Hi Everyone... I know for the last couple of months each year I dedicate much space to the topic of Christmas, but I have to say I am also a big fan of Easter, or at least the possibilities that Easter offers. Being the longest weekend of the whole year, means so many different possibilities, and we have tried to be as organised as possible to help you prepare and enjoy it. For some it is the religious significance that is your priority and you may be attending your regular churches, or for some their infrequently attended church. We have included a complete list of the church services that are planned across the weekend on page 12, to make it a little easier for you. For those that are looking to kickback and have some fun, we have also written about lots of planned events that will be underway on the weekend, on pages 26 and 27. And for those of you who are thinking of taking advantage of having some time off, we have included one of our regular Home and Garden features to give you a bit of inspiration. However you choose to spend this very long weekend, I hope you have a happy Easter and that the Easter Bunny leaves a little treat for you!

Local News Mayor declines casino meeting invite Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace recently put the call out to the Sunshine Coast Mayor, Mark Jamieson, to join him in facing local residents at a ‘town hall’ style community meeting to discuss Council’s plans for a casino in the SunCentral CBD site. Mr Wallace has organised the community meeting for Tuesday April 17 from 6pm until 8pm at Kawana Waters State College, however, at this stage the Mayor has declined the offer to participate in the meeting. Mr Wallace explained that the Mayor has not agreed to the format for the evening, in particular objecting to the requirement for registrations and to the ballot process for attendees’ questions. However, a place will be left available for him should he change his mind. The format of the event which Mr Wallace had suggested would have included presentations of equal length from the Mayor and Mr Wallace presentations from two experts (one selected each by the Mayor and Mr Wallace) and a fixed period for questions from the audience which would be chosen at random by drawing lots. The Mayor and Mr Wallace would have had an equal and fixed time to answer each question. “It is disappointing for me that the Mayor is unlikely to attend,” Mr Wallace said. “However, I am not deterred. I look forward to holding the meeting anyway. I am sure the people of the Sunshine Coast will want to come along to

Mr Wallace with more than 5,000 signatures on his ‘Say No to Council’s Casino Petition’ express their feedback and to hear more about this issue. I will be taking careful note of their views and I will pass them on to the Mayor.” Mr Wallace will explain the course of events to date and lay out his objections to the proposal. Invitations have been extended to leading academics and community figures including Monash University’s Dr Charles Livingstone, who will discuss the latest research around the impact of gambling and casinos on our community. Significant time will be allocated for attendees to provide their feedback on the proposal and to ask questions of Mr Wallace and the experts. The meeting will be open to all Sunshine Coast residents at no cost, but bookings are essential. Interested residents can register at www.trybooking.com/UNYD.

Kev was recommended to us by a friend who had work done at their place by his team. We’re really happy with the quality and service from Kev and the crew. They are easy to work with, get in and get the job done and make sure things are clean and tidy when they leave. We were so impressed that we’ve already recommended Kev to some other friends … and we don’t make recommendations lightly.

Have your say on Gardners Falls Back in March 2017 the Maleny community sent a clear and loud plea to Sunshine Coast Council that action needed to be taken to ensure the safety of people using Gardners Falls. Cr Jenny McKay took the issue to council asking them to support a broad review of the management issues of Gardners Falls. Twelve months on, residents, businesses and community volunteers now have the opportunity to share their views on the long-term management of Gardners Falls, with council releasing a draft landscape and management plan for consultation last week. “Gardners Falls is a beautiful spot and we appreciate that it is fast becoming one of the hinterland’s biggest drawcards for visitors,” Cr Jenny McKay said. “This increase in popularity means it has also experienced some ‘growing pains’ over the last few years, particularly in relation to parking and access to the site. “Investigations identified a range of issues including access to the site, car parking, signage, rubbish removal and anti-social behaviour. “Council has already taken action to address some of these issues, such as increasing the regularity of rubbish services, upgrading the toilet facilities and consulting with key stakeholders and adjacent residents about the future management of the falls. “Rather than address these issues on an ad-hoc

basis, we want to work with local residents, nearby businesses and the wider community to create a safe, enjoyable environment for all visitors now and into the future. “I encourage everyone to view the draft landscape plan. Their feedback is welcomed and appreciated. “Once feedback has been considered, council will be in a better position to move forward with updating this special swimming and picnic spot.” Submissions on the draft landscape and management plan can be made via council’s website and close on Friday April 23. The finalised plan will be presented for endorsement later in the year.

New petrol station plans for Maleny A proposal to develop a new service station in Maleny was lodged with Sunshine Coast Council last week. The petrol station, with possibly two associated food and drink retail outlets, is planned for 19 and 21 Bunya Street, opposite the Maleny State School on the corner of Cudgerie and Lawyer Streets, where currently, two residential dwellings exist. The Material Change of Use application was submitted by Place Design Group on behalf of the developers – Synergy Property Partners Pty Ltd. The development company, which has no association with the current land owners, specialises in small retail complexes and petrol stations across Queensland. Locally, they have developed facilities at Peregian, Marcoola, Caboolture and Caloundra. The site is the same location as a 2012 application to Council for a similar proposal, which created considerable community discontent at the time. The application was subsequently withdrawn in 2013 by the proponent. The land is within the ‘District Centre’ zone, where a service centre is an allowable activity. As such, Council has confirmed to the proponent that the application will be ‘code assessable’ which excludes the requirement for public notification. However, this does not prevent locals lodging formal, ‘properly made’ submissions – for or against – up until the planning decision is finally made. “Moving forward, community opposition cannot affect Council’s decision making for this proposal as the Planning Act 2016 bounds the assessment

to the code assessable framework,” explains the planning report. Despite the planning reports assertion, as well as lodging a planning submission, locals can also lobby the local Divisional Councillor, Jenny McKay, and write letters to us here at the paper. To coalesce the dissenting support, a Facebook page – ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School EVER’ – has been created. The proposal is for eight fuel pumps with cover structures on the 2,024sq m site, and includes a 292 sq m building housing the service station and two retail food outlets. The outlet is planned to operate 24 hours, 7 days a week. Access in will be from Bunya Street only, with the exit being onto Cudgerie Street. Sixteen carparks are provided, with space for sixteen cars at the fuel bowsers. The proponents had a preliminary meeting with the Council planners in December 2017, where according to the application documents, Council gave high-level design feedback. This included requirements for new buildings to be designed to reflect the traditional rural town character of Maleny; and that air quality impact assessments must be provided that demonstrates the use will not cause environmental nuisance by addressing all air quality impacts (including odour and impacts harmful or injurious to health or physical wellbeing) from the proposed use on nearby sensitive land uses, i.e. residential and educational uses. They were also encouraged to consider facilities for electric car charging and battery top ups.

The developer considers that the layout of the development has been designed to make efficient use of the site and to ensure appropriate mitigation of adverse impacts, both internal and external to the site. “This includes the potential for conflict between vehicular and pedestrian traffic within the site and at access points, as well as amenity impacts to adjoining sensitive uses,” reads the planning report. “The exterior aesthetic of the proposed buildings has been specifically designed to be sensitive to the Maleny character and complement the existing buildings in the immediate vicinity. The incorporation of high-quality ‘Queenslander’ features and landscaping, paired with active uses at the edge of the site, will provide for an interesting and welcoming corner lot on entry into Maleny.” The redevelopment will also include contemporary air pollutant controls (Stage 1 and 2 Vapour Recovery System) to provide a substantial reduction in the potential peak pollutant exposures at surrounding sensitive land uses. The report concludes that “…the proposed development has a high-quality form and provides an important convenience function to the local residential and tourist community. It is therefore recommended that Council considers the proposed development favourable and approves the application subject to relevant and reasonable conditions.” If you’d like to know more, you can view all the application documents at www.pdonline. sunshincoast.qld.gov.au and search for MCU18/0074.

Next time you see a woman wearing her medals on the left, please thank her for her service. That’s the message members of the Women Veterans Network Australia (WVNA) seek to promote through their ‘By the Left’ campaign in the lead-up to Anzac Day. The campaign aims to encourage women veterans to march together en masse in major centres all over the country on Anzac Day to raise awareness of their contribution to the Australian Defence Force. Veterans have one thing in common; they have all served or are currently serving their country. Whether male, female, full time or part time, deployed or home service. As an initiative of ‘By the Left’, all current and ex-serving women, from Maleny and surrounds, are encouraged to march as one in on Anzac Day 2018. ‘By the Left’ seeks to broaden the identity of a veteran from “returned service” to current and ex-serving members of the ADF. RSL Maleny Sub Branch is inviting all ex-service branches of Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Peacekeeping Operations, including WRANS, WRAAC, WRAAF, AWAS, WVNA, APPVA,and RAAMC, from Maleny and the surrounding area, to march as one group under the banner of ‘Combined Current and Ex-service Women’ to lead the March down Maple Street, before the 10.45am Community Commemoration at the Maleny RSL Cenotaph. The program for Anzac Day in Maleny also includes a 4.28am Dawn Service and Gunfire Breakfast,

9am Witta Cemetery Service and 9.45am Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital Service. Community groups wishing to march and/or place a tribute at the 10.45am Commemoration Service, please contact RSL Maleny Sub Branch prior to the day by phoning 5435 2672 or emailing info@rslmaleny.org.au. ‘By the Left’ campaign organiser Kellie Dadds, a veteran who has been deployed eight times, says women veterans regularly find themselves wrongly challenged in person or via social media about wearing their husband’s/father’s/grandfather’s medals on the wrong side, an offensive slur that has upset some women veterans so much they’ve stopped attending commemorative events altogether. Art trail for a smooth creative journey The Sunshine Coast has long been known as the home of an amazing group of visual artists, whose work brings much enjoyment to both locals and the many visitors to the area. With the incredible amount of work on display across the range of public and private galleries, as well as artists’ studios, it can be hard to keep track of the whole picture of all the exhibitions and events that are on. However, the new Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Trail launched last Friday has now made the process much more simple by being an online website (accessible via a QR code or search engine), which can tell the whole story of the local art scene and can be kept up to date much more easily than a printed map. The trail covers Caboolture to Gympie and from the Coast to the Hinterland. It is a cooperative venture between all the parties, not a profitmaking one, but has been co-ordinated and built by Maleny Gallery owner, Tony Gill from Art on Caincross. Over the past 20 years Tony Gill has been involved in creating gallery trails, particularly for the Hinterland. These have always had a very good pick-up rate and have been especially valued by the Visitor Information Centre’s volunteers. The growing need for an online presence and the frustrations from having printed copies which all too easily became outdated and misinforming, led

Business News Update with Nicole Hilton Chamber President

Representing the local business community since 1986 We had a full house at this month’s breakfast meeting at The Orangery in Maleny as it incorporated the Maleny and Montville Chambers. Andrew Powell attended, launching the 2018 Glass House Small Business Awards, aka ‘The Glassies’. It was great to see nearly 50 local business owners attending the breakfast and getting excited about the upcoming awards, which recognise small businesses, many of them family owned, that survive solely on the support of their local community.

Tourism Subcommittee’s new Facebook page, Maleny Event Organizers Group. The Chamber wants to support local community people and groups that run events or want to run an event. We see these events as bringing tourists into our town, which creates opportunities for our small businesses. This page is where you can ask for help from other event organisers, clubs, groups and events for volunteers, infrastructure needs, help with promotion, etc. Supporting each other helps Maleny's events shine and our small businesses prosper because of the tourism events we bring to our town. Already the page is generating interest and a wealth of knowledge is being shared. Next month’s breakfast will be held at MDSRC Clubhouse and Beersheba Living Museum, Parklands Drive (off Porters Lane) North Maleny, on April 10. As usual you can book your spot via the Chamber’s website: www.malenycommerce.org.au. In the April/May edition of ‘Come On Up’ magazine they will be advertising the Maleny Walking Trail across the centre two pages as a pullout. This magazine gets distributed to North Brisbane as well as the Sunshine Coast Airport, Visitor Information Centres, major tourist attractions, accommodation houses and other highly frequented locations. This is sure to bring visitors to our region to experience the walk and all that Maleny has to offer. Don’t forget to put the welcome mat out for them!

New face for Maleny Optical Maleny Optical has been helping Hinterland locals for the last 11 years with Stephen and Deborah Hammond at the helm. March 5 this year saw a change with new owner, Paul Brown coming on board. Paul brings with him over 35 years of experience in Optometry and he is excited to share his expertise with clients, both old and new. For the last 17 years Paul lived in the Barossa Valley region of South Australia but regularly holidayed here in the Hinterland with his wife and two sons. They all fell in love with Maleny in particular and four years ago made the decision to purchase a block of land with the plan to move here and build their new forever home. “We just had this feeling that this was the place for us,” said Paul. With his interests being bush walking, reading, yoga and meditation, Maleny seems the perfect place to enjoy these pursuits. With their eldest son finishing High School last year, the time seemed right to make the move to give their boys better opportunities and escape the extreme climate of the Barossa Valley region. With the decision made, Paul looked for ways he could incorporate the lifestyle he loved with the work he loved.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

“We have loved Maleny for a very long-time and it has been a desire of mine to be able to live and work in this wonderful community.” Having worked in corporate optometry for the last few years, Paul really wanted to find a way that he could devote more time and attention to his patients and buying an independent practice in the community he and his family loved was the dream, so when the opportunity arose to purchase Maleny Optical from Stephen and Deborah, Paul jumped at the chance. With both of his boys already involved in local sporting groups, Paul is already looking forward to getting involved with local community groups and events and is excited by the variety of wonderful community ventures that exist in Maleny. With a special interest in children’s eye health, including a behavioural optometry background and the management of aged vision, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes and macular degeneration, Paul’s breadth of knowledge means he can look after everyone in the family. He particularly loves spending that extra time to be able to come up with a treatment plan suited specifically to each patient and works in collaboration with eye specialists and local GP’s to maximise the visual

outcomes for his patients. Paul also has a great team behind him at Maleny Optical with some familiar faces still on board. Fellow Optometrist, Rachel is available every Monday and on the front desk you will still see the smiling face of Siobhan, as well as new assistants, Christina and Lorraine. While some of the faces may have changed, the personal and friendly service remains the same and Maleny Optical still offer the same comprehensive eye examinations and solutions to all your eye care and eyewear needs. They bulk-bill most consultations to Medicare and have HICAPS for instant health fund rebates. Call in today and see how we can help you or phone us on 5435 2733.

in profile Glass House Mountains book ‘ticks all the boxes’

By Sonia Clark Visitors and locals are often left awestruck by the majestic beauty of our region. In particular, the spectacular Glass House Mountains leave a lasting impression on those who experience their wonder. Now community members and visitors alike can enjoy a wealth of knowledge shared in a new book titled ‘The National Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains’. Authored by Ivon Northage and compiled by Roger Reilly, a committee member of Celebrate Glasshouse Country, the book has been produced with federal funds obtained under the Community Heritage and Icons Grant Program. Representing countless hours of research from Ivon, who has been a passionate advocate, dedicated volunteer and researcher of the area for the last 14 years, it has been through his forensic passion for detail and love of the region combined with the encouragement and inclusion of the practical layout skills and images provided by Roger that this book has come to fruition. Although small in size, the book is definitely big on factual and practical information and is essentially a story book exploring the geology and history of the mountains, as well as providing useful information about walks and climbs and the Heritage Listing process. The book has evolved from a series of information sheets created originally for visitors and tourists to the area. Fifteen years ago, Ivon started volunteering at the region's visitor information van then located at Matthew Flinders Park, Beerburrum. The van sat in full view of Mt Tibrogargan, and one day an overseas visitor asked for more information about the mountains. “Nobody knew the names of the mountains!” Ivon said. “I realised that we all needed to know more – especially if we're giving information to tourists. At that time no official training was given about the region and volunteers were just sharing whatever knowledge they had picked up.” This was the initial catalyst for Ivon to begin his lengthy research into the Glass House Mountains. Further interest in the region also developed following an application in 2005 by a local Glass House Mountains researcher Beth Hodge for National Heritage Listing which set the groundwork for a greater appreciation and understanding. Rolling forward a few years, Roger and members of the Celebrate Glasshouse Country Association began to realise that misinformation about the Glass House Mountains was everywhere. From young school kids through to retirees, people wrongly assumed that the mountains were old volcanos. “The more we looked into it, the more we realised how inaccurate and disjointed information about the mountains was at all levels,” Roger said. “Wanting to educate people, we invited Ivon to do some talks for the benefit of council so that we could give tourists the right information.”

Ivon also appeared in a series of short videos created on a shoestring budget on topics of interest to visitors of the area, with photocopies of the transcripts and notes being given out. Roger felt that the series of information sheets compiled by Ivon over the years would make a fantastic (and accurate) book. So, when a grant opportunity to raise awareness of the National Heritage Listing for the mountains presented itself, Celebrate Glasshouse Country applied to have Ivon’s considerable research published as well as applying for funds to redo the information videos. Armed with numerous pages of handwritten notes and utilising an old laptop, Roger and Ivon set to work compiling and formatting Ivon’s years of research. Proudly ‘old school’ in his methodology, over the years Ivon has referenced source texts, log books, journals, encyclopedias, dictionaries and scientific journals to gain information – in short, ‘a mountain of research’, with no cursory Wikipedia references to form the basis of his findings! Ivon said: “I’m doing this book for the locals and it is dedicated to the communities of Glasshouse Country. The Glass House Mountains are not just nice looking, they also have one hell of a history to them and they’ve got it all – geology, history, legend and National Heritage Listing. I bet there is no other place in Australia that ticks all the boxes!” A book launch and information session introduced by Andrew Wallace MP will be presented at Beerwah Library on Wednesday April 4 from 2.30pm-4pm. Everyone is welcome, however bookings are essential via info@celebrateGC. com.au.

Shave for a cure Hairy moments at Maleny pool

Maleny's World's greatest Shave event at the Maleny Pool on Sunday March 18 was a great day with many people coming along to show their support as well as enjoying a swim, the sausage sizzle and take part in the raffle. There were two registered shavers on the day – Luke and Hannah. Luke was shaving in memory of his sister Molly who died from leukaemia. His mum, Gina, brothers and close friends were there to show their support. Luke also had great

support from his local IGA at Montville. Hannah’s long locks were removed and will be sent to Sustainable Salons to be made into a wig. On the day, three other people elected to shave their hair under the skilful hand of Kylie. These were Brenden (from Maleny Pool), Darcy and Peter (pictured below). Several people had their hair creatively coloured by Caryn, with bright rainbows the order of the day. Photography by Marsha Kelly

Students learn valuable lesson

Beerwah High School staff and students really got behind the worthwhile World’s Greatest Shave cause, shaving heads, waxing legs and spraying hair a multitude of colours. ‘Shave for a Cure’ was a learning lesson for two Year 12 boys, Tyler May and Will Coleman, who braved the terror of leg waxing and soon realised just how painful it can really be. However, they raised $150 so the pain was worth it. Special mention must go to the Year 12 Head of Year Karen Sharp who embraced this challenge and committed to having the ‘fro’ shaved. Karen raised in excess of $4,000 dollars and Year 12 student Sharni Drabsch raised over $1,000 for this very worthy cause. The Student Council put on a sausage sizzle and many students had their hair sprayed a variety of rainbow colours. All in all the Student Council will be donating $400 to the cause.

Looking good, feeling great

Two of Beerwah’s Masterpiece Dance Studios mums recently were brave and shaved for a great cause. Erin Taylor and Megan Roy raised a

combined total of $3,400. Megan said they were both thrilled with the outcome and the funds they raised for the foundation. Parent Linda McRostie shaves Karen (above) and Sharni (left)

Sports Expo a hit

The rain pelting down on at the Glass House Mountains Local Sports Expo and Community Barbeque last Friday evening didn’t stop the event going ahead or dampen the spirits of those who attended. Community Development Worker Natasha Odgers said the rain certainly didn't stop everyone having a fun time on the night. “Thanks to all who came along and supported,” Natasha said. “For those who didn't get there and who are interested in joining a local sports group, you can see a range of sports clubs on the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre Facebook page. “Let's get out there and active in our community.”

Local Eats Jamie Oliver’s home cooking program to visit Coast Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen is set to visit the Sunshine Coast from April 5 for ten weeks, and will be located at Stockland Aura, 1 Lukin Terrace, Bells Creek. Local residents will have the opportunity to access and participate in an innovative, community-based cooking program built on Jamie’s beliefs about cooking and the associated impact on healthy living. The basic home cooking course will deliver hands-on cooking classes led by a team of dedicated food trainers and local volunteers. Jamie’s Ministry of Food is a practical solution to the problems associated with diet-related disease. The community-focused program aims to inspire people to get back to basics in the kitchen. It’s about teaching people to start cooking for themselves and equipping them with some simple skills and knowledge. The program inspires and empowers change in the way they and their families eat, and how they think about food.

The 90-minute classes are held at the same time each week for five weeks with a maximum of twelve participants in each class. The course is open to people aged 12 years and over, who want to learn the basics of cooking with fresh food in a fun environment. The cooking program includes Jamie’s hints, tips and shortcuts for preparing healthy food from scratch using fresh ingredients which is of particular importance with only approximately 7% of the Australian population eating the recommended daily serve of vegetables. “Jamie’s Ministry of Food is a fun and engaging program that fosters a sense of community and social connectedness,” said Amy Smith, CEO, Jamie’s Ministry of Food Australia and The Good Foundation. “The program achieves measurable health and wellbeing outcomes for participants and The Good Foundation is thrilled to be bringing this incredible program to the Sunshine Coast.” The course involves a 90-minute class per week for five weeks, with each class costing $20 per

School News Bullying, No Way!

Beerwah High

There is no place for bullying in schools and on the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence on Friday March 16, school communities across Glasshouse Country joined schools across Australia to send out the message: Bullying. No Way!

Throughout the week, students at Beerwah State High School participated in focused learning activities around bullying.

Landsborough State School

Chaplin Linda Whysall led parents, staff and students in learning about bullying and ways to prevent it at school. There were many activities throughout the day including face painting and classroom decorating competitions, but one very special moment was witnessed by parents when the whole school stood in a sea of orange on parade and proudly made a pledge, a commitment to themselves and their fellow peers in order to keep Landsborough State School a bully free environment.

They have discussed types of bullying, strategies to deal with bullying, bystander behaviour and how bystanders can help to show that bullying is not acceptable. Students have also had the opportunity to make a pledge to say NO to bullying at Beerwah High and sign a pledge board that will be displayed in the school. All students were addressed by Rachel Downie, creator of the Stymie program, which allows bystanders to send anonymous notifications to the school about someone who they believe is being bullied or harmed. This empowers students who may not have the voice to speak up but can utilise this program to make a difference in someone’s life. More information is available at www.stymie. com.au.

Peachester State School

Students and teachers wore something orange to show their support for a world without bullying! School Principal Kim Fillary takes this issue very seriously and, over the recent weeks, all students have been participating in targeted lessons, with the whole school designing posters to decorate the walls of the undercover area. Students have been engaged in learning about how to “be a buddy, not a bully!” All of the Peachester school students wore orange to show their support for a school without bullying

Glasshouse Christian College

Students from Prep to Year 12 all participated in the National Day of Action, wearing orange clothes and/or accessories, as the culmination of a week of anti-bullying awareness activities. During the week Year 5 and 6 students joined an interactive webinar with the Office of the E-Safety Commission where they learned how unintentional online actions can lead to cyber-bullying. The theme was ‘imagine a world without bullying’, with younger classes participating in designing Year 1 students Archie Gilbert and Erin Dickens went all out, wearing orange 18

posters and having conversations about bullying, how to recognise it and what to do about it. Middle and senior students designed the ‘here for you’ poster and leaders organised bespoke orange sweets with the same message. One of the regular anonymous bullying surveys was carried out during the week and Principal Mike Curtis spoke in his blog about how bullies are created and what actions parents can take to ensure their child does not grow up to become a bully. Students from Year 1G couldn’t wait to show off their orange outfits

“Once we hired Dan, he immediately had interested people viewing our property and by the open house at the end of week one, Dan had presented us with three contracts! “Dan was spot on with his advice and market appraisal, always available to chat and open to discuss and explain ideas and strategies at all times. Dan was not only patient, but thoughtful and had an intelligent problem solving approach combined with a ‘can do’ attitude. He is the only agent I trust and the only one I will deal with in future real estate transactions.” Sarah, Beerwah

“We had a 60 day deadline to sell our current home. Friends had listed and sold their property for a fantastic price in a very short time and we asked who they had used, their response was, “call my guy, we still can’t believe the price he got us.” We immediately called Dan, who was extremely thorough and professional. We did not even get to the point of listing our property on the net when Dan brought us our first offer and nearly fell over when he bought us a figure $25,000 over the asking price. Now we say, “call my guy, we still can’t believe the price he got us!” Deb & Paul.

“We had previously listed our property with another agent with no result then met Dan. He found our buyer at a price we were very satisfied with. The hunt was on for a new home and through Dan's use of social media we managed to find one before it was listed on the internet. We cannot rate Dan Clarke highly enough.” David & Peter, Mooloolah Valley.

“Dan was by far the best real estate agent we have ever come across. He is so knowledgeable and got our house sold for what we wanted - before it even hit the market! We loved how he was straight to the point and knew the area so well. Highly recommend Dan and the team.” Steve, Beerwah

“We cannot recommend Dan enough to everyone! His attention to detail, dedication & commitment to us for the sale of our property was commendable. He not only got us a great sale on our property, but he exceeded all expectations of what we thought we would get for our property. He worked so hard.” Bob & Marilyn, Glass House Mountains.

You Said It Re: A day in the park

The new park design really needs to be looked at. I took my kids on the weekend and they loved the park but there definitely needs to be some sort of fence between the playground and the lake. The only seating is placed on one side of the park then the lake on the other. It is easy for a child to wander off into potential trouble if parents aren’t supervising their children properly. Also, re the balance beams, my daughter fell off (as she couldn’t make it the whole way) and almost hit her head on the big rocks placed at each end. Rebecca Mason Bellmere

Daepo Korean BBQ

On a recent Saturday evening my family celebrated a 72nd birthday at the Daepo Korean BBQ restaurant in Beerwah. The evening was a great success with wonderful welcoming service and beautiful food. The staff member even remembered my husband and I from when we went there in October. Considering the number of customers who frequent the place I thought that was remarkable. Her smile of welcome was lovely. We want to say how much we enjoyed ourselves, especially our eldest grand-daughter who had recently visited Korea and loved it. She felt quite thrilled at the experience. Diane Gudgeon Landsborough

Shave for a cure

The World's Greatest Shave held in Maleny on Sunday March 18 would not have been possible with the support of the wonderful Maleny community. Brenden and Allison, who have done a wonderful job at running the Maleny Pool this swim season, enabled us to hold the event at the pool. They also generously donated all pool admissions on the day to the Leukaemia Foundation. Kylie from Hair by Kylie did the shaving and Marsha from Marsha Fotografie took wonderful photos on the day. Both generously donated their time. The sausage sizzle was supported by Maple Street Meats and Maleny Hot Bread Bakery. The raffle and lucky door prize were donated by IGA Maleny, Brouhaha Brewery, Monica's Cafe, Judi Coey Optometrist, Star Discount Chemist Maleny, Maleny Food Co, Rosetta Books and the Soap Bar.

Check out local businesses first

Recently I decided to do some updating on my home. I asked a friend to recommend a good tiler, as she and her husband used to have a building business, and she recommended Paul from Glasshouse Tiling. I had a vision of what I wanted but Paul made it better, and for my plumbing needs he recommended Landsborough Bathroom and Plumbing Solutions. Not only were they super helpful but a lot cheaper than any quote that I received from Caloundra. Being really happy with the work done by KNM Kitchens and Cabinets in Beerwah, I decided to do the rest. I was then recommended by Mathew to get a quote for my vinyl from Aussie Carpets and Vinyl, also in Beerwah. The quote was a few thousand less than the quote from a business in Caloundra, so I was happy. I had my disappointments as well. I rang two places for quotes to do some painting; one never called back and the other took two months to get back with a quote. So, if you are looking to do any work try some of these businesses. We do have quite a few good ones in our local area. Sandra Hanson Beerwah

Well said, Donna

I concur with Donna Turner (GC&M News, March 21). The Coffee Club Beerwah has become a welcoming and relaxing place, and the new owners go above and beyond to make you feel at home and make sure everything is okay. They stop and have a quick chat with their customers, and it really makes you want to stay there all day with such friendly service. Keep up the great work, guys! And yes, keep supporting local businesses! Jillian Watt Landsborough

The extra mile

After six months going the ‘extra mile’ from Ipswich to Glasshouse Country, Uniting Church Reverend Peter Woodward concludes his supply ministry with us. If that name sounds familiar to some of you, yes, Peter is Rev George Woodward’s brother minus the motorbike, the long hair and long beard. They both preached on the Love of God and told many family stories during their sermons. Peter’s ministry has included 37 years of Army chaplaincy and ‘parish’ appointments in Tully and Ipswich. He ‘retired’ from full time ministry in 2012 has enjoyed supply ministry over the last six years where his passions for preaching and discovering God's love in people can continue. He even made time to run a special Preaching Course for us in Glasshouse Country in March. He certainly used his many talents and shared his passion for singing, preaching, and the importance of the love of God for everyone while at Glasshouse Country Uniting Church. Thank you Peter and Joan, we will miss you. Chris Bell On behalf of the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church

Outrage at proposal

Maleny residents have formed the ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School Ever’ group and are mobilising to stop a development plan submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council to build an eightbowser service station and two fast food outlets directly opposite Maleny State School. The development application was presented to Council in December 2017, by Synergy Property Partners, but did not become public knowledge until last week. Over 400 students attend the primary school, with some classrooms only 40 metres from the proposed site. There is concern among parents for the health and safety of children, while at school and getting to and from school. The development would cause an immediate traffic and pedestrian safety risk, as well as possible long-term health risks for the children and teachers. We are questioning why this land was zoned ‘impact assessable’ and open to public consultation when a similar service station development was lodged in 2012, but defeated due to public pressure in 2013. The new planning scheme zoning is now only ‘code assessable’ and therefore not open to public consultation. No explanation for why this is the case has been provided by the Council, despite numerous requests for clarification. In addition, the Traffic Impact Assessment by Lambert & Rehbein, on behalf of the developer, states that the impact to traffic congestion on the main road would not be significant, primarily because residents commuting to/from work use public transport and therefore do not drive along the main road in front of the site. We believe this is a major error, as there is minimal public transport in Maleny and 62.4% of residents commute via car (ABS Census data, 2016) and must go past the proposed site, as do almost all visitors; hence the concerns about traffic congestion and road safety so close to the primary school. To find out more, go to our Facebook page ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School Ever’. No Fuel Opposite Our School Ever

Planning for an automated future

Is there any way of slowing down time, so we can enjoy the comparative prosperity, perhaps the last rays –for a time – of a more egalitarian

community life before we go headlong into a world resembling some grim science fiction dystopia? As a result of high technology, a lot of jobs will soon be disappearing; it is a trend that has already started – but it is about to accelerate. Many people will need to re-calibrate their framework of living and means of sustenance as work becomes more ephemeral and life presents new and even rockier challenges. For example: National Australia Bank recently announced they would be laying off 6,000 staff over the next three years. This is well documented, as is the fact that this trend will occur across the banking sector. Accounting firms, law offices and telecommunications companies will all be slashing staff with the new technology. Many manufacturing jobs have already been ravaged by greater automation and robots. Sooner or later driverless trucks will appear on our roads (how creepy is that?). Even the noble fruit picker is to be made redundant. There was an intriguing article in the Business section of the Australian newspaper last November where Robert Gottliebsen discussed the impacts of robots and automation on employment, where he offered up some hope, with the view that there will likely be a resurgence of small business, including a rejuvenated small scale manufacturing sector. A difficult and potentially bleak future may yet bring the community closer together and provide the impetus for greater self-determination and the means for new prosperity and abundance in our own hands. Knowing when to pull out the plug, the fuse and shut down the system, may also help along the way. Jon Woodlands Cambroon

Aquatic centre may complement park

How wonderful for the people of Glass House Mountains and surrounds that they now have a genuinely 'mixed space' parkland that includes a suite of community facilities – barbeque shelter, places to sit and rest, picnic areas, playground, dog off-leash area – with more to come. How satisfying for the former owners Gloria and Gordon Lawrie, that the land has been used in such a kind and community-friendly way. However, getting to this park from Maleny is a bit of a stretch, but luckily we have the Council-

owned Community Precinct on our doorstep. Our campaign for a spacious park on the Precinct has been enthusiastically supported, including by our visitors. We love the beautiful Maleny Trail that encircles the Precinct but are puzzled there are so few amenities to go with it. Meantime an aquatic centre, or 'fitness village' as it has been described (two pools plus other amenities), may be on the cards, following a proposal to make space available on the Precinct. A site allocated some years ago proved unsuitable and Cr McKay plans to contribute $50,000 from her Divisional Fund to find an alternative. A site leased by the project's promoters, the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club, is unlikely to prove feasible due to sub-surface floating rock and other factors. Happily, it's perfect for a park, right beside the most popular part of the Maleny Trail where it follows a bend in the Obi Obi Creek. We are confident that MDSRC's leaders, who take pride in their community spirit, will see and support this. A feasible site for the fitness village may well exist elsewhere. Jane Hyde communitymaleny.org

Does nature know best? Last week we received this well timed photograph from Glass House Mountains local Bob Waldock. Bob’s property has become a ‘must visit’ destination for some local Fruit Bats dropping in to feast on the Golden Cane Palm berries in his garden. Bob’s description of these visits is: “noisy, raucous, and argumentative and they leave the area around the Cane Palms stinking”. After spotting this disturbing sight, he is wondering if the bats have themselves a rather brutal, natural deterrent.

Health &Wellbeing Potential vaccine for coeliac disease The University of the Sunshine Coast’s Clinical Trials Centre has launched a clinical trial of a new vaccine that aims to improve the lives of those with coeliac disease by ‘switching off’ the immune response to gluten. The centre’s director, Lucas Litewka, said the investigational vaccine would be given to trial participants as an injection twice a week for seven weeks. The centre is seeking adults between the ages of 18 and 70 to take part in this trial if they have medically diagnosed coeliac disease and have been following a strict gluten-free diet for 12 months or more. Those who meet the criteria and are enrolled in the study will be compensated for their time. Patients interested in participating can go to www.joinourtrials.com or phone 5456 3797. that causes damage to the small intestine. Sufferers struggle with various gastrointestinal symptoms and, if untreated, face potentially serious complications. Currently, the only way to manage the disease is by the strict avoidance of gluten in the diet. Dr James Daveson, who is also involved with the clinical trials at the centre, said a glutenfree diet was exceptionally demanding for patients, expensive and difficult to maintain as gluten was used extensively in modern food production. “There is a real unmet need for therapies other than the gluten-free diet for some people with coeliac disease,” he said. “This is a very exciting potential new therapy that has been undergoing clinical trials for several years now.” Dr Daveson said the investigational vaccine might potentially restore gluten tolerance in coeliac disease sufferers.

Popular speaker for Zonta morning tea Zonta holds a special morning tea every second year to showcase the valuable work done and raise funds for the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. Their speaker from two years ago, a young woman who had been inspired by a visit to the hospital, is returning on April 12 to speak at this year’s event at the Uniting Church in Maleny from 9.30am to noon. Fiona McKeague is a community engagement officer at Griffith University and, hearing about the hospital from a friend, she came up with the idea of giving a Mother’s Day gift of a midwife to women who needed it most. Together with her friend she raised $18,000 to send a young woman to the Hamlin College of Midwifery in Addis Ababa for the four-year course and followed it up with a visit to the hospital started by Australian doctors Catherine and Reg Hamlin in 1974. Zonta Blackall Range Vice President, June Robson said the club was delighted Fiona was able to come to speak at this year’s event and encouraged those who came two years ago to invite their friends to come along this year. June emphasised that not only is the Hamlin Fistula Hospital morning tea an opportunity to listen to an inspiring speaker, but an opportunity to support a wonderful cause. Cost is only $15, which includes a super morning tea. Phone 5499 9234 for tickets or tables. People can make up a table, or just come on their own.

Health Check Are you sleep deprived?

Caring for your mental health

with McCloy Dental

with Kelly Sweeting

There are a number of indicators that you may be sleep deprived including that you’re craving sugar and carbohydrates, you get clumsy, your skin isn’t looking good, and you get sick more easily than usual. Lack of sleep produces a hormone called ghrelin that makes you hungry for fatty and sugary foods and the amount of Leptin, the chemical that tells you when you’re full, is reduced. When you are sleep deprived, your cortisol levels spike. This can dehydrate your skin and break down the collagen that keeps it firm. In other words: you look older. If you are sleeping less than seven hours a night you are three times more likely to catch a cold than someone who sleeps for at least eight hours. You produce infection fighting proteins while you sleep. The less you get, the weaker your defences. One study found that people who stayed awake for 35 straight hours were 60% more reactive to negative images. Brain scans showed changes in the prefrontal lobe, that area of the brain that keeps your emotions in check. So, get some sleep! Your skin, diet, immune system and brain will thank you. Contact McCloy Dental for any sleep related issues on 5495 7988 or www.mccloydental.com.au.

Esprit Psychology opened its doors in Beerwah in August 2016. Since that time we have been working with individuals, couples and families to help achieve meaningful and worthwhile lives. Our Psychologist Kelly Sweeting has experience in a wide range of problems including: depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, addiction, relationship counselling, trauma, complex mental health conditions and work place difficulties. Kelly uses various evidence based interventions to support her clients. Mainly, Kelly uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Solution Focus Brief Therapy. The philosophy of Esprit Psychology is to encourage the people who we work with to learn and understand the problem in-hand and allow then to identify their own goals. The journey starts with finding out what the problem is and then finding the best way for the individual to address the problem. The skills that people learn in sessions are not only useful in the present but hopefully will be useful in the future. Kelly works with individuals from 12 year olds to older adults. If you receive a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, your sessions will be bulk billed. Alternatively you can book an appointment privately. If you require further information or would like to book an appointment, please give us a call or send an email.

Tour for learning and fun!

Once you’ve got through the Easter long weekend and its school holidays, have you worked out what you are going to do with the kids (big and little)? Why not head along to Maleny Dairies and check out one of the hour-anda-half-long farm and factory tours and learn all about the process of milk from the cow to the bottle and everything in between? The cost is $11 per person and they run at 10am, 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm. The tour begins up at the ‘Milkbar’ where a tour guide will take you to see a short film about how the farm began in 1948. From here it’s down to the factory to see how they process and package their products. Then it’s up to meet their tour cow for a hand milking demonstration and a chance to taste the milk straight from the udder. You will then get to bottle feed the calves in the baby pen before heading up to the dairy to see where the herd gets milked. The tour finishes with a taste testing of all the products! You may want to spend a bit more time on the farm to enjoy a coffee and let the kids run around. So bring a picnic or make use of their barbeques. Go to the Maleny Dairies website to book your tour. The Dairy is located at 70 McCarthy Road, Maleny.

Hop along to Aussie World FREE child minding from 8am to 9am and 3pm to 5pm each day.

Two English films on offer

The weekend following Easter will be a great time to catch up on two films being screened by the Maleny Film Society at the Maleny Community Centre. On Saturday evening, April 7, you can see ‘Final Portrait’, which will be the second in a trilogy of films about famous artists and on Sunday April 8 at 4pm they will be showing British biopic, ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’. ‘Final Portrait’ is a UK drama featuring Geoffrey Rush as Alberto Giacometti, the Swiss-born painter, sculptor, printmaker and draughtsman. Scripted and directed by Stanley Tucci (better known for his acting roles in ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’), ‘Final Portrait’ deals with the story of American writer James Lord (Armie Hammer) who, on a short visit to Paris, agrees to have Giacometti paint his portrait. Shot in almost-monochrome with slashes of colour provided by the women's dresses, this elegant 2017 drama provides Rush with a wonderful vehicle for his immense talent. Sunday’s film ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’ deals with the father-son relationship between the famous children's author AA Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his son. The film shows how Milne, suffering from the horrors of World War One, retreats to a country house and finds comfort in telling his small son stories in which Winnie-the-Pooh and other toys feature as characters. The stories ultimately become a publishing success, bringing fame to the family and happiness to a society struggling to deal with the aftermath of war. Margot Robbie plays Daphne Milne and Kelly McDonald the Scottish nanny. Take a Break Playgroup

School Holidays are due, so the Take a Break Playgroup that meets at the Glasshouse Country and Peachester Uniting Church in Twin Peaks Drive at Beerwah will be on holidays too, from March 28. A spokesperson for the group said: “We will start back on April 18. Our team of Elaine, Keith, Ethel, Doris, Diane and Kevin will then be ready for the new term and will be raring to go. Please come along and join us, we love to have new children and of course their mums and dads too. God has been with us this term and we know His blessings will see us through the new term with love and laughter.”

From the churches Matt.10:38: “Anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” The Scriptures teach, “We must go through many trials to enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22) and it’s true. There is hardship, tribulation and affliction in life. The personal burdens we bear and the tough times we endure are not accidental. Remember, Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Luke 9:23) First the cross, then the crown. We sometimes get it turned around. We’d like to go right for the crown and bypass the cross altogether. We prefer glory and honour over suffering and distress. These crosses come in different shapes and sizes for each of us. For some it may be the cross of physical suffering; for others the pain may be emotional. It may be a constant struggle against

At the well-attended March dinner meeting of the Beerwah Lions Club, President Charles Farran was pleased to welcome two new members to the club’s ranks, John Rodwell and Angela Mulder. Installing officer Justin Neubecker took the opportunity to pass on some of the history of Lions International that was established in 1917. Today Lions have 1.35 million members spread across 46,000 service clubs in most civilised countries around the world. They all have a common goal: Let’s improve our communities. During the night a number of Lions received membership pins recognising their years of service. Steve and Margret Royal received their one year pins, Michael Wise his two year pin, while veteran Lions Alistair Waddell and Bob Banner received their thirty-two and forty-eight year pins respectively. Auxiliary President Gail Farran presented a comprehensive report on the activities of the ladies auxiliary and their significant efforts to assist the Lions.

Jill Schefe Glasshouse Country Lutheran Church bondage to sin and the prison of bitterness. For others the cross may be the chronic ache of loneliness or some the gaping hole in life that threatens to engulf us. But whatever the shape of the cross, still it is a cross and it hurts. Suffering is not optional in the Christian life; it is one of the identifying marks of the Christian. The amazing thing is that these burdens are instrumental of God’s love and healing for us. God uses the hardships and reversals of life to drive us to his Word. When we are broke and helpless we often see God’s love all the more clearly. Along with St Paul we learn that God’s grace is sufficient for us. The sufferings of this present world aren’t even worth comparing to the glories to be revealed in heaven’s glory. All the weight and burden of our guilt was heaped on Jesus. First the cross, then the crown. Because of His great mercy, he gave us new life by raising Jesus Christ from death. Cancer risk home renovators cannot see Silica dust is an invisible cancer risk which could be lurking in bathrooms and kitchens – putting some DIY home renovators at risk. Cancer Council Queensland is urging home renovators to be aware of unseen cancer risks, with over 230 lung cancer cases in Australia caused by exposure to silica dust each year. Silica dust is a fine dust that can be found in some stone, rock, sand, gravel and clay – as well as bricks, tiles, concrete and some plastic materials. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said when inhaled, silica dust can in some cases lead to lung cancer. “Opting to do home renovations, DIY style might save you money – but before you start it’s important to be aware of hazards that could impact your health,” Ms McMillan said. “Silica is surprisingly common – and can be found in things like bricks, tiles, concrete and some plastic materials. “When these materials are worked on or cut, silica is released as a fine dust that’s 100 times smaller than a grain of sand. It’s so small you can’t see it – but if you breathe it in, in some cases it can lead to lung cancer. “If you’re about to start renovations it’s vital to be aware of the invisible cancer risks lurking around and take precautions to protect your health. “Proper protection is a lot more than just wearing

Make your dream kitchen or cabinetry a reality! KNM Kitchens & Cabinets is an independent locally owned and operated family run business that prides itself on offering well priced and well made locally manufactured products to suit a wide range of clients’ needs. Established by Ken and Narrelle Muller who have been in the Glasshouse area since 1957, the business also employs son Matthew Muller as Operations Manager, daughter-in-law Rebecca and ‘adopted son’ Peter Small as Production Manager. Matthew and Peter have worked together for 20 years and are highly qualified cabinet makers with 45 years of combined cabinetry experience between them. The business has been operating in Beerwah since 2012, and owner Ken is proud to say that the bulk of their client base has been made up of referrals and word of mouth. “I’m pleased that we have built up such a solid reputation over the last seven and half years. Apart from a small amount of local advertising

and our signage we do no big advertising – the majority of our business is from repeat customers or their referrals,” said Ken. The team at KNM Kitchens & Cabinets believe it is the quality of their work and exceptional service that sets them apart. Everything is custom made, with most of the cabinetry done and assembled onsite in their workshop. Clients can come in and view the assembled work before install which provides scope for additional changes if required. This ensures client satisfaction and peace of mind by having the opportunity to see exactly what they are getting before it is installed in their homes. Although a locally based business, their service is not restricted to the area – they can supply and install all cabinetry needs from the Gold Coast to Bundaberg and out west to Kingaroy. They have even provided ‘supply only’ cabinetry as far away as Darwin! Offering a full design service with 3D CAD drawings, Matthew, Peter and the team provide free callouts, quotes and design, and they will see through your project, no matter the size, from beginning to end. With one-day installations, whether you want to just refresh your existing cabinetry with new doors or tops, match in an existing look or upgrade to your dream kitchen – the team can provide everything you need. They can even supply appliance packages with warranty including stoves, dishwashers and ovens at very competitive prices. Although specialising in kitchen design, they also offer a wide range of other cabinetry options including custom made vanities, laundries, entertainment units, bookcases and more.

Ken, Narrelle, Rebecca and Matthew Muller with Office Manager Peter Small If you are dreaming of updating an existing kitchen or designing a new kitchen then let the team’s expertise provide the options you require to create cabinetry you will continue to appreciate for years to come. “There are no limits to kitchen design, the possibilities are as far as your mind is willing to travel. If you have an idea or dream then we can make it reality,” says Peter. They carry all the latest products on the market from Caesar Stone and Quantum Quartz benchtops through to natural granite and standard laminate tops, using market leaders such as Laminex, Polytec and Egger. They offer a range of stylish hardware from Blum, Grass and Hettich allowing clients to accessorise their kitchen needs to perfectly suit their lifestyle. Photo restoration and picture framing Beautifully presented art pieces that will delight you! Beerwah Picture Framing has recently passed its two-year milestone, and owner Seb Messina couldn’t be happier with the business that allows him to combine his passion and professional expertise for photography, art and framing with an enviable lifestyle that allows him to live in a beautiful location and meet wonderful people. “I love that I’m constantly meeting interesting new people through the business and that I can provide clients with beautifully presented pieces that can take pride of place in their homes,” says Seb. For easy access and convenience, Beerwah Picture Framing is situated only a few minutes from the centre of Beerwah. Located at Mountain View Estate off Old Gympie Road, Seb works by appointment in his studio so encourages clients to phone ahead to confirm a convenient time to drop in and discuss their framing or photo restoration needs. With a wide range of moulding samples and mat board chevrons in a variety of colours available, Seb is always happy to extend his professional knowledge to assist clients achieve a finished product they will be truly delighted with.

If you are travelling soon and contemplating purchasing art then why not contact Seb who is always ready to help with advice on what to consider when purchasing art pieces, be it in Australia or overseas. An enthusiastic traveller with considerable art purchasing experience, Seb is always happy to share his knowledge with his clients. “It can be very disheartening to find that the art that you purchased on your travels is limited in what you can do because the canvas or paint is dodgy. I’m always more than willing to share tips

This option works particularly well for commercial applications and is also great for framing that requires pictures to be changed as the frames can be unscrewed easily. Seb is always happy to answer questions about the framing or restoration process and continues to look forward to meeting new clients as well as his lovely regular clients. about what to consider in purchasing so you can enjoy your artwork for years to come,” says Seb. It is worth noting that Beerwah Picture Framing’s photo restoration service has been very popular. Seb offers photo scanning and print enlargements done on his wide format Epson professional printer and images can be easily brought in as hard copy photos or digital images on CD or USB drives. Of course, Seb’s core business is still quality picture framing and it is never too much trouble to help a client pick the right combination of textures and colours to make that special piece of art really sing! An important part of framing is stretching canvas, and to ensure longevity it is important that stretching is done right. Home & Backyard Get organised to be inspired If you love the look and feel of using timber building materials, furniture, and artwork in your home and garden, then the Maleny Wood Expo is a great spot for plenty of inspiration and practical advice. The Expo, which has been going now for more than 20 years, is recognized as one of the best wood shows in Australia, and fortunately it is right in our backyard. It will be held on the long weekend of May 4 - 6 at the Maleny Showground. This spectacular annual event organised by Barung Landcare brings together a unique mix of businesses and community groups to showcase Australia’s rich timber heritage and the talented work of regional wood artisans working in sustainably harvested native timbers, weeds or recycled timbers.

If you haven’t been before, the idea is that you can wander around the showgrounds and take a look at lovingly crafted timber products, talk to the craftsmen and women who’ve created them, and visit the truly inspired work that has been entered into this year’s ‘Wootha Prize’ exhibition. For those that are keen to more than look, there is also the opportunity to do some of the many hands on workshops. The final list is still being completed but already on the program is ‘Woodworking for Women’, spooncarving, woodcarving, macramé, ‘Make your own milking stool’, as well as the special program for the kids.

you go on-line and purchase now, it will only set you back $12, or $28 for a three-day pass. To check out this year’s program of workshops and exhibitors and to purchase tickets, head to www.malenywoodexpo.com.

The Junior Landcare Paddock is the hub for kids' activities. Kids of all ages can learn from experienced woodcrafters and use real tools to make toys or a gift for Mum. There are also plenty of native plants for your garden on sale, live demonstrations of mobile milling, chainsaw carving, woodworking, trade tools and more. It really is lives up to the event’s motto of ‘from seed to fine furniture’. While the big event is still a month away, the early bird tickets are already on sale. One-day tickets are available at the gate for $15, but if

In the Garden Woodend Garden and Art Studio In 2017, as part of the Maleny Garden Club’s ‘Gardening on the Edge’ weekend, six properties flung open their gates and welcomed the masses in to poke about their gardens. Leading up to the 2018 event in June (and hopefully getting you in the mood to come along), we continue the series featuring the gardens and the garden owners for 2017.

position, light and outlook. As with many local gardeners, the Edmonds have taken to mixing natives and exotics within the landscape. This is a clever approach, as you can then take best advantage of the localised conditions to get the best results. Shady areas may be better suited to veraya, clivia, bromeliads and ground covers such as the exotic Swedish Ivy (plectranthus). But they can be mixed with natives such as edible native violets. An area which receives full sun has been turned into a butterfly garden with flowering perennials

The native Emu Bush (Eremophila)

Viraya is a shade lover

It must be said that when you arrive at a garden and are greeted by a detailed map of the landscaping layout and planting, you get the feeling that owners are most likely to be super organised and their gardens the same… structured, ordered, controlled and formal. But ‘Woodend’, a sprawling garden at Flaxton, was anything but formal… as were the welcoming owners, Wendy and Dave Edmond. Moving there in 2007, Wendy and Dave got to work removing duranta hedges (a good move, as their berries are deadly poisonous) and endless palm trees. They planned and created a series of areas and zones, taking into account the view lines (both within their block and across their neighbours), microhabitats and how they envisaged they would actually use their acre and a quarter.

such as buddleia and metrosideros (think New Zealand Christmas Bush), combining with flowering annuals and biennials. Here they’ve used masses of different salvias – which are butterfly magnets. The birds don’t miss out. Apart from the whole garden being bird friendly, a section has been dedicated to concentrating nectar, fruit and seed producing trees for the birds. Here, naturally, they’ve used mostly natives – including callistemon, grevillea, kangaroo paw, myrtles, xanthostemon (golden penda), black bean, Leichhardt tree, flame tree, blue quandong and many more. Walking around a very large dam, you can see that the smaller birds are also catered for by planting shrubs, bushes and tall reeds around the water edge. This is a great way to help protect the smaller birds as they come down to the water to drink and bathe.

Retirement from Queensland politics (where she was a Minister) gave Wendy much more time to focus on her artistic side, and so an art studio became an important addition to the house. The studio looks out over the landscape, which must greatly stimulate her creative side, as bits of her garden regularly feature in her paintings. This is an important element to consider if you have – or want to have – and art studio. Your surroundings and what you see will influence what you create… so think carefully about the 36

Lorikeets love Xanthostemon

Wendy and Dave Edmonds with granddaughter Margot Having the space to grow large trees allows a gardener to splurge and plant some interesting specimens… and there were more than a few to be found at Woodend. One unusual example was a Candlenut Tree (Aleurites moluccana). This is a north Queensland rainforest native which has an edible large nut fruit. Care must be taken as it needs to be treated correctly otherwise you can end up very sick. The nut has a high oil content which enables them to burn with a smoky flame lasting 1015 minutes. String them on a piece of wire and you’ve got yourself a ‘lamp’. One striking new feature was the impressive timber pergola… and curved no less, which is trickier. Keeping the structure line clean without over engineering gives it a classic look, and the curve means you can’t see where it leads you – a beautifully simple technique to add intrigue to any garden. It focuses the attention on what is around you rather than what is ahead. Another clever idea is the use of smooth branches painted in standout colours (it helps if you’re an artist). Wendy makes good use of them in a section of the garden which needs brightening up … a simple yet effective approach. It was a pleasure to be afforded the opportunity to wander about the garden of Wendy and Dave. That’s the beauty of the Gardening on the Edge weekend – you can see a variety of gardening approaches and take home some very useful ideas. So keep your weekend free on June 9 and 10, you won’t be disappointed. Painted poles add colour and interest

Jobs for the yard in April

What’s on for gardeners in April

• Plant sweet peas, snow peas, sugar snap peas, climbing peas and bush peas. Plant as either seed or seedlings into soil that has had some dolomite added. Maybe try asparagus peas. • Start to reduce the frequency you mow the lawn and start raising the blade height to allow the grass to keep a reasonable amount of leaf during the cooler months. • Fertilise your roses, especially if you haven’t done it for a few years. • It’s time to dig up, divide and replant your hippeastrum and lilium bulbs. • Bougainvillea cuttings can be taken now and struck in a good propagation mix. • Clean up the last of the summer vegetable crops. Use all the prunings, weeds and the remains of summer vegetables that have finished to start a compost heap. • Plant new pawpaw trees, apply some boron to existing plants at a rate of 20 grams per tree and spray them with a copper spray if black spot is seen. • Carefully cut off side shoots of bromeliads to create new plants. Plant these in the garden or in pots using a well-drained potting mix. Vegetables Plant beetroot, broccoli, radish, cabbage, leafy lettuce, carrot, celery, cauliflower, Asian greens, garlic, leeks, spring onion, potatoes, sweet potato, turnip, kohlrabi, capsicum, chilli, silver beet, beans and tomato. Flowers Plant alyssum, petunia, marigold, carnation, sweet pea, gaillardia, everlasting daisy, Livingstone daisy, sunflower, verbena, pansy, viola, primula, snapdragon, nemesia, Iceland poppy, dianthus, cleome and salvia.

• Elimbah-Caboolture Herb Club – April 6, 10am meeting at the Caboolture PCYC in Toovey Street, Caboolture. Call Ruth on 5496 7649 to find out more. • Glasshouse Country Orchid Society – April 12, 7.30pm at the RSL Hall in Glass House Mountains. Come a little earlier if you have plants you want to show off. New members are always welcome, so don’t be shy. Contact Robyn on 0427 138 168. • Native Plants Sunshine Coast – April 15, 9.30am at Mt Mellum to introduce our Propagation Project on myrtle rust resistant plants. For details contact Marie 5494 9187 or npscevents@gmail.com. • Hibiscus Society, Sunshine Coast Branch – April 8, 10am for morning tea followed by a meeting and bloom competition at 10.30am at the Woombye School of Arts Hall, Woombye. For more information, call Audrey on 5476 2771 or Ted on 0407 440 999.

• Faunawatch – April 11, 8am at Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens, Tanawha. Walk, survey wildlife, and learn about Faunawatch. Phone Paul on 0422 429 594 for details on how to get involved. • Peachester Garden Club – April 19, 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. Visitors and new members welcome. For information phone 5496 9169.

The number one question we get asked at this time of year is... “Can I still lay turf in Autumn?” The answer is YES! Autumn is such a great time of the year to lay turf. It makes perfect sense. The cooler days, mean less evaporation and stress on the plant and subsequently you. There is still plenty of warmth in the soil for the roots to take off and that’s exactly what turf loves. So don’t wait! Give the office a call today and speak to Jess or Jo to arrange your new lawn or a measure & quote. Call us on 1300 781 175 or Visit our website www.goturf.com.au

Sport Local softballers are winners

Contributed by Stephanie Harvey Both Glasshouse District Junior and Senior teams who competed at the recent Sunshine Coast Regional Softball Championship at Redcliffe came away as the Regional Softball Champions. Glasshouse District was represented by students from several local schools – Beerwah State High School, Glass House State School, Mooloolah State School, Elimbah State School and St Michael’s College. The Juniors finished first after the round robin portion of the carnival, winning all their games, before facing Coastal District in the final and winning 5-0. Congratulations to Amity FitzGerald who was voted Junior Player’s Player by her teammates for the second year in a row. Amity played pitcher and was cool under pressure with her power batting. Milli Watson was given the Junior Girls Coach’s Award for the “sponge-like” way she took advice and tips given to her. The Senior Girls were also undefeated after the round robin and played Noosa in the final, winning 9-2. Ruby Mackenzie was awarded the Player’s Player from the Senior Girls for her tenacious batting and running around the bases. Lola Boreham received the Most Improved award from the Senior Coaches. Her take off speed from the batter’s box was phenomenal and the selectors commented specifically about her speed around the bases. Indy Munro was voted Player’s Player from her team-mates. Indy was the Senior Girls Pitcher and has proudly been a part of the Glasshouse District Team for four years, starting as a nine year old. Special congratulations to Indy Munro, Rebecca Louw and Amity FitzGerald who were selected to compete at this year’s State Titles in Rockhampton in August. Indy was first selected in the Sunshine Coast Team as a ten year old in 2016 and has also represented Queensland in softball as both a 10 and 11 year old. Rebecca and Indy were both selected in 2017 as 11 year olds in the Sunshine Coast side. Amity was selected this year as an 11 year old from the Junior Division.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Whistlers had a comfortable win against Caloundra Racquettes yesterday at Witta. It was a young opposition bringing challenging pace and top spin. Though not reflected in the score line, we had long sets and lots of great rallies. Witta 7 sets, 47 games to Caloundra 1 set 19 games. The Wildcats were up against the undefeated Maroochydore Blue Bells. The wind and heat were again a factor. Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby came out fighting and what a fight it was. There were four 6-5 sets. We were the last teams left playing. We almost had to turn on the lights. In the end both teams were winners but only one could claim victory. Final score: 40-41. Maleny Bowls club

Softball Senior Girls

Softball Junior Girls 48

Contributed by Graeme Glover It was great to be able to get some bowls in this week. Thanks to those folks who supported our Tuesday morning and Friday Bowls. Unfortunately Wednesday night was washed out. See you this week as we welcome Miles back with many stories of another great central Australia expedition. Scroungers was tough because of the passing showers. Thanks to all for their persistence. You got it done. Thanks Joe and Doug for arrangements of games under testing situations and the refurbishment space made for a cosy gathering. Some good form shown by some burglars, John Long and Gary Darcy, Doug has now dealt with them and their handicap will guarantee they will not be in the winner’s box again soon. Well done all. Unfortunately our Monday Monthly pairs had to be cancelled because of the super renovations happening at the club. Thanks to all our regulars who have been through similar situations at their clubs. We hope to sign off on the project Tuesday. At the last board meeting we acknowledged the tremendous effort of volunteers and sponsors contribution in keeping facilities like ours still functioning in small communities like Maleny. Any folks who feel that a connection with our club could help their business please get in touch or come in and meet us and see our new facilities that are about to be completed. Maybe your business could use our space and bar facility. Multiple options are open and we try to make it work for you. What you spend with us stays local. Check out some new signage of locals that are contributing to our club. Thanks to members who support and buy local. The bowls club and the community benefit by your positive actions of spending locally. Bowling this Tuesday morning pairs and Wednesday night. All welcome. Reminder, there’s no trading Good Friday. From the Maleny Bowls Club Board to all our members and visitors, have a great Easter break with family and friends.

Beerwah Golf Club Ladies Results Contributed by Brenda Briese Finally the weather has cleared enough to have a competition, albeit a very small one! I took too much notice of the forecast last time and decided to cancel. Fourteen keen ladies played a Stroke competition in rather soggy conditions. The winner was Sonia Kenway 74 nett from Andrea Campbell on 76 nett. Good scores in the wet. NTP were: 2 and 5 both Fay Barry, 16 and 18 both Andrea Campbell. I think Andrea enjoyed a good day out! Ball run down went to 83 nett. Surely we can manage some dry weather for while so we can get back to the game we love, fingers crossed!

Beerwah Golf Club Men's results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme And still the rain falls. Last Wednesday only the first group stayed completely dry before the showers returned – Dick Rees led a trio around in three hours to beat the rain by minutes. Once again our Totalspan Sheds sponsored Blue Marker Challenge was a sodden affair with only 65 starters in two grades. Neil Swann (hcp 13) was the sole man to beat his handicap, winning division one with a nett 70. He beat popular Kiwi Wayne Maw (5) by three. In division two, Barry Collett (19) squeezed out Jim McGrory (20) on countback. Both scored 73. NTP: 2 – Rob Eccles, 5 – Charlie Bevan, 16 – Terry Smith, 18 – Neil Swann (a great day, Neil!).

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday March 21: Ladies Championship Fours Final. Finally after so much rain the ladies completed their Club Championship 4s. Well done to Chris Dougan, Lee Meyers, Di Garland and Jan Lawson who defeated Eileen Pierce, Lyn Griffiths, Viv James and Di Hume 26-4. Social: 16 players did turn up for a game but it just was not worth finishing in the wet weather. Thursday March 22: Social, we actually got to bowl, happy days. Winners of the day were Trevor Dennis and David Wiley with 2 wins + 26 score. Winners of the loser were Rob Scullion and Mac Townson with + 15 in the second game. Lucky draw went to Don Tierney and Chuckles

The course had dried out a little for Saturday's single Stableford, but overnight rain kept the fairways playing long. At least the staff have been able to shorten most of the rough in the past week. Craig Walters (12) had the best round in A grade, 41 points. He beat Simon Reeves by a point. In B grade, Ron Turner came home with 37, one ahead of Ian Wilson (17). James Rengger (22), a visitor from Caboolture, had the round of the day. He scored an excellent 43 points to beat Norm McIntyre (25) by one and win C grade. NTP: 2 – Karl Smith, 5 – Simon Reeves, 16 – Craig Walters, 18 – Corey Wallyn.

Pashby. The Men’s Pairs have closed and been drawn; 15 teams is a great turnout. Remember this Thursday and the Fours nominations will close. The Monday Monthly 2 Bowl Triples starts on April 23 then every fourth Monday of the month after that. Starting time is 10.30am with lunch included for the cost of $15 each. Usually a fun and chilled day with teams from others clubs visiting. Hope you all get behind and support it. Get your teams together now. Easter weekend is upon us so everyone have a safe holiday. The Saturday after that will be the last round of Hinterland with the men’s pairs to start 9am Sunday April 8.

Just for Laughs A man was driving along the highway, when he saw the Easter Bunny hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid the bunny, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of his car and was hit. The driver, being a sensitive man and an animal lover, stopped the car and much to his dismay, the Easter Bunny was dead. The driver felt guilty and began to cry. A woman driving down the same highway saw the man crying and pulled over and asked the man what was wrong? "I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny and killed it.

ARIES March 21 - April 20 You are now open to sudden attractions that raise the level of excitement and the Universe is so glad to supply them to you. If there are some obstacles or restrictions that pit you up against some government department, wait until after mid April when Mercury will finish its retrograde. Saturn rules government, so things are changing! TAURUS April 21 - May 21 With the planet Mars now moving through the sign of Capricorn it certainly helps you to not fritter away your finances but in fact will supply you with ambition and drive. Capricorn goes well with your sign and Mars may lead you to a business trip after mid April that leads you to success and prosperity. Excitement is brewing behind the scenes now! GEMINI May 22 - June 23 If you feel like letting it all out, at the end of this month, it is probably because of a Venus/ Uranus conjunction. Now add that to the excitement of the Full Moon, everything then brings lively interactions between yourself and others’ social freedom. At least with Venus and Uranus in grounding Taurus energies, you feel pulled into the world with ideals. CANCER June 24 - July 22 This may turn out to be one of your best weeks for the year as prospects for encounters, in both the personal and professional realm, are exciting. There is also the possibility of a change in employment dynamics, however take note, there are always delays or some form of restriction because Mercury is still retrograde as well as Saturn. Just let off steam now!

What should I do?" The woman told the man not to worry. She knew exactly what to do. She went to her car trunk, and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead bunny, and sprayed the entire contents of the can onto the little furry animal. Miraculously, the Easter Bunny came to back life, jumped up, and hopped on down the road. The man was astonished and said, "What in heaven's name is in your spray can?" The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said: "Hair spray – it restores life to dead hair.”

LEO July 23 - August 22 The full moon at the weekend is across your communication and travel sectors. You may probably read articles relating to travel and this may be places that bring you a sense of excitement. The planets are aligned to try something new, different and uninhibited! It also just so happens that your body needs disciplined care and detoxing is powerful. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 With both Jupiter and Mercury retrograding it is a time to scale back a bit. As the month closes out, Venus enters the sign of Taurus and joins up with Uranus, also doing the same thing. All of that gives you the urge to travel for pleasure. The Full Moon over the weekend can bring relationships and financial interests to a climax in the next couple of weeks. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 There may be unusual connections and temporary new friends, rather than traditional ones, as the month closes out with a Venus/ Uranus conjunction. These give you the joy of free spirited excitement. Two retrogrades, namely Jupiter and Mercury, are saying it is time to scale back and not to open your mouth and put your big foot in it! You feel assertive. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Whether it is due to people you already know, or to the new ones you are about to encounter, this week should be anything but dull. Just relax if there are any minor upsets as Jupiter and Mercury may see someone completely misunderstanding where you are coming from. A strange attraction fascinates you due to Venus being opposite your sign.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 Just get ready for excitement and fresh experiences this week, both in your social interactions and personal relationships. You just may get lucky with a super bundle of sudden love, and the thrill of it all! There is an enthusiastic drive by Mars to move something forward. Probably to do some renovations. The Full Moon weekend is a working bonanza! CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 A wonderful week to come with Venus working together with the planet Uranus by the weekend. That means you can look for something lucky and surprising. Mercury is still retrograde, however, so certain loved ones may bring up unresolved issues from the past. Everything is all good, but it is wise not to push your luck. The Full Moon resolves problems. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Just relax a lot till the end of the month as Mercury retrogrades in the sign of Aries. Normally that would give you a new adventure, but this time it is going back to relax in past happy situations. Sometimes a Full Moon brings you positive news but, nevertheless, wait until mid-April to make decisions after a couple of debates and overseas exchanges. PISCES February 20 - March 20 You can plan this week on getting some real work done, or just enjoying yourself with the best remedies available. An expected opportunity may arise because the planets Venus and Uranus are getting together to give you some exciting and joyful socialising. The Full Moon has a spotlight on your financial dealings and events, you should do well.
