Christmas yarn bombing complete
By Lea Parkes Last Sunday the traditional Christmas yarn bombing of the tree outside the GC&M News office was completed featuring a new colour theme that is once again visually spectacular! All of the creative work has been done by Beerburrum’s most avid knitter, Lottie Nisbett, and this year she has gone with a gleaming gold theme.
On Sunday, Lottie directed her installation crew - made up of GC&M News duo Brownie and me, as well as her devoted husband John and grand-daughter Jenniffer Maynard - as to how each piece should be positioned. So, on behalf of everyone who drives down Coonowrin Road at Glass House Mountains in the coming weeks, thanks Lottie for bringing a slightly different interpretation of the

Hi Everyone...
What's Happening December 2018
on the Cover
At GC&M News we like to mark the official launch of the festive season with our annual yarn bombing of the Christmas tree outside our office, which you will have noticed is featured on this week’s cover. So, with Christmas now less than a month away it is official - the festive season is here! With so many Christmas celebrations happening locally I have decided to bring all things Christmas together and if you check out pages 20–22 you will find a comprehensive guide to your local Christmas happenings. We will continue with these Christmas pages for the rest of the year as well as featuring photos after the events. If you have a good photo (with a caption) that you would like included please email it to editorial@gcnews.com.au or you can Instagram it #gcmnews. We are also keen to share the locations of homes that have been decorated with Christmas lights. It isn’t a competition, just a way of sharing the joy. Let us know your address if you would like to be included on our Christmas lights listing to be published in the December 12 and 19 editions – give the office a call or email reception@gcnews.com.au. Regards, Lottie Nisbett with her crew of yarn-bombing installers - grand-daughter Jenniffer Maynard, Lea Parkes, John Nisbett and Greg Brown For more details see Lea’s column above

Local News High spirits in Landsborough for Tidy Towns 2018 Landsborough has struck gold in the Queensland Tidy Towns competition this year, winning the Community Spirit award from environmental movement Keep Queensland Beautiful. The historic community of Landsborough impressed the Tidy Town judges, wowing them with the ‘Landsborough – love where we live’ campaign. ‘Landsborough – love where we live’ is run by a group of residents who work towards protecting the community from unnecessary over development. The unique campaign is focused on keeping the country town charm that makes Landsborough a desirable place to live and raise a family. Celebrating 50 years, Tidy Towns is Keep Queensland Beautiful’s flagship program and it continues to reward the sustainable actions taken every day by Queenslanders. The accreditation and awards program recognises the hard work often taken for granted or overlooked in towns across Queensland. Tidy Towns is more than just a beauty contest, says David Curtin, CEO of Keep Queensland Beautiful. “From its humble beginnings, Tidy Towns has morphed into a much more complex competition – a tidy town is a community that works together to achieve outcomes that enhance and protect the natural environment, build community spirit and that implements sustainable practices and programs

Dawn Fraser swaps swimmers for golf clubs Contributed by Richard Owen Olympic swimming legend Dawn Fraser swapped her swimmers for golf clubs last week to launch the upcoming PGA Legends Pro-Am at Maleny Golf Club in her capacity as brand ambassador for naming rights sponsor Live Life Group. Ms Fraser, a keen golfer, praised Maleny Golf Club’s committee and membership for all they had achieved since her last visit to the site when there was nothing but a driving range and small practise green in place. “It’s really beautiful up here and I can’t believe what they’ve done in just eight years,” Ms Fraser said of the award-winning course, which recently expanded from nine to 12 holes. The tournament, to be held at Maleny’s picturesque golf course on Saturday, December 15, has an increased pro prize purse of $15,000, while amateurs could win a $16,000 car from Pacific Ford by scoring a hole-in-one. Retirement living, eco-retreat and travel business Live Life Group recommitted as naming rights sponsor following the overwhelming success of last year’s inaugural event. More than 60 tour regulars have entered for this year, including defending title holder Colin Hunt and current order of merit leaders Tim Elliott, Brad Burns and Mike Harwood.

Club president Dr Max Whitten said the committee was excited to again be teaming up with Live Life Group to bring the Legends Tour back to the hinterland. “We received terrific feedback last year from all the players, the PGA and our sponsors, and it’s very encouraging to attract the continuing support of all involved to help us cement this tournament as a premier annual fixture on the region’s golfing and event calendar,” he said. Spectators are welcome and the course offers some excellent elevated vantage points to sit and follow the action.

Bruce Highway access lane permanently closed Motorists beware … if you want to travel from Steve Irwin Way south on the Bruce Highway at the Caloundra Road interchange, you now have to take the long way around. As part of the ongoing Bruce Highway widening project, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is slowly changing the road network structure between the Steve Irwin Way/Caloundra Road and Sunshine Coast Motorway intersections. With the closure last week of the right turn lane at the Caloundra Road interchange to travel southbound onto the Bruce Highway, the TMR suggests either continuing on Caloundra Road to the Racecourse Road overpass, then turning off and looping back onto Caloundra Road to take the left-hand lane exit onto the Bruce Highway. Alternatively, travel down Steve Irwin Way to Roys Road, then across to the Bells Creek interchange. Locals will know two alternatives also exist to gain southbound access to the Bruce Highway. The first is to go onto the Aussie World service road, then under the highway onto Pignata Road where it merges onto the Bruce Highway southbound. For those near Landsborough, you can also travel down Forestry Road, onto Dianella Road, which then connects to the Bells Creek interchange. Whichever way you go, don’t forget to add a little time to your trip planning when heading south on the Bruce Highway from the northern end of our region. In the meantime, traffic interruptions will continue on other roads in the area.
TMR regional director Barbara van Heerden said temporary traffic changes at the northern end of Steve Irwin Way at Glenview would continue while a new intersection was built. “The westbound lanes on Steve Irwin Way are currently closed with traffic flow being maintained using the eastbound lanes, with one lane open in each direction,” she said. “The new intersection will connect motorists to the new western service road between Glenview and Sippy Downs.”

Work is progressing on upgrades to Glass House Mountains National Park after the Queensland Government allocated $3.03 million to improve walking tracks, picnic areas, carparks and a lookout. Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch said the number of visitors to Glass House Mountains National Park was increasing every year and the Palaszczuk government was committed to providing more recreation options and improving safety. The upgrades, due to finish by mid-2020, include upgrades of the Mount Tibrogargan walking tracks and day-use area in Glass House
Mountains National Park, and the Coochin Creek campground and day-use area at nearby Beerburrum State Forest. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is working on consultation with traditional owners on these upgrades. “Planning has started on an upgrade of the Glass House Mountains lookout and on concepts for upgrading the track network at Mount Ngungun,” Ms Enoch said. “Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is also working with local groups to continue to develop and enhance mountain biking opportunities at Beerwah State Forest.”

Upgrade for Beerwah intersection announced DENTURE CLINIC Planning is under way for a major upgrade of the Peachester Road intersection with Old Gympie Road to improve safety near Beerwah State School, including the installation of traffic lights. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the Palaszczuk government had committed $4 million to address concerns about visibility, safety of pedestrians and crash risks at the busy intersection. “We went to the 2017 election with a commitment to fix this junction and we are making good on that commitment,” Mr Bailey said. “That’s why I promised to install lights and make other safety improvements and why the Palaszczuk government is keeping that promise.
“With more than 7500 vehicles using KilcoyBeerwah Road daily, improving traffic flow and safety is a priority. We have listened to the community and are taking steps to determine the most suitable configuration to improve safety and performance. “With Beerwah State School located at the intersection, we need to ensure we find the best solution to improve safety for all road users, including the school community who use it frequently,” Mr Bailey said. It is anticipated planning will be complete by mid2019, with design to follow in late 2019. Mr Bailey said key stakeholders would be engaged throughout the design phase.

Business News Easton Lawyers light up again
Update with Nicole Hilton Chamber President
Once again this year Maleny locals and visitors can look forward to the Easton Lawyers building being all lit up. This year is the 28th time the spectacular Christmas light display will happen, with the lights offically going on on Thursday night, November 29. You won't want to miss it!
New industry complex on Moroney Place
The Beerwah light industrial mix is about to grow with an application submitted to Sunshine Coast Council last week to redevelop the old Moroney Landscaping site. Currently housing a landscaping supplies operation, the site owner Themi Pty Ltd has plans to turn it into a major retail and trade centre, along with an industrial park consisting of eight separate light industry tenancies plus a possible café. The 6,647m2 site on Moroney Place has the correct zoning for this style of development, meaning that the application has been deemed as ‘code assessable’. According to the planning report, the proposal is consistent with and meets all the planning requirements for the local area and for the planning zone. Along with the retail showroom, trade centre and associated offices, the site will house eight large tenancies, each with a mezzanine level. If the café is approved, it will be a first in the Beerwah industrial complex on the eastern side of Steve Irwin Way. The property owner and developer said it was hoped the new complex would be constructed and ready for business within two years.
So, another year for the Chamber of Commerce ends. Even though it feels like we just started we have had ten breakfast meetings, ten executive meetings and a mountain - and I mean a big mountain - of emails going to and fro between your executives, businesses, local and state governments and everything in between. This year, my first year as president, was at times challenging but for the most part a very rewarding volunteer experience. I speak for the rest of our executive who would agree with me that our volunteer time is never wasted when working for the Chamber of Commerce. Our intention is to be an advocate for local business, to share important information from government and industry as well as local events and happenings. Our newsletters are always packed full to ensure our members are kept up to date. This year we have battled the parking issues around the Maleny CBD and championed for a major events calendar and local events calendar, one of which has been launched with the other on the way. We were able to bring you information on the new international airport and what this means for the hinterland, introduce you to your local economic development officer to help with your small business needs and show you how to get the best from social media for your business. We’ve supported local events by helping organisers spread the word and keep businesses up to date with what to expect when an event comes to town. We worked with council to finish the playground in Cooke Park. There is just so much that I don’t have enough space to list it all. I wanted to show that being part of a Chamber of Commerce is very worthwhile. I’m extremely proud of our team, we work well together and we all bring something different to the table, which in business and life is extremely important. It has been a pleasure serving as your president. To sign off for the year I thank you all and hope that you have seen the importance of your chamber in our town. Don’t forget our final event for the year - the Maleny Chamber of Commerce Maleny Christmas Festival – is on Friday, December 14 from 5.30pm, closing our main street to enjoy all things Christmas. Until next year stay safe, enjoy your loved ones this Christmas and happy New Year.

Edsel Ward
Adventures from a past era
By Sonia Clark Montville author Edsel Ward has chronicled the incredible adventure that he and his good friend Keith Basset undertook from Asia to Europe in the early 1960s in two ‘Scooter Nomads’ books. Beautifully capturing the true spirit of intrepid travel, the two volumes are based on Edsel’s diary entries detailing the 12-month overland journey that traversed two vast continents and 38,000 kms. Harking back to an era of serendipitous travel during a time when espionage and intrigue was a reality for a world caught in the grip of the Cold War, the journey of these two young Brisbane men and their motor scooter ‘Mirrabooka’ evoke an exciting essence of adventure unfamiliar to many travellers of today. The fact that overland access to many of the countries detailed in the books is now much more restrictive forms part of the great appeal of these stories, as well as a living example of how fortune favours the brave and those that decide to give it a go. GC&M News caught up with 88-year-old Edsel recently to chat about the books and the incredible stories they contain that still evoke strong memories for him almost 60 years down the track. Q: How did these books come about? During the trip from 1960-61, I kept a great diary and wrote everything up. When I eventually returned to Australia my girlfriend (who later became my wife) Lorraine typed it all up, which
took a couple of years, and the first manuscript was completed in 1963. This then sat untouched for many years as married life, our three children and work became my focus. My youngest son Ewan found it and in the early 2000s edited it and presented a hard copy version to me, 37 years after the original version. One day a friend came across this version, said it was a great read and suggested that I look into publishing it. I decided to self-publish the first book which covered our journey from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to Constantinople (Istanbul) and sold copies locally. People would ring up wanting to know more about what happened after as well as what happened to the scooter, so I put together the second book as a follow up. Q: Where did you meet your travelling companion Keith? Keith and I met through the Brisbane Bushwalkers Club. He was ex-army and a few years older than me but we got along well. I had been planning an overland trip from Ceylon, up the east coast of India, Pakistan, Persia and Iraq and onto Turkey, Istanbul and then through Europe. When I talked about it with Keith he was keen for the adventure. All up it took us about six months to plan, sending away to embassies for maps and getting all the visas and documentation sorted. The three of us - ‘Mirrabooka’, Keith and I - then travelled by ship - The Fairsky - to Ceylon to start our journey.
Q: Why did you decide to travel by scooter? We wanted to be able to get off the beaten track on our journey and we originally looked into buying a motorbike. At that time, there was not much around following the war so we ended up settling on a Japanese fluid drive 200cc ‘Rabbit’ motor scooter because it was affordable and we could both fit on it. We then spent some time getting it ready for the trip. We had special panniers made to carry our equipment, which included our rucksacks, tent and canvas waterbags. Q: What prompted you to do this trip? Growing up my favourite stories were always about explorers and adventurers. I wasn’t that good at school but I was good at geography and history. I loved walking and climbing and I always wanted to go exploring. I guess I’ve always had an adventurous spirit. ‘Scooter Nomads’ and ‘Scooter Nomads: Book two’ are available from Rosetta Books Maleny and Montville Newsagents

Community News Revisiting the good old days By Sonia Clark
Glass House Mountains comedian Kenny Bennett has just published a fictional novel set in post World War II Port Melbourne. ‘The Barretts of Baghdad’ features a cast of intensely colourful characters for whom mateship, family and loyalty underpin their daily hurdles, pitfalls, joy and tears of everyday lives. The book will appeal to those who can remember ‘the good old days’ of the 1950s (and may have forgotten some of the not so good old days). If you are too young to remember, the book invites the reader to understand what their parents and grandparents reminisced about. This is Kenny’s second book – his first ‘Kenny Bennett: A funny bugger’ was an autobiographical account of growing up in Port Melbourne. Kenny is quick to point out his latest novel is a work of fiction but some characters or events can be loosely drawn from his own nostalgia and experience of the world around the wharves. Given the colourful subject matter, Kenny has already had interest in the story being developed into a mini series and, in some ways, this novel was created as the basis for a screenplay. Kenny has done stand-up comedy at venues between here and Melbourne and has spent the past ten years doing cruising comedy shows. “I started to write this novel around two to three years ago when I had my downtime on the ships – it stopped me from getting bored between shows,” Kenny said. The novel is set to be launched in Melbourne in mid-December. However, locals can get their hands on a copy via Kenny’s website www.kennybennettcomic.com.
Kindness matters
‘Kindness matters’ is the theme for this year’s Lions International Peace Poster Competition, now in its 31st year. The contest encourages students to think about peace, tolerance and international understanding. The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range ran the local competition at the River School Maleny, won by year 5 student Madonna Piri who received a $50 voucher for Rosetta Books. Year 6 student Jacob Samorowski received an honourable mention certificate and received a $20 bookshop voucher. The competition had 29 entries from students in years 5 and 6 and a further eight students displayed their designs. The judges included local artists Kay Leach and Nicky Carey, and Joanne Howard of Maleny Art Direct, who had the difficult task of choosing the winning entry. All students were given the opportunity to talk about what kindness meant to them through their art work and were presented with a certificate of participation. The Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club wishes Madonna well as her poster advances through the judging, where she will compete with students from across the globe.

Artspace at Maleny Library
Maleny rides in memory of Cam Contributed by Jenny Allen Sunshine Coast local Cameron Frewer was one of Australia’s most passionate advocates for cyclist safety and the ‘share the road’ message. It was tragic news when he was recently hit by a car and killed. The Maleny Lycra Lizards recently joined around 150 cyclists in a heartfelt memorial ride for Cam. His wife, Catherine, and three children bravely met cyclists at the finishing point. Catherine, visibly emotional, said Cameron was her life and no one deserved to die on the roads. She is now speaking out, becoming Cameron’s voice. “Cameron would say to me ‘if anything happens you go in there and fight and do everything you can’ and that’s what I’m going to do. I’m hoping Cameron’s death is going to push this to the brink and he has made a difference,” Catherine said. “I would say please respect everyone on the road everyone - a motorbike, a cyclist - those people in particular because they are more vulnerable.
“Be patient, drive with less hate and bullying. Cameron said most drivers are polite and courteous, but I ask that small percentage who aren’t to drive more sensibly. Learn the rules and only pass when you really do know it’s safe to do so. Just be fair, drive fairly, the road is there for everyone,” Catherine said. Cameron was just a normal 44-year-old father who loved riding his bike. “He would always follow the rules and stop at the red lights, with lights and cameras on his bike. He was doing everything right …and was gone in a flash.” Catherine’s words resonated with the Lycra Lizards. They feel most drivers in the hinterland area are very respectful, but some are not and they have had a number of near-fatal incidents. They just ask drivers to be patient and stay wide. Legally, drivers must leave a 1m space when passing a cyclist in a 60kph zone and 1.5m when in a faster zone … a small ask when compared to a needless loss of life.
Throughout December Maleny Library will be hosting two very different art exhibitions - one from Jenny Mortimer in acrylics and mixed media and the other coloured glass work by Maleny artist Marc Kalifa. Jenny is a self-taught artist working with acrylic and mixed media such as modelling compound, gel, inks and crayons. Recently Jenny has been creating pop art using framed dresses and gloves that are spray-painted and pasted onto board. She adds texture by stencilling patterns or flowers very thickly, then paints or rubs over with colour. The theme of these works is 'Movement'. Marc was born in Paris, France in 1951 and migrated to Australia in 1974. He started working with glass by designing and making large stained-glass windows, wishing that one day he would be able to make his own coloured glass. A visit to several hot glass studios in Europe motivated him in 1985 to build his home studio in Maleny. Marc has spent the past 30 years experimenting with the endless possibilities offered by blown and cast glass. His blown glass works are strongly influenced by the Australian environment and its ancient Indigenous culture, while his sand cast works allow him to use contrasting textures, exposed against the translucence and refracting qualities of glass.

Each year the Beerwah CWA supports the recognition of one year 11 or 12 student from one of the local high schools who has made great contributions to our local community. The recipient of the 2018 CWA Community Service Award was year 11 student Ariana Doolan from Glasshouse Christian College. As well as maintaining high grades, Ariana was a national finalist in Australia’s Teen Queen, a pageant dedicated to charity and uplifting self-confidence. She used this opportunity to try to help the community as much as she could and became an advocate for Destiny Rescue, raising funds across Brisbane and at youth rallies. Ariana also ran a personal development program at Caboolture High School, aimed at improving students’ self-worth and personal growth. She was part of the launch of the Positive Human Movement and helped the City Point Church with its Cambodian fundraiser. She has also raised $2500 towards the GCC Pay-4-Hay helping our struggling Aussie farmers.
Beerwah Lions
Contributed by Bob Banner The November dinner meeting of the Beerwah Lions Club was a special evening for two members who received awards for long-term membership - veteran Lion John Cruikshank for 51 years of service, and treasurer Errol James for 36 years of service. President of the ladies auxiliary Gail Farran reported on the activities of the auxiliary, including their catering at the recent Remembrance Day ceremony. Guest speaker for the evening was Annelize Van Niekerk from the Queensland Cancer Council who gave a comprehensive talk on the work the Cancer Council does to improve the lives of cancer patients, including patient care, prevention and early detection, with improved survival outcomes. She also expressed the gratitude of the Cancer Council to our local community for all the hard work that went into the recent Charity Sports Day, an event that donated just over $26,000 for the fight against cancer. Presbyterian Church hall refurbished
Summer reads at Sunshine Coast Libraries
Recently the refurbished hall at the Maleny Pastor Scott Kroeger Presbyterian Church was officially opened by Cr with Cr Jenny McKay Jenny McKay. The refurbishment project has seen the hall’s kitchen completed as well as a larger hall with air-conditioning, sound mitigation, updated toilets, floor polishing, mirrors for ballet classes and a lounge for waiting parents. The work was completed using funds from the church, along with a grant of $10,000 from the Sunshine Coast Council. The vision for the hall’s refurbishments started when Scott Kroeger came to the church in 2015 as the pastor with his wife Nancy. The Presbyterian Church has a long history in Maleny with its first church service taking place in a private home back in February 1917. It wasn’t until September 11, 1939 that a church building was built and opened for worship in Cedar St. In 1948 plans were drawn up for the church hall, by 1950 it was officially opened and in 1955 it was extended to its present size. Throughout the years various groups have made use of the hall. Thanks goes to the Sunshine Coast Council for its funding program for community projects, and for all those who have helped and encouraged the project, particularly Cr Jenny McKay for doing the official opening duties.

Hinterland Kids Scout’s den gets a freshen up
Police visit kindy
Contributed by Kali Pearson At their recent weekend camp, the Cub Scouts, Scouts and Venturer Scouts of the Landsborough Scout Group had their first daylight opportunity to see the fresh paint job of their Rocky Creek Den. The Landsborough Scout group owe an enormous thank you to Bunnings Caloundra and to Taubmans for enabling the painting to go ahead. With Taubmans donating the paint and Bunnings Caloundra donating all the paining supplies, it was then up to the Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Leaders and community volunteers to get the job done. All sections of Landsborough Scout Group meet at the Rocky Creek Scout campsite on Old Gympie Road, Landsborough during term time. The Joeys (5-7 years - must be in at least year 1) meet on Monday nights from 6-7pm. Cub Scouts (8-10 years) meet on Tuesday nights from 6-7:30pm, and Scouts (11-14 years) and Venturer Scouts (15-17 years) meet on Thursday nights from 6-8pm. Senior Constable Susan Lowndes and Constable Fiona Sandon enjoyed a rock star’s entrance as the kindy friends were enthralled by their squad car. The officers spoke to the children about how to stay safe in and around cars. Beerwah Kindergarten co-director Rebecca Mackintosh said they were reminded not to distract

Take a Break Playgroup
Contributed by Diane Gudgeon Our group, which meets at the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church, will finish for the Christmas holidays on November 28 with a lovely break-up party day. We will return again on January 29, 2019 and we will be back with bells on! This has been a super year, our mums are beautiful and the children lovely and special. The love present at this playgroup can only be from God.

We were also able to see the lights and hear the police siren.”
So with care and excitement we look forward not only to the break-up but to the New Year. You Said It Speeding in car parks
I would like to bring to your readers’ attention the total disregard for other drivers in shopping centre car parks. It seems some people treat car parks as a race track. I have been constantly beeped at when attempting to back out of a parking space because some clown is driving at 50 or more kilometres per hour through the car park. Most of the offenders are younger drivers or women with a mobile phone in their hand who seem to think it’s their right to drive how they like. For the younger male drivers, anyone who gets in their way or hinders their progress gets the horn or the finger, and in some cases both, followed by a mouthful of abuse. It’s a car park and I’m sure somebody will correct me if I’m wrong, but to the best of my knowledge a 10kph speed limit applies in most, if not all car parks. It may come as a shock, but the entire world doesn’t revolve around you. A bit of common courtesy doesn’t cost anything. Put your mobile phones away and pay more attention to where you are and what you are doing. Peter Bowles Glass House Mountains
Re: Is it just me
I completely agree with the person who responded on the proposed dog kennels in Landsborough in GC&M News, November 21. I think in this day and age it is completely absurd and wrong to still be allowing these businesses to profit from 'puppy farming'. Time to educate ourselves some more and learn how to better manage this problem. I say a big no to this proposal. Adopt don't shop. Jillian Landsborough
Re: Development application
I refer to your recent article regarding the development at 138 King Road, Mooloolah Valley (GC&M News, November 14). Submissions were lodged with Sunshine Coast Council against the original form of this development complaining then that the lot sizes were too small (only four were more than the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme’s low density residential 1,000 square metre minimum). Having received approval for the original plans, it is extremely alarming that the developers are now applying to reduce lot sizes even further and convert it into a favela style ‘retirement village’ with characterless rectilinear huts on micro sections. The Mooloolah local plan code states that: “Development in the low density residential zone and rural residential zone, including road and lot layouts and streetscape, should reflect traditional rural town residential qualities such as low rise detached housing on large lots…”. Is it possible that the Sunshine Coast Council is in the thrall of developers’ commercial imperative to wring as much money as possible from their projects? If so, residents currently enjoying the small rural town that the Mooloolah local plan describes will soon find themselves living in a cramped, characterless suburb resembling nothing more than Beirut in the 1970s. Here, the axiom ‘no taxation without representation’ seems to have been run over by council in preferring the needs of developers over their rate-paying constituents, with every developer pointing to every earlier departure from the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme or local area plan as the gold standard, and council accepting without question gilded representations about the impact
on such things as the environment and traffic (such as no additional traffic will enter the dangerous unsealed Brandenburg Road from an additional 200 plus residents living around the corner). Sadly, as the examples of council’s incoherence mount up (think also NBN towers and Maleny petrol station) residents turn their attention to their last recourse - legal action and council election campaigning. Dean Rallison Mooloolah
Re: Quarry should be questioned
Thank you John Quinn (GC&M News, November 21) and I wholeheartedly agree with all you have said. There are indeed other important issues that are of grave concern with regard to Hanson Quarry. The corner of Old Gympie Road and Coonowrin Road is totally inadequate for the trucks that are using it, and consequently extremely dangerous. The major route to the Glass House Mountains lookout passes right through this intersection and it is essential that the safety of this corner is addressed. On August 20 this year, there was a blast by Hanson Quarry that was considered to be louder and greater in every aspect by several in the local community. The quarry was questioned but was not able to explain why. We sought the data for that blast through the Department of Environmental Services and Regulation. The data does show that the ground vibration was approximately 35% greater than the average of the previous four blasts – which is considerable. Now to the corner of Mt Beerwah Road and Old Gympie Road: What an eyesore we have there now! Yes, Hanson is landscaping and prettying it up, but they have removed the most valuable asset, the large trees that provided the camouflage needed for this ugly industrial site. Remember, this is the heart of a national heritage listed area. The latest news is that the quarry has had its operations suspended until the new year due to exceeding their annual quota, which I believe is 200,000 tonnes per year. As John Quinn stated last week, conditions in our magnificent tourist area have changed since the licences were granted to the quarry. The coexistence of the quarry and this beautiful national heritage listed area, which is attracting an ever-increasing number of tourists, needs to be seriously questioned. Louise Beckingsale Glass House Mountains
Counting the cost
The most important concept in the economics of climate change is the social cost of carbon. A paper from the National Academy of Sciences does the maths and predicts that the economic benefit of avoiding a tonne of CO2 in the atmosphere will, in 2020, be $58. They find that a solar panel scheme, which could take out that tonne, would cost $26. This is where we are at. We have to spend money to address waste, or carbon, or loss of fertile soil, or drying rivers, because we can calculate that the cost of not addressing the problem will be much higher. And if you hear people saying “climate change is a Marxist plot”, be patient. Calculus and chemistry are not universally appreciated. Gillian Pechey Maleny

The big day has finally arrived! It is time for our members to vote on our proposal for Queensland business Firstmac to acquire Maleny Credit Union. With the postal ballot open, we need everyone to have their say now. We are going to send you an Information Memorandum with information about the transaction and a voting form. If you have sent back an electronic consent, please keep an eye on your email inbox. If not, keep an eye on your mailbox. I have been talking to a lot of members about the acquisition lately – in the street, at our meetings and on Facebook – and their response has been really supportive. We have known for quite a while that we can’t keep going as we are with ever-increasing costs from new regulations and mandatory technology upgrades.

Christmas News Independent school
We all know that the people of Obi Obi are resilient, a bit different and, of course, very good looking. So it's time to raise our children in an independent school that reflects the glory of our locality. We are proposing the kind of primary school that will grow its own food for lunch, have a siesta afterwards and then write a review of how the student chefs performed. We need to form a committee to get this show on the road and are looking for expressions of interest for all positions. The school is going to be as free as possible and will rely heavily on our wonderful resource of older people to pass on their skills in the afternoons. Even the patience and attention that an older person can give is such an incalculable gift to a small child. We want to help create children who are entrepreneurs and intelligent in a way that only practical hands-on learning can provide. Long-term goals include pottery, animal husbandry, restaurant and orientation courses, a printing press anything the kids can dream and imagine. Let's allow the kids some dirt playing and challenging situations. Instead of dumping them into an institution let’s work hard for their education. If this sounds like an exciting idea and you would like to become part of the committee or just express your interest, please call Melissa on 0490 215 632. Melissa Van Kenyon Obi Obi

By Sonia Clark Once again Glasshouse Country Community Carols is set to go off with a bang, with the family friendly event returning to the Beerwah Sportsgrounds on Saturday, December 15 from 4.30-8.30pm. This year industry veteran Bob Burns takes over the reins as the event manager, coming to the role from a strong background in festival and community event management. Bob is excited to be leading a team of volunteers and talented local musicians and community contributors to put together what promises to be a joyous festive season celebration. Bob says he looks forward to building community spirit and loves being part of events that bring the community together in celebration. “This year we have decided to return to the sportsgrounds to allow plenty of room for families to bring a picnic blanket and camp chairs, relax and spread out,” Bob said. Renowned vocal conductor Brian Martin will be directing the production this year, which will feature two choirs – a 'house' choir and a combined community choir - singing festive season favourites and popular arrangements. Crowd favourite 'Spilt Milk', along with numerous fine local musicians and local school performances, will all combine to make this a memorable night not to be missed. Bob says the grand finale leading into the fireworks promises to be very special indeed, with a bit of Aussie country character. There will also be a bunch of food trucks and vendors guaranteed to tickle the taste buds, jumping castle, giant snow globe, face painting and heaps more. Additional volunteers on the day will be welcomed. For more details please visit the community carols Facebook page - Glasshouse Country Community Carols.

Health Check Stressed? Constantly tired? Unable to find that motivation? With Sallyann Stewart form Natural Therapies Studio Adrenal fatigue may be a contributing factor to these problems. Adrenal fatigue is a term given to sub-optimally functioning adrenal glands. When under stress the adrenal glands release pulses of cortisol. Once upon a time this fight-or-flight response helped us to survive. Nowadays we live in an era that constantly puts us in fight-or-flight mode causing our cortisol to be constantly elevated. Over time, this need for heightened cortisol places strain on our adrenal glands and causes what is known as cortisol dysregulation. Signs of cortisol dysregulation include morning exhaustion and late night insomnia, craving salty and sugary foods, 3pm energy slump, foggy thinking, increased susceptibility to infection and an inability to handle stress. Book in for a consultation to discuss natural remedies that can help regulate cortisol production and support the adrenal glands.

Summer 1993
Writer-director Carla Simon paints a sensitive yet understated portrait of six-year-old Frida who is dealing with the grief and confusion of losing her mother. To add to the child's emotional upheaval, she has been moved from metropolitan Barcelona to a completely different life in rural Catalonia, where she is living with her aunt and uncle and their four-year-old daughter Ana. Although the family is caring and attentive, Frida experiences an inexpressible sense of displacement and grief. Summer 1993 is actually Simon's own story, so it's not surprising that her portrayal of a child's grief and isolation is entirely convincing - and heart-breaking. The local community's grudging acceptance of Frida is tainted by the fact her mother died from AIDS-related pneumonia - adding another layer to the child's confusion. The two girls, Frida (Laia Artigas) and Ana (Paula Robles) are impeccably cast in this authentic portrayal of grief, which deftly avoids descending into sentimentality. Simon's critically acclaimed, much-awarded debut movie is filmed in Spanish with English sub-titles. Magnificent Magnificats
From sold out performances to a standing ovation at the Woodford Folk Festival, the Maleny-based Inspiration Project Choir and Orchestra will next perform a glorious program of Magnificats in the sparkling acoustic venue of the Nambour Uniting Church. Under the direction of Kim Kirkman the choir has had great success in the last few years due, in part, to the long lead time of rehearsals. "The choir has been working on these pieces for around five months," said Kim. The program will also feature Kim playing a Vivaldi violin concerto with the orchestra. There are two performances: Friday, November 30 at 7pm and Sunday, December 2 at 2pm at the Nambour Uniting Church, 37 Coronation Ave, Nambour. Tickets are $15. For bookings phone 0411 425 793 or www.trybooking.com/YPVR or tickets can be bought at the door.

Living - Arts Lara’s mindful of beauty
Maleny-based artist Lara Cooper - a dynamic painter of all mediums with a unique vision for artistic storytelling - is about to have her fourth solo exhibition ‘Mindful of beauty’. This will be her first Queensland exhibition and, more importantly, the first in her new home town. Lara began painting almost 12 years ago under the tutelage of renowned watercolour painter Charles Sluga. Her work is described as unique, fresh and meaningful, both in subject and technique. Lara believes that her work is best described as “snapshots” of life through portraiture, still life and figure painting. Since taking up painting she has made several trips to Asia, including living for a year in northern Thailand. Lara said that spending time with ordinary people in developing countries

allowed her to nurture a deepening concern for issues of justice. She also recently completed a degree in intercultural studies. Using painting as the expression of her concern for a more beautiful world, her work captures a complex mix of the real alongside the longed-for and imagined. Lara has received many awards for her work, including the Kernewek Lowender Art Prize in 2013. Earlier this year she finalised two years of illustration work on a beautiful children’s book by Rosanne Hawke, which will be published early next year. The exhibition is a series of watercolour, oil and acrylic paintings that are a vibrant yet peaceful collection of work asking the viewer to slow down and soak in the ordinary things that make life meaningful and beautiful. The exhibition will be at Sarah’s Unplugged from December 6 to February 5, so drop into the café in Maple Street and take a look at Lara’s work yourself.

By Graeme Lean Abandoned buildings hold a particular fascination. They represent the dreams and aspirations of a foregone era that have succumbed to failure or been left behind with the steady march of modernisation. This old church in rural Saskatchewan represents the effects of progress. Once it was the centre of a thriving community of family farms when this region was being developed. Nowadays the farms are amalgamating and better roads mean that the few people still living here can easily drive to the larger churches in the nearby cities. This old church and its attached graveyard are one of the reminders of the pioneering families that battled the elements and isolation to turn Saskatchewan into a modern day economic success. Have you heard of the ‘floppy sprinkler’? Most people haven’t, but it could be poised to be the next big thing in efficient irrigation and watering. The revolutionary design of the sprinkler is remarkable. It has one small moving part, so no wear and tear. It delivers water in uniform 3mm sized droplets with no misting. It covers a circle 14m across – that’s 154sq.m. It uses 40% less water than other standard sprinklers. It works in low or high pressure systems. It has an inbuilt flow controller, so it delivers exactly the same amount and rate of water no matter what. The simple design is made up of a hard outer case that houses a silicone tube. The floppy tube rises up and out the top when the tap is turned on. The floppy silicone tube then flails about in a structured pattern, creating the even droplet distribution. The watering system is really useful for larger areas of grass or large garden beds. It is particularly good for horticultural and tree crops. It can be mounted on a stand on the ground or up to any height using a riser pipe – so it can be made to mimic rainfall from above tree foliage if wanted. If you’d like to see them in action, head down to the Glasshouse Garden Centre on Steve Irwin Way (opposite the Pineapple Patch Chinese Restaurant) and speak to Neil.
They are using it in their nursery and selling the sprinklers ready to go with a PVC stand and riser set up. This set up is made locally to fit the sprinklers and can be ordered to be at whatever height you want. If you’re interested in an easy, simple, maintenance free and water efficient sprinkler for your larger garden, yard or small farm, the floppy sprinkler system may just be right for you.

Splash out with a spa Spa design, technology and efficiency has come a long way in recent years. No longer the hard to maintain power guzzlers of yesteryear, spas are now much more energy efficient, easy to manage and streamlined in design to offer a beautiful body of water that can enhance the look and lifestyle options of any home. Andrina (Andy) Tribbeck, from award-winning family-run business Poolwerx Nambour, says she has seen the popularity of spas steadily increase over the past few years. She credits this renewed interest to a number of factors, including the appeal to customers looking to downsize yet still wanting to enjoy the benefits of an easy to manage body of water, a cost-effective all-round swimming season and the therapeutic benefits of hydrotherapy jets. With the countdown to Christmas now on, a spa can certainly add that extra sparkle and ‘wow factor’ to entertaining. Customers who buy now can get a deluxe spa for the standard price, saving
up $2000, plus they can also receive a free Wi-Fi Smartlink control system valued at $1500. Andy says they have a spa to suit every backyard from the compact but feature-packed Mt Cascade at 2x2m up to the family sized Mt Forbes swim spa at 4.5x2.3m. “Installation is super simple. Depending on the model, you just need a concrete slab and either a 15amp or a 32amp power supply. Once we deliver, you just add water, turn it on and it's ready to go,” she says. Spas are also portable and hold their value. Selling Australian-made spa products also means that parts are readily available, often arriving the next day after order. Inbuilt water technology systems also mean far less chemicals are used compared to traditional spas. For an even more luxurious spa experience, minerals can be added for the ultimate in relaxation and enjoyment. “We see more customers looking at luxury hydrotherapy spas. We sell Deluxe Banff Spas,
which come with UV sterilisation and ozone water clarification systems, LED lighting and include a waterfall, stainless steel hydrotherapy massage jets, timber free frame and a lockable hard cover,” Andy says. To find out more drop into Poolwerx, or visit www.banffspas.com.au.

The word hibiscus evokes thoughts of the large bright flowers of tropical isles, but there are more than 1000 hibiscus species worldwide, including 35 species that are native to Australia. Three species have been found in Glass House Mountains National Park, and these are equally as showy and spectacular as the tropical species, though quite different in form. The most common local hibiscus is the native rosella, Hibiscus heterophyllus, which grows as a rounded shrub on the fringes of rainforest and tall forest. There is much variation in the flowers of this species, with local shrubs having white and pink flowers (pictured). Other local species are H divaricatus and H splendens (splendid hibiscus). In the garden, native hibiscus shrubs can be used for hedging or as a screen, as a feature, in a mixed planting or even as a container plant. They are wonderful bird and insect attractors, as their flowers produce copious amounts of nectar, and the seed capsules provide a feast for seed-eaters, such as rainbow lorikeets. The prolonged flowering from spring to summer make these an important part of the natural ecosystem, encouraging natural pest control as the insects use the plant as a food source and are themselves controlled by a wide range of predators. Many hibiscus species are known bush foods, with edible flowers, leaves and even roots. The petals make an attractive garnish for salads and can be preserved as a chutney or jam, made into a syrup, or used to make teas.

Need more living space?
Based in Mooloolah Valley, Dani Farmer from D. Farmer Carpentry and Construction has the trade knowledge and expertise to help you extend your home living space. The fully licensed carpenter and trade professional has been involved in construction work for more than a decade, and in the past 13 years has successfully completed many shed conversions and granny flats. Dani explains that shed conversions are a perfect solution for those wanting to expand their living space using existing structures. Relatively easy to construct, he says conversions are a great way to capitalise on existing floor space, add value to your property and for those wanting to provide additional living, bathroom or kitchen areas – an easy solution to comfortably accommodate more family and visitors. For structural work requiring council approval, Dani is happy to facilitate all the required processes and professional sign offs. He can even get a draftsman to come in to draw up plans and arrange an engineer to ensure the approval and permit process is as straight forward as possible. Dani said some conversions don’t require council approval – it all depends on individual factors. “We know the processes involved and are happy to help make it easy for our client,” he said. Dani and his team pride themselves on providing quality renovations and have a great team of allied professionals to assist with additional work such as plumbing or electrical if required for larger jobs. The construction or renovation of decks is also a popular service he provides. To find out more or for a free quote, call Dani on 0429 162 817 or visit his Facebook page.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in December The long spells of dry weather can make your soils water repellent. Use soil wetting granules to make the most of any storm rainfall. The wet humid weather is heaven for vegetable caterpillars and grasshoppers. They can strip leafy green veges overnight. Hand remove or spray with a natural spray (such as Dipel) every couple of days. Remember that water washes off any sprays, so repeat after rain or overhead irrigation. Tunnelling ants are active and can cause headaches in pot plants. Drown them by watering with soapy water, maybe with a few drops of a garden insecticide. Paw paw trees that have grown too tall cut be cut back now. Cut the stem to 1m off the ground and cover the cut top with a large can.
Prune back your grevilleas by a third and feed with a low phosphorus fertiliser. This simulates being burnt back in a bushfire and stimulates them to grow more branches – more branches means more flowers. Don’t forget to slip-slop-slap when you go out in the garden, even if it is for a short period. Try to do most of the work in the mornings or the afternoons, so that you miss the heat of the day. Take a water bottle with you too. Keeping well hydrated is just as important. Tidy up the garden for Santa – he doesn’t think too highly of a messy garden.
What’s on for gardeners in December • Elimbah-Caboolture Herb Club – December 7, 10am meeting at the Caboolture PCYC in Toovey Street, Caboolture. Contact Robyn on 0427 138 168.
Vegetables Plant tomato, capsicum, snake bean, okra, eggplant, sweet corn, lettuce (leafy varieties), radish, sweet potato, cucumber, zucchini, choko, pumpkin, rockmelon, watermelon and rosella.
Flowers Plant cosmos, marigold, salvia, zinnia, begonia, celosia, gomphrena, sunflower, torenia, ageratum, aster, impatiens and coleus.
If you haven’t done it yet, prune your azaleas to keep them nice and compact, and give them a feed with azalea fertiliser. Spray them with Confidor or Multiguard to protect the leaves from the dreaded azalea lacebug.
• Native Plants Sunshine Coast – December 8 talks on creating habitat for native animals at Mary Cairncross theatrette. By invitation only. From the churches The Christmas of all history Most people reckon that the Christmas celebration was something that evolved from early church practices and developed in the medieval ages. You can look up Wikipedia and find all sorts of history as to how and when Christmas developed in western culture. However, most all of that information is ‘postevent’. In other words, Christmas is defined and practised from a starting point celebrated on December 25 and pointing to the birth of Christ, which at a best guess is estimated somewhere around 3-4 BC. It’s interesting that if you look closely in the Bible at other passages, you will find that the prophecies and expectation of the Advent of the Christ or Messiah were significant in Jewish history. Indeed, you might even describe it as the “pinnacle of human history”. Hebrews 16:6 says: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” This is to say that God’s bringing about a historic plan of redemption always had Christmas in mind. Plans were laid long ago in ancient Israel. The coming

With work for the dole participants getting a couple of weeks off over Christmas and New Year, Parrots in Paradise will be short of helpers during the holiday period. of the Christ was a predicted and accomplished event in history, with present day implications for God’s people. It all looked forward to what Paul said in Galatians 4:4-5: “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.” That time was set at a precise moment in space, time and history when under Roman occupation, with a network of roads and ocean navigation, an official language and the “Peace of Rome”, that the coming of a baby to save the world from sin took place -perfectly. The thing people really don’t get about Christmas is the future of it. The advent of Christ signals the end of all history, the final judgement of all people and the deliverance of all creation from sin of cosmic proportions. The focal point of the Christian hope and the Christmas story is the advent of Christ in Glory - for Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever!

In Memoriam Bruce William Mitchell 12/04/72 – 29/11/15
On this special day we remember that you are no longer with us. Although we cannot see you, we know that you are here. We feel the warmth of your smile and can sense that you are near. We want you to know that your memory is always carried in our hearts and you are always by our side. Not a day goes by that we don’t think of you or miss you. Today we remember all the great memories we have with you. Until we meet again. Love from the Mitchell family and all your friends.
Marion Ellen Hingst
30/12/1929 – 26/11/2016 God sent his angel, As I held your hands and pleaded with you to stay But on her golden wings you were taken And in my heart you will forever stay In God’s light you will find joy Till we meet again someday. Always in my thoughts, forever in my memories. Your friend for always, Sadly missed, Ellen.

One cold victory Beerburrum strongman Tim O’Shea travelled to the coldest major city on Earth - Yakutsk in Siberia - to compete in the mas-wrestling world championships on November 25. With minus 35 degrees temperatures outside, Tim, aged 40, became the first Australian heavyweight to win a bout in the world championships, beating the Serbian Ratkov in the second round.
Unfortunately at 138kg Tim was the smallest in the heavyweight division and in a triumph of physics was beaten by the 230kg Serbian Zelen and the giant Brazilian Riccardo. Mas-wrestling is a traditional strength-combat sport of the Sakha people of Russia, which is fast growing across the globe with 39 countries represented at the world championships.
Contributed by Brenda Briese Saturday, November 17: Mixed aggregate four ball stableford with 20 pairs. Winners were Trevor and Mavis Brimelow with a fine 75 points, followed by Allan Warry and Lesley Eggleston on 72 points on a countback. NTPs: 2 - Andrea Campbell, 5 - Mavis Brimelow, 16 - Peter Hewlett, 18 - Betty Howe. Birdie box - Hope Hannah and Phil Siegle. BRD went to 72 points. Thursday, November 22: A stableford in two divisions with only 44 ladies as some cancelled due to a forecast of rain, but it was a nice, albeit windy day. Division one winner was Lea Doyle on 39 points and runner up Teresa Keast on 38 points. Division two winner was Leith Barnes on 36 points on a countback followed by Janelle Balfe also on 36 points. NTPs: 2 - Monica Dangerfield, 5 and 16 - Lea Doyle, and 18 - (second shot) Barbara Whitfield. Scores overall were good with the ball run down only going to 35 points.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Contributed by Ken Barker On Tuesday, November 13 we had 15 carers from Range Care and on Friday, November 16 ten Caloundra visitors and both groups had a great time. In social play on Thursday, November 15, in an alliterative battle, Kath Smith and Bev Sockhill defeated Helen Andrews and Sally Adams 12-3, while at the same time Donna Manning edged out Vince Carbery 16-10. On Sunday, November 18 we went as a team to play in the annual doubles competition against the Nambour club. The trophy was donated by previous members Lew and Barb Fitchen, and is an indication of the goodwill between our two clubs. We are proud that we played with a good spirit but without luck winning only one game out of the eight played. All players on both sides are to be commended for participating in what is a laudable event. Well done. Congratulations to Nambour as hosts and as the winning team. The Fitchen trophy will return to Nambour for one
more year. Better luck next year Maleny! Contrary to appearances, the attached photograph does not record a situation that required a call for a paramedic. It is actually a standard part of the game of association croquet. Ted Singleton, on his way to winning the division one championship in our November tournament, is lining up a ‘peel’ of the yellow ball through rover – the red hoop. He must do this and then make the hoop with the red ball, after which he will take the yellow and red balls to the peg, seen in the far left, and peg both out, ending the game. Failure to do so allows the player of the black and blue balls to have another turn and possibly turn the tables. For the record, Ted correctly won the game on that turn. Lessons for beginners are held on Saturdays at 8am on the courts in the showgrounds. Play days on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the showground are at 2.10pm for a 2.30pm start on Thursdays and Sundays. For details contact president Vince Carbery 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs When the honeymoon is over
One evening, after the honeymoon, Tom was working on his Harley motorcycle in the garage. His new wife was standing by the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally said: "Honey, I've just been thinking, now that we’re married, maybe it's time you quit spending so much of your time out here in your garage. “You probably should consider selling your Harley and all that welding equipment; they take up so much of your time. And that gun collection and fishing gear, they just take up so much space. And you know the boat is such an
Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 There should be an urge this week to advance yourself by pushing through boundaries. However, we don’t mean marathons, or breaking the law, or being aggressive on the roads. What it does mean is exciting and interesting stimulations rock your world and lead you into a different, and revitalising attraction now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Hopefully this week may see you as the recipient of a windfall in one form or another. Avoid getting tied up in red tape by people in government positions enamoured with their perceived power. Keep expectations low and rearrange meetings to stay ahead of the game. Always keep the big picture in mind, not the molehills. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Let’s see you this week with optimism and happy travels with loving reunions. A key partner has your attention. A strange planetary energy, under Mercury, sees you trying to break the law. But this is not the week to do so. In seeking cooperation, you may instead find someone critical. Don’t provoke, just bite your tongue. CANCER June 24 - July 22 The planets indicate that someone from the home front needs to compromise. There is a difference between being determined and just outright stubbornness. Battle lines could be drawn over money methods. Definitely get two opinions regarding a job or a heath matter as faulty judgment makes a bad decision.

ongoing expense and you hardly use it. I also think you should lose all those stupid model aeroplanes and your home brewing equipment. And what’s the use of that vintage hot rod sports car?" Tom had a horrified look on his face. She noticed and said: "Darling, what's wrong?" He replied: "Just for a minute there, you were starting to sound like my ex-wife." "Ex-wife?" she shouted. "You never told me you were married before!" “I wasn't," Tom replied. Contributed by Noel Meyers

LEO July 23 – August 22 With Jupiter proceeding through Sagittarius this works well with your Leo Fire sign and a grand, positive turn begins to unfold in your life. The Christmas ideology of joy and glad tidings can make you a proud parent. Avoid skirting the law when driving. Pleasures are coming in all shapes and sizes now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Curb any tendencies to be sensitive or suspicious about your social standing. Listen to your friends that do not play into anyone’s insecurities. Confidential matters are emphasised and you can handle a confidence with discretion. A little bit of hard work that you put into one of your creative visions pays off handsomely. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Good tidings, travel, and upbeat connections make this a grand week. Love and laughter are there for you in beautiful bold colours. Lunches see lots of kisses. Early morning sees daily routines and attention to everyday duties. You are ready now to experience life from a new more exciting dimension. Unusual encounter! SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Modest gains that provide the most satisfaction. Sometimes towards the end of the year there looms big promises but they are likely to fade away. It is better to keep being optimistic and working to a pace that suits you, so that good luck comes with responsibilities handled well. Pay attention to handling details.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With the benefit of your ruling planet, Jupiter, you will prefer applying spiritual and intellectual insight. That means follow up and care for your feelings so that your actions can set up productive days. It’s time for a visit to somebody’s home or make plans for a family holiday affair built on solid foundations and respected traditions. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Push on steadily this week towards your objectives. Self doubts can lead you to argue with yourself so you need cooperation with chatting with others, especially a partner or close associate. There may be whispers about taking out a loan but your plans are not quite ready to be revealed. In your personal life there are sudden arrivals. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Make sure that this week is a good one to put material matters away and focus on family feelings. Accept financial help from others and don’t be too proud not to take it. You will find that you can give back in other ways. There will be lucky opportunities coming to you but don’t rush around as it may cause accidents to your bones. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Recognition and praise can be forthcoming as well as a chance for advancement. There are some residual pressures to face from last week and you may feel like having some help to deal with them rather than being alone. Maximise your security by not being impulsive. If another is not in a good mood pick someone else for having fun.
