S
o depending on which day your paper is delivered, school kids everywhere have either made their way back to school, or are just about to. Of course some will have almost run through the school gates, more than ready to get back to spend time with their friends or they have had to be dragged kicking and screaming from mum and dads arms! On the cover we have featured one little Landsborough Preppie who was more than happy to put his school uniform on and do a trial run for the photo last week. Marlo was so keen to finally be going to school with his big brother Archie who is in Year 6. I love seeing the little Prep students at the beginning of the year, they just seem so small in their big uniforms, and even bigger back packs. It always makes me think about an interview I did with one little Preppie years ago - following his first day of school, he very clearly told me – it had definitely been ‘the best day of his whole life’ so far. I hope lots of kids this week felt the same way, as that has got to be one of the lovely things in life that you can continue to have many more of these ‘best days so far’ in the future. Regards,

Local News Off to school we go This week hundreds of children throughout the local area will be starting school for the first time as they go into Prep, and many others will be returning for another year. Last week GC&M News caught up with a couple of these ‘little ones’ to see what they were most looking forward to about starting school and this is what they had to say. Taylor and Jack Thomson are looking forward to being preppies. Dad Jamie said with two older siblings already at the school and the familiarisation / orientation sessions last year he is sure the first day of school will go smoothly. When we asked Marlo what he was most looking forward to about starting school, he was pretty sure that it was ‘the big playground’. Mum Caroline said she is looking forward to seeing Marlo reach another milestone, and while she is not expecting any tears from Marlo, she may shed a few tears of her own. Constable Lowndes from Beerwah reminded me to let you all know that it’s also important for everyone in the community (not just school parents) to remember that with school starting up again it also means the recommencement of School Zones around all schools.

Pathway to new Glass House playground The first step towards a major new parkland in Glass House Mountains took shape last week. Contractors were putting the final touches to a concrete path down Page Street leading into the park which Sunshine Coast Council has big plans for. Last year council ran a consultation process asking locals what facilities and landscapes they would like to see developed across the 38 hectare site. Divisional 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski was pleasantly surprised that the work has been completed ahead of schedule. “The pathway is the initial stage of work for the Glass House District Park,” he said. “This pathway provides a key link from Coonowrin Road to the parkland and is the start of the greater pathway network. “The next stage is to continue the path across to an exciting new playground to be constructed in the coming months.”

Positive response to e-petition for local couple Throughout 2015 there has been much media attention given to the issue of domestic violence, which has created increased awareness about how prevalent the issue is, and the drastic impacts it can have in all communities. Maleny couple Ron and Kathryn Little have experienced first-hand these consequences, with their daughter being a victim of domestic violence. And the complex and lengthy legal process required for the issuing of Domestic Violence Protection Orders has added enormously to their frustrations. They decided it was time for them to act and to call for common sense from our politicians to improve the process and ultimately reduce the financial outlay, emotional impact and years of legal process that victims and their supporters can encounter. Last year they approached their State Member, Andrew Powell and he suggested that they establish an e-petition about the duration of Domestic Violence Protection Orders (DVPO) which he would happily sponsor through Parliament on their behalf. Our system currently allows for the DVPO to be in place for a two year period or less and for longer at the discretion of the court. But according to Ron, the period of an order is generally two years, and rarely is it made longer by the court. "It is ridiculous in many instances family law disputes can take up to five years to resolve and during that time the perpetrator can continue to undertake acts of domestic violence whether they be physical, emotional, or financial," he said. "Ultimately we would like to see these orders put in place for life, or until the order is ended by the court, with the condition that the order cannot be ended before a five year period." On December 1 last year, Andrew Powell tabled the e-petition - which received 204 signatures of support -in Parliament, and the Littles have since been advised that this issue is one that is being considered under the review by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services. The current review is in response to the 'Not Now Not Ever: Putting an end to Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland' report completed in August 2015 by a special taskforce led by Dame Quentin Bryce.
In responding to the e-petition the Minister for the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, Ms Deb Fentiman said the taskforce has made a number of specific recommendations for legislative amendments which are being prioritised and implemented by the Queensland Government. Andrew Powell is pleased to have been able to assist the Littles. "Domestic violence is a significant issue and the process of review that is currently underway has received bipartisan support," said Andrew. "Already in the last months of the year there have been a number of changes that have come before Parliament and have been endorsed. "I was pleased to be able to work with the Littles and table their petition, and while the response received is not a guarantee that what the Little's are seeking will happen, it is a positive step knowing that it is part of review process that is seeking to bring genuine change." Ron and Kathryn have thanked Andrew for his support and they are looking forward to seeing their request being favourably considered in the review process.

Sun bears get creative help Jana Stadelmann of Maleny was one of four University of the Sunshine Coast Design students who recently helped design a brighter future for Sun Bears in Borneo. The students completed a 10-day work placement with the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sabah that involved producing a new website and educational materials for the organisation. This centre provides care and rehabilitation for rescued Sun Bears, a species listed as vulnerable following a 30% drop in its population over the past 30 years. USC students are also involved in an ongoing project to produce interpretive signage for visitors at the newly opened centre. Senior Lecturer in Art and Design Kevin Todd said resources like a website and information booklets were crucial for not-for-profit groups like the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. “I think the interpretive signage really deepens the experience for a lot of the visitors, because it provides some context for the threats being faced by sun bears,” he said. “Other students have also produced a 52-page educational booklet in Malay, Chinese and English language, to be used by schools. “The students’ work will help this small, developing group reach its fundraising goals and, in turn, grow the organisation. “This is real work for the students, not a university project, and they’ve now got something in their portfolios that they can demonstrate made an impact in the real world.” The organisation website is now live at www. bsbcc.org.my and the booklet is available as a PDF download.
Local Heroes Grants The start of a new year is always a busy time for sporting associations and community groups as they begin to set out their goals for the year. In the case of sporting groups, they’re also preparing themselves for the onslaught of new members ready to sign on to participate in a year of sporting activities. To assist Glass House community groups with some of their costs, local MP Andrew Powell, is pleased to announce his 2016 Local Heroes Grants. “As the local Member I have the opportunity to use my Parliamentary allowance to assist community groups with a range of activities, including fundraisers, raffle prizes and donations. “These grants will take my assistance one step further and allow groups to nominate for a donation of $250.00. And I will be offering four grants, six times a year - every second month. “Glass House also has a growing number of people in our community who are involved in individual sporting competitions or volunteer projects that are welcome to apply to this twomonthly grant program. “I’ll be keeping the application process really simple - I know how busy you are and don’t want to waste your time unnecessarily. Just go to my website and click on the Local Heroes Grant icon to get your nomination in the mix,” he said. Andrew’s website is www.andrewpowell.com.au

Maleny Show Society backs winner
By Sonia Clark
From Friday, January 15 through to Sunday January 17, delegates from the Maleny Agricultural Show Society attended the third biannual Queensland Shows Conference held at the University Of Queensland’s Gatton Campus. With over 140 attendees and speakers from around Australia, the conference was a great way for delegates to engage with other agricultural and show society professionals. Run by the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies (QCAS), the conference was hosted by ‘Queensland Shows Next Generation’ with the aim this year to target a wider show community. With a key theme of sustainability and innovation, the conference focussed on education and the greater use of technology in delivering a better show experience – delegates learnt new skills, shared best practice tips and networked. Vice president of the Maleny Show Society Monica Skerman attended, as well as Stacey Bentley and Sarah Peters, who also spoke at two events. “We’ve returned from the conference feeling more motivated and inspired,” said Monica. “There were lots of new ideas discussed about ways to improve show outcomes and further educate people about country living. We also discussed ways in which we can make the show more accessible to both country and city people.” This year the conference also showcased the inaugural Queensland Show Awards. This new initiative featured three categories of awards and was developed by the Next Generation Committee in order to recognise excellence in the agricultural show movement.

Maleny Show Society Vice President Monica Skerman accepting the award on behalf of Jessica Wild In an exciting achievement - Jessica Wild (who has been heavily involved in the Maleny Show all her life and also instigated the hugely popular ‘Small Farmers Tent’ program) was nominated for - and won the inaugural ‘Outstanding Contribution by an Individual’ award. Nominations for the award were received from throughout Queensland’s 128 agricultural show societies. Last minute work commitments meant that Jess was unable to attend the conference; however Monica accepted the award on her behalf. “We were over the moon when they announced that Jessica had won. All Jessica’s hard work and foresight to include the young farmers program into our show - showed that in many ways she was ahead of many other regional shows in her vision and it is a great achievement,” said Monica. In other Maleny Show society news, the newly revamped website has gone live. Updated by KH Designs, check out the new look site at http:// www.malenyshowsociety.org.au for updates about the 2016 show.

Well Christmas and New Year have come and gone and it’s been great to see that the huge majority of people have been so well behaved. At the time of writing this Australia Day is still to come and I’m sure with our beautiful South East Queensland weather there are still a number of backyard barbecues and get-togethers to come for the summer. Just remember while it’s great to enjoy yourself, don’t forget to look out for your mates and as has been tragically seen so recently - One punch can kill.

Recent incidents in our beautiful Glass House Mountains National Park areas highlight some important issues. If you are planning to go for a walk or climb in either the Glass House Mountains or anywhere else, especially if you are going on your own, please make sure you tell someone where you are going and let them know what time you expect to be back. Even if you think you will be finished before the day gets too hot, make sure you take sufficient water and a snack, even if it’s just a muesli bar, in case you end up out there for longer than anticipated. It’s important to make sure the trail or climb that you choose is suitable for you. There are many different trails, some of which are not suitable for inexperienced walkers. For full details check online www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/ parks/glass-house-mountains. This is just one of many useful sites that will let you know which trail is the best for you.

Introducing Alice Spittle By Sonia Clark Alice Spittle is an accomplished artist who expresses herself through a number of mediums including traditionally inspired Maori weaving, painting and mixed media. Growing up in a creative environment in New Zealand, Alice is best described as a Maori contemporary artist who seeks to explore life creatively through as many complementary art forms as she can. Alice studied Maori Design and Art at Te Wananga O Raukawa in Otaki (2002) where she immersed herself in her Maori heritage learning about traditional weaving as well as the history and language of the art and culture. From here she started her journey of exploration with painting. Moving to Christchurch, she sought inspiration from established Maori artists and thriving in this creative environment Alice exhibited and sold her works both nationally and internationally. During this time she also offered workshops in painting and weaving. After experiencing both major earthquakes in Christchurch, Alice and her family moved to North Brisbane in 2011 when her youngest daughter was only two-weeks-old. Hoping to connect with other like-minded artists, in 2012, Alice became a founding member of the ‘Whatu Manawa’ multi art collective. With a philosophy of teaching, sharing and learning, the group of predominately Maori painters, sculptors, weavers and carvers, organically developed, and now with around 20 core artists, the collective has members from the Sunshine Coast through to the Gold Coast. In July last year, Alice and her family moved to the creative hub of Maleny. Over the years, Alice found that she was spending more and more time around the Hinterland town and having enrolled their youngest daughter Ruby at The River School, it made sense to make the permanent move. Alice has now established her studio in Maleny and is committed to the daily practice of her art. She is deeply passionate about creating artworks that inspire, challenge or initiate change. She is constantly looking to further her creative output by drawing inspiration from her current environment and incorporating other mediums into her work like copper and fibres. “I am so excited about getting to know the community up here in Maleny. I look forward to connecting with others and nature and getting creative and sharing my skills,” she said. Drawing on her 10 year creative teaching background in New Zealand and Australia, Alice is offering a number of weaving (Raranga) with New Zealand flax (harakeke) workshops as well as art and wellbeing retreats throughout the coming year at the beautiful and serene Kondallila Eco Resort. Focussing on traditional Maori techniques, coupled with contemporary ideas, Alice will teach and facilitate around the exploration of the process, traditions and Tikana/protocols around weaving. Relaunch at All in One Fitness Beerwah
By Sonia Clark All in One Fitness Centre is set to relaunch in style with a massive morning of fitness, fun and festivities at their Beerwah club on Saturday, February 6 from 9.00am - 1.00pm. Formally known as Maximise Fitness - new owner Taz Calandruccio took over direction of the Beerwah and Mooloolah clubs in October last year. Since then, Taz and the team have been busy talking with their members and fine tuning the club to make sure that the focus is firmly based on what members want. The team have worked extremely hard to ensure that the newly rebranded clubs reflect a positive and friendly atmosphere. Even the name ‘All in One Fitness’ has been carefully chosen to indicate the inclusive nature of the business. Everyone is welcome and Taz and the team are committed to bringing back friendly, accessible and personalised service to the fitness industry. Listening to what members want has meant more classes and a reintroduction of some of the more traditional fitness class favourites. Currently the Beerwah club is offering 16 weekly instructor led classes including Pilates, Step, Yoga and Zumba, and Mooloolah is offering 12 classes. The crèche at Beerwah is fully operational with plans to offer a similar full service at Mooloolah in the coming months. “Feedback from members has been awesome. Our numbers are increasing already and the club at Mooloolah is just booming!” said Taz. The club has 10 trainers many of whom have years of fitness industry experience. They all have diverse backgrounds and every staff member is dedicated to helping members reach their individual fitness goals. Come along to the relaunch day and take advantage of the special membership offer on the day of $15.00 weekly membership (includes all classes), no joining fee and two weeks membership for free. 2/62 Simpson Street. For more details contact the club at Beerwah, 5439 0949, Mooloolah 5494 7236.

Chiropractic in the news Positive Side Effects of Chiropractic Did you know that the drug sildenafil (Viagra) was originally intended for the treatment of high blood pressure and heart-related chest pain? During the clinical trials, many of the patients reported a different and very noticeable side effect. Because the reports were so widespread, further investigation was performed and now Viagra is marketed around the world for a very different treatment than it was originally intended. The chiropractic profession is currently going through something very similar. Since chiropractic has grown in popularity, patients have been reporting other health improvements in addition to pain relief. Better sleep, better digestion, stronger immune function, relief of colic in babies, and the list goes on.
The theory behind these health improvements is that the spine affects the Nervous System, because the nerves pass through the spine. We become paralysed if our nerves are completely cut off, such as when someone breaks their neck. So the conclusion is that if a spinal misalignment partially interrupts the nerve messages, the body will still work but not as well as it should. When the body isn't working well, we get all kinds of symptoms. When chiropractors improve the function of the spine and nervous system, symptoms often improve. You may have noticed chiropractic received a lot of attention in the news last week as some chiropractors have made claims to ‘treat’ health conditions other than neck and back pain. It is understandable why these claims to cure have been made – because they are commonly reported in chiropractic offices. But what the chiropractic profession is lacking is the very large studies that prove chiropractic is an effective treatment for each specific symptom. Pfizer was thrilled to dump millions of dollars into the follow-up research on Viagra to prove it worked for ED, as they knew they accidentally hit the jackpot. In 2008 alone, Viagra generated (US) $1.93 billion. Unfortunately for chiropractic, the expense and resources for chiropractic studies currently fall on individual chiropractors or small groups. For this reason, chiropractic studies are currently performed on a small scale, and are often not accepted as ‘proof’, so government guidelines prohibit chiropractors from making these claims in advertisements. There are no studies to say that chiropractic does not work for those conditions, but there are also not enough ‘acceptable’ studies to say that it does. As chiropractors compile more and more data, I believe there will one day be sufficient evidence to validate what so many patients are reporting when they receive chiropractic care. I hope this sheds some light on why chiropractors received so much news coverage last week. If you would like any further information on chiropractic care, Dr Braxton is happy to answer any questions or concerns you might have. Community Centre not a dumping ground
By Sonia Clark The Mooloolah Valley Community Centre Op Shop has been running successfully since 2010. The success of the Op Shop has relied on the generosity of both the dedicated volunteers and the support and donations of the local community. Unfortunately in a sea of positive community mindedness occasionally there are those whose actions fail to benefit the community. One area of concern that was highlighted over the Christmas period was the unnecessary dumping of completely unusable items at the back of the Community Centre. While the Centre wants to reiterate that most people do the right thing and enjoy the mutual benefit of supporting one of the best not-for-profit op shops on the Coast, there are a small number of people who don’t understand that by dumping unusable and bulky unsellable items, they show a complete lack of respect for others, in their community. Most services at the Centre are carried out by volunteers - some of whom are elderly. So when people dump items at the Centre it ties up valuable volunteer energy, resources and time. The Centre looks forward to continuing to offer the Community Op Shop and respectfully requests that people consider their actions before dumping items for others to clean up.
Woodford family win a Springfree trampoline Last year in the lead up to Christmas, Springfree Trampolines ran a competition through GC&M News that gave one lucky family the chance to win a trampoline valued at over $1400.00. The Campbell family from Woodford were very excited to find out the Tuesday before Christmas that they had won and now the whole family of four are enjoying the benefits of ‘the world’s safest trampoline’. The family have two young children and moved to Woodford around a year and half ago. They are in the process of setting up a family home-based business so any available income has been invested in getting the business established. Winning the Springfree trampoline really was the ultimate Christmas gift - especially for the two young boys. Mum Erika said they didn’t believe at first that they had won. “This is the first time we had won a competition and our youngest son is just beside himself with excitement. This has been the best present for all of us!” The family now intend to make the most of their new trampoline, especially their youngest son who has spent many happy hours already on what he calls the ‘jump-a-line’. The Caloundra Family History Research
The Glasshouse Community Hall is turning 100! Celebration planned for September On April 14,1915 (just 11 days before the landing at Gallipoli in fact) Mr James Forsythe MLA wrote to the Dept of Public Lands seeking, on behalf of the residents of the Glasshouse Mountains district, an area of land for a School of Arts Reserve. He requested an area of two acres – an area large enough to hold a tennis court and horse paddock for horses and traps when settlers came in at night. It was recommended this block be on the western side of the rail line but not on land that could be used for subdivision. Later in 1915 the designated land was surveyed and, in January 1916, a final list of trustees was submitted. In the Government Gazette of 8/6/1916 the School of Arts was proclaimed and the approved Trustees named as Thomas Gilvear, George Jarvis, Wilfred Hare, Frank Gowen, Christopher Wilson and Charles Benn. Finance was secured (believed to be 800
pounds) and in March a contract was let for the construction of the Hall. It is believed the building was erected by a Mr Hendren. Construction continued between April and the opening in September and, although no details regarding this period were recorded, Jim and Rob Fullerton later recalled how, as bits of boys, they rolled up their sleeves and got busy getting stumps, as well as assisting with clearing the ground. The School of Arts was officially opened at a luncheon on Saturday, September 9, 1916 by Mr James Forsythe MLA with Mr C Wilson (President of the local Progress Association) presiding at the luncheon. Glasshouse Community Hall (formerly the Glasshouse Mountains School of Arts) is celebrating its centenary this year with a ‘Back to Glasshouse Day’ on Saturday, September 10. Further details to be advised, but mark this date in your diary. Enquiries to John Winterhoff on 5496 9349 or Elaine Reeves on 5496 9134.

Her talk was in preparation for the group’s upcoming bus trip to Brisbane on Tuesday, February 9. Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting and join the members on the bus trip. Scholarship for the Performing Arts 2016 The Events Centre Caloundra is proud to announce that applications for the Scholarship of Performing Arts 2016 are now being accepted. The annual Scholarship of $2,500 will assist a young Sunshine Coast student towards their future study in Performing Arts. Since 2008 the Centre has provided financial support for eight talented locals to pursue their goals and career in the arts. The Scholarship is designed to provide assistance to a Sunshine Coast resident, 25 years or younger, undertaking a second year of a full-time accredited tertiary level educational in the performing arts in 2016. It provides students with a one-off financial bursary to assist them in their career development with funding for their studies, equipment or related projects. Last year’s winner, Nicole Neil of Mooloolaba, was awarded the Scholarship for the Performing Arts to commend her outstanding dedication to stage management. Nicole is currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts – Technical Production at the Queensland University of Technology and she has been doing everything in her power to work on as many theatre productions as possible to expand her knowledge and experience. The Events Centre General Manager Gary Mears said the Sunshine Coast has an abundant wealth of creative youth and this scholarship recognises the importance of fostering local talent to achieve their ambitions as a performer or arts worker. “The Events Centre is a hub for nurturing and presenting cultural development opportunities including performing arts programs for children, youth and seniors,” he said. Applications for The Events Centre Scholarship for the Performing Arts 2016 close on Monday, February 1 and information is available at http:// www.theeventscentre.com.au/getinvolved/scholarship. 2015 Winner Nicole Neil

Glass House Country View Club
Contributed by Pauline Clarke Our annual general meeting was held on Wednesday, January 20, at the Glass House Sports Club followed by an excellent quiche lunch. We were delighted to have two visitors attend, Clare Dexter from the Frazer Coast View Club and Felicity Crawford a local from Glass House. The new committee for 2016 was elected and can be seen above. We received some very sad news that our 99 year old member, Val Burrell, passed away on the morning of our meeting. Val was a beautiful person and a very dear friend to us all. She will be sadly missed and we pass our heartfelt condolences to her family. The speaker for our next meeting at the Glass House Sports Club, 11.00am for 11.30am on February 17, will be Kathryn Rock from the Suncoast Chiropractic Centre. Considering the aches and pains that exist within our members we should receive a record turnout! Our next social outing will be to Caloundra on February 3 meeting at the Beerwah Library at 9.15am for car pooling. We will start with morning tea at La Promenade café on the Esplanade, move on to the Arts Centre to view the ‘Black & White’ exhibition and end up with everyone’s favourite, Op Shopping. We always welcome new members; just turn up to one of our meetings or outings. View Clubs throughout Australia have 17,000 members and are a part of the Smith Family. We support Smith Family activities and in the Glass House club we pay particular attention to the ‘Learning for Life’ program. We are only a small club but we already provide financial support to four under privileged children to assist in their education from primary through to tertiary schooling. Business feature

This Year I WILL... Set a New Year’s resolution – the right way!
New Year, new goals. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift shares five easy tips to help make your 2016 resolutions last the distance. Whether you love or loathe New Year’s resolutions, setting personal goals is a great way to help keep your mind and body feeling healthy and happy. However, keeping a New Year’s resolution can often be a challenge. Whether your goal is to quit junk food, lose a bit of weight, or try something new, it’s important to get prepared. We’ve got five tips to help get you started. One, start small. The key is to make sure that you set realistic and achievable goals. Unfortunately, making too many changes too
quickly or becoming discouraged after initial setbacks can cause people to resume old habits. Start by setting small goals that have lasting effects like implementing healthy dietary changes or increasing your daily physical activity, one step at a time. Two, don’t give up. If you feel like giving up, remind yourself why you decided to change and how your action will benefit your health in the short and long term. Also take the time to celebrate how far you have come. There is a real sense of accomplishment in reflecting on how far you have progressed and seeing the commitment you’ve made come to fruition. Three, plan. Develop a timeline and include small achievable goals throughout the journey to help motivate you through each step. Include rewards such as a massage or time with friends when you reach each milestone. This will inspire you to not give up and offers a beneficial and healthy incentive.
Four, identify obstacles. What are some of the challenges that might arise and how will you handle them when they do? For example, if your resolution is to lose weight or cut out unhealthy foods from your diet, take the time to clean out your pantry to limit temptation. Identifying obstacles before you start and being aware of potential challenges will help you reach your goal. Five, get a buddy. Tell a trusted friend or family member about your New Year’s resolution and ask them to help keep you accountable. A word of encouragement from someone else can go a long way in ensuring you reach your goals. Follow these five tips to help make 2016 a year to remember. From all here at CCQ, have a Happy and Healthy New Year! More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available at www.cancerqld.org. au or call Cancer Council on 13 11 20.

Walking Group - The Mooloolah Mob
Contributed by Helen Weil Here we are in 2016 and still walking each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 6.30am. We meet at Martin Rungert Park, right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes around the local area. Walking is for about an hour and it is a great way to start the day and to make new friends. This is a National Heart Foundation group activity with certificates and awards for number of walks and attaining certain goals. Most of all it is about staying active and healthy in a friendly social environment. You don’t have to walk every day, or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can. We have our speedy walkers who cover a greater distance and we have our less speedy walkers who maintain a more average pace, but we all walk, and that is what is important. Please consider coming along to enjoy the social aspect of belonging to a friendly group as well as the health benefits of regular walking. New walkers always welcome. Do hope to see you soon. For more details phone Helen on 5494 7496.
Become a friend of your local library If you love books, helping others and have some spare time on your side, you may wish to volunteer at your local library. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the recently endorsed Sunshine Coast Social Strategy 2015 highlighted the importance of ensuring people and places were connected. “Council’s libraries are a great place to start as they are thriving community hubs which welcome people of all ages through their doors each and every day,” Cr McKay said. “The benefits of volunteering are significant and include improving your health and wellbeing, meeting new friends, helping others and being part of something that makes a positive contribution to where you live. “It’s because of these benefits that the Social Strategy and council have committed to a target of increasing volunteering participation across our community. “Through our Social Strategy, council aims to improve the capacity of volunteers and volunteer organisations and provide ongoing opportunities for people to undertake volunteering activities. “Currently one in five of our population contribute to volunteering; however our aim is to do even better and increase this to one in four. “It is encouraging to know that as a volunteer your contribution will support your own
wellbeing and connection, as well as make a difference in your community.” Glass House Mountains resident Hazel McConnell said prior to moving to Australia in 2008 she had been involved with a similar program in New Zealand. “I have been a friend of the Beerwah Library for three years, now assisting with the readers group and delivering books to people who are not able to visit the library themselves,” she said. “I feel that the readers group makes quite a difference to seniors with dementia as sometimes when reading to them, you spark a memory, and it gives me a real buzz. “I have one gentleman who cannot speak but when reading a funny story he smiles and his facial expressions tell it all. I get just as much pleasure reading to my oldies as they get out of it. “There is also another lady I deliver books to who turns 99 in a couple of weeks, and is still an avid reader.” Hazel said she would definitely recommend volunteering as a friend of the library as there are many different areas people can get involved in. “I volunteer for roughly 2.5 hours per week plus extra if I get involved in fundraising events,” she said. If you would like to volunteer at your local library phone 5475 8989 or visit council’s library website to register your interest.
JP available on Saturday at Beerwah Library Beerwah Library already has a JP available each weekday between 10.00am – 12.30pm, and from January 30 they will be extending the service to
the same times on a Saturday. Maleny Library has a JP available on a Monday from 9.00am – 1.00pm and on Friday from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

Groot gearing up for Rally By Sonia Clark Groot the Ute is set to take on the 2016 ‘Super Endeavour Rally - Red Centre and Lake Eyre Adventure’ in June year. Groot, car #311 is being entered in the epic 18 day super adventure by Ian Rodgers from R&R Hire Services. This will be the second Endeavour rally that Ian and his mate Scotty Law will be entering to ‘raise dust and dollars’. Ian purchased the truck in March 2015 and Groot the truck certainly draws attention. Billed as the ultimate bloke magnet, Groot is a Dodge Power Wagon with a very interesting history. The vehicle was originally made by Dodge in 1945 and was modified with the multi use rear tray to be able to carry soldiers, weapons and also to be used as an ambulance. The truck was then used in Palestine during WW2 by the Australian Army (Long Range Desert Group) and then after the war – it was abandoned in the desert until it was found and restored about 12 years ago. Since being restored, the vehicle has twice gone across the Simpson Desert and was then parked up for around nine years. Now renamed Groot (the African word for large or Australian for ‘Bloody Great Ute!) the truck has had a few upgrades, with a few more gadgets to be unveiled in time for the super rally. The Super Endeavour Rally allows participants to support the great work of The Endeavour Foundation which seeks to make a positive difference for people with disabilities. Ian and Scotty are looking forward to catching up with old and new friends, “causing mischief and mayhem” and driving through parts of Australia not normally seen by the public.
Aussie World New Product - Annual pass
“The rally makes you realise how lucky we are to live in Australia and to have an event such as this to showcase the country, and also to be able to raise much-needed funds for people with disabilities. It has been a great honor to be part of this great charity,” said Ian. On March 12, there will be a Groot appreciation day at Archer Falls at Mt Archer (near Woodford). The event will feature numerous car clubs meeting up for a massive show and shine day and rally drag event; the day will also feature Monster trucks. For anyone who would like to donate to this event, or would be interested in joining and competing in a rally fun run you can visit the Endeavour rally web site at www.great. endeavour.com.au To support Groot to raise dust for dollars, click on the ‘donate to a team’ button and select team Groot car 311.
Aussie World, the largest Theme park on the Sunshine Coast, is excited to announce the release of our inaugural Annual Pass. The Annual Pass was released just in time for Christmas and the School holidays. They are a great idea for the entire family or those visiting friends and family who can enjoy the great value, fun and entertainment for a whole year. “There has been a constant and growing demand for this from our loyal visitors who return time and time again to enjoy our theme park. We're all about providing a bit of fun for everyone and are excited to announce that our new Annual Pass holders can enjoy that experience any day they like,” said Aussie World CEO, Aaron Flanagan. “The members will not only receive unlimited entry for the year, but will also experience exclusive member deals within the park, The Pub at Aussie World, and in our retail village. You Said It Top effort
Just wanted to say a big thank-you to Sharon and the team at Club Glasshouse for the wonderful support they provided for an event held on December 9. The event was attended by the students from the graduating Year 6 classes from Glass House Mountains State School as well as their families. With short notice provided the staff were very accommodating and supportive in helping get the event up and running. The event was a great night enjoyed by the 165 in attendance. So a big thank-you from the students and their families for the great customer service. Robyn Warn and Mary Lister Glass House Mountains
Mystery noise
The ‘noise’ is back at Crohamhurst. After a month or so of quiet, the noise is back - it woke me at 5.00am this morning. Does anyone know what it is? It started in the middle of last year and it’s coming from somewhere between Candle Mountain Drive and Crohamhurst Road. It sounds like a blast furnace or a jet engine, and sometimes it starts before dawn and doesn’t stop until well after dark. We are all used to the sounds of tractors and bulldozers, and even motorbikes, as part of the background noise of living in a rural area, but this is something else. Michèle Devèze Crohamhurst

It looks like there is another email scam doing the rounds. Glass House local Bob Waldock sent us through the scam email which is ‘supposedly’ a traffic infringement notice delivered to his wife’s email address. Bob pointed out that looking at the image it would be easy for an older person or somebody new to the internet, to not be aware that this is a scam, $179.00 is a decent amount of money to lose. There are a couple of things that raised his suspicion, such as the company email address that it is sent from, is India. Also it says the Federal Police are issuing the traffic infringement notices and they certainly would not give you an option to ‘Unsubscribe’, Bob said. “Whilst I am pretty sure that the Federal Police could track a person’s email address I doubt very much they would send something like this to it. “Anyone receiving this email should not click through on any links,” he said.

Another reader Diane Gudgen has also contacted us about another fraudulent email going around about a new spider. The email is supposedly from the Red Cross, and fortunately she decided to check with the Red Cross and of course it is a big fat lie. Diane suggested that maybe people like her who are unused to computer frauds, could do with a reminder about deleting them straight away!

The Sunshine Coast lives up to its name when it comes to harnessing sunshine Sunny Coasters can use what nature provides in abundance to harness solar power and make positive changes. One way you can do this is to give up your dependence on large energy companies and generate your own electricity, which will reduce your carbon footprint and protect your environment, increase the value of your home, but best of all save you money. Solar energy is sustainable for energy consumption; it’s indefinitely renewable while the sun keeps shining. All you need is a roof, sunshine and the funds to set up solar power. If you don’t have access to ready funds Maleny Credit Union has slashed the interest rate on our Solar Loan so you can slash your power bills.

Environment New koala Chlamydia vaccine project
Vets, vet nurses, University of the Sunshine Coast PhD students and a group of onlookers watched in anticipation when the newest koala Chlamydia vaccine was recently trialled at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. The vaccine is currently the newest and most advanced vaccine composition in existence and the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital hosted the world-first administration of the new version. It was the first full medical trial following a smaller test that took place in Lismore last year - building on efforts over the past seven years to develop a successful vaccine for koalas. Previous vaccine trials have focused on healthy koalas or animals with infection but no clinical disease, whereas this trial aims to vaccinate Photographer Ben Beadon, Australia koalas that already have Chlamydia Zoo and thereby halt, and even reverse, the effects of the disease. The chlamydial disease primarily affects koalas in three different ways; conjunctivitis which can become so severe that it causes blindness, inflammation of the bladder, and cystic reproductive tract disease in females causing infertility. Flann the koala was the patient who received the injection of the new vaccine; he will be the first of a study of 30 individuals in this groundbreaking trial. Flann was brought into the Wildlife Hospital after rescuers noticed symptoms of conjunctivitis in his left eye. Flann was the perfect candidate for the treatment as he suffers from mild grade 1 Chlamydia, making signs of improvement more detectable. Flann will be closely monitored for the next six weeks, with weekly swabs, blood work and photos being taken to assess the success of the vaccine. Once his conjunctivitis has cleared, and he is fit to return to the wild, his progress will be monitored.
Friends of Mary Cairncross Association School Holidays was fun for all!
with Sue Tanner As usual for this time of the year the rainforest, education centre, café and picnic areas have been extremely busy. Volunteers at the reception desk are often inundated with large family groups and visitors from all over the world. It’s always wonderful to see children so interested in the environment and so full of questions, showing photographs they have taken to be identified, or asking what bird sounds like a baby? (The answer to that is Green Catbird). Often children will tell us they have been to the forest on a school excursion and are now showing mum and dad. In the education centre, we have a display of reptiles and amphibians from the Queensland Museum and the University of the Sunshine Coast. This has proved very popular with visitors especially Dr Scott Burnett’s snakes in jars! The Friends are pleased to sponsor these special displays over these long school holidays. Also in the education centre we have artists’ impressions of the new buildings and a virtual tour of the new complex. This has raised lots of questions and comments from visitors, fortunately mostly favourable. We participated in the Australia Day celebrations at the show ground again this year. The whole day is an excellent opportunity for community groups to show what they do and get others involved - the breakfast is pretty good too! The Friends wish you all a happy and peaceful 2016. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. January is here and our Visitor Information Centres are in the thick of our busy season. The Glasshouse Mountains Information and Interpretive Centre has been exceedingly busy with around 250 visitors on New Year’s Day alone. Most were keen to walk the National parks and Ngungun, but with the re-opening of Mount Beerwah, we did get a few enquiries about getting to the top. I have included a photo of three of our Ambassadors, Peter Hyde, Carol Weeks and Maree Chappell at Mooloolaba Wharf ready to greet the cruise ship, Azamara Quest which arrived on Sunday, January 10. The Sunshine Coast will see a further nine cruise ships visit Mooloolaba throughout 2016. Once on shore, the passengers shop and eat locally, and many do tours that take them out to places of interest like the Glasshouse Mountains and Montville which is a growing market for our local businesses and exposure for return visitors. If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador at the Glasshouse Mountains Information and Interpretive Centre, you can call in and complete an application form, or give me a call on 0417 709 157. Library News by Caroline and staff at Maleny Library What’s on at Maleny Library? There are a range of eclectic activities and events happening at your local library – here are just a few. Trevor Irvine Exhibition - February 1 to 29. Trevor Irvine began his artistic pursuit following his retirement five years ago. He creates unique sculptures from local timbers, including boxes that showcase the beauty of the timbers as well as having a practical use. Trevor also creates realistic wildlife paintings using watercolours and acrylics. He is inspired by the colours found in nature and finds it a constant challenge to replicate these colours and settings. No bookings required. Beyond Colouring-in - February 26 at 10.00am. Join local artist and the creator of Beyond Colouring-in, Denise Lamby for a hands-on, inspirational experience. From individuals who believe they are not creative, right through to the accomplished artist, this workshop is for you. Each participant will walk away with a series of designs they have created and a partially completed drawing project to finish at home. Bookings are essential via council’s library website. Friends of the Library book sale - Bring a bag and grab a bargain on the first Saturday of the month from 9.00am to 11.30am. Did you know? You can bring in your library card and try out an iPad, Galaxy tablet or e-Reader, or borrow eBooks and eAudio books for the car. You can also download magazines, music and films to keep. Library Book Reviews The golden age by Joan London - This engrossing book which is the winner of the 2015 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Fiction is set in Perth and is about children with polio on the 1950s. Anyone who grew up during this period of Australian history will relate to this excellent novel. Takedown Twenty by Janet Evanovich (Audiobook read by Lorelei King). This was a perfect road trip audiobook and had us laughing out loud. Evanovich writes humorous murder mysteries and Lorelei King did a fantastic job of representing her main characters, Stephanie Plum and her sidekick Lula. In fact, she was one of the best narrators I’ve ever heard and we marvelled at how she could change voices for each character so convincingly. A light read (or listen) and a great way to while away the hours on a long road trip! For more details please visit www.libraries.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, call 5475 8989 or ask one of our friendly library staff. www.gcnews.com.au

‘Fitspiration’ photos can cause harm
Displaying images of super-fit females in the aim of promoting exercise to women could be doing more harm than good, according to research conducted by the University of the Sunshine Coast. The psychology study involved 322 women responding to either images of fit, toned models engaged in active pursuits or of thin models typically seen in fashion magazines.
Acupuncture
USC Lecturer in Psychology Dr Kate Mulgrew said participants who viewed images of very fit women recorded levels of dissatisfaction with their own bodies just as bad, or even worse, than the participants exposed to images of fashion models. Dr Mulgrew said these findings countered the common assumption that ‘fitspiration’ photographs would promote a healthier body image. “There’s a belief that fitness images create a better ideal to work towards, rather than just being thin,” she said. “However, we found the women who viewed the fitness models actually felt worse about themselves than did the women who viewed the traditional models. “Exercising and being fit are important things for women to work towards, but these fitness images should not automatically be seen as less harmful to body image.”

Dr Mulgrew said that despite fitness models being presented Dr Kate Mulgrew in contexts to do with health and exercise, their body type is one that is extremely difficult for an average woman to achieve. “It’s still only one body shape that’s being presented, not a range of shapes. The fitness image is still a slim, toned, attractive model,” she said. “Many women see it and think ‘well, I’m not that fit or flexible or toned’.” Dr Mulgrew’s research also assessed whether it was possible to shift the focus of participants away from just appearance to the functionality of the models’ bodies. “This study shows that women should value the body for more than just what it looks like,” she said. “Women should engage in a healthy lifestyle, but don’t take fitness models as another ideal to aspire to.”

Living - Arts Arts Council 2016 program greeted with enthusiasm An enthusiastic audience at the recent Launch on the Deck at Maleny Community Centre welcomed the 2016 program presented by Maleny Arts Council’s program coordinator Dr Peter Lavery. In launching the program, Dr Lavery gave praise to the renovations at the Centre and the opportunity to present a more professional program for an increasingly sophisticated audience on the Range. “We expect we will have some new lighting and that will create a much improved theatre space for our varied program this year,” he said. The MAC would begin the season in March with the John Coulton Brass Quintet featuring international trumpet soloist John Coulton presenting an outstanding afternoon of classical and contemporary music with four of the best brass players in Australia. Highlight of the year’s program will be the powerful and gripping play Motherland, weaving multiple stories of home, belonging, love and loss that span decades, continents and revolutions. The performance will be on Wednesday, May 4 at 7.00pm. “We are extremely fortunate to be able to secure this terrific play direct from the Queensland Theatre Company’s subscription series, " said Dr Lavery. Maleny audiences will be able to experience this moving piece of theatre at a lower seat cost and without having to travel to Brisbane. “Then for the first time audiences will be able to hear a dynamic 18 member chamber orchestra perform on the Community Centre stage. Camerata of St John is hailed as one of Brisbane’s ‘enduring musical delights’ and will be presented in August,” said Dr Lavery. Award winning actor Frank Ferrante, direct from an outstanding season in New York, will recreate
the legendary Groucho Marx in An Evening with Groucho…in the afternoon, in Maleny in early October. The two-act comedy show comprises the best Groucho one-liners and anecdotes. Finally, one of Maleny audience’s favourite artists Melissa Western, returns from performances in England with a brand new show The Roaring Twenties, reinventing a 1920’s speakeasy and reminiscing stars and composers like Josephine Baker, Greta Garbo, Louis Armstrong and Cole Porter. Melissa will be back in late October. President Professor Jennifer Radbourne said that all shows would conclude as usual with an invitation to meet the stars on the Deck, “and that does not happen at the big venues in the city,” she said. More information is available on the website www.malenyartscouncil.comand theatre goers should watch for further stories in Glasshouse Country & Maleny News.

Calling all artists – apply now for a RADF grant If you’re a local artist or work in creative arts, don’t forget that applications for Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Grants are always open. The RADF program is designed to support the development of emerging and professional artists and creative arts workers. Individuals and businesses can apply. Supporting artists and connecting communities Arts Connect Open Studio Weekend Four artists, Heather Gall, Wendy Edmond, Jane Nicol, and Kaye Leach are opening their studios over the weekend of January 30 and 31 from 10.00am – 4.00pm. A visit to these members’ studios is always interesting and inspiring. They are more than happy to chat about their careers and techniques, and their artworks are for sale. The January Maleny-Flaxton Art Trail is the perfect way to close the holiday period with delightful cafe’s and picnic areas along the drive between these studios. Heather Gall is a landscape painter on a quest to portray the intrinsic feelings and moods of the environment that she is in, absorbing the light, musicality and tempo of the moment. Working both prescriptively and intuitively, music and the natural world and environment are strong themes across her work. Heather has produced a large body of work throughout her career spanning over 30 years, with works in many private collections. She has also worked as a children’s book illustrator and designer with experience as a curator, gallery business owner, tutor in schools, with writers and art festivals. Heather opens her studio, overlooking the ancient Glasshouse Mountains, by appointment and during the Arts Connect Inc. Open Studios Program, near Maleny. Here she conducts her arts practice and a variety of workshops and classes. In particular, she facilitates Mindful Arts Experiences in collaboration with her colleague Janet Hamilton. You can also find a permanent display of her work at Peace of Green, at Maleny.

My job is to represent you, the people of Glass House, so if you have an issue you would like to see raised in Parliament make sure you send an email to glass.house@parliament.qld.gov. au. School’s Back
I know many parents are relived to wave their kids off to school at the start of a new year. I’m sure for no other reason than to watch them continue their educational journey! I hope to catch up with many of our local schools this year to talk to the kids about Government and life as a Member of Parliament. This is also a good opportunity to remind people to obey the 40km/ hr speed in school zones between the hours of 7.00am to 9.00am and 2.00pm to 4.00pm. These speed zones have been set this way for a clear reason - to protect the safety of our kids so please be sure to observe the speed limit when you are travelling in a school zone.

This week has seen a return of the nomadic Little Red Flying-foxes to the Sunshine Coast area. Little Reds travel from the northern and western areas of Queensland to feed on local flowering plants such as eucalypts, bloodwoods and myrtles. They are night time pollinators and this makes them essential to many of our local eucalypts, whose flowers only open at night. By pollinating eucalypts around Queensland the Flying-foxes are increasing koala habitat and keeping our native forests genetically healthy. The little critters generally only stay on the Sunshine Coast for a short time and should be returning to the maternity camps by late March. Council officers will be monitoring the Flying-fox visitors as part of the Environment Levy Program focused on protecting and enhancing the region’s valuable natural assets and wildlife.

“It is the best Cafe on the Range,” says Diana, “Julie and Mick are like family now. Julie’s cherry muffins are amazing!” Similar praise is given by the group of mums sitting out near the fully fenced playground. Classroom of the future
The Year 10 students from Glasshouse Christian College are creating their own futures via the College’s flagship program, ‘The DeLorean Project’. Brainchild of Dean of Studies, Mr Rob Steffler, says the DeLorean Project will prepare students for careers in the 21st century through innovation, collaboration and community mindedness. Globally, it has become apparent that traditional schooling models are no longer providing students with the skills they will need, for a future and careers, that are yet to be determined. At Glasshouse Christian College all Year 10 students will devote one day each week to: 1) discovering how to genuinely collaborate with others 2) determining where their passions lie and how to create something meaningful within that sphere 3) embrace change and innovation and 4) seek to genuinely and selflessly contribute to their community. All students will have autonomy to create projects that fit under this criteria, and will spend Terms 2, 3 and 4 preparing, implementing and evaluating their final projects. Throughout the year, students will also be involved in a ‘city curriculum’, which will give them the opportunity to develop their resilience, independence and collaborative skills, as they venture into Brisbane to explore, engage and investigate everything from the wonders of GOMA to catching a ferry and navigating the Queen Street Mall. Technology is cornerstone to this venture as students develop apps, begin start-ups, document the scope of the project and maintain a social media presence to inform the College community of all they have accomplished. On Wednesday, January 27, the first day of the new school year, the Year 10’s will finally get to see their new learning space and will spend all day collaborating and innovating. They will experience their first D-Day and begin the fantastic new journey courtesy of the DeLorean Project.

So on February 3 we will be turning cartwheels. If any of us can? See everyone soon!
WIN WIN WIN
It’s Back to School time, which can be a minefield of emotions for both parents and children alike. Dr Bob Jacobs, from the Parenting Centre has written a book that might help families navigate these and other challenges. ‘Perfect Parents, Perfect Children’ is about celebrating the inherent perfection in ourselves and in our children. Through personal stories of the families Dr Bob has worked with, this book demonstrates that we do not need to 'control' or 'tame' our children, and suggests ideas of how to eliminate powerstruggles and put the joy back into parenting. Thanks to Dr Bob, we have five copies of his book to give away to our readers. To win, be one of our Facebook likers on the Glasshouse Country News page, share the competition post and comment ‘shared’. Competition will be drawn 4.00pm Monday, February 1 and winners notified via Facebook. Prize must be collected from the GC&M News office.

Is a pink tongue a blue tongue in disguise? A reader asked if blue tongue lizards can have a pink tongue. The answer is no – but a pink tongue lizard can. Both species of large skinks are fairly common throughout the region, so it’s likely that you’ll come across them at some stage. The difference – apart from the strikingly different tongues – is that the pink tongue lizard has a tail which is longer than its body and is slender. The blue tongue lizard has a thicker tail which is shorter than its body. Another difference is that you’ll often find a pink tongue lizard living in your roof, as they are accomplished climbers. Both are good garden companions, as they eat snails, caterpillars, grasshoppers and other insects, but watch out in your strawberry patch as blue tongues love fruit as well. Female blue and pink tongue lizards retain their eggs inside them until they hatch, then they give birth to them as live young. Born in late January, by mid-February baby pink and blue tongues are just getting big enough to be spotted foraging for snails and spiders. But while older lizards get some protection from thick bony plates under their scales, young lizards have poorly developed armour which makes them vulnerable to attacks by cats and dogs. So, what can you do protect your resident pink and blue tongues? One of the biggest threats to blue-tongue lizards is the family pet, so keep a watchful eye on your dog or cat. The most important thing is be mindful of them when you’re backing out of the driveway, mowing the lawn or gardening. And avoid using snail baits where pink and blue tongues live. If you’re keen to create a garden to attract wildlife, leave rocks for shelter and plant low growing shrubs so that the lizards can move around safely. Being a ‘backyard buddy’ to pink and blue tongues doesn't involve a lot of work, but by doing a few simple things to make your local environment safe, you can help to ensure they are still around for our children and grand children to enjoy.

From the churches Fr Harry Reuss - Anglican Parish of Maleny The greetings ‘Merry Christmas’, ‘Happy New Year’ and ‘Have a good Australia Day’ are now over for another year. The work parties and family gatherings during the festive season were great occasions for relaxation and fellowship. The giving and receiving of Christmas gifts delighted the young as well as the old. Those who attended Christian worship services in the churches on the Range and beyond were greatly blessed as they sang their hearts out to ancient and modern hymns rejoicing in one Jesus of Nazareth, whose birth at Bethlehem was the ultimate reason for our present day Celebrations. In the Christian Church Calendar we move from the Christmas and Epiphany Seasons into the Lenten Season which commences with Ash Wednesday on February 10. Already Hot Cross buns have appeared in the shops. This year Easter Day is on March 27, one of the earliest dates for Easter. (I shall write again explaining why the date of Easter Sunday varies from year to year). Many folk would know the Country and Western Singer Slim Dusty. His famous song ‘Looking Forward, Looking Back’ helps me at least to look into the future, whilst acknowledging the past.

JANUARY 27 2016
The world in which we live is one of contrasts. There was a report last week by Oxfam which showed the great gap between the rich and the poor. Many people live lives of quiet desperation. Others are more vociferous about their trials and woes. Then there are those whose real or perceived hardships compel them to lash out in anger and violence. From simmering anger to domestic violence onto international terrorism there are unlimited examples of negative responses to disappointment and frustration with life. No one in this fallen and broken world is exempt from hardship, frustration, disillusionment and worry. Jesus said, ‘Do not worry about your life…..who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Your Father knows your needs….. Seek his Kingdom and all things will be given to you as well’. (Paraphrasing St Luke 12.22-31). Friends, as we look into the future could I encourage you to make yourself acquainted with the Jesus of Nazareth, born in Bethlehem, Crucified in Jerusalem, Risen from the Dead on Easter Day.

JANUARY 27 2016
Contributed by Sue Williams The slightly cooler conditions, on the beautiful Beerwah Golf Course last Thursday, made for a very pleasant day for the 54 ladies competing in the Single Par event. The day was very generously sponsored by lady golfer, Beth Butler. The Division 1 winner was Sue Greentree, on a count back from Helen Lewis, with a score of +1. Lyn Steele was once again in fine form, winning Division 2, with an excellent score of +5 and Liz Flavelle was runner up with +1. Pin shots went to Lesley Eggleston on the 2nd, Barb Whitfield on the 5th, Sonia Kenway on the 16th and Cathy Stone on the 18th hole. The ball rundown went to -2. Our raffle was won by Lea Doyle and Gloria White. Next week's event will be a Single Stroke. I would like to finish this report with some diet advice for golfers...live on the greens as much as possible.
Helen Lewis Division 1 runner up, Sue Greentree Div 1 winner, Lyn Steele Division 2 winner and Liz Flavelle Division 2 runner up

Just for Laughs Can count
Trouble
Teacher: "If I gave you two cats and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: "Seven." Teacher: "No, listen carefully... If I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: "Seven." Teacher: "Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples, and another two apples and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Six." Teacher: "Good. Now if I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Seven!" Teacher: "Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!" Johnny: "Because I've already got a freaking cat!"
Mr and Mrs Brown had two sons. One was named ‘Mind Your Own Business’ and the other was named ‘Trouble’. One day the two boys decided to play hide and seek. Trouble hid while Mind Your Own Business counted to 100. Mind Your Own Business began looking for his brother behind garbage cans and bushes. Then he started looking in and under cars until a police man approached him and asked, "what are you doing?" "Playing a game," the boy replied. "What is your name?" the officer questioned. "Mind Your Own Business." Furious the policeman inquired, "Are you looking for trouble?!" The boy replied, "Why, yes." Submitted by Sarah, Glass House
Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 27/01/2016
AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 There is a friendly, caring mood in the air, because of the Libra Moon. Generally speaking this produces very good cooperation and very little opposition to you, or to stand in your way. Quietly seething over some private news? However, you still help in someone’s transformation. PISCES February 20 – March 20 With Mercury now moving forward you have a better sense of where you stand with any friends, clients or plans involving them. Anything that has stalled recently will move forward and the planetary thrust of this planet is on your side of creativity. Go with the flow, life is easy! ARIES March 21 – April 20 It’s good to be up early this week, asking questions and digging for information. Try to see the best in people and navigate around awkward relations. Something profound, private, intense and dominating is said about some professional planned project. A cancelled appointment. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Generally speaking there are some pleasant days ahead for you! Some will require real drive and focus and you can make solid progress. Another day, over the weekend, key details may get lost, so safeguard important information by making a copy. The weekend has surprises in store!

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 It’s a ‘do it yourself’ week, or get somebody in to fix something before bigger problems escalate. Perhaps spending some dinner times with the family or next of kin could show that you have a caring nature for others. You may be annoyed over some banking matter needing attention. CANCER June 22 – July 22 You are running through a good mood period for the next few days, but make sure it does not incline you to overspend or overdo yourself physically. The weekend sees you putting domestic duties and obligations first. Follow a hunch about where to spend funds, re: investment now. LEO July 23 – August 22 Perhaps you and your partners are feeling excited about something over the next few days? We suggest you don’t overlook the finer details as you don’t want the dollar signs to run away in major expenses. The Moon brings to you easy going communication and caring companions. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 You have a strong desire to be of help, and this is commendable. Just don’t give too much of yourself if physical labour is involved. Your expectations are inflated, but no balloon is likely to burst as you have a sixth sense of understanding what the real results should be. Capture romance!
LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The Moon in your sign, by the end of the week, makes you want to have things your own way. That is very possible for at least a couple of nights, but at the weekend you may turn to eating too many sweets or chocolates for consolation. A decision comes up for a final review now. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Mercury has now commenced its direct motion, giving your communication skills a green light again! It also indicates that information, for which you have been waiting, is forthcoming. Working quietly behind the scenes may see you turn out some attention grabbing distractions. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 You still have the faith in various jobs you are doing, and the people you believe in. Stable support from a friend helps you manoeuvre through an awkward connection. A private pleasure awaits you for the weekend, however a feisty lover pushes your own urge to excessive gambling. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This week you should train yourself to be sensitive to what people at the top think about you. This is because they are sensitive about your image and they want you to dress appropriately, in your best management attire. Decisions made two weeks ago come up for a fresh review.
