WOODFORD

Hi Everyone

L

ast week I was invited along to the View Club’s birthday lunch at the Glasshouse Sports Club. Anyone who knows me is aware that I love a bit of bling - so when I saw their theme was Baubles, Bangles and Beads, there really wasn’t much question about whether or not I would be attending. The View Club ladies take their birthday celebrations very seriously and there is always dressing up involved, so when I arrived and noticed the lady at my table with the bright pink wig, a number of pink feather boas and lots of flashy costume jewellery, I knew I was in my spiritual homeland. You can check out the happy snaps of the ladies on page 9. Regards,

Trailers 2000 are winners once again The Queensland manufacturing business that continues to show Australian manufacturers can compete against cheaper imports has won the 2014 Telstra Queensland Regional Business Award. Winner of the Australian Telstra Regional and National award in 2005, Trailers 2000 heads to Melbourne to represent the Sunshine Coast and Queensland at the National Awards in August. Stuart Daniels, co-founder and CEO said they started their business with little money but a big vision. Unlike other box trailer manufacturers, we have always focused on superior quality and consistency of product, and great service at a price that makes it competitive and good sense to buy Australian made, he said. Trailers 2000 has grown to become the largest Australian manufacturer of box trailers and recently transformed its entire operation Australia wide. This has resulted in a national retailing distribution network, through agents and hardware retailers, including Bunnings, CRT Ruralco and Mitre 10, successfully competing against cheap imported products and offering these retailers the opportunity to support Australian manufacturers who have shown their international competitiveness.

We will also be bringing to market several new ground breaking innovations later this year. “We are very proud to be recognised again in this way – we want to inspire others to get their business idea off the ground and to show that Australian manufacturers can compete successfully against overseas competition if they continue to be innovative,” Stuart said. The National Award winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner on August 6.

And if you think that the protection of a sustainable inter-urban green-belt between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast is vital to our way of life, then the current stoush between State Government and Sunshine Coast Council will be one you’re keen on hearing more about. The State Minister for Planning, Jeff Seeney, has said he would listen to the community on this issue – and so a Halls Creek Community Forum has been organised for 7.00pm until 9.00pm Thursday, July 3 at the CCSA Hall, 2 Nutley Street in Caloundra - as part of the review of the SEQ Regional Plan. Everyone is invited – there’s no need to register or nominate an expression of interest; there will be no police checks; they’ll not be an invitation-only attendance – it’s open for everyone and anyone. But it is suggested you turn up early if you need be sitting down for this length of time. According to Sunshine Coast Council information, planning decisions over the past 10 years will see the inter-urban break effectively shrink over time from 33 kilometres in length to just 17 kilometres.

A review underway into the South East Queensland (SEQ) Regional Plan could see that green space cut by another 3.5 kilometres if the Council is forced by the State Government to include Halls Creek into the ‘must be developed’ category. In particular the community is being asked to consider two areas – these being Halls Creek which is within the inter-urban break and the Beerwah Caloundra South Corridor (or Beerwah East), which isn’t part of the inter-urban break.

Each year Rotary present ‘Pride of Workmanship Awards’, inviting ‘bosses’ to acknowledge their employees’ hard work and dedication. This year Rotary had two nominations, Jennifer Robertson from Australia Zoo and Clem O’Mara from Hanson’s Glasshouse Quarry. Jennifer joined the Zoo’s Accounting department in 2011 as a specialist in accounting, taxation and business improvement. Jennifer has been instrumental in assisting the zoo during tough economic times by streamlining the budgeting process. Her current project is management of a new integrated software solution. Apart from work, Jennifer enjoys the animals in the zoo, especially the tassie devils (she grew up in Tasmania) and of course the cute koalas. Clem O’Mara from Hanson’s Glasshouse Quarry is a hard working and enthusiastic young man with a genuine interest not just in his chosen field as Diesel Fitter, but in the broader quarrying industry. Clem has established himself as a respected leader amongst his peers and he already has an apprentice and trades assistant working under his supervision. Clem has continued his studies and recently completed further competencies which has now extended to his appointment as the site Health and Safety Representative. The Rotarians present truly enjoyed the presentations of these two remarkable people. Rotary are always happy to welcome guests or possible new members to their meetings held at the Beerwah Hotel on the first and third Monday of each month. The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) Executive Officer, Wiebe ter Bals says that resident groups, environmental organisations and Chambers of Commerce are all concerned about this issue as it will have significant implications for what our community will look and feel like in 30 to 40 years time. “The decisions we make today will have a major impact on our ability to preserve our natural environment, our scenic amenity and the character of existing communities,” said Wiebe. “All members of the community will have an opportunity to hear directly from relevant planning and environmental experts and to ask questions of Mayor Mark Jamieson and local members Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell.” Local business groups are supporting the Beerwah East proposal. Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president Bob McLean considers that Beerwah East is the best option. “Both of the sites are poor asset management and do nothing to maximise the utilisation of the existing infrastructure in the Glasshouse Country communities west of the Bruce Highway. Beerwah East is a preference as it complements the environmental buffer,” he said. “Now if Halls Creek is included, as an extension of Caloundra South, there will be no possibility for local growth in population or new job opportunities. The rail corridor must be a growth priority for an efficient movement of people.”

To find out more on the proposals, SCEC have prepared a video that provides a background to the issue and the two sites. The video can be accessed on SCEC website (www.scec.org. au) and on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=JQIlGuFrDT0). Also, Sunshine Coast Council has a webpage (www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage. cfm?code=halls-creek) which outlines why they think Beerwah East is a better option for us than Halls Creek, including that (amongst other things): • it does not intrude into or further diminish the Sunshine Coast – Moreton Bay inter-urban break; • it supports existing and planned investments in major transport infrastructure (i.e. already designated rail corridor between Beerwah, Caloundra and Maroochydore); • it would support and strengthen the Beerwah Major Regional Activity Centre; • its location makes it easier to effectively manage potential water quality impacts on the environmentally sensitive Pumicestone Passage; and • it is on higher ground and less prone to flooding and water quality issues.

Changes to waste collection service

New look trucks, same reliable service – is what Sunshine Coast households and businesses can expect under council’s new waste collection contract. Last Thursday, Remondis Australia unveiled its fleet of waste management trucks that will service the Sunshine Coast for the next seven years. Mayor Mark Jamieson said it was the first time one waste collection agency would service the whole council region. “Since 2008 through amalgamation and de-amalgamation council has provided solid waste collection services across a number of different contracts,” he said. “This is the largest ever waste contract signed by council and will amount to almost $80 million over seven years.” Remondis Australia CEO Luke Agati said there will be 49 vehicles in the waste fleet to provide over eight million collection services from local households each year. The new waste collection contract will commence from June 28 in southern areas of the Sunshine Coast and from July 5 in northern suburbs. During the next two weeks, every household in the region will receive a new waste management brochure and the new recycling collection day calendar.

But to find out for yourself, come along to the community forum on Thursday, July 3, 7.00pm until 9.00pm at the CCSA Hall, 2 Nutley Street in Caloundra.

Easements

It is very important when selling your property to notify your agent if you have an easement on your property. An easement is a right of way giving persons other than the owner access to or over a property e.g. neighbours access, council, Energex, gas companies, etc.

The artwork is being installed this week, and although we can’t bring you any photos for this edition, we thought we should shed a bit of light on to what motivations and inspirations the artist – renowned Sunshine Coast kinetic artist Russell Anderson – used when coming up with his ideas. Russell used a fictitious story to create the design concepts. To help those among us who need art to make sense or be explained, here is Russell’s story … The inspiration of the artwork has come from what is being described as an ‘imagined historic story’ about the Apparatus for Expedient Market Deployment – Ananas Comosus. At one time Beerwah was home to hundreds of pineapple farms. The competition was fierce with growers constantly looking for ways to create bigger, sweeter or less spiky fruit than their neighbours. Another important edge was to be ‘first-to-market’, thereby attracting the best price early in the season. In this regard, the years between 1931 and 1957 were dominated by one farmer – ‘Speedy’ Joseph King. He worked his patch solo, never hiring in pickers. One day the field would be full of pineapples, and the next it was empty.

HALF JOIN TO

No-one ever saw his pineapples leaving his farm, but they were always there at market, ahead of everyone else. Many gossiped about his seemingly mystical gifts, but it wasn’t until the late 1970’s when his property was auctioned by the public trustee that Joe’s secret came to light. The equipment sheds on Joe’s farm were overflowing with mechanical equipment and bizarre machinery as had never been seen before. From his journals the most advanced of these appears to be a matter transporter which include isolation pods and the roving transporter. The artworks are created from found objects and mechanical parts made from patinaed steel, stainless steel, bronze Journal drawing and copper. The pods will have integrated, sensor driven lighting and turn on when movement is detected, created by human interaction, and dim to off when the street is quiet. Cr Baberowski Baberowski believes that Russell’s light-hearted artwork will help Beerwah improve its appeal as a tourist destination and will be a fun talking point between parents and their younger children. Now it is up to you to check them out and make your own decision. Once they are in place we will take photos and share the reactions by the community.

Fight the Winter ‘kilo creep’ at Curves

Beerwah women can fight the “winter kilo creep”, with Curves Beerwah announcing a half price membership deal for a short period of time.

This promotion has been specially timed to coincide with winter, according to Linda from Curves Beerwah. “Studies have shown that in winter, a person’s weight creeps up by around half a kilo. Although it doesn’t sound like much, the weight doesn’t always disappear over summer and can tend to accumulate over time and it doesn’t need to be this way,” explained Linda. “With the right tools and the right support, any woman can lose weight and get fit. We invite all local women to begin the journey to better health today, by joining us at Curves. “The Curves 30 minute circuit works every major muscle group and burns up to 2,000 kilojoules,” Linda said. Also Curves members are loving the NEW Body Basics Classes which helps get members even better results, provides added value to membership, and motivates members to continue working out at Curves with more variety. “Importantly, membership also includes trained Curves coaches to teach, motivate and inspire women to achieve their health and weight-loss dreams.” Curves is the largest weight loss and fitness club chain in the world for women and is famous for its fitness program, the 30-minute Curves circuit. Curves is committed to providing women with the tools necessary to empower them to living more fulfilling lives. In a spin over bike paths Beerwah has had its makeover and is looking good, with still more to come in the new shopping complex set for completion in October. But the facelift is not complete until the outlying townships of Glass House Mountains, Beerburrum and Landsborough are connected by a network of accessible unhindered pathways that will allow all age groups to commute to the central hub of Beerwah by means other than by car. The pathway network would enable all age groups to get fit and active. Our hinterland region deserves its fair share of quality interconnected public pathways to link our townships together. Recently, I took the family on a leisurely ride between Glass House and Beerwah, and was both thrilled and disappointed at what I found. I was pleasingly surprised at the gorgeous scenery of flora and fauna when my little family ventured out and discovered the pathway next to Wishbone Horse Farm in Glass House Mountains. We were all somewhat let down to find that the well constructed pathway ended abruptly at the Pineapple Patch restaurant. To have continued down the verge of the Steve Irwin Way towards Beerwah would have been at considerable risk to our safety. So we turned around and headed back to Bruce Parade, and reloaded the bikes, then drove past the gap to link up with the pathway again at Coochin Hills Estate. From there, the path continued down Kello Road to by-pass Coochin Creek bridge to a low level 10 metre length timber slab bridge that crossed the pristine waters of a flowing creek. From then on, there was just one challenging gradient before a straight run on gravel road past the school ovals and around a few minor obstacles to connect onto the pathway that takes you through the tunnel and into Beerwah township. Subsequently, I did a recorded detailed reconnaissance of the same route to find that it would be quite feasible to complete the pathway – including two minor creek crossings, even

by Wayne Temple

taking into account the negotiation of a public thoroughfare past private property, and leaving enough leeway for the future widening of Steve Irwin Way. This is not a major costly engineering feat at all and shouldn’t be in the ‘too hard basket’ by any means. The Beerwah beautification and Skippy Park development are great projects that have benefited this region, but we just need to link it all up, making the sports ovals, pool, schools, Australia Zoo and the shopping precincts all easily accessible by scooter, bike or on foot. I have contacted Cr Rick Baberowski about the issue and he is supportive. But it’s mainly down to a budget concern. So we need more people showing them that allocating money to the project is in the community’s best interest. If you feel the same way about improving the pathway connections between our towns and facilities and would like to help to get the message to Council (and the State Government), please look out for the petitions that will be made available for people to sign. And write or talk with Cr Baberowski and our local State members (Andrew Powell and Mark McArdle) asking them to support their local communities. Those looking to contact me can do so via my email – moon. message58@yahoo.com.au Wayne is a Glass House Mountains local, who with his wife and four children love to use their bicycles for fitness and transport. He describes himself as just a dad who is keen to see local pathways extended and improved for all weather access for all ages and abilities.

Are HEADACHES robbing your Life Enjoyment? Are recurring headaches interfering with your life? Are you feeling irritable, drowsy, or just plain miserable? Recurring headaches are not normal! While headaches are terribly common, they are NOT normal. The normal condition of the human body is health - not pain and sickness. Pain is our body's alarm to tell us that something is wrong ... like the CHECK ENGINE light on your vehicle. So if you are experiencing headaches or other types of aches and pains, something is causing it. The key is to find out the cause. Four major causes of headaches are dehydration, stress, food intolerance and Spinal Subluxation. Each of these causes has a path to relief. The first three are well known, but most people are unaware of Spinal Subluxation. Are your headaches caused by Subluxation? Spinal Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe abnormal movement of the spinal vertebrae. Because your spine intimately surrounds and protects your spinal cord and Nervous System, symptoms other than neck pain can result. Commonly, upper neck

Beerwah – 5494 0499 www.gcnews.com.au

subluxations result in headaches. This type of headache presents with neck stiffness and pain at the base of your skull, which can sometimes radiate through to your eyes. Drugs can reduce the symptoms (turn off the body's alarm) for a while, but they do not correct the Subluxation - so the symptoms return. So if you find yourself saying "It feels like my head is in a vice," or "I've had headaches since puberty" or "My neck and shoulders are always tight and tense", you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation. Many studies have shown the benefits of chiropractic care for headache sufferers, including the Boline and Duke studies. Chiropractic care is a safe and effective form of healthcare that treats a major cause of headaches, the Subluxation. Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if Chiropractic is the answer to your headaches, because there IS an answer.

It has been Tara’s lifelong dream to travel to New Zealand but unfortunately she has never had the funds available to do so. Shaye said after Tara's friends found out she has only been given such a short time to live, they have organised a few different ways to fundraise money to support Tara’s dreams and hopefully send her to New Zealand.

“One way we are raising money is by selling car stickers, they are only $20.00 each and there are male and female designs,” she said. If you would like to assist in the fundraising efforts, stickers can be ordered through Facebook by searching 'kustom stickers'. Tara also has a page called 'Tara Deacon support & fundraising' where information on fundraising events can be found.

Toastmasters cool under pressure

Contributed by Kerry Gillam Toastmasters Martine and Kerry (pictured) were lucky enough to visit China. When things go wrong for Toastmasters they are usually cool, calm and collected, however sometimes it is not that easy when you are running around Hong Kong Airport trying to reach Beijing because your plane has been cancelled. Anyhow, all's well that ends well. Now we are back in the fold, we will reconfirm what our Club is all about; that is teaching the ability to be able to speak and express oneself with confidence. You can also learn this with a great Club, Glasshouse Country Toastmasters.

Birthday bash

Glasshouse Country View Club What a wonderful way to celebrate our 11th birthday with beautiful weather, fine food and great company. We had 101 ladies attend our luncheon all dressed up in their best outfits and some were dressed in our theme for the day of ‘Baubles, Bangles and Beads’ in the colours of pink, purple and turquoise. Liz Neely won the best dressed outfit by coordinating the colour theme beautifully. Kristy and Kent from Mooloolah Valley provided our musical entertainment for the day – thank you. We wish to thank our National Councillor, Maggy Hickey and Zone Councillor, Lorraine Sumpton for coming along to our birthday function. We had visitors from all of the View Clubs in our zone and the Red Hat Ladies who always attend our birthday luncheons. A special thank you to Tamira Morris who donated her time helping out in the kitchen and serving the meals. The day was a great success with the raffles and trade tables raising much-needed funds to support disadvantaged children with their education. One of our members - Janet Kitchen also received her 10 year badge on the day, congratulations Janet. Our next outing will be a walk along Golden Beach and fish and chips for lunch on

Last Friday night the team from Toothkind the new dentist surgery in Simpson Street at Beerwah held their official opening before they opened their doors to patients on Monday morning. Their plan was to relax with the new staff and share a drink and some nibbles with other local business people, and give them a tour of the new facilities. All was going according to plan until a local mum brought her son in for some emergency attention after he had come off his bike. So the celebrations were temporarily suspended until the youngster was treated! The premises look fabulous and the team are clearly raring to go and looking forward to meeting locals in the community. After 12 months of successful trading in Mooloolah, Bangkok Street Fare will be expanding their operating hours and setting up in Glass House Mountains on Wednesday evenings and for lunch and dinner on Sundays,

You will be able to check out the social pics from the night in next week’s edition – July 2. and continuing in Mooloolah on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The owners have had plenty of great feedback from Mooloolah locals who are rapt to be able to purchase authentic Thai street food in their hinterland town. Their purpose built trailer will hit the road and set up at the entrance to Glass House in the car park area of the Glasshouse Country RSL, 1 Reed Street from 5.00pm – 8.00pm on Wednesday and from 11.00am – 8.00pm on Sundays. School News Fame Junior – a sell-out success!

Glasshouse Country Christian College recently held its musical, Fame Junior, and it was a sell-out success. GCCC’s Head of Performing Arts, Stacey Whyte, said that she was really pleased with how the shows went. “The students put in a lot of hard work so it was terrific to see the theatre completely full for each of the three performances,” she said. Principal Mike Curtis attended the Saturday matinee show and was impressed by the quality of the musical. “I thought it was fantastic,” he said. “The musical was full of great acting and great music. I may be a biased critic but I was thoroughly entertained by the students’ performances,” he added. The show involved 39 secondary students who treated the audiences to a sneak peek inside New York’s High School of Performing Arts in the early 1980s. There were no shortages of blue eye shadow or big hair styles as the cast were costumed and styled to reflect the era. Highlights of the show included the confident tones of Carmen played by Andrea Little, the smooth sounds and moves of Joe played by Troy Fullerton and the rap dancing of Tyrone performed by Jake Hoeksema. Audiences were also entertained by the blossoming romance between Nick and Selena played by Jordan Bull and Caitlin Lewis.

Mooloolah Vacation Care

This June / July holidays we are continuing on with ‘World Cup Fever’ with the first week themed around Soccer. There will be lots of exciting craft ideas and sports. The second week we will be exploring the host Country of Brazil, their interests, animals, music, celebrations and food. There will be two excursions, one to the Rollerdrome, which includes four hours of skating and pizza for lunch. The other excursion will be to the movies to see ‘How to train your Dragon 2’, and then on to Happy Valley to play. The holidays as usual are packed with extra fun, friendship and memories. Children from any schools can attend the centre. Any enquiries and bookings can be made by calling us on 5494 7491.

Robogals bringing engineering to girls

Girls aged eight years or older are invited to discover the exciting world of robots at the University of Queensland’s Robogals holiday sessions at the Beerwah Library on Tuesday, July 8 from 10.00am to 12.00noon. Using Lego Mindstorm NXT robotic kits, volunteers will work with the young participants to help them discover the exciting and rewarding side of typically male-dominated fields. “Of course boys are most welcome to join in the fun too.” Robogals was founded by undergraduate engineering student Marita Cheng at the University of Melbourne, and has chapters in other Australian Universities. Bookings are essential by visiting council’s library website or by calling 1300 LIBRARY.

Indigenous culture shared

Contributed by Honi Ingram When the Landsborough Community Kindergarten recently received the phone call to say Gubbi Gubbi Elder Lyndon Davis was unable to visit the kindy and his cousin Brent would be filling in for him, the children and staff were not disappointed. The children were thoroughly engaged as they watched and listened to Brent play the didgeridoo, making the most amazing animal sounds! Brent showed the children how to dance as Australian animals, with the most life-like re-enactment of a kangaroo! Brent happily answered our list of questions and was very happy to honour our request to paint an Indigenous story on our calico cloth. The children plan to add their understanding of storytelling through art and will proudly display this original artwork. For enrolment enquiries phone 5494 1248.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

Late last year, Guppy’s Early Learning Centres successfully took over ownership of the centre previously known as Beerwah Magic Trees Child Care. Building on their core vision of ‘providing exceptional child care through personalised service,’ the privately owned and operated long day care centre has a proven success rate, with Beerwah being the fifth centre owned and managed by Andrew and Suzanne Parker since 2005. Guppy’s have completely overhauled the centre whilst retaining the staff and re-establishing community connections. As well as providing a cosmetic revamp that includes a bright new paint job both inside and out, landscaping, new playgrounds and signage, there has been a substantial investment in new toys and educational resources. A magnificent Moreton bay fig provides a magical centre piece for the kid’s playground and befitting the name, a big brand new tank full of guppy’s has been installed. One of the biggest investments to date has been towards extensive staff development and training. With an emphasis on developing a team of passionate early childhood educators, programs offered at the centre are tailored to follow the interests of the kids within the beautiful rural environment. Centre Director, Mellissa Dimauita aims to offer integrated programs and services that respond to

Suzanne Parker and Mellissa Dimauita from Guppy's Early Learning Centre the needs of both the parents / carers and their children. These include a music, singing and drama program, yoga and a courtesy bus service that picks up and drops off to home. Guppy’s ethos seeks to positively promote growth and engagement that includes the kids, their families, the centre staff and the wider community. Whilst the changes are an ongoing process with plans to continue to develop and improve facilities at the centre, the focus remains on personalised care and development within a friendly accessible environment. The Centre also runs the Queensland Government approved Kindergarten Program with a qualified Early Childhood teacher. Limited vacancies are currently available for 2014 and 2015. For more information please contact Mellissa Dimauita 5494 0777 or see www.guppys.com.au

Morning Tea for cancer

What a great day at the Landsborough Hall on May 28 for the Morning Tea for Cancer. There were just under a 100 happy people who attended, enjoyed a fantastic morning tea and won a share of prizes at the cent auction. Thank you to the businesses and people who donated prizes, food for morning tea and items for the ‘bring and buy’ stall. Thank you also to the workers who toiled on the Tuesday night setting up and packed up on Wednesday to run the day. We managed to raise $2,667.90 which was a great effort. The raffle (quilt) was won by J. Green, Landsborough ticket no. 307 532. Thanks again. S.A Ruhle Landsborough Hall Committee

Get a grip people

Our country is not in dire trouble as some writers have said, and Treasurer Hockey would have us believe. The country has an S&P 5 star financial rating and the Government debt to GDP is only 21% which is one of the lowest in the world. We survived the GFC reasonably well, though I agree that some of the stimulus packages were not well targeted or managed by Labor. The government debt has been artificially blown out by Treasurer Hockey giving the reserve bank $9 billion dollars in one hit when it could have been given out over three to five years. One has to ask if this was done deliberately to justify his harsh budget measures? Of course the government must reign in spending. But first the tax system which allows the wealthy to avoid tax through the use of family and property trusts and overseas companies shifting the profits off shore to lower tax countries has to be fixed. To place the burden on the sick, the aged and low income families should never be acceptable. Finally, the opinions expressed here are my own. I am not a member of any political party and never have been. Chris McCombe Beerwah

A fitting name

I wholeheartedly support Ann Husband's suggestion that the park south of Landsborough be named after Stan Tutt. Like many other locals, I had assumed that the current nickname, rather unimaginatively taken from a 1960's children's TV show set in Sydney, was temporarily adopted by our former councillor to save saying ‘the park south of Landsborough’. And that it would in time, be officially named after someone of local significance. The late Stan Tutt was a knowledgeable and effective communicator of local historical and environmental issues, and his family has a long term connection to the very land where the park sits. I can think of no one more fitting than Stan, to be honoured by having this park named after them. Mike Haddrell Beerwah

Safety First

Re: Max Chapman being thrown from his horse in GCNews June 11 issue. This has been the second time a horse has thrown its rider in the past 18 months in the same vicinity. We thought that it was a pedestrian walkway not a horse trail. What if there was someone in a wheelchair, a mother

with children or an elderly person walking along that path when the horse bolted? It would have been a different outcome. Fortunately for Mr Chapman and horse they didn’t sustain serious injury. Our question is why are horse riders allowed on this narrow pathway that leads to our township? Surely the safety of the community comes first? Names supplied Glass House Mountains Editor's note: We have sent a request to Beerwah Police on clarification on what the road rules are concerning horse riding on footpaths.

What a shame

Re: Closure to RV travellers at Beerwah Recreation and Showground Reserve (BRSR) Recently on our caravan holiday (with our small dog) throughout NSW and Victoria we enjoyed the varied experiences of staying at free camps, low cost sites and the occasional caravan parks in RV friendly towns. In appreciation for safe, clean and inexpensive parking, we patronised local shops and businesses on a daily basis – and we stayed longer! It was great to meet other like-minded RVers (around 5ish in the arvo) to swap valuable info about ‘good spots to stay’. On numerous occasions we met people travelling north looking forward to warmth and sunshine some who were planning to stay at Beerwah Showgrounds. Sadly we told them that it's no longer possible. “What a shame! We stayed for two weeks last year. We love Beerwah.” The fact is - RVers are tourists who like having the choice to stop at affordable basic-only campsites, it allows people to travel, stay and spend longer. They buy groceries, fuel, meals at cafes, hotels, clubs, local attractions and theme parks... the list goes on, and it's in the best interests of local businesses to make them welcome. BRSR is a special place because of its location – all Beerwah has to offer is within walking distance. So what happens when local councils close these areas to camping? We keep travelling, we simply bypass these towns and seek a more RV friendly destination – just up the road. So if you are concerned about Beerwah's missed opportunities we encourage all RVers and locals who use these grounds to contact Cr Rick Baberowski requesting the facility be reopened to travellers. Building your sustainable wealth

Business feature

The Fiducian Group is a specialist financial services organisation established in 1996 and listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Although we are a large professional company, our focus is on helping you, every day Australians and businesses with your taxation, accounting, bookkeeping, self-managed super funds and all other financial requirements. The word Fiducian comes from Latin 'fiducia' – which means trust. Our team here at Fiducian Accountants and Business Advisers – Rosemarie, Josh, Tanya and Melanie – work together to provide you with a specialised service. We apply integrity, responsibility and expertise in everything we do. Our aim is to build a long term relationship with our clients based on mutual trust, with the aim of building your sustainable wealth. Helping small business There is nothing small about being a small business, the responsibility is enormous. Decades ago, a tradesperson worked just to earn a wage. Today, that tradesperson must work to earn a whole teams’ wage while also providing protection for that team, plus contributing for retirement. With careful planning, this can be done. Helping your business to be profitable Here at Fiducian Accounting and Business Advisers, we have all the guidance necessary to achieve the most from any business under the one roof. We have Accountants to help you achieve profits and to steer you in understanding your business financial reports. We work with you, helping you with systems to make bookkeeping and record keeping easier. The Fiducian Group also offers Financial Planning to help you gain the best from those profits and provide for retirement. Planning for your businesses and personal future is even more important in today’s uncertain economic climate. It is important to have a secure future to look forward to rather than defer planning until tomorrow what can be done today. Are you aware of the latest tax changes for your business? Are you compliant? Are you three steps ahead of where you should be? With our help, you can be well positioned. If your tax liability comes as a surprise to you each year, it doesn’t have to. With careful planning we can keep you aware of what your tax commitments are. As your Tax Accountant we can keep you abreast of this. Wage earners We are a critical support to the wage earner. We actually advise you on

Melanie, Rosemarie, Tanya and Josh what you can legally claim as a tax deduction, and, to top that, we help you by keeping you organised and can help keep you on top of your cash flow throughout the year. The tax laws are complicated. Tax deductibility of expenses is not always straight forward, particularly where the law changes. With Fiducian Accounting and Business Advisers, you can rest assured that you will be given tax advice based on up-to-date information. A personal financial plan A discussion with one of our professional Fiducian Financial Planners will support you to get the best from your investments or superannuation. Important aspects of income protection in the event of your employment being terminated or health deteriorating is also considered. Developing a personally tailored financial plan is important to help you get on track for a financially secure future. Fiducian Financial Services is fully accredited and holds Australian Financial Services Licence No. 231103. Call us on 5494 0566 if you or other members of your family have any questions. We are happy to help.

DISC

Over the years

Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy is getting set to celebrate its first year anniversary in the new premises. GCNews caught up with owner and pharmacist Ruth Zerner and long term staff member Lyndy Keehn, who both started in the early 1990’s, to reflect on some of the pharmacy’s history. Originally situated where the vet surgery operates now, it was opened in 1990 by Marek Malta and Tim Fitzpatrick. Back in those days it was only open weekdays for a couple of hours in the morning and afternoon, to fit in with the local doctors’ surgery hours. In 1994, the pharmacy moved to an old shop near the IGA which was also shared with a printing business. Full time hours, including Saturdays, started in 1998, and the chemist was extended to include the back of the shop as well. Whilst there was a dispensing computer, the till was manual and all stock control was done by hand. The store expanded again in 2004 with more gift lines and services offered. Ruth eventually bought the current premises some years ago with the vision to relocate in the future. Interestingly, the current building has housed a gun shop, then a baked potato shop (with a computer store out back!) followed by a pizza place and cafe.

Lyndy, Ruth and Rebeka from Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy From those early days, the pharmacy has moved from a simple dispensary to a total medicine management provider. These days the pharmacy is much more service orientated and technology driven to assist customers with their health and wellbeing. Staff are trained accordingly to assist with health queries and a number of health and care services (such as free delivery) are offered along with a personalised local service that reflects the long time commitment to the community. Part of that commitment, and as a way to give back to the community, is through the Pharmacy Community Grants scheme which have generously benefited a number of local community, sporting and school groups since 2007. So come help celebrate and support the independent pharmacy that supports you.

Hop down to Skippy Park

Skippy Park has developed into a really unique and popular playground and its attractiveness will continue to grow with the recent opening of the new slide. The park now boasts a variety of experiences for children aged two to 13, including a climbing net, dual flying fox, timber footbridges and natural play areas. Work is also nearing completion on the upgrade to the road entrance to the park. The new dedicated turning lanes on Old Landsborough Road will make it safer for motorists to enter and exit the park.

Honouring Matthew Flinders

I am delighted to support local resident Ivon Northage with divisional funds as part of his recent successful application to the Regional Arts Development Fund to create an interpretive display at the Glass House Mountains Visitor Centre to recognise and celebrate Matthew Flinders’ significant connection to our region. The new display will be unveiled to the public on Saturday, July 19, the bicentenary of Flinders’ death. Beerburrum residents will also celebrate their Flinders’ heritage with a Matthew Flinders Day Festival planned for Sunday, July 27. More information on this event will be available shortly, so for now, mark the date in your diary.

Out and about at Landsborough

I will be at Morris House in Landsborough on Friday, June 27, from 9.00am - 11.00am and welcome you to come along and discuss any concerns with me, or find out about what’s going on in the Division.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 New Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme

The Sunshine Coast has a new planning scheme to guide growth and development across the region. It will help to strike a balance between a sustainable economy, environment and community. The new scheme supports good development in the right areas, recognises our unique communities, provides the right conditions for business to prosper and makes it easier to set up a new business. We’ll review the South East Queensland Regional Plan and continue to advocate for some changes, including emphasising the unsuitability of the state government’s plans to make Halls Creek an Identified Growth Area. I encourage interested residents to find out more and provide feedback at the Hall’s Creek Information Night on July 3 from 7.00pm to 9.00pm at the CCSA Hall, Nutley Street, Caloundra.

Urban Footprint update

As a result of submissions to the Draft Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, a number of areas outside the SEQRP Urban Footprint and Rural Living Area regional land use categories were identified for further investigation to determine whether they are suitable for recommending to the state government for inclusion in the Urban Footprint and Rural Living Area categories. These investigations are currently underway and the outcome will be presented to council as a basis to inform a preliminary submission to the SEQRP Review. It’s expected the SEQRP will be reviewed later this year and the state government will be advertising the document and calling for public submissions. At that time, the public can make a submission to the Regional Plan regarding their property.

Responsible dog ownership

Following two recent severe dog attacks, I was pleased to work together with the Sunshine Coast Pet Partnership Group earlier this month to discuss ways to educate and encourage responsible pet ownership across the region. Committee members meet regularly and comprise the Australian Veterinary Association, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Shire councils and key animal welfare organisations - SCAR, 4Paws and RSPCA. One topic covered was the RSPCA’s wonderful ‘Operation Wanted’ program on now, offering a 20% discount for desexing of cats and dogs at various vets Coast-wide. Don’t miss out on this wonderful initiative - visit www.operationwanted. com.au for full details. www.gcnews.com.au

Enjoy a delicious winter warmer with an award winning Beefy’s pie Winter is finally here and as the days and nights become considerably cooler there is nothing better than enjoying a delicious winter warmer with an award winning Beefy’s pie. Consider the simple dinner option of tasty Beefy’s pies. Providing a convenient and easy alternative that will guarantee to keep the whole family happy (especially mum or dad!) Why not make one night a family Beefy’s pie night? To ensure that the whole family can dine together, Beefy’s also offer a Gluten Free pie option. Adapting their award winning signature steak pie recipe, their GF pie is the only gluten free steak pie currently endorsed by Coeliac Australia. Owner of the family run business Mark Hobbs, has a personal story behind developing the GF pie as his son Michael was diagnosed at the age of three with Coeliac disease and the family had previously struggled to find dining options that could include the whole family. Happily with the advent of GF flours available on the market, they are now thrilled to be able to offer this option. Since opening their first Beefy’s on the Sunshine Coast in 1997, the business has enjoyed a long history of award accolades for their flavoursome pies which Mark credits to the hard work of the team at Beefy’s. Last year, their Signature Steak Pie won Gold at the prestigious Sydney’s Fine Food awards. As well as Gold, the team were awarded Silver for their Thai Green Curry Chicken, as well as Silver for both their Angus Steak and their Aussie Special aka Ned Kelly Pie. Currently you can enjoy a Beefy’s pie at six locations; however exciting plans are currently underway to open a new store at North Lakes in July. Constantly aiming to improve their pies to ensure the locals keep coming back again and again, drop by and experience the taste difference for yourself.

Living Parent info night for insights on teens

The University of the Sunshine Coast’s annual parent information night on Thursday, July 3, will go well beyond just providing details about what university life is like. The event, from 6.00pm to 7.30pm, will feature presentations by top USC researchers on some key issues facing young adults when they finish high school, such as learning to drive, healthy food choices, teen brain development and building motivation and resilience. Event organiser Danielle Silcox said parents of high school students across the region, as well as the students themselves, were welcome to attend this interesting event. “Choosing a career and studying at university is a big decision for students and their parents,” she said. “Starting this next chapter in their lives is a balancing act in which parents and carers play an important role in navigating through all the options. “This event will provide information and tips on how parents can support teenagers through the process and much more, including guest presentations on understanding your teen.” The event will begin with a session by Sunshine Coast parent Denise French, who will outline USC’s processes and options while also talking about her unique experiences as the mother of two USC graduates and one current student. This will be followed by a presentation by Associate Professor of Education Michael Nagel called ‘Making sense of how your kids make sense: Understanding the developing teenage brain’. Dr Nagel, who specialises in the neurological development of children, will discuss what goes on inside a teenager’s brain especially during the decision-making process. Those attending the evening can then select one of three short seminars on: the experiences of learner drivers; how to assist young people in building motivation and resilience; and the nutrition rating of supermarket food that is targeted towards children. Bookings for the information evening are essential and can be made online at www.usc.edu.au. Call 5456 5000 for more information.

Dine In

with Lea Parkes

Mellum Munchies

Recently Mellum Munchies at Landsborough was purchased by new owners who plan to keep what the locals love about the place. For those who hit the road early on an empty stomach, the good news is they are now open from 5.00am, so tradies and commuters can ring their orders through, get a car park outside and then just grab their order and go. Mellum Munchies has always had a great reputation for their burgers and the new owners have even added in another ‘chilli chicken burger’ to the menu to complement the 15 varieties of burger they already offered including a vege burger. Sitting waiting for my chicken burger recently, I watched it being built. There was plenty of precision work that went into the construction

of fresh ingredients that were layered on, real lettuce, tomatoes, grated carrot and my all-time favourite, beetroot. As a bit of a sweet tooth, I was also pleased to see that they have introduced a range of natural and gluten free sweet treats, including banana bread, fudge brownies and passion fruit melting moments. These are made locally by Kirsty, a young local, who recently won several prizes at the Maleny Show. They also offer a great range of fish and chips which go down pretty well for a takeaway dinner on these colder nights, or you can take advantage of their outdoor tables and chairs for an eat in option. Mellum Munchies has a huge menu which also includes toasted sandwiches and wraps and they have a number of family value meals.

Or if it’s just a drink or a coffee you are after – they have that covered too. They carry the range of traditional Wimmers soft drinks as well as American favourites Doctor Peppers and Cherry Cola. The team have had one major hiccup since taking over, the recent breakdown of their ventilation system which unfortunately was out of their control. However Bronwyn said that without the great service of Brad and Sarah at Mingleford Electrical, who went above and beyond to get them open as soon as possible, it could have been even more disruptive. They would really like to thank their loyal customers for their patience during that time!

Natural do-it-yourself sprays

Every now and again, someone asks me to reprint the natural do-it-yourself garden sprays. So, here’s a few of the more useful ones. Spray oil Make your own pest oil to smother scale, leaf miner and mites, and as a sticking and wetting agent to add to other sprays. 500ml of vegetable oil; ¾ cup of pure liquid soap. Combine them together until mixed. Bicarb soda spray This spray prevents fungal spores from establishing, and is useful for treating black spot on roses and mildew on vegetables. 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate soda; 4.5 litres of water; 5 tablespoons of spray oil. Casuarina tea This is used by biodynamic farmers to combat fungal diseases, especially on grapes and strawberries. In 1 litre of water, gently boil 60 grams of dried Casuarina (or She-oak) needles for 20 minutes. Cool, strain and dilute 1 part concentrate to 40 parts water. Garlic spray This spray will deter insects, especially caterpillars, grasshoppers and aphids. 3 crushed cloves of garlic; 1 tablespoon of spray oil; 1 litre of water or milk. Combine the garlic, spray oil and water or milk and leave to soak overnight. Milk spray Powdery mildew appears as grey or white powder on the new foliage – especially on cucumbers and zucchinis. 1 part of milk; 9 parts of water. Spray regularly over the leaves as a preventative treatment. Molasses spray Great to control caterpillars and as a soil drench to prevent root nematodes in tomatoes and capsicums. Dissolve one tablespoon of molasses and one tablespoon of spray oil into a litre of warm water. Double the concentration for nematodes. Chilli spray Another good chewing insect repellent. 40 small hot chillies; 2 litres of water; 2 tablespoons of spray oil. Puree the chillies and one litre of water together in a blender. Strain the mixture and add the spray oil and the other litre of water. Eucalyptus oil spray Eucalyptus oil, kills scale insects, aphids, mites and many other pests. Combine 2 teaspoons of eucalyptus oil with 1 litre of water and 1 tablespoon of spray oil.

Win prizes … support the Twinnies It’s almost QLD Garden EXPO time again and this year Simon Smith from Go Green Rainforest Nursery, Glenview Road, Glenview (near the BP) will be running their fundraising raffle to raise money for the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue. For the month of June, Go Green will be giving all customers the chance to win a double pass to the 30th QLD Garden EXPO, $100.00 worth of native plants from Go Green and a personal guided tour of the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Centre. All proceeds collected will be donated to the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue to assist in the great work they do. Tickets are only $1.00 and are available at Go Green Rainforest Nursery.

Longer to Sleep?

Two days ago was the longest night for 2014. In two days time we have a new moon. The nights will get shorter and the days longer until we reach December 22; and then the process is reversed again. The moon will move towards the full moon two weeks from now; and it will then continue on its cycle month after month. The seasons, the lunar movements and the tides just come and go. And so it seems with life. If we just let it happen, life gets away from us ever so routinely. And yet one of my favourite passages from Psalm 19 says there is more to what is going on around us than routines and cycles. ‘The heavens are telling the glory of God; they are a marvellous display of his craftsmanship. Day and night they keep on telling about God. Without a sound or word, silent in the skies, their message reaches out to all the world.’ Psalm 19:1-3, TLB. Some of this routine in sun, moon and seasons can lead us to see the hand of God, and to be aware of His presence in our lives. It can be a reminder of His creative power and his

re-creative work in our lives. However, in this post-modern world with its busyness, bustle, and sophisticated thinking, we often have little time to contemplate the grandness of His majesty. That is why I enjoy getting out into the wild; whether it be a deserted surf beach on Bribie Island, a quiet moment in the rain forest of Mary Cairncross Park, or the solitude of the windless horizontal remoteness of western Queensland. There I experience the peace and wonder that comes from the realisation of my chance to be alive in a universe so amazing and complicated, yet so simply gorgeous because of the presence of God. With God in the picture it makes much more sense. If God so loved that He created, it may not be that hard to accept that He so loved he gave His Son for our salvation.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Beerwah Rugby League

Contributed by Kylie Bickford Saturday, June 14, was the final game in the first round of C grade games for 2014. This game was also the club’s ‘pinks shorts day’ where our men’s side was ‘tough enough to wear pink’. Our game was a hard game against Coolum but we came away with the victory and we are undefeated after seven games. This is a great achievement by our side and is great to see all the training and hard work is paying off. This game was also the president’s cup and Beerwah have not won this cup since 1989. We are very thankful to our supporters who come each weekend to watch and cheer us on. Pink shorts day at Beerwah Sportsground 38 |

A very cranky old woman was arrested for shoplifting at a grocery store. She gave everyone a hard time, from the store manager to the security guard to the arresting officer who took her away, complaining and criticising throughout the process. When she appeared before the judge, the judge asked what she had stolen from the store. The lady defiantly replied, "just a stupid can of peaches." The judge then asked why she had done it. She replied, "I was hungry and forgot to

CANCER June 22 – July 22 The new Moon in your sign on Friday, June 27 is an emotional trigger. It means to plant seeds that lead to your personal security, serenity or family and personal joy. The weekend brings you much warmth and love. You will have the feeling of growing satisfaction if you attend to your garden, pruning and planting for best results. LEO July 23 – August 22 With the Sun sign entering Cancer on June 21, and the new Moon coming in on June 27, this lunation prods you into an abrupt action. Hopefully you will now move from any old wounds and heal your psyche and body as you get inspired to new ambitions and learn personal self forgiveness. Be yourself. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This new Moon in the emotional security sign of Cancer, triggers your friends and social connections. Each day of this week may see warm, friendly, faithful companions that make your life feel rich. Put aside any imperfect fallacies of yourself and divert yourself into inspiration where you see the best in each other. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This could be a wonderful new Moon week for you as it offers chances to make changes in your life and to perhaps further your own dreams. No doubt in the process something will be gained, but something also is lost or needs to be let go. Lose yourself in a book or a movie, walk in the forests, or gaze at the sea now.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 New perspective arrives for you this week which can change how you see life. The reason for this being that the new Moon is in your compatible sign of Cancer. So the benefits of Scorpio and Cancer together fills your emotions with visions of your futuristic dreams. If faith can move mountains, you will be blessed. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With the new Moon in the emotional sign of Cancer the sector of your chart for the greatest emphasis is in marriage or partnership. Now is the time for you to select strong partners, listen to advice from others, and see the opportunity of fresh waters for shared resources. Don’t invest in pipe dreams but keep believing. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This new Moon on Friday, June 27 works well with most Capricorns. Some of course will feel that their parents may have done wrong by them, however, those that are spiritual, understand that they are being tested on their own true sense of personal responsibility. How will they handle themselves as parents? AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Now that Neptune, your ruler, is in Pisces and in retrograde, there is a mist over some financial affairs. With the new Moon in Cancer your gut feelings need to examine your beliefs about money, values, priorities and their relation to your self worth. It’s a time of fresh emotional approach to work, routine and habits.

PISCES February 20 – March 20 This new Moon week further enhances your feelings for a loved one who has captured your heart this month. You will tend to more affections with care and patience. So this Cancer new Moon is opening your heart and Neptune flows with kisses of love and affection between you, a lover or child. Good results now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The new Moon, at five degrees Cancer, at 6.10pm on Friday, June 27, puts a strain on a domestic or career situation. Now it is best to remember by embracing change you can make things right. You will feel intolerant if your will is blocked. Control aggressive actions and don’t drive if you are feeling very angry. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This new Moon week might stir within you the need to tell someone about how you really feel. This new Moon in the sign of Cancer speaks to you of home cooking and warm apple pie. Let your partner know what your needs are. A family dinner and social occasion enriches these warm connections. Some restlessness. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 At the end of this month Mars gets into the wrestling ring with Uranus and Pluto! This could bring about an unconventional expression of your desires which could bring both excitement and instability. What will be more obvious is that you are going to rehash financial questions and you must ask for help if necessary.

bring any cash to the store." The judge asked how many peaches were in the can. She replied, "nine, but what do you care about that?" The judge patiently said, "well, ma'am, because I'm going to give you nine days in jail - one day for each peach. "As the judge was about to drop his gavel, the lady's long suffering husband raised his hand and asked if he might speak. The judge said, "yes, what do you have to add?" The husband said, "your honor, she also stole a can of peas." Submitted by Hugh Jones
