JUNE 24 2015

Hi Everyone

W

With the school holidays almost here again, we have included lots of free and low cost ideas of things to do with the kids in the coming fortnight in our Boredom Busters guide. I hope if you are in charge of kids these holidays, you find it useful. This week we also feature Out and About photos from a couple of recent local events. On Friday morning we grabbed brekkie at Beerwah and had a chance to chat to Mark and Caroline from Mix FM, who were broadcasting from Ray White Real Estate in Simpson Street. It amazes me when they broadcast live, one minute they are chatting to the locals and next minute they are live on air, as if there is nothing in the world that could distract them (like the 50 people around them barbecuing, chatting, or taking selfies)? Today (Monday) I am heading up to Maleny for birthday cake at the Maleny Senior Citizens. This year nine of their members are turning 90, so they decided to mark the occasion with a combined celebration, which to me seems like a very good reason to eat cake! Regards,

Headlining at book celebration Lovers of rare books will be heading to Maleny for the fourth Celebration of Books festival on July 3, 4, and 5. In a first, the festival will showcase an outstanding collection of rare first-edition Australian books owned and treasured by local collector Neil Glover. Neil's collections include all-time favourites Norman Lindsay's ‘The Magic Pudding’, Ethel Turner's ‘Seven Little Australians’, May Gibb's ‘Snugglepot and Cuddlepie’, ‘The Sentimental Bloke’ by CJ Dennis and ‘My Brilliant Career’ by Miles Franklin. His collection is made very special by the stories that go with them, including a handwritten note from Ethel Turner to Henry Lawson. "This is the first time I have offered my books for display so I am naturally nervous and excited to see my collection go on show for the general public,” Mr Glover said. The books will be on display from Tuesday, June 30 until July 24. And in a coup for this year's festival, four awardwinning Australian authors, Kristina Olsson, Matt Condon, Frances Whiting and Ashley Hay come together in the Sunday Morning Forum to share their experiences of creativity as it informs their writing. Together these authors have won some of the most prestigious literary awards in Australia and

they are looking forward to a lively discussion. Audience participation is welcome and they’ll stay for a cup of tea and to sign copies of their books. Other activities start on Friday, July 3 with a visual arts book display and a writers' workshop, on Saturday a Big Book Club Gathering examining ‘The Children Act’ by Ian McEwan, and kid’s activities with popular children’s author Gregg Dreise. Local rare books Maleny Film Society collector Neil Glover will host films in two sessions. The afternoon session screens the star-studded new children's film ‘Paddington’. The evening session will screen a brand new short film by local film-maker Mark Newman called ‘Honouring the Boys of Barambah - the story of the Black Diggers of Barambah and Cherbourg in World War 1’. The acclaimed ‘Testament of Youth’ is the night's feature film. For details about festival events and ticket sales go to www.celebrationofbooksmaleny.com.

Beerwah players selected in Queensland Women’s League team Four Beerwah Women’s Rugby League players have been selected for the Queensland Women’s team to play NSW in the Interstate Challenge in Townsville on June 27. Jillaroo Annette Brander and Queensland representative Jazmyn Taumafai, have been joined by fellow Beerwah players Courtney Lockwood and Sarah Walker. Courtney and Sarah were rewarded for their consistency and, with Annette, also represented the All Stars against the Indigenous All Stars in the curtain raiser to the Men’s game in midFebruary. The Beerwah side represents the Sunshine Coast at the Central Division Championships and at Roma in May won the title for the third straight year.

Ten Beerwah players were selected for the Central Crows side which played against Southeast Queensland and North Queensland at the State Championships on the Gold Coast in early June. Coached by Beerwah President Steve Savage, the Central Division side was defeated 18-6 by South-east but then defeated North Queensland 18-4 in a dominant display. The Queenslanders will be looking to make it an incredible 17 wins in a row when they take on the Women’s Blues. The Interstate Challenge will be played at 1300Smiles Stadium in Townsville on Saturday, June 27, kicking off at 2.45pm as the curtain raiser to the match between the North Queensland Cowboys and the Cronulla Sharks. The match will be streamed live on NRL.com on June 27 from 2.45pm with the match to be replayed on Fox Sports on Sunday, June 28. NBN consults with Peachester community In the order of 150 people attended an information session at the Peachester Hall last Tuesday to hear of the National Broadband Network’s (NBN) plans for Peachester. Most people came to find out more on what the proposal means to them and whether it would benefit them or otherwise. Taking advantage of the information boards, locals were able to see photo-illustrations of what the tower would look like along with details of what the tower does. Residents were also able to speak with various NBN representatives. A site has been chosen on Range Road for a 35m tower (approximate) which will deliver radio frequency (microwave) transmissions to Peachester and surrounds. Although not billed as a discussion forum, Jacqueline Crompton, a public relations consultant for NBN led a late question and answer session, where a two-way robust and constructive discussion ensued. One factor which limits the effectiveness of the wireless broadband service is trees. According to NBN’s own information sheets, there needs to be a direct line-of-sight between the tower and the roof-top receiver. Trees blocking the line-of-sight will prevent transmission of the microwave signals and will have to be cleared. Unfortunately, trees are not too uncommon around Peachester. Despite that, and somewhat surprisingly, by NBN’s estimate they will be able to provide wireless broadband internet to around 95% (or

over 560) properties in the Peachester area. According to Ms Crompton, their engineers have established that a vast majority of Peachester households will be able to access their wireless broadband from the proposed tower. “Those who ultimately can’t receive the signal for one reason or another will be offered an alternative, such as a satellite service,” Ms Crompton explained to the crowd. Responding to calls for the area to receive a fibre optic system – which Beerwah, Glass House, Landsborough and Maleny townships will be supplied with; the spokesperson replied with a definite ‘not going to happen’. “It is not commercially viable to provide a fixed fibre service,” said Ms Crompton. “Peachester was never going to get anything other than a wireless broadband service even under the previous Labor Federal Government’s plans.” To the surprise of the gathering, in response to concerns that the tower location does not meet council planning requirements, and of the potential health implications of the microwave emissions, Ms Crompton said there are no limitations on where the towers can be placed. “There are no planning or health and safety restrictions,” Ms Crompton stated. “NBN adhere to all stringent public health and safety regulations and requirements. It is NBN’s job to scrupulously meet the standards set by the World Health organisations. In fact, we comply with them by considerable margins.” An application has been lodged with the Department of Natural Resources and Mines

NBN representatives address the Peachester crowd (DNR&M) to close part of the road Reserve along Range Road (where the tower is to be constructed). This process allows for people to make comments and objections. Locals have until July 16 to lodge their objection with the Nambour DNR&M office. Call their office on 5451 2222 if you need more details on the objections process. If you would like more details on NBN and the wireless broadband system, go to their website (www.nbnco.com.au) and do a search for ‘fixed wireless’ – that will bring up links to useful info sheets which aren’t easy to find on their website. If you are a Peachester local and have any concerns about the tower and would like to make contact with a local resident for help, email Ian Linwood on ilinwood@iprimus.com.au or check out the ‘Maleny and Witta/Conondale NBN Tower Action Group’ on Facebook.

A simpler way to deal with stress related conditions? By Sonia Clark Wayne Ellis has an alternative view about dealing with life’s challenges that he is keen to share with others. The natural therapist, kinesiologist, author and award winning photographer, has recently released a new book entitled ‘Kissing the Black Dog – creative solutions for depression, anxiety, worry and other stress related conditions’. While he appreciates that not everyone will agree with his suggestions about depression, anxiety and stress – Wayne who has over 25 years of work and research in natural health and personal growth and development, backs his findings with solid scientific evidence and research. Wayne suggests that there may be a simpler way to deal with stress and his book provides a practical guide to simple considerations that when incorporated into our lives could provide help in solving these challenges. Wayne asserts that there is a possibility that people who exhibit depression and other stress related conditions may in fact be deficient in water, ph levels or oxygen. He talks about the importance of balancing the axis of these three considerations and that when there is a break in this axis that’s when people get sick. “For example when we are dehydrated, our diets are too acidic and we don’t get enough oxygen,” he says. The book came about after Wayne’s body nearly shut down after being critically ill in early in 2014. He was also told he was depressed and in seeking a road to better recovery, as well as through his

Wayne Ellis holding a copy of his new book

genuine desire to help others, the book evolved. Wayne shows in a practical step-by-step guide backed by research, that drinking adequate and good quality water, adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle, as well as practicing gratitude, can assist in restoring health and improve our emotional and mental wellbeing. For more information and for details of where to purchase the book see www.wayneellis.com. au or like his Facebook page Kissing the Black Dog. Alternatively the book can be purchased for $20.00 from Aranisari, shop 1/7 Reed Street Glass House Mountains and should soon be available from Sunshine Coast Libraries.

Cooker and a Looker attracts national recognition Glass House Mountains local and well-known food blogger Amanda Smyth has joined some of Australia’s top bloggers as part of the Kidspot Voices Alumni. Kidspot is one of country’s biggest online parenting directories with more than one million people visiting the site each month. Recently Kidspot recognised Amanda, of Cooker and a Looker blog, for excellence, innovation and professionalism. She was also asked to be guest speaker at the one-day event. Amanda said she was thrilled and honoured to be included in the Alumni. “The Kidspot Voices program is a fabulous initiative that shines the spotlight on some of Australia’s best online influencers and I’m honoured to be considered one of them,” she said. “I started blogging as a dare in 2012 and since then have focussed on home cooking and the joy that sharing good food brings. Sourcing local produce is something I am passionate about and I often showcase Sunshine Coast businesses as part of this.” Amanda’s blog was named as one of Kidspot’s Top 30 food blogs in 2013 and 2014, and this year it was recognised by award-winning author Angela Gilltrap as one of the Top 100 food blogs in the world. “I focus on creating family friendly meals, not just trendy dishes featuring the superfood de jour, but nourishing, tasty and late-home-from-soccer family dinners. My food blog serves great tucker served with a side of farm life,” said Amanda.

Five years and two daughters later when the time came to choose a blog name, Cooker and a Looker seemed the perfect choice.

Designer wanted for Easter Show display

A1 Hair gets a makeover The salon is now called A1 Hair, as they know that hair is their specialty and they are 100% focused on this area of expertise. Having made some fantastic improvements, they now feel they can offer a better service for clients. The new Caloundra Road location - just down from Sacred Tree Café - with on-site parking is proving to be very popular. Owner Rachel, along with staff, senior stylist Sue and apprentice Eden, provide a professional service in a fresh and fun atmosphere, using and recommending only top quality products. Rachel suggests that you make a booking to avoid disappointment, but they also welcome walk-ins.

Each year, the wonderful farm produce of south-east Queensland (including from our local region) is proudly featured at the Royal Sydney Easter Show. Being the only district in Queensland invited to compete at the Show; it is a real ‘State of Origin’ battle each year. This year, the SEQ display was awarded third place overall, but won the People’s Choice Award. On top of that, many individual produce classes and sections won first, second and thirds, as well as being lauded with Champion awards. South East Queensland District Exhibit Inc. is a voluntary organisation which contributes, coordinates, plans, transports and sets up the display each year – a massive undertaking involving a range of talents and skills. And an opportunity has come up for an artistic designer to work with them. Col Dabelstein, manager of the South East QLD District Exhibit team, says that the designer role is pivotal to the whole display. “Each year we have latitude in choosing the theme of the display, and so the artistic designer is someone who is vital in that process,” said Col. “We are looking for someone who has an artistic flair and an eye for detail, and who is willing to create something spectacular to showcase farming endeavours of South-East Queensland. “There is a nominal remuneration for the person who is willing to design and help erect this SEQ display for the district exhibits in the dome at the 2016 Sydney Show.” If you’re interested and want to know more, contact Col on 0410 053 864.

Great Cuppa for Cancer

Contributed by Bev Smith The Mooloolah Valley Slimmers hosted another very successful ‘Cuppa for Cancer’ in May. Thanks to all who supported the day, in particular those that attended and dug deep into their purses. Thanks also to the Club members for supplying the delicious morning tea and the local business houses for donations, including Mooloolah Meats, Mooloolah IGA, Mooloolah Pharmacy; Landsborough Hotel, Beerwah Hotel, Beerwah RSL, Robyn Butler (Avon), Caloundra Fruit and Vegetables, Woodlands Poultry and Kerry Abbott (Nutritionist). As well as the stall holders; Mooloolah Community Centre and Op Shop, entertainers, cash donations and our band of willing helpers. If anyone is missed our apologies please. With everyone’s generosity and working together the final count - $2,400 was raised and donated to Cancer Council Queensland.

Farewell after 21 years

Contributed by Chris Bell Recently Glasshouse Country Uniting Church members bid farewell to long time members John and Bronwen Wells who have sold their home in Peachester to move to the coast. They will be sadly missed as they were both people who saw something that needed to be done and did it. They used their God given talents to the full and served in many and varied positions of leadership in the congregation from caring for church grounds and working the sound system to running Prayer Links, Garden Interest Group and helping at Playgroup. Pastor Margaret Niethe is pictured thanking John and Bronwen and presenting them with a huge card and a Manawee Gardens Voucher before we shared a special farewell morning tea.

Visitor Information Centre Update

Welcome to a chilly June!

As winter commences, please find a wrap up of our May activity from the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre. Our volunteer ambassadors and visitors received a terrific presentation from Dale Ilhe (our supplier of local honey). Dale is very experienced in keeping bees and producing honey and provided a very interesting talk with lots of questions and a short quiz. This was followed by an excellent morning tea with home baked scones, apple cake and damper with of course, honey. Dale’s honey is always available in the centre and just recently we have included creamed honey in the range. As part of a volunteer role, we get the opportunity to visit local Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) tourism members. During May, we were lucky enough to visit the Caloundra Lighthouse in

Canberra Terrace Caloundra. This attraction is looked after by volunteers. The old Lighthouse is on the site, alongside the new one, and you are able to climb to the top. The view from the sea to the mountains is just stunning. The lighthouse is open on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. If you have a group they will also open by appointment. It is a very interesting and reasonable morning out. If you would like Colour palette. to volunteer at the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information Centre (VIC) or any of SCDL’s VICs across the Sunshine Coast, call into the centre for a chat or ring Bev on 0147 709 157. I will be happy to take you through what is involved, it can be just for a morning, a month or weekly involvement, whatever suits you.

Environment Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Walking in the rain

with Sue Tanner Several weeks ago the Friends of Mary Cairncross took delivery of 250 rain ponchos, preparing for winter in Maleny. The following Monday a school had booked a guided walk and it was pouring. Our boss Bob contacted the school – did they still want to come? Oh yes, it’s sunny in Brisbane! The teacher tried to contact families but only a handful of kids turned up with protection. So … after some consultation with the teachers a deal was struck and 65 ponchos were purchased by the school and draped over children. Now the amusing bit – these were adult sized ponchos on Year 3 sized kids. They looked like little ghosts disappearing into the gloomy mist of the wet rain forest. Some of the guides (yours truly included ) wimped out after half of a very wet walk and provided some activities in the Education Centre while a few more water proof guides did the whole track and returned as wet and bedraggled as the kids (who Loved it). A second wet walk last Friday was accompanied by a legion of leeches waving around and waiting to strike (they love the wet too). Funny how differently kids react to a leech. Some scream and yell and jump about as if we are taking to them with a blunt bread knife while others simply say ‘oh look a leech!’ and watch it squirming and stretching. I always tell our little walkers only very special kids attract leeches and so they all start looking for them.

Council shares World Environment Day Award win

The work of Sunshine Coast Council staff has helped Unitywater claim a prestigious award at the UN World Environment Day Awards presented in Melbourne. Unitywater received the prize for Best Specific Environmental Initiative in recognition of a $17 million project to upgrade the Maleny Sewage Treatment Plant and establish its associated wetlands. Formally opened at a public event last June, the upgraded plant uses a membrane bioreactor to treat effluent to a very high standard before sending it to an irrigated rainforest and wetlands in the Maleny Community Precinct. This process of natural filtration further disperses and removes nutrients from the nearby Obi Obi Creek. “The forest and wetlands have transformed a section of an old dairy farm into an important habitat for flora and fauna,” Council’s Environment Portfolio holder Cr Jenny McKay said. “Council worked hand-in-hand with Unitywater, local bushcare groups and the community to develop parts of the forest and wetlands system and align them with the Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan. “This includes walking tracks and planting zones for the community to enjoy.” Unitywater’s Manager - Capital Delivery Andrew Schoenmaker acknowledged Sunshine Coast Council’s role in the award win with a special presentation during last Thursday at Council’s Ordinary Meeting in Nambour. “Unitywater shares this impressive award with the wonderful local community and the Maleny Green Hills Fund, who have partnered with us on this initiative.” Maleny Community Precinct Advisory Group also played a key role in the project.

The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. To find out how to become involved check out www.friends-of-mary-cairncross. com.au or call 5435 0348.

CCTV PROJECT

UPDATE

The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce CCTV project is well underway. The project is funded as part of the Federal Government’s Safer Streets programme and includes the installation of CCTV in Glasshouse Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough. The aim of the project is to cover areas identified by local police as hot spot areas to assist in crime prevention and prosecuting offenders. I am pleased to announce that the Chamber is in the process of securing the CCTV supplier and are in discussions with police and Council to ensure the placement of cameras is appropriate. The next stage is for the Chamber to engage with building owners and tenants regarding the fitting of cameras on specific buildings.

CCTV project to be completed October 2015

One of those ‘can’t put down’ books. Paula Hawkins has written a tightly woven mystery/ psychological thriller with painful secrets and startling truths revealed along the way. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and watches the same couple having breakfast on their deck. Their lives seem perfect, until one day, Rachael sees something shocking. • Jenni – ‘All My Friends Are Superheroes’ by Andrew Kaufman. This is a quirky story that made me laugh out loud, yet had a tenderness and sadness that made it a surprising and poetic read. Unlikely and unusual superhero characters such as the Perfectionist, the Ear, the Spooner and the Impossible Man take you on a journey that is a tribute to love. • Florence (Friend of the Library) – ‘Behind the gates of Gomorrah: a year with the criminally insane.’ A memoir from psychiatrist Stephen Seager, who was no stranger to locked psych wards when he accepted a job at California's Gorman State hospital, known locally as ‘Gomorrah’. • Carole (Friend of the Library) – ‘Wild’ by Cheryl Strayed. This is a read for everyone! At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - alone.

You Said It Closure of Network Video Glass House

After 17 years the Glasshouse Mountains Video Shop (Network Video) will be closed for business as of Saturday, June 20. What started out as a VHS rental store back in 1998, then moved on to DVD's and Blu Ray's over the years, and in the last seven became part a music store to service the needs of the local community. We would like to thank all our wonderful customers who have supported us over the 17 years. It’s been amazing serving and getting to know you all, also to the many of you who have dropped in to say goodbye this week, it was much appreciated. We would also like to thank all our former and current staff we have had over the years - Adrian, Fallon, Jenny, Chantelle, Bev and Hayden. With a special thanks to Nadia for all her efforts and dedication over the past 12 years. From Sunday, June 21 to Sunday, June 28 all DVD's will be sold in-store to the public, and people who purchase will go into a draw to win a great prize. Thanks people, it's been a blast. David and Shirley Magic Movies and Music

Thanks to Peachester locals

I would like to thank all the residents of Peachester for their involvement in the NBNCo information session last Tuesday. We had a large response and the community gained valuable information regarding the proposed roll out of the NBN network for our town. It was good to have Councillor Rick Baberowski present and to supply input to the meeting. Ian Linwood, Peachester

Times are a changing

Originally an unnamed shipping container was used as the Beerwah Transfer Station in Roberts Road. This was constantly overflowing and became a problem for the council and the pickup driver. Alan Christie, President of the Beerwah Progress Association approached Caloundra Council to see if they could man it, and on July 17, 1989 this occurred. Patrons paid $1.00 / bag – 50c / to the council and the remainder to the Beerwah Progress Association. Alan also arranged that newspapers and tallies were not charged for. He took papers to Petrie Mills and bottles picked up by the bottle’o’. And so started the Beerwah Recycling Depot. Stan Buckmaster approached Caloundra Council and was given a three month trial. He and Lionel, by car and trailer, distributed and picked up recycling bags in an ever widening circle. The depot quickly grew, became mechanised, and held recycling markets. Beerwah desperately needed a swimming pool, which the council couldn’t afford. Apart from recycling monies, Beecher Larkin organised a coin trail around town and Alan Christie sold chook raffles in the Beerwah Hotel. Because of these enterprises, BPA gave CCC the sum of $70,000, enough to erect the buildings for the pool. Maurice Norman organised the painting of them, done by the progress association. The pool was opened by Lisa Curry on October 30, 1993. Obviously a lot of hard work happened in four years and Stan Buckmaster received an AOM for his services to the community. The recycling depot has vastly improved since those early days, and being a non-profit organisation, many people have benefitted by it. Will all this finish in July? Ron Hills, Beerwah

Renovate to sell Renovation is one of the ways you can differentiate your home to attract buyers in a slow market, but you need to do your homework to ensure that renovating before you sell is worth the time, effort and money. Renovation, whether major or minor, is no guarantee that you'll be able to ask more money for your home. It's important to know what to renovate so that your home appeals to a large number of buyers, and that the renovations won't cost you more than what they're worth to the value of the home. Is it feasible? Knowing how much you should spend is all about research. A good starting point is to estimate how much your home is worth now versus what it could be worth when renovated. Look at other properties that are already renovated and are similar in terms of building style, number of bedrooms and block of land - this will give you an estimated sale price. Take your estimated sale price and subtract your expenses and expected profit in order to work out your renovation budget. Get some quotes on the kind of work you are thinking of having done and make a decision about whether you can do a decent renovation job for this amount. Overspending on a renovation will eat straight into your potential profit so it's important to be clear about how much the work will cost and whether it will be more or less than the value gain. Will it appeal to buyers? Focus on renovations that appeal to the majority of buyers such as work done

Not closing

Community Recycling Inc. is not closing in July, they will be working from the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre recycling furniture and other items as they have done for many years. What will change in July, is Community Recycling Inc. will not be managing the waste management side of the business. The activities that Community Recycling have been carrying out in the workshop with the unemployed, Community Corrections and other program participants will continue, this opportunity has many benefits for those participants. Kim Toft inspires

Contributed by Sandy Johnson Glasshouse Christian College was privileged to host award winning author and illustrator Kim Michelle Toft over two days this week. Ms Toft combines her five years teaching experience with five years as a graphic designer and 25 years as a full time silk artist / illustrator to conduct entertaining and educational presentations to children. GCC Primary students were fascinated to see the large and colourful silk paintings adorning the library and even more amazed to watch Ms Toft create a painting before their eyes as she taught them the process. Ms Toft uses her skills to educate children on marine life and the importance of taking care of her environment. Many of the GCC students instantly recognised some of the paintings from her famous book, ‘Tick Tock Tick Tock: What’s Up Croc?’

JUNE 24 2015

By Sonia Clark Last month in our May 6 issue, we ran a story asking readers if they could tell us more about a 48 page recipe booklet that we had come across by the Glasshouse United Guild. One reader Jill Curtis, got in contact with us and told us that her mother was part of the guild during the 1960’s that supported the church. Jill said that they used to hold many fundraisers, bake stalls and fetes – often to support maintenance work on the Glass House church building, such as restumping and possibly even roofing. Importantly she remembered that the ladies

of the guild were excellent cooks! The Ladies Guild was originally formed in 1935 from members of the local Presbyterian and Methodist congregations with the initial proposal to build a church in Glass House. By early 1939, the congregation made a commitment to proceed with the building and the Ladies Guild swung into action working tirelessly to raise funds to build, furnish, maintain, and equip the building. Even before the Glass House Church became the Uniting Church in the 1970’s, the guild functioned as a united body. Marion Beitz also got in contact with GC&M News and suggested that the recipe book was published later than originally thought – possibly some time in the 1990’s as she had one of her recipes ‘Curried Tuna’ in the book. The booklet was put together as a fundraiser and the original church building still stands today.

There is a lovely atmosphere at Vianta, owner Steve Moon has got the mix just right with a warm and inviting space that is both comfortable and accessible, yet with an almost upmarket European cafe appeal. This appeal is complemented by the international staff that works there, and it is always nice to be served by someone with a lovely accent! The cafe is spacious yet appears cosy and intimate through the use of beautiful wooden floors, panelled serving counter and signature feature wall colouring. Leather lounges and open bookcases are cleverly used to define spaces. The atmosphere is further enhanced by artwork adorning the walls - with exhibitions changing monthly. The coffee and beverages are great and there are heaps of comfortable chairs and indoor or on street dining. The menu is comprehensive and offers a tapas style selection that includes heaps of options such as all day breakfasts, wraps, desserts (many GF), quiches and fresh salad – all at very reasonable prices.

The community response to planning of the Glass House District Park was excellent. Draft plans for the 38 hectare Glass House District Park, which encompasses Glass House Mountains Environmental Reserve, Page Park, Dana Close Reserve, Smerdon Way Park and Banksia Park, were discussed at a recent information exchange with Council’s landscape designers. The event was very well attended, with good support for the general direction outlined in the draft and some excellent suggestions. Your feedback is now being collated for incorporation into a final report to Council in the new financial year. Work on this exceptional new District Park is expected to begin before the end of the year.

Peachester Road pathway

Continuing council’s focus on connecting local communities through improved pathways (with an emphasis on radiating out from schools), construction of a two metre concrete pathway along Peachester Road in Beerwah between Nichols Avenue and Blackbutt Street, is now underway. This particular section will link a wider network of pathways that lead to local schools, shops and open spaces. As budget allows - and not forgetting the need for the much longer link between Glass House and Beerwah - council will continue to keep extending the pathway network to help promote safer, healthier and a better connected communities.

Out and about

I’ll be at Glass House Mountains Visitor’s Centre on Friday, July 3 from 2.00pm – 4.00pm where I look forward to catching up with local residents to chat about the many things happening in our community. If you are unable to catch up in person, you can follow my Facebook page - search for Cr Rick Baberowski – Division 1- to keep track of what’s happening. Through this social media format I hope to offer more immediate access to up-to-date news and information specific to Division 1.

As always, it was wonderful to see the great local turn out at the latest Mooloolah Breakfast meeting @ Kenny’s@Mooloolah. And I’m pleased to advise we are now one step closer to finalising the electronic signage information board to go in Martin Rungert Park following the positive feedback to the artist sketches displayed at the meeting.

Council works with the community to quash pests

A big thank you to the community for your outstanding self-compliance with managing pests over the past financial year which has helped prevent damage to the environment, domestic animals and community amenity. However, there is more work to be done. Council will be undertaking the next round of the Pest Survey Program between July 4 and September 30, with emphasis placed on inspecting properties over 4,000 square metres in the Glass House Mountains, Peachester, Palmview, Ilkley, Eudlo, Bli Bli, Verrierdale, Eerwah Vale and Kiamba areas. For further information, contact council’s Customer Contact Centre on 5475 7272 or email mail@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Road safety—have your say!

Road accidents impact thousands of people who can be affected forever by the loss and injury of their loved ones. Your views are important, so have your say on Council’s ‘Draft Sunshine Coast Road Safety Plan 2015-2019.’ The plan focuses on driver education, crash investigation, pedestrian and cycling facilities and speed management measures. Visit council’s website, libraries or customer contact centres before June 30 to view the plan and provide your valuable input.

Your Beerwah Manager

BELINDA IGA Beerwah store manager Belinda Dukes has been welcomed into the community since they opened their brand new store eight months ago. With 10 years’ experience working for IGA, in stores at Noosa, Cooroy and now Beerwah, she understands the business and the importance of being a real part of the community. Working in the Cooroy store has given Belinda an insight to what it is like to work in a modern country town like Beerwah. She understands the importance of locally sourced produce from local farmers. She particularly likes the way everyone in the IGA team is

treated … “You’re not just a number, they all care about what they do. This is not ‘just a job’ and that mind-set has a flow on effect for the style of service we provide our customers.” Belinda knows her team always try to go that extra mile … above and beyond … whether sourcing a particular item, organising a taxi home for a customer or assisting with shopping to your car – it's all important. She really feels that she has found her niche in her current role, which includes providing hands-on training to all the staff, and making sure the Beerwah store offers an enjoyable and personalised style of shopping.

The IGA Beerwah loyalty card offers real savings and also supports the local community chest – giving back to the community. By customers shopping locally, IGA Beerwah can, in turn support local producers and employ local staff – and increasingly become an integral part of the ever growing circle of a country community. They also offer a 5% seniors discount, seven days a week! If you haven't already visited their new store located in the new Beerwah Village Shopping Centre, then please call in today – Belinda and the team look forward to saying hello.

Massage - luxury or maintenance? By Diane Rantall Massage is sometimes thought of as a luxury, but is it really? How often do you take your car to have a service and check that everything is in working order? This is something that most people do regularly as their car is the transport that provides all of their requirements for daily living. Our body also requires regular maintenance to perform at its peak, regardless of what stage you are at in life, a new mother, a grandparent, a young athlete, an office worker, or trades person.

Acupuncture

Everyone regardless of age, occupation or illness, can benefit from a regular bodywork treatment. Natural Therapies bring calm and resilience to our bodies. In this fast paced world we now live in, it is important to take a few moments of time for yourself to de-stress. Having a regular selfcare plan that fits into your budget and time can play a huge part in your overall health. Benefits include reduced stress, anxiety, depression, aches and pains, improved sleep, clarity of thinking and more energy. Beerwah Bowen Therapy

The annual Sunshine Coast Walk for Women’s Cancers will be held Saturday, June 27, and will see a sea of pink teams and individuals take to an exciting new route. Cancer Council Queensland is calling on Sunshine Coast locals to join the pretty in pink brigade and ensure this year’s event goes off with a bang! Since its launch 10 years ago, Sunshine Coast Walk for Women’s Cancers has raised more than $450,000 for CCQ’s vital work in breast and gynaecological cancer research, education programs and patient support services. Cancer Council Queensland Regional Fundraising Coordinator Esther Attewell said ladies – and gents – of all ages, are invited to don their pretty in pink finest and take part in either the 10km or the 20km walk, and create hope for every woman’s future. “On the Sunshine Coast alone, around 460 women will be diagnosed with a women’s cancer this year, and sadly at least 90 women will die from these cancers,” Ms Attewell said. Up to 1000 participants are expected to take part in the walk to give hope to the one in six Queensland women who will be diagnosed with a women’s cancer in their lifetime. “For the first time ever, this year’s walk will start and finish at Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club, with the 10km walk continuing along the beautiful Mooloolaba Spit, and those doing the 20km walk passing through Alexandra Parade and Cotton Tree and up the river before finishing back at the Alexandra Headland Surf Club. Registration is from 7.00am and the walk starts at 8.00am, entry to the event is $30.00." If you want to know more about being part of the life-changing experience that is Walk for Women’s Cancers please call the Fundraising Hotline on 1300 656 585 or visit www.walkforwomen.org.au.

Winter is here

Contributed by Melissa Cronin (pharmacist) Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body? Looking at your skin can help doctors diagnose multiple conditions and is a tell-tale sign of your inner health. During winter our skin becomes dry and if not treated can lead to irritation, dermatitis, skin cracks and infection. Here at the Maleny Chemmart we want to help you look after your skin so that we can not only make you feel good, but help to prevent any of these skin conditions occurring. Here are some helpful tips: 1. Drink plenty of water. 2. Do not have showers that are too hot as this dehydrates the skin. 3. Stay motivated to exercise over winter! Contributed by Maximise Fitness It’s getting colder and we are losing the light, which doesn’t help the motivation levels for exercising over winter. But remember, our summer bodies are made in winter! If you are tempted to hit the snooze button, remember staying motivated this winter only requires one change: your mindset. Ease anxiety and depression in just one session By Sharon Chapman Everybody I know has experienced anxiety and depression at some time in their life (in winter time this is even more so). Common symptoms include: feeling tired for no good reason, nervousness or anxiousness (so much so that nothing can calm you down), or feeling hopeless or helpless, and like nobody understands what you are feeling or going through. You can’t relax or sleep and feel restless, feeling so sad nothing could cheer you up and like everything is an effort. The good thing about Emotional FreedomTechnique (EFT) is that you experience an immediate sense of relief from feeling overwhelmed and sad. You don’t have to go into the story of why you are feeling this way, we simply allow you to experience the emotion you would rather be feeling – of inner peace. You will be able to relax and sleep better from the first session. Don’t suffer in silence, there is a way out. EFT or ‘tapping’ involves tapping on acupuncture points on the face and body (without using needles) with immediate and impressive results. It is $89.00 for an initial session or 10% discount for a package of three sessions over three weeks for $240.00.

Emotional Freedom Technique with Sharon Chapman Would you like to experience a feeling of Relief, Inner Peace and Calmness about a situation you are finding upsetting … and are unsure of how to deal with? EFT often works when nothing else will. Perfect for helping you with ... • Weight Loss • Anxiety / Depression • Finance Worries • Relationships • Career Issues • Phobias • Injury Rehabilitation • Conflict Resolution

Effective & safe for children, adults, during pregnancy & with any medical treatment.

Give me 5 for kids Mix FM’s Breakfast team did a live broadcast from Simpson Street in Beerwah last Friday curtesy of Paul and Jo O’Brien from Ray White Real Estate Beerwah. As part of their radio station’s 'Give me 5 for Kids’ fundraising effort, they auction off the outside broadcast to the highest bidder.

Plenty of locals called in to grab a bacon and egg burger and popper for breakfast and donated to this important cause. Over the space of only a few hours, they collected over $1,600.00 and the major draw prize of a 32” LCD TV was won by Kevin Taylor of Beerwah. Kevin operates Organic Pest Control.

In the Garden

Challenge for Strawberry Growers

Get Up & Grow with Jade King

Contributed by Helen Page I saw a startling news report in the Sunday Mail, June 14, 2015, the world's heaviest strawberry, weighing 250 grams and grown by a Japanese farmer, has been announced as the new Guinness World Record holder. As it's the time of year again when the 2015 Glasshouse Country Super Strawberry Competition is about to start, I would like to remind readers that our local competition, run annually in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival, has been recording similar impressive weights for years. All time champion (grown by Shane Frizzo, 2006) weighed 245 grams, and in 1997 the winning entry (from Cameron and Mary Lister) was 240 grams. So come on Glasshouse Country farmers and gardeners, surely this is a challenge you can meet! We always enjoy the friendly rivalry, and last year there was renewed competition from some of the big local growers, but now this is serious. So close to the world record! Can you do it? Last year the joint champion growers were Greg Harvey and Youngs' Braetop Berries, with entries weighing 195 grams ('not a good year for weight' everyone said) but we are hoping for great things from those farms in the weeks ahead. As usual there will be eight weekly rounds, and the competition starts with Round 1 closing on Friday, July 3. Bring entries to the Coochin Creek Co-op for weighing and recording any time during the week, but before 4.00pm on the Friday. (In the meantime the Charity Sports Committee will be researching the rules for the Guinness Book of Records.)

Family rotation in the garden

12cm 

It’s hard to tell if we are into winter or not with cold snaps followed by spring conditions. The flush of heat has even sent my cauliflower into premature inflorescence development, however luckily the broccoli that is less sensitive to high temperatures, is still developing normally. The established plantings of potato, broccoli, cauliflower, turnip and silver beet are all going well so far and the winter harvest is fresh and tasty. This is especially so for the strawberries that I have my Agricultural Science students tend. During this month, I will continue to plant my next succession of winter vegetables to maintain a consistent harvest. Crop rotation Once again I’m in the realm of planning another new productive garden area and as usual I’m starting by looking at the basic concepts of productive garden design. Ticking off the crucial points of sunlight and water access, I am now focusing on the layout, with a preference for six garden beds. It does not have to be six perfectly aligned garden beds, although for me personally, I’m a neat freak with a craving for order and symmetry! I often get asked why I consistently mention the need for six garden beds. In summary, the six bed rotation system enables orderly crop rotation of the plant families whilst allowing for all the vegetables to be grown in the appropriate season. Crop rotation is vital for organic gardens as it helps manage soil-borne pest and diseases. It works by ensuring that each plant family is rotated to a new bed each season, consequently preventing a build-up of hostspecific pest and disease. Furthermore, due to the subtropical climate being conducive to pest and disease growth, a dedicated green manure crop incorporated into the rotation, helps to break their cycle whilst adding invaluable organic matter and nutrients. Finally, having the set six beds enables you to keep track of your plantings over the seasons. We practice similar rotations on a large scale on our farm, ‘Green Valley’, with crops and animals moving in rotation to break pest cycles, as well as help build up the condition of the soil. Obviously, it is not imperative you strictly adhere to the six bed rotation. However, for the more pest and disease susceptible plants, such as the Solanaceae family (tomatoes and potatoes), I would not tempt fate. Let’s hope that the winter season sees more consistent weather that allows our gardens to flourish. Until next month in ‘Get Up and Grow’… Six bed rotation layout

Not long until the Garden Expo Australia’s largest sub-tropical garden event returns to Nambour in July, with renowned gardening experts Angus Stewart, Costa Georgiadis, Graham Ross, Annette McFarlane, Claire Bickle, Jerry Coleby-Williams, Noel Burdette, Phil Dudman and Tohm Hajncl just some of the presenters already announced to appear at this year’s Queensland Garden Expo. Queensland Garden Expo Event Manager Marion Beazley said preparations were in full swing for the three-day event, which is expected to attract more than 35,000 people from across Australia and beyond. “We’ve been busily locking in our speaker’s program over the past few months and are pleased to say the Expo is shaping up to be one of our biggest and best yet,” Ms Beazley said. “This year, we’re expecting to welcome more than 300 exhibitors, as well as over 55 nurseries selling in excess of 40,000 plants. “We’ll also have more than 100 lectures and demonstrations taking place, providing attendees with a wealth of information on everything from creating a thriving veggie garden and rearing chickens, right through to getting kids involved in the backyard fun and cooking with fresh herbs.” The Expo is at the Nambour Showgrounds, July 10, 11 and 12. Chris Johnson - Glasshouse Country Baptist Church

All around me I see wars and earthquakes and famines and droughts. I read about public figures that fall etc. Personally there’s sickness, employment, weddings and so on. Frankly the future scares me. I’ve seen what the present is and I know that there is going to be more of the same. Because the future scares us we often turn to things we think will help us prepare for the future, whether it is tarot cards, palm readers, fortune tellers, astrology charts or one of the latest internet crazes. Or we go to the doctor to get our DNA mapped out so we know how long we have until we pass off this mortal perch. But the future has always been scary. There have always been wars and death and threats and sickness etc. Jesus speaking about the future promised there would always be wars, rumours of wars, famine

and earthquakes, people will hate one another, and false religious leaders. The future has been and will continue to be a scary thing to think about. In the midst of these scary things Jesus gives us three encouragements. 1. Don’t get sucked in by focusing in on the bad stuff. Some people spend so much time worrying about the future with all its bad possibilities that they become fixated on worrying and in doing so they miss living in the reality. 2. Jesus also says in the middle of the bad stuff don’t give up your faith. It can be very easy when the future is scary to say I don’t believe in Jesus anymore because it looks like he is not in control. Jesus says don’t let all this bad stuff distract you and make you lose your faith. 3.Then He goes onto say don’t give up because I’m coming back. Jesus gives us the future’s future. And Jesus promises us that in the future all the things that are wrong in this world will be righted and corrected. That’s why we can take heart, that’s why we can keep on going even when we see a scary future because we know that Jesus has it under control and knows what he is doing.

San grading results

Contributed by Norm Taylor Students from the San Taekwondo Beerwah, Maleny and Kenilworth branches were given the opportunity to show their skills at the Term 2 grading last Friday night. Grading students came together at the Beerwah Training Centre, where white and yellow belt students were assessed on basic kicking, punching, blocking and patterns, while the more experienced blue and red belts must also do rounds of contact sparring, and the red belts must also break timber to pass. Although not all students were successful in achieving their higher belts, overall the standard was very high, especially for the large number of white belts. Some stand-out students from the night included Kenilworth mum Vanessa Vietheer who was awarded the best grading performance medal. Head instructor Norm Taylor said, we are always trying to improve the standard of students by improving our teaching methods. "While our first principle is to have fun, there is always some hard work that we mix in as well. Our experience through coaching at national and international level provides plenty of ideas,” he said. Several students will be eligible to test for their black belts later in the year, so watch this space. www.santkd.com

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Giddy up horsey Jack strode into ‘John’s Stable’ looking to buy a horse. “Listen here” said John, “I’ve got just the horse you’re looking for, the only thing is, he was trained by an interesting fellow. He doesn’t go and stop the usual way. The way to get him to stop is to scream heyhey, and the way to get him to go is to scream thank God. Jim nodded his head, “fine with me, can I take him for a test run?” Jim was having the time of his life this horse sure could run he thought to himself. Jim was speeding down the dirt road when he suddenly saw a cliff up ahead “stop!” screamed

Jim, but the horse kept on going. No matter how much he tried he could not remember the words to get it to stop. “Yoyo,” screamed Jim, but the horse just kept on speeding ahead. It was five feet from the cliff when Jim suddenly remembered “heyhey!” Jim screamed. The horse skidded to a halt just one inch from the cliff. Jim could not believe his good fortune. He looked up to the sky, raise his hands in the air, breathed a deep sigh of relief and said with conviction “thank God.” Submitted by Brian, Glass House Mountains
