Hi Everyone
A
s it rained all day Friday and then throughout the night I hadn’t held out positive thoughts for the annual Beerwah Charity Sports Day last Saturday. I got up early and checked Facebook and was pleased to see that the sun was shining at the Beerwah Sportsground and it was full steam ahead. The organising committee and volunteers of this annual event do an amazing job each year bringing it together and all in the name of raising funds for the Cancer Council. When we arrived I couldn’t say that the sun was beating down, but it definitely wasn’t raining which was great, as you can imagine it isn’t always easy to get six photos of smiling people in raincoats and under umbrellas. For the car enthusiasts there was plenty to photograph at the Show and Shine and for someone like me who just likes groovy shining things I found a lovely red 1950s Studebaker – which I could see myself cruising around in, and I got a photo of the car and the proud owner. When you get to page 32 you can check it out, along with just a small selection of highlights from the day. Regards,

Local News Ag students excel Glasshouse Christian College Agricultural Science student Dakotah Davis has won the highest award in the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Hermitage Research Facility Schools' Plant Science Competition. The Year 11 student took out the Paul Jonston Memorial Senior Science Award. This entitles Dakotah to a $1,000 part scholarship for resources for her first year of tertiary education, a medallion and a certificate. Not one to rest on her laurels, Dakotah also won a scholarship to attend TASTE 2015 camp and a subscription to an art and science magazine. Dakotah’s fellow GCC Agricultural Science students also did the College proud. Madeline Kinsely collected her first prize for the Year 12 category of Art in Agriculture with Taylor Olsen coming in as runner-up.
Thomas Chapman collected his runner-up prizes for the Year 11 Art in Agriculture category. The students travelled to Warwick to receive their awards. GCC’s Head of Agricultural Science Jade King said it was the best educational excursion yet. “It was inspiring to see the students do so well especially as the Ag Science program only began last year,” she said. Following the awards ceremony, students were shown around the research station by leading scientists before exploring career pathways in Agricultural Science. They spent the afternoon enjoying farm experiences and sitting in on a forum on using science and light to feed the world. Before returning to Beerwah, the GCC students took a guided tour through the Poultry Centre at UQ Gatton campus to learn about research in poultry science and nutrition.

It is expected operations will start at the Bells Creek interim site within weeks. Divisional Councillor Rick Baberowski said the interim area will be used by the helicopter
operator as an alternative location for most of the helicopter training program currently carried out at or around Caloundra aerodrome. Cr Baberowski said the satellite training facility on land owned by Stockland had been made available until December 2015 with an option to extend this to December 2016. “We still need the State Government to provide a permanent satellite site in our region,” Cr Baberowski said.
Flashing lights petition for Peachester As part of his commitment to fight for the needs of the Glass House community, Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP has lent his support to a petition demanding flashing school warning lights for Peachester State School. “These lights are particularly important for an area like Peachester that has a lot of ‘just passing through’ tourist traffic. It is these motorists that are not aware of the school zone and therefore may not be as vigilant in slowing down,” Mr Powell said. Mr Powell is working with the Peachester P&C to gather signatures for a petition that will show the government how much community support exists to see these lights delivered. “Flashing lights act as a reminder to drivers that they need to be on alert. We know children are by nature unpredictable and may not be concentrating when they approach the streets or roads next to school areas,” he said.
Mr Powell will have a stall set up at the Peachester Family Fun Day on September 5 so come along and add your name to the petition. You can also support the online petition by visiting the Parliament website – www. parliament.qld.gov.au and click on Get Involved.

Opposition to controversial road design After meeting with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) last Thursday, the Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest group were left wondering if the growing community opposition will be enough to convince the new TMR Project Director to re-visit the parameters for the controversial Bruce Highway / Caloundra Road interchange. According to group spokesperson Stella Wiggins, the design was originally drafted by the previous LNP government with parameters that are inconsistent with the present Labor government’s promised agenda to protect State Forest. “If approval is given by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, it will see the tenure for the 24 hectares of project footprint changed from State Forest to State Controlled Road,” she said. The project has seen a broad spectrum of Sunshine Coast residents unite in their efforts to have it changed. “The new TMR Project Director and his staff met with 13 of us – we represented a wide range of community interests and experiences,” continued Stella. “At this stage, we seem to be stuck with TMR’s ‘reference design’ that none of the community wants. The Bruce Highway needs to be upgraded, but this current design for the Caloundra Road Interchange uses a ludicrous roundabout west of Mooloolah cemetery. “This means that a new road will be pushed *Excludes sale items through the forest behind the cemetery,

destroying 24 hectares and impacting 100 more through fragmentation and edge effect. “This State Forest was on track to become a National Park because of its high conservation value. “We need a better road design that does not cut through the forest. We must not only save this forest but reconnect it to the Mooloolah River with effective wildlife movement structures." Meghan Halverson, President of Queensland Koala Crusaders Inc., also attended the meeting and shared her views that the plans were not appropriate. “Current and past government policies to protect koalas have been unsustainable,” said Meghan. “If we do not seriously protect habitat and look at smarter ways to maintain old growth forests such as at Steve Irwin Way, there will come a day where the only place to see koalas will be in zoos or sanctuaries. “The bottom line in the continued frenzy of economic growth and development and infrastructure priority for humans will lead us towards a polluted and crowded world with no reverence for the beauty of our natural world. If we cannot save an umbrella species such as the koala and the habitat that sustains them, then what hope is there for us all?” The interchange has also come under fire from local business owners and residents who will experience a significant increase in travel time and distance between the Bruce Highway and the Aussie World precinct or nearby residential areas, explains Wayne Reid from Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest group.
“The plan is a double-up road network: a high speed freeway and a complex network for local businesses and residents that creates a very inconvenient passage to anywhere,” he said. “Proponents of the current design defend it by saying it's the same as the design they have at Coomera on the Gold Coast. Do we want to be another Gold Coast? “In respect to the Labor government’s failure to follow through on promises to protect State Forest, if the Labor Ministers allow this Newman Government plan to proceed, it will be political suicide,” he said. With tenders for the construction and design package expected to go out later this year, Steve Amos, owner of the Aussie World Garage, is worried about the process. “I just hope a genuine solution can be found and I would like to see an adjustment to the ‘preferred plan’ to improve the impact on the rainforest as opposed to a guideline in a ‘scope of works’ document,” said Steve. The forest group is now calling on Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to intervene and hopes that if enough of the community contacts her or State Ministers Steven Miles (Environment) and Mark Bailey (Main Roads), the application to transform the forest into a road will not be approved. Anyone who would like more information is invited to contact the Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest Group via their website www.is.gd/savetheforest

Inspired by cricket master QCamel's in exhibition By Sonia Clark Peachester local Ashley Holznagel is a self confessed cricket fanatic. Last month he had the opportunity to fulfil a long held ambition to learn how to become a bat maker at a five day course held in the Yarra Valley, taught by former Australian test cricketer, Ian Callen. Ashley has been playing cricket since he was six-years-old. He has played for the Sunshine Coast Scorchers as well as being an assistant coach. He has also previously coached for Glasshouse District and is now head coach at the Sandgate /Redcliffe district cricket club. Ashley holding one of his To say that Ashley likes cricket is an handmade bats understatement. As part of his passion, Ashley has always wanted to make his own bats. Earlier this year an internet search for bat making courses put him onto the business that Susan Callen and her husband Ian Callen run on a property East of Melbourne. Ashley travelled down to Victoria to learn the craft with a handful of others from around Australia. The course that accredits bat makers, teaches the traditional method of handmaking cricket bats using traditional willow wood. The Callen family own a 20 acre forestry specialising in growing and processing English Willow (willow blue) that they established in 1994. The trees are now coming into maturity, and their boutique bat making business is flourishing. “It was a fantastic experience and now a bucket list item that I can tick off as I’ve always wanted to learn how to make cricket bats,” said Ashley. “It was great to learn these unique skills from the master craftsman of batmaking.” Now as an accredited bat maker himself, under the moniker of Lincoln Custom Cricket Bats, the Peachester local hopes that his hobby will one day eventually grow into a sustainable business.
Local Producer QCamel Dairy has been featured as part of a much larger photographic exhibition that launched in Sydney on August 18. Commissioned by the South Australian Beerenberg Family Farm, QCamel Dairy was one of 11 Australian producers, selected to celebrate rural food provenance in Australia. The Honesty Box exhibition takes its name from the sale of produce commonly practiced in farming communities around Australia, whereby donations are left in exchange for produce. At the Sydney venue, an honesty box was placed with funds from the sale of the photography donated to the Aussie Farmers Foundation - which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people living in rural and regional communities. The exhibition highlighted the innovation, dedication, heritage and community of farms and producers nation-wide through compelling imagery. Three Australian photographers were commissioned to travel the country to find inspiring provenance stories and tell them through this imagery. The resulting body of photography captures the spirit of the people, the produce and the landscape, from these distinctive Australian farms. The photography reflects the beauty and local charm of some of Australia’s most unique food provenance stories, including our local Q Camel Dairy. Based at Glass House Mountains, the farm owned and run by the Brisbane family is the only pasteurised camel milk producer in Australia. The exhibition photos reflect the unique beauty and charm of their farm that provides camel milk - which has a myriad of health benefits. This 'white gold’ milk is produced by a herd of much-loved camels at what is the first camel dairy on the east coast of Australia.

Tony Abbott has got it all wrong on Renewable Energy adapted from The Sydney Morning Herald, June 13 The Prime Minister's scathing comments on wind-farms and renewable energy put him out of step with the way the world is moving. In the same week, two things happened in Australia. The Abbott government's Environment Minister Greg Hunt envisaged Australia joining the same historic transition: "I believe it's not only possible but likely that Australia will achieve zero-emissions energy by the end of the century." And the leader of the Abbott government struck precisely the opposite stance. He appeared to stand in direct opposition to the threshold event of our time. The former Liberal leader, economist John Hewson, who once employed Abbott as his press secretary, says that Abbott's comments were "ignorant and irresponsible". Hewson these days works on so-called ‘stranded assets’ … energy assets like coal mines that risk becoming uneconomic as the market and regulation moves against them. A group of the seven biggest developed nations in the world declared that the world needed to phase out fossil fuel emissions by the end of this century. In contrast to his Australian cohort however, India's Energy Minister Piyush Goyal has shown vision and flair. His task is to revamp the current network while
delivering electricity to the more than 300 million people living beyond the reach of the grid; and it requires more than the odd tweak. Ironically, the government of India, from where Adani hails, is to open its energy market to US dollar investment in solar. This past week the former chartered accountant and banker proposed a spectacular financial innovation: underwriting solar power purchase agreements (PPA) in $US terms, rather than rupees. Meanwhile, in China, which leads the world in hydro energy (already three times the capacity of the US), authorities announced a 20 per cent upgrade to the solar installation target. Instead of encouraging renewables in Australia however, the government has cut the renewable energy target (RET) and is attempting to axe the profitable Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), the very body which could ‘do a Goyal’ and finance big renewable projects with international capital near the government bond rate – and return profits to government to boot. Renewables, with their high upfront costs, create more jobs than coal, and require far less capital once up and running, yet Tony Abbott’s renewable energy policy remains stubbornly 20th century.

Proud to be a Druid Yvonne Hortin is proud to say that she is a Druid, and the Glass House Mountains local is keen to raise community awareness of this ancient inspired spirituality that is grounded in nature. The teachings of Druidry are founded in the power of ancient traditions that celebrate and observe the inherent wisdom in nature. Modern Druidism is a spirituality that unites a love of the earth with creativity and the arts. Yvonne is a registered nurse currently working in aged care. She also runs a natural therapy business and has previously authored the book ‘Natural Tranquillity in the Glasshouse Mountains.’Growing up on the land, Yvonne has a deep affinity with nature and all living creatures. She was drawn to Druidism because of its holistic approach to spirituality that was inclusive and based on a love for the earth and divine inspiration. Druidism means different things to different people and its philosophy can be incorporated with a persons’ own belief system, be it for example Christian, Buddhist or Pagan. “Druidism has allowed me to have a more positive outlook on life. It has made me more appreciative of a natural way of living and has made me more aware of the present,” said Yvonne. Over the years, Yvonne has done a number of trips to the UK where her interest in Druidry was reignited - especially as it is seen as a fairly acceptable and commonplace interest. Two years ago, Yvonne started studying the ‘Bardic Course’ which through the ‘Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids’ based in the UK, allows study of the three traditional areas of Druidic practice.
Hinterland Property
By Sonia Clark
Each course takes a year and a day to complete and involves four booklets per month sent out to students which offer instructions, practical tasks and spoken practice. Yvonne Hortin is The Bardic course offers proud to identify with the basis of Druidry being a Druid and incorporates understandings of elements and seasons along with poetic tasks – as in ancient times knowledge was passed on from Bard to Bard often through poetry. Once completed, students can apply to learn the Ovates course which includes the healing arts through the realms of past, present and future. Finally, the Druid course studies more about wisdom and spirituality. Yvonne is keen to meet others who are likeminded, and recently has established an informal monthly ‘Bardic Gathering’. It’s held at the Sacred Tree Cafe (19 Caloundra Street Landsborough) on the first Saturday of each month from 10.30am - 12.30pm. The next meeting will be Saturday, September 6. Attendees can come along and orate poetry, tell a story, or just meet up with others who share a common interest. “Druidry has changed my life. I’m more at peace with myself and live more in the present. It has brought out the creative spirit in me,” said Yvonne. If you would like to find out more, Yvonne can be contacted on 0429 939 120 or www.nt2012.com.au

Three locally-made films about Dementia will be screened on Saturday, September 19 in the Maleny Community Centre as part of a program of short films entitled ‘Lifetime Stories on Film’. The two-hour program begins at 2.30pm with an introduction by Sydney film archivist Susanne Haydon, previously manager of the Maleny Film Society and initiator of the ‘Maleny Makes Movies’ program almost a decade ago. The three local films, by Christine Elcoate, Jess Begun and Jill Morris, all members of the Maleny Film Cooperative, take very different approaches to a vital topic, with original scripts sparked by a RADF grant from the Sunshine Coast Council. Over several years, members of the co-op have completed more than 15 films on issues of community concern, including local history, environmental weeds, bushfoods - and now dementia. Jill Morris’s film made with Glenn Todd, ‘Solongaswebothshalllive’ examines how Alzheimer’s affects an enduring love after 50 years of marriage. In six minutes and with minimal dialogue, three local actors perform a love story using words in a Scrabble game and music performed by local pianist Ian Aitken. The setting is the Blackall Range Care Group cottage at Flaxton. Music and art as stimulus for sufferers of dementia is the basis of film-maker Jess Begun’s six-minute photographic poem about Maryborough artist Kaye and her 96-year-old mother. The title ‘There’s a Dog in the Closet’ refers to Kaye’s mum’s daily artwork created with a background of music, artworks holding secrets and meticulously signed. This film is a reminder of the day-to-day self-sacrificing commitment of thousands of carers, the hidden exhausted shadows behind all sufferers of dementia. A survey of five years ago established that there are 65,000 sufferers of Younger Onset Dementia (YOD), said visual artist Christine Elcoate, whose film is entitled ‘Living in the Moment’. Christine’s friend Janette, a 53 year-old sufferer of YOD, deteriorated so rapidly that she is represented in the film by local actress Rainee Skinner of Maroochydore. The film sets out to show how Janette fills her days, interspersed with a visual poem of how she feels about her new direction in life with YOD. Janette is seen with singers at Lift gallery, Balmoral. The matinee includes other short films from Griffith University and Sydney’s Young at Heart festival, as well as the 78 minute documentary from the US, Alive Inside - A Story of Music and Memory, demonstrating the use of personalised music to help dementia sufferers. Share in the peace of Maleny
Local Community Arts Organisation, Art4Place, would like to invite the public to the opening of the 'Peace in the Trees' sculptural walk on the new Maleny Precinct, at the back of the Riverside Centre, on Wednesday, September 2 at 4.00pm. ‘Peace in the Trees’ is a culmination of a long term project which they began in 2012, with at least a dozen local artists, under the guidance of the late Craig Medson, creating sandstone sculptures based on the theme ‘Peace’. The sculptures, some incomplete, were located temporarily on private land. All works have now been relocated to the Riverside end of the new Precinct, thanks to support from many local volunteer bodies and the local council. The project was recently able to be completed with council funding to employ Wayne Markwort, another eminent local sculptor. The installation is meant to encourage walkers to stop for a moment, enjoy the sculptures, read the inscriptions and contemplate ‘Peace’ as they continue their walk amongst the trees planted along the river bank. The Art4Place group would love other locals to join them to celebrate the occasion.

Raine & Horne on the door For more than three decades the name ‘Laurie Evans’ has been synonymous with excellent real estate service in the local area, with many hinterland residents having purchased more than one property through them and more than one generation of families. Laurie and his team were known for their strong local knowledge, good personalised country Raine & Horne Business service, and making sure their clients were satisfied Development Manager, with their results. And if you have driven past their David Bennett with office in Simpson Street, Beerwah since last Friday Rod Bowden, Principal you will have noticed that the name on the door has Beerwah Office changed to Raine & Horne. Owners Rod Bowden and Yara Bernardes purchased the long-time local business eighteen months ago and since then they have focused their attention on understanding how the local market works and how to continue to evolve the business for the ever changing real estate industry into the future. Rod explained that while the name may have changed, they have ensured that they will still keep their local commitment and country style service, and the new systems will enhance their business. “Raine & Horne are a company that has been established for 133 years and is still run by the same family, they are a leader in their field with a very solid reputation and we are really pleased to be becoming part of their organisation,” he said. In setting the businesses path into the future they believe that being part of Raine & Horne will offer their business, and in turn their clients, real benefits … including for their staff, who will have access to the best training and skills development. They will also be part of a company that has global reach through their national and international businesses through their databases that are continually updated. “These days the number of people who are buying property from other parts of the country or even outside of the country – often sight unseen – has significantly increased, so this gives our sellers access to many more potential buyers,” Rod said.
Maleny Commerce Update With Spencer Shaw
Spring is upon us and the delightful aromas of the Blackall Range’s culinary diversity are in the air for the Range Restaurant and Cafe Awards 2015. This annual event which is a joint event run by Maleny Commerce, Montville Chamber of Commerce and Hinterland Tourism, celebrates the quality of our cafes and restaurants and the contribution they bring to our culture and community. You’ve got until September 7 to vote for your favourites and give them the recognition they deserve. The winners will be announced at the Real Food Festival which is on September 13 and 14. This year’s Real Food Festival is shaping up to be best yet, so make sure you pencil that into your diaries now! Our August Networking Breakfast was another great event with plenty to discuss, from the Maleny Trail, Maleny Golf Club opening, Range Restaurant and Cafe Awards, Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Awards, Chamber Advantage and much more. Rod Richards presented on the Queensland Government Small Business Solutions program, Deborah Swane and Sven Svengali brought us up to speed with their new event for Maleny - Knitfest - and our great local MP Andrew Powell provided an update and discussion that included traffic and weed control in and around Maleny. Thank you to Chris, Jodi and team from Pomodoras on Obi Restaurant and Cabins for the tasty breakfast and great venue. Thanks to Nicole Hilton for the photos. Thanks to all who attended this networking event for Maleny Commerce, your Chamber of Commerce. next event is yet to be confirmed but check out our website for booking towards the end of August. Thanks to all the businesses who have been taking on the message of keeping main street parking for customers only, it’s a great way to keep business in our town. Main street parking is crucial in allowing our community and our customers access to our retail premises and it’s great to see businesses supporting this message.

From tables to old tools
Contributed by John Jennings Busy members of the Beerwah-based Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed were very happy with the result of their second garage sale from their 'new' premises on Peachester Road. According to the group, the success of the sale could be gauged by the small number of unsold goods fitting into two wheelbarrows. Everything from a dining table and chairs to a selection of tools and garden equipment attracted a steady stream of visitors, many of whom stopped for a sausage sizzle and came away with a bargain. The club’s tempo had increased significantly this week with preparations for the well-stocked garage sale on Saturday at their recently established site, part of the Glasshouse Country Care Centre at 352 Peachester Road, Beerwah. The group has been overwhelmed with community support, resulting in the variety of surplus goods for sale, with proceeds going to charity. Members had been busy in recent months with an emphasis on renovating items such as mowers and whipper-snippers plus a range of donated garden and handyman tools. Other members were keeping a proud eye on their first-ever vegetable garden with its prolific growth in waist-high timber garden beds under protective insect netting. The garden effort was supported with a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council. Results from the garden will first go to member’s families with any extra for Glasshouse Country Care. The Men’s Shed group, first set up in 2009 at the Beerwah Recycling Centre in Roberts Road, relocated last year to a custom-built shed in the Peachester Road complex and meets there each Wednesday.

Introducing Kristie-Lea Mole, your local IGA Beerwah Systems Operator Kristie-Lea has been with IGA in Beerwah for 13 years. What was meant to be an after school job for some extra pocket money has now turned into a career. “I love that we are a small country town and that everyone knows everyone else, also we have such a great team here it’s more like a family and coming to work feels like home,” she said. As Systems Operator, Kristie-Lea is in charge of producing all the ‘specials’ ticketing, hanging them up and making sure that all prices match the catalogue. On a weekly basis the store can generate between 5,000 and 6,000 specials, though it varies from week to week. Two days a week she is assisted by other staff members. As well as scanning, Kristie-Lea orders what are termed the ‘directs’. Different to standard stock lines, these items are the more unusual and gourmet items like what customers see on cooking shows. In a few weeks time the store will be showcasing a new gourmet section featuring local suppliers and gourmet brands including Organic and Gluten Free options.

It’s easy to look around our beautiful Glasshouse Country and feel that all is well in the world. Members of the Hinterland Welfare Network know too well that people can come upon tough times, often through a series of unfortunate circumstances, and find themselves needing basics like food and help with the bills. It’s comforting to know that the network exists. The group of community service organisations, which are largely volunteer run, meets once a quarter at Morris House in Landsborough to share information, keep up-to-date, network and to learn from guest speakers. Emergency relief in Glasshouse Country is mainly provided through small, volunteer run organisations like Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre, Morris House in Landsborough, and Mooloolah Community Centre. Food is donated by generous community members and organisations like the Anglican Foodbank (predominately made up of aging pensioners giving what they can) and Need a Feed in Beerburrum. Some of the organisations have a small budget to give grocery and petrol vouchers.

A delightful lunch was enjoyed with a beetroot and orange soup, surprising everyone. August 8 was the opening of the Nambour North Coast Division hall at Yandina by state president Robyn McFarlane, which our members attended. The handicraft and knitting and crochet finals at Maroochydore showed us all how talented some ladies are. Cath and Jo received seconds and high achievement. Well done ladies. On our way home we stopped at Beerwah CWA and enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea to celebrate QCWA’s 93rd birthday. The first meeting for the division was held in the lovely renovated post office in Yandina. We will be going to divisional meetings there from now on. Our next markets are on Saturday, August 29 with the Peachester Fire Brigade serving food. Please patronise them. On October 16 is our 70th birthday and we shall be having a party in the Peachester Hall. If anyone has any photos, craft or memorabilia, please phone me on 5494 9775.

Join local author Mark Postle and uncover your natural strengths and weaknesses and find out how to make the most of them. Friday, September 25, from 10.00am – 11.30am. Bookings essential. • Meet exhibiting artist Fiona Groom as she paints in situ. Fiona’s goal for her art is simple, ‘Share what I love with all who want to see it, improve, experience and grow.’ Thursday, September 10, 10.00am – 1.00pm. No bookings required. • Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day – Piratey stories and craft for young children. Come dressed as your favourite pirate. There will be tall tales of fearless pirates, chests of gold and talkative parrots. Followed by piratey craft. Thursday, September 17, 9.30am -10.30am. No bookings required. Maleny Library staff picks for great Spring Reads • Dianne - One life: my mother’s story by Kate Grenville. A heart-warming biography of Kate Grenville’s mother, Nance Gee. From childhood years of separation from family, to a disappointing marriage that ended in divorce, Nance’s resilience and strength of character enabled her to study and work as a pharmacist, and to overcome challenges facing a career woman in the 1940s -1950s. A great read for biography lovers! • Jenni - Four Letters of Love by Niall Williams. This Irish author’s beautiful lyrical writing moved me to tears at times. It’s a quirky, uplifting story about having faith, seizing the moment and following your heart, no matter what the consequences. But be warned, some may find its ending unsatisfying (if you’re looking for the usual fairy tale ‘happy ever after’ that is). • Caroline – In and out of Paris: gardens of secret delights by Zahid Sardar. This beautiful coffee table book has images of the public parks of Paris. The images inspire you to design your own garden Parisienne style, or to travel to see for yourself. This is one of those books which truly make you thankful to work at the library!
Rotary Update
Contributed by George McKenzie At this month’s meeting of the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains the District Governor John Leddy and his wife Barbara attended. John gave a rundown on club activities in District 9600, and Barbara spoke on her project for the year called ‘Humming Bird House’. It is a unique facility for children with terminal illness where families can be together in the final stage of the illness and receive assistance with caring for the children. Our club donated $500.00 to this project. Cathy Parker, Eamon Dunne and Pat Wagner, all from Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, were also in attendance. Cathy is the CEO of Cystic Fibrosis Queensland and she accepted a cheque from our club for $9,000.00 to go to research into this illness. The amount of research going into this is paying dividends, as not too many years ago life expectancy was only about 20 years. But now is up to the late 30s with newer treatments, so research is vital to beat this. Our club has been proud to raise money for many years to help Cystic Fibrosis children on the Sunshine Coast. Our next meeting is September 7 at the Beerwah Hotel 6.15pm for 6.45pm and our guest speaker will be Lea Parkes, Editor of Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. For more information contact Trevor Taylor on 0427 949 518 or George MacKenzie 5439 9371. Cathy Parker (CEO Cystic Fibrosis Qld), President Tony Long and District Governor John Leddy
Beerwah Writers Group
Contributed by Susan Usher At the last meeting there was much discussion about the anthology that will be the group’s major production for 2016. The option of it being a three part book was seen to be a good idea, including short stories, poems and longer stories between 2500 and 3000 words to be sent to the Secretary.Trevor suggested public feedback on the next book would be helpful. Neville is currently writing his second book of Bush Poetry ‘Tales from the Life I have Lived’ and during the meeting he read a draft of ‘Sunday School and Mucking About’. Bob gave a short rendition of his story ‘Jack and Sue: Love among the Macadamias’. Trevor’s first book can be purchased by phoning Susan on 0439 258 047. Maureen shared her family history story, and Tina read out chapter two from the novel she is working on. Ceridwyn requested feedback on the development and definition of the characters in her story. Trevor read his synopsis on ‘The Fatal Shore’ by Robert Hughes, portraying the convicts as people who formed the basis for our modern day nation. The group meets every second and fourth Friday of the month in the Beerwah Library Meeting Room for a 10.00am start. Join us! We’d love to have you. 2015 Charity Fishing Competition raises $4,081 Although a little windy, the weather stayed fine, giving fisherman a chance to spend the weekend trying to catch that one fish that would win them a $300.00 prize and raise money for the children's ward at Nambour General Hospital. One hundred and fifty entrants signed up for the competition this year … some to go fishing and others just for the chance to win one of the 60 random prizes with the ultimate prize of the one week holiday at Indian Head Fishing Units donated each year by Cliff and Pam Andreassen. Once again the Australian Army made the day possible by supplying and erecting the large tent at Club Glass House for the event to be held in. Each year the Army has been very generous in providing this facility. A very special thank you to Lt Colonel Slaughter and the men and women of the 7th Force Support Battalion, who always carry out their work in a professional manner. A huge thank you once again to our generous sponsors who sponsor this event each year and congratulations to all the lucky winners on the day.
The following businesses donated a minimum of $300.00 each to raise funds for this very worthy cause – Berrell’s Electrical, Arty Concreting, All Deisel Repairs and Services, Bassett Barks, Glasshouse Design and Manufacturing (GDM), Troy Cathcart (Builder), D & S Crane Hire, Beerwah Glasshouse Motel, Mark Ward (MWB Builder), Barra Jacks Kawana, Evakool, Bidmex on behalf of the Ken Campbell family, and XXXX. Thank you also to Ross and Anne Mckenzie, Beerwah Meats, Matilida Fruit Barn, PFD and Barry and Lynne Burgum who all donated towards the day. The Club Glass House Committee and the men and women who gave up their time on Sunday to come down and help set up and then pull down at the end of the day, your time and effort was very much appreciated. Final thanks go to Barry and Lynne Burgum, Adam and Denis Bochow, Matt Dragon, Danny Kowald and Kane Maley. Barry Bergum entertained the crowd on his guitar during the weigh in and was the MC on the day. His wife Lynne keeps the official records of all fish
Cliff Andreassen presenting winner Peter Young with his holiday prize weighed in and the winners of every prize. As always this was done with the upmost professionalism. You Said It NBN in Peachester
I'm writing to strongly support Ross Mcnab's letter (GC&MNews August 12) regarding the proposed partial closure of Old Peachester Road to make way for the proposed NBN tower. I for one use this road by foot, bicycle and motor vehicle. So do many others. Its future is bright given the opportunity to properly manage and utilise it as a recreational feature of the Peachester area. Its closure is not on, in my view, and I'll be quite happy to man the barricades to defend it staying open. Peter Gawith Peachester
Tower Lane – full story
Vodafone / Optus are about to install additional antennas on the water tower at Tower Lane. These new systems will increase the microwave radiation from this site by four times. It will have an estimated maximum output for this site of 19.52% of the current Australian standard. If these systems were in China, Russia, Italy or India it would be several times their standard. The Australian standard is considered by many scientists to be many years out of date. This addition does not require any approvals. The announcement for the new installations was advertised in the Range News. Details of the proposal can be reviewed at: www.rfnsa.com.au/4519004 This proposal is in addition to the Development Application by NBN for a 30 metre microwave tower on an adjacent property. More NBN towers for the region will be announced in the near future. Please review these proposals and join the NBN Information Session on August 27 to oppose increased levels of microwave radiation into the local area. Jim Straker Maleny

Thanks Glasshouse Country
What a marvellous day at the 2015 Beerwah Charity Sports! A very big thank you from the Committee for the tremendous community support. It is only because of the generous sponsors, the dedicated volunteer force and the enthusiasm of participants that we can put on a day like this. So, thanks to everyone for coming along and showing once again how the Glasshouse Country community supports a good cause. A special thanks to the Strongmen and Women for holding Round 3 of the Queensland Strongman Series at the Charity Sports. This added another dimension and generated a lot of interest. We hope to see them again next year. While the weather on Friday caused concern, Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day, and we are anticipating an excellent result for Cancer Council Queensland from the 2015 sports day! There will be photos and results following over the next couple of weeks. For now we just want to say thank you to all concerned for supporting the 44th Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival. Bruce Page Chairman, Charity Sports Committee
fibre cable, not with towers. Cable can offer (in NBN's words) up to 100Mbps while towers will offer only up to 25 Mbps, and in reality, less in normal operation. If you think the NBN rollout meeting is some sort of democratic process where in the meeting you get to input, you are sadly mistaken. The decisions have already been made as to sites and location; you just get to see nice photo-shoots and maps showing you where it’s going, and that’s it. I suggest you open it up to public questions in a meeting format with the NBN reps like Peachester residents did or you'll go home disappointed. Good luck. Richard Giles Conondale

NBN Beerwah
The notice in your last edition advertising a public meeting at Beerwah for the proposed NBN tower in Tower Lane near the Beerwah State School says it’s on at 3.00pm in the Beerwah Community Hall, Thursday, August 27. It refers to ‘High-Speed Broadband’ to provide access to ‘fast, affordable and reliable internet services’. The reality is you will probably not get ‘high-speed’ broadband with a reliable, affordable service through this wireless tower system. Conversations with people in areas who already have it (NSW and SEQLD) indicate it’s not high speed, it’s not reliable and the costs to you, compared to your previous providers before towers, goes up. Reliability - heavy rainfall, storms and cyclonic low systems will interfere with the signal. High-speed is what you get with

Are you getting the most out of your home loan? Most of us are busy working to pay off our biggest debt which is our mortgage and achieve the Aussie dream of being mortgage free. We set up our home loan and repayments and get on with life, but things do often change. Personal and financial circumstances are likely to change as life goes on and the mortgage you may have taken out years ago may not be the best choice for you now. We recommend that everyone should re-evaluate their home loan from time to time but especially when major changes happen in your life. Before you start your comparing, note down what is important to you and what your goals are. Here are a few suggestions to help you create your list: • Do you want personal service? Do you want to be able to pick up the phone when you have a question and speak to your lender? • Do you want a loan that has minimal ongoing fees?
• Do you want to be able to build up equity quicker by being able to pay weekly or fortnightly repayments rather than monthly repayments? • Are you thinking of buying and selling in the near future? If so you want to make sure you find a lender that does not charge you fees or penalties for paying your loan off sooner. Our number one tip is to always check the comparison rate as it includes both the interest rate and other costs such as establishment fees, approval fees, any upfront or ongoing fees that comprise the overall cost of a loan. If you compare comparison rates you are comparing the true interest rate of the product. We tell people just because you can get a good rate doesn’t necessarily mean the product is the best for your circumstances and it is important to always check the features of any financial product you intend to use to ensure the product or service meets your needs and goals. Have a great week, Nicole Nicole Hilton Business Development Officer

School News Spring is in the air at the River School
Contributed by Ann Donoghoe Sunday’s Spring Festival at the Ananda Marga River School in Maleny was a magnificent event. Basking in the glorious sunshine, the crowds gathered to enjoy a smorgasbord of activities. For the children there were pony rides, a giant slide, bubble wands to make, treasure to find, crazy hair, face painting and a jumping castle.
Landsborough students shine Contributed by Kylie Merola Recently, Landsborough State School's Year 6 girls were immersed in a nine-week 'Shine' program that took them on a journey towards ‘Worth, Strength and Purpose’. ‘Shine’ begins with ‘worth’ by coaching girls in personal care (hair and hands, skin care, make up and healthy living), then moves on to ‘Strength’.Girls are encouraged to be strong on the inside by having six key strengths in their lives. During this part of the program many meaningful conversations are shared. The program then moves into ‘Purpose’ where the girls consider their futures and are encouraged to dream and explore the opportunities available to them in life. The ‘Shine’ program finished up with a manners and etiquette session which was held as a high tea celebration at the Sacred Tree Café. This gave the girls a chance to practise their good table manners in a practical way.
An array of food tantalised the senses with pizza baked in the school’s cob oven, an Indian feast, spinach and feta rolls, freshly squeezed lemonade, homemade fudge, ice blocks, popcorn and a variety of sweet treats. Students showcased their musical talents on marimba, cello, guitar, violin and vocals. Thank you to the school organising committee, volunteers and businesses that donated raffle prizes. The success of the day reflects the combined efforts and enjoyment of all.
Shine helped the girls build confidence and resilience The Landsborough State School girls impressed the staff at the Sacred Tree Café so much that they sent through an email afterwards saying, “we would like to congratulate the children who attended the High Tea on Friday, their behaviour and manners were excellent (Julie and Sarah Jackson). Nice work girls!"

St Paul’s Students learn to be Global Citizens Cultural Day at St Paul’s recently provided a wonderful opportunity for the students to extend their understanding of the diverse world we live in. Parents and staff wore traditional dress representing China, Germany, Russia, Finland, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea and India. Parent Brittney Mori presented a wide variety of crafts, traditional food, flags and information about the people from Papua New Guinea. Student Martina Mori said she felt privileged and appreciated the opportunity to represent the beautiful culture of PNG. “I had fun answering the questions from students and found the experience to be thoroughly enjoyable. “My preparation for the day was supported by many friends and family who provided artifacts and information to present.” St Paul’s students are now looking forward to cultural day next year. Peachester classrooms to get air conditioning The Peachester State Primary School P&C were very excited early this term, receiving great news they had been successful in their application to air condition the classrooms within the school. The P&C received $28,000 in the latest round of grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, and this money will be used to air condition classrooms Prep through to Year 6. The grant will cover the ‘lions share’ of the installation and the P&C will cover the balance. Events over the past couple of years have raised enough funds for just this. The Jewellery auction and Art Show were hugely successful and money still remains for the replacement of the senior playground after air conditioning installation. It will be a cool change coming to the children of Peachester School as the summer months approach. Special thanks go to Nicole Haines and her father Phillip for all their hard work putting together the grant application.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Windy August
with Sue Tanner When we moved to Brisbane in about 1998 we lived in Fortitude Valley and excitedly walked to the EKKA the first year we were there. We were almost blown off our feet walking home, the wind was howling through the Valley Mall and up Brunswick Street. No-one was surprised – it’s always windy in August … it’s EKKA time. I came home on Friday from a trip to see family in NSW to find the EKKA winds had been blowing here too (no-one was surprised, it is August). Our block was covered in branches and long strips of bark from our gum trees (perfect for fire kindling). Some large branches we had been worried about came down, but fortunately there was no damage. On Thursday a school walk in the forest had to be cancelled as the track was closed due to the strength of the wind and potential danger of falling branches. There is a climate monitor in the education centre which shows the wind velocity and when it reaches 45km/hr, the track is immediately closed. On a completely different tack – the work on the toilets in the reserve is just days away from completion. It became a much bigger job than anticipated but the ‘porta loos’ will be gone by next week and all will be back to normal, much to everyone’s relief (no pun intended!). On a second different tack – I hope you will all come to the Maleny Music Festival at the showgrounds from August 28 to 30. There is a website (isn’t there always). The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protection and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. To find out how to become involved check out www.friends-of-mary-cairncross.com.au or call 5435 0348.

The environmental health of Coochin Creek in Beerwah – and ultimately the Pumicestone Passage – has been given a boost with the wetland plantingsat Emma Place Park (behind Woodgrove Estate) being expanded. Last Tuesday, volunteers from the Coochin Creek Bushcare Group, supported by the Sunshine Coast Council conservation staff, Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network(GMAN) and SEQCatchments, planted extra lomandras, grasses, sedges and other wetland plants (supplied by Barung Landcare) into an area in the park where they had previously revegetated, as part of a Healthy Country project. The plantings are to stabilise the creek banks and to filter runoff waters, reducing silt and nutrient flows into Coochin Creek, as well as expanding the wildlife corridor through the area. SEQCatchments Northern Area Manager, Susie Chapman was impressed with the progress. “It’s fantastic to see the area transformed from a weedy mess to an area which will now provide so many benefits to the waterway and local wildlife,” she said. “It forms a part of an interconnected web of land rehabilitation projects which will ultimately lead to significant environmental improvements across the catchment.” A new sign has been erected at the site by Sunshine Coast Council to let locals know what has occurred and who was involved. The Coochin Creek Bushcare Group undertakes working bee mornings on the third Tuesday of the month, meeting at Emma Place Park. Anyone interested in joining in for some light weeding or planting and to learn more about the local environment is welcome to come along. They are especially looking for someone who is keen to take monthly water sampling measurements. This involves using a hand-held gadget to read various water conditions (such as temperature and salinity). No special skills are needed and all training will be provided. To find out more, contact group coordinator Roger Callen on 5494 6278.

Spring Blossoms
By Melissa Cronin (Managing Pharmacist) With Winter passing and Spring almost upon us it is time to start being proactive about allergies. Seasonal allergies are most prevalent during Spring due to pollens in the air from flowering trees and bushes, and unfortunately allergies do not discriminate. Young and old suffer from allergies which are easily preventable without locking yourself away from the rest of the world. Here are some helpful tips: 1. Find out what you are allergic to. 2. Avoid dusk, dawn and windy conditions as this is when pollen is most likely to be present. 3. Vacuum your house regularly to reduce dust. 4. Anti-histamines are both a treatment and prevention and can be taken on a daily basis without serious side-effects. There are also many natural products that can help allergies so come into store and ask any of our friendly pharmacists who will be able to help you live your life allergy-free!

Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help.
Acupuncture & Massage
The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today on 5494 0499 Beerwah, or visit www.adjusttolife.com.au Business feature

How can acupuncture help you with digestion? Do you suffer from any of these symptoms? … indigestion / reflux, irritable bowel, constipation, bloating, pain (in the stomach or intestines), loose stools. So what does this all mean for you? Acupuncture stimulates energy to the liver, gall bladder, stomach and spleen – the four main channels for digestion. Acupuncture isn’t like a lot of medications – a one size fits all treatment. It’s an individual based treatment for each and every patient. Fine Japanese pins and rice grain Okyu Moxa are placed at specific points, combined with nutritional counselling. It is wonderfully empowering for a patient to not only feel better and experience improved digestion from acupuncture, but to have more control over their health and how to stay healthy. The next thing you’re probably wondering is how many treatments will it take? Most patients that have digestive issues usually notice improvement by the third or fourth session. Patients are advised on their first visit that improvements may only last a day or two at first, then on the second to third visit they will remain symptom free for up to a week. This is when we usually change to fortnightly visits. When they feel they no longer have the particular issues, we then look at every 2-3 months for a single ‘top up - tune up treatment’. It’s really important to remember that what thoughts we are digesting (such as overthinking) can often have a huge impact on our digestion.

from excess filing or buffing and it has superior adhesion qualities. ‘Calgel’ provides long lasting low maintenance nails which reduce the number of salon visits required to every 3 to 4 weeks, which makes it good value. Living Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Witta There has been a Lutheran congregation meeting in Witta for 123 years. In the 1890s Teutoburg's pioneer community was predominantly composed of Lutheran Christians and Sunday was observed as a day of rest and worship (Teutoburg was renamed Witta in 1916). In the beginning they held their services in private houses. Most things were made from trees in the early years. In Teutoburg selectors felled trees to clear the rainforest from the land and pit sawed the timber into planks which they then worked with simple hand tools, to make fences, furniture, houses and, in 1893, a church. Once they had satisfied the conditions of selection, the community worked together to create facilities in the centre of the new town. Ludwig Bergann provided a corner of his selection to accommodate the new building, and he and Frederick Vandreike, built a weatherboard church from pit sawn White Beech timber. Sadly, Ludwig Bergann only lived a few more years before he died after a painful three-day long illness in 1895, a condition explained at the time as ‘inflammation’. He was buried close to the church he had helped to build. This original church has now gone but another timber church was built in 1910, the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, which survives today. It's small but perfectly formed and has some interesting fixtures and fittings. It was built by another Teutoburg local, Edward Tesch, who won the contract worth 14 pounds. His father Ludwig built the altar and pulpit.
Sunday school in the late 1920s The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church underwent repairs and renovations in 1926 and 1946, when the stained glass windows were added and work done in the garden and grounds to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the building took place in 1991. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Teutoburg was formally recognised by the Supreme Court of Queensland on 19th September 1921. This year we are holding the first Wittafest on 19th September 2015, that’s the 94th anniversary! Many thanks to the Witta Lutheran congregation for supporting Wittafest; the church will be open on September 19 for visitors to have a look inside. You can visit Teutoburg anytime but a good time to do it will be at Wittafest, a family fun and free community event celebrating our cultural heritage and including historical tours of the cemetery, school and church. Please show your support for Wittafest by making a donation to our online crowdfunding campaign here: https://chuffed.org/project/wittafest-2015

Doors open at Bankfoot House Alana wanted to see every room in the old house, and looked closely at objects like the candle mould, which she remembered Ron had shown to her class. This budding historian was particularly interested in the old school readers and exercise books in the Bankfoot collection that had been used by children who lived in the house around 100 years ago.The exercise books contain stories, arithmetic, compositions, word building exercises, geography, letter-writing, grammar and poetry – all written in cursive script, (also known as running writing) with blue ink. The pages are neatly ruled with red ink and there are elaborate headings. The Friends of Bankfoot House are thrilled with Alana’s interest, as she will help to spread the word about Bankfoot.
Bankfoot House is located at 2681 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains. Interested in learning more about Bankfoot House? Sex and Violence The bible is full of it. And nowhere more than in a part of the bible called Judges. It is one of my favourite books of the bible. You cannot help but think this cannot be part of the Bible. Judges is the record of how ancient Israel degenerates because they reject God’s leadership and ideals. By the time we get to the end of the book, the hero, the best ancient Israel can muster, is a priest who cuts his mistress (who had been abused so horribly that she ends up dying while he ignores her) into 12 pieces and sends her remains to the various clans of Israel asking for justice. It is a horrible way to end a book- and remember these are the good guys in the Bible.

The book is meant to shock and confront us as we ask, how did Israel get into so much strife? The answer is found in Judge’s recurring chorus - it says in those days there was no king and everyone did what was right in their own eyes. According to this book everyone genuinely and sincerely thought they were doing the right thing - but it wasn’t working - life just got worse. Everyone has different opinions and ideas. Eventually those ideas are going to clash, and people are going to insist their way is the right way while someone else is going to insist their way is the correct or better way. How do we know which is right and whose opinion is wrong? Can we even say someone else’s opinion is wrong? The book of Judges said Israel needed a king someone who could show them and guide them. We need the same. It’s for this reason that Jesus the true King makes the astounding claim ‘I am the way the truth and the life.’

How clean are your Solar Panels?
A small group of hardworking Year 6 Mooloolah State School boys decided this term that they would like to help the school groundsman prepare the gardens around the school for Spring. They are keen to get their hands dirty many lunch hours during their week. They are a dedicated group of boys that are learning many things other than just classroom-based work. The groundsman Tim is pleased with their efforts and input. They are learning important things such as teamwork, cooperation, planning and good oldfashioned physical work instead of being bored in their breaks. They have shown great initiative in their ideas and the work they have completed already. They are also trying to create a small pond at the front of the school. It is wonderful to see them fully engaged in weeding, mulching, trimming, digging and planting. The school gardens are being slowly transformed
and the boys work has proven to be a real hit in the school community.
New nursery opens in Maleny By Greg Brown Spring has sprung and the new face in native plant nurseries on the Sunshine Coast opens in Maleny on the September 1 (the first day of spring!) Forest Heart, located in Coral Street, Maleny is your ‘local native plant nursery’ and is owned and operated by Karen and Spencer Shaw and the Brush Turkey Enterprises team. What’s with the name, I hear you say? Forest Heart because Karen and Spencer are passionate about our local native flora and

fauna; your local native plant nursery because you’re all welcome; and local native plants because that’s what they specialise in. Spencer said South East Queensland is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots and many plants and animals are under threat from loss of habitat. But as a community we can all help turn this loss around, by learning about, and planting, some of our amazing diversity of over 3000 local native plant species in SE Queensland alone! “Before people get worried thinking planting local native plants means planting forest giants that will one day fall in a storm and remodel your house, our goal at Forest Heart is to make available as much of the diversity of SE Queensland flora as we can, including flowering annuals, bulbs, ferns, grasses, shrubs, vines and trees,” he said. Karen and Spencer invite you to visit Forest Heart this Spring as they launch their nursery. Check out the newly planted gardens and the great range of plants, tree guards, mulch mats, revegetation and bush regeneration tools, native flora and fauna books, other educational resources and of course some of the best advice on native plants on the Sunshine Coast.

Think ahead and be prepared for the Festive Season Now is a great time to think ahead about preparing for the upcoming Christmas and summer season. This is traditionally a busy time of year with entertaining and family-time often a priority, and so now is the time to plan those projects and have your property prepared so you can relax and enjoy your time off with friends and family without last minute hassles. Here at Jaz Build, we encourage our clients to consider any preparation and potential renovation decisions before Christmas. Typically people will call with last minute requests that are impossible to complete in time, but by planning and booking ahead these jobs can be easily completed to let you enjoy the silly season. People should also be prepared for summer. Leaking structures should be repaired before the rain season – as water damage can be serious.
Check your roof, gutters, fascias and other areas that need repairs. In our region, white ants are also a major concern, so either check your property yourself thoroughly or give John at Glasshouse Country Pest Control a call on 0407 439 526. Christmas is often an expensive time of year. Jaz Build has found that clients are enjoying the great benefits of investing in their own property, and creating a perfect entertaining space. A new bar, deck or outdoor entertainment area will bring the party to you and save money in the long term. Who doesn’t want to relax and take in the great surroundings we have in the Hinterland and Glasshouse Country region? Outdoor zones provide an extension of the family home and the opportunity to have some fun in a safe and comfortable environment. Popular additions currently include pizza ovens, fire pits,
pool decking and outdoor barbeques, as well as new patios to extend the family living area. Also popular are requests for extensions to provide extra room for guests and / or more space for the family. We offer people design advice that can include changing the feel of a dull room to lighten the space and revitalise your home. You can’t buy the views we have in city real estate – so make the most of this lucky country region and let us assist in helping you fully enjoy your living space.

AUGUST 26 2015
with Jade King
Spring is just around the corner, although you would be justified in thinking it has been making attempted reappearances quite regularly since Autumn! I always have difficulty deciding what to plant around the seasonal transition time and tend to hedge my bets both ways as per the table. I now have a new patch which was filled using the ‘lasagna layering’ system by some amazing people attending the gardening workshop, so I’ve had my Ag Science students dive in and plant out everything that could possibly consider growing. Whilst our new garden has only just begun, many more elements need to be added in an attempt to create a naturally balanced system – one where you invite nature into your garden and work with it, not against it. Whether you are a symmetrical and orderly person like myself, or a freespirited random person, there are key elements that will help to create the balanced garden system, and these include a range of habitats, water and what I call islands of diversity. Nature truly offers the best pest and disease defenses, and the more you include natural elements, the better equipped your garden will be. From large to small, you can attract birds to combat caterpillars, lizards to feed on grasshoppers, beneficial insects to counteract the pests, right down to beneficial fungi and bacteria that protects the plants, feeds the soil and wages a war on pathogenic organisms. There are some very simple ways to invite nature to your garden through habitat. You can simply place some rocks and logs around as these provide the best refuge for insect hungry lizards. The beauty of natural elements such as rocks and logs is that they are inexpensive and can make beautiful features. I’m planning to make islands of diversity, basically small beds planted with a mix of herbs and flowers. I’ll be choosing flowers and herbs that range in height and attract insects. The different heights and plants serve to make a more complex environment, which results in a greater range of species, hence, islands of diversity. Water is also another key component to any garden. This can be a simple container of water that you regularly flush out to prevent mosquitoes, or it can be a pond that has adequate depth to cater for fish and other aquatic life that will feed on the mosquitoes and garden pests. Why don’t you go and be creative in your garden and add some simple elements to create a naturally balanced masterpiece! I’ll be sure to keep you updated on how our very basic beginning patch evolves over time. Until next time in Get Up and Grow! Vegetable

Property buyers show a preference for new homes If you’ve got your eye on a brand new property, chances are you won’t be alone. “Detached houses drove the modest increase in new home sales in June this year, with a 1.7 per cent rise offsetting a 2.9 per cent decline in the sale of multi-units,” revealed Housing Industry Association (HIA) Chief Economist Harley Dale. He noted that during the first six months of 2015, seasonally-adjusted sales figures were up 0.5 per cent. A peak was reached back in April, but this hasn’t stopped buyers www.gcnews.com.au

given the go ahead in June was down 1.2 per cent over the previous month.
VIC and NSW emerged as the premier states for sales of detached houses. However, the remainder of the mainland states didn’t quite see such positive results. Throughout the June quarter, sales were down 10.2 per cent in SA, followed by falls of 7 per cent and 3.1 per cent in QLD and WA respectively.
The strongest increases in approvals were witnessed in the ACT and NT, which registered rises of 14.6 per cent and 8.7 per cent. QLD and TAS were the only other jurisdictions to have seen a rise in approvals.

Beerwah Ladies Golf
Contributed by Sue Greentree On Tuesday,August 18, Ladies Open Day, 128 women from nine different clubs played in three divisions for trophies donated by Kelly Oil and Gas. The single stroke competition was the final round of the Net Pennant Competition and the day was won by the Beerwah Ladies. The overall winner of the Pennant competition was Bribie Island. The Beerwah Ladies put on a great day and a special thank you goes to Kelly Oil and Gas for their continued sponsorship and support. On Thursday, August 20, 114 men and women played in the Men’s Invitation Day for trophies donated by Glasshouse Country Meats and Matilda Fruit Barn. The competition was an American Foursomes and the worthy winners were Barbara Drury and Peter Purvis with 64 5/8 nett. 1st Runners-up were Peter and Judy Fisher with 67 ¾ nett And 2nd Runners-up were Paul O’Shea and Trevor Cutting with 68 nett. NTP’s were won by: Denise and Bob Kirkby No 2; Roy and Ellie Robinson No5; Peter and Judy Fisher No 16 and on No 18, John and Pam Marsden, Barbara Drury and Peter Purvis and Paul O’Shea and Trevor Cutting. The Ball Rundown went to 72 3/8 nett. A special thank you goes to Glasshouse Country Meats and Matilda Fruit Barn for their sponsorship and support. The competition next week on Thursday, August 27 will be a Single Stableford sponsored by Helen Lewis and Fay Barry. The Ladies welcome new members, beginners and visitors. Happy golfing.
Beerburrum Strongman Tim O’Shea placed second in the top division of the Strongman event at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Show on Saturday. The competition was Round Three of the Queensland Strongman Series, and a second place in this event puts Tim in second place on the leaderboard in the Queensland Strongman Series, with one round to go. At the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Show round there were over forty competitors. In the top division, Tim had to carry a 325kg yoke, farmers carry 125kg in each hand, drag a 250kg sled, lift 105kg kegs overhead, deadlift 230kg seven times and lift a 130kg stone over a 1.6m bar four times. Tim said “It was great to have a round of the premier strongman series in Queensland here in Beerwah and to compete in front of a home crowd was fun. Plenty of people came to watch despite the adverse weather, and I hope they enjoyed the show!” The strongman event at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Show has grown from a five person demonstration in 2013, to a full round of the Queensland Strongman Series, thanks to the dedication of Strongman administrators such as Alana Curnow, Thomas Koch and Marc Wells. Tim’s next major event is the East Coast Highland Games Championships in Port Nelson, NSW on September 19, so he’ll be donning his kilt and dusting off his caber for plenty of training over the next month.

Golden Gloves success for Handful Boxing
Contributed by Brett W Smith Handful Boxing had a two young boxers fight at the 2015 National Golden Gloves last weekend at Acacia Ridge. Connor Shepherd (12) boxed in the final on Saturday in a close fight but went down to a good southpaw from New South Wales to claim a silver medal. It was a great effort in his first ever fight and he will be a better athlete for it. Older brother Callum Shepherd (14) stepped up to the 60kg division and gave away 3kg. He boxed a clever fight and showed a lot of flare and natural ability, well beyond his six fight experience, to claim first and the Golden Gloves in his division. He has a genuine gift that you can't train so I'm looking forward to his development over the next 12 months.
Callum (left) and Connor with Brett W Smith celebrate their achievements

Sport San Team getting about
Contributed by Norm Taylor Our younger San Taekwondo team members have recently had a chance to show their skills at some local events. A small group from the Maleny and Beerwah clubs put together a demonstration at the River School Fair last week. The group really enjoyed performing some of their skills for the crowd and these activities really help to hone their techniques because the team want to show their friends what they can do. We are also planning to perform at the Maleny State School Fair and the Beerwah Street Party later in the year. Last Saturday a small group of players also attended a friendly development competition at Caloundra. Emma Hall had a great day at her first competition, winning two matches as well as the highest kick competition. The red belt boys also had a great time with some wins and some losses. Also on Saturday Beerwah instructor Cameron Taylor met some of the locals at the Strongman Challenge at the Beerwah Charity Sports Day. San Training Centre runs a variety of programs for all ages and is now starting signon for the coming season. Visit www.santkd. com for more information. Just for Laughs You name it, we’ll make it!
Burglar scarer
Was the big sign outside the town’s newest restaurant. “There is no food we can’t make for you!” “Excuse me sir”, said a man with a heavy Russian accent to the waiter, “I vould like please, A Garden Salad vith Russian dressing.” “Russian dressing?! Screamed the head cook, “I’ve never even heard of Russian dressing! What are we going to give this guy?” “Don’t worry,” said the owner to the cook, “I’ll take care of everything, you just make the salad.” And that’s how it happened that two minutes later the waiter walked out with a big Garden Salad and a picture of a Russian man putting on his pants.
As I stepped out of the shower, I heard someone in my kitchen downstairs. Knowing that my wife was out, I grabbed my 1903 heirloom rifle— which no longer works—and crept downstairs, forgetting the fact that I was in my birthday suit. I came around the corner with the gun raised, only to find my wife loading the dishwasher.“What are you doing?” she asked. “I thought I heard an intruder. I came down to scare him.” Scanning the contours of my doughy, naked body, she mumbled, “You didn’t need the gun.” Submitted by Sarah, Glass House Mountains

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 A travel or educational opportunity just needs the details straightened out. You don’t need to tell everyone your ambitions and your role in public affairs. Listening to others is better than voicing your own ideas. The weekend sees a cloud of confusion now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 To capitalise on a lucky trend you can derive profit from a contract, news, deal or arrangement. Remember that people are unpredictable. With the full Moon this weekend in Pisces, agreements made now, may unfortunately be overturned later. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The full moon this weekend in your sign brings immediate attention to the divide between yourself and others. The moon for over two days in your sign brings peace and puts you rightfully in the best relationship by lettings things happen not forcing issues. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week sees beneficial influences operating for you in the area of work and health. It’s time now to plan improvements as your confidence in yourself is well founded. The weekend sees the full Moon making you restless, dreaming about how to change your life.
TAURUS April 21 – May 21 You welcome astute advice, as it comes in to bring a burst of confidence and expansion in your creativity and recreational pleasures. Mercury enters the sign of Libra giving you thoughts about wanting to live in a more harmonious way with your soul-mate partner. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 There is a stressful energy from the planets to force you into taking a break from routine. The full Moon on the weekend will be in Pisces and that promotes more infatuation with ideas, rather than substance. So distinguish realisable dreams from sheer fantasy! CANCER June 22 – July 22 There is a decision that you will make this week that will expand your own thinking, and bring positive results from voicing your ideas about your lifestyle. As Mercury enters the air sign of Libra, for the weeks ahead, this brings your conscious attention to home affairs. LEO July 23 – August 22 Luck and good fortune could be operating for you this week if you are backed by a shrewd analysis of potentials. The weekend sees the prospect of doing something new. A new lease on life with help from your partner, fills you with hope and encouragement now.

Week beginning 26/08/2015 VIRGO August 23 – September 22 There are some dreams that you need to record in the wee hours of the morning if you are looking for information! So the weekend, under the romantic full Moon of Pisces, sees you easing into a quiet, reflective weekend. Personal plans make you somewhat anxious. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Some background support may make you feel that there is an angel in your corner! Faith in positive outcomes will be rewarded. The full Moon on Sunday can bring hopeful promises. Make a note however that others good intentions are not enough. Get it in writing. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 As Mercury enters Libra it brings to your attention private matters. There is emotional conflict since that sign gets confused about which direction to take. Frustrations continue to build through the weekend so don’t expect things to be totally above board. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Do you want to do anything with real estate? Your hopes may be high, but not completely realistic. The full Moon weekend in Pisces puts a spotlight on being patient, rather than rushing faster than it is safe to do. Manoeuvre around someone’s eccentricities.
