24 hours on Mount Beerwah By Jack Waters CLIMBING the tourist route on Mount Beerwah can be a challenging experience in itself … but what about climbing it 20 times in a row? For 24 hours from 8.15am on Saturday, October 17, Beerwah local Britt Wallace did exactly that – a day and night climbing up and down the Mount Beerwah tourist route. This type of physical challenge isn’t new for Britt who recently completed the Glass House 100km ultramarathon in 19 hours. Realising she could go for even longer, Britt embarked on an even bigger challenge. She said during the Mount Beerwah challenge a 10-minute power nap and a few stops to refill her water bottles, tend to her feet and stock up on snacks was all she needed to keep powering through. “75% of the challenge was blissful given the beauty of the mountains, people and the excitement of seeing what I’m capable of,” Britt said. “The other 25% was a real struggle, especially during the night portion. I used a head torch and enjoyed the company of spiders, toads and rats.”
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Britt covered 27km with a total elevation gain of 6,000m on the journey. She said these extreme physical and mental challenges were her way of strengthening the mind and maintaining good mental health. “I do these challenges to increase my capacity for suffering and my ability to support myself through it. “I’m also interested to see how much I can endure and who I can become if I give myself a chance.” Although it was a solo challenge, Britt said she had plenty of help and encouragement along the way. “Everyone played a massive part and their encouragement filled my tank and my heart,” she said. “Some of my good friends from the Social Climbers and Hikers Facebook group joined me for a few laps on Saturday and Sunday.” One of those was Beerwah climbing enthusiast Jade King who contacted GC&M News to share Britt’s story.
news
Jade said Britt was an absolute inspiration and a phenomenal climber. “I hope she inspires many more people to challenge themselves, whether it be a single mountain or many,” Jade said. “Climbing has helped me and so many I have met on the mountains overcome some of life’s challenges. “Social Climbers and Hikers Facebook group supports every level of climber, and it was fantastic to see so many of the group support and encourage Brit in her 24-hour challenge,” Jade said. Britt said the next challenge was Mount Tibrogargan where she plans to take it up another notch. “I would love to eventually align myself with charities when I do these challenges to raise money for people struggling with their mental health,” she said. “It’s very close to my heart and climbing the Glass House Mountains alongside such lovely people has made a great difference for my own mental health.”

Landsborough dog breeding facility refused By Greg Brown IN what some would describe as a surprise move, the Sunshine Coast Council voted against a recommendation from its own planning staff and refused the application for a large new dog breeding facility in Landsborough. The decision at the council meeting on Thursday, October14, may go some way to restore locals’ faith in the resolve of councillors to respond to community concerns in the face of administrative limitations. After receiving more than 400,000 objections to the development lodged by Diamond Valley Kennels, many thought all hope was lost when the council planning department recommended that the application be approved. The department stated that animal welfare and ethics had no role to play in council deciding on matters under the planning scheme. However, a majority of the elected representatives thought differently. Councillor for Division 1 Rick Baberowski led the fight, tabling an alternate recommendation to refuse the application. In a well thought out amendment, Cr Baberowski set out why he considered the application had failed under the planning scheme including issues relating to the protection of the natural environment, biodiversity, waterways and natural wetlands. He said that the application failed to demonstrate how it would protect, manage and enhance the environmental values of adjacent areas. The application failed to demonstrate that amenity issues such as noise would not impact on people living nearby, Cr Baberowski said. The location, nature, scale

and intensity were also flagged as being inconsistent with the rural land zoning. All Cr Baberowski’s reasonings against the application relied solely on planning scheme considerations. The no vote was – as legally required – not based on animal welfare or ethical considerations. Of the 11 elected representatives on council, nine were in the room when discussions and voting took place. Mayor Mark Jamieson and Cr Jason O’Pray both identified a perceived conflict of interest and asked to be excluded from the meeting during the agenda item. The discussion on Cr Baberowski’s proposed alternate recommendation to refuse was passionate and at times heartfelt. He acknowledged the challenges the councillors faced at the meeting in considering and voting for or against the application. “Very large numbers of the community, both locally and more broadly, put in submissions believing that they could forcefully argue for a focus on animal welfare issues in considering this impact assessable development application,” Cr Baberowski said.
“In essence, they passionately told us they don’t think a mass breeding facility gives dogs the quality of life they should have in our society. And personally, I agree.” Cr Baberowski told the meeting he did not understand the ethics behind this style of animal breeding, which he said sought to minimise effort and maximise profit. “However, the legal advice we have received is that this decision must be made on planning grounds and that animal welfare should not be part of this decision,” he said. Cr Baberowski said there was sufficient conflict with the planning scheme to refuse the application. He methodically outlined his arguments as to why the application did not meet the requirements of the planning scheme, building a case to convince the other councillors to refuse the application on planning grounds. “The Sunshine Coast has no need for a breeding facility of this scale and, rather than providing a community benefit, it would cause more problems throughout the region,” he said.

What you had to say … Cr Baberowski contended that an increased supply of dogs in the region could lead to the pound having to manage and euthanise a greater number of abandoned and surrendered dogs. He asserted that it was the councillors’ role as the representatives of the community to make a broader strategic evaluation and to refuse the application. After considerable discussion and debate, eight councillors voted for Cr Baberowski’s amended recommendation to refuse the application (Cr Baberowski, Cr Terry Landsberg, Cr Joe Natoli, Cr Winston Johnston, Cr Christian Dickson, Cr Maria Suarez, Cr Ted Hungerford and Cr David Law) and one vote against (Cr Peter Cox). It is likely the refusal will be appealed to the Planning and Environment Court by Diamond Valley Kennels. Division 10 councillor Ted Hungerford bluntly outlined his view that the appeal could be costly and that the court’s decision would most likely not support council’s position. Cr Hungerford shared the community’s concerns regarding animal welfare but hoped they would also support the expense of an appeal process. “I would be very dismayed if the community criticised us for the cost of doing that seeing the high level of concern,” he said. How the decision plays out will depend on whether Diamond Valley Kennels lodges an appeal and whether the Planning and Environment Court is swayed by the more than 400,000 voices who urged the council to support emotional animal welfare considerations over cold planning scheme provisions.
AS soon as the decision was made at the Sunshine Coast Council meeting, GC&M News posted the result to our social media sites. Of the many positive comments received, here’s a sample: Karen Aucott Moran Well done Cr Rick Baberowski – Division 1 thank you for listening to the people. Rhonda Carter Great result, thank you for making the right and humane decision. Katelind Shanna Best news!!! Thank you councillors for listening to the community. Sally Hayden Greatest news today. Thank you to people power. Val France Thank you Cr Winston Johnston Division 5. Gaby Luft Thank you all who did contact council/their councillor about this – well done. Bekky Anne Thanks to all the councillors who listened to us and voted accordingly. The council gets lots of criticism so it’s important to recognise the things they do right. Lyn Robyn Local councils need to represent the views of residents. We don’t want it and, although it may cost money to fight, animal welfare is at stake, which is worth fighting for … and we don’t want a precedent set so that others also try to set up these

establishments on the Sunshine Coast. Joan Binks At last council has listened to the ratepayers. Great outcome, thank you. Other groups and organisations were also just as positive on their social media pages: No Puppy Farms in Queensland A huge “THANK YOU” to the eight councillors who saw the application for exactly what it is and listened to their constituents. Oscar’s Law A big thank you to No Puppy Farms in Queensland who campaigned so strongly to get this application knocked back! We want to thank Sunshine Coast Council who have only moments ago voted to REJECT … THIS is the power we have when we stand together. Animal Liberation Queensland Thanks to everyone who made objections during the public consultation, wrote to councillors over the last few days (several councillors mentioned receiving 800 to over 1,000 emails in just the last three days), and everyone who spread the word. Thanks too to No Puppy Farms in Queensland who have continued to keep a spotlight on this development through the drawn out application process. The 400,000 submissions sent via Oscar’s Law was also referenced frequently as a sign of community concern, as well as the thousands from PETA Australia and everyone who wrote in individual submissions.

Caloundra local ready to fight for Fisher WITH a federal election slated within the next six months, the Australian Labor Party has announced its candidates for the Sunshine Coast seats of Fisher and Fairfax, currently held by Andrew Wallace and Ted O’Brien, both LNP. In the local electorate of Fisher, Judene Andrews will be a name you will see more of as the ALP endorsed candidate. Ms Andrews, a Caloundra resident, is the daughter of a mechanic and a factory worker. She joined the workforce at age 15, working for the Department of Transport coordinating support for people with disabilities. Ms Andrews has previously worked closely with the veteran community as an adviser and pioneered a volunteer resource and recruitment centre on the Gold Coast. Since moving to the Sunshine Coast, Ms Andrews works as an environmental sustainability manager with a leading health and community service provider, driving the organisation’s sustainability. Ms Andrews says she understands the issues that matter to the people of Fisher. “We’re not getting the leadership we deserve from the Morrison government, which is all about politics and not about the people of the Sunshine Coast,” she said.
“The government has failed on the vaccination rollout, failed on climate change and aged care, and failed to deliver adequate economic support for our communities. “Our region deserves better than the MPs here who have failed to deliver for our community and stood by watching more cuts come through from this government.” Health worker and mother of five, Sue Ferguson has been announced as the candidate for Fairfax. Labor leader Anthony Albanese said that both Fairfax and Fisher were electorates that needed an MP willing to fight for their community. “Judene and Sue have the skills and experience necessary to be those representatives,” Mr Albanese said. “They will be champions for better health services on the Sunshine Coast, and strong advocates for good local jobs and a real plan to address climate change. “Under a Labor government we’ll always make sure Fairfax and Fisher get their fair share.”

Simpson desert adventure LOCAL Endeavour Rally team Kenny’s Angels was one of 43 teams that recently took part in one of Australia’s most iconic charity car rallies, which raised record funds for people with a disability. The 2021 Great Endeavour Rally, dubbed the Simpson Desert Adventure, was postponed twice due to COVID lockdowns and border restrictions. However, when the rally was finally held earlier this month, the record number of entrants banded together to raise more than $570,000 for the Endeavour Foundation. The rally left St George on Friday, October 8, stopping overnight at Hungerford, Cameron Corner, The Dig Tree, Betoota, Big Red Camp, Birdsville and a mystery
stop at Davenport Downs – the largest cattle station in Queensland – before heading to Adavale and crossing the finish line in Charleville on Saturday, October 16. At the end of the final day Kenny’s Angels were crowned the winners, with only one point separating them from the next team. As the rally is not a race, Kenny’s Angels won the rally on points for their consistency. Each day the average time for all participants was taken and the closer the team was to the average, the more points they were awarded. If they were too fast or too slow they got fewer points. Kenny’s Angels spokesperson Amanda Smyth said they still couldn’t believe they won. “Our aim has always been to finish without a breakdown, so winning was really the icing on the cake,” Amanda said. This is the third time the team of Amanda, Susan Ellwood and Sonia Heilig have taken up the rally challenge. In 2018 they travelled from the Gold Coast to Yamba via Dubbo, and in 2019 they took off from Bundaberg and finished in Townsville via Karumba. Each entrant makes a pledge to fundraise $3,500 to enter the rally. This year the Angel’s raised an impressive $18,007. The team’s catchy name was established a few years back when the three friends saw Kenny Rogers at
Kenny’s Angels – Sonia Heilig, Susan Ellwood and Amanda Smyth the Gympie Muster, which led the country music fans to refer to themselves as Kenny’s Angels. Endeavour Foundation event specialist Nathan Woolhouse said the pandemic had caused the 2020 rally to be postponed to August 2021, and then again to October. However, despite the postponements, passionate entrants had made the impossible possible. “People who would usually look for an overseas holiday contacted us because they wanted to holiday at home and they were looking for something a bit different to do,” Nathan said. “Along the way, we had some challenges too. About a year’s worth of rain fell in a day when we were at Betoota and a few cars got written off in different places but nobody was injured. “It’s all part and parcel of a rally, and it’s why we bring the Australian Army mechanics along for support,” he said.

It’s a 10 from me LIKE so many Glass House Mountains locals, I have been excitedly waiting to see what has been going on behind the closed doors at the Glasshouse Tavern for the past few months. GC&M News recently had a sneak peek inside, which must be like how the judges on ‘The Block’ feel just before the big room reveals. The place looks fantastic – so open, modern, clean, bright and fresh. With stage one of the renovations completed inside the tavern, the team is now putting their energy into getting everything just right before opening to the public, which is tentatively
happening on Friday, October 29. Having checked out the menu, I reckon locals are going to be really impressed. There are the main stays of what you expect from a tavern menu such as steaks and parmies, but there is so much more! I am looking forward to trying one of the handmade pizzas that you can see being created and going into the massive gas-fired pizza oven. Brownie can’t wait to try out the tasty delights that will come out of the tavern’s own meat smoker and the gourmet burgers. With a food crew of five qualified chefs and one apprentice, diners are sure to be impressed with the quality and

MALENY PATHWAYS WORKING GROUP – 100 community members attended a public forum on Monday, October 18 to hear the results from a survey completed by 400 people assessing the accessibility and safety of Maleny pathways. A summary of a detailed report prepared by the group was presented. It showed the importance of pathways in a healthy and connected community and reflected the significant safety concerns faced by those wishing or needing to get around Maleny without a car. Detailed maps and community responses highlighted the lack of connectivity/gaps in existing pathways and the non-existent pathways for safe access to Maleny’s facilities and key tourist spots. Local councillor Winston Johnston attended to hear and respond to specific questions from the floor. The survey report, a rich community resource, will be widely distributed to Sunshine Coast Council and government decisionmakers. Maleny QCWA to celebrate 100 years in style MALENY QCWA branch will celebrate the Queensland Country Women’s Association’s upcoming 100th birthday on November 2 with a Roaring Twenties Melbourne Cup lunch – and you’re invited! The first CWA committee was formed on August 11, 1922 and since then QCWA branches around the state have been a place for women to come together, enjoy each other’s company and help their local community. In 1936 the Maleny branch was affiliated with an organisation called Australian Comforts Fund and Circa 1930s
worked actively for the welfare of soldiers, regularly sending food parcels to England. The new rest rooms opened in June 1953. The rooms were used to house hospital patients in 1963 when a cyclone forced an evacuation of the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital on New Year’s Day. In 1993 part of the rest rooms were relinquished so the visitor information centre could be established and in 2005 another part of the rest rooms were turned into the Maleny Communi Community Centre office, with the CWA ro rooms relocated to the old Scout d den. The upcoming QCWA centenary ccelebrations are certainly ssomething the ladies of the M Maleny branch are proud to be a apart of. Robert Blair Neil art exhibition Academic and Cultural Cup 2021 Contributed by Peter Voigt
AN exhibition of art works by Roberts Blair Neil will be held at Vianta Arts in Simpson Street Beerwah from Sunday, October 31 to December 12, with an official opening on Friday, November 5 at 6.30 pm. Robert’s artwork is part of collections in various galleries throughout Australia as well as private collections worldwide. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he spent many years in Canada. Robert was an architectural draftsman who was always interested in art and was mainly self-taught. He took various courses in drawing and painting, including a life drawing class at Edinburgh College of Art. After immigrating to Australia, he completed a diploma of art studies and courses in watercolour and oil painting at the University of Western Australia. Robert loved watercolour, acrylics, pen and ink drawing, and spending time outdoors. The Australian landscape and bush became his inspiration for later works. Robert died in 2017 at age 84. He was still painting in his eighties with his work becoming more abstract.

A journey to self-discovery DIAGNOSED with dyslexia in her 20s, the now Sunshine Coast author and personal development strategist Yogita Ridgley has learnt to embrace her true self. Writing ‘Finding Me, Myself and I’ was a journey that led Yogita down a path of self-discovery. However, it wasn’t always easy. From a young age, Yogita knew she was different – at least, she was told she was. When she was just 6 years old, Yogita was given an English test where she had to spell 20 words. “I did not get one word right,” she said. “My teacher asked me to stand in front of the class so she could teach other children a lesson. I was called stupid, lazy, dumb and an embarrassment to the class. “I stood there shaking, tears rolling down my cheeks, wishing to be invisible. I was not stupid, not lazy, I’m definitely not dumb. I am dyslexic.” Yogita found her passion in educating people about what life is like living with dyslexia and helping others find their authentic selves, no matter what challenges they face. Her first published book ‘Finding Me, Myself and I’ is made up of journal entries Yogita compiled while travelling the world.
For someone who has dreamed about writing a book for as long as she can remember, this was a monumental achievement. “Having a published book means that anyone is capable of doing anything. It doesn’t matter how big your challenge; you can still become something amazing,” Yogita said.
“I invested in my personal development to shift my self-esteem from not existing to self-belief and confidence, learned to accept that I am dyslexic and embraced my dyslexic powers and learned to manage my dyslexic weakness. “Now it is my life’s purpose to bringing awareness to dyslexia so people understand this condition, its weaknesses and its strengths.” Yogita has advice for others who are dyslexic. Step one - get tested if: - you struggle with spelling, reading, writing. - your child is struggling with spelling, reading, writing. - you are a teacher and your student is struggling with spelling, reading, writing. Step two - know you are not alone. Step three - work on your self-esteem and self-belief/confidence. Yogita said it had been scientifically proven that dyslexic brains were wired to process information differently. “For those with dyslexia their brain has an incredibly difficult time doing what’s called phonetic decoding, so they struggle with reading (connecting the sounds), writing (connecting the letters) and grammar.
“People with dyslexia see the world differently because they are capable of seeing the big picture, to think outside the square, and to create and connect with empathy,” Yogita said. “Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Walt Disney, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Chris Robshaw, Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Steven Spielberg and Richard Branson are a few of the world’s dyslexic people who have used their dyslexic powers and abilities to do amazing things in the world. “Dyslexic weaknesses are reading, writing and spelling. It is a struggle we live with daily. “Dyslexic powers are creativity, innovation, futurist, problem solver, out-of-the-box thinker, storyteller, leadership qualities, strategist and empathy. We can’t read the language, but we can read people. “Imagination is the key to everything. Dyslexia is your superpower. Stop living in shame and step into your superpower,” Yogita said. Yogita’s book can be purchased in a print format or as an e-book via her website at www.travelingwithmemyselfandi. com/shop See ad page 19

Elder abuse forum THERE has been a lot of publicity in recent years about domestic and family violence but less emphasis on how our elders can also suffer physical, emotional and financial abuse. Speak Up Now, an initiative of the combined service clubs of Maleny and the Blackall Range, is holding a forum on elder abuse on Monday, December 13, from 9am-12noon at the Maleny RSL. There will be a short film in the form of a drama outlining issues for older people and their legal rights, including enduring powers of attorney and wills, followed by a complimentary morning tea. A question-and-answer session will then be hosted by Julian Porter from the Suncoast Community Legal Service and well-known local Tove Easton from Easton Lawyers. Representatives from Centacare Domestic Violence Service and Relationships Australia elder abuse team will also attend. Rev Liena Hoffman will speak about a conversation hub planned for Maleny to enable families to gather to hold difficult conversations related to enduring powers of attorney, etc. All are welcome to attend the forum to learn what you can do to ensure your right to safety in your advanced years. Bring your questions for the experts. RSVP for catering purposes to Val France 0419 599 042 or speakupnowstopdomesticviolence@gmail.com Doors open at 8.45am and morning tea will be provided.

Vale Michael McMahon
National Recycling Week
Contributed by Sonia Isaacs Clark THE Diamond Valley and Mooloolah communities were recently saddened by the unexpected loss of one of their true elder statesmen, Michael McMahon. Remembered by many as the ultimate gentleman and a much-loved colleague, committee member and friend, Michael died peacefully at his acreage property in Diamond Valley. A well-respected and integral member of the local community since moving to his property Arcadia more than 20 years ago, Michael was always committed to helping others and brought an insightful mind, playful sense of humour and genuine compassion and empathy to all his interactions. With degrees in theology, philosophy and social work, he had a long professional career with the state Department of Child Welfare, the Family Court and the federal Department of Veteran Affairs. Michael had long-term involvement in several community committees and organisations such as the Mooloolah Valley Lions, Mooloolah Valley Community Association, Mooloolah Hall and more recently as president of the Mooloolah Men’s Shed project. With his kind counsel based on a wealth of professional experience and worldly knowledge, Michael was dedicated to contributing to the community and was equally held in high regard. Michael always made time for anyone who wanted to have a yarn and loved a good discussion on a wide and sometimes eclectic range of topics from beekeeping and the natural environment to mental health and concerns for those socially isolated or impacted by COVID-19.
Michael at his property in Diamond Valley In recent years he was a regular fixture at the local café where he would catch up on the latest local and world news and provide a friendly beacon of engagement for locals. He would listen without judgement and bring a sense of support and compassion that drew people to him. Michael never shied away from a robust conversation that explored the deeper complexities of life and he loved a good political or philosophical discussion, often served up with a twinkle of mischief and humour in his eyes. Born in 1944, the eldest in a large family of 11 siblings, Michael grew up in Brisbane. His life-long dedication to helping others was founded at a young age. His initial plan was to become a priest and, as a young man, he travelled to Rome to follow his vocation. He later realigned his professional life towards counselling and social work, getting married and having a family. Michael is survived by his siblings and three children, Sean, Lorelei and Joe, and their families. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Aussie music legend Phil Emmanuel acknowledged HE was the late, great muso who not only played the guitar but made it sing with his off-the-charts strumming. Former Buderim resident Phil Emmanuel OAM, who sadly died in 2018 at age 66 from an asthma attack, was recently honoured with the naming of the new Phil Emmanuel Stage at Buderim Village Park. The new plaque was unveiled at an intimate ceremony with Phil’s family and close friends.
Amanda Emmanuel with the memorial plaque at Buderim Village Park
Cr Ted C d Hungerford f d said id it i was a fitting i tribute to the dedicated musician who gave so much to so many. “It’s recognition of Phil’s significant contribution to the local community through his music and mentoring of local artists. He also volunteered for several charities and cared deeply about the environment,” Cr Hungerford said. Phil’s wife Amanda Emmanuel said she was proud to see the stage dedicated to Phil. “Not a lot of people knew how dedicated he was,” Amanda said. “He was a great guitarist but he also did a lot of one-on-ones and he used to play with the local musicians if they asked him to. They’re all better musicians because Phil played with them.” Phil played with the likes of Hank Marvin, The Doobie Brothers and Carlos Santana.

Boomerang Donation
Native Plants Sunshine Coast branch
Contributed by Yvonne Holmes
MALENY Boomerang Bags group recently donated $1,000 to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) as we have in previous years. We use salvaged and secondhand materials to make sustainable alternatives to plastic bags. Additionally, as a not-for-profit group, the money we raise from the sale of the bags stays in Maleny through our support of the MNC by donating the money raised from the sale of the bags. Boomerang Bags is linking with Waste Action Maleny (WAM) to source suitable salvaged and second-hand fabrics to make our bags. We accept donations of suitable fabrics (cotton, linen, sheets, pillowcases and doona covers) as well as thread to upcycle into a range of bright and practical bags. WAM is a recent initiative that seeks to increase the recovery and reuse or
recycling of materials and items beyond those that can go in the yellow-lidded council recycling bin. Maleny Boomerang Bags will be open from 10am-2pm on Thursday, November 11 in the CWA Bicentenary Room, on the corner of Coral Street and Bicentenary Lane Maleny, during National Recycling Week. New members are always welcome. Sewing skills are not essential as there are a range of tasks involved in the process of making a beautiful bag – sorting, ironing, cutting, pinning and screen-printing pockets. The bags are available for sale throughout the year at Peace of Green Gallery in Maple Street and Forest Heart Nursery in Coral Street. To find out more about Boomerang Bags phone Yvonne on 0428 122 338 or to learn more about WAM go to www.facebook.com/wasteactionmaleny1

The event will be held in the verandah

Putting jazz into Sunday
A night at the Proms
FANCY a Sunday afternoon kicking back to the sweet sounds of Australian jazz legend Wilma Reading? Then you won’t want to miss the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club event at the Power Boat Club on Sunday, November 7 from 1pm. Wilma, a contemporary of Duke Ellington and Oscar Peterson, grew up in what she describes as the “village of Cairns” in the 1950s. The Indigenous singer was discovered performing at a Brisbane jazz club while on a school softball tour. This was the catalyst for an international career that spanned the globe and recently saw her inducted into the National Indigenous Music Awards Hall of Fame and being interviewed on Richard Fidler’s ABC ‘Conversations’. Wilma’s magnificent voice will be backed by 13-piece band Sweet Thunder in a show not to be missed. Tickets must be booked and paid for in advance online at www.sunshinecoastjazzclub.net.au, Richard on 0427 782 960 or email suncoastjazz2@gmail.com
WITH all the usual pomp and fanfare, the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra will present an unforgettable end-of-year Proms concert with a World War II memories theme. Favourite music from the World War II era will relive the last night of the Proms as if you were in Albert Hall. Players back in action
Cosentino Deception
THE Maleny Players are bouncing back after COVID restrictions forced the cancellation of their September production ‘Secrets’ after one performance. The show is now postponed until next year. However, lovers of live theatre will soon have another entertaining show. With a cast of ten talented performers, ‘Never Lost for Words’ is a celebration of the power of language and the different ways it can be used to express feelings, tell stories, manipulate others and maintain relationships. The diverse show includes a look at the lives of the six extraordinary Mitford sisters through their letters to one another, a satire of contemporary corporate culture and a rendition of ‘The Ancient Mariner’. The Ancient Mariner story of a man punished for violating the natural world is still relevant today and it is a great example of how words can be made almost musical. ‘Never Lost for Words’ will be staged in a novel way, with patrons seated at tables during the show enjoying light refreshments that are included in the ticket price. The performance will be on the tiered area of the Playhouse. The reduced seating arrangement will limit audience size and there are only two performances, so patrons should book early. The performances will be on Friday and Saturday, November 5-6 at 6.30pm. Tickets are $20 and are on sale now via www.malenyplayers.org or www.trybooking.com/BUWLL

His trademark blend of dance and magic with a touch of hilarious audience participation will take you on a journey that will captivate fans, new and old, until the very last mind-bending moment. Now recognised as Australia’s most successful magician, Cosentino has toured to packed houses and rave reviews around the world while his prime-time TV specials have been seen by more than 100 million people. Where: The Events Centre Caloundra When: Monday, November 8 at 7:30pm Costs: Adults $86.50, family (two adults, two children) $287.60 Bookings: 5491 4240 or www.theeventscentre.com.au
Classical music concert
JOIN Eudlo local Louise King and special guest artists from the Australian Chamber Music Collective on Sunday, November 14 at 3pm for a concert at Eudlo Hall, renowned for its stunning acoustics and warm hospitality. The program will celebrate the drama and lyricism of the string family – the violin, viola and cello – with intimate and gripping duos by Greek-French composer Iannis Xenakis, English pastoralist Rebecca Clarke and French composer Darius Milhaud, culminating with the exhilarating string quartet ‘Death and the Maiden’ by Franz Schubert. The Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra Krescendo Quartet will be the support act. Tickets are $35 music lover, $30 early bird, $25 concession or $15 student, plus booking fee. A word from John McGrath – Return of the neighbourhood
With national home values rising at the fastest pace we’ve seen since my early days in real estate in the early 1980’s, it’s no wonder APRA has tapped the brakes a little to “ensure the financial system remains safe”. In todays heated housing market, APRA wants to ensure borrowers don’t take on more debt than they can comfortably afford over the long term. So, in their first intervention since 2017, APRA has told the banks to raise the minimum interest rate buffer used to assess new loan applications from 2.5% to 3% above the product rate. That means if you apply for a loan with a 2.5% interest rate, the bank will assess your ability to repay the loan at an interest rate of 5.5%, thereby reducing your borrowing capacity by approximately 5%. This is a prudent first measure to ensure homeowners can keep paying their loans when interest rates inevitably go up. While that’s probably a number of years away, it’s better to act early to ensure the price gains of today are not lost when the market possibly corrects as rates go up. There have been few silver linings in the wake of COVID-19 lockdowns, border closures and social distancing rules. The roaring property market has been
26
a surprise outcome, and within that are several sub-trends that I think will result in a better long term lifestyle for many Australians. One of them is a shift back to a more localised way of living, which is a topic we discuss in our new annual McGrath Report. We have returned to a way of life enjoyed by generations past, where we know our neighbours’ names, our children play together in the streets, and local businesses have an important role in our community. Research by sociologists has found that wellbeing is positively influenced by community belonging and togetherness during disaster. They expect relationships to be strengthened due to community identification and feelings of unity in response to the pandemic. Working from home is now an entrenched way of life, giving more of us the opportunity to spend quality time in our communities, getting to know our fellow locals better. This change in the way we work is expanding the horizon for Australian city residents. As social demographer Bernard Salt puts it, “The city centre is no longer the pivot around which urban life revolves.”
COVID-19 is inspiring a shift to middle and outer ring suburban living as more people search for greater open space, more connected communities and housing affordability. The desire to live close to the city to reduce the work commute is no longer relevant, so lifestyle has moved up as the No. 1 priority. Mr Salt describes these relocators as ‘VESPAs’ or Virus Escapees Seeking Provincial Australia. These inner city residents are buying larger, more affordable homes away from the CBD, while others are leaving the big cities for a regional sea change or treechange and a closer connection to nature. Both trends have a common denominator – a lifestyle shift away from the urban hustle and bustle to local village living and a slower pace of life. People are increasingly shopping locally, driven by a strong desire to support local business owners and producers, even if it means spending more than they would at large retailers. The growing focus on staying local is highlighting the benefits of the 20-minute neighbourhood standard of urban planning. This ideal scenario gives residents access to shops, services, schools, public transport and employment within a 20-minute walk. Residents of such neighbourhoods not only enjoy convenience but also better health because they are walking more often and generally spending more time outdoors. Finding joy in green spaces is a popular pastime these days. When gyms were shut and local sport was banned, people turned to parks, bike trails and walking paths to exercise their bodies and minds. What’s more, green spaces have a positive influence on housing prices, particularly apartments. CoreLogic Research Director, Tim Lawless describes a “statistically significant positive relationship between unit prices and proximity to green areas.”
John McGrath
During lockdowns, many homeowners are renovating to refresh their living environments, thereby raising the value of their properties whilst also lifting the look of local streets. The pandemic is shining a spotlight on the importance of building connections within local communities, changing the way Australians live, play and work. That focus is unlikely to shift once COVID-19 restrictions end, giving many a work/life balance they could only dream of before. To read more about the return of the neighbourhood, please call our office on 07 5405 3628 so that we can email you a full copy of the McGrath Report 2022.

YOU The gig economy
I STARTED my working life at 18 when I left school. I recently turned 48 and during this 30-year period I have only ever had two full-time positions for the combined duration of just over two years. For the rest of the time I have been employed casually, including during the four years I attended university where I worked in demolition. As a result of this, at times I have relied on government support and, in turn, became a victim of Robodebt. A fraudulent figure of $11,000 was raised and I had debt collectors chasing me for money I didn’t owe. This approach is in dramatic contrast to their management of the Jobkeeper scheme. Why were the taxes of hardworking casuals in low-paid jobs given to businesses without an obligation to repay the money? Why isn’t the same zest used to recoup the money that was fraudulently stolen from Australian taxpayers? Can we, the people, pursue this ourselves and have the companies charged, thereby ensuring that the stolen money is returned and the business licences of the thieves are cancelled?
If the government is unwilling to act on this issue, then they aren’t fit to govern. From my experience, and the challenges faced by continually being employed on a casual basis, the desire of businesses to maximise their profits is achieved at the expense of the workers and is tearing apart the social fabric of our country. The construction industry usually has a two-week shutdown over Christmas, and this year I may need to apply for Jobseeker so I can survive over that period. Sure, I have a job to return to, but for two weeks I will be unemployed and have no alternative income. For all the casuals in the industry this is a fortnight without pay. Are casuals expected to find alternative work in this period to pay the rent and feed themselves? Are casual workers deemed unworthy of a Christmas break? Employment and industrial relations policies currently in place are untenable for workers. Government needs to legislate to change the gig economy and allow workers to transition to more secure, permanent jobs. Chris McCoomb Glass House Mountains

Joyce Mowing and Gardening would like to say a big thank you to all our loyal clients for their business over the past seven years. We have loved servicing so many beautiful lawns and gardens in the Glass House and Maleny areas during this time and wish to advise that our business has now been handed over to Steve trading as Clear Cut. Steve already knew many of our clients and their gardens, and we are so pleased to know that Steve will continue a high level of service. Steve can be contacted on 0428 161 100 or clearcut@gmail.com We have now relocated to Sally’s hometown in northern NSW. We have purchased an existing mowing and gardening business and we are settling into our next chapter. It was a huge step for us to leave the community of Peachester and surrounds and we thank everyone for their warm wishes and messages in the weeks before we left. Best wishes and “don’t let the grass grow under your feet”. Dan and Sally Joyce Kyogle
Unvaccinated people
THERE are people in the community who are unable to be vaccinated because of serious health conditions. Approval for vaccination of 5-11-yearolds is still pending, and no plan, as yet, for vaccination of babies. When borders are opened and life returns to normal, these vulnerable groups will be at risk with the unvaccinated moving about freely within the community. Some businesses and venues will place restrictions on the unvaccinated but these people will have access to most services and be free to move about in public places. Yes, vaccination opponents are exercising their right to choose but in doing so they are taking away the right of others to feel safe. The majority of these people would have been vaccinated as children
IT
against diphtheria, polio, tetanus, etc, thereby keeping them safe from these diseases, so maybe they should rethink their position on COVID vaccination. Name supplied Glass House Mountains
Lost ladies’ gold watch
ON Wednesday, October 13 my wife lost her gold wristwatch in the Beerwah Marketplace. The watch was a present from her late parents 64 years ago, so has great sentimental value. We shopped in Banjo’s Café, Woolworths, Amcal Chemist, Bargain Max and visited the toilets. If you find/found this watch, could you please contact me on e-mail tom_and_ esther@live.com.au or phone 0417 604 184. A reward is offered. Thank you. Tom Johnson Gympie
SOS our sportsground
When GC&M News recently put the call out to local residents to show their support for the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee, there was plenty of great feedback on the importance of the facility and what it provides for its users including this letter:
Attention CPR Group
My name is Peter Field, president of the Glasshouse Mountains Ulysses, and I am writing this letter on behalf of our branch to support the management committee of the Beerwah Sportsground. It is our venue for our major event of the year – the Valley Rally – plus we use it for coffee rides and campouts. For the past three years, we have held our Valley Rally at the Beerwah Sportsground in October as it is the perfect spot, central for everyone to attend plus the facilities and grounds are exactly what we require for our rally. It gives us plenty of room to camp and run our activities and it is always well maintained and cared for. The management committee and

caretakers always assist with the rally and make us feel very welcome. The Valley Rally is a weekend event of camping, show ‘n’ shine and gymkhana games, which bike groups attend from all over Queensland (this year as far as Bundaberg). It is a weekend of catching up with friends and making new friends and the sportsground is perfect. It brings people to the area making them aware of the sportsground and spending money in the local businesses. Our profits from the weekend go to a local charity – this year it was Aussie Farm Relief and in 2019 it was LifeFlight on the Sunshine Coast. Glasshouse Mountains Ulysses loves the Beerwah Sportsground. It is an essential camping and community activity area that we need!! Looking forward to many more events at the Beerwah Sportsground!!! Re: Big tree
I WOULD like to support Derek Browning’s view (GC&M News, October 12) that the very large fig tree opposite the Glass House State School has reach
the point of no return. It is only a fig tree. Not only is it a pest, if left the root system will continue to cause damage to the road and footpath, which will require ongoing maintenance to keep the road and the footpath in good order. I can also assure you that footpath will become a serious trip hazard in a very short space of time, if not already. It’s only a matter of time and this tree will fall down during a storm and anybody within close proximity when it does come down will be seriously injured or killed. So, it is my opinion that it should be removed by suitably qualified people sooner rather than later. Peter Bowles Glass House Mountains

RENEE Marie Leitch left us on August 22, 2021. Renee had been a longtime member of Landsborough Area Community Association Inc (LACA Inc), formerly Landsborough and District Progress Association, as well as many important committees that helped shape Landsborough including CAMCOS and the Landsborough Development Control Plan.
Renee was very active in the development of Morris House Neighbourhood Centre and when we received our first grant for computer equipment, she became our first computer tutor. Renee taught computers with us for many years and all her students loved her and gave her glowing feedback at the end of each course. She gave me a huge amount of help when I was still struggling with computers – back in the day when you needed 4MB of RAM to run Windows 3.1 on your computer. When LACA Inc organised the first William Landsborough days, we had a double decker bus in the park and Renee was the MC, broadcasting all the events and historical information to the town. She was really amazing and always so enthusiastic in everything she did – her church, Morris House and her business activities. We will all miss Renee and we are grateful for her friendship and for all she did for us and for her community. We send our thoughts and sympathies to Ken and Renee’s family. Sleep in peace Renee. ELECTED Vale Annette Brodie
ON October 8 we farewelled my friend Annette Brodie. Annette was a stalwart of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, of the Beerwah Charity Sports Day and of the LNP (Liberal National Party). You’ve heard of Charlie’s Angels? Well, alongside her friends Mavis, Marlene and Coral, we often joked that Annette was one of Andrew’s angels. Now she really is. Thank you Annette. We love you. We miss you.
17th NRL team
What a win for our region! Go the Dolphins –- the 17th NRL team! They may call the Moreton Bay region their home technically but the success of the bid was built on their reach into the Sunshine Coast and up into the South Burnett and Wide Bay. I’ve supported the Parramatta Eels all my life but no longer. I’ll be signing up with the Dolphins. A truly wonderful outcome for grassroots community sport across our region!

Vanilla and coffee
How good is this? Did you know that we have a vanilla and coffee farm right here in the hinterland? Keep an eye out for Vanilla Vine Sunshine Coast and Mt Mellum Gold Coffee. You must try their cold press coffee with a couple of shots of vanilla syrup. Unbelievable!

WITH the Sunshine Coast Mass Transit Options Analysis Report approved by the council at our recent special meeting, I’m pleased that this report will now progress to the state and federal governments for further investigation. While this doesn’t mean a decision to build a mass transit system has been made, it is very likely the work undertaken to prepare the options analysis will underpin and encourage the necessary investment required by relevant governments. As mentioned previously, regardless of the mode selected, any mass transit system will need to be supported by more bus services, improved routes and timetables, and better connections to reduce travel times to areas not directly serviced by mass transit, such as regional (heavy) rail in the CAMCOS corridor. Sincere thanks to the many residents who provided their thoughts on the future of public transport for our region, which has helped improve the overall options analysis report.
Welcome to Landsborough
I believe everyone will really like the new entry signage in Landsborough, created, handwritten and installed by local Landsborough resident Glenn of G&R Signs & Screenprints.
with Rick Baberowski
Division 1 Sunshine Coast Council Like the original, this new signage is a useful landmark as well as a friendly, welcoming entry statement. It takes advantage of the roofline lights and was delivered from our Landsborough Master Plan and ongoing placemaking project. Also in Landsborough, I’m pleased to report that the much-needed sports field drainage upgrades have been completed at Skippy Park. Come rain or hail, this Little As family-friendly space will work much better in wet weather, which is a big win for sporting groups in Landsborough and the surrounds.
Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards
There are just a few weeks left to nominate someone you know for a Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award. There are seven categories to choose from including youth, environment, sport, creative, citizen and senior citizen of the year, and community group or organisation. Nominating is easy. Simply head to council’s website and search for the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards. Hurry, nominations close November 4.

Approaching loss and grief workshop LEIGH Donovan, a consultant in thanatology – the discipline that studies death, grief and loss – is collaborating with Maleny-based group Tying Up Loose Ends (TULE) to deliver a workshop on Sunday, October 31 from 10am–2pm at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Community members are invited to attend the workshop, which aims to gently explore ways of approaching loss and grief. Questions on the day might include: • How to live life in a way that means preparing for our own death, whenever that may be, and how life might look different if we chose this path?
• How conversations around our own mortality can become enablers when tending to our own grief and that of others? • How can we gain confidence in leaning into our own grief and into the grief of those around us? The workshop is for those grieving the loss of someone or something deeply meaningful to them and seeking a place of solace, or those seeking a conversation on how to meaningfully walk alongside someone close in their grief. The cost is $50, with morning tea provided, bring your own lunch. For more details phone 0409 470 822. To book go to www.trybooking.com/BUIBS

Early detection of breast cancer is saving local lives THE spotlight has been shone on breast cancer, the most common cancer affecting women in Australia, during October. Thankfully, there have been significant advances in early detection and treatment of the disease, leading to improved outcomes for women. Cancer screening programs, such as BreastScreen Queensland, increase the likelihood of detecting cancer at the earliest stage (stage one), which means a five-year survival rate of close to 100 per cent. A recent Australian Institute of Health and Welfare study demonstrated the benefits of breast screening. It found more than half of breast cancers detected by BreastScreen were small, which meant they tended to be associated with more treatment options and improved survival rates. Trish, a 53-year-old Sunshine Coast local, was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year following a routine mammogram. She had surgery to remove the cancerous lump and is now halfway through radiation treatment. She said it was early detection that could have saved her life. “During surgery it was discovered
that the cancer had also spread into my lymph nodes. If I had let it go, it could have travelled even further around my body,” Trish said. “Because the cancer was caught in the early stages the nurses said I was lucky. I will get through all of this and live a long and healthy life but I know other people aren’t as lucky. “Go and get checked. Breast screening is really quick – you’re in and you’re out. Yes, it can be uncomfortable but the earlier something is detected, the better the result, and all of the healthcare staff were really supportive, friendly and caring, and they make it a lot easier,” Trish said. BreastScreen Queensland has services in Caboolture, Caloundra, Gympie, Maroochydore, Nambour and Noosaville with early, late and Saturday appointments available. The BreastScreen mobile van will be outside the Beerwah Community Hall from November 11-December 10. BreastScreen is free and available to women aged 40 years and over who have no breast symptoms. For more information or to make an appointment with BreastScreen Queensland visit www.breastscreen.qld. gov.au or call 13 20 50.

Jobs for the yard in November
• When your spring flowering bulbs such as jonquils and daffodils have died down, lift out the bulbs, clean off the dirt and store them in a dry, dark place. • Propagate daylilies from any plantlets that have developed along the flower stalks. Just plant them into a pot of quality potting mix and wait for them to grow. • Rains and warm temperatures will see a big increase in grasshopper and caterpillar numbers in the garden. Pick them off and squash them or use a pyrethrum or bacteria-based spray. • Time to prune your azaleas and dead-head roses to encourage continual flowering.
• Zucchinis may be showing powdery mildew (a fungal disease) on their leaves. Spray with mancozeb or try the one part milk to ten parts water technique. • Keep an eye out for bronze/orange bugs on your citrus. Knock them off and squash them or spray with Yates citrus and ornamental spray. • Fruit flies will start to appear. Keep them at bay by cleaning up rotten old fruits and using a splash bait such as eco-naturalure.
• Prune back grevilleas by a third to promote bushiness. • Prune wisteria, jasmine and other vigorous climbers when they finish flowering. • It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Keep spraying your developing mangoes with mancozeb to prevent the disease anthracnose. • Asparagus will be finishing the spring harvest and the bed will now be full of ferny fronds. Keep the plants well mulched and watered to keep the fronds actively growing as this will feed the crown for the following year. • Summer prune mulberry for a second fruit crop. Cut back new growth by a third. • Keep the water up to hydrangeas as they develop new buds so you have lovely full flowers. • If you need to, top dress the lawn now. Don’t cover the lawn too deep or too completely. It’s better to do a couple of light coverings a month apart. • Keep nipping off gardenia flowers once they have died to promote more flowers. Avoid fertilising while flowering and keep them well watered.

There was a lot of rain about that afternoon, so it probably washed the chalk from the board. Friday, October 15: More rain, enough to draw the Caloundra club’s visit to an early close. Sally Adams, Sarah, Wallace, Vince and Val packed up in the rain. Sunday, October 17: This cryptic report of Sunday’s play against Val by was made by Vince: “Only one game was played this afternoon, with V playing V, and V winning 26 to 3, pegging out in less than 100 minutes. At the end of play, one V was exhausted from so much time on the lawn. The other V learnt a lot by watching the master class on display. The exhausted one has recovered and she is feeling much better.” Play days are Thursdays and Sundays. The start time has changed because of hotter weather and is now 2pm for a 2.30pm start. Contact Sarah for other days. Coaching is available on Saturdays at 8am. For details contact president Sarah Widin on 0417 640 704 or vice president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193. www.rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au

Contributed by Ken Barker Sunday, October 10: In near perfect playing conditions Sarah Widin had a good game against Vince Carbery beating him 21–11. A doubles game between a team of Helen Andrews and Lynette Evans had a narrow loss to Stuart Craig and Val Carbery 8–12. Monday, October 11: Vince, Val, Sarah, Wallace Roy, Nick Cram and Kath Smith descended from the mountain to play in the Headland Buderim Golden Oldies tournament. Bisques (free shots) are given for age. Over 70s have one bisque, 75 two, 80 three and so on. Bill Bray, formerly from the Nambour club who was 98 when he passed away and a formidable opponent without bisques, used to regularly win this delightful event. Anyone over 65, the lower age limit, should have a go at it. Our players all had a good time with Val playing well to nearly win in block three and Wallace going one better to win block four. Many thanks to Carolyn Aldrich and the Headland Buderim Club for organising this event. Thursday, October 14: Lynette Evans, Sarah and Wallace enjoyed an afternoon with the lawn to themselves, playing a six-ball game with no result recorded.

Friday, October 15: Whistlers were rained out. Wednesday, October 20: Witta Wagtails played against Maroochydore Sapphires, our last match for this season. Maleny Bowls Club

Trevor McLean and friends playing social bowls We’ve had lots of people playing bowls during the last couple of weeks, with two parties playing social bowls on Fridays. More than 40 players have been turning up on a Wednesday night and up to 20 come to play on Tuesdays and Fridays. We also had 15 new bowlers come along on Sunday for our free ‘Come and Try’ day. The beginners enjoyed the challenge and the barbecue and will be back for more. On Wednesday nights most teams have won at least one game. With one team having won all of their five games for the season so far. The teams that have won their last two games are the Three Flamingos, Oblimeys, RPT, and the Mighty 10s. In bowls, consistency usually pays dividends. However, the JAM team has
been consistently losing and thus has no dividends to show for it. At Scroungers on Fridays each player gets a handicap according to their abilities and form. Anyone can win. Recent winners have been Dave Robson, Marilyn Podmore, Sally Squires, Joe Walters, Mo Lawrence, Steve Lawrence, Dick Coppa and Mick Bulger. We also give away chocolates to players who score maximum points on an end and to those who touch the jack with their bowl. The recent rain hasn’t stopped us playing. Often it seems to skirt around the bowls club particularly on Wednesday nights, so we consider ourselves fortunate. The weather is not so cool at night-time now and the ratio of beanies to heads has changed considerably.

There’s a sensual feeling to the start of the week that makes love an easier affair. Whether it’s your relaxed attitude or your popularity that betters your mood, it doesn’t matter. Each of these qualities will enhance the other. This is a cycle you certainly won’t want to break. There’s also a chance of finding a karmically-linked soul.
One particular project rules this week. Sagittarians seek broader horizons through knowledge or meditation. Ideas become more intense as your spiritual and intellectual awareness deepens. Others will recognise these special talents. In turn, their assistance boosts a past slump in confidence and cash flow.
Whether you’re working in the office or at home, new ideas blaze a fiery trail. At home, your love life is set for a breakthrough. Indeed, this week finds many Capricorns cosmically charged with a renewed surge of satisfaction. The time’s right to start turning long-standing dreams into reality. Singles may even meet a new love.
Forgive and forget Aquarius. What’s done is done and no amount of hostility can change things. If someone waves the white flag – or offers sympathy – accept with gratitude. Likewise for an unexpected invitation. One pleasant diversion can often lead to another. No surprises then if love comes by way of a mutual friend.
Certain realisations can take time to dawn on us. Tell-tale signs often come in the form of a project or relationship that’s lost its appeal. The question is: are you really interested anymore? If you feel like letting your game drop, maybe it’s for good reason. The planets encourage you to stop and take stock. Clear your head Pisces.
Start collecting property listings Aries. Looks like a house move is in your future and you’re primed to make this new living space extra intriguing. But when it comes to relationships it’s looking unsteady. Some are wondering if they might be better off alone. Where money is concerned, don’t spend what you can’t afford.
You’re very chatty this week – so unlike you Taurus. Excited thoughts race around your mind and you can’t wait to share them with anyone who happens to be around. Right now it also seems you’re back in touch with every friend or colleague on the planet. Some Taureans could end the week with a fair share of love and luxuries.
You’re entitled to be proud of your resilience Gemini as you’ve come through a difficult time. Now comes the irresistible urge for something new. This week’s changes release reserves of inner power – a perfect time for the real you to shine through. If a constricting job or relationship is holding you back, this could be the time to break free.
Too many demands have drained the Cancerian spirit recently. No wonder you’ve scuttled back into your shell. Take heart, my friend. What lies ahead? A growing self-confidence and an equally expanding income. For some, this may relate to professional matters. Others look to resolve a mystery. An ‘aha’ moment sheds light.
When reality doesn’t fit with your expectations, you might feel tempted to blame others. One thing’s for sure, we all see things in different ways – and few of us have the power to read each other’s minds. Spell your thoughts out more clearly next time and, if necessary, compromise. Forgive too.
Mars rules your financial sector Parental figures, friends or siblings feature prominently in your chart at present – and it’s high time. For whatever reason, you haven’t paid enough attention to the people who are capable of helping you the most, but your future life and career may depend on you making peace with the past. Listen to their points of view with respect.
While your Libran composure usually keeps you out of trouble, less sensible minds seem determined to stay on a collision course. So, again, you may have to clean up after others. Recently, too, you’ve been more insular. Later this week emotional barriers start to fall and you once again share your love.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
This week enables enterprising Scorpios to make the best of negotiating skills. There’s a strong emphasis on money and property. The days ahead also bring a crucial emotional crunch. For a while you’ve been battling with difficult restrictions. You’ve worn them well. By late week, there may even be a happy surprise.
It seems that what you most want at this time, you can’t have – that proverbial “forbidden fruit”. Or you still might go for it despite knowing that you’re making a bad choice and for all the wrong reasons. It seems you want instant gratification Sagittarius – despite all the warning signs. Expect consequences.
Decide every day to accept, or at least acknowledge, what life throws at you. Stay strong. Despite any punishing demands you’re much braver than you realise. Even the most difficult of dramas can be enlightening once through it. So calm your fears Capricorn, then walk through any challenge. Not around it but through it.
Aquarians are well known for voicing their views. Some admire this confidence while others find it annoying. Any opposition just fuels your strong-mindedness – especially if you’re convinced that you’re right. Truth is: middle ground can be found. Stay flexible and accommodate others’ needs as well as your own.
Think twice before saying anything in the heat of the moment or you may regret it. Yes, these are difficult times but remember we’re all in this together. It’s at home that you’re particularly restless. Pisceans who manage to get out and relax regularly fare better. It’s the home-bound that are having a particularly hard time.
This week brings a growing awareness of your special talents and unhappy conditions are no longer tolerated. Just don’t assume total authority on every topic at hand. It’s a sure bet that someone with more knowledge will eventually call you to question. In the meantime, bank balances need to stay healthy.
You’re ready for enchantment and a whole lot more excitement. Fortunately, the cosmos agrees. With many of your zodiac neighbours still struggling, there are very few people around to disrupt your plans. Take this time to strengthen work strategies. New friendships also appear promising, as do financial prospects.
Problems have a knack of building in intensity right up to the point of no return. You’re not your usual easy-going self this week, edging more towards feeling frustrated or annoyed. Mostly you’ll stay patient but we all get a little battle worn at times. Do yourself a favour – withdraw from conflict if you can. Regroup and recoup.
Feeling tired? Little wonder Cancer. It’s been a challenging time with much stress and little rest. You can’t keep burning the candle at both ends and then be surprised when the flame burns out. Take this week to nurture yourself. Find somewhere quiet and pamper. You can only help others if you first help yourself.
The cosmos advises against compromise this week for good reason. Being pushed into not-so-satisfactory situations or having to take the blame because of someone else’s mistakes is not acceptable. The cosmos helps those who help themselves, so stand your ground and make your thoughts heard.
You may feel like you’re being pulled in many different directions. Perhaps a friend or loved one has a tad too much to say or they’ll try to deceive you. Don’t be fooled by false promises. Think about what it is you want for a change, take charge and ditch those who don’t support you. Take control of your life.
With stress and uncertainty heaving you here, there and everywhere – you’ve a right to feel confused. One minute you’re up, the next down. If doubt invades your confidence, remember your very unique talents and strengths. Unleash all that amazing creativity. You may even stumble across a new hobby or career path.

couldn’t be happier for you both.” Then he said: “There’s more…” “What do you mean ‘more’?” I asked. “Well, we are not having just one baby. We are going to have TWINS!” he said. Amazed at how he could know so soon after getting pregnant, I asked him how he knew. “Well, that was the easy part,” he said. “When we went to Woolworths, they actually had a home pregnancy kit in a twin-pack. Both tests came out positive!”

MY neighbour came running up to me in the driveway jumping for joy. I didn’t know why he was jumping for joy but I thought, what the heck, and started jumping up and down with him . “I have some really great news,” he said. “Great. Tell me why you’re so happy,” I said. He stopped jumping and, breathing heavily from all the jumping up and down, told me that his wife was pregnant. I knew they had been trying for a while so I said: “That’s great! I
