B
esides Christmas Day, this Friday is my second favourite public holiday of the year, yep the Maleny Show Holiday! As a kid I remember going to the local show with my family and then as I got older going to the Brisbane exhibition. Each year the displays and entertainment of Maleny Show brings that all back to me. And I am pretty sure that I am not alone. After reading the comments on our Facebook competition to win one of 10 family passes to the show, there were plenty of favourite parts of the show being Woodchop (this is on Saturday), rides, the animals, the show bags, the chickens, the cows and the horses. However I was surprised that I didn’t see the words dagwood and dog – or probably by the amount of people you see eating these gourmet delights at the show these days, it is more of a guilty secret pleasure! Hope to see you all at the show! If you think you see me lining up for a dagwood dog – that must just be someone who looks like me! The full show program is in the centre of this edition. Regards,

The streets of Maleny came alive last Thursday when well over 100 people turned up for the Domestic Violence Walk from Tesch Park to Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The group sang their way up the main street with a police escort and a variety of banners highlighting the theme, 'Not Now, Not Ever – Say No to Domestic Violence and Say Yes to Family Peace'. The event included an Acknowledgement of Country by Aunty Beverly Hand, and several speakers including Superintendent Darryl Johnson, in charge of the Sunshine Coast police district. He mentioned how determined police in this area are to respond to calls to ensure everyone's safety. Karen Marsh from Uniting Care Community, Men's group facilitator Rob Clark shared about the 'Say Yes to Family Peace' Initiative, and Robin Clayfield then led a simple ceremony involving an art instillation of crosses made by Barry Smith. A minutes silence and the placement of flowers supported a time of remembrance and healing. Inspirational Choir Leader Brian Martin then taught a heart opening song to accompany the walkers and off everyone went to the beat of a drum, singing, banners unfurled and t-shirts worn proudly to highlight the theme.

www.vacx.com.au The procession arrived at the Neighbourhood centre ready to hear Emily from Scope speak of the challenge of Domestic Violence. Brian Martin then preformed two pieces for the enjoyment of all, one accompanied by members of the 'Joy of Singing' Choir. The event culminated with Rob Clark launching the 'Say Yes to Family Peace' art project entitled 'Art for Family Peace'. A seven panel wall mural of 133 canvasses was unveiled for people to then participate in creating art and conversations together in support of the positive solutions to healthy families and relationships. Organisers were really happy with the day and thanked everyone for their support. The annual tradition of raising awareness of DV and solutions will continue next year.

We were looking to update the kitchen in our Queenslander, and as always wanted to support a local business. We couldn’t be happier that we chose Kev and his team! We appreciated that Kev listened to what we wanted, and offered lots of little tips and suggestions to really turn it into our dream kitchen. From my wanting a definite black and white theme to knowing the exact handles to suit my classic kitchen, he understood everything down to the smallest of details. Thank you Kev!

Glassy Awards a huge night of Last Monday, May 16, saw over 150 local business owners and employees from the Glass House electorate gather for a gala award night hosted by Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP. By all accounts, the inaugural event which tied in with Queensland Small Business Week, was a huge success. It was a wonderful way to publicly celebrate the amazing contribution small businesses and their employees make to the local community throughout the Glass House region. Dubbed ‘The Glassy’s’, the night was all about promoting and acknowledging small businesses and their employees as well as recognising their invaluable contribution in numerous ways to community life. The awards were spread over five regions; Palmwoods, Montville, Maleny, Glass House

Each category winner was awarded either a Bronze or a Silver ‘Glassy’; the Silver Glassy reflected the community nominated ‘most popular’ winner and the Bronze trophy in each category was awarded by the Chamber of Commerce in each individual region. While every nominated business and winner deserved recognition, an additional highlight of the awards was the presentation of the Gold Glassy to the overall winner selected by Andrew Powell from the nominated Bronze and Silver category winners. Concept IT from Maleny were the Gold Glassy winners in the business category, with their consistent delivery of excellent customer service, in a changing retail market service.

recognition for local businesses Jodie Pember from Glass House Mountains IGA won the employee category, which was very exciting news for the Glass House local to be the Gold Glassy winner for the entire region. Jodie, who has been with Glass House Mountains IGA for eight years, took out two awards on the night – the overall Gold Glassy and the Silver Glassy in the employee category for the Glass House Mountains Region. Speaking with Jodie after her win, she said she was both proud of her achievement as well as deeply appreciative of the support shown by her customers. “I was absolutely thrilled that customers took the time to vote for me in the first place and I love my job, the people I work with, and the customers I see every day,” she said. Owner of Glass House Mountains IGA, Mel Luke said Jodie was very deserving of the awards. “Jodie has been with us for many years and is a very important part of our business. She does an extremely good job and we are thrilled that she was nominated and won,” said Mel. “This award is great for Jodie and the Glass House community who benefit from her incredible communication and customer service skills.” In the Glass House Mountains Region other award winners in the Business category were Pasta D’Vine taking out Sharon from Easton Lawyers the Bronze Glassy and

Beerwah’s young boxing sensation Dana ‘Deadly’ Coolwell has triumphed again at the Australian Championships. Dana backed up his 2015 Australian 46kg Junior crown by taking out the Gold Medal in the 49kg Youth division at the Gold Coast tournament last week. The win places him in the box seat for selection in the Australian team to compete at the Youth World Titles in St Petersburg, Russia at the end of October. Dana, 17, is no stranger to international boxing. Last year he competed in the Junior World Titles in Russia, narrowly – and some would say controversially – going down to a fighter from Belarus. “It was a really great experience to go to Russia last year,” said Dana. “It made me realise that I needed to redouble my efforts and rethink how I prepare for the bigger bouts.” Stephen Pitt, Dana’s coach at the Hinterland Boxing Club is confident that Dana has put in the hard work to take him to the next level. “Dana has shown incredible resolve to improve his strength and tactical approach to boxing,” said Stephen. “He is now boxing under Olympic rules, with three by three minute rounds, and under a different scoring regime. “So it’s a real credit to Dana that he’s taken that all in his stride and achieved some fantastic results.” In a mark of respect for Dana’s talent, he was recently invited by former world champion Jeff
Dana with coach Stephen Pitt Fenech to travel to Sydney to spar against one of Fenech’s professional prodigy boxers – Brock Jarvis. “Sparring with someone older, heavier and more experienced was great,” said Dana. “He was a hard puncher, but I gave as good as I took.” Dana’s sights are squarely set on the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. “Next I move up to the men’s Elite division, with the aim of winning the 2018 Australian Championships at the end of next year, which double as the selection trials for the Commonwealth Games,” explained Dana. Asked if he’ll medal there… “That’s the plan,” he said with absolute confidence.

Maleny Dairies hosts local milk forum Last week, dairy farmers from far and wide came together to discuss how they can work together to help support and protect their industry. Organised by the Queensland Dairyfarmers Organisation (QDO) and Australian Dairy Farmers Limited (ADF), the forum was hosted by Maleny Dairies. With recent announcements that some large southern milk processors are going to slash prices paid to producers, the mood of the large crowd of farmers was predicably bitter. Dairy farmers are worried that due to falling prices offered in southern states, their milk will flood the local market, putting even more pressure on the fragile Queensland dairy industry. Supporting their cause at the forum was independent Queensland Senator Glenn Lazarus. Senator Lazarus was scathing about the attack on Queensland farmers. “When big foreign owned companies make decisions that hurt Australian businesses - it's Australian workers that suffer,” he said. “That is why I am determined to help Queensland dairy farmers affected by the milk price cuts. We must do everything we can to protect and support our dairy farmers. “It has been a busy and very productive day at Maleny Dairies, meeting with many of Queensland's dairy farmers to talk about how we can work together, to protect and support the industry. “The simple solution in all of this is for the Turnbull Government to stop large multi-national companies from screwing over smaller Australian

Senator Glenn Lazarus samples some of Maleny Dairies milk businesses. Our government has to start looking after our own! Since the year 2000 the Maleny area has lost two thirds of its dairy farms. I have given Queensland dairy farmers my commitment to take up their fight!” Maleny Dairies owner Ross Hopper was pleased for the Senator’s support. “A big thanks to Senator Glenn Lazarus who spent the day up at Maleny Dairies talking at a gathering of our hard working South East Queensland dairy farmers,” he said. “We are very proud to have Glenn support our products and our local farmers in South East Queensland.” With only 430 dairy farms left in Queensland – down from 1,500 only 15 years ago – the local industry needs as much support as we can give if it is to survive.
Still Stompin’ Come on, you know you want to! For nearly two years Julie Allen has been teaching her unique funky dance aerobics class on a Wednesday afternoon in Maleny. With some of the students travelling from Beerwah to attend, Julie decided to start running a 10.30am class at the Landsborough Hall … and she is really looking forward to continuing sharing in the fun and success of her students. One of the ladies who has attended every class has summed up the experience by saying … “I just don’t know what I would do without this class.” Julie said it isn’t just about doing exercise but about coming along, having fun, having those good endorphins kick in and then walking out the door with a smile on your dial. A friend of Julie once shared some very wise words that have stuck with her. ‘You don’t stop dancing because you grow old … you grow old because you stop dancing!’ New students who join our group find the atmosphere is very welcoming, and Julie is keen to reinforce that the classes are definitely not a “glam Lorna Jayne style group.” Clothing is all about practicality and comfort. This philosophy is clearly part of Julie’s approach to the classes. With all ages welcome, she really likes to encourage older clients, ladies and gents to come along and give it a go. Bulldogs goes pink Beerwah Bulldogs junior rugby league is preparing to pink up for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA)’s annual Pink Sports Day on Saturday, June 11. Pink Sports Day is an opportunity for sporting groups around Australia to show their support for, and pay tribute to, people in their local community who have been affected by breast cancer. Last year more than 1,200 clubs across Australia took part to show their support for Australians affected by breast cancer. This year Beerwah bulldogs will join sporting groups nationwide as they rally together in a bid to raise $500,000 for Australians affected by breast cancer. Kristy Mcclellan from Beerwah Bulldogs is urging the local community to get behind this Pink Sports Day. “Pink Sports Day is a great opportunity for the whole community to head down to our club house and support not only the teams competing on the day, but also those in the local
community, who have been affected by breast cancer,” Kristy said. “We hope that everyone will come together, pink up and get behind the teams as they play for a great cause. For more information on our involvement with pink sports day please contact Kristy Mcclellan on 0412 340 518. Funds raised from Pink Sports Day will go directly to BCNA to support its work in ensuring Australians diagnosed with breast cancer receive the very best support, information, treatment and care appropriate to their individual needs.
Gambling fund grant success Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has congratulated Landsborough Cricket Club, Mooloolah Hinterland Churches Soccer Club, and Mooloolah Valley Community Association who will receive a helping hand to purchase vital equipment through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. with Constable Susan Lowndes Turn the Screws on Crime On Saturday, June 18 from 9.00am to 11.00am you can have your vehicle number plate screws changed to non-reversible screws for FREE at the Glass House Mountains State School on Coonowrin Road. The screws help to prevent the theft of number plates, which are often used on vehicles involved in further offences. The theft of number plates is also a nuisance for the vehicle owner who then has to pay for replacement plates. Thanks to our local Neighbourhood Watch group who successfully applied for a grant for the screws and the local Lions group for their assistance in changing over the screws. If you can’t make it on this date, stay tuned for another opportunity in the Landsborough Mooloolah area, in a couple of months.
Forestry Parties Police are aware of large numbers of people attending organised events in the forestry areas of our division and would like to remind both party goers and their parents that these events are not legal. The organisers and attendees are committing a number of offences under Nature Conservation Regulation and/or the Forestry Act. Offences include conducting
an unauthorised event, unauthorised use of generators, causing disturbance with amplifiers and leaving rubbish. On the spot fines range from $250.00 to almost $1,200 for the various offences. The events themselves pose serious risk to those attending as the access to the areas they are held in is often impassable to vehicle traffic, meaning that an ambulance would not be able to gain access in the event of an emergency, possibly leading to serious consequences. While the attitude of many may be that they are out in the forestry, and not harming anyone, the reality is that they are both damaging the natural environment and putting themselves at risk of both physical and sexual assault, due to the isolated nature of the events. Intoxicated people walking along narrow unlit roads in the area, with a high number of vehicles (a significant number being driven by inexperienced drivers) only adds to the general level of risk involved. Each of the Beerwah Hair and Beauty customers who purchased a gift voucher for their mums for Mother’s Day went into the draw for a very special prize of a gift pack of ASAP skin care products to the value of $153.00. The lucky winner was Julie Smith from Beerwah whose daughter Bodie reckons her mum is the most incredible and selfless person she has ever met. “She is always willing to lend a hand and she always approaches life with a smile and positive attitude and if I grow up to be half the mum my mum is I will be incredibly happy,” she said Bodie and Julie have been clients of Beerwah Hair and Beauty for over 10 years. “We absolutely love all the beautiful ladies at Beerwah Hair and Beauty and we won’t go anywhere else,” they said. Business owner Vicki Heading said she was “thrilled to have Julie as our lucky winner.”
Maleny Commerce Update With Spencer Shaw Last week was Small Business Week in Queensland and it was great to see the businesses of the Hinterland come together and celebrate at the Glasshouse Small Business Awards. These awards were jointly run by MP Andrew Powell, Maleny Commerce, Montville Chamber of Commerce, Glasshouse Mountains Chamber of Commerce and Caboolture Chamber of Commerce. Congratulations to all the winners (particularly the Maleny ones!) and to all who participated. There are so many good businesses that the voting can be tricky at times, but importantly it’s a good excuse to come together and celebrate small business in our region, and through this, promote our great culture of working together. June is also going to be a big month for us with a meet the candidate’s event for the upcoming Federal Election planned for mid to late in the month. Our networking breakfast for this month will be hosted by the iconic Colin James Fine Foods and our presenter is Natalie Cook from the Small Business Project on Tuesday, June 14. Visit our website www.malenycommerce.org.au for more info on both of these events. Maleny Commerce Networking Breakfasts give an opportunity for a wide range of people in our businesses and wider community to come together on a regular basis. They’re fertile ground for exchange of ideas, opportunities and the latest news. One of the great strengths of our business community is its diversity and I’m proud of the role Maleny Commerce plays in this. The Maleny Show is coming up this weekend. Thanks to those businesses on Maple Street who have wholeheartedly embraced the window dressing competition, with many fantastic displays covering our theme of Renew, Reuse, Recycle. It’s great to see the collaboration in our town and to get behind the 79th Maleny Show. A great event coming up on June 10, 11 and 12 is the inaugural Knitfest, the Yarn and Fibre Art Festival, which brings even more colour, creativity and art to Maleny.
Shoes@Beerwah owner, Tracie, knew the May Naot competition (buy any of the Naot brand to go into the draw to win another pair of Naots) would be popular. She was excited when local Judy Keays was drawn on May 12. Having recently purchased two pairs of the stylish and comfortable brand for work, Judy was so thrilled her name was drawn first. She was so pleased to see them open last year, and that they stock shoes for all occasions. Being a firm regular in using local businesses is very important to Judy, having volunteered in the community for many years. She knows how much local businesses get behind the schools, sports and community groups in the area, and believes it’s so important to reciprocate that support. Judy happily walked out the door in a chic pair of Naot red shoes, urged on by Bernie and Tracie to choose something she wouldn’t usually pick – what a winner!

Knitfest - queens of recycling
Knitfest is a unique three-day festival to be held in Maleny from June 10 -12 with an interesting life-cycle story around its use of yarn. Festival Director Debs Swain says she’s become an avid recycler since moving to Maleny, 31 years ago. “This whole event has been built around the desire to recycle and repurpose leftover yarn,” she said. “The Knitfest team are the craftiest recyclers ever! They have taken unwanted yarn, unfinished knitting and crochet projects, yarn from deceased estates and donated yarns, to put together enough pieces to yarnbomb the main street of their picturesque hinterland town of Maleny.” Yarnbombing, also known as Guerilla Knitting, started in the USA as a way to use up leftover yarn and decorate cold inanimate objects to beautify them. Nothing goes to waste. “We never unpick unfinished projects but instead, add to them and repurpose them into something else,” she said. “If we get a shawl or rug with holes in them, we either mend them or add a crocheted flower to cover the holes so they take on a new life”. Knitfest has a team of highly skilled yarn artisans, meeting each week at the Maleny Library who have not only created a myriad of pieces to decorate the town during the festival, but they also teach newcomers to knit and crochet, so that everyone can get involved. They also have a lovely lot of ladies who can't leave their homes so their caregivers take out wool from Knitfest each week and return with lovely pieces the ladies at home have made. They no longer feel invisible but a valuable part of a huge project. Many people have asked what will happen to all the yarnbombing after the Festival is over? Any pieces that can be used again for next year will be saved and be added to next year. Anything in excellent condition will be given to Busy Needles, a group who send knitted items to age care, homeless and low economic families through the Salvation Army, premature babies and also to groups who take clothing out to indigenous communities. Some of the knee rugs will be donated to elderly nursing homes. Some pieces are near the end of their life but still useable for animal shelters for blankets and bedding, so they will be sewn together to be sent to various shelters. They don't waste anything. There will be a box in Knitfest Central (RSL Hall) for new, handmade items and toys etc to be donated. The decorations will start going up a few days before the event and taken down the day after it ends. Knitfest aims to promote yarn and fibre arts, the artists involved, as well as the small regional town of Maleny and all its many tourist attractions. The festival includes 16 workshops from prominent fibre artists and tree cosy competitions where community groups or individuals and businesses, can choose a tree to decorate. There are also competitions for best beanie, best scarf / shawl /socks and best tea cosy. All entries are only $5.00 and you could win $200.00 first prize. The program guide, and all information on how to get involved, volunteer, book a workshop or enter the competitions, is on their website www.knitfest.com.au.
Going global from little ole Business feature Landsborough!
Tyler Maclaren, global business manager has been assigned the task to get local manufacturing company, Transportable Shade Sheds on the world stage. The now famous Landsborough creation ‘Transportable Shade Sheds’ was invented 16 years ago, and the company has had major success in Australia over the years. Products have been sold in each state and territory of Australia as well as New Zealand, New Caledonia, Papa New Guinea and Singapore. Transitioning into the vast international market, a new export deal involving up to 800 sheds has been secured, with the capacity to supply the Landsborough-made product to another 22 countries. The first two units have already been shipped to South Africa. The export deal has coincided with Transportable Shade Sheds’ busiest time too, being the end of financial year. While many small businesses, government departments and not for profit organisations are also looking to buy before June 30, Tyler and the team will not be taking a backwards step. “Buying a Transportable Shade Shed for your small business now means you can claim it and see the tax benefits sooner than other periods throughout the year,” said Tyler. “We have already expanded rapidly over the last 12 months, this deal has just bolstered our teams confidence in the business plan and made us even more determined. “We are currently rolling out a huge distributor network here in Australia, our focus is still within this country at the moment, but the cogs are starting to turn overseas,” he continued. “Within the next couple of years, what we are doing here in Australia is what we will be doing in America, and by then I’m sure we will have plans on penetrating the European market too! Our intention is to become the world’s largest shade manufacturer and we are well on our way to making that happen.” Their growth seems to have come at a great time with the expansion through the Saver6.com network. Imagine a business where seeking out your customers, is greatly assisted by others that work behind the scenes. Business is no longer difficult thanks to the Saver6.com revolutionary support system that facilitates training for anyone wanting to be their own boss in a face-to-face learning environment and matching real product choices with skill sets. The ongoing, supportive business model works with each business owner so that the focus is on supporting the business owner’s success through sales training that increases through direct target marketing, mentoring, motivation and goals. “You’ve got to think outside of the box in business these days and we are extremely lucky that our director is an innovator and an adventurer. “This recent global export deal is one of many that we plan on securing, and our business is growing in leaps and bounds with the Saver6.com joint venture. “Saver6’s motto is ‘expose yourself globally’ and we are living breathing proof that it works.” If you are looking at getting a great deal on an end of financial year deal for your business, or you wish to learn more about the Saver6.com business network, call Transportable Shade Sheds at Landsborough on 5494 8027 or the Saver6 team direct on 5405 3602 today.

Magnificent Dog Shows
Contributed by Helen Weil Recently the Beerwah Sportsground was ‘doggie central’ when the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club held a total of four dog shows beginning with the first on Friday night, then again Saturday night and finally two shows on Sunday. What was magnificent? Just about everything - including the entry and turn out of exhibitors and dogs, the weather, the canteen catering, the smooth efficient running of the shows, the friendly atmosphere and the support shown by a growing number of visitors. Overall it was a really successful weekend for our club. The top winning dogs varied each time. On Friday Best in Show was awarded to a Lowchen from the Toy Group. Saturday’s Best in Show was another from the Toy Group but this time an Affenpinscher. Sunday’s Best in Show for the Championship Show was a Golden Retriever from the Gundog Group and for the Open Show, a miniature long-haired Dachshund from the Hound Group. The photo is of the Best Baby Puppy in Show
Staying safe (three to six months of age) on Friday night. It is a beautiful baby Chow. As can be seen in the photo the night was very cool and a distinct layer of fog settled over the grounds. This was a good indicator that we could expect perfect weather for the next day and we did have ideal dog showing conditions for the rest of the weekend. We thank the Junior Rugby League for the excellent canteen service they provided. The delicious food was one of the highlights for both the daytime exhibitors and those who braved camping for the whole weekend. All in all, a great weekend for all who came to Beerwah Sportsground.

Maleny Staff book reviews A suitcase and a spatula by Tori Haschka (2013), photography by Isobel Wield, illustrated by Andrea Turvey. This is a visual delight for food lovers. Australian food and travel writer, Tori Haschka, takes her readers on a whirlwind adventure to international gourmet hotspots. With comfort being a prerequisite for every meal, readers will be immersed in scrumptious delight. Playing with fire by Tess Gerritsen (2015). This is her newest standalone novel. The plot is quite unique alternating between past and present times with the story opening with violinist Julia Ansdell purchasing an old music book from an antique shop in Rome. Inside the book, she discovers a loose sheet of paper that has a handwritten waltz. When she returns home to her family, she finds things happening in her life that she cannot explain and it all begins when she first plays the waltz on her violin. As Julia's story unfolds in the present day, the history of the alliance of Nazism with Mussolini during World War II begins to unfold as well. I would recommend to those who enjoyed the book Sarah’s Key.
Contributed by Pauline Clarke At the Glass House Country View Club luncheon meeting on Wednesday, May 18 our speaker was Constable Susan Lowndes from Beerwah Police Station. Susan gave us many tips on staying safe within the home and community as well as discussing the ever increasing scams that we receive via emails. Thanks Susan for a very interesting and informative talk. Our president Linda Flanagan presented Lyn Moss with her 10 year pin. Well done Lyn; we now have quite a number of 10 year members in our club. Our next outing will be a picnic in the grounds of the Glass House Information Centre at 10.00am on Wednesday, June 1. Wednesday, June 15 (10.30am for 11.00am) will be our 13th birthday party where the theme will be Rock ‘n Roll. We are expecting quite a turnout this year including guests from other View Clubs. If you can remember back to the ‘good ol’days’ you will know what to wear! During this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations we heard from many students whose lives were dramatically changed by the financial support they received from the Learning for Life program. This is the feedback that encourages us to continue raising money to support under privileged Australian children with their schooling. We always welcome new members; just turn up to one of our meetings or outings or for more information please phone Lynda on 5494 7875 or Maree on 5494 6956.
Remember me (2010), directed by Allen Coulter, written by William Fetters. This is a romantic drama that portrays the stories of main characters Tyler (Robert Pattinson) and Ally (Emily de Ravin), in the lead up to September 11. Tyler, a troubled young man dealing with the volatile relationship with his father and brother’s suicide, falls for Ally, a teenager dealing with the devastation of her mother’s murder and her controlling father. This poignant film will leave its viewers contemplating the effect of their life on others and the importance of living each moment in its fullness. Born survivors, by Wendy Holden (2015). This book is an account of three women who not only survived the terror of the Holocaust, but also conceived and delivered their babies in horrific circumstances. Miraculously, the babies also survived. Was it their tenacity, sheer luck or the hand of God? Their emotional meeting later in life is a highlight of the story.

Meet Nick Xenophon at Maleny Senator Nick Xenophon has chosen Maleny as one of his major Queensland stops as part of his Nick Xenophon Team’s election campaign. This Saturday (May 28), Nick will be joined by his Queensland Senate candidates Suzanne Grant and Daniel Crow to meet with local supporters and discuss the Nick Xenophon Team’s core issues. “I’ll be focusing on our major platforms of Predatory Gambling, Australian Made and Australian Owned and Government and Corporate Accountability when we meet with our local supporters and of course the good folk of Maleny,” Nick said. “We are all about listening to the community and solving problems without the ideological constraints the major parties have. “We are not left or right and will only make decisions on what is right or wrong for Australia based on a sensible centrist approach,” Nick said. Leading Nick Xenophon Team Queensland Senate candidate Suzanne Grant said the Team’s platform of supporting Australian Made is particularly relevant to the Maleny community. “We know that local industries, particularly in the dairy industry, have had a significant battle over the years against foreign owned multinational corporations which have driven down the farm gate price for their produce,” Suzanne said. “We’re also focused on trying to minimise the significant human cost that predatory gambling, particularly poker machines and online betting sites, place on the community.” Nick and Suzanne invite all locals to come and meet with them at Sarah’s Unplugged café, Maple Street from 10.00am on Saturday, May 28.

Gay and I live here on the Sunshine Coast enjoying the lifestyle and the natural environment with beautiful bush and beaches. We have two adult sons living in Sydney and Brisbane which keeps us abreast of the challenges of affordable housing and congestion in our major cities. I have qualifications in economics, business, public sector management and training having been a manager, consultant, teacher and leadership coach in the private and public sectors. I joined The Greens as I felt they had the vision and courage to take action to create a different future. The Greens have the best outcomes for the people and the environment in mind as their actions are underpinned by values of grass roots democracy, ecological sustainability, peace and non-violence and social justice. This courage and vision to take action can be seen in policies addressing global warming, asylum seekers and the new economy. I believe the Sunshine Coast faces many challenges with development pressures, population growth, loss of habitat and the impacts of global warming. The Sunshine Coast needs to keep its green edge sustaining the natural environment and transitioning into a new green economy with green jobs. It will be necessary to diversify the region’s economy and invest in transport infrastructure like the duplication of the rail to Nambour. I would be a strong advocate for the people of Fisher in Canberra as part of a progressive party, serious about Australia’s future. I advocate a balanced approach for community health and wellbeing and prosperity. I believe the social, cultural, economic and environmental matters all need to be considered in the decisions of our federal parliament if we are going to make fair laws for the Australian people. In addition, I believe we need a fairer, more compassionate, caring and productive society with more spending on public education, health care and public transport. The Greens policies are fully costed and will tackle inequality through a fairer a tax system. I look forward to listening to you.
Name
My name is LB Joum, but most call me Joum. The 'LB' part of my name is used on paper only, but if you want to call me LB or Mr Joum, I answer to those as well. Self employed in electrics and electronics for the better part of 20 years, I currently specialise in crane-control electrics and computer systems, but consider myself a maker, inventor, innovator and philosopher. I am a published author of the philosophical ontology called ‘Life Being’, and continue to write and explore the implications of my philosophy. Part of this philosophy recognises how the essence of a society is moulded by its systems – like law, currency and governance. I am driven to engage with politics because I saw that people had become disengaged, disillusioned and mistrusting of government. Therefore, the inventor in me looked for a solution, and what I came up with was a way to use the internet to give Australians control of a politician in parliament. Then I discovered that there were already other people working on this, so I joined the Online Direct Democracy Party. Because not many people know of this idea, I undertook to 'carry the torch' by becoming a candidate for the Senate in 2013. In that election I found that I didn't really get the chance to talk to people whereas the House of Reps candidates did. Hence, my decision to run for the seat of Fisher in this election. It is pointless to tell you what I stand for because, if elected, I would have no say in how I would vote in parliament. The Online Direct Democracy Party only has one policy – and that is to determine what Registered Voting Australians want through the www.PollyWeb. org platform and to follow those instructions in parliament. I have also been involved in a range of volunteer activities, including being Head of Amenities Cleaning Department (The Intergalactic S-Bend Warriors) at the Woodford Folk Festival for 14 years; so I know how to deal with the dirtier side of people.
Budget explained at Maleny forum Labor Candidate for Fisher, Bill Gissane, and Labor Candidate for Fairfax, Scott Anderson, hosted a community post-budget forum at the Maleny Community Centre last Monday night. On hand to unpick the 2016 federal budget was Shadow Assistant Treasurer, Dr Andrew Leigh MP. Dr Leigh, the Member for Fraser in the ACT, is well acquainted with the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland as his late grandfather Roly retired to Caloundra. Environment From land clearing to tree planting
Maleny resident Bryce Matthews says he can’t stand being inside too much. During one of his daily walks, 87-year-old Bryce was invited to join a group of people doing some work in the local park. The group turned out to be the Community Nature Conservation Program’s Bridge Creek Bush Care crew. “They invited me for a cuppa and told me about what they were doing,” Bryce said. “They seemed like a nice bunch and said I was welcome to join them for smoko anytime…but I’m the type who likes to pull my weight so I decided I’d better come along and give them a hand. “I like to mess about in the garden. Although it’s a far cry from chaining scrub and the land clearing of my past, I really enjoy planting with the group and putting the boxes around the trees.” Volunteers Sally Watter and Keith Valentine worked with Sunshine Coast Council to establish the group early last year when they decided they wanted do something about the weedy, overgrown local park. “On our first work day we planted 500 trees,” Sally said. “It was pouring rain and we were dripping wet and dirty when we finished, but we felt an incredible sense of pride and achievement. “We meet monthly now and plant around 100 tubestock each time. So far, we have planted more than 1800 local native rainforest trees and shrubs.” “Bryce is a great motivator and we’re just happy to have him as part of our group. “Just like any of our volunteers, he is welcome to spend as much or as little time with us as he can,” Sally said. Visit council’s website www.sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au for more information on volunteering. Bryce Matthews and Keith Valentine (right) with rainforest tubestock for planting
Ground yourself with groundcovers When we think of local native plants we often think of just the trees and shrubs, but South East Queensland is rich in its diversity of local native plants that can be used as groundcovers in your garden. At Forest Heart we’re bringing into cultivation and stocking a great range of local native groundcovers that includes Native Plumbago, Native Mint’s, Sunray, Yellow Buttons, Blue Harebells, Koala Bells, Fan flowers, Goodenias, Hibbertias, Pink Tongue, Paper Daisies, Lobelias, Flax lilies, Lomandra’s, Kangaroo Grass, Poa, Maidenhair Ferns, Rasp Ferns and more. Add to this mix some other great native groundcovers including Casuarina Cousin It, Prostrate Bacon and Eggs and an ever growing range and there’s plenty of choice for planting native plants in your garden. Do yourself a favour and plant native plants, they’re good value, diverse in form and shape, beautiful and great for the local environment.
Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Children in the rainforest
with Sue Tanner As one of the guides in the rainforest, I went for a walk on Monday last, with a group of Year 3 children from a Brisbane school. I was struck again by the enthusiasm of kids when they come for a visit. Little ‘eagle eyes’ spot all kinds of things. On this walk we found six pademelons, a whip bird, a tree creeper, several white browed scrub wrens and even the elusive noisy pitta, not to mention the ever fascinating fungi. They are so full of questions and the big thankyou we get at the end of the walk makes it all worthwhile. We are always looking for new guides. If you love the rainforest and want to help children appreciate and care for our environment, this is a job for you. Phone Michael Gillies or Sue Aspland at the education centre, 5429 6122, for information. All the old buildings have now been demolished and the sod turning ceremony for the new development was held Friday, May 20. The temporary Education Centre is working well with the vollies enjoying the view over the mountains from their desk. Mother’s Day was very busy, as usual, with lots of families barbecuing and then going for a walk. The Friends of Mary Cairncross were at the Wood Expo over the long weekend and, like all the other exhibitors, we had a good Saturday, a soaking wet Sunday (I wimped out and went home) and a fabulous Monday with lots of sunshine and plenty of mud. Congratulation Barung – another great job. Volunteer Rae in the Best wishes to ‘The Boss’ who has recently tem porary centre been in hospital. Beerwah IGA have just recently introduced a new range of ready to go meal options that have been created to fit around the often hectic life schedules of customers. The new range ‘Your Kitchen’ meal solutions have been made with quality eating convenience in mind for both families and individuals. The range caters for a wide span of tastes, with dishes inspired by International cuisines including Asian, Indian and Italian, amongst others. “We know that our customers lead busy lives, so it’s not surprising that often meal preparation can fall by the wayside. The family friendly range includes pasta, pizza, soup and fresh salads and provides an innovative solution that will appeal directly to those with limited time, but who also don’t want to compromise on quality and taste.
Holidays CLOSED fo- r14th June
Brazilian Chef Wilson Aguiar is giving a new cooking lesson at Beerwah Green Tower Market on June 4 inside the CWA Hall. You will be able to learn the famous Brazilian cheese puff recipe: gluten, wheat and yeast free. The class will take 90 minutes, and starts at 10.00am. Students will need to bring their own container as there might be some left overs to take home, bring a pen to take notes and wear comfortable clothes. Tapioca crepes use hydrated starch made from the cassava plant as its base: gluten, oil, milk and butter free Tapioca is cultivated in tropical areas. Specifically in Brazil it's the main food for the indigenous people. You can make savoury and sweet crepes with tapioca starch. Naturally low in fat and low in sodium which is great to maintain a healthy heart and blood pressure. Tapioca cheese breads or Pão de Queijo is a traditional Brazilian nibble from the region of Minas Gerais. They can be enjoyed for meals or as an appetiser served with wine, beer, or juices along with dips and sauces or even soup. Different ingredients can be added to the dough in order to gain flavours and colours. Bookings are essential and can be made up to June 2 via 0434 081 086 or delightsrio@gmail.com. Cost is $30.00. School News Sweet support for Chappy Glasshouse Christian College on show Contributed by Debbie Ives Beerwah State School students and staff were able to enjoy a special treat of a home baked cupcake from the Chappy's Cupcake Stall. The fundraiser helps to support Chaplain Linda to provide social, emotional and spiritual support to all students. Chappy Linda runs a lunchtime program all year around with small groups to support students with friendship skills, selfesteem or just being a listening ear for students when going through tough times. Chappy also organises big school days with focus on Bullying and Day for Daniel. Fundraising and having fun are also part of chappy's role including this week's Annual Cupcake Stall which was very popular with all.
Contributed by Sandy Johnson Glasshouse Christian College Open Day was a huge success and the College wants to thank everyone who attended. There were young families visiting for the first time, elderly couples who wanted to learn more about the local school and parents of current families supporting their children in various performances. The Prep to Year 12 campus is now so large the College booked a train to take people around the school, from the new Year 1 and 2 classrooms, right up to the specially fitted engineering workshops in secondary. The animal nursery was popular with young and old and highlighted the College’s thriving Agricultural Science subject. GCC’s Ag students regularly win prizes and just took out Grand Champion for the heaviest plant at the University of Queensland’s Gatton campus. Each primary classroom displayed student work and the teachers enjoyed chatting about learning innovations and how technology is carefully balanced with core skills such as reading and writing. Secondary departments showed off their subjects with creativity. At the Humanities stand visitors could print their name on a pyramid in ancient hieroglyphics, Science experiments abounded in and outside the laboratories, Drama students showed off circus skills and the robots in the Business and Technology classrooms could have been directly related to Ar2d2.
Are you looking ahead? Enrol now for Prep in 2017
A highlight of the day was the student performances. Little Voices, the lower primary choir, gave a mini concert in the theatre to a packed audience full of proud mums, dads and grandparents. A huge crowd also gathered on the grassy lawn outside the library to watch the primary, middle and senior Dance troupes. The Hospitality Courtyard was a popular venue. The line-up of live music combined with tasty treats served by students, made it the perfect place to chat with friends and enjoy the beautiful day. See more photos on page 24.
Big rewards for ‘out of the box’ thinking A group of Year 12 students from Grace Lutheran College, Caboolture Campus have presented a winning business strategy to take home more than $8,000 in cash and prizes at the QUT Student Business Competition. The competition requires students to work as a team to tackle a real world problem and Dr Noel Tracey from the QUT Business School said this year’s topic was a tough one. “With the buzz around the new IKEA store opening at North Lakes, we knew the students would be excited to take on a case study that involved an international icon, but with a very local impact,” he said. The Grace Lutheran students beat 11 teams from across the region using contemporary business theory to identify possible concerns about IKEA entering the community; they then developed solutions to negate those issues. Given just three hours to tackle the case study, the students then had to present to a panel of judges from QUT, the local business community and a representative from IKEA. Monique Atwell, the coach of the winning team, said that the students worked well together during the three hours and she was impressed by their ability to think outside the box. “The students thought the main issues facing IKEA were around sustainability, traffic congestion at North Lakes and the implications for other local businesses.” “All 12 teams presented at a level I would expect from university students and I look forward to hearing what some of them go on to achieve after high school.”

Maleny has become home this week to the first 'Art for Family Peace' Mural, launched by Rob Clark and the 'Say Yes to Family Peace' Initiative at the culmination of the Domestic Violence and Family Peace Walk in Maleny last Thursday. This innovative response to DV aims to use art, themed conversations, education and referrals to beneficial programs, as the vehicle to enable positive change and increasing awareness of the good work being done. People from all walks of life have been participating in the project at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, including students, parents and children, couples and single people, artists, novices and people with different needs. They've been painting, scribing and embellishing the mural with patterns within a set pallet of colours. Aprons and gloves are provided to keep everyone clean and lots of fun and laughter can be heard as people relax into being creative. The project will run all week and anyone can turn up and start painting with Rob's guidance and encouragement. There are 133 canvasses in total, all joined together and spread out in a graceful curve across the seven panel wall. All are for sale or for silent auction to raise money for the project and to support people to attend the variety of helpful and relevant programs that have proven to make a difference in people's lives, families and relationships. Eventually the project aims to fund people to not only attend these programs, but to also provide funds for childcare or pet sitting, so men and women can attend workshops or healthy relationship retreats, for example. "We've created a beautiful environment where people can relax, create and connect. Conversations naturally arise in the context of the project," said Rob. "For example, what creates family peace, what supports healthy relationships, what supports people to feel a sense of belonging in the community?” he said while mixing pots of colour for the next layer. “When we use the word family here we mean the entire human family in all its modern day variations, not just the traditional definition of family. So this is an all inclusive initiative.” Rob, his partner Robin Clayfield, and their dynamic team invite people in the community to be involved in this growing movement imagineering a positive, solutions based approach to stand alongside the current narrative. “We don't demonstrate against anyone or anything,” Rob said. “Rather, we illustrate for Family Peace.” Join in the mural painting or buy a canvas by contacting Rob 0414 315 399.

Pastel Society
The Pastel Society of Australia Sunshine Coast group's May meeting guest was Phil Holden of Holden's Gallery in Maleny. With his 37 years in the framing industry and business, Phil is very well qualified to explain many of the intricacies regarding framing of photos, memorabilia, and artwork of different mediums including pastels. With his examples of framing, mattes, etc being circulated around, a group of 33 members and visitors learnt a great deal at this meeting. A very informative evening and many thanks to Phil at Holden's Gallery. This group meets from 6.30pm on the 3rd Wednesday evening of each month at the Woombye Community Hall. The next meeting will be on June 15 and visitors are welcome.
Beerwah Writers Group
Contributed by John Wright The group has been discussing the publication of Neville’s latest publication ‘Tales from the Life I Lived’. It is a 424 page collection of events that is subtitled ‘An Old Man’s Ramblings’. These Ramblings are dedicated to a bygone era when life was simpler, but not necessarily better. With an eye-catching cover and a neat, racy format it will be released very soon. ‘Storm’ was the topic for our presentation of stories with some notable contributions. John B introduced a Hurricane via an episode written in the first person by the Hurricane itself. Ceredwyn presented ‘Sally’, a short story that was shortlisted for a Literary Award in the USA. Of the 11 presentations, nine focussed on the destructive nature of storms – both Trevor and Bob B gave credit to the beneficial effects of the rainfall. Due to some former members departing to other locations, we now have the opportunity to advise that some new members would be welcome. Annual membership is $5.00. For more information telephone Paul Stevens on 5438 7910 or look at our website beerwahwriters. com. Our next meeting will be on Friday, June 10 at 10.00am at the Beerwah Library.
Supporting artists and connecting communities
Open Studios Weekend
On the last weekend of this month, on May 28 and 29, five Arts Connect Inc. artist studios will be open to the public. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the artistic space first hand and to engage with local Hinterland artists in their creative environment. Come along and meet local artists Heather Gall, Judi Parkinson, Deann Cumner, Annie McIntosh and Barb Willcocks. Open studios are a wonderful way to gain insight into how these artists create their work and this month visitors can experience a variety of mediums and genres through visiting the artist trail. Our artists are always happy to share their working space with visitors, talk about their processes and techniques and their beautiful artworks are available for sale. Go to www.artsconnectinc.com.au to download the map and directions and start your journey through the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland to explore and enjoy these unique art spaces! Emerging artist Annie McIntosh (Annie McArt) is new to the program and is the feature artist for this month. Annie was born and formally educated in Melbourne, and then lived for many years in New Zealand with her husband and two sons, and now lives in Peachester. Art has always been a part of her world, both professionally and personally, starting with her role as medical technologist staining cells and tissues, to designing and making textile art and
now painting. She is often inspired by photos she has taken on travels, or images found by others. A colour, a texture or surprising shape. It often seems to be that on holidays, away from routine, you can take time to really look at and wonder over architecture, people, and nature. Then the ideas simmer away inside, until she has attempted to capture the mood, the thought or the beauty of what she has seen. It’s not only the big things that inspire but it might be a rock or a leaf catching the sun, or the sunlight glinting on rocks in the river. Her large garden is a constant source both of solitude and vitality— the rambling plants, the light and shade, the enormous variety of life. Annie lives on a farm just outside of Peachester located at 492 River Road Peachester, 4519.
All location details and information about the artists can be found at the Arts Connect website www.artsconnectinc.com.au

Out & About The glamorous Glassys
Maja and Siobhan from Maleny Optical
It was standing room only at the Big Barrel, home to Maleny Mountain Wines, when Member for Glass House Andrew Powell hosted the first Glassy – Business Awards. It may not have been the Logies, but the event definitely had a real buzz of anticipation. While not everyone can be a winner, everyone in attendance seemed pleased to have been nominated and many had quite loud cheer squads on hand as well. Following on from the success of the event, there has been plenty of interest in the awards becoming an annual event, so keep an eye out for details next year and you can nominate and vote for your favourite local business people.

You Said It Come on Woolies!
Where has your customer service gone? A customer who is a pensioner with severe back problems did his fortnightly shopping on pension day and went around to the ciggy counter, only to be told the till was not working. He had to push the trolley and goods back through and line up again to be served. When he asked why the staff member could not take a few steps to the other till, he was promptly told by the Customer Service officer, “no way. You have to go back through.” At this point the customer, told them that on pension day it is bad policy to have only two checkouts and the fast lanes open, and that he wouldn’t be returning. Rae Beaumont Beerwah
Current government responsible
I am a little perplexed at the comments made about our local member in last week’s GC&M News. All he seems to have done is successfully campaigned for an upgrade to the intersection. The current government have been responsible for the contract and implementation, so if any finger pointing is to be done maybe it should be at them? Derek Browning Glass House Mountains
Dumping ground
The council should have a look behind the golf club at Beerwah in the bushland as it is the dumping ground for those who can’t afford to take items to the tip - out of sight out of mind. Surely the council could have a yearly kerbside pick-up as other councils do? Nev Linnane Beerwah
Lights at Glass House
Some people are so quick to criticise and fail to look on the positive side. Andrew Powell member for Glasshouse has fought many years to have traffic lights installed at the very dangerous

intersection at Glass House Mountains. It is not his fault that it may have originally been poorly designed as Andrew is a politician not an engineer. To his credit he has quickly had the problem rectified and work is progressing well now. I am sure the people of Glass House and those who travel Steve Irwin Way will forever be grateful to Andrew for his initiative in having these lights installed and hopefully this will save many lives in the coming years as our roads continue to become more congested. I am one happy Glass House resident. Name supplied Glass House Mountains
Reed Street intersection
As a resident and business owner who pays many thousands dollars in registrations fees etc I don’t want to see any monies wasted. However I can’t in good conscience not reply to the letters in the last addition of the GC&M News, regarding the intersection. As someone who has had some involvement in the lead up to the work commencing, I was invited by Andrew Powell to attend a meeting with him, the Minister for Main Roads, Transport and Main Road (TMR) and others to view the plans for the intersection. This meeting took place at the intersection in 2015. The TMR representatives were asked many questions including assurances that the intersection would be user friendly for B Doubles and Semitrailers as it is a haulage route. The drawings presented at that time and the assurances from TMR gave all present no cause for concerns. As soon as I noticed the curbing didn’t appear to be in the location as I recalled on the TMR plan I contacted Andrew Powell’s office as apparently other interested parties did. He put the wheels in monition with TMR to review the usability for trucks and he kept us all informed of the progress to resolve any problems. Finally, I would like to remind people that without the wonderfully positive men and women of our area who supported the flyer campaign, and the dogged determination of Andrew Powell
to secure the funds for the project, who knows when we might have got the traffic lights. Kel McNamara Glass House Mountains
Good - but
It was good to see the road works done on Storrs Road Peachester. But how can the council allow an inferior surface to be put down? In less than a week we had pot holes. Not just a little one but a very big one. The surface is lose gravel, that flicks up onto your car and everyone else's. Then we have the lights on Steve Irwin Way at Glass House being done by State Government and how long does it take to do a little road works? Then they can't do it properly and have to rip it up again. Another thing I can’t understand is how much it costs to dump rubbish in the Sunshine Coast Council area. I come from Morten Bay region and it costs nothing to go to the tip. When I question this at the tip they say we paid for it in our rates. Yet the rates are still lower than here. When will the council get it right? Do they like throwing our money away? Name supplied Peachester

In the Garden Get Up & Grow with Jade King
Fantastic Fruits!
Blemished fruit with a few spots or war scars … perfect! Home grown organic fruit and vegetables may not always be perfect to the eye, but they are definitely divine when it comes to taste. Fruit trees generally require a longer maintenance period prior to produce and it is very difficult to achieve a year round supply of fruit in the average backyard. This seems to deter many people from venturing into growing their own fruit. However, the rewards are invaluable. In our garden and on our farm, we have a number of different fruit trees including mulberries, lemon, orange, mandarin, mango, apple, macadamia, fingerlimes, pecan, figs, nectarine, starfruit, avocado, passionfruit and bananas. So many fruit trees, also means a variety of nutrition strategies, and methods of dealing with pests and diseases, of which I have pretty much every one to contend with! So, how to maintain your fruit? Whole books are devoted to this subject and information varies. However I have ever so briefly summarised below some of what I grow and maintain. Fruit Citrus
Mulberry
Blueberry
Mango
Feeding Fertilise three times a year with a manure high in nitrogen and phosphorus, and to a lesser extent potassium, eg, chook manure or dynamic lifter. Feed twice a year with manure or dynamic lifter when young but little need when established. Regular applications of manure, dynamic lifter or compost. When the manure has broken right down, add more and mulch! Feed twice a year with manure and dynamic lifter.
Apple
Feed twice a year with manure or dynamic lifter. Nuts Pecans require frequent nitrogen applications. Feed Macadamia four times a year with a complete low phosphorus fertiliser. Passionfruit Heavy nitrogen feeders, so regular blood and bone and fish emulsion applications.
Bananas
Frequent nitrogen and potassium rich fertiliser such as a combination of chook manure and potash.
Maintenance and nutrition Prefer good drainage and regular watering. Shallow roots require thick mulching and limited competition. Loves water. Keep pruned if wanting to access the fruit.
Loves acid soil, so don’t lime!
Pest and Disease White oil aphids on new growth and any scale. Prevent ant access that harbour scale by using sticky trap taps around the stem.

Well drained light soil is best.
Prune to promote spurs where fruit occurs. Water well. Maintain air flow through tree by removing branches that are causing crowding.
Lots of sun and a sturdy trellis required. Vines decline after 4-5 years so begin planting a new plant in third year. Consistent watering and removal of dead material.
Apply Eco-fungicide well before you note any disease evident or at very first signs to prevent its occurrence. Coddling moth traps.
Use biological control agent, trichogramma wasp to reduce nutborer.

For many Christian Churches the term ‘life in the Spirit’ is one with which they relate to easily. The term refers to the basic Christian belief that God has shared God’s own Spirit with humanity and it is that Spirit which the baptised Christian lives. Our life’s foundation, companion and direction is the Spirit of God and this spirit is eternal so life in the spirit is life that is forever. Most Christians look to the event described in the Bible as Pentecost for the basis upon which we can make the claim that we indeed do share in the life of the Spirit. Pentecost was an annual celebration based on theharvest festival and its purpose was to give thanks. Other meanings of significance also came to beassociated with Pentecost and it was at one such festival after the death of Jesus that this out pouring of the Spirit of God took place among a group of Jesus’ followers. Loving God, Loving People, Loving Life
Well one may ask, “but what does this life in the Spirit look like?” The Bible also provides several descriptions to help us. The gifts and fruits of God’s Spirit include wisdom, understanding as well as peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self control and joy. Naturally many people can say that they see these qualities lived every day by people who don’t call themselves Christian and they don’t want to be. I think that only goes to show us that the Spirit of God cannot be owned by anyone or any group. God’s Spirit will blow where it will and will burn in the hearts of all sorts of people as they go about bringing peace, love and justice to others.

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
The tooth of the matter A Scotsman goes to the dentist and asks how much for a tooth extraction. “Eighty-five pounds, sir," was the dentist's reply. "Och, have ye nay got anything cheaper," replies the Scot. "But that's the normal charge for an extraction," said the dentist. "Er, what aboot if ye nay use any anaesthetic," asks the Scotsman hopefully. "Well, it's highly unusual sir, could be quite painful, but if that's what you want, I suppose I could do it for 70 pounds." The Scotsman scratches his chin a while. "What aboot if ye used one o' yer dentist trainees and still without anaesthetic?" The dentist replied, "well it's possible but they are only training and I can't guarantee their level of professionalism and it will certainly be a lot more painful. However, in that
case I could bring the price down to 40 pounds." "Och, tha's still a tad too much for me purse. I'll tell yer what, man. How aboot if ye make it a training session and have yer student do the extraction without anaesthetic and the other students standin' aroond watchin' and learnin'," said the Scotsman hopefully. "Errr, well, OK," said the dentist. "It'll be good for the students I suppose. Under those circumstances, I think I could bring the price down to just 10 pounds." "Now yer talkin' laddie. It's a deal," said the Scot. "Can ye confirm an appointment for the wife next Tuesday...?" Submitted by Rick, Glass House Mountains

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Do whatever you can this week and the week thereafter to broaden your horizons by travelling and experiencing the world. Break free of your daily routine and give yourself a change of scenery. Learn something new from each adventure, perhaps you would like to take on a new study course or spiritual journey? SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 There is an intense time coming up for you this week, so you will take things more seriously as you want to experience life on a ‘feeling’ level, not an intellectual understanding. It’s time for your own personal psychological self-enquiry. You attract somebody powerful to question things in your life. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With the Sun sign being in Gemini, your sign is therefore opposite. With the Sun being your source of energy, and opposite your field, this means you will feel more tired. Obviously you will need more sleep or try ‘cat naps’ in the afternoon if possible. Help arrives from legal people and psychologists. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 In the week and the month ahead you will strive to work as effectively as you can because you want top production. Specifically you are going to try and get the most for your dollar, when it comes to putting out your effort. You therefore will set high standards for yourself. Watch your health.
AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 What a playful time this will be for you, now that the Sun sign is in the area of Gemini. This means you want to get out and have a good time. You may feel playful and flirtatious. There will be enjoyment watching sporting events, social excursions and fun times with children which gives pleasure. PISCES February 20 – March 20 You will want to hang out more at home than usual. This is because you feel content in your familiar surroundings. This cocoon feeling at home is your effort to escape the crazy, busy, insanitary of the world around you. This is a time where you will do some psychological self-evaluation on all relationships. ARIES March 21– April 20 A good suggestion is to wear your best outfit as the next four weeks can sweep you off your feet with an interest in better jobs or a jam-packed schedule of short trips to exclusive restaurants! This is also the week to visit your relatives or, if you prefer, spend writing, studying and reading. Take a vacation. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This is a week when you could find that you are really good with your money. Some of you may find that you wish to change your banking affairs. Some of you may make a big purchase during this time and want to show it off to others. If you are happy with your home or office space, finalise repairs or mend items.

Week beginning 25/05/2016 GEMINI May 22– June 21 You are now well into your birthday month, and because the Sun is in Gemini, and your source of energy, this is your chance to recharge your batteries for the rest of the year. In astrology it is called your ‘solar return’ and that means you can have a chart drawn up for the year ahead. You impress others now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This might be one of those rare occasions when you choose to work alone, or behind the scenes. You ignore invitations to busy affairs as you prefer to withdraw from the giddy social whirl! Note too, that your personal year draws to an end and your solar return starts next month, so think long term goals. LEO July 23 – August 22 With the Sun moving through Gemini your Leo popularity rating will increase because the energy relates to friendships, casual relationships and anything to do with clubs, groups, and organisations. It’s a window of time that is ideal to work with and cooperate with other people. Use your organisational skills. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 There is an indication that you will be in high visibility, especially in the eyes of authority figures, like management, teachers and financial advisors. The light that shines on you will be flattering as people will see you in a favourable way. Put your best foot forward and ask for what you want because it will happen!
