sculpted mirrors and stitched borders. While these design features are really popular in the design world currently, we also wanted to give Maleny Show a more relevant coastalcountry atmosphere, and avoid the tweed jacket and strides look, or that we’re trying to be ‘on trend’ and ‘uber cool’, said Kristy. We were also motivated by being fun, not serious. Our cheeky steer evolved on Facebook and in last’s years advertising as a fun character to carry through our main showground events (Wood Expo, Muscle on the Mountain, Shopping Local) and he adds a less serious, more familyfriendly feel to our public image, she said. The steer pops up in all kinds of places wearing fun hats or hiding in plain sight in advertisements, doing human things kind of like a ‘Where’s Wally’ game. We thought it might subtly reconfirm that Maleny Show Society and the Show itself isn’t all serious – it’s about fun, having a laugh, and mixing with real folk, Kristy said. Apart from those aspects, we aimed for consistency, and carrying the theme across everything, without removing it too far from the traditional aspects of the show or society. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Kristy’s work, head to the Maleny Show Society Website www.malenyshowsociety. org.au for a look and remember to like the Maleny Show Society Facebook page to keep up-to-date with what they are planning. www.gcnews.com.au

Local business helps thousands with Cloud-Based Start Up

Business feature Tyler Maclaren, Business Manager for Transportable Shade Sheds, says that through a small business support platform called Saver6. com, they have started helping thousands of Australian families. “We have developed a customised trailer that allows someone to start up their own business, selling our range of products, which is a great concept on its own, but with the available support offered by Saver6. com it takes their business to a whole new level,” Tyler explains. “We are really excited about getting people into a business that is going to work for them and provide the opportunity for that person to take their small business to the rest of the world.” Trailer owners, Luke and Julie Palmer (pictured) from Witta have connected with the Saver6 and Transportable Shade Sheds joint venture and couldn’t be happier with the support and exposure the new start-up has created for them. “We’re over the moon with the support we receive and the income that we have been able to generate since coming on board,” Julie said recently at a training seminar hosted by Transportable Shade Sheds. “Already, we have the ability to expand our small business and help other hard working locals find employment through this great opportunity.” Luke and Julie have worked with many businesses and individuals recently, which serviced the needs of the local community but also have major global goals. They are even in consultation with Transportable Shade Sheds to grow the trailer program overseas with connections in the USA and Canada. So if you need a shade shed and you want to support a local business that is having a go, call Luke and Julie Palmer on 0428 202 111 today or go and see them at one of the local Sunshine Coast Country Shows this year. If you or someone you know may be interested in starting up a business with Saver6.com, multiple opportunities exist across Australia with the new Saver6.com business start-up platform. They give you 24/7 business exposure and the feeling of being part of a bigger group. You may enjoy working from home with lots of support such as a cloud based invoicing system, social media support and constant sales generation. You don’t have to be interested in sheds either, there are many small business opportunities across multiple industries in each hub area across Australia which are available through Saver6.com. “Saver6 is about helping build local economies while providing exposure and support to all through their structured support plan,” says Tyler. “Business support is even available through mentoring, networking events and many online forums are provided. Saver6.com endeavours to be the world’s most inexpensive Supportive Business Platform.” To unlock your potential today, contact Saver6.com by emailing info@saver6.com or check out the website – www.saver6.com

Community News

Big interest for no interest By Sonia Clark Since 2014, Landsborough Area Community Association operating from Morris House Neighbourhood Centre has been offering Hinterland residents on low or limited incomes, the opportunity to access no interest loans. Coordinated by Ian Hope, who ran a similar scheme in Mackay, the Landsborough Area No Interest Loan Scheme (laNILS) seeks to support adults who are excluded from mainstream financial services. Offering interest free loans up to $1,200.00 to purchase new household items or services to improve quality of life, the scheme was originally instigated through the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Order in Australia in the 1980’s. This social initiative branched into other financial services and resulted in the formation of the not-for-profit organisation Good Shepherd Microfinance which helps marginalised people break out of the cycle of financial exclusion. By accessing an accountable loan scheme agreement instead of charity, people are allowed to develop a sense of financial worth, wellbeing and social inclusion. Nationally there are over 250 NILS providers that operate in over 500 locations. Since commencing the scheme, The Landsborough Area Community Association has had over 120 enquiries and has offered around 25 loans to Hinterland residents. Loans have been used to cover items such as whitegoods, medical equipment, minor car repairs and computers.

Improved shade for Glass House students

Ken Husband, Ian Hope and Greg Kesby from LaNILS Clients are generally referred to the service which is accessible to low income recipients with annual incomes generally under $45,000. Currently three loan officers are on hand at Morris House to assist in running the program, and with supporting documentation they look at a client’s financial situation and work out the most viable client focussed way to repay the loan over a 12-18month period. Personal accountability is vitally important as the laNILS has limited capital with which to provide loans – ‘so what goes around comes around’. Each successful loan repayment allows another person in similar circumstances to access the scheme. Earlier this year, the service has extended to include Caloundra and has been operating out of the Caloundra Community Centre who is affiliated with Morris House. To find out more, contact Morris House at Landsborough on 5494 1255 or email lanils@ landsborough.com

Lions donate $100,000 for 100 projects Mooloolah Community funds for a fighter To mark Lions Club International’s centennial, the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range has signed on to help Lions Australia give away more than $100,000 to over 100 local projects as part of its Community 100 program. The $100,000 will be available in the form of $1,000 grants to projects which make a difference to the community in the fields of youth, vision, hunger or the environment. The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range is one of more than 100 of Australia’s clubs chosen to form ‘Team 100’, which will help to roll out the grant opportunity locally. Local organisations, initiatives and projects in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland region and the surrounding areas, are encouraged to make the most of the $1,000 grant opportunity offered. Lions Australia Executive Officer Rob Oerlemans said the Community 100 program provides local clubs with the opportunity to reach out to communities and create new partnerships. “If you can think of a community need, the chances are there’s a Lions Club doing something about it,” Mr Oerlemans said. “For almost 100 years, Lions have shared a core belief that community is what we make it and the Lions Australia Community 100 program celebrates this belief. Lions Australia, which will celebrate 70 years of service in 2017, was first established in 1947 and is currently Lions Club International’s 18th oldest club in operation. Each year the local clubs of Lions Australia raises between $25 - $30 million for community initiatives, projects and causes. “Lions Australia has a proud history and therefore it is fitting to mark our international organisation’s centenary of service by doing what has made us great, helping others.” The Community 100 program is open for submissions from February 25 until June 30, and entrants are encouraged to apply online via http://www. homelife.com.au/lifestyle/things-we-love/community100 The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range will then select three finalists, from which Lions Australia will nominate a winning project by mid-August 2016. For more information on how to apply and submission criteria please visit http://www.homelife.com.au/lifestyle/things-we-love/community100 or http://lionsclubs.org.au/activities/community100/

Students, staff and community members of Mooloolah State School came together for a wonderful cause recently. It was to donate to a little two-yearold girl called Mia and her family, mum Rhianne and dad Ryan, who are riding the roller coaster ride, in the fight against Leukaemia. Mia’s story can be followed on Facebook through ‘Mia’s Diary’. Students at the school wore free dress for a gold coin donation and we are very proud of everyone’s efforts to raise some funds to go directly to the family at this time of need. Mia’s family have helped raise a lot of money for the Leukaemia Foundation, and we thought we could give back to them. It was amazing to see just how many children raided their piggy banks to put in extra. Families and community members also donated money or brought raffle tickets and staff members donated prizes. Local business owner, Kristy Kowald, from Mooloolah Hair Studio & Essential Beauty, also got involved and came to parade at the school to shave the principal and groundsman’s heads, waxed Mr Lowe’s legs and coloured others hair. So thank you Mooloolah Hair Studio for your wonderful contribution to our day. The local IGA and Mooloolah Meats also allowed us to put a tin in their stores for locals to donate, so thank you to these businesses also. Mooloolah State School and community, we couldn’t be prouder of your efforts, thanks for digging deep. We wish Mia and her family all the best and hope our small contribution is a help.

Easter chocolate can be fatal for your pets

Tasty & Safe Easter Treats

This Easter, it may be OK for you to treat yourself, friends and family to a few Easter eggs but giving chocolate to your beloved dog or cat can have devastating effects. There are certain properties in chocolate that are toxic to cats and dogs – specifically theobromine and caffeine. The different way that dogs and cats metabolise to us Greenies Treats humans, means that they can’t break down these two (340g varieties) chemicals in the same way we do. $21.69 The compounds build up in their bodies, acting like a powerful stimulant. They quickly reach levels where they cause an overdose leading to vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and possibly death. Don’t make the mistake this Easter of putting your pet Yogurt Drops in harm’s way. There are plenty of other treat options (1kg bag) that the Easter Bunny can leave for your furry friend.

Vale Mary B. McAlary 1920 – 2016

Contributed by Lindsey Grogan Mary was born and raised in Queensland moving to Glass House Mountains with her husband Keith in the early 1980's where they built their home. At that time Barbara Grigor was forming a group of like-minded ladies with craft and creative interests in mind, to meet in her home. Mary joined with 17 others to form a group of friends who met with quilting and patchwork desires. This group continued to grow into the Mountain Quilters of some 60 plus members today who now meet in the Peachester Hall. Life Membership was awarded to Barbara Grigor, as the founder of this group, along with Mary McAlary and Clare Brear as founding members. Mary along with other members worked to create many quilts for various Charity groups and organisations in the area. She was always cheerful and happy to help with great enthusiasm for the task at hand, quilt shows, ‘show and tell’ plus visiting groups on various occasions, bringing sunshine to those who had the pleasure of her company. She was a delightful friend to many. Mary moved to Townsville last year to be close to her extended family. Sadly her health declined and she was hospitalised where she peacefully passed on Friday, March 12. To talk of getting old was something she did not like to hear or say. She was 95 - turning 96 this September, and always saying she would wait to receive her telegram from the Queen. Not quite, but almost Mary. Mary’s Husband Keith passed away in 1998. Her children were Margaret (deceased), Marie, Bill and Terry. She had eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren with one soon to be born. Farewell Mary, know that you were much loved and will be sadly missed by your loving family and your many friends.

We know the figure below represents the average distribution of this publication. No more, no less. It’s the absolute truth. How do we know? Well, we have our publication audited by the Circulations Audit Bureau (CAB). Why? Because we are committed to protecting our advertisers. The CAB audits our newspapers to make sure advertisers are getting all of what they are paying for. There is a lot of money at stake, but a surprisingly large number of advertisers blindly trust the numbers they are given by unaudited media. NAMBOUR We just don’t understand why. Why would an advertiser risk paying too much for too little? maleny mooloolah glenview palmview Ask yourself this, what kind of media outlet wouldn’t want to be audited? The Caloundra Family History Research Inc Empowering women Contributed by Ros Kuss The group welcomed Janice Cooper to the March general meeting to present her talk on ‘Getting the Best Results from our Research’. A member of the Professional Historians Association who taught research skills to students during her long career as a teacher and teacher librarian, Janice’s talk was concise. It made a lot of sense, and reinforced how we should be doing our research. Her handout was clearly written, easily understood, and will be very helpful to keep reminding us of the correct researching process. Those notes will be available at the resource centre for refreshment by members. The group’s regular ‘This Day in History’ segment was given by Bev Smith, one of our Hinterland members. With the meeting being held on St Patrick’s Day, Bev really utilised her heritage by including the Irish, the Scots and the Aussies in her presentation, where she wore many hats and entertained the almost full meeting room. Save The Date: A Commemorative Centenary Event of The Great War 1914-1918, a full day seminar on Saturday, July 2 at the Caloundra District Indoor Bowling Association Hall in Burke Street, Golden Beach. Topics covered by renowned speakers will be The Horse and its Trooper, Queensland Surveyors and Mapping in WWI, Health of the ANZACs, and Fromelles. All enquiries about the group and events held are welcomed by contacting Valerie on 5437 3879, Roz on 5493 1197, or Dawn on 5492 2208. Visitors are welcome to attend any of the group’s events, as well as carry out research at the resource centre, on payment of a $5.00 entry fee. Email address is caloundrafamilyres@y7mail.com. The Calendar of Events to the end of April is on the group’s website at www. caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au which also has a map to locate the building.

Maz explained that the Institute of Women has been formed to empower and enable women to lead more Gwen Simcoe presenting Maz fulfilling lives; a perfect subject for Schirmer with a certificate of this month with it being International appreciation Women’s Month. An inspirational speaker, Maz has 14,000 Facebook followers, she took us through her life journey and the experiences that enabled her to develop a process, that provides a complete solution, designed specifically for the female mind. The session wasn’t all serious; she had our ladies laughing at things such as wearing glasses to suit your mood. Our next monthly outing on Wednesday, April 6, will be Morning Tea and Trivia at Pat’s place, 6 Sugar Coast Drive, Glass House at 10.00am. Gold coin donation. Beerwah Lion’s Club

Contributed by Bob Banner At the March meeting held at the Hideaway Restaurant, members reported on the recent barbecue held at Bunning’s Hardware in Caloundra, with the day being highly successful, raising funds for various Lion’s Community projects. The highlight of the evening was the induction of three new Lions – David Ebdon sponsored by Lion Greg Howard, and Grant Thornton and Michael Wise, both sponsored by President Patricia Jutila. The induction ceremony was performed by Zone Chairman Rob Hobson. Rob and his wife Dianne were guests of the club for the evening. Another incoming Lion, Doug Sweedman, who transferred from Yungaburra in North Queensland, introduced himself to the Club, giving a brief talk about life on the Atherton Tableland. Guest speaker for the evening was Debra Blakeney from ‘Lions In Place’, formerly LEAC Lion’s Emergency Accommodation Centre. Debra gave an informed talk on the service that Lion’s In Place perform, helping persons displaced, usually by violence, get their lives back on track.

How easy it is to be “conned” by Ian Hall, from All Energy HQ

Country people (those who live west of the Bruce Highway) … that my friend is you and I and all those nice folks in your street … we are more trusting than those city folks, the seaside suburbs. So when travelling sales people knock on your door with a “special offer” that you need to decide to accept “now”, then be wary. No shopkeeper, tradesman or lawnmower man who lives in our country area ever pressures you like this. Because we are all ‘locals’ and locals don’t pressure locals just to make a sale – because we want to maintain a friendly relationship with you. Should you purchase elsewhere, you may still come back to the shop locally next time. Local is local, here, accessible … and you can knock on their door. But door-to-door sales people don’t live here and generally don’t care. They are on a mission, just make the sale and move on. Bad luck if the customer experiences problems later; Mr Door-to-Door has left the area, never to return. Have you been told … “Hello, you are on the solar institute list and you are eligible for a government rebate” or similar words. The facts are there is no such list. Everyone who has an electricity bill is probably eligible for a government ‘solar bonus rebate’ on a solar system installed. Thank goodness the law gives you a 10 day cooling off period to cancel the contract after you have got a quote from a local supplier. Don’t get conned. Shop locally. Business feature

Property owners and other affected parties are being invited to provide feedback on the future management of weed and pest animals in Queensland. Feedback will inform the Queensland Weed and Pest Animal Strategy 2016-20, in preparation for the Biosecurity Act 2014 (the Act) commencing on July 1. Dr John Robertson, General Manager for Invasive Plant and Animals with Biosecurity Queensland said this was the final stage of consultation. “It’s important that land managers as well as government have a clear understanding of their responsibilities when it comes to managing weed and pest animals,” said Dr Robertson. “It’s estimated that pest animals cost Queensland $215 million each year by preying on livestock, causing crop losses, competing for pasture and spreading disease. “This doesn’t include uncosted environmental and social impacts such as disease spread and traffic hazards – so in reality the cost is much higher. “Invasive weeds are also a challenge, costing the state an estimated $600 million each year in primary production losses and control costs, and degrading the natural environment. “Clearly defined and accepted roles and responsibilities are crucial to the success of minimising these impacts through long-term management of weed and pest animals in Queensland. “That is why community and industry leadership and cooperation in the planning and development of strategies is key to maximising the benefits of weed and pest animal management. “I encourage anyone who has an interest in, or if you believe you will be affected by, weed and pest animals in Queensland, to provide feedback on how we manage them into the future.” The consultation will run until close of business April 26. To have your say on the future management of weed and pest animals in Queensland, visit www.qld.gov.au/weedandpeststrategy or call the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries on 13 25 23.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association In our minds we’re already gone with Sue Tanner It’s about to happen, after the Easter break all the buildings presently on the Reserve site will be demolished for the new development. I’m cleaning a corner in our big shed to store all the Friends stock (great excuse for a clean-up of said shed). Moving everything out will be a huge job for everyone but all good in the end I hope. In the meantime, vollies are battening down for the Easter holidays, usually a very busy time especially Easter Sunday when many families picnic or barbecue, dine in the café and walk in the rainforest. There are also a number of exciting children’s activities being held at the reserve throughout the holidays with details available on page 24. Booking will be essential. After the recent rain, the rainforest walk is a fungi lovers’ delight – all the colours of the rainbow. It’s certainly worth a walk and it is a little cooler and not as humid in the forest. The next meeting of the Friends will be held on April 16 at 9.30am for a cuppa and 10.00am for the meeting. Please note – this time we will be in The Veranda Room of the Maleny Community Centre. Our guest speaker will be the winner of our Honours Scholarship at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Ryan Newis. He will explain the how, when, where, and why of his research into native bees.

Neddy’s Nosebag This edition we thought we’d have a chat with owner Lesley Wooler about what the hottest items on the menu at Neddy’s Nosebag are. Speaking with Lesley, it seems that that the most popular item by far is the Golden Fried Chicken (GFC). It’s a longterm customer favourite, Lesley has regulars that just keep coming back time after time for the specially coated fried chicken that can be bought either individually as a particular piece (i.e. breast, thigh, wing) or as part of a pack (snack packs start at $5.20 for a piece of chicken and chips). Many of the customers come back to order their favourite part of the chicken so now Lesley often knows what her regulars want before they even order! Customers also love the hamburgers with prices starting at $7.00. Lesley thinks their popularity comes down to having big sized meals that ‘aren’t skimped on anything’ along with everything made freshly instore with locally sourced meat.

Holiday fun at Vacation Care If you would like something fun to do over the Easter school holidays then some of our local vacation care programs are worth checking out. Many families are entitled to CCB (child care benefit) and CCR (child care rebate) subsidies which can be applied to your daily fees to reduce your cost of attending. Mooloolah Outside School Hours and Vacation Care are doing lots of activities around the theme of environment and growing things. They have new gardens with herbs started and during the first week kids will be looking at activities around the theme ‘How does your Garden Grow?’ which includes making a little scarecrow. Also planned for the week is stained glass leaf craft as well as the opportunity to learn how to sprout seeds. At the end of week one will be an excursion to see ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ at the movies. In the second week, kids will be making paper plate scarecrows and ‘dirt slice’ to eat. Activities also include going to the local dam for a sausage sizzle, a puppet show ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, and making sock puppets. The week will finish with making paper flowers and activities for Environment Day. Any school age child in the area can be enrolled and families are entitled to CCB and CCR for the holiday fun. Please contact Belinda to book in and gather any further information you wish. Come along and make new friends. Open from 7.00am until 6.00pm daily during the week. Mooloolah After School and Vacation Care Program, King Road Mooloolah admin@mooloolahoshc.com contact Belinda on 5494 7491. Glenview School is running their Kidz Bizz vacation care program with each day of the holidays split into a morning and afternoon activity - kids can come for a full day or half day care. Most of the activities planned over the two weeks will incur no additional costs. Vaccination levels too low

Shadow Health Minister Mark McArdle has expressed his disappointment and dismay that Sunshine Coast immunisation rates reportedly fall behind the national target of 95% by 6.8%. “According to the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register just 88.2% of Coast children are immunised. This equates to a disturbing 11.8% of Sunshine Coast children under the age of five, and 13% of two-year-olds, at risk of contracting or spreading diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, meningococcal, and chicken pox, among others. “We have all seen those horrific images on television of children with whooping cough gasping for air. To know that by vaccinating children under five, to not have to go through the excruciating experience of watching an infant cough so uncontrollably and so violently that they die, is a tremendous relief for any parent. “So why isn’t the message getting through? The decision not to vaccinate one child actually threatens the health of an entire community. “While some diseases are less common than others, they still exist and without immunisation, we will face disease outbreaks, serious illness and worse still, preventable deaths. “I urge parents to discuss any concerns they may have with their doctor and avoid delaying the decision. It is extremely important immunisation starts as early as possible in a child’s life if we are to prevent the spread of disease,” Mr McArdle said.

School News No bullying Brodie Pillar and Adie Read after their ‘shave’

World’s Greatest Shave

The World’s Greatest Shave came to Beerwah State High School recently with this year’s Student Council coordinating the fundraising event for the Leukaemia Foundation and school captain, Sharlie Dal Broi the MC. Staff member Adie Read has personal reasons for participating in this year’s event as her cousin is currently fighting Leukaemia. Her tireless fundraising has raised over $2,000. Brodie Pillar in Year 10 had been growing his hair for a year and a half and took the opportunity to fundraise for the Leukaemia Foundation before having his locks clipped. Senior students Jordan Pearce, Jackson Hutchinson, Jakob Nolan, George Sneesby, Brodie Wheadon and Matt Jones, undertook the painful process of having their legs waxed for the event. Student donations were collected on the day. A special thank you to the following volunteers who donated their time and resources to clip and wax - male and female body waxing specialist Tracey Jones, parent volunteer Linda McRostie, staff member Amanda Kuspiel and ex-students, Taylah Van Der Sanden and Jess Goulder. Donations are still being accepted by the link on the School website until the end of March. The Student Council will be involved in more fundraising and school events during the year. Stay tuned.

Friday, March 18, is the National Day of action against bullying. Beerwah State School students were encouraged to wear orange accessories to school and every student received a ‘Bullying No Way’ wristband as a reminder of this very important message. Under the direction of chaplain Linda, students entered in a class colouring in competition with the best ‘Bullying No Way’ message, and all classrooms were decorated with the orange/no bullying theme. Every class participated in a ‘Bullying No Way’ presentation delivered by chappy giving the

opportunity for students to discuss what bullying is and isn’t, the importance of supporting friends who are being bullied and strategies to use, if they are a bullying victim.

Great opportunity for leaders Contributed by Kylie Merola Nine student leaders from Landsborough State School recently had an incredible opportunity to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Brisbane. The day is organised by the Halogen

Foundation, whose mission is to inspire and support young leaders. They joined other student leaders from across Queensland to hear amazing life stories and inspirational messages from a series of key note speakers. Amongst the list of presenters were well known names including Ian Stewart (Police Commissioner), Pippa Sheehan (Ten Eyewitness News), Josh Richards (Astronaut) and Nathan Want (Youth Speaker). Students learnt all about leadership and 'Mastering the Little', as making a difference does not happen overnight. The little things add up over time to BIG things. All students worked hard to get the most out of the day. They came away with a renewed sense of vision and confidence in their role and were inspired to make a difference in their world.

You Said It A request

Please stop printing anti science letters from people who have no training in climate. ‘A civilization simply cannot survive if large portions of that civilization have declared war on facts.’ (Peter Sinclair) Thanks! Name supplied

Climate change

Two things that distinguish scientific method from mere opinion are: Conclusions are evidence-based and verifiable. All positions are regarded with scepticism, including one’s own position. Therefore conclusions are continually reviewed and weighed against all available evidence. What is generally lacking in positions held by climate change deniers is a) scepticism about their own position, and b) critical examination of all the evidence at hand ‘evidence’ is cherry-picked from dubious sources. Scientific understanding of global warming is increasing, but not complete. The position held by the vast majority of the scientific community is that climate change is largely due to human activity. Such organisations as NASA, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the CSIRO, and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) all blame increased human activity for the rising average surface temperature of the Earth. NASA and IPCC recently reported their findings that last year was the Earth's warmest since record-keeping began in 1880, and by a large margin. Fifteen of the top 16 warmest years have occurred since 2000. The polar caps are observably melting, as are glaciers and permafrost. Sea levels are rising, the oceans are getting warmer and more acidic – all this is verifiable. Melting permafrost is releasing methane (a worse greenhouse gas than CO2) in increasingly alarming levels. According to IPCC's fourth assessment report, the U.S. Geological Survey, and other reports, the burning of fossil fuels accounts for around 30 billion tons of CO2 each year, which is 130 times the amount produced by volcanoes. The evidence at hand (and which continues to be gathered) has convinced the scientific community thus far. According to the CSIRO, increases in extreme climate events will pose challenges for Australia in the future. Even in the unlikely event that scientists turn out to have misinterpreted the data, surely it is beholden on humanity to be part of the solution, not the problem? Ian Williams Glass House Mountains

Interesting read

Global Warming/Climate Change Alarmists, from Peter Bowles in GC&M News March 9, who gives us his insights into ‘REAL science’. He asks us to accept ‘findings of a real scientist, like Gregg Thompson’. I assume he is referring to a Brisbane Gregg Thompson (and stand corrected if wrong) who is an amateur astronomer. Mr Thompson has done some remarkable work in his field of interest, astronomy, and then by default, according to Peter Bowles, this makes him a (self-proclaimed) oracle of ‘REAL science’ on climate, the environment, etc. Mr Thompson even provides the answers to the six questions put by Peter (accessible on-line for those who are interested). But as to the question of whether the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere from volcanic eruptions is greater than man-made emissions, I would rather side with research and reports coming from a variety of other sources, which, not exclusive to, but, include the following: Scientists from the Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory, Volcanologists from the US Geological Survey Even Earth including Dr Terrance Gerlach, and The Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Centre. Reports and peer-reviewed research from the above, and many other scientists and organisations, have consistently provided evidence that man-made or anthropogenic emissions of CO2 are much greater than those from volcanic activity by an enormous margin. Reports for 2010 CO2 emissions for example, stated that volcanic emissions were in the range of 0.13 to 0.44 billion metric tonnes per annum, while anthropogenic CO2 emissions were 25 billion tonnes. Even a breakdown of anthropogenic sources tells us the individual sources outstripped that coming from volcanic activity: land use activity including deforestation produced 3.5 billion tonnes, cars and light trucks 2.0 tonnes, and even cement production was 1.5 billion tonnes. This leaves the volcanic output in the shade well and truly. One observation has it that the amount of anthropogenic emissions from less than three days are approximately equal to volcanic emissions typically released in a year. But by default, according to Peter Bowles, this is NON-REAL science from NON-REAL scientists, and therefore providing the way for his ‘REAL science’. Readers can do their own research, make their own comparisons and analysis, and then make their own choices as to what is REAL or NOT REAL. Cliff Schnick Glass House Mountains

Questions answered

Peter Bowles (GC&M News March 9) asks six questions. More precisely, he copies questions posed by Gregg Thompson five years ago and since, echoed by other sceptics. Here are the answers: 1. The air is 0.0404% CO2 this month. Peter thinks that because it is a small number, it must be unimportant. This is nonsense. If I put 0.0404% strychnine in his beer he would learn differently. 2. Virtually all writers would express it as 404 ppm because it is easier to write and remember. 3. What percentage of the CO2 is man-made? The Pre-industrial level was around 280 ppm, so 124 ppm or 30% is ours. 4. What percentage of man-made CO2 does Australia produce? Wikipedia puts Australia at 409 megatonnes a year out of a world total of 35,669 mt, or 1.1%. However the table puts Australia at the top of the list on a per capita basis (17.3 tonnes each). And this does not count all the coal we ship out for others to burn. 5. Is CO2 a pollutant? It depends on your definition. If you mean does adding it to the atmosphere pose a threat to public welfare, then yes, it is a pollutant. Ramping up CO2 in our atmosphere is not compatible with the long-term survival of industrial civilisation. 6. Have I seen evidence that CO2 causes a greenhouse effect? Yes. I Googled ‘YouTube greenhouse gas demonstration’ and watched a variety of demonstrations. Peter jeers at greenies for our efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions when volcanoes keep adding it. He misses the point. Volcanoes have always been with us and the pre-industrial CO2 of 280 ppm was a complex balance between sources (volcanoes, bush fires, rotting, breathing etc) and sinks (trees, sedimentation, weathering rocks etc). The question is how do our reduction efforts stack up against our emission? The answer is very poorly. The famous Keeling Curve of CO2 concentration measured at the top of Mauna Loa keeps climbing relentlessly despite 28 years with five IPCC reports, a Kyoto Protocol and several international conferences. Until the curve starts to flatten, we know that politicians are just adding to the hot air. David Lowry Conondale

of Doubt’, ‘How a handful of scientist obscured the truth on issues from tobacco smoke to Global Warming.’ Peter the book is available from the Beerwah library, 355 pages of info. A comment about it from the Huffington Post - Brilliantly reported and written with brutal Clarity. Also you may want to consider looking at the IPCC latest report: http://www.ipcc.ch/ It gives a good idea of what's happening in the world. CO2's proportion in the environment is minimal but its influence on climate is phenomenal. Climate debate

When you tap into the internet for information on this subject you will find it replete with confusion, that is what this whole ‘debate issue’ does. Some say that 97% of climate scientists say that we are in climate change. The detractors undermine these figures using allegations of conspiracy theories … seeding doubt and uncertainty. So who is right who is wrong? I am a great believer in the old adage ‘There is no smoke without fire’. The one fact that proves to me we are pouring massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere is written below. It is incontrovertible proof that we are polluting our atmosphere. Accurate facts: A Boeing 747 will fly for 6.94 hours non-stop and produce 220 US tons (199,980 kilo’s) of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). There are 5,000 Trans-Atlantic flights every day, (US to Europe both ways). (111,056,000 kilograms a day). That’s 555,280 tons of CO2 per day generated just by these flights. That’s 202,677,200 tons a year from jets travelling the US (US/European routes only). 183.865.662.986 kilo’s a year. You don’t need to be a scientist to see that is a serious amount of pollution and from planes dumping it straight into the atmosphere of the planet, in effect crop dusting us with CO2. The most sobering thought is that in 2014 there were 102,465 flights per day globally. So to say that human beings have no negligible impact on CO2 levels is the biggest load of …

propaganda … I have ever heard. Another old adage (never defecate on your own doorstep). So if it looks like the truth, sounds like the truth then maybe 97% (whatever the real number is) of climate scientists could just be right and telling the truth. You be the judge. Bob Waldock Glass House Mountains Editor’s note Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the discussion on climate change over the last couple of months. I believe it is time to end the debate in Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, it has been really interesting to see the different views.

Support for Ubobo

Ubobo State School sent me a letter of thanks prior to Christmas but was misplaced. I am writing to advise that they received approximately $9,000 from as far north as cairns and as far south as Melbourne. They placed an order for reading books, many art and craft supplies, a number of modern musical instruments, a wide range of sporting equipment and modern electronic teaching and learning aids. I am sure that if Woolworths has the earn and learn stickers program again in 2016, Ubobo State School, Cedarvale Road, Ubobo, QLD 4680 would appreciate our support once again. Sandra Beerwah

Debtor statement

I was visiting a friend the other day, on my arrival she was quite upset, having received a letter from the Beerwah State high School and it went like this. Debtor Statement 3 Mar 2016. 19376 - 2016SRS $250.00 21795 2016ART09 $35.00 $15.00 21848 2016JCS09 21921 2016FPT09 $60.00 22021 2016MFT09 $40.00 Balance Summary 31-60 - $400.00 Nothing was itemised to say what payment is for, or why. So much for free public schooling, what happened to the government funding? I would not accept such a statement should I have been a recipient and secondly, I would like to know the difference in costs between a public school and a private school? My friend approached the school and stated she would or could only afford the sum of $50.00 weekly in order to pay off the debt. That in itself was not received very well by the person accepting the offer of payment. I am not aware of other people within the community suffering the same problem. However, I would expect a clear and concise explanation from the school and a reason as to why such a letter was or is drafted to parents, without itemisation for outstanding debt? Enjoy the journey

We would like to thank the occupants of a property on Old Gympie Road, towards Landsborough, for bringing a smile to our faces each time we pass their property. The occupants place models of animals at random on their front lawn. Many months ago there was a Scotty dog and an Old English Sheepdog, and since then the menagerie has grown to other dogs, cats, a crocodile, a flamingo and others. Each time we pass, the animals are in a different spot. Sometimes behind trees, playing hide and seek, and other times together under a tree having a chat or spread out when they ‘need their space’! Where are they going to be next, we ask ourselves as we approach the property! It's fun and we love it. Thank you again to the occupants, for making our journey along the Old Gympie Road enjoyable. with Braxton Turnage Adjust to Life Chiropractic As people go through their middle years, their proportion of fat to body weight tends to increase. At one time, we might have accepted these changes as an inevitable fact of aging. But we’ve now been put on notice, that as our waistlines grow, so do our health risks. Abdominal, or visceral fat is of particular concern because it’s a key player in a variety of health problems. Visceral fat has been linked to metabolic disturbances and increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In women, it is also associated with breast cancer and the need for gallbladder surgery. The good news is that visceral fat yields fairly easily to exercise and diet, with benefits ranging from lower blood pressure to more favourable cholesterol levels. Research suggests that fat cells — particularly abdominal fat cells — are biologically active. It’s appropriate to think of fat as an endocrine organ or gland, producing hormones and other substances that can profoundly affect our health. Although scientists are still deciphering the roles of individual hormones, it’s becoming clear that excess body fat, especially abdominal fat, disrupts the normal balance and functioning of these hormones. Exercise and dieting can help you get rid of belly fat So what can we do about tubby tummies? A lot, it turns out. The starting point for bringing weight under control and combating abdominal fat is regular moderate-intensity physical activity — at least 30-60 minutes per day, 4-5 x per week. Strength training (exercising with weights) may also help fight abdominal fat. Spot exercising, such as doing sit-ups, can tighten abdominal muscles, but it won’t get at visceral fat. Diet is also important. Pay attention to portion size, and emphasise complex carbohydrates (fruits and vegetables) and lean protein over simple carbohydrates such as white bread, refined-grain pasta, and sugary drinks. Until the magic pill that will fix all of our health problems is developed (never!), experts agree that lifestyle, especially exercise, is the very best way to fight visceral fat and maintain good health. 6, 21 Peachester Road, Beerwah Ph: 5494 0499 www.adjusttolife.com.au The Arthritis Queensland Sunshine Coast Support Group presenter, Emma Plasier, a Shine Retirement specialist, will advise on downsizing to buy/rent a unit, house, or retirement village. Journeys – Una Robinson

The theme for this collection of pastel works by Una Robinson – Journeys – draws from memories and photographs collected by Una during her many travels within Australia and overseas. As Una says, she identifies with nature as a subject for her art. "I can feel it and I try to reflect my feelings and connection into my pastel work. I have painted animals, the visiting possum, our fluffy cat, my son’s puss that’s now in heaven, his rooster, his Siberian husky dog, my night flowering cactus etc, all things I connect with," she said. "I also identify deeply with the remote scenery of the outback. I use my own or family contributed photographs as my guide, so my work is always 100% original. "Having spent some 18+ years in Central Australia plus near 10 in the Darwin region, I have a million memories and pictures to access. I love the sunsets, the gums, the desert oaks, the blue ranges, the blue skies, the vibrant reds and ochres of the mystical red Centre, it’s all quite spiritual to me," said Una. The focus of this exhibition is journeys. By the artist expressing her passions at various points in time through her paintings of scenery, nature, flora, and people, it is hoped that the emotions and depth of the love of nature, and all that mother-nature and the artist offers, may also be experienced deeply by the viewer. Una lived in the Northern Territory for some 30 years, with 20 of those years in Central Australia. In that time many different journeys were undertaken for remote work or for recreation. Then later flying as a remote areas NT air hostess, Una saw mother nature’s creations from above, in the often turbulent desert skies. Journeys will hang at Vianta - 70 Simpson Street Beerwah, from April 3 to May 1. The exhibition will open at 6.00pm on Friday, April 8 - please feel very welcome to attend and enjoy Una sharing the recollections of her physical and emotional journeys. Light refreshments will be served at the opening, and Vianta will be taking orders for a la carte meals from 7.00pm. Call Steve at 0412 312 399 to book your table. To enquire about hanging an exhibition at Vianta contact Michele on 0412 936 361 or reddoorart@bigpond.com.

Why not take a gallery tour, like the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed did recently? It’s never too late to discover your artistic side, and a gallery tour could be just the right way to start. Whether you’re a budding artist, have an appreciation for art, or just want to learn more about art, gallery tours could provide you with a level of insight into the exhibitions that you may not otherwise get. Caloundra Regional Gallery regularly hosts group tours during exhibitions, which are free and guided by gallery staff and/or trained volunteers. Community Services Director Coralie Nichols said the gallery tours were a great way to expand artistic knowledge and understanding. “By attending an organised gallery tour, you really can gain a much deeper understanding of the story behind the individual artworks, the artists and the collectors themselves,” she said. “I encourage any group with an interest in art to contact the gallery and discuss the options for a tour.” The Glasshouse Community Men’s Shed Art Group recently took up the offer and is now discussing how they can hold an exhibition of their own. The Art Group was established in January by coordinator Bob Carruthers and member Gerry Luhman, a retired industrial designer, and design and drawing teacher.

Glasshouse Community Men’s Shed Art Group members Bob Carruthers, Mick O’Brien, Bob Kissell, Klaus Schiemann and Jim Harvey Mr Carruthers said the group drew inspiration from each other. “All of us are retired and previously, whether due to work or family commitments, we didn’t have the opportunity to discover or explore our artistic potential,” he said. “We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Caloundra Regional Gallery because it gave us the chance to broaden our individual art learnings and we’re planning to come back regularly. “We learnt a heck of a lot, and we might even have an exhibition of our own in future,” he said. If you would like to arrange a free group tour, contact the gallery for more information. Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed Art Group meets Friday morning, 8.30am – 12.30pm, at 152 Peachester Road Beerwah, in the Country Care Complex. Visitors are welcome.

HOME My friend Gabby recently renovated much of their home, and I have to say that more than anything, the discussion and planning seemed to revolve around the kitchen! Which isn’t surprising as the trend these days is that the kitchen is really returning to be the centre of the home once again.

• Custom kitchens & bathrooms • Cut to size service • Full job management • Full internal home & unit renovations Online www.qkb.net.au • Cooking Appliances • Bathroom & kitchen supplies

With many couples far more interested in cooking ‘Master Chef' or ‘My Kitchen Rules’ style there is plenty more to consider these days about what will make your perfect kitchen. Having completed the renovation I asked Gabby what her advice would be for someone about to undertake a new kitchen renovation and she reckons that after looking at thousands of home magazines, she realised that she had a very clear idea of ‘the look’ or ‘aesthetic’ but very little idea about the functionality she wanted. Gabby said she knew that doing up the kitchen was going to be a significant investment so we were as thorough as possible when doing our planning to make the space as useable as possible and we are so pleased with it. “The things that I love most about the final design are the drawers, I love having drawers instead of cupboards, and it is so much easier to access all sizes of plates, bowls and platters," she said. “We went a little crazy with power points but it's great not having power boards with cords all over the place. “We included pendant lights which are so popular in kitchens these days, and fortunately the electrician advised us that it is better to install them in front of the food preparation area, rather than behind, as this will cast shadows over your workspace. While breakfast bars with an overhang for stools are very popular, we had enough space to be able to include an old pine kitchen table, which we really enjoy being able to sit at for a casual meal or a cuppa. “I reckon what is most important is that you spend time thinking and planning before you rush into the design, as the time spent will be worth it in the end.

Use the equity in your home to renovate Our TV’s are flooded with renovation shows and great ideas and tips on how to best renovate either on a budget or to impress. It is rare that we find exactly what we are looking for when buying an existing home so why waste time trying to find the perfect home, renovate what you have. There is no need to uproot your family when with a little imagination you can create the perfect spot for your family to live and play. Using the equity in your home may be the cheapest way to obtain funds to renovate. Equity is the difference between the value of your home and the balance of your home loan. In the banking world we call it LVR (loan to value ratio). Lenders have a maximum LVR limit. At the credit union it is 80% and while you can go over 80% you would be required to pay lender’s mortgage insurance (LMI) which can be expensive so always strive to keep your LVR 80% or below. Here’s an example on how LVR works. Your home is valued at $450,000 and you still owe $300,000

$450,000 - $300,000 = $150,000 equity $300,000 ÷ $450,000 x 100 = 66% loan to value ratio (LVR) On this scenario you could increase your loan by $60,000 to help with renovations and staying at 80% LVR. You need to ensure that renovations won’t cost you more than what they’re worth to the value of your home. Knowing how much you should spend is all about research so don’t skip over it because it can make all the difference when you finally move on. Use your local real estate agent to help you estimate the value of your home and research the market to find out what similar homes in your area are selling for. This will give you some idea on how much you should spend. At Maleny Credit Union we are experienced home loan lenders and we would appreciate you giving us a go. For a chat about your current circumstances give myself or Sandra a call. We would love the opportunity to help … we can even come to you! Nicole Hilton Business Development Officer

Lou comes from an insurance management background with over 17 years’ experience, and has been in the real estate industry for the last six years. The original decision to move into property management had been driven by almost daily enquiries about rental availability and will compliment the core business of property sales – offering clients a more comprehensive service. Lou is now on board full-time to balance continuingly increasing the rentals available, as well as boosting their for sale property portfolio. The team are proud to offer buyers and sellers alike a fast, professional turn around service.

Sally Brunner

Their strong work ethic, commitment to client service and compassion, create a sense of confidence in both buyers and sellers. If you are thinking of selling or renting your property in the area then Leanne Leighton list with your local team today and enjoy no upfront fees. Please contact Mooloolah Valley Real Estate on 5494 7494, Lou on 0401 446 578 or Sally on 0403 162 263. For more details see their website, www. mooloolahvalleyrealestate.com.au

Mike Turner - Beerwah High School Chaplain This year marks my 10th year at Beerwah High. Back in 2007 you drove into Beerwah past the pub and over the railway tracks. Woolworths was still quite new and IGA was still on Simpson Street opposite the Co-op. BADYACC was run by a community board rather than an organisation. The Garden Terrace cafe was operating and a community hub for locals. In my first month as chaplain, the then-councillor Anna Grosskreutz took me for a walk around the town introducing me to business owners and locals and helping me settle in. Since then there has been some major changes to our region, particularly in Beerwah. The significant change, I think, has been the increase in our population with a number of new housing estates opening up in many of the towns in Glasshouse Country. Other changes include new businesses opening up and the change in the look and feel of our town centres. There’s been lots of great changes, but I feel that one aspect that we mustn’t forget is our community spirit. My family and I love this region and that is because of people who make it special. It’s the

people who say g’day to you in the street and remember your name. It is the shopkeepers who have a conversation with their customers and genuinely care. It is the people who work hard at putting on quality community events behind the scenes so that the rest of us can enjoy what they have put together. It’s the people who support kids through sporting clubs. It’s the volunteers who care about their towns, schools, churches and clubs. It’s them who create that awesome community spirit that we know and love. In the bible, Hebrews 10 v 24 says ‘Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.’ The 21st century lifestyle has all the conveniences of ‘instant’ technologies but something that it can’t give us is that human need for being cared for and a member of a community. You are a part of this community.

Well done Luca – Go you Queenslander!

Beerwah Ladies Golf

Contributed by Carolyn Gamble On Thursday, March 17, Saint Patrick’s Day, a small field of 41 ladies played a single stroke event at the picturesque Beerwah Golf Club. The course is in great condition at the moment, testament to the hard working grounds staff and an enthusiastic bunch of volunteers. We, as members, are very fortunate to have such a great facility on our doorstep. A few little leprechauns were spotted lurking around the course. Well done to those who made the effort to embrace Saint Patrick’s Day! The day was kindly sponsored by Libby Gemmell and Felicity Smith and as always we thank them for their generosity. We also said farewell to long time member Margaret Goodger who has decided the long trek down from the Range has become too difficult. We wish her all the very best as she continues her golf at Maleny. Our loss is their gain. Congratulations to new member Michelle Wormwell who played at Pelican Waters during the week and was runner up in Division 3. Division 1(0-27) winner was Teresa Keast with a

great 73 nett, and the runner up was Gail Gundry with 75 nett. Division 2 (28-24) winner was Josie Thistlethwaite with 73 nett and the runner up was Margaret Goodger with 74 nett. The ball rundown went to 80 on a countback and nearest the pin on 2 was Monica Dangerfield, 5 was Marie Goyder, 16 was Gail Gundry and 2nd shot on 18 was won by Cathy Stone. Congratulations to all the winners and well done to everyone for their participation. Next week’s event is Single Par. New members, beginner golfers and visitors are most welcome.

Winners Josie Thistlethwaite, Margaret Goodger, Teresa Keast and Libby Gemmell (sponsor)

Brad Stevens and female Jess Ulluica. Referee: the best referee of the year was Jodi Chapman (pictured right) for fair and consistent refereeing.

B-Grade Runner-ups Showbags

Contributed by David Hayes Last Wednesday morning there were two games of social pairs and one game of triples played. In the pair games, Viv James and Marilyn Boulton def Nina Connor and Joy Reason 22 -18. Noelle Dean and Mike Kernick def Russell Walmsley and Di Hume 20-13, while in the triples Marilyn Podmore, Jenny Hobson and Doug Sweedman def Peter Connor, Lyn Griffiths and John McSwain 24-14. In the 2nd round of the ladies ‘a’ singles, Jan Lawson def Chris Freshwater 25-20 - great game ladies, and well done to Jan on her win. On Thursday afternoon in the open pairs, the winners of the day were Warren Blackburne and Vic Muscat with two wins + 15. The runners up with the highest winning margin were Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson with a +20 in their second game. Our bowlers enjoyed a rare Saturday off after a busy couple months of bowling. The Men’s pairs nominations are now closed and the draw is up in the shed office with 13 teams ready to fight it out for victory. Nominations for mens 'a' singles are now open. Sunday saw bowls coaching with 15 people turning up for a fun morning of bowls. Both the kids and adults seem to be enjoying themselves. Thanks to all of those that help out on this day and special thanks to our club coaches Jim Tatum, Warren Blackburne and Rae Farrell for generously giving up their time each week. There will be no coaching on Easter Sunday but we will back at 10.30am the following Sunday. All welcome. Monthly Open Triples is back Monday, April 18. This day has been revamped with a different game format, cheaper entry fee and more prize money. Get your teams in now. For further information Contact David on 0405 101 448. Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

What an excuse! A middle aged man bought a brand new Holden monaro. He took off down the road, pushed it up to 130 kmph, and was enjoying the wind blowing through his (thinning) hair. "This is great," he thought and accelerated to an even higher speed. But then he looked in his rear-view mirror, and there was a police car behind him, blue lights flashing. "I can get away from him with no problem," thought the man and he floored it some more, and flew down the road at over 210 kmph to escape being stopped. Then he thought, "what the hell am I doing? I'm

too old for this kind of thing," and pulled over to the side of the road, and waited for the police car to catch up with him. The policeman pulled in behind the monaro and walked up to the driver's side. "Sir my shift ends in five minutes and today is Friday the 13th. If you can give me a good reason why you were speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go." The man looked back at the policeman and said, “Last week my wife ran off with a policeman, and I thought you were bringing her back." The policeman said, "have a nice day."
