Hi Everyone... Over the past 14 or so years of reporting on local events there have been a number of times when I have been compelled to use a phrase - there was definitely a lot of love in the room. I think it would accurate to say that the Maleny schools’ Harmony Day concert was one of them. The highlight for me was before the concert started, when four of the students came to the front of the 100 plus choir and explained to the audience the significance and meaning behind the day. It is always heartwarming to see young people totally nailing concepts that are really so simple, showing they understand the concepts of respect, inclusiveness and belonging - things that many adults can have trouble grasping. It was also great to have the opportunity to see the students enjoying and sharing the occasion with their classmates and friends and, of course, seeing the pride of the parents and grandparents.

Sacrifice honoured By Lea Parkes In searing heat at Glass House Mountains on Sunday morning, Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch president Brian Machin welcomed an enthusiastic crowd of around 100 members, locals and special guests to the dedication of the sub branch’s new deck. The deck was officially dedicated in honour of Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney who died in battle in Afghanistan in 2010. Brian said the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch board considered the dedication of the deck to Jared as a fitting tribute to a Glass House Mountains soldier and the other 40 personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice during the long conflict in Afghanistan. He spoke about how the dedication reminded the wider community that the sub branch recognised all veterans and current serving members through all the theatres they operated in. The ceremony included tributes from the Queensland RSL state president Tony Ferris and the Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell. However, it was the heartfelt and personal words spoken by Jared’s widow, Becky MacKinney– Clohesy, and Lance Corporal Daniel Keighran VC – who served with Jared in Afghanistan – that reminded the audience of what the dedication meant for Jared (or ‘Crash’ as he was known) to his family and friends.

The sub branch was successful in receiving a community grant of $32,000 from the Office of Liquor and Gaming with the assistance of the sub branch’s patron Andrew Powell. The sub branch has since applied for a grant through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, which if successful will mean the deck will have a roof added, as well as new outdoor furniture and new paths to give the disabled easier access to the premises. With ANZAC Day only a few weeks away the deck will be put to good use quite soon.

With the federal election around the corner, candidates for the seat of Fisher are becoming more active. This week it’s The Greens candidate, Tracy Burton. Tracy Burton is a long serving high school teacher, including nine years in Caloundra, environmentalist and social justice activist who ran for The Greens in the 2017 state election in the seat of Buderim. “I want the people of Fisher to know that The Greens are here and we are strong. No one wants to continue down this crooked road that the LNP has led people on. This government doesn’t listen and is completely out of touch with people and the planet,” Ms Burton said. Ms Burton was born in Wide Bay and moved to the Sunshine Coast 11 years ago after living in Melbourne and Sydney where she completed tertiary qualifications in communications and education. Living in Palmwoods with her family, Ms Burton currently works in the private education sector, is a member of the Queensland Independent Education Union and produces her own educational podcast. “Education plays a vital role in providing our younger generation with the knowledge and skills needed to adapt and prosper in this everchanging world. We believe that all kids should have access to a well-funded early childhood, primary, secondary and tertiary education. And

The Greens have the policies to do this,” she said. Ms Burton is an active participant in environmental projects and believes that the Sunshine Coast needs to be preserved and protected. “We will protect the Sunshine Coast from further habitat loss due to overdevelopment and weak environmental laws. I love our coast and hinterland – I want to protect and preserve it now and into the future. This is a priority for The Greens.” Ms Burton is also a strong advocate for the rights of women to live safely and equally in society. “Through our free childcare policy, women can return to work sooner and our early childhood educators will receive the recognition they deserve,” she said. “The Queensland Greens remain committed to the sustainable transition to renewable energy, stopping large corporate donations, providing greater rights for renters and a home for all. “People are finding it so difficult to find a place to rent or an affordable place to buy here on the coast. We need to fix this, and we can with the right will and the right priorities,” she said.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Local government electoral reforms By Jenny McKay (The following is an opinion article from Cr Jenny McKay in response to the Queensland Government’s proposals to change the electoral process for local government elections in Queensland. Jenny has declared she is not running at the next council election, so her comments reflect her views as an informed ratepayer.) Voting is the most powerful tool that a community holds in judging how governments are performing. That is the cornerstone of our democracy and it is not something that should be trifled with by politicians. Yet last week, we saw Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe and the Queensland Government do just that with the local government electoral system. The minister released sweeping changes to local government legislation that the state government plans to introduce in the next month or so. Many of those changes are good and long overdue. Some were recommended by the Crime and Corruption Commission in its Operation Belcarra report and are widely supported by councils. But in the midst of this are many changes to the local government electoral arrangements that can only be described as politically motivated and not in the interests of anyone but the Australian Labor Party. To make matters worse … and here is the rub … the minister has not bothered to engage with the community locally on what these changes will mean, assist people to understand what the

implications are or allow them to have their say before he released the proposals. He is dressing these changes up as being in line with Operation Belcarra. However, changes like the introduction of compulsory preferential voting for electing councillors and public funding of local government candidates were not recommended in the Belcarra Report. Compulsory preferential voting will do two things. As it mostly benefits political parties, it will encourage greater involvement of those parties in local government – something that has largely and proudly been held at bay for over a century. It also means that you, the voter, are now forced to cast a vote for a candidate or candidates that you do not want to see elected and by doing so, your preference could help to see that person become your councillor or mayor. Better minds than the minister – including the Electoral and Administrative Review Commission, which was established in the wake of the Fitzgerald Inquiry – have also made the point that the current system is fairer than compulsory preferential voting. As for public funding of local government candidates’ campaigns, don’t you think our ratepayers should have had a say in this? I am a ratepayer and I don’t support it. For our Sunshine Coast Council, if these arrangements had been in place for the 2016

council elections it could have cost the ratepayers up to $410,000 in funding for the campaigns of candidates. This is on top of the $802,000 ratepayers paid to the Electoral Commission to actually conduct the election. The minister says that there is a cost for “clean elections”. Clearly, he hasn’t bothered to check his facts. Every state election between 1992 and 2015 was conducted under the same optional preferential voting arrangements as the local government elections, although the state parties and candidates received public funding of their campaigns from 1995. However, they had no expenditure caps in place (other than in 2012) so the parties and candidates openly courted and received donations from property developers, the unions and other interest groups. Is the minister now saying that those state elections weren’t clean? I have to say I am sick of this demonising of councils everywhere. Our minister, Stirling Hinchliffe, is supposed to be the champion of the local government system. Yet for political reasons all he wants to do is run it into the ground and paint the hundreds of hardworking councillors across this state as crooks. It is high time that this behaviour was called for what it is.

The fate of a controversial quarry development at Beerburrum will be decided at the next Sunshine Coast Council meeting this Thursday at Caloundra. The quarry application – submitted by the Barro Group in 2017 – has stirred a ground-swell of opposition from local residents who formed the Beerburrum Action Group. The residents reject the need for the quarry and highlight the impacts that the quarry and quarry trucks will have on their quiet hamlet. The group is urging the mayor and councillors to consider the impacts a quarry would have on such things as eco-tourism, with the new and exciting Trail Head development currently under way in Beerburrum. “The negative impacts of 200 trucks per day thundering through town on tourists and locals who will be coming to Beerburrum to traverse the walking tracks and take advantage of the benefits our environment has to offer, are too great to ignore,” a group spokesperson said. “The quarry has a life limited to 20 years but the peace and beauty of the national park will go on for generation after generation. Most of us would be aware that two trachyte quarries already exist in our area and one of them has a life expectancy of 50 years. “Do we really need another one in such close proximity to the two current mines? “These things need to be very carefully considered when council meets. Should our environment be sacrificed in favour of dust, noisy trucks, noisy
crushing machinery and blasting for the next 20 years? “Our community thinks absolutely not. We all want to protect our environment and develop our town, not see it compromised and ultimately destroyed,” the spokesperson said. However, in a blow to their cause, council planning staff have recommended that the development be approved at the council meeting with conditions reducing truck movements from more than 200 per day to 126. Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski has been on the front foot from day one working with the local community to get the best outcome possible. “Having now considered the report, the officer recommendations and the community submissions, I am considering moving a motion to refuse the application,” Cr Baberowski told GC&M News. “I would welcome and expect the Beerburrum community to be in the gallery at the council meeting and I’m preparing my arguments to reflect their well thought through submissions and heartfelt concerns. “I would add that I strongly agree with them that Beerburrum’s future is best served through developing its truly remarkable natural and social history attributes rather than adding another state sanctioned quarry to the area with all of the longterm impacts that come with it,” he said. As the matter is one of the first items on the agenda for the day, it is likely to be settled – one way or the other – on Thursday morning.

Support for eating disorder sufferers More support will be available for Sunshine Coast people living with an eating disorder following a $180,000 federal grant to the local charity endED. The grant was announced recently by federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace during a visit to the future site of endED Butterfly House in Mooloolah Valley. Mr Wallace said that the grant would pay for two lived-experience recovery coaches to work with local sufferers for the next 18 months. endED’s recovery coaches conduct tailored one-on-one coaching with about 40 people with eating disorders, make hospital visits, host fortnightly support groups for clients and their families, and lead twice weekly group outings to the future site of endED Butterfly House for nature driven and creative activities. endED founder Mark Forbes said the demand for eating disorder (ED) recovery coaches was outstripping supply when it came to specialised ED support. What endED had achieved to date and was continuing to achieve was literally saving lives, he said. “To have access to this funding will enable us to not only continue the work that we are currently doing but also to expand our reach. We are planning to employ more recovery coaches and establish satellite endED support services in Noosa and other under resourced areas,” Mark said. endED’s recovery coaches ensure that all clients are engaged with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of at least a GP, a dietitian and a psychologist.

endED refer them to trusted practitioners and then ensure that there is open communication among the team. They also visit those with acute ED being treated in local hospitals daily providing support, guidance and social connection. endED recovery coach Laura Chamberlain said the grant was instrumental in what they were trying to do at endED. “It will help strengthen the services that we are providing and allow us to offer more support. There is so much need out there. We will be able to get so much more support to those that are crying out for it and bring that connection and hope to people who don’t have any right now,” Laura said. This latest funding follows $3.2 million invested in June 2018 on the Sunshine Coast by the federal government in a pilot project to improve the treatment and care of 3,000 people with eating disorders in our community.

Business News Holistic vet expands hours Glass House Holistic Veterinary Services will now open its Beerwah surgery on Wednesdays. Owner Dorothea (Dorry) Hofman (pictured), who has more than 30 years of veterinary experience, said that since opening the surgery in 2013 it had been very satisfying catering to like-minded pet owners who appreciated both traditional and alternative treatments. “We’ve seen a steady increase in clients who prefer a more holistic based pet treatment,” Dorry said. “We offer a number of services such homeopathy, nutritional advice, acupuncture and herbal medicine along with conventional services such
as desexing and pet dental treatment. “We also promote titre testing for those looking for an alternative to vaccinations for their pet,” Dorry said. Veterinarian Claire Doyle, who has also joined the team, has experience in acupuncture and Chinese herbs, which have been well received by clients. The surgery is now open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am-12noon and Tuesday and Thursdays from 9am-4pm. Dorothea can be contacted on 0423 417 495.
Industry visit to Peachester Last week Beerwah local Judy Roper, who works for Steps in Caloundra, was pleased to take a group completing an employability skills training program on an industry visit to Lily M Headpieces and Millinery Supplies at Peachester. Judy had recently seen an article about Brenda Treasure from Lily M’s in the Women in Business feature in GC&M News saying Brenda was interested in mentoring young people. As a result, Judy contacted Brenda who happily
agreed to the visit and spoke to the group about her millinery business including how she managed to turn her hobby into a lucrative millinery supply business with warehouses around the world. Judy said Steps liked to tailor industry visits to particularly suit the interests of the people in the group. “In this instance, one of our team, Yasmine, has a keen interest in fashion and design and so this was a perfect fit,” she said.

At the last Maleny Commerce breakfast meeting hosted at Spicers Tamarind, state Member for Glass House Andrew Powell was called on to draw the winner of the chamber’s Live Love Shop Maleny competition that ran throughout the month of love – February. Congratulations to local Bev Hannam who won the $500 Mastercard debit card. Bev, who only had one entry in the draw, was picked from about 3000 entries. Bev is planning on paying it forward and donating some of these funds to Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said the campaign was a huge success and that it was great to see the number of local businesses who took part. “This was our first campaign in our Live Love Shop Maleny promotion and we decided to start by targeting our local shoppers to reward them for

Pat Habner
This week we thought it would be lovely to chat to this year’s recipient of the Zonta Woman of Achievement award Pat Habner. Since moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2001, Pat has generously dedicated her considerable skillset and time towards advancing the strategic and operational goals of numerous community organisations. We chatted with Pat to find out a little more about her background and now feel a little in awe of her incredible professional and volunteer capacity! Q: Can you tell us more about your professional background? In the UK, I worked for British Steel and then British Gas in emergency services, then management development and later as a quality manager. At that time the company was huge
(180,000 employees) and during that period I also studied for my MBA. I became lead assessor for the European Quality Award for three years running and won three national training awards for my work in equal opportunities - one from the Equal Opportunity Commission, one from the National Training Awards and one from Prince Charles. I also worked on projects to get more young women into science and engineering. One highlight was being invited to speak at an International Women’s Day in Westminster on women's development in the workplace. During my last six years in the UK, I worked for The Industrial Society (the UK's largest independent developer of people) as regional director for the north of England and later as head of consultancy in London. This involved meeting and consulting with some of the best known business leaders in the UK. Since coming to Australia, I have worked for myself as a leadership and coaching consultant mainly for Maximus International in Sydney. Through Maximus I have facilitated leadership programs and done business coaching for QBE, Coca Cola Amatil, News Ltd and Suncorp plus a few others. I still carry out business coaching for Maximus. Q: Tell us more about some of the work you’ve done on the Coast? I currently chair RangeCare. Previously I have helped a few small businesses both on the range and on the Coast to put together their strategic plan and create their marketing plans and I’ve
helped the Maleny Community Hall Committee by facilitating their strategic workshops for four years. I am also chair of the Sunshine Coast Regional Croquet Committee. Q: How has this skill set contributed to your work with RangeCare? Working across such a wide variety of industries and companies has helped me see that there are many different ways to succeed in business. Also, that there are some characteristics that shine through again and again - such as integrity, transparency and genuinely valuing employees. Q: How did you feel to be named as this year’s Woman of Achievement? Stunned, shocked, thrilled, amazed! After that, extraordinarily proud and honoured. It is hugely humbling to receive this acknowledgement of the huge number of hours and effort that you give, no matter how willingly, from your own local community. I cannot express the importance of this award that Zonta makes. Q: Why would you encourage others to volunteer? If you have knowledge and abilities to share and a little time to spare it is enormously satisfying to help others, particularly in your own locality. I am so often approached by our clients to be told what a wonderful job the Blackall Range Care Group are doing. I take no credit for that as it is our employees who provide that care, but I bask in their reflected glory and know that some of the work behind the scenes enables that level of care to happen.

Community News Cash for cans nothing new for Lions It was a little over 30 years ago when the Beerwah Lions Club came up with the idea of collecting empty aluminium cans to send off for recycling to help them fund local projects. The result of that Beerwah Lions’ initiative was that thousands of kilograms of empty cans went for recycling rather than becoming landfill. Over the years a bunch of dedicated fellas have set up their can collection point on the first Saturday of each month from 8.30–11am at the northern entrance of the Coochin Creek Co-op in Simpson Street at Beerwah. With the introduction of the Queensland Government’s Containers for Change program there has been a lot of attention given to the environmental implications of dumping these single use items into landfill. With many locals finding the local Containers for Change drop off system complicated and frustrating, the Beerwah Lions are keen to remind locals that they are still running their collection depot and are keen to contribute funds raised from the recycling back into the local community. Their next collection day will be on Saturday, April 6 and they are looking forward to seeing you there with your cans.
History of old church building In July this year the building that is home to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre will celebrate its 80th birthday. Planning is under way to mark the significant milestone and information is being sought about the building and photos of it throughout the past 80 years. The building was originally the St Columbus Presbyterian Church at Glass House Mountains, so it is likely there are photos in family photo albums around the area from weddings and christenings. If you can assist with information to help compile the building’s history please contact Margie Adame–West via email at maw.7me@gmail.com.

Tea on Flaxton to launch RangeCare Friends If delicious food, great company and delightful fashion sounds like the perfect way to enjoy an autumn afternoon in May, then Tea on Flaxton is for you. Tea on Flaxton, which will be held on Thursday, May 9, is the inaugural event of RangeCare Friends. Event organiser and RangeCare Friends chair Nita C Lester said this event would not only launch RangeCare Friends but also showcase some of the wonderful fashion that is donated to RangeCare’s Op Shop and raise money for the community organisation. RangeCare offers a range of in-home, social and respite support services provided by staff and volunteers to encourage people in the hinterland to live independently. Nita said those attending Tea on Flaxton would be able to enjoy tasty treats and sip on a welcome glass of champagne in a delightful private garden setting. “All the fashion that is modelled on the day – and accessories – will be available for purchase. “Because the items are bargains from RangeCare’s Op Shop, there’ll be no need to feel guilty about these retail-therapy purchases,” she joked. The event is very much a local affair with the venue being made available by Geoff and Ann Hocking who have opened their beautiful home and garden, Tanderra House, for the afternoon. “We very much support the work of RangeCare so if there is any way that we can support their efforts through fundraising activities such as Tea on Flaxton, we will,” Ann said. The organising team have been working hard behind-the-scenes to prepare for the event. “We hope that this will be the first of many events that are offered by RangeCare Friends for the benefit of members, RangeCare and the broader community,” Nita said. “Watch this space.” Tea on Flaxton will be held at Tanderra House, 11 Flaxton Mill Road, Flaxton from 1.30–4pm. To find out more or to buy your tickets, visit the RangeCare Op Shop, call into RangeCare’s Flaxton or Maleny offices, or buy online at https://teaonflaxton.floktu.com.
Rights of Nature explored Friends of the Forest and TreeSisters are thrilled to be hosting an introduction to the Rights of Nature at the University of the Sunshine Coast on April 27 from 1.30-6pm. Join the dynamic Dr Michelle Maloney from the Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA) for a lively, interactive introduction to global Rights of Nature legislation and what it means for our precious planet. Friends of the Forest (formerly Steve Irwin Way Forest Group) president Carola Fuentes said attendees would learn all about the Rights of Nature movement and how this legal structure could be applied to protect our local environment. “The Sunshine Coast has experienced massive development in recent times that is having a huge impact on our green spaces, our wildlife and our quality of life,” Carola said. “Rights of Nature offers us the possibility of a framework that can protect the places we love dearly and all that live in them such as the Maroochy River mouth, the unspoilt beach at Yaroomba and the forests in our hinterland. Come and find out what's possible,” she said. Registration is required and the cost is a donation. When registering please ensure you add a donation at checkout as this is not a free event. Friends of the Forest suggest a minimum donation of $10 but attendees should feel free to offer more if they can as the donation will go to AELA after the workshop to support its work. Bookings can be made through www.trybooking.com by searching for “The Rights of Nature explored Sunshine Coast”. The AELA is an independent not-for-profit organisation. “Dr Michelle Maloney is very kindly gifting her time and wisdom to help us understand Rights of Nature and how this fascinating legal umbrella can effect real change in our relationship and treatment of nature, as well as protect our local environment,” Carola said. “We are really thrilled to be bringing this to you. Michelle is a great speaker, very knowledgeable and wonderful at making the law fascinating.” To find out more about Rights of Nature before the workshop, there is lots of information at www.earthlaws.org.au/what-is-earth-jurisprudence/rights-of-nature/. Sharing the kindness
Students, staff and community members came together in perfect harmony last Thursday for a Harmony Day concert at the Maleny Community Centre. With more than 100 proud voices and dancers from Maleny State School, The River School and the Independent School, the important messages of the day were belonging, respect and inclusiveness for all Australians. The schools have joined together for the past few years to mark this occasion and next year are hoping to encourage a larger community audience to attend the event. Gold coin donations were collected from audience members to be donated to refugee support group Welcome to Maleny.

Support for drought relief
The Lions Club of Mooloolah Valley was busy raising funds for drought relief at the recent launch of the Mooloolah Newsagency. The newsagency recently reopened when the new owners, Matt and Natalie Lelievre and Natalie’s mum Toni, moved from Canberra and fell in love with the village atmosphere of Mooloolah Valley. They decided it was the perfect place for them to run a business. The three of them immediately fitted into the community by having a grand opening on March 16. Mooloolah Valley Lions Club accepted their offer to run a sausage sizzle on the day and all monies raised will be donated to the Lions Drought Appeal. The Mooloolah Lions Cub is very active in the area and would welcome anyone interested in helping the local community and making new friends to come along to their dinner meetings on the third Tuesday of the month at the Country Club. A welcome dinner for newcomers to the area will be hosted by the Lions Club at the Mooloolah State School on Wednesday, August 7. Details will be available closer to the event. For more information about Lions and attending a meeting please contact Lynda on 0413 443 121.

Restoring Fairview House for the future
The latest round of restoration works at the Sunshine Coast Council-owned and heritage listed Fairview House (also known as Pattemore House) at North Maleny were recently unveiled. The works included the installation of a front timber fence, the construction of a new timber pergola and new timber clothesline, the reinstatement and restoration of the front garden path, garden bed upgrades and a front timber step upgrade. The works form part of a series of planned annual conservation works guided by recommendations from Fairview’s garden restoration and recreation master plan. Cr Jenny McKay said the works highlighted the significance of Fairview House within the community. “These works demonstrate council’s commitment to protecting and preserving the future use of Fairview House,” Cr McKay said. To see the latest works you can visit Pattemore House this Saturday, March 30 from 1–4pm. Cost is $5 and children under 12 are free. You can also buy afternoon to enjoy on the verandah. Pattemore House is located at 15 Porters Lane North Maleny
Local Eats The Fat Frenchman still open for business You may have noticed a few changes happening next door to The Fat Frenchman in Turner Street Beerwah over the past week but rest assured the patisserie café will still be open as usual from 7am every day serving up the same great coffee, breakfast, lunch and sweet treats that locals have come to adore. Hinterland Body and Soul next door will be closed for this week only while the current space is renovated to include a new treatment room facility as well as expand The Fat Frenchman patisserie café to allow room for an extra 40 seats. This is great news for locals who can sometimes be seen lining up outside to sample the wares of owner Lyndon. The new expansion will include a stunning big barn door entry to the café with the new entry to Hinterland Body and Soul through the café. Lyndon is also excited that the extra space will allow him to open on Friday and Saturday nights for dinner. Hopefully starting in late April, these dinner nights will also have some talented Jazz
musicians playing into the evening and will be available to better cater for group bookings.

Support for chaplaincy program
The Mooloolah State School chaplain Mark Wysall, or Chappy Mark as he is known at school, recently presented the Mooloolah Community Association with a certificate of appreciation for supporting the wonderful program he provides for the children at the school. The association was pleased to support the chaplaincy program and made a $1,000 donation to ensure the chappy program continues for the children and their families. Mark said that as a chaplain he offered a listening ear and a caring presence for students, families and staff in times of need, bringing hope particularly when life is tough. “And let’s face it, life can be tough. Children deal with friendship issues, bullying, family breakdown and a variety of social and emotional issues. “And this is the space where the school chaplain (chappy) fits in, providing a significant adult that a child can talk to. “A chappy is a person who can provide additional social and emotional support for students, families and staff members, along with the other support people that we have in our school,” Mark said.

You Said It Editor's note
In the past few months it has been great to see GC&M News receiving more and more letters each week, sometimes on new topics, sometimes from topics previously covered, sometimes from new contributors and sometimes from regulars. I just want to assure everyone who has sent in letters that all topics, views and ideas are considered for inclusion. However, to ensure that the letters page/s are kept as interesting as possible for readers there are a number of criteria I use when selecting letters. My priority is to include a range of views from different letter writers and for regular letter writers to introduce new themes to their discussions. Where a number of letters are received on the same topic, I may not be able to include them all, but will choose a selection that cover the views expressed. Where we have had quite a bit of discussion on one topic over a number of editions, such as franking credits for retirees, we will include a range of views and then move on from that topic. My other focus with the letters page is that is it all about discussing issues, not about making personal attacks on others. Any personal attacks will be edited out of letters. Also, word count is critical. All letters will be edited down to 300 words for printing. There is no minimum word count, so if you have something to say and it is only a sentence or two please feel to share. Email letters to editorial@ gcnews.com.au or send them via our website www.gcnews.com.au.
Retirees franking credits
I believe Ken Dyer is misinformed on Labor’s proposal to abolish retirees’ franking credits. There are 900,000 retirees who will be affected by this proposal let alone the thousands who are about to retire and for those planning to retire. All of these retirees have planned their super funds upon the rules that prevailed at the time, and now Shorten and Bowen want to move the goal posts. How does anyone plan their retirement when governments keep changing the rules? Very few of these retirees are millionaires and I don’t see any Rolls Royces driving around the Sunshine Coast. The idea of retirees becoming self-funded is to take the load from our over generous welfare system. The government would save billions of dollars if all retirees were self-funded. The result of abolishing these franking credits will force many of those self-funded retirees on to a part pension. How idiotic is that. Labor stated that a couple in retirement could live comfortably on $54,000 a year. I don’t think any politician could survive on an income like that. Many people squandered the opportunity to save for their retirement and merely went on a spending spree during their lives and now they will be a burden on the taxpayer. Strange isn’t it how union based super funds will be exempt and will still receive the franking credits. Graeme Robinson Maleny My thanks to Andrew Wallace for so eloquently rebutting the Ken Dyer letter in GC&M News. I am both a self-funded retiree and a long-term professional preparer of tax returns and therefore know first-hand who will be affected by Bill Shorten’s proposal. The so called “millionaire tax dodge”, referred to by Ken Dyer in a previous issue of this paper, is nonsense. Millionaire investors will continue to use their franking credits to reduce or eliminate their income tax obligation. The proposed non-refunding 14
CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.
of excess credits will have no effect on that result. Labor is well aware of this – I‘m sure thousands of low-income retirees including myself have told Bill Shorten. This is simply a tax grab by Labor from a part of the community about whose votes he is unconcerned. Those people losing up to 30% of their annual income if this change is legislated are low income earners who invested money in shares to give themselves a degree of financial independence in their retirement. They are not the wealthy. Please support Andrew Wallace’s petition even if you have always been a Labor voter. John Rosenfeld Maleny It is hypocritical of Andrew Wallace, the Member for Fisher, in GC&M News (March 20) to portray his government as the retirees’ friend. In 2015 the LNP government took away the age pension from 91,000 part-pensioners and reduced the part-pension for another 235,000. These retirees had qualified for the pension. They were not wealthy, they were just on the margins of the new threshold. The threshold for the full age pension was also increased. In total, the LNP wiped $2.4 billion from the pockets of retirees. So much for helping the elderly. Mr Wallace claims that many retirees who receive cash refunds of imputation credits have low taxable incomes. In fact, these retirees are typically high wealth, low income and have other wealth in addition to their share portfolios, such as holding other assets in tax free superannuation funds. Low wealth households typically do not benefit from the current taxation arrangements – they have little capacity to accumulate the wealth needed to do so. Share ownership is highly concentrated among wealthier households. ABS data shows that 10% of the wealthiest households own nearly three quarters of the value of all shares in Australia. Currently Andrew Wallace, Scott Morrison and the LNP government hand out more money in these cash refunds to the 4% of the Australian public who qualify for them than they spend on public schools. Does that sound fair? Labor’s policy is not a retirement tax. It ends tax refunds for people who have a lot of income from shares and pay no tax. Larry Atkinson Maleny Andrew Wallace should be commended for his reply to the ridiculous statement in GC&M News, March 13. We should be making it easier for more people to self-fund their retirement, not making it more difficult. Labor’s policy to remove franking credits will only make the goal of a self-funded retirement harder to achieve. Labor’s policy creates a disincentive to save for retirement without making a significant impact on government funding. For example, a self-funded retiree with $800,000 entirely invested in Australian equities would have the same income as a full pensioner with $250,000 in savings, if the changes were implemented. The retiree with $800,000 would have their annual income cut by $17,000, or 30 per cent. This creates a disincentive to save for retirement. Why work hard and save that extra $550,000 if you are going to be no better off in retirement. There is no doubt that self-funded retirees would be the most heavily impacted by the removal of franking credit refunds. Stop changing the goal posts on pensioners and retirees who should be enjoying retirement not dealing with the stress and worry of lost income. R Rogers Glass House Mountains

Mr Andrew Wallace (GC&M News, 20 March) deliberately ignored an important part of Mr Ken Dyer's letter about franking credits and cash rebates. The essential point is that share owners can claim cash rebates even if their franking credits are greater than their tax liabilities. Instead, Mr Wallace concentrated on such peripheral notions that "many seniors are set to lose up to 30 per cent of their income". He ignored his own implication that, therefore, many shareholder seniors bolster their incomes by up to 30% by accepting cash handouts by dint of owning securities and no other reason. He also committed an error of omission by stating "the income that ordinary retirees receive from franking credits has already been taxed once", but ignores the fact that cash rebates can be claimed once a person's tax liabilities have been exhausted. So, behind zero liabilities, given further franking credits, people get money as they reduce their nonexistent tax liability, which Mr Wallace seems to think is reasonable in the first place. Incidentally Mr Wallace, what is an "ordinary retiree"? Peter Slade Beerwah
Christchurch
I trust and hope I am not alone when I convey my heartfelt sorrow to those victims and families of the Christchurch mosque disaster. Also I wish to support the rights of all human beings to peacefully worship the religion of their choice - not forgetting that many of us, myself included, choose not to have a religion but understand those for whom it is a fundamental right to their existence. Jane Longstaff Maleny
Lack of safe walking paths
On behalf of the residents' committee at Maleny Grove Retirement Village in Palm St, Maleny, I would like to draw attention to the dangerous lack of a safe walking path from Maleny Grove to access the footpath opposite the hospital in order to walk to town. The hazard we are forced to face is in rounding the corner of Palm and Bean streets. This necessitates walking on the roadside and trusting that no vehicle is approaching because visibility is extremely limited by the curve and slope of Tamarind Street. Many of us take this risk as we walk to and from town, or while exercising daily, but it naturally becomes more hazardous as we age. Maleny Grove was opened in 2010 and there are currently 33 residents here, many of whom like to walk this route. With four new villas nearing completion, the numbers will increase. We have drawn Sunshine Coast Council's attention to the risk we face. They say it is not a priority for the works department at the moment. What would make it a priority? A fatality? Jan Flynn President, Maleny Grove Residents' Committee
Location, location, location
Cr Jenny McKay has certainly worked hard to find a new location for Maleny’s local pool. We wish to point out that at its meeting in November 2018, Sunshine Coast Council endorsed a location conditional on the project becoming a viable option and funding becoming available. The leaseholder, the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC), will need to raise a great deal of money to meet this condition. An independent study commissioned by Cr McKay found that services alone (water supply and treatment, road access and power) will cost more at that location than at the other Precinct location Cr McKay herself initially favoured on Obi Lane. On their website MDSRC states that council unanimously approved the Maleny Sports Park as
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
the site for the new Maleny aquatic centre at its November 2018 meeting. We wish to clarify that council did not approve the term “Maleny Sports Park” at the November or at any other meeting. The 2010 Precinct Master Plan identifies the space with sport and recreation. Any other use, including sport alone, would need to be assessed under the site’s community facility zoning. However, MDSRC has gone ahead and used the term anyway - on signposts, as its email address and for communication and fundraising. We ask: why is council, which prides itself on proper process, turning a blind eye? Regarding the heritage park that MDSRC is developing with service club volunteers, we wish to point out, as we have before, that this minor amenity on a roadside plot will be the only concession to families, children and older folk seeking relaxed, outdoor recreation on the entire, nearly 200 hectare Precinct. MDSRC and the service clubs will earn infinitely more credit if they join with the community to create a proper park on park-perfect Platypus Bend. leading food and beverage innovators. As a council we recognise how much this high value industry contributes to the community and the economy. We will continue to invest in programs that support farmers and food producers to prosper via organisations like our region’s Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN), which is one of the fastest growing food clusters in Australia. Since government and industry came together in 2014, the value of production has grown by an estimated 13 per cent with dairy, horticulture, seafood and coffee leading this growth. There is a lot more work for all sectors to do, but as a start I encourage the community to please support local. Cr Rick Baberowski Division 1

Re: Local farmers
In Mr Grimard’s letter (GC&M News, March 13) he is right that more Australians need to lead with both their tastebuds and their wallets to support Australian produce and foods. Sadly this has been lacking in recent times. The food and agribusiness industry on the Sunshine Coast is valued at $700 million and features more than 900 companies, including some of Australia’s

New dark age
Re: Pollution by CO2
David Lowry (GC&M News, March 13) believes that CO² gas is a pollutant because it could be harmful to humans. Using the same logic, the dominant greenhouse gas H²O water vapour must also be a pollutant because excess H²O falling as rain causes floods and that water is definitely “a substance harmful to human wellbeing”. We breathe in atmospheric CO² at 413 parts per million (ppm) and exhale it at 40,000 ppm. That’s what we use to save lives with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Plant life is dependent on CO² for photosynthesis and scientific study shows that the increased CO² in the atmosphere has improved tree growth by 18% and plant growth by over 12% producing higher crop yields. Billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money have been spent trying to prove the “dangerous human CO² emissions” hypothesis but the evidence belies all the failed predictions of doom.
Are we heading into a new dark age where accessing information is discouraged, holding views counter to the politically correct herd incites 'public' outrage, and media outlets are the target of abuse and attempts at intimidation when efforts are made to offer diversity of opinion? Writers’ festivals in this country have become increasingly dull in recent years as in general only writers with the same political views are invited. Some universities are going the same way. The idea of safe spaces where certain ideas cannot be expressed is curious to say the least. Trigger warnings to alert students that a guest speaker is coming that may challenge the thinking of those enrolled is not only nutty but should be worrying for parents and the wider community. And it is the same story with the specific subject of climate and the associated science. It has been transformed into a religion. Only one overly simplistic hypothesis seems to be currently acceptable in the public domain but there are different scientific points of view. One of them is that we are heading into an ice age that has already begun. Caused by a cooling Sun, the reason why we should consider the views of solar-focused scientists is that they have the best track record of predicting weather and climate. They are saying we are going into a Maunder Minimum scenario [where sunspots become exceedingly rare] where the world will get much colder for many decades to come, leading to food shortages, an energy crisis, etc. I am suspect and disbelieving of anyone who attempts to shut down discussion on this issue as if on some fanatical moral crusade. I recommend the newly released book by former NASA consultant and Space Shuttle engineer John Casey, ‘Dark Winter’, about the coming ice age. Information can be liberating. Jon Woodlands Cambroon

It was a most informative lecture on the possibilities of being scammed of all your private information, bank accounts, etc. It was a great session that should be lauded by all computer owners, including Apple owners, as the mentors, Peter and Doug, volunteer their time (one-on-one) all for a gold coin. So if you need to know about the latest app or program, how to deal with your photos, or anything about computers, these are the gurus who can assist. All you need to do is ring the Neighborhood Centre and tell them what you need to learn about, and they will book a time to suit you. Glasshouse Community Centre may be contacted on 5438 7000, Monday to Friday mornings. Alycia and Ron Watson Glass House Mountains
Analysis of historical extreme weather events shows they have not increased in number or intensity and many were worse in the 20th and 19th centuries. The bogus claims by politicians and pseudoscientists that every cyclone, bushfire, flood, drought, heatwave, tornado and snowstorm is caused by human CO² emissions, are stretching our credulity? The beauty of the internet is that all the false reports and predictions can be easily checked and discredited. David cites the 374 deaths in Victoria’s 2009 heatwave as evidence of CO² warming. What about the 420 deaths in the 1939 eastern state heatwaves and the 435 deaths in the Australia-wide 1895-96 heat waves. It obviously wasn’t carbon dioxide that caused them! Sel Hopley Maleny

Living - Arts Students go to GOMA
Contributed by Tanya Hayden Year 11 students from Beerwah State High School recently had the opportunity to visit the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) and the Queensland Art Gallery. Every year the visual art department gives students the opportunity to experience world class visual artists. This year they saw the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, which featured 400 artworks by more than 80 individuals, collectives and groups that captured the energy of new art being created in Asia, the Pacific and Australia. Students were able to explore and create their own works in response to this dynamic, colourful and thought-provoking exhibition.

Maleny police honoured in painting
Lazlo Szerenyi, a community resident and talented artist of Maleny, wanted to thank the Maleny police for their commitment to the community by painting his first water colour. Lazlo featured the new police station with the hinterland as a back drop and a cartoonistic male and female officer in superhero attire. Several businesses were approached and willingly supported the gesture with messages of thanks and their signatures on the artwork. The art work was framed by Lazlo and presented to the acting officer in charge of the station, Sergeant Kelly O’Brien. The artwork is proudly displayed in the foyer of the new station for all the community to see.
MAD move
Maleny Art Direct (MAD) has recently relocated to new larger premises in Maleny, still in Maple Street, now you will find them on the other side of the road, just down from the Maleny Community Centre. They will celebrate the opening of their new space this Saturday, March 30 from 4pm. Featured artists include Lindsay Muir, Gary Myers and Vanessa Perske and community members are invited to attend.

Historic moment at the Maleny Pioneer Village Smaller museums within the Sunshine Coast Council region have been using their own methods to catalogue their collections. The council’s Heritage Unit has now recommended that all these organisations now use the eHive collection management system. This will ultimately create a network to allow the individual organisations to see what others have in their collections that may be shared for planned exhibitions. The system, which is easy to use and allows records to be kept private or shared, is used worldwide. The Maleny Pioneer Village recently catalogued its first item on eHive - a Maleny Co-operative Dairy Association Ltd ledger book with records of income and expenditure from 1912. On hand for the event was Desley Malone from the Maleny Cultural and Historical Society, Chevallum GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Contributed by Ted Prickett The Uniting and Anglican churches are determined to ensure that the church at Peachester will continue to be an active place of worship and have joined forces with this in mind. Services will be held for the foreseeable future on the last Sunday of each month from 5.30pm. They will be scripture based with an ecumenical theme. When there are five Sundays in the month the service will be followed by a shared meal in the community hall. When the Uniting Church found it impossible to sustain services with its own resources, instead of selling off the church and land, it was gifted to the Peachester Hall Committee in the hope that this historic place of worship will be preserved and hopefully continued to be used.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Psalm 22:1 This is the same author who wrote Psalm 23 where Jesus highlights the close loving relationship of the shepherd and his sheep. Psalm 22 highlights the forsakenness of God the Good Shepherd and the openness and presence of God who saves in Jesus Christ. The Latin phrases that describe this God is the Deus absconditus and the Deus revelatus, hidden and revealed. When the Good Shepherd Jesus went to the cross to give his life as the sacrificial lamb, there was indeed much darkness and hiddenness surrounding this event. Darkness came over the Earth and the curtain that separated the Holy of Holies was torn down; death looked to be the victor, but in Jesus, life ruled supreme. The cry of despair and impending separation and death is only one that we can imagine. It is bad enough when we are lost or feel abandoned; to cry out in pain and anguish and have no one to hear our cries. The season of Lent is a time for us to think about life without a carer or listener – life without the Good Shepherd to be close to us and
attend to our daily cares and needs. So much of our daily life is spent groping around in darkness and forsakenness. In the rush to find meaning and purpose in a forsaken world, we contact agencies/organisations/people to fill the void. For God the Father to be separated from His Son Jesus Christ in death was the ultimate fear. Yet in his cry of desperation, Jesus knows that he will be heard. The Deus absconditus or the hidden God, in death. The Deus revelatus, the revealed God in the resurrection. We can identify with being lost and forgotten. We can also identify with life, new life with Jesus. David, who penned those words of despair and forsakenness at the beginning, also offers us those wonderful words of comfort in Psalm 23. “Even though I walk through the valley of death, I fear no evil, for you are with me.

Hinterland Kids Bullying No Way
Students throughout Glasshouse Country were learning about and standing strong during the National Day of Action Against Bullying held on Friday, March 15.
You can’t take it back Contributed by Debbie Roberts Students at Beerburrum State School participated in lunchtime activities with Chappy Steph, including the toothpaste test - just like toothpaste once words are said you can't take them back. Students had to squeeze toothpaste out then try to put it back into the tube. NO WAY! Other activities were milkshake breathing, what is a bully and nice notes. Back in class there were more activities and talks around bullying and what make a bully. There were games of bully bingo, reading and discussing the book ‘Rock and Stick’ while other classes viewed clips on ‘Allen the Alien’ and did some role play and made puppets.
Willow and Markus making their puppets
Students stand united Landsborough State School students took a stand together to say Bullying No Way. Each class had a Bullying No Way session delivered by the school chaplain Linda Whysall with the help of her puppets, Walter, George, Louie and Ollie.
Year 7 students and Constable Sarah Harding
Beerwah High year 7 students
Each classroom was decorated with the Bullying No Way theme and the whole school was invited to wear the official colour of the day – orange. At the end of the day the whole school stood together and repeated a pledge to make a difference. This year each student wrote or drew a picture to say Bullying No Way or how to show kindness on an orange bunting flag that was sewn together to represent one voice taking a stand together. Landsborough State School says Bullying No Way.
Contributed by Tanya Hayden Year 7 students spent some class time focusing on activities and videos that strongly promoted the message that we should all say no to bullying, whether that be face-to-face with our actions or words online. Year 7 students had a special parade with a visit from Adopt A Cop Constable Sarah Harding, whose message focused on the misuse of social media for cyber bullying and also what constitutes an assault. Form representatives also led their classes to develop a ‘Say no to bullying’ poster that is now proudly displayed in classrooms. Respect, responsibility and safety are the three key expectations of the school for all of its members to adhere to. If you cannot be nice to someone then say nothing at all and leave them be. If you see someone being mean to someone else report it to a teacher or use the school’s anonymous online bullying reporting system.

Health Check Adrenal glands
Caring for your mental health
With Sallyann Stewart
Constantly stressed and tired? Catching everything that goes around? Always sick with a cold or the flu? It may be your adrenals! The adrenal glands are responsible for the production of cortisol. Cortisol helps us respond well in times of stress but constant stress causes a maladaptive response that can lead to fatigue, feelings of anxiety, poor sleep and impaired immunity. The adrenal glands contain the highest amount of vitamin C of any organ. When under stress our need for vitamin C increases, leaving our body open to oxidative stress and inflammation. Cortisol, our main stress hormone, also directly inhibits the function of our immune cells, leaving us open to infection. When under stress the adrenal glands release pulses of cortisol. Once this fightor-flight response helped us survive. Nowadays we live in an era that constantly puts us in fight-or-flight mode causing our cortisol to be constantly elevated. Over time this causes an imbalance in the cortisol diurnal pattern resulting in morning exhaustion, difficulty getting to and staying asleep and an overall inability to handle stress. Did you know that there are proven natural remedies that can help reduce stress, support your adrenal glands and improve your immunity?
with Kelly Sweeting Esprit Psychology opened its doors in Beerwah in August 2016. Since that time we have been working with individuals, couples and families to help achieve meaningful and worthwhile lives. I am a psychologist with experience in a wide range of problems including depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, addiction, relationship counselling, trauma, complex mental health conditions and workplace difficulties. I use various evidence-based interventions to support clients. Mainly, I use cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and solution focus brief therapy. The philosophy of Esprit Psychology is to encourage the people who we work with to learn and understand the problem in-hand and allow then to identify their own goals. The journey starts with finding out what the problem is and then finding the best way for the individual to address the problem. The skills that people learn in sessions are not only useful in the present but hopefully will be useful in the future. I work with individuals from 12 years old to older adults. If you receive a mental health care plan from your GP your sessions will be bulk billed. Alternatively, you can book an appointment privately. If you require further information or would like to book an appointment, please give us a call or send an email.

Health & Wellbeing Shaving Landsborough Landsborough Markets recently hosted a World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation. Landsborough local Margaret Hulm, who lost her long locks on the day, was hard at work getting sponsors before the big event. Even her loyal companion Angel happily got a spray colour to support Margaret’s efforts.
Margaret and Angel Colleen Locals also had the opportunity to have their hair coloured on the day and, as it was the day before St Patrick’s Day, Colleen Holman embraced her Irish heritage and added a touch of green. The day generated $627 and quite a bit of fun.
Acupuncture
A nutty solution Deliciously vegetarian deliciously vegetarian cooking for improving brain health Another demonstration will be held on Sunday, March
Long-term, high nut consumption could be the key to better cognitive health in older people according to new research from the University of South Australia, published in ‘The journal of nutrition, health & aging’. In a study of 4822 Chinese adults aged 55 years and over, the researchers found that eating more than 10g of nuts a day was positively associated with better mental functioning including improved thinking, reasoning and memory. Lead researcher from the University of SA, Dr Ming Li, said the study was the first to report an association between cognition and nut intake in older Chinese adults, providing important insights into increasing mental health issues, including dementia, faced by an ageing population. “Population ageing is one of the most substantial challenges of the 21st century. Not only are people living longer but as they age they require additional health support which is placing unprecedented pressure on aged care and health services,” Dr Li said. “Improved and preventive health care – including dietary modifications – can help address the challenges that an ageing population presents. “By eating more than 10g or two teaspoons of nuts per day older people could improve their cognitive function by up to 60 per cent compared to those not eating nuts. “Nuts are known to be high in healthy fats, protein and fibre with nutritional properties that can lower cholesterol and improve cognitive health,” Dr Li said. “While there is no cure for age-related cognition decline and neurogenerative disease, variations in what people eat are delivering improvements for older people.”
24 from 2-4.30pm, featuring healthy eating that is heart disease and diabetes friendly, weight neutral and cholesterol free. Dr Percy Harrold will speak on diabetes and nature’s plantbased foods, with a question and answer time. Bookings are essential and attendance will cost $6.50 for catering. To book contact Joanne on 5494 7228 or Lyndsay 0407 114 156. The demonstration will be held at the Adventist Community Centre, 27 Maleny Street, Landsborough.

Travelling North with the players
David Williamson’s ‘Travelling North’ will start the Maleny Players 2019 season. It is a play of love, conflict, humour and reason where an ageing Frank, a belligerent communist in his youth, and his somewhat younger new-found love Frances decide to leave family, friends and the inclement weather in Melbourne for a more relaxed and warmer climate in North Queensland. They set off north Frances (played by Barbara travelling in a Kombi van to find their Thomas) and Frank (played by tropical Nirvana. Barry Harber) with the Kombi Where: The Playhouse; Maleny van provided by Kate Woolston at Showgrounds LoveDubs Kombi Hire Maleny When: Friday and Saturday, April 5-6 and April 12-13, at 7pm, and Sunday, April 7 and April 14, at 2pm. Cost: $25 for adults and $15 for students (under 18 years) Tickets can be purchased online at www.malenyplayers.org/bookings or at Imelda’s on Maple Street Maleny. For more information please contact Rob Hobson on 0418 785 967.
Mystery in the Air at Maleny
Maleny Arts Council will open its 2019 series with two vintage radio plays by one of Australia’s best-known comedians Michael Veitch in the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday, April 7 at 2pm. After the plays, they will once again invite the audience to meet the artists on the Deck with nibbles. ‘Mystery in the Air’ was cowritten by Michael Veitch and his partner on the microphone, Simon Oats, playing the ‘perfect’ matinee idol rogue, but the real drama unfolds from the off-air mayhem. Sharply written, this is intelligent comedy that crosses politically correct boundaries with panache – it is, after all, set in a 1940s radio station where the two actors are performing this week’s exciting offerings of ‘Flash Gordon’ and ‘Horror in the Wax Works’. The much-loved but fading star, Veitch, is feeling the heat from the dashing newcomer, a returned ‘ace’ squadron leader from the recent war, but who is not quite as ‘professional’ as he should be. Between them they need to find 20 voices and a pile of live-to-air sound effects, and the show must go on despite the fireworks both on and off air. The golden age of radio is back! So if you can remember Flash Gordon or have never heard of him; if you listened avidly to live radio drama or can’t imagine how anyone could be “glued to the wireless”, you will enjoy the laughs and learn a little about the action behind the microphone. Bookings can be made through the Maleny Arts Council website www.malenyartscouncil.com or at the Visitors Centre in Maple Street.
Bulls and Broncs Rodeo coming to Aussie world
Mark your diaries for Saturday, April 6 when Aussie World hosts the Bulls and Broncs Rodeo. Bringing you some of Australia’s best competitors from across the country, as well as junior future stars such as 10-year-old Mooloolah lad Jacob Day, the event promises to have something for everyone to be entertained. Bring your chairs and settle in for a fun night for the whole family. Hosted by Aussie World and promoted by local Shona Hume through her new venture Boots n All Events, the evening will feature live music in the Shed until late, mechanical bull and licenced bar with food and drink available for purchase. Gates for the rodeo open 5pm and early bird ticket prices start from just $10 online. To make the most of the evening, Aussie World is offering a two-hour ride pass from 3-5pm for just $12. More details at www.aussieworld.com.au.
Picnic in the dark
Why not celebrate Earth Hour on Saturday, March 30 by joining the Sunshine Coast Dark Sky Astronomers at Maleny Golf Club from 5.30pm for a picnic in the dark (weather permitting). The group will have telescopes and astronomers on site for your enjoyment. This is a free event but you need to bring everything for your picnic. As it will be a dark sky night the organisers have asked attendees to park with headlights facing back to the street or, better still, park on the street and walk in. Regardless of whether you head along to the picnic or stay at home, don’t forget to turn your lights off between 8.30–9.30pm for Earth Hour. To find out more go to out www.earthhour.org. au. The Maleny Golf Club is located at 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny.

Long-term, happy and satisfied tenants will often become invested in the state of your home as they will not have a short-term view of the property. It is a lot cheaper to retain a good tenant than to find a new one. Having a proactive approach and treating your tenants with respect will lead to less tenancy turnovers and more cash flow.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in April
• Plant sweet peas, snow peas, sugar snap peas, climbing peas and bush peas. Plant as either seed or seedlings into soil that has had some dolomite added. Maybe try asparagus peas.
• Start to reduce the frequency of lawn mowing and start raising the blade height to allow the grass to keep a reasonable amount of leaf during the cooler months. • Fertilise your roses, especially if you haven’t done it for a few years. • It’s time to dig up, divide and replant your hippeastrum and lilium bulbs. • Bougainvillea cuttings can be taken now and struck in a good propagation mix. • Clean up the last of the summer vegetable crops. Use all the prunings, weeds and the remains of summer vegetables that have finished to start a compost heap. • Plant new pawpaw trees. Apply some boron to existing plants at a rate of 20g per tree and spray with a copper spray if black spot is seen. • Carefully cut off side shoots of bromeliads to create new plants. Plant these in the garden or in pots using a well-drained potting mix. Vegetables Plant beetroot, broccoli, radish, cabbage, leafy lettuce, carrot, celery, cauliflower, Asian greens, garlic, leeks, spring onion, potatoes, sweet potato, turnip, kohlrabi, capsicum, chilli, silverbeet, beans, peas and tomato. Flowers Plant alyssum, petunia, marigold, carnation, sweet pea, gaillardia, everlasting daisy, Livingstone daisy, sunflower, verbena, pansy, viola, primula, snapdragon, nemesia, Iceland poppy, dianthus, cleome and salvia.

Contributed by Gwen Malcolm The weather has been perfect for growing, so the time is right for another of Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network’s popular local plant sales. The Glasshouse Plantation on the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout Road will again be the venue for the plant sale on April 13 from 8-11am. Plant of the month
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network
Dwarf plum pine
Podocarpus spinulosus This unusual plant has no generally accepted common name but it is similar to the better known species, the plum pine, which is a slow growing tree. It has occasionally been referred to as the dwarf plum pine. Podocarpus species belong to a genus of conifers or cone-bearing plants. Conifers in turn belong to a group of non-flowering plants called gymnosperms. Like all conifers, Podocarpus spinulosus does not have flowers but bears male and female cones on separate plants. Female Podocarpus produce an edible fruit with a naked seed attached externally, as opposed to flowering plants where the seed is produced in an ovary. Podocarpus spinulosus is a shrublike plant to about 2m, often sprawling and growing in thickets. The leaves are sharply pointed and glossy green. It is found along coastal NSW and Queensland in a variety of soil conditions.

Sport Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Brenda Briese After the recent rain the golf course is in magnificent condition thanks to the great greens staff at Beerwah Golf Club. The dams are full again but still the heat goes on. Saturday, March 16 was the monthly mixed fourball best-ball. It was an aggregate stableford with a small field of 11 pairs. Winners were Lesley Eggleston and Peter Hewlett on 75 points, from Vanessa Aland and Scott Yeates on 72 points. NTPs: 5 - Bernard Stone and Andrea Campbell, 9 - Marie Goyder and Russell Tillyard, 16 - Col Penny and Hope Hannah and 18 - Karen Gannon and Andrew Betts. BRDs to 66 points. Thursday, March 21 was the ladies open day with players from several other clubs competing with a very full field of 142 players in three divisions playing a stroke event. Gross scores for division one were Jo Malone with a great score of 72 from Helen Milledge (Bribie Island) 78. Division two winner was Keryn Jessen (Gympie) on 93 followed by Joanne McCowan (Bribie Island) on 94. Division three winner was Odette Day (Headland) 100 from Fay Raven 111. Nett results in division one were winner Sonia Kenway 73 on count back from Barbara Newcom also on 73. The division two winner was Debs Rutherford on 71 from Sandra Prien (Caloundra) on 74. Division three winner was Ruth Parish on 79 from Barbara De Graff (Bribie Island) 80. NTPS: 2 - Jennie Hoffmann, 5 - Susan Wake, 16 Yolande Euler and 18 - Jo Malone. Accuracy drive in division one was Val Turner, division two Mary Barbeler and division three Susan Talford. Teams event winners were Andrea Campbell, Jo Malone, Desley Neilson and Linda Urquhart. BRD went to 78 nett. The weather forecast is for a cooler change late in the week - fingers crossed.
Ruth Parish, Sandra Prien, Debs Rutherford, Barbara Newcomb, Joanne McCowan and Barbara De Graff Helen Milledge, Jo Malone, and Fay Raven
Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Miles Allen It was a busy week for Maleny Bowls Club with plenty of action home and away. Sunday, March 17: A mixed team went to Mapleton to play in a fours competition and narrowly missed getting the highest margin in their third game. Many thanks to Ray Burge, Mark Paine and everyone at Mapleton Bowls Club for an excellent, friendly day. Tuesday, March 19: A competitive and social group of 10 players competed for honours. The team of won Sandra Kapetanic, Don Ginns and Joe Walters both their games so went home richer. Commiserations to Dave Burgess and John Kapetanic who won both their games but didn’t get a big enough margin. Wednesday, March 20: Two teams went to Woodford for the monthly triples competition. One team were overall runners up and the other team won the first round. If that wasn’t enough for them in one day, the players turned up for twilight bowls in the evening, where 42 players went into round five. We are half way through the competition and it’s getting closer at the top. As predicted, the Tutors pulled a big win out of the bag. We are patiently waiting for the Amigos to lift their game and for Paul Kemp to regain his Touchers form, while watching the Misfits recent surge with caution. We also welcomed four new visitors from Toowoomba and Maleny. Friday, March 22 was a beautiful afternoon for bowls and we made the most of it at our Scroungers competition with 22 players and more visitors from Logan and Toowoomba along for the fun. Among the victors who frequently seem to win on Fridays were Richard Bond, Don Ginns, Dave Edwards and Wendy Bulger. They were amply rewarded with vouchers and chocolates. So it was a big week. Our statistician estimates that there were 5284 bowls deliveries by members at Maleny Bowls Club last week and 828 away - it’s a huge number for a small club. That entails a lot of precision, bending and stretching, keenness on accuracy and, in some cases, elation on a well-delivered winning shot. None of those bowls could have been delivered without our green keeper Roy Gesch who maintains the surface, the board members who set our direction and oversee what goes on, and our volunteers who put in many hours each week doing many jobs and duties to keep us bowling, bowling and bowling.

Friday, March 22: One round, two game of the ladies club championship A singles were played with Marilyn Podmore defeating Chloe Runge 25-22 after being 21-15 down. A great game of bowls to watch with some outstanding bowls played. Thanks to Viv James for marking. Sunday, March 24: In round two of the ladies club championship in the A singles Di Garland was too good and defeated Marilyn Boulton 2514. Thanks to John Annakin for marking. Men’s B grade certified singles nominations are open and close this Thursday, March 28. On the same day nominations will open for the A singles. This Saturday and Sunday, March 30-31 we will be hosting a section of the qualifying finals in the morning and afternoon on both days for the Q7s. The format will be two games in the morning and two after lunch. The committee hope many members and spectators will come down to watch and support these games. The clubs participating could be from anywhere in the state. Our division four side of Dean Shaw, Mac Townson, Rob Scullion, Len Skerry, Graham Nicholson, Tony Verdonk, Barry Kirk and earlier Steve Joliffe along with team managers Liz and Terry Little have made the finals. It is yet to be determined where they will play.

Stanley gains victory Contributed by Sally Joyce The weather held out beautifully, although it was steamy, for this year’s Peachester State School’s Run for Fun. Students from years 4-6 were able to qualify for districts cross country by running the qualifying distance and all students earnt extra points for their house for every lap they ran. All of the prep students did one courageous lap of our school grounds and a few parents participated in the Run for Fun. Congratulations to Keeley, Ruby, Daniel, Armani, Emma, Addison and Jaxon who qualified for districts.
Public Notice The most exciting part of the day was seeing the blue faces of Stanley team light up when they learned that Stanley had won its first sports victory in many years. Well done Stanley! Stanley house captains Jaxon and Sam holding up the victory trophy
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Despite the heat and Witta Wagtail's loss to the Kawana Kool Kats, the competition and tennis between the two teams was enjoyable. Two of the Wagtails’ players were out due to injury, but we would like to thank Michelle Macree for helping us out on the day. Thanks also to Gerry Gabrielle, Jan Maguire and Sonia The Wildcats were at home to Eumundi Echo. It was extremely hot and humid and everyone struggled but it was great tennis with lots of hard fought points. Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Sonia Douglas just couldn’t
break through. We’ll get them next time. Whistlers played at Mooloolaba against the Legends. It was a very warm day and started with close sets sp we were soon exhausted. All the sets were close with lots of deuces. We had all had enough tennis for the day when we finished but we had a win though which was a great bonus! The score was 42-37 games, four sets all. The team was Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper and thanks to Ros Evans for filling in. Social tennis is on Monday at 8am and Saturday at 1pm. All welcome. For court bookings call 0437 295 501 or go to www.wittatennis.com.au.
The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker There was a bit more excitement than usual last Thursday when Rick Vickers came down to present the shade cloth made possible by a grant from the Rotary Club of Maleny. Rotary has been a great friend of our club over the years and this latest grant is greatly appreciated. Frances Harper and Gillian Bradley then teamed up to beat Kath Smith 6 -2 in a game of association. Donna Manning defeated Ken Barker 6-3. On lawn two, two games of six ball golf were played among Brenda and Gary Winter and Bev Sockhill. The results vectors were 3, 2, 7 for the first game and 3, 2, 4 for the second. Good wins for Bev in both games. On Sunday, March 17, Val and Vince Carbery played in the annual St Patrick's Day golf croquet event at Nambour. Unfortunately heavy rain intervened as they came off for lunch after three games, with three to go. Play was abandoned much to the disappointment of the participants. Meanwhile Sarah Widin, Nick Cram, Donna and Ken arrived at the lawn at 2.30pm. There
A thorn between two roses, Rick Vickers from Rotary Maleny, with Bev Sockhill and Kath Smith under the new shade cloth was a bit of rain about so discussion centred around whether the hoops should be put in. Eventually this was done, but a shower moved in and eventually the hoops were pulled. No play occurred. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showground from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are at 2.10pm for 2.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. For details contact president Vince Carbery 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs Is honesty is the best policy?
Little Johnny lived in the country and had to use an outhouse. Little Johnny hated it because it was hot in the summer and cold in the winter and always smelt awful. The outhouse was sitting on the bank of a creek and Johnny determined that one day he would push that outhouse into the creek. After a storm with heavy rain, the creek was swollen so Little Johnny decided today was the day to push the outhouse into the creek. He got a large stick and started pushing. Finally, the outhouse toppled into the creek and floated away.

This week sees many exciting chances for you to have happy outcomes. From Thursday Mercury turns direct and therefore support begins to flow through accord, approval and caring communications. Late night plans now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The next four weeks should be very promising for the social aspects of your life whether concerning love, friendship or career networking. This is because a very positive aspect involving the Sun energises in your solar eighth sector, bringing added income. Maybe there is a refund on an insurance policy. Novel imported items. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 At last your ruling planet Mercury goes direct this week and therefore begins the clearing up of errors and misunderstandings for the past three weeks. Over the weekend responsibilities may come before pleasure. The end of the month sees the planet Mars entering Gemini, rousing you physically and mentally. Pursue goals, display skills. CANCER June 24 - July 22 Be ready for an amazing adventure that may involve friends, travel or breaking new ground in some way. Now that the planet Mercury moves direct it gives the green light to accurate communication. Therefore start slow. That night his dad told him they were going to the woodshed after supper. Knowing that meant a spanking, Little Johnny asked why. The dad replied: "Someone pushed the outhouse into the creek today. It was you, wasn't it son?" Little Johnny answered yes. Then he thought a moment and said: "Dad, I read in school today that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn't get into trouble because he told the truth." His dad replied: "Well, son, George Washington's father wasn't in the cherry tree."
LEO July 23 – August 22 The planet Mercury makes a forward move again but still in the sign of Pisces. This means conversations should be debated with understanding to show the way forward to future reconstruction in work or finances. There is an early relationship responsibility that hinders fun or keeps you down. However, by early next week adoring fans again! VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Following recent excitement, bought to you by people you know, you can really move forward now in areas where you depend on others. Mercury rules your sign and now in its direct forward motion again fortunate influences make the whole of next week with good prospects. You should find a good weekend project. Congenial teamwork. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Be prepared for a different week! As Mercury goes forward you may see a spontaneous purchase or incoming funds. As Mercury moves forward in Pisces it brings you clarity to lagging work or wellness matters. There still could be a feeling of loneliness or isolation.
