Hi Everyone

I

know I always bang on about how great my job is, and even though we do the same thing each week (make a paper) what I like is you just never know what you might be writing about from one day to the next, and when I escape from the office, where I might be. Recently I found myself at the Mooloolah Pony Club learning about the environmentally friendly elements of their new wash down facility for horses – see that story in the ‘I give a Moo for Mooloolah’ on page 14. I’ve also recently been in a foyer filled with Pirates at Embracia Aged Care Facility (well not real pirates of course), and at a networking dinner for the Glasshouse Country Chamber

of Commerce at the new restaurant ‘Tuskanas’ which has opened at the Hideaway on Steve Irwin Way at Beerwah. This week I have also had some very in-depth conversations about wedding gowns, photography, and cakes to power lifting, strong man and highland games activities, through to military service, and how the NBN roll out will continue. So if you have an idea for a story about something that is happening in our community, that you think would be interesting for our readers – make sure you let us know. You can always email me with ideas editorial@ gcnews.com.au or give us a call. So once again I hope there is something of interest for everyone in this edition and happy reading. Regards,

Local News

He’s got the power By Lea Parkes

Many readers will be aware of Beerburrum’s Strong Man, Tim O’Shea who has been a regular in the pages of GCNews for his Strongman, Powerlifting and Highland Games achievements over the past few years. GCNews recently caught up with 36-year-old Tim when he shared his latest news, that he will be putting his 193 cm, 140kg body to the test soon when he heads to Argentina to compete in the Global Powerlifting Committee (GPC) World Powerlifting Championships. Back in June, Tim took out the National Title in the 140kg equipped division, with a squat at 365kgs, bench press of 230kgs and deadlift of 287.5kgs. While these aren’t his personal bests, they are his competition bests, and stack up really strongly against the medal winners from the last World Championships. This year was the third time Tim has taken out this division at a national level, and qualified for the World Championships, but on the first two occasions he put family commitments ahead of competing. On the first occasion Tim’s wife Jody had just had their third child, which meant they had three children under three, so he has passed up the opportunity.

HINTERLAND ACCOUNTING SERVICES

Tim shows how a 260kg bench press is done This time round, after competing for five years, and with the children now a little older, he has decided that the time is right to take a shot at the World Title. I asked Tim what his family thought about his passion. He said his wife was really supportive as she knows how much he enjoys it, and Tim’s son who is now five is impressed that his dad can drag a plane down a run way. But Tim isn’t sure if the kids just think everyone’s dad can do that? This week Tim will head to the competition which starts on September 28. However first he will have to endure 27 gruelling hours of travel on five flights just to reach the competition location at Iguazu Falls. Fortunately for Tim, he won’t be competing until the final day of the 10 day competition, so his body will have time to recover from the journey. We’ll keep you posted on Tim’s results after the event. ‘Go Tim’ we will be cheering you on from here!

Glass House Mountains local Brian Lewis was recently advised that he would be receiving a Meritorious Unit Citation as a member of the Force Communications Unit Australian Defence Fore, for services undertaken more than 20 years ago. During Brian’s 30 years of Military service in the army he served seven years in the infantry and 23 years as Military Police and during his service he saw two tours of Malaysia and one tour of Cambodia. The recent citation was for the ‘sustained outstanding service in warlike operations through the provision of communications support to the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia from 15 March 1992 to 7 October 1993’. The initial task of communications support expanded to include the installation of a technically sophisticated and geographical extensive communications network linking 21 provinces of Cambodia. The challenge to complete this task within strict deadlines and during the wet season was compounded by the fact that they were operating in a hostile environment, with constant threat of violence from the warring parties. On many occasions communications facilities were operated under threat from artillery, mortars and small arms fire. Members of Brian’s unit were deployed to 50 locations throughout Cambodia to operate the network and they were also required to work for

long periods of time without relief. Brian comes from a family that is well represented in the military and police service and field of nursing so for him choosing a career involving service for his country seemed like a natural thing to do. Initially he planned to go into the Police Service, but instead at 17 he followed in his fathers and brothers footsteps and headed into the Army. When he first joined up he had eight relatives in his regiment and there were currently 22 members of his family serving in the military. The family tradition is continuing with one of Brian’s sons now in the process of joining the police force. Even though it has taken over 20 years for the recognition of the work that Brian was involved in Cambodia he is clearly proud to have received the citation. After leaving the army, he initially took on a role with the RSPCA in Brisbane where he was a Senior Inspector, however following a car accident while working he sustained serious injuries, which have meant that he could no longer continue working. Eighteen months ago, he and his wife settled in to Glass House Mountains and are enjoying the laid back lifestyle we have here in Glasshouse Country.

‘Hands Off Halls Creek’ campaign heats up There appears to be growing disquiet at the State Government’s insistence that land adjoining the world renowned Pumicestone Passage be included for future broad-scale urban development. The massive area under consideration – generally called Halls Creek Identified Growth Area – borders the Pumicestone Passage between Bells Creek and Coochin Creek, east of the Bruce Highway. According to respected groups such as Take Action for Pumicestone Passage, Sunshine Coast Environment Council, Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network and Organisation Sunshine Coast Associations of Residents, any future urban development of the area should be rejected. Even the Sunshine Coast Council has repeatedly identified that Halls Creek is not the best option for our community and the local environment. In previous public statements, Sunshine Coast Council Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer leaves no doubt about council’s position. “As a councillor who served also with the old Caloundra City Council I can say with authority the position of the local community on this issue has been consistent - it wants Halls Creek catchment and the Pumicestone Passage protected from urban development,” said Cr Dwyer. “Caloundra City Council echoed the sentiments of the community and had a long-standing policy of protecting Halls Creek. “Sunshine Coast Council adopted this position as well - backed by a large body of supporting evidence which goes back many years.

“This is an issue where the stance of the council and community has been consistent, credible and clear,” he stated. Sunshine Coast Environment Council’s Executive Officer Wiebe ter Bals says that the call to develop Halls Creek goes to the very heart of who we are as a region. “It will have major ramifications for our ability to preserve the character, amenity and lifestyle that make this region such a wonderful place to live,” he explains. “Halls Creek represents further urban sprawl on the coastal strip, putting more pressure on one of the region’s main natural assets in the Pumicestone Passage, a waterway already under severe stress. “It provides little opportunity to integrate with existing and future transport infrastructure or continue to build the region as a ‘community of communities’. “Development of Halls Creek would also extend the reach of urbanised areas further south towards the Moreton Bay area, reducing even further the inter-urban break between Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast,” he said. To better inform the community, a range of events have been organised which you are invited to attend and participate in. The Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) is coordinating a community information evening at the Beerburrum Hall (Anzac Street, Beerburrum) on Friday, September 26 starting at 6.30pm.

Representatives from various community groups involved will provide an overview and history of the Halls Creek issue. The evening will give you a chance to learn more about this issue and how it will have impacts for generations to come. On Monday, September 29, the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) is hosting another of their popular Pumicestone Passage fact finding cruises to assist interested community groups and individuals in understanding what the Halls Creek issue is all about. The two hour cruise leaves from the Caloundra Powerboat Club at 9.30am, with pre-bookings essential. To RSVP, contact SCEC on 5441 5747 or email executive@scec.org.au with your details. The Take Action for Pumicestone Passage (TAPP) group are concerned about the possible unacceptable impacts the development may have on the health of the Pumicestone Passage. To this end, they have commenced an on-line petition asking the State Government to reject Halls Creek as a possible urban development area. The petition can be found and signed at www. communityrun.org/petitions/reject-halls-creek-asan-identified-growth-area-on-the-sunshine-coast

Maleny NBN meeting causes excitement and concern by Greg Brown A public meeting was held last Wednesday at the Maleny Community Centre looking at the future of internet access across the Maleny plateau. Over the evening an estimated 200 people passed through the room, looking at the displays on offer, talking with and listening to, the NBN Co representatives. Although a consensus amongst those attending would have been that everyone agrees much better internet access and speeds are desperately needed across the Range, there remain a number of

C afe

y

e rk w K

uncertainties surrounding the roll-out of the NBN. Expecting to be shown detailed material on what was planned for Maleny and surrounds, many locals appear to have been disappointed with the lack of information. “There was no new information … just blank maps of the area and artists impressions,” reported one attendee. As with many things ‘Maleny’, the meeting ran a little ‘off-centre’ and not quite as the organisers had anticipated. In an unexpected change to the advertised order of agenda, a question and answer session – tactfully facilitated by Mal Brough – was brought forward by an hour and a half after participants protested that not enough time was originally allocated. The variation to the agenda caused some consternation, with some not taking kindly to the perceived railroading of the meeting. Others were not happy at arriving later to find the question and answer session completed early. Key areas of concern raised over the evening included the possible health implications

caused by the microwave radiation emitted from the towers; the negative visual impact for residents and tourists from the 30-40 metre towers across the landscape; the impacts on real estate property values and desirability for the lands surrounding the towers; the reliability (or otherwise) of the microwave wireless technology; and the inequity between those receiving the superior fibre cable broadband compared to those receiving the lesser wireless network. One bright spot – apart from the useful discussions – was that NBN committed to running a series of future community meetings and that the Maleny issue would be “… discussed directly with Minister for Communications”, was another comment from the meeting. According to discussions GCNews has had with NBN Co liaison staff, their plans for rolling out the wireless network across the Beerwah / Glass House region will be happening very soon, although they would not confirm how soon. GCNews will bring you further updates as they come to hand.

Investment and jobs at risk from cutting Renewable Energy Target Queensland will be one of the biggest losers if the Federal Government adopts the recommendations to slash the Renewable Energy Target (RET), according to new analysis released by the peak body representing Australia's clean energy sector – the Clean Energy Council. According to the Clean Energy Council’s report, investment in large-scale renewable energy such as solar and wind farms would fall by 79% in Queensland if the policy was closed to new generation, robbing the state of $2 billion of investment. Clean Energy Council Acting Chief Executive Kane Thornton said that 4,600 jobs in solar power and more than 6,500 across Queensland’s renewable energy sector would be under threat if the Renewable Energy Target was slashed. “If the Federal Government adopts the recommendation to cut the RET, the nation will miss out on most of the $15 billion in investment in large-scale renewable energy that is expected to be created,” Mr Thornton said. The Clean Energy Council briefing paper – ‘The impact of cutting the Renewable Energy Target on state jobs and investment’ – shows that approximately 21,000 people are directly employed by the renewable energy sector across

On a local level, scrapping the RET then adds about 30% onto the cost of roof-top solar panels according to Ian Hall from All Energy HQ, Glass House Mountains. “This could add about $3,600 to the cost of a Rooftop Campers standard 5kW solar system,” he said.

The price of solar has reduced remarkably and the government rebates give consumers a helping hand towards this. “Solar is and will always be a viable long term investment, especially now because of the ever increasing electricity prices.

“If you have been thinking about solar, then why not take advantage of the government’s subsidy now, while it is still available,” advises Ian.

What do you get when you marry a lost traditional craft with one-off design? Well in this case three pieces of unique and valuable fibre art. In January, it was decided that it was time for the members of the Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters to ‘fly solo’ on a collaborative community project that would challenge them to design and handcraft a series of fibre art pieces that would ultimately be donated for a community fund raising project. Group co-ordinator, Judi Tompkins recognised that some members were not convinced they ‘really’ had the skills to produce fibre art of a quality that could be offered for public display (in spite of the fact that nearly every member had been besieged to ‘make me something’ by a friend or family member). Behind the scenes, Judi thought this community project would be an ideal way to let the group prove to themselves that they had the skills to carry off such a major project. Planning sessions

were held regularly at Judi’s studio. Throughout the process Judi did not work on any of the pieces, but was available to discuss traditional techniques, and design. Judi said the group decided to design and hook three wall hangings using the theme ‘Under the Sea’ and guidelines were developed to insure that the three pieces could ‘standalone’ or be displayed together. Each piece incorporated some of the same fabric so the theme was carried through with the materials as well as the topic. The members sorted themselves loosely into three teams and over the next nine months their collaborative efforts gave birth to three healthy, unique pieces of fibre art. In appreciation for the libraries support of the Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters, the wall hangings were presented to a Beerwah Library staff member, to be used by the ‘Friends of the Beerwah Library’ for their fund raising activities.

Memory jog for awareness

Embrrrrrrracia me hearties To coincide with International ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ last week, the monthly themed morning tea for residents of Embracia in Glasshouse Country’s Aged Care facility was ‘Pirates of Embracia’. There might not have been rum flowing on the day, but there was definitely some in the rum balls that made up part of the tasty morning tea. After visiting during Ekka Week and seeing the staff, volunteers and some of the residents in their finest clown outfits – I have to say dressed as pirates they were a lot more intimidating, but they looked like they were having plenty of fun.

Don’t forget to wear a yellow ribbon If you know of a volunteer, are a volunteer, or value the commitment made by Rural Fire Brigades, on October 14 wear a yellow ribbon to show your support. If you are in support of Rural Fire Brigades and the tireless contributions they make, please wear a yellow ribbon on this day and spread the word. Through this you will be giving your visible support to those who wear the yellow

coat and ride the yellow trucks. The RFBAQ has also sent every State Member of Parliament a yellow ribbon, as Tuesday, October 14 is the first sitting day in October and this is a visible way for MP's to show their support for the volunteer fire-fighters and brigades that are currently out protecting communities across Queensland. Thanks to the crews at Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Landsborough, Peachester and Maleny that volunteer their time to keep the rest of us safe!

Enjoy playing golf There are many pleasures in life, but few are better than a perfectly struck tee shot! While golf can be an incredibly enjoyable game, it can also be just as frustrating. Slicing your drive, missing a short putt, or increased pain and stiffness from playing can you leave you feeling pretty low. There are two major reasons golfers should consider chiropractic: 1 – less pain and stiffness before, during and after play; and 2 – better performance and longer drives. For a variety of reasons, including the repetitive rotating action of golf swing, our spine eventually becomes unhealthy and loses its normal alignment and function. Chiropractors refer to this condition as Spinal Subluxation. Once the spine becomes subluxated, pain and stiffness begin to set in and usually remains or progresses until it is corrected. Chiropractors are the only health professionals whose sole focus is on detecting and correcting Spinal Subluxations.

Beerwah – 5494 0499

Spinal Subluxation has 3 main effects: 1. increased pain and stiffness; 2. early spinal degeneration or ‘arthritis’; and 3. nerve irritation. Before his downfall, Tiger Woods had this to say about chiropractic … … “seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis has made me a better golfer. I’ve been going to a chiropractor for as long as I can remember. It’s as important to my training as practising my swing.” Like most things in life, golf is more enjoyable when you feel great doing it and can perform at your highest level. That is how life and golf are meant to be! If you’d like to check if chiropractic care may help your golf game, call Dr Braxton at Adjust to Life Chiropractic on 5494 0499.

‘Jogging your memory’ will take on a whole new meaning for Glass House Mountains resident Nicky Bright when she joins hundreds of fellow Queenslanders for Alzheimer’s Australia Qld’s inaugural Memory Walk and Jog. Nicky will walk in appreciation of her mother Yvonne, who was diagnosed at age 71, to highlight the growing need for dementia awareness, support and education. There are approximately 332,000 Australians living with Alzheimer’s Disease. Nicki said while community care on the Sunshine Coast was improving, there was still a greater need for education and support for the families of loved ones who had been diagnosed with dementia. “If I had not sought out my own information or available services, I would have felt very alone,” Nicky said. “There is a real lack of support for families while transitioning their loved ones into care.” Nicky stressed the Yvonne and Nicky need for acceptance Photographer: Jamie Bright within the community when speaking about the attitudes towards dementia. “There needs to be more awareness and education to help normalise the condition and take away the stigma and shame that patients and their loved ones feel, especially for those still living in the community,” she said. Nicky is raising money in the hope that one day, more answers will be found through research and that there will be greater awareness of the struggles that the condition brings. The Memory Walk is scheduled for September 28 at 8.45am at the University of Queensland St Lucia Campus. Participants can complete a 2.5km or 5km course. For more information about the Memory Walk and how to donate, visit www.memorywalk.com

Club Glass House staff take on the ice bucket challenge – supporting awareness for Motor Neurone Disease Club Glass House is fast becoming known for its great atmosphere, delicious meals and friendly staff. As soon as you walk into the club you can feel that good old country welcome done with the professionalism you deserve and would expect from any venue. Members and staff are always willing to take on any challenge, which was evident over the last few weeks when members of the club and staff where nominated for the ice bucket challenge, helping to raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease. Firstly sisters Elice and Selena Freshwater, joined by Craig Grigor and Jay Bordignon, braved the elements with two loader buckets of ice water tipped over them, making this a tough act to follow. Elice nominated Aroha Mate, the club's cook, who took on the challenge and created a good laugh for the bowlers, but not before Aroha managed to nominate Club Manager Sharon Bochow and committee man Ross Mckenzie. Ross and Sharon accepted the challenge on a busy Friday night, entertaining patrons enjoying their pre-dinner drinks. It was all for a great cause and created a lot of fun, especially for those who watched and weren’t getting a bucket of freezing cold water tipped over their heads.

Strong French skills rewarded By Nadine Hammill, Primary French Teacher Glasshouse Country Christian College students came third for French in the recent Queensland State Language Perfect Competition. This comes after a marathon first place finish in a three week Sunshine Coast Competition. These results indicate that the students have continued to improve on their earlier excellent Worldwide Championship results in May, when they came 9th for French for QLD. Ebony King from 5M was presented with her silver certificate at assembly this week. Ebony earned 2,111 points during this competition, coming first for French in our College and 22nd out of some 1,400 participating Queensland French students. Hamish White from 7G came second for French on 1846 points. Hamish did an outstanding job in the ‘all languages category’ earning a gold medal and first place in that category. Emily Ikin received her third credit certificate and was congratulated for her consistent excellent results during each competition earning a credit certificate each time.

I give a moo for mooloolah Give it a go and keep the heart of Mooloolah beating Mooloolah Pony Club welcomes environmentallyfriendly horse wash down bay

New premises for W.D. Hall Accountants

W.D. Hall Accountants have just finalised their move from their old offices in Paget Street Mooloolah where they have been for the last 18 months - to brand new premises on Jones Street next to the IGA. Situated in a newly renovated section of what was previously the Mooloolah E-time DVD store, Jens and his staff look forward to assisting new and existing clients with all their accounting, taxation, auditing, budgeting and financial wealth creation needs. With over 35 years experience, Principal Jens Staermose offers financial services ideal for individuals, families, investors, tradespeople and local businesses and organisations. Open Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm or by appointment. Phone 5438 7899. www.wdhall.com.au

Mooloolah Pony Club has some of the best facilities in the zone with the installation of a new horse wash down bay thanks to Sunshine Coast Council. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the Mooloolah Pony Club is a popular community facility which has a loyal membership base that will benefit from the new horse wash down bay. “The scope of the works included demolishing the existing horse wash down bay, paving, irrigation and landscaping,” Cr McKay said. “Council is working towards a sustainable environment and the installation of the wash down bay is another step forward to achieving this goal. It was important that the wash down bay was environmentally-friendly and included a pump station and a sewerage connection to meet good land management practice,” she said. Mooloolah Pony Club President Nicolle Jolly said the pony club would like to thank Sunshine Coast Council for their continued support and ongoing investment into their facility. “Thanks to Council, Mooloolah Pony Club now has some of the best facilities in the zone,” she said.

Contributed by Mary Herbert The Lions Club of Mooloolah Valley Club Branch needs more members and volunteers. We need at least 20-25 members to become a club in our own right by the end of this financial year. We have only 11 members at present and we have worked very hard to support our surrounding communities. The donations given so far from money raised by your community from July 1, 2013 until now amounts to $1,540.00. Everybody who attended our first Trivia Night last May enjoyed it very much, so by popular demand we decided to organise another one. This will be held at the Mooloolah Public Hall on Saturday, October 11. We do need a lot of people to make this event a success. All funds raised in the community helps somebody in your community! Our area covers Eudlo, Mooloolah, Glenview and Palmview. Please support your community by supporting your local Mooloolah Valley Lions Club Branch. It would be a shame to have to fold at the end of this financial year after all the hard work our members have put in. Financially we are holding our own (and do not have to rely on our parent club of Maleny) which is no mean feat in such a short time. So please do not hesitate to join us, either by becoming a member, or a volunteer. The Mooloolah Valley Lions Club Branch looks forward to hearing from you, or to see you at one of our barbecues. The Lookout Café

Since the Lookout Café reopened in April this year following extensive renovations, the response has been really positive from both locals and visitors. They are loving the stylish new décor and expanded menu. So when I dropped by for a coffee and a chat with the lovely ladies who run the café last Wednesday around at 2.00pm, I really wasn’t all that surprised by the number of tourists enjoying the view and grabbing some late lunch. I like to think I can pick the tourists, mostly because they are kept busy taking photos of each other eating delicious looking homemade cake with Mt Coonowrin in shot behind them, or they are busy playing spot the kangaroo. These are some of the lovely elements of the café that us locals often just take in our stride.

However I really shouldn’t be smug about being a local as Brownie and I actually do spend a lot of time taking photos of our meals when we are at local cafes. And no, this is not because we are crazy Facebookers who have to share every meal we have, but because it is much easier to show off how great the food is in a photo with our stories than to try and explain how things looked. You will see from the photos below I had the latest ‘Clipboard Special’, the Jacket Potato. With the coleslaw topping it was a great Spring lunch, not to heavy but definitely filling, and also well priced. And as the weather was quite warm that day, I went for the lime spider, which as it was green in colouring may make it a healthy choice.

Café owners, mother and daughter Chris and Alise said they have already started taking bookings for Christmas functions, so if you still have to organise a venue for any of your Christmas do’s give them a call and see what they can sort out for you. With the expanded kitchen and indoor dining area, they’re now also catering for evening events, however this needs to be group bookings of 10 or more. Oh yes I can’t forget, Chris and Alise and the team will also be taking a short break to celebrate Christmas. They’ll close from Monday, December 22 and will reopen on Boxing Day, Friday, December 26.

Doesn’t seem right to me

Recently when I was at Aldi at Beerwah I noticed two vehicles parking into the Disabled Car Parking bays, and while they had the correct permits, I was surprised that the person or persons didn’t seem to have any mobility restrictions. Previously when I was severely incapacitated, with five crushed vertebrae and arthritis in my knees, I asked my doctor about getting one of these permits. His advice was that unless I was in a wheelchair or using a walking frame I wouldn’t be entitled to one. So I wonder who has done the wrong thing in this instance? Could it be the doctor not acting in accordance with the guidelines – or maybe the people using the vehicle were not the ones that the permits were issued for? Either way it doesn’t seem right to me. Peter Anderton Beerwah

Re: Beerwah RSL Club

As a previous employee at the RSL club I would like to make a few comments in support of the RSL and Sub branch. Firstly we were unable to contact previous members of the old club as we had no records on previous members. These were taken by the old club when they moved premises. We went in with lots of good thoughts and really wanted to take the club into the future. This was made hard by wrong decisions from management and all staff have felt the brunt from members. As staff to a club, it is hard to sit and watch the mistakes being made, but I personally always put the members of the club, Sub Branch and Women’s Auxiliary first. These people have fought for our country and looked after the returning soldiers for many years. As a community we should stand by them, and frequent our RSL in Beerwah, so they can still keep supporting them in the great manner they do. Not continue to put bad comments out there. If anyone had a problem whilst I worked for this club all you had to do was put in a complaint. The Women’s Auxiliary were wonderful and very supportive of my family and especially my grandson Lachlan whom they helped raise funds for late last year. I cannot thank both RSL and the ladies enough for their empathy and respect. As a local for over 20 years, please give this club all the support they deserve. Go visit them and enjoy the facilities and if you have a problem when you visit please contact the manager or president of the club to sort the matter out.

Don’t let it get in the way of a future for the club in our town. All members of the Sub branch and Women’s Auxiliary live for this club and I personally would like to see it stay open. Remember these people who own this club are our ANZAC’s. Kay Thomas Beerwah

Thank you to nurses

I have no other way of expressing my gratitude to nurses, particularly those who do home nursing. Thank you for your tolerance, patience and professional care. It’s not an easy job these people have and I don’t know what the other patients are like. But I have no illusions about myself, and I am not the best of clients. The only excuse I can give is the pain I have suffered. Just imagine what my poor husband goes through. I tell him that he’s in the firing line, and I put on an act for others. So please forgive me if I have offended any of you. If other clients need a listener, I’m available – 0448 270 068. Name supplied Sunshine Coast

Scarecrow named Baniyala Bob

By Lea Parkes When Brian Freeman of Beerwah recently got chatting with his son Leonard who is the principal at Baniyala Garrangali School in the Arnhem Land Northern Territory, about 200 km south of Yirrkala Northern Territory, they got onto the topic of scarecrows. Brian mentioned how some of the local schools have been busy making scarecrows as part of the competition for the Beerwah Charity Sports Day. So the irony was not lost on him that at the same time the kids that attend the Baniyala Garrangali School, thousands of kilometres from our local schools, local kids here have also been doing exactly the same thing - building a scarecrow of their own. Our local kids made an amazing variety of scarecrows, mostly for their decorative nature, where as these kids who live in a remote part of Australia also got to be creative in protecting their garden from the crows (which are actually a problem at the moment). Last week the Prime Minister Tony Abbott spent some time in Arnhem Land, let’s hope he got to admire the kid’s hard work as well.

Most wonderful day of our lives

Hi Everyone

O

ver the past few weeks we have run an ad / request in a number of editions of Glasshouse Country News asking people to share with readers ‘their wedding stories’. And I have to say when I read the comment made by Kathy Hill of Whisper Photography that no two weddings are ever the same I realise just how right she is – when you hear or read details that people share about their weddings – you realise just how unique these events are. This isn’t about making wedding ceremonies whacky and weird, but it is about what is important to us as individual couples and the things in our lives that influence the choices we made, about each and every element of our special day. We are really pleased to include photos and stories from two Glass House Mountains couples who have both married this year. Emily and Corrie Wharton who married in Western Australia (where Emily’s family live) and Vance and Sandra who married right here in Glass House Mountains. Thanks to both couples who have shared details and photos about their weddings, letting us be a part of your important days. We hope that their stories and the rest of the Wedding Guide we have put together gives plenty of inspiration to local couples who are planning a wedding, thinking of getting married, or at least taking the first ‘scary step’ and getting engaged! And remember with Christmas on its way, this is a perfect time to think about buying an engagement ring. If you aren’t sure you are up to a big romantic proposal, you could always wrap a ring box up in Christmas paper and put a gift tag on with ‘What do you reckon’? However, for what it’s worth, I think it might be better going to a bit more effort! In our next wedding guide in February – we will be sharing stories of wedding proposals, both romantic and not so – so if you have a great story let me know, as we would love to include it. Regards,

Supplied by Emily Wharton Couple: Childhood sweethearts - Emily and Corrie Wharton Married: May 14, 2014 Our wedding took place in Dunsborough, Meelup beach, Western Australia about three hours south of Perth where I am originally from. Our families have been friends for years as our dads went to high school together in Perth. Our families used to holiday together and kept in touch throughout the years. Corrie and I grew closer together and kept in touch and then started a long distance relationship. During this time, I would come and visit Corrie on my holidays and stay with his family, who at that time lived in the beautiful Glass House Mountains where they had lived for 17 years. Since then we have travelled the world together, lived in Perth with my family for a while, and then lived and worked in Dublin, Ireland. I then made the move to the Sunshine Coast where we now live. In the lead up to our wedding day, we organised everything for our wedding in Perth via correspondence. A few months before the wedding, we went over to Perth for a holiday, where I bought my dress with my mum and sister and also viewed the beach where our wedding would take place. Our wedding was very small and intimate with only our immediate family attending. The day was everything we had both dreamed of, and was the happiest day of our lives. During our ceremony we released two monarch butterflies to symbolise our love for each other and each guest also received a coloured balloon to release. We honeymooned in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Hawaii. Photography by Real Image Photography

Keeping it local made for a great day Details supplied by Vance Neaves Couple: Sandra and Vance Neaves Married: September 13, 2014 Many Glass House Mountains locals will recognise Vance, well maybe not in his suit, but in his usual day wear which is a Hawaiian shirt. The stylish he wore for the wedding is in dramatic ves suit a e N e c contrast to his uniform when he is behind n a V Sanny and the bar at Club Glasshouse. After a two-year engagement, Vance and Sanny married recently at a ceremony at the Glasshouse Sports Club surrounded by lots of family and friends. Initially they thought about having a beach wedding in Caloundra, however when working through the practicalities of how the day would pan out – they decided to stay local and avoid the hassle of transport and travelling to the coast. Sanny didn’t go with the traditional white gown, but chose a gorgeous pale pink frock and headpiece reminiscent of a 1920s style. The Wedding car kept with the theme, it was a 1928 Graham Paige Stretch Limo, supplied by Suncoast Vintage Limousines, and it made for a perfect prop to include in the wedding photos. They had a friend photograph the wedding in the beautifully decorated gazebo at the sports club which was followed by photos up at the Glass House Mountains Lookout - which is always a spectacular backdrop.

Jo Jones, another Glass House Mountains local and friend, made their personalised cake. Jo has been making cakes for family and friends for the past three years however she is particularly proud of this one. Jo is currently setting up a business called ‘World of Cake’ and you can contact her on 0414 530 978. The couple didn’t head off on a honeymoon after the wedding, choosing to spend the time with their guests who had travelled from other parts of the state, and the country. However, they did manage one night at the Hideaway at Beerwah and are now planning and saving for a delayed honeymoon overseas next year. Congratulations to Vance and Sanny and thanks for sharing your story and photos with us.

At Whisper Images it’s all about you

By Lea Parkes When you talk to professional photographer Kathy Hill, owner of Whisper Images, one thing she will tell you is that no two weddings are alike, so the wedding photography for every couple will always be different. Whisper Images is a small, personal, exclusive studio, that does a limited number of weddings per year. This means that when you book Whisper Images for your wedding, you get personalised service and right from the start you’ll be dealing with the people that will be there on your day. Kathy describes the initial consultation with clients as relaxed, allowing them to discuss their plans and design a time schedule for the day. “So many couples are surprised how much time is taken up on the wedding day by travelling, greeting guests and the other many tasks required, and don’t actually allow for this in their original plans,” Kathy said. Kathy will walk through the timing and get it sorted so your day is as relaxed and streamlined as possible. It is nearly impossible to do Whisper Images product and range justice by phone, email or on their website, so it is best to make an appointment to come to our home/studio in Peachester, said Kathy. This way you can see the range of suitable options which can be tailored to your likes, wants and desires. You can also rely on their extensive local knowledge which is a real advantage when choosing locations. Contact Kathy at Whisper Images by phoning her on 5494 9555 or 0409 049 074 or check out her website www.whisperimages.com.au

Wedding Guide | September 2014

Getting off to the right start GCNews asked Peachester Marriage Celebrant Margarita Priori-Smith what advice she gives couples about choosing the person to perform your marriage ceremony and this is what she shared with us. Couples can either ask a pastor to marry them or engage the services of a registered civil marriage celebrant (please ensure your civil marriage celebrant is registered). While there are many celebrants to choose from, each one has their own special interest and personality. Choose your celebrant with care as you are entrusting this person to create and conduct one of the most treasured and important ceremonies of your life. A good celebrant will conduct ceremonies where the couple and their guests feel enriched. They will have a passion for what they do, care about the role they play and will feel strongly about the importance of marriage. They will incorporate your values and beliefs and work with you in creating an outstanding ceremony that reflects your vision for the day. A couple should speak to the marriage celebrant as soon as they have set a date as legally the paperwork has to be done at least one month before the actual date. You may meet with a number of Celebrants before choosing the one that is right for you. Once a couple has chosen a celebrant, a meeting is arranged so that they can get to know each other and discuss the couple’s ideas for their special day. The celebrant may also provide them with a ceremony guide that includes examples of vows, verses and readings, as well as information on how to write their own vows, if they wish to do so. It’s best to have someone with experience and someone you feel completely comfortable with. I love what I do - I am a full-time, registered Civil Marriage Celebrant. Weddings are not just my business, they are my passion, said Margarita. I have an artistic background with attention to detail and I am very flexible when it comes to people ... and the weather. It is a joy and a pleasure for me to be a part of a couple’s special day, she adds. Whether you choose a pastor or civil marriage celebrant, your ceremony should be meaningful and a touching start to your wedding day.

I will continue to provide you with updates as information comes to hand.

Andrew Powell State member for Glass House P: 5435 2013

Support small business now and long into the future I hit the pavements in many business districts throughout the Glass House electorate during this year’s Queensland Small Business Week in an effort to spread the word about how crucial it is that we support our local family businesses. Some of you in Maleny may have even had the pleasure of being served by me at the Maleny IGA on Buy Local Saturday. No-one complained that I over charged them so hopefully that means I did a good job and owner Rob Outridge will have me back again next year. See my Facebook site for photos and a video and check my website www. andrewpowell.com.au to read the speech I made in Parliament following Small Business Week. As I spent time talking with the community in my travels around local businesses I became aware that many people just don’t realise how vital it is that we support our local corner store, butcher or newsagent so they can continue to provide goods for our convenience. But it goes beyond that. Many local businesses are the ones sponsoring our sporting teams and young sporting individuals, providing goods free of charge to volunteer groups or helping to raise money for many community run organisations. Small Business week is a great way to promote these businesses but it should also serve to encourage and remind us to use them long into the future as well. Each of the businesses I visited in Woodford, Wamuran, Maleny and Glass House Mountains all said how grateful they are for the support from locals – they simply wouldn’t be here without you so next time you are out shopping remember to Buy Local!

Win an iPad mini competition I’d like to thank all of the local Year 6 students from the Caloundra Electorate who took the time to enter my recent iPad mini competition. Students were asked to submit a drawing based around the theme of what they wanted Caloundra to look like in 20 years’ time. We received some great entries, however unfortunately there could only be one winner. That was Jasmine Keys of Golden Beach State School. Her entry, titled ‘A Modern Beach Town with Flair’ was well thought out, modern and original. Well done Jasmine.

Halls Creek / Beerwah East info booths Tomorrow, Thursday, September 25 from 10.00am – 12.00noon, is the last day to attend the last of the six information booths held at Beerwah Library across August and September. If you would like to have your say on the proposed Halls Creek and Beerwah East sites currently being considered for inclusion in the South East Queensland Regional Plan please drop by and pick up our information pack consisting of maps, FAQ handouts and a survey form. If you cannot make the booth but would still like to receive this information please contact my office on 5491 2780 or email Caloundra@ parliament.qld.gov.au

Helping our local community groups We get to meet some lovely people who come through our local electorate office, particularly through a free community photocopying service I offer to not-for-profit groups. Through this service, we met Kay from the Sunshine Girls Inc, who usually do two major fundraisers each year. They have fundraised for the Rural Fire Brigade, and this year it’s for an initiative run by the Anglican Church and NRMA called Bale of Hay to support a farmer. The aim is to raise funds to purchase and distribute hay to farmers in need across Queensland. They will be holding a Poet’s Breakfast on Saturday, October 11 at Woongooroo Estate, 35 Doyles Road (Neurum Road) Woodford. Cost $15.00. If you would like to support this great fundraiser or might be interested in joining the Beerwah and Glass House girls that form the Sunshine Girls club phone Kay on 5493 0230.

Dividing Clivias

I had a question sent in asking, when can you divide clivia clumps? According to Steve Robertson, clivia grower and seller on Mountain View Road, Maleny, the best time is December, although from now onwards is OK. But you shouldn’t lift and divide them until the clump has produced at least two flower stems. Lift the whole clump and divide carefully with a clean sharp knife.

3 things you should know when you invest in strata When you take out an investment home loan to purchase a strata lot, whether it is a commercial space or an apartment unit, there are many things you should be aware of regarding your responsibilities and rights. Here are a few that might pique your interest. You can get involved You can attend strata committee meetings and voice complaints or suggestions. If you have a by-law suggestion, it could be passed with the support of a majority of the committee, but the specifics of this will differ state to state. Reviewing the files of previous owners and those who run the building you are buying into is also helpful, as you can learn about any past issues. David Castle Church on the Rise Over the last several months it has been very dry, the results have been such that the gardens have suffered. At one stage I felt that it was a waste of time growing anything. I was reluctant to spend time in the garden to prepare the soil ready for the spring season. However the recent rains have brought a new lease of life into the area and the region has recovered. It’s amazing what rain can do to rejuvenate the soil. One thing can change the outcome and bring new hope. It’s amazing how different the area looks and the growth that has come as a result of the rain. It’s the same in our own lives, we all go through seasons where we have good times and not so good times. There is a scripture in the bible where it says: To everything there is a season. A time for every purpose under heaven. Just like nature we sometimes have to face difficulties where we feel as if nothing right will eventuate and we just want to give up. But we can and we will get to see the change happen if we just look past the circumstances and believe

that change is coming. If God looks after the earth and brings the rain when it’s needed, how much more will He look after us, because He loves us? The bible says that God will bless us, if we don’t give up when our faith is being tested. He will reward us with a glorious life, just as He rewards everyone who loves Him. So may I encourage you to not see what you are facing at the moment as if things won’t or can’t change? Your circumstances are not permanent, only if you give up. It’s not how many times you get knocked down that counts, it’s getting up one more time that makes the difference to your circumstances. impatiently. The lawyer says, "if you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I'll give you my licence and registration and you can give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don't give me the ticket." The sheriff says, "that sounds fair, please exit your vehicle." The lawyer steps out and the sheriff takes out his nightstick and starts hitting the lawyer with it. The sheriff says, "do you want me to stop or just slow down?" Submitted by Graham, Glass House

TAURUS April 21 – May 21 For inspiration and good fortune be open to the possibilities of Jupiter and Uranus in favourable aspect. This new Moon in Libra focuses on health and work and in a way that favours progress and new starts. Even if an opportunity does not appear immediately, be assured success will come with changes. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This week is beneficial to you as the new Moon in Libra sets a glow for the coming weeks in your house of love, children, creativity and recreation. You may perfect the art of creative visualisation and perhaps an instant manifestation. A lucky break, or exciting offer, from a person changes your future. CANCER June 22 – July 22 With Mercury in the sign of Libra now, awaiting the Sun, new Moon and Venus, to go together in your fourth sector that is the natural home of Cancer. So domestic affairs require lots of attention, consider what others may have to say. Compromise and good will are important. Spruce up your home. LEO July 23 – August 22 This new Moon on Wednesday and Thursday means the seeds are planted for harmonious interactions, especially locally over the coming weeks. A burst of good fortune might bring in the love of your life! A creative burst suddenly comes to you. A stroke of good luck can expand your world. Quick travel now.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 With the new Moon in Libra, this week can stir up developments in your area of prestige and reputation. Although it does support contacts with influential people, you will have the best success by considering other’s views. It’s a time when change generates excitement and maybe luck. Break old routines. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This new Moon in the sign of Libra flows so well with your air sign Aquarius. You should have a week where there will be harmony in the opinions you express to others. The love of your life may suddenly appear, probably in your own locale. Your cool exterior melts away completely under wild fire romance. PISCES February 20 – March 20 With the new Moon being in the sign of Libra and in your eighth sector this brings an opportunity to work out a financial deal. Definitely take the initiative as you can further a joint money project. Whatever form it takes, change this week is good, be bold and experiment. Thoughts focus on distant people now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Mid week we see the new Moon in the sign of Libra in the first couple of degrees. This prompts you to reach out joyfully to a friend, business, or romantic partner. Some of the Aries might like a relationship ‘reboot’. However that might only product emotional complications. Sudden opportunity opens.
