FROM THE EDITOR

THERE’S increasing concern among some of our most important community groups and organisations as they scramble to find enough volunteers to help fill key positions.

A rapidly changing demographic, increased bureaucracy (including unnecessary overreach as argued in last week’s column), technology, shifting social norms, no fixed retirement... the list goes on.

All of which makes it ever more challenging for groups, that we largely take for granted, to operate.

But this week the Glass House Mountains RSL Sub-Branch is stepping up and calling this out.

They are in a fraught position. Their Secretary and Treasury roles will become vacant in May and unless someone steps up to fill those positions, the reality is it can’t continue to operate.

As Sub-branch president, Brian Machin, who has been in the role for five years and is ready to hand over their reigns says: “It is a real danger.”

“If we can’t find people to fill these positions then we are genuinely worried

FOLLOW US ON OUR SOCIALS

about our long-term capacity to provide any services.” This is from a sub-branch with over 200 service and social members.

While the RSL is getting on the front foot, another excellent initiative that aims to showcase the work of many of the community groups in the hinterland is Maleny’s Mobile Come and Try Day this Thursday, January 26.

Nearly 40 community groups and associations are opening their doors or holding stalls at the showgrounds, Precinct, Pioneer Village and at their own headquarters. It is a great opportunity firstly for groups to promote their activities (and potentially recruit newcomers) and for the public to get a great understanding for what makes this close-knit community tick.

The 4-page liftout in this edition including a map of key events tells you all you need to know. Head along for a great morning in Maleny. Mitch

Prepped for the first day

SCHOOL is back for 2023 with thousands of students across the hinterland packing their bags and tying up their laces ready to return for the schooling year.

Primary schools across the region will this week be welcoming their newest cohort, with hundreds of prep students heading to class for the first time, starting their educational journey.

In recent years, across Queensland, State School enrolments have grown by 3.4 per cent from 2018 to 2022, with the North Coast Region – of which the Sunshine Coast falls within - seeing a

20.4% increase last year. While official 2023 figures won’t be released until later this year, some local schools have seen an increase in student enrolments this year.

Glasshouse Christian College principal Mike Curtis shared that the College’s enrolment numbers across Prep to Year 12 have remained fairly stable over the last few years as they have mostly been at capacity.

“However we have had a marked increase in the number of enrolment enquiries and applications received over the last two years and we are expecting this year to follow this trend,” he said.

Landsborough State School have seen an increase on last year’s student enrolments in both Prep and other year levels and one

of the region’s smallest schools, Conondale State School, has also gained enrolments over the Christmas break.

Currently there are 1262 state schools and 545 independent and catholic schools across Queensland, with figures showing a total of 571,550 students were enrolled in Queensland State Schools in August 2022.

According to Public Strategy and Performance figures, published by the Department of Education, 2022 student attendance rates across Queensland fell 3.3%, however extreme weather events and the pandemic may have contributed to a drop in these figures. While official enrolment statistics across Queensland

won’t be available for a number of weeks, some schools across the region have seen an increase in enrolments and/or enrolment enquiries recently.

Students aren’t the only new additions to local schools this year, with many hinterland schools welcoming a new cohort of teachers, staff and principles. Along with photos of new and returning students, GC&M News is looking forward to sharing the news of what’s happening in our great local schools throughout 2023.

If you’d like to share photos of your child’s first day of school, please send them through to reception@gcnews.com.au for inclusion in our next edition.

GLASS HOUSE Mountains residents were recently shocked to find that hundreds of letters and parcels that should have been delivered by Australia Post had been found dumped in a local bin. The concerning discovery was flagged on a local community Facebook page resulting in a member of the Glasshouse Mountains Men’s Shed eventually stepping up to retrieve the items.

Men’s Shed member Rick Canhan said he had been alerted to the discovery by his wife earlier in the day, however when it appeared that the items had still not been taken out of the council bin by the evening he decided to head over to assist.

Mr Canhan estimated around 300 pieces of mail and small packages had been discarded in the bin located near Matilda Fruit Barn at the bus stop near the corner of Bowen Road and Bricalli Road.

He said having to do a ‘bin dive’ was not pleasant at all but he didn’t want the items left over the weekend and potentially picked up by the rubbish truck and destroyed.

“It was really gross having to reach into the bin with the maggots and all sorts of rubbish, and it took me around five times to reach in to get all of the mail out. There would have been hundreds of items, most were bundled up by streets, but some were loose,” explained Mr Canhan.

He then contacted Caboolture Police who advised him to report the incident to Australia Post Head Office. Mr Canhan

said he was concerned about how he might have to get the retrieved mail back to local residents, however on the Monday morning following the Friday night retrieval, an Australia Post representative from the Caloundra Distribution Centre reached out to collect the items.

Speaking to GC&M News, an Australia Post spokesperson acknowledged that the incident was unacceptable and not in line with expected service standards.

While it appears, the person involved in the incident was a duty contractor and not an Australia Post employee, the spokesperson reiterated that Australia Post unreservedly apologised for the incident, and said that they were working closely with the principal contractor to investigate the matter further and take appropriate action.

Australia Post also wanted to reassure customers that the vast majority of the items had now been delivered, with the remaining few items scheduled for delivery over the following days.

“We unreservedly apologise for this incident. These actions are not in line with the high service standards we expect when delivering to the community. We take seriously our responsibility to deliver mail and parcels in our care and the vast majority of items are delivered safely. We thank the community for their efforts in recovering this mail, with most having already been delivered to the intended recipients. We encourage anyone with concerns about mail delivery to contact us on 13 POST for help and support,” said an Australia Post spokesperson.

Plans on track for Beerwah fire station

THE hinterland is set to receive an enhanced emergency services capability with plans for a purpose-built fire station at Beerwah progressing.

Minister for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Mark Ryan, said construction of a new Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) complex at Beerwah, which will house an integrated fire and emergency services capability, was on track for completion in 2025.

“The Sunshine Coast has seen significant population growth in recent years, and a boost to services in Beerwah to appropriately meet increased community demand is a logical move,” Mr Ryan said. “The existing auxiliary Beerwah FRS Station was constructed 35 years ago and is not suitable for redevelopment or expansion.

“A brand-new combined emergency services complex, with an additional six full-time equivalent (FTE) staff will be a welcome boost in resourcing to ensure Queenslanders are kept safe through flood, fire and other emergencies.

“We expect the new complex to be fully operational in time for the 2025 storm and cyclone season.”

Minister Ryan said a new, $6.5 million Fire and Rescue station is also in the pipeline for Caloundra South.

“The design stage for this project... is progressing well,” he said.

Kerry explained the benefit to small businesses – both directly and indirectly associated with the wedding industry – is extensive, and events such as the Summer Maleny Wedding Festival Trail give people a reason to come visit and explore our region.

“I see enormous value in it (the event) and what I love about it, is it’s about supporting small business,” said Kerry.

“The Sunshine Coast is mostly made of small businesses and it’s really what sets the hinterland apart. It’s what makes us unique.”

One of the country’s most iconic wedding photo backdrops, One Tree Hill, announced its closure this month following complaints to council. That prompted the council to demand the property owner apply for commercial zoning, which the owner’s were not prepared to do.

They had previously required a donation from users, with that money given to local not for profit and local organisations.

Inspiring lives of service

CONGRATULATIONS to the Sunshine Coast Council’s hinterland Australia Day

Nominees:

Citizen of the Year

Neil Collie – Glass House Mountains

Neil is supportive and encouraging, offering worth and guidance to those navigating their mental health journey. He encourages people to share their struggles openly and created a Facebook group called ‘Its okay to run or walk for mental health’. This Facebook group progressed into the Silver Fox Initiative of which he is the founder. By encouraging people to just speak up about their struggles and giving them a free safe space has positively impacted so many people.

Joanne Turner - Maleny

Jo is passionate about teaching others that movement can be medicine. She set up Maleny parkrun and volunteers every week at this event co-ordinating a team of volunteers. She volunteers at the local primary school, is an active volunteer coach with Maleny Little Athletics Club and a regular teacher at Rhee Taekwondo. She co-ordinates regular clean ups of the Obi Obi creek and coordinates the Australia Day clean up.

Senior Citizen of the Year

John Whan - Maleny

John is a consummate gentleman, holds high ethical standards, is a true family man, and has been a role model in our community for decades. He has embodied the objectives of Rotary

through 51 years of service and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow for his services to our community. He is an active member of U3A and the Probus Club of Maleny, a past affiliated member of Maleny Freemasons and is a longterm member of Windsor Freemasons Brisbane.

Dominique Cisse - Maleny

Dominique joined the Festuri multicultural community as a member and took over the association in 2014 when it was ready to close its doors. A single dad with six children, he still manages to keep the Festuri multicultural celebration bigger, stronger and better by having three festivals in three different locations on the Sunshine Coast. He also

recently opened a new Festuri sub-branch in the hinterland.

Shiralee Cooper - Montville

In 2023 Shiralee will have been president of the Montville Chamber of Commerce for 10 years. After teaching for 20 years, Shiralee followed her dream and opened a gallery to showcase local artists. The gallery has continued to focus on SEQ artists with most of the more than 20 artists based in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Sustainability

Kerrie and Richard Lonn – Bald Knob

The Lonns started their conservation journey, after a walk through with a Council Land for Wildlife officer revealed

a small section of old growth rainforest on their property. Despite having no experience, they began the long process to revegetate their whole property through the landholders scheme. Their methodical approach to everything has resulted in very few planting losses and a substantial increase in birdlife, thanks to the removal of invasive weeds.

Community Group Festuri - Maleny

Festuri has been bringing multicultural festivals to the Sunshine Coast for 23 years. This celebration of ethnicity and diversity provides acknowledgment for migrants that their culture is alive and can be passed on to their children. For the wider community, it is a colourful display of the world’s dance and music. Festuri is a valuable event and needs to continue for the health and vitality of the culturally and linguistically diverse community.

Kids in Action - Reesville

Kids in Action (KIA) is an environmental education initiative that aims to increase children’s environmental knowledge and understanding. KIA has run for 11 years, involving more than 100 schools, more than 3300 students with at least 50 volunteers helping each year.

Through the program students develop their leadership, organisation, creativity and communication skills.

KIA inspires and empowers students to take action and provides the knowledge, skills and tools to work collaboratively to solve local issues now and into the future.

Community co-op’s ‘Year of Local’

THE Maple Street Co-op has always focused on supporting local food production and sustaining the local economy. Now in its 43rd year, it is Australia’s longest-running co-operative grocery shop, now owned by over 1,300 community members.

2023 will be their ‘Year of Local’, celebrating and growing the range of local producers selling through their shop and incubating new growers.

Recently, there has been a major shift around the globe to turn towards purchasing local produce, recognising true freshness and value in shopping for recently harvested and handmade goods.

“The Year of Local and care of the environment go hand in hand in our Co-op. Strategically we are looking to reduce the impact of food miles, develop and support food supply chains and strengthen food sovereignty,” Co-op

board chair Elke Watson said.

“Building a resilient local economy has been the long-term core of our mission and this year we are being even bolder and shouting ‘local’ from the rooftops.”

Assistant manager Fi Emberton continues, “In last year’s member survey, the most valued Co-op qualities were our focus on local and organic produce and our Co-operative values and ethos. We provide our local suppliers with a seven day marketplace for their produce and at fair prices for the producer and members.”

Changes are also arriving within the shop.

“We are always improving our work practices to make it easy for members and staff to get fresh, local produce onto our shelves,” business manager Peter Pamment said.

The Glasshouse Country community can look also forward to a range of

upcoming initiatives for the ‘Year of Local’, including:

• Farm tours

• A ‘Seed Dating’ night in partnership with Maleny’s Seed Library to learn about growing

• Consigning, and selling through the Co-op

• A trivia night

• After hours meet ups for suppliers and members

• An origins celebration with founding Co-op members

• A dinner out in a paddock spotlighting our local food.

To take part in this exciting year, you can subscribe to the Co-op newsletter at www.maplestreet.coop/subscribe or contribute to our community events via email: assistantmanager@maplestreet. coop

FESTIVE season holidays across Queensland are on track to deliver more than $3 billion to tourism operators and the State’s visitor economy.

From 10 December to 9 January, Queensland and interstate holidaymakers generated 15 million visitor nights, up almost 2.5 per cent on the 2021 festive season. “This initial Christmas school holiday data shows Queensland’s domestic tourism recovery remains strong, on track and nation-leading,” Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said.

“In more great news for Queensland jobs and tourism operators, this festive season’s more than $3 billion holiday spend will continue to grow ahead of Australia Day. The Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Whitsundays were the most popular destinations.

It’s predicted the total number of visitors traveling to Queensland’s worldclass destinations will be more than 1.5 million.

How safe and clean is your drinking water?

Water is our most precious resource. In a similar way that all drinking water is regularly maintained and cleaned, the same applies for rainwater tanks and systems. If you own a water tank, then you probably already know that they require a certain amount of upkeep to ensure that the tank is operating at the optimal level and the water you are getting from it is of a high quality.

“A lot of people are not aware that rainwater quality is affected as soon as it hits our roof,” said Ryan Davies, owner and operator of Controlled Property Services in Maleny, specialising in water tank cleaning.

“It is so important to keep your gutters and tanks clean. Hazardous matter found in tanks can include organic sludge, silt and ashes, animal droppings and even decaying carcasses.

“Parasites such as Giardia, Bacteria such as E.Coli and Cryptosporidium, and insect larvae from mosquitoes and sandflies can also be present in tanks and these can potentially cause illness to your family.”

Ryan recommends a clean of your water tank about every two years (depending on the tree coverage over the roof line), and to clean tanks while there is plenty of water in them rather than waiting until water levels are low.

“Incoming water will stir up any sludge and sediment at the bottom of your tank and this will then contaminate the fresh water.

“It is also a good idea to clean your roof gutters every three months and

keep an eye on your gutter mesh for bugs and leaf litter,” he said.

“If you have a lot of trees surrounding your tanks, you will want to keep a closer eye on them though because it stands to reason that there is more likelihood of leaf litter or bird or animal droppings making their way into your tank.”

Tank cleaning also offers additional benefits than just water quality.

“Regular cleaning will minimise damage to your pump, increase the longevity of

water filters, and reduce the possibility of damage to your household taps,” he said.

“If you find that you have coloured or bad tasting water coming out of your taps, it is definitely time to have your tank cleaned.”

A plumber by trade, Ryan can also check on your pipes and taps to make sure they are in good working order.

“I offer First Flush system installations on downpipes and Leaf Eater installations to minimise contaminants entering your

water tanks,” said Ryan. “This is a great way to keep your tanks clean and water safe between cleaning.

“This time of year is an optimum time to service your tanks because we generally experience a higher level of rainfall. February is usually the wettest month on the Sunshine Coast.”

Ryan will travel all over the Sunshine Coast and hinterland so give him a call on 0411 582 900 to book in your next tank clean.

Outspoken authors’ coming to Maleny

OUTSPOKEN’S program of author events for 2023 kicks off with an exceptional line-up of writers including Dr Chris Sarra in February and Alexander McCall Smith in March.

Dr Sarra is a Gurang Gurang/Taribelang man, a former Queenslander of the Year, and the author of Good Morning, Mr Sarra, a memoir that tells the story of how a young boy from Bundaberg grew up to become principal of the Cherbourg School.

It was there he began to develop the concept of stronger, smarter, an idea which radically changed teaching both in Queensland and around the country. At present Chris holds a senior position in the Queensland Government and is Chairman of the Stronger Smarter Institute.

Dr Sarra will be talking about his book and, in response to the Voice to Parliament referendum, will also talk about the three common pillars of effective reconciliation: Treaty, Truthtelling and the Voice.

Joanna Jenkins, who has written How To Kill a Client, will be the ‘introducing author’ for the February 1 evening with Chris. Joanna grew up on a small farm in country Queensland.

After graduating from the University of Queensland in the late eighties with degrees in English Literature and Law, Joanna practised as a solicitor in Big Law, including for many years as a partner of an international law firm.

How to Kill a Client is her first novel. It is a fast-paced and wickedly funny thriller about power and revenge, set in the

pristine towers of capitalism. Alexander McCall Smith, often referred to as ‘Sandy’, is one of the world’s most prolific and best-loved authors. As a professor of Medical Law he worked in universities in the UK and abroad before turning his

hand to writing fiction. He has written over 100 books, including short stories and a number of immensely popular children’s books. He will be speaking at Outspoken on March 10.

LIBRARY NEWS

Meet Soul Cauley, passionate about saving and sharing seeds and garden produce as well as building community knowledge and connectedness.

A member of Sunshine Coast Libraries since 2011, she started a Facebook page in March 2022, with support from Waste Action Maleny with the aim to gather a collective of passionate people who are willing and keen to work together to establish a public seed library in the township of Maleny.

With 199 members and growing Soul Cauley said the group meet monthly to do more than swap seeds and cuttings.

“It’s about making friends, sharing knowledge and fostering community whilst increasing community food resilience and food growing skills,” Soul said.

Soul approached Sunshine Coast Libraries about housing the seeds.

“There is so much to love about libraries. They are the heart of our community and provide one of very few spaces where we can gather for free. Libraries are a hub of knowledge and adventure, not only through books, but through workshops and events as well. Libraries belong to the people and it’s so exciting that now they will provide a home for seed sharing.”

The Blackall Range Woodcrafters’ Guild have crafted boxes to contain the seeds. When it launches in February, customers will be able to take seeds for free with the aim of growing and harvesting new seed to return to the library to share again. Soul will curate the collection to replenish stock and eliminate weeds.

What hope have we got

LAST week I struggled to breathe whilst swimming my laps - recommended by my doctor to help lung function - all because the people at the sports ground were burning off.

Actually as we had had over 20mm rain it was smoking not burning. Smoking badly. We were told they had a permit from SCC to burn.

Why?

This area is right in town near sporting facilities, caravan parking, housing! Does SCC give a hoot about peoples health? It’s time they totally banned burning and do their bit for our health and our environment.

Green waste can be composted and mulched - no excuses.

White elephant in room

FOLLOWING my letter on the Borumba Dam pumped hydro scheme on 22 November 2022 your readers may be interested in the progress of the Snowy 2.0 pumped hydro project now being built in the Snowy Mountains.

This scheme will use two existing dam reservoirs 27km apart with a 700 metre height difference between them to send water down through tunnels and

receivership after a $375 million dollar loss and a $300 million capital deficit last year and the cost has now blown out from $4.25 billion dollars to around $6 billion dollars which does not include $4 billion dollars needed for new transmission lines to Sydney and Melbourne.

For a project that was supposed to cost $2 billion dollars and be completed in 2021, even “The Conversation” has doubts about its operational viability and predicts that it won’t be completed until 2027.

It is also very likely that fossil fuel generated electricity will be needed for pumping on cloudy, windless days. No wonder Australian electricity costs are “going through the roof” with this “white elephant” energy planning.

Fix the roads already

HOW long does it take to fix something? It will be one year next month after all that rain that washed out part of the range that we call the 4000 (between Peachester and Woodford).

It has had traffic signal lights this whole time.

Now, I don’t know if it’s a Main Roads or local Council road; I think it’s a Main Roads problem.

I’ve heard the engineers don’t know how to fix it; really, are they a bunch of dodos?

Well, maybe they should find someone with half a brain and fix it because my wife who works in Maleny three days a week is sick and tired of stopping at them! It’s a major transport route for thousands of vehicles every day, so it should be a priority to fix.

And yet, in one of the greatest literary failures since JK Rowling’s editor didn’t do much of job, Harry’s memoir neglected to mention the day he visited the Sunshine Coast hinterland and dropped in to Australia Zoo.

For me it still seems like yesterday and while I doubt I’m going to get a book deal out of it, or even much of

mosquitoes and swearing a lot.

But his secret visit to Australia Zoo? Not a peep. Maybe it was out of respect.

The day our world’s collided started quite normally. A weekday I believe - my lived truth thinks it was a Wednesday - and the zoo was pumping.

But while one moment we were in our change rooms preparing for the next show, we turned around would you believe it but the the entire zoo

And then, while distracted and speculating on our bright new future, none other than the young Prince Harry (with somewhat of an entourage) strolls in.

Turns out he was having a break from his mustering and wanted to check out the Crown Jewel of Queensland’s tourist attractions... me. So I did what I knew best and performed one of my greatest acts.

But to be honest he was hard work and didn’t seem to be having the time of his life despite

my efforts. In fact at one point staff couldn’t find him, only to realise he’d slipped away for a cigarette near another enclosure. He said and did the right things though and then two hours later he was off and that was that. Maybe he was right not to mention it.

Not long after I made my escape, but that’s another story. By the way, Spare might be full of revelations, but it’s written by a child. No big words please!

PROCESSED meats are a staple in Australian diets, but according to experts at UNSW Sydney they contribute to cancer risk.

Many of us have heard about a link between processed meats and colorectal cancer, which kills more than 5,000 Australians each year. Is this just a myth, or are we putting ourselves at increased cancer risk by including processed meats in our diet?

According to data from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), we consumed approximately 110 kilograms per person per year in 2018, second only to the United States. Based on the last national diet survey in 2011-12, up to a quarter of the meat consumed has been salted, cured, fermented, smoked or otherwise processed.

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) at the World Health Organization (WHO) assessed over 800 studies to understand the link between processed meats and cancer. Substantial evidence linked processed meats to colorectal cancer caused the IARC to classify processed meats as a carcinogen

So, how does this work? There are several explanations, the first and foremost being nitrites found in processed meat products.

Professor Bernard Stewart from the UNSW Medicine & Health states that these nitrites interact with the body to cause cancer-causing substances.

Additionally, cooking processed meats also has cause for cancer concern as well.

Get tougher on vape scourge

THE Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) says tighter regulations on nicotine vaping products (NVPs) are critical to prevent Australians from harm.

The RACGP called for stronger border controls, stricter regulation of products, restricting flavours to tobacco and pharmaceutical-like packaging with health risk warnings, and restricting NVP supply to a three-month prescription.

RACGP President Dr Nicole Higgins said vaping products that were sold as nonnicotine products, yet contained nicotine, were of particular concern to GPs.

“Times have changed, and they’ve [Big Tobacco] adapted by becoming Big Nicotine. More and more young people who have never smoked cigarettes are now vaping and this is deeply concerning,” Dr Higgins said.

Dr Higgins further warns that due to their successful marketing tactics as safer alternatives, Australia is at risk for trading one public health disaster for another.

shouldn’t they carry warning labels, like cigarettes? According to Prof. Stewart, it’s not that simple.

“On the one hand, the evidence concerning cancer causation by consumption of processed meats is as definitive as the evidence that tobacco smoke and asbestos cause lung cancer.

On the other hand, the same level of preventative action is in no way warranted.”

Compared to tobacco smoke, which has a 25% risk of lung cancer for heavy smokers, processed meats carries a 6% colorectal cancer risk for frequent consumers. Meaning that although there is strong evidence, the actual impact of

an Accredited Practising Dietitian, is researching how eating whole grains may protect against colorectal cancer.

“The whole grain is a bundle of nutrients that has anti-carcinogenic properties,” A/Prof. Grafenauer said. “It contains many compounds that are stimulating antioxidant activity in the gut and are being protective.

“Also, because whole grains are fibrous, they can also bind carcinogens and remove them from the gut.”

With this knowledge, what’s on the menu this summer is for you to decide.

Aid for small businesses

THE Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman, Bruce Billson, has urged small business owners to take time early in the new year to take stock of their mental and financial wellbeing.

“Too often the daily quest to keep the doors open and manage the many immediate demands prevents time being spent thinking about the health, future and goals of your business. And for that matter, your own health.”

Research published by Treasury just before Christmas confirmed that many small business owners struggle with mental health challenges.

One-in-five of those surveyed had been diagnosed with a mental health condition by a doctor or health professional. In some industries such as manufacturing, retail trade, accommodation and food services it was one-in-three.

Small business owners said a key cause of stress was finding a balance between the demands of work, family and personal life followed by lockdowns owing to COVID-19.

“For small and family business owners, their identities are interwoven into their business and the stakes are so much higher than just a job,” he said.

The study found that small business owners feel acute pressure to ‘do it all’

and to keep up the appearance of being fine even when they are struggling. They feel others – family, business partners, employees, and suppliers – depended on them.

One piece of advice from Mr Bilson was to talk to trusted advisers and networks to find solutions. He further commented on the reliability of independent views as a vital ingredient to blend with optimistic entrepreneurs.

Most business owners who responded to the study said they had not used any of the support services available due to fears of poor treatment from disclosed diagnosis.

Mr Billson urged small and family business owners to take advantage of the many free support services provided by small business experts.

The Ombudsman also said it was important that policy makers, program designers and regulators understand that a time-poor small business does not have the same bandwidth as a big business.

“We should not forget just how vital small and family businesses are. After the global financial crisis, the bulk of new job growth was driven by small businesses. The same can be true now,” he said.

The Bleeding Obvious™

A quest to save Australian lives

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss your teeth you are not in perfect health and your body is more susceptible to disease including COVID-19. Can you imagine taking an old-fashioned nail brush, gently rubbing this across you finger nails and thinking it was ‘ok’ if blood started to appear? Or simply pressing on any area of your body and seeing blood seep out? I would suggest that if either of these two occurrences happened you would be making a very quick visit to your medical Dr or an Emergency Department. But thousands of Australians seem to think it perfectly fine if their gums bleed - it is not and here’s why.

Periodontitis or Periodontal / Gum Disease as it often referred to, is a chronic inflammatory disease that compromises the integrity of the toothsupporting tissues, that is gingiva, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, collectively known as the periodontium. Inflammation (literally meaning “In Flames”) is one of the bodies defence mechanisms to kill germs. Inflammation is a great thing, when it is harnessed for short periods of time, such as when you cut yourself, but when inflammation is sustained or even permanent as with untreated Periodontitis, then the affects can be deadly. The germs that cause cavities and gum disease don’t stay put and can spread throughout the body, especially if your immune system is weak and infections can be serious, even resulting in hospitalisations. But don’t take my word for this, over the past 20 years the broader medical community have come together and conducted thousands of studies on this topic. Common sense tells us that the body is not departmentalised, but beyond this the research is conclusive and has directly linked the following medical issues with oral disease: -

• Cardiovascular Disease

• Diabetes

• Respiratory Diseases

• Stroke Kidney Diseases

• Peripheral vascular disease

• Dementia

• Adverse pregnancy outcomes

• Aspiration pneumonia

• Stomach ulcers Oral cancers

Obesity If there is a history of any of the above in your family and you have bleeding gums you are at a greater risk of developing these problems.

You will see this list includes Pneumonia and Respiratory diseases, so exactly what we are witnessing today with the most recent version of a Coronavirus disease. Since the last major outbreak of Coronavirus back in 2012, referred to as Sar’s, Universities around the world have links a person’s susceptibility to catching Coronavirus to the reduced immune response caused by Periodontitis. The same would have to be true for the latest attack of Coronavirus - COVID-19

So, if your gums are inflamed or bleed when you floss or brush, then you need to seek help.

Your regular dentist is well qualified to diagnose your individual situation and many can treat this disease. In certain cases, your dentist might refer you to a Specialist Periodontist for treatment, but whatever the outcome you should seek diagnosis immediately.

Finally, did you know that wearing dentures actually shortness life expectancy by 10 years?*

If untreated the natural results of Periodontitis is the loss of tooth which eventually can lead to the total loss of all teeth and the need for a denture. Many studies have been done and show this group of people on average live 10 years less than people with a healthy mouth - let’s not let it get to that.

And the above is The Bleeding Obvious Dr Richard Johnston is the Practice Principal at Beerwah Dental and is available by appointment to provide you with an assessment of your oral health. You may also wish to pick-up a free copy of the Dental Board’s report ‘Links between oral health and general health’. Christmas is over once again – so what next?

ACCORDING to the traditional Christian calendar the twelve days of Christmas end on the 5th of January. For western Christianity the next day, the 6th of January, is the festival of Epiphany. The season of Epiphany has from four to nine Sundays before we move into the 40 days of Lent on Ash Wednesday which is determined by the date of Easter Sunday which falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the March equinox. All very complicated, but that is why the date of Easter is a movable feast.

We are now in the season of Epiphany which means to be made known, revealed, open and clear and I often describe Epiphany as the time when the lectionary texts answer the question, “Who is this Baby born in Bethlehem and what does his life, death and resurrection mean for my life?”

If we look through the gospel readings for the Epiphany season, we see that Jesus is King, not only of the Jews, but of all people as he is worshipped by the wise men from the East. Then he is declared to be God’s Son at his Baptism. John the

with Tom Jantke Lutheran Church, Glasshouse Country

Baptiser proclaims him to be “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Other texts describe him as the Lord who has power over creation like when he calms the storm as well as power over the forces of evil (or the evil one) when he casts out evil spirits.

In the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany this year he is the one who calls his followers to be who we are - salt of the earth and light of the world. He doesn’t say we should be, but rather that we are the salt of the earth, and we are the light of the world.

We may not always do a perfect job of that. In fact, our efforts to be salt and light are always less than perfect. But we do strive to make this world a better place and let his light shine through us to show his love and forgiveness which is for all.

Remembering life of Col Brighton

Contributed by Charles Russell LANDSBOROUGH Seventh-day Adventist Church members, family and friends gathered together on the 18th of January to remember and celebrate the life of Col Brighton who passed away on December 25 after a long battle with cancer.

Over 150 people attended the function at the Beerwah Community Hall. Representatives from various organisations including the Queensland Ambulance Service, St John Ambulance, South Queensland Adventist Conference, Adventist Aviation Association, welfare network groups as well as the residents from the Glasshouse Views Retirement Village were represented.

Col was remembered as a kind-hearted, dedicated and practical person who always gave his time, energy and effort in the service of others.

His family read tributes and shared stories about his life.

Other friends and community members also spoke about their friendship with Col.

His daughter Nicole received a posthumous award from the Queensland Ambulance Service for her father’s dedication to the Service as a member of the Caloundra Local Ambulance Committee and his work as a first aid instructor.

The number of people present testified to the influence Col had on all those who knew him.

Col loved his God, his family, his church and his community and will be deeply missed.

Backyard wildlife

A GROUP of native plants that just keep giving throughout the year are the Coleus (syn. Plectranthus).

There are many exotic Coleus, but SE QLD is also blessed with many native ones and one particularly outstanding performer in keeping the bees, butterflies and a range of other small nectar and pollen eaters fed is Coleus alloplectus.

A fantastic groundcover to 50cm, with silvery/grey foliage and purple flower spikes, it flowers throughout the year and is almost constantly massed with

flowers, providing welcome sustenance to so many small critters. Our native Coleus thrive in full sun and also dappled shade.

One of our other favourites is Coleus nidus, with dark green glossy textured leaves and red stems.

Its flowers are white and although not as prolific, are also sought after by a range of insects and will take a bit of shade.

Talking about insects, it’s been a boom time for some of the Swallowtail Butterflies in our nursery, with lots of Citrus (both native and exotic) to nibble on.

Our native Citrus, Finger Lime - Citrus australasica and Round Lime - Citrus australis, are not only great to grow for their fruit and prickly habitat for small birds, but they’re food sources for butterflies including the Dainty Swallowtail, Capaneus Swallowtail, Orchard Swallowtail and Ambrax Swallowtail.

And before you ask, no please don’t spray caterpillars on your citrus with insecticides. If they’re defoliating a newly planted and small tree, consider

re-locating them to a bigger citrus with lots of leaves to spare.

But for bigger plants, think of their nibbling of your tree, as giving it a gentle prune (which you need to do anyway), with the bonus of the fertiliser (manure), that they conveniently deposit around the base of your tree (the ultimate in recycling).

But wait there’s more, on top of all these benefits you get to see some beautiful butterflies fluttering around your garden when the grow up!

Passion and drive pays off for Teagan

RISING local dance talent, Teagan Potter, has been selected to study at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

The 18-year-old Mount Mellum dancer auditioned for WAAPA after training at multiple dance schools and her mum Annie said she was thrilled to have been accepted to study a Bachelor of Contemporary Dance this year.

“Contemporary is her genre, that’s what she loves, they do offer other programs but that’s the one she wanted to do, she was awarded a secondment to the university,” she said.

“She joined the first Australian Dance Collective ensemble in Brisbane and stayed there for four years, then they awarded Teagan a secondment to trial for the course, and she loved it.”

Teagan started dancing at three years old at a small dance school across the road from her grandparents’ Peachester home, and her mum said she immediately fell in love with dancing.

“My mum lives in Peachester and she would look after Teagan when I used to work night shifts as a nurse, and she asked if she could take her to this dance place,” Annie said.

“I agreed as long as she was enjoying it, and she absolutely loved it, she took to it like a duck to water and hasn’t stopped since.”

Teagan has barely stopped pursuing her dream of professional dancing, working across dance companies, schools and even productions, which helped develop

school at Unity College, and received the Principal’s Award in 2022,” Annie said.

He mum said how proud she was of her daughter and how contemporary dancing had benefitted Teagan mentally and physically throughout the years.

“I’m proud of her achievements but I’m more proud of her determination,

Bowls club starts year on a high

IT’S normally closed Saturday’s but Maleny Bowls Club happily welcomed dozens of bowlers from across the region last weekend, resulting in record one-day revenue in a welcome boost to the new year.

The club opened for the day after Kilcoy, Woodford and Glass House closed for

the month to retop their greens making Maleny’s artificial surface a prime and welcome venue.

Secretary Brett Gillis said the day generated over $2000 in takings and with strong support from new sponsors, the club as in a strong position to kickstart 2023.

“We had 64 bowlers rock up from Kilcoy, Woodford and Glass House, and we ended up making gross $2000 for the day which is amazing,” Brett said.

He said the new sponsors were proving a great boost to the club.

“We’ve got Audika in Maleny, they are coming on in our first monthly pairs game for the year and are giving a five-minute spiel on what they offer and will give us $250 for the pleasure,” he said.

“Then the Maleny Hotel will give us $300 for the February and March monthly

she has this passion and this drive, and she hasn’t let anyone stop her, even those who have tried to bring her down.

“If you could see her dancing, I think you would understand… when she’s on stage this light comes on and you see this beautiful dancer and it gives her the opportunity to express how she feels.”

Bright 2023 for San Training

THE San Training Centre based in Beerwah and Maleny is hopeful of training the next martial arts champion, offering newcomers a free trial as part of its back to school special.

The club also have a three week back to school special finishing at the end of February, allowing local kids to try Taekwondo for free to hopefully boost registrations.

It comes as Owner Cameron Taylor said the club had a packed schedule for the centre, including preparing for world championships and cadet world championships selections in February and June respectively.

“Charlie and I are trying to get selected into the Australian team, and its Charlie’s first year as a senior,” he said.

“Jack who won the national championships last year is going to try out at the New Zealand selections on the same weekend, because he is a New Zealand citizen.

“Our younger fighters Sonia and Connor have got the cadet world championship and that will be a big competition for them, so that’s pretty exciting.”

The fighters, particularly the senior fighters, are training hard to perform well at the world championship selections, which will be followed up by the Australian Open later in July.

“The seniors are training seven or eight sessions a week, its full steam ahead at

pairs days, so we are starting to get some momentum with local sponsors coming on.”

Brett said the Maleny Hotel and the club were forming a good business relationship including a Tuesday bowls and lunch deal and to sponsor their junior playing shirts.

“Every Tuesday from 10-12 we have a

deal for people to play a game of bowls and then have a light lunch at the hotel for $25… we are both promoting it and will hopefully attract more players,” he said.

“(Local brewer) Brouhaha currently sponsor our regular member playing shirts but Maleny Hotel wants to sponsor the junior member playing shirts as well.”

Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Helen Uhlmann

WE’VE had a very busy week on the lawns. On our Thursday play day, we had two games underway. Helen Uhlmann, Sally Adams and Sarah Widin decided to break from tradition and play Ricochet Croquet for a change. Sarah won convincingly against a double of Sally and Helen with 15 hoops to 7 in a very enjoyable match. Meanwhile, Ken Barker and Dianne Horsman played Association Croquet with Ken winning 16:14. The Maleny weather produced a very pleasant afternoon for play, and with Dianne’s delicious chocolate cake for afternoon tea, what could be more perfect?

Friday saw our group of friends from Caloundra come up for their monthly visit to enjoy playing Golf Croquet with some of our club members. As always, a very enjoyable time was had by all, despite the weather being a bit unreliable. Groups are always welcome to come and have a game on our lawns. We even provide a bit of guidance on how to play with a cuppa thrown in. Bargain!

Saturday coaching was well attended. Vince Carbery and Sarah Widin, our coaches, had us working on hoop approaches and take offs across the lawn and we then went on to practice these in a couple of relaxed games. The pointers we receive during these sessions are always helpful in improving our game and we enjoy interesting discussions around strategy and some of the more complex aspects of the game.

Sunday afternoon saw four singles games played. Sarah Widin and Nick Cram had a very close but low scoring match, with Sarah just getting ahead of Nick with a score of 6:5. Donna Manning played Ken

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 – FEBRUARY 18

Sometimes we feel burdened by our past. Focus on the present, Aquarius. Who you are tomorrow depends on the choices you make today. If necessary, learn to forgive yourself or others. Or perhaps you find yourself in a situation where you’ve forgotten how to say “no”. It’s incredibly liberating to put yourself first for a change.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20

It’s a week to rid yourself of restrictions, especially regarding lacklustre romance or being stuck in a dead-end job. The cosmos now allows you to discard emotional or physical baggage that block you from taking action. Do this, and new opportunities will start to appear. Finally, you can make the best of your very special talents.

ARIES

MARCH 21 – APRIL 20

With the cosmos offering many Ariens a triad of wealth, pleasure and opportunity, you’d be forgiven for believing in miracles. Here’s your chance to make a dream come true. Truly, it’s a wonderful week for progress, with even the smallest effort on your part producing great results. You’re at your financial, creative and sexual best.

and their skills are shaping up well in preparation for this.

This week will see our lawns open on Australia Day for a “Come and Try” opportunity. We’re looking forward to welcoming our visitors to this event. All are welcome.

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2pm for 2.30pm start. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Please arrive at 2pm for games to be arranged by 2.30pm.

TAURUS

APRIL 21 – MAY 20

Sometime in the recent past, inappropriate relationships or situationseither at home or at work - were weeded out. This may have caused some distress, but it was necessary. The only individuals now left in your life are those of real value. With this improved clarity of vision, you’ll no longer fall under the spell of romantic illusions.

GEMINI

MAY 21 – JUNE 21

Almost everything has its upside, which is well worth remembering this week. The real problem is that you may feel a tad dazed or confused. When you feel this vulnerable, it can help to put some distance between you and others. Sit quietly, and come to terms with a few home truths. Learn how to turn current circumstances to your advantage.

CANCER

JUNE 22 - JULY 22

It’s a week to read all the fine print, and carefully file away important documents so they aren’t lost. Back up all crucial paperwork. Daily routines may cause you to become stressed or agitated, resulting in sleepless nights. Tempers could flare. Avoid letting any aggression to turn into overkill. It’s better to tame the beast within.

LEO

JULY 23 – AUGUST 23

So you’re finally acting on your more ardent ambitions? This means lucrative times ahead. If you’re on a career path, push it for all it’s worth. Financial prospects look bright - and a penchant for speculation should show a great return. Ditto with your love-life. Couples should forgive past misgivings, and don’t be afraid to express your emotions.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 – SEPTEMBER 22

This week could start with surprising changes personally or professionally as hidden forces fling you in directions you probably won’t want to go. Exposed secrets or an intense emotional experience may also leave you reeling but soon you’ll come to realise that these changes will have actually improved your life.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 23

You’ve known for ages how talented you are. And with planetary forces on your side this week, you can finally convince others of the same thing. It’s not often that the cosmos offers such generosity - so make the best of this time while you can. But don’t be too flash with any extra cash - spend only what you can really afford.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 – NOVEMBER 22

It’s the ethereal rather than the material that captures your imagination this week. You can happily enjoy what you’ve accumulated so far, but you also let your mind break away from immediate financial concerns. A socially active Venus also brings new people into your life. Life starts to become more agreeable.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 – DECEMBER 21

Why is it that you always seem to want the reverse of what’s offered, Sagittarius? When thrown into the limelight, you want quiet. When left alone, you want to be included. Either way, you take to authority like a wild centaur - so heaven help those who push their case beyond reason. This week, too, there’s too much to be done in too little time.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 20

When on a roll, very little can break the Capricorn momentum, and if ingenuity is needed this week, you’re well-equipped for the tasks at hand. But don’t trust others so readily. Sometimes your genius is left unappreciated, while more dishonest individuals walk away with all the ideas, and the profits. Stay cautious.

LAUGHS

When one door closes and another door opens, you are probably in prison.

To me, “drink responsibly” means don’t spill it.

Age 60 might be the new 40, but 9:00 pm is the new midnight.

It’s the start of a brand new day, and I’m off like a herd of turtles.

The older I get, the earlier it gets late.

When I say, “The other day,” I could be referring to any time between yesterday and 15 years ago.

I remember being able to get up without making sound effects.

I had my patience tested. I’m negative.

Remember, if you lose a sock in the dryer, it comes back as a Tupperware lid that doesn’t fit any of your containers.

FOR THE KIDS

If you’re sitting in public and a stranger takes the seat next to you, just stare straight ahead and say, “Did you bring the money?”

When you ask me what I am doing today, and I say “nothing,” it does not mean I am free. It means I am doing nothing.

I finally got eight hours of sleep. It took me three days, but whatever.

I run like the winded.

I hate when a couple argues in public, and I missed the beginning and don’t know whose side I’m on.

When someone asks what I did over the weekend, I squint and ask, “Why, what did you hear?”

When you do squats, are your knees supposed to sound like a goat chewing on an aluminum can stuffed with celery?

Summary: This lovely girl is quite shy when you first meet her. She will need someone patient who will wait for her to learn trust.
