W
henever I drive past or attend something at the Landsborough Hall, I admire what a lovely old building it is, and think how fortunate our community is to have such a valuable resource with so much history! This week when I was going through my emails I came across a contribution from the Landsborough Hall – and thought ‘hello’ here is something that lots of people might be able to pitch in and help out with, and it wouldn’t necessarily take up that much time. The committee urgently need volunteers to help paint the inside of the hall to freshen it up, having not been painted since the 1980’s, it could definitely do with a bit of tender loving care! Bunnings Hardware has donated the paint, brushes and rollers, so the committee now just need some man (or women) power to do the painting. If you are available on Saturday, February 27 and would like to help out, please contact Linda Morse, on 0413 009 840. Regards,

Local News Yowie artist unmasked
by Lea Parkes
As cars have driven past Landsborough’s Pioneer Park over the past 10 days or so many of the drivers have had a smile on their faces. The reason for their smiles was the result of the handy work of the ‘Yowie Mob’ artist whose alter ego is artist Martin Bright from Maleny. Looking at the shape of the plants at the garden beds at the entrance to the park gave Martin the inspiration to turn plants into creatures with the addition of 70 sets of ‘corflute eyes’. Martin said he thought to see all those little heads, often when driving past the park, wouldn't it be wonderful to make them come alive? And now they are. "My intention was to create a bit of cheer," he said. There was a bit of work involved in designing, creating, and attaching the eyes in a way that was weatherproof and that wouldn’t harm the plants. With the assistance of a jigsaw for cutting into the corflute, black silicon paint to create the pupils, and a combination of wire for mounting the eyes, the project quickly took shape. Each eye is attached with wire and then had to be individually positioned and planted in the garden bed, Martin was keen to undertake this work without drawing attention to what he was doing, so he engaged the assistance of his

Martin and John discussing the Yowie Mob with Cr Rick Baberowski mate John Parks who agreed to work with him installing the eyes. They completed their task just as the light was coming up first thing one morning. The fellas actually managed to get it all done in about 45 minutes with no one interrupting them. Martin had some concerns that council may not appreciate his sense of fun as much as the locals. However GC&M News was able to arrange a meeting with Martin and Cr Baberowski, who said he just wanted to thank and congratulate Martin for making us all smile, especially our children who love it! The Yowie Mob is fun, creatively simple and makes terrific use of the new entry plantings without causing problems for council's maintenance crew; all in all for me it’s a real winner!

Commitment recognised Contributed by Dimi Young
Tracey Blake and Adrienne Costin were awarded Life Membership with Tibro’s Netball Club in September last year. They were presented with their awards recently at the Glasshouse Sports Club. Tracey joined the committee in 2001 as Vice President and since then has coached junior teams and played in the Ladies and Mixed Competitions. As Uniform Convenor she had a big part in the new uniform changes during 2005 to 2010 as well as running the Mixed Night Competitions since 2006. Tracey is still our present Mixed Night Convenor organising the games on Tuesday nights. This has become a fun and enjoyable Social night and has grown over the past years. Adrienne started to play in the Social Ladies Competition and soon after took on the role as the Ladies Night Convenor. Adrienne has held this position from 2004 to 2015 and also held the position of Publicity officer in 2006. During her time organising the Ladies Competition, the number of teams grew from six teams to 12 at one stage. She continued to play as well as being the Convenor until an injury forced her to cease playing. Adrienne remained as the Ladies Night Convenor until she moved away from the area last year. Both Ladies were on the Sub Committee for the club's 25th Anniversary Dinner held in 2014 and have volunteered over the years with numerous fundraising events including multiple raffles, Ladies night’s fundraiser events held in 2010

Woodstock comes to Witta
Advertisment
The Divine Divas - Marion Pearson, April Adsett, Jane Wright and Desley Cole, are planning to enter the Queensland Variety Bash in 2017. To enter your vehicle must be more than 30 years old and the crew must pledge to raise a minimum of $8,500.00 as a donation to Variety Queensland. Desley said raising such a large amount of money was a daunting task, and while they have quite a way to go, their fundraising is already underway. "We are hoping to get plenty of locals coming along to ‘Woodstock at Witta’ on Saturday, March 19," she said. Local Musician, Kelly Cork (The Rain and As the Crow Flies) has put together a line-up of wonderful local bands and musicians for a night of fabulous music and entertainment. Gates open at 6.00pm, with bands performing from 6.30pm – midnight. The event is being held at the Witta Rec Club, which is a licensed venu, so no BYO, food will be on sale and camping is available. Tickets are adults $20.00, High School students are $10.00, and children are free, with no entry to the site after 10.00pm. "We have been lucky enough to participate in the Bash in 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2014, and have donated a total of almost $40,000 to Variety Qld," she said. All funds raised go directly to Variety, the Children’s Charity, a national notfor-profit organisation, committed to empowering Australian children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs to live, laugh and learn. Variety works with families and their medical teams to make sure the right equipment goes where it will make the most difference. The Bash is staged by Variety to raise funds. Since the first Queensland Bash in 1990, in excess of $19 million has been raised. Last Financial year, Variety Queensland granted equipment and services to the value of $1.8 million, which directly impacted the lives of 16,263 Queensland kids in need, helping them to overcome whatever obstacles they faced, enabling them to live life to the fullest. There’s a battle brewing in Glass House … and feathers may fly. For years a group of majestic peacocks have been living in the area around Clearview Drive, Glass House Mountains but now council has given them their eviction notice. The number of peacocks has steadily grown over the years as eggs are hatched, chicks are reared and they grow into plumed adults. According to one resident, the population stands at around 40 individuals of varying ages and sizes. Responding to a number of complaints from residents of Clearview Drive, council has deemed that the birds are pests and nuisances, and they must go. Some in the neighbourhood are happy about this. They complained to council that the peacocks foul their patios and furniture, destroy their gardens, eat their fruit and scare their grandchildren. Others are more conciliatory and are happy to live in peace with the regal flock. These peacock protectors say that the birds cause them no more problems than do noisy dogs, native birds, and pest Indian Myna birds. They feed and look after the peacocks and the peacocks live harmoniously wandering their semi-acreage blocks. They don’t see the need for the drastic action which Council may take … euthanising the birds. Residents of Clearview Drive were unhappy with the approach council was taking, believing that the process did not take into account those who objected to the removal of the peacocks. Given the controversy, Local Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski requested that council officers take the matter slowly. “On the one hand we have the residents who want the birds left to roam free and other residents who want them removed. I have requested that subject to local laws, we pause and explore whether it is possible to meet the needs of both sides or find the best compromise,” he said. “I expect the officers will examine options for ‘rehoming’ the birds with appropriate carers
By Greg Brown
willing to do so, and to discuss the options with residents who wish to take a number of birds under their control and responsibility and apply for the appropriate permits. “I believe this is an opportunity for the residents affected to better understand the need to carefully manage non-native birds as they become wild or semi-wild. “In the end it’s crucial we avoid the potential for these birds to continue breeding up into even larger numbers and become a problem.” According to a council spokesperson, no birds have yet been captured and removed and when they start catching the birds, council will make all endeavours to rehome them. “We have made contact with an animal carer in the hinterland who is willing to take the peacocks in order to find them new homes,” she said. Council plan to make their move this week. “We have established a large trap on one of the properties affected, as we aim to remove all the peacocks, or as many as possible, as soon as we can,” the spokesperson said. According to council’s website, special approval is required to keep peacocks on a property that is less than 8001 m2 in size, with a non-refundable $191.00 fee being charged to lodge the relevant application.

New life for Upfront premises
Glasshouse Country Dog Wash
Warm water hydrobath, ears, eyes & nails,
By Tina Grieve
The future of the old Upfront Club site is now a little less uncertain with Sarah Castaldi set to open her new business in the coming months. For the last eight years, Sarah has made a name for herself and her homemade goodies, at Mary Cairncross Cafe. With the new council upgrade to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve due to start in mid-year, Mary Cairncross Cafe, in its current form, will close its doors on April 10. “On the leap day this year, I will have been at Mary Cairncross Cafe exactly eight years. It feels like I have come full circle to be closing this year. I do regret that I wasn’t able to save my little corner of paradise, but I am excited about what is coming next, both for me and my staff who are all coming with me,” she said. Sarah said that locals have already heard the news about her plans to re-open at the Upfront Club site and have been dropping in to congratulate her on her new venture. “They tell me how excited they are to have our fresh, homemade food coming to town,” she said. With nearly everything cooked from scratch, including jams and chutneys and a lot of glutenfree options, Sarah said she’ll enjoy offering her freshly made, wholesome food in Maleny. Sarah's first plan of action is to get the site ready to open as a cafe as soon as she can. Being a local, she is in tune with the feelings of the local community and has a good grasp on what people don’t want to lose about the venue.

This means that as soon as she is able, Sarah will look at re-introducing evenings, including theme nights and muso nights again. “It is all a work in progress,” said Sarah, “including what the name will be. I understand the community’s fear of losing this venue and will be working hard to re-establish evenings as soon as I can, but it will all take time.” Sarah said she also hopes the community can see the benefits of the venue being run now by the one owner. In the meantime, she wants to let everyone know that it is all still business as usual at Mary Cairncross Cafe until April 10.

Kasia represents Australia Kasia Bartnikowska, assistant instructor from San Training Centre travelled to America and Canada earlier this month to represent Australia at the US and Canadian open taekwondo championships. Kasia had to continue her training over the Christmas and New Year period when everyone else was having a break. Unfortunately she did not come home with any new medals but she did have a few memorable experiences. The US open is one of the biggest taekwondo events in the world, run over five days in the city of Reno near San Francisco. Thousands of competitors from close to 100 countries came to the event with many of the world’s best teams using it as preparation for the Rio Olympics. Kasia had a tough draw fighting the world number 12 from Columbia in the first round losing 14-0. The team then travelled to Montreal for the Canadian open the following week. Conditions were freezing with apparent temperatures some days of minus 40 degrees. She again was unable to move past the first round losing to a strong competitor from USA. This trip was one of many planned for the year. Kasia is hoping to qualify for the Australian team for the world championships and will travel to Bali, New Zealand and possibly Fiji as well as frequently travelling interstate. All trips have to be self-funded. The junior team is also excited to have their first comp of the year coming up in Bundaberg this weekend, with many young players hoping to reach the same level as Kasia.
In Memoriam of Edward “Ted” Gavey ‘Smooth Operator’ 1956 to 2016 Ted was a gentle, no fuss guy with a big heart, cheeky grin and wicked sense of humour. “Here’s to you mate….we will miss ya heaps!”

Stand up and be recognised Glass House businesses Any tight knit community knows that supporting small business is the only way we can ensure positive economic growth and increased employment opportunities. This is why Andrew Powell, Member for Glass House, has announced the first ever Glass House Small Business Awards. These awards, to be held during Queensland Small Business Week in May, will have a strong focus on boosting the profile of the many small businesses that operate within the Glass House electorate boundaries. “In Glass House we are fortunate to have over 20 unique townships and each one of these has a varying amount of small family owned businesses that survive solely on the support of their local community," he said. “We don’t have any big retail complexes so our small businesses have to be diverse in their offerings and conscious of how to compete in tough economic times and against Coast and Brisbane based enterprises. They have to deliver top customer service and be willing to change with the times and desires of their community. “Because I understand how tough they do it, I have created these awards as a way to publicly recognise their service and give them some much needed promotion. “These awards will highlight what they are doing best and will remind our larger community that shopping local will stimulate economic growth and local employment opportunities.
New officer in charge
The 2016 Glass House Small Business Awards open for nominations on Monday, February 22. Nomination forms are available online at www. andrewpowell.com.au or you can call Mr Powell’s office on 5435 2013 to request one. “A Gala Awards dinner will be held during Queensland Small Business Week from May 16 to 22, where all nominated businesses will be profiled and celebrated for their efforts in our region. A winner will be chosen from the six main business districts which includes Caboolture, Woodford, Glass House, Maleny, Montville and Palmwoods and then an overall winner will also be chosen," he said. “I know that each of you would have at least one experience where you have shopped locally and received excellent customer service so why not seize the opportunity to publicly thank and recognise this small business or staff member and submit a nomination?”

Senior Sergeant Kim Cavell was officially appointed to the position of Officer in Charge of Beerwah Station in January. Snr Sgt Cavell had been relieving in this position since the start of September last year and applied for the permanent position a couple of months later. Snr Sgt Cavell has been a police officer for 25 years, most of which she has spent with Criminal Investigation Branch, most recently as a Detective Sergeant based at Maroochydore, before returning to uniform in her current position. Snr Sgt Cavell said that she is looking forward to the challenge of being Officer in Charge and becoming involved within the Beerwah and Landsborough communities. “I would value any input and consultation with members of the community in addressing any issues or concerns, to make the area a safe environment for locals and tourists alike,” she said. “I look forward to my new role.”

FEBRUARY 24 2016
The Maleny Commerce Annual General Meeting for 2016 was held on February 9. Thanks to all who joined us at the Pomodoras on Obi for a great breakfast and for the (better than your average AGM) AGM proceedings. Thank you Cr Jenny McKay for overseeing the proceedings and also Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell for joining us. Your new Management Committee is: president: Spencer Shaw; vice president: Mark Burgunder; treasurer: Jennepher Bucher; secretary: Karen Shaw; committee members (alphabetically): Deborah Hammond, Lea Parkes and Nicole Hilton. Welcome to the new committee members and thank you to everyone for volunteering another year of your time to represent this great town we call home. A big thanks to our retiring committee members Jean Cunningham and Felicity Grigor, in particular Jean for your commitment to Maleny Commerce over many years now. Memberships are due now to maintain currency for 2016 so if you haven't had a chance to renew, or you’re considering joining for the first time, we'd love to have you on board! As a business person my first question would be, “what are the benefits of being a member of Maleny Commerce, what is the value for investment of $125.00 for the year?” First up let's cover the direct financial benefits, they include: - Our Networking Breakfasts, a great opportunity to tell your stories, hear from a range of guest speakers, catch up with our local representatives and enjoy a great breakfast, non-members $25.00, members $20.00. - Advertise your business through the Maleny Commerce Web Page (Members Only) - Business of the Month in the Maleny Commerce e-newsletter (Members Only) - Host a networking event (Members Only) - Various other discounts as they arise through the year including other events and advertising opportunities (Members Only) Secondly, we are a small town, but with a big heart and working together the other benefits include: - Advocacy by Maleny business on behalf of Maleny business - Working with other organisations such as Montville Chamber of Commerce, Hinterland Tourism, Sunshine Coast Destinations Limited, Sunshine Coast Council, Chamber of Commerce Queensland and many more, to deliver projects that directly benefit and raise the profile of Maleny as a destination and great place to do business. - Networking not only within the business community but also the wider community of Maleny, to help maintain that special Maleny Magic! Maleny Commerce is a run by a volunteer Management Committee and membership fees fund the promotion of business in Maleny and benefit the wider community e.g. the Maleny Christmas Carnival. We face uncertain times economically but together we can make a difference by supporting each other and growing business in our town and surrounds. Keep up the great work Maleny. www.gcnews.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

A new concept in coffee
If you have been into Concept IT at the Riverside Centre, Maleny lately, you will have smelt a change in the air...along with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Shane Petersen of Concept IT, and his wife, Sarah have just opened up Maleny's newest cafe, Concept Coffee. Located at the back of Concept IT, it offers locals a great place to sit and enjoy the recently renovated boardwalk at the back of the Riverside Centre, which was the inspiration for the cafe. With husband Shane busy running Concept IT, Sarah is in charge of Concept Coffee and is proud of how it has come together. She also said that she loves that it is a family affair, “I've gone from hardly ever seeing Shane, to seeing each other every day,” she said. Open only a couple of weeks now, there is already a regular stream of happy customers out on the boardwalk, enjoying the views, as well as the regular visits from the local wildlife. With locally roasted vintage black coffee on offer as well as locally made cakes and treats, Concept Coffee is open 7.00am until 4.00pm Monday to Friday and 7.00am until 12noon Saturdays.

Councillor for Division 5
Jenny has a 16 year track record of performance and priority for Division 5. “I believe that all residents of the Sunshine Coast should have an opportunity to live in a great place, have a job of their choice, access to clean green technology and have the ability to live in harmony with the environment.”
Federal election soon by Ian Hall, from All Energy HQ
The preservation of his coal industry friends no doubt was foremost on Tony Abbotts mind when he held yet another enquiry into climate change by appointing climate change sceptic Dick Warburton as chairman. Guess what? The report suggested the Government should scrap the Renewable Energy Target. Exactly what Tony Abbott had been saying for about a year. Thanks to our friend Clive and his ‘united’ party it didn’t get through. Then our friend Donald Trump, oops sorry then treasurer Joe Hockey who loves looking at deserted mine sites, gaping holes in the ground, mountains of overburden, as well as toxic water dumps, because he feels such sites are so restful and such a pleasant environmental scene. Heaven help anyone who must endure the pain and suffering of observing slow turning wind turbines which every living soul well knows are an absolute ‘blight on the landscape’. Old maxim You get the Government you deserve, and we deserved these two. But we’ve learned. Malcolm Turnbull is a different mould. He has made millions for himself, so he has the ability to do the same for us – the little Aussie battlers. Malcolm Turnbull has the vision to appreciate renewable energy that is, renewable, day after day after day, thanks to the Lord who created the sun and plonked us all in sunny Australia. So keep in mind next election, politicians are renewable, so if their policies don’t suit you, then renew your political candidate and vote for one who does suit your views. Non-profit organisations The State Government (from gambling funds) and the Sunshine Coast Council both have funds they distribute as grants to community organisations, which can be used for solar energy (particularly in the case of the State Government). Seize the opportunity and promote the welfare of your members by applying for a grant, now. www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Living-and-Community/Grants-and-Funding/ Community-Grants-Program www.justice.qld.gov.au/corporate/sponsorships-andgrants/grants/communitybenefit-funding-programs Local businesses If you open your business in the day then you could get free electricity to operate your business because solar works in the day – just like you. No cash outlay, that is true. Business feature Why not phone Karen at 5438 7200 to find out how.
20+ years of saving on your electricity bill The solution is as easy as 1, 2, 3 STEP 1: SOLAR (have solar already … move to Step 2) Get 4 FREE panels included when you purchase a 5kW solar system – call and ask for our “4+ package deal” STEP 2: ADD BATTERY STORAGE Latest Technology in battery storage with Samsung Store and Save. Neighbourhood Centres welcome volunteers
@ 2 & 16 MARCH
When volunteers give their time at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, they gain much more than what meets the eye. The Centre is looking for new volunteers to join the friendly team and make a positive difference in the local community. Neighbourhood Centre volunteer Mel, said the Centre has been positive for her, particularly since challenges in her life have affected what she can do. “After a medical condition stopped me a few years ago from doing almost everything, including running my own business, I got bored sitting around all the time. I started looking into things I would be able to do, which led me to a placement at the Neighbourhood Centre. “I don’t live in Glass House but am local to the area. The Neighbourhood Centre is a not-for-profit organisation with limited funding and is run completely by volunteers like me who donate their time to keep it running for the local community. Mel said she has enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere and opportunities at the Centre. “The team are really wonderful and make everyone feel welcome. They have provided training and guidance for work in the office and emergency response procedures. They even encourage their volunteers to engage in ongoing training and development courses provided by other organisations. There are a variety of volunteer roles available at the Neighbourhood Centre for anyone who may be interested in giving it a go. The Centre is particularly seeking people with secretarial skills who can use a computer and is happy making phone calls. Other areas for volunteers include new community initiatives, fundraising, promotions, events and governance. Anyone interested in volunteering at the Neighbourhood Centre can pop in and have a chat with the friendly volunteers at the Neighbourhood Centre or phone 5438 7000. The Centre is open Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 12.00noon and located in Ryan Street, across from the Post Office. All welcome.

Sheree immediately loved our property, reassessed the marketing, and did everything she could to highlight our property and place it in view of those who would love it and buy it. I had never imagined any Real Estate agent would insert furniture into the property, make sure the lawns were mowed, and then hold the open houses, make a movie of our property, and actually sell it rather than wait around for a buyer. Because sell it she did! We cannot emphasise how much of a relief it was to have a true professional look after the listing and actual sale of our property. If you have any Real Estate for sale and desire an honest assessment and effort, we suggest you save yourself time and heartache and highly recommend Sheree to get the job done.” Rob Shackleford - Owner 430-436 Blackall Range Road, West Woombye

Violin virtuoso returns to Maleny Attilla Sautov, returns from an inspiring tour of Italy, to present a uniquely intimate solo concert in Maleny on Sunday, February 28 at the Uniting Church. This will be Attilla’s first ever unaccompanied violin tour which is in stark contrast to his recent ‘rock’ concerts. He will demonstrate great mastery of solo works by Paganini and Bach, including Bach’s Chaconne (from Partita No. 2 in D minor), a structurally and emotionally powerful piece. Attilla will also perform three of Paganini’s Caprices, and Attilla’s own arrangement of ‘Paganiniana’, (variations on themes of Paganini by Nathan Milstein). These pieces reveal the incredible acrobatics that Paganini inflicted on aspiring violinists, but which Attilla conquers with apparent ease: left hand pizzicato, ricochet arpeggios, double and triple stops, parallel octaves and tenths, and impressively fast scales. Attilla’s impressive mastery of the violin often creates the illusion of hearing more than one instrument. He will also perform duets by Henryk Wieniawski (Etudes-Caprices, No 18) and Johann Sebastian Bach, accompanied by a second violin, played by Anna Moores. Attilla performs with great passion and warmth, and with breathtaking technique. “Attilla is a genius - his passion for the violin is amazing,” said one concert goer recently. He has a trademark rapport with his audience, who are often left speechless by his talents, and loves bringing his musical gifts to regional communities, despite having vast experience in many of the world’s most prestigious venues. “I really enjoy coming out to small towns and performing to audiences who otherwise may not get to experience shows like this, given the distance to the large concert halls in the big cities,” Attilla said. “And the people in small towns are always so welcoming,” he added. This concert is an opportunity to experience the pure ‘organic sound’ of the violin at the hands of a maestro. Tickets are available at the Maleny Visitor Information Centre orwww.attillasautov.com. (Adult tickets $30.00, concession $25.00).

Contributed by Pauline Clarke Our social outing to Caloundra on February 3 commenced with morning tea at La Promenade café on the Esplanade. After a catch up with friends we moved on to the Art Gallery to view the very impressive ‘Black & White’ exhibition. A few ladies then rounded the morning off with a touch of ‘op shopping’. The guest speaker at our monthly lunch meeting on Wednesday, February 17 was Kathryn Rock, a chiropractor with a practice on the Sunshine Coast. Kathryn had everyone doing exercises and then explained about the ‘chemical, physical, emotional’ triangle and the importance of posture. So now we are all trying to eat well, move well, be happy and relaxed. Our next outing on Wednesday, March 2 is to Sunshine Melodies at the Caloundra Events Centre where the entertainer will be Lonnie Lee. We meet at Beerwah library for car-pooling at 9.15am. Our guest speaker at our next monthly lunch meeting at the Glass House Sports Club on Wednesday, March 16 will be Maz Schirman from the Institute for Women. Arrive at 11.00am for an 11.30am start. We always welcome new members; just turn up to one of our meetings or outings. View Clubs throughout Australia have 17,000 members and are a part of the Smith Family. We support Smith Family activities and in the Glass House Club we pay particular attention to the ‘Learning for Life’ program. We are only a small club but we already provide financial support to four under privileged children to assist in their education from primary through to tertiary schooling.

The ups and downs of Cholesterol by Emily Banks, Naturopath Cholesterol is an essential fat found in the bloodstream. Its two great roles in the body include the formation of cell membrane structures and its involvement in hormone production. Cholesterol is carried around in lipoproteins ("lipo" meaning fat proteins). There are good and bad cholesterols. Good cholesterol (high density lipoproteins) is protective to your cardiovascular system, while bad cholesterol (low density lipoproteins) is inflammatory and increases your risk of heart disease. Heart disease can take a long time to develop (around 65 years), but elevated cholesterol increases your risk (as does smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity). The good news is – time is on your side. Diseases do not happen overnight. With the right information and guidance, there is no reason anyone has to live with high cholesterol and suffer associated risks. Here are 5 simple tips to reduce cholesterol: 1. Reduce saturated fat. The importance of this dietary factor cannot be stressed enough! This means cutting out cakes, chips, burgers, creams – anything you would find in a bakery is a no-go. 2. Exercise regularly. Exercising for just 30 minutes a day can help to decrease fat and strengthen your cardiovascular system. 3. Address liver health. Pathology will reveal damage or inflammation to the liver, although the liver can be stressed for some time before this occurs. A Naturopath may be able to assist in improving liver health. 4. Herbal support. A qualified herbalist is your best option to dispense a quality, personalised herbal. 5. Look for hidden causes. Have you had your thyroid tested? This can be a potential underlying cause of cholesterol issues. Naturopathy offers a holistic approach to bring your cholesterol back into healthy balance.

Last week the Principal of Beerburrum State School, Shirley Francis, received a cheque for $1,000.00 which will be used by the school to buy library books to enhance the reading focus the school has for the students. Each book purchased will have a certificate attached to the inside cover acknowledging that it was purchased through the donation by the social club. Social Club president Garry Cavanagh said the club would like to acknowledge the great support they receive from Beerwah Discount Tyres and Batteries and Barry Family Butchers – both of whom make contributions towards the weekly raffle prizes. Each week there are four prizes on offer including three Barry Family Butcher's meat trays and a voucher from Beerwah Discount Tyres and Batteries.

Local Government Election 2016 Know Your Candidate
Council contest continues Campaigning for the Council Elections is in full swing. Even though the poll date is still a few weeks away, Glasshouse Country and Maleny News will continue to bring you quality information to help you choose the Divisional Councillor and the Mayoral candidates that you feel will best serve the community. This week we feature the candidates vying for Division 5 and those wishing to become Mayor. At the March 19 election, you will be given two Local Government voting forms. One will be to vote for your Divisional Councillor. The other will be to vote for the Mayor. If you’re unsure which Division you live in, you can see a map on the Council website (www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au) – click on ‘Council’, then ‘Mayor and Councillor’, and then ‘Elections’. There you’ll find a host of information on the upcoming election, including the maps of each Division. Within the GC&M News readership, Division 5 takes in part of Glenview, part of Mooloolah, Diamond Valley, part of Landsborough, part of Bald Knob, Eudlo, Palmwoods, Woombye, Hunchy, Montville, Flaxton, North Maleny, Maleny, Witta, Reesville, Booroobin, Wootha, part of Obi Obi, part of Kidaman Creek, Elaman Creek, Curramore, Cambroon and Conondale. Your enrolment address will dictate which Council Division you are in and so which candidates you have to choose from. So if you’re unsure, check the Council website or call them on 5475 7272. Voting for the Mayor is different, as it encompasses the whole of the Sunshine Coast. So everybody on the Sunshine Coast chooses from the same list of Mayoral candidates. Voting is compulsory and uses the optional preferential system. This is where you number the candidates in order from your most preferred (number 1) down to your least preferred. Optional preferential means you can number one candidate, some of the candidates or all candidates on your ballot form. By numbering only one candidate (or some but not all candidates), you forgo your right to choose who else you would prefer to win the election if your chosen candidate(s) doesn’t. This is called exhausting your preferences and can mean your vote may not be counted in the final determination of who wins. Numbering all the candidates is the most powerful way to use your democratic right and ensures that you have a say right to the very end.

The key to a successful council is through ‘Empowerment of people in the community’; a major goal for me will be maximising community involvement so the community is empowered in the governance of the Sunshine Coast. My focus also includes ensuring good governance, accountability and transparency, and working well with state and federal governments. Hinterland focus will be broad including the preservation of our unique towns and environment, supporting small business and farming, creating opportunity for niche tourism and exports. I am passionate about responsible development providing community and sporting facilities, that blend with, and enhance our towns. As a nurse I worked in acute care before moving into project management running government funded projects. I moved into radiation oncology before taking up roles in the community care sector. My most recent nursing role was Operations Manager for ‘In home’ care from Brisbane South to Townsville. Through my nursing I have gained an in-depth understanding of how important supportive communities, good town design, and adequate services and facilities are to community health and the ability for people to remain independent as they age. I have recently taken a break to travel with my husband across the Top End to photograph more than 30 species of cycads in habitat. With a keen interest in history and culture, I have travelled extensively throughout Australia; experiencing towns, cities, and rural areas that have successfully preserved environment, history, culture, tradition, art, and buildings that are now top tourist destinations and great places to live. I live with my husband Bret in Palmwoods; over the past three years we have renovated the historical house built in 1923 by Walter and Jane Collins, who owned the Palmwoods General Store. Our children and grandchildren live on the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, and in Brisbane. I am running a self-funded ‘Green’ campaign and rely on those who believe in me to spread the message using electronic media and email. I request any donations you may normally make to a candidate instead go to a charity that will benefit those who need help most in our local community.
I’m your Greens candidate for Division 5 in the upcoming Sunshine Coast Council Election. Born at Tara Queensland, I was raised on a sheep and wheat property, later moving to Toowoomba with my parents, where I started work at the local Commonwealth Bank when I was 15. During these years, family holidays were always spent at the Sunshine Coast visiting cousins. I fell in love with the coast so much, I decided to move here permanently in 1983. Continuing to work at the Commonwealth Bank in varied positions including Loans Officer and Assistant Manager, I resigned after 23 years service to pursue self-employment as a part owner, and accounts manger of a successful local small business. I have lived in Division 5 at Ilkley for the past 15 years with my family, including two children, a daughter and son, who are now young adults. In 2012, I was appointed to the Management Committee (as Treasurer) of the local Environment Council. During this time, I have become increasingly aware of Local Government issues, and this has prompted me to stand in Division 5. Being a small business owner, I am concerned about the lack of accountability and transparency in council, and I want to put a stop to donations by vested interests. Because of this, I welcome the Organisation of Sunshine Coast Associations of Residents (OSCAR) Voluntary Disclosure Initiative (www.disclosure.oscar.org.au). Good sustainable development with long term planning, and genuine community consultation that puts people first, is a primary issue for me. It is imperative that the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme adopted in May 2014 is adhered to. Increased investment in public and active transport across the hinterland to improve connectivity, and encourage participation, is also a priority. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, bushwalking, and adventure holidays. The highlight to date has been walking the Kokoda Track as a tribute to my late father who served there in WW2. It’s time for change. I believe that my experience working initially as an employee in a large organisation, and then being a small business owner, as well as an active member of the community, has given me the experience, knowledge and ability to be a fresh new voice for Division 5.

5th generation family of the Sunshine Coast Division 5. I am 28 and single. I have had full time involvement in small businesses, saw mill and earthmoving. I understand that income should outweigh spending and loans should be a last resort. Motivation I am motivated to be Councillor by witnessing shortcomings that the Council executive has displayed. This has driven and given me the determination to truly deliver Responsible Respectful Representation to the whole of Div 5 and at Council. I offer: Responsible, Respectful Representation. Responsible - to the individual, the family and to small business, for they have the least voice. Respectful - a well-paid divisional representative or their staff being arrogant is unacceptable. Similarly, the council must respect the nation’s history, service, bravery and sacrifice by that of the armed forces inclusive of the ANZACs. Representation - to deliver democratic representation. These are the building blocks of sustainability, confidence, strength, security and socially forms the most desirable regions in which to live. Excellent location I live at the back of Division 5. I travel right across the Division for basically everything I do, thus keeping me abreast of, and making me accessible to, the whole Division. Value for rate dollar Approximately one third of the rates are supposedly allocated to infrastructure (roads and bridges). I know of dangerous dirt roads and flood ways that have remained unchanged since the mid 1900’s. How can one explain to life residents of those areas who have always paid top dollar rates, that there is balance and fairness, where they have paid for bitumen and bridges but do not have them? Top dollar rates deserve something reasonable in return, otherwise there is reason for rate reduction. These are the core issues of my submission to you. I believe that Responsible Respectful Representation will produce fair and balanced Local Government.
$588M annual budget...1800 full time employees… 4th largest local government region in Australia…diverse communities with differing needs – these are just some of the challenges facing local government today. Division 5 is one of the largest rural divisions in this Shire, so how does one representative keep the ‘local’ in local government and be a grassroots representative whilst balancing the regional responsibilities that face us today? By sheer hard-work, long-hours, travelling thousands of kilometres, attending hundreds of community meetings; balanced with portfolio responsibilities and community service, offering a listening ear and having a strong commitment to ‘giving everyone a fair hearing’. In past decades, the focus was on roads, rates and rubbish. Today these issues are just as important as they set the tone for the region, but growth has dictated that we now also concentrate on building stronger, healthier communities which brings social, cultural and diverse challenges. Local government frames the lifestyle enjoyed through social policies to homelessness, heritage to acquisition and preservation of valuable habitat and environment reserves. Through Sport and Recreation to partnering with the Sunshine Coast University in research and technology; job creation; creative industries; innovation of waste disposal, reduction of waste initiatives to Solar Farms – protecting the environment and reducing costs to ratepayers. Our council has the largest community grant budget in Australia; shouldering its responsibilities in supporting rural futures, public transport, Community Cabs and fighting for our share of tourism dollars – and if this is not enough, planning for the future of our generations to come. The ramification of an increased population is the need for infrastructure and services; we need better road networks, enhanced cycling, horse and walking tracks, an ability to lobby governments for basic infrastructure, duplication of rail lines and better public transport options. Not one passion can come to fruition without the support of a team of like-minded Councillors. I have demonstrated through my professional life the ability to listen and act on community issues and help to plan long term for our regional needs. I am passionate about being a part of a team that have the knowledge and ability to plan for our future growth and move us forward in a sustainable way that allows us to keep our identity and continue to preserve our lifestyle.
My pledge is … Responsible Respectful Representation I am offering something new, different and fresh. The irony is, it is not. I want a representative democracy. Representation. Where the voice of the individual, the family and small business is heard alongside of, and equal to, that of the billionaire. Democracy, the same. Where the vote of the individual, the family and small business is alongside of, and equal to, that of big business. My focus is the social foundation of this region. From a strong foundation, the most is possible. From the foundation of true democratic representation grows confidence, strength, unity, stability, security and sustainability. Quasi dictatorships for example, are like a flare. The flare burns bright but does not last. It is based on strength that is already there and then burns it to nothing. Flashy expenditure and promises burn the social foundation. The fabric of society are ignored and treated with arrogance, secrecy and disrespect. I, like many others in this Sunshine Coast Region, would not normally have run for this position. But I have witnessed this sitting Council executive act against the wishes of a whole community by arrogantly disrespecting our Nations Heroes the ANZACs. I was so taken aback by this disrespect I was compelled to stand for … Responsible Respectful Representation

I have been working with local Government all my adult life and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for my contribution to Community and Education. Being a mover and shaker on the Sunshine Coast for the past 40 years, my vision is to support the development of clean, green and clever industries to showcase the Sunshine Coast as a global example of architectural, environmental and social sustainability for generations to come. Living on a 12 acre rural property, I encourage a land-for-wildlife philosophy where people and nature can live cohesively. Over many years I have promoted the Sunshine Coast hinterland region as an escape destination for our city and coastal counterparts to explore the hinterland's unique cottage, accommodation, gallery, winery, rural and agricultural industries. As a woman with enthusiasm, energy and vision, my track record of success in initiating and driving some of the Coast’s premier projects, including the University of the Sunshine Coast, is testament to my tenacious approach. Residents of the Sunshine Coast should have every opportunity to reach their full potential – developing and thriving in a happy, wholesome and sustainable environment. I particularly want to see more women with vision in Government with the caring attributes which include respecting the input of community groups and organisations who work tirelessly for what they believe in. Open, honest and accountable governance supported by community consultation is the key to our long term future. One of my current projects is the multimillion dollar Arts, Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Centre which I am fighting to make a reality, a cause which I have been leading for nearly two decades. It has such huge significance for current and future generations in providing an economic powerhouse for the Sunshine Coast as well as adding a long-awaited regional cultural heart to our city centre. Without this facility, I believe we shall remain culturally and socially impoverished and economically restrained.

I’ve put up my hand to stand for Mayor in The Sunshine Coast Council election for The Greens. As a Sunshine Coast business consultant, coach and nature conservation volunteer, I believe that I can make a difference in local government having a passion for people from different communities and a love of the natural environment. This leads to my vision for The Sunshine Coast of nature and community connected and sustained. I have experience chairing and serving on boards of management, reviews in vocational education, public administration, community groups and professional associations. I believe that effective governance and culture change is required in Council to improve accountability, transparency and community participation. My views align well with The Greens' principles of grass roots democracy, ecological sustainability, peace and non-violence and social justice. The greater emphasis by The Greens on economic sustainability and a balanced approach to development will support prosperity and the growth of green jobs and skills on the Sunshine Coast. Environmentally, the Sunshine Coast faces many challenges in the coming years. Development pressures, population growth, loss of habitat, and climate change, to name just a few. Because of this, I am keen to help the Sunshine Coast keep its green edge, sustaining a wonderful, natural environment and sense of community. I believe that, by preserving our green assets, opportunities will flourish in areas like agribusiness, organic farming, eco-tourism and natural health services. Also, by being a clean and green expanded community and sporting services, this will help to ensure that the lifestyle, health and wellbeing of our people is world famous. I have facilitated a plan for 'Building a Progressive Region' after a Green Ideas survey, a conference and conversations with communities and business. I have continued to build the plan, most recently visiting Glass House and Beerwah. I look forward to invitations from individuals and groups to get further input of issues for the Glass House and Maleny district and communities. If you would like to share your ideas for the future of the Sunshine Coast contact me by emailing tony.gibson@qld.greens.org.au or ‘Like’ my Facebook page Tonygibsonformayor

The Hinterland is a major part of what makes the Sunshine Coast so beautiful and I am committed to keeping it that way. As your Mayor, I have worked closely with the Hinterland councillors to deliver major projects locally like the Beerwah streetscaping, the Mary Grigor Centre at Glass House Mountains and the Maleny Golf Club. We have also expanded our conservation properties at London Creek and Bald Knob so these important habitat areas are preserved. I am offering Real Leadership and a Real Vision for the Sunshine Coast–one that your Council can and is delivering for our residents today and in the future. My plan for the next four years builds on the strong foundations we have laid in the last four years. Thousands of new jobs will be created from some of our region’s major projects like the new city centre at Maroochydore, the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the expansion of our Airport. I will be actively encouraging new businesses to invest right across our region – which means more jobs locally and more of our residents – particularly our young people – can remain on the Sunshine Coast. I will also encourage Visit Sunshine Coast to develop a dedicated marketing campaign for the Hinterland in key international tourism markets – which means more money being spent in our local communities and more jobs. Improving the rail line to Brisbane will also open up enormous opportunities for the Hinterland. I will not rest until we get firm commitments from the State and Commonwealth governments to make this a reality. Council will also play its part in improving local facilities and I am committing a further $30 million for sport, recreation and community facilities across the region. This will help to ensure the hard work that has gone into projects like the Maleny Sport and Recreation Plan bears fruit. I also want to recognise the fantastic work done by the community organisations involved with the Landsborough Historical Museum and the Friends of Bankfoot House. This is a great model that I want to see happen elsewhere on the Sunshine Coast. These are real actions that can be delivered and I promise an exciting future for the Hinterland and its residents.

School News A Valentine’s surprise
Contributed by Sandy Johnson Glasshouse Christian College celebrated Valentine’s Day by giving each female staff member a long-stemmed rose. Head of Christian Studies, Bert Kasselman, the GCC Chaplains and students from the Faith and Community team, saw the day as an opportunity to show appreciation with the surprise gift. Mr Kasselman said the origin of the concept was to show a real appreciation for the role of women in our society. “Especially in our school setting, where women are still the primary carers, educators and protectors of families and children, and they also give to the community,” he said. “Our desire was to extend a small token of our love and appreciation for these women through something as simple as a rose and a little note.” Each rose carried a message with an expression of appreciation on one side and the history of Valentine’s Day on the other. In the third century, Emperor Claudius II banned young men from marrying because they performed better on the battle field as bachelors. A priest by the name of Valentine defied the Emperor and continued to marry young couples. When he was discovered Claudius II ordered Valentine’s execution but his celebration of love and marriage endured for 1800 years. Today, no one except history students remembers Claudius II but most of the world has heard the word ‘Valentine’.

Parents
Learners pick mum over dad to teach them to drive
Recent research conducted by RACA has discovered that 96% of learner drivers identify that they’re predominately taught to drive by their parents and step parents, with 53% by mums and 43% by dads. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said it was a timely reminder to both parents to brush up on their knowledge and skills before letting their child behind the wheel. “Parents play a huge role in learning to drive and it may’ve been a while since you sat your driver licence test so it’s important you’re across any road rule changes or new techniques,” Ms Ritchie said. “Learner drivers will pick up a lot about driving from you, so make sure you’re setting a good example and not passing on bad habits.” Ms Ritchie said supervisors should encourage learners to drive as often as they could to gain the most experience. “Learners are required to clock a minimum of 100 supervised hours, preferably in a range of road, traffic and weather conditions, including at least 10 hours of night time driving,” she said. Ms Ritchie encouraged parents and learners to take advantage of free professional instruction. “Learners can sign up to the Keys2Drive program which offers learners and parents a one hour lesson from an accredited driving instructor,” she said. “It’s a great way for parents to brush up on their skills and ensure they’re passing on all the essential information to their learner driver.” For more information visit: https://www.keys2drive.com.au/

Nurture your child’s love of language by reading together at Sunshine Coast Council’s free weekly storytelling sessions at library branches across the Coast. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said research showed reading with children is the single most important activity families can do to help children learn to read and write once they start school. “Up to 90% of a child’s brain development happens in the first five years so the more you read and talk with your child the more their brain responds,” Cr McKay said. “Council’s storytime sessions for under-fives are the perfect activity for parents to give their children the best start to their life. “Storytime sessions include stories, rhymes and

Environment Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Where to begin!
with Sue Tanner Often when I sit down to write this little piece each month I scratch my head for a topic. But this month I don’t know where to begin. Lots of exciting things are happening at the forest. Firstly, council have approved for the redevelopment plans for the buildings at the Reserve. The present plan is to begin demolition of the old buildings and then, of course, erection of the new centre after the Easter holidays with a 12 month construction schedule (weather permitting). A temporary ‘donga’ style building will be erected for volunteers and staff. Visitors will enter the walk through this building and then through the back gate onto the track. The walk will STILL be open as will the picnic area and the toilets – we will still be in business. Secondly, the Friends are very pleased to have awarded the first Friends’ of Mary Cairncross Association Honours Scholarship at the University of the Sunshine Coast. We received some very impressive applications and the first recipient is Ryan Newis (BEnv. Sc.). Ryan earned a Bachelor of Environmental Science last year and research for his Honours thesis will investigate native bees, especially Tetragonulia carbonaria (the sugar bag bee). This work will see him utilising the resources at the rainforest as well as other areas on the Sunshine Coast. Ryan hopes this work will lead to studying for his PhD at USC and a future career as a research scientist. Good luck Ryan. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. To find out how to become involved check out www.friends-of-mary-cairncross.com.au or call 5435 0348.
Overwhelming community support for koala conservation More than 3,300 koala food trees will be planted across the Sunshine Coast this week thanks to the massive response from Land for Wildlife participants to the Environment Levy-funded koala conservation incentive program. Council’s Infrastructure Services Director Andrew Ryan said support from the community was essential to help council conserve and protect the koala population which has been identified as under threat in South East Queensland. “With more than 50% of the Sunshine Coast’s remnant vegetation occurring on private lands, engaging, supporting and partnering with the community is an integral component for council in enhancing and protecting the region’s native plants and wildlife,” Mr Ryan said. “Council offers Land for Wildlife members free land management advice, specialist workshops and technical advice as well as access to resources such as government grants and other incentives. “By providing landowners with the resources to manage their own land, the region as a whole reaps the benefits. “As part of the implementation of the Koala Conservation Plan endorsed by council in October last year, council invited Land for Wildlife landholders to apply to receive up to 40 koala food trees to plant on their property. “The response was overwhelming with 107 applications received, resulting in more than 3,300 koala food trees being distributed to landholders. “The main aim of the new incentive program is to increase the amount of koala habitat on the Sunshine Coast. “We started this year with Land for Wildlife landholders but plan to expand to other landholders in target areas in the next round,” he said.

Hi everyone
Nestled in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, AnnaBella the wedding chapel is the idyllic intimate venue for your wedding ceremony. www.annabellatheweddingchapel.com.au
In this wedding feature we have included stories about a number of weddings that happened towards the end of last year. I would like to declare upfront that two of the lovely brides are very special young ladies and hold a unique place in the hearts of team GC&M News. Our congratulations and thanks to our current receptionist, the former Sarah Taylor-Fox, now Mrs Moffat who married at Dicky Beach and our former receptionist Gyan Lang now Mrs Talbot who married in Bali. While the weddings were very different, they both clearly shared one common element – there was plenty of love in the air on their big days which is something that we really hope for all the local couples who are currently planning their weddings. We are also looking forward to sharing the romantic stories of other (nonGC&M News related) couples later in the year, so if you would like to be a part of our September Wedding Guide we will put the word out closer to the time.

Family wedding trifecta!
By Sonia Clark Heidi Lawrence certainly had reason to feel blessed with not one, but three family weddings to celebrate – all in one year! The owner of Eclectic Dreams in Landsborough married her soul partner Zen last December, while earlier in the year, her son Christopher Lang married his long term sweetheart Chantelle Sheppard and her daughter Gyan Lang married her beau John Talbot. All three weddings had around 60 friends and family in attendance and each reflected the unique personalities of the couples, and in a special touch, the three wedding ceremonies had the same celebrant, the spiritually inspiring Beth Dancing Free. Son Christopher married his long term partner Chantelle (who he first met at Beerwah High School) at the Maleny Retreat on May 15. The wedding overlooked the Glasshouse Mountains and had a beautiful country rustic theme with lots of special handmade touches. Daughter Gyan enjoyed a laidback beach wedding in Bali on July 1. Gyan and John met online 18 months previously and knew they were meant to be together right from their first date. The wedding included a traditional Balinese blessing and was held in the stunning coastal area of Sanur. After experiencing the love and commitment of Gyan’s wedding, Heidi says she reflected that it was time to embrace her own life and fully participate in living. She went online and decided that she would only try it for a couple of weeks, in August last year. Within that timeframe she met Zen and the attraction and energy was instantaneous. Knowing intuitively that they had a soul connection, the couple embraced the relationship and they were married four months later in December, in a ceremony that also included ‘hand fasting’ (where the original tie the knot term came from) to symbolise the union of two individuals joining their lives together.
Studio Impressions photo of Heidi and Zen's wedding
Heidi said marriage is a big life event and commitment to make in front of your friends and family. “You realise how defining it is as a coming of age ritual when you reflect back on the day and how it is also a heartfelt touchstone for those who are already married – the ritual touches everyone involved,” she said. In a wonderful continuation of the joyous rituals of life, Heidi is now looking forward to welcoming two new additions into the family with eldest son Shannon and his wife Carly, as well as Chris and Chantelle, expecting their first children later this year.

Holiday romance leads to marriage By Sonia Clark After 10 years together, Sarah Taylor-Fox finally married her beau Shane Moffat, in a gorgeous ceremony on October 3 last year. Shane and Sarah were childhood sweethearts who met initially through their families. Both families holidayed annually at the Dicky Beach Caravan Park where the couple first met as children. The ‘Dicky Beach Romance’ was rekindled each year on holiday until they officially started dating in January 2006. In June 2013, Shane proposed, allowing Sarah to spend the following year and a half planning the perfect wedding. Sarah is an extremely organised young lady who took on board all aspects of planning her dream wedding - in meticulous yet fabulous detail. The ceremony was held at Sir Leslie Wilson Park, Dicky Beach with around 150 friends and relatives looking on. Located on the headland between Dicky Beach and Moffat Beach, the spot suited the couple perfectly – being between where they first met and the beach which shared their married surname. Sarah wore a beautiful dress she had sourced on the Sunshine Coast which happily had just the right amount of sparkle and fitted her like a glove. The bridal party had three bridesmaids and groomsmen, and in a nod to the colour theme of the wedding (and Sarah’s favourite colour) the groom and groomsmen all wore pink socks and undies!

The happy couple
Sarah and Shane walked down the aisle to a Shania Twain song – ‘From this moment’ and after their vows they walked back as a married couple to ‘Love Story’ by Taylor Swift. The Reception was held at The Sunshine Coast Function Centre (Caloundra RSL), which proved an excellent venue with amazing staff and decor that was well suited to the theme of the wedding party. “We tried to make our wedding fun and memorable, which was our aim from the start,” said Sarah. “Right before our first kiss we stopped the proceedings and took a few selfies - I don’t think anyone saw that coming! We also did a surprise dance incorporated into our first dance so everyone could come up and dance with us,” explained Sarah. We wish Mr and Mrs Moffat a long and happy married life together.

Come home from your honeymoon and move straight into your own home From the day you get engaged you are planning your life together, and buying a home is the biggest purchase you will make … so you need to do it right. Our first tip is to not rush it. Research the area you want to live in. Does the area have everything you want such as good sports teams to join, community swimming pool and parks; check out the local health facilities … will they meet your needs now and when you have a family? If you rely on public transport make sure what is on offer works for you. Next step is to work out if you can afford a home loan and to save your deposit. Generally you will need 20% of the purchase price as the deposit plus legal costs. If you don’t have the full 20% deposit there are options available with Lenders Mortgage Insurance. Once you have decided on where you want to live and have your deposit, it’s time to get a finance pre-approval so you have some bargaining power when negotiating your purchase.
Then you should contact a conveyancing firm or solicitor before you start your search. It will cost you nothing to call and ask some questions on conveyancing. Before signing any purchase contract have your conveyancing firm or solicitor look over it. We suggest you never sign a purchase contract without legal eyes looking over it to ensure you are protected. You may be entitled to the Great Start Grant which is a Queensland Government initiative to help first home owners to get their new first home sooner. You’ll get $15,000 towards buying or building your new house, unit or townhouse (valued at less than $750,000). You can even buy off the plan or choose to build yourself. It’s a great opportunity to buy or build a new home, to get exactly what you want and need in a home for yourself and your family that may follow. Spend a minute or so on the phone with us, we can tell you what you can afford and answer all your questions about home loans. Nicole Hilton Business Development Officer

You Said It Keep an open mind
As a dedicated conservationist, I certainly believe we need to tread more lightly on the planet, for our own survival, and for the well-being of so many other species. It is common sense and surely the steady loss of biodiversity at human hands, is primarily a moral issue. I say this firstly because I believe much of the current presentation of the ‘climate change’ issue in the public arena is overly simplistic and misleading. It is not necessarily the environmental issue or indeed crisis it is so frequently made out to be. The point made in Peter Bowle's letter (GC&M News February 10) '..it deprives real environmental issues from receiving funds', has validity. The big boost to 'global warming' research began with Margaret Thatcher in 1988, when she was wanting to roll out nuclear reactors across Britain. She needed something to draw attention away from the controversial and unpopular nuclear industry. Funds flowed to climate science to produce certain predetermined outcomes. To a degree climatology has been increasingly politicised, pushed and prodded around ever since. Consider this: For 99% of the time that life has existed on the planet CO2 has been higher in concentration than it is today. When plants first evolved (or appeared) on the Earth it is estimated that CO2 was around 7,000 ppm compared to 400 ppm today. Any relationship between CO2 and warming is difficult to identify as there continues to be a close match between changes in solar activity and temperatures on Earth. NASA has observed that the warmer years on Mars coincide with warmer years on Earth for example. It is bizarre that so much fear is generated around the idea of a warming world when observation shows that a warmer (and wetter) world encourages biodiversity, yet cold inhibits biodiversity. Finally, many solar scientists - from NASA and elsewhere - are predicting a cyclical solar hibernation to dominate the 21st century, producing much cooler conditions. This would be more problematic than warming, with likely reduction in food production, increased drought and higher demands for energy etc. Like many issues, I remain wary of fanaticism - in any direction. I suggest readers take the time to do their own independent research, and keep an open mind. Jon Woodlands, Maleny

Issues for Glass House
The upcoming elections require some thought, especially from you, the voter. It is now time to start thinking where has our local bloke been during these past four years? What has he done for Glass House Mountains? Council is allowing blocks to be sold at the bottom of Poole Road where it floods; they directed the builders to fence their side of Poole Road where the drain crosses, however, still no fence on their side where our school kids walk every day. Secondly, our gutters. Did anyone know there was a cement spoon drain outside the GHM RSL Sub Branch? Gutters and drains are not and have not been addressed, along with mowing. Footpaths, where are they? We still walk on the road. Our main intersection at Reed Street should be manicured, the grass taken away, not allowed to finally find its way into our drainage system like it did some time ago and there was water three to four feet deep across Reed Street between the Visitor Information Centre and the RSL. I could go on, however, please be careful when you cast your vote, we do not need to know about Caloundra and its culture or art, we can look that up ourselves, we need someone looking after us, here at Glass House Mountains over the next how many years, not in another four years time. Don't forget, Rate Payers paid a council levy for local transport? Where is it? What is it? Why did we get stuck with that? One way of getting ahead, is for us to give our vote for a candidate who will stand up and fight, be seen around the place and address our local problems. Up to you, I know what I will be doing. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains
We need to manage our own issues based on local knowledge. Local Government is strictly local councillors representing the local population for the local community. So please, help preserve our local government by voting Dave Ritson for Division 1, and I'll do my best for our community’s interests. Dave Ritson, Beerwah Candidate for Division 1
The bell is safe!
Good news for reader Col who recently noticed that the bell from the old church on Landsborough Maleny Road was missing. Since reporting this in last week’s paper, we have been contacted by another reader who reassured us that the bell is ‘safe and sound’ and is currently being held under ‘local and key’ by them. It is being protected because someone indeed had tried to steal it. It is good to know that the ding dong has not been lost.

Do we want party politics at local council? A comment in the Sunshine Coast Daily re: local elections. A mayoral candidate made the statement; ‘seeking advice from his party's state director.’ Is there really space in our Local Council for candidates who are unable or unwilling to make decisions which affect our region? Do they really need to take advice from the capital city? Local elections are local for a reason.

Message Stone Readings
By Yvonne I love giving my Message Stone Readings as they are so different from the norm. The stones are similar to the ancient Runes used by many cultures but these reflect modern times and are more connected to Australian nature and the Druidic Path I am following. The Message Stones are a focus for your reading, but my intuition and our guides help with what I have to share with you. The readings tend to follow a counselling line
to aid you on your life’s journey and generally have a positive outlook. Whatever messages are presented, they are for now and you always have free will to change your direction at any time. I am available for Readings Thursdays between 10.00am – 2.00pm at the Sacred Tree Cafe, 19 Caloundra Road, Landsborough or at other times by appointment. By Carly O’Donoghue of Stepping Out Podiatry The heel is made to absorb the shock of the ground and to provide an anchor point for many muscles and tendons of the leg and the arch of the foot. When you injure your foot it takes time to recover, however the job of the foot means they do not get to take the day off to rest! Every step you take on an injured foot can lead to other compensating injuries even travelling into the knee, hip and lower back. The three major heel pain causes are: 1. Lack of cushioning (fat pad deterioration over the heel bone) 2. Achilles strain (the tendon at the back of the heel pulling on the heel bone causing pain and inflammation) 3. Arch strain (the tendon and muscles of the arch pulling on the heel bone causing pain and inflammation) If you are suffering from heal pain, make an appointment to come and see us and we will be able to advise what simple and effective treatment you require. At Stepping Out Podiatry we love ‘happy feet’. Let us help make your feet happy and make you smile again! We have clinics in Beerwah, Maleny and Landsborough, to make an appointment phone 1300 881 082. www.gcnews.com.au
Living - Arts Painting is like surfing
Glasshouse artist, Robyn Shaw likens painting to surfing - just as every wave is different requiring all your skill and a generous dash of chutzpah to finesse the ride, so too is every stroke of paint on canvas. “It’s so easy to misjudge the moment,” she said. “It's exhilarating and I know I'm alive.” But Robyn also says that means painting is never easy or merely comfortable. ‘Outskirts’ at the Caloundra Regional Gallery in March is the artist’s first major exhibition, though residents of the district will know her work from her exhibitions at the Vianta Art Space in Beerwah. Robyn knows all about working hard, she and her husband were farmers in the district while they raised their kids. Many know that farm work does not leave you with energy to burn, so you can empathise with Robyn as she used to rise an hour before the family for dawn harvesting, so she could spend a precious hour drawing and studying other artist’s work. It was her passion, but time was not available. It wasn't until they retired that Robyn was able to study art full time through an online degree course at Curtin University. Robyn, who is currently artist in residence on a goldmine in north Queensland, will be exhibiting her new work at the gallery from March 2.
The chance to go to north Queensland to paint was the opportunity Robyn had worked towards all her life – to have every day devoted to painting. She said she is walking her dreaming, and it is not an easy walk. The more she paints up there the more she learns of what she is seeing and what she wants to do with that experience in paint. “Each step is into the unknown,” she said. Robyn does not know if what she is trying out will work – if it is the right response. Every new stroke builds on what she learned yesterday, which means that each stroke is a new response to information coming in. Doing what you did yesterday won't cut it. It’s just like those different waves. This is what spontaneity is. And, while in the long run, Robyn says it brings her a satisfying feeling of being truly alive right now, it is a difficult space to occupy in the moment. Her increasing knowledge means she feels compelled to go back into paintings she thought were finished and rework them with new understandings because they are no longer, "right." That would be fine, except she needs the work to be finished, for the exhibition deadline. Also on show in the Outskirts exhibition are Caloundra artists, Diane Hunter Robertson and Margaret Ellen Turner.

Meet Cathy Lawley at the Maleny Markets Maleny Markets February artist of the month is Cathy Lawley, a Maleny artist who creates earthy and whimsical works of art in clay. Her sculptures of our native wildlife and fun figurines have found a place in homes and gardens around Australia. We look forward to seeing Cathy demonstrating basic hand building sculpture with clay on Sunday, February 28 from 8.30am to 2.00pm. Cathy runs the very popular ‘Fun in the Mud’ workshops in clay from her sandstone studio ‘Friedmudd’.
Boothrum
David Miller (Munuyar) of the Yaegl Tribe who was born in Brisbane and lives on the Sunshine Coast, has been working with a contemporary fusion of Aboriginal and Western art for over 15 years. As he says: “As an artist, I wish to bridge the gap between the here and the ancestors who are depicted by the dots, and their traditional stories. Creative expressions come from a place deep within the realms of consciousness; everyone is an artist in some way or another! “Personally, I feel as though I’m just the receiver of information which I then translate through various artistic practices. These works come through me... not from me! I feel it is my duty as an artist to share these stories by, creating images for people to connect with.” Boothrum means ‘dreaming’. David’s work links the dreaming of ancestors long lost into the dust clouds of time, with the 21st century reality of a transposed but still strong culture, to create a vibrant reinterpretation of the old stories. David has been academically trained in Western artistic techniques, and has gained knowledge and www.gcnews.com.au
There will be information on the workshops available, also information on her up-coming Greek Island sculpture tour of Skopelos. In September, Cathy will be traveling to the Greek Islands, to immerse herself in the beauty and wonder of The Greek Islands. There she’ll share her passion for clay, for 16 days, with a group of workshop participants. You can join Cathy for this fabulous and fun pottery and sculpture workshop set on the beautiful island where the famous movie ’Mamma Mia’ was filmed – authentic hilltop towns, beautiful beaches and white washed houses clinging to steep slopes in the mountains, traditional Pelion architecture, rugged natural monuments and pure Greek Island atmosphere. This will be a totally unforgettable experience! Please come and meet Cathy at the Maleny Market.
understanding of Aboriginal art and culture through traditional means. David’s imagery extends from the symbolic to the realistic. However, all of his works tell a story or impart information; they are never created just for simple aesthetic enjoyment. Boothrum will hang at Vianta in 70 Simpson Street Beerwah, from February 28 to April 3. The exhibition will open at 6.00pm on Thursday March 3 - please feel very welcome to attend and enjoy David’s exciting fusion of Western contemporary art and traditional Aboriginal art. Light refreshments will be served at the opening, and Vianta will be taking orders for a la carte meals from 7.00pm. Call Steve at 0412 312 399 to book your table. To enquire about hanging an exhibition at Vianta contact Michele on 0412 936 361 or reddoorart@bigpond.com.
Supporting artists and connecting communities The open studios program is run the last weekend of each month. For February, that will be the weekend of February, 27 and 28, from 10.00 am to 4.00pm each day. The artists participating in the program this weekend are Judi Parkinson, Wendy Edmond, and Kaye Leech. A visit to these members’ studios is always interesting and inspiring. They are more than happy to chat about their careers and techniques, and their artworks are for sale. The February Maleny-Flaxton Art Trail is the perfect way to close the holiday period with delightful cafe’s and picnic areas along the drive between these studios. This month’s feature artist is Judi Parkinson. She is a multimedia artist and her art practice includes painting, drawing, photography, videography, mixed media and writing. Her works of art are an eclectic collection of paintings, movies, photography and books however, regardless of the medium, her collective art practice usually records a personal visual diary. Judi’s studio is located at 8 Avocado Lane, Maleny

Do You Suffer From NERVE PAIN? Nerve pain is a particular type of pain that feels different to other types of pain. It often feels like shooting, stabbing or burning pain. Sometimes it can be as sharp and sudden as an electric shock. Nerve irritation can also produce numbness, tingling, itchiness, or numerous other types of altered sensation. Nerve pain, like all other types of pain, is NOT normal
In many cases of nerve pain, the problem/cause is Spinal Subluxation – a condition where one or more vertebrae have been pushed out of alignment and irritates the nerves that exit your The human body is designed to be strong, flexible, and pain-free. Life is Stressful!
Physically, mentally and chemically stressful. Physical stresses include excessive sitting, repetitive stress from jobs and hobbies, poor posture, poor sleeping position, etc. Mental or emotional stress from finances, relationships and being too busy furthers the problems by tensing our muscles. Is social media to blame for rise in narcissism? Productive gardening – not just for productivity!
Is it just me, and the stage I’m at, or does everyday life seem to be increasing its pace? I’ve been frantically racing along attempting to keep up with this treadmill that I’m sure has been accelerating for some time. However, a recent moment I snatched to enjoy my plot, made me realise how much better and how much more I am capable of achieving when I take a moment of down-time in the patch or on the farm. It’s funny on reflection, that I’m such an advocate of the productive benefits of gardening in this column, but rarely do I mention the physical and mental benefits that are so profound. Gardening has got to be one of the best methods of stress relief and purposeful exercise all in one. Another great aspect of the humble garden is the wealth of knowledge you gain over time, just by observing, doing and discussing. My children have grown in their understanding alongside me, and just today, my daughter noted some plants struggling and asked if she could do some pH tests for me. Now that my daughter is exhausted from hearing about the importance of pH testing, I figured I’d summarise it for my readers. Whilst being such a simple field test, it can tell you so much about your soil and is one of the first steps in a diagnostic investigation when your vegetables are not thriving as they should. In a nutshell, the soil pH can tell you if your soil is acid, neutral or alkaline, which consequently affects the availability of nutrients to the plant. The pH scale is from 0 (most acid) to 14 (most alkaline) and a pH of 7 is neutral. Ultimately, different plants require different nutrition and therefore different pH levels. The majority of nutrients are available in slightly acidic to neutral soils between pH 5.5 – 7.5. The pH testing can be done very simply with a pH probe or a simple pH kit. Both are very simple and user friendly, even the kids can do them. I personally prefer to use the kit for the kids, because I think seeing the colours and matching it up is way more fun and despite its simplicity, it is suitably accurate for the home garden. Overall, some of the more alkaline loving vegetables include peas, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and asparagus. Meanwhile, sweet potatoes, strawberries, potatoes and tomatoes thrive in acidic soils. Knowing all of this, then allows you to change the pH to suit what you plan to grow. The soils around the Sunshine Coast area are predominantly acidic, so a dose of lime or dolomite is usually in order before planting out many of the alkaline loving winter vegetables mentioned above. So for the coming Autumn months, here are my planting plans, ensuring I’m amending the pH where required. Until next time in Get Up and Grow! Vegetable

SingSpire Chorus Community Choir, has commenced for 2016. We rehearse in the Function Room at New Life Centre adjacent to NCC, Woombye. We are a mixed choir with some vacancies in all sections. No audition, or knowledge of music is required, but help is available for voice placement if you are not sure. We sing from a wide repertoire: folk, gospel, pop, songs from musicals, and some traditional. We are a very friendly bunch of people, who enjoy singing together to create a wonderful sound. We are community minded and do take our songs out into the community on various occasions. Singing in a great atmosphere like this is something that maybe you can try this year. For more information go to our website www.singspirechorus.weebly.com email singspirechorous@gmail.com or phone Helen on 0401 270 476.
GLASSHOUSE COMMUNITY CHURCH 5493 0596
Glass House Mountains State School Main Hall - Sun 4.30pm
Fr Kevin Smith - Catholic Church When I was a child I knew that Lent was all about giving something up. This same belief continued well into adulthood. So my giving up of lollies, sweets and ice-cream then became giving up TV, entertainment, shopping and alcohol. I suppose what lingered in my mind, although I never really put words to it, was that I thought that God got some perverse pleasure by me inflicting these minor inconveniences on myself. I failed to grasp the bigger picture and to appreciate what Lent is really all about. These 40 days which many Christians keep in preparation for Easter are really about getting in touch with Jesus who is as close to us as a prayer. The voice of that same Jesus who longs for me to hear of his love for me can sometimes be lost amidst the clatter and busyness of life. There are just too many text massages and emails for me to hear that very important Word of unconditional love. Of course if I really want to step into the brave new world of meeting this same Jesus then I could place myself in the shoes of those who have so much less than I do - the homeless, the hungry, the discriminated

against, and those who suffer the harsh judgment of others. To sit with them or reach out to them in any way I can, will indeed bring me face to face with Jesus himself. I am sure of that fact because He said so. This Lent I’ll try to spend a little more quiet time in prayer and reflection or go without a few of the comforts that are not so necessary (and in fact tend to distract me from who are most important). When I’m a little more generous with my time or money to the countless good causes that exist, I hope to encounter the Jesus who welcomed, healed, forgave, encouraged and challenged those people he called to himself. He still does call and there are many ways to meet Jesus and respond to him.

Sport Swimming is back in full swing for Term 1 at Mooloolah State School. Every Friday all students from Year 1 to Year 6 swim at the school pool for their PE lesson.
We are very lucky to have a pool onsite which allows for swimming in two terms at our school as well as extra lessons and squad training out of school hours. I believe this enhances our student’s swimming, and a group of students that qualified with their times last swimming carnival will represent Mooloolah State School at the District swimming carnival held at Beerwah Pool. The list of students representing our school are as follows: Year 3’s -Scarlett Dickson, Cooper Douglas, Lucas Gassner, and Ella Ward. Year 4’s - Jack Patterson, Ruby Pettingill, and Jye Williams.Year 5’s - Oliver Gassner, Tate Hume, Axel Stewart, Tamsyn Douglas, Alyssa Hayman, and Talia Parry and Annie Gurdler - Year 6. Well done to all of the students that have been chosen to represent our school. You should be proud of your efforts as Mooloolah State School is proud of you. Tahlia Parry, Tamsyn Douglas, Annie Gurdler, Oliver Gassner Lucas Gassner, Cooper Douglas,Jye Williams, Jack Patterson Ruby Pettingill, Scarlett Dickson, Ella Ward

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Poor granny! The family wheeled grandma out on the lawn, in her wheelchair, where the activities for her 100th birthday were taking place. Grandma couldn't speak very well, but she could write notes when she needed to communicate. After a short time out on the lawn, grandma started leaning off to the right, so some family members grabbed her, straightened her up, and stuffed pillows on her right. A short time later, she started leaning off to her left, so again the family grabbed her and stuffed pillows on her left. Soon she started
leaning forward, so the family members again grabbed her, and then tied a pillowcase around her waist to hold her up. A grandson, who arrived late, came up to grandma and said, “Hi, grandma, you're looking good! How are they treating you?” Grandma took out her little notepad and slowly wrote a note to the grandson........ ‘They won't let me pass wind.’ Submitted by Tara, Glass House Mountains

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com PISCES February 20– March 19 Your usual method of communication is generally intuitive. However, this week you have added reason to it, so you will have the best of both worlds. There is a surprising background support for a flash of an idea that could benefit you financially. Perhaps it is a technical computer purchase. ARIES March 20– April 20 If you would like to do a lot for a relationship, then you are best off showing loving tenderness now. This is not usually the best side of an Arian, however it is one which needs to be learnt this week. There is a chance that you may not be seeing another partner clearly so be intimate. TAURUS April 21– May 21 There is a lot to be said for logic, rather than passion, however the latter definitely outweighs the former! Look for innovation or a progressive idea to show the softer and sweeter side of your nature. This is not the time for the giving of diamonds or flowers, but of warm heartfelt hugs. GEMINI May 22– June 21 This is an excellent week ahead for throwing out that which you do not need and creating order out of chaos. It may be going against your grain, but it is time to look at your cabinets, overloaded with books and materials and do a big cull. Some charities love to get more stock to sell.
