Hi Everyone...

Well, there are lots of local events that we get behind each year and long time readers would definitely be familiar with the Beerwah Charity Sport and Spring Carnival. It has been held at the Beerwah Sportsground for over 40 years – and it's on again on Saturday August 26. The organising committee behind the event are a dedicated bunch and they are already hard at work. I am pretty sure they are on a mission to make this year another record-breaking fundraising effort for the Cancer Council Queensland. This week we have included a reminder about their Scarecrow competition. Brownie and I haven’t yet decided which category the GC&M News Office should enter, but the categories are Scariest, Funniest, Most Creative, People’s Choice, Traditional and Business Premises. Entries must be completed and on display by Monday August 7, so time is marching on. We have previously featured both Lois Lane (journalist) and Clark Kent (photographer by day and Superman when required), as well as a Brownie the Gardener scarecrow, so fortunately we still have a little bit of time for some inspiration. If you are thinking about getting the kids organised and making a scarecrow of your own, check out the Beerwah Charity Sports Day Regards, Facebook page for all the competition requirements.

Customers who place display advertisements before the deadline of midday Friday will receive a proof of their prepared advertisement. As previously reported in GC&M News (December 14, 2016), a development application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to expand the existing quarry on the Beerburrum-Woodford Road at Beerburrum. A public notice was published in the July 5 edition of GC&M News calling for public comments on the proposed development, with comments needing to be in to council by July 27 to be considered as ‘properly made’. In response, the community of Beerburrum hastily organised a town meeting last Thursday evening to hear about the proposal and to ask questions of the staff and consultants from the Barro Group – who lodged the development application – as well as planning and development officers from Sunshine Coast Council. Attended by more than fifty locals, the forum ran well into the night, with open and honest discussions from both sides. Residents are concerned that the operations will negatively affect their quality of life, with blasting, noise, dust, regular heavy truck movements through town and visual amenity impacts. The Barro Group representatives countered all concerns with information, maps and details from studies undertaken as part of the development application. But many residents weren’t totally convinced. Some related experiences with previous proposals for the region – including battles with existing quarries, the siting of a radioactive dump and the

establishment of a women’s prison – and spoke of the emotional scars those battles left within the community for many years. “I fear we’re heading down the same direction,” one woman stated. “Our perception is that we feel authorities treat us as a dumping ground for things that no one else wants near them. “It’s high time that this area is treated with respect; that its heritage and tourism values are treated with respect; and that we who live here are treated with respect.” Others suggested that the trucks be routed down Old Gympie Road and then Coonowrin Road, as this is already a fortified road for trucks usage. The Barro Group General Manager for Queensland, Ian Ridoutt, explained that they are not like a developer. “The Barro Group is a long established company, and we have to live and work in the communities where our quarries operate for many years,” he said to the meeting. “We like to become part of the community wherever we set up operations.” Council staff clarified the process they will follow in assessing the application, stressing that it is vital people make submissions. “We still accept and consider submissions after the cut off date (July 27), so don’t think you’ve run out of time,” they explained. More details can be found by going to www. pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and searching for ‘MCU16/0275’.

Push for Ewen Maddock Dam Forum Back in October 2016, GC&M News reported on a childcare centre development application made to Sunshine Coast Council. The application was subsequently withdrawn by the proponent (Connected Learning Outcomes Pty Ltd) in late February 2017 due to Seqwater (operators of Ewen Maddock Dam) raising dam safety issues, and stating that as a result “the location of the proposed development presents a significant risk to human life and property”. According to a spokesperson for the proponent, the news that the dam has safety issues which could affect not only any development at the old Mooloolah Valley Country Club site, but have catastrophic consequences for those living downstream, was information not previously known. “We feel as though we were blindsided by council,” said the spokesperson. “Council must have known at the pre-lodgement meeting that Seqwater would be asked to provide this third party advice. We believe this should have been initialled at the earliest possible time, providing us with a complete picture of the potential factors that could impact on our proposal. We could have saved significant money and effort!” State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle last week wrote to the CEO of Seqwater and the Minister for Energy and Water Supply Mark Bailey to request that a community forum be held in response to reports of a potential “flood failure zone” for Ewen Maddock Dam.

Mr McArdle said that the communities of Landsborough, Glenview and Mooloolah Valley may well be very concerned about potential risk to their businesses, homes and families. “Firstly, I believe that the report concerning the safety of the dam needs to be made available for the public. Fear of the unknown is a powerful thing and until the community is able to see the information for themselves, worry can gnaw away,” Mr McArdle said. “The forum could serve to answer many questions that the public may have regarding their personal safety and associated risk with living within the dam’s flood zone. “Reports have also indicated that work will begin on upgrading the dam in 2019. I have requested that this be a topic of discussion if the forum is to take place so that the community could be advised of what will be undertaken and how that date was decided upon. “My hope this that a decision to hold a community meeting is made swiftly and some assurance can be given to those communities that could potentially be impacted if a dam failure were to occur.” The forum could then answer some of the questions that Connected Learning Outcomes has.

DOCTORS NOW OPEN

“Why has approval been granted for the ‘Sanad Capital Water Park’ when it is in the exact same flood zone from the dam wall as our proposal (0-1 hr flood zone)?” asks the spokesperson. “Third party advice from Seqwater was not sought for this application! Why not? “How will the Seqwater proposed increase in holding capacity impact users downstream in the case of a sunny day dam failure? Areas including Parrearra, Meridan and Currimundi are included in the time to flood ‘yellow zone’ of 1-2 hours. How is any increase in risk to populations being mitigated and why is an increase in the dam wall height required? “What is the actual likelihood of a sunny day dam failure... 1 in 15,000 years? We sought this information from Seqwater over the course of three months but it has not yet been provided. “If Seqwater is now saying there is no risk (as Mike Foster of Seqwater was quoted on 7 News: “The community downstream of Ewen Maddock Dam can be absolutely confident that the dam continues to operate safely. There is no imminent risk.”), why did they say there was significant risk to human life and property in the communication provided to council?” Watch this space for further details.

NBN towers explained Continuing in our series where we look at the recent NBN wireless broadband tower development proposals, this week we review Burgess Avenue, North Maleny and Old Peachester Road, Peachester.

The application documents deem that the proposal is compliant with all the relevant planning scheme codes and provides an important community benefit, and as such should be approved by Council.

NBN Tower – Burgess Avenue, North Maleny (MCU17/2005) The proposal is for a 45m monopole tower with two parabolic dish antennas and three panel antennas attached to provide fixed wireless broadband to about 180 properties around the Burgess Avenue locality. The area has been rated as having a quality rating of ‘D’ or ‘E’ for existing ADSL broadband services. The wireless coverage from the tower will extend about 2km west up to Avocado Lane, about 1km south past Mountain View Road, about 2.5km northwest up to Obi Lane, and 1km east almost to Mary Cairncross Avenue. The facility will work in conjunction with the proposed ‘Maleny East’ (Sinclairs Lane) tower and the approved facility ‘Wilkes Knob’. The tower is to function as a mini-hub site, intended to support downstream services transmitting from an as-yet proposed facility anticipated at Reesville. A total of 24 possible locations were investigated, with only one landholder (Burgess Avenue) expressing any interest in hosting a tower. The location of the tower is set back on an avocado farm behind 85 Burgess Avenue, with the nearest residential house being 220m away.

NBN Tower – Old Peachester Road, Peachester (MCU17/2007) The proposal is for a 40m monopole tower with two parabolic dish antennas and four panel antennas attached to provide fixed wireless broadband to about 660 properties both in Peachester and surrounds, reaching into rural west Beerwah. The area has been rated as having quality rating of ‘E’ for existing ADSL broadband services, except for a region receiving a ‘B’ quality rating. Fibre cable services have been rejected in the report as the “cost to upgrade Peachester to fixed line services is estimated to be in excess of one million dollars”. NBN say that the Peachester community has

Have fun acting failed to take up options through the Technology Choice Program to apply for upgrades. The wireless coverage from the tower will extend 3.5km north past Elsa Court, 4km west past Butlers Lane, more than 4km southeast past Old Gympie Road, and 3km east to Peachester Road. The tower is to function as a mini-hub site, intended to support downstream services transmitting from the approved fixed wireless facilities at Eudlo and ‘Wilkes Knob’, as well as data transmitting from the as-yet to be proposed facility anticipated at Mount Mellum. It is designed to transmit data back to the approved fibre hub facility at Beerwah (Rupari Hill). A total of 15 possible locations were investigated, with a further six as suggested by a local resident. Only one landholder expressed an interest in hosting a tower, but the location was discounted. The location of the tower is on a forested road reserve near the junction of Old Peachester Road and Range Road. The closest residential dwelling is 135m, with a number of other houses being not much further away. The application documents deem that the proposal is compliant with all the relevant planning scheme codes and provides an important community benefit, and as such should be approved by Council.

Next week, we’ll look at the Conondale and Beerburrum proposals.

If you are over eighteen and under forty and would like to try some acting, the Maleny Players would love to hear from you, even if you have never done it before. Or perhaps you have acted in the past and are now ready to again. Sometimes people are surprised to find what an enjoyable and satisfying experience it can be. Live performance can be magic whether you are on stage or in the audience. Parts are available now for both men and women in several short plays. Some of these are very easy fun parts and would be a great way to try out amateur theatre. There are also parts that will appeal to those with experience, but could be handled by committed beginners. Good coaching and direction will be provided. Two parts that are available (one male and one female) will be ‘script in hand’ performances in a relaxed setting. For these you will need to be familiar with the lines but won’t have to memorise them. Get a kick out of reading the work of some of the world’s greatest playwrights in a friendly atmosphere. Later in the year there will be even more opportunities. So let us know what interests you. Business News Landsborough Chamber of Commerce on horizon State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle last week met with a group of Landsborough business owners who are gaining momentum with their plan to establish a local Chamber of Commerce. It comes as residents have been left reeling over a lack of community consultation surrounding the State Government’s proposal for a rail overpass. Business owners say that it’s clear that a commerce body is needed to ensure the town will survive and thrive during and after the major infrastructure change. Terry Morrow, owner of the Landsborough Hotel, said, “It’s time. We have grown as a community and having a Chamber of Commerce is the only way forward.” Mr McArdle said that while the overpass proposal may have been the catalyst for the Chamber’s creation, it would not be the only issue of focus. “The matter of Landsborough’s rail crossing certainly sparked the idea of a Chamber of Commerce, but it is clear from this first meeting that there are many issues of equal importance that will need to be addressed if the chamber is formed,” Mr McArdle said. The various businesses supporting the formation of a chamber include familiar names such as the Landsborough Hotel, BP, Landsborough Chemist, 3 Divas Café, IGA, Buck’s Bakery and the Landsborough School of Arts & Memorial Hall. “It is about like-minded people working together to bring back the heart of Landsborough,” Cheryl Rutland-Lockett, owner of BP Landsborough,

said. It’s this sentiment, for a united community and a chance for Landsborough to prosper that was at the forefront of Thursday’s meeting. “What this town needs is an action group that is working together for a common goal,” Ashley Grigor, owner of Landsborough IGA, said. Tim Watson, owner of Buck’s Bakery agreed: “It’s about bringing together the ideals of the community.” Gemma Webster, owner of 3 Divas Café said, “Right now our town is very lost and we’re moving backward faster than we are moving forward.

“The Chamber could help give Landsborough an identity,” Ms Webster said. Tim Fitzpatrick, owner of the Landsborough Chemist, said that a Chamber would support more than just the business owners – it would contribute to an economy that caters to the needs of locals. “It is important that we nurture Landsborough from a business perspective. If we make sure that the businesses are being focused on, it will make it pleasant and easy for residents to conduct their business in town locally,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.

Knitfest 2017 - A weekend of colour, yarn and fun

Contributed by Festival Director, Debs Swain This year's Knitfest Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival was a resounding success with well over 8,000 people attending. The highlight this year was definitely the workshops with over 300 people attending various fibre art workshops. The competition standards were very high making it a tough choice for the judges. 1st place for the Tree Cosies went to the Caloundra Yarnbombers’ ‘Jellyfish Tree’ with the Conondale Sport and Rec Club's tree in front of Easton Lawyers in 2nd place. The spinning and weaving venue at the RSL on Saturday was very popular with trade stalls, demonstrations, guest speakers and patting the alpacas while the main venue at the Primary School hall was buzzing all weekend. Knitfest would like to thank the Knitfest Yarnbombers for the many months of work involved creating the decorations for the event and the many volunteers this year who helped make the event run so smoothly. Knitfest would also like to especially thank Councillor Jenny McKay and Cloud Forest Yarns for stepping in to help out at the last minute. Thank you to all our local business sponsors for letting us decorate your businesses and to our major sponsors Sunshine Coast Council, Maleny Credit Union and Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. Support local businesses who support you. We're already planning next year's event on June 30th – July 1st, 2018 when the theme will be ‘Outer Space’. Knitfest Yarnbombers Anne Defaveri, Una Robinson, Merrin Shaw, Carole Kellow, Judy Caesar, Debs Swain, Julie Williams, Lindel Kielly and Marnie Lee.

Community News Local family hosts French exchange student

By Sonia Clark A local Hinterland family recently enjoyed the opportunity to host a French exchange student for six weeks as part of a three month exchange Emily, Eloise and Alice program organised through ‘Students of the enjoy the CityCat World’. The Grigor family (Lisa, Andrew and daughters Emily and Eloise) were pleased to have been chosen to host 16-year-old Alice, who was the only student out of a group of ten French students to travel to Queensland. Lisa and Andrew’s daughters Emily and Eloise are in Year 11 and 12 at Glasshouse Christian College and have been studying the French language since Prep. When the school advised families that an opportunity was available to host an international student, the Grigor family were keen to express their interest and were subsequently thrilled to learn that they had been chosen as a host family. The family have had an incredible time learning and sharing information about the difference in cultures and, as this was Alice’s first time in Australia, the Grigors were keen to show her the highlights of our beautiful region. Some of the highlights included a day at Australia Zoo, visiting the coastal beaches, bushwalking through Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and Mapleton Falls National Park and a picturesque climb of Mt Ngungun. Other sightseeing included a day out in Brisbane visiting South Bank, City Mall and Eat Street Markets, travelling on the Citycat Ferry down the Brisbane River and riding the City Wheel. While Alice communicated very well in English, Lisa and the family had a great time trying to bring a little bit of French into their conversations and the exchange was a great success. “We have really enjoyed having Alice stay with us and feel privileged to have been chosen as her host family,” Lisa said. “It has been a very fulfilling experience that we would highly recommend to others.”

Neil wins ‘Little Red Run’

By Sonia Clark Regular readers will be familiar with our previous stories following the progress of Glass House Mountains resident Neil Collie, who this year tackled the ‘The Big Red Run’ six-day event through the Simpson Desert. The annual fundraiser, which took place from June 24-29, has a gruelling 250km course, and this year 55 runners from around Australia raised over $155,000 to help fight Juvenile Diabetes. With exceptionally high temperatures over the two first days of the course, Neil was forced to recalculate his race plans and drop back to completing the ‘Little Red Run’ six day course of 150km. “Day one of the race was 42km and it ended up being 46 degrees!” he said. “I suffered heat stroke and really struggled getting to the finish line. I got quite sick but got to the end and then, by the second day, decided to drop to the 150km race as my recovery from the previous day wasn’t quite where I needed to be.” Fully embracing his personal motto of ‘Dream, Believe, Achieve’ (especially after recovering from a debilitating stroke a few years back), Neil went on to achieve a first, second and third placing over the next four days and overall was the first male to reach the 150km finish line. Highlights of the event for Neil were the opportunity to meet and run with some truly inspiring people and the gratitude for being out in some of Australia's most amazing countryside. “There were a lot of tears from emotions happy, sad and inspired, and I would highly recommend any runners or walkers to try either distance. It was truly a life changing experience and I returned from Birdsville the best version of me,” enthused Neil. Neil has already decided to tackle the event again next year and next on his action list is preparing for the Blackall100 run in October.

Personal touch is key for local artist

By Sonia Clark Local artisan Kaz Pidgeon has just wrapped up an exhibition showcasing a collection of her latest handcrafted silver pieces at the Graydon Gallery in Brisbane. A highly talented and intuitive artist, Kaz creates uniquely beautiful silver jewellery pieces that are timeless in their appeal. After months of working to create the 72 pieces to exhibit at the inaugural ‘OpenArtery’ exhibition, the Glass House Mountains local is currently taking a well earned break before heading back to her various commitments. Kaz has been silver smithing for over 15 years and what had originally started as a passionate hobby has developed into a thriving small business. Basically self taught, Kaz was fortunate to find a mentor in “an incredible” silversmith, David Hayes, who took her under his wing and encouraged her enquiry into the craft. With only a few formal lessons, her passion for silver jewellery creation was ignited at a young age and has driven her to create the work that is appreciated by many. “My mum's jewellery was all gold but for one wide silver bracelet that I loved more than all the other pieces. When I was 10 years old, I spent my life savings on two rings from a local jeweller who opened up a funky little studio in my home town. It was the best $7 I'd ever spent!” said Kaz. All of the stones used in Kaz’s designs are handpicked and personally sourced from small business people like herself. Some stones are from her travels to India, Nepal, Thailand and Indonesia and purchased from back street traders and small time stone dealers.

Some are pieces are from Australia, and Kaz has bought pieces of boulder opal and Tasmanian variscite directly from the people who mine, cut and polish them. It is evident from her work that Kaz has a special affinity with turquoise and she has just recently bought some amazing pieces from the US – all direct from small time miners and stone cutters. When creating her designs, like many artistic folk, Kaz has numerous ideas and designs that swim around in her head, however it is when she sits down with a specific stone that she wants to work with that the inspiration is channelled to take form. “My favourite pieces always have a textured, tribal or ethnic style to them. I want to make pieces that are not the usual run of the mill – I want them to be one of a kind pieces that 'look' handmade not mass produced and pieces that will last. Pieces that you love to wear not just love looking at in your jewellery box,” Kaz said. Over the years, many people kept asking Kaz about silver smithing lessons, so for the last eight years she has also been sharing her expertise with others through her silver smithing and advanced stone setting workshops held at various times throughout the year. Kaz believes that “the personal touch is key” and is always willing to sit down and have a chat with people about what they are looking for in a piece of jewellery before she begins. To find out more about her, visit her Birdsong Silver Facebook page.

Photo restoration and picture framing At Beerwah Picture Framing, on top of Seb’s usual picture framing services, he is doing a lot of photo restoration work. Seb is pleased that he is able to offer both services in house. An artistic high is how Seb describes bringing life back to wonderful photographic images for his clients. Many photos are family history, the type of history that is the very fabric of our society. The original photographs are very often from several generations back and have been degraded by time, insects, dust and the elements, so the work can be very demanding. If you have old photographs that are important to you it is worth calling into Seb’s studio so that he can do a free appraisal for you, to assess the viability and cost of doing a restoration job. Part of the process is getting the original ready for scanning. On this issue Seb reckons “if the art is framed don’t be tempted to disassemble the piece as it is safer to let a framer who is familiar with the construction of picture frames carry out that task.”

Seb can do a high quality scan from a photo, negative or transparency. Large size of the original art isn’t normally a problem because Seb can use his photo studio gear and high resolution camera to digitise larger photographic pieces. Of course if you have an image that has been sent

to you on a disc or thumb drive it can go straight to Seb’s computer to be worked on as long as it is of sufficiently high quality and is large enough. Seb’s pet hate is images from phones which are usually too small to print at anything over postcard size. If a client has a number of photographs and wishes to display them together Seb will take that into consideration in planning the project. Seb can reproduce a colour original as a sepia tone or a black and white to allow it to fit into a set of old photographs. He can also work with the sizes to equalise them. Seb looks at every job as an individual challenge and he loves a challenge. Of course Seb can apply the same methods that he applies to photo restoration to any flat art,

be it watercolour painting, canvas painting, a drawing, etc. Seb has a great eye for picking the appropriate framing for the restored and reproduced art, keeping in mind the era and style of the original and how it will be displayed now. All of Seb’s restorations are printed on his wide format Epson professional printer using genuine Epson archival inks and papers. Seb says call him to make an appointment to check out your photo restoration options. You can view Seb's advertisement in the Trades and Services section of the GC&M News each week.

Red Hatters visit Glasshouse Country

The Ruby Dolls of Pine Rivers Red Hat Chapter recently took part in a mystery tour of the Sunshine Coast organised by one of their members, Denise Mitchell. Denise managed to surprise the ladies by arranging with Maggie Shalhoub of Live It Tours for them to meet Lauren Brisbane and her staff of Q Camel. None of the ladies had tasted camel milk before, so that was a first along with the opportunity to feed and pat the docile camels. A couple of the camels were very interested in the hats the ladies were wearing. The camel milk muffins and light refreshments contributed to making the visit an unforgettable experience. From there the convoy of cars travelled to Glass House Mountains and visited the Visitor and Interpretive Centre to read all about the history of the area and purchase jams and chutneys. Then it was onto The Black Squirrel at Beerburrum for a wonderful lunch which the Red Hatters can highly recommend. There was one more surprise and that was a visit to Rolin Farms at Elimbah to pick our own strawberries. Unfortunately because of the rain the night before this was not possible. No matter, the ladies purchased lots of strawberries and jam and some had coffee. It was a wonderful day and the ladies would like to have another mystery tour of this beautiful area. Rotary Changeover Dinner

The Rotary Club of the Glasshouse Mountains held its Changeover Dinner on July 3 at the Beerwah Hotel, which is the club’s usual meeting place. MC for the evening, Past President Tony Long, welcomed members, past members, visiting dignitaries including the DGE for District 9600 Wendy Protheroe, visiting Rotarians and visitors. In his address to the meeting outgoing president Rod Jones DGE for District 9600, Wendy presented the current state of Protheroe, congratulates re-elected affairs of the club. He made note of President Rod Jones the presentation of two Paul Harris Fellowship Awards, one to Past President Tony Long and one to Bindi Irwin of Australia Zoo for her contribution to the environment and the Beerwah community, and a Pride of Work presentation to Stephen Rook of Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Service. Rod praised the work of the club in its contribution to international, national, state and local endeavours. President Rod stated that, in spite of the limited number of members, the club always punches above its weight where it matters most – in the community – and that as club president he was proud of the small but tight group. Rod thanked the club for its confidence in his presidency during the previous year and, with the help of the members, vowed to make his second term as president even more productive than his first.

CommunityGroups Shared interest unites

Contributed by Patty Beecham What do a retired policeman, an accountant, a dementia nurse and a get-up-and-go rockabilly musician have in common? They are all new members of the Beerwah Writers Group! The group brings together local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing, from the light and humorous, through insightful and compassionate to the darkly dangerous. Established in 2006 by a group of likeminded people who wanted to share their experience with writing, the group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month in the Beerwah Library. Members attending usually donate a gold coin to defray the cost of morning refreshment. New members are welcome and encouraged. A yearly subscription of $5 applies. If you are keen to write but not sure of where to start, please join us at our meeting this Friday, July 28 from 10am to noon. Enquiries: Susan on 0439 258 047 or email sandrush@ bigpond.net.au. Still Stompin’ puts on a ‘Thriller’

Contributed by Julie Allen Our Still Stompin’ Michael Jackson day was an outstanding success. Huge thanks to all who put in an amazing effort! We had, of course, all Michael Jackson music for our class, with 1st prize shared by Terry Gibson (back with mask) and Debs Michelutti (front right). Second prize went to Diana Michael (left front kneeling) and third prize to Astara Pendragon (front right, kneeling). We had amazing day, and all well and truly participated, with loads of laughs. Following the class, we had a picnic at Skippy Park, with yummy food, and an egg and spoon race, of course done only with the Moon Walk – and it was won by Joan, Diana and Megs! If you would like to join us for a ton of fun, our classes are currently being run in the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Hall each Tuesday 10.30am, returning to the School of Arts Landsborough on Tuesday August 8. Powerful, beautiful, delicate... is the tuba!

An afternoon of music enjoyment awaits you at the Maleny Community Centre. The Voice of the Tuba, John Szkutko, returns to perform an all new recital program. Like John's first recital earlier this year, another highly eclectic and entertaining program will be presented. Writing music can be inspired by almost anything. On this program you will hear a work specifically written for a beer loving tuba player from Texas, USA. It is called Six Pack, written by J. Meador. This very interesting work will take you through six stages of ... enjoying beer! In contrast, the recently arranged ‘Animal Suite’ (music of Saint-Saens) will feature the tuba at its soft, brilliant and beautiful best. You will hear the Tortoise, Elephant and Swan come alive during this performance. Familiar favourites, unique new tuba pieces and arrangements compliment these two works, creating a diverse and entertaining program for you. John Szkutko is a highly experienced musician and performer residing in Maleny. His experience is now being utilised in two schools, teaching the up and coming brass musicians of the Sunshine Coast. Along with presenting entertaining tuba recitals, another part of the Voice of the Tuba – In Concert series is to present other musicians to Maleny and the Sunshine Coast. School News The night sky inspires students

Contributed by Amy-Jean Pope Recently members of Brisbane Astronomy Society (BAS) aligned with the Glass House Mountains State School, Year 5A and 5B classes and their families at 6pm ready for a night of star gazing, planet watching, moon gawking and meteor marvelling. The night was a cool evening with a clear sky. Looking through the telescopes the students could see a number of space fascinations including the colossal planets of Saturn and Jupiter as well as some complex star clusters termed the Jewel Box, the Butterfly and the Starfish. Teacher Denise Sammut said, “The meteor was definitely one of the night’s highlights, I couldn’t believe my eyes as the ball of fire streaked across the night sky and burnt itself out.” Robyn Downs, another teacher, however couldn’t decide whether it was more fascinating seeing the rings around Saturn or the sparkling jewels in the Jewel Box cluster. The clear cloudless sky, along with minimal street light interference, allowed the students to gaze upon the dazzling constellations of Scorpius, the Teapot and the ever faithful Two Pointers and the Southern Cross. Bill, Colin and Ken from BAS were informative, organised and engaging for the students. They had answers for all the many questions that the students asked and although there were questions about unidentified object sightings, thankfully no UFOs were actually sighted. One student, Myah, said she can’t wait to learn more about Astronomy, and that “space is awesome”, while another student, Flynn, was astonished at all the planets and things they could see as they swapped telescopes. The night wrapped up at 8pm and students and families went home to rest while our mysterious universe danced above with twinkling lights and shooting stars.

Clowning around in school

Contributed by Sandy Johnson Glasshouse Christian College Grade Nine Drama students were given full permission to clown around in class last week. However, there was a serious side as the clowning skills workshop was the foundation for an end of term Chloe Stanley went from cranky to assessment. joyful seamlessly Trained clown and drama teacher, Mr Athol Henderson, shared his knowledge and skills with the students. Mr Henderson showed students that the clown’s red nose is the smallest mask in the world of them all and was able to bring out great emotions from our students. Students took turns showing different emotions using the red nose as their mask and the results were astonishing. Even though they were doing this for the first time and hadn’t practised, the performances were entertaining and soon had the audience in stitches. The most difficult part of the performance was not joining in the audience laughter as Mr Henderson taught the students that this was forbidden under any circumstances. “The audience will feel cheated if you laugh with them,” he said. Mr Henderson also taught the students things like how to change from one emotion to another, how to move on stage and how to reattach a red nose if it fell off. GCC is looking forward to much fun and laughter as these students hone their craft.

Living - Arts The perfect setting to showcase local art

Local sculptors are busily working to prepare their pieces for the annual Sculpture on the Edge Awards to be held in the beautiful grounds of Spicers Tamarind, Maleny. Now in its seventh year, Sculpture on the Edge is a contemporary 3D Exhibition presented by Arts Connect over four weeks with nearly $9,000 up for grabs by local sculptors. First prize of $5,000 is proudly sponsored by Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Maleny. This year’s event is also sponsored by IGAMaleny (2nd Prize $1000), Montville Chamber & Illume Creations Montville (Hinterland Artist Award $1,000), Ray White Maleny (People’s Choice $500), Maleny Optical (Emerging Artist Award $500), Maleny Chamber of Commerce (Environmental Award $500) and MAD ‘Maleny Art Direct’ (First Time Entrant Award $250). This year, our biggest ever, we anticipate 40 new pieces of sculpture from established artists and exciting newcomers to the genre. The artist lineup includes Corrie Wight, Elli Schlunke, Yanni van Zijl, Sophy Blake, Noel Carroll, Mela Cooke, Tina Cooper, Richard Egglestone, Leisa Gunton, Kaye Leach, Rod Hammond, Cameron Rushton, Pam Walpole, Phil Willy, Jim Cox, Tamara Kirby, Tracey Lewis, Trevor Irvine, Belinda Stanton, Brian Sandstrom, Laura Vecmane, Glen Manning, Kathy Daly, Valerie Willy, Dorothy Haig, Winka von Fahland, Charles McGuire, Jules McCrae, Kerry MacKenzie and Barry Rosenberg. Entries will be available to view from September 29, the awards night and official opening will be held on Thursday October 5, and the exhibition will continue until October 25. It will be open from 9am to 5pm daily, with free entry. Spicers Tamarind Retreat is located at 88 Obi Lane South in Maleny.

Local young people shine in Obi Art Prize

River School students took out four awards in the Youth Category of the inaugural Obi Art Prize at the recent Painted Tie event held at the Maleny Community Centre. Acting Principal Ann Donoghoe said the school was extremely proud of all students who submitted works of art, with 10 students making the final cut for their artistic interpretation of this year’s theme – Respect. The youth award was won by 11-year-old Manisha Broom for her inspiring work of art titled Courage. In her words: “The bird in my picture is taking flight through a storm to a safe place and I respect the courage refugees need to flee.” The encouragement award was received by 10-yearold Kieran Reid, for her artwork titled The Healing Tree. Kieran said, “My artwork acknowledges Aboriginal wisdom and how Aboriginal people looked after the land in the past and still today. “It is about respecting nature, the elements and the animals. The image of the fire, the two logs, the two birds and the heart represents love for family and friends, the mountains and the tree represent strength, and the sun and the moon represent balance.” The Healing Field by 10-year-old Chloe Mead received second prize and Love in Families by eightyear-old Ishtah Keyalr Betts took out third prize. “The students’ artistic works reflect their deep understanding and compassion for all, complementing the purpose of the Obi Art Project, which is to raise funds for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to run social programs supporting indigenous healing, LGBTI community issues, domestic violence and refugees,” Anne said.

The July Open Studio Trail

This month we are pleased to introduce nine artists demonstrating at eight studio locations. Studios will be open between 10am and 4pm on the Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30. Our Feature Artist this month is Cathy Cogill who shares her long-time love and admiration of the ocean with us through her large wave paintings.

Creating artworks in acrylic on stretched canvases is her preferred medium for her ocean works, abstracts and images from Greece. Come and meet Cathy Cogill, Chris Blake, Christine Elcoate, Jacky Lowry, Jennifer Eurell, Jodi Archbold, Anne Gentry-Smith, and two artists at the McCotter-Musk Studio. They produce work in a variety of mediums including printmaking, pastels, acrylics, oils, ceramics, fabric art and photography. Artists will be demonstrating their various media and techniques and their artworks and merchandise will be available for purchasing. We are confident that you will enjoy not only our artists’ warm welcomes, artworks and studios, but also the beautiful scenery along your journey this month, whether you do the full trail, or part of the trail, or split it over the two days. Starting south of the range, the trail runs from Landsborough, Harper Creek and Maleny, then north through Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton to Nambour and Kiels Mountatin. Studios are open between 10am and 4pm. More information and maps are available at our website: www.artsconnectinc.com.au.

The historic pier, stretching 351 metres into Bramble Bay, was originally built in the 1880s to connect Brisbane with Sandgate. It was refurbished and reopened to the public in early 2016. As one of the longest recreational piers in Australia it has attracted many holiday makers since its early days.

Beauty& Beauty&Wellbeing Wellbeing Get gorgeous nails

With Claudia from Beerwah Hair and Beauty We are now offering the ‘Gelish Dip System’ nails, commonly known as SNS. If you haven’t seen them before they are best described as being between gel and acrylic. They are not as soft and flexible as gel but not quite a hard as traditional acrylic nails. They are most commonly applied over the natural nail, but can also be applied over tips and are available in a wide range of colours including glitters, shimmers, metallic, French manicure and cream colours. People who have tried the new system say it feels lighter and thinner than acrylic and less prone to breaking and chipping than gel nails. Much less damage is caused to your natural nails than acrylic causes and they don’t need to be cured under a UV or LED light. They only take around 40 minutes to apply, and are soaked off. They are perfect before a holiday as they are long lasting and durable. The cost of having them applied over a natural nail varies; colour is $40, French is $45 or with tips, $60.

When cured they are flexible yet strong, lightweight and long wearing and can last up to three weeks without chipping, cracking, dulling or peeling, if properly looked after. They require a quick soak off time without damage to the natural nail. Gel polish is applied over your natural nail or over acrylics and we have a wide range of artistic colours available for all occasions.

Health Check Better Hearing with ihear

Hearing is considered by many to be our most vital sense, enabling us to process everyday sounds so we can communicate clearly and interact safely in our daily environment – after all, we depend on our hearing 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Leading local hearing specialist ihear work to transform lives by providing better hearing. They look after the hearing needs of a wide range of locals including pension and DVA card holders, retirees, workers and children, making better hearing more convenient and accessible than ever. “As the world gets louder, the age of those with hearing loss gets younger and increasingly we are seeing people in their 40s and 50s coming to us with a hearing problem,” tells ihear Audiologist Shevawn Becker. “Today’s advances in digital technology mean the majority of hearing losses are treatable, with hearing aids providing better performance than ever, especially in noisy environments,” says Shevawn. It is recommended that those who are concerned about their hearing, or experience trouble hearing, have their hearing tested by a professional hearing specialist. ihear offer a wide range of solutions to suit all types of hearing loss, lifestyles and budgets, so there is no need to put off getting your hearing checked.

The Sense of an Ending

Jim Broadbent and Charlotte Rampling make the perfect stars, if not the perfect couple, for British confessional drama ‘The Sense of An Ending’, based on the novel by Julian Barnes, which won the Booker Prize in 2011. The story of an unusual inheritance sparking an exposé of past secrets examines the power of regret for grumpy elderly male retiree Tony Webster, who is forced to review past relationships with first love and cool QC ex-wife (Rampling), while balancing his current position as a father in support of pregnant daughter Susie (played by the well-known Michelle Dockery). Ubiquitous British actress Emily Mortimer appears as a mother bringing the dubious gift to Webster. Director Ritesh Batra was also KG responsible for the entertaining Mumbai love story ‘The Lunchbox’. The film screens at the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday July 29 at 7.15pm, following dinner which is available from 6pm and will be catered by Lumbini Nepalese Restaurant. There will also be a drinks bar and tea and coffee stand with homemade treats. Members may pre-book online or via the Maleny Information Centre. The general public can purchase tickets at the door.

Another great event

Maleny experienced beautiful weather for the Annual Muscle on the Mountain event held on July 2. A fantastic number of vehicles, new and old, covered the main arena as far as the eye could see. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere thanks to the Maleny Show Society, who have been our biggest supporter since the inception of the event. The community is fortunate to have such a fantastic venue. Without the fantastic support of many Maleny businesses and volunteers from various groups this event would not be the success it is. Prostate Cancer Foundation Queensland has been the recipient of close to $80,000 over the past six years. On behalf of the organising committee I wish to say congratulations to the team on a great effort and thanks to the community for your support. Lynda Burgess Muscle on the Mountain

Bookish celebration

The venues of the Maleny Celebration of Books, Maleny I attended were enjoyable and well run, presumably because of thorough preparation. The attendance at Poetry on the Precinct suggests an auditorium could be useful on the Precinct. With individual bookshops being threatened by people shopping at Amazon, etc, it is pleasing to see such strong local support for authors and reading. With today’s globalisation and multinational proliferation perhaps there is a push back by some people to engage with community and local affairs. The bottom line isn’t always the most important thing. Ian Pollock Witta

Property values and towers

Richard Giles is back (GC&M News, July 19) with more misinformation about the effect of towers on property values. Previously I showed (GC&M News, January 18) that a study Giles cited found that 80% of buyers would not care about nearby towers. In actual fact, many buyers would welcome it and even pay more for proximity to a tower because of the better access speeds. Giles's study found that for those who objected to the towers, the most common reasons given were health reasons (for which there is absolutely no credible scientific evidence) and that it "obstructed their views" somewhat. Hardly good reasons for rejecting modern technology! Studies commissioned by NZ Telecom showed that property prices were "not statistically significantly affected by the presence of towers". The reality is that homeowners would see house price gains through proximity to a tower and its 26

attendant access to high speed internet (vital for work-from-home professionals, businesses, and entertainment/education users). Lastly, Giles bemoans that the NBN has “bumbled along” for three years here in Maleny. Well, of course it has, largely thanks to the opposition of people like Giles! Without this wrongheaded stonewalling, we'd all have NBN access already. Gerry Muller Maleny

Property development

The problem Sunshine Coast Council residents have with certain types of development is that we are unaware of applications lodged with council. The first we know of property developments is when we actually see action occurring on site, which by then is too late, as council has already deemed it “Code Assessable” and approved the application, or the application does not comply with council’s code and is deemed ‘Impact Assessable’, in which case the applicants must advertise their proposal publicly, etc, and council will accept objections by the public to the application. Naturally developers do not wish their applications to be subject to public objections, so in the main, keep them ‘Code Assessable’ and out of our sight. Currently the only way for us to check on applications lodged is to individually contact council and request details, which is time consuming for both parties. Council does not provide this information as part of its services. Why, I do not know, as it would be relatively simple to put this information on their website on, say, a weekly basis. We do not need all the application info, only the date lodged, the address of the proposed development and council’s application number – we can then go on line and keep ourselves informed. Problem solved! So councillors, how about having this done for your constituents? J.T. Weeks Beerwah

Rates notice arrival

We have just received our rates bill. My wife and I are aged pensioners and consequently are entitled to the State Government Pension Concession and the Sunshine Coast Council Pension Concession. In spite of these concessions our rates bill is up 4.74% on last year. The inflation rate is about 1.5%. The increase of $15 in the Transport Levy is going into the Transport Futures Fund focussing on Light Rail. The fund states that in Stages 3 and onwards it may connect Beerwah to the main centres of Caloundra and Maroochydore in 2025, which is not beneficial to those of us who live in places like Glass House Mountains. Keith Pennell Glass House Mountains

Footpaths are transport aren’t they?

Can we use our Transport Levy funds to provide a footpath? There is no continuous path from Glass House to Beerwah. On a fine day, when the grass is mowed it may not be too bad, school children are often seen walking on the side of Steve Irwin Way to and from school. Near Tobacco Street, imagine the family seen walking with a pram and toddlers at the side of Steve Irwin Way to Beerwah where there is no footpath with knee high grass and in the mud. Also seen was a group of tourists, about six to 10, walking on Old Gympie Road to Beerwah, where there is not even a pretence of a footpath. It would nice to have the choice to walk safely to Beerwah. Name supplied Beerwah

Jam Jars In The Garden

(The demise of country town banks) There’ll be jam jars in the garden Full of five and twenty notes; ‘Cause the banks have now abandoned us And got us by the throat. They don’t want our generation, Our expiry date is nigh; But we’re being old and stubborn, And won’t lie down and die. They say that only one in five Now totter through their doors; But I’ve done a count in Maple Street, And it’s actually much more. The banks have really jumped the gun, If they’d only wait a decade; We’d be nice and gently cark it, And then they’d have it made. But unless we’re electronic, Computerized and smart; The banks don’t want to know us, They’ve proved they’ve got no heart. In days of yore when times were bad And banks ran out of trust; People hid their money In case the banks went bust. They hid it in a jam jar Or in a smelly sock; So I’ll plant ours …. in the garden ‘Neath the ornamental rocks. I guess I’ll need a map or two, And our kids will have to dig; ‘Cause by the time we toddle off The hole might be quite big. There’ll be midden heaps and mullock piles, In everyone’s back yard; And to ANZ and Suncorp, You’re making life too hard. ‘Twill serve you right if you go broke, For ignoring country towns; You’re a ship without a rudder, And I hope you run aground. And the teller girls are lovely And we’ve formed a great rapport And I’m really devastated That too – is out the door. Lisa Plucknett, Maleny (Old but not out)

Reclaim your weekend!

As winter winds up, grass cutting season will soon begin, and this is the time of year that many people consider upgrading their mowers. It is always worth considering the size of your garden or land when considering a new mower purchase. For larger lawns the John Deere range of ride on mowers consistently offers exceptional results. As well as stocking a massive range of all the top selling brands, Sunshine Coast Mowers are the Coast’s John Deere specialists offering a huge range of one of the world’s most trusted brands. Built on reliability, performance and comfort, it is easy to see why John Deere are market leaders. James Hollands from Sunshine Coast Mowers is highly impressed with the advantages that the ‘Zero Turn’ range of ride on mowers offers his customers and in particular he recommends the new John Deere Z335E model. “These machines are incredible!” he said. “They really cut mowing time down significantly and you can get great results quickly. It means more time to enjoy your weekend or time off!” The Z335E offers unmatched quality, performance, and comfort along with exceptional maneuverability and trimming capability. With a 20HP full-pressure engine and a newly engineered 42 inch Accel Deep mower deck, these machines power along with an 11 kilometer per hour mowing speed. The new Accel Deep mower deck has a single-piece stamped steel shell specially shaped to maximise airflow. At faster speeds, this deck produces optimal cut quality and the unique 12 centimetre deep shell which extends all the way around has been designed to maximise airflow to lift grass up for the most level cut possible. In theGarden Jobs for the yard in August What’s on for gardeners in August • •

It’s a good time to fertilise and prune hibiscus so they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer. If you have a veggie garden, don’t forget to water it once or twice a week. Although it’s cooler, the drier winter winds will drain the moisture from the soil. • If you’re growing pineapples, give them a side dressing of complete fertiliser in late August. They like acid soils, so avoid using lime or dolomite. • Spray the flowers of your mango tree with a copper-based spray to fight anthracnose disease. • Plant your new roses now. Bagged and bare-rooted roses are in plentiful supply. • Fertilise your existing rose bushes by mulching around them with cow manure. • Watch for aphids attacking new growth on rose bushes. Squash them, hose them off or spray them. • Keep your strawberries fruiting with a fortnightly feed of fish and seaweed solutions. • Apply a light application of a lawn fertiliser to give your lawns a small boost into spring. Vegetables Plant carrot, lettuce, radish, beetroot, capsicum, celery, cucumber, eggplant, beans, pumpkin, silverbeet, spring onion, choko, squash, sweet potato, tomato, zucchini, broccoli, asian vegetables, cabbage, peas, spinach, coriander, rocket and turnips. Flowers Plant marigold, petunia, calendula, bedding begonia, californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, gaillardia, gazania, gerbera, kangaroo paw, phlox, portulaca, snapdragon, zinnia, amaranthus, salvia and statice.

Plant of the month

M.R.W.L. We care about our environment

Cabbage Palm Livistona australis This magnificent tree is the most common native palm species of the east coast of Australia, and interestingly it is the one after which the Palm Island group was named by Captain Cook in 1770. Reaching around 25m, the Cabbage Palm is relatively slow-growing and can provide a striking architectural feature to gardens. This palm is hugely adaptable and will grow in most local soil, aspect and locality conditions and flowers/fruits all year. Cabbage Palms have several uses. The young unfolded leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. The young and tender leaves are eaten like cabbages. The leaves are used for thatching and making hats. They are large and fibrous and can also be used for making baskets, bags, nets, etc. Seeking protection from the sun, early European settlers in Australia used fibre from the native palm to create the cabbage tree hat, a distinctive form of headwear during the colonial era. Being highly adaptable in its growing needs and providing habitat and food for native animals, the Cabbage Palm is a beautiful native tree in any setting.

How to ensure your rainwater tank provides pristine water Clean, healthy water is our most precious resource. When we are reliant on catching our own rainwater, every drop counts. But do we need to compromise water quality and the health of our families to conserve water? Absolutely not, according to the team at Pristine Water Systems. Rainwater quality is affected as soon as it hits our roof. Water passes through guttering, pipes, tanks, filters and taps before we drink, prepare food and wash in it. There are potential contaminants at every stage. It is therefore vital to plan and maintain the system as a whole. This includes maintaining the cleanliness of your catchment, i.e. roof, gutters and pipework, as well as maintaining the cleanliness of your tank. A water filtration system should be installed and the filters replaced regularly to prevent bacteria build up. Filtration is part of the bacteria-control process, and a full range of options is available for consideration. Pristine Water Systems has developed a unique process called QuadClean that leaves your tank water totally cleansed, sanitized, aerated and invigorated, wasting very little water in doing so. This process involves testing the water; vacuuming off sediment and sludge; filtering the water and using an oxygenating process to kill harmful bacteria. Hazardous matter found in tanks can include organic sludge, silt and ash, animal droppings and even decaying carcasses. Parasites (Giardia), Bacteria (E.Coli, Cryptosporidium) and insect larvae (mosquitoes, sandflies) can be present, potentially causing illness to family members and visitors.

Simon Lacey (left) and Allen Pitcher (right) Two friendly local operators manage the Hinterland and surrounding areas. Simon Lacey services the Glass House Mountains area and covers the region from Caloundra to Kilcoy. Allen Pitcher services Glenview and Landsborough up to Maleny and the Hinterland. It makes sense to clean your tanks now whilst they have plenty of water in them rather than wait until levels are low. Incoming water from the first storms of the season will stir up the settled sludge on the bottom of your tank contaminating your fresh rainwater. Some home owners have had complaints after a water delivery that the

water delivered was contaminated. This is not generally the case at all. Water suppliers are not going to risk their livelihood by delivering substandard water. The contamination occurs when the inflow of water disturbs the settled sludge on the bottom of the tank. Cleaning and sanitizing your tank now will prevent these problems occurring later in the year. For more information about ensuring your access to pristine water, call Simon on 0411 774 767 or Allen on 0404 302 723. See www.pristinewater.com.au for more information. Business feature

Noticeboard Great prizes in the multi-draw raffle The Beerwah Charity Sports Day's major raffle features six main prizes. These are: a large wheelbarrow filled with all sorts of products, a Honda whipper snipper, an Echo powered garden implement, a child’s bicycle, a large carton of pantry ware and a $100 voucher from Savage Landscapes. The holder of the ticket drawn first will have first choice of these six items, the holder of the second draw a choice of five, and so on. So there are six chances to win a prize, all on the one ticket. Tickets are only $2 and are already being sold around the district. Additionally there will be a stall outside Woolworths and IGA for the next four Fridays and Saturdays. And naturally tickets will be on sale at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday August 26, where the raffle will be drawn during the afternoon. Check us out on Facebook at Beerwah Charity Sports Day. All the proceeds of this event go to Cancer Council Queensland. The Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch club operates on Friday nights with the bar opening at 5pm. Meals can be ordered from 6pm to 7.30pm. The menu alternates every second Friday and will be either barbeque and salad or roast of the day with vegetables. Please come along and why not bring a friend? Dance at Glass House - A dance will be held at the Glass House Mountains Community Hall on Saturday, August 5 from 7.30pm to 11.30pm. NV/OT/M. From the churches Being Number 1 In this world we live in, the call goes out to be Number 1 in whatever we do. The whole idea is to get ahead, whether it is by the clothes we wear, drive the right car or whatever; so we can feel on top. The thinking is that if you want to be a ‘somebody’, you have to make something of yourself as nobody else will do it for you. Blow your own trumpet and by all means, do to others before they do it to you. ‘Me first’ could easily describe this modern thinking. So one would surmise that everybody would be interested in what Jesus had to say. If anybody wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all. (Mark 9:35) But it’s the rest of what Jesus has to say that goes against our grain, “…he must be the very last, and the servant of all”. Jesus didn’t just talk about it, he did it. He came out Number 1, but first he finished last in the world’s eyes – dead last. That day at Calvary after Christ died, soldiers stuck a spear in his side and out came

supper, Monte Carlo raffle and lucky door prize. Great atmosphere, all welcome. Proceeds to the community hall fund. Enquiries to Aileen on 5496 9349. U3A Sunshine Coast welcomes members to Sarah Seeberg’s talk on Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is an island nation south of India in the Indian Ocean. The talk is on Tuesday August 1 at 9.30am at the Masonic Lodge Hall, Tamarind Street, Maleny. For details, phone Yvonne 0404 466 372. Support for carers Are you a family or friend carer? Do you provide unpaid support to someone who has a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail aged? If so, come along to a presentation by Carers Queensland Sunshine Coast Team Leader Kath Kelly to hear about what support is available to you. All welcome to attend the meeting on Friday August 4 from 10am to 11.30am at the Beerwah Library meeting room, 25 Peachester Road, Beerwah. RSVP by calling Carers Queensland on 5451 1882. Messy Church meets on the first Sunday of each month at St George's Anglican Church, 2 Walkers Drive, Maleny, from 3.45pm until 6pm. The theme for the next event on Sunday August 6 will be ‘The Soldiers Faith’. Please join them for storytelling, creative craft, an obstacle course and a shared evening meal. The cost is $2 per person to assist with craft and food resources. People of all ages are invited to join us (but children must be accompanied by an adult). For further information please contact June on 5435 2941.

Mooloolah Public Hall, as part of the Festival of Community Halls and the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast, is hosting an exhibition focusing on local groups and what they have offered this community over the past 50 years. The idea behind the event is to bring both the Mooloolah hall and local groups to the attention of our community. The exhibition is set for Friday and Saturday, August 4 and 5, from 9am to 4pm. Palmwoods Arts & Crafts Group is presenting their 2017 Craftfest & Exhibition, ‘See Beyond the Sea’, this Saturday, July 29, from 9am to 4pm at the Palmwoods Bowls Club, 1 Nicklin Road, Palmwoods. Entry is by gold coin donation. There will also be an extensive range of quality craft work available for purchase, as well as hourly raffles and a lucky door prize. Devonshire Teas and lunches will be available. Credit card facilities are not available for purchases from the Craft Group, but an ATM is available in the Bowls Club. Proceeds of the day go to support the local Cittamani Hospice Service in Palmwoods. For more information contact Jan on 5441 3764 or Karyll on 5442 1757.

Jill Schefe Glasshouse Country Lutheran Church blood and water, the sign of death. But it was life for us – life in all its fullness for all who trust in him, instead of the death that comes naturally in this world. All for one reason: Jesus Christ was last of all and servant of all. That’s what continues in the church. Today the Lord Jesus goes on being the servant of all, serving us through His Word, Baptism and Holy Communion. Here our heavenly waiter gives us a taste of His blessings which will be eternally ours, life out of His death – forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting through faith. Jesus remains the servant of all in his holy church; behind every sermon preached, every Baptism and every Supper administered in His name, Jesus our Number One, gives us his very life in our world.

The Queensland Government has introduced new laws to promote the responsible breeding of dogs. These new laws relate to dogs and puppies born after May 26, 2017. After this date, it is illegal to sell, supply, give away or advertise a dog or puppy without providing a ‘supply number’, which is used to identify where the animal has originated from. Advertising for the sale, supply or giving away of a dog or puppy born after May 26, 2017 will not be accepted by Glasshouse Country & Maleny News without a supply number. To find out more go to www.daf.qld.gov.au and search for ‘dog breeder regulation’.

Sport The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Neil Lovett Our club had a victory over friendly neighbours Nambour in the recent Lochwood Shield match, winning 2-1. In the first singles Vince Carbery was in sparkling form, defeating Nambour’s Theo Kleiberg 26-19. In the other singles the visitor, Cliff Heidenreich returned the compliment, pegging out against Nick Cram to win 26-9. In the doubles our pair of Donna Manning and Ken Barker scraped home, beating Theo and Cliff 17-16. Ken played in the recent Gibson Medal contest at Noosa, and while he did not win the tournament he had three wins and three losses. He lost to Greg Whymark (the Medal winner) and Mike Bertram (twice), but beat Cath Colclough (a prize winner), Cynthia Tacey and Deidre Hardy. Most of Ken’s opponents have played for Queensland. In club games on Sunday Kath Smith beat Sarah Widin and Bev Sockhill 18-6 and Nick won a keenly fought game against Vince 26-19. Thursday brought a handicap doubles game pitting Frances Harper and Donna against Neil Lovett and Vince. The women prevailed, 14-10. We are entering the period of the annual club championships and results will be announced over the next few weeks. Coaching sessions are held on Saturday mornings at our lawns in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road, with mallets, balls and other equipment provided by the club for people wishing to have a try at this fascinating game. For information about joining, coaching, hiring or playing times, ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Maleny hosts State Cross Country Finals Up to 400 runners aged from under eight to over 70 will converge on the picturesque Maleny Golf Club and Community Precinct this Saturday (July 29) for the Queensland Cross Country Championships, over distances from 1km to 10km. The popular spectator-friendly Maleny course has been a feature of the Sunshine Coast Cross Country Series for the last few years, and this is the second year in a row that the Queensland Championships have been held there, paving the way for Queensland Athletics to select it as the venue for the National Championships in 2018. This is exciting news not just for Maleny but the Hinterland, as Qld Athletics said the Nationals will be bringing 1200 competitors and up to 4000 spectators to the Range over the 3 day event in 2018. World Cross Country Champion and Queensland Athletics Manager, Recreational Running Services and Programs, Benita Willis said the undulating course reminded her of some tough circuits in Europe. Benita is arguably the greatest Australian female distance runner. The 38-year-

old Queenslander holds the female national record for the marathon, 10,000m, 5,000m, 3,000m and 2,000m and has represented Australia at the Olympic Games on four occasions. In true Maleny style, the event is well supported by community groups working with Queensland Athletics and Sunshine Coast Council to ensure the smooth running of this great sporting event. Maleny Golf Club President Dr Max Whitten said there would be a cost to the golf club because Saturday was the busiest day in the golfing week. “However, we are very keen to embrace such opportunities which broaden community access to this beautiful tract of open space,” Dr Whitten said. Maleny Golf Club, Rotary Club of Maleny, Maleny Little Athletics, Friends of Pattemore House and Maleny District Sport and Rec Club are all involved. It's a top spectator venue, and the weather is predicted to be superb, so here’s your chance to see some of Qld's best cross country runners in action. Races start from Maleny Golf Club at 1.00 pm, 15, Porters Lane North Maleny, with plenty of parking, food and coffee too.

Witta Tennis

Contributed by Pauline Fraley A blustery windy day for tennis in Nambour. In spite of the valiant efforts of Witta Wagtails, Nambour Heights were the winners of the day. Thanks to Gerry, Suzie, Eunice and Sonia. The Whistlers played at Maroochydore against the Meteors. Good games and long rallies as usual. All sets were close with lots of deuces, but we couldn't win the points at the right time. Score was 2741 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Brenda Warner, Maree Hooley, Aki Lepper and Donna Kuskopf. The Wildcats were at home against Nambas No Faults. It was close all day with lots of good rallies. Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby held strong and pulled away in the second half. Final score was 6-2 sets, 41-30 games. Great win guys! On the weekend in beautiful weather for tennis, the Witta Wompoos travelled to Nambour to take on the local No Worries team. Nail biting stuff from beginning to end including 5 tie breaker sets. But the Wompoos came home with a wet sail (taking 4 of the last 5 sets) and finally ran out winners by 7 sets to 5. A really solid team performance with everyone pitching in on the day. In lovely playing conditions and with substitute players on both sides, Witta Wikings got home over Murgon Monsters 8 sets to 4 in a score line that did not reflect the closeness of play.

Super Strawberry Report Thanks to growers who saw potential in their fruit this week, we can report winners of both categories in Round 3. The biggest entry, weighing 70 grams, was submitted by Stanley River Plantation, and the most unusual (double strawberry) was entered by Jade King of Green Valley Agriculture. Congratulations to both growers. Round 4 closes at 4pm this Friday, July 28, but you can bring any likely contenders in to the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers’ Co-op any day during the week. Tom is acting

as steward at present, and he will weigh and record your entries. There are eight weekly rounds in the annual Super Strawberry Competition, so this week marks the half-way point. The rounds have been very quiet to date, so let’s hope for some more serious competition from now on. Thanks to Co-op staff and the Beerwah Hotel for supporting this novelty competition leading up the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival, an annual fund-raiser for Cancer Council Queensland. The 2017 champions will be announced at the sports day on Saturday August 26.

We had 13 players who all had a great tussle with winners being Ian Chatterton, Matt Fulton, Ray Pantlin, and Don Ginns. Congratulations to the winners and remember, Doug will catch up with you and your handicap, until then enjoy. Members draw - no winners present. Money Board was won by Jane Burgess, congratulations. See you all next week as more folks return from holidays to join in the Friday afternoon fun. Talking about fun, something new at Maleny Bowls Club – our first Saturday of bowls as a social gathering was had in brilliant sunshine, this is an excellent concept hope everyone supports it. Great to have both our current 2017 singles champions give it a big tick of approval. See you all next Saturday afternoon. Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 Last weekend saw the New Moon in your sign, with Mars, your ruler, making this a very powerful week for you. There is an element about travel, or education. Start a detailed informed plan to stay fit and healthy. Be the leader everybody wants to follow! Take command with elegance, confidence, courage and pride. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 It’s time for you to do a detailed approach regarding any benefits to your children or creative action with your partner. When it comes to upcoming entertainments, planning is half the fun. Work progresses smoothly, aided by cooperation if you need it. Make improvements regarding home, appearance or health. Keep a good diet. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 Moods might be changeable and with Mercury entering the sign of Virgo, your conscious attention will be brought to home affairs, and perhaps home security systems. With the weekend coming there is great joy and recreation to be found. Look to lovely afternoons with a charming companion or someone exciting who thinks you are lovely. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Major shopping could be on your agenda. If so, as the planets bring Mars into action, it sees you team up with someone to go after what you want. A constructive home project can be aided by planetary influences this week, as can teamwork with others. You may have a budget which imposes restrictions, but an unexpected opportunity arrives.

Week Beginning 26/07/17

with Edgar J. Winter www.astroclairvoyant.com

LEO July 23 - August 22 There may be a lot of interest around your finances and your taxation returns with the Moon in Virgo and Mercury also entering that sign. So, this week you may analyse everything, but just don’t be impulsive on any big decision. You have the courage and confidence to take charge and you might see everything fall into place by the weekend. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 You may be in one of your critical moods but don’t focus verbally on others, what you need now is a task on which to focus all that nervous energy! As the week progresses, you will probably be inclined to keep a low profile. That will allow you to get a great deal accomplished. The weekend is a good time for the nitty gritty of personal accounts. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Relationships may have some tough lessons as this week may include some issues with separation and others with recommitment. See if you can find a skilled mediation person to inspire resolution to bring you happily back to those who you love. With the Moon coming into your sign at the weekend it makes you want to have things go your own way. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 There seems to be no stopping you where your career and goals are concerned. Await each day this week with the urge to see those things that responsibilities are made for and you should consider benefits also that come from taking a break from too heavy a responsibility. You may opt for a quiet rendezvous in a secluded spot for romance.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 This is a week for confidence, command and courage to propel you forward on an adventure for a marathon, major sport, or pursuit of a life goal. The energies are purely outdoors, so don’t stay at home. Also avoid negative attitudes as that may set the tone wrongly for the whole day. Considerable exciting vibes continue throughout the weekend. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 You have the go ahead now, if you have been looking for approval from a collaborator with regard to your finances. It would be wise to make any kind of computer back-ups or print out invoices or financial returns that are needed for filing. Some anxiety is due to a financial worry, but you have faced this frustration before. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 For some this week there is a need for a recommitment to old relationships and to know just what is needed to save the day. Towards the weekend commanding leadership comes from you or a partner. Take charge with confidence, but wait till Friday for the Libran Moon to move into favourable reactions. Avoid jealousy or control issues over the weekend. PISCES February 20 - March 20 This is a good week to focus on ways to improve your financial prospects. Patience will always come in handy, so relax if there are any delays. It would be preferable not to jump at the first suggestion for any weekend plans, just hold out for the chances that will come with better options provided. It is always a good time to plan for the best vacation.

A guy is sitting at home when he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door and sees a snail on the porch. He picks up the snail and throws it as far as he can. Three years later there’s a knock on the door. He opens it and sees the same snail. The snail says: “What the hell was that all about?” Contributed by Shaun Fitton, Elimbah
