Hi Everyone Well this week I would like to talk about the brave move forward that GCNews has made into the world of social media. While I like to think of myself as some, hip and groovy young thing, I have to admit I feel rather self conscious using the term ‘social media’ and GCNews in the same sentence. However all this really translates into is that GCNews now has a Facebook page www.facebook. com/glasshousecountrynews so instead of having to sit down and put pen to paper to send us your well crafted letter to give us some feedback – now all you have to do is click on our facebook page and knock out a short sentence to share your comment with us and all our Facebook friends. What we are really looking forward to is being able to put up more of

the great photos that we take. Often we go to an event and take a heap of excellent photos but can’t end up fitting them in the paper. This is one way that we will be able to still share them with you all (well that is if you become a Facebook friend that is) ... all you have to do is go to our page and hit 'like'. When the call went out recently for community minded people from across all sections to attend a Building Beerwah Workshop, a Sunshine Coast Community Cooperative Project, the response was “fantastic” according to Holly Aston, Community Development Officer for Hinterland Community Development Association. “Forty-seven people booked into the workshop,” Holly said, “so there was a really good crosssection of the community.” As a result of the workshop a new group has been formed, the Glasshouse Country Community Cooperative. “It’s not about a legal entity ‘cooperative’, but it is about the people in the community cooperating. "The purpose now for the group is to meet monthly and progress some of the things that came out of the workshop,” said Holly.

This will include creating cohesion in the community on issues such as sharing community information, youth and activities and support for young people, volunteers and recognising volunteers, safe walking and riding spaces, utilising community resources, addressing social isolation and more. Landsborough inventor, Allan Lear, has embarked on one of his toughest expeditions yet where he plans a Guinness World Record attempt to travel the longest distance on an electric bicycle in one week.

Allan is aiming to ride a challenging 1,600 kilometre distance, peddling between the Sunshine Coast and Birdsville in far western Queensland. He will travel via a specially designed electric powered all terrain bicycle. The bicycle’s spare batteries will be housed inside a support vehicle – a specially built wind generator mini which will generate energy to power the batteries on route by wind turbines mounted on its roof. The mini will also be powered by renewable fuel – a pure ethanol fuel produced by Hahn Environmental Services from food waste collected from local businesses. The team anticipate an average of 250-300 km per day will be achieved. The journey should take between five and seven days, and the team are scheduled to arrive in Birdsville by September 1, just in time for the Birdsville races.

A new life By Jan Gresham Terry Heilig from Beerwah and Jim Eaton from Toorbul have been involved in using, servicing and restoring old equipment and tractors most of their lives. Now well into their senior years they still get a tremendous thrill taking an old item that has seen better days and, with lots of hours of patient work, bring it back to life. This is what Terry did with the water boring plant that features on our front cover. Originally built by Queensland Pastoral Supplies in 1953 it was intended for farm use, and is capable of boring to 120 feet. Terry acquired it from Cabarlah near Toowoomba, rebuilt the frame and replaced the old, worn out power plant with a 1942 IHC engine. Both Terry and Jim have been involved for over 20 years with the Beerwah Charity Sports Carnival when a display of vintage engines and vehicles was introduced, this has now grown to become such a popular feature of the day. Jim and Terry also help to organise the ‘Tractor Trek’ where a number of vintage tractors depart from a selected spot and travel together to arrive at the Showground in time for the Grand Parade, a journey that can take four hours or more. All these and more historic cars, motorbikes, engines and tractors will come from all over the Sunshine Coast to participate in this year’s Sports Day next Saturday. It will be marvellous to see them all, knowing the amount of tender loving care given to their restoration.

Charity Sports Day this Saturday The 40th Annual Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival will be held next Saturday, August 27, at the Beerwah Showgrounds starting at 8.30am. All proceeds of the day will go to Cancer Council Queensland.

Headlining the day will be a display of aerial trick riding from the Freestyle Motocross team who are scheduled to appear in the early afternoon. This will be the first time that Beerwah has ever seen such a display. So make sure you don’t miss it. The Ute Muster has been growing enormously over the last few years and this year the indications are that it will be bigger than ever with dozens of utes all dressed up, polished to perfection, and competing for a wide range of prizes including $1,000 towards a set of Allied Wheels or Wheel Boyz alloy wheels to be selected at Beerwah Tyre Services. A large turnout of horses is expected for all classes of horse events and the dog ute-jumping competition is on again; with novelty athletics, face painting, and a pet parade amongst the many activities for children. All the usual stalls will be there including luscious home-made cakes, jams and chutneys with fresh local produce also available, and in particular, the strawberry pavlovas are always eagerly snapped up. You won’t go hungry as there will be a barbecue lunch and dinner, sandwiches, tea and coffee, cold drinks etc. all available. Local Glass House Mountains resident, Ethel Burgess, who has been attending the church since it opened over 10 years ago, said she’s happy for the bikers to ride through it. “I’m pleased to see them,” she said. You understand why when you discover that it’s all for a good cause. It’s that time of year again for the annual Ride for Chappy which raises much needed funds to support the Beerwah State High School Chaplaincy Fund.

“It’s something that’s going to help support the Chaplain and at the same time it brings people into the church. Even if they’re not stopping, it familiarises them with the church,” Ethel said. This year’s Ride for Chappy is on Saturday, August 27. The starting point is Beerwah State High School at 8.00am leaving at 9.30am. Sponsor Westpac is supplying breakfast. A different route is travelled each year and this year the ride will proceed to Kenilworth before heading to the Uniting Church. Mike Turner, Beerwah High’s Chaplain said a wide range of different people and bikes take part. “Everything from dirt bikes, tourers, Harleys, and British bikes. We had a big scooter one year, and an 82 - year-old lady who rode, that was pretty cool,” he said. This year, local posties were hoping to participate but unfortunately their top speed of 60km meant they would have been a bit behind the pace. Mike said there are many great reasons people join the ride. “For the riders a big part would be riding as part of a big group, that’s always an experience. The other part is riding into the church, and just the chat around morning tea and lunch, people enjoy that,” he said. If you would like to support Beerwah State High’s Chaplain it costs just $15.00 to participate. Just turn up on the day to register. Morning tea and lunch will be available for a small cost. Mooloolah families take on power saving challenge Seven-year-old Dallas Muller from Mooloolah is doing all he can to save power in his house as part of the Power Saving Challenge. Initiated by the Mooloolah Sustainable Living Group, this challenge aims to raise awareness of ways to save power and encourages families to make changes in their households to reduce their ecological footprint. Dallas likes his job of keeping the warmth in, so his family don’t have to turn on the heater and can save money on power bills. “Even little kids can do a lot to help the environment,” he said. Dallas is hoping others will also rise to the Mooloolah Power Saving Challenge and have a chance to win a power saving device and other prizes. He will be taking his family along to the Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day, held at 43 Bray Road on Sunday, October 16, to find some more tips on how to win the challenge and save power. “Actually, we’ve been trying out the huge Sustainability Outdoor Game we’ve made up and I can’t wait to play it with the kids at the Family Fun Day. It will be great fun!” Dallas said.

Sunny’s Kitchen Mooloolah Falcon’s Under 16/17’s soccer team In 2010 when the Mooloolah Falcon’s Under 16/17’s soccer team faced the prospect of a split team because of the age differences of their players, they showed true team spirit and loyalty by staying together they only way they could, by joining the Senior Men’s competition. With a few dads and a couple of other new players coming on board in 2011, the Mooloolah United team was created. The new squad of 16 includes 10 from the original Falcon’s to participate in the Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association competition. Usually new teams play Division 2 but this year the boys have found themselves playing against Division 1 teams. In a remarkable performance the team has only lost two matches, has won five and drawn five. They made it into the top eight and played an elimination final last Friday. It’s possible they could even make it all the way to the Plate Final. The team’s Coach (and player) Simon Smith said, “that’s an absolutely fantastic result. For a team to come through and do that in their first year with so many junior players is quite outstanding.”

Inspiring the team to continue do well is their recent outstanding performance against the Churches Under 18 Queensland Rep team at Mooloolah on August 16. “This was a great honour for them to be asked by the Rep team to play a match against them. It highlights how well they’ve done this year,” said Simon. Mooloolah United fought hard and it was a close result with the Qld Rep team just getting over the line 1-0. “It’s a very good result. My understanding is that it is the toughest game they (Qld Rep) had, and they’ve beaten other teams they’ve played quite handsomely,” said Simon. “I thought it was just a brilliant evening. It was great for the local community to see some classy Qld soccer players play. It was a really nice evening, with a lot of supporters.” Simon said the team’s strong bond is a major reason for their success. “Definitely through their team spirit and their commitment to play together and for each other,” he said.

Last Thursday night there were a number of break-ins to businesses in Beerwah and Glass House Mountains which is both frustrating and costly for hard working local business owners. One of the thieves ended up with something they hadn’t planned on though – an injury, with a severe cut from broken glass. Manager of Total Microsystems, at Beerwah Daniel Moodie said fortunately they had security footage of the incident and they have some good images of the offenders which will hopefully assist the police in their investigation. “We will be installing bars into the shop windows to act as an additional deterrent for other potential burglars, it is sad that it has come to

Australia Zoo head of native mammals Tammy Forge said it’s exciting to finally meet the youngsters, whose arrival marks the most successful Tasmanian devil breeding season ever at Australia Zoo. “As they’re marsupials, the joeys have spent the past five months in their mothers’ pouches,” Tammy said. Wild Tasmanian devils suffer from what is known as the Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), an infectious cancer that can now be found across 70 per cent of Tasmania. This disease is killing Tasmanian devils in the wild at an alarming rate. DFTD is unique, being only one of three cancers that can spread like a contagious disease. “Every joey is hugely important to keep the Tasmanian devil insurance population on the increase, as well as to introduce new genetics into the pool.”

The Landsborough State School held a fund raiser for the school Head of Curriculum, Kristy Corbett, who is battling a rare form of cancer. Kristy has follicular non Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is raising money so she can go to the US for life saving treatment. Teachers and students who came dressed in Kristy’s favourite colours pink and purple donated a gold coin. We raised $504.00. Kristy said, “the generosity of the students we have at Landsborough are special.”

Cupcakes or cheesecake? In this day and age, it seems teenagers are spoilt for choice. Once upon a time, as we are so often reminded by our parents, you went to school, chose a career and stuck with this chosen career path for the rest of your working days. But in today’s society, this concept is viewed as almost bizarre. Why spend forever slaving out the hours as a brickie when you could be dancing for the New York City Ballet? While the endless opportunities seem incredibly exciting when flicking through the QTAC Guide, the final decision on what to study is almost like choosing between cupcakes or cheesecake – virtually impossible. The decision is hard enough without the added pressures of your school, your parents and your friends all asking the dreading question – ‘what are your plans for next year?’ The decision making process alone makes me want to hide away with an endless tub of caramel icecream and my ‘Friends’ series box set. Though however tempting it may seem to hide, it doesn’t solve anything. Recently I have come to realise that it is 100 per cent okay to have no clue where I’ll be or what I’ll be doing in 10 years time. No one can make up my mind for me, and no one can pressure me into studying something I know I won’t enjoy – aerospace avionics anyone?

At the end of the day, the final decision is up to me. And if I make a wrong turn then hey, it’s not the end of the world, it’s all part of the journey. Glass half-full or half-empty? It’s your choice.

Vintage treat for Peachester State School The students of Peachester State School recently had the honour of catering a morning tea for members of the Dodge Brothers Tweeny Car Club, who were passing through in their fabulous vintage vehicles. What a fantastic sight it was seeing these classics parked outside our little school. The vehicles were produced by the Dodge and Graham Brothers, and built from 1914 to 1938. A great morning was shared by our volunteers and the motoring enthusiasts that attended. Our visitors enjoyed strolling the school grounds and seeing first-hand what a terrific environment we offer our students and teachers here at Peachester.

The children at Landsborough Child Care Centre enjoyed a visit from Senior Constable Natasha and Constable Matt last Wednesday. They talked to the children about crossing the road safely, the importance of knowing our full name and address in case the children get lost and wearing seat belts in the car. The children got to wear the police hat and vest, have their fingerprints taken and got to explore the inside of the police car. Some of the children even got to talk on the loud speaker. They also received some balloons, stickers and colouring in’s! The flashing lights were great and the police siren was very, very noisy! Lots of fun was had by all!

Yes, the students are still the same Aileen Strudwick, 91, the first convenor of the Caboolture High School’s Tuckshop visited the present Tuckshop and had a chat with the one of the current convenors, past student Lina Bishop (Barro). The tuckshop has certainly changed from when Aileen started it in 1961, on tables under A Block, but students are still students and ever eager for morning tea and lunch. News presenter and past student, Andrew Lofthouse has written in his article in the Caboolture High’s 50th anniversary book: ‘I don’t know how the tuckshop menu has changed in the last 30 years but maybe one day I can drop by again for a mince burger and a jam split under the covered way’. The mince burgers were sold at the original tuckshop with Mrs Strudwick cooking the mince at home to her secret recipe. Jam splits came from the bakery owned by the Nipperess family and butter for the sandwiches came directly from the butter factory. Lina took the opportunity of Aileen’s visit to check out the recipe for those mince burgers. Though the past students may have aged, the mince burgers will taste as they always did. Mince burgers and jam splits are not on the menu now, but on Saturday, October 29, when

Tibrogargan Rescue Last Friday night, members of the SES and several ambulance crews attended an accident on Mount Tibrogargan. A young Brisbane couple, in their early to mid-20’s, had nearly finished their descent, when the male fell approximately 10-15 metres. This occurred at about 5.45pm. His face was injured and there was believed to be a wrist fracture. He was extremely fortunate to not receive further injuries. He was carried out by stretcher, and taken to Nambour Hospital at about 11.00pm. We thank Tim, Roger, Dave, Ashley and Louise from SES who assisted in this rescue.

Roys Road upgrade Roys Road in Beerwah will be upgraded by Sunshine Coast Council at a cost of $650,000 as part of the sealed road program. Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the project to widen Roys Road and resolve problems entering and exiting Moroney Place, will make the intersection a much safer place. The first stage will involve widening Roys Road to the east, adjacent to Steve Irwin Way, for approximately 440 metres towards Burys Road. This stage also includes improving the levels at the intersection of Moroney Place. This will alleviate the adverse dip that exists and leads to some vehicles scraping against the road surface. The work will include widening of the pavement, resurfacing of the road, new kerb and channel near Moroney Place. The project is programmed to start the week commencing August 22, and completion is anticipated to take approximately twelve weeks (weather permitting).

Who knows anything about camels? Well, Lauren Brisbane does and in an articulate lecture she enthralled the View Club with her knowledge. Lauren lives in Glasshouse and has spent the past four and a half years of her life involved with camels. We learnt that the Afgan workers introduced camels to Australia in the 1840s. Initially there were around 20,000 although their numbers today are closer to 100,000. Camels are one of the oldest pastoral animals in the world; they produce meat which is high in omega 3 and very low in cholesterol. Their milk contains half the fat of cow’s milk and is being used medicinally for children with autism. In addition, their urine

is good for bald people and the bigger the hump they have the healthier the animal. The next View Club outing will be held on September 7 when we will visit Sunstone Gardens Over 50’s Resort in Maleny for barefoot bowls and a sausage sizzle. Caloundra Family History Research Contributed by Roz Kuss The group held its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, August 18, and a new Committee was welcomed for the forthcoming year. Outgoing President, Jocelyn Morgan thanked our Patron, State Member for Caloundra Mr Mark McArdle, as well as his wife Judy, and gave them a small token of their considerable and valued support during the past year. She also acknowledged the significant contribution by numerous members to the successful operation of the group, and presented Loyalty Awards to Pam Scanlan, Betty Dozzi and Graeme Sloan, in recognition of their 10 years of membership. Jocelyn herself also received a gift, in acknowledgement of her retirement as President, after three years in the position. The inaugural ‘Lorrie Barzdo Writers Award’ was presented by Lorrie’s husband, Mr Richard Barzdo, to Geoff Kelly, a worthy winner, for his article 'The Elusive William Kelly'. The judging panel had a difficult task in choosing a winner from the 20 entries, all of an extremely high quality. This annual award, a legacy of the group’s friend and mentor, was made possible by

Lorrie’s generosity, prior to her untimely passing early this year. It encourages members to write an article for posterity, in keeping with their family history research and findings. The group’s rooms and library are open for research every Saturday and the third Thursday of the month, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Every other Thursday of the month the rooms are open for the full day, from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Specialist interest groups meet for a couple of hours each month at the following times... Scotland first Saturday at 10.00am, Germany first Thursday at 1.00pm, Ireland third Thursday at 11.00am and England and Wales fourth Thursday at 1.00pm. All activities conducted by the group, including general meetings with guest speakers (1.30pm to 4.00pm on the third Thursday each month) are held at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra. At our recent meeting we discussed the possibility of sponsoring a speaker to talk to us about e-books. With the cooperation of Beerwah Library, we may be able to arrange it later this year. In our 'work-reading' session Bob told of a character in Esk; Kate continued her theatre story and Joan told us of road-trains at Shaw River. Barbara’s fantasy tale included pentagrams and mystery; Betty related the story of a family and Martin persuaded a palm tree to tell us about a notable event. Trevor’s Tasmanian miners prospected for gold but found only copper; Eric’s private investigator sought the reasons for crime and Steve’s fantasy tale of a condemned man held everyone’s attention. Sue continued her story of a frightened young woman and the intentions of her attacker and Anneke presented her unusual, captivating poetry. We continue to provide opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback. Meetings take place at Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Next meeting is on Friday, August 26. Whether you are a writer, or just interested in writing, you will find a friendly welcome in this group whose members range from beginners to accomplished, published authors. Beerwah Branch is the most southern branch within the Nambour North Coast Division of CWA in Qld. This Division has been operating for 65 years. Next year the Association of QCWA will celebrate 90 years of service to communities. Of interest from the report submitted at the recent Division Annual meeting showed this area had raised $13,925.00 and donated to the Rural Flood Crisis and administrated though QCWA. Another $15,435.00 donations were made to various services including prostate cancer, breast cancer research and Royal Flying Doctor Service. Then International donations totalled $3035.00 which included Water for All, Pennies for Friendship, the Fistula Hospital and an amount to help East Timor delegates to attend the South Pacific Regional Conference in Tonga. Goods in kind have been donated such as 100 bandages and 12 scarves for the Leprosy Mission, beanies and baby items, birthing kits assembled and a number of wheelchair bags sewn. That’s not all, as a large number of used stamps and overseas currency coins were collected and sold with funds going to 3rd world countries. Bli Bli Branch own and administer Mudjimba Court ‘low income units’, keeping them in top order. The Division has two units (permanent) and two units (holiday) for rental at Beach Parade Maroochydore, as well as the Divisional Hall at Coolum. Mr Peter Wellington chaired the well attended meeting. Members and visitors enjoyed hearing the work of the two ladies from Australian Zoo, completing a very interesting morning. On July 31, 2011, Boomajarril (Landsborough Girl Guide Brownie Cottage) turned 40. Four decades ago, on July 31, 1971, Boomajarril was officially opened by Mrs Mary Moore the Queensland Girl Guide State Commissioner. Attending the opening was Sir Francis Nicklin, Mike Ahern, Jack Beausang, Father Reg Mills and other boy scout and girl guide leaders. Helping to celebrate the day were the Sunshine Regional Girl Guides. Attending the formal ceremony was the President of Caloundra and Glasshouse RSL’s along with original girl guides and leaders over the past 40 years. These include Dawn Wendt, Barbara Dougan, Kaye Langridge, Jo-Anne Bray, Chris Dougan, Robyn Warn, Don Warn, Desley Hovker, Lyn Pickering and Josie Fry, just to Attendees were plentiful at Boomajarril’s 40th name a few. Photo competition to capture wildflowers Budding Sunshine Coast amateur photographers are encouraged to capture the beauty of local native wildflowers on camera as part of the Sunshine Coast Heathland Photographic Competition. Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with Greening Australia and the Allocasuarina emuina Recovery Team is holding a photo competition to coincide with the release of a DVD about work on A. emuina. Allocasuarina emuina is an endangered species found only on the Sunshine Coast with a habitat range from Peregian to Landsborough. The Allocasuarina emuina Recovery Team is working to implement the National Recovery Plan for the Mt Emu Sheoak, Allocasuarina emuina, and increase awareness of this endangered species and the protection of its critical habitat. Dr Alison Shapcott, from the University of the Sunshine Coast, said photographers were encouraged to visit the Sunshine Coast wildflower reserves to preserve the native plants forever in a photo. “The Sunshine Coast has a wonderful diversity of wildflowers with many rare species and some found nowhere else,” Dr Shapcott said. “The photo competition is being run in conjunction to the Sunshine Coast Spring Wildflower Festival to provide an opportunity for local amateur photographers to demonstrate their skills. “The peak wildflower flowering times of late August to late September are the perfect time to take photos of the Coast’s native plants. “So get out there and get snap happy!”

Apex Club ‘steps up’ to help Landsborough kids Thanks to donation of $1,200 from the Apex Club of Maleny, 40 disadvantaged Landsborough and Maleny children will be going to school with warm and dry feet. The funds were donated to the Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation’s (BF4KF) Shoes & Socks 4 Kids program which provides free leather BATA shoes and Underworks socks to disadvantaged

children. These children in need go to school with no shoes or worn out shoes with holes, or that are held together with staples or tape. “The Apex Club of Maleny came to our rescue – we were struggling to raise the funds we needed to provide shoes and socks for children in need in the Maleny / Landsborough area,” Pauline Preston, BF4KF Managing Director said. “Importantly this amazing donation means that no child has to miss out and schools no longer have to face the heart breaking decision of choosing which child in need gets shoes and which doesn’t.” For more information or to send a donation, go the charities website: www.brighterfuture4kids.org.au

Toy Story 3 still a family favourite Recently the Mooloolah State School Chaplaincy Committee held a fun-filled ‘Movie Night’ fundraiser. It was a chance to dress up, watch an old time favourite, eat popcorn and sausages and drink slushies and fizzy drink. The night was a huge success raising much needed funds for the Chaplaincy Committee, supporting their chaplain, Dave Larkin and just as importantly, helping to bring families and community together in the school hall which was filled with characters from the Pixar favourite. There is a very strong focus on relationships this month. As September starts, we are at the beginning of the New Moon cycle in Virgo with Venus part of the line-up, beginning a new cycle in the way we relate to others, both lovers and friends. The theme of the Equinox is always about balance – it’s the time of year when day and night are of equal length and the seasons come to a point of balance. The Equinox is marked by the Sun moving into the zodiac sign of Libra, the sign associated with harmony, balance and fairness. This is a perfect time to explore what might be out of balance in your own life and find a way to restore that balance, whether it’s in your relationships, your work, or any other aspect of your life. Out and About Shane Webcke hits Simpson Street Last Friday some of the local Junior Bulldogs players, along with community members, were treated to a sausage sizzle and the opportunity to meet rugby league legend Shane Webcke in Simpson Street, outside the First National Beerwah office. The event was organised by Luke Mooney to celebrate the opening of the new Sunshine Coast office of Homeloans. Word on the street is that it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just the Bulldogs players who were impressed with the opportunity to meet Webcke, there were quite a few local ladies who lined up to have their photo taken with him as well. Weaving together the members of a community Sunshine Coast fibre artist Rene Bahloo has conceived a unique way for people to connect with the natural environment and with each other. She teaches weaving, an art form that has for centuries, brought communities together. Rene’s Weavery workshops give participants an opportunity to learn the ancient tradition of basket weaving practised by Indigenous women, who were connected in community, sitting together, caring, sharing, creating and combining purpose with pleasure. “Modern western culture has lost sight of this community focus and people rarely gather as a group to create things together,” Rene said. “In consequence, it is easy to feel isolated, uninspired and lacking in support.” Rene’s passion for weaving stems from her life-altering experience of Australian Indigenous culture in Arnhem Land, where she first came into contact with the magic of weaving baskets. She now weaves basketry, art, life and healing into her business concept of Weavery to promote wellbeing and a sense of belonging in individuals, families and groups. ‘Derailed’ - Two over 70 year olds left stranded

On August 12, following attending an evening Business Meeting in Brisbane we caught the Queensland Rail 9.30pm Roma Street to Nambour train service to Glass House Mountains - ETA was 10.43pm. Passengers were queried along the way as to what their destinations were and at Caboolture, were herded to the three front carriages by two security people (they said for safety reasons) and we were now seated in the second carriage. Before the train stopped at Glass House Mountains Station we went to access the nearest exit door to find this was unserviceable and then ran to the next door at the end of the carriage, pressed the door opening signal buttons which lit up but the train was slowly moving, we now rather doubt if it actually even stopped. Our vehicle was parked at Glass House Mountains Station and we had to detrain at Beerwah where all Nambour to city trains had already been and gone for the day, so we were basically stranded at night with no service back to Glass House Station and to our vehicle to get home. Two people were detraining at Beerwah Station, one was a lady from Caloundra, who very kindly offered to drive us to Glass House Mountains Station and we were most grateful for her help. They said the security people told them the train had to pick up extra time; it seems that we as passengers didn’t matter. There was no announcement made on nearing Glass House Station as to which side the platform was on either. We had alighted this carriage from the left side as the train travels at Caboolture, on this occasion at Glass House Mountains; the exit was on the right as the train travels. This train was a different one and appeared to be an old one pulled out of archives possibly due to the extra traffic because of the Ekka; I’d never travelled on one like this before. Another passenger had earlier attempted unsuccessfully to gain access to the toilet, and with an unserviceable exit door in this same carriage one rightfully asks what is QR doing regarding this unsafe service, especially stranding country people at night? Lasting Memorial in Landsborough for Stan Tutt? Following the death of Stan Tutt on July 16, Landsborough Area Community Association Inc. thinks it would be fitting to have a lasting memorial in Landsborough to this wonderful man. Stan was a historian, author, Wildlife Preservation Society advocate, Sunshine Coast Environment Council founding member and OAM recipient, Historical society founding member and a great human being. There is a Stan Tutt reading room at the Landsborough Historical Museum but perhaps a more obvious memorial could be done in honour of his contribution to the many issues he was passionate about. Landsborough would be the appropriate place for such a memorial as Stan and his family lived here for many years and he was involved in so many local organisations. Perhaps re-naming Skippy Park to Stan Tutt Park? Or some other park or landmark? We would welcome any feedback from the community and would then approach Sunshine Coast Council to organise something as a lasting reminder to this remarkable man. Highway widening

Highway woes a long way from being resolved

Support has been strong for my petition calling for the Australian Government to widen the Bruce Highway to six lanes between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast. Anyone wishing to have a copy of the petition in their offices or outlet to collect signatures for this worthy cause can contact my office on 5444 4888. I have spoken in the Australian Parliament on the issue numerous times and also written to the relevant Minister and the Prime Minister about the issue. It is very important that we get upgrades to the highway to ensure it is as efficient and safe as possible and able to meet the demands of our growing population. I’m urging concerned Sunshine Coast residents to make an effort to add their names to the list so we can put pressure on the Government to address this vital need. The closure to traffic crossing the Bruce Highway from Roys Road and Bells Creek Road is a short term decision but it looks like being a long time before there is a final resolution to this problem. After speaking with Main Roads recently it seems that while the closure is in place it’s a shortterm solution that’s going to be in place for a long time. The situation now means resident of Roys Road and Bells Creek can only take a left-hand turn to access the Bruce Highway. It’s too bad if residents on the eastern side of the highway want to head north. They will have to travel some 14 kilometres southbound before they can access the northbound lanes and a similar dilemma faces those on the western side of the highway who want to head south. While the crossing closure will mean a safer highway it also means there will be more traffic on the already congested Bruce, an extension of travelling time for those unfortunate motorists who are affected and an extra cost for their fuel. Main Roads have advised me a planning study has started for a proposed future upgrade of the Bells Creek and Roys Road intersection and this is part of the Federal Government’s commitment to upgrade a suite of interchanges on the highway between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. That doesn’t mean a lot. Government departments – especially Main Roads, conduct many planning studies which may or may not ever see the light of day. Given the pressure the Government is under, the upgrade the whole of the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns, the Bells Creek and Roys Road intersections are likely to rate fairly lowly on the scale of work to be done overall. While the closures have certainly made the highway safer at these points, it will be easy to leave the band-aid in place for much longer than anyone anticipates. Perhaps it will remain like this for ever. There is potential for chaos here if this intersection is not completed before the estimated flood of residents arrive to occupy the proposed Caloundra South development. The State and Federal governments must get together on this one or we will be faced with yet another infrastructure gaffe which will affect thousands of motorists and turn the Bruce Highway into a car park.

I love the way that God made us with an ability to think and make decisions and choices about our life. I mean really, he could have made us like a bunch of robots marching around the place being all efficient and precise, but no, he made us human – prone to making mistakes and being selfish but with free-will nonetheless. Now, something that escapes all of our attention from time to time is the power we have in our decision making. We can choose so many things every day like: what we wear, what to eat, how to get to work or school, who we talk to, what we do in conflict, whether we do our work or watch TV, whether we drink water or stick to coffee... Some choices have fairly minor consequences and others have major effects. But, there is one daily choice that we make (sometimes without realising it) that has massive repercussions for our lives whether that be better or worse. I am talking about our use of time. TIME: Now, the crazy thing about time is each day we get a set allowance – 24 hours, no more, no less. What we do with those hours pretty much shapes our lives. My wife has a great saying which goes like this 'you make time

Two hundred enthusiastic and excited junior school students flooded onto the oval for the annual Glasshouse Country Christian College Prep to Year 3 Athletics’ Carnival. Students were brightly dressed in sporting house colours ready for a morning of fun and fitness. Tents were beautifully decorated and war cries were gustily shouted by the three sporting houses, signalling the beginning of the day’s competitions. Students competed in two sprint races, long jump and tug-of-war events before moving into teams for a variety of tabloid activities. Treasure was found in the Big Dig, chickens were slung, balls were kicked, water was relayed, moon hoppers bounced, tunnels were slithered through and an obstacle course was navigated.

Children were ready for lunch after all this action but were still bubbling with stories of the day. Points were scored for sportsmanship, enthusiasm and team cheering and support. The result was very close at the drinks break, but sporting house Zion pulled away during the second half of the morning and was victorious at the end of the day. The support of parents was fantastic with many leading teams and encouraging students enthusiastically. The tug-of-war was a favourite with the students and they were really excited when they had the opportunity to pull against their parents during one game. GCCC’s P and F provided a fantastic barbeque and helped to create a gala atmosphere and feed hungry children.

Monday, August 15 - the Ladies Pennant Team (teamed with Maleny) had a good day with wins against Maroochy Swan and Nambour Heights. Well done. Tuesday was just a social game with Eddie winning the raffle. Friday 3 Bowl Pairs was won by Eric Wood and Eileen Pierce, 2nd John Esdaile and Darren Black and 3rd Kev Jenner and Rob Hall. Saturday was the final of the Ladies Pairs with Gwen Henderson and Gloria Shaw handling the windy conditions best with a win over Eileen Pierce and Judy Walker. Well done girls. The return match at home on Wednesday resulted in our ladies again defeating Solander Lake 48/30. At this stage our ladies are undefeated in this year’s competition. Last Wednesday’s social games resulted in G Young, R Coxon and R Scullion 20 def P Jurd, D Sutherland and M Viterale 13, and M Dawes, N Dean and D Hume 23 def B DeClara, K White and R White 19. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Lindsay Henderson and Bob Moss with two wins and 46 points. The runners-up were Bede Burton and Jack Timm with the highest score of 24 in game two. Round 6 of the 2011 Men’s Pennant Competition on Saturday resulted in Division 2 going down to Bribie Island (away) 50/65, Division 4 going down to Kilcoy (away) 34/51 and Division 5 defeating Caboolture Lakes (at home) 41/39. Be snake aware

It’s starting to warm up again and snakes will start to be seen more often in and around backyards and bushland. Just the other day I had an encounter with a red-bellied black snake and a 2m long python in my backyard (plus a 20cm long centipede and a feisty blue tongue lizard) when weeding a very overgrown veggie patch. According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, there are over 25 different species of snakes found in the Glasshouse Country area. The most commonly seen snakes are generally the most harmless – carpet python, common tree snake, and yellow-faced whip snake. However, Australia has many of the world’s most venomous snakes and some of them may be found in and around our area, including the eastern brown, red-bellied black and rough scaled snakes. Nowadays, snakes aren’t just bush creatures, they can be found in many suburban backyards as well. Of the dangerous snakes, the eastern brown snake is the most common. Red-bellied black snakes are frog-eaters and have become rarer since the introduction of the poisonous cane toad. Most victims of snakebites are those who have tried to kill or interfere with the animal. So the best advice from the experts is to leave them well alone, and walk the other way. Snakes will move considerable distances in search of food, shelter and a mate. Preventing them entering your yard is almost impossible, so reducing the risk of a snake bite is the best option.

Super Strawberry Round 7 With only one more week to go in the 2011 Super Strawberry Competition, Round 7 attracted some creditable entries, and was won by Paradise Fruits with a strawberry weighing 190 grams. To date there has been no serious challenge to the Round 1 winner Dieter Zellman from Wamuran, whose entry weighed 205 grams. However there is always the possibility that the 2011 champion is still out there, so good luck in the search for the big one this week.

Carpet python To reduce the chances of a snake bite: remove rubbish piles and sheets of tin  providing shelter wear long trousers and protective footwear in  long grass (gum-boots are best) carry a torch outside at night;  wear sturdy leather gloves when gardening in  high risk areas get to know what species of snakes are found  in your area Don’t try and catch them or kill them – just let  them be. If you live in a bushy area, it’s a good idea to be familiar with snakebite first aid, including the proper use of compression bandages – just in case. Snakes are protected fauna under the Nature Conservation Act and cannot be taken from the wild. Keeping a snake requires a licence from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. We live in a naturally blessed area, with an amazing array of native wildlife, and all our reptilian neighbours are just as important as the furry and feathered ones. Entries can be presented at the Coochin Creek Co-op any time during the week, and Round 8 will close on Friday, August 26 at 4.00pm. This is the final round, and the champion entry and grower will be announced at the Charity Sports and Spring Carnival, Saturday, August 27 at the Beerwah Sports Ground. The prize for the overall winner is a dinner for two donated by Beerwah Hotel. with James Ashby Marketing and PR Manager, Gowinta Farms A recent pineapple meeting held by Tropical Pines in Beerwah, saw industry leaders discuss the increasing threat of fresh pineapple imports from Malaysia. It's left growers from the Sunshine Coast to North Queensland concerned, after the Government first flagged the free trade agreement. The threat not only has the potential of major job losses, but Malaysia’s pineapple industry is riddled with 'Ghost Disease'. 'Ghost Disease' is a bacteria that rots the fruit internally, forcing the fruit to ferment, swell and explode (mainly at night). Spores are spread simply by wind and insects, effecting large areas of crop within a short period of time. Worse still, there's no method of eradicating the disease once a crop is affected. Australian growers have rebuilt consumer confidence in the fresh pineapple market with new hybrid varieties. The guarantee to consumers of a sweet, all year round fruit. The gross value in production of Australian pineapples at the farm gate is currently estimated at $79 million ($13 million processed, $66 million fresh) and is steadily increasing at a rate of 10 per cent annually. South East Queensland makes up 50 per cent of Australia's pineapple industry, followed by 40 per cent in Yeppoon and 10 per cent in North Queensland. Australian growers have a committed to increasing plant numbers to cope with the steady improvement to the fresh market varieties, yet Labor's State and Federal Government appear to have no concern for the loss at stake. While pineapples aren't an essential commodity, they make up an integral part of farming in Queensland, and in particular the Sunshine Coast. The question has to be asked who our State and Federal Governments aim to protect - Australian or foreign farmers?
