Hi Everyone... In this edition we have included a wedding feature. My favourite part of these is having the opportunity to share the story of a local bride and groom and hear from them what made their day so special. This time we have included a story about Jenn Bucher and her husband Cohen Dennis who were married at Bald Knob on a “not so sunny day” last October on a dairy farm with a spectacular view (well it would have been if there wasn’t any fog around). What I loved most about hearing the story from Jenn, is that these details were mentioned in passing, and in no way took anything away from her perfect day – the day she got to marry the love of her life and her best friend! And that seems like a great idea, going by another of the stories we featured about Maleny couple Brenda and Reg Bolton who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next month. They reckon that marrying your best friend is a great basis for an enduring marriage!

Cover Story Club hosts canine capers By Lea Parkes Continued from page 1. Previously the clubhouse was more appropriately described as a ‘shed’ mostly used for storage. However now with work undertaken to line the walls and ceiling, the addition of a remote control opening door, along with the installation of shelving and cupboards and a fresh coat of paint as well as an extension of the outdoor covered area at the front, the facility has been transformed. Local carpenter Christopher Casey, who completed the carpentry work, was there on the day with his family, along with Councillor Rick Baberowski, as Sunshine Coast Council had provided some of the funding required for the project. The event kicked of what is planned to be a big year for the club who are really looking forward to their upcoming Show Weekend to be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21, where as usual the community are invited along to come and take a look at all of the dogs on show. This year however, the event has been arranged to coincide with some some extraordinary dog events that are sure to impress all types of dog lovers. They will be hosting a weekend of dog sports competitions, with a Flyball competition on Saturday and, for the first time in Queensland, an UpDog Challenge competition on Sunday. Some readers may already be familiar with Flyball which is a relay race between two teams of four dogs. Each dog must jump over four hurdles, retrieve a ball by triggering a Flyball box pedal and then return over the hurdles to the start line, where the next dog in the
team eagerly awaits. The first team to get all four dogs to finish the course is the winner. The UpDog Challenge is a series of canine discbased games which are all about having fun. No matter the breed, type, size or shape, any dog can compete and can achieve every time they take the field. Some of the games are a hybrid of dog sports and others are traditional disc dog games. The events are being run by ‘Orange Krush’ a dog sport team whose members come from all over South East Queensland and who are based just south of Glasshouse Country at the Elimbah Sportsground. After 15 years’ experience in Flyball spanning Australia and North America, Tim and Jo Slade created Orange Krush as an all-round dog sports club. Tim said in their first year, they were proud to be awarded the Australian Flyball Association’s ‘Little Springer Award’, as the AFA’s Novice Club of the Year, as well as achieving the Division 2 National Champion title and the Maggie Trophy. In November 2017, Orange Krush appeared at the inaugural Brisbane Dog Lovers’ Show at RNA, where their talented and athletic dogs demonstrated the UpDog Challenge to the crowds over the two-day event. The Kennel Club are looking forward to their upcoming dog show weekend, and can’t wait to give our local community the opportunity to see these ‘dog sports’ up close. Keep an eye out for more information about the big weekend in upcoming editions of GC&M News.

Racing towards an international title By Sonia Clark Beerwah local John Hunt is a highly determined individual who doesn’t let his disability get in the way of his ambitions. John competed in the VAF V1 Outrigger Canoe Championships held at Lake Kawana earlier this month, winning Gold and Silver in his class which qualifies him to represent Australia at the IVAF VA-A World Championship to be held in Tahiti in mid-July. A paraplegic since 1995, John has since owned and operated his own (specially modified) truck and trailer company for 13 years, been a public speaker on disability issues and has recently retrained to be a disability support worker focusing on advocacy work. He is now in his fourth year of training and competing in the outrigger canoe sport with a number of races and successful achievements behind him. In his adaptive class, John has previously competed and been placed in national titles and was ranked fifth place in previous world titles. Since then he has upped his training and feels that he is in a much stronger position to tackle a better placing if he is able to attend the International Championships later this year. “I love being out on the water – can’t get enough of it! I’ve been training at least four times a week in the lead up to the national titles and have seen a real improvement which should see results if

Although John competes in an adaptive class, he also participates in ‘all abilities’ challenges. He is currently training to participate in the upcoming 24km Sydney Harbour Challenge where he will be part of a six person mixed abilities crew. John is now looking for sponsors to help him cover costs so that he can pay for his travel and accommodation to get to Tahiti for the 2018 World Championships. He is currently looking to set up a go-fund me page to support his cause. In the meantime, if you would like to help sponsor John please contact him on 0402 392 607 or at johnnystransport69@yahoo.com.au.

Say 'No' to cyberbullying Cyber-bullying, online abuse, and cyber-crime were on the agenda at an eSafety Community Meeting in Kawana recently. More than 100 parents, teachers and other community members from across the Sunshine Coast gathered to hear about what they can do to protect themselves and their loved ones online. The session was led by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, and was organised by Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace. Mr Wallace said one in five teenage students experienced cyberbullying in the past 12 months. “Another 17% were exposed to inappropriate content,” he said. “As the recent tragic case of Amy Everett has shown, the consequences for the development and mental health of our young people can be catastrophic. “I have been working closely with the Prime Minister and the eSafety Commissioner to explore what we can do with the major social media companies to improve mental health outcomes for young people. “I wanted to bring some of this work to our local community, and make sure that Sunshine Coast people are as informed and protected as possible,” he said. Attendees heard about the activities and the platforms that are trending among young people in 2018, including live streaming, ‘story’ functions and deletable media.
Attendees learnt about the interactive chat functions imbedded in popular platforms like Xbox or Musical.ly, which parents are often not aware give their children the ability to chat unsupervised to adults and children all over the world. Survey evidence from the eSafety Commissioner suggests that of the 55,400 school age children on the Sunshine Coast 6,300 have suffered from cyberbullying in the past 12 months, while a further 6,400 have been exposed to inappropriate content. Ms Inman Grant said there were a range of benefits to the internet and a range of harms. “What we want parents and grandparents on the Sunshine Coast to understand is what are the risks, how do they mitigate those and how do they maximise the benefits,” she said. “Parents and grandparents are the front line of defence. There are resources available for parents, young people and teachers at www.esafety.gov.au, but ultimately if we want to make a difference this needs to be part of the everyday curriculum. “From when we first give children access to the online world, we need to start talking to them about the digital dos and don’ts, rights and responsibilities and how they develop the resilience and critical thinking skills they need to be good digital citizens,” she said. Parents and grandparents at the forum learnt about the importance of creating a technology checklist when introducing new technology into

Protective behaviours and strategies for children were addressed, such as encouraging communication, building resilience and empathy with others and closely monitoring use. Finally the cyberbullying and abuse reporting process was explained, including the powerful role the eSafety Commissioner can have. Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace last week met up with some of the recipients of funding from the most recent round of grants from the Stronger Communities Program. In total $150,000 was allocated to organisations in Andrew’s electorate including almost $60,000 for projects in Glasshouse Country and Maleny. Andrew said the Sunshine Coast is a tight knit community which relies heavily upon volunteerism. “If we did not have volunteerism here on the Coast, imagine how much more we would all be paying in taxes and how much poorer our community life would be. “The Stronger Communities Program is recognition of the great work that these groups do in the community,” he said.

NBN tower plans raise plenty of concerns DENTURE CLINIC By Greg Brown At the conclusion of the development application submission period for the six local NBN fixed wireless microwave tower proposals, Sunshine Coast Council received an impressive total of 731 submissions. Of these, only two submissions were in support of the towers, with 729 being opposed. And a reasonable number of those were from more than one person per submission, meaning that the objections reflect the collective voice of possibly over 1,000 concerned residents. The Peachester tower (Old Peachester Road, Peachester – MCU17/2007) gained by far the most submissions, with 275 (274 against, 1 for). The tower at 89 Sinclairs Lane, Balmoral Ridge (MCU17/2177) attracted 194 submissions, all against the proposal. Even the small hamlet of Conondale rose to the occasion, with a total of 181 submissions lodged (180 against, 1 for) in response to the tower proposal at 127 Appaloosa Drive, Conondale (MCU17/2006). The Burgess Avenue, Maleny (MCU17/2005) proposal roused 73 submissions (73 against, 0 for); 75 Link Road, Glass House Mountains (MCU17/2004) five submissions, all being against; and 54 Red Road, Beerburrum (MCU17/2002) had three submissions, again all being against the tower at that site. A desire for better alternatives to the wireless towers was evident, with some going to the expense of hiring legal advice to formulate their arguments against the contents of the applications.
Many who commented on the Sinclairs Lane tower submitted a privately commissioned town planning report contradicting the assertions made by NBN. Many arguments against the towers centred on them not meeting the planning scheme requirements for such facilities, as well as concerns regarding what those people consider to be potential health and safety issues of electromagnetic radiation frequencies flooding the landscape from the towers. The two supporters argued that the developments would enhance their lives and that of the local communities. One supporter commented that the tower has been unnecessarily delayed for too long and can’t arrive soon enough. “The inclusion of Optus mobile phone facilities co-locating on this tower makes this development all the more important. Mobile phone reception around my location has always been marginal. This will provide reliable reception and services important to homes and businesses.” The other pro-tower submission stressed the benefits the technology would bring. “The access to reliable telecommunications will ensure my family is able to further our education, business and family obligations with the safety and convenience that others in the region take for granted.” Sunshine Coast Council development branch officers now assess the applications, giving due consideration to the public submissions, and make their recommendations.

Thanks to our past President Spencer Shaw for the last four years of commitment to Maleny businesses and also our community and environment. Don’t fret though; he’s still a member of the Executive Committee and has stepped into the role of Vice President. This year we also saw a change in our Treasurer, Jenn Bucher from Maleny Cheese has done an amazing job in this role and now hands it over to Alan Marchant from MCU and moves across onto the committee. Karen Shaw from Forest Heart Nursery has remained on as Secretary… thank goodness, we all say with a sigh of relief, and Deborah Hammond from Maleny Optical and Lea Parkes from Glasshouse Country & Maleny News will be continuing on as committee members. We’ve had many questions regarding the Sunshine Coast Council’s inaccurate map of Maleny’s commercial precinct’s regulated parking advertised in Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. Maleny Commerce does support regulated parking in Maleny’s commercial precinct, which includes not only timed parking (to facilitate turnover in high use areas, such as Maple Street), but also allday parking, emergency access, no parking areas (yellow lines) and disabled parking. The Council has since advertised an update in
the paper on February 7. The Editor Lea also summed it up with her story on page 3 of that paper. You can view both in the paper’s archives on-line. Furthermore, we have requested Council supply us with a colour coded map to easily and quickly identify the parking regulations and asked Council to advertise. The Committee has a full work schedule this year with some exciting goals, one of them being the creation of a Heritage Business Building Trail in the CBD. Gathering and sharing with the community and visitors about the architectural history of our town. There are some real surprises! Last week our Vice President, Spencer Shaw represented Maleny Commerce at the first of Andrew Powell's Glassies Awards co-ordinating meetings, along with other Chamber Presidents. Next month’s breakfast meeting will be held on Tuesday March 13 at the Orangery and we welcome members and visitors to attend. Our special guest will be our Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, who will kick of the 2018 Glassies Awards. Closer to that date you will be able to organise tickets from our website: www.malenycommerce.org.au.

Community News Lions – more than just a humble barbeque Lions Australia is Australia’s largest service organisation. Since the first club was formed in Australia 70 years ago it has grown dramatically in size and impact with over 1,300 clubs and 30,000 members giving back through an array of community-based programs and initiatives. The organisation has a longstanding reputation for serving some of Australia’s best sausage sizzles. Whilst very proud to serve great barbeques, this Lions Awareness Day local Lions are reminding Australians that they serve much more than sausage sandwiches and raffles. Nationally, helping cure childhood cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, supporting people with hearing, vision and mobility problems, providing disaster relief and making positive change in local communities, Lions are on a mission to make the world a better place. Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club President Colin Sinclair says he is excited to celebrate Lions Awareness Day with the local community. “Lions has been operating in Maleny and on the Range for 35 years now and have made a big difference to many lives over this time,” Colin says. “It’s been a big year for us at Lions and you see us or our work, everywhere. This would not have been possible without the incredible hard work and dedication from our Lions members as well as support from our local community. “We thank everyone for that support and encourage local residents to find out how they can get involved and help make a difference.”
‘Take a Break’ Playgroup
Lions Awareness Day will be held this Saturday, March 3. Lions are friends, family and neighbours who share a core belief: community is what we make it. Within the Glasshouse Country & Maleny area there are three separate Lions group, these are the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club, the Beerwah Lions Club and the more recently formed Mooloolah Valley Lions Club. Contributed by Diane Gudgeon We would like to share with the readers of GC&M News details about the ‘Take a Break’ Playgroup that meets each Wednesday morning (during the school term) at the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church in Twin Peaks Drive, Beerwah. We would like to invite those who haven’t come along to our fun, loving playgroup previously to come and have a look at how we work. There are six of us, all grandparents, who enjoy running the playgroup. We think that letting the children know how much we value them and that we love being with them and their mums and/or dads, is the best way to run our playgroup. Our activities include playdough with Ethel, craft with Elaine, puzzles with Keith and Doris, story time with Diane, and trolley time with Kevin ends the morning. Morning tea is at 10am where we serve lovely fresh fruits and assorted yummies provided by the mums. There is a bottomless urn of hot water for as many cups of coffee or tea as you might need. There is no fee required and we start at 9am and go through until 11am. There is a large assortment of toys to challenge the children, and sharing is, of course, required. We close for each of the school holiday periods, then come back rested and ready for fun. So please come along and see what a great time we have. God bless you all.
URGENT APPEAL TO THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY IN GLASS HOUSE MOUNTAINS, BEERWAH AND LANDSBOROUGH Did you know that the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce competed for a government grant and organised the installation of CCTV cameras to support the safety and security of the three Hinterland business communities? There is a total of 32 cameras installed in various carefully-selected locations with Landsborough hosting nine cameras, Beerwah 13 cameras and Glass House 10 cameras.
It is always quite disappointing to be asked by some local business owners: What does the Chamber do for me? What benefit do I get from joining the Chamber? Well, we hope that the above paragraphs answer that!
Since the commencement of this initiative police statistics have proven that the cameras make businesses more secure; vandalism and break-ins have almost stopped. The police also have told us that several disturbances expect to be resolved because of the footage obtained from the cameras.
The Chamber does not have the financial means to continue paying for the security in the business centres of our townships without the support of the businesses that are directly impacted. Our business community must band together through membership in the Glasshouse Country Chamber. This will support the maintenance and upkeep of the cameras. Without the help of the business community this entire initiative is in jeopardy.
These cameras need to be serviced and maintained regularly. And yes, you are correct, the business members who are part of the Chamber foot this bill and spend more than $6,000 each year to service and maintain the cameras. All money spent on supporting your business and community safety is paid for by our membership fees. The Chamber does not have any additional income source.
The Chamber is seeking that all businesses in Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough take up membership before the end of March. Should our membership base be insufficient to manage these costs the Chamber will have no other option than to cancel the current service contract for the CCTV system in April. This means businesses will need to individually fund their own CCTV requirements.
Our few members pay for the safety of the entire business community and
it is not sustainable or fair!
If you have an ABN, you can join the Chamber. Go online at www.glasshousecountrychamber.com.au and complete the application form. Membership fee is $150 per year, invoiced in May. For any newcomers, we offer half membership ($75) until the end of this financial year.

Beerwah CWA
Beerwah Lions Club commenced the New Year with a well-attended dinner meeting recently at Club Glass House. Guest speaker for the evening was Geoff Clements from Life Flight, formerly known as Care Flight. Geoff spoke of the enormous cost involved with maintaining and running a fleet of helicopters, and the importance of community support . Life Flight does much in the community, from hospital transfers for seriously ill patients, to rescues and attending road crashes. The individual helicopters are so well equipped that they could serve as emergency wards. Geoff explained that the choppers were crewed by highly skilled pilots and paramedics. The meeting proved a milestone for Lion Trish Cashin, when she was presented with her two year membership pin.
Contributed by Deb Ives As the Beerwah CWA enters its 71st year of service, you are all invited to come along on Monday March 5 to the CWA rooms on Simpson Street to meet the current committee and join in our fun. The doors are open at 9.30am for a cuppa and the meeting commences at 10am. No need to RSVP, please feel free to come along. If you have any questions please call Meg on 0408 276 571. This year sees the return of four Art & Craft Markets for the Beerwah CWA, starting on March 24 with an Easter-themed market. Standard stall sites are $20, and bookings can be made by emailing qcwabeerwah@ gmail.com. Preference is given to local and handcrafted items.

From Patricia, Amanda and Staff at Beerwah Library
New look on the way
Libraries are increasingly popular social spaces where people come to learn, work and play. To meet changing dynamics and community needs Beerwah Library will undergo a refurbishment during March. The new look keeps pace with library trends and will also better capture Beerwah’s local landscape by integrating local environmental themes and colour palettes. The library will be closed from Saturday March 3 and is scheduled to reopen Monday March 19. During this time, a pop-up library will operate 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday in Beerwah Community Hall, located to the left of the library. Customers can return items, collect reservations, borrow from a reduced collection, read newspapers and access Wi-Fi at the pop-up library. Staff are looking forward to welcoming everyone into the new space. For
more details head to council’s library website. Booked in! The library booking system has been upgraded. Now when you book library events you’ll be asked to set up an account. It does look a bit different to what you may be used to, but it’s easy to use and if you have any questions please ask our friendly staff. GoChips are here If you love the library DVD collection then you will also love our newest addition – the GoChip. What is it? GoChip is a device that allows you to view movies or TV series on your smart phone or tablet. Each GoChip has a selection of content. Choose a series or a selection of movies. The GoChip will keep you going for a weekend of avid viewing and allows up to eight devices to connect simultaneously. Intrigued? Visit Beerwah and Maleny libraries today.

POLICE BEAT Blue Light Dance Party - We are back again for another year. These events are a great night out for the kids in a well supervised environment. Our first event of the year is on this Friday, March 2, at 7pm at the Beerwah Community Hall, next to the library. This year we will be holding five events, one each alternate month. Entry is $10 with discounts available for families with more than one child attending, please ask at the door. Once again our amazing sponsors have come on board with some great door prizes and I’m looking forward to another big year for Beerwah Blue Light. Stealing offences - There has been a recent spike in the theft from, and damage to, vehicles and equipment at the forestry office at Beerburrum. Various electronic items have been taken or destroyed and fuel has been taken. Further security measures are being initiated, however if you have any information about these incidents please contact either Beerwah Police on 5436 5222 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online. There have also been several incidents of vehicles being entered and items stolen throughout
the division. The majority of the vehicles were not secured making them easy targets for opportunistic offenders. A number of vehicles that have been stolen have also been left unsecured, with keys either in the vehicle or nearby. I’m sure I sound like a broken record but I can’t say it enough: lock your car, secure your keys inside the house, preferably not on display and don’t leave valuable items in your vehicle. Don’t be an easy target! Summer driving conditions - With our usual Sunshine Coast summer weather conditions well and truly upon us, I just want to give a quick reminder to drive to the conditions. Roads that have been heated up for days become extremely slippery when it begins to rain. It is important to be aware of your vehicle, how it handles in different conditions and to check tyres and brakes. We see a lot of minor traffic incidents in these conditions often involving less experienced drivers, unfortunately the difference between a minor accident and a major one is often only luck.

You Said It Collaborative planning to deliver safe walking trail
Maleny Golf Club advised GC&M News that they have collaborated with Sunshine Coast Council officers to ensure the safety of walkers using the Maleny Precinct walking trail when the three new holes south of the trail are brought into play. Maleny Golf Club President Max Whitten said consideration of the safety of walkers had been paramount in the design of the Maleny trail network and golf course. “The Golf Club is totally committed to providing a safe environment for walkers, as well as sweeping vistas across the picturesque golf course and rehabilitated wetlands,” Dr Whitten said. Dr Whitten noted that there were many examples in Australia and around the world where golfers and walkers shared public space including the home of golf, St Andrews in Scotland. “The safety concerns here are also not dissimilar to some arising at the Maleny Showgrounds where walkers and campers share space with cricket, soccer, equestrian pursuits and dogs-off-leash. Common sense and goodwill make it work.” Dr Whitten said the Council had recently relocated a seat and section of the trail to move it further away from the sixth green as part of agreed actions by the Maleny Golf Club and the Council. “Maleny Golf Club is now working through the detailed boundaries of a screening garden to prevent balls from reaching the trail – preparation and planting of which will occur shortly,” Dr Whitten said. “As the plants will not provide an immediate barrier, the Maleny Golf Club is also investigating the installation of a physical barrier to provide the required safety.” The Maleny Golf Club has indicated on numerous occasions to council a willingness to arrange site visits and work with community representatives who may have concerns with aspects of the golf course design and operations.

Off to court again for many… who knows what may happen this time with the potential for others to join the fray? Maybe NBN might get the message to redesign its program and use fibre. Towerless NBN for Maleny and the Hinterland please. Jim Straker Reesville
Local family history
I want to say thank you for the good times I was able to enjoy in Maleny and I send lovely greetings from cold Germany to sunny Australia. I want to say thank you for the many friendly words and conversations I had with foreign people who I met. Thanks to the lovely friends Bill and Nikki in Witta – our meetings were always very nice. Thank you to the neighbours Julie and Alex, who were very patient with me and my terrible English knowledge. Greetings to Pat and her husband, who looked after me so well at the Christmas concert in the RSL Hall and in the theatre at the showgrounds. Greetings to Maggie and everyone who welcomed me so nicely in the Presbyterian Church in Maleny. Greetings to Fung and Kevin and kids, and to Rebecca, Allen and Stephen, the colleagues from the bakery. Thanks also to Barbara and Klaus from King Ludwig’s, we had a lot of fun. And a special thank you goes to my brother, Jochen, who organised so much and made my trip to Australia a real dream vacation, I wish everyone a good time and a good health condition for the year 2018. With love, Barbara From the far away Essen/Germany
The future is fibre, not towers
With the number of objections to NBN’s proposed microwave towers now on the table, this will put serious pressure on Sunshine Coast Council to stick with their Planning Scheme and knock them back.

As a resident of Glass House Mountains (40 years) I, like every ratepayer, pays a Heritage levy in my rates. My expectation would be it is spent on ‘Heritage’. Well, not so fast! In May last year I wrote to Councillor Rick Baberowski with a suggestion of honouring the Gilvear Family, who are my great grandparents, by naming a park in their honour. A brief outline of this their history is that they migrated from Scotland in the early 1900s and took up farming here. They had ten children, six boys and four girls. All the brothers and my great grandfather, Thomas Gilvear Senior, enlisted during WW1 and sadly three of them did not return. Such was the empathy of the local residents they commissioned a brooch containing the colours of the three brothers’ battalions to be presented to their mother Christina. (You can Google Gilvear Family and all the story is detailed there). Their sacrifice was honoured in the Archives in Canberra, displaying the story, for a three month period. But it seems apparent this does not qualify for Heritage recognition by the council. Part of the response letter I finally received after more than six months was for me to do which was 1. To find a park or piece of bushland that's not named, and gather community support for that park/land to be named appropriately. 2. Connect with a local group to support your proposal. 3. Apply for a grant or pay for it myself. I have been unable to speak to Mr Baberowski as his staff sent my letter to the Heritage department. I can apparently approach him when I've come up with a plan! And here's me thinking that the Council would be interested in our early history. Brenda Briese Glass House Mountains

A blow to free speech
Re Electoral Legislation Amendment (Electoral Funding and Disclosure Reform) Bill 2017: In regards to its effects on important not-for-profit advocacy groups, this Bill smacks of a blow to free speech and a grasp for totalitarian power by the LNP. Grassroots organisations and protest groups are an essential part of democracy; impeding their ability to function effectively by introducing strangling legislation is undemocratic and immoral. If a party has to resort to these kinds of dirty, underhand tactics to keep its government in power, rather than relying on a fair and democratic vote from a society in which all individuals and peaceful organisations can communicate with each other and address the public freely, then that party does not deserve to be running the country. Mariko McConnell Mapleton
Radio frequency and microwaves
I note with interest a letter from NBN rep Ryan Williams trying out radiofrequency definitions. The idea that all radio frequencies (RF) are just the same is a common misconception. Reality is somewhat different. How does it work? The Megahertz (MHz) is a unit of electromagnetic waves equal to a million hertz (1,000,000 Hz). Other frequency units are the Kilohertz (kHz), equal to 1,000 Hz, and the Gigahertz (GHz), equal to 1,000,000,000 Hz. Microwaves are EM radiation with wavelengths from 1 metre to 1 millimeter; with frequencies between 300 MHz (100cm) and 300 GHz (0.1cm). These smaller wavelengths can interfere with human cell tissue.
The argument that all RF is the same, no matter what, is misleading. NBN towers, WiFi home and public equipment, and microwave ovens all use or broadcast in the 2.3Ghz to 2.4Ghz frequency. This is the microwave band frequency that cooks food. We are all familiar with it. Back in 1976 the US Army Medical Agency published a study on the Biological Effects of Microwave Radiation (39 pages). The purpose of the study was to find all international data to that date on scientific, medical and intelligence research on microwave EMR in the 300Mhz - 300Ghz range. The report stated that "Personnel exposed to microwave radiation below thermal levels experience more neurological, cardiovascular and hemodynamic (blood) disturbances than their unexposed counterparts", (p.6), "subjects exposed to microwave radiation exhibited a variety of neorasthenic (nervous system) disorders", (p.8). On the brain - "EM radiation has been found to produce disturbances in carbohydrate energy and nitrogen mechanisms in the brain, liver and muscles", (p.12). After 1976 over 1,100 studies have shown some dangers from exposure to microwave radiation (www.justproveit.net/studies ). These studies are out-dating the Australian APANSA standards to the extent that there are now serious concerns among many scientists that microwaves can be harmful to human health. It’s good to clarify the 'radio-frequency' terminology. Richard Giles Conondale
Beerwah and District RSL
Beerwah and District RSL recently held their Annual General Meeting at the club room at the Beerwah Sportsgrounds. All positions were declared vacant, and those elected were: President John Nisbett, Treasurer Lee Christie and Secretary Libby Brown. Ms Brown is also the Welfare Officer. The club members are hard at work planning for the upcoming Anzac Day commemorations. We will be having a Dawn Service and a main service. The focus of both will be at the Cenotaph in Turner Park (behind the library). We will be selling badges and memorabilia and look forward to ongoing community support for our fundraising efforts. Further details will be advised as they come to hand. The RSL continues to support veterans and their families who are in need in any way. If there are any individuals within the community who are struggling and need assistance, our Welfare Officer is available to coordinate and provide access to resources that are available to them and their families.

Living - Arts Not your average exhibition
Maleny Art Direct’s upcoming art exhibition ‘He Drew a Moon on His Vanished Heart’ will feature the dramatic work of local artist and art therapist Nicky Carey. Joanne Howard from Maleny Art Direct said: “Nicky is not what you would describe as the average artist and what we have planned will not be the average art exhibition. “Nicky, who is such an interesting person, will be showcasing a collection of his latest original paintings and original etching prints. “This colourful whimsical presentation of work is matched only by his personality,” Joanne said. Nicky studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dublin, Ireland and had always been interested in Creative Arts as a therapeutic tool. On moving to Australia he has studied Transpersonal Art Therapy, Guided Drawing and more recently completed a Graduate Certificate in ‘Work at the Clayfield Therapy’. This is a unique form of Sensorimotor Therapy that focuses on the reconciliation of emotions, feelings, thoughts and body sensations, helping those who are experiencing trauma and post trauma issues to live a healthier more meaningful life. Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Nicky brings a wealth of knowledge from his lived experience, creativity and therapeutic skills to this current exhibition. The work culminates in hope, humour, curiosity, sadness and joy, darkness and light. The exhibition will be opened this Saturday, March 3, at 5pm at Maleny Art Direct in Maple Street, next door to Rosetta Books.
Neville Field - artist
The work of local Glass House Mountains artist Neville Field is featured in a new self-titled exhibition ‘Neville Field – Artist’, currently on display at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah. Neville’s art is exhibited nationally and internationally and this current exhibition runs from February 25 until April 29 with an opening night event scheduled for this Friday, March 2, at 6.30pm. ‘Neville Field – Artist’ will show examples of all of Neville’s techniques and feature his wide range of subject matter. His preferred art medium is printmaking in its various forms however his work can utilise a range of media – choosing that which seems appropriate at the time. His artwork includes printmaking, painting, drawing, and mixed media. Neville says: “My art is a continuous exploration of the world around me. In nature I find an interesting and complex hierarchy of growth, death and decay with the dominant exploiting the weak; a bit like business and politics! Colour can be both exciting and expressive while shape and form may not immediately be obvious. Hurriedly scratched marks, frantically chase my imagination as I search for answers to sparks of ideas, or else I just translate a feeling into an image.” He also paints and makes Artists’ Books. Neville studied a BA in Visual Art at UNENR in Lismore, NSW, before moving to Alice Springs where he lived for 15 years. He was greatly influenced by Indigenous artists he worked with and by the surrounding desert which impacted his palette while he studied a Masters in Printmaking from SCU. He explains: “As the idea is developed, the choice of medium becomes apparent… It all starts with a drawing. Drawing for me is a means of toying with ideas. It allows me to imagine concepts and explore specks of notions and layouts, or trains of thought and the use of space relationships.” The exhibition at Vianta will be ‘refreshed’ on the weekend of March 31-April 1 allowing purchased works to be collected if required. To book a table at the opening night contact Steve on 0431 730 275. For more information on hanging an exhibition at Vianta, email Michele at reddoorart@bigpond.com or text at 0412 936 361.

with the Beerwah Grafx Group by Margaret Thompson The all-important feature of this image is the lighting. It has been lit to show the clean lines of the little fisherman, a figure six inches tall. When photographing such objects it is necessary to maintain a believable perspective, therefore, having the camera lens at eyelevel has helped to achieve this. Photography is very much part of the creative process as it allows the artist to critique the work in progress as was the case with this polymer clay figure. Palmwoods Bowls Club – Sunshine Coast’s best kept secret! Nestled in the beautiful Hinterland town of Palmwoods, the historic Palmwoods Bowls Club is one of the Sunshine Coast’s best kept venue secrets. Surrounded by beautiful lush rainforest complete with a picturesque duck pond and a spacious dining and entertainment areas – this hidden gem offers guests a great option for all types of functions, in particular weddings. Palmwoods Bowls Club provided the perfect setting for the wedding of Krystle and Paul Backhaus. The couple had been together for 14 years when they were planning their wedding, and were searching for a relaxed yet fun local venue to hold their special day. With both the bride and groom coming from large families, and wanting to include their friends as part of the celebration, they were looking at a substantial guest list and so they needed a venue that could cater for a large number of guests as well as being within their budget. Krystle said that they drove by the Palmwoods Bowls Club and saw the sign advertising functions, so they arranged for a meeting to check the place out, and they were so glad they did! “As we entered the Bowls Club and made our way to the back deck I just fell in love with the place,” she said. “The beautiful backdrop of the gardens and the covered outdoor deck was absolutely beautiful and exactly where I wanted to celebrate on our wedding day! “The Functions team showed us photos of previous weddings they had catered for and were happy to offer advice and suggestions.
“They were so accommodating with all of our wishes, we brought in most of our own decorations for the tables and when I showed the team photos of my ideas they were more than happy – actually very excited, to put this all together for us on the day,” said Krystle. The couple appreciated having the opportunity to sit down with the chef who helped to design a menu to suit their budget, while offering plenty of options to choose from. The couple decided to add an option for guests to play bowls before the wedding party arrived and the overwhelming response from their guests was that they all had so much fun! Krystle said the only thing she was disappointed with was that she didn’t get a chance to head onto the bowling green in her wedding dress, and the fact that midnight came way too quickly. “Music, drinks, fun and laughter were shared with our family and friends and we thank the venue staff for making our day one we will never forget,” Krystle said.
If you haven’t been to an event at the Palmwoods Bowls Club, you too may just find yourself pleasantly surprised by this unique venue, which features both a large dining room and covered deck each accommodating 100 guests comfortably and overlooks two professionally maintained bowling greens with full lighting for night time events. The Club has a fabulous Asian Kitchen Café, as well as a stocked sports bar, complete with pool table and its own courtesy bus. Conveniently located just minutes off the Bruce Highway, near the Palmwoods train station, the venue boasts plenty of off-street parking and the functions team genuinely love organising weddings, social and corporate events. Known for the quality and variety of their catered events, whether a bowling themed or private function, the warmth and friendliness of the functions and Club team is second to none, guaranteed to make wonderful memories of your special occasion.

Wedding Guide ‘Oh, what a day’
When Jennepher Bucher and Cohen Dennis started planning for their wedding in October last year there were a few things that they knew were important. They wanted a lowkey wedding, which would be memorable for them and those closest to them, to share in and enjoy, while keeping the budget realistic. They realised pretty early on in the planning that they wouldn’t possibly be able to invite everyone that they would have liked to the wedding so they went with the option of a really big engagement party.
By Lea Parkes Jenn said they really appreciated that family friends David and Heather Simpson, whose dairy farm is at Bald Knob, were happy to provide the perfect venue for both the ceremony and reception in their ‘rustic shed’. Did I mention that Jenn’s family are also dairy farmers and own Maleny Cheese? So what could be more fitting for them than an outdoor ceremony with the gentle lowing of cows in the background? For women about to be married, and farmers in general, there is always plenty of interest in weather forecasts, and for this father and daughter the wedding day dawned with mixed blessings. After an extremely long dry spell throughout early and mid-2017, it would seem that the drought broke on the morning of October 14, just in time for Jenn and Cohen’s wedding.
However Jenn, who is ever positive, said she couldn’t begrudge her father’s sense of relief at seeing all that beautiful rain falling, and wasn’t rain on your wedding day supposed to bring luck? Well, fortune did smile down on the couple, with the rain stopping around 2pm (an hour before the ceremony) and staying away until the bridal party had their required photo at ‘One Tree Hill’ at Maleny. Jenn reckons her one big indulgence for the wedding was the flowers. She is a real sucker for lovely flowers and she was so happy with the work done by her friend from Wendy's Flowers & Events. “The flowers were just gorgeous on the day, and it was really lovely seeing our guests take home the floral arrangements to enjoy after the wedding as well,” Jenn said.

Wedding Service Listings Talking to Jenn about the day it is really clear that one of the many things that she really loved about the whole experience was being able to work with so many friends and local business people to create exactly what they wanted. Her sister Gillian, who travelled from Switzerland for the wedding, baked over 300 cookies to be used as gifts on the wedding table. A friend who is a business partner at Elizabeth & May Montville made a spectacular cake. Another friend, Doug, was their celebrant and, fortunately for them, theirs was the last wedding he performed before retiring.

Celebrant Deborah Taylor They ended the big day by spending their wedding night at Maleny Tropical Retreat which is also owned by people who have been friends for over 10 years. The ever practical couple returned to work on the Monday, and five weeks later they jetted out to their amazing, two week honeymoon in Hawaii which, judging by the massive amount of Facebook photos they uploaded while they were away, was a great ending to a very special celebration.

Maleny couple about to celebrate golden anniversary Maleny couple Brenda and Reg Bolton will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on March 30 with a special trip to Wanaka, New Zealand to enjoy the iconic international air show – Warbirds Over Wanaka. Originally meeting as young teenagers in the English seaside town of Broadstairs, the couple have maintained a strong friendship based on shared interests and mutual compatibility. All these years later, Reg can still clearly remember the day he first laid eyes on Brenda. He’d moved with his parents down from London and was walking along the beach looking up at the cliffs when he walked up the stairs and saw a perfect apparition walk past – a tall girl with fair hair and freckles and he fell in love instantly! Introduced later by a mutual friend at a “juke box jive”, Reg and Brenda became great friends for a few years first, hanging out at the beach and at “local hops” before sharing their first kiss – and they have been together ever since. Reg proposed to Brenda at the top of the Eiffel Tower and they waited until Brenda turned 21 to be married.

Reg and Brenda on their wedding day Following their church wedding, the couple celebrated their reception at the Broadstairs Hotel located along the cliff where they first met. After many years in the UK, the couple relocated to Japan to work and live in Gifu where they taught English. Sharing a love of motorbikes and fascination for travel, Reg and Brenda have travelled the world and have had numerous adventures together. Leaving Japan in 2004, the couple moved to Australia. Recently the couple have sold their motorbikes to purchase an MG which allows them to pack a picnic hamper and chat while driving as they explore the countryside. Both Reg and Brenda feel very fortunate to have enjoyed a long and happy married life together and when asked what their secret to a happy marriage is, Brenda replied: “We just enjoy being together and have lots in common”, while Reg adds: “We’ve each married our best friend!”

English, maths, play violin!
As if a school day was not jam-packed enough! Now Glenview State School has a Violin Immersion program as part of the daily routine. With a new push to include string instruments in the instrumental program, all Year Three students will be taught the violin. This enables students who may not ordinarily be able to afford private lessons, the opportunity to learn an instrument. Music teacher Chelsea Harry said: “We know what music does for the young learner. "It helps to create a strong network of neural pathways in the brain – developing visual, auditory and spatial processing skills, along with coordination, literacy and memory,” she said. School students can already study wind, brass and percussion, along with guitar and piano. There is certainly a lot going on. Mrs Harry, a former cellist in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, is revelling in the enthusiasm of the children now that there are violins in their hands. The challenge now is how to make music with them!

Introducing Emma Coultis Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre is excited to welcome early childhood teacher Emma Coultis to the team. Emma will lead the Centre’s ‘School Ready room’ Emma Coultis and has taken over this position from long term staff member Silvia Thomas. Sylvia will be staying on at the Centre in a newly created educational leadership position which draws upon her extensive teaching experience and will focus on staff mentorship and educational program development. Emma has always had a strong interest in early childhood education and has nearly eight years childcare experience. She recently completed her four-year Bachelor of Education degree majoring in Early Childhood studies. A mother of one herself, Emma and her family have relocated back to the beautiful Sunshine Coast and her young daughter also attends the Centre. Through her studies and Prep class internship, Emma fully realises the numerous benefits in preparing young children well for school. “I love teaching this age group, and it
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
is wonderful to help them extend their independence and self-reliance skills. We want to prepare them socially and emotionally for school by building their ability and confidence to ensure the easiest transition to big school,” says Emma. In the School Ready room (Kindergarten) children further develop letter and number recognition skills as well as practical skills like writing their name and holding a pencil. Outdoor nature play is always strongly encouraged and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities are really popular - as well as lessons on the interactive ‘smart board’. Emma will continue to work closely with Silvia though she is also keen to bring new ideas and a fresh approach to her teaching. As the area of early childhood teaching continues to evolve, Emma is looking forward to drawing upon the most recent study and research as well as the latest technological advancements to help enhance the learning journey of the children. While she is keen to bring ‘fresh eyes’ to the Centre, Emma will be continuing to base her outlook on the well-established ideals of the Centre where child focussed learning is a priority. “Many of our activities and play ideas are ‘observation based’ – which are directly inspired by the observed interests of the children. This is a key area of the teaching approach here – for example last week a couple of our boys were blowing feathers which led on to a class science unit discussing how things move - the children loved it!” explains Emma.
Savannah Composting
Emma has been warmly welcomed by both staff members and the Centre families and she is looking forward to getting to know the children individually. She is particularly impressed with the Centre's focus on sustainability and recycling. ‘Upcycled’ compost bins are the newest addition to the Centre’s commitment to achieving these sustainable living goals. Emma is excited to be able to incorporate activities and discussions around what can be composted and the value of composting. Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre offers a quality driven Kindergarten program to help children be ‘school ready’. With the added convenience of providing long day care hours if required, both working and at home parents may be eligible for the government funded Kindergarten program subsidy offered through the Centre. To find out more or for an obligation free tour of the centre, please call 5438 7311, or call in to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

Asthma is described as a long-term lung condition in which the airways in the lungs are sensitive and react quickly to triggers causing a flare-up where the muscle around the airways begin to swell causing narrowing and breathing difficulty. A flare-up can come on slowly over hours or days or very quickly, classifying it as an Asthma Attack. In Australia, over two million people of all ages suffer from Asthma, making 11% of the population. Asthma cannot be cured but can be controlled by following a daily management plan, accurate inhaler technique and an established Asthma Action Plan in the event of a flare-up or attack. Inhalers are commonly used to enable the access of medicine directly to the lungs, however up to 90% of people use their inhalers incorrectly leading to poor symptom control. A simple spacer device provides maximal administration of medicine into the lungs providing better control of symptoms. A spacer is a plastic container with a mouthpiece and a hole for the inhaler on opposite end. Currently, we have a range of spacers on special with a saving of up to $5. See our pharmacist for a free inhaler technique check for better management.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in March
• Wait until the rain eases a bit before giving your gardens a fertiliser boost coming into autumn, or else it’ll just wash away and be wasted. • At the start of the month, put spring flowering bulbs in the fridge veggie crisper and plant out at the end of the month. • If you’re planting seedlings for a spring display, it is timely to watch out for cut worms. This soil-borne pest chews through the seedling stem at ground level. At the first sign, spray with Carbaryl. • Try not to plan any work in the backyard which needs heavy machinery or vehicles, until the soil dries and firms up. Otherwise you risk compacting the ground and churning up soggy soil – not a good practice. • White cedar caterpillars are on the move. Wrap a hessian bag around the trunk and check underneath for the damaging insects as they’ll congregate there during the day. Squash, or spray them with a pyrethrum spray. • Start planting broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower seedlings from mid-March. Watch out for little green caterpillars, as they can destroy your seedlings overnight. Vegetables Plant carrot, leeks, beans, cauliflower, lettuce, silver beet, spring onion, radish, capsicum, cucumber, eggplant, sweet potato, tomato, melons, pumpkin, okra, zucchini, broccoli, kale, cabbage, rocket, beetroot, garlic, celery, coriander, rosemary, fennel, shallots and parsnips. Flowers Plant alyssum, petunia, marigolds, sweet pea, ageratum, aurora daisy, nigella, calendula, cyclamen, delphinium, impatiens, dianthus, salvia, everlasting daisy, forget-me-not, gaillardia, foxglove, linaria, lobelia, lupin, nasturtium, polyanthus, schizanthus, Iceland poppy, primula, snapdragon, cleome, strawflower, verbena, cineraria, phlox, cornflower, pansy, statice, stock and viola.
Backyard wildlife with Spencer Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery
Did you know that it’s not just in the wild places, but in the towns and even busy urban streets, that we can find rare and threatened plants and animals? When establishing Forest Heart Eco-Nursery, Maleny, we found Threetoed Snake-toothed Skinks (Coeranoscincus reticulatus). This amazing skink grows to about 50cm and is distinguished by its colouring (white and brown bands on the juveniles and varying shades of brown to grey on adults) and by its very small limbs which only have three toes on each foot. Counting three toes on these guys is tricky however, as they are so small that a magnifying lens, steady hand, patient skink and a good eye are crucial! This exciting find showed just how resilient some of our native plants and animals are, when we provide them with the connectivity to move through the landscape and suitable habitat to live in. In the case of the Three-toed Snake-toothed Skink they a require deep layer of leaf litter to provide them with the humidity, shade, protection and their food sources such as worms, grubs and small insects. The revegetation projects that have returned forest to the banks of the Obi Obi in Maleny have provided both habitat and connectivity for not only the Three-toed Snake-toothed Skink but many other fauna and flora. To create a deep mulch quickly that is beneficial for not only our longnamed lizard, but a whole range of ground dwelling fauna (and all the critters that feed on them) mulch your new plantings with a deep mulch between 100mm and 200mm thick. You can use bale mulch or chip mulch, just use plenty of it. Then make sure there are plenty of fast growing pioneers in your plantings such as Bleeding Heart Homalanthus populifolius, Native Mulberry Pipturus argenteus and Macaranga Macaranga tanarius. Density and diversity in your plantings will enable the development of a mulch layer to feed the soil and save critters such as the Three-toed Snake-toothed skink from a fate worse than death – extinction.

From the churches Can I have your attention please? Isn’t it amazing the certain things in our lives and in our world that capture our attention? How much of your attention is consumed with other people? What they wear, where they go, who they talk to, all seem necessary for us to have an opinion about. Social media for all of its pluses also taught us, maybe even urges us, to share our opinion. The Bible teaches us: (Proverbs 17) “Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.” We can be all too quick to form an opinion and speak to others about others, and that’s not nice. This type of gossip rarely lifts people, instead it brings them down. We are called by God to lift others up and spur them onto good things.

Pastor Aaron Jackson Church on the Rise How can we lift others, Pray for them, make room for them, be generous towards them? Discover ways to be a blessing. The Bible tells us to think and speak well of others and to love them. When we do this we honour God through adhering to His word. God actually wants us to be others focused. To love others, be generous, gracious and forgiving causes us to flourish in life. His plan for our lives really is to help us live rich, full lives. I love the thought that our lives are a gift to us, and that we can be a gift to others. Be present, in the moment, and care for one another, instead of using them as fuel for your gossip. “If you didn't see it with your own eyes, or hear it with your own ears, don't invent it with your small mind and share it with your big mouth!” – Anonymous. Sport The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On Sunday there was a six-ball game between Kath Smith, Frances and Ken. Frances played well and made a six break, the largest break of the game. She duly recorded her break in the ‘break book’ hoping for the prize at the end of the year in divisions 3 and 4. Any break greater than 6 is worth putting in. Don’t forget to have your opponent sign you off on it. The final result for the game was Ken 11, Frances 8, and Kath 2. As players we welcome the return to more benign weather. There was no play this Thursday because of rain. Even Charlie Brown would have climbed down from his pitcher’s mound in the deluge. Pennants are nearly upon us, and practice is imperative. More names are needed on the board for the Bray competition. Apart from the pennants, third and fourth division players might find it fun and fruitful to play in a couple of weekenders. Details of these are in the tournament book in the clubhouse. Draft rules of the proposed ladder competition will soon be circulated. We will discuss them at the March meeting. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.
Peachester’s ‘super fish’ shine Contributed by Jo Atkinson With a team of only five swimmers, Peachester State School students were outnumbered recently at the District swimming carnival but still managed to shine brightly with their amazing efforts and awards! The school placed sixth overall and Sam, Emma, Lily, Keeley and Ruby did us proud. Sam and Emma finished the day as 11-year-old age champions and Sam was awarded the overall boy age champion. Well done to our super swimmers and we wish Sam and Emma the best of luck when they take on students from even bigger schools at the Regional carnival.

District swimmers 2018 Contributed by Michelle Lenz Successful young swimmers from Mooloolah State School, whose times qualified, went off to the District Swimming Carnival held in Beerwah. Glasshouse Country Bowls Club
Maleny Bowls Club
Contributed by David Hayes As most of you are aware there was no social bowls last Wednesday and Thursday because of the rain. I would imagine everyone is very keen to get out there this week and have a game of bowls. Saturday February 24: Hinterland Ladies, Glasshouse 2 vs Nambour away. Due to the wet conditions the game was cancelled. Hinterland Men vs Pomona away, due to the wet conditions Pomona cancelled the game that morning. Premier 7s Division 3: Home against Tewantin Noosa, a credit to all players who played in some difficult conditions. Dean Shaw had a brilliant win in the singles 31-30 after being down by over 10 shots at one stage. Rob Scullion and Mac Townson had a narrow loss in the pairs. The fours went to an extra end after it was 17 all after 21 ends. Unfortunately we couldn’t pull off a win. Premier 7s Division 4 away against Pine Rivers. Always a tough game for teams travelling to Pine Rivers but our team was good enough this time to come home with an overall win. Vic Muscat won his singles match, 31-30. Di Hume and Wendy Platt had a tough day and went down in the pairs. The fours team of Bruce Angus, Simon Richter, Bill Tumbridge and Rodney Sharpe had another smashing win. Well done everyone. Only one more week until Premier 7s is over for 2018. Kerry Capern Day is this Sunday, March 4. Please arrive by 8.30am to pay your entry fee. This day is proudly sponsored by Bill and Lorelle Tumbridge. We will be having raffles after 1pm on the day with prizes for touches in both games. Don’t forget Scroungers this Friday night. Arrive at the club at 6.30pm for a 7pm start, the cost is $10, names can be placed down at the club, all are welcome including non-members.
Contributed by Graeme Glover Sitting writing this in the rain hoping that next week is a week of brilliant sunshine so bowls can be back on the clubs agenda. As a gardener I love the rain, as bowler I don't. Our two big events were washed out with the green on both occasions resembling more of a swimming pool than a bowls rink. Next week we have a big week of bowls with our monthly pairs leading off on Monday. This has a full complement of bowls thanks to our own and visitors really enjoying and supporting this monthly event. Wednesday Barefoot has been a real smash hit in 2018 with at least forty plus bowlers enjoying a fun night out at the club. If you would like to join in, contact the club. All folks are always welcome and a game is guaranteed – $13 for a burger and night of bowls. Friday Scroungers and members' jackpot draw are proving to be a great social occasion for all. The AGM is being held on Saturday at the club. See all details online in the current newsletter. Thank you to all who have served the club well in maintaining excellent governance and a renewal in the interest in using our community facilities. Well done 2017 Board – hope you can all see your way clear to continue doing the good work for the MBC community who I know are truly appreciative of the collective efforts. Our funded development of new bar facilities thanks to Sunshine Coast Council and Gaming Grants will get under way on March 10, with final fit out the week of March 19. Thank you to both of these organisations for supporting us and our community. See you on the green, weather permitting, or at the club.
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Well what a difference a week can make, one week extreme heat, next week extreme rain. All matches were washed out. What will happen this week?
Lessons for Beginners to Advanced
Beerwah Golf Club Men and medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme (in sunny Karumba) Yet again our monthly blue and yellow marker challenge, sponsored by Totalspan Sheds, was disrupted by heavy rain last Wednesday. Only around 50 players braved the damp conditions to hand in soggy scorecards. I don't remember a rundown going to 78 before! One division: 1. Ken Sharp (hcp 19) 70 net. 2. Steve Briggs (21) 72. Rundown: Geoff Tiggs (4) 75, Ross Woodward (20) 76, John Law (27) 77, Jeff Wilson (15) 77, Sonya Kenway (10) 78, and Jim McGrory (19) 78. No NTPs. The rain worsened later in the week and although we had some sun on Saturday the course was deemed unplayable and remained closed.
Maleny Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Oxenham Sunday February 18: The Maleny Golf Club held a 9 Hole Ambrose (2 Player) Competition. First place were Dennis Brown and Eve Beaman with 31.75 nett, runners-up were Niel and Pam Cront with 36.5 nett and third place went to John and Robin Hay with 37.75 nett. Tuesday February 20: There was a Mixed 18 Hole Veterans Single Stableford played with first place going to John Tytherleigh with 41 points on a count-back from runner-up Dan Casey and third place going to Jon Fairman with 39 points on a count-back from Toni Bishop. NTP were 3 - Dan Casey, 12 - Denis O’Neill, 14 - Richard Clayton and Liz Mellish. For more information about the Maleny Golf Club visit www.malenygolfclub.com.

A young couple were on their honeymoon and were staying at a hotel with a large swimming pool. They decided to go for a swim, and the bride donned a new bikini that she had recently purchased. As she swam and splashed around in the pool, she soon discovered that the bikini was too large, and the top and bottom kept coming off. As they were the only ones in the pool, she and her husband would laugh and playfully retrieve
the bikini from the pool's bottom. That evening they dressed for dinner and headed to their hotel's elegant restaurant, where they were seated next to a huge aquarium. Strangely, the aquarium was devoid of any aquatic life. When the bride asked their waiter why the aquarium had no fish in it, he smiled broadly and said, "That's not an aquarium... that's the swimming pool!"

LEO July 23 - August 23 A Full Moon starts this week to bring to a head recent money matters. As March commences, you can walk into the month with luck and gratitude for an addition of new furniture to your home, or your office. You will probably try a different store or restaurant this week. It is also likely that someone will treat you. A juicy ambition arises now! VIRGO August 24 - September 23 Relationships, and the fruits of them, are important now with the planets Mercury, Venus, the Sun and Neptune, in your opposite sign. What a wonderful week you can have under a Virgo Full Moon and expect joyful social experiences. There may even be a meeting with a guru type person! Maybe you make others rich in cosmic terms! LIBRA September 24 - October 23 Your ruling planet, Venus, starts off this week in the sign of Pisces, but moves quickly to Aries. This Full Moon theme would probably make you sleepy, dreamy and totally feel “out of it”. However don’t deplete your energies by forcing yourself forward, just focus on essentials. Perhaps have a health spa massage or even walk a friendly pet. SCORPIO October 24 - November 22 You should feel that there is some luck around the corner as Jupiter is in your sign and even though it will reverse turn by the 8th March, it makes this a time of personal and financial review. When Jupiter goes retrograde you gain clarity on what you want, and how to manage your resources. Embrace a warm emotional flow from recreation now.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21 This Full Moon week falls across your career and home life, putting you in the middle of some urgencies arising in either place. Nevertheless, with planets moving in the mediation sign of Pisces, take a few moments to enjoy life’s finer pleasures and emotional joys. Use any spare energy in sport or athletics as the competition stirs your heart. CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20 Gather your psychic and intuitive energies together, with the Full Moon backing you, this first week of March. Your focus will be on your immediate environment and an artistic strength emerges, especially as the planet Jupiter is in good aspect with Venus, Mercury and the Sun. When Jupiter retrogrades at the end of the week, clean your work area. AQUARIUS January 21 - February 18 You have an eye on your career and gathering energy, and you see that building up to a success. Shortly Mars moves into Capricorn and that, with other planets also influencing, gives you the urge to examine and express your psychology, perhaps releasing pent up feelings. You may be more emotional about money than usual, perhaps in a grateful appreciation. PISCES February 19 - March 20 The week flourishes for you with a Virgo Full Moon bringing dreams and visions to awaken your needs. It would be the beginning of a happy and prosperous month, with so many planets in your rosy sign! Such as, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Neptune and Chiron. Chiron should give you a very special healing treat, which may come through reflexology!

ARIES March 21 - April 20 After the last Eclipse you are now starting new projects and the celestial momentum is strongly moving forward. You may feel a spiritual urge to feel the inner you! This means to take time for meditation. The month looks promising as Venus is your financial planet and enters your sign on March 6. This means financial windfalls now. TAURUS April 21 - May 21 A strong Piscean influence that the planets are dancing to, makes your Taurus soul altruistic and benevolent. You may want to go solo on a private quest. One special friendship is important in the coming month. Your challenge is to merge some good spiritual values with your material ones. Health and energy levels need occasional attention. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 With all the idealistic Piscean influence coming in this week this stirs your professional life and you become very idealistic with important goals to reach. A lot of your attention shifts to your social life – friendships, groups and communal activities. There is a Full Moon pushing your buttons which are associated with your home and career matters. CANCER June 22 - July 22 You will resonate well this week to the nurturing emotional energies of planets moving through Pisces, your fellow water sign. Tune into your intuition and that will bring a happy, prosperous and successful month. Someone has good news to share, possibly travel related to a conference or major environmental work shop. Unusual encounters!
