NOVEMBER 25 2015

Hi Everyone

I

know that regular readers are aware that I love a bit of glitz and glamour and lots of bling, so I really enjoyed the opportunity to get photos of local Year 12 students arriving at their formals last week. With all of the students (and parents) putting so much effort into the dresses, suits, accessories, and cars, it is always really difficult to choose which photo to go with for the front cover. However I couldn’t go past this one of students from Glasshouse Christian College – oozing style but yet so relaxed. As expected there were also some very stylish entrances made, with two Maleny girls being dropped off in ‘Prime Movers’ which are definitely not that easy to climb down from in an ankle length dress and high heels. However Leonie Nicholas from Maleny managed to pull it off in style by having a dramatic split in her frock and teaming it with a pair of riding boots. I bet she was one of the only girls to not complain that their feet were hurting that night. We have included three pages of photos from pages 28 – 30 and there are others on our Facebook page, if you would like to see more. Regards,

Local News 100 year milestone for Moffats Recently, the Moffat family of Glass House Mountains reached the 100 year milestone of farming in the local area and were featured in a national horticulture magazine – Fruit and Vegetable News – published by the peak farming body, Growcom. The article outlined how the family emigrated from Scotland in 1911, setting up farms growing cotton, corn, sugar cane and small crops, before settling on pineapples. By coincidence, on the same boat from Scotland was the original Fullerton family, who celebrated their 100 years in local pineapple farming last year. In the article, patriarch Rick Moffat described how the farming evolved over the years with changes in technology and markets. The family farming tradition continues with Rick, sons Steven and Brian and grandson Shane Moffat working their farms growing top quality pineapples. Here’s to the next 100 years of Moffats being part of the local agricultural scene. Copies of the magazine can be ordered by contacting Growcom via their website www. growcom.com.au

Show 2016 ambassadors wanted By Sonia Clark

Hinterland Property

The Maleny Agricultural Show held at the end of May each year is a popular annual drawcard for the region.

THINKING OF

SELLING? Contact mike@scremail.com

An important part of the show is the work done by inspiring young people who nominate to take on the roles of fundraising or show ambassador. There are four categories that locals can nominate - Rural Ambassador, Charity Person, Miss Showgirl and Show Princess. This year, Maleny local Stacey Bentley was our Rural Ambassador and Show Charity Person, and she did a wonderful job of representing our local region in both roles. Stacey has just completed a business degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast and also works part-time at the Landsborough Post Office. She urges other locals to consider nominating for these positions which provide great experience and local exposure, as well as being a lot of fun. If you are considering nominating for the Charity Person role it is worth thinking about your fundraising efforts early. Each entrant agrees to raise a minimum of $1,200.00 to qualify for the major prize incentive, which is $2,000.00 of travel vouchers. “While it seems like an enormous task at the beginning, it quickly becomes exciting to plan fundraising events and you find the money accumulates quickly,” said Stacey. The experience involves a lot of local networking and is a great way to build confidence, selfesteem and develop skills in fundraising, public speaking and community involvement. The fundraising allows participants to support local

2015 Rural Ambassador and Show Charity Person Stacey Bentley businesses by raising their sponsorship profile and is a fantastic way to build local connections while giving back to the community. “The Maleny Show Society are really supportive and can give you lots of options and ideas to assist in your efforts,” said Stacey. “It’s just such a great sense of achievement to see what you’ve accomplished and it’s really a wonderful experience.” For 2016, conditions of entry are as follows; Showgirl shall be aged between 18 to 28 years (prior to August 2016), Junior Show Princess shall be aged 15 to 17 years (prior to August 2016), Rural Ambassador is open to male and females between 20 to 30 years of age, married or single as at 1st May 2016 and the Charity Person shall be aged 15 years and over as of 1st May 2016, male or female, married or single. Outstanding employee and inspiring local Earlier this month we ran a story on the Sunshine Coast Business awards. One of the individual winners was Glass House Mountains local Neil Collie who was awarded ‘Outstanding Employee of the year’ for his exceptional customer service and inspiring personal story. Neil was originally nominated for the award by one of his customers at Rebel Sports Maroochydore where he has worked as a retail assistant for the last four years. Around 100 nominations were received and the selection process to reach the five finalists involved a number of stages including a detailed nominee submission, numerous referrals and a panel interview. Having started in the retail industry over 25 years ago, Neil’s dedication to customer service was clearly evident. What provided the extra incentive and resulted in him winning the award was his incredible personal journey that saw him survive two major strokes and then use his journey to inspire others, both personally, and through his workplace.

www.gcnews.com.au

Eight years ago Neil suffered a stroke which limited his mobility and resulted in substantial weight gain. Luckily his wife Sharon recognised the signs and was able to rush him to hospital and alert medical staff to the severity of the situation. Four years ago, Neil again suffered a major stroke that required extensive rehabilitation including learning to speak again and regaining strength to the left hand side of his body that had been affected. The second stroke really prompted Neil to reassess his life and lifestyle choices and he realised that he needed to change his thinking and mindset. He also realised that he passionately wanted to raise awareness of stroke – one of the biggest causes of death in Australia. Neil was inspired to share his journey to better health with others and started to document his journey on Facebook. He also sought to highlight the work of the National Stroke Foundation – especially reminding people of the ‘FAST’ acronym which stands for Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty and Time and is an easy way to remember the common signs of stroke. “The number one thing that motivates me is to let people realise the signs of stoke,” said Neil. “If people can detect the signs early and if even one person can be saved from the effects of stroke then it makes it all worthwhile.” Incredibly Neil lost 30 kilos in around 18 months and in September last year he completed his first 42 kilometre marathon. As well as his own fitness journey, Neil has been thrilled to help inspire others.

By Sonia Clark

Sharon and Neil Collie at the awards Neil credits the changes in his life to the incredible ongoing encouragement of those around him, especially his wife Sharon. “I’ve been just blessed to have amazing and supportive people around me,” he said. This year, Neil and Sharon attempted the Blackall 100 kilometre race. Together they ran 70 km and are determined to try again next year to achieve the full 100km. Neil is currently in training for ‘The Big Red Run in 2017’ which sees competitors run a gruelling 250km desert track over six days. When asked why? He laughed and replied, “why not?!”

Construction has started on the first stage of the Bells Creek Arterial Road which will eventually provide residents and visitors with another vital link from the Bruce Highway across the new ‘Aura’ development to the coastal strip. To be developed in three major stages as the Aura community grows, developer Stockland will invest $115 million in the new road over the next 10 or more years. This first stage will see the construction of a new 2.8 km section of the two-lane road, extending south from the Caloundra Road roundabout near Corbould Park through the Aura Development Area and linking up to Bellvista Boulevard near Bells Reach. It will become the major arterial road running through Aura, ultimately connecting to the recently completed Bells Creek Road Interchange on the Bruce Highway.

It is expected to take 14 months to complete the first section. Speaking at last week’s official ceremony, Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said the new road would provide a quick, safe transport option between Caloundra Road and the Bruce Highway. “This is a rapidly growing region that needs key infrastructure to prosper and work effectively,” Mr Bailey said. “Caloundra South (Aura) will soon be home to Australia’s largest master-planned city and we are ensuring infrastructure capacity will meet demand. “This is a great example of the private sector working together with the state government to deliver positive outcomes for the community. “I’m very pleased that Sunshine Coast-based Shadforths has been contracted to build the road, ensuring more local jobs for Queenslanders.”

Real Estate Tip Cooling-off period for a relevant contract is a period of five business days starting on the first business day a buyer receives a copy of the contract signed by both parties. It ends at 5.00pm on the fifth business day. A buyer may shorten the cooling-off period by giving written notice to the seller.

Arterial Road Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Councillor and Transport Strategy Portfolio holder Rick Baberowski, who attended the official ceremony, said he was pleased the new road would significantly improve access to Bellvista. “In the event that Bellvista Boulevard is blocked for any reason there will now be a second way in and out,” Cr Baberowski said. “Having a single access road to large community was always a major concern so I’m pleased to see this significantly improved.” Echoing these sentiments, State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle welcomes the construction. “I remember some years ago Bellvista was threatened by a very large fire that came close to housing. This road will provide an alternate route to residents but also emergency vehicles when required,” Mr McArdle said. “This is good news for local residents who lobbied for a second formal access and once complete it will be one step closer to easing traffic back-logs particularly during peak school drop-off and pick-up times.” Shadforths Civil Contractors will build the road, providing employment for around 40 local people. Existing vegetation between adjacent properties and the road corridor will be retained, with clearance work restricted to the actual road corridor. An acoustic barrier along a section of the road will also be constructed to attenuate road noise. A pedestrian and cycle path will also be included within the road corridor.

Old Gympie Road gets a makeover As part of their Road Reseal and Rehabilitation Program, Sunshine Coast Council have begun work on 2.35 kms of Old Gympie Road north from the Beerburrum – Woodford Road intersection. The work commenced on Monday, November 23 and is scheduled for round four weeks – depending on the weather. The treatment will strengthen the pavement and provide a new bitumen seal to provide a new surface which, according to Council plans, will last for many further years. According to Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, the road hasn’t been coping with the increasing volumes of traffic. “So I know the community will be pleased to see this rehabilitation work starting,” said Cr Baberowski. “Fixing this 2.35 km section will significantly improve the driving experience particularly for those using it at night.” During the works, there will be some traffic management which will see the section closed to one lane, as well as access to the State Forest being affected, for short durations. If you would like to know more, contact the council’s customer service centre on 5475 7272.

Students from Masterpiece Dance School, dance students from Glasshouse Christian College, students from Beerwah High and Beerwah State School, all spoke with one very loud voice – Go Bindi Go! Bindi’s supporters want to make sure that she knows that her home town and the whole of the Sunshine Coast is fully behind her and they really want her to win. The video was an initiative of our Beerwah’s Councillor Baberowski, who along with acknowledging Bindi's efforts, is also keen to show off Beerwah to the rest of the world. Peachester State School wins $1,000 worth of books Peachester State School was awarded $1,000 worth of books for their school library this week as part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge, a program that aims to improve literacy for students up to Year 9. To enter the QSuper sponsored competition, Queensland students were required to submit an entry expressing their connection to a book read during the challenge.

Peachester State School submitted their entry based on the book ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Hard Luck’ by Jeff Kinney, and was awarded top marks based on their creativity. In its 10th year, more than 150,000 students from across the state took part in the Premier’s Reading Challenge over a five month period with almost two million books experienced or read by children up to Year 9.

mare named Magic. Over the last six years Sarah has ridden Magic progressing from state level to achieving results at a national level. Sarah has been competing in the youth category (ages 18 and under) of PHAA events for many years. The system of scoring sees competitors accumulate points over a two year period by riding at various agricultural shows as well as state and national shows affiliated with PHAA. In a great local achievement, Sarah has now been ranked number one in both Queensland and Australia and has been selected to ride for Australia at the Youth World Games that form part of the Paint Horse World Championships 2016. This international competition will be held in Germany during August/September, 2016. To attend, Sarah needs to raise $5,000 and she is currently planning a number of fundraising ventures, including raffles and some future events at the Maleny Pool where she works.

Maleny local Sarah Peters has been riding horses since she was a toddler and now at only 18 years of age she is set to represent Australia at the ‘Paint Horse World Championship Show’ to be held in Germany next year. Sarah’s mum bought her a Paint Horse (named for their distinctive markings) when she was just eight years old and Sarah has been riding this breed of horse ever since. Each horse has its own unique markings and visually they are a very appealing looking animal. Sarah belongs to the Paint Horse Association of Australia (PHAA), with the closest clubs located at Caboolture and Burpengary. While there is a great social aspect to the Association with many of Sarah’s closest friends and peers also enjoying the sport - to reach championship level takes years of dedication and commitment and Sarah trains her horse daily. A few years ago, Sarah became serious about competing and through the generosity of a Caboolture lady Rosie, was given the use of a

Business Local News News Maleny Commerce Update With Spencer Shaw

Our last networking breakfast for the year was well attended at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, one of the iconic natural beauty spots of the Sunshine Coast. We decided to wrap it up with a chat from some of our local business legends and this year we had Sara Bucher from Maleny Cheese, Bob Malcolm from the Maleny and District Credit Union, Chris Bond from Pomodoras on Obi and yours truly from Brush Turkey Enterprises. Our venue was the award winning Mary Cairncross Cafe and backdrop the magnificent ambience of the rainforest and Glass House Mountains. There is plenty to celebrate when it comes to doing business in Maleny and this is a theme that resonated with our presenters as we live in a community full of innovation and

creativity in business, as well as culture. Talking about celebrating, coming up soon is the Maleny Christmas Street Carnival on Friday, December 11. Maleny Commerce is again co-ordinating this great community event with co-ordinator Karen Shaw and her busy team of elves organising yet another great festival full of music, food, fun and games. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate our town and community and as we proved last year, regardless of the weather, Maleny likes a party. This year all funds raised from the official Christmas Carnival Raffle will be going to our own Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to assist youth with depression in our community. It’s Christmas crunch time when it comes to

Ann Brown from Rosetta Books with Lyn Burgess from Maleny Show Society at the recent networking breakfast parking on Maple Street Maleny and to help keep parking spaces available for everyone; we are encouraging people that parking regulations are observed and no parking on Maple Street for the whole day. If an average park time for a customer is 15 minutes and a parking spot is taken for an eight hour day, that’s 32 potential customers who haven’t been able to shop at businesses on Maple and our shops are literally at the centre of our town.

Bargain Max comes to Maleny

Building on the success of the Beerwah Bargain Max store, the family run business has recently opened up a second store at Maleny. Located on the site of where Bi-Rite used to be, the new Bargain Max is at the top end of Maple Street. Owner of Bargain Max, Mitesh Gohil, is thrilled to have opened up the new store and is keen to offer the locals of Maleny the great range and service that have proved so popular at the Beerwah store. “I’ve always liked Maleny. It’s got a great community feel and it’s a beautiful town. The people have been fantastic and very welcoming,” said Mitesh. The landlords have been incredibly supportive and the new store is a massive 400m². Mitesh hopes that locals will be able to find what they are looking for in the diverse range of competitively priced items. Stock ranges including party items, pet accessories, and a large range of art and craft products are selling well in the new store. Plastic bulk storage and a revitalised kitchen range are also popular. “As we get to know more about what the community wants here, we are happy to try to accommodate stock lines accordingly. We look forward to being a part of the Maleny community,” he said. Bargain Max, 72 Maple Street Maleny.

Introducing Anna

Anna, the Maori Reiki Healer at Landsborough Health & Wellness Centre, continues the healing traditions from her Maori heritage, the ancient Tupuna matua. Traditionally Maori healing involved strengthening the connection between family and the land. Due to the demands of this modern lifestyle, people are often left feeling disconnected as they are not able to connect with family and land for this traditional type of healing. Therefore leaving them in search of healers to help them to rebalance and reconnect as an individual. During a Maori Reiki Healing session with Anna, family members in spirit will join into the process with the practitioner and give guidance to their loved one which creates that ‘whole’ feeling of a whênau ora approach to hauora (health and wellbeing). The recreation of the feeling of belonging to family, even if it is to loved ones who have passed over, and land connection is made to enable Healing to take place. Healing the mind, body and spirit through the use of traditional practices or spiritual healing is beneficial for all people from all walks of life for we are all from family and from this earth.

By Sonia Clark The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) is thrilled to introduce Nooreen Harris as the newly appointed Centre Manager and local Development Worker. Nooreen comes to MNC after spending the previous six years working as a Community Development Worker at the Caboolture Neighbourhood Centre. During this time one of her key roles was as program manager for the successful community initiative ‘CAMS’ – Community Action for a Multicultural Society. In this role, Nooreen said she supported people from a culturally diverse background, helped local communities to build their capacities, and supported community advocacy work and network forums. “I am really thrilled to be here in Maleny and love the fact that the Centre is so innovative,” she said. “The community is incredibly supportive up here with everyone caring and helping each other. Everyone has been wonderfully welcoming.” Nooreen brings a long held passion for social justice to her new role at MNC, and is looking forward to immersing herself in the Maleny community. Part of her new role will involve working closely with, and gaining understanding of the needs of the local community, as well as the way that the MNC can best address community needs.

Congratulations!

Year 12 class of 2015

“My vision is to take the Centre to the next phase of development. I have always heard so much positive feedback about the innovative approach to community development that the Centre provides, so I am here to enhance what I can but mainly continue the ethos of this excellent service,” she said. Take a Break Playgroup Glasshouse Country Uniting Church This past year has just flown, so this message is that our Playgroup is taking a break for Christmas. This year our break-up is on November 25 and we are starting again the second week of school. What a wonderful and Blessed year we have had, a number of new mums and children have joined our happy crew. Despite the fact that we had one or two health issues with our wonderful helpers this year, and some brilliant holidays - we have always been able to call on our extras to come and star for those missing helpers. We had so many happy times this year, and such fun with all our beautiful children. So now I will finish up with the message that we look forward so much next year to seeing all our gorgeous children and their marvellous mums. God Bless you all. Here are our wishes for a beautiful, Holy Christmas for 2015 and a special 2016 with love and peace for all. From: Crafty Elaine, Puzzle King Keith, Lovely Puzzler Doris, Playdough Ethel, Sweet Nurse Margie, King Papa Kevin and Chatterbox Diane. Five safe jumping tips to reduce trampoline injuries If you’ve ever been stalked, swooped or struck by a magpie, you’ll always remember the sound, the fear, the sting and how to avoid it from ever happening again! Hats, glasses, zip ties on your bike helmet, backpack on your head… whatever it takes. Similarly, to avoid sunburn – we wear sunscreen, to avoid stinging eyes after swimming – we wear goggles, to avoid abrasions when rollerblading – we wear elbow and knee pads. Any outdoor activity has its risks, and jumping on a trampoline is no different. Unfortunately, we’re hearing more and more about trampoline injuries, and a recent news report* tells us there has been a significant rise in serious trampoline injuries, prompting new research to address injury prevention. Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital trauma director, Dr Warwick Teague believes the majority of injuries occur where there are more than one child jumping on the trampoline. “If you have multiple users on the trampoline, I would liken it to cage fighting,” he said. Dr Teague also mentioned the need to address the rise in trampoline parks in the research. “The project would examine cases from home trampolines as well as trampoline play centres to see if they are contributing to the increase in severe trampoline injuries,” he said. Safe backyard play is a priority for Springfree Trampoline, and our revolutionary design has changed the way trampolines work by eliminating the impact areas that cause 90% of all productrelated injuries. How?

• No springs to pinch and trap little hands and feet • Hidden frame that sits well below the jumping surface – making it impossible to hit • SoftEdge™ mat that’s 30 times more shockabsorbent than pads • FlexiNet™ enclosure and net rods that cushion jumpers and prevent falls Springfree Trampolines minimise the risk of trampoline injuries, which means peace of mind for parents and more fun for kids by simply following these 5 Safe Jumping Rules: 1. No flips or double bounces: Untrained jumpers can land on their head and neck, causing serious injury.

2. One at a time: Having a single jumper eliminates the chance of collisions and injuries. 3. Supervise: A responsible adult should keep an eye on the jumper. 4. Safe clearance: Keep enough space around the trampoline (we recommend 1.5 metres) to allow room for the net to flex out. 5. Keep it locked: Zipping the net when the trampoline is not being used will keep unwanted jumpers away. Safe jumping! *http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-09-11/ rise-in-trampoline-injuries-worries-traumaspecialists/6766536

Kids in hospital toy run

Dog Show results

Glasshouse Mountains 4x4 Recovery Club are proudly organising ‘Rose’s 4x4 Toy Run 2015’, which will take place on December 20 starting at Beerwah Football Oval and travelling down to Caboolture and then onto Brisbane. The idea is for locals to donate new toys that can be taken down by 4x4 trucks to Caboolture Hospital and Lady Cilento Children’s hospital as part of a day long event. The event is scheduled to leave Beerwah Football Oval at 11.00am and a barbecue breakfast has been kindly donated by a local sponsor, Beerwah Kabab Haven, before the run. The convoy will leave Beerwah and then travel down to Caboolture Showgrounds to meet up with other trucks participating in the run at 12.00noon before heading to Caboolture Hospital to deliver presents. The plan is then to travel on to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital where the club are hoping to present a display of the vehicles for the kids at the hospital, and there will be a 4WD display at the Queensland Maritime Museum. Please consider donating toys to help brighten up these childrens’ Christmas. New toys for all age groups are gratefully accepted and please ensure they are safe and suitable for children (some of whom are unfortunately very unwell) and unwrapped. Donations can be made at Rainbow Stars Christmas Festival on December 5, from 12.00noon – 7.00pm at the Ningi Community Hall (1320 Bribie Island Road, Ningi) or at 8 Mellumview Drive, Beerwah contact 0459 597 617. Or at California Dry Cleaners, 260 Robinson Road, East Geebung, phone 0432 228 066. Contributed by Helen Weil The dog shows held by the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club last weekend were extremely successful despite having storms on Saturday evening. As always we worked around the difficult conditions and completed the show in good time. It was great to see many visitors come along to see the many breeds of dogs exhibited and enjoying our friendly atmosphere. The club’s Patron, vet Mr Tom Duggan, came along on Sunday to show his continuing interest and generous support. Royal Canin was again a sponsor for the show, supplying many bags of top quality dog food for the winners. Best in Show on Saturday was a Pomeranian ‘Supreme Champion Pomquest Fame N Fortune’ owned by Brett and Sandy Abraham from Glass House Mountains. The photo is of the Best in Show winner on Sunday. This is a Kerry Blue Terrier and his name is quite a mouthful ‘UK/IR/USA/Aust Champion Kebulak Dirty Harry (Imp USA)’. He is also almost local with his owner living at Pomona. Both days ran very smoothly with exhibitors travelling from all over SE Queensland to compete, many camping in the damp conditions but happy to do so for a good show. We had very good numbers for the Junior Handlers which are classes for the children to show their skills at handling dogs and to compete for a trip to Crufts should they win the National Junior Handler competition. All up it was a very good weekend.

Peachester Playgroup has Pulsed Electromagnetic a new look Field Treatment Over the last four months Peachester Playgroup has welcomed four ‘very’ new members. Coincidentally Rory, Charlotte, Claire and Max arrived at the same time as our very new and also adorable shed renovations. This year Peachester Playgroup received a gambling grant to renovate the playgroup and our little shed subsequently has had a full internal facelift. It is now fully lined and insulated, with new cabinetry and flooring. To celebrate our beautiful ‘new look’ community Playgroup we are holding an open day on Tuesday, December 1 from 9.30am – 11.00am. There will be nibbles and tea / coffee provided, everyone is welcome to come and have a look and a chat. About 12 regular families including grandparents currently meet every Tuesday in our little shed behind the Uniting Church in Peachester, along Peachester Woodford / Kilcoy Road. Park near the church and the Peachester Hall. For more information please contact Rebecca on 0422 390 508.

Come and learn how Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Treatment (PEMF) can help you be the healthiest you can be. Pulsed electromagnetic field treatment affects the nervous and circulatory systems, as well as every living cell, whether animal, human or plant. Using magnets for medical purposes dates back to ancient times, nowadays many European clinics and hospitals give thousands of electromagnetic field treatments daily but unfortunately, PEMF is virtually unknown in Australia, even though there are more than 4,000 scientific essays, including many doubleblind studies, explaining the positive effects on humans, plants and animals. It is used as a preventative method to help you to stay healthy, as well as an aid to wellness and recovery. Call Helen now 0433 958 718 or Veronica 5494 2838 to reserve your seat for this informal talk and demonstration. To be held at magical Maleny Sunday, November 29 from 10.00am until 12.00noon with plenty of time for questions.

Getting older? Positively plan for your future

A free information session designed to help people make good decisions about aging will be held at Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre from 1.00pm until 2.30pm on Wednesday, December 9. The afternoon will be a relaxed opportunity to spend in the company of key community advisers to support people to live independently at home. Presentations will cover topics such as getting older and needing additional support to live at home, finding good information, legal terms, in home support, the role of Power of Attorney and how to appoint one, who can look after your pets, end of life wishes and much more. The session is sponsored by Care Connect, Suncoast Community Legal Service, Hinterland Community Development and the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. Free afternoon tea will be provided. For catering purposes, please contact the Neighbourhood Centre to register for the event by Friday, December 4 on 5438 7000.

Beerwah Lions November Round Up Contributed by Bob Banner President Patricia Jutila chaired a well attended November dinner meeting of the Beerwah Lions Club. Guest speaker for the evening was Simon Farrell who spoke on the role of the Concierge Club Team. Designed to help businesses find temporary staff when a need arises, the Concierge team has a turn-around time of 24 hours, including answering the phone, book keeping or Internet Research.

During the evening Lion Justin Neubecker inducted a new member, John Hunt, into the Beerwah Club and Lions International. John, who has a special interest in computer work, was also warmly welcomed by other members.

NOVEMBER 25 2015

The Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group continues to deliver an important message on Men's Health. Cancer is one word with many types. In October, James Hill an advocate for beyondblue gave a inspiring address, sharing his journey with depression. This is a major side effect when dealing with any cancer. When I was given the news I had prostate cancer and would require surgery, we confronted the unknown. The next part of our journey was to have a chat with Dr James MacKean who works at Genesis CancerCare's Chermside, Wesley and Nambour centres. Dr MacKean started at the Wesley in 2000, after completing registrar training in New South Wales and a Fellowship year at Mt Vernon Hospital, London. He has a particular interest in all aspects of the management of Prostate cancer and is actively involved in both HDR and LDR Prostate brachytherapy programs at The Wesley Hospital. His other interests are palliative care, colo-rectal and haematological malignancies. He is a member of the Faculty of

Radiation Oncology Genito-Urinary Group and a former chair of the Australasian Brachytherapy Group. The unique Rapid Access Palliative Care (RAPC) radiation treatment offers several important benefits for cancer patients. School News School thanks IGA and the P&C

Students, staff and the school community would like to thank White’s IGA for supporting our school continuously. This time they have made a huge contribution to our school by funding us, along with the Mooloolah State School P&C, for our new electronic sign. The new sign is a standout and gives the parents, students and the broader community important information in regards to the school. It allows people to have a visual and constant reminder for events and information. It also reminds motorists of the 40km/h school zone. The sign allows people in the community to keep up-to-date with the goings on of the school if they do not access social media. Without the support and massive contribution from White’s IGA and the school P&C this sign would still be a long way off. So the school community would like to thank you from the bottom of their hearts. We have already received positive feedback from school families and the locals. What a lucky school we are to have such a supportive community. Thanks P&C and thanks White’s IGA!

Volunteers recognised

Contributed by Bronwyn Reid Library Technician At Beerwah State Primary School last Tuesday, November 17, we celebrated the dedicated efforts of our Support aReader volunteers with a morning tea at the school library. Our volunteers support the students in gaining confidence and assisting them with strategies for reading. The school offers courses throughout

the year for parents and the wider community to attend and learn the basics of mentoring beginning reading students. Many of the volunteers have been participating in the Support a Reader program for over five years. A comment we hear from time to time from the volunteers is, “I’m the one that gets the enjoyment out of watching them become confident readers!” Thank you for your dedicated service.

Peachester Celebrates Reading Challenge

Contributed by Andrea Balcombe P&C Peachester State School recently celebrated the students who were successful in completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2015 and winning the school library $1000.00 worth of books. The Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell presented each ‘hard-reading’ student with a certificate of achievement. He also gave special acknowledgement to Prep student, Alexandra Haslam and Year 5 student Ryan Evans whose entries were chosen to represent the school in Q Super’s Premier’s Reading Challenge competition. Their entries were awarded top marks for creativity and were based on the book ‘Very Cranky Bear’ by Nick Bland (Prep) and ‘Diary of a Whimpy Kid – Hard Luck’ by Jeff Kinney (Year 5), they were also presented certificates by Q Super Senior Manager, Mr Rob Ruggieri,

Te g h a n ’s

Customer Marketing. Celebrations continued in the afternoon with lots of ‘wet’ fun, playing with water bombs, wet T-shirt relays, sand modelling, touch football and more.

Hinterland Bush Links was delighted with community participation in the inaugural Subtropical Forests Ecology Course at Booroobin. This recent three-day course was attended by 26 landholders, teachers, students and others with a keen interest in the life within our beautiful rainforests and eucalypt forests. Participants got down and dirty in getting to know the soils and the plants they support. We looked at the importance of tree-hollows, fruit and seed to our native wildlife, and the threats posed by weeds and habitat loss. It was also an opportunity to compare indigenous and non-indigenous land management. To top it off, we learnt a lot about hydrology and erosion after three days of thunderstorms! The knowledge gained in the course was used to develop conservation plans around a local property where eco-tourism and primary production are key land-uses. Those on the course will take this experience back to their own land with a greater understanding of how best to care for and connect to the bush and the wildlife that lives there. Hinterland Bush Links will run the course again in spring 2016 so if you are interested, contact Susie Duncan 5429 6622 for further information.

Celebrating International Men's Day With

Jeff Willis

All Energy HQ

Bank of Queensland

All Energy HQ began trading back in 1989, well before solar was fashionable and well before the ‘solar bonus’ was introduced. Business owner Ian Hall began installing stand alone systems over 25 years ago–originally in the Wide Bay, Mary Valley and Bundaberg area. Back in 1989, the family owned and operated business was known as ‘Home Power from Solar’. Ian was a pioneer in this fledgling industry, installing over 200 systems in what was essentially a cottage industry. Home Power from Solar even installed the very first grid system in the Wide Bay area – something that even the local power company had not seen before. Ian has been in the industry for over 26 years now and has seen numerous changes over the decades. The business has grown from a small home based operation re-directing into a successful retail and solar grid installation company. Ian is a passionate industry advocate with years of experience and is proud to make available the latest products to customers. ALL ENERGY HQ is now leading the Australian market in energy storage. The longevity of the business in off and on grid technology ensures that customers get the best products available. Store and save your power with a battery storage system and collect free power for night time use. For more details contact Ian on 5438 7200.

If you don’t know your bank manager’s name or number, then you might want to read on. For the past 12 years, Jeff Willis, owner manager of the Beerwah branch of Bank of Queensland has been building solid relationships with all his clients, and as an active member of the local community, he puts his money where his mouth is. “Friendly customer service and the ability to make decisions locally is of great assistance when dealing with all matters, from issuing credit cards, approving home loans, right through to commercial finance for business projects,” Jeff said. Jeff has been in the banking and finance industry for over 30 years, and along with wife Debbie, set up the Beerwah franchise 12 years ago. His extensive experience with both retail and commercial lending focus is just one of many benefits of using the financial services on offer from the local branch of the Bank of Queensland. “We aim to provide the best possible service on a face to face basis, and because we live locally and own the Beerwah franchise, we’re not restricted in our dealings, which enables us to build stronger relationships with our clients. “It is certainly something we pride ourselves on,” said Jeff. Contact Jeff at the Beerwah Bank of Queensland on 5439 0622. The branch is located at shop 16, Beerwah Market Place, Peachester Road.

Adjust to Life Chiropractic

First National Real Estate Beerwah

When you think of chiropractic, what’s the first thing that pops into your mind? For most people, it’s either “pain relief” or “getting cracked.” For Dr Braxton, that is exactly what chiropractic was throughout university, chiropractic school, and even the first year of practice. But after observing patients report other health changes in addition to pain relief, and questioning his chiropractic mentors, he discovered the original purpose of chiropractic was never meant to be pain relief. The purpose of chiropractic was to restore normal function to the body. Pain relief and all of the other benefits were simply side effects. Chiropractic is based on the idea that we are designed to be 100% healthy. We’re meant to feel great, to have regular digestion, to have great sleep, abundant energy, a clear, focused mind, and to have a strong immune system. But when our spine and nervous system is pushed out of alignment from today’s lifestyles, we lose that ability to function normally, and many symptoms and discomforts begin to set in. For the past six and a half years, Dr Braxton’s job has been much more than cracking backs for pain relief. His purpose is to restore and maintain the great health you were created to experience, so you may enjoy the highest possible quality of life.

Function Better, Feel Better, Live Your Best Life!

Many of you may have met Aaron, Principal of First National Beerwah, as he and his team have been selling and leasing properties in Beerwah and surrounds for many years. Aaron joined First National Beerwah after falling in love with the area in 2007, and he’s never looked back... After working in the Sunshine Coast industry since the age of 19, initially starting at Kawana where he was selling beachfront property along Oceanic Drive for $200,000 (yes, those investors had excellent foresight); and he has experienced the highs and lows of the property market throughout this time. “I have seen a lot of changes along the coastal strip and hinterland from the booming market post-millennium, peaking at around 2007, before being hit by a more challenging market during and post-GFC,” said Aaron. “We are in a very positive buoyant cycle right now, driven by many factors such as low interest rates, the significant infrastructure projects taking place particularly at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, and importantly, housing affordability issues are making communities like Beerwah a really attractive option for buyers. An increasing number of investors and entry level buyers are investing in these wonderful hinterland townships because they offer exceptional value for money, have easy access via rail to Brisbane, are framed by lush natural beauty and have a great community spirit.” Contact Aaron today to discuss all your property needs.

You Said It NBN some sanity please

In last week’s issue I saw the heading ‘Structure to tower over mountains’ in this paper (apart from being inaccurate it’s downright inflammatory). The proposed tower ‘60 metres tall’ may be higher than the local tree growth but it is on par with the Main Electricity Grid Pylons (45-55 meters) right next door to the proposed site. We seem to be able to live with the thousands if not millions of these power Pylons/towers spread all over Australia. So please let’s be reasonable. If it is impractical or impossible for us to have fibre optic cabling, or it’s financially not viable and our only option is WiFi, then I say bring it on and do it quickly. We owe that to our kids and ourselves. Don’t we want better mobile phone reception with a 21st centenary internet connection? I know I do and I am 65 years old, I don’t see we have a choice. Particularly in Glass House Mountains. You would not stop an electricity grid being built because the pylons don’t look nice? This is one tower as opposed to being able to see a dozen or so pylons at the same site. The increased growth in the area (there are 86 new homes off Poole Road alone) will put a drain on existing copper lines. The way the system works is that the signal strength and speed reduces the more people tap in, and the further you are away from the exchange, the worse it gets. This is why fibre optic is so good, there is no resistance to the signal, as there is in copper wire. With the mountains being so awesome to look at, visitors will not even notice the tower but they will be grateful to find some where to stay, some where to eat locally, and to find out more about the area easily and quickly on their smart phones. Bob Waldock Glass House Mountains

Our Scenic amenity and health of residents are paramount Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) has been very detailed in its requirements under the Telecommunications Facility Code (TFC) within the 2014 Planning Scheme for where new

microwave towers should NOT be placed. This is to protect the scenic amenity of our region and to protect the health and wellbeing of our residents. NBN continues to adopt an arrogant approach and ignore these basic community rights and expectations as they lodge additional development applications for more microwave towers. In a Press Release on September 25, 2014 Hon Mal Brough MP, our local Federal Member stated: ‘I have been assured by NBN Co that any proposed sites identified will be presented to the community for consultation prior to Development Applications being lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council.’ NBN has not followed this consultation process for the Hunchy site, the Beerwah site, the Glass House Mountains site nor the Eudlo site. During their assessment, SCC followed their code (TFC) and rejected the Hunchy proposal. NBN has not learnt from this. The Code states that: • Residents should be 400 metres from the tower • Schools should be 500 metres away • The tower should not be obtrusive along defined Scenic Routes and around scenic locations. The 41 metre high mono-poled facility proposed for Eudlo (419 Mooloolah Road) is about 70 metres to the closest house and 260 metres from the school. It is visible from local scenic routes. In the middle of the prestigious Glass House Mountains (2001 Old Gympie Road) is the proposal for a massive 56 metre high lattice towered facility right next to a camping ground and about 260 metres from the closest resident. It would be obtrusive on the scenic routes and despoil the scenic views of some of the Glass House Mountains. When will NBN understand the local expectations and Codes and then provide a fibre to the node (FTTN) service to the hinterland areas of the SCC instead of their microwave tower proposals? Jim Straker Maleny

Tired of the madness

I am tired of the continued madness of NBN Co/Aurecon’s intent to populate the Southern Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast with this second rate rollout of claimed high speed communications. I agree with CR Rick Barberowski,"Glass House Mountains and surrounding towns are not that remote and deserve better." I believe it would be in the best interest of NBN Co/Aurecon to show the community of Glass House Mountains the respect and hold an open meeting. Mal Brough posted a letter last year stating ‘I have been assured by NBN Co that any proposed sites identified will be presented to the community for consultation prior to Development Applications being lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council.’ This is not the case at present. For those that live in Beerwah / Peachester / Cedarton areas, Aurecon are still looking for new sites to build their network. As indicated by the current proposed site at Glass House, and previously Ratcliffe Road in Hunchy – they will be building next to an Energex high voltage tower or similar structure. Our innovations continue to get noticedIan and Zizi Nominated in not one but three categories for the 2015 Sunshine Coast Business Awards and here is why: 1. Excellence in Living Smart Service and Product We were nominated as having successful services and products around sustainable solutions which goes towards a sustainable lifestyle. It was great that after 31 years our innovations continue to get noticed. The products involved with the nomination were for our Cool Home Loan and Advantage Plus Home Loan, Solar Loan, Green Star Car Loan and Green Appliance Loan. All but one of our lending products recognised in this category! 2. Education and Training We were nominated by Maleny Chamber of Commerce for our Financial Literacy Workbook being taught to Year 10 Students at Maleny State High School. As a result of the publicity about the

workbook we have been approached by Beerwah State High School who is interested in implementing the workbook into their 2016 curriculum for Year 10 and 11 students. 3. Excellence in Social Responsibility Social responsibility for the Credit Union is about developing strategies that have positive outcomes in the community in which we live and operate. It’s that time of the year again....Christmas the festive season. Unfortunately for many cats and dogs it is a time when they find themselves abandoned or surrendered to local pounds and rescues. It is so important that, if you are going away for the holidays you do organise what will happen with your pets. Ideally you go on pet friendly holidays but sometimes this is not possible. Book into kennels and catteries as early as you can. Leaving this to the last minute will guarantee you won’t get a spot. Some owners even book their pets in a year in advance. Consider whether or not a neighbour or friend can look after your pets. Perhaps a friend wants to have a holiday in your house and mind your pets at the same time? A win-win situation. There are also a number of very good pet sitting services on the coast. If you do however find yourself in the awful situation of having to surrender your pet to a local rescue…again do give as much notice as possible as they are often also full at this time of the year. This will not be an automatic and easy solution for you. The take home message at this time of the year is – be prepared and plan ahead. Remember a pet is for life not a throw away commodity like a toaster. Pets are family. SCARS / 4 Paws Walk for Awareness The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge and 4 Paws combined to hold a Walk 4 Awareness in October. The day was a roaring success with well over 180 dogs walking the walk and over 400 people along to enjoy the day. A big thanks to our major sponsor Petstock Kawana and Maroochydore and the SC Council who helped make the event a success. Hope to see everyone there next year.

‘A Little Piece of the Sun’ will feature 13 of our many excellent Hinterland artists exhibiting small (or not so small!) works glowing with warmth and light, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Unlike all of our other exhibitions, ‘A Little Piece of the Sun’ will be an ‘off the wall’ show - meaning that if a work sells it can be taken of the wall right then and it will be replaced with another work by that artist - by the time the exhibition closes we expect it to be completely different to the opening night show! ‘A Little Piece of the Sun’ will hang at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street Beerwah, from November 29 to January, 31 and will open at 6.00pm on December 4. Light refreshments will be served at the opening, and an a la carte menu will be available from 7.00pm, after the opening – call Steve on 0412 312 399 for table bookings. Looking for a great low maintenance gap-filler or driveway border? Look no further than Agapanthus (or ‘Aggie’s Pants’ as they are affectionately called). They’re in flower at the moment and are making a wonderful display in gardens from Maleny to Elimbah and beyond. Within the two basic flower colours – white and blue – there are a whole range of shades and hues. There are also a range of plant and flower sizes from the robust 2m tall 'Dutch Blue' to the dainty 'Snowball' with leaves to only 30cm. They need full sun to flower well and they don’t like having soggy feet. So, if you’ve got clay soils, raise them up a bit. Mulch well around them to protect their roots from baking in the sun. Cutting off the flowers when they’ve finished will not only tidy them up, but will allow the plant to put its energy into growing rather than making seed pods. All the local nurseries will have a selection of Aggie’s Pants for you to choose from.

Gardening Gifts

It is amazing to think that Christmas is just around the corner! Every year I love to share my passion for productive gardening by giving a gift from the garden. It also saves me having to go shopping at this crazy time! There are so many gifts you can make that originate from your garden that could help save money, whilst also having more sentimental value when the receiver knows how much effort and time you have poured into their gift. Here are some ideas for you to get stuck into.

Preserves and conserves

There is nothing quite like a selection of home-made jams, pickles and chutneys in a nice basket as a gift. With beetroot, tomatoes, beans, onion, corn, cucumber and strawberries being harvested in mass quantities, it is great to make bottles of pickled beetroot, green tomato pickles, bread and butter cucumber, sweet tomato chutney, corn relish and strawberry jam!

Herb baskets

Collect a few herbs that can be divided easily, like chives and most mints and pot them up in a nice container or Hessian lined basket. Add a little personalised label and some ribbons and you have a gorgeous gift to give.

Creative containers

I’ve been amazed recently by the creativity of some people in the garden when it comes to garden feature containers. These have included cups and saucers, old toy trucks and boots and the more practical PVC pipe stands. Recycling any of these things and turning them into a mini garden gift with seedlings would brighten anyone’s day!

Pressed flower cards

Collect some flowers from around the garden and press them flat in an old phone book. To quicken up the drying process, put the book of flattened flowers in your car for a week and it works like an oven. This is a trick I’ve previously discovered by accident! Once the flowers are dry, stick them to your card and laminate it. These are absolutely beautiful and make great gift tags or book marks too.

Garden DIY kit

This is a great idea for both young and old. Grab a pot and get a sealable bag with the pot required amount of potting mix in it. Choose some flower or vegetable seeds and place these and the bag of potting mix into the pot and wrap it up.

Fresh vegetable basket

It is the season of abundance in the veggie patch and quite often you have a few hundred more cucumbers, zucchini, squash, choko etc than you can handle. Normally you would just pass them on, but with it being the end of year and a thousand ‘thank you’s’ to be said, why not make a gift basket of your harvest and attach a thank you card? Easy, cheap and effective! These are just a few ideas for gifts from your garden. However, if time becomes an issue as it so often does, and you are keen to avoid the rush of people, don’t go past the Coochin Creek Co-op in Beerwah behind the Shell Service Station. It has all the wonderful things a gardener could desire, from seeds to all essential gardening implements. Until next time in Get Up and Grow…

Jade likes her family to be able to live as self sufficiently as possible from her garden and she loves to share her knowledge with others.

Thinking about renovating in 2016? With the summer season here, why not consider making your home as comfortable and enjoyable as possible? We are blessed to live in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia so why not make the most of what is for many people their biggest asset - and look at renovation or addition work to really embrace our beautiful lifestyle. Here at Jaz Build, we encourage our clients to consider any preparation and potential renovation decisions in plenty of time. Typically people will call with last minute requests that are impossible to complete in time, but by planning and booking ahead these jobs can be easily completed to let you relax and enjoy the experience. Jaz Build has found that clients are enjoying the great benefits of investing in their own property, and creating a perfect entertaining space. A new bar, deck or outdoor entertainment area will bring the party to you and save you money in the long term.

A new deck can add value to your home and offer much needed sun protection for the family and pets. Decks also cool the house and outdoor zones, and provide a great extension of the family home, as well as the opportunity to have some fun in a safe and comfortable entertaining environment. Other popular additions for summer include pizza ovens, fire pits, pool decking and outdoor BBQs, as well as new patios to extend the family living area. Also popular are requests for extensions to provide extra room for guests and / or more space for the family. Jaz Build have a great team of professionals to ensure the very best service delivery for clients. The team includes, Greg Small Electrical, Nick Cole Plumbing, John at 2 Bob Earthworks, Bill at MCD Kitchens and John at Glasshouse Country Pest Control.

We offer people a design advice that can include changing the feel of a dull room to lighten the space and revitalise your home. You can't buy the views we have in city real estate – so make the most of this lucky country region and let us assist in helping you fully enjoy your living space.

Growing plants from cuttings

Growing your own plants from cuttings can be a very satisfying way to boost your garden stocks without breaking the bank account. It can also be a rather sociable way to meet the neighbours – “nice hydrangea, do you mind if I take a cutting?” But best of all is that you end up with exactly the same plant that you took the cutting from. Same flower colour, same growth habit, same leaf shape, same genetics. This can’t be guaranteed if you grow a plant from seed. So, what are some of the basics about taking and striking cuttings? Some plants strike better from softwood cuttings, some from hardwood cuttings, and some from semi-hardwood cuttings. Each different plant will have different requirements. Ask another gardener or one of our local nursery staff if you’re not sure. Cuttings must be as fresh as can be. Don’t take cuttings and leave them for a few hours. Try to keep them cool and in a plastic bag. Take the cuttings from a healthy plant that is not under moisture stress. It is debatable whether the end of the cutting needs to be directly below a leaf node, but it’s probably safer to use this approach. Again, it is debatable whether it’s beneficial to use a rooting compound or not – but it doesn’t hurt, so use one. The potting mixture needs to allow for free drainage and lots of oxygen around the stem. You can make your own using 75-80% coarse washed sand and the rest as peat moss. After a couple of days, the cuttings stop taking in moisture through their stem, so it’s important to keep the humidity high around the cutting so that it doesn’t lose water. The easiest way to do this is to use bent wire and a plastic bag pulled over and tied at the top. Most people tend to strip back the leaves to a couple and then cut them in half to reduce moisture loss. Modern research tends to suggest this may not make too much difference, but like the rooting compound, it doesn’t hurt. The cuttings will also tend to strike better if they are kept slightly warm from the base. You can do this using a commercial warming tray, or you can try sitting the bagged pot on top of a hot water unit. Keep the pots in the shade, and keep the mixture moist but not saturated as this will rot the cuttings. Only fertilise the cuttings once they have formed roots. Look at the base of the pot – if you can see roots through the drain holes, then it’s time to fertilise with a half strength soluble fertiliser. After about eight weeks (longer in cooler weather), the cuttings should have taken root and they can be taken out of their protective bag. The next important step is to harden them off. You can do this by keeping them under shade cloth in a semi-shade location, but protect them from drying winds. It’s best to separate cuttings into different pots at this stage. After two weeks, take them out from the shade cloth. Then after another two weeks, you can put them into a more open spot to finish hardening off. After another eight weeks, they are ready to be planted out or potted up into larger pots.

LUTHERAN CHURCH

Sunday Worship & Sunday School 9.00am

Father Harry Reuss - Maleny Anglican Parish Christmas is truly a blessed time. The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the manger in Bethlehem and his subsequent life changed the whole course of history and even led the Roman Emperor Constantine in 313 AD to pursue a policy of religious freedom. In 321 he ordered that Sunday should be a public holiday and liberally endowed Christian church buildings at holy places in Rome, Palestine and Constantinople. Constantine was Baptised shortly before his death in 337. Christmas is preceded by the Advent Season in the Christian Church which begins this year on Advent Sunday, December 2. The season of Advent contains the four weeks leading up to Christmas and is a period of preparation and waiting, and looking forward to a very important event in the life of those in the Christian faith. The Liturgical (worship) colour for the season is purple. This colour symbolises a time of preparation, penitence and watchfulness. The same colour is used for the season of Lent which, like Advent, encourages Christians to prepare for the event that season prefixes, which, of course, is Easter.

Contact 5439 9341 or 5496 9671

Even though we observe these seasons and events every year, their value and importance never diminishes. As these times and seasons come around each year it gives us an opportunity to look at the seasons with fresh eyes; come to them with the experience of the past; be more knowledgeable about the history and reason for the observance and receive something about the season we haven’t previously experienced. You may remember from your own childhood or that of your children, the Advent Calendars which takes one on a journey of discovery by opening a window each day from the first Sunday of Advent to the day of Christmas. Each window gives a glimpse of what can be expected as one waits for the blessed event at the end. I believe that hope plays a very important role in the season of Advent. Even though we are postChristmas people, knowing what Christmas is all about because it is historic to us, hope still exists because we have new opportunities to explore in our Christian life and to build on what has already been experienced over the years. It is my hope and prayer that you and your family have a Holy and Blessed Advent and Christmas.

Sport San Team novice players shine The largest team to date of seven players from San Training Centre competed in the Queensland Taekwondo club championships on the weekend, to bring home the gold medals, two silver and two bronze. Included in the team were four players at their first competition. Jack Brander, Keil Bickle, Harley Treverton and Brodie Treverton all showed great talent and spirit that sets us up well for next year. Our junior blue belt player Emma Hall lost in a tough fight against a larger and older opponent to finish with bronze. Jack Brander fought well in his debut match that tested the fitness of both the fighters. It was a close, intense match and he lost by a few points to finish with a silver. Keil Bickle and Aaron Lerch were matched in the same division which also included the current national champion who Keil fought in the first round. It was a tough challenge in his first ever fight, showing great spirit but eventually losing to finish with a bronze. Aaron came up against the same opponent in the finals, showing great tactics to neutralise his opponent and win six points to 0 for the gold. This was a sweet victory after an unlucky loss at the Nationals two months ago and much hard training – up to eight or nine sessions per week. Josh Collins and Brodie Treverton both had their opponents withdraw and so they fought each

Keil, Aaron, Harley, Jack and Brodie at the Qld Club Challenge other for some ring experience and a chance to try some techniques. Eleven -year-old Harley Treverton made his instructors proud, fighting a much taller 13-yearold. Harley fought hard the entire match, eventually losing 4-0 despite having his opponent on the back foot several times through the fight. Students now look to the next gradingin December which will see several students testing for their black belts, before having a small break from training over the holiday season.

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Human years Day one God created the dog and said, “sit all day at your house and bark at anyone who walks past. For this I will give you a life span of 20 years.” The dog said, “that’s a long time to be barking, how about I give you back 10?” God agreed. Day two God created the monkey “entertain people and make them laugh - I’ll give you 20 years.” The monkey said, “tricks for 20 years? How about I give you back 10?” God agreed. Day three God created the cow. “Work with the farmer all day, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. I will give you 60 years.”

The cow said “that’s a tough life for 60 years. I’ll give back the 40.” God agreed. Day four God created humans. “Eat, sleep, play and enjoy your life. I’ll give you 20 years.” But the human said: “Only 20? Can I have my 20, the cows 40 and also the monkeys 10 the and the dogs 10 they gave back, that makes 80?” God agreed. That’s why for our first 20 years we eat, sleep and enjoy ourselves. For the next 40 years we support our family. For the next 10 years we do tricks to entertain our grandchildren and for the last 10 we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Submitted by Eunice Prickett, Peachester

ARIES March 21 – April 20 The full Moon comes up this week releasing your impulses to review your stalled travel plans and to possibly find the best discounted booking fees. You might feel as though you are in a dream, however you are entitled to find time for fun and to go shopping! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Venus is your ruling planet and as much as you would like peace and quiet, the planet Uranus, moving through the sign of Aries, has other plans. This can spell breakthroughs or breakups! The full Moon makes this a prime period to get your house in order. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This full Moon week plays out the ongoing drama between you and others. Emotions can be crushed with silly statements, so under an emotional Moon like this, do not let disappointments, or a crashed dream let you down. Everything gets better by the weekend. CANCER June 22 – July 22 The beginning of the week may have been slightly disturbing, but not necessarily so. Activities at home may have a few surprises in store. There may be a good aspect to make a profit from a new renovation idea. A desire to escape from current frustrations.

LEO July 23 – August 22 There is accent on travel plans. This is because this week brings restlessness, anxiety and confusion in what direction to go. With the full Moon spanning your sectors of connection and pleasure, there is no need to scatter your energies or overdo your strengths. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 New possibilities are exciting with shared resources. The full Moon leads to interesting discussions but any certainty of which direction to go may be best delayed for a few days. Your congenial attitude wins the day attracting monetary and social success! LIBRA September 23 – October 22 As the Sun has entered the sign of Sagittarius, last weekend, that fiery energy expands your local universe for the next month. Someone needs freedom or space on a higher level of excitement. Serious thinking continues with you leading to a decision on health. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This is the week that you could find out that you are acting like a real dynamo and have clever ideas about how to get chores and repairs done quickly! This full Moon week says do your homework before making decisions that would drain you emotionally or financially.

Week beginning 25/11/2015 SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This full Moon week, falls across your sector of making a partner’s feelings the prime mover in how things change going forward. The Sun has entered your birthday month so get ready to set sound intentions for what you would like to manifest in the coming year. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 You may like things to be predictable, but with the sun moving through the sign of Sagittarius, and the full Moon in Gemini, you will find fast changes. This means sudden arrivals or new contracts require adjustments but makes life exciting. Communicate clearly. AQUARIUS January – February 19 You do achieve success this week under the fiery energy of the Sagittarius Sun. You find yourself attending to responsibilities by taking care of financial obligations. There are further upbeat friendships with positive progressive, visionary people. Expect safe travelling. PISCES February 20 – March 20 This full Moon period may intensify home vs. work conflicts and so warns you to be careful making decisions. The reason may be that all facts might not be in yet! Fresh conversations can help you out. Shun wistful thinking and just make time to clear away clutter.
