JUNE 28 2017

Hi Everyone

A

few weeks ago I shared my enthusiasm for getting behind the messages of the ABC’s television series ‘The War on Waste’ and encouraged others to start using travel mugs, keep / enviro cups when purchasing their takeaway coffees. I have been diligently making contact with coffee shops around Glasshouse Country and Maleny but I haven’t yet been able to compile a conclusive list as yet, so I haven’t wanted to print a list in the paper that misses anyone out! My caffeine crazed mind has been really pleased with the response as everyone I have spoken to, emailed, or Facebooked has been really positive about the idea. With some of the businesses even offering a discount / reward to those that do the responsible thing, my focus has been on those businesses people who encourage their customers to 'do the right thing’. This week I will post a list to our Facebook of the businesses that have been in contact who are happy to get behind the initiative and I will keep working through the many, many local coffee shops / cafes and bakeries that supply our caffeine fixes each day. I wonder just how much waste we can reduce with this one small step in our local community? Regards,

We couldn’t fault Kev and his team. They helped fine tune the design, got us better deals with appliances, suggested sensor lighting, organised the electricians and plumbers to fit all the appliances and even went that extra mile to change the front of the dishwasher so it matched the feature cabinets. The team were respectful when working and completely trustworthy when we weren’t around.

Council ditches local bus By Greg Brown The recent Sunshine Coast Council budget for 2017/18 saw a $15 hike in the transport levy which everyone pays in their rates to help offset the costs of providing transport needs to hinterland communities. It now seems that for the privilege of paying more, locals are going to get less... zero if you live in Beerwah. All this comes on top of the levy propping up more and more services in coastal areas which already have a public transport system hinterland residents can only dream of. From July 1, Hinterland communities will again be deserted by Council, with the decision to shut down the only Landsborough to Beerwah bus route and cut back on the frequency of the Landsborough to Maleny qconnect bus services. The services, funded by Council from the transport levy, provided minimal levels of public transport between our local communities allowing residents access to a cost effective means to move about between the towns. The 892 bus route between Landsborough and Beerwah serviced the western corridor and included detours through residential areas and around the commercial precincts of Beerwah, including a retirement village. As the current bus is a ‘hail and ride’ service, older residents and those with children or mobility issues living close to the route could easily catch the bus from outside or near to their home. And locals looking to travel between Landsborough and Maleny – where the bus is the

only mass transport option – have fewer services to choose from. According to Council, route 891 will have “an improved timetable”... by which they mean six less buses. On the weekday services, an 8.11pm late service has been deleted from Landsborough to Maleny, with the last bus now being at 7.11pm. But it is weekends and public holidays which will impact on locals, visitors and tourists, with five services scrapped. The weekend timetable for Maleny to Landsborough now only has two buses running in the afternoon, with the last leaving Maleny at 4.41pm. Before the changes, there were two later buses, with the last being 7.41pm. The Nambour to Maleny and return route (892) remains unscathed for the time being, with no services cut... but there are only four weekday services each day anyway. State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle is concerned with the decision. “Critical changes to public transport need to be done in consultation with the community. A route that has been in place creates an expectation that people rely on to organise their or their children’s activities. To change a timetable is disruptive to many people, not just the immediate user,” said Mr McArdle. “At all levels of government consultation is important, local people with local issues and knowledge need to have a say. It is not always going to go the way the public feel it should, but I can guarantee you if they are not asked and a decision is imposed the public will rightly feel ignored and treated as second class citizens.”

Business future looks bright for USC student Rebel

Accounting student Rebel Beckett, 27, has gone from strength to strength after enrolling in a tertiary bridging course at the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2014. The Aboriginal student from Mooloolah Valley was recently awarded the Zonta Club of Caloundra business bursary – a $2,000 boost for a matureage student at USC who has experienced educational disadvantage. Rebel, who is now in the third year of a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree, grew up in Western Sydney, left school in Year 10 and had worked in sales assistant roles prior to giving birth to her son, Noah, in 2013. It was this major life change that prompted Rebel to enrol in USC’s Tertiary Preparation Pathway (TPP) program, viewing the bridging course as a “foot in the door” towards achieving a professional career. “I didn’t finish high school, and after having my son it became really important to me to build a strong career,” she said. “I really like the idea of building up my own accounting business and working for myself. “I also want to set an example for my son about hard work and what it means to strive to achieve something. “When I started TPP, I didn’t know what to expect. But USC eased me into studying really well. And by the time I enrolled in my Bachelor degree, I was confident and ready to go.” As well as awarding Rebel the business bursary, the Zonta Club of Caloundra invited her to address the club’s annual International Women’s Day cocktail evening earlier this year. Details about study options and pathways to becoming a university student are available at USC’s website and at USC’s annual Open Day on Sunday July 23. Mary Henzell presents the Judy Henzell/ Joan Forde Business Bursary to Rebel Beckett at the Zonta International Women's Day Cocktail Party

Suncorp Maleny shock closure Suncorp made a shock announcement late last week that they are to close their Maleny branch in September, slashing the town’s financial institution options in half in a little over a month. In May, the Maleny ANZ shocked locals by announcing that it would be closing in August, and now Suncorp members have been informed that their branch is to close on September 15. This leaves Bank of Queensland and Maleny Credit Union as the sole banking options in town. In an email to members, Suncorp told them that the Riverside Centre branch would be closing due to “fewer customers coming in to visit us". The email message directs people to use the rediATM located at Bank of Queensland, and those wanting to make deposits and withdrawals or check their account balance can do so with Australia Post. This closure follows the Suncorp branch shutting at Beerwah earlier this year, and a spate of closures across the state, with Suncorp CEO Michael Cameron being quoted as stating that they are looking to "move completely away" from bank branches to one-stop shops for financial services. Local Jared Ashcroft is fuming. “I’ve just finalised changing my account from ANZ. Nothing was said when I was filling out the Suncorp paperwork that they would be closing... it’s just not good enough. I’ll be moving my account somewhere else again now,” he said. Several local businesses spoken with about the closure said that it would affect them. Many were unsure where they would get their till change from now, while others said that having a close relationship with a local branch manager meant that issues could be dealt with more easily and quickly during business hours.

My Mother’s Story - the Journey of a Refugee by Sonia Clark Maleny couple Kirsty Sziron and Kester Chalkley have recently been awarded a Regional Arts Development Fund grant to choreograph and perform a specially-created dance piece based around Kirsty’s mother’s escape from Hungary following the 1956 revolution. Titled ‘My Mother's Story: the Journey of a Refugee’, the intimately inspired performance will be showcased at the Obi Arts Painted Tie Event to be held at the Maleny Community Centre on Friday July 7. Kirsty and Kester both work at the Maleny River School and are parents to three young children. Coming from a longstanding background in performance, dance and the arts, the couple seek to be involved in arts projects that are meaningful and thought provoking. Currently alongside their teaching and family commitments they are involved in running a small community-based dance collective – ‘Heart Space Dance Community’, based at the Waroo Hall, Bunya Street. The $2,000 grant has allowed them to develop a six week project that incorporates contemporary dance, theatrical movement and audio to produce a ten minute work that tells the story of a 19-year-old woman (Kirsty’s mother) fleeing the Hungarian revolution with her infant child (Kirsty’s older sister) and husband. “I have always been drawn to the plight of the refugee and have been pondering on how to deliver that concern in a sensitive manner,” Kirsty said. “My mother’s story is close to my heart and even though I have heard it told so many times it still

Photography by Doug Wilson moves me greatly – this performance allows me to take more ownership in expression and allows me to honour my mother’s story.” The performance will also feature a number of local primary school and high school students as characters in the compelling story. In a poignant touch, Kester has recorded Kirsty’s mother narrating the story and this will also be incorporated with the music and soundtrack. The piece has been collaboratively choreographed by Kirsty and Kester and heralds the first time in almost 10 years that they have performed a dance work together. The ‘Painted Tie Event’ is part of the National Obi Art Prize to be held at the Maleny Community Centre on July 7 from 5.30pm.Tickets are $25 which includes drink and nibbles, kids up to 11 are $5 and 12-18 year olds are $10. Pre purchase tickets at www.obiartprize.com or, if still available, tickets can be purchased at the door.

What’s new at Beerwah Village and Marketplace

There’s been a lot going on lately at Beerwah Village with plans for car park upgrades, new business owners and tenancies, as well as some major refurbishments and awards for existing businesses.

Beerwah Cosmetics hair stylist Jade, manager Tracie, make-up artist Tara and piercing guru Reegan Beerwah Cosmetics has relocated to their exciting new store in the corridor adjacent to Target. The brand new shop features plenty of space for a huge range of cosmetics and beauty products, as well as two treatment rooms for tanning, beauty services and piercing. The move has also allowed the team to offer a full service hair salon offering style cuts, colouring and conditioning treatments catering for everyone including kids and seniors.

Business owner Tracie Price is thrilled about the new location. “It’s a great move for us as we can now incorporate a hairdressing salon as well,” she said. “We are still providing all the same piercing and beauty services as before, now we’re just bigger and better!” After months of work, Woolworths has launched their refurbished store with some great specials to mark the upgrade. Natures Basket @ Beerwah (located next to IGA) has new owners and offers great fresh fruit and vegetables at really affordable prices. IGA Beerwah is also celebrating after winning IGA Queensland’s Grocery and General Merchandise Department of the Year awards. Beerwah Family Clinic is set to open in mid July. This new medical centre will be conveniently open seven days and will offer bulk billing for clients. Finally, work on the new shade sails in the two main car park areas has commenced with the project expected to be completed early in July.

Local to be included in Hollywood Walk of Fame! There wouldn’t be too many Beerwah business owners that are recognised internationally, however Steve Irwin probably wasn’t your typical local business owner.

Last week it was announced by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce that Steve has been selected to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry through his wildlife documentaries. Steve was named among a notable group of entertainment professionals in motion pictures, television, live theatre, radio and recording and was chosen from hundreds of by the Chamber’s Walk of Fame Selection Committee. Steve Irwin’s Hollywood Star nomination has been sponsored by Visit Sunshine Coast who made it possible for the application to be considered and the Irwin family were ecstatic to hear the news.

“What do you do with everything when it's all over?” would have to be the Knitfest's most asked question. Yarnbombing, also known as Guerrilla Knitting, started in the USA as a way to use up leftover yarn and decorate cold, inanimate objects to beautify them. The Knitfest team are the craftiest recyclers ever! The whole event has been created out of recycled, upcycled, repurposed or donated yarns. We're not just a 'green' event, we're a multicoloured event. They have become the queens of recycling taking wool from estates, donations of leftover yarn, unwanted woollen items and unfinished projects and turning them into something else. Jumpers have become cushions, shawls with holes in them have had stunning crochet flowers sewn on to repair them and give them new life. Everything you see is a little work of art in its own right. Pieces that can be used again for next year are saved. Handmade items in excellent condition are given to local charity groups who give them directly to those in need. Older rugs are sent to animal shelters for blankets and bedding. The 'Friendship Bridge' across the Obi Obi Creek is a new addition this year. Donated Jumpers and scarves will be pinned holding hands across the

bridge with the idea that people in need can take an item and replace it with one they no longer need. Kids especially, grow out of hand knits each year so why not swap it for one in a bigger size and leave the smaller size to pass on? If you have something that no longer fits or you're just over it being in your wardrobe, come and swap it for something new. All items left over will be donated to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to give directly to people in need. Donations can be left at the Maleny Credit Union. For workshop bookings and further details, go to www.knitfest.com.au.

Counterfeit currency You may have seen that there was a significant amount of counterfeit currency located recently during the execution of a search warrant at a local residence. While it’s a great result to ensure that no one can attempt to use those notes, it’s also a good time to remind everyone, particularly business owners to be aware that there may still be counterfeit notes around. The most common note to duplicate is the $50 but of course it could be any denomination. If you believe a note is counterfeit you are not required to accept it as payment, instead you should take down any details of the person including any associated vehicles if possible and contact police. For more information about security features of Australian bank notes you can check the Reserve Bank website www.rba.gov.au/ banknotes/.

Peachester’s timber heritage Contributed by Helen Page This photograph from the Peachester History Committee (PHC) collection recalls a memorable meeting in 2001: former bullockies (L-R) Mick Draper, John Mawhinney and Jack Ferris reminiscing about their time as teamsters, how they trained their bullocks, anecdotes about the local timber industry, wonderful memories. These men are all gone now, but we were so lucky to hear their stories! Timber brought the first pioneers to this district and, as an industry, building material, source of work, sport and leisure, it has been central to our history. The Timber Heritage day in October 2016 created so much interest, we are doing it again, and ‘Timber Heritage Part 2’ is the theme for the July meeting. A panel discussion will be led by guest speakers Ashley Sewell and Ian (Chick) Robb, both formerly foresters and senior officers with the State Forestry Department. Ashley is now retired and pursuing his passion for local timbers, with a special focus on the link between timber species, climate and geology. Chick is involved in private industry and is currently general manager of Verterra, a Brisbane-based ecological engineering company. There will also be an opportunity for members to join in the discussion. The PHC collection of timber photos, maps and documents will be on display, together with contributions from Woodford Historical Society and the Friends of Bankfoot House. Members and visitors are also invited to bring along photos, stories and memorabilia. The meeting is at Peachester Hall this Sunday, July 2, from 11am. Visitors are welcome, and please bring some lunch to share. Any questions, call Jan on 5494 2301 or Helen on 5494 9557.

Acrobatics classes have come to Beerwah! After seeing the demand for acrobatics in the local area, and hearing so many parents having to drive half an hour away, Masterpiece Dance decided it was time to bring high quality Acro classes to Beerwah. Classes run on Mondays and Thursdays at the Church on the Rise venue with Miss Michelle, who has years of experience as a gymnastics coach, acrobatics instructor and Kindergym teacher. New Kindergym classes are starting on Monday mornings July 10 for 2 – 3 year olds (Mummy and Me) and 3 – 5 year olds. Kindergym is a fun way for kids to get active, develop fine and gross motor skills, improve flexibility, strength and coordination, all with fun equipment and within a safe structured class environment. Class sizes are limited, so email or call to enrol your child for Term 3.

Masterpiece Dance is a Wonderful place to be! Not only has my daughter thoroughly enjoyed the lessons and developed further in her dancing capabilities, we also love being part of the Masterpiece Family. Such a caring, fun and supportive environment. Jaye, Glass House Mountains

You’re always welcome at Landsborough Markets Following a slight frequency change to the Landsborough Markets earlier this year things have returned to normal with the markets running at the Landsborough Hall every Saturday morning from 8am to 1pm. One thing that has changed however is the Market Convener – after more than a decade at the helm Linda Morse has stood down from the role and another long-term stallholder, Juanita Flett, has taken over the task. Juanita said, “We have some very talented local craftspeople who are regulars at the market. We have recently had a regular fruit and veggie stallholder coming along and we have a couple of plant stall holders who are popular with our visitors. “We have a lovely group of friendly, welcoming stall holders who are always happy to have new stall holders join us,” she said.

Market Convener, Juanita Flett “With the upcoming Landsborough Celebrations as part of the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast, we hope to see a few new faces come along and see what the markets have to offer.” Juanita is keen to see the markets grow and would like to encourage those interested in having even a casual stall to have a chat to her. The stalls are well priced at $10, and stalls are available both indoor and outdoor. Phone Juanita on 0467 882 610 to find out more.

Can you spare some time? Do you have a spare couple of hours to donate your time to help out at the Endeavour Foundation's Recycled Clothing Store at Maleny? The long running charity organisation that supports opportunities for people with disabilities is in urgent need of more volunteers to help out at the Maple Street shop. Currently the store has seven wonderful volunteers, however with July being a popular time for holidays, store manager Lorraine is keen to get the word out to local community members who may wish to volunteer their time. “We are a busy store with lots of donations coming through the door. We would love to have some more volunteers to join our friendly team.

Brenda Simmons with store manager Lorraine Whitson

No retail experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and a willingness to pitch in and help,” Lorraine said. Volunteers can work as little as two hours per shift, though most volunteers find that working a half day (morning or afternoon) suits them well. Working at the Maleny store usually involves a mix of working out the back sorting through donations and general shop work such as tidying up the racks and working on the registers. Jobs include sorting, steaming/ironing, washing and cleaning clothes and bric a brac items and keeping the store looking good. “Anyone is welcome to help out and many of our volunteers develop great friendships and companionship,” Lorraine said. “We often have morning teas and celebrate birthdays together and our volunteers enjoy the socialising as well as providing a valued contribution which directly helps others.” Endeavour Foundation supports local people with a disability in areas such as life skill development, access to and connection with the wider community, and supported accommodation. If you’d like find out more, give Lorraine a call on 5494 3085 or drop in to the store at Shop 6, 39 Maple Street, Maleny.

Donation for Morris House Emergency Fund

Morris House recently received a surprise visit from the ladies at the Sanctuary Op Shop at Mooloolaba. The Op Shop donates funds from the Monday to Friday sales to the Sonshine Sanctuary for victims and survivors of domestic violence and the Sunday sales to local communities. The ladies had heard of the services that Morris House provides through the Landsborough Seventhday Adventist Church and wished to assist those in our community by making a donation to the Emergency Relief Fund. A spokesperson for Morris House said, “We were

presented with an amazing donation of $500. It was overwhelming to receive such a generous donation and we are extremely grateful for this money which will help us to provide much needed help to our clients. “We have no funding for Emergency Relief and depend on donations from the community, which we are very grateful for. However, it is a rare occurrence to receive such a large donation. “Morris House wishes to sincerely thank the Sanctuary Op shop for this generous donation.”

Beerwah Lions begin a new year Contributed by Bob Banner The Beerwah Lions Club, which was formed on May 17, 1967, looked back on a successful year at its annual Changeover Dinner held recently at the Landsborough Hotel. In his annual report, President Charles Farran revealed that the club had donated a total of more than $14,000 to deserving charities during the year, including local fire brigades and the Landsborough Historical Society. Other beneficiaries included drug

awareness programs, childhood cancer and prostate cancer charities, The Queensland Cancer Council, and Lions Eye Health. The Installing Officer was Past District Governor Greg Rollason and President Charles was once more installed as president, while Justin Neubecker took on the role of club secretary, with Errol James being appointed as treasurer. In his address as incoming president, Charles said the club would not rest on its laurels, and looked forward to bigger projects in the coming year.

School News Flag presentation Contributed by Debbie Roberts Andrew Powell MP recently visited Beerburrum State School to present us with a new set of Australian flags, courtesy of Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace, and a brand new Queensland flag which will adorn the new flag poles recently erected at the school's entrance.

School’s buttery creations

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Selected students at Mooloolah State School were recently lucky enough to have a very special guest work with them at the school. Tim Aspinall, a chef and principal at North Shore International Academy in Auckland, New Zealand, came to show the children one of his amazing talents – a special gift he has, to sculpt amazing masterpieces out of pastry margarine. He came to Fun Friday at Mooloolah State School and shared his art and passion with the students. The students were mesmerised by his work and skill and had a great time sculpting the

Buttery dragon by Tim special margarine into their own works of art. They kneaded the pastry margarine and moulded it, sculptured it and detailed their final products. Some Viktor and his of the children needed peace sculpture some help from Tim whilst others just had a great time creating.

Future Toastmasters show off their skills

Awesome win for small school

The Peachester State School Year 5/6 girls recently headed into the finals of the Small Schools Interschool Netball Tournament in top position. Across the three weeks of games the girls won all nine but one of their games which they drew against St Michaels’s College. Peachester ended up playing Glasshouse Christian College in the B division final. The teams tied at 9-all. The Christian College PE teacher said they could either play for an extra five minutes each side of the court, or share the trophy. All the girls decided that they would play for another five minutes. Both teams played their hearts out in a nerve wracking extra time game and Peachester ended up winning by 14 to 11 and bringing home the trophy. It is the first time Peachester State School has won this competition. Big congratulations go to the coaches Carrie Shaw and Tracey Small who coached some of our champions from beginner level to come through with such a well-deserved win! Meanwhile the Year 5/6 boys finished third overall in the B group division for soccer. Both results are excellent given that we were one of the smallest schools in the competition. It proves small schools can get big results.

A group of 39 Year 6 students from Glenview State School recently finished an eight-week Youth Leadership Course conducted by the Glasshouse Country Toastmasters. Club President Martine Goedhart said it had been a pleasure to teach the children the skills of speaking in public. The group of 40 students was divided in two smaller groups so everyone had the opportunity to get familiar with presenting at least three speeches, as well as how to chair a meeting, introduce a speaker, and participate in a debate. There was also the challenging task of answering a Table Topic question without advance knowledge of what the Table Topic Master is going to ask you, and talking to that subject for 30 seconds. However, it did not seem to be a problem for the students. At the graduation on Tuesday night, they surprised their family and friends with the

progress they had made over the eight weeks. The speeches were either informative, hilarious or brought a message to the audience. They showed that they knew how to use hand gestures, and make eye contact with the audience as well as bringing in voice variety. Students who did not present a speech on the night had other important roles to play, being the chairman, vice chairman, evaluators, asking the table topic questions, even calling on parents to come on stage to answer some of them. Every year the Youth Leadership Co-ordinators are amazed how quickly the students discover their hidden talents when guided in the right direction. Glasshouse Country Toastmasters thank the Glenview School for offering this course to their students and making it a part of their curriculum for over 10 years.

Contributed by Debbie Ives Just before the end of first semester students at Beerwah State School took part in the Junior Athletics Day which involved all the students from Prep to Year 3. The students had a wonderful carnival under a glorious winter's sunny day, which included events in vortex throwing, long jump, high jump, relays and short running races. Place getters were awarded along with competitor ribbons for all. Year 6 Student House Captains helped out in the smooth running of the events, and great sportsmanship was shown by all. Congratulations to winning house Coochin with close runner up Mellum House.

She is thoroughly enjoying settling into her new role as she secures relationships and looks to further engage and inspire the social, emotional and learning journeys of the children in the busy room which caters for children aged between three and four years. “The children are so much fun at this age. They are talking and conversing a lot ... it’s so interesting to find out their interpretation of what’s going on around them. At this age it’s great that they can verbalise their needs and initiate activity. We have lots of laughs!” says Teresa. A consistent theme reflected by all the staff at the Centre is how much they all enjoy working together, as well as how much they appreciate the supportive and caring relationships which exist with the families that attend the Centre. “We all have a great time and I have also appreciated getting to know the parents since moving to the area. It's such a lovely friendly

Business feature

community,” says Teresa. Continuing professional development of the teaching staff is a high priority supported by the Centre. Recently Teresa attended a ‘Little Scientist’ course which forms part of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) orientated training program. Focused on water activities, Teresa learnt more about engaging children in the thinking process around exploring these activities and picked up some new great new educational skills to share with her classroom. A big part of what Teresa aims to achieve as Lead Educator is to encourage children to be comfortable to be themselves. Although the days are structured, she is keen to allow flexibility in the daily program so that activities can be adapted to best suit the children’s needs. Catering for a broad range of developmental levels, Teresa understands the importance of encouraging the existing abilities of individual children to build up as well as helping extend confidence to develop new skills and abilities. One of the great ways that self-reliance is developed is in the way that the Senior Kindy children are encouraged to self-serve themselves morning tea and lunchtime options. For example, at morning tea the children are presented with a buffet style fruit and vegetable selection and they are encouraged to use serving tongs to serve themselves as well as being supervised to pour their own drinks. A popular option at lunchtime that the children love is for them to make their own open sandwiches from a selection of fresh items delivered by the Centre caterers – The Healthy Cooking Company. Some of the activities the children are enjoying at the moment in the room include using puppets to

bring story time to life, and lots of creative art work including painting and working with play-doh. Spending time in the specially created ‘Reading Space’ corner is also popular with this age group who get excited about the book and reading area that features an outer space theme complete with a rocket ship bookcase and ‘space’ cushions sewn by parents.

Centre news Sustainability and the importance of reusing and recycling are actively encouraged by Centre Coordinator Ange and the team. After recently watching episodes of the ABC documentary ‘War on Waste’ the ladies have been inspired to create an area for families to bring their outgrown children’s clothes to be swapped. Realising how much goes into landfill, the recycled clothes swap station is a small way for the Centre to help make a big difference. A section has also been put aside to encourage a ‘book swap’ area and families and staff members are encouraged to bring in unwanted items to be appreciated by others.

You Said It Residential downsizing

It appears that the Government's efforts to encourage domestic downsizing of housing is having a direct effect right here in Beerwah. In this case our council has gone way overboard in allowing development of a 'residential’ estate on Peachester Road opposite the aged care facility. I did not realise how tiny the allotments were until now that some residential ‘houses’ are nearing completion. Despite council's continual statements that they will retain the rural atmosphere in our Hinterland this seems to have literally been thrown out the window by this approval. The houses are so close together at the boundary that it will be possible to pass the soap out of one bathroom to the next door neighbours – this may save money for the occupants, but leaves no room for privacy or any recreational areas. I have no idea on the prices there and am not really interested, but prospective buyers must be aware that these dwellings are most unlikely to retain a reasonable level of financial security for the purchaser. So much for developers and council caring about our environment and the people who live here. I can understand that developers do not care, but I am disappointed that council appears to be heading in a similar direction. In the not too distant future these areas will become suburban slums. J.T. Weeks Beerwah

Thanks

I would like to inform and thank all the many customers that have made Peachester Field Service the success it is. From June 30 I will be hanging up my tools and retiring. It has been a privilege to have had an occupation that during the 29 years allowed me to meet so many interesting people and took me to varied and wonderful farms, places and enterprises. I travelled as far afield as Brisbane, Jandowie, Gympie and of course my local area, to repair tractors and machinery. Once again, many thanks for the experience and look after all those hardworking tractors!! Bart Geeson Peachester Field Service

RE: Skippy Park/vegetation damage

How sad, would the letter writer prefer that the children just run loose in the streets vandalising public property instead of building cubby houses in the bushes? My hat goes off to this mum and her children, cubby houses, amongst other things, are being lost

to computer games and to the internet. Once upon a time, children were encouraged to use their imaginations, play outside and even get up to a bit of innocent mischief. Nowadays, the fun-police and these other indoor distractions are ruining our children's spontaneity and right to a sense of adventure. Mike Andrews Beerwah

RE: Skippy Park cubby

Research demonstrates that unstructured, outdoor play in nature is fundamental to childhood. Its importance to physical development, brain development, mental health and gut health cannot be underestimated. ‘Back in the day’ most of us had plenty of space to be kids, climb trees, make bike tracks and jumps, cook over open fires, and build cubby houses without being labelled vandals. It is sad that children doing what they absolutely should be doing with a responsible adult in charge are criticised instead of celebrated. I’m sure we can make space in our community for both nature play and conservation. I hope that the lady concerned takes heart from the letters of support and continues to look for opportunities to help her charges grow and learn. It sounds like she is doing a great job. Clare Staines Maleny

Bus cancellation

It was disappointing to hear the bus service between Landsborough and Beerwah is ceasing shortly. Without a car you rely on a reliable public transport to get around. On the bus recently three people travelling to Beerwah were wondering how they would get home in future as they do not live close to Beerwah station, so rail is not a preferred option. Also friends travel from Maleny to Beerwah to go to Target, Millers and other shops not on the Range, and the ANZ Bank is closing down in Maleny and it was suggested customers could go on the bus to Beerwah to visit the branch there for any personal banking matters. Not an option from July. What value do we get for our Sunshine Coast Council transport levy living in Beerwah? Brian Beerwah

Is it a vote getter?

A number of your esteemed readers have recently rallied to demand traffic controlling lights at the intersection of Peachester and Old Gympie Roads. The request while reasonable would only succeed if the votes were there. As all petitioners appear to be aware of the intersection I fail to see the real problem, apart from human error.

Having driven professionally throughout most of Australia, this would be one of the most user visible spots I have cause to use on a regular basis. We as motorists all need to accept self-responsibility, practise road courtesy, patience and the age old Right of Way rule. Statistics show a frightening number of collisions at traffic light controlled sites. The sad road toll demands all road users to concentrate solely on your environment when travelling our highways and byways. ‘The Poddydodger’ Peachester

Bank closures punish small towns

Last Friday afternoon June 23, all Suncorp account holders received an unsigned email letter to say the Maleny Suncorp branch would close down in mid-September, and the staff were advised on the same day. Our branch at Maleny is a joy to go into, as the women who work there are the greatest bunch of supportive and friendly people I have ever encountered in my days of being in banks (there are also local credit unions with excellent staff). Suncorp has just lost bunches of customer loyalty if the Maleny Chit Chat Facebook page is anything to go by. To Suncorp CEOs and decision makers – this is next silliest decision you've made after the Beerwah branch closure. The trend is now to take away personal face to face customer interaction and replace it with machines, ATMs and Apps. It’s a foolish trend in our society that will lead to a dearth of personal interaction. You, Suncorp, are now part of the same trend which kills the personal satisfaction and interaction of person to person commerce, a regular human need. The other customer group that suffers are older people who are not computer/smart phone savvy. All are being wiped by these sorts of closure decisions here and in Beerwah. Both Beerwah and Maleny are growing customer bases, not falling bases. When I came to Maleny district in 1978 (yes, I'm an earlier settler) it had a population of approximately 800. These days it is now approaching 8,000 (2011 Census 6,860). Just six months back Maleny had three banks and one credit union, now it has just lost two banks. It’s now down to BOQld and the Maleny Credit Union. They will benefit most while Suncorp loses. Richard Giles Conondale

Caboolture Hospital is set for a major upgrade and expansion. Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick said Caboolture would share in $112.2 million over four years for planning and preparatory works for the redevelopment and expansion, with a further $19.6 million allocated to expand the emergency department over the next two years. The Minister made the announcement last week while officially opening a new 32-bed adult inpatient ward, specialising in the care of the elderly. Mr Dick said the new 32-bed adult ward will increase the Hospital’s bed capacity from 233 to 265, allowing an additional 2,500 adult patients to be treated each year. “As part of the new ward, a secure Gentlemen and Ladies Ageing with Dignity (GLAD) unit will open to provide more personal and individual care to elderly patients,” Mr Dick said. “The GLAD unit will be staffed by highly specialised nurses, doctors and allied health staff who are experts in providing care to elderly patients who suffer dementia, delirium, or other cognitive impairments. “The new ward will also cover a range of adult specialities, including coronary and cardiac care, and general medicine, which has seen 30 new doctors, nurses, allied health and support staff join the health care ranks locally. "While the Caboolture Hospital has served locals well for many years, to cater for the increased demand, over the next two years, we have also allocated $19.6 million to expand the emergency department. “This funding will meet the urgent need to increase the emergency department capacity, facilitating better service delivery and reducing waiting times and overcrowding. “The expansion will provide fourteen new treatment spaces, four consultation rooms and one treatment room; almost doubling the current ED capacity. “Works have already commenced on this important project, with an expected completion date in December 2018.”

Picture your kids on holidays During July Glasshouse Country & Maleny News would love to share readers’ photos of what local kids are doing this holiday. We have an example below of Amali Grieve, aged 8, from Beerwah who participated in Zoo Keeper for the Day at Australia Zoo earlier this year. Q: What did you enjoy the most about being a Zoo Keeper for a day? A: I loved getting to play with all of the animals and help look after them. Q: What was your favourite animal you got to spend time with? A: The wombats. They were so cute and when we were getting the photo the little one kept trying to nudge into everyone. Q: What other animals did you get to interact with? A: We got to feed the giraffes. That was funny and slimy. Some of us got to feed the lemurs as well. We also had to scrub the giant tortoises' backs, they needed it! Q: What else did you like about your day? A: Watching the shows and the lunch they give you ... the cookies are awesome! Q: Would you like to do it again? A: Yes please! I've done it twice already and each time was different – please can I go again? Send your photos, with a captions and a brief description of their day to editorial@gcnews.com.au.

... a family pass to the zoo We have one Australia Zoo family pass (two adults and two kids, valued at $172) to be won this week. To win, just like this competition post on Facebook and comment what you would most like to see at Australia Zoo. Hidden Figures in Maleny

Events Tables turned at Outspoken Award-winning local author Steven Lang will swap chairs for next month’s Celebration of Books Outspoken event when he participates in a conversation about his new novel, ‘Hinterland’. His interviewer will be the festival's guest, Kate Evans from ABC Radio National's Books and Arts Daily and Books Plus. Lang, a Maleny local, is the author of two previous novels, ‘An Accidental Terrorist’, which won Premiers’ Literary Awards in both Queensland and New South Wales, and ‘88 Lines about 44 Women’, which was shortlisted for both the Christina Stead and the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards. Steven’s latest novel ‘Hinterland’ is set in an old farming district where tensions have been slowly building between the wave of new urban-tree changers and wealthy developers. In ‘Hinterland’, Lang has created a gripping novel that captures contemporary Australia in all its natural beauty and conflicting ambitions. When a controversial dam project is announced, traditional loyalties and values are pushed to the brink. The event will be held on Friday July 14 at the Maleny Community Centre and kicks off at 5.30pm for drinks and nibbles on the deck, with the author conversation starting at 6.30pm. Tickets are $20 and $15 for students, and can be purchased online at the events website, www.celebrationofbooksmaleny.com, or in person (cash only) at Rosetta Books, 30 Maple Street, Maleny or Maleny Book Shop, 41 Maple Street, Maleny. This event is just one highlight of a comprehensive program that makes up the Celebration of Books Maleny to be held across Friday to Sunday, July 14 to 16. The program includes, displays, workshops, films, performances, group discussions, conversations with authors, a book sale and so much more, all designed to share readers' passion for books. This Saturday, July 1, the Maleny Film Society is offering a matinee and evening screenings of ‘Hidden Figures’ (classified PG, 127 minutes), one of those inspiring and intriguing films that adds previously unknown personalities and dramatic details to enshrined history: in this case the space race of the 1960s by NASA that put man on the moon. Three black African American women, each a genius mathematician in her own right, lay hidden behind this story, eventually revealed in a book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterley. Katherine Goble Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan have their own stories, but as a group were subjected to lack of respect as women and scientists, humiliating segregation and embarrassing and undignified work conditions. NASA’s Mercury Program featured characters we know about such as John Glenn, who put his trust in the figures created by these three women ‘computers’, and the dramatisation comes from convincing actors including Kevin Costner – but the heart of the popularity of this film is the achievement of these women and their colleagues on behalf of all humankind. The afternoon matinee begins at 3pm with doors open at 2.30pm. The evening begins at 6pm with a catered dinner by Spaghetti Junction and screening at 7.15pm. There will be a drinks bar and tea and coffee stand both afternoon and evening. Pre-bookings (for members only) can be made at the Maleny Information Centre or on-line and non-members can purchase tickets at the door. Membership is available via the website: malenyfilmsociety.info.

Jobs for the yard in July

• Top up the mulch around fruit trees. Clean out your compost bin, spread the contents under your fruit trees, and start another. • Feed your citrus trees. Use 125g of citrus tree fertiliser per year of age of the tree up to 1.25kg. You need to do this three times a year – July, November and February. • Plant rhubarb now – either as crowns or small punnet plants. • It’s a good time to transplant existing rose bushes to another spot in the garden if you need to. • Cut back the time between watering for indoor plants to prevent mould and mildew growing. • Treat your lawn for bindii as soon as it appears. Any of the broadleaf lawn herbicides, such as ‘bindii and clover killer’ will do or hand pull if you’ve just got a small amount. • Prune roses to stimulate new growth and flowering for spring. • Take frangipani cuttings – leave them for two weeks before planting. • Cut back asparagus to the ground level as it yellows off over winter. • Watch for caterpillars on your broccoli, cauliflower and kale. Squash them or treat with Dipel or Success. • Split up old clumps of daylilies. Replant them around the garden or give some to a friend or neighbour. • Pinch out the tips of your sweet pea plants to make them bush up and produce more flowers later. Vegetables Plant asparagus, broad bean, peas, beans, parsnip, rhubarb, english spinach, silver beet, zucchini, potatoes, carrot, kohlrabi, lettuce, radish, spring onion, turnip, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, celery, garlic, leeks, swede, sweet potato and tomato. Flowers Plant ageratum, amaranthus, aster, bedding begonia, boronia, candytuft, carnation, cleome, cornflower, dahlia, dianthus, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, impatiens, nigella, Californian poppy, rudbeckia, snapgragon, statice, alyssum, marigold, petunia, celosia, aurora daisy, chrysanthemum, coleus, gazania, gerbera, gloxinia, moluccella, larkspur, linaria, nasturtium, strawflower, Swan River daisy, verbena, kangaroo paw, cosmos, gomphrena, phlox, portulaca, salvia, sunflower and zinnia.

Plant of the Month

Native Cherry

Exocarpus cupressiformis This small local tree has intrigued me for some time as it looks similar to both Allocasuarina (she-oak) and Jacksonia scoparia (dogwood). While I was aware that it was a different and somewhat untidy species, I was not aware of how interesting it was. I had never seen a flower or fruit on a native cherry until recently, when we came across a productive tree on one of our regular walks in Mt Beerwah forest. The fruit appeared as a bright red oval or pear shaped berry, with a small ‘seed’ attached to the end. Further research was enlightening! The small red ‘fruit’ is actually the swollen stem of the attached fruit! Both are reputedly edible and were eaten by Aborigines who also used the wood to make spear throwers. A variety of birds are also attracted to the fruit. Another interesting fact is that Native Cherry is a parasite attaching itself to the roots of other native plants whereby it gains some nutrition. There is always something new to learn from nature, so keep looking and learning!

Glasshouse Country Anglican Church and Morris House appreciate the support of locals to help donate items for locals in need. These essential food items are needed all year round so, if you can afford to pop another item in your groceries and then donate on your way out the door, it will be appreciated!

QCWA Country Kitchens Program

The QCWA Maleny Branch and University of the Sunshine Coast are inviting community groups and individuals to take part in activities which can be monitored by Nutrition students to enable them to identify nutrition needs within our diverse Maleny community. This gives them a valuable experience in applying the theory of community and public health in preparation for professional practise as dieticians. The offer is for between July 10 and August 14 with the aim to highlight the need to prevent the rising incidence of obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. These one hour Footie Talk sessions include nutrition facts and a demonstration of a modified everyday recipe based on one or all of five key health messages: • Eat more fruit and vegetables • Cook at home • Check your portion size • Be aware of sugar in your drinks • Sit less, move more. The talks are okay for kindy kids upwards. They are also suitable for guest speaker occasions, morning and afternoon tea or lunch gatherings, or after school activities. They can consider your requirements and include craft activities for children. If you would like to find out more, contact Judy Stubbs on email judystubbs1@ gmail.com or phone 5435 8140.

To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

My best mate

Contact 5439 9341 or 5496 9671

About a month ago I found out that my best mate was going to be moving away with his wife and kids. He and I have been mates for about six years and our wives and kids get along too. We have had loads of crazy but hilarious adventures, mishaps and laughs (mostly at my expense). We’ve also been able to support each other through some tough times. One of the things I appreciate the most about my best mate is that he is an authentic person. He is probably one of the toughest blokes I know (and I mean actually tough, not just “fake tough”) but he cares about his family and friends heaps and would do anything to help them out. But he is also is not afraid to speak up about things when something needs to be addressed, which is very cool. One of things that us fellas tend to struggle a bit with is sharing our feelings and being “real” with each other. That’s not necessarily a bad thing,

I mean, part of that is just how we are wired as blokes, but it can be a bad thing if we never talk to people about what we really care about and how we feel about it. What we need as guys is to find a handful of mates who we can “knock around with” and do whatever it is that we love doing, whether it be riding motorbikes, surfing, playing music, working on a classic car, 4x4ing, barbecuing, renovating houses, whatever… but we must also be able to open up occasionally and share our hearts too. Often it just takes one man who is brave enough to do this and others quickly follow suit. If some don’t, they’re obviously not quite at that point yet and that’s okay too. Our families need men who are strong physically but also emotionally, mentally and spiritually. To get that we really need some good mates and often a best mate to be encouraged and challenged by.

The Queensland Government has introduced new laws to promote the responsible breeding of dogs. These new laws relate to dogs and puppies born after May 26, 2017. After this date, it is illegal to sell, supply, give away or advertise a dog or puppy without providing a ‘supply number’, which is used to identify where the animal has originated from. Advertising for the sale, supply or giving away of a dog or puppy born after May 26, 2017 will not be accepted by Glasshouse Country & Maleny News without a supply number. To find out more go to www.daf.qld.gov.au and search for ‘dog breeder regulation’.

Just for Laughs Truth be told Once there was a little boy who lived in the country. They had to use an outhouse, and the little boy hated it because it was hot in the summer and cold in the winter and stank all the time. The outhouse was sitting on the bank of a creek and the boy determined that one day he would push that outhouse into the creek. One day after a spring rain, the creek was swollen so the little boy decided today was the day to push the outhouse into the creek. So he got a large stick and started pushing. Finally, the outhouse toppled into the creek and floated away. That night his dad

told him they were going to the woodshed after supper. Knowing that meant a spanking, the little boy asked why. The dad replied, "Someone pushed the outhouse into the creek today. It was you, wasn't it son?" The boy answered yes. Then he thought a moment and said, "Dad, I read in school today that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn't get into trouble because he told the truth." The dad replied, "Well, son, George Washington's father wasn't in the cherry tree." Contributed by Krystal Thomas, Elimbah

Week beginning 28/06/17 ARIES March 21 - April 20 The end of the month is upon you and throughout this week ahead trust yourself in having a firm handle at work and any other practical matters around your property. You should be careful of course not to let your thinking turn too obsessive. Be tactful with partner and family if they visit you over the weekend. Avoid lifting heavy objects. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 This week it is best to avoid someone talking you into a financial deal until you are really sure about the facts. Your practical skills on money matters are excellent but sometimes the brain hopes you can earn more money faster than normal. You may be involved in a discussion with people taking polarised positions over weekend. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 Planetary positions suggest that you should be careful in not allowing a negative past experience to colour your perception of a current relationship. That would certainly make a problem of a new romance very difficult to get underway! Your thinking turns strongly into an investigative mood. This will help you to get to the bottom of things. CANCER June 22 - July 22 You are revved up for action this week. Better not to make it defensive or insecure because of another person being angry. Use your quick reflexes to slide past opponents to get to your goal. The weekend sees friendly encounters. As you are now driven by finely tuned psychic feelings, you will measure the right direction in which to travel.

LEO July 23 - August 22 All Leos are heading into their most incredible experiences since 1998! That is when the last eclipse on July 22 took place. Prepare for the power of the next eclipse this month coming. Accept plans or commitments to change at a moment’s notice. It is best to keep asking for advice. There is magic with any romantic interest. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 This week you should be led by someone’s psychic instinct and act in unison with them towards a worthy goal. This may in fact, bring out some dreamy new emotional territory. Discussions are polarised between you and someone with intense feelings. You offer them a warm appreciation of their difficulties which allows major change. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Sometimes you have no choice but to say “no”! This can be one of those difficult weeks, so you may unwittingly get yourself in trouble if you do not rein in a tendency to exaggerate or make big promises. You love to do this as you have a strong desire to please everyone. However, it is a week where you must be in control rather than confused. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 There seems to be the feeling that some people have got it wrong at first, so you try to logically work things out. However this only turns to misjudgments and exaggeration. It is better to ask questions to glean the truth in a later discussion. Your intuition will help you a lot. This week could then turn out to be constructive, not destructive.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 The week gets off to a promising start. Nevertheless do not let your guard down regarding a controversial matter. The planets indicate that something’s get very muddled. The reason for this is that there are too many choices and so the key points are then obscured. For effective decision making you will need to focus on what is essential. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This is a week when you and a partner are emotionally charged to take action. Just make sure you are fully on board rather than being pushed into something. The latter part of the week sees some resistance and polarised opposition. By the weekend the Libran Moon strives for harmony and emotional difficulties will be overcome. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Changes and rapid shifts can be exciting depending on your point of view. See if you can just sit back and surrender control of a couple of days’ agenda as you are required to take things easy. Those with your best interests at heart lend you support. The weekend sees decisive action and friends and family may have an obligation to you. PISCES February 20 - March 20 This is not the week to do good to others as they are just in an aggressive mood. You are clever enough to think things through using your intuition. You will be as sharp as a tack with your good intellect. Don’t be pushed into finding answers for others as it is better for them to answer your questions instead. The weekend brings harmony.
