W
ell as it says on the cover – it's show time, yes for the 78th time locals will be heading to the Maleny Showground this Friday and Saturday to join in the fun. And even though we head along each year (yes and we have gone in the rain, thankfully not in hail, but definitely in the sun) I realise that there has been much I haven’t actually known about. But not this year. Regular readers will know GC&M News has included something almost every week about a different element of the show. As the show’s ‘Media Partner’ we have been much more involved in the show than ever before, and it has been great. Working on the four page liftout (in the centre of the paper) I have learnt so much about what happens at the show – so don’t forget to take it with you, when you head along this year. And now for the most important thing (and I am whispering this as I say it as I don’t want to jinx anything) cross your fingers for dry weather!

Local News Concerns with Main Roads plans By Greg Brown
Back in edition May 6, GC&M News reported that the Department of Transport and Main Roads had referred the Bruce Highway – Steve Irwin Way – Caloundra Road intersection redevelopment proposal to the Federal Department of Environment for their formal assessment and approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999) (or the EPBC Act). This referral action is taken when there is, or is likely to be, a significant impact on any matters of national environmental significance. In the Main Roads referral application, they self-assessed that their project would not cause impacts on any areas or species that the federal department would need to have concern about. Unfortunately, the Department of the Environment has determined otherwise, and last week disagreed with the Main Roads self-assessment, deciding that the project would trigger a ‘controlled action’ provision of the EPBC Act. In making its determination, the Department of Environment raised concerns regarding the project’s impacts on listed threatened species and communities. Main Roads will now have to provide further, more detailed information, which will need to be

made public for community comment. State Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle MP, highlighted his concerns about the process in the GC&M News May 6 story. "I am delighted with the announcement and sincerely hope the outcome is the protection of our precious environment. At last we will get a full impact assessment so long needed and called for,” he said. “There is no doubt an upgrade to the Caloundra interchange is essential as traffic on Bruce Highway must increase. At the same time the balance between growth and the environment however must be struck.” The news is also welcomed by the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) spokesperson Narelle McCarthy. “The decision for the project to be a controlled action is welcome and appropriate,” she said. “SCEC – on behalf of the 50 community groups we represent, including the local Save Steve Irwin Way Forest Group – made a detailed submission as to why the Main Roads application was unacceptable. “Our concerns have now been validated with this decision and we look forward to working cooperatively to ensure that this area of high conservation value is protected and that Main Roads re-engineer their road plans accordingly.”

While the event is in its fifth year, this will be Mark’s first time fundraising for the event, which takes place over two days and takes in an approximately 200km journey through the scenic Queensland countryside. The money raised will benefit the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, one of Australia’s largest and most successful medical research institutes. Mark was motivated to take part in the ride after hearing about it from a friend who planned to enter last years’ fundraiser - thinking that it was “a good thing to do.” Mark has committed to the event and is now in the process of fundraising and seeking sponsorship. Riders must raise a minimum of $2,500, and Mark is off to a good start with $800.00 raised so far from a charity barbecue and the sales from his own home made jam! All donations big or small will be gratefully received. If you would like to be a sponsor, $200.00 will secure a sponsorship logo on the jersey sleeve that will be worn throughout the event, while $500.00 ensures the sponsor’s logo on either the back or front of the ride jersey. As part of his fundraising efforts, Mark has organised a stand up comedy night at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club on Saturday,
Mark Brookes set to support the Ride to Conquer Cancer June 6. Featuring the hilarious Brisbane based comedian Jenny Wynter, and supported by local comedy acts, tickets are on sale now for $30.00 which includes table finger food. Mark promises that the evening will be a ‘great night out’ that also supports a very worthy cause. If you would like to attend the comedy night, or find out further details, tickets can be purchased by contacting Mark on 0409 128 487 or via email on markb@breezeview.com.au. NBN tower alarms Maleny After the recent NBN information session held at Maleny, more questions have been raised than answered about the possible location of two previously unannounced microwave broadband towers. Causing considerable angst is a proposal to build a tower in the heart of Maleny, on land owned and used by Sunshine Coast Council as a works depot on Palm Street, adjacent to the Maleny Hospital. According to Jim Straker, spokesperson for the Towerless NBN for Maleny Hinterlands Group, locals are not happy with this latest development and voiced their opposition at a public meeting held at the site last Saturday. “The new proposal for a microwave tower in Palm Street shows absolute contempt for the Telecommunications facility code contained within the Sunshine Coast Council Planning Scheme,” said Jim. “The tower will be less than 100m from a retirement village, whereas the planning code says it must be at least 400m. “It will be 150m from the hospital, but the code says it must be at least 500m. The site is 10m from a public pathway, rather than the 20m it has to be, and is 30m from an existing microwave antenna on the water tower. But the code says that it should be at least 1km from an existing antenna. “The location isn’t suitable and the tower isn’t acceptable,” he said. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay is not supportive of the proposal. “NBN are following due process and should they wish to proceed, they will need to lodge formal applications through council,” Cr McKay said. “However, I am not supporting the location of this proposed tower. I cannot see that it has the desired community benefit,” she said. Anyone who is concerned about the possible location of this tower can contact the Towerless NBN for Maleny Hinterlands Group through Jim on 5494 3229 or zrowaste@sctelco.net.au
NBN tower for Peachester
Some Peachester locals are astounded at plans for a tower to be located on Range Road, after some residents received a letter from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines informing them of an application to close part of the road reserve along Range Road to …'construct a wireless broadband facility…' Ian Linwood, who received the letter, is very concerned about the plans. “This is the first I’d heard about any towers going up around here,” he said. “Back in March I received a form-letter from NBN to attend a meeting at Maleny but it only mentioned that they were looking at a tower in Peachester. “It didn’t say where. Consequently I didn’t go to the meeting as I didn’t think it would affect me.” Mr Linwood’s house is just over 100m from the proposed tower location, and with around 20 other properties within a 400m radius. “It seems crazy, as it doesn’t follow the requirements that the council sets out, and it will have to be really tall to get the coverage over the whole of Peachester range. “Being that tall, the tower will be a bloody eyesore and then there’s no guarantee that I’ll get any wireless broadband, as the signals may go too high over me to get their signal,” he said. “And how many others in the local area don’t have any idea what’s going on?” Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski was similarly surprised by the announcement. “NBN hasn’t informed me of their plans in Division 1, including Peachester, so I’m at a bit of a loss,” Cr Baberowski said. “It would be preferable for NBN to be more open about their process and communicate directly with the Peachester community rather than through something which is held at Maleny. “If the wireless broadband system is the only option on offer, then NBN need to ensure that the community is convinced it is safe and that we are getting the very best we can. “I’m committed to work with local residents and the NBN to ensure that the resulting outcomes deliver fast broadband to as many people as possible, with the highest level of reliability,” he said. Mr Linwood is happy to provide information on the proposal and how to lodge objections to anyone in the Peachester area who has concerns. He can be emailed on ilinwood@iprimus.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

The 13 month calendar has been billed by Misty as “vintage inspired with a cheeky and tantalising aspect to it.” The project has been wonderfully supported by the local community. Misty has just finished styling all the scenes and most of the shoots have already been completed. Readers may be familiar with Misty’s work as a Landsborough based beauty therapist and she recently stepped in to assist this year’s Maleny Miss Showgirl winner, Caitlin Powter – styling her hair, makeup and nails. The ‘calendar girls’ have all been confirmed with the majority of women stepping up to support this cause coming from friends and supporters at Maximise Health and Fitness at Beerwah. Maximise business owner Kirstee has even volunteered to showcase her talents as a calendar girl! Misty is still looking for interested local sponsors who can support in a number of ways. Spaces are still available for sponsorship of the pages; however the main focus currently for Misty and her supporters is to seek sponsors who can
Money matters and budgeting have always been a source of worry and stress for most people. Nicole Hilton, Business Development Officer for Maleny Credit Union had seen her fair share of young people in financial distress, many lacking even a basic knowledge of financial matters. Working in conjunction with Nev Dance, head of the Maths Department at Maleny State High School, she has put together the Financial Literacy Program, a 108 page workbook aimed at Year 10 students.

contribute to or fund the initial calendar print run of 2,000. The call has also gone out to any local printing businesses who may wish to offer a printing discount. All sponsors will have their logos included in the calendar as well as complementary tickets to the gala launch in September. The girls are planning to finalise the calendar by mid June to allow enough time for final design and printing ahead of the gala launch at the Maleny RSL on September 19 with all funds raised aiding Rare Cancers Australia. If you would like to support in any way please contact Misty on 0451 272 057 or visit facebook.com/vintagecalendargirls.com

“Year 10 is when a lot of kids start entering the workforce,” Nicole explains. “We wanted to be able to give these young people the tools to make wise financial decisions.” Running over 22 weeks, Maleny High School students have just completed the first three units and it has been very well received by students and teachers alike. Covering a different topic every week from budgeting to financial scams, it has exercises and scenarios, designed to have the kids interacting with the information. The program is designed to be able to be taught by the teachers at the school, but the team at Maleny Credit Union will also be on hand to lecture on some of the units, giving the students a chance to learn directly from experts in the field. Maleny High School is proud to be the first to implement such a program in the region, but Nicole is keen to help other schools in the region benefit from this free program. If you are interested in finding out more about the program please contact Nicole Hilton at Maleny Credit Union on 5499 8988.

Maleny show memories
FOOT AND ANKLE CLINIC
NEW CLINIC OPENING 1st June
By Tina Grieve
With the 78th Maleny Show coming up this weekend, one person who has been to a large number of the last 77 shows is Maleny local, Bill Hankinson. The Hankinson name is very familiar to locals, with the Show Arena named after one of Bill’s uncles, Dave Hankinson. A farming family since the 1880’s, Bill and his wife Marlene actually still live in the family home, built by Bill’s grandparents. Bill’s earliest memories of the show are of his parents working, with his father in the arena, and his mother helping with the food. Bill says as a child his family loved the Maleny Show, and he remembers a very different show to what we see today. “It really was the social event of the year," he said, “the men would all be dressed up in their suits and hats, and the women would be wearing their best dress and hats.” Wife Marlene agrees. “I won a raffle one year,” she remembers, “it was a live turkey. I very much wanted to keep him, but I ended up selling him to buy a hat, just for the Maleny Show.” While hats were the fashion when he was a boy, gumboots seem more appropriate to visitors today. It's not uncommon for the Show weekend to be wet and muddy, but Bill remembers one year in the 1960’s where it actually had to be cancelled because of severe drought. “The farmers just had no way of getting their cows ready for the show," he said. Some things might have changed, but visitors to the modern Maleny Show still love the ring

events. Bill remembers when he was Ring Steward that the animals featured were quite a bit different to today. “The horse events were people entering with their everyday workhorse and they would enter every event. Nowadays, it is much more professional,” he said. Sideshow alley has also changed quite a bit in its 77 years, but is still just as popular as it was with kids from Bill’s era. Alongside the Merry-go-Rounds and Knock-em-downs, one of Bill’s favourite memories was watching Jimmy Sharman’s Boxing Troupe and the local farmers trying to challenge them after an ale or two! While it may have gone through many changes over its lifetime, Bill agrees that the show has had to change with the community. “It has been a privilege to be involved with so many wonderful people through the Maleny Show,” he said.

Do not buy a solar hot water system until you have read this…. The latest European design Bluey solar hot water collectors (panels) have arrived So what? They are, according to the government testing authority, 27.5% more efficient judged by the STC allocation, than the best selling Australian solar hot water system.
How do I benefit? They are designed for use in Europe. Europe enjoys (?) much cloudier weather than we do in Queensland. So when the other brands need their booster elements, your Bluey keeps collecting heat and storing the hot water for you.

Many seniors think about moving into a retirement village or caravan park as a way to downsize when the family home becomes too big for them. At the Beerwah Library workshop on June 3 from 1.00pm - 2.30pm, Lawyers experienced in the field of retirement villages will discuss important questions such as what is a retirement village? What is the difference between a retirement village and a manufactured home park? What does it cost to buy into a retirement village? What sort of ownership will I get: freehold, leasehold, license, or company title? Are there costs I will have to pay while living in a retirement village? What happens if I become too ill to continue living in a retirement village? The session is free, however bookings are essential, phone 5475 8989.

Support for farmers wives Outspoken presents Ramona Koval By Sonia Clark A couple of months ago we ran a letter from Kay Farrell from the Sunshine Girls who are encouraing other locals to fill an empty shoe box with little items that a 'lady on the land' who has had to go without might really appreciate. We just wanted to remind readers that there is still time to donate a shoebox of little luxuries and practical items that would lift their spirits. The date of collection from the various drop off points, will not be until the end of August. Items such as face cream, shampoo and conditioner, nail files, nail or hand cream, deodorant, pretty soaps, even a nice new hair brush, hair ties, a beanie, scarf, or comfy socks etc are suitable suggestions (please do not put nail polish or lollies in the boxes). The Sunshine Girls are requesting that the boxes are covered - maybe with some pretty paper, and please put an elastic band around the box to keep the contents secure but do ensure that it’s not sealed. If you would like to assist, the following locations have agreed to be drop off points in the local community: Chardooze Hair Design at Beerburrum, Beerwah Newsagents, St Vincents at Landsborough, Mark McArdle’s office at Caloundra and the Maleny Information Centre. Alternatively you can drop in a filled box to us at the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News office at 16 Coonowrin Road Glass House Mountains.

The Outspoken Festival is back in Maleny with four separate events planned. The first is with Ramona Koval and Krissy Kneen on June 16 at the Maleny Community Centre. This will be followed up by John Birmingham and Andrew McMillen on July 22. On September 2 the event will feature Kate Grenville and Olivera Simic and Tim Flannery and Kate Holden on September 8. Both Ramona and Krissy will be in conversation with local author and Festival Director, Steven Lang. With Ramona focusing on her memoir ‘Bloodhound, Searching for My Father’. Krissy will be talking about her new novel, ‘The Adventures of Holly White and the Incredible Sex Machine’. For almost two decades Ramona Koval sat at the centre of Australian literary life. She began as an interviewer on Radio National’s Books and Writing program but went on to be the host on The Bookshow. In ‘Bloodhound: Searching for My Father’, Romona’s passion for books and writing has been turned inwards. She presents a very personal account of the journey she undertook in search of her biological father. Koval’s parents were Holocaust survivors who fled their homeland and
Fight continues for the Maleny-Kenilworth Road Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, has once again strapped on his boots to walk the length of Maleny-Kenilworth Road from Little Yabba Creek to Tesch Park in Maleny to show the community his commitment to securing funding to repair the Maleny-Kenilworth Road for the seventh year in a row. Mr Powell said he had made it his mission over the past six years, to continue to lobby the government to allocate much needed funds, to ensure the ongoing safety of our residents and tourists by delivering an upgrade to this road. “Unfortunately this road has suffered badly at the hands of several weather events and funding that could have been used to make long term repairs has been re-directed to fixing landslips and other major structural defects as a result of extensive damage,” he said.

“I have no intention of ever giving up to fight to fix this road. My campaign for funding for this road has now formed part of my ‘Fighting for Glass House’ wish list and I will continue to walk this walk until we know funds are secure. Mr Powell is also using his walk to raise funds for the Chaplains at Maleny and Conondale State School. He is calling on community members to donate whatever they can in an effort to ensure these Chaplains can continue providing their fantastic service to our school students. “Donation forms for Scripture Union can be collected from my office or you can donate online at www.suqld.org.au/donate<http:// www.suqld.org.au/donate - just be sure to include Conondale State School or Maleny State School in your donation allocation.

settled in Melbourne. As a child, Koval learned little about their lives - only snippets from traumatic tales of destruction and escape – but she always suspected the man who raised her was not her real father. Long after her mother’s death, she decided she must know the truth. ‘Bloodhound’ is a moving story of the terrible cost of war and of family secrets. Krissy Kneen is the award-winning author of several books, including the memoir 'Affection', which was shortlisted for a Queensland Premier’s Literary Award; 'Triptych: An Erotic Adventure', and the novel 'Steeplechase'. In 2014, she won the prestigious Thomas Shapcott Award for poetry. She is founding member of Eatbooks Inc. and, amongst all these other achievements manages to be the marketing and promotions officer at Avid Reader bookshop in Brisbane. The first of these events will be a 6.00pm for 6.30pm start. Tickets are $15.00 and $10.00 students and can be purchased at the Maleny Bookshop, for more information phone 5494 3666.

Winston Churchill once said, we make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give. An exciting project coming to the Sunshine Coast for the first time, SpeedSeed, will give businesses, groups and individuals an opportunity to give meaningfully to local community projects and enterprises. SpeedSeed is a speed-dating inspired event for both sides of the change-maker equation – people with ideas and energy and people with resources to invest in social and environmental good. Local SpeedSeed coordinator, Helen Wilkinson, said there are many benefits of giving, especially when it is to those in our local community. “People get a real buzz from giving, particularly when they can build relationships with those they are giving to and can see how their contribution makes a difference over time,” she said. “The benefits are felt even more so when the giver can feel like they are actively a part of what they are giving to.” “It’s not only businesses who can reap the rewards of giving. One novel idea happening in some places is where a number of individuals pool together their own money and give collectively to have a greater impact. “Though giving doesn’t need to be confined

to money, it can also be time, expertise and resources,” said Helen. Mooloolah local, Jessica Raintree, has already signed up to invest her skills in a community initiative through SpeedSeed. “I’ll be looking for a project where I can offer my energy and experience in fundraising. That way I can make a real difference and become involved in something I can feel passionate about,” said Jessica. SpeedSeed is presented by The Goodness Inc. in collaboration with the Hinterland Community Development Program and is proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council. A pre-event info-workshop for investors will be held on Wednesday, June 24 from 5.30pm 7.30pm at the Beerwah RSL. Applications are also open for change-makers and are due Friday, June 12. The SpeedSeed event will be held on July 22. If you are interested to see what initiatives are brewing in our community and want to give, or would like to participate as a change-maker, please contact Helen at helen@thegoodnessinc. org or 0410 057 315.

Inspired by the rich heritage and colourful palette of Indian textiles, Sapling Textiles grew from a tiny seed of an idea. The idea was to create a space in which the nonsewer was inspired to sew, craft or create and for the experienced sewer to approach their craft with renewed vigour. We are a small, ethically focused store in the heart of Maleny. Come in and touch and feel the fabrics adorning the walls, rummage through our little jars of hand-crafted buttons and find everything you need to create.

Stay motivated to exercise over winter! Contributed by Maximise Fitness It's getting colder and we are losing the light, which doesn't help the motivation levels for exercising over winter. We need to remind ourselves, winter workouts are just as important as those in summer! But if you are tempted to hit the snooze button, remember staying motivated this winter requires only one change: your mindset. Sure, the colder conditions encourage eating more and doing less, but motivation is based on two things. The first is having a goal or target to aim for. The second is clearly understanding the positive effects your actions will have on your life. Connect with these two forces and you will always be inspired. Another great motivator is a workout buddy ... find a friend that will commit to joining you and hold you accountable. Knowing someone is waiting for you might be just the stimulus you need to throw back the covers and get out of the house.
End Emotional Eating… and avoid the dreaded “Winter Spread!” By Sharon Chapman I’ve permanently reduced my emotional eating by 90% (and my dress size from a 16 to a 10) using E.F.T. (Emotional Freedom Technique) and so can you! Emotional eating may have many causes which result in weight gain, unhealthy eating habits and pains in the body. In just one session, we can alleviate any desire for cravings or addictive foods (such as ice-cream, pastries, hot chips, pasta, white bread, sweets, cakes and fizzy / energy drinks). Diets don’t work, in fact they set you up to fail. Until you resolve the underlying emotional issues (anxiety, stress, grief, trauma etc) that are causing you to eat the wrong foods and beverages – or quantity of them – you will continue to experience weight gain. E.F.T. or 'tapping' involves tapping on acupuncture points on the face and body (without using needles) with immediate and impressive results. $89.00 initial session or 10% discount for a package of three sessions over three weeks for $240.00.
Emotional Freedom Technique with Sharon Chapman Would you like to experience a feeling of Relief, Inner Peace and Calmness about a situation you are finding upsetting … and are unsure of how to deal with? EFT often works when nothing else will. Perfect for helping you with ... • Weight Loss • Anxiety / Depression • Finance Worries • Relationships • Career Issues • Phobias • Injury Rehabilitation • Conflict Resolution
Effective & safe for children, adults, during pregnancy & with any medical treatment.

Super efficient solar hot water now available locally
Business feature
It may have a strange name, but according to Ian Hall from All Energy HQ the latest technology in residential water heaters is a hit with local homeowners. The Bluey solar hot water service is 27.5% more efficient at heating and storing hot water than probably all other Australian solar hot water services of equal size. And local residents, such as Fred Rudduck, from Glass House Mountains, are cashing in. Fred has recently replaced his electric hot water service with a Bluey, and he is delighted. Ian says that the European designed technology makes the difference. “It’s more efficient because the European designed solar panels work much more efficiently in cloudy weather,” he said. “So when the other solar systems use their electric booster switch and pay for heating their water, the Bluey keeps soldiering on producing free hot water.” Aren’t hot water solar panels and solar grid panels the same? “No,” says Ian, “they are totally different. Hot water solar panels are full of copper pipes and need radiant (the sun’s) heat to heat the water inside. “Grid solar panels, also called PV or photovoltaic, convert sunlight into electricity. So hot water panels can only heat the water within them, and solar PV panels can only produce electricity,” explained Ian. Locally, the Bluey is only available from All Energy HQ at Glass House Mountains. They also install grid solar systems, battery storage (Lithium-ion), energy monitoring, and now solar hot water. For further information call them on 5438 7200.
Friends of Mary Cairncross Association It’s Autumn
Watching the glorious Autumn trees change colour along the range makes this one of my favourite times of the year. The stunning red, yellow and orange leaves brighten my day. They also herald cooler weather and open fires (and glasses of red wine!) In the rainforest we have one deciduous tree – the magnificent Red Cedar (Toona ciliata). These were of course favourite trees for loggers early last century, prized for the beautiful rich red of the polished timber. In the Mary Cairncross rainforest there are a number of Red Cedars which would have been too young as the last loggers left the patch. Now they’re mature trees, easily recognisable by their scaly bark, “like a crocodile’s back” a Year 3 child on a guided walk once commented. On the bottom track there is one Red Cedar estimated to be 500 years old. It escaped logging as it is twisted, and knobbly and has buttress roots which go up almost the whole height of the tree – approximately 42.5 metres. This tree also has a frog swimming pool … a hole in the buttress roots which always has water in it. Red Cedars are emergents which means they are taller than the canopy layer and if you look up in late Autumn or Winter, past the epiphytes and ferns, the bare branches can be seen spreading out over the forest. Wait for Spring when they are covered in stunning new red leaves. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protection and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Come and get Twisted in Maleny The Twisted Cafe in Maleny, is indeed a cafe with a twist. Whilst you will find all the things you expect from a great cafe, there is also a very inspiring story behind the cafe's origins. The Twisted Cafe Maleny, found in the Riverside Centre, was opened recently by Maleny local, Rick Page. He has dedicated the cafe to children with Trisomy conditions and their families; founded on the attributes they inspire … hope, love and strength. Rick's son, Lachlan was born with Trisomy 18, or Edwards Syndrome. The related Trisomy 21 condition, Down Syndrome is the one that most people have heard of. Edwards Syndrome however, has a much higher mortality rate and unfortunately, in most cases,
much more severe complications. It has been described as being ‘incompatible with life’. Lachlan, however has so far proven them wrong. His bright smile shows he is more than just compatible with life, he is loving it! Caring for Lachlan does pose challenges. With Lachlan no longer able to attend daycare due to the risk of infections, Rick came up with the idea of creating a space where he could work and Lachlan could come and relax. The Twisted Cafe caters for everyone, with wide open spaces for easy wheelchair access. Come and sit in the comfy couches inside or relax out the back on the deck overlooking the Obi Obi River. The cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 6.00am to 7.00pm every day!
With their diverse menu options, you can order anything at anytime of the day. If you want a steak for breakfast or their very popular waffles for dinner, the friendly staff are more than happy to oblige. A quick cuppa and bite to eat is also no problem, with their delicious Maleny Coffee and generous slices of cake easily made to takeaway. Healthier options are a priority at The Twisted Cafe with an air fryer for their chips and wedges and options such as grilled fish and salads. Rick likes to give back to the local community that has supported him and Lachlan and has set up a tips jar with all takings going to the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade. He will also pitch in a dollar if you are willing to be photographed wearing his Chicago Fire Department helmet and let him post the photo to the cafe's Facebook page. So head to the Riverside Centre on Maple Street, Maleny today and find out yourself why everyone loves getting Twisted in Maleny.

ADVERTORIAL
All creatures great and small
Open Day at Glasshouse Christian College this year featured cute little furry creatures from a petting zoo right alongside two large Angus stud cattle; a mother and calf named Helga and George. The stalls were set up to showcase the College’s Agricultural Science program which is very hands on. Students are taught cattle handling, have won sunflower competitions, clipped chicken wings, planted and harvested crops, and learned the science behind it all. A popular addition to this year’s Open Day was a little red train and carriage which took visitors on free rides Primary student tour guides gather ready to to see the newly expanded campus. The train driver welcome visitors to Open Day looked a little like Santa Clause and two GCC staff members dressed as conductors to call out the attractions of each stop so an atmosphere of fun prevailed. Student music performances were so popular that the 140-seat theatre was crammed to overflowing but the biggest crowd gathered for the Dance performances on the grass outside the library. Once again the Dance students wowed the audience with their grace and skill. Visitors were treated to free morning and afternoon tea by the Hospitality students. Chocolate slice, mini quiches, ginger cake and sausage rolls were enjoyed in the new undercover garden café while GCC students entertained visitors with live musical performances. Even though there were lots of fun and free activities, what made the day really special was the GCC students. The students worked hard at cooking, serving, singing, demonstrating, giving speeches, performing and taking visitors on tours with a wonderfully cheerful attitude.
Dad Talk
with the Superdads
A Little Splash of Special
By Peter Voigt (rhythm guitarist/vocalist for The Superdads) Recently, I’ve discovered something that I would like to share. When I was a kid my family always did everything together. Likewise, as a Dad I’ve always done everything with my family as one happy unit. Now don’t get me wrong; doing things as a family is a wonderful thing and something that we should all strive for. However, what I’ve recently realised is that easing off on the ‘everything’ is not only okay, but a healthier pathway for the family unit. It’s okay to take your son to a game at the ‘Gabba’ and not feel guilty that all of your kids aren’t by your side. It’s okay to take your daughter to a concert. I’ve come to recognise that these ‘one on one’ adventures are as important to your children as the family outings. They give you and your child an opportunity to develop your relationship on a more personal level; be more open; become closer; share unique experiences. This private contact with Dad makes your child feel special, individual and loved for the person that they are. I once thought that spending solo time with one child wouldn’t go down too well with the others. I’ve been amazed to learn that these solo journeys rarely cause tears; I guess they know that their special ‘solo’ time with Dad is next. So, if like me, you tend to pilot the cruise ship from port to port, I suggest you try changing boats every now and then. Keep the cruise ship as the stronghold, but one day why not jump into a yacht with one of your kids and do something special. Get behind the wheel of a catamaran with another and create the memory of a lifetime. Get your hands dirty on the handle of a paddle and strengthen the bond you have with one of your kids; spend some one on one time; give them a little splash of special. www.gcnews.com.au
Keys to Joyful Parenting In most cases, we only have the opportunity to live with our children for 18 years or so. These times are precious, and here are some ideas for parents to maximise joyful times, and minimise conflict and frustration.
Embrace Your Power as a Role Model Children pay more attention to what we do than what we say. As parents, that means we have opportunities every day to have a powerful impact on our children simply by the way we live our own lives. Whatever lesson we want to teach can be best taught by role modelling. We have the power to BE the person we want our child to be.
Celebrate Our Lack of Control It’s common place in our society to say “you can’t control another person”, but we sometimes feel our job as parents is to control our children. It’s not possible, and it inevitably leads to frustration. It’s actually wonderful that each of us are in control of our own actions, and no one can “make” us do anything. If your child refuses to do something, you have the choice to feel upset, or to embrace the reality that you cannot control them. It can be really powerful for a parent to say to a child who is refusing: “I am so proud of you that you realise that you have control over your own actions”.
Be Happy to Lose Power Struggles When our children become adults, we are not likely to say “I really miss the conflicts and arguing”. It’s in everyone’s interest to minimise conflict, but parents often engage in power struggles since we are conditioned to believe we have to “get our way” with children. If parents can let go of that idea, and be willing to let the child “win”, many conflicts can be avoided. Of course we have to keep our children safe, but very few of our “rules”, and power struggles, have to do with safety. When we focus on being peaceful and positive, our children try to do the same thing, leading to a more harmonious household.

Working together in a small town, and particularly in small industries, is very important. Co-operation can and should, to a large degree, work hand-in-hand with competition and to this end, one of our core activities at Maleny Commerce is networking. Our networking breakfasts are a real hit with businesses and the broader community and are a great opportunity to provide updates, promote events, seek opportunities for collaboration, and much more. In spite of the 7.00am start (or perhaps because of it for the early risers!) attendance usually hovers between 30 and 50 and we try and wrap up for 8.30am so we can all get back to work! Each month we have a key speaker (or several at times). In May we had a great breakfast at Pomodoras on Obi and presentations from the Oztag team discussing their fifty10 program www.fifty10.com.au and Cath Ovenden from the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre discussing the essential work they perform in our community.
Coming up on June 9 we have Michael Molloy from Events plus www.eventsplussunshinecoast. com.au discussing how you can promote your business or events through their apps. To join us book at www.malenycommerce.org.au Maleny Commerce is starting up a discussion in our business community to remind us all as businesses that not only is Maple Street a two hour maximum parking zone, but when staff and owners of businesses use Maple Street Parking for themselves for the day, that’s one spot a customer can't use. For example if a parking spot is used by customers for on average half hour, then one parking spot taken by staff or owners is going to lose up to 17 customers over an eight and a half hour day, this drives business out of town. So as a business make it your priority for Customer Only Parking on Maple Street. If we don’t fix this situation ourselves, parking meters will be on their way and we all lose out! Keep up the good work Maleny and see you next month.

A familiar face in a new place Judi Coey is a familiar face around the Maleny district. She has been very involved in the local community, including local sporting clubs, P&C’s and Chaplaincy committees over the years. With over 25 years’ experience, Judi has been working in the region as an Optometrist for the last eight years, and on March 1 she was very excited to open her own practice just opposite Maleny State School. Judi Coey Optometry was set up to create a space that was comfortable for the whole family to come into. The beautiful Burgum House has been transformed into just such a space. With her paediatric experience and work as a Behavioural Optometrist, Judi and her experienced and friendly staff can look after everyone in your family, from children’s vision, to
hospital spectacles and contact lenses and they delight in making all of their customers feel just that little bit special.

Discover the Grace Way The Grace Lutheran College Caboolture Campus commenced in 2008, providing a quality, Christian secondary College to the families in Caboolture and surrounds. Being a close-knit campus, Caboolture provides a caring learning environment similar to belonging to an inviting family where all students are well known and valued by all staff. 83% of Grace College students who graduated last year were on track to university compared to the average of local independent schools at 47%; the state at 53%; and the local high schools at 43%. These numbers are not achieved by accident. Grace adds value through free tutoring and homework help; student academic leaders mentoring and motivating students; regular communication with parents about progress; action plan for students needing support; new Senior Studies Centres; and their Academic Enrichment Programme challenges the large number of gifted and talented Grace students.

At Grace, they cater for all levels in co-curricular activities, offer plenty of options for your child’s interests, provide camps and Outdoor Education programs, and have international connections. Some of the activities on offer are performing arts (dance, instrumental music, choirs, musicals, backstage crew), sports (aussie rules, futsal, soccer, hockey, volleyball, beach volleyball, basketball, touch football, waterpolo, cricket, tennis, netball, softball, rugby league), academic enrichment (debating, chess, tutors, robotics), creative industries (news, film, cinematic theatre production, art), and service learning (faith and service, charity, community service). For four weeks all students in Year 10 attend Googa, an Outdoor Education Program facility. Under the direction of highly trained and specialised staff, the students gain a multitude of life experiences including adventure activities, hiking, camping, daily cooking, washing and cleaning, responsibility for feeding livestock, preparing devotions, as well as journal and letter
writing. Skills learnt at Googa assist students to grow academically and personally in the final two years of school and beyond. Pastoral care at Grace focuses on each student so they feel accepted and have the fullest possible opportunity for spiritual, personal, social, physical and academic growth. Such care is expressed through the teacher’s personal commitment to every individual student, to what that student is and what they can be. Discover the Grace Way and book a personal tour or visit their Caboolture Campus Open Day on Sunday, May 31 from 1.00pm to 4.00pm to discover how your child can thrive at Grace.

You Said It Brain cancers linked to mobile phones and transmission towers
I was one of countless locals who attended the recent public info session on NBN towers at Maleny. In a feature article in the Courier Mail, Dr John Tickell, a leading Australian Physician who has fought his own battle with brain cancer, is quoted as saying that the rising incidence in brain cancers is linked to the nationwide increase of mobile phone use and transmission towers (CM May 11, 2015). According to this same story, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has upgraded cell phone radiation to B2 Category which means possibly carcinogenic + cancer causing! When I approached several representatives of Eriksson and Aurecon at that public meeting with this news item, none of them appeared to know anything about any of it, nor did they seem very interested in any of it either. As a local resident and ratepayer I find it rather alarming that my neighbourhood of Maleny town is facing the likelihood of getting even more antennas and god knows what else attached to the water tower at the council depot in Palm Street exposing everybody to higher levels of constant radiation. When I raised the matter of the accumulated effect of emission levels in radiation in this residential neighbourhood, I was given the standard replies of that there was nothing to worry about and that "I should leave impartial assessments of these proposals to the real experts." I reckon it is completely unacceptable to endanger public health and safety in this residential part of town and I strongly urge other locals to come forward and make their views known ASAP. As for the proposed NBN tower sites at other locations of our region like Howells Knob, I fear for how the scenic appeal of such unique lookout sites could be ruined forever if those towers get plonked all over the place without some serious consideration. No Peachester microwave tower
I live not far down Range Road from the Peachester store, and have been informed by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines that a NBN microwave tower has been proposed to be built a stone’s throw from my house and many others in the Coochin Street, Neil Road, Range Road, Otto Road, Peachester Road, and Taroom Court areas. Unfortunately, only a couple of adjoining properties were notified by DNR&M. I have visited 90% of the residents within 400 metres of the proposed microwave tower site and all but two residents (they gave no comment) gave a resounding NO to the tower being built in this proposed location. I believe that this tower does not comply with Council’s Planning scheme and if a Development Application is applied for, there will be substantial local objections. NBN believe they can hold an information session in Maleny about the network, which includes Peachester, and hope no one from this community will come. The Peachester Community is up in arms about this. I believe a NBN representative should come to Peachester for an open meeting regarding the possible location (if required) of this NBN microwave tower. I understand that NBN were looking for a site for this proposed tower around Storrs Road, Peachester … so why do they want a second site on Range Road? Have the local landholders told them to ‘go away’ when NBN tried to convince them to allow a tower on their land? Is that why they’ve now picked a State owned road? NBN are not listening to communities across Australia regarding these towers and it would be more respectful to engage the community instead of their current approach. As Peachester has large gum trees and many dips and valleys, most of Peachester residents will not be able to receive the service via this tower anyway. The delivery of NBN to this community of Peachester via NBN towers is completely uneconomical, and in my opinion should be scrapped. Ian Linwood Peachester

Their fur detaches from them to your animal or if they’re near your washing line onto your washing, and no matter how much they scratch they can’t shake it loose, hence continual scratching. It their bedding has been on the washing line where they are, it’s all over that too! I have moved my washing line. If my dog goes near the bushes I wipe her down when she comes inside, and the problem is definitely getting better. Hope this helps. Dog lover, Beerwah
Thanks for your creative talent In the last edition of GC&M News we included a photo of the entrants at the Maleny Show Ball, and we just wanted to say thanks to Emma from Emma Ruddle Photography for allowing us to use her photograph. Is it a good time to refinance? It’s surprising many people don’t even know the ‘basics’ of what is for most, the largest financial transaction of their life! Small changes to rates, fees and how you’re structured can make a huge difference. If you’ve been paying off your mortgage for at least 1 year now, it’s time to review your loan. We can show you how much money you could be saving if you refinanced your loan. Refinancing your home loan is often a very simple process and the thousands of dollars of potential savings are well worth the effort and at Maleny Credit Union, we show you how to get your income working for you, as well as reducing the term of your home loan AND your monthly mortgage repayments. We take into account any upfront and ongoing costs associated with your existing mortgage and switching to the new one.
• What is important to you? • Are you after a lower interest rate? • Are you after better service? • Are you concerned about fees and other costs? • Are you after new features or options such as flexible repayments, redraw facilities and account splitting? Many struggle with their mortgage for 25 years or more, merely hoping that this debt will be paid off before they retire. We can help you pay off your mortgage sooner thereby ensuring a more secure future. It can be confusing to know which loan type to choose and what features are important. That's why it's important to not only check the right rates, but make sure that you're getting the right features in your home loan. Get help choosing the right home loan, come and see us at Maleny Credit Union or we can even come to you! See you soon, Connie.

Division 1 Councillor - Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Turner Park redevelopment
It is encouraging to hear many great things people are saying about the transformed Beerwah Town Centre, and it can only improve as the focus now moves to Turner Park. Construction of an entry plaza, custom ‘Beerwah’ seating walls and picnic settings under shade trees is now underway. In the coming months we will see this area become the strong park entry the community called for and this will complement the great work at Beerwah Tower Green.
Invest Sunshine Coast
I recently attended the launch of Invest Sunshine Coast where the region’s winning attributes were highlighted to attract national and international investment. I encourage everyone to view the new investment prospectus on council’s website—in particular local importers, exporters and those looking to get into these markets are sure to benefit. Take a look also at the Invest Sunshine Coast video for a confident overview of what our region has to offer.

Glasshouse Country News
With Braxton Turnage To eat well, you need to combine nutritional science, a bit of effort, and pure enjoyment. Most of us know that fresh salad, berries, and slowing down when eating are better for us than wolfing down energy bars and sweets. However how do you make the leap from your current habits to healthier ones? Here are six ways you can eat healthy, delicious meals, and really enjoy what you're eating. 1. Ditch whole milk Try healthier alternatives such as rice milk or almond milk. 2. Harness the power of nuts (and seeds) Almonds, cashews, filberts, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, and pistachios pack plenty of beneficial nutrients, including vitamin E, folic acid, potassium, and fibre. Although many nuts are high in fat, the fat is mainly unsaturated — a healthy choice. 3. Taste food before you salt it Break the autopilot habit of reaching for the salt shaker. Make a ritual out of truly tasting your food before you decide if it needs tweaking. 4. Pack lunch once a week This makes healthy food choices readily available to you at work or on an outing. And since you are controlling portion sizes, you can make sure that you're not supersizing your meal. Plus, it saves you money. 5. Eat five (or more) vegetables and fruits a day It's a nutrient-packed way to fill your plate, and is generally low in calories. 6. Plan meals that are delightful, delicious, and healthy It’s near impossible to maintain a diet that leaves you feeling like you’re missing out on something. A couple of times each week, take time to prepare a nice, healthy meal…it is possible to have healthy meals that are also delicious!

Library News From Patricia, Amanda and Staff at Beerwah Library
What’s happening at the library during June: Beerwah Library is bursting with inspiration and creativity and June is a month which has both in abundance. Learn online with the tab ‘Online Resources’ at Sunshine Coast Libraries website. Lynda.com has free video tutorials on various computer based programs that you can do at your own pace, in your own time. You can also access Transparent Language Online which is another free resource for learning a language online and it creates your own language tutorials based on your level. Parlez vous français anyone? Rug Hook Crafting for crafters and admirers. Tuesday, June 16, 2.30pm - 3.30pm. Bookings essential. Free afternoon tea provided. Join Judi Tompkins for an interactive presentation on the almost lost art of rug hook crafting. Three beautiful raffle pieces to be won on the day. Purchase your tickets at stalls outside the IGA and Woollies throughout May / June as well as at the event. Proudly sponsored by Beerwah Friends of the Library. And some staff recommendations for your next reading adventure… Q is for Quarry by Sue Grafton; Eyrie by Tim Winton; The Book Thief by Marcus Zusack; Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salmon Rushdie; Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin; Fit not healthy – how one ladies obsession to be the best nearly killed her by Vanessa Alford. Searching the catalogue to find a new read? Check out reader added reviews and recommendations under each title when you search, or scroll down to see what else patrons read afterwards. Beerwah Library will be closed on Friday, May 29 for the Maleny Show Day and all Libraries will be closed on the Monday, June 8 public holiday. Looking for books for your own collection? Check out the regular Beerwah Library book sale in the foyer of the library. All children’s books are 50 cents, for the adults only $1.00 for paperbacks and $2.00 for hardbacks.... and keep an eye out for our specials! School holidays are just around the corner so keep an eye out for the libraries ‘very, very, very, very bad school holiday program’ that will be advertised towards the end of June.
Hinterland Alive - Grand Opening of ‘Vianta Arts’
Locals and visitors have been enjoying the exhibitions of artwork on display at Vianta in Simpson Street, Beerwah over the past few months. Next month sees the official opening of ‘Vianta Arts’- a free access professional arts exhibition space, in the heart of Beerwah. Ten of our best local artists (not to suggest that we haven’t got a multitude to draw on!) are sharing the space for one month – from June 1 to 31, to celebrate the formal opening of the exhibition space. Artists exhibiting in ‘Hinterland Alive’ include Cathy Condon, Neville Field, Cholena Hughes, Heather Gall, Robyn Shaw, Leigh Camilleri, Christine Elcoate, Joanne Turner, Stephanie McLennan and Glenis Grey. Cathy and Neville are both well-known around Beerwah for their work with ‘Life Art Worldwide Arts’, and of course Jo Turner is locally recognised and admired for being a finalist in the prestigious Sunshine Coast Arts Prize last year. Heather Gall, Robyn Shaw and Christine Elcoate, are also well-known around the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. Each give us a distinct perspective of the visual aesthetic and distinctive nature of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, while Glenis Grey and Cholena Hughes provide a more abstract interpretation of the essence of our Hinterland, and Steph McLennan presents two masterful watercolours of our local birdlife. The exhibition promises to be an exciting combination of artistic styles, complementing each other in building a multi-dimensional experience of our very own Hinterland. On Friday, June 5 councillor Rick Baberowski will be opening the show, there will be light refreshments served at the opening and an a la carte menu available from 7.30pm. For information about the opening night or to find out about hanging a show at Vianta Arts please contact Michele at reddoorart@bigpond.com

Things To Do Col Finley Band at Maleny Show ‘The Col Finley Band’ are the modern day Outlaws of today’s music industry, with a depth, substance and character that is paving the way of Australian Blues, Folk and Country Music! The boys are very excited to be doing the Maleny launch of their new album ‘A Little Bit Outlaw’ at the Maleny Show on Friday night at the Cattleman’s Bar. This is the fifth Album for front Man Col Finley, his raw live energy, has made him a renowned entertainer in the Country / Blues industry. The album features 12 tracks penned by Col and features some of Col’s finest works in 22 years. It has already gained airplay on radio across the country and even in the USA.
La Belle Hélène The Maleny Singers’ latest musical production, ‘La Belle Hélène’ is set in Ancient Greece and tells the story of Helen, Queen of Sparta, reputedly the most beautiful woman in the world. Her love affair with Paris, and the Prince of Troy, later leads to the Trojan War, when supposedly a thousand Greek ships were launched to both rescue Helen and avenge her abduction. This operetta by French composer, Jacques Offenbach, is a funny, flirtatious version of ‘what might have happened’. Jealous goddesses, a deceived husband and scheming prophets all feature in a tongue-in-cheek romp, set to plenty of lively music. Don’t miss this saucy send-up, accompanied by the Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra at the Maleny Community Centre over the last two weekends in June. For more information see ad on page 10.
Eat Play Connect at Maleny Grove

In the Garden with Brownie
Gardening on the edge As part of Gardening on the Edge on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7 there will be six open gardens across Maleny and surrounding areas to view. So why not take the opportunity to admire other gardeners hard work? Cost for one garden is $5.00, three gardens $12.00 and six gardens is $20.00. Take a look at the ‘brief’ garden descriptions below and work out your plan of attack. Pick up your tickets at the free garden market at the Maleny Showgrounds where there will be displays and talks. Judith and John Mains, ‘Rose Dene’ A rural style garden of one acre which includes several garden rooms; manicured hedges featuring a Helical Curve, a coffee tree hedge, vegetable garden, cottage / rose gardens and a rainforest area with a Balinese influence. The garden will showcase their quirky attitude towards the unusual. Metal art will feature throughout the garden and items will be available for sale. Located at 370 Curramore Road, Curramore. Marie Strichen and Ben Munneke The garden which is dominated by two large bumpy ash trees has been established over the past six years and has slowly evolved with lots of cottage garden pants, natives and down in the back corner goes everything else. Many of the plants are a result of cuttings from friends and forays into garden club member’s gardens. Ben will also have his vintage cars on display. Located at 96 Kings Lane, Reesville. Heather Jones, Artist Heathberry Lakeside is a garden to wander through at leisure. With paths and archways leading to the lake and a great variety of plants and trees.
Browse through the Art studios and then walk down the driveway to the sculpture studio and forest area around the lake. There are little bridges crossing to the islands for the adventurous. Located at 160 Curramore Road, Curramore. Jim and Kim Straker ‘Hilldene’ is a ‘Garden for Wildlife’ and over 26 different bird species, koalas, native bees, possums, echidnas and lizards visit the property. Many older varieties of hibiscus and camellia have been here for more than 30 years and a Pseudo Bombax Elipticum is a rare sight for gardening enthusiasts. There will be a coffee van on site. Located at 6 Meadow Road, Reesville. Peter and Margaret Owens After purchasing a blank canvas 15 years ago close to 800 rainforest seedlings were planted on both sides of the stream, with more added later. White and green have been chosen as the predominate colours in the front garden except for camellias that offer a variety of reds, pinks and pale lilac colours in the late autumn and winter months. Seven Tropical Birches, create an ‘avenue’ to one of several small garden rooms while a number of clipped hedges create a pleasant formality to the garden. Located at 15 Beechwood Road, Maleny. Jan Davies This one acre property sits at the end of a quiet country lane, bordering farmland, there are several large trees, including a Tamarind and a very large Little Gem Magnolia. The gardens surround the edge of the property and consist of native and cottage garden shrubs as well as a variety of fruit trees. The main area is allocated to open space lawn with a few gardens placed throughout, with an area to sit and observe the many birds that live in and around the property. The CWA will be providing teas and lunches in this garden. Located at 8 Koala Court, Witta.

Enough doom and gloom… I was born at the end of the 70’s and was a child in the 80’s… sure there were bad things that happened but we seemed to have more of a naivety and peacefulness in our lives than kids do today. We have 24 hour news, radio, Facebook and the internet in general, feeding us a constant stream of info about all the bad stuff that is going on around us - it seems to go on and on and on. The reason I am bringing this up is I believe hearing this stuff – day in day out – does something to us as people. I believe it slowly deadens us to ever believing that there is any good in other people. We can become anxious and suspicious about the people around us and

become isolated, fearful, and antisocial beings. I believe that the bible has some great antidotes for this sort of negativity. There is a great verse in the bible that I want to share with you. It is actually a wonderful challenge to us in how to respond to the world around us. The verse goes like this: ‘Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you… pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.’ Jeremiah 29:7 Now our communities of Glasshouse Country will benefit if we pray for it. We need to pray that God will bless our towns and keep peace and prosperity here. Instead of becoming negative like everyone around us, why don’t we set an example by speaking good things about our community? If you’re worried about the conditions for local businesses – pray for them. If you are worried about kids and young people – pray for them. I know lots of people who may not go to church but they say that they do pray. I believe that prayer is something most people agree with and can relate to. I encourage you to give it a try.

For any catch-up matches there is a court available at Glasshouse Primary School between 3.30pm and 5.30pm every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, and these matches need to be arranged by the players. Contributed by Sue Greentree G’day readers, on Thursday, May 21 the ladies hosted the Men’s Invitation Day. We played a Tiger Ball Stableford with a field of 108 competing for trophies donated by J. Balfe, P. Chapman, D. Flint and F. Raven. The worthy winners were J. Mossop and K. Moffat with 75 points. 1st Runners-up were L. Wallace and D. Deeks with 72 points and 2nd Runners-up were W. and
Silver for local strongman Beerburrum Powerlifter Tim O'Shea, 37, competed in the GPC Powerlifting Nationals on the Gold Coast last Tuesday, taking home a silver medal in the 140kg division. To place second he squatted 340kg, bench pressed 220kg and deadlifted 300kg. Tim's arch nemesis John Sheridan from Canberra squatted 410kg, putting an obscene 30kg on the national record. Tim only squatted 340kg, the 70kg deficit was too much to catch, although on his final deadlift Tim gave 322.5kg a red hot go for the win, but missed it on lockout. "It it was not the win I was after, but second place at the Nations is still something I am proud of," he said. “It was great to be part of such a close meet, even if I was not to come away with the Gold this time." . Next comp for Tim will be round two of the QLD Strongman Series in June, and then he'll be competing in round three of the QLD Strongman

Toad sounds Bobby was sitting on the porch talking to his grandpa when he innocently asked, “grandpa, do you know how to make animal sounds?” “I sure do,” grandpa replied. “What sort of animal sound would you like to hear?” “How about a toad? Do you know how to sound like a toad?” “Sure,” said grandpa, cupping his hand to his mouth,
“croaaak croaaak, how did you like that?!” “Yipee!” screamed Bobby jumping up and down, “we are going to Miami!” “Huh?” questioned grandpa. “Why’s that?” “Because grandma said so,” Bobby patiently explained, “she said that after you croak we’ll all go to Miami!” Submitted by Margaret, Glass House Mountains
Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclarvoyant.com Week beginning 27/05/2015 GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Remember that Mercury is going retrograde in Gemini through to July 1. Conversations may be only superficial. During this retrograde time, there is much lack of focus, meaningless and confused chatter. Best to discover satisfaction from regular, truthful conversations. CANCER June 22 – July 22 With Venus being in your sign from May 19 to August 13, there is a positive need for the reassurance of love and loyalty between family members. It’s a time for relating compassionately with family and close friends. There is a need to try and get away and take a break. LEO July 23 – August 22 The retrograde energy of Saturn has probably made you feel guilty, or there is too much on your plate. This is not the week to neglect an important task. As you head towards the end of this month, confidential, financial and intimate discussions may have confused chatter. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Mid week is better for you than last Monday, under a void of course Moon. If you feel like your bills are being overcharged, the energies of retrograde Mercury make it a good time to ring up any supplier who you may feel is doing you wrong. Avoid stress as it may affect back pains.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The best way to glide through this last week of the month is to take a break from all the confused chatter and stick with the ability to think clearly and plan projects that will take place after July 1. Focus on some exotic travel vacation even if it’s only in your mind as stimulation. PISCES February 20 – March 20 As the month winds itself down see if you can find time by yourself to also wind down. By the weekend you may show off your talents when you are around your loved ones. This is a period for an honest evaluation of what you have been doing. Stay objective and realistic. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Unstable trends in professional relationships, early in the week, may have put you in the middle of some misguided trouble. Don’t get lost on a wild goose chase. For pure enjoyment soak up some family warmth and some good evening entertainment. Some congenial action now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Keep your lines of communication open, especially this weekend, and you should be ok. With Venus opposed by Pluto, and challenged by Uranus, someone may be trying to impose his or her will through manipulation or intimidation. Try not to engage in these struggles. Be focused.

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The Moon ballet-dances through the sign of Libra, Thursday and Friday, before moving into the sign of Scorpio. The weekend has an urge to explore a deeper way of seeing life moving into a more dynamic, explosive dance routine where your personality resonates with life force. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The normal intense nature of a scorpion sees their emphasis change. As Venus moves through the sign of Cancer to August 13 their personality moves more into a subtle pink shade. Instead of pushing boundaries, or pushing ego desires, let others now have some space. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With Mercury in Gemini, but retrograde to July 1, what would be normally an enthusiastic time for all Sagittarians, sees the mind, in fact, too busy focusing on the past. This is a week to avoid appearing selfish in conversation. Neptune is making things murky and not tangible. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Venus now spends a couple of weeks in your opposite sign of Cancer. You can take positive steps towards realising a goal in spite of a possibly uncertain start under a Mercury retrograde energy. Any of your determined efforts will not cut through confusion until mid-July.
