ou may have noticed that we have now included a countdown to Christmas on the front cover. We just like to provide a subtle reminder that time is ticking and you need to start warming up to the Season of Good Will and start getting organised! In our office once Melbourne Cup is done and dusted – we go into a Christmas Frenzy which includes full scale decorations, Christmas lights and again this year the lovely Lottie (our favourite local knitter) has been hard at work preparing for our yarn bombed Christmas Tree – which is sure to impress! As usual as Christmas gets closer we will no doubt have more and more Christmas themed stories, so if you have any stories, events, party photos, pets or children in Christmas themed outfits etc make sure you send them through to us to include in our pages. Send to editorial@gcnews.com.au I look forward to reading your Christmas contributions and sharing them with our community! Regards,

If you had the ‘eagle eye’ skills of a bird of prey you might have spotted the Bondi Vet, Dr Chris Brown a long way from home recently when he was in our neck of the woods with the team from Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue Service at Landsborough. This is not the first time that Dr Chris has visited the centre, and the Twinnies really appreciate his interest and support in their work. This visit came about when Bridget and Paula contacted the production team that create his show and asked if Dr Chris would be interested in providing them with some assistance with a bird called Beaky. Within a few weeks, Dr Chris and his team were at Landsborough checking out Beaky. We can’t spoil the story so you will have to wait for it to go to air – when the date of the show is confirmed, the Twinnies will let us know. The girl's mum Helen Powers said that Dr Chris admires the work that the girls do and their dedication to the birds that come into their care. As the awareness of their service grows so too does the demand for their services and they are constantly on the lookout for locals who would like to get involved on a long-term basis and become part of their volunteer team.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the Sunshine Coast Technology Expo at Beerwah provided an important opportunity to view, try out and ask questions about emerging technology. “There is literally something for everyone and the event has a strong focus on fun and learning for all ages. People can experience 3D printing, Ozobots, animation, retro gaming, green screen photography and much more,” Cr Baberowski said. Presenters include State Library of Queensland, University of the Sunshine Coast, U3A Grafx Group, local businesses, schools and artists. There will also be a barbecue, live music and a chance to win a Tech Hamper, sponsored by the Friends of Beerwah Library. University of the Sunshine Coast Lecturers and Engage Lab Researchers, Ben Rolfe and Uwe Terton will guide people into the fully booked Design and Print your own 3D object workshop with participants taking their simple 3D object home once printed. Ben also brings the Armchair Rollercoaster Ride to visitors using 3D Oculus Rift Glasses. “The University is focussed on profiling the work that students and faculty undertake at the Engage Lab,” Ben said. “With programming, gaming and design all featuring in our participation on the day, we are excited to offer this opportunity to residents in the public library space.”

Dana ‘Deadly’ Coolwell Recently Beerwah based boxer Dana ‘Deadly’ Coolwell received the Cathy Freeman Junior Award at the Indigenous Sports Awards held at City Hall in Brisbane. A journalist with the Koori Mail nominated Dana for the award after becoming aware of his impressive achievements including his gold medal in the 46kg class at the Australian Junior Championships which earned him a place at the World Championship in Russia. Dana was one of only six juniors that were selected from the National titles to travel to World Championships which is a great achievement given Dana has only been boxing since 2013. Unfortunately he didn't come away with the win from the World Championship, however he was pretty philosophical about the outcome. His Facebook comments at the time showed his maturity in handling any disappointment saying that it was an awesome experience to represent his country in the sport he loves! “All I can do now is support my team mates, enjoy the experience and learn from it and when I get home map out what's next!” Dana said. And judging by my recent interview with Dana and his coach and mentor Steve Pitt they seem to have the next 10 years of his life mapped out, which will obviously include Commonwealth and Olympic Games. And according to Steve, there won’t be any time for girlfriends, which I didn’t notice Dana making any comments about. Dana is very down to earth about his achievements. Not anticipating that he’d win

Coach Steve Pitt with Dana at the awards the sports award, he hadn’t prepared a speech, so declined the offer of making a comment on receiving the award. However he did tell me that if he had the chance again, he would definitely thank his coach Steve Pitt for his support and encouragement and of course he would thank his mum and everyone else who has supported him along the way. Also on the night, one of Dana’s role models, Johnathon Thurston, won his second Eddie Gilbert Medal. Unfortunately because of his Cowboys' commitments, he wasn’t present at the ceremony, but there was a live video cross to him for his acceptance. Back in 2013 when Dana started boxing he only got involved to improve his fitness for playing Rugby League, just doing a couple of sessions a week. Gradually that has changed and he can now train up to 11 sessions a week and he doesn’t have time to play footie. I asked Dana how has his dedication to boxing impacted on his school work? “Yeah, I am doing much better at school as I have more discipline in getting everything done,” he said. No doubt there will be plenty more stories written about and speeches made by Dana into the future – Go Dana you are doing our community proud.

Libraries looking for presenters If you have valuable knowledge on a topic that you would like to share with the community, Sunshine Coast Libraries would like to hear from you. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said there is no doubt libraries play an important role in our community. “Our Sunshine Coast Library network includes eight vibrant and busy library branches and two mobile libraries,” Cr McKay said. “And with more than 1.5 million people visiting Sunshine Coast Libraries every year, of which 32,000 attended the diverse range of free events and activities in 2015, there is no doubt that our community loves this service. “But we cannot do it without the 400 local businesses and community members who help to make this happen. “Our library surveys tell us the community are passionate about these free sessions so we are keen to hear from presenters who would like to share their knowledge on a range of topics in 2016. “It could be anything from sustainable living to health and wellbeing - as long as it educates, informs and supports lifelong learning for our community.” To register your interest please contact Sunshine Coast Libraries on 5475 8989 or email libraries@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Hoping to raise awareness and shake some of the stigma that can be associated with depression and anxiety, Paul ‘Richo’ Richardson and Col Finley have produced an album bursting with the music of local artists entitled ‘Above the Blue’. The album is set to be launched in Maleny on November 14 with all proceeds going towards Beyond Blue. Around nine months ago, good mates Paul and Col were catching up and having a coffee when the conversation turned towards anxiety and depression – conditions that most people either know of someone who has been affected or have experienced it themselves. In the firm held belief that music can make a difference, Paul and Col set about to get in touch with their musician mates with the idea of a locally produced album that would help raise awareness of these conditions as well as support the critical work of support organisations like Beyond Blue. “We wanted to use music as the bridge to help direct people to professional services like Beyond Blue. We’ve all had a run in or known someone who has had a run in with ‘the black dog’ and it’s important to raise the awareness of these conditions, start the conversations and be able to talk to your mates,” explained Paul. “Even though I’m a big boofy bloke, as a muso it’s probably easier for me to talk about sensitive issues. I also understand the healing power of music and how it can make a difference by reaching out. Music connects us all and transcends all barriers – it is a most powerful healing tool.” Every artist approached didn’t hesitate to donate their time and music, and the album consists of 14 locally established and emerging artists who have all donated a song each to this worthy

cause. The album has a country, alt. country and roots vibe and features a selection of heartfelt and inspiring songs that seek to connect with the listener, from high calibre artists such as Luke O’Shea, Jen Mize and Kevin Borich. The cost of producing the album was generously covered by The Apex Club of Maleny who completely threw their support behind this community based project. “Apex Maleny have been great, they are the best bunch of people who fully support their local community,” said Paul. The album launch will be at the Maleny Showgrounds Pavilion on Saturday, November 14 with doors opening at 6.00pm. Tickets for this special fundraising event will be $60.00 which includes a two course meal, band and performances from ‘Above the Blue’, with all proceeds going to Beyond Blue. This will be an over 18 event and there will be a cash bar available. “Come along to the fundraising night and help support us to support you!” said Paul Tickets for the event are available from Maleny Newsagents, 29 Maple Street or by contacting Paul directly on 0412 698 595. For more details see their website www.abovetheblue.org or like their Facebook page.

Anniversary celebrations in the air Something must be the air as there are some major wedding milestones being celebrated in our local area this month. Ray and Con Mansell of Beerwah met during naval duties in England, and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on October 20. Ray was an Australian who took to the seas at 16 to seek his fame and fortune. He was based in England and when the war broke out he joined the Royal Navy where he first met Con. Ray and Con were both 18 when they married and the wedding was attended by Con’s parents, aunt and uncle and close friend Frankie. The couple had five children in England before immigrating to Australia in 1960 on the ‘Fairsea’. Their last child was born in Australia. Originally Ray and Con settled in Petrie in North Brisbane with Con’s parents living next door. Upon retirement 29 years ago, Ray and Con built their house in Pinelands Drive Beerwah where they have lived ever since. Their anniversary celebrations were held at a family dinner recently with all the (grown up) children, extended family and long term friends helping them celebrate.

www.gcnews.com.au

In another great example of a long and happy marriage, Glass House Mountains couple, Ian and Dot McLaren are about to celebrate their Diamond Anniversary on October 29. The couple, who are now 83 and 79, were married in Dundee in Scotland on October 29, 1955 and immigrated to Australia in 1958 with one daughter. Since then the ‘clan McLaren’ in Australia has grown to 15 members including five grandchildren and one great grandchild. The family will celebrate the occasion at Ocean View Winery at Mount Mee. This is the same venue where they had previously renewed their vows at their 50th wedding anniversary celebration, 10 years ago. Even after 60 years, both Ian and Dot are still in regular contact with their bridesmaid and best man (Ian’s brother) from their wedding. For their 50th wedding anniversary, Dot’s bridesmaid was able to fly over to help them celebrate. The couple moved to Glass House Mountains 22 years ago and feel that the surrounding mountains remind them a little of the mountains in Scotland. Ian and Dot have led by example and all three of their daughters have each been married for over 30 years. When asked about what makes a successful marriage and life together, Ian and Dot suggest always be truthful and start and end each day with a hug. And one final piece of advice from the couple; “never go to sleep angry and live life in moderation.”

Contributed by Gordon McCormack Fellowship and active outings are a major part to our Club’s success and recent months have been good ones. A recent trip saw us on a City Cat for a couple of hours on the Brisbane River and finished up with a rowdy lunch in Good Olde England style at a South Bank noshery. Last month we took a bus and 30 folk had an informative visit to the old Boggo Road jail, followed up with lunch. Those who grew up in Brisbane have childhood memories of the imposing stone walls and worse, the lurid stories told of those ‘nasties’ being held there. Next week we’re being treated to ‘High Tea’, this time at our President’s home, and we’re expecting 50 or so of the Club will be on their best behaviour in the ‘refined’ requirement for such an event. Several of our ladies have been trawling through the old recipe books for those long remembered

The Glasshouse Mountains Probus Group at the old Boggo Road Jail tasty morsels with the blokes ‘tasting’ and passing judgement where they’re allowed. We’ve recently welcomed four new members and that’s pleasing. Our interesting guest speakers have helped to spread our minds. The Library CEO gave us a run down on the value of our Library as a social hub for the Community, if your Club hasn’t had that pleasure, it is really informative. That’s how we are. If this has been of any interest to you we’d be more than happy to explain Probus. Call Gordon on 5439 0446.

Summer’s coming......and so is Carmen! Like many Australian country towns, Maleny has many community groups offering residents the chance to play sport or games, create something beautiful, or to help someone in need. If you haven’t found a group of like-minded people out there, you really haven’t been trying. The Maleny Singers was formed in 2003, offering the chance to sing Christmas carols for the local community. Over the years, the group has progressed to fully-staged operettas with orchestra, while continuing the Christmas carols at the RSL, as well as singing at the Australia Day celebrations at the Showground and the ANZAC Day service. When performances were financially successful, the Singers donated some of that profit to other local community groups, such as the Hospital Auxiliary and the Neighbourhood Centre, along with many other deserving organisations. Last year, the Maleny and District Rural Fire Brigade was the beneficiary for the ‘Merrie England’ concerts at the RSL. Fittingly, the concerts were held on one of the hottest weekends last summer. Luckily, the firies, who were helping at the concert, were not called out! This year, the firies will be there again – helping to set up the Maleny Community Centre, selling raffle tickets and providing afternoon teas for the audience. Most appropriately, this concert is set in hot and sultry Spain, where gypsies roam wild and free! ‘Highlights from Carmen’ serves up

Beerwah Celebrated

The Celebrate Beerwah committee thanks our beautiful community for showing their support for our Celebrate Beerwah Street Party by turning up in the thousands. It was a great evening out. Our committee is only small, but it packs a punch. Thanks Debbie, Beckie, Roger, Maree, Ilia, Ana, and Mike. We put in a huge day's work on Friday for the party, but that is nothing compared to the preparation in the months leading up to the day. These people are warm, generous, fun, stubborn, and are all perfectionists. Thank goodness they stepped up to take on this challenge. Our thanks to the sponsors who trusted us to use their money for the community. Cr Rick Baberowski and council staff were in constant contact with us, smoothing the way and cheering us on. We had 63 volunteers helping throughout party day, and we thank them all for contributing to the party's success. They came from all areas of Glasshouse Country. Some belonged to groups like the Beerwah Menshed, Rural Fire Brigade, SES, Glasshouse Baptist Church and CWA. Students from Beerwah High School and Glasshouse Christian College threw themselves into the work, as did some other members of the community, like Dan, Greg, Hanna and Sylvie. Thank you. Using local contractors saved the day. Thanks to Geoff Keast, electrician, for staying on all day and night to make sure all was safe and working, and Michael Whitticker and team who ensured

Raine & Horne Beerwah

our stage sound and lighting was spot on. Local businesses, artisans and community groups created the vibrant market atmosphere. Jenny Broderick brought a wide range of volunteer performers together to bring Simpson Street to life. Jenny also oversaw the setting up of the community stage, and thanks to the crew from the Baptist Church for working with other volunteers packing away the stage which was loaned by Beerwah State Primary School. Thanks for your work, Jenny. We thank the performers for sharing their time and talent with us all. We began with nothing but the desire to build on the success of the Sunshine Coast Council's street party last year. Now we have a fully incorporated organisation, ready to take on more challenges. We plan to hold more events, and support other groups in the region. We have been able to sponsor Glasshouse Muso's for a grant application, and hope to help other groups along the way. Your feedback and questions are welcome. Email us any time. Use our Facebook page. My apologies if I have left anyone out. My head is still spinning! You know we value everyone who has helped us along the way. Thank you Glasshouse Country for showing what a vibrant community we are. Funding success for Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club Contributed by Jill Forster Use of a pitch cover is critical in protecting our turf wicket ensuring that we can provide a high quality playing surface and preventing games from being cancelled due to wet weather. The pitch cover we used for our Field 2 turf wicket was starting to deteriorate and the club needed to purchase a new one. The synthetic covering (Gabba grass) on our cement wicket on our Field 3 was washed off when flooding occured in February this year.

Meaning that the wicket could not be used until it was restored. The synthetic wicket is an extremely important part of our facility. It is used by our Junior cricketers for both training and games, and has been used by the students of Beerwah State High School for their inter-school cricket since the school opened in 1992. It is used by Sunshine Coast Cricket Association for Representative Junior Trials, training and zone games and as a back-up wicket for our senior players.

If the synthetic wicket could not be repaired prior to the commencement of our next season, in October this year, all these people would not be able to access our facility. It would have had a huge impact on the playing of cricket and the club's ability to supply grounds for the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association competition. This would prevent our players from playing locally. Fourtunatley In March this year Sunshine Coast Council provided funding through their Major Grants Community Facilities Program. Aware of the importance to have both of these projects undertaken Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club submitted an application for funding through the program to purchase a new pitch cover and to replace the synthetic covering on our cement wicket. In May the club was advised that the funding for $5,439.00 for these projects had been successful. The club has recently replaced the synthetic covering on the cement wicket and purchased the new pitch cover just in time for the commencement of our new season on October 3. Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club is extremely appreciative of the support from Sunshine Coast Council for funding these projects.

Young Veterans Rally Contributed by Karen and Nick Forster-Jones Diggers Rest They passed through Beerwah on October 21 and stayed at Diggers Rest - ‘A Soldiers Retreat’ en route to Fraser Island, the next stop over, on their epic journey from Victoria to Cape York Peninsula. Their drive is raising awareness for the increasing number of younger generation veterans in our local communities and changing the perception of what the public consider a Veteran to be, through educational talks at local RSL’s and schools. A wonderful evening was had by all around a bonfire and then throwing their swags down under the stars. After a hearty breakfast, Young Veterans Founder Chris May, along with Katie and Shane, presented Quilts of Valour to Veterans Dianne Cuttler, Nigel Brien and Nick Forster-Jones thanking them for their service and sacrifice serving our Country. Follow their journey on https://www.facebook. com/YoungVeteransRSL.

We would like to thank Maleny RSL, Bunnings Caloundra, Masters North Lakes, Landsborough IGA, Beerwah IGA, Woolworths Beerwah, Thor Technologies, Beerwah Hotel, Blackwater Trading Co. Moffat Beach, De Beers Meat Company and Springbok Foods for their generosity and contributions which without this evening would not have been possible.

Introducing Jayden Marle, your IGA Beerwah Produce Assistant Jayden has been with IGA Beerwah for 10 years, and has lived locally for 15 years. Starting his career with the store in the produce department, Jayden has also worked in the store deli and on registers before moving back to work in fresh produce. Jayden enjoys working with fresh fruit and vegetables in what he terms the “visually brightest department of the store”, and takes a lot of pride in ensuring that the displays always look fantastic. “It’s great to put a lot of effort into a display and then to step back and see that it looks really good.” He often uses the dynamics of colour and sizing to create a visually appealing experience for customers and loves the fact that working in fresh produce can feel like you are working on a farm because of the variety and freshness of the produce. Jayden always enjoys interacting with customers and finds that they are often very complimentary about the standard of the displays, quality of product and prices. “We have a great team here, and everyone is bright, cheerful and happy. We are all pumped to be at work and it’s just really nice to be around positive people all day.”

The University of the Sunshine Coast will host a screening of an awardwinning documentary on the coal seam gas industry on Friday, October 30. Frackman is a feature-length film following anti-fracking activist Dayne Pratzky and his response to the expansion of the gas industry around the Darling Downs. The film night will include a free organic buffet and a question and answer session with representatives from the Lock the Gate protest group. USC Academic Fellow Phyllis Araneo, who teaches the course Environment, Technology and Sustainability, said Frackman took on some timely issues for Queensland’s environment. “We host the USC movie nights to help staff, students and the public learn about sustainability issues taking place in our own backyard,” she said. “This documentary looks at a really important topic for our environment and we would love to see a really diverse audience attending this screening. “It doesn’t matter what field people work or study in – business, education, law, health – we all need to understand our connection to the natural world.” The event is free to attend and will run from 6.00pm - 9.00pm at USC’s Lecture Theatre 7. Free parking is available on campus after 6.00pm. Attendees can register for the event at facebook.com/ events/1047184638655609/.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Where have all the Kookaburras gone?

with Sue Tanner I live in Conondale, down toward the Mary River and all the time we have been there we have been woken by kookaburras at the very glimpse of first light. However, in about the last six weeks we haven’t heard a single one! Where have they gone? Has anyone seen our kookaburras? (I think they may all be at Mt Mee where one swooped in and stole a sausage from a pair of tongs I was holding last weekend). I never thought I’d say this after being woken regularly at an ungodly hour, but I miss them. On Saturday, October 17 we held our AGM and I thank everyone for their vote of confidence in Kerri (treasurer) and me by re-electing us (for our sins?). I thank Kaye Gardiner, our outgoing secretary, for all her work in the past year, we will miss her. Welcome to Cliff Harrison as vice president and Gretchen Evans as secretary. We have some big plans for the coming year – watch this space! It was exciting to be at the rainforest recently to hear MP Mal Brough and Councillor Jenny McKay announcing $1 million has been granted for our development from the Commonwealth Tourism Infrastructure Fund. The Friends are very hopeful of sponsoring a section of the new discovery centre featuring the rainforest at night. The designer Kelly from Focus Concepts explained the progress and it’s whizz bang technology at our meeting and it sounds totally brilliant. Have you ever thought of volunteering at Mary Cairncross? Have you ever thought of being a guide? NOW is the time, phone the information desk for more details 5429 6122. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Kindy kids support our farmers The children of Beerwah Kindy recently collected a gold coin donation as part of their ‘dress like a pirate day’. The group looked to their local community when deciding where to donate the money raised. After seeing an article in GC&M News, we invited local resident Lee to collect the money on behalf of ‘Drought Run’. Lee thanked the children and explained how the money will be put to good use supporting our farmers doing it tough in remote Queensland.

School News New seats for school

Councillor Rick Baberowski recently donated $250.00 to Landsborough State School's P&C Association as part of his personal commitment to community development. This donation enabled the school to purchase two bench seats which have been placed outside the Prep classrooms. P&C President, Jo Brooks, said they had been approached by a few families, highlighting the need for extra seating outside their Prep classrooms. “Parents, grandparents and carers needed a place to meet their children at pick-up time each day. This seating has solved that problem, giving them a comfortable place to wait within close proximity to the classrooms. “Many thanks to Cr Baberowski for his support and donation," she said. Councillor Baberowski visited the school last week to see the finished product and meet some of the school families. Each seat is complete with a plaque acknowledging his valuable contribution to the school.

Building secure attachment with your baby The Hinterland Family Support worker, in conjunction with the Child Health Nurse, will be facilitating a fun six week program for mothers with babies under six months old and expectant mothers. The group will meet together on a Thursday morning from 10.00am to 12.00noon at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre beginning on Thursday, November 5. Starting Strong is a free program that has been developed to support and nurture the transition from pregnancy to becoming a mother. The aim of the program is to create a supportive environment in which the importance of secure attachment between mother and baby can be explored, understood and fostered. Please register early to secure a place by either phoning Wendy on 0423 716 705 or email at wendy@calcomm.org.au to register.

Improving your child’s health

Children of all ages can benefit from acupuncture, even starting from birth, and there are no needles used at all. Kaz and her team know it is important to build a trusting relationship with their young clients, and over time they slowly start to introduce needles and cupping. Children respond very positively to these sessions, and a treatment only takes 15-30 minutes, and costs just $40.00. Some of the benefits can include relief for teething, digestion and colic symptoms for babies, plus improve cognitive function, regulate sleeping patterns and stabilise behavioural issues for all ages. Each child is assessed individually, and Kaz can work with you and your family to get the best possible ongoing outcome. “Children can pick up on other stresses and emotions around them, and we can really assist them with anxiety or trauma,” says Kaz. For more details on how acupuncture can assist you and your family’s health and general well-being, please phone or call in today. Follow us on facebook for our regular blogs, and you can also book an appointment online through our website.

Beerwah Street Party

Last Friday's Street Party in Simpson Street at Beerwah, was a credit to the region and the organising committee! What a turn out and what a great event it was, something for everyone on a beautiful balmy evening. Loads of entertainment smattered about, a mouthwatering variety of food, crafty stalls to browse and shop, and fun healthy activities for the kids to enjoy. Well done Beerwah and a huge pat on the back to all those involved in staging yet another brilliant event. The t-shirted volunteers were outstanding, right down to the team of table cleaners who moved up and down the street making sure all the table settings were cleaned and usable for the next patron. Great to see the street shine, the gardens further established and landscaped so dramatically. Beerwah was truly showcased as the up and coming town it’s proving to be. Congratulations, job well done. Andrea Balcombe Peachester

Glasshouse ‘Tyzac Excavations’ Rodeo a success

The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club Committee would like to extend a big thankyou to our local community for making the 2015 Tyzac Excavations Rodeo a big success. In combination with Honky Tonk Promotions and our Gold Sponsor, without the support, the night would not have been possible. Our list of sponsors include: Tyzac Vacuum Excavation Holcim, GC&M News, Braetop Strawberries, ATL Graphix, Barry’s Family Butchers, Turf Club at Caloundra, Fullerton Farms, Eales Concrete Constructions, Luke’s IGA Glasshouse, Feed & Fodder, Beerwah Tyres & Batteries, Beerwah Small Engines, Mountain Auto Electrics, Matilda Fruit Barn, Hinterland Accounting, Wild Horse Turf, Go Turf, Instyle Electrics, Sandy Creek Pineapples, Cam’s Truck & Bobcat Hire, Bush2Beach Cleaning Services, Mal Brough, Andrew Powell, Elimbah P & C, Dales Welding & Fabrications, Hatchling House Family Day Care, APEX of Maleny and Homestyle Bakery. Without these people this night wouldn’t have been a possibility. Lastly, we cannot thank enough all of our 40 volunteers that helped run the food stalls, canteen, parking and raffles. This was a fantastic community event allowing the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club to not only give back to the community, but the proceeds from the night will allow sporting opportunities to be available for the children within our community for years to come. Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club Committee

Thanks for a great show!

This year’s annual Spring Orchid Spectacular proved to be one of the best ever! The orchid displays were colourful and amazing and the local community turned out in great numbers to support the event. Glasshouse Country Orchid Society members would like to thank the local business which, in various ways, supported and sponsored the Show. Our thanks to Basset Barks, Beerwah Flowers and Gifts, Peachester Fruit & Veggies, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, Matilda Fruit Barn and Aranbeem Orchid Nursery. Your support is always deeply appreciated. The major raffle winners were: 1st prize - J Hopgood, Bribie Island, 2nd prize S. Wright and 3rd prize R. Palmer. The flower count competition was won by I Frizzo who, amazingly, was spot on with the total count of 247 flowers. Glasshouse Country Orchid Society

Don’t be blinded by the glamour

On the eve of the Melbourne Cup please take time to think beneath its glamorous facade. Horse racing is a ruthless commercial industry motivated by financial gain and prestige. The fashion, champagne and gambling may excite the crowd but it’s not fun for the horses who are running for their lives. Scratch the surface of the horse racing industry and it’s a sure bet you’ll find suffering, pain and abuse. I’m so passionate about horses and would just like to make you aware of some of its practices. The racing industry in Australia is responsible for the birth of approximately 18,000 foals per year, roughly only 30% end up racing. Most of the rejects will be slaughtered or abandoned. Racehorse owners want a return on their investment as soon as possible, young horses are forced to train and race before their bones and growth plates have matured, this causes injuries such as fractures. Horses can be whipped up to 40 times in a single race, whipping the horse over and over again inflicts physical and psychological pain. Horses are also kept in stables up to 22 hours a day, which can cause suffering from unnatural feed regime, horses control their stomach acid by continuously grazing which they are unable to do. Drug use is also a common practice either through illegal pharmaceuticals or misuse of legal ones. My biggest concern is that the majority of ex race horses lives are expendable, it’s a downward spiral that ends up in the slaughterhouse or knackery. Please go to www.horseracingkills.com as a picture shows a thousand words. Concerned, Beerwah

Maleny Credit Union finalist in Sunshine Coast Business Awards Maleny Chamber of Commerce liked our Financial Literacy Workbook as a resource for the Maleny State High School Year 10 Financial Numeracy class, so much they nominated us for a Sunshine Coast Business Award. The Financial Literacy Workbook is as a result of observing young people come through our doors wanting to consolidate personal debt such as credit cards, store cards and personal loans with some having more than one credit card. It was obvious that some of these young people were struggling financially at such young ages and had no basic understanding of finance. If they weren’t getting it right now what chance did they have in the future and we could not stand by and watch this unfold, we needed to be proactive and be part of a solution. Being member-owned we are a banking and financial services enterprise and also a social enterprise, that is, our purpose is to improve the lives of members through ethical, sustainable and community focused services. The workbook fits right into our ethos. We approached Maleny State High School about putting together a collaborative program to help students to be financially prepared. The school was really excited that we wanted to step up and help them educate their students in financial literacy, and it was decided that a financial workbook could be created as a teaching resource.

OCTOBER 28 2015

The credit union engaged Nev Dance, Head of Maths Department at the Maleny State High School to consult on the project to ensure structure and alignment with curriculum was being met. The end result was a workbook consisting of 22 units to be taught over 24 weeks every Wednesday to Year 10 students. The topics ranging from Earning, Spending, Saving and Budgeting Money as well as Borrowing right through to Superannuation and Tax and everything in between. It will be updated every year to be ready for the next class of Year 10 students and eventually we want to see this in other high schools. During the last 15 weeks I have been using the Maleny Credit Union Financial Literacy booklet to teach my Year 10 Numeracy Class. The contents are life related and extremely relevant to our students, covering topics that are not covered in their regular subjects. This booklet is so comprehensive it gives the students an insight into nearly all of the pressing financial issues facing Australians today. Mr Mills, Teacher I think this booklet is a great addition to our class. This is one of my favorite subjects, as we always learn things that are actually important. Our class always has discussions about the units and the booklet answers any questions that we feel are important to us. Riley Bartsch, Student Nicole Hilton Business Development Officer

Moonlight walking for a cause

Last week GC&M News brought you the story of Bryan and Joy Watson from Maleny Motor Trimmers and their 19-year-old daughter Megan who was diagnosed with MS in 2014. They were looking for support for their team ‘The Ranga Runners’ who were participating in MS Moonlight Walk, to be held last Friday night in Brisba ne. This fundraising event supports people living with MS and funding resear ch to find a cure. Following the event, Joy contacted us to let us know what a great night it was. "It was a beautiful night last Friday night for the MS Walka thon and the lights of Brisbane and the river were spectacular and the Story Bridge was lit up red for the night," she said. "I would just like to thank everyone who supported us and let everyone know that by Friday night we had raised $2,566.00 for MS. This put us in 46th place of the 191 teams entered." However donations can still be accepted and they would love to raise that figure even higher. To make a donation simply visit the website www.MoonlightWalk.com.au then click on donate, search for The Ranga Runners and then make a donation. Or if it’s easier for you, call into their workshop 1/14 Lawye r Street, Maleny, and drop off a donation; Joy has a donation tin on the counter.

Sad loss

If you look along the Maleny skyline from the main street to the north, you may spot the silhouette of a tall silky oak tree. When I moved here about 22 years ago there were dozens around town - down the main street, around the cattle yards and along the Obi. They are now all gone. They are a beautiful tree - the flowers which are just starting to open this week provide food for all the nectar eaters, especially the fruit bats and the lorikeets. Today the council tried to cut this one down- one of the last mature ones in the town area. I doubt if we can save it, but I am concerned about the bats who have been coming here to feed for decades, some of which are the rare Grey Headed Flying Fox. I wonder what we will leave for our grandchildren? A sterile denuded urban area with nothing left of the beautiful green subtropical environment so many came to live here for. I hope to get council to plant several replacement silky oak trees with a view to the future, as well as plant more local native flowering street trees to provide food for our precious nectar eaters. Resident, Cherry Street Maleny

Mortgage advisor wins state award

Personal mortgage advisor, Teresa Harrison has just been named the Queensland winner of the Smartline Loans Client Care award. This is a wonderful achievement for Teresa who received the highest average score from customer satisfaction feedback in the state. The client care award is organised nationally by the Smartline franchise and is completely customer driven. The award is based on surveyed feedback that clients complete on settlement of their loans and Teresa received an incredible average of 9.9% out of 10. “For me, this is the most prestigious award to receive as it is created directly from client feedback. It is pretty special to have won this award as it is completely merit based and it also lets me know that I am on the right track with the service I’m providing for my clients,” she said. Teresa works out of her offices based in Woodford and at Hinterland Accounting Services in Beerwah. She has a long term background in Finance which spans over 25 years in and around the local Beerwah area. During this time she has worked for a major local bank, building society and has worked with Smartline for the last eight years. As well as winning the client care award, Teresa was also a state finalist in the Marketing Champion award.

Death rates from women’s cancers drop significantly

Death rates for female breast cancer and gynaecological cancers have dropped significantly in Queensland in recent decades, new Cancer Council research shows. The latest data from CCQ’s Cancer Research Centre shows female breast cancer death rates have dropped by an average of more than 2% per year since 1993 – a total decrease of 34%. Death rates for gynaecological cancers decreased by 28% between 1982 and 2012, with the biggest drop for cervical cancer, with death rates 60% lower today than in the early 1980s. “The drop in death rates is linked to a range of factors including earlier detection, participation in

recommended screening and improved treatment,” Ms Clift said. “The drop in breast cancer mortality is likely linked to the widespread use of post-operative systemic adjuvant therapies – like chemotherapy and hormonal therapies. “We know participation in breast and cervical cancer screening is vital in detecting women’s cancers early and improving survival outcomes. “While death rates are decreasing, our research also shows the incidence rates of female breast cancer are continuing to steadily increase – by about 1% per year.

Library Book reviews by Amanda ‘The book of strange new things’ by Michael Faber is about a minister whose congregation is in another solar system. Determined not to be put off by this subject matter I launched into the book and before long was addicted by the compelling plot and sense of foreboding. It turned out to be a wonderful story about how the minister manages his marriage by distance and the friendships he forges with his new congregation. A book about love, friendship and forgiveness – I highly recommend this as a good read. ‘Left neglected’ by Lisa Genova is also a compelling read about a woman who answers the phone while driving, causing an accident and ending up with brain damage. She must then learn to live a new life and ultimately a more fulfilling one. I couldn’t put it down and it made me think about how addicted we are to our devices and to work and that maybe there is a better way… ‘The strange library’ by Haruki Marakami is a very weird but funny book about a guy who goes into a library reading room to do some research, only to find the librarian is a brain eating zombie who wants to steal his scholarship! Quirky but nice…beware your next visit to the Library! For more details please visit www.libraries. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, call 5475 8989 or ask one of our friendly library staff. www.gcnews.com.au

Welcome into the studio

Local artist, Michele Deveze is one of seven artists and Arts Connect Inc. members across the Hinterland who will open her studio on the weekend of October 31 / November 1 (the last weekend of the month). Michele presently has almost as much space as she wants (you can never have enough), and she can just about always find all her tools and the special sheets of paper and pieces of dead plants and animals that she needs for the next work. The Dirty Studio is located at 232 Candle Mountain Drive, Peachester and looks over Crohamhurst Creek to Mount Beerwah, Mount Coonowrin, Mount Ngungun, and Tibrogargan. She shares common space with all her workshop tools and one cat of no small importance. Of pride of place is the etching/litho press and beautiful silky-oak and pine ex-government drafting furniture. The Clean Studio - the drawing room - is upstairs in a closed-in verandah overlooking the Blackall

Range, and is shared with a few too many cats. Why not enjoy a weekend drive and see artists at work in their creative spaces? This is part of the Arts Connect Inc. New look ‘Open Studio Program’, where artist’s studios will continually be open on the last weekend of each month, with Michele's studio open on Saturday and Sunday morning until 12.00noon. All you need to do is click onto the Arts Connect Inc. web site to find out who is opening each month! www.artsconnectinc.com.au

Watercolour exhibition An exhibition of watercolours by Mirella is being held over three days, from Friday, October 30 to Sunday, November 1 from 9.00am to 4.00pm each day. With the coming of spring, watercolourist Mirella, says she has painted flowers. “With flowers I try to interpret how the sunshine is contained within the cup of a flower, lends transparency to a petal, or diminishes detail, but still retains its essence. I favour an impressionistic approach,” she said.

Mirella was born in Italy, majored in the History of Art and Literature in South Africa, became a potter in Australia and took up painting when she settled in Maleny 13 years ago. The Exhibition is being held at Maleny Garden, 34 Mountain View Road, Maleny. There will also be delicious meals, coffee and tea available at the venue. The event is a fundraiser for the Friends of Ebenezer.

All Things Connected Exhibition

Colour - faunia in Beerwah

Residents at Crystal Waters Eco Village, Sandra Ferguson, Susie Foster, Beth Allen and Leeela Finch, have come together to present an exhibition which focuses on the spiritual thread of interconnectedness. The exhibition is on at the Lift Art Gallery during November and December. The official opening will be on Sunday, November 8 at 11.00 am. All are welcome. Life is joyously full of contrasts and differing perspectives which we celebrate and Curious Notions appreciate as by Susie Foster we showcase an eclectic mix of styles, mediums and subject matter, highlighting the relationship that exists personally and globally and which for us reflect an inner and outer essence that unites all things. Lift Gallery is located at 926 Maleny - Montville Road, Maleny. Opening hours Wednesday Sunday. 10.00am – 4.00pm.

Vianta Arts in Simpson Street is celebrating spring with Jim Cox’s exhibition ‘Colour – Faunia’ from November 1 to November 29. Jim has been roaming around his forest neighbourhood, carrying with him his artist’s eye, bringing back images of the common and the ordinary in our lives, which he has represented as we’ve never seen them before. The opening of the exhibition will be on November 6 at 6.00pm. Light refreshments will be served at the opening, and an a la carte menu will be available from 7.00pm, after the opening – call Steve on 0412 312 399 for table bookings. She interspersed the music with chats about the many flutes she brought on stage and anecdotes from her life as a flautist. It is a tradition that the audience is invited to Drinks on the Deck after Arts Council shows and on this occasion Jane’s CDs were as much in demand as the nibbles and drinks. The audience came from as far afield as Townsville and Brisbane for the show.

with Jade King

10,000 ways that won’t work! I must confess … my most recent grand elaborate garden plan sadly did not turn out the successful endeavor I envisaged. My husband warned me, but I smothered my doubts deeper than the dreaded weed I was battling – NUTGRASS! I’m sure I’ll hear the murmurs of understanding from those that have tried and failed against nutgrass, along with many suggestions on ways to eradicate it from others, however, this is one battle I’m going to have to concede defeat on. In part it has been a humbling experience, thinking that if I just kept removing it and persevered, it would eventually be gone and I’d win. Yet due to the sheer infestation my gardens quickly became carpeted in nutgrass as it grew quicker than I could weed. Instead of buckling in defeat though, I’m embracing this as an excellent lesson in the problems encountered in productive gardening, and we shall start again armed with experience and knowledge. Another bonus was that I noticed my battle being lost early and I already had started to hedge my bets and plant back within my orchard area, so I should be able to maintain my vegetable supply. This integrated planting was also inspired by an amazing garden I was fortunate enough to see during my work travels, as it so successfully demonstrated how well productive plantings could be combined throughout display gardens. To be honest, in my mind, I had only the two ends of the productive garden spectrum: conventional segregated plots and permaculture. The choice between these was determined by whether you liked an orderly or a natural garden style. Now, after seeing how productive, healthy and beautiful the integrated garden can be, with a mix of both styles within yet another, my thinking has been changed. So this month, I’m getting stuck into my usual planting of summer vegetables, but in a different format, and I’m looking forward to having a heap of fresh salad vegetables to harvest for all the outdoor barbecues. I hope everyone that dreams of growing their own produce but has struck trouble, like my nutgrass dilemma, has not been defeated. It is at time like this I think of Thomas Edison’s quote, 'I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.' Until next month in ‘Get Up and Grow’. Vegetable

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Sometimes I wonder what God would say to all the bad press He is getting lately? For example people who claim to love and serve God are continually in the papers- for all the wrong reasons. God seems harsh and unloving; He is against personal freedom and seems to be down on fun, enjoyment, even personal happiness. More than that, surely belief in God is so irrelevant after all hasn’t science disproven God? I am not a prophet – actually I work for a nonprofit organisation, but here is what I think God would say. I think God would say firstly I am here, regardless of whether you think I am around. How do we know God is here? The Bible says that God turned up on our doorstep in the person of Jesus, showing us he is real and interested in us. The second thing God would say is that it’s not over yet. God says that one day He will do something about all the religious hypocrites and bad and evil that is in the world. People’s actions have not gone unnoticed and God will

ultimately not let that go- but for now we have to be patient. Thirdly, God says that He knows what’s best for us. As our maker God knows how to get the best out of the machinery He has made. We may not think so - and so we do what we want, but God says trust me, I know who to get the best out of life. As a matter of fact Jesus says I have come to give you life in all its fullness, and a life that satisfies our deepest longings. If we leave God out of the picture, then what we have left is still pain, sickness, sorrow and sadness - we still have religious nut jobs blowing people up and stealing - people still get sick and die from diseases, people are still unhappy and unfulfilled. God says I am here and one day I will fix all this, you just have to trust me.

Sport Duncan Armstrong inspires students to go for gold Winner of three Olympic gold medals, a silver medal, an Order of Australia, world record holder and Young Australian of the Year (1988), Duncan Armstrong had a lot of wisdom to pass onto Glasshouse Christian College students at their Sports Awards Night. Growing up in hot Rockhampton fostered Mr Armstrong’s love of swimming from an early age but it was a school guest speaker that ignited his passion to dream big and ‘go for gold’. The Armstrong family moved to Brisbane so Duncan would have access to the training and facilities he needed to follow his dream. “Never underestimate the commitment of your family supporting your goals,” Mr Armstrong said. “They are your taxi service and your cheer squad. You will be emptying their petrol tank and then emptying their pantry when you get home again,” he added.

Duncan Armstrong with his doppelganger GCC teacher Russell Modlin Mr Armstrong gave an animated and selfdepreciating account of his first gold medal win. “We were all standing at the edge of the pool with the whole world looking on. I was concentrating on my breathing but was really wound up with adrenalin so when they introduced the swimmers and came to my name I whooped and pushed my hand in the air to show I was number one,” he said with embarrassment. “Even Laurie Lawrence who was psyching me up was shocked. ‘You better win it now,’ he shouted! Luckily, I did.” An unexpected addition to the night’s program was seeing just how good a doppelganger GCC’s

Cassidy Ferris and Daemon Cruise proudly hold their trophy as the Primary Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year

Andrea Little and Damian Tomokino were announced the Secondary Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Russell Modlin is for Duncan Armstrong. Mr Modlin said complete strangers wouldn’t believe that he wasn’t Mr Armstrong and he would have to point to his name badge to prove the point. Approximately 300 people attended the GCC Sports Awards Night and parents almost burst with pride when they saw their son or daughter awarded a highly prized trophy or medal. The most coveted award of the night is the Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year. This year the Primary Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year were Daemon Cruise and Cassidy Ferris and the Secondary Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year were Damian Tomokino and Andrea Little respectively.

How many pussy cats? Teacher: "If I gave you two cats and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Seven." Teacher: "No, listen carefully... If I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Seven." Teacher: "Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples, and another two apples and another two, how many would you have?"

Johnny: "Six." Teacher: "Good. Now if I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?" Johnny: "Seven!" Teacher: "Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!" Johnny: "Because I've already got a freaking cat!" Submitted by Sarah, Glass House Mountains

PISCES February 20 – March 20 There are sweet touches to you this week, as under the full Moon in Gemini, bonds of affection everywhere make you realise how lucky you are to have these connections. Friends are there to encourage and support you. Your love given is returned double-fold. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The full Moon delivers a very interesting potential that could spell greater earnings. You may find that the key is to build on small opportunities. Find a healthy, skilful way to work out your current driving, physical energy. Consider putting in some elbow grease. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This full Moon right on your sign makes you emotionally reactive about whose needs are being met. You should be able to roll the dice and pull a rabbit out of a hat this week, so ride with your instincts! The weekend sees a sensitive Cancer Moon with family. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 You may not be at your most persuasive today and in fact may end up giving everybody the wrong impression. Actually you are in the mood to have your own way this weekend but in your path seems to be numerous vexations. Let instincts guide you.

CANCER June 22 – July 22 A friend may turn out to be warm and caring enough for you to turn to that person for advice, companionship and perhaps affection. Under the Gemini full Moon, this may find you seeking a quiet private time if recent activities have been too hectic or intense. LEO July 23 – August 22 This week a Gemini full Moon urges you to be strong in your principles but not too dogmatic. You need to find out when to bend and when to flow with your friends either at work or at home. Perhaps it is a good idea to apply the brakes re cash expenditure. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 All you darling Virgos, under this Gemini full Moon, sees you bringing culmination to recent discussions. Plans and good feelings are well and truly on track and perhaps a breakfast connection inspires a grounded practical plan for the future entailing travel. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The full Moon is in an air sign, namely Gemini, and emphasis is on your air sign Libra, in monetary dealings with others. Regarding these companions it’s a perfect time to be intellectually enthusiastic with them, provided idealism is well founded at this time.

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You may have noticed over the recent months that there are some very crazy human beings around the countryside. Under the full Moon in Gemini you may see partners adding more weight into their edgy differences. It drives you to seek security elsewhere. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The full Moon explodes on your work and health areas, accenting any shortcomings and obligations, and ways that you can personally surmount them. Don’t add any fantasies or unwarranted idealism into the mix as it’s a crazy Halloween weekend. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 If you are a parent the full Moon shines a loving fulfillment towards your sign. However, it suggests that you avoid risks around your home, so leave the odd jobs in the care of somebody else. Perhaps a scuffle about who is in charge, but claim your freedom. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The full Moon is in Gemini and that is compatible with your air sign, Aquarius. You achieve the greatest success by getting plans and ideas approved, attending to correspondence and heeding the views of others. Get in touch with business contacts.
