ast Wednesday night we caught up with extended family members, and with them having served in the Army and Navy, our conversation not surprisingly turned to this week’s ANZAC Day services. We were chatting about just how many services are held in Glass House, Beerwah, Landsborough and Maleny and how many we manage to attend each year, how different each of them are, with unique elements that make them stand apart. For many years, Brownie has attended the Landsborough Dawn Service and I have attended the Beerwah Dawn Service. During our conversation Brownie had mentioned that for him one of the things he enjoyed most when we came to the area was the contribution from Pastor Les Peel from Church on the Rise at the Landsborough Dawn Service. Pastor Les never seemed to have any words written down that he was following, but he spoke with such genuine emotion, passion and from the heart, about the sacrifices that the diggers made during times of war, that inadvertently you were caught up in his words. He engaged you with his thoughts as you remembered why it was important that we continue to live the message ‘Lest we forget’ of what our military personnel did to ensure our freedom today. So for us to hear of the passing of Pastor Les last Friday morning – someone who we worked closely with in the many aspects of his work as both a pastor and as a community leader, we were really sad. However as we went along to our Dawn Services this year we couldn’t help but think how fortunate that we and the whole community are and how we have benefited much from the work that both Pastor Les and his lovely wife Pastor Dawn Peel brought to so many people in Glasshouse Country. After successfully lobbying for additional police officers in Maleny three years ago, Andrew Powell MP, Member for Glass House immediately turned his attention to delivering a new Police Station. Mr Powell is now delighted to announce that construction has commenced on a brand new Police Station and QGAP Office in Macadamia Drive that will more comfortably accommodate the officers and administration staff both now and into the future. “It’s an exciting day for Maleny! I’ve been quietly working away behind the scenes with successive governments to see our plans for a new station become a reality.

“Our community is growing and therefore our services and infrastructure need to grow too, and this new station will become a community safety and service hub the whole Blackall Range can be proud of. Completion of the new station is expected, weather permitting, in December. “But if you can’t wait to see what it’s going to look like, please feel free to drop in to my office, the current police station or the Maleny Library to view the plans,” Mr Powell concluded. Targa Tasmania is the largest tarmac rally in the world, taking place in Tasmania over six days in April each year. This year, was the 25th anniversary of this event and 382 cars participated in various categories. The Rally commenced in Launceston on April 11 and finished at Salamanca Place in Hobart on April 16. The Rally consists of 38 racing stages over 514 kilometres, taking in the sights of Tasmania from the north, the west (Strahan) and the south-west (Huon Valley). Cameron and Matt had a close tussle with John and Jason White, until the White’s car blew an engine in the latter stages. The boys won by finishing just under seven minutes ahead of their closest rivals.

20 years of working with wood, from chainsaw to fine furniture With the 20th Maleny Wood Expo about to take place over the May Day long weekend – April 30 to May 2, a few members of the founding committee met recently to reminisce on one of Queensland’s longest-running community-based events. The Maleny Wood Expo is now recognised as one of the best wood and fine furniture shows in Australia, bringing economic benefit to not just the region’s woodworkers but the wider community. It all began back in 1995, with a meeting of Barung to discuss initiatives to try to keep Barung financial. Attendees included Ashley Sewell, a forestry department staffer with a strong interest in Barung’s future: he’d been involved in setting up the organisation in 1989. Also present were Craig Hosmer and Daryl Reinke, who had recently moved to the Blackall Range and were (then) new members of the Barung Management Committee. According to Craig, Ashley made a suggestion to the Committee. “I think Ashley said, ‘I’ve always wanted to do a Chainsaw to Fine Furniture event’, and we looked at each other and thought that was a fine idea!” Craig laughs. Ashley explained that the original concept was to promote sustainability. “We wanted to show that we can grow the seedlings, we can get them planted in the ground, we can do all the pruning techniques required to get them to a good loggable size, then we can go through and selectively harvest, do the milling and drying etc, and then make some furniture,” he said. Hence was born The Chainsaw to Fine Furniture concept. The first Maleny Wood Expo was held at the Maleny Showgrounds in April 1996. The emphasis was on local artists – the woodworkers who were hidden in the local area. As the word got out that Barung Landcare was organised and knew what they were doing, exhibitors started signing on. The Expo’s diversity, right from the first event, appealed to a wide range of people interested in every branch and expression of woodwork. “I remember that first year, I was standing on the stage with my arm around Daryl and we were absolutely stunned at the hall being absolutely packed,” Ashley reminisces fondly.

The committee in 1996 - Craig Hosmer, Greg Jendra, Denise Irons, John Muir, Lisa Woods, Sammy Ringer, Maree Degraw, Lisa Woods’ son, Randy Degraw, Marc Russell, Daryl Reinke and Ashley Sewell Like all long-term events, changes have been made along the way to ensure the event remains viable. According to Linda Nathan, editor of Australian Wood Review magazine, the Maleny Wood Expo is the only wood show in Australia to have taken the concept and evolved it by involving local artists, craftspeople and producers to create a vibrant event that encompasses community and family values. “Undoubtedly it is the fact that the organisers of the Maleny Wood Expo adhere firmly to their founding principles of promoting only sustainably sourced native timbers that is responsible for its continued and expanding success,” she observes. “A clear vision sends out a clear message and you’ve only got to be there amongst the crowds to know the public loves this event.” Over the years, the number of exhibitors has swelled, with around 130 this year, and organisers are hoping to welcome more than 10,000 visitors through the gates over the three days. In a world of planned obsolescence and plastic furniture, the Maleny Wood Expo offers both an antidote to fast returns and an optimistic look to the future. Here’s to another 20 years! The Maleny Wood Expo is proudly supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland, as well as the Sunshine Coast Council and Visit Sunshine Coast. Help knitting donations get to the needy By Sonia Clark Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy (K4BN) is a grass roots organisation that contributes new handmade items to those in need. Founded by Glass House Mountains residents Karen and Peter Croke in January 2006, the idea started with wanting to support the homeless in Brisbane with knitted beanies, scarves and gloves. A decade on, that support extends to those in need, throughout Queensland. Karen and a handful of friends began by knitting 200 beanies a year, then as word about the organisation got around – more and more people became involved. Now around 500 people knit and create items for the needy on the Gold Coast up to communities towards Mount Isa. From the initial idea of wanting to help with just a handful of friends, now there are 22 ‘knit and natter’ groups that meet regularly scattered from the Gold Coast up to Forest Glen here on the Sunshine Coast. Last year an incredible 42,500 items were created with goal of creating 50,000 items this year on the cards. Over the years the organisation has made over 308,000 items to help the needy and been recognised with numerous community and volunteer awards. Incredibly, given the huge groundswell of support, the organisation is not run as a registered charity. The bulk of the pickups and deliveries are mainly done by Peter and Karen in their trusty old Nissan Navara - with a storage shed for donated items out the back of their home. Peter regularly drives from the Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast picking up donations as well as

Karen and Peter Croke in front of their truck which has done over 360,000km driving out to Community Centres throughout the state - everywhere from Ipswich to Maryborough, Roma, Warwick and Toowoomba. Their truck, which currently has done around 360,000 kilometres, is slowly running out of steam. So friends and supporters of the couple, are asking for public help to assist them to purchase a reliable vehicle, so that they can continue their volunteer charity work. This type of organisation only exists through the generosity of others, and Karen and Peter are extremely grateful for all the fantastic support people have shown for this cause. Another local small business supported by Saver6.com.

Police Beat with Constable Susan Lowndes Stealing from vehicles

Unfortunately, there has been a recent increase in the number of vehicles being broken into and property then being taken from them. While leaving your vehicle unlocked can make you an easy target, leaving valuable items in your vehicle can be enough incentive for an offender to force entry. Whether your car is parked in your front yard, at the shops or train station or anywhere else, don’t leave valuable items behind and if there is no alternative make sure they are well hidden.

Business feature Meet Stephen Perry, a Landsborough local and proprietor of Outdoor Zen. Stephen has been enjoying the ongoing benefits of owning his own business for the last 12 months, through the business model developed by the Saver6.com and Transportable Shade Sheds Collaboration. Stephen has made decorative concrete rock features that sit at the base of some Transportable Shade Sheds products for over 10 years. As Stephen was a supplier to Transportable Shade Sheds it was through doing a delivery to them that he first saw the mobile trailers offered. He quickly realised that there was an opportunity to be had and he had better move fast so he didn’t miss out. “The trailers looked really good and I knew it was a great local product from an established local company. I thought that it was a business model that I could do well with, and wanting to be my own boss, I bought one, and it’s been working successfully ever since.” said Stephen. “I really liked the idea of securing my work prospects as well as a chance to have local employment. I also like the fact that I could help service the local area with their needs for Shade products that I can sell and install directly for the customer.” One of the main advantages that Stephen has come across is that in purchasing the trailer package, he owns it and he isn’t limited as a restrictive franchise would be. It is also backed up by free, yet comprehensive training and ongoing support through the cloud based Saver6.com platform. Stephen has found the whole process extremely easy and stress free, and found Tyler Maclaren (pictured) and the team at Transportable Shade Sheds to be very friendly and accessible. As part of the business model, Stephen received full product and installation training as well as comprehensive sales and marketing techniques. Through the additional support of Saver6.com, which is included in the package, Stephen has ready access to online marketing and mentoring support to assist in promoting his business. Saver6.com creates and runs Stephen’s web page, conducts direct marketing to his local audience and supports social media profiles with a heavy online business presence. “It’s been great! I’ve been very busy and have had lots of support whenever I’ve needed it. I highly recommend having this as your own business and I’ve been very happy that I decided to take up the opportunity. Tyler and the team at Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com have been excellent in their encouragement and support,” said Stephen. So if you’re looking for a fantastic opportunity to change your life, why don’t you contact Transportable Shade Sheds or Saver6.com on 1300 667 433. Opportunities are available around Australia, so even if this isn’t for you, why don’t you tell someone else you know about this because it may change their life, like it has for Stephen Perry.

Hi! I’m Stephen Perry, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. I am available to help you with your Transportable Shade Shed purchase, from your intial enquiry, right through to installing it on your property. Give me a call today!

Although there were thankfully very few serious incidents on our roads over the Easter period, there were still a number of traffic crashes recently in our division where driver error and inattention has been responsible both drivers and others have been severely injured. Simple things such as, ensuring you indicate an appropriate distance before turning or changing lanes, keeping left on multi-lane roads unless overtaking and giving way to other vehicles can make a huge difference. Obviously the issue of inattention includes the use of mobile phones while driving. While it is lawful to use the phone with the appropriate handsfree device, motorists need to remember to continue to concentrate on their driving while talking. Things such as changing music selection and checking maps are best done when pulled over or by a passenger. While it can be frustrating to be stuck in traffic or behind a vehicle travelling a bit under the speed limit Snr Sgt Cavell of Beerwah Police reminds us of our road responsibilities. "The aim is to reach your destination safely. Police conduct traffic enforcement duties and operations to address drivers that don't drive to the road rules and put others’ lives at risk. We want to provide a safe community for all of us, especially our children." A little bit of patience and courtesy can make our roads a safer place for everyone.

Show Volunteer - Tae Young Like many community events, the Maleny Show relies on the outstanding support of its amazing volunteers. Young Sunshine Coast University student Tae Young is a great example of a volunteer who gives a great deal of time in the lead up to the show. Tae produces and captures movies and AV footage to help bring the visual message of the farm and farmers to visitors at the Small Farmers Tent. While Tae doesn’t come from a broad agricultural background, he is a talented young filmmaker who since starting last year, has donated his time and film making skills. The Small Farmers Tent has become a real drawcard for Show visitors and the experience has been greatly enhanced by Tae’s films. Alongside Jess Wild, the brainchild of Small Farmers, the pair interview and film local hinterland farmers and producers. As well as researching and producing the movies, Tae films the footage along with help from his family and the crew at Sound Image (who donate their equipment for Tae’s use). The result is a series of Farmers Films which are shown in the dedicated Small Farmers’ enclosure. This year, the Small Farmers Tent features guest farmers, films and talks from an agronomist, pineapple, strawberry and macadamia farmers, native plant, food and citrus experts. Building on this year’s theme of Sustainability is a film about Baranbali Farm (sustainable farming), beekeepers, goat farmers and poultry farmers. Plus, earthworm farmer talks, permaculture demonstrations, and whip-making classes. Farewell to Pastor Les Peel By Lea Parkes

On Friday morning GC&M News was advised that Pastor Les Peel, formerly of Beerwah’s Church on the Rise, had passed away unexpectedly. For those of you who are newer residents of Glasshouse Country you may not recognise the name, however for many others in the community including members of his congregation and the numerous community organisations that he supported, he will be fondly remembered. Pastor Les and his wife Pastor Dawn moved to Beerwah and took on their roles in the church in 1992 and worked here until 2007. While being incredibly committed to his Church activities he also worked across the whole community, including participating in RSL services, and hosting a special thank you service each year to acknowledge the great work and sacrifice our emergency services, particularly our volunteers, made to our community.

Love was in the air

The Hinterland provided a romantic backdrop last week when shows in the second ‘The Bachelor’ New Zealand television season began airing episodes filmed exclusively in Queensland. Visit Sunshine CoastCEO, Simon Ambrose, said the show provided the perfect platform to showcase a range of romantic experiences and locations across the Sunshine Coast to inspire more New Zealand travellers to the region.

He was also very supportive of the Beerwah Chamber of Commerce, Christmas events and was also the organiser of Nutfest. While Beerwah has not been Les and Dawn's home for a number of years now, Pastor Les’s family will be holding a memorial service here this Friday April 29 at 11.00am and would like to extend an invitation to those in the community who would like to attend. The memorial service will be held at Church on the Rise, 68 Peachester Road Beerwah.

The episodes feature a group date with Bachelor Jordan Mauger and all the bachelorettes at Australia Zoo and also a single date with the bachelor and one lucky contestant starting in Caloundra’s Golden Beach and Kings Beach before heading inland to the hinterland. The bachelor and bachelorettes enjoyed a garden party and rose ceremony amongst the picturesque grounds of Maleny Botanical Gardens and Birdworld. So hopefully this will inspire lots of Kiwi couples to head across the ditch, for some romance on the Range.

FEBRUARY 279 2016 24 2016 APRIL MARCH 20 2016

Thanks to Jeff Cornfoot from Rotary, Tess Preswell from Lions and Nooreen Harris from the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre for presenting at our last Networking Breakfast. The discussion was based on some of the great work undertaken by their individual community groups in Maleny. A key message for me was that Maleny is a great place to be involved in socialising and building your community and there are almost an unlimited number of groups, activities and levels of involvement for all people. To businesses, I would suggest that investing in these community groups helps build our town on a grassroots level and supports the community that supports you. It’s a statistical fact that Maleny is one of the most generous towns in Australia, both financially and I reckon more importantly, in our community spirit. Keep up the good work, give, work or support your community. Maleny Commerce Networking Breakfasts give an opportunity for a wide range of people in our community to come together on a regular basis. They’re fertile ground for exchange of ideas, opportunities and the latest news. One of the great strengths of our business community is its diversity and I’m proud of the role Maleny Commerce plays in this. On another note, I’d just like to briefly pay tribute to our local dairy industry businesses. From the ashes of QLD dairy deregulation in the 90’s has arisen a thriving local dairy industry that includes Maleny Dairies, Maleny Cheese and Colin James Fine Foods. These local businesses employ or provide business opportunities for hundreds of local people and in turn their families. The quality of their produce is nationally recognised. Buy Local, Work Local. Our next Maleny Commerce Networking Breakfast is at the House of Laurels on Tuesday, May 10, and our guest speaker is Rod Richards from Richards Consulting. His topic is ‘Don’t Sell Yourself Short’ – be the best you can be in your business.

Donate toiletries for Burrumbuttock Hay Runners Amcal Pharmacy, Beerwah are collecting toiletries to help the farmers and their families who are facing real hardship in the face of severe drought. Toiletries can be an expensive item to add to the shopping list and you can help by providing essential items such as shampoo, deodorant, sanitary items and much more. Burrumbuttock Hay Runners have completed 11 successful hay runs since 2014 and the Sunshine Coast community is hoping to continue helping the farmers and their families in the drought affected areas, not just providing hay for their stock, but also directly assisting the families. Council’s ‘buy local’ guidelines benefit local business Support for a competitive local business and industry network underpins Sunshine Coast Council’s introduction of detailed ‘buy local’ guidelines. A Local Preference in Procurement Guideline was introduced at a recent ordinary meeting of council during an annual review of its Procurement Policy. Council reviews its Procurement Policy annually to ensure sound contracting principles—such as value for money, open and effective competition, the development of competitive local business and industry, environmental protection as well as ethical behaviour and fair dealing— are addressed. Corporate Strategy and Finance portfolio holder Cr Tim Dwyer said local suppliers had received more than $133 million in council spending so far this financial year, representing 68% of the total spend. “Council is always looking for opportunities to foster greater engagement with local suppliers,” Cr Dwyer said. “The Local Preference in Procurement Guideline outlines strategies that will help ensure local business and industry are the primary suppliers of goods and services to council.” Key strategies include: • Contracts under $15,000 - local suppliers only invited to quote; • Contracts between $15,000 and $100,00 - at least two of the three required quotes invited from local suppliers; • Contracts between $100,000 and $200,000 – at least one of the three required quotes invited from local suppliers;

• 15% evaluation weighting for ‘contribution made to the local economy’ criteria in all tenders and in any quoting process where local compete with non-local suppliers. “These guidelines are supported by other initiatives aimed at providing local business and industry with the tools they need to compete for council contracts, tenders and procurement activities such as expressions of interests, tenders, request for quotes and disposal activities,” Cr Dwyer said. “Council’s long running strategy of developing smaller and more manageable contracts that match with existing markets will continue. “Supplier briefings will be held to inform suppliers of upcoming major projects and will be complemented by the introduction of an annual Key Suppliers Forum that provides an opportunity to engage with local suppliers who have delivered goods and services to council in the preceding year. “Local suppliers looking to understand council’s procurement processes are encouraged to attend a Doing Business with Council workshop where they can learn about competitive responses to a tender and requests for quotes. “Ultimately, council’s procurement policy provides a framework for council’s contracting activities within effective governance and probity frameworks. “The local preference guideline underscores council’s commitment to use local suppliers where possible to support the development of a competitive local business and industry network across the Sunshine Coast.”

A long and lasting marriage celebrating 60 years

There must be something special in the air around the Hinterland area as another local couple celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Italo and Noela Frizzo celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary last Saturday, April 16, with a sit down lunch along with their three children, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a few close friends at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. This was followed by a surprise afternoon tea celebration at their home in Glass House Mountains on the Sunday with members of the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society Inc. to mark the occasion. Italo was born in 1933 in Lismore NSW while Noela was born at Palmwoods in 1937. From 1938, Italo lived on the family farm at Palmview and Noela lived nearby on a dairy farm at Mooloolah. As teenagers, Italo and Noela met at a local dance at Mooloolah; they immediately became sweethearts and remained that way forever. Noela worked on the switch-board at McDonnell and East boarding with an aunty at Stafford until the family moved to Bald Hills. Italo remained working on the farm at Palmview and visited Noela every weekend. The couple announced their engagement at Italo’s 21st birthday party and they were married around 18 months later at The Church of The Holy Rosary Windsor on April 14, 1956. The reception was held at the school hall at Bald Hills with the local CWA catering (Noela still has the menu and price which was 10 shillings and 6 pence which would be about $1.05 cents per head!) From the farm at Palmview they managed a family fruit and furniture shop in Caloundra in the Frizzo building. Italo was not cut out to be a shopkeeper so the family moved to North Queensland joining Italo’s brother in his cane hauling business. While at Gordonvale, Italo and Noela had three children, Carol born in 1958, Sandra born in 1959 and Adrian born in 1961. After nine cane seasons, Italo and Noela packed up the family and moved back to farm at Palmview arriving on Christmas Eve 1966. They farmed at Palmview and managed the Post Office and switch-board as well as some other outside jobs until they were able to purchase the two farms at Barrs Road, Glass House Mountains. They continued farming until the children took over the farms and they retired moving just a short distance away. Noela has always had an interest in growing orchids and became a member of the Glasshouse Country Orchid society in 1978. They are now both life members. When they retired the hobby grew, and now they have a collection of approximately15,000 orchids including some rare and wonderful species. Italo and Noela have all their married life worked side by side and credit this to their long and lasting marriage. They say that long and happy marriages don’t just happen - you have to work through the good and the bad times together.

Community Barbecue in Glass House

A new sense of belonging was felt by many at the first ever Community Barbecue held at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on Friday, April 15. Newcomers and long-term locals together enjoyed a healthy, delicious $4.00 meal, while chatting and listening to live music. The Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains generously brought along their barbecue trailer and did the cooking. President of the Neighbourhood Centre, Helen Wilkinson, said the event was hopefully the first of many to come. “It was exciting to see a new Glass House Mountains community atmosphere created at the barbecue,” she said. “We want to help bring about more community spirit, like many longtermers would remember in the good old days.” The barbecue was also extra accessible, thanks to Colleen Clark and Debbie Koost, with the recently installed disabled carpark at the Neighbourhood Centre. The Neighbourhood Centre look forward to hosting more Community Barbecues after the cool season in September. If you would like to help out or perform your music at the next barbecue please contact the Neighbourhood Centre on 5438 7000. ANZAC Day 2016 Students remember

Beerwah State School assembled under the age old mango trees for their 2016 Anzac ceremony. The service was introduced by vice captains Paige and Brock. Students and staff listened to Ms Austen commemorate the fallen heroes, and honour memories of past and current service men and women abroad. For the second year, the Year 6 Beerwah Student Council wore badges commemorating solders from our region. A poem tribute was read by Year 6 student leaders Jack and Tyler-Maree followed by the roll of honour for those fallen in the Peachester and Beerwah area.

Chaplin Linda took prayer and read a brief story of the significance of the poppy. New life and hope can come from a new morning no matter how sad. The senior choir under the direction of Mrs Prasser sang ‘The Last Anzac’ and led the National Anthem followed by the New Zealand National Anthem sung by Year 6 students Paige, Bailee and Mackenzie. Opportunity was given for staff and students to lay a wreath. Beerwah State School senior choir will form part of the community service on Anzac Day in Turner Park.

A Rose for Remembrance Contributed by Sally Joyce

Peachester State School recently received a gift of a special rose from 95 year old Nessie Pratten’s garden to be planted in the school’s Anzac Garden. The miniature double-red rose named ‘Valentine’ was purchased by Nessie and her late husband Alf around their 50th wedding anniversary and has over time been propagated into further pots by Nessie. Nessie and Alf were married on Valentine’s Day, February 14 1942. Nessie said “On opening the newspaper on the first day of our marriage we read that Singapore had fallen to the Japanese. All leave was cancelled. Alf, a Light Horseman and his bestman returned to the army barracks and on news of his wedding they were both dunked in the horse trough.” It is Nessie’s wish that this rose also be a mark of remembrance for the men in her husband‘s Battalion – the 2/33rd Australian Infantry Battalion. On September 7, 1943, in Port Moresby New Guinea, 60 men were killed and 92 injured when a Liberator bomber accidentally crashed among the trucks carrying the battalion. Nessie recalls that for many years Alf and his remaining Battalion were sworn to secrecy about this incident. All five of Nessie and Alf’s children attended Peachester State School. Nessie’s recollection is that her youngest child Billy was one of a collection of unborn children who were listed as future students. This was necessary to complete the required quota in order to keep the school open. When hearing of the Anzac Garden makeover, Nessie asked the school if they would like one of her special roses for the garden … a fitting new home for this sentimental rose that will honour those who served our country and the community we have today. Thank you Nessie and Lest We Forget.

A minutes silence

Landsborough Kindergarten commemorated Anzac Day around our memorial stone. As we listened to the Last Post we each laid a poppy to honour all the soldiers who went to war. We stood in silence for one minute to remember all the service men and women who sacrificed their lives to give us a happy and safe place to live. Ryley and Indi laid the wreath.

Peachester CWA report The Peachester CWA recently hosted a successful high tea fundraiser for cancer research. Because of the generosity of the wonderful people who donated so many fabulous prizes (see list of prizes and winners in public notices on page 48) and everyone who bought raffle tickets, the Peachester CWA was able to raise $1,600.00. “My heartfelt thanks must also go to the men-folk who helped set up, “ said CWA President, Coral Beutel. “Without you we would be sitting on the floor!"

Also the people who helped with cooking and the members and all their work. “Last but not least, a big thank you to Kev Wrayford for his help with announcements and delightful singing.” Although the guest speaker didn't arrive, with a delicious spread of tasty treats and happy jokes plus entertainment by Kev, the morning tea was a success. So far the number of debs and partners who have registered for the 2016 ball, to be held in September, is not enough to go ahead. We would hate to disappoint those who have already put their names down and our committee would be most disappointed if it did not go ahead with 22 years of holding the ball. We have therefore decided to hold another

Vale Reg Givney Contributed by Neil Glover Glasshouse Country Men's Shed lost well regarded member Reg Givney when he passed away on March 24. Reg’s, member number was 15, and he had been with us from the start. He was born in Esk Queensland, where his father was employed on the construction of the Somerset Dam, having previously worked with John Bradfield on the Story Bridge in Brisbane. Reg met Pamela, the love of his life, in 1950 when they were both 14. Their marriage in 1958 resulted in six children, 25 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, (five more babies are due this year). In 1956, Reg became an electrical linesman with the Southern Electrical Authority (Energex). He was involved in connecting power to O'Reillys Guest House on Lamington Plateau. Later (1970) the family moved to Bougainville where Reg had secured a 16 week contract to erect power lines, however it was 20 years, before they returned to Queensland. After settling in the Glass House Mountains, Reg and his family established a reputation as respected Christian members of the community. Reg's regular message to his grandchildren was "Gee, have I told you how beautiful you all are!" Rest in peace old mate.

Community Group Interesting Aloe Vera

Contributed by Pauline Clarke Our speaker this month at the Glasshouse Country View Club was Angie Andrews who gave us a very informative talk on Aloe Vera and its many uses in everyday life. Although Aloe is 99% water, the remaining 1% is extremely powerful and apart from being an excellent treatment for burns and other skin conditions, it also seems to be excellent at regulating the immune system. Altogether, Aloe Vera seems to be a very effective healing plant. Our president, Lynda Flanigan, (pictured) presented 10 year badges to Heather Burton and Sue Haslem. Well done ladies. We also had a further two ladies join our meeting this week, Carol and Susan. Our next outing on Thursday, May 5 will be to ‘Cartwrights’ TAFE restaurant. Please meet at Beerwah library at 11.00am for carpooling. VIEW clubs throughout Australia are an integral part of The Smith Family, a children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children.

Glasshouse Country Toastmasters

Contributed by Kerry Gillam Our Club had the pleasure of welcoming, Cynon Lowe, to become a new member at our last meeting. Cynon has been to a few meetings, enjoying them all, before she took the step to become a member. When asked to attempt Table Topics, although nervous, she rose to the occasion and ended up top of the class. Our Club is always looking for new members, and unfortunately, there seems to be a feeling that we are all about business. Guess what, we are not, and although certain steps have to be followed, we are all about fun. Come along to a few meetings and then you will see for yourself. For further information, ring either Martine 5496 9855 or Kerry 5494 0161. Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at the Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah. Time: 9.00am to 11.30am.

Chappy Bowls Day

Contributed by Mike Turner On Sunday, April 17 our second ever 'Chappy Bowls Day' was held at Club Glasshouse. The weather was fantastic and 12 teams came along to show their support of the Beerwah High Chaplaincy and have some fun while they were at it. In monetary terms, the event raised $1472.00 which is really great. Thanks to all the teams for coming along. Many of these teams came dressed in costume - special mention to the Hawaiian groovers and Pirates from 'Glasshouse Country Care'. They put in a lot of effort. I would like to give a shout out to Sharon and her wonderful staff at Club Glasshouse. They were great hosts for our event and helped us so much. In particular I would like to mention David who was registering all the players and giving tips to those of us whose bowling skills were - how do I put this? - less than average. Thanks Dave! Also we couldn't have done without the guys from Rotary who cooked and served the barbecue lunch to all the players. Thanks so much for being there and supporting us. Many local businesses got behind us too with items and vouchers to be used as prizes. These included: The Terrace Seafood Restaurant, Pasta d’Vine, Neddy’s Nosebag, Subway, Dominos, Mrs Browns, Beerwah Hotel, Beerwah Cafe, Hinterland Seafood, Meals 4 U, Beerwah Health Foods, Cafe Fudge Maleny, Glasshouse Mountains Tavern, Buck’s Bakery, Beerwah Active Physio, Matilda Fruit Barn, Landsborough Meats, Everything Good Fruit and Nursery and Beerwah Meats. Last but not least, I would like to thank Glenda McSwain and my everamazing chaplaincy committee who work tirelessly behind the scenes fundraising to keep chaplaincy fulltime at Beerwah High.

Beerwah Lions busy month

Contributed by Bob Banner At the recent well attended April Dinner Meeting of the Beerwah Lions Club, recycle Chairman Greg Howard, reported that more than 200kgs of used aluminium cans had been sent off for recycling during April. Although not a huge financial windfall for the club, members take satisfaction that the cans are being converted to recycled aluminium, rather than becoming landfill. President Pat was pleased to welcome two visiting Lions, Dianne and Ted Hughes from Lions Onoz. Lions Onoz is a special club set up for overseas Lions who are exploring Australia, its members communicate via email. During the evening, acting president of the Ladies Auxiliary, Lenore Howard, presented President Pat with a cheque for $1,600.00. The ladies have recommended that the money be spent on a surfboard for the under privileged kids association, The Make a Wish Foundation, and the Brighter Future for Kids organisation. www.gcnews.com.au

Environment International forestry expert coming to Expo Waste research to help inform discussions on Container Deposit Scheme

Andrew Ingles, from The Nature Conservancy, will be presenting at the 20th Maleny Wood Expo from April 30 to May 2. It is a major coup for the Maleny Wood Expo having Andrew Ingles from the internationally respected conservation organisation speaking at the event. The Nature Conservancy is a not-for-profit organisation that originated in the US in 1951 as a charitable land trust. It has grown and expanded to now work in 69 countries across North America and Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Africa, with a mission to conserve the lands and waters upon which all life depends. Andrew has visited Maleny before and is very impressed with the work of the Barung Landcare organisation, and of the Maleny Wood Expo. “Barung is to be congratulated for their initiative taken 20 years ago to bring sustainable use of timber to the public’s attention,” he said. According to Andrew, the current use of forest resources at global and regional scales is definitely not sustainable, but he has seen that sustainability can be successfully pursued and achieved for a specific land management unit. “With the right multi-stakeholder processes and organisations, sustainability can be secured at a landscape scale as well,” he advised. “The Maleny Wood Expo Sustainability Timber Policy is a great example of seeking the uptake of sensible criteria and principles to the way we use our valuable environmental assets.” “The sustainable harvesting and management of forests and the creation of long lasting wood products has been recognised by climate change scientists as providing significant carbon sequestration benefits that mitigate against climate change.” Andrew is coming to the Maleny Wood Expo because it celebrates forest values, the diversity of wood, its aesthetic properties, its transformation into works of art, and its functionality for people and their material culture. At his talk on Saturday, April 30, the audience will hear Andrew’s report on the state of forestry and trade in Tropical Asia, and what people are doing to try to improve the situation. He will share details about the extent of illegal logging, the widespread use of unsustainable forestry practices, and the many social and environmental problems experienced in timber producing countries. In addition, Andrew will share some good news about what some consumer countries, communities and companies are doing to combat these problems. The story from tropical Asia provides a good backdrop to view the policies and work of the Maleny Wood Expo. Andrew hopes that from the talk, the audience will be aware that: • Responsible forestry and trade across Tropical Asia has not been achieved and is a work in progress, facing significant challenges • Legality is an essential step in sustainable timber production • Australian importers of tropical timbers need to undertake due diligence actions under Australian Law • Frugal use of tropical timber is a good idea, and to select certified, sustainably sourced products • The Maleny Wood Expo Sustainable Timber Policy is to be applauded Come and speak with Andrew at the 2016 Maleny Wood Expo. The Queensland Government is conducting research to find out how much recyclable material is still finding its way into the State’s neighbourhood garbage collections. Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles said the research was being done at a number of council tips and would ultimately assist with investigations into the introduction of a state-based Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). “We will be working with councils to specially unload some of the garbage trucks before they get to their tips, in order to get a better understanding of what is in the trucks, and the composition of general waste,’’ Dr Miles said. “The process is anonymous; there is no identification of any individual person or household. It does not involve examination of household wheelie bins. “Researchers will use the data to calculate how much aluminium and glass for example, Queensland could be recycling but currently isn’t,’’ he said. Dr Miles said the information from these ‘audits’ would help inform discussions on the CDS for Queensland. “The Palaszczuk Government is also closely watching the CDS discussions in NSW where the Government has committed to introducing a CDS by 2017,’’ Dr Miles said. “If the Queensland Government does decide to introduce a container deposit scheme, it would be desirable that the two schemes are consistent in their key design elements,’’ he said. Dr Miles said an Advisory Group had been established in Queensland to assist in better understanding the issues and design of a scheme. “Container deposit schemes are popular with the community, encourage recycling and cut waste but before we sign up to one we need to find the model that best fits Queensland,’’ he said.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association A slow news month

with Sue Tanner If you think Tetragonula carbonariais a pasta dish, you should have been at the Friends meeting on Saturday, April 16, to hear Ryan Newis tell us about his research into this tiny native bee. Ryan is the recipient of the first FMCA Honors Scholarship at the University of the Sunshine Coast and very enthusiastic and knowledgeable on his chosen topic. It was a very successful meeting with lots of discussion and questions, very interesting. We met in the Verandah Room of the Maleny Community Centre. Michael Gillies, from council, updated members on the progress of the development and the planned ‘Sod Turning’ on May 20 and Les Hall updated on the progress of an exciting new book he is compiling full of beautiful art work from many local artists inspired by the rainforest. All the old buildings are now empty and the volunteers are working from a temporary Education Centre. While looking rather bland from the outside, the inside is light and bright and full of information, new hands-on activities for kids, the DVDs of birds or the forest playing, products/ souvenirs for sale, all our beautiful bird photographs along the wall and stickers for enthusiastic kids, who tell us of the wonderful things they have seen. The Friends appreciate the work of Michael, Dean, Suzanne and Rose who undertook most of the moving, cleaning etc. Remember the track is untouched so come for a visit and enjoy this unique patch of remnant sub-tropical rainforest in your backyard. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Congratulations to the businesses below from Glasshouse Country and Maleny that have been nominated for a Glassy award. Beerwah Hideaway is a function / wedding venue and boutique accommodation hosted by Simon and Jennifer Farrell, which they describe as affordable luxury. They are located on Steve Irwin Way at Beerwah. Beerwah Hair and Beauty is owned by a born and bred local Vicki Heading. Along with her daughter Kylie and team of qualified staff they offer the complete range of hair and beauty treatments, the salon is located in Simpson Street, Beerwah. Neddy's Nosebag is an icon of Beerwah, being the go-to place for simple and affordable food. Their popularity comes down to having value sized meals where nothing is skimped on, as well as everything made fresh instore, and served up by super friendly staff. V8 Supercuts – that’s right it is Supercuts not Supercars, Jules’ Barber Shop is located just a couple of doors down from Subway in Beerwah. She is known widely for quality haircuts for men, women and children of all ages. Victory Tea House and Antiques is a little ‘nana styled’ house at Glass House Mountains on the road to the ‘lookout’. They create wonderful vintage morning tea, lunches and high teas as well as selling antiques. It was set up earlier this year by talented local photographer Rhonnda Scott. Crookneck Retreat – this boutique cottage accommodation was established by Brett and Megan Standring and showcases the best the region offers … spectacular scenery, quality local products and services and welcoming hosts.

Glasshouse Country Meats – Murray and Michelle Samuel purchased the business located in the business centre of Glass House Mountains three years ago. The business has continued to grow and develop a loyal customer base and becoming the favoured local purveyor of fine meats. Total Microsystems provides sales, service and support for everything from home users, to businesses with computer networks. Daniel and Tara Moodie love helping homes and businesses to make their IT equipment work for them instead of against them. Pasta d'Vine was created by Oscar and Sue Schlapa in an authentic continental style, where you can experience a delicious variety from their comprehensive a la carte menu. Whether you fancy a quick and tasty snack, a house-made pasta or a more substantial meal, you’ll find it at Pasta d’Vine. Matilda Fruit Barn provides fresh retail and wholesale fruit and vegetables. Located at the Puma Service Station along Steve Irwin Way and opening 7 days from 7.00am to 6.00pm, Matilda’s is the much-loved one-stop local fruit and vegetable shop. Landsborough IGA is owned and operated by the Grigor Family, and is the heart of the Landsborough. They are all about their customers – listening to their customers and being able to stock what their customers want to see in-store is very important to the team at Landsborough IGA. KLM Energy Services have been operating since 1999. So owners Kel and Lorraine McNamarra must be doing something right as the local independent gas supplier. Their recipe for success is simple … keep it simple, fair and each customer is as important as the last.

Beerburrum’s sweet contribution The Queensland Government’s first ever innovation and investment summit will be held over three days this week bringing together some of the world’s best visionaries in technology and innovation to inspire Queenslanders. The summit will open with an interactive culinary event featuring some of the world’s best chefs. Internationally renowned Iron Chef Hiroyuki Sakai (from the well know Japanese cooking program Iron Chef) will travel to Queensland to showcase the State’s high quality produce with his signature innovative style alongside much loved Queensland celebrity chefs Matt Golinski and Alastair McLeod. Matt Golinski will be using Hive Haven Stingless Native Bee Honey from Beeburrum at the

Summit’s official dinner in Brisbane where there will be 600 attendees. Hive Haven owner Ann Ross said this is very exciting for them and great for Glasshouse Country and SEQ as we have the perfect climate to farm native bees and harvest their honey. “Matt called in yesterday to collect the native honey, which he will be using on stage. The honey will also be used by two other chefs as part of a competition cook off,” Ann said. Great work to Ann and Jeff – you’ve put Beerburrum on the culinary map for the Sunshine Coast.

Children’s experiential garden to inspire and delight An exciting transformation is taking shape at the Whipbird Walk’s children’s experiential garden at Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden with the Whipbird Village now complete and ready to be enjoyed. Director Infrastructure Services Andrew Ryan said the Whipbird Village was designed to entice both children and the young at heart to discover their whimsical side and interact with nature. “Among the newest additions to the experiential garden are beautiful Whipbird eggs carved from granite and new ‘pods’ created using living native plants which are entwined within a network of tracks, stepping stones and logs,” Mr Ryan said. “It is envisaged that when finally completed by June 2017, the Whipbird Walk will engage

children’s sense of sight, sound, touch and smell.” Friendsof the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardenpresident Malcolm Cox said the Friends had relished the opportunity to help transform the original Whipbird Walk, into a special place for Sunshine Coast families. “We believe our contribution speaks for everyone who loves botanic gardens and children alike, and we want to nurture them together,” Mr Cox said. “The Whipbird Village will provide children with unique experiences of the natural world through play and art as well as through direct contact,” he said. The group meet regularly at Sippy Downs to offer support, friendship and to exchange ideas, hints and tips. They are quite passionate about each other’s health and with making the community more aware of this mostly unknown but debilitating disease. All sufferers and their friends and family are welcome to come along for this very informal gathering. There are a range of health providers including a dentist and rheumatologist who will be coming along to future meetings to help educate and offer assistance with coping daily. Recently, Tony Van der Niet, Lympthatic Therapist from Eumundi came along to address the meeting with the advantages this type of treatment may have for Scleroderma sufferers. Tony is conducting a research trial into the benefits or effects of the treatment of patients with moderate symptoms with the results to be published through the Qld Scleroderma Association. Sheree Tweedale your home is where my heart is

“We recently asked Sheree Tweedale from Palmwoods Real Estate to assess and sell our property in West Woombye. We had tried two other Real Estate agents, paid a lot of money, and nothing seemed to be happening. Sheree immediately loved our property, reassessed the marketing, and did everything she could to highlight our property and place it in view of those who would love it and buy it. I had never imagined any Real Estate agent would insert furniture into the property, make sure the lawns were mowed, and then hold the open houses, make a movie of our property, and actually sell it rather than wait around for a buyer. Because sell it she did! We cannot emphasise how much of a relief it was to have a true professional look after the listing and actual sale of our property. If you have any Real Estate for sale and desire an honest assessment and effort, we suggest you save yourself time and heartache and highly recommend Sheree to get the job done.” Rob Shackleford - Owner 430-436 Blackall Range Road, West Woombye

You Said It Do we need to dual-lane Steve Irwin Way to help the Bruce Highway?

Should the Bruce Highway be triple-laned instead? No and Yes - in that order! The Glass House Mountains is a picture-perfect iconic region - Landsborough is a heritage village, Beerwah is the home of Australia Zoo, Glass House Mountains is the gateway village with Visitors Centre - the region has oodles of charm and quiet country appeal. Life is fairly slow and predictable in these little semirural train villages - and that is the reason many families choose to live and relocate here. They've left the ‘big smoke’, the ‘hustle and bustle’, the traffic jams and noise to smell clean, fresh unpolluted air! Building another lane on Steve Irwin Way will only destroy the many beauties of this area and the lifestyle that a few lucky thousand call ‘home’. There are a number of residential sub-divisions built along Steve Irwin Way - a main thoroughfare that gets noisy and busy enough at peak times - residents don't want any more noise and traffic! Build a third lane on the Bruce Highway. Complete the rail duplication project from Beerburrum to Nambour! Get people out of cars and using public transport! that is the main common-sense goal! Lynda M. Utting Beerwah

People in wheelchairs are important too

A friend’s husband is confined to a wheelchair and recently they went to do shopping at Woolworths. To their frustration they were advised that there was no wheelchair trolley to be found, so they did a small shop and went home. She rang Woolworths later in the day to see if the trolley was found as they wanted to do more shopping. The manager advised he had not been told that it was missing, so he went in search of the one trolley they have, and found it five kilometres from the shop. My friends were surprised to be informed that Woolworths did not plan to get any more trolleys. It is also disappointing that IGA doesn’t provide any wheelchair trolleys. In this day it is sad to see that customers in wheelchairs are not provided with these essential items to do their shopping. And as for the trolleys that have seats on them, these just aren’t always a solution as some people cannot get out of their wheelchairs to get into these. Julie Savage Beerwah

Moving with the times

My first impression of Banjo's Bakery Cafe was that it would be a great place to meet friends and enjoy their huge selection of food. However I was surprised that I could not see any items labelled gluten free in the cake section. So I asked the young lady behind the counter if they had any, she did not know the answer, but checked with a supervisor. I was astonished to hear that they didn’t stock any. In this day and age it is very rare to find anywhere that doesn't have at least one or two gluten free options to cater for those with such allergies and intolerances. All the other eateries in town offer gluten free choices, so Banjo's how about moving with the times? Dianne Viterale Glass House Mountains

Kilcoy

Did you know that in the township of Kilcoy they have 16 Bangladeshi males living in their town? All bar one is employed and paying taxes, the other one was employed, however, he had an accident at work. He said nothing as he thought he would be OK the next day, but was in fact unable to get out of bed. Not knowing any better, missed out on Work Cover and the Immigration Department not only took his Card away, they also took his Medicare card. All 16 young men are in fact an asset to the township of Kilcoy, having lived there these past three years and are members of Volunteer Services; these young men are all learning fire fighting and other skills and have mixed well into the community. They were required to send certain paperwork to the Australian Immigration department, that was done and the people of Kilcoy assisted greatly, photographs and paper cuttings were included and one would imagine, more than suffice in what was required. The paperwork also passed over the Desk of the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Peter Dutton, while one has had his application for a Temporary Protection Visa approved and others have had other visas issued, there are seven who have had their application denied. Why has Peter Dutton done nothing to assist their applications when the local community is so keen to have them continue working and contributing to their local community?

My suggestion, send 16 or more of our home grown youth who have never worked and have no wish to do so, and are living off our taxes. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

Your help would be appreciated

A local family in our community needs our support. The morning of April 20 a sad and tragic event occurred that is devastating and will change their life forever. A young family who is mourning the loss of their unborn child and fighting another big battle needs our rallying support to provide funds for funeral costs, travel to Royal Brisbane Hospital and living costs. Every dollar will mean the world to support this family and ease the burden on financial worries. Stop spending leaks and start saving ‘’Spending leaks” are the amounts of money that we spend on small things such as coffee, our favourite weekly magazines, going to the movies and snacks at the movies, just to name a few. We think they only cost us a few bucks, they don’t really matter. Because spending leaks are often the fun things like drinks or entertainment, don't cut them out completely. Instead, choose just one or two things to cut back on. Or think of ways to spend smarter. Some suggestions are: • Instead of spending $4.30 on a weekly magazine costing $223.60 over the year, take out a subscription, which will cost $149 for the year, delivered to your door and saves you $74.60. • An adult going to the movies twice a month costs $38.00, or $456.00 a year, that’s without going to the candy bar! Within a couple months the latest movies are out on DVD or ready to download and watch at your convenience. Downloading two $6.00 movies a month, saves you $312.00 a year.

• Let’s say at these movies you buy a medium drink and a medium bag of popcorn which costs approximately $13.00 or $312.00 a year. Take a drink and a bag of chips from home saves you $312 a year. • Coffee out costs you about $4.50, having one cup five days a week is $22.50 or $1,170 a year. Cut down to three a week, saves you $468.00 a year. All that saves $1,166 a year. That’s a holiday! So … where to go? Now that you are saving money ensure you have it in a high earning account. Jill Schefe, Parish worker - Calvary Lutheran Church Glasshouse Mountains As we pause to remember the great events of history as for example ANZAC Day and the 20th anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre, we respond in a way that inwardly speaks to us and says, 'We will never do that again'. But there were more wars. There has been death caused by firearms, despite the gun amnesty. Why, may we ask? We humans may never come up with an answer. Even in everyday life we are confronted from time to time with issues that seem out of our control. The Prophet, Isaiah writing in 650 BC offered us hope and new life to God’s people upon their return from exile in Babylon. In Isaiah 55, he writes, 'Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;and you who have no money come, buy and eat.Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Loving God, Loving People, Loving Life

So often, our lives, present and future are focussed on things that are worthless. We compare what we have to what someone else has. That attitude can only breed jealousy and envy. Power and superiority over other people becomes the catch cry. Whatever we have in life is what God has given us. He is the provider for all people, His gifts are free, totally free. The One who overcomes and conquers all fear and anxiety in life is Jesus Christ Himself who is the 'resurrection and the life.' Before His death on Good Friday, he ate a meal with His disciples. He said 'do this in remembrance of me.' The One Jesus, who gave His life on the cross for us at Easter is the one who also enables us now, to give thanks for all those who willingly gave their lives for us in battle. We have been given so much. Let us joyfully share those gifts with our Community. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Supporting local apprentices

By Sonia Clark Beerwah Small Engines has a long tradition of employing local apprentices that goes back as far as when the business started - nearly 40 years ago! Since 1977, numerous local lads have spent time learning the ropes and getting a qualification through the business. Their very first apprentice, Barry, ended up staying with the company for 25 years, and over the years many have stayed on to work with the family run business for a number of years. Even today, people who did their apprenticeship at Beerwah Small Engines many years ago keep coming back to buy parts or service equipment for their own businesses. Currently six working staff members have either completed or are completing their apprenticeship through the business. Their youngest team member Harry; who has been there 12 months, was just 15 when he originally started - while Jarred who is now 21, was 18 when he started. Both young men are working towards achieving their Certificate 111 in Outdoor Power Equipment and the entire apprenticeship takes four years. “It’s lovely having local boys from local families working with us. They are all like family to us, and are great workers who also have lots of fun. It’s great that we can support local employment,” said Donna from Beerwah Small Engines. Working full time, apprentices learn about all aspects of small outdoor equipment such as brush cutters, blowers and chainsaws as well as gaining in-depth understanding of domestic push mowers and ride on mowers. Under supervision they also learn about the business, customer service, computer and mechanical skills throughout their training period and attend sessions at TAFE throughout the year. Harry, Jarred, Alan, Shaun, Alex and Jonathan have all completed or are completing their apprenticeship at Beerwah Small Engines.

Autumn means fine warm days – just great for getting the kids outside and active in the backyard. To encourage your children to spend more time outside, you need to make sure your backyard landscape is kid-friendly. A lush green lawn is an inviting space. With the weather cooling down, it can be difficult to keep an average lawn looking green. There are some terrific new lawn varieties which don’t need a lot of water and can easily handle wear and tear. Backyard play areas need to be safe and secure. Screening with fences as well as plants and trees will enclose a garden and keep kids in. But remember to allow for gates that are lockable or have latches above the reach height of young children. If you have a pool, make sure the pool fence meets the standards and, if you have a water feature, be wary that children can drown in even the shallowest amount of water. Try to avoid any major changes in levels that require more than two steps. Kids easily fall down steps. Make them short in height and long in tread so children can manage them easily. Shade is important for children and good shade trees are a great asset in any garden. Large trees need a regular health check to make sure that they are safe to climb and that their branches are sound. Speak to a tree specialist about the safety of your backyard trees. A shade sail is a good alternative. In high-use play areas – like a play gym – a soft-fall zone made from 15mm pine bark mulch is a great idea. It is clean, soft and is easily topped up every now and again. Sandpits are popular with kids and easy to install. Make sure you use washed sand, which will not stain clothes. Cover the sandpit, just so that pet cats don’t leave any nasty surprises. Another important safety factor is to have good visibility from the house to the main play areas, so that adults can keep a watchful eye on the children. If you create a separate area for children, place a garden seat nearby so an adult can sit, watch and relax. Creating a raised garden bed with fresh edible plants is a great way to keep the kids outside and out of the fridge. Growing things like celery, parsley, carrots, beans and cherry tomatoes will not only keep them happy, but teach them good eating habits as well. One thing to remember when designing a kid-friendly backyard is scale. Everything in the adult world is too big and daunting for children, so think about reducing size for a child's play area. Stepping stones should be smaller with less distance for each step; paths should be narrow; and dwarf plants can be used to create a ‘land of the giants’ look. Using strange garden ornaments, like dinosaurs, fairies and zoo animals creates colour and excitement, stimulating the imagination and encouraging creative play. By creating a safe, but interesting, area for your children to play in, you can pass traditional Australian backyard experiences and memories onto them.

Sport Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Pam Marsden and Carolyn Gamble On Thursday, April 21, 68 Ladies competed in a two Person Aggregate Stableford. The weather was perfect and the course is in magnificent condition. Our sponsor for the day was Leith Barnes and we thank her for her generosity. This week’s pennant news saw the Bronze Team on the winning list, our Open and Weekend teams both going down. Our Bronze Team is nicely placed in second position on the ladder. Some success for our girls who travelled to other clubs during the week. Pauline Laurie was Runner Up in Div 3 at Pacific Harbour on Friday, and Mavis Brimelow was in the winning team at Mount Coolum on Wednesday. Well played girls! Results for Thursday:Winners:-Libby Gemmell and Audrey Girard with an amazing 75 points. Well done girls. I believe the handicapper may be interested in Libby’s scorecard, she played a blinder! Runners Up:-Noeline Annakin and Deb Rutherford with 70 points. NTP’s:- Sonia Kenway and Liz Flavelle on 2 and also on 5, Lea Garner and Carolyn Gamble on 16

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Ten pints of Guinness An American man walks into a pub in Ireland and clears his voice to the crowd of drinkers. He says, "I hear you Irish are a bunch of hard drinkers. I'll give $500.00 American dollars to anybody in here who can drink 10 pints of Guinness back-to-back." The room is quiet and no one takes up the Texan's offer. One man even leaves. Thirty minutes later the same gentleman who left shows back up and taps the Texan on the shoulder. "Is your bet still good?" he asks.

The Texan says yes, and asks the bartender to line up 10 pints of Guinness. Immediately the Irishman tears into all 10 of the pint glasses drinking them all back-to-back. The other pub patrons cheer as the Texan sits in amazement. The Texan gives the Irishman the $500.00 and says, "If ya don't mind me askin', where did you go for that 30 minutes you were gone?" The Irishman replies, "Oh...I had to go to the pub down the street to see if I could do it first.” Submitted by Kim, Reesville

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 27/04/2016 TAURUS April 21 – May 20 There could be intense emotional exchanges so you might have to be repairing a misunderstanding after a dispute! All this may have been caused by you being a bull in a china shop! Suggestion is to rest your fighting nerves and don’t look to rule over others. Mercury retrogrades making you introspective. GEMINI May 21 – June 21 No one could blame you for bowing out of a social commitment. This is because your ruler Mercury, having just turned retrograde, wants you to change direction. You may find yourself unavailable to others over the next three weeks. Find a constructive physical outlet, but don’t push your limits. CANCER June 22 – July 22 If you find yourself out of energy for the last week of this month it is perhaps caused by Mercury going retrograde. Lookout for misunderstandings with friends, delays in transport and a good three weeks ahead to form a strategy to talk things out. You may count on the support of someone socially. LEO July 23 – August 22 Allow everyone to have their opinions, so try to keep your own personal ego in a quiet place as the end of the month sees Mercury retrograde, and nearly everyone rehashes old hurts and wounds. Communication involving work can stall. Some transport sees delays so make extra time for special events.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 We see two planets moving into the sign of Taurus, one is Mercury and the other is Venus. Mercury going retrograde quiets down your creative urge to thrust forward with your career. Review the past to get a better handle on your future. Venus brings harmony, love and affection. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You might find it easy to be constructive in a physical outlet, however don’t overdo it or wear yourself out. Mercury is now in the process of moving backwards and lasting for three weeks it may point to you unearthing new resources, talents, income or job contracts. Venus improves your home values. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Over the last weekend this month, you see many favours returned back to you. This is because Mercury in Taurus retrogrades in your information zone. Venus also being in Taurus, brings harmony with Mercury, and surprisingly you will find peace in private places that are easier to find now. Some travel delays. ARIES March 21 – April20 You might find you are caught in the spell of a fantasy that may be distracting and hard to dispel. It probably comes from someone with whom you have an infatuation. Mercury comes to a stop and goes retrograde now, so this being in your financial sector, means be careful with your money!

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The sociable planet Venus enters the soft spoken and charming Taurus sign, lighting up your path to interactive harmony. As Mercury, your ruler, retrogrades for three weeks, it may turn the tables on travel or arranged plans. If there is a conflict over who is in charge maybe just become a bystander now. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 There are some powerful planets all going retrograde by the end of the month and into May. These bring up challenges from the past or concern a payment that needs focus. Suggest you don’t lose your temper even if others do so. It is a good time to reapply for a loan if necessary. Share in some fun. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Mercury in Taurus now retrogrades for three weeks, and so this sees partners into time spent together reviewing the past. This helps overcoming misunderstandings. As Venus enters Taurus this makes up a little bit for Mercury being retrograde. You seek harmony, comfort, love and security. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Under the planets Saturn and Mars in your sign there is the possibility that someone comes along and throws cold water on one of your plans. Just don’t allow yourself to get steamrolled by a controlling self-serving individual. Maintain a clear line of separation between work and play at this time.
