Last Friday night I woke up in the wee small hours in a bit of a panic. I don’t know why but in the middle of a perfectly good sleep I had suddenly thought “oh no – I forgot to remind everyone about the new Labour Day public holiday and it is only a week away”. While this isn’t a big deal for most people, a short week in our office and for our regular advertisers seems to throw us into a spin, as Monday is our go-to-print day. So if we want to get the paper out that week it means we have to have everything finished and to the printer on Friday. So when I remembered this in the middle of the night I got out of bed and busily emailed myself a task list for everything I would need to do on Monday morning – so when Monday

Local author inspired to share her stories By Lea Parkes

Last week when I met Glass House Mountains author Cathy Bauman she had just come from a successful book reading locally and her passion for sharing her stories clearly shone through. Cathy has recently had a series of four gorgeous children’s books republished, which she took along to the playgroup held at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre where she held the children captivated with her stories. “What I really enjoy is seeing how the children respond to the stories and their very direct feedback,” Cathy said. “The children love to share their thoughts and give me great ideas for future books.” Cathy published a series of six children’s books in the late nineties, with the theme of ‘A time in the life of’ featuring different topics of a leaf, a hair, a drip, an egg, a shadow and a grain of sand. The books were educational with stories that are factual, while being interesting and fun for children with their colourful illustrations that appealed to the imagination of little readers.

Knowing that the stories were timeless and that they would appeal to today’s children just as much as they did when she wrote them all those years ago, she approached a publisher on the Coast and got their advice about republishing the books. Their response was positive. They thought the stories were great, they just needed to be revamped with more modern artwork – so they found a local Sunshine Coast illustrator and a first series of four books has been published and – depending on their success – a second series will be go to print either later this year or early next year. Cathy’s passion for sharing stories has also seen her produce a book on the history of ‘Beak Pastoral Company’ and she is also in the process of writing a story about her husband Bob and his twenty-year struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. Cathy is keen to share her work with her young audience as well as their parents and grandparents and is happy to do book readings for other local groups. If you would like to organise a reading you can contact her directly to request it. While the publisher will be making sure the books are available in bookshops, Cathy is also selling them directly to locals, at $12.00 per book plus postage and handling. Budding writer wins prize Bayley O'Brien from Peachester has won Queensland Second Prize in a national writing competition. Bayley, who attends Glasshouse Country Christian College, was chosen from more than 3,800 entries for his entry in the Pilot Pen Creative Writing Scholarship 2013. The competition was judged by renowned children’s author, Andy Griffiths and Sonja Walker, director of Kids First Children’s Services. Mr Griffiths said they chose Bayley's entry because it showed a lot of imagination and a clear plot. “It was a great story that keeps the reader’s interest from beginning to end,” he said. Bayley won $500.00, a $100.00 Pilot Pen Pack and a signed Andy Griffiths book pack worth $100.00. “I am absolutely delighted to have won second prize in this competition,” Bayley said. “It has definitely given me more confidence to keep writing!” Barbara Oliver from Pilot Pen Australia said that this year they received more entries than ever before. “Our heart-felt thanks goes out to all of the schools, mums and dads and children who took the time to enter,” she said. “The volume and standard of entries clearly shows that creative writing is alive and well in our community – a wonderful sign of hope for future generations of readers and story-tellers alike.” Bayley's winning entry can be read, along with the other finalists, on the Pilot Pen website: www.pilotpen.com.au. Beerwah Pool on track for reopening Since July 19 the Beerwah Aquatic Centre has been closed due to upgrade and maintenance work required on both the 25-metre pool and the ‘learn to swim’ pool. The work required for the equipotenial bonding upgrades on the ‘learn to swim’ pool has now been completed. The re-tiling work on the 25-metre pool is progressing well and all appears on track for reopening on October 8.

Pool Managers, Brenden and Allison Roser said it is a real shame that the pool is not available for this current school holidays, however in the long run the community will be pleased with the final results with the 25-metre pool being like a new pool. “The timeframe to complete the work was completely dependent on the weather – and with such a long dry run this has certainly gone in our favour,” Brenden said. Allison said they are “really looking forward to welcoming everyone back” and they have planned a celebration for when they reopen. “We will keep everyone updated on what we have planned closer to the time,’’ she said. While the pool is still closed, Allison is continuing to check the answering machine, so if you have any questions, make sure you leave a message and she will get back to you as soon as possible.

Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) Assistant Commissioner Neil Gallant said precautions were being taken by firefighters to prepare for potential vegetation fires as the fire danger rating climbed to very high to severe in some areas. “Some locations may experience high temperatures, low relative humidity and strong winds which together will make it difficult for firefighters to contain any vegetation fires that flare up,” he said. Mr Gallant said current conditions meant it was crucial for residents to ensure they were prepared for potential vegetation fires. “Residents need to finalise preparing their properties and if they haven’t done so already, visit the Rural Fire Service website to download a bushfire survival plan,” he said. If you are unsure of what you can do to reduce your risk and prepare for a fire event, contact one of our local Volunteer Community Educators (VCE) who can give you specific advice about your property. Each week GCNews will bring you details of your

local VCE in case you need their advice. A letter on this week’s ‘You Said It’ page brings up one possible area of uncertainty – burning off. Trevor Jakeman, Fire Warden with the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, explains that landholders who need to reduce their dry matter fuel levels, or someone who needs to safely burn off a pile of vegetation, can easily apply for a fire permit with their local Fire Warden. “We assess the application and make sure that the purpose is legitimate and that safety conditions are in place. If needed, the local Rural Fire Brigade can assist in the burning activity for the cost of a donation to the brigade,” he said. We asked Trevor if a person can check if they aren’t sure if someone in the neighbourhood has lit an approved permitted fire. “Part of the permit process is for the applicant to notify their neighbours. This is to reduce the likelihood of unnecessary concern,” Trevor said. “If you’re still unsure, you can always contact North Coast Fire Comm on 1800 354 621. “If it isn’t approved, they will take the appropriate action.” Fire Warden contacts can be found by using the interactive map on the Rural Fire Service website – www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/fw_finder.asp.

Teghan gets a lesson from Timomatic Students at Teghan’s Dance Club at Peachester might just find their teacher has stepped it up a notch next semester after returning from Sydney where she attended the Australian Dance Festival at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Stadium. During the festival, Teghan participated in eight workshops with some of Australia’s leading dancers and choreographers including the internationally renowned Timomatic. By taking part in the workshops, dancers also had the opportunity to be selected to compete in the 'Dance Around the World Solo Competition'. Hundreds of dancers participated in Timomatic's workshop, so Teghan was understandably rapt when he chose her as one of his ‘Top 6 contenders’. While she wasn’t ultimately chosen to go through to the competition – this was a great achievement. Teghan said that the workshops were challenging, fun, diverse and inspiring! Every dancer / choreographer had a different style of dance and teaching, but with a universal passion for what they do and high energy! It was very exhilarating! She is really looking forward to returning to teaching in term four and sharing her experience and new techniques with her students. For the ladies, if you like Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies' (Put a Ring on It)’ Teghan can teach you to dance like Beyoncé. Traffic operation, Beerburrum

Sunshine Coast Police and officers from the Road Policing Command detected four drug drivers and three drink drivers during operation Lima Agenor at Beerburrum last Thursday night. During the operation 1097 breath tests and 46 drug tests were conducted on the Bruce Highway between 8.00pm and 1.00am. There were 17 people issued with notices to appear on 33 charges including drug possession, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and driving licence offences. Officer in Charge of the Sunshine Coast Road Policing Unit Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho said it was disappointing drivers are not considering the safety of other road users before they get behind the wheel. “Every drink and drug-affected driver we get at an operation like this is one too many,” Senior Sergeant Panoho said. “Police can perform road safety enforcement anywhere, anytime. “Before you get into your car, consider what affect your actions could have on yourself and other road users. “We want the community to work together to reduce road trauma in Queensland.”

Council this week launched their Australia Day Awards program and they are asking residents to nominate individuals and organisations in our community that work to make the region a better place. The Mayor, Mark Jamieson, reckons it’s important that we not only celebrate their contribution on Australia Day but also publicly acknowledge them via a formal, highly respected, awards program. Nominations are being sought for the following categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Community Group or Organisation, Creative, Environment and Sport and Recreation. Plenty of girl power on new Chamber executive There has been much media interest in the fact that our new Prime Minister’s Cabinet is very gender imbalanced, with only one female member. Well it would seem that the new Executive Team for the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce is faced with the same dilemma. However, President Bob McLean isn’t concerned about being the only male executive member of the team. He’s looking forward to working with this dynamic group of local business women who each have the local business community at heart. The new members are Vice President, Diane Ford from Smartlearn Training and Development, Secretary Lisa Sauer from Top Gun Paint and Panel, and Tara Smithyson from Total Microsystems. They join with continuing members Ursula Starkovsky from Glasshouse Country First National and Vicki Heading of Beerwah Hair and Beauty. They are a group of ‘doers’ which means the Chamber will be able to see real results from the group. Already there are positive signs of what is to come, with the initial presentation of the ‘Buy Local First’ campaign to members. “I am also really pleased that we now have an executive that represents businesses in Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Landsborough and even Maleny,” Bob said. Desperately seeking Tibro's history The Tibro Netball Club at Glass House Mountains was originally established in 1989 with five Senior ladies teams. With this year marking their 25 year anniversary, the club has decided to celebrate and reflect on their history. An Anniversary Dinner is planned for Saturday, November 9 which should be a great opportunity for former and current members to catch up with old friends, reminisce about their ‘glory days’ and celebrate this significant milestone. Glass House Mountains local Dimi Young, as the club’s most senior member, has taken on the task of collecting the club’s history with photos, memorabilia, trophies and special memories. These will be on display on the night and then afterwards collated into a booklet. Dimi has been working on the project this year and already has spent quite a lot of time scanning back copies of GCNews for any news stories, and doing some detective work to track down all 12 of the Club Presidents since 1989.

Council scraps compulsory green waste bin by Greg Brown At last Thursday’s Council meeting, community outrage won the day, with Councillors voting 9 to 3 to dump the two week old plan to introduce mandatory green waste bins for a $60.00 fee. The new charge was to have commenced on July 1, 2014 but has now been referred for further investigation as part of the Waste Minimisation Strategy review. Local Glasshouse Country readers panned the compulsory bin plan as being ‘unfair’ and a ‘money grab’. Local Councillors Rick Baberowski and Jenny McKay voted against the original motion which was taken behind closed doors in a confidential session, and were two of the nine who supported

the veto of the plan last Thursday. The latest motion approved at the meeting decided to not proceed with the green waste bin as part of a new waste collection contract … ‘due to the relatively high cost per property and the low waste diversion levels achieved.’ This means that the cost to ratepayers was too high for the small difference it would have made to the amount of green waste going to landfill – contrary to what Mayor Mark Jamieson claimed in his media statement after the original decision was made. More sensibly, the new decision from Council strengthens community education programs to encourage more residents to home compost and make use of the existing optional green waste bin system.

Las Vegas in the middle of the Nevada Desert. I would have liked to have flown up the Grand Canyon but didn’t get the opportunity (this time). What are the things that left an impression on you? • daytime temperatures didn’t drop below 40 degrees • most establishments on 'The Strip' don’t close • poker machines are everywhere – including in the airport gate lounge and on the footpath • disorientation was a constant risk – particularly when trying to find an exit from a casino • drinks in casinos were free if you are gambling – but a $1 tip to the waitress meant she came back more than once • monorail stations could only be accessed by walking through at least two casinos • thousands of people were walking down Las Vegas Boulevard drinking beer or cocktails – numbers increase after midnight

Would you recommend Las Vegas as a holiday destination? I would recommend it as a must-see destination (once) but only for about three or four days. You very quickly get over the glitz, heat, tipping culture and artificial facade. However the novelty value was probably eight out of 10. My son would disagree. He would give it 10/10 and wants to work there!

Community News Rotary Update Contributed by Ursula Starkovsky The Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains is always extremely busy in August and September. It is the time when other clubs have their annual events and our club helps local organisations raising funds for their cause, like providing gate keepers at the Beerwah Sports Day, organising a sausage sizzle at the ‘Garage Sale’ at Australia Zoo, as well as the Father’s Day function organised by the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy. It does get tricky when we have two events on the same day like the Sport’s Day in the morning and the Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings in Caloundra which was an all-day event. We have had a combined evening at the Caloundra Golf Club with the clubs in our Rotary Cluster. This was the official visit of our ‘home grown’ District Governor Trevor Taylor. It is always good to see friends from the other clubs and exchange information or simply enjoy a few

hours of fellowship. Father’s Day was another hectic day for the club. Firstly we had a sausage sizzle at Australia Zoo, and Induction of John then in the afternoon Simpson it continued in Skippy Park to help raise funds for the chaplaincy. Besides all the activity, we have had fun and a lot of camaraderie and best of all, we said hello to a new member, John Simpson. A big Welcome to you, John! Business backs fight against cancer Hinterland Boxing Club (HBC) client Kelly Yeo is participating in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ to raise funds that will benefit the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) and Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH). The walk is to end breast cancer and gynaecologic cancer - including ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and cervical cancer. HBC is a proud supporter of Kelly and the fight against cancer, and to assist her fundraising efforts they organised a ‘Train for an End’ day on Sunday, August 25.

The training was a ‘Strength / Conditioning and a Boxing Session’ with each participant paying $10.00. They also organised a raffle, and in total the club was able to raise $530.00 to contribute to Kelly’s efforts. Thanks also to the other local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle including a Hinterland Seafood voucher valued at $50.00, Elimination Pest Management – Internal / External Pest Control valued at $176.00, Beerwah Hotel Dinner Voucher valued at $50.00 - HBC - 10 Pass Card, hand wraps, HBC hat and a shaker valued at $140.00.

Mrs Hill, State President, said some of the inductee criteria covered sustained leadership, major financial contributions, pioneering and outstanding contribution and length of service to Queensland. “During our 90-year history, thousands of women have served their community through the best and harshest of experiences which include World War II, recessions, floods, fires and droughts,” Mrs Hill said. “Our members have worked tirelessly towards supporting people, causes and other organisations in our communities. It is an honour and proud moment in our history to be recognised for our outstanding social and philanthropic contribution to the community.” We will be celebrating our sixty-eighth birthday on October 16 with a luncheon at the Good Old Days Shoppe, Peachester. Congratulations to Emma, Lexie and Kayla who won prizes in the division international competition. Joan Kropp will be our representative at the state conference in Bundaberg. Cheryl and Murray Fox are back – call in and say hello! Cheryl and Murray Fox would like to welcome all previous and new customers to check out their newly refurbished seafood shop. They began a seafood business here in Beerwah over 19 years ago, which many readers will remember, they ran the business with their two daughters Cassie and Elisha. They decided to take a break from the shop nine years ago, and in that time have continued to run the wholesale side of C & M Seafoods, maintaining a valuable link with local trawlers and fishermen. Cheryl has spent the time furthering her knowledge of the industry, completing many courses in safe food handling, HACCP, quality assurance, and workplace health, safety and hygiene. Beerwah Rural Fire Service Contributed by Lou Spann G'day Readers, It has been a long time since the Beerwah Brigade has given an update of its activities. We have been busy preparing for the current fire season by carrying out a number of controlled burnoffs in the area. If you haven't done so already, you really should make preparations around your home, especially if you live in an area surrounded by bush. We have also been busy with responding to a number of fires in bushland settings and the highway in our district in recent times. Our water issues have been sorted with the re-establishment of the hydrant at the station. To all community members who gave us support for this issue, we are very grateful. The Rural Fire Brigade Association of Queensland came forward and paid Unity Water the fee and for this we are very appreciative. We are now back to where we

Steve updated us with his knowledge of the latest innovations in IT, particularly our Blog site, demonstrating what a great way it was to present our writing to a much larger readership. A section of a book ‘A Cop’s True Tales’ written by retired Police Sergeant, Brian Stallworthy was read to the group. The book is recommended for its style and humour. Recently, our group was fortunate to have Editor, Val Merwood as a guest speaker. Val’s role is to assist in the preparation of manuscripts for

He has always been a great man in a pinch and has been a major participant in fire response and mitigation activities throughout that time. The anticipation and excitement of turning the spade to reveal what lay beneath had all the children longing for a turn. Dirt, potatoes and laughs flew freely across the garden bed before the cooking began. The smell of potato rostis and grilled mushrooms made everyone hungry and meant there were no leftovers. Preppies were kept busy weeding and mulching their adopt-a-garden beds in readiness for the next plantings of flower seedlings.

Contributed by Sandy Johnson Kitchen Garden classes at Glasshouse Country Christian College are fun and often adventurous. This term the students have been eating their way through the rainbow. The first week began with red fruit and vegetables such as capsicum, tomatoes, grapes, watermelon, strawberries and radishes were harvested to make little tasting plates for the students. Orange and yellow week meant the students could cover themselves with flour making pumpkin scones. Even children who screwed up their nose at the idea of eating pumpkin came back for seconds and thirds. For the colour green, students took turns naming the green fruits and vegetables and were amazed at how many there were. They harvested zucchini and kohlrabi and made quiches. Purple seemed challenging but the cooks made little prune cakes and the students ate fresh beetroot ‘spaghetti’ resulting in the whole class having purple tongues. Of all the colours, brown turned out to be the most fun.

Busy term and fun at Mooloolah Contributed by Kylie Gillespie We’ve had Science Week with Doctor Joe, and Brisbane excursions week (to Parliament House, Planetarium, Art Gallery and Science Museum)! We’ve been visited by an Australian Olympian in Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week and the Gubbi Gubbi people recently! Students wrote the following stories about two of these special events. Olympic Swimmer Visits by Georgia, aged 12 As an infant, Marayke Jonkers was in a car accident, and lost the function of her lower body. When told by the doctors that Marayke wouldn’t be able to walk again, Marayke’s mother taught her to swim! Marayke didn’t realise she was different to other kids, and was determined to match them in the pool! She worked hardest on

butterfly because her arms and body could make her legs move. Her talent and determination got her all the way to the Para-Olympics - and a bronze medallion! Mooloolah State School students were really fortunate to have Marayke come in Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week to talk about her journey, and making dreams reality. Book Week Parade by Lucy, aged 10 Mooloolah State School Book Week Parade was a great opportunity for kids and teachers to get out and show off their favourite book characters. We had Percy Jackson to Spiderman and everything in between! Cruella Deville and Wise Old Owl judged the show, and Snow White compared with help from junior Snow White! It was a magical time!

I love reading your news each week as it keeps me informed of what is happening locally and what plans the local pollies have for the local area. I was horrified to read the comment by the State member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell on September 11 page 14 ‘I am happy to confirm the footprint has been reduced down from 35 to 24!! .....And then in future a further six of the remaining nine hectares will be reclaimed.’ I would have thought intelligence was a prerequisite to become a politician, not ignorance. I’m deeply disappointed again by the lack of care being afforded to the environment by the government. The only reassuring thing is that when we have wiped the planet and the human race out through greed, anger and environmental destruction....it will rejuvenate itself....it was here way before us! Council should confirm details

The other day I received a letter of complaint from the Sunshine Coast Council - for causing a smoke nuisance with open fires. Apparently one of my neighbours made the complaint. Now the strange thing is that there have been no open fires at my place since this time last year. I know that the Rural Fire Brigade have been helping my neighbour burn some stacks of old dead timber. They were at least 70 metres from my boundary and clearly visible from the road. Maybe my neighbour was mistaken about my address because the origin of the smoke was quite clear? Nevertheless I do find this occurrence odd on several accounts: 1. That the SCC officer should accuse me of this offence without ascertaining that the fires were on my property. 2. That a fire authorised under the Rural Fires Act and attended by the Rural Fire Brigade should be the subject of a formal complaint notice. 3. That people who choose to live in a rural area should complain about fires and smoke. Fuel reduction burns are as much a part of rural life as roosters crowing and cows bulling. Complaining about smoke in a rural area is akin to living on a highway and complaining about traffic noise. The complainant might also want to consider the short term discomfort of fuel reduction fires compared with the heartache caused by a wildfire (remember '94?), the risk of which Spring burning will help minimise. I tried to call the SCC officer to discuss this, and I left several messages - to date he has not replied to me. Can I suggest in future that the SCC officer that takes these calls a) makes sure that they have the correct details before sending a complaint notice, b) checks with the Fire Warden to determine if the fire is authorised under another Act, c) explains to the complainant why people burn off in Spring and what the risks of not burning are, and d) returns phone calls. And, I do have a number of fuel reduction burns planned for the next few weeks, authorised under a permit and with the Rural Fire Brigade in attendance, to reduce Summer fire risk. I would thank my neighbour not to make complaints about those fires, and the SCC officer not to issue a complaints notice for a fire lit under the authority of another piece of legislation and for the public benefit. Not a joke or prank

About a year ago I became interested in cryptozoology. I am particularly interested in the phenomena of the ‘Yowie’, ‘Hairy Man’ or ‘Doolighal’. Through my research on the internet, I was overwhelmed at the number of reported sightings along the eastern seaboard. Reports from the earliest settlers and even stories from Aborigines, pre white man, are plentiful. From what I have read, there seems to be some real hot spot areas where these animals supposedly live, including Taree, Pilliga Scrub, Lamington National Park and particularly here in the Glass House Mountains, Kilcoy and Kenilworth. I am curious to know if these animals do or did in fact exist. I am starting to compile my own database regarding local sightings of these creatures and would dearly love to hear from people who have encountered, sighted or experienced unusual events that can’t be explained. I would love to speak to any local Aboriginal people to find out their stories that may have been re-told to them by elders. From what I gather the yowie is a nocturnal animal although there have been plenty of daylight sightings, especially early morning or dusk. They are territorial and mark their territory by making tee-pee like structures with broken branches or bend large saplings over and pin them under a low branch of another tree. I have seen video of a tree like this and it is most unusual as there is no explanation as to how the tree got like that. Obviously extremely large footprints are signs and there are thousands of those that have been plaster casted over many years. Although I have never encountered a yowie, they can grow up to eight to 10 feet tall and apparently they know you are there long before you know of their presence, hence the reason why one hasn’t been captured. They hide behind trees and stand very still peeking from the side just like a little child does when playing hide and seek which also explains why they are hard to photograph.

They can leave large marks in grassy areas where they have been taking a nap and also have a very pungent odour that smells something like a burning electrical smell crossed with rotten garbage. They also bite sizable chunks out of the side of trees trying to get to the ants in the heartwood. They communicate long distances by knocking branches against a tree trunk. These characteristics have been described many times from the top of Queensland right down to Victoria, but I have yet to see or find anything anywhere that resembles such. This is not a prank or a joke; I would really like to hear from anyone with their stories and will give my utmost attention, respect and discretion in this matter and would appreciate the same from those that decide to contact me. In reply to letters from bush walker and Lee-Ann Raddatz, I’d like readers to know the following: I am the proud photographer behind the winning image for the Beerwah Lions Business Directory, depicting the hinterland lifestyle and the Glasshouse Mountains. It's sad that a response is needed to address letters littered with misconceptions and narrow minded judgements. While your concerns are real, they have been directed at the wrong audience at the wrong time. This image was a planned photo shoot that took place in a beautiful setting for the purpose of capturing a moment in time that means something to the riders. The rider’s grandparents lived and worked the land underneath Mt Beerwah some 50 years ago. You've obviously both had bad experiences to put all riders/four-wheel-drives in the same basket, but these people you have labeled as careless vandals have more respect for the flora and fauna, and the area’s history than any local I know! Road registered dirt bikes are welcome in forest areas. The 10 year old simply joined his father for a harmless photo hence the clean bikes and riding gear! Riders don't bash through vegetation, they use pre-existing tracks to ride on. I don't see how illegal dumping is associated with trail bike riders – mattresses, green waste and fridges don't travel too well on a bike nor are bolt cutters carried in packs. Instead of being quick to judge and criticise, plan your concerns more thoroughly because they have left your chosen audience entertained and rolling their eyes. Renee Guthrie Photographer

Schools for the Community

Observing the modern educational facilities in Glasshouse Country district, it is interesting to reflect on the schools which past generations attended. Most consisted of only one classroom and a verandah, yet to local families they were an important community centre. There are delightful newspaper stories reflecting the versatile nature of those old school buildings. Many were the parties, concerts, balls, card nights and meetings held in the school room by community groups from surrounding districts. Crohamhurst School, opened in 1913, and was always a small school in terms of enrolment; but its importance to local residents is evident when we read of the many activities held there. This report is from the Chronicle, 11 January 1918: CROHAMHURST, NEW YEAR'S NIGHT ‘On New Year's Eve about sixty of the residents assembled at the State School in response to the invitation by the School Committee for the purpose of ushering in the present year. The building was tastefully decorated with palms and Chinese lanterns and the effect was most charming. The chairman, Mr J. Collins, in a few appropriate words bade the company welcome. Dancing was engaged in upstairs, the music being in the capable hands of Mr Norman Hedges, while Messrs Hume and Otto acted as MCs. Downstairs cards were an attraction, and as the night was warm, were well patronised. At 11 pm that most important of all functions, supper, especially when in the capable and generous dispensation of the ladies was served, and its attractions soon compelled the desertion of the ball room, and silence at the card tables. At midnight a bonfire was lit and its ruddy blaze illumined the grand old hills around, announcing that another year had faded into the past. The company gave expression to their mutual goodwill by joining hands in 'Auld Lang Syne.' ...The company broke up early, as notwithstanding the gaiety of the heart, that inexorable period known as milking time has surely to be taken in account.’ On Sunday, November 5, Peachester History Committee is hosting a Centenary Reunion at the Peachester Hall for Crohamhurst and Commissioner's Flat Schools – an opportunity to get together and share memories of the ‘good old days’ at these two former local schools.

The Lookout Cafe at Glass House Mountains has a lovely intimate feel like you are sitting relaxing on your back verandah catching up with friends (well if you have a back verandah with a truly spectacular view) where time has no meaning and there is none of life’s pressures. While they currently have a very compact kitchen they use every bit of space as creatively as possible and have quite an extensive menu for breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon tea, which includes vegetarian and gluten free items. One of their most popular lunch items is nachos, but they also do a great beef lasagne with salad, and one of my savoury favourites is their caramelised onion tart. And if I’m just popping in for a coffee with a friend, the Lookout Cafe always has some great

homemade sweet treats in their cake cabinet. While the ladies do a great job in the ‘rather small’ kitchen, they are all looking forward to the cafe undergoing a fabulous renovation / extension. The plan will see their kitchen size dramatically increase as well as having an inside air conditioned dining room for 24, which means they will have double the seating as they do now. If you haven’t already tried the Lookout Cafe – my advice is don’t wait until the renovations are complete – head up now for a chance to enjoy the serenity! For years Lynelle gave her friends and family massages when they were in pain and they always told her what healing hands she had. So seven years ago she decided to do some formal study and become qualified. QPWS reviews Mt Beerwah track safety and ups patrols

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will review risks at Mt Beerwah in the Glass House Mountains while increasing patrols to ensure compliance with closures now in place. QPWS Regional Director Peter Wright said the Mt Beerwah summit track remained closed since massive landslips in 2009 and 2010. “Geotechnical engineers advised QPWS to continue monitoring the settling of the debris and any changes in stability,” Mr Wright said. “Our monitoring indicated some settling of the debris. We intend to engage engineers again to update our information so we can assess the risks and decide on future management, including any changes to the access. Signage and fencing will also be reviewed. “Some of Mt Beerwah’s rock faces are columnar basalt (volcanic rock), and car-sized boulders can come down, especially after long wet periods. “Anyone who visits Mt Beerwah will see prominent signs warning not to attempt the summit track. Please observe those signs. If you don’t, you put yourself and others at risk and also face a fine of $440. “You can still enjoy the day-use area at the base of this impressive volcanic peak. www.gcnews.com.au

While safety is our first priority, ultimately it’s the visitor’s own responsibility. “This is a dynamic landscape and we continually review visitor sites. “Mt Beerwah summit track is currently the only track that’s closed. However, Mt Coonowrin is completely closed to visitors due to instability. “The Mt Ngungun track has been recently rebuilt with more than $150,000 worth of improvements, but walkers on that track should still wear good shoes – not thongs – and keep a close eye on children. “The 1.4km track to Mt Ngungun’s 253m summit provides spectacular views of the famous Glass House Mountains peaks, as well as the forests, farmland and waterways of the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Wright said. with the Superdads Recently I have had three good friends lose loved ones unexpectedly. While each of those were older people, after coming home from the hospital where I accompanied a mate to see his dad for the last time, I couldn't help but realise how much I take my family for granted. I have three precious kids and of course one gorgeous wife, who looks to me to help maintain a peaceful home and make decisions with their best interests in mind. They also love it when I decide that we are going to do something especially fun for the weekend. When was the last time you spent a day and a night with your kids, one on one? Friday afternoon I packed up the trailer with the dirt bikes, the camping fridge filled with coke, chocolate and chips, and the stretcher bunk beds. As soon as Wil (aged seven) got off the bus I told him to grab his riding gear and jump in the ute.

Ten minutes later we were unloading the bikes at our friend's property at Peachester and having a blast. I'm blessed to have a boy that loves what I love but he knows when I make an effort just for him and he talks about it for weeks to come. It's a little more challenging to think of where to take a 10-year-old daughter, so I let Lucy decide where we go and what we do on our ‘princess for a day’ dates. A full day / night spent with them individually seems to undo the 100 times I've had to nag them that month about any number of things so it's well worth the in investment. Unfortunately many kids are only noticed by their dads when they are doing something wrong. Rego label days are numbered

The days of scraping a registration label off the corner of the front windscreen are numbered, following a Newman Government decision to end the stickers. This will result in a more efficient and effective method of registering vehicles and save a considerable amount of money in postage and printing costs. Advances in technology means the detection of unregistered vehicles could be done using number plate recognition, rather than citing a sticker on the front windscreen. Motorists who own light vehicles will start to receive their last sticker before the labels are phased out on October 1, 2014.

There has been a hive of activity in Beerwah and Landsborough of late which is very pleasing to see. Work is well underway in Beerwah with the Simpson Street shared pathway upgrade on the railway side, and work has started on the shopfront side of Simpson Street as part of the Streetscape project (a joint project between the State Government and Council). Many of you would have also noticed traffic lights are close to completion at the Steve Irwin Way / Hardwood Road intersection, Landsborough. After community rallying over safety concerns I was able to liaise with the Transport Minister and local Main Roads Department, which resulted in the fast-tracking of these $1.5million traffic lights by up to two years. These lights should be operational in about a month and I will keep you informed of all updates.

Enid and Len Wilkinson, at ‘Royal Palms’ 192 Mons Road, Buderim are opening their garden as part of the ‘Open Gardens Australia’ scheme on October 26 and 27. Their garden reflects a love of collecting a wide range of what one would call subtropical foliage plants. Their north east facing, terraced property displays the very well maintained collection beautifully. There are drifts of bromeliad, borders of Acalypha, Croton, Heliconia and Cordylines whilst trees are festooned with epiphytic orchids and bromeliads. A great day was had by all, with jumping castles and a velcro sticky wall for the kids as well as presentation of participation awards and trophies. A big congratulations goes to Jack Farrugia who won the Sunshine Coast AFL U12’s “Best and Fairest” award for the League as well as winning the Club Award. And a special mention goes out to all the wonderful volunteers who have helped throughout the year. Without their assistance at training, on game day, or behind the scenes, our club wouldn’t function so smoothly. Contributed by Jenny Kelly More wonderful weather on Thursday brought 70 ladies out to play a Single Stroke event. We were able to play in three divisions and the winner of Division 1 was Mavis Brimelow who came in with a score of 72 Nett. Sue Williamson was runner up on 73 Nett. Mavis won a trophy kindly donated by Monica Dangerfield. Division 2 winner was Fay Wareham who scored a terrific 69 Nett. Teresa Keast, who also had a 69 Nett was unlucky to lose on a count back.

Sharon Phillips generously donated the trophy for Division 2. Winner of Division 3, Kim Thode who came in with a 74 Nett, collected a trophy kindly donated by Leith Barnes. Kim was closely followed by Marjorie Pavitt on 75 Nett. NTP's were won by Cath Cherry on 2, Brenda Briese on 5, Heather Coyle on 16 and Dawn Webster took out the 18th. On this day the Ladies President, hosts her special day, by inviting Lady Presidents from all the other clubs in the District with their teams, as well as the President and Committee of the Caboolture District Ladies Bowls Association. Though the weather was overcast and threatened rain, it was not enough to stop the event taking place. All had a good game of bowls followed by a luncheon which all enjoyed. Though the weather tried, it did not dampen the companionship and game that was enjoyed by all. Wednesday September 18. Ladies Bowls Day. The Ladies Pennant Team played Bribie Island. Glasshouse won one game and lost one. Unfortunately the margin was 11. In the social games of Pairs, Debbie Dale and Brian Larkin def Viv James and Maurie Dawes. Grahame Young and Margaret Lehmann drew with Margaret Porter and Dennis Hume. Thursday September 18. Open Pairs Bowls. Winners were Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson with 2 + 42. Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club Contributed by Club President John Hesse Bee Gees fielded three teams in the recent Sunshine Coast Football grand finals held at Maroochydore. All three teams played extremely well giving their all and the players can be extremely proud of their efforts. The day kicked off with the Under 15 Girls and Under 17 Boys playing at the same time. This made it difficult for our supporters as they had to switch between both games. Both games finished level at fulltime. Whilst this was disappointing for the players, they can be very satisfied with their efforts on the day and throughout the season. Our third grand final team was the Under 13 boys. The boys started their match confidently and were on top the whole way through and ran out well deserved winners 2-0. Congratulations boys – well done on the day and a great season. It’s time for a well earned rest now and a chance to get over those niggling injuries. We look forward to seeing everyone back again next season
