Hi Everyone

ast week Sarah and I headed along to the Caloundra Events Centre to grab some photos of the Beerwah State High School students arriving at their formal. As we parked the car, two really glamorous sequin clad girls stepped out of the vehicle next to us, they looked like models ready to walk the red carpet at the Academy Awards (see photo top of cover). And while this isn’t the first year we have taken photos at this endof-year event, you kind of forget what really great fun it is seeing the students dress up and witnessing first-hand how excited both the

students and their families are. However what never ceases to amaze me is the transformation that takes place from seeing the students in their school uniforms to seeing them turn into such dazzling creatures. So when Sarah returned later in the week from the Clap Out with her photos and I chose one of two very teary looking school girls in their uniforms for the front cover, it made me laugh when I recognised them as the two sequin clad girls who arrived when we did at the formal. I hope Letitia and Haley, along with all the other graduating students, enjoyed their last week of high school and we look forward to hearing plenty of great stories about their future success. It's time for action at the Glass House intersection By Greg Brown

Anyone using the Steve Irwin Way – Reed Street intersection at Glass House Mountains will know how treacherous it can be. The intersection services all local traffic in and out of the Glass House township and the growing residential areas, school and childcare drop-off and pick up traffic, a considerable number of trucks from the local quarry and other industries, commercial delivery vehicles, and tourists and travellers with caravans. Team this with the ever increasing amount of traffic using Steve Irwin Way, and it is plainly obvious that the intersection has outgrown the old-style ‘stop and giveway’ approach. The slight incline in the road at the intersection means that trucks take longer to manoeuvre into Steve Irwin Way. Visual problems exist if you are looking to turn left from Glass House. And exiting from Jeffreys Road straight across into Reed Street can be terrifying. With the State Government elections in early 2015, Glass House Mountains businessman Kel McNamara is calling for action on a local road black-spot … before it’s too late. “The danger posed by the intersection has been identified over and over again, and the time has

come for the procrastination to stop,” said Kel. “Everyone agrees that the intersection needs traffic lights, just like what has happened at Landsborough. “And we need a firm, definite assurance to be made by our local State Member, Andrew Powell that it will happen, and soon, before a local family has to suffer through a tragedy,” he said. “Andrew has stated in the past that the intersection is his number one road priority, but unfortunately he has yet to come forward with a firm plan. “He has made pledges that he will try to make it happen, giving cautious qualifications around budgets and priority listings, but I think the community would now expect Andrew to actually make it happen. “The local community want to see Andrew say ‘yes it will happen and I will make it happen by this date’ otherwise it’s just more hot air promises,” said Kel. I would like to see everyone who believes the intersection must be upgraded to send Andrew an email to Glass.House@parliament.qld.gov. au – let him know what you expect and make sure you include your name and address for verification and response purposes.

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the Plan covers Maleny Showgrounds, Witta Sportsground and the sport and recreation uses across the Maleny Community Precinct. “The Plan will determine current usage and the most appropriate type and level of future recreation facilities and infrastructure at these venues over the next 15 years,” Cr McKay said. “We want to ensure the project will be consistent with community demand and needs of clubs and organisations within the Maleny locality and the wider region. “The study will explore the current and future needs of the Maleny Showgrounds and Witta Sportsground and what role the Maleny Community Precinct can play to service future gaps.” Leisure planning and management consultants, the Strategic Leisure Group, have been engaged to assist Council in undertaking this study. Cr McKay said a comprehensive community engagement approach will be undertaken to ensure residents and stakeholder groups have ample opportunity to express their views throughout the project. “This will include face to face meetings with site user groups, lessees, landowners and other stakeholders, surveys of clubs and schools, and design workshops that will be open to community

members,” Cr McKay said. “You can discuss the project with council representatives and the Strategic Leisure Group on Saturday, December 6 from 10.00am to 2.00pm at the Maleny IGA. This will give residents an opportunity to share their thoughts about the recreation and sporting needs at Maleny Showgrounds, Witta Sportsground or Maleny Community Precinct. “It is important to note council has not made a commitment to fund all recommendations from the Maleny Recreation Master Plan. Its implementation will require external funding assistance. “It is vital to have a well-researched plan in place to ensure council is aware of Maleny’s needs and take advantage of funding opportunities as they arise. “This is an important project for Maleny and we look forward to hearing from residents.” Community feedback will continue throughout the master planning process and will close when the Plan is endorsed by council. What will development of Halls Creek mean to us? by Greg Brown

Q. Who wants Halls Creek developed? A. It isn’t Council who is supporting it. Their long considered position is that the long-term future urban growth should be based around the existing Glasshouse Country townships (the so-called Beerwah East option), rather than a new mega-city adjacent to Pumicestone Passage (Halls Creek). Council want Halls Creek excluded from any future intensive urban development. The State Government are insisting that the location remain open in our longer term plans as an urban expansion area. Q. Why does Stockland believe it has the best option for the future? A. As the developers who own Halls Creek – they are pushing their barrow hard. Why wouldn’t they? It’s a billion dollar money spinner for them. But does all their spruiking about environmental safeguards, sustainable planning and the like, really come into the equation? If the development happens, Stockland may not still own the site – they may very well not even be in existence – so anything they say about what they will or won’t do, needs to be taken out of the argument. Q. What are the issues for local residents? There are many issues for and against the Halls Creek and the Beerwah East options, and the facts and rhetoric can be confusing. But when it comes down to it, what exactly what do we want in the future? 1. Do we want a prosperous and sustainable future for our local towns? 2. Do we want improved public transport into this side of the highway?

3. Do we want the CAMCOS transport connection, connecting us to the Coast? Q. How will it impact on us having a prosperous and sustainable future? A. We hear so much about the importance of ‘shop local’ and supporting our local business scene to keep it vibrant and thriving. The reality is that to keep local businesses flourishing, not only do we need to shop locally, but the local region needs to grow to attract and support new businesses. It’s not very likely that we would be able to attract any new major traders along the lines of Target and all the new specialty shops at Beerwah, if there was a new large urban (and retail) development proposed to go ahead on our doorstep, as would be the case with Halls Creek. Why would a major business set up here if there was a nice shiny new development 15 minutes away with plans for 35,000 residents? Q. How will it impact on our public transport? A. The development of Halls Creek with the large population it will house, will see future major roads, light rail, bus and other only dreamed of transportation infrastructure focused in that area, leaving our towns wanting much-needed improvements in transport. Q. What about CAMCOS? A. It is the planned rail link between Beerwah and the Coast passing through the soon-tocommence Caloundra South development. You can forget that promised transport connection if Halls Creek gets the nod. But the Beerwah East option gives the CAMCOS

link the stable population base to support it going ahead. Q. What do other stakeholder groups say? Sunshine Coast Council says ‘No’, Most Sunshine Coast Residents and Ratepayers Associations say ‘No’, Landsborough Area Community Association says ‘No’, Take Action for Pumicestone Passage says ‘No’, Sunshine Coast Environment Council says ‘No’, Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network says ‘No’, Mooloolah Waterwatch and Landcare Group says ‘No’, and many local residents have already said ‘No’. So what are you going to say? At least with the Beerwah East option, the resulting new developments are locally based, supporting local families and businesses, creating local jobs, developing local prosperity and making our region relevant to local and state government decision makers. If you want to say ‘No’ – you just have to sign the letter on page 35 of this week’s edition and either post it to your local MP or drop it into one of the shops listed on the letter and it’ll be posted for you. The more people that take that simple step, the more Andrew Powell and Mark McArdle will know how strongly we feel about it. If you stay silent, then the politicians can only interpret that as that you support the development of Halls Creek. So speak up now or forever hold your peace.

Mt Tibrogargan summit route reopens The summit route on the western face of Mt Tibrogargan in Glass House Mountains National Park reopened on Thursday, November 20, after Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) removed loose rock along the trail to improve safety. National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said QPWS had identified ongoing risks to users of the route and had advised it was for experienced, fit and well-equipped climbers. It’s also best attempted in the cooler months. “The route to the top of this iconic peak was initially closed in February 2014, due to a wildfire that burnt the whole mountain in late January 2014,” Mr Dickson said. “The fire burnt significant amounts of vegetation and destabilised rock, making the route hazardous. “QPWS closed the summit route due to a heightened risk of natural rock fall, and a greater risk of climbers dislodging rock that could hit people below them and cause serious injury or death.” Mr Dickson said that over the past month QPWS had completed works to re-open the route, including a scaling operation (removal of loose rock) involving collecting and bagging of loose rock, using helicopters to relocate the material to the base of the mountain. Installation of new signage will better inform visitors of risks and ways to improve their safety and enjoyment while climbing Mt Tibrogargan.

“QPWS is continuing works in the area, such as stabilising the approach track to the summit route,” he said. “Visitors are advised that they need to make good decisions and manage their own safety while accessing the Mt Tibrogargan summit route. “Think carefully before you attempt it. If you don’t have the skills, high level of fitness or gear for this route, there are easier alternatives in the area such as the fantastic Mt Ngungun walk that gives great views of the Glass House Mountains and the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

Funding Boost for events in Maleny

New funding will be provided for the Maleny Wood Expo and the Real Food Festival in 2015. The Wood Expo which will be held on May 2 and 3 will receive $25,000.00 and the Real Food Festival to be held on September 12 and 13 will receive $33,300.00 from Events Queensland. The funding comes from their Regional Development Program (RDP) which is provided to help grow the economy and create jobs. Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey, said funding will go towards marketing activities to increase awareness of the event and destination, strategic planning, the engagement of short-term personnel, and hire of temporary infrastructure. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the program formed part of the Government’s plan to grow overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020 with regional events providing a year round tourism boost. A small study on social and emergency housing needs, in and around Maleny, is nearing completion this month. The study, a joint initiative of Maleny Rotary Club and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and funded by Maleny Rotary, is looking into what are the appropriate pathways for respite and longer-term provision for people in need? These pathways consider community characteristics, local needs, available services and desirable modelling. The last two Census data collections in Maleny (in 2006 and 2011) have highlighted that unemployment has grown; part-time work is preferred to full-time work; the average age of Maleny residents is older than in other areas; females outnumber males; and that there is a high level of unoccupied dwellings in Maleny. Like elsewhere, Maleny is affected by changing personal circumstances: ageing, declining real income and altered domestic situations (e.g. violence and family breakdown). One identified trend is a gradual increase of people in need of short and medium term

accommodation in Maleny. Some existing responses to these issues are a high level of ‘house-sitting’, improvised dwellings and sharedhouse arrangements. Data from local real estate agents suggest that private rental housing is limited and relatively expensive. The State government has plans to privatise public housing provision. The social housing sector currently has no planning for Maleny due to small local numbers on the Public Housing Register. Services for those at-risk of losing their accommodation, due to rent arrears, are confined to large centres, the closest being Nambour, Caloundra and Caboolture. Community News Gifts galore at CWA Twilight Markets CWA is hosting an Art & Craft Market just in time for Christmas, on Saturday, December 6. Receiving a community land permit from Sunshine Coast Council, the markets will extend out onto the newly landscaped area to the south of the hall. With up to 30 stall holders, a bouncy castle, sausage sizzle, food stalls, visit from Santa, kids craft, free Christmas photos from 3.00pm to 6.00pm, followed by carols at 6.00pm. Thanks go to Westpac Bank for supporting the costs of Santa's Grotto. CWA Market Coordinator Debbie said the Beerwah community had embraced their small Art & Craft markets wonderfully, with a steady and continual growth since they started in 2012. Our guest speaker at the Glasshouse Country View Club’s November luncheon was Edgar Winter who is a local astrologer living at Woombye. He also writes the ‘Your Stars’ column in Glasshouse Country News. It was an enlightening and humorous talk about how the universe controls our pathway in our lives. He mentioned the various star signs and what traits they had to take on the positions of President, Secretary etc which interested the ladies. Some ladies were hesitant to put up their hands in case they were nominated for a position on Heather Burton presents Gillian Winton with her the Committee. He was very passionate member’s badge about his topic and certainly gave us some food for thought. afternoon of fun bowls once again filling the green with bowlers and non-bowlers joining together for a great cause. A few fines were happening as well as a chocolate reward for touching the ‘Jack’. We also had lots of spectators enjoying the afternoon watching the bowls, listening to the great selection of music, while having a cool drink. The club slowly filled as more arrived to join in with the raffles and auctions. Wow! What a great selection of raffle prizes which filled a two tier table across the back wall of the dining room, plus two tables full of auction items. All these prizes and auction items were donated. There are too many people to thank individually for their help and generosity however we must thank Gary Gray he did an awesome job obtaining some fantastic donations. Thanks Gary! Thank you to Club Glasshouse for hosting this event. Lastly, a big thankyou to everyone who attended the event or made donations of cash and prizes before the day. We have a great community and some fantastic extended friends. Next year it will be held on Saturday, November 7.

New pensioners are being encouraged to check if they are eligible for a Sunshine Coast Council concession on their rates. Director Corporate Services Ray Turner said Queensland Pension Card and Veteran Affairs Gold Card holders were entitled to a State Subsidy on their principal place of residence, and may also be entitled to a council concession. “Provided you have owned property in the region for the last three years or at least five out of the last 10 years, you are eligible for this reduction on your rates,” Mr Turner said. “You can complete the form as soon as you become eligible at any time throughout the year. “If you move house within the region you’ll need to reapply.” Should you feel you are eligible and wish to apply for a pensioner rate subsidy/concession you can complete a form at the council’s customer service centres at Caloundra, Maroochydore or Nambour, or at the council’s libraries. Council staff will witness your signature and take a copy of your pension card.

Treadmill challenge to raise awareness It may not have been a competition – but there were clearly some fellas who were determined not to be shown up by their wives in the recent COPD Treadmill Challenge held at Beerwah Active Physio. One in seven Australians 40 years or older have COPD, a lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic asthma, and is a leading cause of death in Australia. Beerwah Active Physio organised their treadmill challenge as a way of supporting the Lung Foundation’s World COPD Day, to raise awareness and improve early diagnosis. They encouraged patients, staff, family and friends to walk or run on the treadmill all day in 15 minute sessions for a gold coin donation. The aim was to cover as many kilometres and raise as much money as possible, supporters who didn’t want to jump on the treadmill, were also encouraged to donate. The team managed to motivate 17 clients and six staff members to take their turn on the treadmill, raising $300.30 and walking 38.6 kms. All donations will support the Lung Foundation to promote targeted screening campaigns, and early diagnosis, as well as providing advocacy, education and support for all those affected by lung disease. It will also promote good lung health and raise awareness of the impact and symptoms of lung disease and sponsor medical and scientific research into lung disease. While there is no current cure, there is strong medical evidence to show an early diagnosis, combined with self-management strategies such as exercise and education programs at the early stages of the disease can reduce the burden of COPD. Contributed by Trevor Taylor At the Glasshouse Mountains Rotary Club meeting recently, they had a very interesting guest speaker discussing the government exam, the NAPLAN Test, and many other things to do with the wonderful Christian College in Beerwah. Mike Curtis, the Principal of the School was the guest speaker. It is interesting and amazing, how this school has grown in the last 10 years, with many more students to come in next year as well. It seems that the government exam has a few challenges to it in some ways, but it is a very good thing in many other ways. Possibly the biggest challenge is the fact that the results are advertised for all over Australia, and sometimes there is a big difference in the schools compared. Most interesting to the members of the Rotary Club was the fact that the school is doing so well, and, of course, so is Beerwah High School, so they are both growing rapidly! A successful Interact Club is going well at the Beerwah High, and a similar club in the Christian College would be a big advantage to the young people in the area.

Mason’s fundraising for local charities

The Landsborough Masonic Lodge will hold a fundraising Golf Day at Beerwah Golf Club on Sunday, December 14. The day will commence at 10.00am and take the form of a ‘Two-Man Ambrose’ played over 9 holes. The cost for players is $35.00 which includes lunch or $15.00 for those wishing to take part in lunch only. There will be novelty prizes; the drawing of the annual raffle and the presentation of the ‘Golden Sausage’ which is the result of the sausage sizzle team who raised the most money over the year at the fortnightly sausage sizzle at the Recycling Centre, Beerwah. This is a team stroke event usually played by a group of four, but can be any number. Each player plays a tee shot at each hole. The Captain then selects the best drive, which is then played by its owner. The other members retrieve their balls and in turn drop within one club length of the selected position and play their second shots. This procedure of selecting the best position continues until a ball is holed. When on the green, the best ball is selected and other team members place their ball within a card length of this spot and putt in rotation until the ball is holed.

Sixty riders roared up to the school arriving at around 10.00am to beat the heat of that weekend’s extreme heat wave. They we're amply revived with ice cold refreshments, tea/coffee and a feast of home baked treats, seasonal fruit and freshly made sandwiches all for $7.00. The club riders are regular supporters of Peachester School P&C fundraisers and would highly recommend Peachester School as a scheduled stop off for any auto / bike club planning to drive the hinterland. A treasure trove of collectables, unique, upcycled and interesting items

A new vintage, retro, collectable and upcycled store has just opened in Beerwah. The family run space on the corner of Swan Street and Beerwah Parade is set up like an emporium with three family businesses co-existing under the one roof. The co-op shop contains The Attic, The Witches Inn and Deadly Dezigns. The Attic is a treasure trove of revamped and upcycled furniture as well as interesting and unusual items along with retro pieces, collectables, crockery and knick knacks. The Witches Inn has relocated to the store from their nearby premises and Deadly Dezigns is a full sign making service that includes promotional items such as stubby coolers and shirts, hand crafted decorative signs (perfect for the man cave), vehicle and boat signage. The Attic is run by long-term locals Denis, Dawn and Kylie whose customers may know from successfully running the Beerwah fishing and tackle shop for eight years.

All three are long term collectors with a knack for upcycling and doing things up. When the collection became too much to keep in the house, the decision was made to expand the interest into a full scale business. The beauty of upcycling is that items can be reinvigorated and reinvented â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sometimes with a quirky or interesting spin. The Witches Inn is owned by daughter Kylie and provides pagan supplies and services. Kylie herself is a Pagan minister and the space features a mix of new, old and handmade items all pagan / goddess orientated. There is a wealth of Pagan paraphernalia including altar tiles, candles, hand crafted spells and potions, statues, crystal balls and locally crafted athames. They stock a range of Anne Stokes gothic items, Himalayan salt lamps and pipes and there is a wide selection of handmade ritual items. Keen to support local talent, the work of local artists is also displayed. At the back of the store is a workshop where Denis runs his sign business. The Sunshine Coast Business Awards were announced recently at a celebration attended by over 600 guests at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Innovation Centre. The winners, along with two Hall of Fame recipients, were selected from over 115 finalists and received awards in individual, small and large business and special categories. Cr Rick Baberowski attended the event and was really pleased to see how many businesses in Division 1 were acknowledged as part of the awards. The Enterprise of the Year award for large business went to Beerwah based Trailers 2000, a family business that began in 1993. It is now the largest Australian trailer manufacturer of quality, fully galvanised trailers and accessories and processors of rolled formed steel. Trailers 2000 made a comeback in the awards after retiring from entering for a few years after being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001. Glenview’s Radaqua was victorious in the Export category with its seafood production systems and aquatic environment technology solutions for marine and freshwater applications. The region’s tourism businesses continued to triumph with Beerwah’s Australia Zoo being awarded the Tourism Attractions and Tourism Sustainability awards. Palmview’s Aussie World has won the Tourism-Attraction category three years running from 2011-13 and this year were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Cr Baberowski said he was especially pleased to see 'Total Microsystems' there as a first time finalist. “I know they got a lot out of the rigours of the analysis and focus on their business, and it was great to see them putting themselves up against businesses from across the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

‘Have a Break Playgroup’

The Maleny Players will be doing six performances of a fun filled Christmas show of Sleeping Beauty at the Maleny Community Centre over the weekends of December 13 and 14 and then on December 20 and 21. The show, which is suitable for the whole family, is a rollicking tale and has the usual dose of a king, his queen, the princess (aka Sleeping Beauty) sprinkled with both good and bad fairies. Added into the mix is the cook, its chicken and an army of disgusting hobgoblins. A hilarious time is guaranteed with audience participation adding to the fun. Tickets are now on sale at www.malenyplayers.org or at Maleny Visitors Centre. Ticket prices are adults $25.00, $20.00 concession, students $10.00, and children under six free. Words for the show were written by David Crewe and music by Paul Coppens. The performances will be on Saturday, December 13 at 2.30pm and 6.30pm, Sunday, December 14 2.30pm, then on Saturday, December 20 at 2.30pm and 6.30pm, and Sunday, December 21 at 2.30pm.

On November 26, our Playgroup will close for the Christmas Noel Period. We start again on February 3 next year. We will miss our mums and children very much, and as for the children graduating from Playgroup to become Preppies, we’ll have to make sure we have our tissues handy. This year has been a wonderful time with new babies, new mums and new children. We have had so many happy times with a Teddy Bears Picnic and, of course, the childrens’ birthday party celebrations. Our craft times have given the children some challenges (let alone us helpers) and lovely fun. Storytime is also a fun time but music time and singing are the best of all, apart from the play times. Morning teas are always a time of lovely eats and good manners displayed by even our smallest tots. With one or two health issues amongst our marvellous helpers, we always have help, as needed, from some in our congregation. Pastor Margaret and her husband Paul have loved being able to come along and take part with our mums and children. We have exceptional regular helpers in Play dough Ethel, Mother and Child Nurse Margie, Wonderful Doris our wheelchair Lady, Elaine our loving and energetic Leader with Rev. Keith our puzzle Emperor. Then there’s Diane who loves a chat and hands out loving Hugs to any who need them and finally Papa Kevin, who works hard, always has a smile, and is loved by the children. But when it comes to trolley time, Papa Kevin is King; the children adore helping to get the trolley of toys back to the big shed! We also want to mention helpers who come along when needed – Bronwen and John wells, Dianne and Ron Richardson, Paia Ingram and Eric Hannay – take a bow you terrific people! with the Superdads ‘Freight Train’ By Mike Turner (Bass player for the Superdads) Do you ever feel like every week zooms by and you don’t know where it went? Weekends get filled with mowing the lawn, going to the kids’ sports games and birthday parties and then it starts again on Monday morning. Kinda crazy isn’t it? Sometimes it feels like you’re a massive freight train with loads of momentum unable to slow down. If you can relate to this, don’t worry – you are not alone. Unfortunately this is a common problem that I think stems from having too many commitments and not enough margin in our life. You know what I’m talking about… I don’t think I need to unpack why we get stressed and time-poor. What I do want to discuss is how to change it. On our website www. superdads.com.au/ there is a cool activity called ‘The Time Wheel’ which is a simple tool to look at a 24 hour period in our life. Within that 24 hours we have things like sleep, work, cooking, eating, R&R with family, socialising with friends, household jobs etc. How we use these 24 hours is the key to success in terms of time management. Do you have enough time allocated for travelling to work and school etc? Do you have enough time to relax in between activities? We are sometimes trained to be like machines - which seems fine right up to the point when we ‘burn out’ or yell abuse at another driver on the road or punch a wall at home during a minor argument. It’s only then that we notice that all is not well. Have a think about this stuff. It is possible to slow the freight train down guys. The Superdads – we are a bunch of guys who love playing music and have formed a band. New Dance School for Beerwah

Sarah Kwarcianyi is the face behind the new dance school opening in Beerwah next year. Masterpiece Dance will be offering a variety of dance classes for children aged three - 12 years. School News On the road to the future After 12 long years of schooling, Beerwah State High School’s graduating class of 2014 made their final walk out of the school gates on Friday. The week ended with the traditional Clap Out ceremony which saw many tears, laughs and sighs of relief from everyone involved. Beerwah High wishes the graduating class of 2014 all the best for the future.

Bringing joy to others

Landsborough State School students are bringing Christmas joy to children in developing countries. They are participating in Operation Christmas Child coordinated by the international relief organisation, Samaritan's Purse. Each class has been asked to fill shoeboxes with various items to make precious gifts to boys and girls around the world who may never have received a gift or new items in their lives. The criteria for items to put in the boxes were things to love, for school, to wear, to play with and for hygiene, so could be teddy bears, pencils, hair clips, yo-yos and toothbrushes. A total of 32 shoeboxes were donated by the school and will be distributed to people in need around the world. They are destined for places such as Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Cambodia, Vietnam and South Africa. Landsborough's School Chaplain, Linda Whysall, organised the school's participation in Operation Christmas Child. “The students get a lot of joy out of it - it makes them realise that other kids around the world might not have what we have,” she said. Everyone has been very excited about participating in this worthy cause. They know that receiving a gift-filled shoe box will put smiles on faces, bringing joy and hope to children in need.

Glasshouse Country College Formal This year Glasshouse Country Christian College held its Year 12 red carpet event and formal at Flaxton Gardens on Thursday, November 20. School kids transformed themselves into glamourous young men and women and shone on the night. There was a celebrative atmosphere that wasn’t dampened by the circling storm clouds. Every now and again graduates caught themselves crying when they realised it was the end of an era. Then classmates encouraged them to wait for the next day when the tears could flow without ruining make up. The next day the tears did flow as the students put on their school uniforms once last time to participate in the service and clap out.

Lovely local family

I would like to let you readers know about a lovely family here in the Glasshouse Country area! The members of this family come to our ‘Have a Break’ Playgroup and our Kids Club at the Uniting Church in Twin Peaks Drive at Beerwah. They are the owners of ‘The Hideaway’, and on December 12, the wonderful sight of many, many candles will light up their beautiful gardens. The adult members of the family have had the simply beautiful idea to throw open their gardens, charge a gold coin and then donate the proceeds to the work of our two childrens’ groups. The wonderful thought and love that is behind this is a testimony to the goodness of these people. Lately we very rarely see stories about the pure goodness of people and sometimes it is tempting to think that nobody cares, but this family does, and so many people everywhere do! The human race is not lost, yet, to carelessness and cruelty – people like this family, are abundant, but I must admit as far as I am concerned this family deserves a Star! Future of Halls Creek

On Friday, November 21, along with the Labor candidate for Glass House Brent Hampstead, I was fortunate enough attend a forum in Landsborough regarding the future of Halls Creek and the long-term development alternatives. Firstly, I would like to thank the organisers of the Forum, the Landsborough Area Community Association for taking the time to present the facts about the history of Halls Creek. Secondly, I would like to thank Wiebe ter Bals from the Sunshine Coast Environment Council for his informative and factual presentation. Having now attended several community forums, and researched this issue widely, I am of the view that there is no economic or environmental reason to ever develop Halls Creek. The potential environmental risks to the nearby Pumicestone Passage represent too great a risk for Halls Creek to be further considered. Even now the Passage only has a water quality rating of C with Caloundra South coming and presenting even more timely risks to our wetlands. Our Pumicestone Passage and related wetlands must be protected at all costs. The factual presentation that we had the pleasure of listening to last Friday reinforces the Sunshine Coast Council’s determination that Halls Creek Should not be developed from an economic perspective also. The lack of transport and related infrastructure adjacent to Halls Creek and the superior infrastructure arrangements that Beerwah East has to offer present a superior economic argument in favour of Beerwah East. Finally our Inter Urban Break to Brisbane would be reduced to just 14kms if Halls Creek were developed. Sometimes you just need to draw a line in the sand. I am of the view that we need the line in the sand now and I will oppose the future development of Halls Creek if elected as the next member for Caloundra in the forthcoming State Election. Valuable conversation

On November 6 I attended the first of four community conversations about mental health at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be part of a group sharing our diverse views and experiences regarding mental health, general well-being and illness or distress. The sessions have allocated topics (the first topic was ‘Shades of grey – is there a line between life, wellbeing and distress?’). This session wasn’t so much about education as about talking as a community. We’re happy to fine tune the sessions as we go along. I give a moo for mooloolah Give it a go and keep the heart of Mooloolah beating Mooloolah Valley Lions Club welcome locals The Mooloolah Valley Lions Club Information Night was deemed a resounding success as local residents were welcomed with a complimentary drink and nibbles. Those attending the event, which was held at Jae’s Place, learned how Lions make a difference in their community. On the night, Lions Club Treasurer Mary Herbert presented the founder of the Mooloolah Valley Playgroup, Jacqui Lewis, with a book for the playgroup; ‘Herbert Peabody and his Extraordinary Vegetable Patch’ by Bianca C. Ross. Mooloolah Valley Lions are an enthusiastic and community minded group. They can be seen in the town every second Saturday morning raising funds with a sausage sizzle at Martin Rungert Park and have assisted in bringing community groups together by helping each other and working together on projects. They have

facilitated two fundraising Trivia Nights and have assisted the Mooloolah and Eudlo State School P and C’s to raise funds for the schools at sports days, Arts Day and Christmas Carol events. Other community projects have included assisting the Mooloolah Community Centre with setting up for the Mooloolah Fun Fair in conjunction with the Glasshouse Country Festival, and assisting with parking and running a cake stall. Each year the Lions help with the Community Centre Christmas Party and many more projects. Recipients of donations given by the club from fundraising events include; Mooloolah Community Association, ASD support group Maroochydore, Mooloolah Valley Community Playgroup, Search And Rescue Dogs Australia, Uganda Safe Water Initiative, Eudlo Rural Fire

Brigade, Eudlo State School P and C, and assisting a student from the community on an exchange visit to Japan. A Christmas raffle of a wheelbarrow hamper will be drawn at the last barbecue for the year in Martin Rungert Park at 12.00noon on December 20. Tickets can be purchased at the fortnightly barbecue and on the day of the draw. The Club would like to thank all local businesses who have generously donated to the raffle and in particular to Mooloolah Mitre 10 for their donation of a wheelbarrow. If anyone in the Mooloolah / Valley / Eudlo area are interested in attending a Lions dinner meeting at Jae’s Place on Wednesday, December 3 we would love to see you there. Mooloolah lights up for Christmas The Christmas lights in Martin Rungart Park were all lit up on Sunday, November 16 for the very first time to much excitement in the local community. The lights are visible to all that drive through town in the evening, train passengers, and

people picnicking in the park - giving the town a lovely festive ambiance. Bring joy to kids in care this Christmas By Lea Parkes

The Queensland Government’s annual Kids in Care Christmas Appeal has been launched and our local state members Andrew Powell, member for Glass House and Mark McArdle, member for Caloundra are encouraging families to show their Christmas Spirit and donate a present and brighten the life of a child in care. “Christmas can be a difficult time for children who can’t live at home, but by donating a small present we can let these children and young people know that we care,” Andrew said. Last year the Glasshouse Country News office was a depot for gifts and we had an overwhelming response to the request for new, unwrapped gifts. Last year every child in care received a gift. And now our State members are asking us once to again support the appeal for the children and young people who need help and support. Presents can include gift cards, sporting equipment, board games, clothes and books. Gifts for teenage boys and girls, as well as the little ones, are greatly appreciated. Once again, ABC local radio is supporting the appeal and promoting it throughout Queensland. The age of boys and girls in care across Queensland this Christmas ranges from babies right through to 17-year-olds. The appeal runs from November 19 to December 5 to allow time for gifts to be sorted and allocated. Any surplus toys will be distributed to other disadvantaged children. Presents can be dropped off at Glasshouse Country News office in Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains, Maleny Electorate Office in Maple Street, the Caloundra Electorate Office in Bulcock Street or at ABC studios and shops at Maroochydore. People can visit www.communities.qld.gov.au to find the address of the closest donation point or find out more information on the state’s child protection system.

Final ParentSpace for 2014

The final meeting of ParentSpace for this year will take place on Thursday, November 27, with Dr Bob Jacobs once again being the guest presenter, discussing young people and mental health. ParentSpace is a local group of parents that meet fortnightly to assist parents to better understand the situations their adolescent children are dealing with and to make them better informed on how to support and communicate with their children. Dr Bob Jacobs has over 30 years’ experience working with children and parents as a teacher, coach, psychologist, mediator and lawyer. He is a registered Queensland clinical psychologist and is also registered with the Australian Attorney General’s Office as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (child-inclusive practice). The group will meet at BADYAC (next door to the Beerwah Skate Park) from 5.30pm – 7.30pm, it is free to attend, and refreshments are provided. The group’s co-ordinator Holly Ashton said the group is quite small, the meeting is pretty casual, and they are a very welcoming bunch. “It would be great to see local parents taking advantage of the opportunity,” she said. When Ken and Joey Bannister decided to open a new café in Beerwah they wanted to create a place that offered something ‘different’ and definitely a little bit ‘quirky’ that put a modern twist on traditional favourites. Being lovers of vintage and retro, they’ve created a venue that offers the best of what generations of Australian’s have loved, going for a milkshake and an ice-cream cone at the local milk bar in the 50s, or a hot beverage and a sweet treat at a coffee lounge of the 70s – all with a funky contemporary feel. They don’t just serve up traditional ice cream cones, but 14 flavours of gelato and four refreshing sorbet choices of the award-winning Colin James range. This will expand to include another six choices next month and can be served in a gluten free cone.

Happenings Out and About Formal celebrations Beerwah State students began what was an emotional, yet exciting, final week of school with their formal evening on Monday. Students made some very stylish and dramatic entrances in a variety of vehicles from being ‘doubled on a Vespa’, pulling up in a stretch limousine, in a hot rod, on dirt bikes, in a very cool ‘Kombi’ and an open top 4 Wheel Drive. The evening was held at the Caloundra Events Centre, this was a chance for students, their guests and staff to celebrate (in style) the achievements made over the past five years of high school. It has been my pleasure to attend various AGM'S and end of year functions over the past fortnight. I enjoy these opportunities to catch up and listen to what has been achieved locally and to also thank the army of volunteers that contribute so much to our sense of community. It is difficult to imagine how much poorer we would be without 25 years of GMAN's passion for the environment, or our network of neighbourhood centres that underpin our community safety net, and those whom are willing to help those who need a hand in these tough times. It was also my privilege to officially open the new Beerwah Village shopping centre, which is an important attraction for people from the greater region to visit and shop in the Glasshouse country townships.

New technology at Beerwah Library

It is exciting to see Beerwah Library cementing its reputation as a Technology Trendsetter. Following the purchase of a new interactive projector and tablet devices, the library now offers ‘plug and play’ meeting room technology to community groups. The interactive projector can be used to share and interact with projected information on a large screen, which is great for modern learning styles and meetings. Flying-fox management meeting

Landsborough residents are invited to a meeting on Wednesday, November 26, from 4.00pm at the Landsborough Pub to discuss concerns regarding a local flying-fox roost. Council is looking to work with the community to find solutions as to how best to deal with these challenging neighbours. It will be a challenge but we hope that together, we can find an appropriate balance that will enable council and the community to meet our environmental responsibilities, while also satisfying the needs of local residents.

It was a journey of discovery to experience so many different places and landscapes. The highlight for me was to climb Ayres Rock. Wow, what a climb to the top of this Aussie landmark. There was another couple I connected with on the climb. At first I was encouraging them they could make it, but as time passed, they were inspiring me to keep going. The slogan ‘we’re better together’ was so true for me that day. Synergy happens when

we ‘do life together’. A great verse in the bible is Ecclesiastes 4:9 ‘Two can accomplish more than twice as much as one, for the results can be much better.’ 10 If one falls, the other pulls him up; but if a man falls when he is alone, he’s in trouble.’ To do life well we need to do it with others. Contributed by Jenny Kelly A nice drop of rain from that storm washed the dust off the course and hopefully put a little in everyone’s tanks. We had 58 girls come out to play a Single Stroke for trophies donated by a couple of our lady members, Vikki Bartel and Lorraine Dillon. Thanks for your support girls. Just one week after handing on the baton of Treasurer, Val Turner had a great win in Division 1 with a 68 Nett. Val was followed by Cathy Stone who came in with a 72 Nett. Our new Vice Captain Lyn Steele took out Division 2 with 75 Nett, on a count back from Marie Norton also on 75 Nett. Nearest to the Pins went to Val on both 2 and Div 1 on the 18th, Hope Hannah was closest on the 5th and Kathy Moffat on 16. Division 2 on Lorraine, Lyn, Val and Vikki the 18 was won by Joan Harvey. The random birdie was a skinner on the 13th and the ball rundown went to 76 Nett. Only two weeks left of our regular competition before we break for the Christmas season, better make good use of them. Stay safe and start looking for a likely pine tree.

In the social games, Viv James and Dave Clarke 25 def Leisa Craven and Grahame Young 24; and Rhyllis Aitken and Rob Scullion 19 def Brian Larkin and John Aitken 14. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Rae Farrell and Kerry Capern with two wins and 46 points; and the Runners-up, with the highest number of points in either game were Peter Astbury and Rodney Dick with 28 points in Game 2. The ‘Wooden Spoon’ prize for the lowest score in either game went to Allan Pashby and Jonathan Orr. Congratulations to Margaret Beasley, Clive Sinton and Kevin Beasley who defeated Millie Freshwater, Wendy Platt and Rodney Platt in the final of the 2014 Club Certified Mixed Triples Competition on Saturday. Our annual Christmas Luncheon and Presentation of Trophies will be held on Saturday, December 6 commencing at 11.45am. Age no barrier to cricketing success

The National ‘Over 60 / 70 years’ Cricket Championships were held in Melbourne from November 8-13. With Queensland sending three over 60's teams and for the first time an over 70 years team, that included two local Glasshouse Country players, Kenny Bennett from Glass House and Noel Cox (Vice Captain) from Beerwah. The team won all three games in Pool B, playing NSW, VIC, SA. They played NSW (the winners in Pool A) for the final and came out the winners of the shield. This was a good result for the first ever ‘Over 70s’ team and great to see our local blokes get there.
