I
n my job as Editor of Glasshouse Country & Maleny News it isn’t often that I get invited to a red carpet event, such as the Logies or a movie premier. However, I was fortunate to be offered the opportunity to attend the Pink Carpet event arrival of the celebrities attending Bindi’s birthday – Camping with the Stars. However I was already committed to a family function of my own, sadly while it was really nice, it wasn’t quite as glamourous as a Pink Carpet arrival! For me it was one of those middle aged moments when I realised just how quickly the years pass. And while the weekend might have marked Bindi’s 18 year milestone, I reckon she has often shown maturity and adult like behaviour for quite a while. So Bindi in case you are reading this – hope you kicked back and enjoyed yourself!

Local News Railway crossing closure plans continue As reported in GC&M News in early June, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have kick started the upgrade to the railway line with their ‘Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project’ (or B2N). The key quandary posed by the proposed plans is the closure of the level crossings at Barrs Road, Glass House Mountains and Caloundra Road, Landsborough. After a round of community consultation at Landsborough and Glass House Mountains, the project has moved into the next phase, according to a spokesperson from the B2N project Team. “The first round of engagement with the community on the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project (B2N Project) closed on 24 June 2016,” the spokesperson said.
“The project team is now developing the reference design, taking into consideration feedback from the community and technical investigations including transport modelling, environmental investigations, geotechnical studies and flood modelling. “The project team intends to hold further community information sessions later this year to present the reference design (including maps showing the preferred design and details of the options analysis process). “This reference design will be used to develop the Business Case which will identify project benefits, issues to be addressed, costs involved and the most appropriate way to achieve the desired outcomes,” they said. Subject to whether the government fund any works, feedback from these sessions later in the year will be used when creating the detailed design. According to the Project Team, the funding Business Case will be presented to government for an investment decision in 2017. More information can be found on the TMR website; go to www.tmr.qld.gov.au and search for ‘B2N’.

Greg Burnett, owner of Monty’s at Montville, recently had the kitchen in his Witta home transformed by Kev and his team. I have used Kev before for my shop fit-out at Monty’s of Montville so when it came to my own kitchen, I knew who I wanted to do the job. Kev is so easy to work with and comes up with brilliant ideas that I couldn’t think of myself. He uses only quality products but is happy to work with products you’ve sourced yourself into the design, then shows you everything in a 3D design. Not only can he get everything cheaper than anyone else could, but the installation process is so quick and clean, with no mess whatsoever at the end. I am happy to recommend him to everyone and will be using him again in my next investment project. Greg Burnett, Witta

Linda, along with four other recipients from the Sunshine Coast, was awarded an all-expenses paid non-academic bursary to attend this exciting world class literary event. Local readers may know Linda through her work coordinating the weekly Landsborough markets and as the owner of Beerwah Books and Bits. She is also currently in her final semester of a Bachelor of Creative Writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) as well as being involved in the inaugural Sunshine Coast International Readers Writers Festival which will be held in Coolum from September 9 - 11. As a result of her study, mentoring at USC and volunteer work in the lead up to the Sunshine Coast festival, Linda was granted the bursary at the local festival launch late last month. She joins four other recipients from around the Coast ranging in age from 19 to 66 to present at the International event. Linda said it was a complete surprise to be awarded the bursary. “I was absolutely blown away and totally gobsmacked when they announced it! The opportunity to meet other writers at an international level and represent USC and the Sunshine Coast International Readers Writers
Festival is an honour and a privilege,” she said. The Ubud festival was initially conceived as a healing project in response to the first Bali Bombing. Over the years it has grown to be a world class festival that has become Southeast Asia’s largest and most renowned cultural and literary event. The theme of this year’s festival, to be held from October 26-30, is the Hindu philosophical belief Tat Tvam Asi – or, ‘I am you, you are me’. Linda and the other recipients will be presenting individual papers that address this theme followed by a panel discussion. Linda is immensely grateful for the tools and support that being a mature aged student at USC have afforded her, and is looking forward to launching a new venture that combines her passion for creative writing with local genealogy. “Being at Uni has given me the opportunity to fulfil a long held dream and it has been life changing! I am passionate about books and writing and I am so fortunate to learn from the best at USC. Sometimes older people can feel limited but there really is a lot more out there if you are willing to seek it out.”

Process for motorcycle race decision explained Whether you agree or disagree with the proposition to hold a closed circuit motorcycle road race on roads through Maleny, Booroobin, Cedarton, Peachester, Bald Knob and back to Maleny, the proponent - Inside Line Events International – has the right to make a submission to Council.
“It is highly likely that for an applicant to satisfactorily respond to these criteria, they would have to engage with the local community (including residents and community groups) in advance.” Guided by the Sunshine Coast Major and Regional Events Strategy, the Sunshine Coast Events Board reviews the sponsorship application and makes a recommendation to Council. This process may take up to 10-12 weeks. The second process involves a ‘Temporary Event Public Land Application’. “Applicants must address criteria such as amplified noise, temporary road closures, traffic management, community safety and community consultation, among many others,” the spokesperson continued. “Input from key external stakeholders, including the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Police and other emergency service agencies, is also considered as part of the assessment process.” Considering the huge community interest the motorcycle event has created, GC&M News asked Council what input does the community have in the process? From the response, it appears that there is no formal process for community submissions as part of the major events application. “Community consultation is the responsibility of the event organiser and they must demonstrate to council in both application processes that this has been undertaken,” stated the Council spokesperson.
Event promoters are able to access sponsorship funded through the Sunshine Coast Council’s Tourism and Major Events Levy. The process is handled by the ‘Sunshine Coast Events Board’. But what does this process actually entail? GCN&M News asked Council to outline what happens when someone approaches them with an idea for a major event – such as the Sunshine Coast International Tourist Trophy (TT) International. At the time of going to print, it is understood that no formal application has been submitted to the Sunshine Coast Events Board for the Sunshine Coast TT. According to a Council spokesperson, there are two complementary application processes that an event organiser must follow when seeking financial support from Council for a major event. “Firstly, there is a Sunshine Coast Major Event Sponsorship Application,” said the spokesperson. “The event organiser is asked to demonstrate capacity to undertake the event and consider risk assessment, social benefits (including relations with local community groups), environmental impact and public/private use of land.

Ultimately, the decision goes to a Council meeting for the Councillors to vote on. However, as is the case with major event sponsorships, the decision is generally made in a closed session due to ‘commercial in confidence’ provisions, and so the public is not privy to the report or the discussions. More information on how major events are handled by Council can be found on their website – www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au – then search for ‘major and regional events’.

Busking at Beerwah
Dr Stephen P Daniels BDSc
Buskers and street artists are set to further liven up the Beerwah streetscape with the recent council approval of two new street performance locations. Following on from discussions with Sunshine Coast Council over a number of months, the organisers behind ‘Celebrate Beerwah’ are thrilled that additional spots along Simpson Street have now been officially allocated as approved busking locations. Tower Green Park (opposite Suncorp Bank) and 60 Simpson Street (in front of Neddy’s Nosebag) have been designated as suitable locations for street performance, ‘walk by acts’ or group acts (up to four persons). With the recent approval, permitted performers will now be able to engage with the local community seven days a week from 10.00am until 8.00pm. Young local buskers Emilie Rosenberg and Louise Munyard are excited about the opportunity to gain greater exposure for their work and welcome the chance hone their performance skills. Both artists play guitar and sing and they regularly perform at the Beerwah CWA monthly markets held in the Tower Green space. Emilie, a Year 12 student at Glasshouse Christian College plays percussion in the school orchestra and has been playing guitar for the last couple of years. She has been singing since she was in Year 2 and when busking performs a mix of 1980’s rock (Poison, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams) – the music she grew up with at home, along with more current artists such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. She is definitely keen to look into getting a permit. “I think it’s great and it gives young musicians like me a chance to perform to an audience

Emilie Rosenberg and Louise Munyard are excited about the new Beerwah busking locations and develop stage skills while also raising some money,” said Emilie. Former Glasshouse Christian College student who has now graduated, Louise Munyard is equally excited about the performance opportunities. “It will be really good to be able to set up a place to sing and get your music out to everyone. It’ll also be great to have the opportunity to play some original songs and see how audiences respond,” explained Louise. All street performers working within the Sunshine Coast region must hold a current permit issued by council which runs for an annual period from August 1 until July 31. Current fees for an adult are $78.00 and $36.00 for artists under the age of 18. After the initial fee is paid, annual renewals are $48.00 for adults and $16.00 for youths. Local filmmaker set to produce feature production By Sonia Clark Colin ‘Spida’ Dixon has spent the last 18 months on a project that has evolved from a short locally shot and produced film, into a full length feature production. With a working title of ‘Patched’, the feature film is essentially a story about belonging, family and the need to be heard. Set against a backdrop of a rural community and the relationship between motorcycle gang members and the police, the film seeks to explore the back stories of the main characters which exposes both the similarities between characters, as well as the typical conflicts. The film reflects on the message that we are all equally human and ‘not to judge a book by its cover.’ The idea to make a film has been bubbling away within Colin for nearly 20 years – this is a man who has some insights about life and often entertaining stories to tell. His interest in working behind the scenes grew following a number of successful acting parts as a ‘character actor’ over the last few years. Late last year Colin released a trailer for his locally produced short film based around similar ideas. The trailer unleashed a huge groundswell of support for the project and drawing upon its popularity, it provided the basis that evolved into the idea to make a full length feature movie. Colin has spent a great deal of time developing the script and has already enlisted a cast of big name Australian actors including Angry Anderson, Andy McPhee, Tony Nixon and Steve Nation. To assist with script authenticity, Colin has sought script advice from an outlaw bike club

member and a federal police officer. “I believe so strongly in this project and the feedback has been awesome. I’ve now passed the stage of not being able to do this film as I’ve invested too much so far,” explained Colin. Colin has now become the Executive Producer of the project and plans are well on the way to commence shooting later this year. A working script is in place, lead roles and crew have been assigned and attached to the production and financial commitments such as post production costs have already been funded. Additional funding opportunities are currently being explored for this locally produced and shot film. If you are interested in being involved or in supporting this project please contact Spida Productions via social media by liking their Facebook page ‘Patched’. Interest for this production has been growing steadily and the feature will provide a boost for our local film industry and area.

Police Beat with Constable Susan Lowndes Scam Watch
There are so many ways that dishonest people use to try to get you to part with your money that it is literally hard to keep up with them. In Queensland alone in just one month (June 2016) almost $400,000 was lost on dating scams. Australia wide the figure is close to $2 million, in just one month, for one type of scam. Online shopping scams have taken a further $600,000 from Australians. The Australian Government Scam Watch website (www.scamwatch.gov.au) has information about the different types of scams, what to look out for and how they operate. It also has a reporting page if you think you have been scammed, or check www.acorn.gov.au for information on cybercrime and reporting. The new financial year is always a peak time for emails, phone calls and text messages alleging to be from the ATO. Usually these scams offer you some kind of tax refund in return for a donation to a certain (fake) charity or something similar. Never reply to one of these calls, emails or texts by following links or ringing supplied numbers. Confirm contact numbers for the ATO or any other organisation by trusted means such as a phone book or known web site. There is loads of very helpful information about protecting your identity and various tax scams on the ATO website at https://ato.gov.au/identitycrime

Blue Light
What will probably be our last Beerwah Blue Light for the year is on Friday, August 12 at Beerwah Community Hall near the Library. These events continue to be a popular, fun and safe environment for the school children to attend. There are a few reasons why there may not be another Blue Light in Beerwah until next year and one of them is because of another bigger event for school children and parents planned at Aussie World at the start of October. Watch this space, I’ll have more details for you next month.

Roys Road depot takes shape
With the roadworks now completed on Roys Road, Beerwah you may be wondering what all the activity is for around the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade building. The Sunshine Coast Council has started to develop their new works depot which will replace the existing depot at Landsborough. The land was purchased from Queensland State Forestry in the 2012/13 financial year, with $1.24 million allocated in this year’s budget for construction works. According to Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, Work at the Beerwah Depot is now well underway. “Council’s Civil Asset Management (CAM) crew has completed construction of the wash-down bay. Another CAM crew is currently undertaking stormwater work. Once this is completed, a CAM team will move on-site to start the road works,” explained Cr Baberowski. “The contract to construct the Parks Shed has been awarded to local company, Superior Garages and the contract to construct the amenities building has been awarded to another local company, Delaney Constructions who are currently building the structure off-site and expect to deliver it late August for placement.” A tender process has just closed for the reconstruction of two of the existing ex-Forestry buildings. This work will see the character buildings retained and refurbished to be used as large depot sheds (the Works Shed and the Bridge Shed). “Overall work is progressing well with the structures sited cleverly within the depot, they will add to the amenity and experience of staff and visitors once completed,” Cr Baberowski continued. “The schedule is to have the depot operational late October 2016, weather permitting.”

Connecting neighbours through events
By Sonia Clark Last week we ran a story about a local neighbourhood concert that was held on private property in Diamond Valley. The concert was a definite highlight for the local community and served to provide an incredible night out with awesome live music that also allowed local residents the opportunity to connect with each other in a beautiful bush setting. We thought we’d chat to the event coordinator Natasha Odgers and get some tips about what’s involved in creating a local event that encourages a connected community. The event was paid for by tickets sold to adult guests at the entry and registered with the local Police. An amount of $15.00 per ticket had been budgeted to cover costs and pay bonuses to the musicians. For future events to adequately cover costs (i.e. lighting/PA hire, additional toilets etc, and musician’s bonuses) we would put ticket sales at $20.00,” said Natasha. The idea to hold a ‘forest concert’ followed on from a local house concert held about a year ago in Diamond Valley that featured one of the acts on the night - The Chontia Robinson Trio. That night was an enjoyable evening of live local music and organisers were keen to create another event that would get locals together. For people looking at putting together a smaller scale event - that could be easily replicated by having a $10.00 - $20.00 cover charge to pay for basic costs and have around 50-100 people attending,” explained Natasha. In organising the ‘Diamond Valley Forest Concert’, Natasha was fortunate to personally know the band members - who were thrilled to perform in such a unique and vibrant setting. The lighting rig and audio were supplied by Wombat Tracks and Didgeridoo player Mark Atkins came onboard through mutual friendships with one of the performing bands. If you have a story about bringing your neighbours together – either on a small or larger scale, please send it into GC&M News to share with the community.

Maleny Golf Club welcomes lease expansion The Maleny Golf Club (MGC) welcomes the Sunshine Coast Council’s (SCC) decision last Thursday to approve the lease of additional land for construction of Stage 2 of the Council’s 18hole community golf course. MGC President Dr Max Whitten said the lease would accommodate Golf Course Architect Graham Papworth’s original 18-hole design contained in the Precinct Master Plan approved by the SCC in June 2010, and the Club’s Business Case. “Council will now consider the Club’s Business Case during the second round of 2016-17 Budget reviews to assist with construction of the second 9-holes in three phases,” Dr Whitten said. “The proposed extension of the Golf Course lease until 2046 is also welcomed as this provides the certainty of tenure we require to secure finance, including grant funding, to complete the course,

construct our maintenance facility and eventually establish a permanent club house.” The Maleny Golf Course is now a valuable SCC recreational and tourism asset worth an estimated $3.5 million following Council's $450,000 investment to help fund the initial 9-hole development. Dr Whitten said MGC would now work closely with the SCC to finalise the boundaries and register the lease to enable planning for the phased delivery of additional 9-holes to get underway. “Construction of the next three holes in the former Unity Water effluent disposal area will then get underway with the intention of having these holes in play by early 2018,” Dr Whitten said.

Cubs head to a night at the zoo Cub Scouts in Australia are looking forward to celebrating their centenary on July 30 with a National Campfire. With all Cub Scouts being invited to participate in a campfire and cook food, sing songs, act skits or a combination of those and as part of the significant event, they will also reaffirm their promise at the same time. Cub Scouts from across Queensland are excited about joining with their fellow cubs and meeting
up at Australia Zoo for the big event. For our Landsborough Cubs the event is almost in their ‘backyard’ however they are really excited to be going to the ‘Camp Out’ at Australia Zoo, where they will spend the day at the Zoo participating in an awesome scavenger hunt and watching the Jungle Book in the Crocoseum. We hope to share some of their views on the unique experience next week.

New hearing clinic for Beerwah As there has been an increase in demand for hearing services, ihear have decided to open a permanent clinic in Beerwah. ihear Audiologist Shevawn Becker works to transform lives by providing better hearing to the Beerwah community. “We provide services to look after the hearing needs of a wide range of locals including pension and DVA card holders, retirees, workers and children, making better hearing more convenient and accessible than ever,” says Shevawn. Hearing loss is far more prevalent in the community than most people realise, with recent studies showing one in six Australians have a treatable hearing loss, but what may surprise many, is that nearly 50% of these are under retirement age. “As the world gets louder, the age of those with hearing loss gets younger. The effect of noise exposure means we are increasingly seeing
people in their 40’s and 50’s coming to us with a hearing problem,” says Shevawn. ihear range of hearing services include complimentary hearing screening, trials of the latest hearing aids as well as free* hearing aids and services for Pensioners and Veterans. They also offer hearing aid repairs and batteries, noise protection, diagnostic Hearing Assessments pediatric Hearing Tests (over three years of age). The new ihear hearing clinic located at Shop 3, 74 Simpson Street, Beerwah is open five days a week with convenient parking and wheelchair access. For more information or to book a Free Hearing Screening, call ihear on 5494 6985. * On behalf of the OHS
Happy New Financial Year, to one and all. Here’s to a prosperous 2016-2017 FY that continues to see our community benefit not only in business, but socially, creatively and environmentally. Thanks to Jillian Exton from Chemical Free Communities for an interesting if not terrifying discussion at our July Networking Breakfast, about the chemical soup that we find ourselves living in, in our modern age. The Chemical Free Communities website http:// www.chemfreecom.com/ is a great tool for researching the products that we use and take for granted in both the home and workplace, and provides information on those products that may be hazardous for your health and those considered to be safe. Thanks also to our hosts Chris and Jodi for the great venue that is Pomodoras on Obi. Parking in Maleny continues to be an issue. As our town and tourist numbers grow it becomes increasingly difficult to find a parking spot right in-front of the shop you’d like to get to. However, Maleny Commerce is working with shop owners to reduce staff parking on the main street and with Sunshine Coast Council to increase parking areas and provide parking information to the general public to reduce the pressure on Maple Street. In addition, I would encourage residents of Maleny to assist in reducing our need for more parking spots by carpooling, walking, cycling, hand gliding (just checking you're reading!) with all the associated benefits this brings to our environment and health. Our next Networking Breakfast is on Tuesday, August 9 at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, with presentations from some of our great local community groups, join us for a great opportunity to catch up and network with Maleny business and community representatives. Keep up the good business and enjoy the New Financial Year.

Eagle Boys Beerwah going strong
The Australian head of Eagle Boys franchisor was placed into voluntary administration a fortnight ago, but for Eagle Boys franchise stores across Australia, it is business as usual. Eagle Boys Beerwah franchisee Graham Fraser said they are continuing to trade as per normal. "We would like to let the community know we are still going strong,” Mr Fraser said. "We are grateful to the community for getting behind us and we will charge on, providing high quality pizzas at great prices." Administrator’s SV Partners has assumed control of Eagle Boys’ Head Office’s day-to-day operations, with a focus on maintaining business as usual and continuing with negotiations for the sale of the business.

Library News by Caroline and staff at Maleny Library What’s happening at Maleny Library? Book clubs at your local Library Book clubs are a great way to read and review books and meet up with friends. They inspire great conversations and let’s face it, some books need to be discussed. You can start a book club through Sunshine Coast Libraries with just two people and let it grow from there. The ideal size of a book club is eight people – it’s a good number for a great conversation and a variety of opinions. Plus, Library Book Club sets contain eight copies of the same title, you’ll just need one person to register and coordinate the group. Maleny Library currently has 17 active book clubs who borrow book club sets and meet regularly in Maleny and surrounds. Several of the book clubs have been established for many years but new clubs are being formed on a regular basis. Members report that book club’s meetings are a social as well as literary event, and are a wonderful way to get to know other like-minded people in the community. By joining a book club, you may be inspired to read titles you would not ordinarily choose. Members report it is interesting hearing others perspectives on titles which may be quite different from their own. Book club titles include classics, award-winning books and recommended reads – titles from all genres have been especially selected to inspire discussion. Book clubs are also encouraged to recommend titles for purchase. Sunshine Coast Libraries holds three big book club events each year for people to come and network with other book lovers. Most recently authors Frances Whiting and Mary Lou Stephens reviewed Hannah Kent’s bestselling book ‘Burial Rites’ at Maroochydore Library. Lively discussion was enjoyed by around 80 attendees. Register your book club by visiting your local Library Branch. It costs $100.00 per club every calendar year and those funds are directed back into the book club collection. There are hundreds of titles to choose from. Book clubs foster the love and value of reading. Find out more about Sunshine Coast Libraries book clubs on our website or at your local Library. library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Updates
Setback for Mooloolah Community Centre
The State Government have denied the Mooloolah Community Centre’s pleas for help to issue a long-term lease of 50-99 years or donate the freehold title of the premises, Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has said. The move comes after more than 2000 people signed a petition backing the Mooloolah Community Centre’s pleas for help from the State Government. “This is a disappointing result for the centre but we are determined to work together to get a result that helps the people of Mooloolah,” Mr McArdle said. “Unfortunately they are stuck in limbo for at least another nine years in terms of applying for grants to do capital works on the property or improving their kitchen facilities and extending the building. “However this is just one setback and the battle is far from over,” he said. The Mooloolah Community Centre currently operates the premises, owned by Education Queensland, on a short-term lease that’s due to expire in 2025. Education Minister Kate Jones has stated the lease will be reviewed then with the option of an extra 10 years’ extension to the lease to 2035. She has also encouraged the centre to contact the government to discuss the option of purchasing the land in the meantime. The centre offers a variety of dedicated initiatives including emergency relief, counselling, Justice of the Peace services, a monthly community barbecue, mini-markets, community garden, room hire and arguably one of the best op-shops on the Sunshine Coast.

Embracia in Woodford Aged Care at its Best
We provide excellent, quality aged care for all levels of care, including both emergency and planned respite care & specialised dementia care.
Twelve months ago, I needed to find a full time nursing care facility for my 92-year-old mother. This was made more difficult, as she was to move from Sydney, leaving all she had ever known, to be able to go into care closer to me on the Sunshine Coast. My decision to move mum into Embracia, Woodford was easily made, having visited numerous other nursing homes in the Hinterland and Sunshine Coast area. The transition for mum to Embracia has been a seamless one for her and truly a joy for me as her daughter. We were able to create a beautiful room for her, a new home for a new beginning. Her added delight is her balcony overlooking trees and with country vistas. The general staff at Embracia and the very high standards of nursing staff have been outstanding to mum in every aspect of their support for her as well as her everyday care needs. The staff meets the needs of each individual resident with care, understanding, empathy, and friendship. All with the aim to help residents feel that they are in fact in their own home and not just a care facility. Residents can participate together in a variety of organised activities within the home and yet Embracia presents daily, as a calm, efficient and peaceful environment for the residents allowing mum to enjoy her daily reading and quieter activities. The day bus trips are always enjoyed. Embracia has given mum the dignity and respect she truly deserves. Now at 93, when I bring mum back from a day out, I open the door to her room and she quietly always says, “I’m home.”
Marilyn K, Maleny
Come in to see the Embracia difference – the comfort of home, with a little extra luxury and the quality care you need.

Living - History A glimpse into Olga Nothling's life In the lead up to Wittafest, the organising committee will be sharing a number of stories of local families and the role they have played in the community of Witta's history. This week we take a glimpse into the background of Olga Nothling - a local Witta Treasure. Olga Nothling was was born in Witta in 1924 in a home called Pineview on Curramore Road, built by her father Bernhardt (known locally as Uncle Ben) and his wife Ida (Holzheimer). Pineview was the hub of the community at the time, being the Witta Post and Telegraph Office. People came there to collect parcels or shopping which was ordered from Maleny, then delivered by the horse-drawn cream cart, which took the cream from the dairies in Witta to the Maleny Butter Factory in Coral Street. The piano at Pineview became the centre of entertainment and had a long family history. Olga’s father Ben played the organ at the Witta Lutheran church (and played there for over 60 years), but at home he hosted popular musical t get-togethers around the family piano. hard Bern and Ida Christmas time was a highlight for the local community, singing carols and exchanging presents on Christmas Eve as was tradition. The piano had made the long journey to Australia as the treasured possession of Julius Nothling, Olga’s grandfather. He arrived from Germany in 1879 on the ship ‘Runnymede’ from London to Brisbane, with his wife Emilie and five children, with Olga’s father Ben being the youngest at three-years-of-age. The family settled in Beenleigh, alongside other European families from Poland and Germany. Julius was a brick maker and cattle farmer, he registered his cattle brand in 1882. In 1886 his bricks won 1st prize at The London Exhibition which was an ‘Imperial Showcase of Colonial Endeavour’ and commercial opportunity, a major achievement. In 1887 Olga’s uncle Carl Martin Nothling settled on 160 acres on what is now Oehmichen Lane in Witta. He was an enormously strong man who, Olga remembers, could carry 200 pounds of flour and 70 pounds of sugar over half a mile! Carl Martin was a founding Director of the Maleny Co-op Butter Factory and a councillor in Landsborough Shire. Julius Nothling Martin (as he was known as his brother also had the name Carl) married Mary Tesch and had eight children, and one son Otto Nothling became well known as he played both Rugby Union and Cricket for Australia. He was known for once being picked for an overseas tour, leaving Don Bradman behind. The family piano made another difficult journey, this time up the hill to Witta when grandfather Julius’ wife died. It took its place in the family home at Pineview where it became a treasure in Olga’s life, as it still does today, in her home in the outskirts of Maleny. Wittafest is grateful to Olga and her family for providing information that will be available on Saturday, September 17 at the Witta Sports and Recreation Club. To find out more check out the website page www.wittafest.com
25 Years of Mary MacKillop in Beerwah In 1987 land was purchased on Peachester Road by the Catholic Church which was to become the current Mary MacKillop Centre in 1989. The site was cleared by Nev Grigor from Peachester and a number of working bees were organised to rake, clear and seed the grounds. By 1991 the long awaited construction began, Les Shuttlewood, who did nearly all the building work for the parish, was contracted for the job. Plans were drawn up by Michael Jeremy, a local parishioner and draftsman. The final cost was $162,947 which included the widening of Peachester Road, and the entry road.
The first Mass was celebrated in May, 1991. The parish council named the building ‘The Mary MacKillop Community Centre’. Since February 1993 the Anglican community have shared the use of the Mary MacKillop Centre and in 1997 they provided, for the use of both communities, the annexe building. This has been a wonderful facility for both communities. In 2010 the space between the centre and the annexe was cleared, a Transportable Shade Shed was installed and the area paved, to create a multi-use all weather space. Until 2015 the maintenance and oversight of the centre was managed by a joint Catholic Anglican committee, this committee worked efficiently and harmoniously in a manner that was a credit to all concerned. The ecumenical partnership in Beerwah between the Catholic an Anglican communities developed friendships and a close working relationship. The regular joint services over many years was a demonstration of Christianity in action. It goes without saying that these 25 years of successful ecumenical church services would not have happened without the unselfish efforts of many people. I am hesitant to mention particular names, but there are some because of their dedication that should be mentioned. Fr John Dobson comes to mind first because without his vision, drive and planning the Mary MacKillop Centre would not have happened. The sisters who nurtured our community over the years were Mary Jo Mulligan, Mary Kate Chambers, Eileen Doyle, Kari Hatherell, Mary Carroll and Nancy Doyle. The priests include Pat Molony, John Manthey, Luke Reed, John Dwyer, Dennis Power, Seamus McMahon, Stan Griffiths, Brian Taylor, Bryan Roe and Kevin Smith. The community was built on the faith and commitment of many young families engaged in youth group activities, pastoral council, maintenance teams and the many working bees that built this strong faith community. Now the fresh faces of youth have changed to silver tops, with glasses and a few extra wrinkles, not unlike many other faith groups, however Beerwah is still working and celebrating together. Community members Graham and Barbara Leach, Graham Nicholson, Bob and Margaret McLean, Don and Joan Young, Gary and Kathy Pike, Leo and Joyce Crowe, Les and Pat Husson, Pam Lever, Terry and Margaret Scholes, Jo and Bev Appelman, Frank and Carol Gibson, Bill Bibo, Ron and Helen Blackman, etc., etc, and from the Anglican community Helen Page and John and Pam Innes. If you have been a part of this journey please join us in Beerwah at 10.30am on August 7 for a thanksgiving service, a catered lunch and a yarn. For catering purposes please RSVP to the Caloundra Catholic parish office by July 29 on 5491 2011 or email calndra@bne.catholic.net.au

School News NAIDOC week at Beerburrum
Contributed by Katrina De Clara Students at the school were recently entertained by award winning author Gregg Dreise. Gregg is a descendant of the Kamilaroi tribe, from south-west Queensland and north-west New South Wales and is very proud of his family and his culture. He has several picture books aimed at primary students and is also working on a chapter book for upper primary. For Gregg, the most exciting part of writing is going to schools and libraries with his didgeridoo and guitar, with the aim to educate and encourage children to be the best they can be. Gregg was very engaging with the students, sharing his beautifully illustrated books and incorporating some of his music with them too! The didgeridoo was a big hit and all the students agreed that Gregg’s stories were fantastic, with some really important messages. Gregg uses his books as a platform to inspire people to try their hardest; set realistic achievable goals; believe in yourself; and surround yourself with good friends who can inspire and encourage you to follow your dreams.
Mooloolah State School supports local family cause
At the end of term Mooloolah State school students and staff raised awareness and funds for the ‘Shine for Thomas Foundation’. The foundation was set up by Andrew and Trudy Olive, a local Mooloolah family, who sadly, lost their son in 2010 to Rhabdomyolysis - a life threatening condition that affects the muscle cells. They were hit with a double blow when they were told their daughter also carried the same double mutated gene LPIN1. The Foundations objective is to create awareness, arrange research and assistance to families. As a school community we came together and donated a gold coin to the cause and wore Tom’s favourite colours which were blue, red and yellow. We honoured Tom and the foundation on our parade. The money raised on the day was given to Trudy and Andrew Olive to go towards the wonderful work they do at the Foundation. Well done and thank you to all students for making it a very successful day to give money to a great cause, always digging deep for others in need, how proud we are. Information about Thomas’s condition can be found on the website shineforthomas.com.au
Landsborough Athletics Carnival
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School's Athletics Carnival was held on Friday, July 15 at Skippy Park. With cool conditions and showers of rain, conditions were certainly not ideal. However, the inclement weather did not deter students from approaching each event with enthusiasm and great competitive spirit. Students competed in sprint races, long jump, high jump, discus, and shot put, plus some novelty events. Teachers and staff were extremely proud of all the students who competed on the day as everyone had a go and achieved their best. Burgess House were the shield winners. In a close second place was Flinders and third place went to Petrie. Congratulations and good luck to those students who qualified for District Athletics, which will be held later this month. The school would also like to thank the volunteer parents who made the effort to assist with the various events and with canteen lunch support on the day. It was an outstanding and most enjoyable day.

Unhappy, responsible pet owners
My family and I moved to Glass House 18 months ago. We absolutely love our little town and have met some really friendly people. There is one rather noticeable downside though - the number of dogs escaping their yards or worse, dogs being walked but not attached to a lead. I don't understand why the owner carries the lead but doesn't have the dog attached to it. What's the point? I hope they realise they're breaking the law. We have two big dogs that get walked regularly on a lead. We also have a cat that I walk on a harness. The only other time he's outside, is when he's in an enclosure. Yes, Glass House now has a crazy cat lady. We are responsible with all our animals, so why am I and my poor cat constantly being attacked while walking, by dogs not on their leads? The dog spies a cat and runs for it leaving their owner way behind and unable to control their animal or be any help for me. Birds and other wildlife are safe from my cat so why can't we be safe in return? Please, all you dog owners who don't attach your dog's leads, you know who you are, think about the safety of other people and their animals. I almost lost my cat to a dog last year and I don't want to go through that again. Don't break the law - attach your dogs. Kaylene Anderson ‘The crazy cat lady’ Glass House Mountains
Solar farm concerns
I wrote recently of my concerns over our Council spending $60m on a solar farm for an apparent small return on our investment. Unfortunately, my concerns were further enhanced with an article in this week’s Weekend Australian. The South Australian Government are deeply concerned over their reliance on ‘Renewable Energy’. With help from the Federal Government they now have 40% of their energy coming from wind and solar. However this has proved to be unreliable and expensive. Large companies such as BHP Billiton have warned of shutdowns because of spiralling costs. A mothballed,
privately owned, gas fired power station at Port Adelaide was recently fired up to meet demand. The SA government is now demanding that they be connected to the more reliable and cheaper coal fired system of the Eastern States. There are concerns that the Federal Governments renewable energy targets will put other States in the same position and add to the already spiralling energy costs. Do we really need our council spending $60m on such a project when there is so much more that can be achieved with that sort of money? Derek Browning Glass House Mountains
We need each other
How often do we only hear about all the bad and negative things that are happening in our world and where we live? I want to encourage our community to start a wave of remembering we as humans need each other. And showing that to those around us. That is why I have attached a picture that I took of my son and I, under the sign at the local Uniting Church. What a beautiful message. Also I wanted to thank our local member Andrew Powell and the community members who took their own time to get the lights in at Glass House. Each morning I would sit at the intersection and pray God would help us get through safely (and Amen, we did), but it was a difficult intersection to get out of, especially as the traffic in the area has increased over the years. So please take a moment next time you go through our new lights at Glass House to be thankful, that we have them. My family certainly is, so a big thank you to everyone who helped get them there. NBN again ….
I have been a web designer for 19 years, 12 of those spent living in Glass House Mountains. Sixteen years ago I lived on the outskirts of Melbourne, and we had cable connection. When we moved to GHM we went all the way back to dial up modem connection … basically back to the stone age when it comes to digital connection. ADSL 2 copper wire connection is what we now have, I have spoken to NBN and to a Dodo (service provider) representative face to face.

I am shocked and disappointed that 11.36ha of old growth forest within the Beerwah State Forest is still being considered for clearing to accommodate a new Caloundra interchange. TMR appear to hide behind the EPBC Act standards/guidelines/offset requirements, the Overarching Environmental Management Plan, and their reasoning that 12.20 ha has already been removed from the Southern portion of the Project area, and an additional 11.36 ha within the Beerwah State Forest to justify the destruction of 5.37ha of Lowland Forest. This, plus the indirect impacting of 2.37ha (50m buffers) within the Mooloolah River National Park, Jowarra section, and the impacting of 29.8 ha of critical Koala habitat outside Beerwah State Forest. Planned remote offsets of 22.15 ha at the Lower Mooloolah River Environmental Reserve and an additional area of Koala habitat are no substitute for existing old growth trees and habitat onsite. Approximately 7.35 ha of the proposed offset area is mapped as remnant RE 12.3.1/12.3.5. I have witnessed far too much mature forest clearing recently on the Sunshine Coast to not be very concerned about this proposed project as is. The interchange must be moved further east to save ALL the old growth forest to the West of the highway. Still not good enough TMR, please try harder. Not one single old growth tree must be affected by this proposal. Mark Jones Doonan

I spoke to knowledgeable operators who were able to give me direct and as far as I can tell accurate information regarding the type of connection we in GHM can look forward to. How it was explained to me - telephone exchange to node, the node will be fed with fibre optic connection (from the exchange) the signal is then transferred to the Telstra pit via Fibre Optic cable and the connection to the house will utilise existing copper cable. (Nodes will be installed on a street by street basis). When I spoke to the representative at NBN they told me that the microwave towers only have the capacity to service 200 homes. The main drawback is that you must be in line of site to the mast, if you are not, the signal will be weak at best and as more people come on line, chances are your link will disappear. Even a sizeable tree will block the signal which is why the towers have to be in so prominent positions. Let’s just talk about when will we see this happen in GHM? According to NBN, the roll out will be mid 2017 for GHM and Dodo tell me that it was originally scheduled for mid this year, but has been put back for various reasons. I believe it’s the reduced service that the range dwellers should be worried about, not the odd conspicuous tower. An above ground power grid utilising 1000’s of steel pylons and telecommunications towers are everywhere and the television and radio broadcast towers that festoon Bald Knob are in abundance. Visitors to the area are used to seeing these technological aids all across the country, what makes the ranges so different to the rest of the country? What difference is one or more towers going to make? Bob Waldock Glass House Mountains

Own agenda
In response to the letters from Peaceful Roads Sunshine Coast, Cynthia Marie Smith and Michelle Deveze, in the July 13 edition, I feel there may not be any support from the council to intervene or to be sympathetic and understanding, towards those who moved into the area in search of a quiet, beautiful lifestyle with rural and natural value and artistic endeavours. Any negative impact on property values, unforseen at the time of purchase, doesn’t seem to be their concern either. When I purchased my property 19 years ago, for all the reasons consistent with this beautiful area, I didn’t anticipate that council would approve a ‘change of use’ of a property from rural/residential to a truck and heavy machinery depot, regardless of neighbours in the closest proximity and thus impacted the most, voting against it! This ‘change of use’ is permanent and not just an annual event, but five days a week from 6.30am to 6.00pm! There’s no monitoring of compliances by council, only if there’s a complaint. So from my personal experience, council has their own agenda and the whole process was certainly very questionable. I also feel something was approved, at other people’s expense! There seems to me, there can be parallels shown between my experience with the ‘change of use’ and the ones concerning those opposed to the TT Motorcycle Race event. So my advice to those opposing the TT is to be persistent regarding your rights and values. To rely on council to support your perspective is wishful thinking! Fran Davies, Witta

Living - Arts Vignettes at Vianta
Vignettes... A muted refrain from a song; a half remembered scent; the way the sunlight reflects off storm-wet leaves; the turn of a head. Clouded memories that elude and evade - and drown you in an overwhelming sense of nostalgia; or euphoria. 'Vignettes', a series of small mixed media works by Michele Deveze, grasp at diaphanous sensations, telling stories of barely remembered moments - a brief schisms in the fabric of time, or the seemingly eternal essence of an emotional epoch.
Michele says, "I like to make 'stories without words'... It doesn't matter if the story that I have told is not the same as the story that you read - what is important is 'the story', the fact that you read a story in the work, that you respond to it, and that it evokes the fleeting shadow of a vignette in your soul." Michele uses fragments and layering to evoke the uncertainty and obscurity of recollections that trigger vignettes. The technique gives a richness of texture and colour modulation that adds subtle nuances to the viewer's subliminal response to the works. The layered compression and abstraction of space allows conceptual manipulation to suggest the building of memories, experiences and images. The works deal with the perceived and sensual, rather than observed and conceived subject matter; they evoke sensations, feelings, emotions, and responses by the use and juxtaposition of texture, form, shape, image, line, tone and colour. They are titled after vices and virtues, adding a further dimension to their interpretation. Whether or not the source event was contrived by the character trait it is

45 Years Maleny Film Society screens ‘45 Years’ July 30 at 7.15pm with dinner from 6.00pm catered by Wild Rocket at the Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street. 45 Years is a British film directed by Andrew Haigh and based on the short story, ‘In Another Country’, by David Constantine. The film unfolds over the week leading up to the 45th anniversary celebrations of Geoff and Kate Mercer (Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling), a retired couple living in the Norfolk Broads. Their peaceful life is transformed forever when Geoff receives a letter informing him that the body of his former girlfriend has been found 50 years after she slipped into an icy crevasse on a Swiss hiking holiday. Geoff becomes unsettled and memories come flooding back – memories he is still unable to share with Kate who is beginning to realise that she doesn’t really know the man she has loved for almost half a century. The program includes a short film from the Gympie Heart of Gold Festival called ‘Florence Has Left the Building’. Members of MFS may purchase their ticket online or via the Maleny Information Centre. This financial year the Sunshine Coast Council increased the Environment Levy from $60.00 to $70.00 per property, raising $9.28 million – up from $7.73 million in 2015/16. At last week’s Council meeting, approval was given to how that funding pie would be carved up. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the Environment Levy was a primary funding source that allowed council to invest in the protection, enhancement and sustainable use of the region’s biodiversity, waterways and coastal foreshores. “The purchase of environmentally-significant land will see the highest funding increase from this year’s program from $1.35 million to $2.67 million – enabling council to add to the 2,800 hectares of land already purchased for conservation purposes,” said Cr McKay. “The community plays an integral role in protecting and enhancing the environment so we will continue to work closely with them through our grants and partnerships programs with funding increased by $75,000 to $920,000. “The levy will also go towards protecting our beaches and dunal foreshores – a big part of many Sunshine Coast residents’ way of life – with $775,000 to be invested, an increase of $155,000 from last year. “Researching flying foxes to inform effective conservation approaches and educating the community about these unpredictable wild animals also remains a core feature in the year ahead, with funding increasing by $25,000 to $80,000. “Council’s focus on protecting and enhancing our environment will benefit both our current residents as well as many generations to come.” Funding for other local initiatives include: • Koala conservation and management - $60,000, to support on ground research • Road reserve management – $80,000, for on ground action to manage woody weeds in road reserves adjacent to environment reserves • Mary River Rehabilitation - $349,000, actions to implement the Mary River Threatened Species Community Recovery Plans • Flying fox management - $262,000, actions to manage impacts of flying fox colonies • Pest action and engagement – $120,000, to promote pest awareness • Healthy Waterways Partnership contribution - $115,000, to contribute to the Healthy waterways Network • Sunshine Coast Kids in Action Conference - $60,000, to put on a conference and workshop series for school children • Fauna Monitoring – $85,000, for fauna monitoring at 10 high value conservation reserves
Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Motor bikes and quiet animals
with Sue Tanner It was a very small group of Friends that gathered in the wet and cold last Saturday at the Community Centre. There was considerable discussion of the motor cycle outrage proposed for December next year. Many of the members will be badly affected as the race route goes by their front doors, most will be affected by not being able to access the town but importantly the route goes by, what will by then be, our beautiful new café and Discovery Centre which visitors will not be able to access for at least four days. Also, what of our birds and quiet nocturnal animals? We unanimously agreed this was not an event suited in any way to Maleny and surrounds and encourage everyone to contact local councilors and express their horror. On a more positive note, the building work is continuing apace and slightly ahead of schedule. The exciting concepts for the interior design are now being finalised. Michael Gilles (Senior Environmental Visitor Centre Officer) gave the meeting a very detailed presentation around the Dusk to Dawn section of the new Discovery Centre designed by Focus Productions. This is a unique feature of the building. Visitors will enter, through a maze of large trees and buttress roots, into a nocturnal environment. They will experience the changes in the forest from sunset to sunrise with subtle lighting changes, sound effects, nocturnal animals and birds moving around, luminous fungi and the odd giant worm. The Friends are very pleased to be able to make a substantial financial contribution to this exhibit. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. For years I have loved reading ‘glossie home magazines’, and I particularly loved all of the projects where they featured the before and after photos. Finally, after living in our home for nearly 14 years, we found the time to do a major renovation and as we got started, I felt like a contestant on ‘one of those reality home reno shows’. I thought it was so clear in my mind what I wanted – boy was I wrong, there were so many decisions to make, and so many things I hadn’t considered that I began to wonder if we had bitten off more than we could chew! One weekend the painter dropped in and I was sitting at the table surrounded by paint charts – who knew there was so many different whites? And I think the painter could see I was getting a bit unhinged. He said to me, he had a sample in the car that he thought would work well and he proceeded to do sample spots throughout the house, choosing spots with different lighting etc. The weight was lifted off my shoulders. It looked perfect and was just the effect that I was hoping for. Once I had said yes that is great, he smiled and said it’s a shade we call builders white! Another day I was speaking to the electrician, he wanted to know where I wanted a particular light switch and I really wasn’t sure. I asked him what he thought and he politely told me that it was my choice. So I decided to rephrase the question and said if it was your house where would you put it and he quickly said well on this corner - this is a light you would turn off on your way out of the room at night so here. Well so much for my extensive knowledge of home decoration gleaned over many, many hours of pouring over magazines. My hot tip is to speak to the professionals and try not to choose things based just on how they look! Regards,

Thinking about renovating? Now is a great time to think ahead about preparing for the upcoming Christmas and summer season. This is traditionally a busy time of year with entertaining and family-time often a priority, and so now is the time to plan those projects and have your property prepared so you can relax and enjoy your time off with friends and family without last minute hassles. Here at Jaz Build, we encourage our clients to consider any preparation and potential renovation decisions before Christmas. Typically, people will call with last minute requests that are impossible to complete in time, but by planning and booking ahead, these jobs can be easily completed to let you enjoy the silly season. People should also be prepared for summer. Leaking structures should be repaired before the rain season – as water damage can be serious. Check your roof, gutters, fascias and other areas that need repairs.
In our region, white ants are also a major concern, so either check your property yourself thoroughly or give John at Glasshouse Country Pest Control a call on 0407 439 526. Christmas is often an expensive time of year. Jaz Build has found that clients are enjoying the great benefits of investing in their own property, and creating a perfect entertaining space. A new bar, deck or outdoor entertainment area will bring the party to you and save money in the long term. Who doesn’t want to relax and take in the great surroundings we have in the Hinterland and Glasshouse Country region? Outdoor zones provide an extension of the family home and the opportunity to have some fun in a safe and comfortable environment. Popular additions currently include pizza ovens, fire pits, pool decking and outdoor barbecues, as well as new patios to extend the family living area. Also popular are requests for extensions to provide
extra room for guests and / or more space for the family. We offer people design advice, that can include changing the feel of a dull room to lighten the space and revitalise your home. You can’t buy the views we have in city real estate – so make the most of this lucky country region and let us assist in helping you fully enjoy your living space.

Business feature Neil Goodall already owns a number of successful businesses. With over 30 years experience in the building industry, Neil is a well known character around the Port Douglas area. Neil currently runs a building company, earthmoving business and operates a number of commercial trucks, employing numerous staff. He recently added Transportable Shade Sheds to his business portfolio when he became a reseller in May. For resellers like Neil, Transportable Shade Sheds is an excellent Australian made product that offers a potential revenue stream that can be managed on his own terms around his existing businesses. Transportable Shade Sheds can provide a financial backup option for established business owners or alternatively the fully equipped trailer can provide a recognisable brand that provides a stepping stone to launch other business options. Neil’s businesses come under his ‘Didja Hire’ company name. The advantage of adding Transportable Shade Sheds is that it provides an alternative avenue of income potential that he can explore in the downtime between his other jobs. As resellers operate as their own boss and are not tied into franchise limitations, this option can be accessed as much or as little as the reseller chooses – they own the trailer so the opportunities they pursue are entirely at their discretion. Neil has identified a number of rural opportunities for selling Transportable Shade Sheds. In the hope of eventually getting one of his staff members to sustainably maintain that side of his business, Neil is looking to garner additional interest in the product by attending rural shows and exhibitions. Looking forward to attending local events with the product, Neil will be able to increase his public profile which will no doubt prove beneficial. Although only recently joining other small business owners throughout Australia in becoming a reseller, Neil has found that having the additional business has already opened doors and provided networks that have benefitted his existing businesses. “The sheds are just so easy to put up and they provide a good affordable option made out of proper steel. It’s a great product with a simple design that can be adjusted and adapted,” explained Neil. Becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller provides small business owners with an identifiable reputable product. The solid foundation is complimented by the access to additional opportunities that resellers can enjoy through the collaboration of Transportable Shade Sheds with the online marketing and mentoring platform Saver6.com which provides online promotion and digital presence across a range of digital platforms including eBay, gumtree and facebook. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Port Douglas and surrounding areas contact Neil via social media or on 0418 757 129. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss or look at a business option that may allow more time at home with your family then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 5405 3620.

Pristine Water Systems are the specialists in water management systems with more than 10 years of research and development. If you have a water problem, they have the solution! For more information, please visit www. pristinewater.com.au Introducing Simon Lacey With a wealth of previous experience in the heavy industrial sector as a trade qualified Fitter and Machinist, Simon thought it was time to move to an industry that would really benefit his community. Simon is Pristine Water Systems Australia's latest catch. He services Caloundra, and Glass House Mountains to Kilcoy, as well as the Mount Mee region. He really enjoys getting out in the area and meeting new clients – he loves a chat and is truly committed to his customers’ needs. He also appreciates the daily contact and support with the head office team to ensure the best solution for each client. Simon stresses the often over-looked importance of clean tank water. "Tank cleaning is hugely important, the stuff I have
Simon Lacey (left) and Allen Pitcher (right) pulled out of tanks you wouldn't believe,” he said. "Roofs pick up anything and when you're in country areas there's also dust, crop spraying and pesticides washed into tanks, then there's flying foxes, birds, rats, faeces – the list goes on. "It's not high on people's priority list but tank cleaning is a necessity and inexpensive. "People should probably be getting their tanks checked annually." To get in contact, please phone Simon on 0411 774 767. Introducing Allen Pitcher Allen has come from the commercial mining and gas industry, and also has extensive knowledge of both chemicals and cleaning. Allen made the change to Pristine Water Systems Australia on April Fool’s day this year and the only foolish thing he feels about the move is he wish he had made it years ago! Allen services Glenview and Landsborough, out to Maleny and the hinterland.
Wanting to spend time outside and be mobile, Allen has embraced the opportunity to spend more time closer to home as well. Through his own working experience and the extensive training and support offered by the Pristine Water Systems team, he enjoys offering his clients an individualised service to suit their exact requirements. “Each day I do the best I can to educate clients on how important using the best quality water is – don’t take chances with your family’s health,” he said. “Knowing how different chemicals can affect your body with daily use, I don’t like the thought of people poisoning themselves. Especially the young, elderly or immune suppressed. Correct filtration and water storage can really make a difference in all our lives.” To discuss what Allen can do to make your water the purest available, please call on 0404 302 723 today.

Lea Parkes - editor of Glasshouse Country & Maleny News When I watch those Reality television shows where a bunch of people come into your house, get rid of almost everything you own, and completely makeover your home, I always think, oh no they have taken away the memories and treasures that make the home unique! For me, while I definitely buy new decorator items for our home, I also enjoy having items that have been passed on to me by the people I love. Sometimes this means gifts from friends that they have chosen especially for me or other times it is keeping an item that is a little bit of someone, who is no longer around. In this ‘Home and Garden’ feature I thought I would choose a few items that I love and make me feel like I am ‘at home’ to share with you all. I am not sure what all these items say about me… some people might just call it a house with nothing that matches / co-ordinates but I like to refer to my overall design style as eclectic which is defined as - deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources. I look forward to sharing someone else’s treasures next time.

Will the risk of renovation pay off? Beerwah couple, Jessica and Peter Debenham are your regular mid-twenties students, but own a home that Peter secured with some capital from a career previous to studying. With a change in lifestyle needs, and with some spare change in their pockets, the two hesitantly decided to take the risk to renovate over their mid-year study break, with the view to try selling on their own. The big question now is whether the renovation has been worth the time and money for the sale which goes online this week. “It’s been a fun, but testing experience,” says Peter. “I think renovations are a sure way to challenge a relationship,” adds Jessica with a smile. “We know what we like, and we know what makes a home feel like a home to us - but knowing what that means to others is difficult,” Peter says. “We’ve sort of gone with a spend big - spend well, spend small - spend smart approach.” The couple explained that they wanted to do a few things really well, instead of a lot poorly. The property, which is situated in Beerwah’s well established and family orientated Woodgrove Estate, while structurally in top nick, its landscaping and interior finishes were looking a little tired and uninteresting. “The carpets were worn, and there was practically nothing going on in the garden,” she says. “The house seemed average, but we wanted it to be extraordinary - a factor that we hope will be reflected in the sale.”
The couple has mostly done everything on their own. Relatively inexpensive, but effective projects included painting the property’s rough-finish fence and water tank, resurfacing the driveway and garage, and even retiling the kitchen splashback with modern tiles. Jessica says that, for example, the kitchen tiles and grout came to $40.00, which they thought was money well spent considering it completely transformed the space. “These are the small changes we are hoping will add up and make the right impression on buyers. “We had a go at making homely landscaping features from recycled timber, such as the bold letterbox, backyard entertaining bench seating, and a handy herb wall-garden visible directly from the kitchen window. We’re really happy with how our raised beds turned out as well," she says. “We sanded the existing sleepers, stained them, capped them with hardwood screening, and mulched and replanted the beds with a few simple, but sophisticated plants. The backyard looks really smart now - a pleasant place to sit down and enjoy.” The couple did splash out, however, on two key installations that they felt were imperative to

rejuvenating the home’s presentation. “Andersens Caloundra came to our house, with carpet samples, gave professional and useful advice on popular colour and fibre choices, and offered a very competitive quote to us,” says Peter. “Our only reluctance was committing to the cost initially, however, after seeing the remarkable impact the new plush carpet has on the entire interior, we now feel confident that buyers will be just as impressed as we are. The difference is really astounding.” The other big spend was then naturally carpeting the front yard … turf! “We met a friendly local turf farmer in Beerwah' Mick from I Love Turf. He invited us to his farm and took us on a tour of his fields and turf varieties,” Peter says. Mick guided us to Aussie Blue a really lush, deep blue-green, medium-blade grass. It performs exceptionally well on the Sunny Coast, but most importantly suited our budget. He also explained the importance of plant nutrition, and supplied us with his Fertpro fertiliser, which was very important to us as we want the grass looking its absolute best for the sale this week.” The couple are eagerly awaiting to discover the market's reaction this week when the sale goes online. At $449,000, they will surely be getting a lot of interest.

So much fun to be had here
I have got to say this is one of the best 49 acre properties I have had for sale for a while. The undulating land with an excellent mountain views has a dam that supplies water for the property through a concrete water tank placed high on the property so the water will gravity feed. This property is set back from the main road for privacy and has two sheds plus the frame for a third. The three-bedroom home built
in the early 1950’s has separate lounge, dining and sun room, kitchen off the dining room area. The bathroom is renovated into a wet room and has a separate toilet. The owner will sell the property with all the furniture as a package deal, ideal for someone wanting a weekender. Family circumstances force this sale and they are keen to move forward with their plans. Contact David at Boxsells Real Estate for an appointment to view the property on 0427 718 194.

In the Garden with Brownie
Jobs for the yard in August
What’s on for gardeners in August
• It’s a good time to prune and fertilise hibiscus so they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer. • Don’t forget to water the veggie garden twice a week. Although it’s cooler, the winter winds will drain the moisture from the soil. • If you’re growing pineapples, give them a side dressing of complete fertiliser in late August. They like acid soils, so avoid using lime. • Spray your mango tree with a copper based spray to fight anthracnose disease. • It’s not too late to plant a bed of potatoes. Use seed potatoes to minimise the risk of disease problems. • Prune your scrappy looking geraniums and use the cuttings to strike new plants. • Plant your new roses now. Bagged and bare-rooted roses are in plentiful supply. • Fertilise your existing rose bushes by mulching around them with cow manure. Vegetables Plant carrot, lettuce, radish, beetroot, capsicum, celery, cucumber, eggplant, beans, potatoes, pumpkin, silverbeet, spring onion, tomato, zucchini, broccoli, asian vegetables, cabbage, peas, spinach, coriander, rocket and turnips. Flowers Plant marigold, bedding begonia, californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, dianthus, gerbera, kangaroo paw, nasturtium, portulaca, snapdragon, zinnia, cosmos, amaranthus, salvia, sunflower and statice.

Free event – learn all about gardening with native plants. • Faunawatch – August 10, 8.00am at Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens, Tanawha. Walk, survey wildlife, and learn about Faunawatch. Phone 0422 429 594 for details on how to get involved in Faunawatch. • Glasshouse Country Orchid Society – August 11, 7.30pm – it’s the AGM at the RSL Hall, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains. From the churches How do I find faith?
Jill Schefe - Glasshouse Country Lutheran Church
In Australia, and in the USA and in Canada, there are millions of people whose parents or grandparents emigrated from Europe many years ago. As the train or boat left on the first leg of the journey, many looked back and waved to a father or mother whom they might never see again. At that moment they had a sense of being utterly at the mercy of a strange, unknown future. They had chosen to go, had torn up their roots, and now it was too late to change their minds. They had to go and no stopping of the train or boat. Our relationship with God is something like that. From the very moment of our birth we are helplessly caught in the ‘train’ of our self-centered nature. More or less willfully, we go our own way and make our decisions alone. Even God gets left out. We are very much occupied with ourselves.

Even our outwardly fine acts and admirable goals are mixed together with self-seeking motives. St Paul once passed on a similar personal experience to the Christians in Rome: ‘I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.’ (Romans 7:21 NIV) We imagine that we are free to get rid of what is bad and wrong in us, but only discover how helpless and powerless we are to change our ways. We cannot on the basis of our own free will, find access to God. It has been said that people become Christians because they choose to do so. If a person comes to have faith in Christ, it is completely and totally the work of the Holy Spirit. Through God’s Word and Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, God’s call goes out through the Holy Spirit and He actually converts people. I don’t ‘invite Jesus into my heart’ I don’t solve all my doubts and questions first. Even before I begin to grasp what kind of person I really am, God’s call goes out to me and tells me that I am accepted.

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle will host a Community Safety and Storm Season Seminar at the CCSA Hall, 1 Nutley Street Caloundra, on Friday, August 26 from 9.30am. The Seminar will feature guest speakers including representatives from Energex and the SES informing people on how to ensure their home is storm ready and what to do in the event of a natural disaster emergency. “The Sunshine Coast is not immune from severe weather events and it’s important for local residents to get ready and protect their properties ahead of the summer storm season,” Mr McArdle said. “This is a great opportunity for people to come along and hear some important information so they don’t get stuck in a dangerous situation one day. “To date, Caloundra has not been hit by the worst of a storm but every day that passes the odds reduce of that occurring. “Complacency is not an excuse and the best way to deal with these events is to be prepared.” Topics to be discussed at the seminar include: • The role of the SES and Energex during a storm emergency • Preparing for disasters and emergencies • What to do in the event of an emergency • The SES on the Sunshine Coast

Sport Maleny to host Cross Country Championships Up to 300 runners aged from under eight to over 70 will converge on the picturesque Maleny Golf Club and Community Precinct on Saturday, July 30 for the Queensland Cross Country Championships over distances from 1km to 10km. Queensland Athletics Manager, Recreational Running Services and Programs, Benita Willis a four-time Olympian and World Cross Country Champion – said the undulating course reminded her of some tough circuits in Europe. “I really like the finish here because it’s up hill with a flat section at the end in front of lots of people which creates a fantastic atmosphere,” said Benita. “It’s also great for the spectators because they can see the whole course from one spot, whereas at a lot of cross country courses that I’ve seen you have to run from point to point.” The popular spectator-friendly Maleny course has been a feature of the Sunshine Coast Cross Country Series for the last few years, paving the way for Queensland Athletics to select it as the venue for the 2016 State Championships.
Runners aged 6 and up, of all abilities, are encouraged to compete; entries are taken online and close at midnight on Thursday, July 28 (go to: http://www.qldathletics.org.au/News/ queensland-cross-country-championships-3) Maleny Little Athletics will be there with a barbecue and refreshments, the Rotary Club will handle the parking – and for those who have a hankering for local history, heritage listed Pattemore House, next to the Maleny Golf Club, is also open to visitors from 1.00pm – 4.00pm. Maleny Golf Club President Dr Max Whitten said there would be a cost to the golf club because Saturday was the busiest day in the golfing week. “However, we are very keen to embrace such opportunities which broaden community access to this beautiful tract of open space,” Dr Whitten said. Racing starts at 1.00pm and visitors are more than welcome to book in and play a round before the course closes at 11.00am. For more information about Maleny Golf Club, the course and membership options visit the website: www.malenygolfclub.com.au
Witta tennis
Beerwah Ladies Golf
Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails enjoyed the day of tennis, but Maroochydore Sapphires proved too strong on the day. Thanks to Claire, Gerry, Janet and Sonia. The Wildcats were at home to Kawana Kingpins. Even being continuously buzzed by a helicopter didn’t deter the team of Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby bringing home the win. The final score was 7-1 sets, 47-24. The Whistlers played at Maroochydore against the Meteors. We had long rallies at every game. We couldn't get lots of winning shots but it was a long day and everyone had enough tennis by the end. Score was 23-42 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Brenda Warner, Maree Hooley, Aki Lepper and Donna Kuskopf. Witta Wompoos had a good win over a strong Ballinger Rockets team at Witta on Sunday. Witta won 8 of the 12 sets played with 4 going Ballinger's way. Paula had a blemish free day winning 4 sets from 4. Thanks so much to Brenda and Haydn for playing with us on the day. Congratulations also to Andrew, Anthony and Denis. Witta Wikings travelled to Gympie to play Fraser courtiers JB, Kevvy, Andy and Glenno – Pauline and Maree fought hard in the spring like conditions. Fraser were winners on the day – but close sets dominated the match. Great effort team! Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au. 42

Division 2 (28-45) winner was Diana Smith with 75 nett on a countback from Robyn Taylor who was runner up. NTPs were Karen Madsen on 2, Josie Thistlethwaite on 5 and Sharon Phillips on 16. Lea Garner's second shot on 18 in the hole gave her a win. Ball rundown went to 78. The ladies welcome visitors, new members and beginning players. Happy golfing.
Glasshouse Bowls Club
by David Hayes Tuesday, July 19 - Wendy Platt and Chris Freshwater competed in the Champions of Champions Pairs which was held at Solander Lakes. They put up a top fight to only go down 26-20 against the home team. Well done to both ladies. Wednesday, June 20 - Social Bowls. Lee Meyers, Brian Larkin and Doug Sweedman def Graham Condie, Noelle Dean and Mike Kernick 20-14. Graham Meyers, Viv James and Di Hume drew with Russell Walmsley, Marilyn Boulton and Ron Wilson 17 all. Lyn Griffiths and Allan Pashby def Chris Dougan and Joy Reason 24-15. Thursday, July 21 in a massive win, Bob Moss back from a three month holiday along with Max Viterale won the day, with 2 wins + a score of 54. Impressive! R/up for the day with a win and the highest score in the second game were Bob Bloomer and John Annakin with + 13. Round 4 Pennants second division played well, but found it a tough day at Bribie going down by 23 overall. Still in with a chance to win the comp though. Fifth division played away at Narangba, overall they got up by 4 shots. Perfect start to the season! Saturday, July 30 - from 9.00am we will be holding a meeting at Club Glasshouse to consider what Bowls Competitions we will be entering in for 2017. I strongly suggest you all turn up to voice your opinion. As of October 1 next year’s bowls memberships will be open to pay. This year the new fee will be $85.00. You have until the end of December to pay. On Sunday. August 7 - our club is hosting the next Police Bowls Day, the Iona Challenge. This day is sponsored by Terry and Liz Little and there will be up to $400.00 in prizes. I encourage all members to come along for a game. The cost is only $12.00 and includes hot nibbles after the game. Put your name on the sheet in our bowls shed office. Our Mixed Fours Spring Carnival will he held Saturday and Sunday, October 15 and 16. Nomination forms are available at our bowls office. The $55.00 per person includes green fees and lunch for both days. Should be a great weekend. There are six teams already down. Glasshouse will be hosting the Champions of Champions Men’s Fours on Sunday, July 31. Semi Finals to be played at 9.00am with the final played at 1.00pm. There will be No Sunday coaching on this date due to competition. All Bowlers, please be aware if you ever use the green for a roll up/practice, you need to go to the bar in Club Glasshouse and sign a book. This is so they know who is using the green as well as the staff may need to pass on information to you, e.g. If the green keeper has sprayed the green etc. This is a pretty normal practice at most clubs.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES The competition is mounting in the Super Strawberry stakes, with five entries in Round 4. Winner of the main category (heaviest strawberry) was John Allen’s Oaklands Farms with an entry weighing 150 grams – best weight so far this year. There was some excitement in the ‘most unusual’ category, with stewards declaring Greg Harvey’s entry the winner – as the photo shows, clearly Homer Simpson in profile! And it was decided to make honourable mention of Glasshouse Christian College agricultural students whose entry, on close inspection, resembled an alien face! A correction from last week’s report: the most unusual category in Round 3 was also won by Greg Harvey with a very cute parrot. Round 5 is now open, so growers and pickers, be vigilant – you may yet find the 2016 Super Strawberry! Bring entries to the Coochin Creek Co-op any time during the week, but make sure it is before the closing time of 4.00pm on Friday, July 29. Thanks to the Co-op staff and Beerwah Hotel for supporting the Super Strawberry again this year – all in a good cause as this novelty competition is run each year in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports, a major community fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland.

Nearest the Pin went to Paul Viertel on the 3rd and Paul Lowe on the 5th. The picturesque Maleny Golf Club is situated at 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny. The ambiance and natural environment of the course offers nine holes, each with its own challenge. The course provides an enjoyable golfing challenge for players of all standards. Visitors are most welcome. For more information visit the web site: www.malenygolfclub.com.au

Contributed by Ian Hansen Tuesday’s winners with two wins +18 were John Kapetanic and Ray Oldfield. The jackpot of $94.00 wasn’t won so will be in excess of $100.00 this week. Wednesday evening’s Twilight Challenge is still proving popular and the winning teams were:- Apps Kingdom, Mavericks, Bon Diggery, Handles, Ezi Riders and Bridge Club. The individual winners were;- Lead Trevor Dunn, Second Bruce Rankine and Skip Ben Fawns. The Touchers went to Lyn Hansen, Jane Burgess and Steve Porter. Friday’s Scroungers winners were Harold Hopper, David Burgess, visitor Eric Sallinger and Les Bennett. The only Sponsors’ Prize winner present was Ian Porter who won the Colin James Prize. The lucky Money Board winner was Harold Hopper. In the Club Championships, two Triples Matches and the semi-finals of the men’s Open Singles were played. The winners of these matches were Warwick Moody, Miles Allen and John Lewis over Jim King, Brett Gillis and David Austin and in the second match, David Burgess, Ray Oldfield and Les Bennett defeated Allan Cook, Don Ginns and Doug McGufficke. In the Singles semi-finals, both of last year's finalists were successful so will meet again this year in the final. In the first Match, Ian Hansen defeated Warwick Moody. Hansen was behind early but after trailing 8 shots to 13 after 12 ends, he won the next 9 ends to take a comfortable lead and go on to win. In the other Semi-final, Curly Petersen had a real struggle to win against Graeme Glover. Early in the match the lead changed four times but then Curly surged to what looked like a winning lead, 24 shots to 16. However, Graeme had other ideas. Graeme won the next 5 ends to trail by a single shot, 23 shots to 24. Then in what proved to be the last end, Graeme held two shots, both close to the jack which would give him the match but Curly drew the absolute shot with his second last bowl to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and win a great match 25 shots to 23. Congratulations to all winners and commiserations to the losers. This week is a busy one which kicked off with the Monthly jackpot Pairs Monday, Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, the Twilight Challenge Wednesday and Scroungers Friday. There will also be more Championship Matches played. Finally, thanks to all the helpers in preparing the green, gardening and coaching the Maleny High School Students. JULY 27 2016 |

Just for Laughs Strawberries
Farmer Evans was driving his John Deere tractor along the road with a trailer load of fertiliser. Tim a little boy of eight was playing in his yard when he saw the farmer and asked, “what've you got in your trailer?” “Manure,” Farmer Evans replied. “What are you going to do with it?” asked Tim. “Put it on my strawberries,” answered the farmer. Tim replied, “You ought to come and eat with us, we put ice-cream on our strawberries.”
You've got mail!
John was mowing his front lawn when his neighbour, Shane, came out of his house and went straight to the mailbox. Shane opened it, looked inside, slammed it
shut and stormed back into his house. A little while later, he came out again, went to the mailbox, opened it and slammed it shut again. Angrily he went back into his house. As John was getting ready to edge the lawn, Shane came out of his house again and marched straight over to the mailbox. Red with frustration he checked it a third time and slammed it closed, this time harder than ever. Puzzled by his neighbour's actions, John inquired "is something wrong?" Shane replied, "yes, there certainly is, my stupid computer keeps telling me I have mail!" Submitted by Margaret, Glass House Mountains

Week beginning 27/07/2016 ARIES March 21 – April 20 Having finished the Full Moon period, last week, the first week of next month should see some major changes in your life. So this weekend you may feel recklessly impetuous, impatient and restless! This means it is time to chill out. Also important to avoid ‘roadrage’. An unusual companion arrives into your life unexpectedly. TAURUS April 21 – May 22 Your self-starting instincts are likely to have a break through as someone comes to your rescue. It should be fine to say ‘yes’ to sudden offers. The Moon will be in your sign to start this week and should produce real dividends up to the weekend. Take a second look at any cheap bargains or offers that may have strings attached to them. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 The Moon will be in your sign Friday through to Sunday. It should stir you from your dreams and bring out a brilliant innovative idea to be a progressive out of the box thinker. Perhaps it is a better use of your iPhone. Don’t drive if you are upset as there may be ‘road-rage’ out there on the weekend. Plan improvements on Sunday. CANCER June 22 – July 22 You should find yourself involved, more than usual, in social and community affairs. Consider yourself lucky as they will be enjoyable. By the weekend money is a contentious issue, however, it would still be great to go out and have some fun if only everybody could agree on the place to go to! A shiny new trinket is yours to buy.

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 A sudden inspiration arrives today and rejuvenates itself through to the weekend. What would be really good for you is to enjoy a touch of luxury, as against looking for the cheap result again. For instance, if it is a train ride, choose the more luxury version rather than the economy run. In fact, use public transport more. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 You are at your level headed best this week so you can put aside any high minded ideals and do what is practical and pragmatic for your loved ones. Just keep the peace by asking questions about others beliefs and opinions as the weekend can clash with minds that are not easily changed. Time to sort things out. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 There are breakthroughs that you feel coming in, so you may have a fast thinking, oddly stimulating idea. Perhaps it will be a sudden offer from an evening connection. Just remember to keep cool on differing values as stubborn positions can always create a standoff and thereby people retreat in their private closets. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Get ready for a sudden opportunity or chance to demonstrate your brilliance at work, which can make you shine amongst others. This week could see that many of your ideas are inevitably bright. The weekend sees leisurely pace of calls, travels, interactions and activities. No need to push too hard as you will get ahead anyway!

24
LEO July 23 – August 22 This week may see you in a new turn having an exciting conversation and proceeding forward with a bright idea. The weekend has the flavour of roast dinners so it is good to spend more time with home and family. A friend is very unstable, so you should not become involved. If drugs are involved steer clear at all costs. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 There is much to do with travel and dealings with people from a distance. Any educational or legal matters are favoured; these may include having a check-up with any visas necessary. Whilst you are out driving other commuters may be brash and impulsive, so drive with due diligence. The weekend sees much for you now. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Use your days before the weekend to do some brain storming and be inspired by a dream for a breakthrough. You don’t need to follow others values, but remember that if you have strong regard to your own, that may lead to differences or arguments. Restrain yourself from angry retorts over the weekend fighting about finances. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Perhaps you are better off not knowing about some secrets. It’s good to leave past transgressions where they belong, that is, in the past and the only way forward is to get over them. The weekend sees you stepping out of your social comfort zone, which should be fun, liberating and ground breaking when Sunday arrives.
