Hi Everyone... While the date for the upcoming federal election hasn’t been formally announced we have clearly entered election campaign mode. Long-time readers will know that our approach at GC&M News is to ensure we offer a fair and equitable approach to each of the candidates, giving them all the same chance to share their story and inform our readers about what they bring to the role and what issues they see as important. We have started introducing the different party candidates for Fisher on page 4 of our Local News section. Earlier in the month we introduced Daniel Parsell from Labor, this week it is One Nation’s candidate Chris Paterson, next week it will be Paul Monaghan from the Love Australia or Leave Party and hopefully in the following edition it will be the Greens candidate Tracy Burton. Once the election date is announced we will be keen to put questions to each of the candidates about the issues that are important to GC&M News readers. So, if you have a question that you would like us to put to the candidates make sure you email it through to editorial@gcnews.com.au.

One Nation announce candidate for Fisher The One Nation party last week announced its candidate for the upcoming federal election in the local electorate of Fisher. Chris Paterson, an industrial air conditioning technician from Little Mountain, has been preselected to contest the seat against sitting LNP member Andrew Wallace. Mr Paterson is a co-founder of the charity Bamboo Projects Education that aims to support those with mental health and physical difficulties by taking them on an outing, often fishing, and just being present to offer a compassionate listening ear. Due to his decision to campaign as a candidate in the federal election, Mr Paterson has resigned from executive roles at Bamboo Projects Education. “It’s not necessarily something you want to do - jumping out and saying, ‘Hey, I want to be a candidate’, because you know you’re going to get attacked by the other parties. You know you’re not going to have the same views and opinions and, as human beings, we don’t want to be judged, we don’t want to be seen to be wrong, but it’s something I have to do,” Mr Paterson said of his decision to nominate as a candidate. “I’ve got two young children and I think, ‘How are they going to buy a house if the economy keeps going the way it is?’ ” Mr Paterson is disappointed that the major political parties seem to have lost direction when it comes to community needs.

Chris Paterson (centre) with Steve Dickson and Malcolm Roberts “The two major parties are always about being right and wrong, making the other ones wrong to make them look right, instead of working together, so I have no issues working with Liberals and Labor, whatever, as long as it’s to benefit the community and get the best outcome possible,” he said. Mr Paterson’s passion and drive has been demonstrated in his campaign to secure a $60,000 disabled access boat for the Sunshine Coast. Despite collecting 8000 signatures on a petition, both the Australian and Queensland governments declined to support the project, but he pushed forwards regardless and raised the funds through business and individual donations and a grant from Sunshine Coast Council. “That’ll be the first wheelchair access boat offering a free service on the Sunshine Coast because that’s what people wanted,” Mr Patterson said. The wheelchair access boat will be launched on March 10.

Binge on Australian film The 24th Australian Film Festival kicks off soon with a weekend of fine filmic offerings at the Maleny Community Centre from Friday March 8 to Sunday March 10. Hosted by the Maleny Film Society, Australia’s longest running not-for-profit film appreciation club, the festival program features a diverse selection of fine offerings including five feature films and awardwinning shorts, panel discussions, workshops, free sessions and more. Festival organiser Andrew Wallace explained that one of the great aspects of the festival is that it allows a number of films to be seen and discussed in a short space of time as well as providing an authentic feel for what is going on in the Australian film industry right now. Andrew said he would like to encourage people to see it as a full festival experience and to come along to binge on Australian film all weekend, then compare and contrast, evaluate critically and think more deeply. “We’ll also be showing some excellent work by adventurous independent directors that may not get much of a run in the multiplexes. Enjoy the screenings and immerse yourself in the discussions and workshops. We’d love to encourage critical dialogue and comparisons of the films,” Andrew said. One of the festival highlights (and our GC&M News cover stars) will be the critically acclaimed documentary ‘Backtrack Boys’, which has been wowing audiences around the country since it’s national release late last year. Filmed over two years, this observational documentary follows the inspirational story of

By Sonia Clark

troubled teens who engage in a unique youth program run by straight talking jackaroo, Bernie Shakeshaft (pictured). Travelling the country with the boys in his care and his legendary national championship dog jumping team, together they navigate the highs and lows of life on the road. An inspiring and life-affirming coming-of-age story, ‘Backtrack Boys’ reveals the challenges and triumphs of these troubled boys and the perceptive championship dogs that help tame them through trust and affection that may have been sadly lacking in their previous lives. The film has already won a swag of awards, including audience awards for best documentary at the Sydney Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival. Andrew highly recommends the film as a must-see and says it is a great example of skilful documentary making by not just dispensing facts, but following the stories of several individuals. “The film restores your faith in human nature. Australians like to think that some of our best values come from the bush - that decency, generosity and down-to-earth common sense are most often found in country people. There is no easy sentimentality; there are rocky patches in some of these young lives and the film draws attention to defects in our justice system. The film is thought-provoking as well as uplifting,” Andrew said. In a festival coup, following the 1pm screening on Saturday, March 9, a team of Backtrack boys with their dogs, as well as two staff members from the Backtrack program, will be on hand to conduct a

Glasshouse Property Sales

Bernie with Rusty Photo by Paul Shakeshaft brief Q&A with festival goers. Festival organisers hope that film buffs and nonbuffs alike, culture vultures and even those with just an interest in broadening their everyday experiences will head along to the festival. By providing a program that mixes screenings with discussions and guest speakers, patrons are encouraged to absorb themselves into the magic of this powerful medium all weekend with a great mix of paid and free sessions to appeal to everyone. The festival program kicks off on Friday, March 8 with the official launch party followed by the first of five specially selected feature films and an award winning short film. Saturday, March 9 features a full program of feature films, shorts and panel discussions. Pre-ordered Thai dinner is available in the evening followed by another award-winning short and special guest speaker and emerging Australian film talent Alena Lodkina, who will introduce her feature ’Strange Colours’. Sunday features a free film appreciation workshop and final festival features. For ticketing and program information visit www.malenyfilmsociety.info or call 0418 708 244.

Beerwah Pub gets behind knitting charity Following Beerwah Hotel’s decision to no longer host the Envirobank recycling system, hotel management put out a call via Facebook for suggestions of hinterland organisations and sporting clubs the hotel should support through the containers for change initiative. Beerwah Hotel marketing and loyalty manager Cassie Ross said the list was narrowed down to the five local organisations that received the most votes and the community was then asked to choose the winner via a Facebook competition. Voting closed on Monday, February 12, and Glass House Mountains-based organisation ‘Knitting for Brisbane’s needy’ was announced as the worthy winner.

“We let the public decide who they wanted to see receive the cans and the response to the initiative was incredible,” Cassie said. “We thought it was also a fantastic way to offer our support to our deserving community groups as well as looking after the environment by recycling.” The Beerwah Hotel team congratulated charity Knitting for Brisbane's Needy, which received 12,038 votes. Cassie said that on behalf of the Beerwah Hotel they would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone who voted. The initiative will run on a six-month rotation basis, so two charities will be supported each year.

Sunshine Coast Council has approved an application to convert an existing approval for a 19 lot housing estate off King Road in Mooloolah to be developed as a 50 lot over-50s retirement village. This latest approval given two weeks ago will add more than 100 new residents to Mooloolah, where recent and proposed urban developments will see the population increase to an estimated 4,800 by 2026*. The development, although allowable under the council planning scheme, originally exceeded the allowable density for the zoning. However, council agreed that if more land (994m2) was allocated as a dedicated bushland park, the overall density would be reduced to slightly

higher than the maximum allowable. Council has also imposed 75 conditions on the development, including that a live-in manager must be included and that a 24-hour nursing station and/or 24-hour monitored alert system is maintained. Being designated as code assessable, the local Mooloolah community were left out of the decision-making process as no community submissions were allowed to be officially made for or against the development proposal. Financial seminar for women at risk The Zonta Club of Blackall Range will partner with the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to present a financial literacy seminar on March 6 for women of 50 and over who are ‘at risk’. The program is funded by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Women’s Week community grants scheme, with the theme ‘Invest in women, invest in the future’. The initiative “celebrates the achievements of Queensland’s women and girls” and its goal is part of a program to achieve gender equality. The Maleny course is aimed at women who feel their lack of knowledge about money matters and difficulty in managing their finances may put them at risk of hardship in the future. President of the Zonta Club of Blackall Range and facilitator of the seminar, Julie Bevan, said the goal of Queensland Women’s Week accorded exactly with the mission of Zonta International, which has been pursuing the aim of achieving gender equality for 100 years. “Zonta, too, recognises the importance of financial literacy and capability and that it improves the economic security of women and benefits the entire community,” Julie said. “There is increasing need for women to manage their own finances to avoid risk from every aspect of their lives, from unnecessary credit charges through to the risk of homelessness. “It has been observed that the greatest danger of homelessness is among women aged 50 plus,

Business News Delay on Landsborough dog kennel proposal The application for a new dog breeding and kennels facility that could house more than 300 dogs on a property at the end of Amigh Road in Landsborough has stalled. Just before the deadline to provide further information to Sunshine Coast Council, the consulting agency acting on behalf of the developer and Mooloolah-based dog breeding company Diamond Valley Kennels requested a three-month extension from council. Council had indicated that from the details provided in the original application, it was unsure whether the development was justified. Specifically, council asked the developer to provide a “… rationale and justification for the demand and need for animal keeping of this scale and how the wellbeing of any animals will not be compromised by having such a large operation”. This query mirrors concerns expressed by animal welfare supporters who have been heavily advocating against the application via social media, especially through the ‘No Puppy Farms in Queensland’ Facebook page. Council also queried how the developer intended to comply with relevant state legislation and council laws relating to the keeping of animals. Other problems flagged included issues with storm water management, driveway access, the extent of earthworks, bushfire planning, waste water and sewerage management and noise assessment. Council has given the developer until June 6 to respond, after which it will proceed with assessing the application. This comes on top of a looming March 1 information request deadline from the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning, which had previously notified the applicant that the development requires a deeper level of explanation relating to

its traffic impacts on Steve Irwin Way. In a legal twist, the administrator of the ‘No Puppy Farms in Queensland’ Facebook page has reportedly received a letter – via a photo through Facebook private messenger – from a lawyer representing Diamond Valley Kennels threatening legal action. The photo of the letter dated February 20 is from a law firm based in Dubbo NSW, and states that posts on the Facebook page are considered to be “… false and misleading and have the potential to harm the reputation of our client’s business. As such, they are defamatory”. The letter dictated that within six hours of the receipt of the photo all disparaging posts must be deleted from all forums and a public apology and retraction made, and includes threats of legal action if the demands are not met. In response, the Facebook page administrator confirmed that they stand by each and every one of their posts. “Each post is carefully considered, thoroughly researched and backed by evidence,” they stated. “Defamatory statements are false statements. Each and every one of our posts has been factual and they will continue to be. “Diamond Valley Kennels can attempt to intimidate those who speak out against their business. We are the voice for the beautiful dogs who spend the best years of their life confined to the fences of a puppy farm. We will not be silenced.”

Maleny petrol station … take two In a surprise move last week, radically changed plans for the controversial Maleny petrol station development proposal were submitted by Synergy Property Partners to the Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Council. The government’s State Assessment and Referral Agency’s (SARA) had requested further information before it could fully assess the original proposal. In response, a considerable package of studies, plans and other documents was submitted, including a complete change to the petrol station layout. The submission from consultants Place Design Group stated that the significant redesign was undertaken to improve the Bunya Street frontage (as requested by the council) and to reduce conflict between cars and pedestrians, particularly on Bunya Street.

The major change is that the service station building is now located on the north-eastern corner of the site, with no cars entering or exiting directly onto Bunya Street. Instead, access will be from Lawyers Street (entry only) and Cudgerie Street (all movements). The planned separate fast food and drink tenancies have been scrapped and are no longer part of the proposal. Instead, food and drinks will be sold as part of the service station operation, as is the case at most other smaller centres. Some form of street art/sculpture is proposed in the northern corner of the site and additional landscaping is proposed along the site’s boundaries. There are still eight bowsers planned, but parking has been reduced from 16 to 11 car parks due to the changed layout and smaller building footprint.

More of the site will also be under landscaping – from 311m2 (15.4%) to 440m2 (21.7%). No new air or noise quality studies were undertaken as the relevant consultants contended that the revised plans would not greatly change the parameters. The consultants recommended some changes to noise barriers along the boundary with adjoining properties and suggested that the noise levels towards the school would be reduced. They noted that the air quality impacts would be less on the school and adjoining dental clinic as the bowsers and vents would be further from the school and the prevailing winds would further dilute any emissions. At this month’s Witta Markets the management committee of the Old Witta School Community Centre Inc were delighted to welcome Member for Glass House Andrew Powell, who presented the committee with a cheque for $13,987 from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. These funds, along with $7,000 grant from Sunshine Coast Council, will be used to renovate the kitchen in the old school building. The school provides a serene setting for significant celebrations with reasonable hire rates, extensive and beautifully maintained grounds and plenty of parking space. The renovation will enhance the quality of the Old Witta School as a venue available for hire for parties, workshops, weddings, conferences and meetings. Always looking ahead, and with the kitchen project in hand, the management committee is planning to upgrade the water supply. To assist fundraising efforts for a new rainwater tank a raffle was held at the Witta Markets. The winner of the wheelbarrow loaded with garden products was keen gardener Renate Kirkpatrick of Landsborough. The committee thanked Maleny Town and Country for donating the wheelbarrow and Liam Price of Hindsight Wealth for donating $250 to fill the wheelbarrow. Getting to Beerwah the gateway to everywhere

For residents living between Peachester and Beerwah, where there is limited public transport, Sunshine Coast Council’s Flexilink trial service runs three times a day from Monday to Saturday using a Glasshouse Taxi Service vehicle, opening up a world of freedom for its users. The idea behind the program is to provide an affordable option, at just $2 each way, for those using the service to gain access to trains and buses heading to the coast and beyond. The service runs like a bus, following a designated route but passengers must pre-book for the service. There are no designated stops along the route that winds its way along Fortune Avenue and Storrs Road and back to Peachester Road. However, at the time of booking the driver will advise you where and when they can pick you up safely. Bookings for the service are made by calling 1300 511 163 two hours before the service, or in the case of the first service of the morning bookings need to be made by 9pm the previous evening. Monday to Friday services run from Beerwah at 7.05am, 11.50am and 5.45pm and from Peachester at 6.45am, 12.10pm and 6.05pm. On Saturdays and public holidays the service from Beerwah is at 8.55am, 12.20pm and 6.30pm and from Peachester at 8.30am, 12.40pm and 6.50pm. If there are no bookings for a scheduled service, a vehicle is not dispatched. Visit council’s website for more information or to download the timetable. You can also pick up a timetable from Beerwah Library, or phone council’s customer service team on 5475 7272. The transport levy on council rates contributes to cost of the Flexilink trial services.

Masons support Coast Guard The Landsborough Masons were recently asked to donate a blower to Caloundra Coast Guard to help the volunteer organisation keep the yard clean at its headquarters. Rick Joyce from the Masons said they were aware that Caloundra Coast Guard, as a volunteer organisation, had to fundraise or apply for grants to buy vital equipment. “We decided to help them out by using a Bunnings voucher that we had received to buy the blower,” Rick said.

Commander Joe Allen, Rick Joyce, Chris Hamilton and Andrew Drake watch the new blower in action Rick, with fellow Landsborough Masons member Andrew Drake, went to Caloundra Coast Guard recently to present the blower. After the presentation they were given a tour of the premises and told about the duties carried out to keep boaties safe.

Heritage day a great success The Maleny Community Heritage Day on Saturday, February 16 was a great day, with nearly 300 people attending to discover more about the history and heritage of Maleny. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said the chamber would like to say a big thank you to all those who attended and completed the survey on what they valued about Maleny’s history.

Nicole thanked the Sunshine Coast Council Heritage Library and the Maleny Library for the use of images, and for copies of the Heritage Discovery Guides to give away. Thanks also go to the Maleny Cultural and Historical Society for historical photos and display of historical items, especially to Desley Malone for coming along on the day, and to Friends of Pattemore House for their photos. The information gathered on the day is now being collated and a report will be put together on the direction to take. Maleny Commerce is now looking at hosting another display at the Maleny Show to capture more information. Watch this space!

Mapping Queensland during World War II With the threat of a Japanese invasion during the Second World War, the federal government realised that Australia was very poorly covered by topographical maps. These would have been essential if a war was to be fought on Australian soil. To redress this oversight, military survey companies were set up in several Australian states including the Survey Corps in Queensland, which comprised surveyors and cartographers. They were camped at the Kilcoy Showgrounds, where they were trained in the art of topographic mapping. Following their training the group moved northward along the Queensland coastline preparing maps. The maps were completed towards the end of the war. In the 1980s, Bill Kitson interviewed about 30 of these men and collected their stories and other memorabilia. Bill will be the guest speaker at the Peachester

History Committee meeting on Sunday, March 3, where he will share the story of the Survey Corps (some of the men are pictured here, photo courtesy of Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying). This is also the committee’s AGM and will be held at the Peachester Hall from 11am. Visitors are welcome. Please bring a contribution for the shared lunch. Community Groups Glasshouse Country Toastmasters

Contributed by Martine Goedhart Our last Toastmasters meeting was held on Valentine’s Day and to coincide with this romantic date our meeting incorporated the mock wedding of Ian Pinker and Helene Ross (pictured). We were entertained by the speeches of the best man, the mother of the bride and the groom’s mother. Julie McBurney, the table topic master of the morning, asked six friends in the wedding party to think back to recall some interesting facts about them. It was all done in good fun that was quite revealing. The bride had a witty response, thanking her parents for the house as a wedding present and telling her husband what to expect now that they were married. In his speech the groom told us that he was delighted to find his beautiful wife and despite her shortcomings he would always love her and her money. If you would like to see what Toastmasters is all about, join us for a meeting. We meet every second and fourth Thursday of the month at 9am for a 9.15am start at Church on the Rise, 27 Beerwah Parade, Beerwah. If you would like to know more call Martine 5496 9855 or Esther 0412 691 189.

She is dedicated to conserving koalas in the wild and the group relies on grants and donations to keep it going. Koalas are gradually heading towards extinction and Vanda is Jan thanking Vanda passionate to help them. Their main hazard is caused by land clearance, development, road accidents and other animal attacks. They are also affected by flood/drought conditions, fire and natural predator attacks (carpet snakes, etc). They also suffer from diseases that are gradually being treated through research. Our next get together will be on March 6 when we will visit Wildlife HQ at the Big Pineapple. Those who want to car pool should meet at the Beerwah Library carpark at 9.30am. Re: Climate change letters

I try to avoid writing letters to the paper about climate change because I figure most people turn off when they see what the author is writing about. But the two letters in last week’s issue, one from Sel Hopley and another by serial letter-writer Jon Woodlands, cannot be allowed to pass without comment. Neither of these letters, you’d have to say, were particularly helpful, or, for that matter, factual. Amongst a welter of statistics about how many coal-fired power stations there are in the world, Mr Hopley infers that CO2 is not a pollutant. Mr Woodlands, for his part, rabbits on about things he finds in those peculiar corners of the internet where they still believe the world is flat. Neither of them appear to have been reading the news. Germany, one of the most industrialised nations in the world, with an economy ranked fourth and wealth built on coal and manufacturing, will be coal-free by 2038. California, with the fifth biggest economy in the world, has pledged to be operating on 100% renewables by 2045. Sweden will be producing 100% of its electricity from renewables by 2040. What these two gentlemen don’t seem to understand is that the science on all this is well and truly in. The debate is over. No amount of quotes from dodgy websites will cut it anymore. It is time to move on. The world is changing. It’s happening very rapidly and it needs to do so because the effects of too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are being experienced all around the world. Glaciers contracting, ice shelves disintegrating, ocean acidity, record breaking heatwaves causing droughts and fires. Cyclones. If it hasn’t yet, it’s coming to a place near you soon.

CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

Neighbourhood Centre crisis support

We have all been saddened by the catastrophic floods in Townsville and the surrounding area. It is at times like these that neighbourhood centres are under a huge strain as they cope with a massive influx of people in need. Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has been in touch with Sandra Elton from NOTCH (North Townsville Community Hub). She said that many of their local suburbs had gone under and many families are now presenting for emergency needs. NOTCH runs services remarkably similar to our own in Maleny. Check them out at https:// notchdeeragun.weebly.com/about.html. The next few weeks will stretch NOTCH to the limits. Luckily the centre was not flooded, but you can imagine the trauma of their clients, not to mention that of their own volunteers. They are already receiving donations of clothes and as many other goods as they can handle, however extra funds would be greatly appreciated. Families who have lost everything or been displaced with nothing but the clothes on their backs, kids who have just returned to school many now need to replace expensive uniforms, books, bags and shoes. There are people who have lost their homes/livelihoods who don’t qualify for government assistance who will need help to completely re-establish their homes. The recipients are so grateful for any help. Our aim is to raise $10,000. It sounds a lot, but let’s give generously, not just thinking of Townsville, but also in thanks and relief that we are

not ever likely to be faced by such a disaster. Donations can be made by going to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre website and clicking on Crisis Support, or go direct to www.malenync. org.au/crisis-support/, or they can be made at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. One of our MNC members is so concerned about the size and scale of the Townsville emergency that she has offered to double all donations, so please help us raise the other $5,000. Frances Harper MNC committee member

Australia was at the forefront of change when we had an emissions trading scheme. Were it not for self-serving politicians – without question operating under the influence of those who own coal mines – this country could have been reaping the benefits of technological innovation for the past seven years. It’s time to relegate this mob (with their lies about everything and anything, their awful incompetence on every front, their jokes about coal) to the wilderness and get down to addressing the problems we’ve created. Our planet will be better for it, our lives will be better for it and our economy will be too. Steven Lang Maleny

I was somewhat dumbfounded with Mr Jon Woodlands’ letter in the February 20 edition of GC&M News. He claimed that NASA scientists said that the Sun was cooling, a fallacious claim. The NASA website does contain questions, such as: “What happens if the next solar cycle becomes less active? Will we go into a new ice age? “ Here is the answer: “No. Even if the amount of radiation coming from the Sun were to decrease as it has before, it would not significantly affect the global warming coming from long-lived, human-emitted greenhouse gases. Further, given our greenhouse gas emissions to date and those expected to come, the evidence points to the next ‘ice age’ being averted altogether.”

Local Eats When you dive even further into NASA, you discover the Global Land-Ocean Temperature Index. From that it establishes that 18 of the 19 warmest years have occurred since 2001, with 2018 being the warmest yet. It seems therefore that any assertion that the cooling Sun also cools the Earth is total rubbish. Mr Woodlands' claims that Perth's water supply is filled, is incorrect - 50% of Perth's potable water comes from desalinisation plants and groundwater. Although spring rains in 2017 and 2018 were slightly above average, Perth's water storages are far from full. As at February 2019, Perth water storages were at 50% capacity, according to the WA Water Corporation. The Lowy Institute recently conducted a poll in which they asked about climate change. It found that 59% of respondents agreed with the statement: “climate change is a serious and pressing problem. We should begin taking steps now even if this involves significant costs”. It is fortunate that we live in a democracy, as democracy is good for all of us. The majority of us are on a journey to address the issue of climate change, and the majority gets its way after an election. Ken Dyer Landsborough

Pets on public transport

Currently, there seems to be discussion that affirms the idea that pets should travel on public trains, buses and city cats. I am a public transport user, but refuse to share a confined space with dogs and cats; nor do I want to turn up for a doctor’s appointment brushing off animal hair, smelling like someone’s furry friend, eyes watering and sneezing. What is the public interest in this case? Lee Meyers Landsborough

Re: 50% renewable energy targets

Having worked for four power companies in five states since the early 1990s, my experience leads me to believe that the author of the letter in GC&M News, February 20 edition, needs to reassess his view of the industry. He believes Victoria and South Australia have expensive and unreliable grids. The grids in those states are exactly the same as the grids in other states. The difference is where the power that flows along them comes from and how was it generated. South Australia has no coal. The only source, Leigh Creek, ran out of coal a number of years ago. Victoria is just about to exhaust the last of its coal. Both of those states had brown coal (lignite), which has to be pulverised and then dried with hot air before it will burn. It generates much less heat than black coal (anthracite) and is less effective. So both states are pushing ahead with renewable generation because they have to. South Australia tried buying coal from NSW years ago and found the price prohibitive. Both states buy power from other states. Victoria buys some from Tasmania (hydro) and NSW. South Australia still buys some from Victoria and some from NSW but the price they have to pay is high. Power is traded between states and the price varies up or down by the minute. I was in the South Australian trading room in the mid-1990s on a 40C January day when air conditioning use was high. For a time the price for power from NSW almost hit $1000MWh. Queensland has, for a long time, sold power over the border. It’s a very profitable business if you are a seller. The word count restriction on letters to the editor does not allow me to begin to question his comments on solar power, which I will leave for another letter. Ronald Day Landsborough

Living - Arts Chasing light

Billy Mentiplay is a professional photographer based on the Sunshine Coast. His company, Lumen Black Photography, has produced work for a wide range of clients from local businesses to national organisations. He typically produces photography and video for advertising, portraits and events, but it is within the subjects of landscapes and nature that Billy feels he can really express himself. His work is on display in his exhibition ‘Chasing light’, a collection of landscape and nature photographs Billy has taken over the past two years. He says his work as a professional photographer brings him much enjoyment and exciting challenges, but nothing compares to the feeling of scouting a location, waiting for the day when the weather is just right, and patiently watching the sky change while the scenery comes to life in front of your eyes.

This exhibition of 11 framed photographs is the result of many long hikes, late nights, bruises, bug bites and being rained on; all in the pursuit of a perfect photograph. “I’ve had a lot of fun getting to this point and I hope everybody who comes to see [the exhibition] likes the results,” Billy said. Billy’s exhibition is currently at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street Beerwah, until March 31. It will be officially opened at 6pm on March 1. Health Check Tummy troubles? with Beerwah Amcal

There could be a very good reason for this. Coeliac disease is one of Australia’s fastest growing autoimmune diseases. Coeliac disease attacks the small intestine when gluten, a common protein found in grains, is ingested. Symptoms can include anything from fatigue, diarrhoea, constipation, joint or muscle pain/stiffness, mouth ulcers and weight loss to more serious symptoms such as abdominal pain/bloating, itchy skin rashes, reflux, anaemia, osteoporosis and pregnancy complications. People with some autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes may be more prone to coeliac disease. With such a varying range of symptoms and coupled with the fact that some people experience none of these at all, many people simply don’t realise they have this disease. It is estimated 70% of people with coeliac disease are undiagnosed. The good news is that a recent new test can now measure coeliac antibodies using a tiny finger prick blood sample, which only takes about 15 minutes. It can determine whether you may have markers of coeliac disease and is now available at Beerwah Amcal. If you are experiencing any of the conditions detailed above, don’t ignore them. Drop into Beerwah Amcal pharmacy today to arrange a test or book online at www.amcal.com.au/bookings.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD/TMJ) with McCloy Dental

TMD is a chronic pain condition that affects the jaw joint and its associated structures such as the neck and chewing muscles. It affects more women than men at a rate of 4:1. People with TMD are more likely than people without pain to have suffered trauma, to grind and clench their teeth, to suffer from other forms of chronic pain such as migraine, tension headache, irritable bowel and fibromyalgia, and have non-painful TMD symptoms such as jaw noise and limitation of the mandibular opening. The most common forms of TMD pain are arthralgia, or pain in the joint itself, and myofascial pain (muscle pain). Pain that is coming from the joint may be related to a disc displacement disorder, from a bad trauma to the head area, or a click or intermittent locking. It can also be related to degenerative, psoriatic or rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune or congenital disorders. Myofascial pain is experienced by about 70% of the population. It can be localised to the head and neck region or can be more widespread. In general, the management of myofascial pain involves stress management, regular exercise, good posture and body mechanics, healthy diet and adequate restorative sleep. To find out more about what treatment is available phone 5495 7988 and make an appointment at McCloy Dental at Caboolture.

Health &Beauty Symptoms of ovarian cancer

Learn braiding for fun and fundraising

February was Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Cancer Council Queensland is calling on Queensland women to get to know and understand the symptoms of the disease to give themselves the best prospects for surviving it. Ovarian cancer is one of the hardest cancers to detect and is the leading cause of death from gynaecological cancer, with less than half of all women diagnosed surviving five years. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said there was currently no effective screening test for ovarian cancer “so keep it on your radar, know the symptoms and seek advice from a health professional if you’re concerned about your cancer risk”. “Symptoms include increased abdominal size or bloating, unexplained abdominal or pelvic pain, feeling full and/or having difficulty eating, unexplained weight gain or loss, back pain, indigestion, diarrhoea, changes in menstrual pattern, bleeding after menopause, pain during sex, nausea or excessive fatigue,” Ms McMillan said. Ovarian cancer can be very difficult to diagnose early because symptoms can be vague and similar to other common illnesses, which is why the organisation is urging all women to be vigilant. “When you have symptoms that are new for you, have persisted for two weeks or more and you have them on all or most days, then it's time to see your doctor,” Ms McMillan said. More information about Cancer Council Queensland and ovarian cancer is available via 13 11 20 or https://cancerqld.org.au.

Hinterland Kids Kids pet education program to help reduce dog bite injuries Sunshine Coast Council has kicked off its pet education for kids program, which is designed to help children understand how to interact safely with dogs. The free program is offered to all Sunshine Coast childcare centres, preschools and kindergartens with children aged between 3-5 years. Presented by council’s pet education officer, with the help of trusty sidekicks Sunny the cat and Sasha the dog, the fun and interactive presentation helps to teach children about being a responsible pet owner and how to avoid being bitten by a dog. Community programs portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said council was committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and helping to keep kids safe from dog attacks. “Sadly, there are hundreds of children across Australia who are victims of dog bite injuries each year and most children are bitten at home by their family dog,” Cr McKay said.

Hannah Maloney, response services education officer, with kids from Bella Grace Childcare Centre “Children under five are most at risk, which is why our pet education for kids program is designed especially for young children.” If you would like the pet education for kids program to be presented at your centre, contact council on 5475 7272 or email animals@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Wedding Guide

Local wedding day romantic, magic and full of love By Sonia Clark At GC&M News we always love a local wedding, so when we heard that Glass House Mountains couple Den and Rebekah (Bec) Bolton had recently celebrated their special day at Beerwah Hideaway, we thought it would make a lovely story for our readers. We caught up with Bec to find out a little more about their dream day. Q: How long had you been planning your wedding? Den originally proposed to me about five years ago, and at the time we intended on getting married 12 months from our engagement, but I ended up having another baby (Kamryn, now three years old), we bought a block of land to build our first home on … so our wedding got put on hold until the right time came along. Twelve months before our wedding in September we decided that it was now or never so we knuckled down and started really planning it.

Q: Tell us a about the theme of the wedding? I am a hopeless romantic so I just wanted everything to be as romantic as can be. We had a romantic, boho rustic theme going on and chose a colour palette of soft pinks, deep reds, burgundy and whites. Q: How many guests attended and who was in your wedding party? We had 74 mainly family and very close friends. We just wanted to have the people at our wedding who were closest to us, the ones we see on a regular basis and the ones who we knew would be in our lives forever - and the people we knew would stick around to enjoy our wedding day and reception with us until the end of the night. Den's brother Rob was the best man and my sisters Tahliah and Missy were my bridesmaids. My brother Jed walked me down the aisle and gave me away, and our son Quinny was the page boy and ring bearer. Our daughters Claire and Kamryn were the flower girls. Q: The flowers looked gorgeous. Who did them? Beerwah Flowers and Gifts. Sue is amazing and she did the best job - just so beautiful! She did the table flowers, bouquets, button holes and hair flowers with a mixture of roses and chrysanthemums in soft pinks, deep reds, burgundy and white to match our romantic colour scheme. Q: What were some of the highlights of the day? Our ceremony was our highlight! We chose to do a handfasting/tie-the-knot ceremony as well as the traditional ring ceremony, which was beautiful because it gave us a chance to include our three kids.

(photos by Adore You Photography by Annie Hossack)

Den and I held hands while the kids, Rob (best man) and Tahliah (my sister/matron of honour) draped the ribbons one by one over our hands and Rob tied the knot for us while Louise Forster-Ferrari, our celebrant, did a reading for us. Louise also acknowledged my mum who passed away when I was 22. Den and I also wrote our own vows. (As a muso, Den is really gifted at writing, so his vows were very special. He has a beautiful heart). Den chose ‘Stone Cold’ by Jimmy Barnes for our first dance, which was super romantic and so Aussie! Q: In your own words how would you describe your wedding day? We adored our wedding day. It was romantic, magic and full of love, laughter, smiles and dancing. Our wedding day was everything we dreamed of thanks so much to each other, our family, our friends and the wonderful people involved in the ceremony.

Trending tips for hinterland brides

With decades of unique and bespoke headpiece design expertise, Brenda Treasure from LilyM Millinery Supplies and Unique Headpieces knows a thing or two about creating exquisite headpieces – especially for special occasions. GC&M News chatted with Brenda to find out more about her trending tips for bridal headpieces. Brenda said a trend she is seeing more, especially around the hinterland, is a country bride look that combines a trilby type headpiece worn to the back of the head and decorated with fresh flowers. “It’s lovely to see this look that is well suited to our rural outlook. The brides look absolutely gorgeous and I’m seeing a lot of earthy tones and colours used in the hats such as caramels and bone, adorned with fresh flowers,” Brenda said. Another trending tip for 2019 is the resurgence of closely fitted headpieces using lace detail to match the dress. Brenda said she was creating lace headpieces pieces that used a very fine wire frame and could be embellished with crystals and beading. Her final tip is the bridal vine that weaves and braids the hair. Brenda said this gorgeously whimsical look was becoming very popular as it incorporates crystals and beads to create a vine that looks simple yet stunning. A special occasion befits a specially created headpiece or hat, and Brenda has a wealth of ideas and designs to help create a beautifully bespoke piece that will enhance any outfit for any members of the bridal party. For more creative inspiration visit Brenda’s Facebook page, LilyM Millinery Supplies and Unique Headpieces, or online at www.lilymmillinerysupplies.com.

Surprise! It’s a wedding

By Sonia Clark When guests rocked up to Kylie Cherry’s 40th birthday celebrations in December last year, they were pleasantly surprised to discover that Kylie and her long-time beau Tony Booth would also be getting married on the day. Kylie said she and Tony decided to have a surprise wedding as they both just wanted something small and intimate that suited them. People thought they were attending ‘Kylie’s Kiwi All Blacks’ themed party, so most people wore black, although a couple of friends wore Footrot Flats inspired outfits, which proved entertaining once they realised it was actually a wedding. “We didn’t want all the drama and expense that goes with planning a big wedding and we just wanted to share our special day with the people that meant the most to us,” Kylie said. Tony and Kylie first met at the local Glasshouse Mountains Tavern when Kylie (who was functions manager at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at the time) had just finished organising an event. Friends convinced her to stay for a quick drink and she met Tony who was there for his cousin’s 30th birthday. As they say, the rest is history and the two

have been a couple for more than seven years. Upon arrival at Kylie’s birthday party, a few guests had an idea that it may be more of an occasion when they saw Kylie and Tony were a little over dressed for a 40th birthday. With happy smiles all round, many of the friends remarked that it was “about time”, though some joked that they were not really dressed for a wedding. Kylie said only a handful of people knew about the surprise, including local celebrant Adrienne Heppel (who wore a traditional Maori cloak to acknowledge Kylie’s New Zealand heritage), Kylie’s family from New Zealand and both the witnesses, who also travelled from afar. “Our younger boys (Levi and Bray) had no idea, as we knew they wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret, but our older children were aware just a few months prior,” Kylie said. "I also had to tell my co-worker Kylee, as most of my planning was done from my business, Beerwah Stationery, so she definitely needed to be in on the secret.” The wedding was fairly straight forward to plan. The couple had the celebrant and caterers booked well in advance and then just organised everything else themselves for their backyard nuptials. They made their own bar and arbour structures, and used flowers from their garden to decorate the arbour. Kylie’s mum and a family friend set up the grazing table, and family members who were staying with

the couple in the week leading up to the wedding pitched in and helped set up frames for tarps, fairy lights and all the little last-minute touches. “Having the wedding at home made it really easy to plan and set up. The best part of the event though was being surrounded by my family, as it was the first time in over 20 years that my siblings and I had all been together,” Kylie said. On the day, most guests had arrived by 3pm with the surprise ceremony booked for 3.30pm. Marriage celebrant Adrienne said it was the most top secret wedding she had ever participated in, which she clearly enjoyed, particularly getting Tony and the guests to do the haka as Kylie arrived. “The haka was to give spirit and strength from the males and heart and love from the females,” Adrienne said. The weather was definitely not on the couple’s side on the day, as it absolutely poured rain. They even had to stop the ceremony to move it under cover, but it couldn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and, in Adrienne’s words, “it was like the ancestors were raining down tears of joy”.

The local Jewellers Bench Nestled within one of the most iconic buildings in Landsborough is the gorgeously creative wonderland of The Jewellers Bench. Beautifully showcased within the walls of The Old Bank in Landsborough is the hinterland showroom and workshop of mother and son jewellers, Shari and Donald Wright. Shari is an intensely creative jeweller with decades of experience in the industry. Her son Donald is also a fully qualified jeweller and goldsmith proving that artistic talent does run in families. Together they create and manufacture unique and inspired pieces, while also offering a full service menu of jewellery repairs, resizes and redesigns. Shari presents her collections regularly at international events across the globe from Europe to America and Asia. This year she will be doing a number of “trunk shows” – high-end pop-up events that attract buyers from around the world.

Bespoke collections have been inspired by diverse themes such as oceanic, Alice in Wonderland, medieval and Venetian masks, and have been well received both in Australia and overseas. Both Shari and Donald bring a range of skills to their design and manufacturing work, and can custom make beautifully individualised items from contemporary design to more classical pieces. Shari explains that a unique aspect of her business is that when you have something made at The Jewellers Bench you deal directly with the person creating the piece. “By dealing directly with us, our clients are sure to get exactly what they want. Commission pieces and personalised engagement and wedding rings are our specialties, and we are always happy to provide suggestions or creative guidance if needed.” Shari relocated to the hinterland to be closer to her Dad, Donald Powell, who is a renowned sculptor and carving artist. Shari shares his love of hand carving and some of his work is also featured at The Jewellers Bench. The move also allowed Donald to learn more about the craft from his grandfather. While many of the jewellery pieces on display have an element of fantasy or whimsy to them, there are also a number of more understated and very affordable pieces using natural materials such as wood, which are perfect for the more relaxed feel of the Sunshine Coast. Hand crafted ‘statement rings’ are also proving very popular as clients look to invest in one-off pieces that capture the individuality of the person wearing them, as well as the repurpose and redesign of old jewellery into something that can become a gorgeous keepsake.

With an onsite workshop, the team also specialise in repairs and resizing. No job is too small and Shari is keen to provide the local community with all the convenient services a local jeweller can provide. “Items don’t need to be sent away for repair – ring resizing, restringing and jewellery repairs are often so much more reasonably priced than people may think. Clients can also bring in old gold, broken pieces of sentimental jewellery or old family jewellery and have it revived into a piece to be worn and treasured. Our clients often comment on just how affordable this design service is.” To find out more, why not drop in to the shop at 38 Cribb Street Landsborough or call Shari or Donald on 0421 587 260.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in March

• Wait until the rain eases a bit before giving

your lawn a fertiliser boost coming into autumn, otherwise it will just wash away and be wasted. • At the start of the month, put spring flowering bulbs, such as freesia, anemone, ranunculus and daffodil, in the fridge vege crisper and plant out at the end of the month. • Plant strawberry runners towards the end of the month into well-mulched beds with lots of compost and manure. • Stake dahlias and chrysanthemums if they’re starting to get tall. • Try not to plan any work in the backyard that will need heavy machinery or vehicles until the soil dries and firms up. Otherwise you risk compacting the ground and churning up soggy soil – not a good practice. • Keep an eye on your citrus for aphids and leaf miner. They breed up quickly in moist conditions and damage new growth. Treat as required with pyrethrum spray or white oil. • White cedar caterpillars are on the move. Wrap a hessian bag around the trunk of the tree and check underneath for the damaging insects as they congregate there during the day. Squash or spray them with a pyrethrum spray. • Plan where you would like to plant your bare-rooted roses when they become available in winter. Select the sites and prepare them by digging in manure and mulch. Do the same about a month before planting and your bare-rooted roses will thrive. Vegetables Plant carrots, leeks, beans, cauliflower, lettuce, silverbeet, spring onion, radish, capsicum, cucumber, eggplant, sweet potato, tomato, melons, pumpkin, zucchini, broccoli, kale, cabbage, beetroot, garlic, celery, coriander, fennel and parsnips. Flowers Plant alyssum, petunia, marigolds, sweet pea, columbine, calendula, cyclamen, dianthus, salvia, everlasting daisy, forget-me-not, gaillardia, lobelia, lupin, nasturtium, polyanthus, schizanthus, Iceland poppy, primula, snapgragon, cleome, sunflower, verbena, wallflower, cineraria, phlox, cornflower, nemesia, pansy, statice and viola.

Ask Brownie,

I hope you can help me. I love to grow gladiolus when the time is right. I have a raised garden made out of roofing iron sheets put together. My daughter filled it with a few different soils and dynamic lifter but I keep getting a rust on the leaves when they come up. It does not affect the flowers but looks terrible on the leaves. Can you please tell me how I can stop the rust? We have tried different sprays, etc but it still comes. Hope that you can help me. Thank you Mrs J Hawkins, Beerwah Hello Mrs Hawkins When I was a kid, one of my uncles was a prize-winning gladioli grower … but that was down at Wollongong where they don’t have our humidity. You see, the gladdies we grow as ornamentals are mostly from temperate parts of the world, so they’re not best suited to our subtropical climes. Gladiolus rust is a worldwide problem for both home gardeners and commercial growers. You’ve done all the right things – raised garden for drainage and good soil preparation - perfect for growing show-stopping gladdies. And you said you’ve tried different sprays (I’m hoping fungicides). In our climate you’ll never beat the rust disease, but you can limit its impact. The trick is to lift the bulbs (more properly called corms) out of the ground after they’ve flowered and died back. After lifting, clean the soil off and let them dry. Cut any residual leaf material off as well. Clean up any old leaves off the top of the garden bed and throw them in the bin. Treat the bulbs with a powdered fungicide and store them in a dry place that doesn’t bake in the sun, which can happen in a small shed. If you can’t lift the bulbs, leave them in the ground but make sure you cut them right back to ground level and really clean up the old leaves. Maybe give the area a spray with a fungicide to kill off any remaining spores. Plant them in late winter – strip off any of the papery layer on the corm which may still have rust spores. Water and feed them and watch them grow. But you’ll need to treat them with a sprayable fungicide (‘Rose Shield’ is good and it will help control grasshoppers too). The label will tell you how often – probably monthly will be fine. But don’t wait until you see the fungus – it’s too late then. Then in about 80 days’ time, they’ll be flowering better than ever.

From the churches

Aaron Jackson Church on the Rise

God, You are good and do good. Teach me Your ways In one of our Sunday services recently we prayed for the local chaplains we support. In total, they represent nine local schools and the Beerwah Bulldogs Rugby League Club. I was reminded of this scripture that God is good. Too often God gets a bad rap. When things go bad it’s somehow His fault. But when we get to know who God is and all the good He has done, we start to see things in a very contrasting light. God is full of grace and truth. His heart for humanity is that all would know Him more than they just know about Him. How do we get to know God? Read our Bible. If you don’t know where to start, read John in the New Testament. Consistently and regularly attend a local church. Have God conversations and ask yourself “Who is Jesus to me?

Jesus asked His disciples this question: “Who do men say that I am? The revelation that came from that question became the rock upon which the church was built. Jesus said: “I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. The message of good news is wrapped in love, mercy, grace and truth. His spirit brings life and inspires people to pursue their God-given future with hope. What an exciting way to live. Connect or reconnect with God. It’s entirely up to you. You’ll be glad you decided to discover Him for yourself. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

Sport Cricket at Landsborough Contributed by Deb McIntyre The Landsborough Cricket Club was one of the lucky Sunshine Coast clubs selected to host the under 15 national championships last week. With four games over the week, it was great to see such upcoming talent in these young men. The club would like to thank Maleny Dairies, Bucks

Bakery, Woolworths, IGA Landsborough and IGA Beerwah for their donations for this event. The games hosted across the four days were WA vs Tasmania on day one, NSW vs ACT Country on day two, QLD vs Vic Metro on day three and SA vs Vic Country on day four.

Glasshouse District Little Athletics Contributed by Renee Hackney Recently 51 of our young athletes competed at the regional championships held over a weekend at Noosa smashing their PBs and trying their best in various events. We had amazing results with 32 of our athletes qualifying for the state championship to be held in Townsville towards the end of March. The sportsmanship of our young contenders was fantastic with lots of cheering and support for each other. Our team captains, Sophie Trevan and Spencer Doneman, were also farewelled at this event with under 17s from surrounding clubs, as this is the graduating age for Little Athletics. They have done the club proud, with both qualifying for the state championships to end their Little Athletics years. Congratulations to all the young athletes who competed at Noosa and best of luck to those heading to Townsville.

Sunshine Orienteers Contributed by Deb Gordon Sunshine Orienteers will show you how to read a map and a compass so you can find targets on a map of the local park and surrounds. Their next event is on Sunday, March 17 at Centenary Lakes Caboolture. As Moreton Bay Regional Council is subsidising a foot and a mountain bike activity it will only cost $5 per adult with kids free.

To register search for Healthy and Active Morten Bay, then type ‘orienteering’ and look for event # 518 for mountain bike and # 519 for foot event. You can find more information about Sunshine Orienteers from their website www. sunshineorienteers.com.au. They are also on Facebook and Instagram at ‘Sunshine Orienteers’ or you can email info@sunshineorienteers.com.au for more information.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Tennis under lights will start this Friday night at Witta from 6pm. All welcome. In the first three sets of the match against Maleny Magics the games were long and hard fought. Witta Wagtails were doing well but the Magics came out winners on the day. It was a great day of tennis. The Wildcats had the bye. Whistlers played at Witta against Caloundra Racquettes. It was a very windy day and we all struggled with the wind. There were lots of rallies

and deuces, with balls going in unpredicted ways. Wind was the winner, but we managed to get it with us. The score was 48-6 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. We were happy to see Maree Hooley drop by. We all hope she has a speedy recovery. Social tennis is on Monday at 8am and Saturday at 1pm. All welcome. For court bookings call 0437 295 501 or go to www.wittatennis.com.au.

The first jackpot triples is approaching in March, so get your teams organised with $600 up for grabs. The summer season of business bowls kicked off last Wednesday at 6.30pm. There were many new faces, which is great to see, along with a few familiar ones. Thanks again to Terry and Liz Little and a big thanks to Bill Tumbridge who works tirelessly putting teams together and making phone calls.

Club Glass House is close to finalising a social bowls membership. If you do not want to play pennant, Q7s, Gr8s and club championship, you can pay $17 a year instead of $95. But remember, you can only play social and you are not eligible for committee positions or to vote on any bowls issues. More information to come on how it will work. Thursday, February 21: Social, open pairs - winners of the day were Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson with the highest winning margin in either game of +12. Runners up with the lowest winning margin were Chris Dougan and Jimmy Tatum on a count back with +1. Lucky draw went to Len Skerry and Dean Shaw. It’s is looking like Kerry Capern Day will be a full green, which shows how much he meant to our club. See you all at 8.30am this Sunday with $30 for a roast or fish and chips for lunch, raffles drawn after lunch and hot nibbles after the game.

The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Graeme Glover Got to love unpredictable weather. Everyone comes out to play. That's what happened at Maleny Bowls Club in the past week. It was great to see eight bowlers last Tuesday morning for a game. Remember this is open to all levels of membership and visitors, with numbers determining the format. For more details contact 2019 board member Joe Walters. What a great round two for the Wednesday night bowls with some new faces attending these fun nights. Close games, golden points. Big news for our Wednesday night bowls crew is an announcement that the upgrade to lighting is under way. Now we will all be able to see if a toucher is a toucher. We always believed everyone. Don Ginns and Tom Ukola will be very pleased with the news of new bright lights. The board responded to their pleas and all will be revealed soon. The marvellous community support for this weekly event is making this upgrade possible. Great support and money well spent on future-proofing bowls in the Maleny community. Friday Scroungers was at its best. Great to have Mike Edwards, Angela Griffin and Richard Long joining in as new members to this individual draw format of the game. It is very challenging but that is why we have handicaps. We had 23 bowlers who fought it out over a number of rinks with some excellent bowls. Great to see some new faces in the winner’s circle. Congratulations to Richard Bond, Kathy King, Brett Gillis, Ben Fawns, Alex Zerafa, Doug McGufficke, and Marg Ginns. Well played to all the winners but remember the price you pay for winning is extra work for the handicapper. 40

Contributed by Ken Barker On Thursday, February 14, Bev Sockhill and Brenda Winter played two games of golf against Sally Adams and Gary Winter beating them 7–5 in the first game and 7–6 in the second. Ken Barker, Frances Harper and Gillian Bradley played a game of ricochet with Ken scoring eight hoops while Gillian and Frances made four apiece. Vince Carbery and Nick Cram put on a late burst after being neck-and-neck at afternoon tea to win against Donna Manning and Kath Smith 17–9. A steward’s inquiry is pending on what was in the tea. It being the third Friday of the month on February15 we had a pleasant visit from 11 players from the Caloundra group. Brenda and Gary resumed their golf rivalry on Sunday, February 17, with Brenda still ahead 7-5. Meanwhile on lawn two Helen Andrews and Kath went down to Sarah Widin and Ken Barker 13-6. A big congratulations to Donna Manning for completing her refereeing course. This is a two-day course with a rigorous examination on the second day. Referees do a great service to the club. Stuart Craig is pictured approaching hoop two with his blue ball. He will strike the blue ball to leave the yellow ball behind the hoop and the blue ball just in front so that when he runs the hoop he will be able to roquet the yellow and continue his turn. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showground from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are on the lawns at 2.10pm for 2.30pm start on Thursdays and Sundays. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs The wedding

ARIES March 21 - April 20 Feelings that have been held in, or repressed, can come bubbling up to the surface. An adventurous mood can get you into trouble. Keep on the tried and true safe pathway rather than straying too far off the beaten track. Keep some of your actions quiet and undercover as there is no need to call too much attention to yourself this week. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 From the 26th to the 28th a supportive planetary aspect between the Sun and Mars indicates improved health and vitality. As the month concludes your workload should ease. Confidence and optimism added to by compassion, are the wind beneath your wings when tackling a power project. You have determination guiding you. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 As the month concludes your health zone is highlighted. Select wholesome foods, drink some purified water and get plenty of exercise for the last week of this month. Don’t bother with any experiments as it would be better to wait until the next New Moon. Lunar aspects heighten opportunities to work out practical arrangements. CANCER June 24 - July 22 You may have the syndrome called “the buyer’s remorse” which follows a shopping spree. This might have taken place under what we call a void-of-course Moon. Keep the receipts of any purchases this week. Someone around you is complaining but we suggest not to add to any gossip. Courage is contagious now!

The wedding ceremony came to the point where the minister asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom. The moment of utter silence was broken when a beautiful young woman carrying a child stood up. She starts walking slowly towards the minister. The congregation was aghast - you could almost hear a pin drop. The groom's jaw dropped as he stared in disbelief at the approaching young woman and child. Chaos ensued. The bride threw the bouquet into the air and burst out crying.

Week Beginning 27/02/2019

Then the groom's mother fainted. The groomsmen started giving each other looks and wondering how to save the situation. The minister asked the woman: "Can you tell us why you came forward? What do you have to say?” There was absolute silence in the church. The woman replied: "We can't hear you in the back." And that illustrates what happens when people are considered guilty until proven innocent. Noel Meyers, Landsborough

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Your emotions rise to the surface with enthusiasm to do a good deed. When the Moon enters your sign there is the tendency to take the lead and run with the flow. The planets Mars and Jupiter move together under favourable aspects to encourage you and others to trust and depend on each other. Display improved initiative now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 You may see some revelations concerning old partners or associates. This week may see you attracted to ancient excavations. This is a week that the Moon moves into your quiet zone and you will be seeking some privacy. Then at the end of the month the Moon enters your sign and you will feel rejuvenated. You feel confident! AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 There seems to be a super salesman aspect this week, so you will enjoy colourful conversations that you need to check for facts. It may be hard to get a handle on what a friend wants, or is doing. You are sure to achieve results by a planetary aspect between the Sun and Mars. Discretion assures the best results and that with a measure of seclusion. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Aspects from Saturn and Venus favour you buying necessary supplies. The last quarter of the Moon this week is coloured by the planet Neptune, so plan good meals, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. Good planetary aspects from the energy of the Sun to the Moon in Mars encourages physical activity, especially swimming.

The last week of this month sees strong solar planetary aspects emphasising a zest for life. If you do not understand where someone is coming from, it is best if you do not even try! There are false starts, interruptions and changes coming up. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Double check and confirm appointments for this week including over the weekend. Empathy, care and compassion (as well as great multi-tasking skills!) are all personal attributes the support ladies share with patients. Why not talk to the ladies about no interest payment plans, and gain the smile you deserve this year!
